Cynalon Knights #5

The gates of hell have been opened and one of its most powerful denizens has come forth! A pit fiend has emerged from the stomach of the huge Hextor statute. The fiend is quickly driven back between a combination of spells and Oran tossing his Firehammer.

Down on the Hellpit floor the struggle continues. Sir Acerion sits up as if in confusion. He retrieves his Holy Weapon from Xanathom’s corpse. Then, inexplicably, Sir Acerion begins to move away from the area. He circles out around the base of the pyramid, seemingly moving towards the Hellpit!

“Sir Acerion?”, Crysania calls out in confusion. Puzzled, the Priestess of Heironeous chases after Acerion. “Where are you going?”

The two free moving Battle Golems slowly change course as their target is on the move. Sir Alon stabs at the golem closest to him with his enchanted longsword. Oran assists Sir Alon by tossing his Firehammer. It strikes the Hextor battle golem square in the chest, but seems only to so superficial damage.

Baron Validar continues his assault on the other battle golem. Each hit does just a little bit more damage to the construct. Blod assist as best he can, but his attacks seem almost ineffectual.

Serena watches from a safe distance, her body still ablaze with green fire.

The golem that Baron Validar was battling intercepts Sir Acerion. The Paladin of Heironeous lashes out with his holy weapon. Two large gashes appear in the golem’s chest and small hunks fall off, but the golem remains functioning. It catches Sir Acerion with a longsword. The wound is nasty, but not immediately life threatening.

Crysania catches up with Sir Acerion once more. She stands behind the knight and chants the words to yet another healing spell. Sir Acerion soon feels more vitality running through his veins.

The second Hextor Golem has passed Sir Alon and catches up to Crysania. It stabs at the priestess with four blades just as she completes her healing spell! Badly hurt and bloodied, Crysania falls to her knees under the onslaught.

While all of this is going on, you can hear Lord Sharadin shouting from overhead.

“There’s another one!”, the archwizard manages to say before he is enveloped in a second ball of fire!

Looking back at the Hextor statue you can see another Pit Fiend emerging from its belly!

At the same time you see a very strange sight overhead. Gorso is now visible and has his large hands locked around Drakkimor’s neck! The figures are flying towards the Hellpit!

GM Notes:

The first pit fiend remains out of sight for those on the ground. The second is standing in the opening the first one made in the statue. The combat map has been updated.

The fighting between the other group and the fire giants continues on the far side of the room. You’re too involved in your own struggles to keep track of what is going on down there.

Hit Points:

Acerion - 39 of 57
Blod - 18 of 56
Crysania - 24 of 84
Oran - 92 of 102

Sir Acerion:

Acerion is making his way towards the flames. He hears Crysania's call but doesn't pause to answer. He is aware that the Golems are closing in on him, which suits the paladin fine as he doesn't want to have to chase them down.

Clenching his teeth through the pain, he feels it wash away as Crysania heals him. "Thank you once more Crysania," Acerion replies, however she doesn't say anything. "Crysania...?"

The second Hextor Golem has passed Sir Alon and catches up to Crysania. It stabs at the priestess with four blades just as she completes her healing spell! Badly hurt and bloodied, Crysania falls to her knees under the onslaught.

"No!" Acerion yells as he turns, seeing Crysania fall to her knees. Stepping around her, Acerion knows he is leaving his back open to the one he was fighting, but he needs to draw this Golem's attention.

"It's me you want!" he howls at the Golem who struck Crysania. Acerion moves up to it and swings his holy axe in vicious arcs in front of himself, hoping to sweep away any attacks directed at him or, better yet, slice deeply into the construct and destroy it.

Serena:

Much to her surprise, the number of human foes we are facing has evaporated. The Fire Aura covering her body is not longer helpful in the battle. In fact it is now a hindrance. Serena will dispel her magical aura of flames and then rush to assist the others. From a distance it appears that Crysania is going to need healing.

A turning point...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

Continuing to follow the slow-moving construct around, Validar slowly is damaging the creation of the Hextorites. As the battle continues, Sir Acerion is on the move. The Battle Golem moves in on Acerion and the paladin slashes it with his axe, causing huge hunks of metal to go flying. the Golem retaliates, further wounding the chosen of Heironeous.

The Baron is not sure why Acerion is moving away from the Pit Fiend. Unless there is another foe or another danger. Validar cannot be sure, but he seems to be headed to the firepit. Crysania seems to echo the same thought.

Validar realizes that Sir Acerion is one of the keys to this battle and his special aura is certainly a boon to anyone in close proximity. Things are continuing to happen. Crysania arrives to further heal Acerion. She too understands that he is necessary for them to win this battle and that he can do the most damage to their enemies. But she is wounded badly by the other Battle Golem.

While all of this is going on, you can hear Lord Sharadin shouting from overhead.

“There’s another one!”, the archwizard manages to say before he is enveloped in a second ball of fire!

Looking back at the Hextor statue you can see another Pit Fiend emerging from its belly!

Validar takes the time to look, since his foe is not only slow-moving, but not a direct threat with its attention on others fully. Sure enough, another Fiend is on the scene. Validar had heard stories that they could bring others of their kind to a battle. There is a good side to that happening. Clearly they hurt the first Pit Fiend enough that it felt threatened enough to require assistance. They have a good chance to not only win this fight, but to bring an end to the Hextorite influence in this part of the world today.

With the King and the others engaged with the Fire Giants, their groups need to hold their own against the Pit Fiends and end the nuisance of the Battle Golems. Further, overhead, something is controlling Drakkimor's bodyguard and causing him to lash out at the mage. They certainly need the mage's abilities to win this battle.

Validar shouts over the roar of the battle. "Someone must stop the Half-Ogre from killing Drakkimor! He sees to be under some sort of mind control!"

However, Acerion turns his attention from his advance towards the pit and turns to face the Battle Golem that attacked Crysania.

Validar is a little surprised that his attention is directed back towards the Golem. Still destroying them will make things much easier here. Validar will continue his battle with the Battle Golem he has been attacking and will try to stay close to Acerion for mutual protection. Validar would like to see the Battle Golems dropped, but the Pit Fiends are the main threat.

"Try to strike those Fiends!" Validar will shout. "The Golems are an annoyance that we can destroy here. Concentrate any attacks on the Fiends!"

If the Fiends move close enough for Validar to attack, then he will certainly do so. Otherwise, he will continue to remain near Acerion and smash the Battle Golem until it is destroyed.

Post Continued:

A second Pit Fiend has emerged form the giant Hextor statue! The innate ability of these two monsters has already come into play. Somehow, the half-ogre Gorso is being dominated by one of the Pit Fiends. He’s choking Drakkimor while flying towards the fiery hellpit!

Those on the ground have their own problems. Two of the Hextor Battle Golems are closing in on Sir Acerion. One wounds him and Crysania of Heironeous heals the paladins’ wounds once more, but at a terrible price. She left herself open for an attack by the other golem. Bloodied and wounded, Crysania falls to her knees.

Enraged at this, Sir Acerion pivots and faces the second golem. His Holy Axe wildly lashes out twice, shattering one of the golems longswords in the process. Two deep cuts are made into the golem with the Axe of the Valorous, but yet it keeps coming. Three longswords slice at Sir Acerion, but none of them hit their target.

Sir Alon continues the assault on the golem battle Sir Acerion, but his weapon does only slight damage to it. Down on the ground, Crysania casts another healing spell and her wounds close in response.

The first golem slowly moves after Sir Acerion. Baron Validar continues his assault on the construct. After repeated hits from his magical longsword and mace, the golem breaks up and falls to the ground in pieces!

The Baron’s victory is a short-lived one. Suddenly, another Wall of Fire springs into existence! This one is circular and it seems to be centered on Sir Acerion. The heat pours in towards the center of the wall and everyone inside feels it.

Blod was unfortunate enough to be in the path of the Wall when it first appeared. The large warrior screams as the fire sears is body and those looking in that direction see him fall outside of the wall as it comes into being.

Oran had been taking aim on the Pit Fiend standing inside the statue when the Wall of Fire sprang into existence. With his target lost, Oran flings it at the face of the remaining Battle Golem. The nose is busted off and yet the golem continues to move.

Outside the Wall of Fire, Serena dispels her Fire Aura as it is no longer useful. The Priestess of Mystra can’t help but see Blod go down from the Wall of Fire forming on top of him. He lies in front of the Wall of Fire unmoving.

Overhead, Serena hears more screaming. Gorso is continuing to strangle Drakkimor and the pair fly into the Hellpit! Lord Sharadin attempted to Dispel the effect on Gorso, but failed. Their forms are quickly engulfed in the red-hot ash and disappear from sight!

GM Notes:

The combat map has been updated. The Wall of Fire effectively blocks you from seeing anything else going on in the Hellpit. It was centered on Sir Acerion, and it is larger than the magic resistant sphere that surrounds the knight. Thus the Wall of Fire was not subject to a Magic Resistance check. The heat it generates is non-magical in nature. (The magic is in the creation and maintenance of the wall.) There is no place inside the wall where you can escape the damaging heat, but those near the middle will take less damage.

Hit Points:

Acerion - 34 of 57
Alon – 114 0f 120
Blod - -2 of 56
Crysania - 46 of 84
Oran - 86 of 102
Serena - 41 of 50
Sharadin - 67 of 96
Validar – 72 of 76

Serena:

“Goddess no!” Serena cries out as things happen in rapid succession about her. First the large simple-minded warrior named Blod goes down as a Wall of Fire forms around him.

After removing her Fire Aura, Serena begins to move in his direction, but is distracted again as Gorso flies overhead and appears to be strangling Drakkimor at the same time! Even worse, she thought she heard talk about there being a second pit fiend!

First things first. Serena advances on the Wall of Fire and will attempt to Dispel it. Next she’ll examine Blod to see if he is dead. If he still lives she’ll convert her Burning Hands spell into a Cure Light Wounds and heal him.

A turn for the worse...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

The Pit Fiends remain far enough away that Validar is unable to engage them without disengaging from the current battle. He also thinks to himself that in this current situation, the magickal protection around Sir Acerion from the Shield of Justice is worth having until the manage to finish the attrition of the lower enemies.

Since the Fiends have been relatively ineffectual to this point, Validar is certain that the action of eliminating the Battle Golems will allow them to concentrate on the Fiends as one, which should give their group the advantage.

Unable to attack another enemy, Validar continues his frustrating attack against the Battle Golem. Now smashed and rended by Sir acerion as well, the Battle Golem finally comes to pieces under the repeated attacks of the Baron. It is a muted satisfaction that Validar finally feels when he sees the construct go down. But that leaves one to go.

Suddenly another Wall of Fire springs into existance right on top on Validar and his friend Blod. Looking around, it is a circle that surrounds them and clearly it is not from one of them as the fire burns in their direction. Blod goes down screaming in pain from the sudden flames. Blod is lost from sight as he falls away from the Wall of Fire, the flames obscuring sight beyond.

Now it is hard to determine what is happening outside the Wall of Fire. There is a slight advantage in that they cannot be seen while in here, but that doesn't mean they cannot be targeted by a ranged spell or worse. Also they have no idea what is happening outside the circle of fire.

Validar will move to attack the remaining visible Battle Golem, staying close to Sir Acerion as well and will try to stay away from the fire as much as possible. Unless a better alternative presents itself, Validar will work on destroying this Battle Golem next. It will only help them in the long run.

"Sir Acerion! Is there another threat?! You moved toward the Fire Pit and away from the Fiends with some purpose and now we are trapped in this Wall of Fire! Do you have some knowledge we should know?!" Validar will shout over the rage of battle, hoping to get some insight as to Sir Acerion's sudden movement a moment ago.

"If not, let us destroy this Golem and then move on the Fiends, before they weaken us further!"

Sir Acerion:

Enraged at this, Sir Acerion pivots and faces the second golem. His Holy Axe wildly lashes out twice, shattering one of the golems longswords in the process. Two deep cuts are made into the golem with the Axe of the Valorous, but yet it keeps coming. Three longswords slice at Sir Acerion, but none of them hit their target.

Acerion lets out a small breath of relief as he has drawn attention to himself and off of Crysania. Hopefully this will give her time to recover and re-enter the fray or heal her wounds.

"Well done," he calls out to Validar after hearing the construct collapse. Still the paladin's thoughts are grim for this is taking far too long. He wanted to close the distance to the pit faster than this, but it seems their foes might be sensing his intentions.

Clenching his teeth against the increased heat, Acerion hears Validar's questions. "Not a threat, but rather an ally," Acerion replies. "While I hovered on death's door moments ago, a voice whispered in my ear. I believe the planar barriers are weaker at the hell pit and it is only from there where I can bring across my father."

Letting that sink in, Acerion continues as he raises his axe once more against the golem, "It is taking longer than I anticipated though to even reach the pit. The toll is becoming very heavy for this gamble. However, unless we have some way to permanently ground those fiends, they will continue to harry us at range. I am unable to do any damage at a distance, so our best bet might be to continue back and link up with the King and the others if nothing else than for a stronger, renewed push."

"Well done," he calls out to Validar after hearing the construct collapse. Still the paladin's thoughts are grim for this is taking far too long. He wanted to close the distance to the pit faster than this, but it seems their foes might be sensing his intentions.

Validar does not reply except for a frustrated grunt. "That is one down," the Baron thinks. "But it took so long." They had been winning this battle quite handily until the second Fiend arrived. Since then, they have been on the defensive somewhat, or at least had their offensive assault blunted.

Then the Wall of fire appears and things have gotten even worse.

"While I hovered on death's door moments ago, a voice whispered in my ear. I believe the planar barriers are weaker at the hell pit and it is only from there where I can bring across my father."

Validar hears the comment from Sir Acerion. "An ally indeed", he thinks to himself. They could use any assistance available to them if they are to succeed in bringing this place down around them once and for all time. "Such an ally would be helpful to our cause. We should work to bringing that to fruition, sooner rather than later."

"Indeed we are beset in many ways, and if we continue to withdraw, then the Fiends will only have more chances to stop us. We must keep up the assault against them, while giving you a chance to try and bring your father to us." Validar doesn't speak the words, but he thinks that obiously Sir Acerion's father must be a powerful ally to risk taking the time to bring here, and as an extra-planar being, that is likely the truth.

"This Wall of Fire only hinders us and makes us vulnerable to further attacks. Let us all move towards the fire pit, even if it means moving through the flaming walls. That way we are closer to your objective as well as moving away from the Fiend's attacks."

Vaidar will move away if everyone else is as well. If not, then as before stay close to Sir Acerion and continue to attack the Battle Golem.

Post Continued:

The Hellpit is living up to its name as several denizens of the lower planes have arrived! Two Pit Fiends have been spotted thus far and both have stayed well out of the heroes’ reach, seemingly content to reign down on them with fiery spells. A Wall of Fire has appeared around Sir Acerion and those closest to him, its heat weakening all.

One Battle Golem remains in pursuit of Sir Acerion. One more strike from the Knight’s Holy Battleaxe puts an end to that threat. However, the group continues to be engulfed by the fiery wall.

Outside the Wall of Fire, Serena of Mystra rushes to assist her companions. Drawing upon her innate Inquisitor powers, she attempts to dispel the wall. With Mystra’s blessing, Serena succeeds!

The Wall of Fire fades away and just in the nick of time. The heroes catch of glimpse of something large flying towards them! There are two of them!

The first of creatures’ barrels into Sir Acerion lashing out at him with its claws, teeth, and tail. The creatures, whatever it is, it’s not a Pit Fiend. It stands nine feet tall and appears superficially like a humanoid gargoyle cover in grotesque scales. The beast has large bat-like wings.

“Cornugons!”, Crysania calls out in recognition. “Elite warriors from hell!”

Sir Acerion endures a claw strike from the devil and returns the favor with his Axe. Crysania and Oran assist the knight and between the three of them the hellspawn goes down. It vanishes in a puff of sulfur.

Another Fireball explodes around Sir Acerion and once more his Holy Weapon coupled with the Shield of Justice hedges out the flames.

The second Corungon attacks Baron Validar. The devil fails to penetrate the warriors’ armor with its claws, barbed tail and teeth. Validar strikes back, slashing the hellspawn twice with his longsword and once with his mace. The devil continues to fight, but Sir Alon lands the final blows. The second Corungon vanishes in a puff of sulfur.

With the combat devils defeated, you’re about to take a quick look around. Drakkimor, Lord Sharadin, and Gorso are no longer in sight. Looking back to the huge Hextor Statue you can see that there are no longer two Pit Fiends hovering overhead near the statute. There are now FOUR of the fiends! As this sinks in there is a flash of light in the belly of the Hextor statue signaling the arrival of a fifth Pit Fiend!

The combat map has been updated. Those who dare to look to the far end of the chamber will note that all the Fire Giants are back near the large door they first entered. Many of the giants have gone down. The others in the rescue party are too far away to get a good look at.

A fistful of Pit Fiends?

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

With talk of a potential ally nearby, the group is caught between the Pit Fiends and the Hellpit, circled by a ringed Wall of Fire.

"This Wall of Fire only hinders us and makes us vulnerable to further attacks. Let us all move towards the fire pit, even if it means moving through the flaming walls. That way we are closer to your objective as well as moving away from the Fiend's attacks."

Just then the Wall of Fire dissipates, obviously the work of one of their mages. Lord Sharadin and the mage Drakkimor are not to be seen, but Serena is nearby and moving closer. At that moment an unearthly shriek catches Validar's attention and he turns.

There two more devils from the hells are approaching at them on leathery wings loking like a couple of very large gargoyles. On flies at Sir Acerion and the other at Validar himself. The creature arrives in a flurry of fangs and claws and even its barbed tail attempts to stab the Baron, but his armor is more than sufficient to protect him. Still armed with his horseman's mace as well as his enchanted longsword, Validar slashes the creature several times and smashes the mce into the ugly creature's face, with a grunt. As another burst of fire erupts around them, Sir Alon ends the creatures existence, as it disappears in a puff of sulphurous smoke.

As that attacks ends, Validar can see that the Fireball did them no damage and that Sir Acerion, along with Crysania and Oran have managed to destroy the other creature. Validar looks around again.

Still the mage Drakkimor and Lord Sharadin are not seen and the Fire Giants have all moved towards where the King's group had arrived. A number of the Giants have fallen it appears. But it is still hard to tell the results of the battle due to the distance and the smoke and fire from the Hellpit. Turning back to the Pit Fiends, Validar sees a disheartening sight.

Near the statue of Hextor, four of the nasty monsters can be seen. Apparently, they are bringing in more and more reinforcements. Validar fights the urge to go charging after them in order to stop more of the creatures arriving. At that moment there is a flash of light and a fifth Pit Fiend appears in the belly of the statue.

With little organization left in the group, Validar deigns to take charge. "Acerion! We will look to bring your reinforcements to the fray. Let us all move towards the Hellpit! Everyone stay in close enough proximity to Sir Acerion to Allow the Shield of Justice to protect you!"

Validar will take the lead in heading towards the Hellpit, but will not stray too far from Sir Acerion. "If anyone can strike at those devils from afar, then let them do so! Try to locate Sharadin and Drakkimor, we could use their magick!" Since Validar is faster than the rest, he will move about the area trying to see where they may be, but never getting outside the Magic Protection Zone of the Shield of Justice and its bearer.

Sir Acerion:

One Battle Golem remains in pursuit of Sir Acerion. One more strike from the Knight’s Holy Battleaxe puts an end to that threat. However, the group continues to be engulfed by the fiery wall.

Finally the golem falls to Acerion's axe. Pulling it free he becomes aware that the wall of fire has also been dispelled. However, as the flames fade away, something large is immediately upon him!

Sir Acerion endures a claw strike from the devil and returns the favor with his Axe. Crysania and Oran assist the knight and between the three of them the hellspawn goes down. It vanishes in a puff of sulfur.

The Cornugon slams into Acerion, raking him with a claw and spinning him about. Using the momentum, Acerion spins with his axe and catches the devil as it was about to turn to face him once more. Crysania and Oran quickly fall upon it and the devil is defeated about the same time as the one attacking Validar is dispatched.

Another Fireball explodes around Sir Acerion and once more his Holy Weapon coupled with the Shield of Justice hedges out the flames.

Acerion is getting used to fire exploding around them. Thankful of the magical protection, the paladin spies four... no five.. of the Fiends now at the statue!

With little organization left in the group, Validar deigns to take charge. "Acerion! We will look to bring your reinforcements to the fray. Let us all move towards the Hellpit! Everyone stay in close enough proximity to Sir Acerion to Allow the Shield of Justice to protect you!"

The paladin nods grimly, hoping the gamble pays off. Still, the protection that the Shield and axe are offering gives them the best chance to reach the pit and maybe also determine how the King fares. Not being able to add anything into a combat that is ranged, Acerion will move straight towards the flames, keeping aware of any enemies that may come close enough for his axe to bite.

The heroes’ plight seemingly continues to grow worse! There are now five Pit Fiends in the Hellpit, and seemingly another arrives every minute! The combined monsters lash out with their innate fiery magicks while summoning other devils to do their bidding. Thanks to the combined protections of Sir Acerion’s Axe of the Valorous, bolstered by the Shield of Justice, the creatures’ fireballs have yet to do harm.

After repelling a pair of Cornugons, Baron Validar takes command and orders everyone to stay near Sir Acerion for their protection and that the group advances towards the Hellpit. Sir Acerion was alerted while hovering near death, that potential assistance awaits them there.

Sir Alon agrees with the decision.

“Go Sir Acerion! We’ll keep these devils off your back!” The leader of the Order of the Griffon turns to face the enemy. “None will get past me while I yet draw breath!”

Serena had started to move towards the unmoving Blod, but Baron Validar’s command stops her.

“Drakkimor is no more,” the follower of Mystra calls out. “He and his servant dived into the Hellpit and were gone! I saw Lord Sharadin fall from the sky a short distance from here. I’ll check on him!”

The Priestess begins to run and aided by her Boots of the Fox, moves much faster than what should normally be possible. A few dozen yards away, Lord Sharadin is found on the ground, his body wracked by terrible pain!

The news of Drakkimor’s death hits Crysania hard, but she continues on with the group. More Cornugons rush the group, seemingly flying in from every direction! The heroes’ weapons lash out against the invaders, downing some of the new arrivals, but not all. The devils tear into the heroes and blood is spilled.

Just as Sir Acerion is approaching the fire pit, three Pit Fiends appear before him to block the path! The monsters lash out at the Knight, slowing his progress.

Anger and tears clear in her face, Crysania gathers palatable power about her. “I’ve been waiting for you bastards to get close enough! Now go back to hell!”

Much like she did back when you first met the Priestess of Heironeous, Crysania unleashes a Holy Word. The Word of Heironeous is felt here in the heart of Hextor’s stronghold. Any and all devils within thirty feet of the priestess vanish in a puff of sulfur!

Crysania herself collapses from the effort. Oran rushes to attend to her.

Badly wounded, Sir Acerion stumbles the last few steps to the Hellpit with Baron Validar’s help and calls out his father’s name. Nothing happens at first, but then the embers before Acerion begin to bubble. Then a section of the Hellpit erupts like a miniature volcano! A wave of almost unbearable heat rushes out, sapping the strength of all who are close.

At Sir Acerion’s call, a portal to the Plane of Elemental Fire has been opened! What at first appears to be a winged man comes flying up from the portal. He hovers for a moment to take in the scene.

The man has dark brown skin, jet-black hair, and piercing green eyes. White, angelic wings grace his back. He is unmistakably muscular and yet possesses an almost unearthly beauty. A great metal rod rests in the being's hands.

More similar-looking creatures erupt from the portal and fly into the chamber. A squad of Monadic Devas has arrived! The angels move to counter the devils, while the first one lands before Sir Acerion and helps him rise.

“You have done well, my son,” the angel tenderly says. “Our master is most pleased.”

The angel waves his hand and casts healing magic upon Sir Acerion, restoring him to peak fitness. But the magic has an unexpected affect on those within range of the Shield of Justice. The healing magic restores all present to full health!

“But this is not over with just yet,” the angel continues. “As long as Hextor’s statue stands, more Pit Fiends will arrive. We cannot destroy it until you free the prisoners underneath it. Now go! We’ll try to hold the devils off of you!”

Planar War...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

Sir Alon agrees with the decision. “Go Sir Acerion! We’ll keep these devils off your back!” The leader of the Order of the Griffon turns to face the enemy. “None will get past me while I yet draw breath!”

With Sir Alon guarding the rear, the group sets out towards the Hellpit, with Validar in the lead. Serena can be seen approaching them, apparently heading for the fallen Blod.

“Drakkimor is no more,” the follower of Mystra calls out. “He and his servant dived into the Hellpit and were gone! I saw Lord Sharadin fall from the sky a short distance from here. I’ll check on him!”

The surprising news hits the Baron and looking at the fiery pit, he does not doubt Serena's words that Drakkimor and Gorso are no more. It would take some unworldly power to survive immersion in that inferno. The Fiends took advantage of Drakkimor's weakness which was relying on such a weak-minded bodyguard and turned that against him. A lesson to be learned.

As they continue to move on, Validar can see that Serena has located the fallen Lord Sharadin. Hopefully, his abilities can be added to their cause once more. But then more of the Corungon devils begin to swarm at the group. Validar hacks away with his enchanted longsword and mace and kills one of the creatures. Some of the enemies are destroyed by the group, but some remain and the battle rages. Once more Validar's armor protects him from further injury, but the attack delays their advance. The group cuts a hole through the devils, giving Sir Acerion a chance to move to the pit's edge.

In desperation, three of the Pit Fiends materialize before them, barring the way. They strike, wounding the paladin of Heironeous severely. Validar downs another of the Corungons which had been wounded and moves toward Acerion's side to face the enemy. "Now we will have a chance to send you back to your realm, devils. You shall not stand against us!"

At that moment, Crysania lashes out from her grief and pain and screams! The Holy Word, much like it did to the orcs in Corunglain, descimates the devils and they all vanish in sulphurous stench. Crysania collapses from the effort. But now the way is clear!

As Sir Acerion staggers forward, Baron Validar comes in and takes him under his shoulder. The last few steps are slow, but their target is just ahead. Sir Acerion calls out a word, apparently a name and after a moment, the pit starts to bubble. Validar looks around to make sure nothing else is approaching, his sword still brandished in his right hand.

Suddenly, there is an eruption from the Pit, sending them all to the ground under a wave of intense heat and flames. Validar regains his feet quickly, ignoring the pain from the flames, ready for the worst, but sees an angelic being hovering before them.

With a wave of the Deva's hand, all of their wounds are healed. Validar feels in peak shape again, none the worse the wear for the flame explosion. Apparently, their attempt was successful. The battle seems to be favoring them this day.

“But this is not over with just yet,” the angel continues. “As long as Hextor’s statue stands, more Pit Fiends will arrive. We cannot destroy it until you free the prisoners underneath it. Now go! We’ll try to hold the devils off of you!”

"Indeed!", Validar responds. "Let us move as he says. The advantage is ours and soon we will know ultimate victory!" Validar leads the way back in the other direction, once more. He will move at his full speed this time, confident that the squad of Devas will be enough to control the two Pit Fiends and that he can handle any of the lesser devils that might arrrive. He will move around the pyramid on the left and head for the prisoners as fast as he can, sword and shield at the ready.

Sir Acerion:

Just as Sir Acerion is approaching the fire pit, three Pit Fiends appear before him to block the path! The monsters lash out at the Knight, slowing his progress.

Anger and tears clear in her face, Crysania gathers palatable power about her. “I’ve been waiting for you bastards to get close enough! Now go back to hell!”

With his remaining strength, Acerion smiles at the effects Crysania's anger have against the fiends. They truly had no chance against such holy power.

Acerion takes the offered help without a word. There is no need for them between the two friends at this moment. All have them have risked much for this gamble, and Acerion does not want to let any of them down.

At first, calling out his father's name seems to have no effect. Normally, the paladin wouldn't expect anything different. He wouldn't expect his father, or anyone else, to merely step through such a hellish pit. A moment later though, his assumption was correct, the planar barriers were indeed weaker here.

“You have done well, my son,” the angel tenderly says. “Our master is most pleased.”

"It does these weary eyes good to see you again after so long, father," Acerion replies. "It swells my heart knowing that Heironeous may smile this day."

"Indeed!", Validar responds. "Let us move as he says. The advantage is ours and soon we will know ultimate victory!" Validar leads the way back in the other direction, once more. He will move around the pyramid on the left and head for the prisoners as fast as he can, sword and shield at the ready.

Suddenly, everything is washed from Acerion. The weight of the wounds and the heat vanish and the paladin feels as if awakening from a long, restful sleep.

"We will finsh this, of that you can be sure!" Acerion replies, his determination renewed with the shifting of the tide of battle. He heads out with Validar, confident that his father and his allies will hold the fiends at bay. However, their remaining task may not be so easy, so he keeps his axe at the ready and his eyes alert and moving.

The tide of battle has turned once more. Sir Acerion has reached the Hellpit and upon uttering his father’s name has opened a portal to the Plane of Elemental Fire! There, waiting for the opening is a squad of Monadic Devas under the command of Acerion’s father. These creatures, Aasimon by race, are the servants and messengers of the Gods of Good. Monadic Devas are warriors among their kind and they are ready to do battle!

The angelic beings fly forth to confront the Pit Fiends and the other hellspawn they have summoned this day. The fiery attacks of the Pit Fiends holds no fear to these beings that can exist within the Plane of Elemental Fire. The Devas lash out with their iron rods, each blow accompanied by the sound of bones shattering under their might.
"It does these weary eyes good to see you again after so long, father," Acerion replies. "It swells my heart knowing that Heironeous may smile this day."
“While you may not have seen me, my eyes have been upon you, my son,” the leader of the Devas states with pride. “You’ve done us all proud.”

Crysania regains her senses after being Healed by the Deva. The Priestess blinks her eyes a few times as if unable to believe what she is seeing.

“You!”, she calls out in amazement upon seeing Sir Acerion’s extra-planar father. “At long last we actually meet in person.”

Crysania steps up to the Deva as one would approach a long-lost friend.

“Well met, Crysania,” the Deva answers in tone a mentor would take. “Our sympathy for your loss this day, but much may still be gained. Grieve for the fallen but be proud of your accomplishments. A major blow against the enemy has been struck this day!”

The Deva takes flight to aid his comrades, while the heroes rush back to free the prisoners. Occasionally those making the journey need to avoid a fiery outburst of magic, but for the most part the passage back to the cell is uneventful. Sir Alon joins with Baron Validar, but is quickly left behind. Along the way, Validar notes that Blod is rising to his feet once more. He is still badly wounded, but no longer in danger of dying. Aided by Serena, Lord Sharadin comes forth as well.

Baron Validar reaches the cell first. The cell door has a simple latch on the outside that needs to be released for the door to open. Inside, the Baron can see the Duke of Corunglain and his immediate family.

“You have my eternal thanks,” the Duke calls out as the cell is opened.

The battle seems to be winding down now. A few of the Devas hover near the belly of the Hextor statute, awaiting the next Pit Fiend to arrive. Others have gone to assist against the Fire Giants. All the occupants of the cell are released and the group moves away from great statue.

Once everyone is safely away, the Devas concentrate on the statue’s legs. They strike with their great iron rods, breaking the statue at its weakest point. The giant statue of Hextor teeters for a moment and then falls forward! It lands partially on the pyramid, shattering the altar there. Much dust is kicked up from the collapse and broken masonry litters the landscape.

Not long after that, four people come rushing up to you. It is the King, Dame Sharl, Silvarn, and the Lady Salavarian. They defeated the giants and the rest of their group has already retired into the Stone House.

“We are victorious!” The King declares. “I am extremely proud of the efforts we put forth this day. It shows what we Cynalonians can do when we put our mind to it!”

Dame Sharl greets Acerion’s father like an old friend. Much like Crysania, she is pleased to finally meet the Deva.

Lady Salavarian opens up the Stone House and the rescued prisoners go inside.

Their task, done, the majority of the Deva’s return to the Hellpit and vanish back inside. Sir Acerion’s father lingers behind.

“This is a great victory,” the Deva states. “But do not become complacent. There are even greater troubles to face in the future. But for this day, you may celebrate. Do not linger here long. This stain to all things good must be removed permanently!”

You’ve scored a major victory! Xp’s will be updated during the week.

You have time to speak to Sir Acerion’s father further should you so desire. (How about a name for your dad, Acerion?)

You may also speak to any of the others present. There’s also the matter of rescuing the others waiting above you and the small horde of magic items now scattered across the Hellpit floor.

Now what?

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

With the arrivals of the Monadic Devas and their leader, Sir Acerion's other-planar father, the battle seems to have turned. The Pit Fiends have already been reduced by more than half their number and the minions of Hextor all lay dead or dying about the floor.

Crysania seems to also be familiar with Sir Acerion's father and the two exchange greetings. After an exchange of pleasantries, the Deva takes wing and the end of the battle commenses.

Validar is quite confident by this time that there is little overall danger to him, as the Pit Fiends are on the run and even should they seek to physically block his progress, the devils can be dealt with. In moments, the Baron has crossed the floor back towards the prisoner cells. In doing so he saw Sir Alon, still holding his own on the battlefield, and his friend Blod, felled during the earlier fight, as well regain his feet and join the final moments.

Confident that victory is at hand, Validar reaches the cell and throws open the door keeping the prisoners in check.

Baron Validar reaches the cell first. The cell door has a simple latch on the outside that needs to be released for the door to open. Inside, the Baron can see the Duke of Corunglain and his immediate family.

“You have my eternal thanks,” the Duke calls out as the cell is opened.

"It is good to see that you are all still well," Validar responds. "The King is here and with him the Stone Cube to transport all of you to safety. Come, let us move away from this place, as it is going to be destroyed!" Validar wil lead the others away and towards the far entrance where the King is still doing battle with the Fire Giants. He keeps his eyes peeled for any enemy, but only one straggling devil manages to enter his path and Validar slashed the fiend, sending it away in a puff of sulphur.

As Validar continues to lead the others away, he looks back to see that the Devas have controlled the area around the statue. Another Pit Fiend appears and at once he is smitten by their powerful rods. The beast is there only a moment before being forcibly sent back to its own domain. That done, the Devas then smash the statue at its legs and it comes crashing down with incredibly destructive results.

The statue crashes into the pyramid and the altar and as a tremendous roar fills the chamber, dust rises from the ground in a huge wave. Validar ducks his head and averts his eyes, covering his helmet with his cloak. A few moments later, the dust begins to settle, covering everything nearby with a light coating. As Validar looks around, he sees no more of the devils or fiends and it seems the battle with the Fire Giants has ended as well. Surprisingly, all seems strangely quiet for a moment. A few fires still burn and the roar of fire from the Hellpit can be heard, but little else. "We have carried the day decisively," Validar says to himself, proudly.

"I thank you for the opportunity to serve Cynalon this day and assist in the defeat of our hated enemy. This will be a day that the bards sing about for many ages to come. You have led us well this day, my King," Validar will say.

As the rescued prisoners are sent into the Stone House, Dame Sharl also greets the head Deva warmly. It seems that many of Heironeous minions have had their eyes on the works of Cynalon for some time. Validar will offer congratulations to those others around the field of battle, especially Sir Alon and his friend Blod.

By now the main force of the Devas have returned through the planar gate in the Hellpit, but Sir Acerion's father lingers. Validar moves nearby to hear the parting exchange.

“This is a great victory,” the Deva states. “But do not become complacent. There are even greater troubles to face in the future. But for this day, you may celebrate. Do not linger here long. This stain to all things good must be removed permanently!”

"We have but a few tasks remaining to clear this domain of evil, before we can depart. Thank you for your assistance. It has been much appreciated." Once the Deva has departed, Validar will turn his attention to their final tasks. But first, he turns to his friend, Sir Acerion. "Well done, my friend. Your skill and resolve, backed by the power of your weapon and the Shield of Justice, has enable us to stand here victorious this day. I do believe that the enemy has been finally rendered little more than a soulless slug," Validar says with a smile and a tired chuckle. "It will be good to return to our country and to our ladies with news of our thrilling victory."

Validar will approach Silvarn. "We have rescued many prisoners and slaves on our approach to this battleground. They are on the level above us," Validar will say, pointing to the hole in the ceiling over the hellpit. "There are two of my old companions from the Seekers as well as numerous civilians who need our continued help."

That said, Validar will then turn his attention to the horde of magic items strewn about the place. "It would seem to be prudent to reclaim these items. I am certain that many of them were stolen from Cynalonians. Blod, come and assist me in collecting anything that the Hextorites were going to sacrifice. We know not what we might find of value."

If anyone has any suggestions on a quick way to transport the magic items into the Stone House that will be helpful, otherwise, he will look for any sort of chest or cart that could hold the items.

Once completed and the discussions have ended, Validar will enter the Stone Cube. He will sheath his sword and remove his helmet and take one last look around at the battlefield . With a proud smile of satisfaction, the Baron of Pyris will enter the Stone House and await their speedy return to Karns Keep.

Apparently, I was having a senior moment as Acerion's father was named when he appeared earlier in New Frontiers when he met Lyonessa and Ivy in the afterlife. His name is Hasverion.

Quick Comments:
"It is good to see that you are all still well," Validar responds. "The King is here and with him the Stone Cube to transport all of you to safety. Come, let us move away from this place, as it is going to be destroyed!"
“The King? Here?” Duke Corun calls out in disbelief. “I never would have imagined such a thing!”

(The Duke is unaware of what has transpired since his disappearance.)

"I thank you for the opportunity to serve Cynalon this day and assist in the defeat of our hated enemy. This will be a day that the bards sing about for many ages to come. You have led us well this day, my King," Validar will say.
“A leader is only as good as his followers, Baron Validar. You’ve all proven yourself to be exceptional this day.”
"We have but a few tasks remaining to clear this domain of evil, before we can depart. Thank you for your assistance. It has been much appreciated." Once the Deva has departed, Validar will turn his attention to their final tasks.
“Such an incursion of hellspawn could not go unchecked, noble warrior” Hasverion states. “I will wait until you are all safely away before cleansing this place.”
“I will retrieve them before we leave,” Silvarn vows. The silver dragon maiden will take a few moments to speak with Hasverion, although it seems that they are not familiar with each other.

The pain in his body lessening, Lord Sharadin pulls out a dark cloth. “Here, Validar. It’s a Portable Hole. Lay it on the ground and toss in what you find. We’ll identify it later.”

Sir Acerion:

“While you may not have seen me, my eyes have been upon you, my son,” the leader of the Devas states with pride. “You’ve done us all proud.”

Acerion would love to continue speaking with his father, but they must finish their task first. Hopefully there will be another opportunity for them to speak.

Acerion watches as Crysania steps up and speaks with his father as if the two know each other quite well. At first he isn't sure what to make of it, then pieces some if it together given his father's standing with Heironeous. It makes sense that the powerful clerics would know his father.

Acerion stands ready should any of them need assistance. It can not be known what they may have had to endure in these hellish conditions. If everyone is able to move on their own, Acerion will offer protection should anything confront them. However, there is almost nothing left of the enemy, so that concern quickly vanishes.

Given the chance, Acerion introduces Validar to his father formally. "Father, this is Baron Validar, one the most noble and valiant men I have had the honor to call friend. Validar, this is my father Hasverion. He is very close and trusted to Heironeous."

Acerion will also make any other introductions, but knowing time is short, he will keep it brief.

"I can hardly take all the credit, and my actions nearly claimed my life," Acerion replies honestly. "However, the gambit paid off this day and thankfully I was saved from death's door. I do agree that the Shield of Justice played a huge role in all of our survival. Also thank you for believing in me. Normally you are not one to retreat, so in your doing so you must have had tremendous faith in me."

Acerion says the last with a smile, knowing that Validar wished to push forward to confront the Fiends. It probably took great effort for his friend to not do so.

"I do agree it will be most welcome to return to fresh air and once again be in the warm company of such fine ladies," Acerion replies. "I will make sure everyone is settled and help in any other fashion needed so that we can depart from here within moments."

Acerion will find Crysania during the final stages before they depart and express his thanks. "I appreciate the timely save Crysania," Acerion says with a bow and a kiss upon her hand. "Your healing, dedication and determination was instrumental in saving not only my life but in helping us overcome today's difficult trial. I apologize for changing tactics on all of us mid-stride, but it was important I open the gate for our allies," Acerion says the last with a sweeping hand to indicate his father and the departing Devas.

Acerion will also seek out his father one last time before everyone departs. He noticed Dame Sharl speaking with him earlier and did not want to intrude. Clasping wrists with his father and his other hand coming to rest over top, Acerion says, "Again the time draws near for our seperation. I pray that we will someday have the proper chance to spend some time. I appreciate all that you have done for us this day."

Before turning to go, Acerion adds, "There will be a time in the future where it would honor me tremendously if you could attend a gathering I have planned."

Acerion is pretty positive that his father knows exactly what he is referring to, but if not, Acerion will not explain further and let his father wonder. Of course, his own smile may betray his thoughts even though he hasn't spoken the words. If Heironeous can spare his father for that occassion, Acerion would be forever indebted.

After helping gather up everything and everyone, Acerion enters the Stone House. Clasping a hand on Validar's armored shoulder, Acerion shares in his friend's contagious smile, his own thoughts on their deeds today and a woman who is so far away, and yet so very close.

Baron Validar -

"It is good to see that you are all still well," Validar responds. "The King is here and with him the Stone Cube to transport all of you to safety. Come, let us move away from this place, as it is going to be destroyed!"

“The King? Here?” Duke Corun calls out in disbelief. “I never would have imagined such a thing!” (The Duke is unaware of what has transpired since his disappearance.)

"Much has changed since Corunglain was attacked. We not only managed to stem the tide of invasion against your lands, but there is now a new King in the realm. It is King Victor the VIIIth who leads us this day." Validar casts a glance in the direction of the King and his party, but they are too far away and there is too much smoke to see them at the moment. "Cynalon has truly undergone a new rebirth, one punctuated by our rousing victory here today against our hated enemies."

Validar seems Sir Acerion arrive and stand guard as they lead the prisoners away to safety.

"Many thanks for the compliments, my King," Validar says, crossing his fist against his chest in salute. "It will be incredible to tell our people of the success we've had this day."

"We have but a few tasks remaining to clear this domain of evil, before we can depart. Thank you for your assistance. It has been much appreciated."

“Such an incursion of hellspawn could not go unchecked, noble warrior” Hasverion states. “I will wait until you are all safely away before cleansing this place.”

"That is greatly appreciated," Validar says. "The destruction of this den of evil is an event I have dreamt of since my childhood."

Given the chance, Acerion introduces Validar to his father formally. "Father, this is Baron Validar, one the most noble and valiant men I have had the honor to call friend. Validar, this is my father Hasverion. He is very close and trusted to Heironeous."

"Well met," Validar will say. "You have every reason to be proud of your son. He is making quite the name for himself in our kingdom. I am pleased to call him friend."

Silvarn indicates that she will rescue the remainder of their group left above as well as the slaves they rescued. A moment later, the fallen Lord Sharadin, still visibly in pain from the encounter with the Pit Fiends, comes nearby.

The pain in his body lessening, Lord Sharadin pulls out a dark cloth. “Here, Validar. It’s a Portable Hole. Lay it on the ground and toss in what you find. We’ll identify it later.”

"Very good," Validar says simply, as he turns to the task at hand. "Blod, be careful not to take hold of any weapons in case they are cursed. Anything else should not be a problem to simply hold it." Validar lays out the dark cloth and begins to collect the strewn about magick items.

(Whoo hoo! NINTH level!)

"Perhaps not all the credit, but you drew the attention of the enemy giving us near impunity to deal with them. Your armor protected many of us at range as well as yourself and it was your connection to your father and his timely arrival that allowed us to end this battle with much less loss of life than could be expected."

"As for retreating," Validar says with a smile. "I do not consider it a retreat, rather an opportunity to better ensure victory." Validar claps his friend on the shoulder. "Surely had the dowardly fiends dared to risk hand-to-hand combat, I would have rushed into battle and destroyed them by my enchanted sword. Since they robbed me of that opportunity, it was simple logic to follow your suggested course of action. You have proven yourself to be a galant warrior, a true friend. I would follow you as you would me."

"Besides, there were only five of the Fiends at that time. Even if the gambit was not successful, surely we could have carried the day against even eight or ten of their number. This battle was destined to be ours this day and not even the chosen of the vilest slug, Hextor, could hold us from overwhelming victory."

"I do agree it will be most welcome to return to fresh air and once again be in the warm company of such fine ladies," Acerion replies. "I will make sure everyone is settled and help in any other fashion needed so that we can depart from here within moments."

"Yes, indeed." Validar finds himself not wanting to leave the field of battle so quickly, taking a moment to let the lingering effects of their victory set in. Afterall their return home will only take a mere moment. Then he thinks of the Lady Gabriella and he is ready to return.

Post Continued:

The forces of Hextor have been defeated! Some unfinished business is all that is keeps you in the Hellpit.

The priestess Crysania speaks to Hasverion for a time. Acerion’s father has been chosen by Heironeous to oversee the region that includes Cynalon, thus the deva is known to those who are powerful in that faith.
“Well met, Crysania,” the Deva answers in tone a mentor would take. “Our sympathy for your loss this day, but much may still be gained. Grieve for the fallen but be proud of your accomplishments. A major blow against the enemy has been struck this day!”
“That much is true, my mentor,” Crysania agrees. “But I don’t know if I can deal with this loss. My heart is bursting with pride and breaking all at the same time. What do I do now?”

“Perhaps the time has come for you to settle down in one place for a time? There is still much to be done in the Western Kingdom and you will be needed. Whether that be on the battlefield or in the temple is your choice.”

“I will think upon that,” Crysania answers.

Dame Sharl’s meeting with Hasverion is brief, but a pleasant one. The Knight is mildly surprised that Sir Acerion is Hasverion’s father.

“I never made the connection before,” Sharl tells Acerion. “But it was right in front of me the whole time. I can see why the Shield of Justice choose you to carry it. I am both pleased and proud to have you among us, Sir Acerion.”

The prisoners have been freed, among them a haggard looking Duke of Corunglain.
“Much has indeed changed,” the Duke answers in surprise. “I am pleased to know that my ancestral lands are freed from the humanoid hordes. I am also indebted to those who made this happen. But this is not the time or the place to speak of such things. Let us be gone from this nightmarish pit!”

"Many thanks for the compliments, my King," Validar says, crossing his fist against his chest in salute. "It will be incredible to tell our people of the success we've had this day."
“I wonder if one day our deeds will be considered too impossible to have actually happened? I know some of the exploits of my ancestors are difficult to belief to have transpired. But now, I think I know how they feel.”

“You are emerging as a powerful force yourself, Baron Validar. I belief that between the two of you and your companions future bards will have much to say on your exploits. I am pleased that my son has such outstanding friends.”
“I only did what was necessary,” Crysania humbly answers. “The power you wield with your Holy Axe and Shield made it necessary to keep you in the battle. It was only sound tactics and I wholly approve of the outcome.”
Acerion will also seek out his father one last time before everyone departs. He noticed Dame Sharl speaking with him earlier and did not want to intrude. Clasping wrists with his father and his other hand coming to rest over top, Acerion says, "Again the time draws near for our separation. I pray that we will someday have the proper chance to spend some time. I appreciate all that you have done for us this day."
“Someday, my son,” Hasverion promises, “once there is peace in these lands. But through your courage and your faith, you have earned a boon. When you meditate and pray for new spells, you may speak to me and I will answer. It is this intimate contact that I also share with Crysania, Sharl, and all other powerful followers of the Honorable Warrior in this region. Today you have joined those ranks.”
Before turning to go, Acerion adds, "There will be a time in the future where it would honor me tremendously if you could attend a gathering I have planned."
“I wouldn’t miss it for anything. In fact, I was hoping to have the honor of giving the bride away since her own father has passed on. She is a fine woman, Acerion and you would be hard pressed to do better. Indeed, were I still mortal you would have competition for her hand!”

Before departing, Validar, Blod, and some of the others recover the large collection of magic items the Hextorites had been compiling for their grand sacrifice. It will take time to sort through them. Finally, everyone takes their place inside the Stone House, with the exception of Lord Sharadin who has recovered from the Symbol of Pain the Pit Fiends hit him with. With his Polyself spell still active, the Archmage changes into a gargoyle and flies back up the vent above the Hellpit. Hasverion watches Sharadin depart.

Once there, the House is opened once more and Araduin and Dar are there waiting. The slaves rescued are quickly led into the Stone House, but the other two men are not there.

“They only waited a few minutes before running off on their own,” Dar relates. “We couldn’t stop them.”

The Stone House closes once more and outside Lord Sharadin casts his Teleport spell moving all from the Hextor Temple.

Back down in the Hellpit, Hasverion stands before the ranging fire and at his direction the portal to the Plane of Elemental Fire begins to spew forth lava! The fiery liquid burns everything it comes into contact with and quickly floods the Hellpit area. The lava continues to rise and will eventually cover the entire temple, before being drawn back through the portal. To those in New Keln, it will seem as if the earth itself swallowed up the large temple and gladiatorial arena. Only huge pit remains and those remaining followers of Hextor in the city will flee in fear this day.

The doors to the Stone House once more and you’re in the confines of Karn’s Keep. The rescued and the injured are helped out. Numerous clerics are there ready to heal the wounded. You spot the familiar face of Elspeth among them. Lady Gabriella is quickly by Baron Validar’s side making sure that he isn’t injured.

Silvarn seeks out Validar shortly after exiting the Stone House.

“I am about to depart to retrieve your comrades from the Ice Palace,” the elf maiden states. “It is my understanding that wish them brought to Castle Pyris?”

You’ll have some time to unwind from the battle before the King will hold a conference to discuss what to do next. There are many issues to discuss, including the new threat from Ember, the Deville’s situation in Elcadan, and so on.

Now what?

The story comes to a close...

Baron Validar -

Duke Corun:
“Much has indeed changed,” the Duke answers in surprise. “I am pleased to know that my ancestral lands are freed from the humanoid hordes. I am also indebted to those who made this happen. But this is not the time or the place to speak of such things. Let us be gone from this nightmarish pit!”

"It was a surprise to us as well. So I can imagine what you may be thinking," Validar responds. "Recent weeks have been eventful and perhaps no day moreso than this one. Indeed, let us depart from this place and let it be purged from our memories."

King Victor:
"Many thanks for the compliments, my King," Validar says, crossing his fist against his chest in salute. "It will be incredible to tell our people of the success we've had this day."

“I wonder if one day our deeds will be considered too impossible to have actually happened? I know some of the exploits of my ancestors are difficult to belief to have transpired. But now, I think I know how they feel.”

Validar listens to the new King voice his considerations with a new understanding of the legacy that has preceeded him. "More importantly, it continues to show that those exploits were indeed true. And the people of Cynalon will better understand that the legends were true and not just fabricated stories. Too long have our lands been mired in confusion and woe and lack of inspiration. You have a chance to give our people hope of a new way of life and a chance to return to the glory of our past and even beyond. It is an opportunity for greatness."

Hasverion:
“You are emerging as a powerful force yourself, Baron Validar. I belief that between the two of you and your companions future bards will have much to say on your exploits. I am pleased that my son has such outstanding friends.”

"A fine compliment, Hasverion of Heironeus. It is my goal to better the Kingdom as well as my own lands. I must admit that my goals are lofty, but my duty is to Cynalon and to Pyris. But again, thank you for your help this day."

The group enters the store house and Lord Sharadin takes them all up to the level above and to Validar's friends, Dar Thaltus and Araduin.

Once there, the House is opened once more and Araduin and Dar are there waiting. The slaves rescued are quickly led into the Stone House, but the other two men are not there.

“They only waited a few minutes before running off on their own,” Dar relates. “We couldn’t stop them.”

"They made their own decision and there is little we can do about it. Clearly they were not citizens of Cynalon, nor did they believe we could defeat the Hextorites and their allies. It is their decision and their loss."

"As for the two of you, we have much to talk about."

The Stone House closes once more and outside Lord Sharadin casts his Teleport spell moving all from the Hextor Temple.

As always the transportation with the Stone House and eleportation is remarkably fast. One moment they are in Keln and the next they are at Karn's Keep. Validar is one of the last ones to exit the Stone House, allowing the wounded and the civilians, as well as the rescued prisoners to exit first so that the clerics can tend to them.

It is only a moment before he can see the expectant face of Lady Gabriella amongst the crowd. She is upon him in an instant and Validar takes the lovely lady in his arms. "It is good to see you again, my lady." As they separate, Gabriella quickly examines the noble warrior, a look of concern on her face. "I may be covered in dust and singed from the hellpit we encountered, but I have no injuries, my love. We have won a tremendous victory this day, one which shall change the face of Cynalon and eliminate an enemy from hounding us for some time. Come let us retire for a time and I shall tell you about our victory."

Silvarn seeks out Validar shortly after exiting the Stone House. “I am about to depart to retrieve your comrades from the Ice Palace,” the elf maiden states. “It is my understanding that wish them brought to Castle Pyris?”

Validar considers for a moment. "That does seem to be the most prudent decision. We have much to accomplish and Pyris is the seat of that activity for us now."

Serena:

“We have witnessed wonders this day,” Serena says in a whisper as she sees the Deva’s come forth from the fiery pit. The Inquisitor helps Lord Sharadin along and they soon rejoin the others. It seems that the battle has been won.

Serena eyes the handsome Deva as he speaks to many of the others, but she keeps her distance. Her mind can’t help but wonder just what sort of angels the Lady of Mysteries does employ.

The other members of this rescue party arrive and with them come the Stone House. Serena goes inside when directed and upon arriving at Karn’s Keep will convert her remaining spells into healing magic. Once that is done, Serena will go to her chambers to change and freshen up. Then she’ll visit the shrine to Mystra and pray and mediate upon what has transpired.

Baron Validar -

King Victor VIII:
The King smiles broadly. “I think that is why I value your council, Baron Validar. You seem to understand what I face better than most. These are exciting times that we live in. Our destinies are ours alone to forge, for better or worse. We can only hope that we live up to the expectations of those who came before us and that we continue their great work.”

"Thank you, my King," Validar responds. "I have been a voracious student of our history and deeply involved in learning about the workings of our kingdom. And I am proud of being Cynalonian and I am certain that you will be a King we will all have reason to be proud of."

"I do agree that destinies are to be grabbed and fought for and not a matter of pre-determination. I have thought long about mine and that is why I may seem prepared with easy answers. I hope to be a force of good to assist the Kingdom in regaining its former glory as well."

Lady Gabriella:
“I would love to hear all about it, my lord.” Lady Gabriella states. “Let us get you cleaned up and presentable once more. Come we’ll have privacy over here.”

Lady Gabriella will lead Validar to a guest chamber set up for their use during this stay.

"Indeed. In the meantime, allow me to introduce two more of my old Seeker companions: Dar Thaltus and Araduin. They disappeared soon after the seige of Gateway and were found inside the vile temple of Hextor in New Keln," Validar says, indicating the two elves. "Gentlemen, please make yourselves at home. I am sure the hospitality here is quite good. We will talk soon."

Validar takes his betrothed's arm as she leads him to a private chamber. Validar looks about at the size of the place, but the furnishings are normal sized. An odd juxtaposition, he thinks absentmindedly.

Once inside, Validar begins to remove his weapons, shield and tabard first. He discards the burnt and dust-filled garment in a proper manner, folding it and setting it on the fire. It does sport his coat of arms, after-all and is worthy of proper respect. Then he begins to remove his armor, with some help from his lady, as he retells the tale.

"The battle went surprisingly well considering what we were up against. And the final result was as satisfying as we could possibly expect. I had hoped for our assault to be so successful that we were able to somehow destroy or at least damage the Hextorites seat of power and deliver to them a telling blow. Our offensive was all that and more."

"Sylvarn was able to get us very close and with their attention diverted to the sacrifice that they were about to begin, the Slugs were not prepared to stop us. The demons that they had on watch were scarcely a match for our combined might, especially with Sir Acerion wielding the Shield of Justice. We were able to penetrate to their inner sanctum virtually unopposed."

"In doing so, we came across several men who were under the Hextorite's thrall, including my elfin friends, Dar Thatus and Araduin. After freeing them from the mental control that ensnarled them, as well as the other misfortunates that were there continuing to make the vile mind-numbing zonga potion, we located the terrible Hellpit."

"Before that, the King and his group split off as we tried to find the quickest way to rescue the Duke and his family. Our group combined with Drakkimor's band managed to enter the Hellpit from above invisibly. Dar and Araduin remained above with the drugged rescued civilians."

"From there we were confronted not only by Xanathom, the six-armed fiendish leader of the slugs and her numerous priests and lieutenants, but a large group of Fire Giants and Hell Hounds. It looked dire for us initially, but for some reason the giants did not attack when we began our own assault. A fatal decision in the long run to be certain. Sir Acerion confronted Xanathom and managed to slay her, while we systematically defeated the remaining priests and their horrible Battle Golems."

"While we were not without casualties, as the mage Drakkimor and his half-ogre bodyguard were slain by immersion in the Hellpit, we were surprisingly healthy coming through the battle. The healing that Crysania and the Inquisitor, Serena, imparted were quite helpful, as was that from an unexpected ally. But that is getting ahead of the story slightly."

"With most of the Slugs slain and their leader dying, the vile statue of Hextor himself exploded and brought forth a Pit Fiend from its belly. That certainly had me slightly concerned, as the stories of these foul creatures are horrible indeed. I felt that we could destroy it in close combat, but the size of the battlefield made it unlikely that it would allow such a confrontation."

"Still, with magic we managed to quickly knock it from the sky. Only to have a second one appear in the statue's belly moments later. At this point the king arrived to do battle with the Giants and their hounds, which managed to keep this threat from us. However, we were in a defensive mode, trying to destroy the Battle Golems, which are frustrating opponents, and withstand the attacks of the Pit Fiends. They sent fireballs and more devils at us, but to little avail. Sir Acerion's power protected us and we smote the devils who came near us with little difficulty."

"Unfortunately, the tide was slowly turning against us. Drakkimor and Gorso were killed. Blod was felled. Sir Acerion was barely on his feet as they concentrated so much of their efforts against him. Lord Sharadin was knocked from the sky and under the influence of a vile spell. We were going to have to charge the Pit Fiends and force a combat, as more and more kept appearing. At this point, there were no less than five of the terrible fiends and more appearing every minute."

"But Sir Acerion had an unexpected strategy. Since his protective aura existed while he remained alive, I felt that it was worth the trying and indeed it turned out for the best. I have had my suspicions that there was more to Sir Acerion than his considerable powers granted by Heironeous and I was correct. His father is in fact a Deva," Validar pauses, letting that information sink in. "He is an angel of Heironeous. No wonder the Shield of Justice chose Acerion to be the artifact's bearer."

"We fought our way toward the Hellpit and manged to call for Acerion's father. Escorted by a squad of devas, Haverion came forth and in that moment the battle was nearly won. There were only three Pit Piends left by this time and the Devas made short work of them. They also healed us of the fiery wounds we did sustain. We managed to free the prisoners as well as the civilians we rescued and collected a massive amount of magic items that were to be sacrificed."

"Hasverion made certain that the temple would be destroyed, calling on the Plane of Elemental Fire to destroy it after we left. One day I would like to travel to the site to see what remains of the battlefield. All in all a terrific fight and a terrible battle, but one that I felt we were always in control of. My position was one of support for I did not strike many telling blows, although had the cowardly Pit Fiends deined to confront me I am certain I would have been their better. There were fewer losses than I expected for certain and I feel tired, but not overly so. Still it was our greatest victory to date and a resounding defeat of our dire enemy. The Hextorites are not likely to be a major force in this area for many years, decades perhaps. They have been fractured and their upper command destroyed."

"That allows us to turn our attention inward for a time and focus on the restoration and reclaiming of Elcadan, as well as the freeing of Stone Ridge. There is still much to do, but we should be freer to pursue this tasks without one enemy dogging our heels. Still I feel that the Hextorites were only one pawn in this overall conflict that besets Cynalon. There were other factions involved in the attack in Corunglain and there are likely more than that still unseen. We may have only defeated the next enemy of many."

By now, Validar has mananged to remove his battle armor and he begins to clean himself up a bit, washing away the dust and sweat and foul stench from the Hellpit.

"Still, it is good to be back in your presence. The King has briefings and meetings to conduct and to be certain there are many that I would like to conduct myself. We need to acquire for ourselves as many allies as possible. However, I do hope that we will have some few moments to share alone that do not involve strategy sessions, planning offensives, scheming to thwart our enemies or fabricating contingencies."

Eventually, Validar will be refreshed, cleaned and dressed in new clothes. He reattaches his weapon belt as well. "Now I seem to be a bit more presentable."

Conversations to start:
Blod and Zynara to see if they might join our efforts in the West

Dar Thaltus and Araduin to have them join us (more henchmen)

Duke Corun to discuss the situation in his lands, our part in the battles and future alliances and agreements

Silvarn briefly to have the Guardians taken to Pyris

Some training with Sir Alon to justify the gain of High Master status with the longsword

King's meetings

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

These conversations are not in any particular chronological order, but will be fit in as time and people allow.

Blod & Zynara:

Validar will thank his ex-Seeker companion for his assistance in the battle. "You are a fine fighter and a good friend, Blod."

Later, he will meet with both Zynara and Blod, with Gabriella's assistance (if she is amenable).

Validar will once again ask Zynara if she is interested in moving into the Western Kingdom. He will ask what it would take to entice them, from offering the position of High Magister of Pyris to a remodeling of the Mage Guild in Elcadan, from starting a new mage guild to anything else she may think of (or that Gabriella might add).

Serena:
Baron Validar will inquire at some point as to Serena's current plans and also thank her for her involvement in the defeat of the Hextorites.

Dar Thaltus and Araduin:

Validar will approach the elves, either together or individually, and speak with them about their coming plans. "I would like to offer you the opportunity to work with me and to continue to right the wrongs that exist in our lands. There is much to do in our lands, with the reclamation of Elcadan. And I am honor bound to free Stone Ridge as well. I certainly have need of strong allies such as yourself and I can certainly promise that you will not be bored. Coupled with the fact that the Seekers are away on a long ocean voyage, it would give you a chance to continue your adventures."

Silvarn the Dragon:
Silvarn seeks out Validar shortly after exiting the Stone House. “I am about to depart to retrieve your comrades from the Ice Palace,” the elf maiden states. “It is my understanding that wish them brought to Castle Pyris?”

Validar considers for a moment. "That does seem to be the most prudent decision. We have much to accomplish and Pyris is the seat of that activity for us now."

"We will be here for a short time, but certainly will be returning to Pyris as soon as we are able. Please be certain to retrieve any of those who did not go on the assault as well. We will need all of my friends and subordinates in the coming days. Thank you again for your continued assistance in the battles we have faced. I am honored to fight beside you."

Sir Alon:
In between the conversation, negotiations and debriefings, Validar will take some time to engage in a little martial practice with his old mentor Sir Alon.

After the mock combat is completed and Validar sees a couple of tricks and skills that Sir Alon uses more closely, the two have a conversation about the future and their plans.

"I look forward to having the Squire candidates arrive in Pyris, as well as the upcoming meetings with the Order of the Griffon. Although it seems as though there will be plenty of duties to keep us all busy for the foreseeable future. Still, if you could, please keep your time free for sometime in late Spring. Lady Gabriella and I would be most pleased if you could join us for an momentous event, somewhere in that time frame."

"But in the meantime, we have many tasks on a grand scale to complete. Where do your travels take you next, Sir Alon?"

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Sir Acerion:

Acerion will exit the Stone House, helping any of the wounded that may need it. He will see if the clerics need any help. Although the paladin doubts it, he will offer his remaining magical healing should it be necessary.

Afterwords, he will seek to clean himself up and remove his armor. Acerion will don his simple robes and set about cleaning his armor and weapons.

Once that task is finished, Acerion will make it known he is available should anyone have need of him. Otherwise the paladin will go to pray, both in thanks for this victorious day but also in hopes to help those who fell in battle to move on properly.

Baron Validar -

Duke Corun:
Validar will check in with the recovering Duke of Corunglain to see how he is faring, as well as the status of the rest of the rescued nobles.

"I am pleased that everyone made it through their considerable ordeal as well as they did. The situation in Corunglain looked bleak for some time, but now it has been turned in our favor. The invading forces of humanoids have been thwarted, driven back and destroyed. The Forts have been reclaimed and there should soon be progress in recovering Hammerfall."

"In addition, my adventuring group, the Guardians of Light, are currently confronting a stronghold of the Cold Maiden not far from Fort Fletcher, which, when they are successful, should relieve us of some of the oppressive weather we have been having this winter. Coupled with the victory that we have had in New Keln, we have eliminated a potential thorn in the Kingdom's side, including one that has befallen your duchy for some time."

"Rennydale is restored, the humanoid invasion thwarted, the Hextorites smashed, the forts recovered and more progress mounts daily. While we have our own issues to deal with due to the changes in Elcadan, Pyris remains committed to strengthening the power in western Cynalon and we shall continue our efforts to recover the dwarven holds, as well as assist the Lady Ardel to free Ardelphia and all of Stone Ridge."

King's Meetings:
The Baron will make himself available as needed to the King's own meetings while we are here in Karns Keep, as well.

Serena:

Later that evening, Serena has finished up her evening prayers and is heading to the dinning hall for a light meal when she encounters Baron Validar.
Baron Validar will inquire at some point as to Serena's current plans and also thank her for her involvement in the defeat of the Hextorites.
“The Lady has had me travel to this region of the world for a reason, but what that reason is unclear to me as of yet. So until her reasoning’s are made clear, I am free to do as I see fit. I thought I would travel to the various Mystrain Temples and Mage Guilds in this land to examine their states. So the cities of Elcadan, Alexandria, and Kingsport would be among my next destinations. I have a feeling that Elcadan would be next. Just a hunch, not something I can put into words. I am also told that an older temple to the Lady has been unearthed. I would wish to visit that.”

“It was my pleasure to help eradicate such evil. I only wish I could have been more instrumental in their downfall.”

Baron Validar -

Serena:
Later that evening, Serena has finished up her evening prayers and is heading to the dinning hall for a light meal when she encounters Baron Validar.

"Greetings, Serena of Mystra," the Baron will say. "It is good to see you again this evening. Especially under much less pressing terms." Validar and Gabriella had just finished their evening meal together, when Serena arrived. "I would like to present to you the Lady Gabriella Allonica. Gabriella, this is Serena, an Inquisitor of Mystra."

"I am curious, Serena, what are your plans next? Now that we have completed the defeat of the Hextorites, I am curious what your upcoming plans are. Where does your duty take you next?"

“It was my pleasure to help eradicate such evil. I only wish I could have been more instrumental in their downfall.”

Hearing mention of Elcadan gives Validar some interest. Surely it can only help to assemble as many allies as possible, even if only on a temporary basis.

"Elcadan is a place in the midst of serious flux to be certain, Serena. While my father, the Duke, is the ruler of these lands, in truth, we have much to do to recover them. The Merchant Guild leaders are a mixed lot and certainly there are some members or those in their employ who use magick for evil and woe. Coupled with the fact that demons and devils have inhabitied the lands, as well as replacing the former rulers, there is much for which we could use your assistance."

"Elcadan needs to be brought back under proper control both for the stability of the region as well as for the plight of her citizens. We would be quite pleased if you would join us on our journey to Elcadan and assist us in defeating the enemy there."

"As for the mention of the older temple, I believe that perhaps is a place being explored by an associate of mine. Her name is Kharyna and she is a follower of Mystra as well. I understand she was also a pupil of my cousin, the Lady Jallarzi Sallavarian. The location for this site is near the Barony of Stone Ridge. This is a place that we also seek to recover and drive the enemy humanoids from the land. If Kharyna is successful in recovering what she called the Towers of Magic or Gaz's Towers, then with the humanoids destroyed, the region could undergo an influx of great learning and prosperity."

"As for the defeat of the Slugs, we all had our part to play. Mine was also not a major one, but without us, the assault would not have been successful."
