New Kingdoms #10

Post by GM Fenrir »

The group has enjoyed a nice meal hosted by Knight-Captain Maletar in a semi-private room on the second floor of the Inn of the Smiling Dryad. It wasn’t private enough however, as the loathsome man known as Rollester arrived and ignored all attempts to be removed, instead making himself at home. Further confusion and irritation arises when he apparently seems to be expected to attend this mysterious meeting when the captain and the innkeeper enter. This timely arrival, along with a hasty attempt to defuse the situation by the druidess, Aesa, has spared any blood from being shed, at least for the moment.
"Hopefully to whatever meeting we are waiting for," Aesa replies outloud but to no one in particular. She too, is getting weary of this day with each passing moment.
“Indeed, that is exactly what we are about to do,” Captain Maletar replies even though the statement wasn’t directed at him.
"A meeting with the basilisk is looking better all the time...." Sir Rovach mutters to himself.
"Or the banshee," Erizhi adds, overhearing Rovach's words. She turns to the innkeeper Torvin, but also looks questioningly at Tamberlaine. "It has been a long night and getting longer. This friend of yours," she says with a drip of sarcasm to the words, "is part of this meeting? Can we just get to it then?" she adds impatiently. "I am loathe to be a part of anything that this 'man' might be involved in." Erizhi will refuse to sit, crossing her arms in front of her and striking a rather irritated pose.
The innkeeper looks quite mournful but manages, “I do apologize, but yes all of us here are part of the meeting, and others besides. Please, please my good and noble people, bear with this day a little longer still and things will be revealed to you. I am sorry that it has taken this long but preparations had to be made.”

“Those are ready now though,” he adds, motioning that everyone should follow him, “so let us proceed.”

The innkeeper grabs Rollester who starts to protest, but is interrupted with, “I think they’ve had enough of you for one night. We’re all weary, let’s just go.” Any further antagonizing is forgotten as the two of them leave the room and descent the stairs to the first floor.

Captain Maletar motions that everyone should follow and Dareos looks to Erizhi to make sure she is coming since he seems to have picked up on her defiance. The captain will not leave until everyone else has, and the look from the Makkee farm has returned to his face indicating he is quite short on patience once more.

The first floor of the inn has quieted down tremendously, making everyone wonder just how late it is truly getting. The few patrons left are deep in their cups and look like they will be requiring help to wherever they will be sleeping. Even the minstrels from earlier have departed and only a few serving staff remain, cleaning up for what will probably be quite the day tomorrow.

The innkeeper leads everyone out into the central open-aired courtyard where many of the rooms look out into. The area has lush grass and several large trees that dwarf the three-story inn. The starry sky is quite beautiful and the light breeze is refreshing but not too cool. While this is a huge improvement in setting, one can only wonder if everyone is supposed to take this meeting on the grass.

The innkeeper reaches almost the middle of the courtyard and turns to address the group, “I apologize for this, it will all be over very shortly.” He then gives a nod to Rollester.

The man smiles and says, “This will only hurt for a moment.”

The entire group is plunged into darkness, but before anyone can truly react, they hear the innkeeper let out an exasperated sigh and say, “No it wont, why do you do that?”

Rollester’s voice cuts through the darkness in reply, “As a powerful mage, I have a flair for the dramatic.”

“For the ridiculous you mean,” the innkeeper retorts.

“Hurry it up!” Captain Maletar’s voice nearly booms from behind everyone.

“It’s done, come on,” the innkeeper says. “Step carefully now.”

Not knowing quite what to expect, everyone takes tentative steps forward. Those towards the front step out of the darkness as if merely opening your eyes to a new day. As the rest follow and emerge, everyone looks around and they are in the courtyard still. Nothing has changed, or has it? It’s the courtyard, but the edges of it are instead more grass and large trees. The trees themselves are much more majestic, and the grass more vibrant. Even the stars in the sky above seem brighter. The inn doesn’t seem exist anymore and at the far edges of everyone’s night vision the landscape blurs a bit. Those who have any sort of magical knowledge or exposure can feel a different sensation now, but can’t put their finger on it. Those who are mages can sense a powerful magic at work so beautiful it threatens to break your heart just by being within it.

Almost lost in all of this is a large area where the innkeeper had originally seemed to be heading before this drastic change. Where it was just a clearing within the inn’s courtyard, it is now home to a massive, intricately carved wooden table with twenty high-backed chairs. The craftsmanship is apparent even from this distance. Several tall posts that are lit like torches frame the area. There are also a few small side tables and benches back from this main seating arrangement. Best guess is an additional two dozen could sit along the benches given their size.

There are a number of additional people present, some sitting on the benches and three sitting at the main table. The ones along the benches, which counting them puts the number at four, seem to be just outside the torchlight and their features remain hidden. The other three are quite striking anyway and command your attention.

The three are seated together, the one on the right as you look at them is a male. Clearly he is elven, the long pointed ears and angular features give that away immediately. His long blonde hair flows down his back, held off his face by a silver circlet and his piercing blue eyes look at each one of the group in turn, seemingly looking for something. His long fingers are unadorned and steepled on the table in front of him. He wears robes of the richest azure and a blue crescent moon upon a delicate-looking silver chain hangs around his neck.

The person to the left appears to be human and is definitely female. Her face betrays that she is older than she might otherwise be judged to be. She wears a suit of scale armor that looks custom crafted to fit her which is of a rich green in color. The scales are larger than one typically sees such armor made from. She wears no helm, so her short-cut platinum blonde hair sits wildly upon her head, with long braids falling to her bosom, one on each side of her face in front of her ears. A short hooded cape, also a rich, but darker, green rests on her shoulders, the hood pulled back to let nothing obstruct her eyes the color of sapphires from scrutinizing each person. Several small gold hoops adorn her ears. Her armored gloves rest on the table and a large sheathed sword leans against it as well. An unstrung composite bow also leans on the table nearby. At her feet a big black bear stirs and looks at the group lazily before letting out a massive yawn that shows off all of his wicked teeth within that powerful jaw.

Lastly, the person in the middle is almost impossible to look at for as beautiful as she is. She appears much shorter than the female seated to her right but her features appear elven. Her golden-brown hair is only slightly longer than the other woman’s but is just as unruly and playful. Her eyes are a deep, rich brown and are much more friendly than the other two. She wears a custom-cut top with a high collar that stops at her mid-drift and shows off much of her tanned skin, held together across her chest by buckles and has long, billowy sleeves that almost reach her elbows. Underneath the sleeves is another set of tight sleeves that end at the wrist and are studded with pearls. From what can be seen, it looks as though her legs are adorned in wide-fitting pantaloons held up by an ornate broad belt in a shape of a V that hugs her hips. A billowing cape completes the ensemble and all of the clothing is richly embroidered and in the kingdom colors of light and darker blues. A staff rests at her side that is very ornate and topped with an elaborate metal cap that ends in a point much like a spear would. Within the center of this cap before it begins to narrow to its long point is embedded a large shard of crystal that glows with a pale light.

“Please, please, come forward,” the innkeeper beckons. “We are quite safe here from most everything. Please feel free to sit wherever. Let me make some introductions,” he hastily adds.

“The elf to our right is Maldos Goldenmane, high priest of Corellon Larethian, spiritual advisor and diplomat to the Kingdom of Maletar,” the innkeeper explains. Maldos nods his head slightly to the group following the introduction.

“The woman to the far left is Thyra, Ranger-General of Maletar,” Torvin continues. She doesn’t offer any indication of giving pleasantries and instead continues to examine each person. The bear at her feet lets out a low growl and the innkeeper adds, “Oh, and that’s Fury! My apologies.” The bear seems to understand and accept, putting its head back upon its paws.

“Before us sits Queen Aerowyn Maletar, Magocrat of the Kingdom of Maletar,” the innkeeper says indicating the woman in the middle, who he then bows deeply before.

With the introduction, she stands and smiles, opening her arms to indicate that seats should be taken if no one has moved to them yet. “Welcome all, thank you for your patience. I have been most eager to meet you,” she says in a voice both soft and yet full of power. It carries without her needing to expend an effort to do so. It is quite near enchanting.

Dareos had also bowed low, where Captain Maletar merely nodded his head in greeting to the queen. Rollester even bowed as much as his girth would allow for before he took a seat close to the trio. The captain sits next to Thyra while Dareos sits closer towards the group. The innkeeper sits next to Rollester, but only after he delivers goblets of the finest silver inlaid with small garnets and offers two pitchers, one of water somehow quite chilled while the other is a light elven wine of the palest golden color.

“Before I begin, I wish to introduce our other esteemed guests this night,” Queen Aerowyn says. She turns to the four seated behind all of them along the benches and motions them to approach. “First from our neighboring kingdom of Daeyshir, I introduce Lord Mythnar and Lady Myrenia Morthauris. Hailing from the distant Greyson Isles, I also want to introduce Sir Redjak Fallowen and Lady Zarya Greyson.”

GM Notes: Welcome to the new players! Their descriptions will be posted along with the rest of the characters’ shortly if they aren’t already. They can also be posted here should the players wish to.

The Queen will give pause awaiting for the group to make any introductions they wish to. While this is going on, regardless of if anyone partakes in drink or not, they will begin to feel quite refreshed. While the ambiance is quite relaxing and invigorating in its own way, this is seemingly something more. However, even the mages aren’t quite sure what is at work here, but the fatigue of the day seems to be dissipating.

“You already know my half-brother Tamberlain, Knight-Captain of the Maletar Royal Guard,” Queen Aerowyn will continue after a bit. “Rollester is the Guildmaster of the Mage Guild in the city of Taeltell and one of my chief advisors. You also know Torvin, innkeeper of this fine establishment and chief Spymaster of the realm.”

Letting all of that sink in for a moment, Thyra actually speaks up, her voice much more common and rougher around the edges than the Queen’s, “I don’t see why we need any of them. We should be handling all of this internally.”

“It’s precisely that we can’t do just that as to why we are here now,” Queen Aerowyn replies. If she is at all irritated by the disruption, it doesn’t reflect in her voice or demeanor. Instead she gently lays her hand over Thyra’s arm. “So we need to seek alternatives and I believe we have that among these heroes, lords and ladies.”

Turning back to her guests, the Queen continues, “What I wish to discuss here is quite delicate, but wholly important. I do not expect anyone to change allegiances to kingdoms they already have sworn themselves to,” she begins to look at each individual directly at this point, “but I can offer lands, titles,” her eyes fall to Erizhi for the next word, “favors, gold, treasures, whatever your desires should you wish to help.”

Both Thyra and Captain Maletar look quite displeased, Rollester looks disinterested, while Torvin is quite opposite with a more hopeful look upon his face. Maldos looks intrigued as to what the group’s response will be and Dareos is just listening to all of it with great interest.

Queen Maletar sits down and says, “Please feel free to talk amongst yourselves for as long as you wish. I will answer any questions you may have and will reveal what I propose once I am satisfied you believe my intentions are genuine.”

GM Notes: Whew! I apologize for running with this post but it was extremely important all of this was delivered at once. Please feel free to add character interactions at any point of this lengthy post and I will address each in kind. There is no doubt a lot to discuss and think over here, so again please role play to your hearts’ content.

Sir Rovach
The innkeeper looks quite mournful but manages, “I do apologize, but yes all of us here are part of the meeting, and others besides. Please, please my good and noble people, bear with this day a little longer still and things will be revealed to you. I am sorry that it has taken this long but preparations had to be made.”
“Those are ready now though,” he adds, motioning that everyone should follow him, “so let us proceed.”
"It is I who must apologize, Master Innkeeper, for my impatence." replies Sir Rovach. "You have been an excellent host and I thank you." Looking around at the others to see if they are ready, he adds "Yes, let us proceed, shall we?" Sir Rovach will slide his sword scabbard over his back and carry his helmet in his left arm as he follows the Innkeeper to wherever they are headed.
The innkeeper grabs Rollester who starts to protest, but is interrupted with, “I think they’ve had enough of you for one night. We’re all weary, let’s just go.” Any further antagonizing is forgotten as the two of them leave the room and descent the stairs to the first floor.
As Torvin grabs Rollester and drags him off, Sir Rovach no longer considers drawing his sword on the disgusting, little man. It would be rude of him to continue hostilities in Torvin's establishment now that he has removed Rollester. But Sir Rovach will continue to keep an eye on Rollester from now on, remembering they have a challenge to each other they might continue one day.
The innkeeper reaches almost the middle of the courtyard and turns to address the group, “I apologize for this, it will all be over very shortly.” He then gives a nod to Rollester.
The man smiles and says, “This will only hurt for a moment.”
Looking at Rollester, Sir Rovach responds "I can take it if you can."
There are a number of additional people present, some sitting on the benches and three sitting at the main table....

"Your Grace, " Sir Rovach says with a bow, "I am honored to meet you."
What is with the connection with bears in this country? wonders Sir Rovach. Maybe Lady Aesa can answer it for him at a later time. For now, he will bow to the Ranger and say "My Lady, I am now honored a second time tonight to meet your presence as well as his Grace."
“Before us sits Queen Aerowyn Maletar, Magocrat of the Kingdom of Maletar,” the innkeeper says indicating the woman in the middle, who he then bows deeply before.
"Your Majesty, " Sir Rovach says with an even deeper bow then the other two, "words of honor cannot express the feelings in my heart, to meet you and look upon your beauty, which shines brighter than the sun and moon and all the stars in the sky."
“Before I begin, I wish to introduce our other esteemed guests this night,” Queen Aerowyn says. She turns to the four seated behind all of them along the benches and motions them to approach. “First from our neighboring kingdom of Daeyshir, I introduce Lord Mythnar and Lady Myrenia Morthauris....
"My Lord and Lady," Sir Rovach will nod his head to them respectfully, "greetings and well met." He quickly looks them over, descreetly so not to be rude, to see what they look like.
...Hailing from the distant Greyson Isles, I also want to introduce Sir Redjak Fallowen and Lady Zarya Greyson.”

He will nod his head respectfully to Lady Greyson first. "My Lady, I extend my greetings to you too and well met."

Looking over at the one called Sir Redjak, he will bow his head and say "Welcome, Sir Redjak. It is my honor to met you as well," Looking him over, once again, trying not to be rude, he will then ask "I wonder from your title Sir, and please forgive me if I am too forward or am not familar with your people, but are you a Knight from your land?"
Sir Rovach will then partake of some cool water. As he holds his goblet, he will close his eyes and lower his head briefly, saying a silent prayer to Anu. My Lord, please give me the sight to look into their hearts. (ooc: detect evil) He will then open his eyes when ready and pass his gaze over Lord Mythnar, Lady Myrenia Morthauris, Sir Redjak and Lady Zarya.
Sir Rovach will bow his head to both the Captain and good Torvin. Torvin is Chief Spymaster? Somehow, that doesn't surprise Sir Rovach. With a personality and demeanor such as his, he must be very successful in his role for the Kingdom.

However, to Rollester he will just give a curt nod. Just enough to fullfill the requirements of courtesy and honor. And no more.

"Definately much more pleasent than the Basilisk's lair..." mutters Sir Rovach to himself. As the others make their introductions, he will try if able to make his way over to Sir Redjak, curious about his title. Also trying to remember if he knows anything at all from his basic studies in Religion and Local History about the Greyson Isles.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

The innkeeper looks quite mournful but manages, “I do apologize, but yes all of us here are part of the meeting, and others besides. Please, please my good and noble people, bear with this day a little longer still and things will be revealed to you. I am sorry that it has taken this long but preparations had to be made.”

“Those are ready now though,” he adds, motioning that everyone should follow him, “so let us proceed.”

If not for the presence of Torvin, Erizhi might just excuse herself and retire to her room. Tamberlaine is borish and far too self-occupied to be interesting. Rollerster, well, the less thought of him the better. At least Torvin seems to have him under control. That man truly tries her patience.

But now they are on the move again. Erizhi had struck an obviously irritated pose, her arms folded tightly across her mid-section. Her teeth were clenched in a tight lock to keep her from saying anything that she might regret. As the rest of the assemblage heads out, Dareos lingers a bit. With a disgruntled sigh, she will follow along, the usuall chimes accompanying her footsteps.

Seeing everything winding down reminds her of just how late it is and Erizhi is feeling not only fatigued but at her patience's near end. The combination of the lush cool grass under her bare feet and the light breeze help to wake her a little. "I really hope this is worth the effort," Erizhi will mutter to herself.

Torvin looks to Rollester and Erizhi expects some sort of teleportation, but instead everything goes black around them. There is some bickering, but Erizhi ignores it waiting for the blackness to subside until Tamberlaine's voice cuts through, business-like as always. Torvin indicates they are to walk forward, presumably out of the darkness. Erizhi instinctively puts her hands up in front of her and takes a few tentative steps forward. There is a sense of something ahead, almost intangible. Erizhi felt similar feelings within the Main Temple of Ishatar. Very powerful magicks. Several more careful steps and she exits out of the darkness and back into the courtyard, but one that had changed. A pocket dimension, Erizhi wonders? A portal to another plane? Or simply another place? Questions that remained to be answered. There was something unusual here.

And there were others as well. Torvin introduces them to a lord and lady, as well as the Queen of Maletar herself. Apparently, Queen Aerowyn has some elvish ancestry. There were stories that hinted at this, but apparently the racial dislike for the elves by her people tended to leave this detail out. It also explains the closeness and connection between the elves and Maletar. As the Queen is introduced, Erizhi will curtsey formally and she is aware she is not well dressed for such an occassion, then remembers that the rest are even less so.

Erizhi will sit as near to the Queen as she can without being next to or directly across from Tamberlaine or Rollester. She will choose to drink only the water, although maybe it is the excitement of the situation, but she is beginning to feel more awake and almost refreshed. Four other guests are introduced, two from the elven lands and two from the Greystone Isles. Interesting, she wonders if there is more than meets the eye to the southerners. Erizhi will try to hold back her grimace when Rollester is announced as a 'chief advisor'. That explains his self-importance, but not the Queen's judgement. And Torvin is a Spymaster. An interesting cover that he has then. Eri will smile wryly at the man.

Erizhi will turn to the guests and when there is a moment, will introduce herself. "Thank you, Your Majesty, I am Erizhetiana of the House Iltani of Lotan, a priestess of Ishtar and an unofficial emmissary of my House and my Temple." She will look directly towards the Queen as she says this last bit, while the former was directed more to everyone assembled.

It is not long before Queen Aerowyn begins to explain the reason why they are there. Several of the others disagree with her intentions and the presence of Erizhi's group. Not untypical, she thinks.

"Favors?" Erizhi thinks to herself. "What could the Queen know about her already?" The priestess will catch her surprise and nod in response to the directed statement, without yet saying a word. Erizhi lets all this sink in for a moment. It all sounds quite good and are all things that she could benefit from to exact her own revenge. At the same time, Erizhi is quite wary. "A very generous offer you make, Your Majesty. I am certain that you have intrigued some part within each one of us with your generosity." Erizhi sees Rovach going about his introductions to the four guests. Once everyone has completed their introductions, she will continue. "It is difficult to know how to answer without knowing just what it is that you wish us to accomplish. Certainly for such a range of dear rewards, the task or tasks are not to be taken lightly. Forgive my bluntness, Majesty, but just what is it that you require of us?"

Aesa:
Sir Rovach eases up a little bit, listening to Lady Aesa's words. Closing his eyes briefly, a small sigh escapes his lips. He then opens his eyes again, a little less tension in his body. In a milder voice, he says to her "You are right, my Lady. I had intended to just ignore this man." He then shakes his head, "But he has no sense of decency or courtesy. After his insult to you and the other Ladies, what would I be if I just remained quiet and did nothing?" Lady Aesa's words definately makes sense to him, giving him pause to his actions. Yet if this Rollester wishes to challenge him, he will not back down and must answer him.
“I am in your debt for your honor and defense of mine,” Aesa replies, “but the pleasure from running this man through would be just a fleeting moment and hardly worth what comes after.”

So Rollester is involved in all this, Aesa thinks upon seeing the captain‘s reaction, or more appropriately the lack of one. She nearly shudders, but it makes perfect sense to her, else why would he be here at all. The only thing unclear is in what capacity.

The innkeeper seems to know how to deal with Rollester and so she will join in with the group as they head downstairs. She stifles a yawn as they walk outside and the night air feels good upon her skin. They have to wait again and then Rollester does something to steal their sight! No, it’s not gone, Aesa tries to calm herself, hearing the banter around her. He did something, a spell or a device of some kind?

Everyone is able to walk out of whatever that darkness was. They emerge back in the courtyard as if they had never left it. Aesa is about to ask why all the games are being played at their expense when she realizes they aren’t exactly where they were before. She can’t put her finger on it but it is different. Maybe what this would all look like without the inn and the village? she ponders.

The innkeeper makes some introductions and Aesa realizes they are in the presence of the Queen of Maletar! There are also several prominent others here as well as other guests. If it were not for the captain retaining his armor and sword she would feel out of place, but it seems as though the ranger Thyra is armed heavily too. She also takes note of Thyra’s companion, a good-sized black bear named Fury.

There are several high elves here, both persons of importance as well as guests like her. Aesa will do her best to be courteous to them as she is towards the others.

She will introduce herself to the others, “I am Aesa, Druidess of the Golden Bear, from the northern forests of Rhidhelmark. It is an honor to meet all of you this night.”

When an opportunity arises, Aesa will walk over unafraid to the bear and crouch down with enough distance so it can sense and size her up. She will greet Fury and give her name. Even though she can not shape change any more today, she knows the golden bear isn’t far beneath her skin and has no doubt Fury will be able to detect it.

Aesa will then find a seat and sample some of the elven wine. As she listens to the Queen begin to reveal her reasons for everyone being present, she begins to feel much more awake and alert. She looks around but of course sees nothing to give her a hint of the reason. Maybe an effect from this place, she wonders.
Queen Maletar sits down and says, “Please feel free to talk amongst yourselves for as long as you wish. I will answer any questions you may have and will reveal what I propose once I am satisfied you believe my intentions are genuine.”
Aesa thinks this over. The queen has yet to reveal exactly what she wants from everyone, but has revealed enticing rewards. Some of them mean nothing to her, but a couple of the things mentioned would help her own kingdom. Having been shown the desserts, I am concerned about what the main course will have to be, she thinks.

Aesa ponders bringing up Rollester and his blatant lack of manners, especially as a high ranking member of this council. The queen did say anything could be asked, but what would Aesa gain by doing so? Rollester’s ire for certain, but maybe little else. She might even be removed from whatever offer is coming, and she is far too curious to threaten that, so for now she will merely sit on the question and let it go unasked.
That which must be done will be done.

Sir Rovach -
Sir Rovach will then partake of some cool water. As he holds his goblet, he will close his eyes and lower his head briefly, saying a silent prayer to Anu. My Lord, please give me the sight to look into their hearts.(ooc: detect evil) He will then open his eyes when ready and pass his gaze over Lord Mythnar, Lady Myrenia Morthauris, Sir Redjak and Lady Zarya.
Sir Rovach doesn’t detect any evil in these four, nor does he detect any evil in the other three rulers and ambassadors that the paladin has just met either. In fact, he doesn’t detect any evil whatsoever!

GM Notes: Typically there will be hints or possibilities of evil, residue, or lingering intentions gone unfulfilled. These don’t show up as a person being evil per se, but they flitter about in the detection range, little inconsequential ‘blips’ as it were that a paladin largely ignores. However, there is none of that present at all, almost as if evil can not exist or survive here.
GM Notes: From what you know, the Greyson Isles largely adopted following the religion of the rest of the Akorian Empire once they joined. There is little else on it however and so it would be believed that they follow those same gods still. As far as history, it was told that the Greyson Isles were now largely unpopulated and newly called the Ghost Isles. Everything from plagues, undead to even sahuagin invasions were mentioned as being responsible. Clearly there isn’t a lot of truth in the tales however.

Erizhi -

(from previous post)
"Perhaps they are looking in the wrong place," she offers. "I know of several instances in ancient stories where certain parts were changed through inaccuracies or were simply allegorical. But if the land is still haunted by her then the story is slightly off anyway. Perhaps someone should speak to this banshee and learn for themselves?"
Vaelos looks at Erizhi for a moment, his face largely unreadable, “Just because a few Wood Elves say it’s haunted hardly makes it so. As far as asking a banshee anything, you are most welcome to try.”
At the same time, Erizhi is quite wary. "A very generous offer you make, Your Majesty. I am certain that you have intrigued some part within each one of us with your generosity."
“That is my hope, of course,” the queen replies with a smile.
Erizhi sees Rovach going about his introductions to the four guests.
“No, that which I ask is definitely not to be taken lightly,” Queen Maletar confirms. “Surely though, there must be some questions before I get to the meat of it, if not from yourself then another perhaps? I just want to ensure all here truly believe my intentions towards this matter.” The queen seems willing to wait a bit longer before pressing on.

Aesa -
There are several high elves here, both persons of importance as well as guests like her. Aesa will do her best to be courteous to them as she is towards the others.
Maldos Goldenmane seems to pick up on Aesa’s attempts at courtesy towards him and the other high elven guests. To his part he doesn’t respond openly, but rather studies Aesa a bit as if he might be able to glean the reason for her discomfort or dislike by doing so.
Fury clearly isn’t expecting any visitors directly, so he looks up at the druid and blinks sleepily a few times. When she speaks to him, in a series of low growls and huffing noises, the bear is truly astonished and comes wide awake. Aesa now knows it is in fact a male bear and he takes the greeting very warmly. While a full conversation is almost impossible, the pleasantries come across well enough for both bear and druid.

This whole display gets a raised eyebrow from Thyra towards Aesa. Her attitude towards the druid seems to change drastically, and the ranger’s stoic face softens a bit. Should Aesa look towards Thyra, she will receive a deep head nod from the ranger and a slight smile on her lips.

Redjak will remain close to Lady Zarya even though he has been assured that the place they now find themselves in is quite safe. While they had met the queen before these others had arrived, he still pays attention to every detail. He learns the names and duties of a few more of the queen’s entourage in doing just that.

One of the newest arrivals addresses him directly after the introductions.

“Indeed I am, good Sir,” Redjak replies. He is dressed in bronze plate mail although he is not currently wearing his helm. It can be seen beneath the bench he was seated upon moments before. “I am a son of the Baron of Fallowen and we have pledged our allegiance to the King of the Greyson Isles.”

Redjak will then ask, “May I have the honor of knowing your name?”

After the light conversation, the Queen of Maletar begins to talk once more, including everyone in what she says next.

Redjak will lean in and whisper to Lady Zarya after the Queen‘s eyes pass over them, “This might be just the sort of thing we need, my Lady, to help us further. What do you think about the offer she is making?”
For our family, our people, our kingdom, we will prevail!

Sir Rovach

(From previous post)
“I am in your debt for your honor and defense of mine,” Aesa replies, “but the pleasure from running this man through would be just a fleeting moment and hardly worth what comes after.”
"You are too kind to me, my Lady, and I thank you for your kind words." Sir Rovach replies back to Lady Aesa. "In this matter I will follow your wisdom." He then gives her a slight grin, his ire definately greatly diminished. "That is, of course, he wishes to continue the matter further. Then I would pursue that fleeting moment with the utmost urgency."
********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
Approaching closer to the four individuals that were seated on the bench, Sir Rovach gives them a low bow and replies "I am Sir Rovach Kadeen, Paladin of Anu from the nation of Immater. And I am truely honored to meet such travelers as yourself."

Sir Rovach is alittle stunned to hear Sir Redjak tell where he is from. He tries not to show the surprise on his face, burying his emotions deep within him but realizing that he was initially unsuccessful in doing such. "Did you say the Greyson Isles, Sir Redjak? The stories I have heard call them the 'Ghost Isles' now and mentions few, if any, people living there." He shakes his head and smiles "I am glad to discover the tales I heard are wrong and that such good people come from there."

Queen Maletar sits down and says, “Please feel free to talk amongst yourselves for as long as you wish. I will answer any questions you may have and will reveal what I propose once I am satisfied you believe my intentions are genuine.”
Now why did her eyes focus on Lady Erizhetiana when she mentioned favors? he wonders to himself. "Myself and my companions have been in the dark this whole time as to why we are here." Sir Rovach states to Sir Redjak. "Perhaps now we will have an answer to that riddle."

Addressing the Queen, Sir Rovach replies to her. "Your Majesty, the offer you present to us is most generous. But of equal importance is the matter you wish to discuss. I mean no offense; indeed, I truely do not believe there is any subterfuge in your words. But all rewards are worthless if the cause is not just & for the good of all. I pray, your Majesty, will you not share what you wish of us and how we may help?"

Kaelyn

Kaelyn can’t help but smirk as preistess and paladin compare this meeting to encountering these foes.

Are they friends he can’t help but wonder. Acquentences at the very least he surmises upon seeing Rollster escorted from the room. As the Knight Captain asks them to follow, Kaelyn sheathes his dagger with a metallic hiss, and follows the others into the corridor.

All of a sudden everything goes dark, and before he can pull a blade from its scabbard, torvin’s voice can be heard. “Watch your coin purses.” He says in warning as a smirk crosses his features.
Within a blink of an eye, the darkness disappears and they are within some from of courtyard. Tentatively Kaelyn looks about his surroundings wondering how they got here.Of course there is magic involved of course but how? He asks himself.
A feeling deep inside him ignites as he realizes just what is going on. This was a spell of a very powerful nature. One that few have seen, silently he takes it all in. “You are indeed a powerful mage, Rollster. I have never seen anything of the like. It is awe inspiring!” he says as a smile of elation crosses his bearded face.
Where there was just a courtyard lays a glade where several individuals are seated. They all look formidable and for a few moments his heart races as he sees the bear, then the beauty of the woman before him.

There are a number of additional people present, some sitting on the benches and three sitting at the main table....

Nodding in return, “Your grace.” Following the Sir Rovach’s lead.
Then another is introduced.
Placing his right arm across his sheath sword, Kaelyn can’t help but feel that this elf analyzing him. Her gaze is steady and un relenting. “Well met, General.” He says with a slight nod of his head. He surely is a very large bear and probably well named.

“Before us sits Queen Aerowyn Maletar, Magocrat of the Kingdom of Maletar,” the innkeeper says indicating the woman in the middle, who he then bows deeply before
His eyes drift over to that of the queen and can’t help but notice how beautiful she is and forgets his manors for a moments then quickly recovers as he drops to one knee and lowers his head. “Your majesty, It is an honor and privelage.”
“Before I begin, I wish to introduce our other esteemed guests this night,” Queen Aerowyn says. She turns to the four seated behind all of them along the benches and motions them to approach. “First from our neighboring kingdom of Daeyshir, I introduce Lord Mythnar and Lady Myrenia Morthauris...
...Hailing from the distant Greyson Isles, I also want to introduce Sir Redjak Fallowen and Lady Zarya Greyson.”
“Hail and well met.” He says evenly, “ I am Kaelyn, son of Damar, of the city of Maletar.”
That explains much, a mage of some power would have to be employed to pull off such a feat as this. But Torvin a spymaster? Perhaps he could teach me his trade? He asks himself.

This is an enticing offer one that he probably would not pass, yet better to hear the proposal before rushing headlong in. After all let the fodder go first..
“. From what I have overheard, our realm is in danger and I wish to see it through it, Your majesty. But before I put my hand in with your plans, I would like to know just what you are asking of us. ”
When the time permits he will approach Rollster, “I apologize for earlier, I thought you were nothing more then a womanizing drunk and acted in haste when you looked upon my componions so. I hope that you can forgive my rashness. You are the guild master of the mages guild then? Would it be possible to join your guild?”
Also when the time persents itself, he will approach Torvin, “One would never take you as a spymaster, You practice your trade well. I was wondering if you have ever thought of teaching your skills to others and if so how you would go about it?” he asks curiously to the innkeeper.

Approaching closer to the four individuals that were seated on the bench, Sir Rovach gives them a low bow and replies "I am Sir Rovach Kadeen, Paladin of Anu from the nation of Immater. And I am truely honored to meet such travelers as yourself."

“A paladin,” Sir Redjak parrots. “Truly an honor. I have only known a few such individuals and they were all quite exemplary people. I might have pursued such an endeavor myself if circumstances had allowed.”

“No the Greyson Isles are thriving, although much is not like it was sadly,” Redjak responds, not giving any hint as to whether he noticed the surprise upon the paladin‘s visage or not. “They could indeed one day truly be worthy of the sobriquet Ghost Isles if things get much worse. My own barony has been hit hardest thus far,” he will admit.

"Myself and my companions have been in the dark this whole time as to why we are here." Sir Rovach states to Sir Redjak. "Perhaps now we will have an answer to that riddle."

“We have actually just recently arrived,” Sir Redjak says, including Zarya with a motion of his hand. “The trip across the Shimmering Sea was thankfully mild. I know as little as you do at this stage, Sir Rovach, for we are merely answering an offer proposed to be mutually beneficial. I too, am eager to hear the full details of all of this.”
For our family, our people, our kingdom, we will prevail!

A feeling deep inside him ignites as he realizes just what is going on. It is awe inspiring!” he says as a smile of elation crosses his bearded face.
Rollister looks perplexed for a moment and then merely smiles and offers a nod of acknowledgement to Kaelyn. However, the innkeeper calls the man’s farce.

“Don’t let him fool you,” the innkeeper explains. “While he did provide the magical darkness I needed to get you all safely here, that’s where his demands ended.”

Rollester turns a sour look to the man, “Must you spoil all of my fun?”

“If I can..” the innkeeper trails off with a sigh.
“Hail and well met.” He says evenly, “ I am Kaelyn, son of Damar, of the city of Maletar.”
GM Notes: Kaelyn actually means the city of Koric as Maletar is, of course, the kingdom.
“Oh most certainly I am those things as well,” Rollister says without any shame in it. “I am the guild master of the mage’s guild in Taeltell, yes. There is another guild master in the larger guild in the capital city, but if you are interested in mine, then surely we can talk more about it later. I am always looking for good talent to bolster the ranks.”
Also when the time persents itself, he will approach Torvin, “One would never take you as a spymaster, You practice your trade well. I was wondering if you have ever thought of teaching your skills to others and if so how you would go about it?” he asks curiously to the innkeeper.
“Yes, if anyone knew then it would spoil all of it wouldn’t it?” Torvin replies with a smile. “I find the cover quite easy to maintain as I do enjoy meeting new people and my establishment draws many in from all over.”

He thinks the question over a bit before answering, “I hadn’t put much thought into teaching. My duties are quite extensive, but I might be able to arrange some time for you depending on how this meeting plays out. If I am unable, I can certainly point you in the right direction to a good guild master in Taeltell. He taught me a few things when I was still new to the craft.”

~ ~ ~

The queen has expressed a desire to wait a little longer before revealing what she is truly after from the group. However, no one seems to have any questions for her at this early stage and, beginning first with Erizhi, others of the group begin to ask her just to share what her wishes are. Kaelyn and Sir Rovach are the next ones to say just that.
“. From what I have overheard, our realm is in danger and I wish to see it through it, Your majesty. But before I put my hand in with your plans, I would like to know just what you are asking of us. ”
“Very well,” the queen says after hearing the three adventurers speak. “I can see you all wish to get to the heart of the matter and I can respect that. First I wish to give a little background on the situation here in the kingdom. So please, indulge me in this.” She will make a sweeping gesture for anyone who might not be currently seated to do so, and will wait until everyone appears comfortable.

“On our trek here we encountered a group of mercenary soldiers moving cross-country, riding fast to the north,” Queen Aerowyn begins. “At first we thought maybe a raid by bandits had occurred but when we caught them we learned of a far more sinister plot. We arrived here in Dormare having missed the departure of your group by mere hours,” she says indicating Sir Rovach and the others who had traveled to the Makkee farm.

“Captain Maletar did not ride on with the rest of us, and instead turned towards the farm with a contingent of his men and scouts,” the queen continues. “This is where all of you encountered one another.”

“From what we learned, we knew that the Makkee farm was to look like a targeted hit by High Elf assassins who they themselves were poisoned. The mercenaries were to launch an attack into the Kingdom of Daeyshir to look like retaliation on our part. Additionally the Makkee children were to be kidnapped to up the stakes.” After a pause, she continues, “What we don’t know is who is directly behind this. It is my belief that the plot was orchestrated from the Shining Coast, but some of our own citizens were also involved. It is quite disturbing.”

“This is not the first time the Immaterians have caused us trouble,” the queen reveals. “First was the assassination of my father, the previous Magocrat, and the theft of the shard you see within my staff,” she indicates, pointing at said staff. “Without it, any rule of the kingdom would be tenuous at best, for it is a symbol of rulership throughout my families’ legacy and without it no claim could truly be verified. Thyra and I tracked my father’s assassins to Barivain and slew those we found. We had to run quite the risky raid into the heart of Immater to recover the shard and deal with the last assassin,” she looks to Thyra at this point at the pair seem to share the memory of that time for a moment.

“Sadly, there have been further attempts on my life since confirming my right to rule and my coronation,” the queen continues, “and those will hardly be the last I would imagine.”

“This brings me to what I am offering all of you,” Queen Aerowyn says. “This is a small kingdom with a lot of open tracts of unsettled land undergoing the dual challenges of recovery and growing pains. While relations are improving with our elven friends to the east and have traditionally been strong with our Baravain friends to the northwest, all eyes are watching closely to see how well I rule. Many among those believe I will fail, but I have not over these past couple years and I do not intend to. That being said, I need more eyes and ears, both within my kingdom as without.”

“What I propose is that all of you join my secret order,” she says. “It does not require you to do anything directly against any other kingdom, but instead offer me any information you might stumble upon in your adventuring. This can be done by communicating with any of the others that I have already in this organization. Some are adventurers like yourselves, others are shopkeepers, guild masters, city guards and so forth. You are all free to come and go as you please. There may be offered tasks but nothing you would be required to undertake. Everyone would retain their personal freedoms and choices, I merely ask to be informed of anything that might be vital or of use to us.”

“You might be wondering just what sort of information I may be after,” the queen offers. “Primarily anything that would lead us closer to the individuals behind this most recent plot against my people and the elves. Also any locations of lost Akorian artifacts would be of great importance to me. Recently there have been rumors of a dark ranger who is actively pursuing a number of leads to some powerful magical artifacts lost from that time. The identity of this ranger and what his motives are is a concern for the kingdom, as is whether or not he is tied in any way to this latest plot against us. Lastly, any new threats or plots against Maletar that you might stumble upon or uncover would be highly sought after.”

“So,” the queen says, leaning back in her chair and adopting a more relaxed posture, “what say you all to this?”

Sir Rovach
“So,” the queen says, leaning back in her chair and adopting a more relaxed posture, “what say you all to this?”
Sir Rovach spends a few minutes contemplating the queen’s offer to them. At last we come to the reason for this meeting, he thinks to himself. His first impression is that she wants them to be spies for her. Which, even if she may not see it, could put him in violation of his previous oaths and loyalties. As he spends a moment or two thinking this matter through, he glances around at the faces of his companions. Particularly he gazes towards Lady Erizhetiana to see how she is reacting to all this. Finally, Sir Rovach steps forward and addresses the queen.

“Your Majesty,” Sir Rovach begins, “your offer is indeed most generous. I see the need you have for such information and the desire you have for the care and well-being of your people. However, before I say yea or nay to you, I would like your permission to ask a few questions or seek clarification on this matter.”

He waits a moment for a response from the queen to proceed and then continues. “You and your associates have a responsibility to protect your people. I too have sworn an oath to protect my people. Yet these two responsibilities do not have to be mutually exclusive. In addition I have given my loyalty, and my life, to Anu for the good of all in his name. For me, this takes priority over any earthly power. But once again, none of these oaths or responsibilities have to conflict with each other in the least.”

“Conflict between any two nations, between Immater and Maletar or any other kingdoms you may think of, is never good for the people of those kingdoms. What I promise is to pass along any information to you that will prevent bloodshed between our two nations. What I promise to you is to investigate when possible and pass along to you any information on the perpetrators of this foul plot. What I promise to you is to look out for the welfare of both Immaterian and Maletarian.”

Catching his breath, he studies the queen’s reaction to his latest statement and continues again. “It has been said that insanity is to continue doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. You have already suffered a number of assassination attempts. You obviously are taking steps to reduce these. But what we have here is the opportunity to maybe go further; an opportunity to pursue better diplomatic relations between our two kingdoms.” He quickly glances over at Lady Erizhetiana. He wonders if Anu himself, maybe in cooperation with Ishtar, had a hand in placing her here as a type of unofficial ambassador, knowing the need that would arise between the two kingdoms. “Evil individuals exists in all lands and is not exclusive to anyone. We must have more in common with each other than that, and then build a relationship upon those good traits we have in common. And that is a goal worth working towards, for the overall good of both our peoples. ”

“As for any artifacts, please forgive me if this comes across as rude, for I do not intend it to. But I will not be a treasure hunter for anyone in particular. Especially such powerful, legendary items who’s power has the potential to corrupt the hearts of many good intentioned individuals. What I will promise is to keep any such items out of the hands of evil. I promise to work towards returning any found items to their rightful owners, or their rightful decendants, as long as they will not be put to evil use. This includes you and your people. Does this sound fair to you or what you intended?”

Finishing up his speech to the Queen, he brings up his final topic. “I would also like to know more about this ‘Dark Ranger’ you mentioned. Also, when you refer to ‘Dark” do you mean evil, selfish, or something else? For I promise, if he is an evil individual causing harm to the people of this land, then he is indeed my foe.”

“I thank you for your time, your Majesty, and hope I have not given offense to you or your associates. For as stated before, you have been most kind and generous to strangers such as us and I thank you again for your kindness.” Sir Rovach will give the Queen a low bow. “I await any response or questions for me you may have.”

Reversing a chair and straddling it, Kaelyn leans on the back of the chair as he listens to the queen speak.

“What I propose is that all of you join my secret order,” she says. “It does not require you to do anything directly against any other kingdom, but instead offer me any information you might stumble upon in your adventuring. Interesting that one such as the queen would want a commoners help but then there is more of a chance for a commoner to see or hear something the none of the internals here. Thinking it over briefly, Kaelyn speaks up, due to his confusion of a certain matter.
“ I can understand your thinking my queen, knowledge can be indeed powerful for those that seek it. Though I am curious, I spoke to your cousin about some information I overheard. At first he seemed to believe me but then,” , looking at the captian for a moment, “ At other times it felt as though he thought I was lying and made jests at my behalf as well as yours. Is this the type of payment I can expect for my loyalty and information, to be mocked and jeered at like a fool?” he says respectfully but his eyes show that of acold look.. “If it is so, then you can count on me not.”

Maldos Goldenmane seems to pick up on Aesa’s attempts at courtesy towards him and the other high elven guests. To his part he doesn’t respond openly, but rather studies Aesa a bit as if he might be able to glean the reason for her discomfort or dislike by doing so.
Not so discreet, Aesa chides herself. Still to his credit the High Elf doesn't respond but watches her more intently. Aesa does what she can to largely ignore his scrutiny.
"He is a fine animal," Aesa says to Thyra. "He seems quite content and the two of you have quite the bond," she adds, clearly impressed. She will return the Ranger General's smile before moving away to find a seat.

Aesa listens quietly as the Queen finally reveals what she wants from everyone. Thinking about it, it sounds like she wants to be the first to get information of those against her kingdom. It is a clever idea, Aesa thinks. Few would suspect adventurers, shopkeepers, merchants and the like looking for information rather than offical envoys or armored soldiers.

Sir Rovach voices some very important questions which Aesa is curious to hear the answers. She is already leaning towards accepting the offer but better to be certain of all the finer details. Kaelyn speaks up too, but Aesa isn't exactly sure what he's getting at. What cousin? she ponders. Maybe someone she didn't meet, when he was a child or something. It also seems to her that the queen was pretty clear what the rewards would be, so Aesa isn't sure what her companion is getting at.
That which must be done will be done.

Mythnar and Myrenia sit quietly, listening and observing. Not sure if they should really involve themselves in this situation, certainly working for the betterment of elven culture was important but was it worth their time and effort. So far they were not sure.

It would seem as though the conversation with Sir Rovach comes to an abrupt end. All the better as it turns out since the Queen of Maletar is prepared to reveal exactly what she wishes of those gathered here.

During the speech, Redjak will on occassion look over to Zarya to gauge her reaction to what is being presented them. Our desires have already been agreed upon to a degree, he thinks. Anything further would just ultimately help us.

“So,” the queen says, leaning back in her chair and adopting a more relaxed posture, “what say you all to this?”

Redjak listens to the various questions presented by these adventurers. Sir Rovach appears willing to listen further but cautious. Clearly the paladin has a number of other concerns weighing upon him. This other man, Kaelyn, appears to have been slighted at some time in his past by these rulers. Most of the others keep their tongues and seem to be waiting for further reply by the Queen. Redjak thinks this is wise, although he is pretty sure which way he and Zarya will go. Now to see if we go it alone...
For our family, our people, our kingdom, we will prevail!

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

(from the conversation in the dining room with Valeos)

Vaelos looks at Erizhi for a moment, his face largely unreadable, “Just because a few Wood Elves say it’s haunted hardly makes it so. As far as asking a banshee anything, you are most welcome to try.”

"Well," she responds with a wry smile, "if it's not haunted, then there is no banshee to worry about. If it is then, maybe there's a chance to find these artifacts. I am not suggesting just walking up to it and striking up a chat. There are other ways to possibly learn such information."

(current)

At the same time, Erizhi is quite wary. "A very generous offer you make, Your Majesty. I am certain that you have intrigued some part within each one of us with your generosity."

“That is my hope, of course,” the queen replies with a smile.

Erizhi with smile slightly and nod, without any further response, as nothing more need be said.

Erizhi sees Rovach going about his introductions to the four guests.

"Odd", thinks Erizhi. "What is she trying to get at?" Obviously there are question such as why this group, where are they currently, what sort of enemies are dogging the heels of this new queen - both internally and foreign. But none of them measure up to the details of her offer at this moment.

Erizhi catches the look from Rovach, just after the queen seemed to be directly addressing her. She does her best to deflect it and he does not mention anything at this time. He does then reiterate her own thoughts about getting to the meat of this mysterious meeting. The others seem just as eager or else too awestruck to ask further questions.

Finally the queen explains the reason for bringing them here. Erizhi wonders even more, why them? The only thing she can imagine is deniability. It is as unlikley as Torvin being the spymaster. Belonging to a secret order has a certain appeal to the young priestess. She fancied herself the shrewd negotiator and witty converser. And certainly there was no denying her considerable charm. Even if many in this less cultured country took longer to appreciate it. Erizhi waited to see what the others would say, while she continued to roll the offer about in her head.

Rovach has an involved response, that seems to neither confirm nor deny his own interest. He looks at her as he discusses better relations between their homeland and this young queen and she looks back without showing any emotion either way.

Kaelyn then responds and Erizhi has to avert her eyes a moment, as the man mentions the chiding that Kelyn received at the table earlier from Tamberlaine and his men. The Captain was a brutish bore, but bringing it up to the queen, his half-sister, was either foolish or bold. The Queen's response, and that of the present Captain, would soon tell that result.

Aesa seems about to say something, but she continues to hold her tongue. The others also have not said anything. It appears as those everyone is waiting for someone else to make a decision and Erzhi has approached this in much the same way, cautiously waiting.

She thinks a little longer. There are advantages and disadvantages which both spring to mind. While she has no direct loyalty to this land and she has no desire to betray her own kingdom, this may be just the unexpected opportunity she needed. It also could be deadly if she was thought to be a spy or a traitor to Immater. She had likely enough troubles waiting for her at home already.

Erizhi purses here lips a moment as she makes a decision. While everyone seems to be looking at everyone else, the priestess will stand, raising herself up as tall as her diminutive frame will allow. She will look everyone over quickly, then bow slightly again to the queen. "I, Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan, am in." She pauses for a moment. "How does this begin?" she will then ask simply.

Aesa -
"He is a fine animal," Aesa says to Thyra. "He seems quite content and the two of you have quite the bond," she adds, clearly impressed. She will return the Ranger General's smile before moving away to find a seat.
“We have been together a long time,” the Ranger General reveals. “I couldn't imagine being anywhere without him at my side.”

Sir Rovach -
“Your Majesty,” Sir Rovach begins, “your offer is indeed most generous. I see the need you have for such information and the desire you have for the care and well-being of your people. However, before I say yea or nay to you, I would like your permission to ask a few questions or seek clarification on this matter.”
“Of course,” Queen Aerowyn replies. “I would expect nothing less.” With that, she waits patiently for the paladin to continue.

As Sir Rovach speaks, she listens attentively and does not interrupt. She also shows very little else to the paladin, keeping her face neutral. The elf, Maldos Goldenmane is also quite interested in what is being said, especially when Sir Rovach mentions Anu. He closely studies the paladin after that revelation. The others, even Rollester surprisingly, maintain an appearance of patience during this time.
…“Evil individuals exists in all lands and is not exclusive to anyone. We must have more in common with each other than that, and then build a relationship upon those good traits we have in common. And that is a goal worth working towards, for the overall good of both our peoples. ”
The Queen takes this moment to finally interject. “Truly well spoken,” she begins. “You indeed have the grasp of it. I have no desire to keep any information out of Immater, or any kingdom’s, hands. If we come to learn this plot has originated from any land, then it’s rulers will also be informed. Additionally, no one will be given any order to cross a kingdom’s borders under a Maletar banner. Should you decide to do so, it will be as adventurers, nothing more.”

“I will also stress you are not to be spies,” the queen says firmly. “There is a distinct difference here in what I am asking. Let me make this perfectly clear, I am not asking or condoning that you spy on anyone. Stumbling upon a group of mercenaries intent on foul deeds or finding documents or maps on a fallen foe is more of what I am suggesting to be passed on.”
“You are reaching the same destination by taking a different path,” the Queen says with a soft smile. “Most adventurers I know are indeed treasure hunters. That is how the majority maintain their lifestyle. There are a lot of lost artifacts and treasure troves from ancient times out there. What I propose is merely the chance to look upon what is found. Possibly catalogue it or, if it is something none of you have a desire to keep, then purchase it fairly from you. If however, you still do not wish to do this, then yes, keeping it out of the hands of evil beings or creatures is perfectly acceptable to me.”
Queen Aerowyn looks to Thyra at this point, saying, “If you would, dear Thyra. You are far more knowledgeable here than I am at present on this matter.”

With that, Thyra addresses Sir Rovach’s questions, including the group in her telling. “Right,” she starts, her voice rougher and more business-like than the queen’s melodical one. “Dark rangers are quite rare with only a handful known throughout history. They are indeed evil but none are believed to have ever started out that way. It simply goes against all we are taught and revere. The last known one was Barvos Fallowen who was infected with lycanthropy,” she says as her gaze falls on Redjak. “This made him quite the formidable foe; savage, cunning, brutal and very hard to track down.”

“Also there are those who are such zealots for the cause of good that they can cross the moral line and fall from grace,” she drifts off on the last words, seemingly turning somewhat self-reflective.
“I thank you for your time, your Majesty, and hope I have not given offense to you or your associates. For as stated before, you have been most kind and generous to strangers such as us and I thank you again for your kindness.” Sir Rovach will give the Queen a low bow. “I await any response or questions for me you may have.”
“It is my hope to forge something here that will benefit all kingdoms,” the Queen says. “I thank you for bringing your thoughts and questions to light and await your further decision upon hearing our responses.”

Kaelyn -
“ I can understand your thinking my queen, knowledge can be indeed powerful for those that seek it.
Rollester actually manages a giggle at this. “Oh my boy, you are indeed most welcome in my guild! If you manage to keep your head that is…” he says, trailing off the last words.

Captain Maletar looks like he is about to launch into a tirade, possibly coming up out of his chair for it, but Queen Aerowyn intervenes. “I did say you could ask me anything,” she states, attempting to keep the peace by dominating the conversation. “Should you accept my offer then the likelihood that any of you will see myself or any of the others here will be slim at best. Unless you choose to directly interact with Torvin or Rollester, you will be passing information on to shop keepers, fellow adventurers and the like. If something is of vital importance or needs further clarification, then one of us might summon the lot of you for such purpose.”

“Compensation will be dependant upon what might be retrieved or learned,” the queen continues. “There is no set fare and should one of you desire lands while another desire coin, then it will be handled quite differently.”

“However, if you feel you have been wrongly slighted,” Queen Aerowyn turns more serious, “then you may challenge my half-brother to a duel of honor as is your right. None here will delay such a request.” She waits to see what Kaelyn wishes at this point before continuing.

“Should you, or any of the others,” she eventually continues, looking to those who have yet to speak up, “decide this is not for you, then you are free to leave. Masters Torvin and Rollester will escort you out momentarily,” she says with a wave of her hand towards them. The two stand and prepare to lead the way out for any not interested in hearing more or joining.

Erizhi -
(from the conversation in the dining room with Valeos)

"Well," she responds with a wry smile, "if it's not haunted, then there is no banshee to worry about. If it is then, maybe there's a chance to find these artifacts. I am not suggesting just walking up to it and striking up a chat. There are other ways to possibly learn such information."
Vaelos simply raises an eyebrow in response, but the look on his face is doubtful. It is possible he is remembering Erizhi’s attempts to persuade him from his course of action and how well that worked out for her.
(current)

Erizhi purses here lips a moment as she makes a decision. While everyone seems to be looking at everyone else, the priestess will stand, raising herself up as tall as her diminutive frame will allow. She will look everyone over quickly, then bow slightly again to the queen. "I, Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan, am in." She pauses for a moment. "How does this begin?" she will then ask simply.
The Queen manages to hide a shocked look from her face even if only barely. Perhaps she believed the Immaterians would be the hardest to convince. Instead though, she smiles pleasantly and says, “Splendid then. This will all begin once I know how the others choose and any not interested have returned to their beds or wherever they wish to go. Until that time is reached, we must wait.”

Dareos smiles at Erizhi, clearly pleased she has offered herself to this cause. Torvin is also quite receptive to her decision. The other four prominent individuals remain largely unreadable with Captain Maletar seemingly having thoughts on something far different.

Aesa:

Aesa listens as Maletar's Queen answers all of the questions and also manages to keep a fight from beaking out, at least for now. Hopefully Kaelyn won't agitate things further, she thinks. She continues to weigh all sides, examining each from another angle. Aesa can not see where this offer could possibly do them any harm. We aren't being sent after targets, she recaps in her head, but rather bringing back information on what we might find.

Aesa is shaken from her thoughts by Erizhi, who stands and proclaims she is going to join. The offer must be quite enticing for her, the druidess smiles inwardly. The twin elves all save but their gender, join in as well, or at least the male does. So far they have been secretive, unfriendly and far too quiet to be up to any good, Aesa thinks. She remembers having been noticed once already by the elf, Maldos and so quickly regains her neutral composure.

Aesa will stand after a moment, having made her decision. She will address the queen and the others, companions and nobility alike. "I, Aesa, hailing from Rhidhelmark and a Druidess of the Golden Bear will lend my support to this endeavor," she will say formally. She will then sit back down and await the decision of the others.
That which must be done will be done.

Sir Rovach listens to the Queen's response to his previous questions, satisfied with the answers she gave him. He then hears Mister Kaelyn speak up with questions of his own. I had no idea he was upset about prior comments from the Captain, he thinks. However, the Queen answers his questiona as well, in what appears to Sir Rovach in a polite and diplomatic way. Now to wait to see how he responds.

He also hears Lady Erizhetiana joins in right away, without any doubt or hesitation on her part. Looks like she too see's the benefits of this partnership as well. The twin elves, whom Sir Rovach has yet to speak to, give their acceptance. This is quickly followed by Lady Aesa.

"Your Magisty," Sir Rovach stepping forward and begins, "I thank you for clearing up certain matters. As for me, for the good of all our people, I dedicate my sword to this cause as well. May this be the first step towards something greater for us all."

He will step back, awaiting the Queen's next response and hoping Sir Redjak and Mister Kaelyn will join in this cause as well.

“Also there are those who are such zealots for the cause of good that they can cross the moral line and fall from grace,” she drifts off on the last words, seemingly turning somewhat self-reflective.

Redjak studies Thyra for a moment after she reveals this. Could she, or someone she knew closely, have had such a trying time? Although curiosity now peaked, Redjak does not pursue nor allow Thyra to notice his reaction.

“Should you, or any of the others,” she eventually continues, looking to those who have yet to speak up, “decide this is not for you, then you are free to leave. Rollester actually manages a giggle at this. “Oh my boy, you are indeed most welcome in my guild! If you manage to keep your head that is…” he says, trailing off the last words.
Kaelyn looks over to the mage and hears the mirth and sorrow in his voice.
‘You are treading on dangerous ground.’ He thinks to himself as he looks to the queen’s half-brother,whom looks like he is going to blow a vein in his neck. His icy blue eyes return to the queen as she begins to speak of reclaiming his honor.
‘Very well your, majesty.” He says with an incline of his head

His eyes glance over to the Captain for but a moment then return to the Queen, as the thought of crossing swords with her half brother and captain. ‘This can only add badly.’ He thinks to himself. “Honor is a luxury a thief can not afford,“ he says with an easy smile, “And I am no fool to cross swords with a man within your service. To fight over words that are as empty and hollow as a passing wind would only assist those that threaten this country and it’s allies.” He says looking to the others in his party.
“My sword and spells are at your disposal, my queen.” He says with a slight bow. “The only reason I voiced my concerns, to make what I heard of an assassination attempt, perhaps on your life and a fleet of ships arriving on our shores, was not over looked by that of the amusement of those I entrusted it to. I hope you may forgive brashness.”

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

The Queen of Maletar seems pleased with Rovach's assessment of the situation and has her ranger explain more about this 'Dark Ranger'. There are some interesting nuances int he conversation that she is able to identify but not understand, until Redjak speaks up and confirms that one of these came from his ancestors. Not surprising, considering what she has heard about those Isles. Allthough seeing both him and his lady, Erizhi wonders how much truth there is to the stories.

As the Immaterian priestess is the first to stand and offer herself to this cause, Erizhi will notice the surprised look on the Queen's face. It is fleeting, but Erizhi does not outwardly acknowledge it. Inside however, she is pleased to know that such may exist. She quickly sends the forming thoughts from her head. Catching Dareos' smile as she glances about the assemblage, she will wink briefly back. She also returns Torvin's slight smile. Tamberliane is not even looking at her however. That is not a big surprise considering the lout's already displayed lack of manners. He instead seems to be shooting daggers at Kaelyn with his eyes.

“Splendid then. This will all begin once I know how the others choose and any not interested have returned to their beds or wherever they wish to go. Until that time is reached, we must wait.”

Erizhi will bow her head courteously and take her seat again, crossing one leg over the other. Plans begin to form in her head once more.

Before long, following her own lead, people start to accept the Queen's offer. First Rovach and Aesa. Then the elf twins. She considers them for a few moments, trying hard not to stare. Well, she concludes, just because they will be part of this assemblage does not mean they will be constant companions. Redjak and his lady make their desires known. And their magpie, Kaelyn, offers some deft verbal manuevers that seem to have gotten him out of harm's way for the moment. Near total acceptance. All that remained were the halfling Butternut and the amazon Stephanie. And they had been silent through this whole endeavor, so Erizhi could not gage their level of interest or lack thereof. "What say the last of you?" Erizhi will interject, curiousity wanting to see this through to the next stage.

I hope you may forgive brashness.”
“Captain Maletar has indeed passed on what you had mentioned to him,” the Queen confirms, “although we have yet to speak at length about it. He is taking it quite seriously as am I, I assure you. If you have further information on these matters, I do indeed wish to hear such.”

~ ~ ~

All of the companions and the newest additions have agreed to join the Queen’s secret order except for Stephanie and Butternut who have been strangely quiet since the return from the farm. It would seem as though the two of them have been weighing all that they had observed, heard and seen and have yet to make a decision. Finally the pair stands up separately and seemingly they have no desire to join. Rollester and the innkeeper motion to them to follow and begin to lead them back to the spot where everyone entered this private pocket realm.

GM Note: Either player can still post should they choose, and can even change their mind and still join. I just knew we might lose these two and so am giving them the opportunity to return home or pursue their own agendas. There is also the possibility to encounter them at a much later time, even if they don’t choose to join the order. Nothing is saying the group can’t adventure with non-order members, just that those who aren’t won’t be getting the extra perks is all.

Parting Shoots

Post by Stephanie »

Former Player Note:

What follows amounts to what's going to be Stephanie's final post. Given it's negative and inflammatory nature I wasn't going to post it since it was most likely going to be the last one anyone and didn't see any point and why rain on the parade of those of you who enjoy the game. I gave the GM a rough idea of what she would do, but then he wimped out on doing any of it.

And so, for closure's sake, here's her parting shoots, as there is no way she would even consider going off with this group, assuming what she says to the queen doesn’t get her beheaded. Nothing personal with anyone, just the way this character feels.

“Are you insane?” Stephanie says in complete astonishment in response to her supposed queen. “We're dragged here by sword point so that you can out all your secret advisers to a bunch of untrustworthy strangers. There could be and probably are spies among them? Why would anyone do something so stupid?”

“Your---”, Stephanie pauses as if trying to find the right word and settles on the wrong one, “Queeness, these people simply cannot be trusted! Aesa is the best among them, but she's a bear in human. Nutterbut is crazy and Caitlin an admitted thief and who knows what else?”

“And as for these foreigner's, they are easily the worst of the lot. They cannot be trusted and anyone who does so is a fool! They come here with foreigner names and titles and try to push and boss us around like all their kind does. Just ask the Knight Captain just how both of them expected him to submit to their whims and demands! Their kind treat us like lessers as do both of them.”

Stephanie turns towards the so-called 'priestess of war' with the unpronounceable name.

“And she is clearly the worst of the lot. She schemes and manipulates and calls herself something she is clearly not. Priestess of War? Seriously?”

Pointing at her while looking back at the rest Stephanie continues with, “Does she look like a warrior to any of you? Warriors have scars from battles! Can you see a single one, assuming you could find them underneath all that ridiculous make up?”

“Warriors wear hard armor,” Stephanie continues, slapping her chest plate for emphasis. “They don't go prancing around in soft, girly armor! Clearly she is a bold faced liar and all of you just accepted it without question!”

“But that's what she does... She uses and manipulate people with her words. Twists people to her desires”

Stephanie pauses once more, as if lost in thought. But then a metaphorical light goes off over her head and she spins around rapidly and with her balled fist punches the priestess right in the face, most likely knocking her on her skinny butt!

“You did that to me! You made me loose control back at the farm! Did you think I wouldn’t figure it out?”

(Okay, it took most of a day....)

“If I EVER see you again, I will kill you!”

Having said her piece, Stephanie turns and leaves with the innkeeper, assuming she doesn't get beheaded for insulting the queen first. But then she pauses once more and looks to the queen.

"I don't need bribes to do the right thing. Perhaps you need to have more faith in your own people."

Goodbye, good luck. You're going to need it...

GM Notes

Post by GM Fenrir »

GM Notes: Nothing personal taken. Glad to have had you along for the time you were. If you ever wish to join up again, you are most welcome to. I highly doubt it will be with Stephanie for obvious reasons! :) As far as me wimping out, you're right, but I knew I couldn't capture what Stephanie was feeling properly, so thank you for the final post.

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

As stated several times, nothing personal intended. This is just character to character.

Stephanie suddenly rouses herself from her silent stupor, as nearly all of the group have accepted Queen Maletar’s generous offer, save her and Butternut. Erizhi probably should not be shocked by this sudden outburst, but still she is.
“Are you insane?” Stephanie says in complete astonishment in response to her supposed queen. “We're dragged here by sword point so that you can out all your secret advisers to a bunch of untrustworthy strangers. There could be and probably are spies among them? Why would anyone do something so stupid?”
Erizhi’s mouth goes wide and she quickly covers it with her hand. Erizhi is embarrassed to even be in the presence of someone so base and low that they do not have the slightest semblance of manners. The priestess looks to the Queen to judge her reaction, as she finally manages to regain her own composure.

“I am ashamed that I ever considered you to be any sort of ally, wench," the priestess says, turning back to Stephanie, and wagging her finger in the air. "You are the only one of our group who has begun to show any sort of untrustworthiness. You attempted a blatant lie to Captain Maletar regarding the paladin and myself, attempting apparently to claim the victory for yourself alone. And your impudent insolence and galling lack of respect is an affront to all of us present, notwithstanding your own Queen!” Erizhi will turn to the Queen and bow her head slightly. “Accept the apologies of our group, Majesty. This... person... is not one of us.” Erizhi will turn back to the woman, glaring as she does so. “Clearly!”

Stephanie continues her rudeness and insults to her Queen however.

“And as for these foreigners, they are easily the worst of the lot. They cannot be trusted and anyone who does so is a fool! They come here with foreigner names and titles and try to push and boss us around like all their kind does. Just ask the Knight Captain just how both of them expected him to submit to their whims and demands! Their kind treat us like lessers as do both of them.”
Erizhi just shakes her head in absolute disbelief and a mocking chuckle escapes her lips.

Twists people to her desires.”
Erizhi will stand to face these new direct accusations. She will look the person named Stephanie up and down with a look of disdain. “I do not even know where to begin to refute such foolishness. Perhaps I intimidate you? Perhaps you are jealous? You seek to ridicule me for my beauty and my appearance? You smell worse than the dog who lives in the stables.“ Erizhi will sweep her hand to the Queen of Maletar. “Look to your own Queen. She is a shining example of beauty and feminity. Just because you are a man trapped in a woman’s body, does not mean everyone else should be so devoid of attractiveness.”

“As for understanding War, yes, I am a priestess of the War goddess. You only seem to understand combat and likely will never comprehend the difference between combat and war. And even at that, I would question whether simply charging into conflict as a singular tactic could ever make one considered to be a warrior, but rather simply a fool.” Erizhi just shakes her head, unable to comprehend the complete lack of manners in this armoured lout.

Erizhi turns to sit back down and suddenly there is a violent pain in her face and she is thrust to the ground from the force of it. Stephanie is the cause of this sudden attack!
“You did that to me! You made me lose control back at the farm! Did you think I wouldn’t figure it out?”

“If I EVER see you again, I will kill you!”
Erizhi will sit up and blink her eyes a few times to clear her head. She looks back at the amazon with anger-filled eyes. But her words are very calm and even. “You ignorant fool. You lost control, because you have no control. Just as you lose control now. You are no better than a mad dog that attacks anything it does not understand.” Erizhi will glance at her hand, red with blood that is still flowing slowly from one nostril. She remains sitting in place, but is not through confronting her aggressor. “My words, my training, are to inspire warriors to greater feats of strength and daring. On you they merely sent a beast to unthinking rage. Take responsibility for yourself and quit blaming others. That and hate is all the seems to spew from your frothing lips.”

“You are supposed to be some sort of hero around these communities. How would these people like to hear the truth? That a foreign man, the paladin Rovach, showed more compassion and care toward the slaughtered villagers than their own kindred? Just a day’s work for the mighty warrior Stephanie apparently.”

“Know this, cow. You shall have your wish. There is now ‘vrazhda’ between us.” Erizhi looks at her new enemy again. ‘Perhaps I shall pluck your eyes out of that brainless head while you sleep,’ the priestess thinks to herself. Erizhi will not take her eyes from her attacker until that person is escorted from their presence.

(I am sure no one expected Eri to just say, "okay, see ya!" after that.)

Sir Rovach
“Are you insane?” Stephanie says in complete astonishment in response to her supposed queen. “We're dragged here by sword point so that you can out all your secret advisers to a bunch of untrustworthy strangers. There could be and probably are spies among them? Why would anyone do something so stupid?”
What is this!? Sir Rovach is shocked at the response Stephanie gives her own Queen. She may not agree with her, but to openly show such disrespect at this time is unbelievable to him. Especially to one such as her Queen who has been nothing but courtious and charitable to a group of strangers.
Enough of this. "The Captain understands the concepts of honor and keeping a promise one has given." Sir Rovach responds to her accusation. "Concepts that appear to be unknown to you, Stephanie" Once again, he says her name without the title Lady used. Setting his helmet down on the nearest piece of furniture, he steps forward to address her challenge to him.

But Stephanie quickly launches into a tirade against Lady Erizhetiana.

"You wish to prove yourself a true "warrior" Stephanie?" Sir Rovach steps up. "For you are not. But I am here and accept your challenge. Step forth if you accept, or prove yourself craven before all in attendance. For you have not only wronged myself, but a good and kind Lady too." He motions to Lady Erizhetiana as he says this. "And you have insulted every Maletarian by your actions here this evening."

However, Stephanie seems to ignore him, her anger concentrated on Lady Erizhetiana. But Lady Erizhetiana is not long in responding back.

To draw steel in the Queen's presence would be insulting, but Sir Rovach cannot let such comments go and call himself honorable. But once again, Stephanie reacts towards Lady Erizhetiana, this conflict seemingly coming to and end. But not the conclusion he expects...

“If I EVER see you again, I will kill you!”
Sir Rovach sees Stephanie take a swing at Lady Erizhetiana, knocking Lady Erizhetiana to the ground. He will now quickly place himself between Stephanie and Lady Erizhetiana so she cannot be attacked again, especially since Stephanie has shown herself without honor and would probally not hesitate to attack someone at such a disadvantage. "Step forward warrior, and pit your so-called strength against mine!" He raises his mailed fists, ready to receive an attack from Stephanie, but Lady Erizhetiana addresses her for one final time.
Erizhi will sit up and blink her eyes a few times to clear her head. She looks back at the amazon with anger-filled eyes. But her words are very calm and even. “You ignorant fool. You lost control, because you have no control. Just as you lose control now. “Know this, cow. You shall have your wish. There is now ‘vrazhda’ between us.”
I'm no hero, my Lady. Sir Rovach thinks to himself, grateful for Lady Erizhetiana's kind words. I did nothing more than any other good person with the means to respond would do. He will listen to Lady Erizhetiana's final comment to Stephanie, adding his own. "And our challenge still remains in regards to your insults. And know this: being a warrior is more than about the armor you wear or the weapons you carry. One day, when you are couragous enough, I will teach you this lesson." He will continue to stand between Stephanie and Lady Erizhetiana, his fists raised and ready for an attack, until Stephanie is removed from the area or she decides to accept his challenge and settle the matter of honor....

You might see the character some day, but it will never be in any group or organization that has Eri in it. That much is certain.

“We were NEVER allies,” Stephanie counters. “You have no concept of what a friend or an ally is. To you, all we are your servants and that is how you treat us. You come here with this 'look at me doing missionary work among the peasants' attitude and think we shall fall on our hands and knees and be grateful for it.”

“As for what I told the Captain, every word of it was true. You and your friend were not at the farm when it was talked, but that in itself doesn’t preclude you have any involvement in it. After all your own countrymen were there and were known to you. Coincidence? I think not.”

“If you think there was any kind of victory there, you sadly deluded. A family was butcher. That is all that matters and that seems to have been forgotten in your little celebration since.”

“And you are right for a change. I am not one of you. I would never betray my country to side with the likes of you.”

(And since she is not now or never will be a lady in the noble use of the word, it was improper to call her that anyway. :D )

“Intimidate me? You? You're as intimidating as a ewe.”

Stephanie actually laughs at the thought of her being Jealous of the so called priestess.

“If anyone is delusional here, it is clearly you. I could never be jealous of anyone who makes themselves up like some carnival clown.”

“You're right... I have lost control ever since you worked your evil magic on me. I have been completely out of my head...”

“And your mere presence is an insult to everyone who lives in this country. Go back home and leave us in peace for a change. We're tired of being bullied by the likes of you. But if it is battle you wish, then so be it. Better to fight your evil now and be done with it or die in the attempt to save my countrymen from the likes of you two.”
Sir Rovach listens while Stephanie has accepted the challenge issued to her; not as formal as what he is used to but as proper as allowed considering the escalation that has occurred in the last few moments. Now he must do what he must. Not only in answer to the insults she has publicly said about him and his friends, nor only in response to her strike against Lady Erizhetiana. But because she appears obviously out of control. Her anger and hatred of others who are different has blinded her, clouding her mind and creating a false perception. And now those emotions of hers have led to an attack on his newly made friends.

He thinks for a moment while Stephanie sputters some more malice in their direction, wondering if it is proper to continue this in the company of the Queen. Then he remembers the Queen's words spoken to Mister Kaelyn only minutes before...
“However, if you feel you have been wrongly slighted,” Queen Aerowyn turns more serious, “then you may challenge my half-brother to a duel of honor as is your right. None here will delay such a request.” She waits to see what Kaelyn wishes at this point before continuing.
Remembering this, Sir Rovach is comfortable that all is proper in regards to protocol. A small sigh escapes his lips has he clears all emotion from his body & focuses his thoughts purely on Stephanie herself. He knew deep in his heart there would be people in this world like Stephanie. Sir Atohmos warned him. And now Anu has placed this kind of person before him.
“But isn't that part of your plan?” Stephanie continues with her thought from earlier. Her mind slowly piecing things together. “So this is how you work is it? You bedevil some one, drive them mad and then your accomplice steps and puts the mad dog down somehow satisfying his honor?”

Looking back to the others, she adds, “And you fools have delivered these assassins into the presence of the queen...”

With her hand her blade, Steph awaits Rowback's inevitable attack in his attempt to assassinate her.
"Then you accept the challenge." Sir Rovach responds to Stephanie. Seeing her hand on her blade, he continues. "I had my fists ready based upon your attack on Lady Erizhetiana. But I see you choose to settle this with weapons of steel. So be it." Sir Rovach draws his two-handed sword out, not too quickly nor too fast, and holds it up in salute to Stephanie. With his eyes never leaving hers, he then assumes a fighting stance. "Let us end this now Stephanie."

OOC: Once she draws her sword (and not before) he will believe mutual consent to duel is officially given and combat begins.

Aesa:

It seems as though Stephanie and Butternut aren't interested in the Queen's offer. They stand up and look to be ready to be led out, however it seems Stephanie is mulling something over. Aesa had tried to talk to her during the ride back from the farm, but the fellow warrior woman seemed somewhere else entirely, deep in her thoughts. Aesa just figured she was dealing with the tragedy in her own way. Clearly she was dealing with something else far more troubling to her.

First Stephanie calls out the Queen on some poor decision making and then begins her attack on the group. Even Aesa herself is challenged by being less than human and apparently not trustworthy. Clearly she doesn't know the druidic ways, Aesa thinks to herself. Else she wouldn't make such an error. Really though, that is of minor importance given how she's reacting toward the Queen. It's all Aesa can do to not cringe at the comments.

Things escalate quickly as Stephanie turns her full fury towards the true target of her anger - Erizhi. Sir Rovach jumps up to Erizhi's defense after Stephanie knocks the noble woman down with a quick punch to the nose. Sir Rovach has been itching for a fight since Rollester's antics and Aesa is beginning to fear the worst, especially when the paladin draws steel.

"Sadly there is only one fool among us at the moment," Aesa says, although it is clear that Stephanie is too far gone in whatever rage and paranoia she has wrapped herself in. She will add regardless, "I still believe Erizhi has some questions needing answered, but hardly in the manner you wish to extract them"

She will turn her eyes towards Sir Rovach, tears forming on them. "I wouldn't advise it, but you are on your own path. Clearly Stephanie is not in her right mind and you only mean to put her down like a rabid animal..." Whatever more she was going to say is caught in her throat and she turns away from the coming scene of blood and death.
That which must be done will be done.

Before Stephanie and Butternut can be led out it appears there are a number of things Stephanie no longer wishes to remain silent on.

The sound of chairs being slid back forcefully can be heard as both Captain Maletar and Thyra are on their feet. Hands are on blades not quite drawn when the Queen motions with her own hand that her people should stand down.

“Just because a person is foreign-born does not make them untrustworthy,” Queen Aerowyn says softly. “Sadly this plot all of you uncovered was also instigated by some of our very own countrymen. What does that say about us then, I wonder?”

Stephanie turns her attentions to Erizhi before the Queen has time to say much else. All of the rulers and council members give pause to watch this drama play out, although no one who stood has yet to return to their seats.
Stephanie pauses once more, as if lost in thought. But then a metaphorical light goes off over her head and she spins around rapidly and with her balled fist punches the priestess right in the face, most likely knocking her on her skinny butt!
Only those closely watching, which most assuredly is NOT Erizhi at this point, will see Captain Maletar smirk upon the priestess getting floored by Stephanie. The elf, Maldos Goldenmane looks quite disgusted at this undisciplined behavior being shown by the warrior woman. Dareos is in shock and Thyra is just clearly agitated. The Queen purses her lips in distaste.

The verbal assaults continue and Sir Rovach rises to Erizhi’s defense. No one is relenting however, and things continue to escalate. Eventually steel is drawn and it looks as though blood is about to be shed. Before it can get any worse, The Queen says one word, a name actually, “Rollester!”

Like that, no one can see. The entire area is drenched in darkness so thick you can almost taste it. Even those with infravision can not penetrate it.

“Enough of this childish behavior!” the Queen says, finding her commanding voice and using it to full effect. It seems to appear behind, above, below, everywhere around each character. “There will be no blood shed in this sacred place regardless of whatever wrongs you believe have occurred. Perhaps I was wrong in believing that you adventurers were what this kingdom needed.”

“As for you, the peasant hero Stephanie, I find your lack of faith disturbing,” Queen Aerowyn continues, her voice seeming everywhere and nowhere at once. “It is true that I may be error, but possibly only about you. I would have thought you would have been honored to serve your kingdom in this manner. Clearly you simply wish to insult and belittle all those around you.”

“Whether my decisions are foolish or crazy, they are MINE to make,” she continues. “I am Queen of this kingdom by blood. If you wish no part of it, then fine you are free to leave. I would have enjoyed discussing your concerns at this table but instead you remain quiet until it is time for you to depart and then you attack my character? I will NOT be treated in such a manner. You are free to go find a kingdom of your own as soon as you gather your things. I wish you the best of luck in that endeavor. The good Captain will see you to the border of your choosing.”

The darkness fades and suddenly the characters find themselves intermingled with the council members. Seemingly the darkness did not affect them in the slightest. Dareos has moved and offered a hand to help Erizhi up. Fury the bear and Thyra have interjected themselves in front of Sir Rovach. Captain Maletar grabs the hand Stephanie was going to use to draw her blade. Rollester looks like he could cast a spell at any second. Torvin remains passive, but he clearly looks disappointed at this turn of events. The elf High Priest has remained seated, but the look on his face shows that he is quite prepared to defend himself should the need arise. Beyond all of this though, every person present feels as though they are being watched by something more. It is quite unnerving and does not fade.

GM Notes: Would anyone like to go to combat resolution? Assuming no, the following will happen -

The Queen, who has apparently not left her seat this whole time, says softly to Sir Rovach, “Put away your steel, my good paladin. I would hate to have you tending your wounds in one of our prisons.”

She next looks to her half-brother Tamberlaine, Rollester and the innkeeper. “Please remove her before she says something else foolish and we have to remove her tongue as well,” indicating Stephanie.

“Now you can leave by actual sword point, Stephanie,” the Queen says as the warrior woman is either led or dragged out of the sight of all present.

Sir Rovach
She will turn her eyes towards Sir Rovach, tears forming on them. "I wouldn't advise it, but you are on your own path. Clearly Stephanie is not in her right mind and you only mean to put her down like a rabid animal..." Whatever more she was going to say is caught in her throat and she turns away from the coming scene of blood and death.
Eye's focused upon Stephanie, Sir Rovach hears Lady Aesa's words said to him. He tries to put all his concentration into Stephanie, letting nothing distract him. He needs his entire focus now at this time so he is ready to meet his opponent in this duel of honor.

But...there seems to be something in Lady Aesa's voice. Something strange. He glances over at her briefly, wondering what it is that he heard. It is at this time he see's tears in her eye's as she continues to speak to him. What is this? he wonders? Is she starting to cry? He turns his attention back to Stephanie, hoping this distraction wouldn't be enough to draw his attention away from Stephanie.

Once again, he tries to focus his all upon Stephanie but cant get the nagging feeling out of his head of Lady Aesa with tears in her eyes. Was she upset about the way her friend was acting? Are they even that close of friends? He could understand that. Or was she upset by how he stood up to Stephanie? That seems to be the answer to him. But doesn't Lady Aesa understand what is happening here? To stand and do nothing when someone accuses him or a friend of wrongdoing would be the same as acknowledging that they are right. To stand aside while a friend is struck at would be to accept that such action is not only acceptable, but that I would not stand up to stop such violence to my friends or to other innocents. Doesn't she understand?

Yet Sir Rovach still can't get over feeling two inches tall at this moment. He is fullfilling the requirements of honor and helping his friend, but why does he feel bad about it? Did I make her cry? he asks himself shamefully. He never had any intention to bring tears to Lady Aesa's eyes...

Hesitating for just a moment, he lets out a small breath that releases some tension within him. He wonders if he should accept the dishonor Stephanie has leveled against him and the others in order to comfort Lady Aesa, or not? He does know he will not allow Stephanie to harm anyone else here.

But the choice is soon taken out of his hands.
The Queen says one word, a name actually, “Rollester!”

In the blink of an eye, Sir Rovach's entire world is swallowed up in darkness. He can hear the words being spoken by the Queen, but is unable to pinpoint where her voice is coming from or where everyone is. Regreting taking no interest in the lessons offered by the order in blind fighting, he remains perfectly still during the next few moments while the Queen has her just say on the matter occuring here.
The darkness fades and suddenly the characters find themselves intermingled with the council members...
Fury the bear and Thyra have interjected themselves in front of Sir Rovach.
Eventually the darkness goes away and Sir Rovach finds he can see again...with the Ranger and her bear right in front of him! He then nods his head to the Ranger and slowly lowers his blade, knowing that the Queen and here company will tolerate no more foolishness from Stephanie.
GM Notes: Would anyone like to go to combat resolution? Assuming no, the following will happen:
ooc: Nope, not at all! :-)
The Queen, who has apparently not left her seat this whole time, says softly to Sir Rovach, “Put away your steel, my good paladin. I would hate to have you tending your wounds in one of our prisons.”
"As you wish, your Majesty." he replies to the Queen, return his blade to his scabbard. He will then relax, watching Stephanie as she is led out of the room by the Captain, still placing himself between her and Lady Erizhetiana. And somehow still feeling ashamed and unable to look Lady Aesa in the eye. Though he can't understand why, for he acted with honor and to help his friend.

Kaelyn
The one known as Stephanie begins to go on a tirade about himself and his companions. Within a few short moments the queen herself is insult causing her companions to rise up out of their chairs. Turning toward the warrior all he says is, “I was a thief.” ‘Powerful enemies I may have but it appears you made one larger then I.’ he thinks to himself as the others begin drawing steel causing the situation to become grave as the queen calls for Rollester and everything goes dark.
The urge to ask, Can we be civil? Comes across his mind but then he thinks better of saying it, given the eerie feeling he has that something is watching them.
As the darkness disapates, Kaelyn looks about seeing the counsel members in between the other members attempting to keep the peace.
“Please do not be so quick to judge us, your majesty. We may yet surprise you.” He says evenly though not very loudly, for he knows the queens temper is being pushed by that of the others.

Redjak isn’t entirely sure what is going on here. The Queen of Maletar is about to reveal more about the organization most have agreed to join when one of the local heroines lashes out at her own queen! This is unheard of, Redjak thinks. So far Queen Aerowyn has been nothing but gracious and extending a lot of trust and incredible rewards.

Then this Stephanie woman turns on her companions. She lashes out at every one of them. Soon a fist flies almost as fast as the scathing words and it looks as though a barroom brawl between drunken sailors is about to be loosed. Redjak looks incredulously at Lady Zarya and stands himself to shield her from this insanity.

The Guild Master Rollester drops magical darkness on everyone on the queen’s command and she regains control of the chaos. When everyone can see again, these ‘heroes’ are surrounded by the queen’s loyal subjects and fellow rulers. They look to be challenging these immature rowdies to continue the nonsense. Thankfully they don’t, but Redjak can’t shake the feeling something else is observing all of this and whatever it may be feels quite displeased.

The queen banishes Stephanie from her kingdom, and Redjak believes she escaped with a light sentence. Of course, she will have to live all of her days knowing that fact, so it might indeed be a more fitting punishment. It is hard to believe that she will relish in being dispossessed, but it is not my concern, Redjak thinks.

He looks to Lady Zarya to insure she is not harmed except for maybe being shaken up by all that transpired. Redjak mouths a few questioning words to her and watches for her reply. He is now uncertain whether it would be wise to throw their lot in with this dysfunctional group.
For our family, our people, our kingdom, we will prevail!

Erizhetiana Iltani of Lotan -

(Just going to jump to the end. There are moments to fill in some RP as the back-filled events happen, but may be more confusing than it is worth.)

Erizhi remains on the floor, still smarting from the blind-sided cowardly attack that the amazon surprised her with. Erizhi issues a blood oath to her foe, but imagines that she will not understand the meaning of the word. A moment later, Rovach steps in between them and issues his own challenge to Stephanie. It seems as if bloodshed is about to commence, when the Queen thankfully intervenes.

After a few moments, including a handy blackness spell and the interspersion of the Queen's entourage, the escalation has been calmed. Stephanie is exiled and sent away. Erizhi cannot even manage a smile at that. Dareos is soon nearby and offers her a hand up. She will accept it and then again check to see if the blood flow from her nose has finally stopped. An uneasy presence has been present for some time now, and Erizhi cannot place where it is coming from. Something unseen has its focus upon them all. Erizhi looks about warily.

Everyone is visibly upset about these developments. Rovach seems to be bothered by the encounter. Aesa seemed to be visibly moved by the conflict. The nobles from the Greyson Isles look understandably nervous. The Queen herself began to express doubts about her choice, and likely several of her advisors were not happy with this situation from the beginning judging from their demeanors.

Satisfied that her bleeding has stopped and the pain has somewhat subsided, Erizhi steps over to Kaelyn and places her hand on his shoulder. He was brave enough to admit his past transgressions and seeks to redeem himself. The other two pairs of nobles notwithstanding, Erizhi is somewhat confident in the remaining group members that remain. She will turn her attention, respectfully, to the Queen again.

Your Majesty," she will say with a formal curtsey, "again my companions and I apologize for the behavior of that person. From her words, you can clearly see that she was not one of us. The four of us," she indicates herself and her three remaining companions with a sweep of her arm, "are honorable people. All with a reason to be here. I would be most disheartened to witness the mutual benefit of your proposed offer fail to come to fruition. Regretably, this was all quite unseemly." She will bow again slightly and return to stand behind the chair she had occupied, awaiting the command of the Queen to either sit and resume their discussion or to be sent away from her presence.

Aesa:

Aesa does not see Sir Rovach's internal conflict as she has turned her back to the whole display. Her ears wait for the dreaded sound of Stephanie's sword slipping its scabbard, but the sound never comes. Instead there is a name called out and then darkness. Aesa freezes, her infravision useless as well. What powerful magic is this? she questions fearfully.

The queen's coterie is among her companions when the darkness is suddenly gone. Rollester is quite the mage it would seem. The queen's order is of no surprise. Aesa is just glad that Stehpanie will not be killed for her transgressions here.
“Now you can leave by actual sword point, Stephanie,” the Queen says as the warrior woman is either led or dragged out of the sight of all present.
Aesa wipes her tears as Stephanie is led out. She didn't know the woman enough to have such emotion well up inside her and burst forth, but something about Stephanie just caused Aesa to look upon her as a kindred soul. Maybe because she was another powerful warrior woman or something else entirely. Clearly her mind is deeply troubled and so Aesa couldn't allow Sir Rovach to just cut her down, but Aesa found herself doubting her own conviction there at the end. For all her healing knowledge, skill and magic, the infliction and infection of the mind is quite near impossible to help.

"Goodbye, Stephanie," Aesa whispers, knowing none other will hear her, and especially not Stephanie herself. "May the Wilds protect you on your new path." Recomposing herself, Aesa turns back to see what the queen may now have in store for the lot of them.
That which must be done will be done.
