The Elder City named Shelvestra had seen better days. It has been built sometime in the very distant past. It is believed that the race that modern scholars call the Elders lived in this place until around 65 million years ago when they all perished in some unknown fashion.
With no Elders left to tend to Shelvestra it fell into ruins. The terrain around it greatly changed over the passage of the eons. What had once been ideal terrain for a city slowly changed into a swamp and Shelvestra sank into its depths, remaining in that state for untold millions of years.
More recently the malignant race known as the HIVE found their way into the ruins some 400 years ago. After a disastrous attempt to cease control of Kingsport, what remained of the HIVE fled for their lives. In the days and weeks that followed they made their way across the wilderness to a place that they had learned about from those they had absorbed. The humans called it the Great Swamp. It sounded like a perfect place for the HIVE to take refuge and regroup. It vaguely sounded like home. In time they would grow strong once more and begin their campaign of conquest anew.
Decades later, what remained of the HIVE came across the what little remained of the Elder City. There was a presence there and the HIVE Queen was drawn to it. It took many years and much digging, but the object of her search was eventually found. It was the remains of something, just what she couldn't be sure what. It looked like it had been dead for a long time, but that was really not the case. Only its broken bones remained, but there was a power in those bones. Without even realizing what she was doing, the HIVE Queen consumed these ancient bones.
The mind of the HIVE Queen suddenly was consumed by knowledge and information that nearly overwhelmed her. Her kind had the ability to take the knowledge and skills of others and make them their own. Those bones was surely the very last of its kind. Its mental essence had somehow survived for untold millennia in a greatly weakened state. That power and knowledge now belonged to the HIVE Queen.
Kylie and Gweyr discuss things magical.
“I am anything but subtle,” Gweyr answers with a laugh. “But to be serious for a moment, I can be studious and do enjoy as you say the academic and research side of magic. The powers that I wield are very dangerous and for the most part I have to restrain myself. But there are those rare times, such as on this mission, where the restrains come off and I can cut loose to my full potential. Those are the times where I can enjoy myself the most.”Kylie wrote:"I had been getting that sense," Kylie says with a chuckle, "though you are rather subtle about it... Personally, I tend to approach magic from a somewhat academic bent; I really enjoy gaining a deeper understanding of how the universe works."
The invading coalition was now spread across the ruins of the Shelvestra. Miles away, the trio of dragons was contending with a quintet of black dragons. The dwarves, being slower, were left about a mile back among some of the very few buildings still left in the ruins. It would provide some measure of protection should one of the black dragons approach. Lord Sharadin and Captain Roma remained with them.
The elves, led by Kylie, Lilia and Gweyr had flown ahead in an attempt locate the weak life signs the couatl Quirin had sensed. Instead they found more surviving buildings surrounded by eggs. One of these eggs hatched to reveal a slug-like creature. This creature was drawn to the central building. There lizard men and frog-like creatures had been collected and were in various stages of being consumed by the HIVE larva.
Sickened by this sight, Lilia casts a Fireball into the midst of the area. Kylie adds a second Fireball and much of the 'feeding area' goes up in flames. Any living thing caught in the fiery magic is slain instantly. Those things on the edge of the explosive magic shriek in pain from the flames before dying. This death shriek fills the immediate area. Most of the feeding area goes up in flames, but a few pockets still do remain where larva and head hunters are waiting to hatch.
The pair of Fireballs are noted by those who followed on the ground. They had caught up to Gweyr and the fire mage told them about the field of eggs and to keep their distance for safety. Right after that the Fireballs go off followed by the dying screams of something.
“Seems like they found something to burn,” Gweyr offers offhandedly. “I can only guess what.”
Another roar is now heard far off in the distance. Valena focuses in on it as she was already keeping watch. The noise came off from where the dragons were fighting. A shadowy form streaks across the underground sky towards the hatchery. Thanks to their keen eyesight, Laucian and Valena are the first to glimpse just what it is. One of the black dragons is heading towards you!
“Remember what Lord Sharadin said,” Andlin calls out as he grasps his sword and shield. “Spread out to limit the effectiveness of its breath weapon. We must keep this foe away from the Queen!”
GM Notes:
Kylie and Lilia could hear the dragon's roar as well.
Now what?
