War for Gateway Session Recap #003

April 12th, 569 CR:

Having reached the Eagle's Nest outpost, Wyvern Squad settles in for the night. A guard rotation is set up.

April 13th, 569 CR:

Early the next morning, a bashing sound is heard coming from down the road leading up to the outpost. In the lead is a huge ogre carrying an equally giant club. This ogre is regularly bashing his club against his armored chest. A second ogre folllows the first. This ogre carries a mobile archery platform on his back like it was a pack. Inside this carrier is a pair of hobgoblin archers. More hobgoblins follow on foot.

Wyvern Squad gathers on the roof of the outpost to defend it against the invaders. Daubeny grabs a light crossbow and Kendell a short bow to give them ranged attacks but neither is particularly skilled with these new weapons. Arrows and bolts are fired at the first ogre, doing only minor damage. The first ogre advances up to the heavy metal doors leading into Eagle's Nest. He draws his giant club back and rams into the doors with a terrific clang.

But by doing so, the ogre has put himself in range of regular weapons of the defenders on the roof. Weapon strikes follow and the ogre is near death. Saladino puts him down by leaping from the roof, slicing the ogre with his sword and then leaping at the second ogre. Daubeny follows and between the two warriors and the arrows from Flare, the second ogre falls landing on top of his archer carrier, crushing the hobgoblins in it. The two warriors than advance on the half-dozen or so hobgoblins that followed the ogres.

Back up on the roof, the rest of Wyvern Squad prepares to join their comrades down below, but take the normal route instead of leaping off the roof. As they advance towards the tower door, a female half-orc and several more hobgoblins emerge. The half-orc wounds Wimzy with an Arcane Ray Cantrip. Kendell rushes to defend Wimzy and nearly slices the half-orc in half. The pair then battle the hobgoblins that trailed the half-orc.

While hobgoblins are fought on two different fronts a new enemy comes on the scene. A Priest of Hextor appears riding a flying black stallion. He moves close enough to Flare to hit him with a Divine Strike Cantrip. The spell takes the form of a red arrow that embeds itself into Flare. Eris moves to help out Flare with this new enemy.

Only two hobgoblins remain of the group being attacked by Daubeny and Saladino. One retreats as the fighters rush back to help out against the enemy priest. Saladino pauses long enough to cut the head of the archer platform ogre and then uses the body of a door bashing ogre as a spring to leap up and grab the Eagle's Nest roof. Saladin climbs up and then helps Daubeny make it up as well.

The other hobgoblins are defeated by Kendell and Wimzy. Flare is badly wounded by the Priest of Hextor and Wimzy goes to heal him. Wyvern Squad converges on the enemy priest and have a terrific battle he goes down. No more enemies are present. A quick search locates several magic items on the priest and the half-orc.

GM Notes:

The Priest had magical plate mail armor, longsword, and an obsidian figurine. The half-orc had a magical dagger, ring, and boots in addition to her spell book. The contents of the spell book are listed in the Spell Books thread. The magical quarterstaff and potion from the previous session remain unclaimed.
