War for Gateway Session Recap #8

After dealing with the aftermath of the cargo barge, Wyvern Squad moves into the caverns that lead away from the underground lake. Immediately they can go left or right, with footprints going back and forth in both directions. The tunnel to the left looks like something large has been dragged through it, plowing the dirt. A orangish/reddish glow is noted down the right hand passage, suggesting that more magma lies off in that direction.

The group takes the left hand passageway. As they move along it curves to their right. Before too long, the source of the dragging is discovered. An ogre is approaching, dragging a large sled behind it. The sled is empty now, but presumably it is loaded with cargo from the beach and then dragged to its destination. The ogre is quickly dealt with.

A second ogre is discovered when the tunnel straightens out and starts to rise upwards. This second ogre is quickly put down. The passageway evens out and hobgoblins in chain mail are spotted standing guard on either side of a set of large open double doors. The guards are dealt with and the double doors lead into an ancient dwarven base. More hobgoblins are quickly dealt with.

The double doors can be closed and barred from the inside of the base. At this point Malf, Laurel's feline companion starts to get excited. The cat senses a friend is close by. Beyond the door is a short hallway that has arrow slits on the sides of it, but no one seems to be manning them right now. The hallway leads into a larger room where more supplies can be seen. Another hallway on the opposite side of the warehouse leads to the outside. There another caravan is quickly being loaded with food and drink.

More guards are spotted along with their commander. The group moves to attack, but the lead hobgoblin gets a Web spell off first, trapping several in the hallway. He follows this up with a Fireball igniting the web and burning those trapped inside. With the web out of the way, hand to hand combat follows. During the battle, another cargo-dragging ogre comes in, but all the enemies fall in the end.

Rushing towards the exit, Wyvern Squad finds more guards, caravan archers and drivers in the area. As battle erupts, the wagons start to drive off. The drivers of the closest wagon are taken out by Saladino and arrows while the Improved Phantasmal Force of a green dragon terrifies the lead drivers into abandoning their wagon. Enemy forces are quickly whittled down and the wagons forced to stop before their supplies can reach their army.

Saladino uses his flying mount once more and locates several more cargo wagons that had already left the depot. They are taken out in turn.

While that is going on, the rest of the Wyvern Squad searches the dwarven lair. A baker's dozen of Alchemist Fire grenades are located. Following Malf, the group reaches the forge area of the complex and find a weak Sann Silverbeard locked in a storage area. Wimsey heals Sann and he tells his story.

Sann works for the Dwarven Ministry of Histories and is on a quest to discover the civilization that lived in the Frontier Lands before the time of Keln. All evidence of who they were has been, somehow, erased from history. Sann and his companions rode into this region and reached this old dwarven base where they were captured. His companions were since killed by the hobgoblins. Sann declares that this place is called Bollo's Shield. The observation post at the top of this mountain was used to keep an eye on the humans and elves. A second place called Bollo's Spear was a huge dwarven fortress that would be used to attack if it came to that. Some believe that this fortress was where the enemy army came from.

Further searching turns up the hobgoblin commander's spell book. He also had 2 magical rings and a mace. Wimsey can tell that the mace has ties to Azrella as she can sense her goddess' magic in it. The supplies are put to the torch and the group leaves Bollo's Shield with the intent of reaching the Sunken Temple where they will rest for the evening.

During his flight, Saladino noted numerous goblinoids and even hill giants on the road. The siege at Fort Graystone has been broken. Hungry enemies fill the road and many of them are not particular on what they eat. The group moves off the road and moves very carefully towards the Sunken Temple.
