Sir Corley:
Lady Ivy wrote:“Of course, Sir Corley. I would be happy to.”
“My thanks, Lady Ivy. At least we’ll gain some measure of what we are dealing with.”
Lady Argent wrote:“If these are undead we are dealing with, Sir Corley, then someone has to be giving them instructions. They might even be watching what transpires here at the fortress. Also if this is a siege, then at some point we spellcasters are going to have to rest. I think it would be better to allow at least one of us to cast their spells and rest, while the others stand ready. Have a fresh spellcaster available at all times. For one of us to rest without casting those spells that we can would be a waste of a resource.”
“You make a valid point, Lady Argent. We will need to send scouts out once more when conditions are more suitable. For now, I would rather save your spells for when we need them. Yes, it is true that you can rest and regain your magicks, but that would take time. We have to assume that our enemy has spotted you and Lord Chareos during one of your scouting expeditions. They have to conclude we have at least two mages entrenched here. Thus they can use sortie’s to try and make you and Lord Chareos expend your spells and then send a greater force once they know you are resting and studying. In this particular instance, I believe that it is more prudent to have the magicks available at all times.”
Lady Lyonessa wrote:Arriving a little later than most, Lyonessa listens close to what Sir Corley says. She remembers her dealings with the cold and foul creatures within not so long ago, and this seems too familiar. Lyonessa will begin singing, a stirring song to raise morale among those on the wall who will have to face the zombies first should spells and arrows fail to halt their icy advance.
Sir Corley hears Lady Lyonessa’s lovely voice before he spots the bardess. She’s doing her part to help strengthen the fortress defenders resolve. Sir Corley will nod approvingly when their eyes meet.
Grondar wrote:"Very well, Sir Corley. If I may, I'd like to take a moment to collect my crossbow; it won't take long, I promise." If Corley agrees, Grondar will race down to the second level, grab his crossbow and supply of quarrels, and race back.
“Very good.”
Grondar wrote:"That is quite some transformation. It certainly gives her a sizable army to wield in her attack on our fort. I wonder how much of the army she was able to take into her service? It would require immense power to transform it all - perhaps more than even she has access to."
“I cannot say for sure right now, noble dwarf. Even the power of a lesser goddess has to be immense compared to us mere mortals. We have to surmise that she could not ensnare all of the orc forces, but what part she did is unknown. At the very least we have a strong defensive position and the capacity to hold it for as long as necessary.”
Yusef wrote:At such time as Sir Corley seems to have a moment, Yusef will speak up. "Sir Corley? I thought you might want to know about these bottles I carry. Each is enchanted in such a way that, when broken, it will create a small fiery explosion. They can be thrown by anyone. As you are probably aware, it is possible that these servants of the Cold One will be especially susceptible to fire, so they may prove to be a valuable weapon."
“Thank you for this information, Yusef. Indeed, they may come in handy at some point during the battle. But for now we leave them in our arsenal until needed.”
After a moment’s pause, Sir Corley will ask, “Friend Yusef, I am unfamiliar with this magic, but would it be possible to place these bottles inside a barrel of oil and then throw the whole thing down below. If it works, such a thing would make a very nasty weapon.”
Lady Ivy identifies the threat as being undead. Commands are given and they are carried out efficiently. The archers bring down many of the orcs trying to climb up the side of the fortress, and the priests destroy many more. Oil is poured out and lighted, igniting the side of the fortress and destroying the rest. It is all seemingly over for the moment.
Sir Corley will tell Lieutenant Wyndham to keep the alert for another fifteen minutes. If no other hostiles show, then the extra men can go back to their normal duties. He’ll also pass his compliments to the Elf Commander on his groups archery skills.
Lady Lyonessa wrote:By the time Lyonessa begins singing, the initial attack is seemingly over. She knows that it all could change very quickly and so continues to sing. Building upon the success they just had, she hopes the troops will be near invulnerable to whatever attempts to work against them occur next.
After Lady Lyonessa concludes her song, Sir Corley will approach. “Lady Lyonessa, I wish of boon of you if you please. Right now we are in the dark as far as what we are facing. Would you consent to allowing Dusk to fly out and scout the area around the fortress? He need only see what is going on and can stay as far as way as need be. We suspect that unknown beings are controlling this force of undead. We need to find these persons and eliminate them with extreme prejudice. If we can find them, then we can deal with them.”
Lord Chareos wrote:“How large was this force that comes against us?” he asks Sir Corley, hoping they do not have to face another icicle dragon again so soon. The goes on, “If visibility is a problem perhaps a Wall of Fire would lighten the are as well. Not only would it damage those walking toward it but would give our archers more visibility!!”
“That remains unknown, Lord Chareos. Perhaps Lady Lyonessa’s familiar can help shed some light on this. I appreciate your suggestion, Lord Chareos, but now is not the time to summon your Wall of Fire.”
Lord Chareos wrote:A sudden thought comes to mind remembering their battle with the dragon, and the studying of the Diorama, Only one other way him as he looks to the skies….
“With our previous battle with the Cold maiden she used that Icicle dragon, what to say she wouldn’t use similar constructs against us, Ones that could take to the air much like the dragon tried.”
“It is possible and something that we’ll need to keep watch for.”
Sensing that more is needed to be said to the other Guardians, Sir Corley will try to explain the situation better. “I know that you are all eager to engage the enemy and I sympathize with that. But the kind of battle we are engaged in precludes that right now. A siege is unlike any battle you’ve fought in thus far. We know little about our enemy and most likely our enemy knows little about us.”
“What we are in could be called a ‘feeling out process’. The force we just turned back was not meant to overwhelm us. They were sent to test the strength of our defenses. It is a sound strategy designed to learn about us. To counter such measures, you employ only the minimum amount of your resources to stave off the threat. Therefore I kept any special attacks and magic spells to a bare minimum. The enemy does not know about your exploding bottles or what other magicks we have at our command.”
“It is true that they now know we have multiple priests here, but this works in our favor. If the main force of the enemy is composed of undead, then they know we can defeat them. I would suspect that any further undead attack would only be a diversion. Thus the situation remains that we know little about the strength and scope of the enemy, and we remain a mystery to them.”
“We can expect a series of attacks, each more powerful than the one before it. With each attack the measure of our response will be increased. Those things that we saved during this battle will be used later on. For now I suggest that you all get some rest. This promises to be a very long day.”
“Depending on what Dusk finds, we may launch an attack of our own. We’ll have to see what Lyonessa’s familiar discovers.”
