New Frontiers #100

The Guardians are in Ansimont on their way to Elcadan. This generally peaceful farming town seems to have more than its fair share of secrets. Lyonessa has encountered Phelan, a man who claims to be involved with her sister Myveria, who has gone missing. Sherra approached a cloaked, watching figure to learn that it was Jacob Deville, a feline-looking follower of Eldath. Jacob claims that Ansimont is a trap for mages as they disappeared here over the years. Putting things together, it is deduced that this is what must have happened to Myveria.
Lyonessa wrote:"Please don't worry yourself on that," Lyonessa says, smiling at the squire reassuringly. "He was holding back and it worked. I just didn't want you to push him too far was all. Thank you for your assistance."
“It was my pleasure, milady. Should you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.”
Lyonessa wrote:"Was my sister practicing any magic during your time here?" she asks Phelan. If she wasn't then Lyonessa can't imagine just how her sister would have been abducted.
“I don’t recall her casting any spells in public,” Phelan answers after a few moments of thought. “I don’t think that she made a secret of her talents either.”
Chareos wrote:Chareos will nod as he sees Lyonessa return, "Greetings. Where were you staying?" he asks curiously of Phelan.
“Our room was that the Golden Harvest,” Phelan answers. It’s an average quality inn.

The squires arrange lodging for the group while the cavalrymen set up camp in the campgrounds typically used by caravans while passing through Ansimont. Lodging is acquired at the Amber Waves Inn and the squires make it clear just who the rooms are for. One large common room is rented, along with a second room that is not as large as the first. The Innkeeper remembers most of you from your earlier stay here while on your way to Rennydale. He asks if Lyonessa would perform once more as it was very much enjoyed before.

Dining in a small hall off the main tavern room is arranged. Once the food is served, Ivy casts Purify Food and Drink on the fare removing any toxins and poisons that might exist. During the meal, Sir Acerion will determine that there is no evil in Phelan. Chareos will get the same result when he surreptitiously casts Detect Evil. No one in the inn seems to be paying the group any overt attention outside of the ordinary.

After the meal, the group splits up on a variety of tasks. Night has already fallen, as the days are getting shorter and shorter. Baron Validar, Sir Corley, and Regnak mount up and ride back out to the Ansimont Farm to speak with Charles. Sherra slips away into the night to gather more intelligence.

Most everyone else retires to their rooms. Once inside their room, Argent casts Teleport, taking herself, Duchess Lysandra and Lady Gabriella to the Salavarian Estate outside of Elcadan. Sir Acerion and Sir Belfor stand guard over the Duke in their larger chamber along with many of the squires and anyone else who wishes to be there.

In the other room Lyonessa chats with Phelan some more.
Lyonessa wrote:If things 'check out' with Phelan (like having Acerion check for evil) then Lyonessa will spend some time later talking with Phelan. "So where have the two of you been?" she'll ask. "Is there anyone who might wish the two of you harm? Any enemies or things like that?"
“I can’t think of anyone who would be out to get us,” Phelan answers. We really haven’t made any enemies on our few adventures. We started out heading for the ruins of Demara’s castle. We had heard that a band of adventurers had found success there a few weeks earlier. Myveria was greatly interested in seeing if anything could be found there, as Demara was known to be a powerful enchantress. Rumors had it that this other adventuring party returned with much gold and magical garments. Alas, they had picked the ruins clean and we found very little for our troubles.”

“From there we decided to explore Ardelphia a bit further to the north. We’ve all heard the tales of how the riches of the former nobles were still buried there, just waiting to be taken. We never made it when our camp was ambushed outside of Rennydale. The rest you know.”

Outside of town Baron Validar’s group arrives at the Ansimont Farm. No one is noticed outside and you knock on the door. A servant answers and he explains that Charles has gone into town for the evening. He doesn’t know when he’ll be back.

On the way back to town and about a mile before reaching Ansimont, the riders note a campfire along side of the road. As they get closer, a lone-cloaked figure is seen warming himself before the fire. As you get closer, you realize that this figure matches the description of Jacob given to you by Sherra!

Once in speaking range the figure calls out. “Come friends, warm yourself by the fire. There is a strong chill in the wind tonight.”

GM Notes:

Welcome to the 100th post for New Frontiers, although there has been many more updates than that.

Here’s where I have everyone at the moment.

Outside of town – Baron Validar, Sir Corley, and Regnak.

Exploring in town – Sherra

In the Duke’s room – Sir Acerion, Sir Belfor, and the Squires.

In the other room – Lyonessa and Phelan.

Argent, Lady Gabriella, and Duchess Lysandra are now at Jallarzi’s Estate in Elcadan.

I’ll need to know where anyone not listed is.

Now what?

Sherra:
After the meal, the group splits up on a variety of tasks. Night has already fallen, as the days are getting shorter and shorter. Baron Validar, Sir Corley, and Regnak mount up and ride back out to the Ansimont Farm to speak with Charles. Sherra slips away into the night to gather more intelligence.
Sherra slips easily out into the night, taking a route to avoid anyone who might be keeping an eye on their rooms to hopefully still believe she is inside. Of course, there might not actually be anyone spying on them, but why take the chance?

Sherra will make her away about the town. She's going to pay particular attention to any non-residential buildings, looking for concealed doors or passages along the outer walls. She'll also keep an eye out for anyone who probably shouldn't be out this late. There didn't seem to be much in the way of guards, so she shouldn't have to avoid many patrols.

Sir Acerion:

Dining in a small hall off the main tavern room is arranged. Once the food is served, Ivy casts Purify Food and Drink on the fare removing any toxins and poisons that might exist. During the meal, Sir Acerion will determine that there is no evil in Phelan. Chareos will get the same result when he surreptitiously casts Detect Evil. No one in the inn seems to be paying the group any overt attention outside of the ordinary.

Acerion enjoys the meal with his beloved Ivy as best he can given the circumstances. Knowing that she had to purify the food just to be safe unsettles the paladin a bit. He concentrates on Phelan during part of the dinner when everyone else has his attention. Noting no evil from the man, Acerion silently signals the findings to Validar.

As the others head off for different missions, Acerion prepares to take his post near the Duke. Hopefully the night will be a quiet one, but he will not be taking any chances.

Ivy:
Baron Validar wrote:“Not to worry. Even if he were a confirmed priest of Eldath, it does not mean he is working to help us. Peace has many meanings to many people and eliminating us could result in more peace than what is to come if we continue our plans. He could be on our side or not.”
“I find that line of reasoning hard to believe,” Ivy speaks up. “There is a loose hierarchy among the gods. Eldath is firmly among the gods of good and her superiors would be noble Heironeous, Helm the Protector, and Mortidus the Wise. Should we fail then the demons will run rampant. I cannot see how throwing this entire region into chaos can lead to peace.”
Baron Validar wrote:"In any case, we will proceed as though he is a potential threat to us." Validar notices that Lyonessa, as well as Sir Corley's squire and Po, have rejoined them. "You look like to have some news," Validar states, seeing the look on Lyonessa's face.
“That is probably wise at this point,” Ivy is forced to agree.
Baron Validar wrote:"The question I have is about this law against mages in the first place. If it truly is a pretense, then is Charles working for these people, either intentionally or inadvertently? Otherwise, how is it established and kept in place. This is too odd."
“There are many ways to control others, as we’ve seen thus far,” Ivy speaks up. “Charles could simply be Charmed by someone and carrying out their wishes. I am familiar with this spell and it makes those under it look favorably on the being who cast it. But they won’t do anything contrary to their nature, or the Charm will break.”

After a pause Ivy adds, “That could explain the laws against mages here. A mage would be able to remove such a Charm. Of course, so should most priests, but they don’ t seem to be outlawed here. Most puzzling.”

When there is time, Ivy will bring Sir Acerion up to date in hushed whispers while they guard the Duke. Later, Ivy will Purify the meal before eating. To any outsider, she’ll claim that she’s just blessing the meal.

Ivy will settle in with Sir Acerion to help stand guard over the Duke while Baron Validar and the others are away. Company will make the task go faster. Once it’s clear that the men are ready to retire, Ivy will excuse herself and go to the women’s room.
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

Baron Validar -

“Not to worry.

"That is because you are thinking in terms of the god's alignments, not in the individual's actions. It seems to me that individuals still have their own motivations regardless of the plans of the gods themselves."

"Also you are operating from your perspective. So far things have been calm and one could argue that the demons have been here for a long time, so we are just instigating things and causing the problems. While I do not agree with that perspective, it is not hard to imagine someone thinking as such. Regardless, trying to determine an unknown individual's motivations is not the point of this discussion. I simply made the point that he could be attempting to stop us whether a priest of Eldath or not. Whether one follows a king or a god or a captain, they still have their own desires and ideas, whether true or false, misguided or not."

With things becoming settled in Ansimont for the evening and the group preparing for possible trouble, after the meal, purified by Ivy, Validar says his goodbyes to Lady Gabriella as well as Argent and his mother, the Duchess Lysandra. They are teleporting to Jallarzi's Estate near Elcadan and the group here will catch up with them soon.

Validar heads to see Charles Ansimont again with the scout Regnak and Sir Corley accompanying him. At the farm, the trio is told that Charles has gone to town, so they return as well.

Validar signals the others to stop and they ride up to the figure by the fire. "There is a chill in the air tonight indeed." Validar dismounts and leads his riding horse closer to the fire. "I am Validar, Baron of Pyris, but likely you already know that. This is Sir Corley and the scout, Regnak."

"You had some words with one of our number, Sherra, earlier. Are you here now to watch the results of what is to come?"

If Jacob is open to questioning and non-hostile, Validar will ask several other questions:

"How long have you been in the area and what else do you know about what is going on here?"

"Which Devilles are in charge in this area?"

"Who is responsible for causing the mischief with the mages?"

"Why are priests not included in this plot?"

"Is Charles involved in the plot here, whittingly or unwittingly?"

"What other allies do the Devilles have and what other surprises can we expect them to try?"

"Why is Jacob willing to work against his family?"

Validar will also tell Jacob that the King has placed a bounty on the head of all Devilles. If he is truthful and not an enemy, then Validar will let it be known to the King. Otherwise, he is to be considered an enemy.

Chareos

Chareos will make sure to see Argent and the nobility off safely. Once in doing so Chareos will make his rounds about the men’s room, then past Lyonessa‘s room, growing anxious Chareos will make his way to the Duke’s location.

“Good evening, Sir Acerion, thought perhaps you would might like some company during your watch.”

Chareos will stand guard with the duke, though say once an hour during his watch, will get up and stretch his legs, making a round about the inn, looking for signs of trouble.

Regnak
Outside of town Baron Validar’s group arrives at the Ansimont Farm. No one is noticed outside and you knock on the door. A servant answers and he explains that Charles has gone into town for the evening. He doesn’t know when he’ll be back.

Validar heads to see Charles Ansimont again with the scout Regnak and Sir Corley accompanying him. At the farm, the trio is told that Charles has gone to town, so they return as well.

Regnak follows the knights through the drawing night to the out laying farm of Ansimont. As they await word of Charles it is soon learned that the man of the house has left for the evening. “Might you know where he travels this night?” he asks curiously. Afterward Rek will look for signs of recent passage.

Rek cautiously watches as Validar moves forward, Odd place for a priest on night such as this? He thinks to himself as he moves forward behind Validar. Rek will try and take note of if there are any other foot prints leading away or from the camp sight.

Nodding his head to the priest, he bids him welcome but says little, though he is greatly curious. Looking at the fire that is burning, Rek will try and see how long the priest was here. (Any other roads leading in to the town besides this one that Charles may have taken? Local Knowledge.) if it seems logical to ask from the above,

“Has Elder Anismont come this way?”
Seek and you shall find answers.

Post Continued:

The Guardians are split up dealing with a variety of tasks in Ansimont. Sherra has ducked out into the night to scout around. The streets are mostly deserted by now. Ansimont is not a town noted for its nightlife! Most folks have gone home for the evening or are in one of the local taverns and inns. Other than the taverns and inns, most every other business has closed for the evening. Sticking to the shadows, Sherra moves through the town completely unnoticed.

Sherra notices a familiar face as she scouts. It’s one of the serving wenches from the Amber Waves! She’s walking through the town towards the warehouse district. This area is outside the dwarven part of town. Here there are numerous warehouses, but most are dark right now.

The serving wench makes her way to one called the DeVir Trading Company. She enters through a man door and is lost from sight. Sherra reaches the building and can hear faint voices from inside.

“It is done,” a woman’s voice says.

“You’ve done well,” a man’s voice responds. “Here is your reward. Now go.”

From the sound of it a small sack changed hands. The woman’s footsteps draw closer to the door. Sherra moves off so as to not be spotted. The serving wench exits and walks away from the warehouse without looking back. Sherra returns to the door and catches a few more words by the man.

“Round the men up. We move at midnight once everyone is asleep. The master will be pleased with this catch.”

More footsteps are now heard moving towards the door…

Out at the Ansimont Family farm, Baron Validar, Sir Corley, and Regnak learn that Charles Ansimont has gone into town.
Regnak wrote:Regnak follows the knights through the drawing night to the out laying farm of Ansimont. As they await word of Charles it is soon learned that the man of the house has left for the evening. “Might you know where he travels this night?” he asks curiously. Afterward Rek will look for signs of recent passage.
“Presumably to meet up with friends to share stories and ale,” the servant answers plainly.

The riders took the main road out of town, to the south of Ansimont. This is the road that leads to Elcadan in the south. A few miles out of town, a side road leads to the Ansimont farm. There is a lesser-used trail that connects the farm to the town directly. It’s a single file path that was unsuitable for the larger procession that came here earlier. The trail is faster for a single or small group of riders.

Back in down, the new Duke seems very relaxed and talkative. Much like Validar is now, Duke Relon was an adventurer in his younger days. While not currently in peak fighting condition, he’s still a good swordsman.

“It seems that we haven’t had much time to chat over these last few days. I usually try to make a point to get to know those around me. I know much about each of your from your reputations, but very little personally. As I understand it, only Sir Acerion here is of noble birth. The rest of you were granted titles from the King. Since so much is in flux these days, there are many opportunities for those nobles who wish to make things better for all. Where would you like to see yourselves in the years to come? Ruling in some capacity or taking a more private approach to life?”

There’s been no sign of trouble thus far at the Amber Waves Inn.

On their way back to town, taking the quicker trail, Baron Validar, Sir Corley and Regnak come across Jacob Deville sitting before a campfire about a mile outside of town. Regnak tries to see if there are any other tracks in the area, but it’s difficult given the poor lighting. There doesn’t seem to be any other tracks around. The campfire doesn’t seem to have been going very long. There’s not a lot of ash in the fire yet.

Jacob greets you and asks that you join him by the fire for warmth.
Validar wrote:Validar signals the others to stop and they ride up to the figure by the fire.

“May peace be with you, Validar, Baron of Pyris, Sir Corley, and scout Regnak,” Jacob says as you approach. “I am merely setting up camp for the night. I find it more tranquil out here in the wilds than in town and I am sure you know why if your friend has spoken to you.”
Validar wrote:"How long have you been in the area and what else do you know about what is going on here?"
“Only a few days,” Jacob answers. “Beyond what I told your friend, I know very little else. Mostly just rumors I overhear and stories from fellow travelers.”
Validar wrote:"Which Devilles are in charge in this area?"
“I would assume that Josetta remains the head of any above ground conspiracies. The last I knew none of my siblings were in Ansimont. They find it to be a dull and boring place.”
Validar wrote:"Who is responsible for causing the mischief with the mages?"
“I would assume it to be my mother, Josetta, or at least those working for her.”
Validar wrote:"Why are priests not included in this plot?"

“I do not know. The only reason that makes sense is that is that they require what mages have more than any other person: High intelligence.”
Validar wrote:"Is Charles involved in the plot here, wittingly or unwittingly?"

“I do not know. From what I’ve been told, Charles is a pleasant enough fellow. If he’s involved in anything underhanded like this, then it’s most likely against his will.”
Validar wrote:"What other allies do the Devilles have and what other surprises can we expect them to try?"
“I’ve never really been involved in the family affairs in the past,” Jacob answers. “I was the champion of the arena in Akorros, battling whatever foe they placed in front of me. Sometimes it was to eliminate an annoyance to my mother or one of her sisters. I didn’t venture very far from Akorros, but they did bring many guests to the arena: Hextorites, drow, and other fell races. My aunt Abigail spins her plots in the Underdark, so seeing drow wasn’t uncommon. Assume any plot has roots to them.”
Validar wrote:"Why is Jacob willing to work against his family?"
“Because I grew tired of all the mindless killing and maiming. I have more blood on my hands than you can imagine and it began to sicken me. That is when I left. There was something missing in my life, but I could not comprehend what. I traveled for a time and met a Priest of Eldath. He told me of the Eldath faith and it filled the void in my life. It gave me new purpose and a peace that I had never known before. I suppose, that I returned, naively, to see if I could get some of my siblings to repent their evil ways. That was when I arrived in Ansimont a few days ago.”
Validar will also tell Jacob that the King has placed a bounty on the head of all Devilles. If he is truthful and not an enemy, then Validar will let it be known to the King. Otherwise, he is to be considered an enemy.
“Your king is most wise,” Jacob states. “I am a murderer many times over and am thus as guilty as anyone else in my family of crimes against the Crown. If it is your desire to slay me, then you may do so. I will not fight you. My days of battle are over.”
Regnak wrote:“Has Elder Ansimont come this way?”
“I have not seen him, but I have not been here long.”

Baron Validar -

Jacob greets you and asks that you join him by the fire for warmth.

The trio comes closer and Validar dismounts to better speak with the 'man'.

“May peace be with you, Validar, Baron of Pyris, Sir Corley, and scout Regnak,” Jacob says as you approach. “I am merely setting up camp for the night. I find it more tranquil out here in the wilds than in town and I am sure you know why if your friend has spoken to you.”

"Indeed," Validar responds. "There does seem to be an air of trouble about this evening."

"Which Devilles are in charge in this area?"

“I would assume that Josetta remains the head of any above ground conspiracies. The last I knew none of my siblings were in Ansimont. They find it to be a dull and boring place.”

"So the ones behind this scheme here in Ansimont are simply working for Josetta or someone below her." Validar looks to Corley for a moment. "That is unfortunate," he says simply, not wishing to share unnecessary information with Jacob, just in case.

"Why are priests not included in this plot?"

“I do not know. The only reason that makes sense is that is that they require what mages have more than any other person: High intelligence.”

Validar frowns at those words. "I see." Magick is a strange thing and this answer does not do anything to clear things up.

"Is Charles involved in the plot here, wittingly or unwittingly?"

“I do not know. From what I’ve been told, Charles is a pleasant enough fellow. If he’s involved in anything underhanded like this, then it’s most likely against his will.”

"That is good to know. It seems as though at this point, everything is simply speculation."

"What other allies do the Devilles have and what other surprises can we expect them to try?"

"Yes, we have seen that to be the case. The drow have been involved in various parts of the plots we have experiened." Validar starts to think about the connections between the drow, the Hextorites, even the orc horde and Ember the dragon and wonders if all of this is somehow connected to an even greater evil enemy. "This conspiracy may go quite far indeed."

"Why is Jacob willing to work against his family?"

"True repentance is a rare thing, I believe, Jacob. I would be surprised if you were successful in dealing with any of your siblings. As you are not one to enter conflict now, you may be better off leaving this place entirely, so as to not fall sway to the temptations that association with your past may create. At least until the Devilles have been utterly defeated that is."

Validar looks towards Corley again, but doesn't say anything at first. "Even though it comes from your own lips, your supposed crimes amount to nothing more than hearsay. As Baron of Pyris and a knight of the Crown, I am able to mete out justice where it is due, but I cannot say that is the case here, despite your admissions. If you were to cross us, you will pay the consequences. If all you say is true, then your life is your own to lead."

“Has Elder Ansimont come this way?”

“I have not seen him, but I have not been here long.”

"Very well," Validar answers. "We will leave you to your tranquility. We seem to have our own concerns for this evening." Validar will mount up again, then address Jacob one last time. "You really should leave this place. Make the break that you have created for yourself and take advantage of it. There is only strife to come here in these lands until the Deville are no more, Jacob of Eldath," Validar says making a point to not refer to Jacob as a Deville. It dawns on the baron for a moment that the name Jacob means 'one who undermines or causes mischief', but Validar smiles to himself at the irony and rides off.

Validar will return to the inn where the rooms are rented. He will mill about for a time in the common room, but not take any more food or drink, then head up to the rooms to see how everyne has fared this evening so far.

Argent:

Argent enjoys the carriage ride back into town. After a time, the carriage is led up to an Inn and we are shown inside. Guards escort us inside and into a private room. Argent finds herself enjoying this kind of treatment more and more.

During the evening meal, Argent will sit close to Chareos so that they can chat and say their goodbyes.

“I’ll see you in a day or two.” Argent says and then kisses Chareos goodbye.

Once up in the private room, Argent will instruct the Duchess and Lady Gabriella to hold on to her.

“I know that Jallarzi does this all the time, but I’m still new to the spell. But I am very familiar with the arrival area at the Sallavarian Estate. Here we go!”

With that, Argent teleports away.

Sir Corley:

Sir Corley doesn’t have anything to really add to the conversation thus far. This Jacob DeVille doesn’t seem to be concealing information, but the young knight really can’t be sure if he is as honest as he appears. But there is a truth to the man’s words. Peace sounds like a wonderful thing, but unfortunately these are not peaceful times we live in.
Baron Validar wrote:"So the ones behind this scheme here in Ansimont are simply working for Josetta or someone below her." Validar looks to Corley for a moment. "That is unfortunate," he says simply, not wishing to share unnecessary information with Jacob, just in case.
“Most likely the mage capturing organization hinted at before. At least we won’t be battle demons this time.”

Mounting up once more, Sir Corley urges his mount back towards town and whatever danger awaits us.

If this Jacob really believed this, then she would not let him possess her holy symbol. While a nobleman might conceal his true intentions from a king, you cannot hide your beliefs and feelings from your chosen god.”

Later that evening, Ivy is sitting and talking with Sir Acerion up in the main common room. Duke Relon seems in good spirits tonight and chats with all.

"I understand your point," Validar says, trying to be patient. "You are saying that in an ideal situation that we should expect someone who is a follower of a good god to have motivations at least mostly aligned with ours, as we are attempting to do good."

"However, this is not a general circumstance. This is a very particular situation. One where we do not know all the circumstances. Is it possible that we will be faced with an opponent who follows a good god in the future? Is it possible that a good god might have different motivations than another? Is it possible that we could see actions that work towards the god's idea of a greater good that are counter-productive to our own?"

"I think it is a bit self-aggrandizing to assume that everything we do will be 'blessed by the gods'. My point, is that we do not know the specific situation and generalizing is helpful in certain instances, but is not a strong enough reason to make assumptions that could result in something terrible happening."

"We do not know if this Jacob is a true follower of Eldath, if that holy symbol is real or some misbegotten facsimile. We do not know if he was a follower or a priest and as a follower could easily have different motivations from what you say. And a crazy person can be just as dangerous as a sane one."

"I understand that Eldath is good and her followers should act in a good manner. Those is not sufficient facts to conclude that he is not working against us. Take the situation with Kharyna, for instance, and her work against the Cold Maiden. That is my entire point. "

"So the ones behind this scheme here in Ansimont are simply working for Josetta or someone below her." Validar looks to Corley for a moment. "That is unfortunate," he says simply, not wishing to share unnecessary information with Jacob, just in case.

“Most likely the mage capturing organization hinted at before. At least we won’t be battle demons this time.”

"Perhaps not. At least not in this particular instance. Regardless of the foe, we shall be triumphant."

Lyonessa:

“I can’t think of anyone who would be out to get us,” Phelan answers. We really haven’t made any enemies on our few adventures. We started out heading for the ruins of Demara’s castle. We had heard that a band of adventurers had found success there a few weeks earlier. Myveria was greatly interested in seeing if anything could be found there, as Demara was known to be a powerful enchantress. Rumors had it that this other adventuring party returned with much gold and magical garments. Alas, they had picked the ruins clean and we found very little for our troubles.”

Lyonessa listens with interest at Phelan's continued tale. "So that's where she went off to," she says smiling. "It sounds like an interesting adventure even though you didn't have much to show for it."

“From there we decided to explore Ardelphia a bit further to the north. We’ve all heard the tales of how the riches of the former nobles were still buried there, just waiting to be taken. We never made it when our camp was ambushed outside of Rennydale. The rest you know.”

It doesn't really sound as though her sister made any enemies, unlike herself Lyonessa reflects. It would seem she was just an unfortunate victim here. Still, she wonders just how her sister was caught, unless they detected the presence of a mage somehow upon arrival. A thought that Lyonessa will ask some of the others.

She will find Chareos, guessing that Argent has already gone. "I have a question Chareos," she will ask of him. "do you think maybe there is a detection spell, ward or something that might be in place that would alert whoever is behind these mage disappearances? Would there be some way we could locate it ourselves, like a Detect Magic? Of course, casting a spell ourselves would likely tip us off."

Sherra:
“It is done,” a woman’s voice says.

“You’ve done well,” a man’s voice responds. “Here is your reward. Now go.”

From the sound of it a small sack changed hands. The woman’s footsteps draw closer to the door. Sherra moves off so as to not be spotted. The serving wench exits and walks away from the warehouse without looking back. Sherra returns to the door and catches a few more words by the man.

“Round the men up. We move at midnight once everyone is asleep. The master will be pleased with this catch.”
Sold out, Sherra thinks. She slips quietly back into the deepest shadows and lingers a moment to see if she can catch a glimpse of who else might be exiting. She will not risk getting caught herself though, ready to break line of sight should the unknown people possess infravision and look her way.

Whether or not she gets any more visual information, Sherra will move back towards the inn ahead of their abducters to bring everyone to alert.

Sir Acerion:

“Good evening, Sir Acerion, thought perhaps you would might like some company during your watch.”

"A good evening to you," Acerion replies with a nod of his head. "Company is always welcome."

“It seems that we haven’t had much time to chat over these last few days. I usually try to make a point to get to know those around me. I know much about each of your from your reputations, but very little personally. As I understand it, only Sir Acerion here is of noble birth. The rest of you were granted titles from the King. “I have to admit my thoughts have gone towards the future these last few weeks. Sir Acerion and I are betrothed, Your Grace. So I would envision us living in his ancestral home once Ardelphia has been reclaimed. With perhaps a few children of our own.”

Acerion smiles at Ivy's words in response to the Duke's inquiry. He has often thought about such possibilties and although they are somewhere in the elusive future, it always warms him to hear his lovely lady express such similar thoughts.

"Yes, Your Grace, I would love to rule over my families' holdings once we reclaim the entire region, but would not be adverse to the possibility of obtaining additional lands that may come through further expansion of the realm," Acerion reveals. "I can not say to what ends a decision will be made by our king, but I will be honored to serve in whatever capacity, minor or major, that is offered to me at the appropriate time."

Outside of town, Baron Validar, Sir Corley, and the scout Regnak are speaking with Jacob Deville at his campsite.
Baron Validar wrote:"True repentance is a rare thing, I believe, Jacob. I would be surprised if you were successful in dealing with any of your siblings. As you are not one to enter conflict now, you may be better off leaving this place entirely, so as to not fall sway to the temptations that association with your past may create. At least until the Devilles have been utterly defeated that is."
“I do not hold out high hopes for success,” Jacob easily answers. “But I must try. I do not fear for myself among my kin. My reputation as a warrior of the arena will make most think twice of attacking me. As for temptation, it is always there; ready to rise up when least expected. If I am worthy of Eldath, then I shall defeat that particular foe.”
Baron Validar wrote:Validar looks towards Corley again, but doesn't say anything at first.
Jacob bows his head in response. “You are wise beyond your years, Baron. I will pay for my deeds eventually. My place in the afterlife has already been secured. Nothing can change that.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Very well," Validar answers. "We will leave you to your tranquility. We seem to have our own concerns for this evening." Validar will mount up again, and then address Jacob one last time.
“I thank you for your advice, Baron, but I cannot leave no more than you cannot seek to defeat my family. I must at least make the attempt otherwise I would be less than a man.”

“But before you leave, there are some things that I do know about my kin that may aid you in your quest. Do not underestimate my mother and her sisters. They are not human in the way that you and even I are. They have innate abilities unknown to us. They can assume any female form as easily as one changes clothing. They can comprehend any spoken language and can speak back in kind. They do not need to eat or sleep as we do. They can travel from one place to another with just a thought.”

“They fear very little and regard mortals are little more than toys to be played with and destroyed when they grow tired of them. But there is one thing that they do fear. It is only spoken of in whispers, but they did imprison something that they feared within Castle Elcadan. Just what this is, I do not know.”

“My Aunt Thelma has holdings in Akorros and this is where she performs her experiments on both the living and the dead. Those sent to her laboratories meet a horrific fate.”

“There are many thugs and slavers in the service of my family. Some of these slavers travel the world in their flying ships bringing back many unusual humans. Humans with copper colored skin, yellow, and even skin as dark as night. They speak in unknown tongues and are assigned many tasks, ranging from fighting in the arena, serving other members of the family, taken into the Underdark by the drow and probably many more jobs.”

“Akorros is the main city for the Deville Family. The combat arena is there where men and monsters battle to the death for the amusement of the crowd. Many of the family have villas there. Not everyone is a threat. Think of my siblings as mostly spoiled children, too lost in their petty amusements to be much of a threat.”

“I bid you good fortune on your mission.”

Back in Ansimont, Sherra has overheard that men will be coming to abduct the Duke and the group’s mages around midnight. Normal looking men slip out of the DeVir Trading Company warehouse. They separate and spread out back into the town. Sherra makes it back to the Amber Waves Inn easily and long before the midnight hour. She shares what she’s overheard with those present.

And at the Amber Waves Inn, some of the group converse with Duke Relon.
Ivy wrote:“I have to admit my thoughts have gone towards the future these last few weeks. Sir Acerion and I are betrothed, Your Grace. So I would envision us living in his ancestral home once Ardelphia has been reclaimed. With perhaps a few children of our own.”
“Then congratulations are in order. May your union be long, happy, and fruitful.”
Sir Acerion wrote:"Yes, Your Grace, I would love to rule over my families' holdings once we reclaim the entire region, but would not be adverse to the possibility of obtaining additional lands that may come through further expansion of the realm," Acerion reveals. "I can not say to what ends a decision will be made by our king, but I will be honored to serve in whatever capacity, minor or major, that is offered to me at the appropriate time."
“I am sure that there will be a place for you, Sir Acerion. Cynalon always awards its heroes and you have proven to be a hero in our lands.”

GM Notes:

Baron Validar, Sir Corley, and Regnak return to town without incident. Everyone is back at the Amber Waves Inn and alerted to the impending arrival of the kidnappers. Midnight is about an hour off yet, so you have time to prepare.

Now what?

Chareos

Sitting near Argent, Chareos will converse lightly and say his goodbyes when the time arrives. “Till then my sweet.” And returns her kiss.
Looking up from his seat, Chareos gazes upon Lyonessa as she begins to ask a question. Leaning back in his chair and crossing his arms in front of him he listens intently and begins thinking. Rubbing the scruff of his chin, he replies, “It is possible.” After some thought, he adds, “There is a spell similar to what you speak, but from my recollection it works far differently. It is based on race, evil and good. I never conceived to use a spell in such a way, but it does make for an useful spell. If it were made. From what magic I know, there is no such spell of what you speak.”
“It seems that we haven’t had much time to chat over these last few days. I usually try to make a point to get to know those around me. I know much about each of your from your reputations, but very little personally. As I understand it, only Sir Acerion here is of noble birth. The rest of you were granted titles from the King. Ruling in some capacity or taking a more private approach to life?”
“I am not of noble birth. I come from a simple home where my family raises horses of some standing.” With a thoughtful look, “There are many things which I would wish to see in years time: peace, prosperity not only for the rich and noble but for the poor and unfortunate. A family, though all these are far from our grasp.

I do not believe I have the stomach for politics nor wish to, Your Grace. Perhaps become a Battle mage beneath our Arch Mage, to protect our lands, and when I am not called upon, research and pass on the knowledge I have learned and raise fine horses, perhaps even marry.

I am but a simple man with simple dreams.”

Regnak

Rek listens to the feral man’s words with an easy look, much of this is already known to him as he knows Akorros far better than most. Regnak turns his gaze to the surrounding area but they are quickly drawn back upon hearing the words he spoke:
“They fear very little and regard mortals as little more than toys to be played with and destroyed when they grow tired of them. But there is one thing that they do fear. It is only spoken of in whispers, but they did imprison something that they feared within Castle Elcadan. Just what this is, I do not know.”
Rek can only imagine what things they could hide away from the world to ease their fears.

As they take their leave from the priest, Rek reaches into his pack and offers the priest one of his rations. “It is not much, but it fills the belly,” he says as he tosses it to him.

Catching up to the others Rek pulls alongside Validar, “Much of what he spoke of is true of Akorros. Many lose their lives within the gladiator pits. It is even said they drag drunkards and less desirables in order to stem their tide. I am ashamed to see what once was held dear, fall into lawlessness and chaos. A Devil's playground within our boundaries. If our ancestors could see it now, they would be disgusted.”

"Then maybe it offers a chance for someone to make it in the future," Lyonessa says with a smile. "Doesn't help us now though. We'll just have to be careful."

There isn't much to do until Sherra returns with word of what is coming. Lyonessa knows that they will be prepared for these abducters, but wonders a few things.

"I wonder if they normally just overpower a mage with sheer numbers before any magic can be cast," Lyonessa ponders aloud. "or if they have some sort of resistance. If it is the latter then we might have a struggle on our hands."

Ready for our own ambush...

Baron Validar -

“I do not hold out high hopes for success,” Jacob easily answers. “But I must try. I do not fear for myself among my kin. My reputation as a warrior of the arena will make most think twice of attacking me. As for temptation, it is always there; ready to rise up when least expected. If I am worthy of Eldath, then I shall defeat that particular foe.”

"Very well. Your path is your own choice. I hope you have some success."

Jacob bows his head in response. “You are wise beyond your years, Baron. I will pay for my deeds eventually. My place in the afterlife has already been secured. Nothing can change that.”

"I find that hard to believe. I do not prfess to know much of how the afterlife works and certainly I do not think long and hard on it. However, if Eldath does indeed take you under her wing, then you shall join her, if what I am told is true. In any case, such a jedgement is not yet upon you and any number of things can change between this moment and that one."

“I thank you for your advice, Baron, but I cannot leave no more than you cannot seek to defeat my family. I must at least make the attempt otherwise I would be less than a man.”

"You are more noble than many who profess to be, Jacob. I wish you well on your adventure and I hope your sacrifice is fruitful."

Jacob then tells the trio some more information about the family.

"You mother and her sisters are extremely dangerous foes. This we are certain of and we are attempting to take every step possible to protect ourselves and these lands against them. I can dare say that I have yet to face such an insidious and wide-spread foe, but we will strive to defeat them and defeat them we shall."

"Interesting," Validar will say in response to the information about Castle Elcadan. "It may very well prove to be even more deadly, dangerous and evil than the foe we now face, but it is certainly something work exploring and learning about."

"Flying ships, you say," Validar responds, his interest piqued. "I have heard some legends of such things. Those would be of extreme value to Cynalon." Validar looks to Corley with a quick smile on his face. "It is the very thing we have been desiring: rapid transit for a large group of people."

Turing back to Jacob, "Slavers are as much an enemy as any, and with such a potential reward, we will certainly continue our campaign against the Devilles allies, if at all possible."

"Yes, that is my understanding. Akorros needs a resettling even more than Elcadan. We shall see what comes of our encounters with your siblings. I fear that I am not one to be merciful, unless the circumstances truly warrant such. We shall see what comes of this when the leaders of the family have been permanantly dealt with."

“I bid you good fortune on your mission.”

"As do we to you on yours. May you find redemption."

"I do not doubt your words, Regnak. Elcadan has always been considered an evil and horrible place to my people. We are finding out that it is a different kind of evil and a diiferent type of horror, however."

"Our ancestors would indeed be disgusted by what has befallen our once proud kingdom. We owe it to our former kings as well as our current king to strive to return her to glory and beyond. It is why we are here."

The small group returns to the Amber Waves Inn without any incident. There Validar will meet up with Sherra and find out what she learned.

"Clearly we are being set up for some ambush or attack, and likely, they will not expect much in the way of opposition."

Validar will gather the group together. "They seem to be expecting us to not put up much of a fight from the sounds of it, so we must give the impression of succumbing to their treachery. We will split the group evenly and have everyone appear to be sleeping, although we will be ready for battle."

In the Duke's room, we will have Sir Belfor, Sir Acerion, Squire Flint, Squire Moonshadow, Chareos, and myself. This leaves Ivy, Lyonessa, Sir Corley, Squire Sara, Squire Jocasta, and Phelan to the other room. We will not post guards outside. Let them think we have all given in to their drug and we all think we are safe."

"I would like Sherra to be positioned outsde and out of sight to be able to warn us to when the men will be approaching. Perhaps on a nearby building rooftop or somewhere a signal can be made to one or both of the room's windows. We must still be ready in case there is a secret passage which leads to the rooms here somehow." Validar will have a few people search to rooms for any possible secret doors. "Regnak will join her outside and be hidden ready for her signal to follow into the inn."

"From the sounds of it, we should not face too strong of an opposition. We have no way of knowing which of the rooms will be targeted by them, if not both. Each would have a tempting prize. If both are attacked, we should be sufficiently dispersed to deal with them. If only one room, then hopefully the others will hear and be able to rush to their aid."

"Sherra and Regnak will follow at a far enough distance to not tip off the attackers before they get to our rooms, but also to block them from an easy exit, should that be the case."

"Sir Belfor and Sir Acerion will remain with the Duke regardless of what happens. His safety is paramount. Does anyone have any questions?"

Ivy:

Ivy listens as Validar’s long speech about the nature of priests and gods and finds herself biting back from responding. Entering into a long debate about the subject is pointless at this time.

“You may be right, Baron,” Ivy will concede. “We may find out for sure in the days to come.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion smiles at Ivy's words in response to the Duke's inquiry. He has often thought about such possibilities and although they are somewhere in the elusive future, it always warms him to hear his lovely lady express such similar thoughts.

Ivy holds Sir Acerion’s hand as they chat with the Duke.

“None of us knows what the future brings. But perhaps these new holdings could be someplace a little warmer?” Ivy adds with a smile. “After our dealing with the cold one, I grow weary of the chill of winter.”
Chareos wrote:“I am not of noble birth. I come from a simple home where my family raises horses of some standing.” With a thoughtful look, “There are many things which I would wish to see in years time: peace, prosperity not only for the rich and noble but for the poor and unfortunate. “Those are very nice dreams, Chareos,” Ivy will say. “I hope that you gain all that you desire in the years to come.”

Later, the others return bearing warnings. Sherra has overheard that we are to have visitors this evening. Baron Validar sets out a plan of action.
Baron Validar wrote:In the Duke's room, we will have Sir Belfor, Sir Acerion, Squire Flint, Squire Moonshadow, Chareos, and myself. “We must not harm these men,” Ivy will warn. “They are either just misguided or entranced themselves. I have a Hold Person spell at the ready. I will cast it on those who enter our room unannounced. May the Blue Lady bless us this evening.”

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:

Sir Corley listens as the Baron speaks with Jacob of Eldath.
Jacob wrote:“They fear very little and regard mortals are little more than toys to be played with and destroyed when they grow tired of them. But there is one thing that they do fear. It is only spoken of in whispers, but they did imprison something that they feared within Castle Elcadan. Just what this is, I do not know.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Interesting," Validar will say in response to the information about Castle Elcadan. "It may very well prove to be even more deadly, dangerous and evil than the foe we now face, but it is certainly something work exploring and learning about."
“What was it my father used to say? The enemy of my enemy is my friend? Unleashing something that the sisters fear could very well cause them to focus their efforts away from us, at least for a time. But as you say, we will surely have to contend with both eventually.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Flying ships, you say," Validar responds, his interest piqued.

“It is as we suspected,” Sir Corley adds. “Eventually, we shall have to march on Akorros to get to the root of this evil.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Our ancestors would indeed be disgusted by what has befallen our once proud kingdom. We owe it to our former kings as well as our current king to strive to return her to glory and beyond. It is why we are here."
“Here, here! The Sons of Cynalon will restore the glory that has been tainted by all this evil!”

Back at the Inn, the Lady Sherra reveals that those in town plot against us.

“Well done, Lady Sherra! The intelligence you have gathered will prove pivotal in the conflict to come.”

Baron Validar reveals his strategy for the battle to come.

“A few thoughts come to mind, my friend. As I understand Lady Sherra’s tale, those who plot against us are being gathered. We can assume that they will come together here at the Inn, or at the warehouse. It might behoove us to take the battle to them instead of waiting for them to arrive. A few us go to the warehouse right now and try to catch them unaware and unprepared. We could stop this plot before they even reach the Inn.”

“But if you wish to simply wait for their arrival, then I would suggest, with the fair Lady Lyonessa’s approval, of having her familiar Dusk watch from overhead. No movement would escape Dusk’s eyes and we would be alerted to the enemies impending arrival.”

“These rooms are not large and any combat will take up much space. I would suggest seeing if any of the adjacent rooms are empty. If they are, then a few of us should be stationed there, so that we can attack the enemy from their unprotected flanks. Perhaps even relocate the Duke to a different room for his further protection.”
Lady Ivy wrote:“We must not harm these men,” Ivy will warn. “They are either just misguided or entranced themselves. I have a Hold Person spell at the ready. I will cast it on those who enter our room unannounced. May the Blue Lady bless us this evening.”
“A sound strategy, Lady Ivy. And I will take your words to heart. If, as you suspect, these men are not ready for a battle, then they may very well be cowed into surrendering without a weapon being drawn. Regardless, we shall soon learn the truth of things.”

plans to be made...

Sherra:
“Well done, Lady Sherra! The intelligence you have gathered will prove pivotal in the conflict to come.”
"Thank you, Sir Corley," Sherra replies with one of her famous smiles. She listens to what Validar has planned, noting Corley adds some changes and even suggests pre-emptive action.

Either way is aggreable to Sherra, so she waits to see if Validar will change any of the plan. If she is still to be outside, she will see what can be used for an effective signal.

Sherra figures maybe some small stones that won't make too much noise except right against the window might be best. Otherwise maybe a visual signal if she is in a place that someone at the window can spot her.

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Sir Acerion:

“None of us knows what the future brings. But perhaps these new holdings could be someplace a little warmer?” Ivy adds with a smile. “After our dealing with the cold one, I grow weary of the chill of winter.”

Acerion laughes lightly at Ivy's request. "If I have any say in the matter, then we shall see what can be done," he promises.

Sherra returns, as does Validar and the others. All have interesting information and plans are formed. Acerion knows no matter what decision is made, his role will not change.

"Sir Belfor and Sir Acerion will remain with the Duke regardless of what happens. His safety is paramount. Does anyone have any questions?"

Acerion nods in understanding and has nothing to ask. These men will fail in their vile task of abduction this night. It is only a matter of how they decide their own fate. He knows Ivy would prefer no blood be shed but sometimes the actions of men driven by conviction, desperation or fear offer little room for quarter to be given.

Preparations...

Baron Validar -

“We must not harm these men,” Ivy will warn. “They are either just misguided or entranced themselves. I have a Hold Person spell at the ready. I will cast it on those who enter our room unannounced. May the Blue Lady bless us this evening.”

"To be honest, we do not know that for certain. There is the possibility that these men are only desirous of money and will do anything to get it. Or they could be evil, just as well. I agree that we do not need to slaughter them out of hand, but if they resist, it may be necessary to shed some blood."

Sir Corley also offers some suggestions.

"The problem is if we go to the warehouse and they converge here, then we have split our forces and they will not have. It should not be difficult to capture someone from this group, perhaps all and interrogate them about others involved. I do not wish to leave our defenses weakened, as the safety of the Duke is more important than anything. There is the chance that we will see more opponents than simple miltia or brigands."

"I agree with having Dusk out as a sentry as well. He has proven to be quite helpful at that task in the past. Lyonessa, if you would agree?"

"As for moving to other rooms, I do not think that combat will be the ultimate outcome and a show of force should end this battle unless they have a powerful leader with them. I do not want to tip them off nor split up our group too much. In this two rooms should be enough. We will station one of us by the door in each room, crouched down to not draw suspicion. They when they come in, we have someone behind them."

Satisfied with his plans, Validar will wish everyone a pleasant evening.

"Oh, certainly," Lyonessa agrees. "That will give us quite the advantage."

Lyonessa will give Dusk instruction and release him outside a bit before the appropriate time. She will have her faithful companion circle in a large area first and then move in closer. She is most curious to see if Dusk spots the men coming from different buildings or if they all come in one conspicious group. it might tell her something about how freely they can operate in the town.
