Hammerfall #1

With the situation at the Ice Palace dealt with, the dwarves can turn their attention back to traveling the mine tunnels from Fort Fletcher to reach the abandoned dwarven city of Hammerfall. Some of the tunnels have been explored so far, but the explorations ended with encountering spiders on two fronts. It seems that the 2nd coal supply depot from Hammerfall has been infested with the creatures.

But there is another problem before even reaching the spider nest. Past earthquakes have opened up a chasm that connected the tunnels with mine cart tracks in them. There’s about another weeks worth of coal in the first depot, so access to the second supply will be required and soon. This will require the building of a bridge over the gap so that the flow of coal to Fort Fletcher can continue unhindered.

After the dwarves have relaxed from their expedition to the Ice Palace, Baluk Ironforge reports what has transpired in your absence. “We continued to move the coal from the supply area to the Fort Fletcher. I estimate one more day’s work before that cavern has been emptied. The coal bins here in Fort Fletcher are overflowing!”

“Constructing a proper bridge over the chasm will take time and manpower. But once the workers have cleared the first coal supply cave, then we can concentrate on the bridge.”

“But that is not the end of our troubles,” Dougan Ironhammer adds. “Even with the bridge in place, there are other issues that must be dealt with before more coal can be delivered to Fort Fletcher. The second supply cave seems to be the main source of the spider infestation. Secondly, both the ladder down to the cavern and the pulley arrangement there are in need of repair. That does not mention the trouble with the spiders living there.”

“According to the maps from the dwarven mine registry, there is a supply depot that can be accessed from the second coal depot,” Baluk continues. “It should have all the timbers, mine tracks, even replacement parts we need to carry out our task.”

“There was one more curious thing that transpired in your absence, Lady Aria. We had been using the chasm to a dumping ground for the debris from the cave in. However, it appears that the weight of all that rock caused the bottom of the chasm to give way, causing all that debris to fall even deeper into the earth. There’s nothing showing on our maps, but there must be another, unexplored cavern down there to explain this.”

Later that evening, Jennak Firehand will tentatively step up to Grondar. “Good evening to you, noble priest. I have been thinking about what we talked about before. I have decided to dedicate my life to Berronar Truesilver. Will you train me in the priestly arts?”

GM Notes:

Some of the fruits of my pre-post work are now available to you. As a sticky in this forum is a list of the various characters you’ll be interacting with in this game, along with all the dwarves that have been identified thus far and the important Fort Fletcher personnel.

In the private area, you’ll find an encounter map for the mines leading to Hammerfall. Much of the text there was lifted from past posts. With it being nearly a year since this exploration started, I had to go back and refresh my own memory.

How are you going to proceed now?

Grondar:

Grondar listens to the reports from Baluk and Dougan. The situation is difficult, but stable for the moment. However, they need to get the mine operating again.

"You've made good progress in our absence. Good work by you and your crews."

Grondar looks over at Aria. "It seems the first order of business is to get the mine going. In order to do that, we're going to have to root those spiders out. We'll have to be careful of poison, based on our previous experience. Fire should be useful in burning out the webs."

Later, Grondar is approached by the fair Jennak, who wishes to join Berronar's priesthood. A huge smile spreads across Grondar's weathered features at her declaration.

"How wonderful! I would be delighted to train you, Jennak. Of course, it will be up to Berronar herself to determine whether you may become a full priest or a lay minister. She will provide her decision when we perform the ritual of ordination. Either way, I can train you in the skills and rituals that you will need."

The character summary and mine map are very helpful, Mad.

I'm using the term full priest to refer to those with access to priestly magic. A lay minister would be those who don't have that access but perform other rituals and duties for the priesthood.

Aria:

The fun with ice priestess and other cold critters has ended. Time to get back to the important stuff! After relaxing and downing a fee dwarven ales it's time to get back to work. Baluk and Dougan report on what happened while we were away.
“Good! I’ve more than had enough cold for the time being!”

Aria mulls over what she’s learned. It’s clear that continuing the flow of coal is vital to keeping their base of operations habitable. So that means clearing out any squatters they might find along the way!
Grondar looks over at Aria. "It seems the first order of business is to get the mine going. In order to do that, we're going to have to root those spiders out. We'll have to be careful of poison, based on our previous experience. Fire should be useful in burning out the webs."
“Aye, that is the plan, Grondar. But if the chasm collapse opened up access to an unknown cave or tunnel system, then we must explore that as well if its just to determine that there is nothing dangerous down there. We don’t need any dangerous critters climbing up the chasm after us!”

“Okay, here’s what we’re going to do. Grondar, I want you, Farian, Salem, and Senoia to go explore those caves and see if there is any danger there. Oran, Dougan, and Rat will come with me. We’ll clear out the spiders at the second depot and then explore towards the supply cave. Should your explorations find nothing, then use the lower tunnel to catch up with us.”

“We’re still close to Fort Fletcher at this point, so it will continue to serve as our base of operations. But this will not always be the case. As we clear out more and more of the mines, we’ll have to move our base along with it. Eventually it’ll just be impractical to keeping traveling back. There should be more dwarves arriving each week to help fill out our ranks as our existing force is going to be stretched thin very quickly.”

“All right lads! Get a good night's rest, tomorrow we’ve got work to do!”

“Tis about time!” He exclaims a little loudly, “Maybe we will find some veins of ore as well!” he says hopefully as he recalls a few times he found a few veins of ore in his time.

As the night unwinds Farian will make his way to the armory and pick out a short sword and strap it to his hip.

Farian will be ready for the way down to the tunnel.

Grondar:

After hearing his input, Aria issues orders to the group. Considering how much trouble they had with the spiders before, Grondar is concerned by her choice to split up the team at this point. However, it is her decision to make as leader, and Grondar will honor it. Better have plenty of spells ready to help with any poison they encounter...

"We'll be ready," Grondar replies.

Farian sounds eager to get started, and has hopes of finding new veins while they explore. "Since we're going into a new cave, I suppose that's entirely possible."

That night, Grondar makes sure he has a good long rest in preparation for their explorations the next day. Come morning, he invites Jennak to join him for devotions - during which he will begin teaching her the most basic prayers and rituals, as well as their significance.

Jennak is ready to begin her training. Progress is as to be expected for a novice, but she does know some of the basics from attending past services.

Into the Mines:

It’s back into the mines once more. The journey is made from Fort Fletcher to encounter area #5, where the chasm bisects the feeder tunnel to coal depot #1. There have been no further signs of spiders coming up the chasm since Farian and Salem were down there. They must have retreated back to their nests.

The ropes used to climb down earlier are still there. Farian and Salem go down first, followed by Grondar and Senoia.

“I’m not fond of going down holes like this,” Senoia relates to Grondar as they wait their turn. “But if there’s something down there for my hammers to smash, then it’ll be worth it!”

Farian and Salem reach the lower tunnel and examine what they see. The bottom of the chasm has indeed collapsed! The opening is 40’ below their current location and is about 5’ wide. Neither man can see where this opening bottoms out.

Grondar and Senoia climbs down as Farian and Salem pound iron spikes into the rock to create new secure points for climbing lines. Lines are secured to the spikes and then tossed down into the hole. Once more Farian and Salem go first.

The hole at the bottom of the chasm is reached and at this point the explorers can just make out the floor of the chamber below. Rappelling down further, the dwarves pass through the hole and find themselves in a vast cavern. The floor is about sixty feet below them.

The chamber is a vast and naturally formed cavern. At the entry point, the walls are 40’ across, but neither end of the cavern can be seen. The cavern is formed of limestone and there are huge limestone formations here. Stalagmites rise up like small hills here and there. Small ledges are noted along the sides of the cavern the dwarves can see. These range from 8-20’ above the floor.

Farian and Salem reach the cavern floor safely. The temperature is comfortable here. Heavy clothing for warmth is not required. There is an occasional noise in the cavern, but nothing that seems dangerous. Just the typical noise from such a large natural cavern.

Grondar and Senoia soon join the dwarves in the vast cavern.

As Salem and himself make ready to go down the cavern wall Farian, double checks his climbing gear. “Least we have a priest with us this time.” The scout says as he takes his place and repels down the side, “Let’s make some headway this day.”

Releasing himself from the rope, Farian moves to the lip placing a sturdy hand on the cavern wall for support and peers down, With a small whistle he sees the chasm in the floor. Taking out a few Iron spikes, Farian begins hammering them into the solid rock. “Are you ready Salem?” he asks his companion while he pounds the stakes in. “No telling what maybe down there.” He says stating the obivious.

Farian will begin looking about cautiously and methodically as he was taught, for the moment not leaving the parties sight. Hammer out and ready, if the need should arise.

"I'm sure you'll do fine. Just remember that we are first and foremost guardians and caretakers of our people. Though little attention is paid to the problem within our culture, due to our low birthrates, promoting the family may be even more important within our culture than nearly any other."

---

They prepare for the descent toward the newly-opened cavern. Farian and Salem lead the way, building a rope ladder as they go. This will make the trip easier for Grondar and Senoia.
Senoia wrote:“I’m not fond of going down holes like this,” Senoia relates to Grondar as they wait their turn. “But if there’s something down there for my hammers to smash, then it’ll be worth it!”
Grondar smiles at the young warrioress. "An unusual sentiment for a dwarf, Senoia, though understandable under the circumstances. As for something to smash, I'm sure you'll have plenty of opportunity before we complete the liberation of Hammerfell."

Once the ropes are in place, Grondar and Senoia begin making their way down. Fortunately, the dark isn't a great impediment for the dwarves. Still, Grondar has made certain that they are bringing plenty of torches.

"I'll do my best," Grondar whispers in reply. The cavern is huge, and obviously natural, as shown by the rock formations. It is quite a sight, and Grondar cannot resist looking about a little at the magnificent rock flows and striata.

Noting Farian beginning a methodical search, Grondar gestures for him to return. Looking around at the others when they are all together, Grondar puts forth his plan. "I have an idea that may help us explore this cavern. It seems to me that we could set up torches at regular intervals as we go to make it easier to keep track of our progress and reduce the likelihood of getting lost.

"Farian, I suggest you and Senoia begin working your way along the wall to the left, and Salem and I will do the same on the right. If all goes well, we will eventually meet up on the other side."

Large Cavern:

Farian and Salem reach the cavern floor without incident. Farian scouts the initial landing area and finds it secure. Grondar draws him back.

“That’s a sound notion,” Salem says. “The walls are not that far apart here, so we can keep each other in sight at the same time. The only problems I see is that the torches will only stay lit for so long, typically half an hour or so before burning out. There is also the danger of attracting any nearby predators to us woth their light. That’s why I typically use chalk to mark my path.”

Regardless of whether you use torches or not, the dwarves will move out to explore. It’s not too far along before Salem notices something near the side of the cavern wall. Grondar follows and the first thing he notices are some old bones strewn about.

“There could be predators about,” Salem warms. It looks like some old gear is also in the area. A leather pouch and a few old weapons are mixed in with the bones.

Farian and Senoia can’t help be aware of what Grondar and Salem discovered. Farian listens and intently, while Senoia seems bored. Suddenly Senoia calls out.

“What the--!? Leggo of me!”

Turning Farian can see that Senoia is being lifted into the air by some unseen force! Grondar and Salem can hear this, but cannot see Senoia due to the rock formations in between.

GM Notes:

Everyone in the cavern has the standard 60’ of infravision like this most dwarves. I use the simplified version of infravision. Essentially it allows you to see normally in the dark up to 60’. After that you’ll have trouble seeing like anyone with normal sight. I had assumed that you were not using torches during your explorations thus far. A torch provides normal light for a radius of 15’. Obviously, in the dark a torch can be seen from far away, but the range of sight for someone holding the torch is only 15’ as it interferes with infravision. (Much like the way our eyes need to adjust when going from light to dark or darkness to light.)

Now what?

"Very good, Jennak. I see you've been paying attention during services," Grondar says with a nod. "Now, let's begin with the ritual of cleansing..."

---
Senoia wrote:“Oh, don’t get me wrong, priest,” Senoia retorts. “I like mines fine, I just prefer them underfoot, not dangling over a pit like a puppet on a string.”
Grondar nods, smiling. "Like I said, quite understandable." In his experience, most dwarves are so unwilling to admit any sort of trepidation, that her comment comes as something of a breath of fresh air.

---
Salem wrote:“That’s a sound notion,” Salem says. “The walls are not that far apart here, so we can keep each other in sight at the same time. "While admittedly this is not my area of expertise, I was envisioning Senoia and I following a little ways behind to set up and light the torches at intervals so as not to ruin yours and Farian's sight. I don't intend for them to light the cavern, just provide a means of finding our way easily from point to point.

"I do share your concern regarding their duration. We may well have to go back periodically and replace some of the older torches as we go. Hopefully, the supply depot will have a good supply of lanterns so that we can set up more reliable and longer-lasting lighting down here.

"I'm less concerned with alerting any inhabitants of the cavern. They must be used to living in the dark, so the light is more likely to inhibit them than help them. Also, I'd rather draw them out and deal with them while we're on our guard than have them catch us unawares later. Still, I will leave the decision to you two as you are the experts."

Soon they begin to explore, and it's not long before Salem finds the remains of some previous explorer. Grondar will wait patiently as Salem checks to see if there is anything of use left among the corpse's remains, keeping alert for intruders as she does so.
Senoia wrote:“What the--!? Leggo of me!”
The alarm in Senoia's voice tells Grondar all he needs to know. It seems they didn't have to wait long for one of the cave's inhabitants to find them.

"Salem!" he calls. "We have to go help her!" That said, Grondar races off to help deal with whatever has attacked Senoia.
____________________________________________________________
Note that they wouldn't be carrying lighted torches, only lighting them once they are set up and then leaving them behind. Grondar and Senoia would have to deal with their eyes adjusting periodically, but Salem and Farian should be fine.

BTW, can chalk be seen with infravision? I wouldn't have thought so.

The version of Infravision I mentioned above is defined as "Being able to see in the dark as clearly as you can in normal light". Thus chalk can be seen and you can even read as if it was bright out. The only limitation is that this type of vision has a range of 60'. Beyond sixty feet, things appear like they would for anyone with normal vision. Everything beyond 60' is dark in the cavern, although other sources of light would be seen, such as a torch off in the distance.

Farian’s eyes widen as he sees the female dwarf rise up in the air by some unseen force!

“Dagnabbit!” he says as his eyes scan above the female dwarf all the while muttering under his breath, “Dis is why I work alone…”

If Farian sees anything moving above her, or even a glint of an eye Farian will raise his crossbow. “Senoia you see anything up there?” depending on what she sees or says will depend on his course of action. If she says nothing Farian will scan the ledges for a glint of an eye or metalor outline that isnt rock. If she sees something Farian will follow her instructions putting a bolt into the direction she speaks of.

(Would Farian have any Idea what type of creature may use these tactics as well as habits?)

A squad of dwarves led by Farian and Grondar have climbed down to the large cavern underneath the chasm. They’ve entered into a dark cavern of naturally formed limestone. They begin to explore.
Farian wrote:“Be careful what you wish for.” Farian adds grimly, “There are worse things that linger in the dark, Drow for one.( If Farian knows of other creatures that would reside in the dark glooms, Mind flayers or what not he will mention them.) I’d rather face Spiders then a Drow.” Spitting the last word out with a bit of hatred.
“But the drow favor spiders, so more often then not, you’ll get both,” Salem retorts. “Worry not Farian, I am a professional explorer with years of experience. I can imagine the dangers we’ll face down here.”
Grondar wrote:"While admittedly this is not my area of expertise, I was envisioning Senoia and I following a little ways behind to set up and light the torches at intervals so as not to ruin yours and Farian's sight. I don't intend for them to light the cavern, just provide a means of finding our way easily from point to point.
“Ah,” Salem answers in realization. “I misunderstood what you were saying. Yes, that does make sense.”

“That is certainly one train of thought,” Salem states. “I’m more used to stealthy exploration, then simply the warriors notion of drawing potential enemies to them and getting the battle over with. Both have their merits, I would suppose.”

In short order, Salem and Grondar come over some remains. There are bones and old gear there. But before Salem and examine them closer, a cry of alarm from Senoia diverts there attention.

On the other side of the cave, Farian just discovered that Senoia is in distress.
Farian wrote:“Dagnabbit!” he says as his eyes scan above the female dwarf all the while muttering under his breath, “Dis is why I work alone…”
Looking up, Farian can see a nearly transparent line drawing Senoia up to a ledge overhead. A large insect like creature that seems like a combination of a spider and a lobster can be seen there, pulling Senoia up. The dwarven battlemaiden swings her warhammers about, vainly trying to hit something. All she succeeds in doing is causing the strand holding her to sway back and forth.

“Fight fair you creepy-crawly!”

Grondar comes rushing up, followed shortly by Salem. The identity of this creature is just on the tip of Farian’s tongue when Salem cries out, “Cave Fisher!”

Salem wrote:“That is certainly one train of thought,” Salem states. “I’m more used to stealthy exploration, then simply the warriors notion of drawing potential enemies to them and getting the battle over with. Both have their merits, I would suppose.”
"I have nothing against stealthy avoidance," Grondar says with a grin. "However, with this cavern connecting to the mines, we'll have no choice but to deal with anything inhabiting it sooner or later - and later could come at a far less opportune moment. Under the circumstances, it seems to me like the more prudent course in this particular case."

Racing across the cavern in his enchanted boots, Grondar sees Senoia being drawn upwards. Poised above them is a strange creature the likes of which the priest has never seen before. Senoia's shout gives it a name, but it means little to Grondar.

"What know you of this creature, Farian? Has it any particular weakness that you know of?" Grondar asks as he looks about for a way up onto the ledge.

Looking up, Farian can see a nearly transparent line drawing Senoia up to a ledge overhead. Taking up his crossbow and leveling it so it lines up with the cave fisher, Farian mutters to himself as he begins to take aim. “Tis A cave fisher all right top feeders if you will. That line needs to be broken otherwise Senoia will get ripped to shreds!”

“I heard stories that the line is hard to break but can be broken by acid or the likes.” Taking aim at the Cave fisher Farian will look for where the spider silk is coming from and attempt to put an arrow near that spot. Hopefully it will cause the cave fisher to let go.

"However, with this cavern connecting to the mines, we'll have no choice but to deal with anything inhabiting it sooner or later - and later could come at a far less opportune moment. Under the circumstances, it seems to me like the more prudent course in this particular case."
“Fortunately, the opening is sixty feet over head to our mines,” Salem answers. “That’ll be enough of a barrier to most creatures down here. Regardless we have to find what is down here no matter what approach we take.”

A cry from Senoia has drawn everyone’s attention. Finding the source, everyone can see the dwarven battle maiden being pulled upwards by a Cave Fisher! It’s a large, 7’ long, insect-like creature with large claws. It uses a nearly transparent ‘line’ to drag in prey much like a fisherman would.
Taking up his crossbow and leveling it so it lines up with the cave fisher, Farian mutters to himself as he begins to take aim. “Tis A cave fisher all right top feeders if you will. That line needs to be broken otherwise Senoia will get ripped to shreds!”
“Not if I’ve got anything to say about it!” Senoia cries out, swinging her hammers even more wildly, causing the line holding her to move even more erratically. The Cave Fisher is struggling to bring the feisty dwarven battlemaiden upwards!
Farian wrote:“I heard stories that the line is hard to break but can be broken by acid or the likes.” Taking aim at the Cave fisher Farian will look for where the spider silk is coming from and attempt to put an arrow near that spot. Hopefully it will cause the cave fisher to let go.
“Aye, that be the truth of the matter,” Salem adds drawing his shortsword. “You’ll need enchanted weapons to break that line, Farian. But maybe we can drag the monster down here? We can try to reach Senoia and add our weight to the line. We might be able to over power it that way.”

There doesn’t seem to be anyway to reach the ledge other than climbing up with a rope. No easy access.

Farian takes aim with his crossbow and fires. His bolt hits the Cave Fisher, but its line remains intact.

Now what?

“If its struggling to bring her to her then let us burden it some more.” Assuming there is more rope with them(no idea how deep they were going, assuming they brought rope.) He will tie a rope about his waist and look at Grondar, “How’s your throwing arm?” As he looks back at Senoia, “Throw me toward her, Ill get a hold of her and you pull!”

If any objections, “There’s little time to climb then attach a line to her. It might very well be the best way!”

Farian is open to suggestions but as time is running thin.....

Cave fisher. Grondar has heard mention of them once or twice before, but that's about it. Thankfully, Farian has better knowledge of this particular threat.

Senoia is clearly fighting hard, but ineffectively at the moment. Farian's crossbow shot proves no more effective. Worse still, there appears no good way for him to reach the monster.
Salem wrote:“Aye, that be the truth of the matter,” Salem adds drawing his shortsword. “You’ll need enchanted weapons to break that line, Farian. But maybe we can drag the monster down here? We can try to reach Senoia and add our weight to the line. We might be able to over power it that way.”

The beginnings of a plan begin to form as Grondar tries to decide whether it's worth trying his crossbow. "I'm not sure about my throwing ability, but I should be strong enough. I can carry you over under her and throw you upwards. Leave yourself some extra line on your end, and you can tie yourself to her once you get up there. Once you're both secure, I'll back up and start pulling. Hopefully, I can drag that beast right off his perch."

Grondar puts away his mace and shield to free his arms for the work to come.

Senoia has run afoul of a cave fisher and the others are trying to save her. Farian suggests tying a rope around himself and then having Grondar toss him up in an attempt to latch on to Senoia. No one has any better suggestions, so the plan is a go.

Farian quickly ties a rope around himself while Grondar stands ready underneath the swaying Senoia. Once Farian is ready, Grondar provides a step for the scout. Grondar grunts loudly and propels Farian up in to the air! Farian latches out tightly to Senoia’s leg and both begin to gently sway back and forth. Farian then ties part of the rope around Senoia’s leg.

Down below, Grondar and Salem grab a hold of the rope and begin to pull. Slowly the two dwarves begin to overpower the cave fisher and Senoia is being pulled towards the ground. The tug of war with the dwarves in the middle carries on for several long moments.

“Ack!” Senoia cries out. “It feels like you’re trying to split me like a wishbone!”

You’re not quite sure what happened next. The line either snapped or the cave fisher let go on his end, because the opposing force is simply gone. Senoia and Farian fall to the cavern floor with a crash. Looking up you can see the Cave Fisher skittering away in search of easier prey.

Senoia catches her breath and then regards Farian. “Thanks for the help, but you can let go now.”

Tying a rope about his waist Farian looks to Grondar who picks him up and throws him straight up. Extending his arms Farian gets ready for the impact. “mmph!” as he grabbles Senoia’s leg. Then secures the line. Within moments the others begin to pull back on the line.

“Ack!” Senoia cries out. “It feels like you’re trying to split me like a wishbone!”
“Its better then being ripped to shreds!” Farian calls back. As the others continue pulling, “Come on put your backs into it!” he calls to Grondar and Salem.

“Don’t mention it.” He says gruffly,”You’d do the same for any of us.” Fumbling with his arms as they landed funny Farian blushes slightly and says. “Getting slower in my old age.” Says with a bit of a smirk on his face.

Grondar:

His first throw is good and Farian is able to latch onto Senoia. After some fiddling about, he manages to get the line secured, though not to the best spot. Grondar realizes he should have suggested tying it to the cave fisher's line, rather than Senoia, but it's too late now.

Grondar takes the line in hand and begins to resolute march away from the ledge where the cave fisher sits. Soon, the rope grows taut and it becomes a real contest of strength.

After some moments, the line suddenly goes slack, causing Grondar to stumble forward. Senoia and Farian fall to the ground in a heap, which demonstrates that the rope didn't break.

Seeing the creature scuttle away, Grondar returns to check on his comrades. As they untangle themselves, Grondar asks, "Anyone hurt?" A healing prayer rests on the tip of his tongue, should it be needed.

“Aye,” Senoia agrees. “Pity that thing didn’t get close enough for me to bash’m with my hammers! Cowardly critter!”

“I’ll live, good priest,” Senoia answers. “My pride has been hurt more than anything.”

With the excitement over, the dwarves continue on with their explorations. “Let’s stay clear of the ledges,” Salem offers. “Cave Fisher lines are notoriously hard to find, even if you are looking for them. Just keep about ten feet away from the bottom of ledges and we should be fine.”

Salem returns to the debris he found before while Grondar and Senoia light torches. “Grondar,” Salem calls out. “You’ll want to see this.” When he arrives, Salem hands Grondar a ring. “It was among the bones.”

Examining the ring, Grondar realizes that it is a brass ring engraved with a dwarven bonding oath and the name Davris. Bonding Rings are part of the Berronar faith and is akin, but not necessarily the same as wedding rings. The rings mean that two dwarves have agreed to be bonded together, but they do not have to be married.

The engraving reads one of the standard bonding messages: “By this token I pledge my trust and love, and offer the use of my last sharp pick. May the earth be kind”. Its clear to Grondar that a dwarf named Davris once possessed this ring.

Salem finds 22 gold coins in an old sack and a usable dagger amongst the debris. The remains are years old.

Continuing onward, you’ll find a side tunnel leading out of this large cavern not too far past where you encountered the Cave Fisher. You’ll get the feeling that you’re being watched from above by the Cave Fisher. You’ll occasionally catch a glimpse of the creature and quickly realize that there are at least 2 of them here, one on each side of the cavern.

About 120’ past the side passage, the cavern ends and a second tunnel leads away. Both tunnels roughly lead off in the same direction and are about 8-10 wide natural openings.

Grondar:

Grondar is pleased that neither of his friends were harmed by their fall. Whether his smile is due to that or the tangle Farian and Senoia have gotten themselves into is unknown.

Salem's advice is good and Grondar avoids going to close to the ledge on either side of the cavern. When she calls him over, he accepts the ring and examines it carefully. Davris. "This was one of our own, and one who had been bonded to a mate. Perhaps he fell afoul of the cave fisher or some other predator. May he rest easy here in the bones of the world."

As they work their way toward their end of the cavern, Grondar keeps his eye out for the cave fisher's return. It does, and it eventually becomes apparent that there are more than one.

One tunnel is passed, and a second is found as they reach the end of the cavern. Grondar moves over to Salem. "Well, that's two tunnels. You think Farian and Senoia found any? We should regroup before deciding on our next move."

Turning, Grondar heads back toward their entry point, relighting torches as needed as he goes. "We'll need to deal with those cave fishers eventually, but as long as we're careful, we can probably wait until we can return with a larger force."

“Just me bum.” Farian says rising rubbing his arse lightly. “But, I am no worse for ware.”

With the danger passed for the moment, Farian goes about his job and begins to look for a way out. Walking for a time he spots a cavern then another further down. Upon seeing this Farian drops to a knee gently picking up any loose gravel or dirt in his hand and lightly rubbing it in his fingers.

Farian will do a Detect Noise check on the first entrance, then if time do the second.

The large cavern the dwarves have descending into appears to continue several Cave Fishers, at least two different ones have been seen thus far. Three exits have been found in the cave and Farian and Salem examine both of them.

Farian examines the ground near the southern most exit. There is some loose dirt and gravel, but not much to leave any good footprints behind. It’s hard to tell if anyone passed this way recently or not. No noises out of the ordinary are heard. Occasionally the dripping of water echoes far off in the distance.

In the northern portion of the cavern, Salem Ironring examines the other two exits. He closely examines the passages, looks down them and listens for anything out of the ordinary.

“Its hard to say how long its been since someone has passed through here,” Salem notes. “I can only hear typical underground noises. Neither tunnel is more appealing than the other at this point.”

The dwarves have explored the large cavern and found it to be empty save for some Cave Fishers. Those can be avoided now that you know they are there. It is decided to explore down the middle tunnel, the one closest to where the dwarves descended into the cavern.

Farian and Salem lead the way down the passage. The passage winds its way about sixty feet through the earth before it intersects with a second passage going to the dwarves left and right. The first passage ends at this point. The floor of the second passage is mostly dirt and there are numerous footprints here. The footprints are smaller, compared to a dwarf and thinner.

“Elfin, I’d wager,” Salem observes studying the footprints. “There’s nothing natural down here to wipe away traces of these footprints. They could be hours old or years. Depends how often these tunnels are used.”

It appears that a large party passed this way at some time in the past. Some of the footprints were stepped on by others suggesting many travelers among the group. The travelers came from the right hand tunnel to the dwarves and proceeded down the left passage.

Nothing out of the ordinary is heard or seen down either passage. Just the quiet sounds of the Underdark and the occasional drip of water.

"What say we split up as before? Farian, you and Senoia take the right and Salem and I will take the left. Return here if you find a cavern or junction."

It seems odd to think that there might be elven tracks down here. They're not usually given to travelling underground.
