War for Gateway Session Recap #13


Not long after the last hill giant falls, hobgoblin archers appear in the upper level of the dwarven fortress. The hill giants had bashed holes into the outer walls and were reaching inside for food. Most take cover to avoid the arrow fire, but Wyvern Squad acts instead. Saladino rushes forward and uses a hill giant corpse to vault him high enough to grab the opening to the upper level. Others, including a dwarven warrior named Brock follow.

While there is fighting going on overhead, Wimzy rushes forward to destroy the hill giant skeleton trapped under the portcullis. She punches and kicks the undead and slowly damages it. Anik and Kendell go to help Wimzy. Enemies attack from arrow slits in the sides of this long entryway passage. Anik repels his attackers with a Burning Hands spell. Kendell is quick enough to grab a spear thrust towards him and uses it to slam his enemy into the wall. He then uses the spear to stab at those inside.

Overhead, Saladino and Brock take out the hobgoblin archers and are joined by Sir Justin and others. More hobgoblins rush into the room along with a few ogres. The fighting continues unabated.

Daubney leads the way into the archer post on the other side of fortress. There he is joined by Eris, Laurel and Sann. Hobgoblins and ogres are fought here as well.

Down below the skeletal hill giant is finally slain. It is possible to squeeze past the body and crawl under the portcullis to reach the main entrance to this base. Kendell tried to lift the portcullis higher, but it was beyond even his strength. Several of the Goblin Kickers follow Wimzy. The halfling priestess opens the door and hobgoblins rush to attack. The Goblin Kickers defend Wimzy and start to fight their way into the fortress.

Anik joins the side Saladino and Brock are on along with others of Sir Justin's attack force. The goblinoids are being forced back and the fighting spills out into a much larger room. In this area there are stairs going down and the area where the portcullis can be raised and lowered.

The story is the same on the other side as Sorvani, Mara, and Kayla climb up to aid the other members of Wyvern Squad. They too force the enemy out into the larger chamber. A huge group of reinforcements are trapped in a Web courtesy of Eris. Even more reinforcements arrive including a hobgoblin caster. He centers a Fireball on Saladino, wounding him and those around him. Anik takes a lot of damage and moves back for his own protection. Eris and then Kayla send their own Fireballs at the enemy spell caster, but he manages to survive them both. Sorvani adds a Magic Missile and the hobgoblin seems near death.

GM Notes:

And that's where things were left off at in mid-combat. This session had two new players and one new character. Susan played Wimzy and Lemon the new dwarf Brock who was among the army but not mentioned before. He was not a member of the Goblin Kickers.

Here's the map and key for the Dwarven Fortress. The letters are the approximate location of Wyvern Squad members.

Ground Floor:

1 – This was the entrance Wyvern Squad used the first time here when they came in from the caverns.

2 – Large chamber where supplies were being stored. This was set on fire the first time here. This chamber is two stories high.

3 – Long passage way to the outside. Stout double doors are present along with a portcullis.

4 – Hallway with stairs going up.

5-6 – Kitchen/Pantry

7-8 – Blacksmith area/ storage. Sann was found locked in the storage room during the first time here.

9 & 15 – Rooms with arrow slots in them to fire into area #1.

10 – Barracks

11 – Private rooms

12 – Armory

13-14 – Rooms with arrow slots in them to fire into the outside passage. Both areas have stairs going up.

16- Training area. Has stairs going up.

17 – Common area for higher ups.

18-19 – Private quarters

20-21 – Commander's Office and Quarters.

Upper level of the Dwarven Fortress:

1 – Large walkway that surrounds and looks down into area #2 below. Numerous arrow slots to fire on those down there. 2 sets of stairs lead down.

2 – Large open area that holds the controls for the portcullis. Also has stairs going down. Fighting is currently taking place here. The grey area is the Web spell.

3-4 – Archery nests to fire on those outside the fortress. The hill giants made their own entrance that the group used to gain access.
