New Frontiers #64

Sherwood and the elves have departed on their quest. The roster has changed slightly, as Laucian has left with the elves, but Yusef, a Priest of Celestian has joined. The group's attention now turns to planning their activities at Fort Fletcher.

Last Night:

Sharadin/Kylie

"Hello, Lord Sharadin," Kylie says to the king's chief mage. "I believe we met once before; it is a pleasure to see you again. When there is more time someday, I would like to learn more about this guild of mages."
“Hello, Kylie. Yes, we have met before in passing, although both Sherwood and Jallarzi have kept me up to date with your progress. You’ll have time to learn more about the Mage Guild fairly soon. Sherwood asked me if I had any ideas about getting you to the Sylvan Realm faster than overland travel would permit. Turns out that I do. After you’re finished up in Alfheim, you’ll be traveling to Karn’s Keep. I’ll explain more there.”

Sharadin/Lia:
"I can understand your wariness, this is all new to us as well. If you would like, perhaps when we return a trip could be arranged? The Lost Valley is nice, but as I found out, can be a bit overwhelming for some whom are not so open-minded. If you would like I could guide you to her? I think she would enjoy your visit greatly."
“I look forward to that,” Lord Sharadin will say. “I never really knew my father that well. I was only boy when the war came. I suspect that we have much to share.”

Sharadin/Argent:
"Of course, Lord Sharadin. At the very least, the books will be in a safe place. Although, if I may, I'd like to hang on to the fifth level spell book. I feel that I am close to understanding those magicks and want to have it available when I do make that break through. Perhaps then I'll be able to learn Teleport and be able to visit Karn's keep at my leisure."
“Very well, Argent. You present a logical argument for keeping it for the time being. But once you have mastered its magicks, make sure it finds its way to Karn’s Keep. As you said, once you’ve mastered Teleport coming and go will be much easier.”

Today:

Gabriella/Validar:

"Indeed that is true, although unfortunate. Duty calls, but we have three days here to share. I would be honored if you would join me for dinner this evening."

“I look forward to this evening, Lord Validar.”

"But for now, I must prepare for the King's audience. Still if you would walk with me, I would be fascinated to hear how you came to be the chief negotiator for the new King. I knew that you were talented, but you have been keeping secrets from me," he says with an easy smile.

“It all just sort of fell into place,” Gabriella says as you walk along. “The art of negotiation is something that is common among my mothers people and something that I’ve taken easily too. This brought the attention of others our King was using to find like-minded individuals among the younger generation of nobility. I believe it was the Lady Salavarian who recommended me. Since then I have kept my eyes open for those who would fit in well with the King and have done some negotiating. Its only in the last few days where I’ve been given more direct assignments.”

Sir Validar will mention to all of the Guardians and their friends when assembled. He will also make a point of inviting Lady Gabriella to the dinner as well.

Gabriella will graciously accept the invitation.

This whole above scene is completely retconned. The couple is quite a bit less formal for various reasons than this conversation and a bit deeper into their mutual endearment with each other. As mentioned elsewhere Gabby is not the chief negotiator for the King and while he was aware of her and her connection to Validar, it wasn't until the actions she took to help the people of Corunglain that she really began to jump into the limelight somewhat.

Their conversation after breakfast and before the King's Audience would be detailed in The Aftermath of the Siege of Corunglain in their story, specifically the last post, which I am replicating here:

After the discussion with Yusef about joining the Guardians and stories about his past and background, Validar and Gabriella have finished their morning meal and are now in the halls of the Duke’s Gatehouse. He specifically takes her hand, instead of offering her his arm, which would be the courtly thing to do. She acknowledges the intent, squeezing his hand tightly, and leans in taking his upper arm in her other hand.

“I apologize for the jesting back there, my dearest,” Validar finally admits. “But I wanted to try and raise your spirits. You seemed so despondent and sad.”

“The apology is mine, darling. It was certainly nothing about you… or us. I suppose the terrors of the battle and especially the aftermath weighed heavily on my emotions. It was terrible, frightening. But I couldn’t just stand by. While there was nothing I could do during the fighting, once the snow came and the enemy retreated, I heard about the terrible casualties and the refugees sequestered in the Gatehouses. I am told that was a magnificent plan that you and your team enacted for their safety, by the way.”

“We needed a place to protect them and a point from which to counterattack. It served both purposes,” Validar explains.

“And with a newborn babe, even,” Gabriella nods admiringly.

“We do what we must.” Validar shrugged. Thinking back, it was an epic battle if told as a story. He wondered how Lyonessa might spin a lofty tale with such an event as inspiration. His only thought at the time however was to save as many lives as possible and drive out the enemy.

“I was in the Duke’s Gatehouse and saw the issues that people were facing: lack of clothes, food, separation or loss of their family members, children without parents. I started working to organize the collection of supplies and enough food. We began with the excess we had in the caravan.”

“You started this entire project on your own volition?” Validar says, his eyes widening at the revelation and a smile of admiration filling his face. “You are to be commended, praised and…” he tried to think of another word, “…highly approbated even!” That made her laugh. To Validar this was one of his favorite sounds.

But she turned serious again. “I also simply did what I could. And it wasn’t just myself of course. One of the Sisters of Azrella soon joined the volunteers. Her name is Faith. She then took over the organization there with other priestesses of their faith and allowed me to duplicate the process at another location. Eventually we had volunteers at each, able to exchange information with runners and get family members reconnected quickly. For those that needed anything we could put together an efficient system to try and meet those needs. There was so much work to do,” she looks away, as the memories rush in. “And the children who have lost everything are the most difficult to deal with emotionally. We must take all their fears and worries into ourselves as we try to assuage them. It is tiring and emotionally draining and we cannot show any of it in front of them." Her eyes burned with a fierce determination that reflected the amount of effort and emotion she had put into helping so many unfortunate people.

"And they need that encouragement or even just a kind face to sit with them. That’s why I slept there last night. I waited until every one of those dear children finally dozed off. I’m sorry that I was unable to wait for you to arrive, but I simply couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer.”

Validar thought he knew this woman well enough already. In their time together in Gateway, he knew she was intelligent, pleasant, kind, warm-hearted, funny and so much more. The selflessness she exhibited here placed her in an even more otherworldly light. Silent, he stopped and turned to her and slowly pulled her bodily into an embrace. She happily accepted. He held her tightly for a time. It continued long enough that an onlooker might think their bodies had become one. It lasted long enough they could feel each other's heartbeats. This was not a flirty hug or even truly a romantic hug. This hug whispered ever so softly, “I love you.”

When they finally stepped apart, Gabriella had to choke back emotions and a tear started form in the corner of her right eye. She carefully wiped it away with a smile, careful not to smudge her eye makeup.

Validar beamed like a schoolboy looking at his first crush. When he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper and filled with wonder and admiration and respect. “You are amazing.”

She dabbed at another tear, her eyes glistening, and quickly waved her hands in front of her face, trying desperately to stave off further welling up. Gabriella attempted to maintain a composed smile, her lips slightly trembling as she quickly blinked, the corners of her eyes crinkling with the effort to suppress the overwhelming wave of joy bubbling up inside her; her breath catches in her throat, but she forces a laugh, her voice slightly shaky, as if desperately trying to redirect the emotion before it spills over.

“That was nice,” she finally manages, her voice almost cracking on the last word. And they both laugh heartily at the humor of her understatement. Continuing their walk, the pair are silent for a few long moments, the enormity of their shared emotions lingering like a welcome guest.

“I should get back to my work,” Gabriella grudgingly asserts. “And you said you had a meeting about the dwarves attack still coming this morning,” she reminds him. "Duty calls unfortunately."

“Yes, thank you, I did not forget,” Validar agrees. “Even though I feel as though I was just hit by a bolt of lightning.” That made her smile. “Very well, I will be happy to walk you to your office.”

She smiles again. To be honest, she had been smiling continuously since that powerful emotion-drenched hug. “Thanks, my darling. I do need to change out of these clothes and help finish up the remaining work. Another day or so and we should have accomplished all that must needs done,” she adds hopefully.

“Ah, that might be a problem, my sweet.” A quizzical look formed on her face and her brow furrowed at the puzzling statement. He continued on. “Remember I promised to let you know about important details in advance so that you could be prepared?”

“Yes?” came the hesitant reply.

“After my meeting with Aria about the dwarven attacks, you and I are going to meet the new King." This revelation caused her jaw to go slack with surprise. "Well, not JUST you and I,” he quickly adds. “The King wants to meet the Guardians of the Light.”

“Truly?! An audience with the King? How wonderfully intimidating,” she responds only half-jokingly. “But I am not a part of the Guardians.” Her face shows some concern at this developing situation.

“True. But you, Gabriella, are an equal part of you and I. And WE are going to meet with the King.”

Battle plans:

Later that afternoon, a conference room in the main keep is used for the gathering. Aria is there; along with a dwarf named Farian Silverpike who is the Wayfinder mentioned last night. A copy of the dwarven construction map for Fort Fletcher is there. (These can be accessed via the World of Cynalon Reference page in the Maps section.)

The current state of the condition of the fort is unknown.

This was also adjusted due to variations in people's posts. So the meeting would be before the King's audience and moved up slightly in the day.

GM Notes:

The elfquest group can continue their conversations in this post. There own post will be up soon, so they can continue on there.

To Save Mother Tree!

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:
Valena wrote:“My clan has a vested interest in this matter,” Valena states. “I am told that they were supposed to protect the Sylvan Land and failed in this task. Many elves have held that against Clan Feador for a long time now.”

A grimace crosses Kylie's face. "That's roughly what Lilia described. It would seem that our clan has much to make up for. If we succeed in this quest given by Corellon, then maybe that will help."
Valena wrote:Valena considers for a moment before speaking. “I only know what I was told about what happened in the Sylvan Lands all those years ago. It was long before I was ever born. I know that many of the older members of my clan feel the shame of those events, but I do not as I did not yet exist. Yet elfin memories are long some are not as quick to forget.”

"I just found out, and already I feel some bit of that shame. Hopefully, I will get over it."
Valena wrote:“I was told that a human sorcerer named Moorkroft betrayed the elves and led an army into the Sylvan Land. The elves could not hold in the face of the army and were forced to abandon the Sylvan Land. It is said that the Mother Tree was concealed so that it could not be found. Some of my clan remained behind to tend to the tree while the others departed for the Elfholds. They believed that the army would withdraw eventually and then the elves would return. Human life spans are so short that even if it took decades it would not seem long to the elves. The call to return to the Sylvan Lands never came. I don’t think anyone knows why.”
Kylie listens carefully as Valena tells the tale. Lilia had not mentioned this Moorkroft, so that is an added piece of the puzzle. "That is very mysterious. I hope that we will be able to get to the bottom of it. The situation there could be very different now than it was then, so there is no way to know what to expect when we arrive."
Valena wrote:“Allurien Feador? Yes, I’ve heard of her. Almost everyone in Clan Feador has. She was a famous adventurer when I was just a child. She was skilled in magic and with the bow. The last I ever heard of her she had settled down outside the Elfholds to have a family. It’s been at least fifteen years since I heard that name.”
As Valena speaks, Kylie's eyes light up. "My mother was... famous?! Really?! Wow. That's pretty incredible. To me, she has always just been my mom. I must have inherited my magical talent from her. Can you tell me of any adventures she had?"
Sharadin wrote:“Hello, Kylie.
"I'll be looking forward to it, Lord Sharadin," Kylie answers. "Both learning more and finding out about Karn's Keep and our travelling method. I'm sure the latter will prove quite interesting."
Sherwood wrote:“We’ll be gone before that happens. I believe the king wishes to reward the Guardians for their efforts in Corunglain. There will be other occasions to meet the king.”

"I suspected as much, Sherwood," Kylie replies. "I just wanted to verify my suspicions. Not sure I would feel very comfortable in the presense of a king and his court anyway."
Rat wrote:Rat will come forward and give his apprentice a big hug. “You watch yer back, Lass, and find something nice!”
"Oh, I will," Kylie says, returning the hug happily. "And you watch your back - and everyone else's."

Yusef:
Rat wrote:Realizing that this elf business is no place for an honest halfling like him, Rat finds other employment with the dwarf known as Aria. Before sleeping, he’ll ask Yusef to wake him in time to see Kylie and the others off.
Yusef is happy to oblige, as it ensures that he will be there on time himself. While he doesn't really know them very well yet, he suspects that he will miss his new friends while they are away.
Validar wrote:"We can certainly use all the assistance that we can muster. It seems every time we assemble a large enough group, circumstances manage to pull us in various separate directions. Once we deal with our immediate situation, then either the Guardians or Sherwood's group will be after the Cult of the Blackflame once again."
"Hmm..." Yusef murmurs, pondering. "I wonder if that is just part of the nature of adventuring parties. While we may travel together for a time, we all have our own paths to follow and our own destinations."
Validar wrote:Gabriella smiles sweetly at the man. "Pleased to meet you, Yusef."

"We will be off soon, but perhaps you will have some time to exchange details on your common backgrounds. The Guardians should all share most of their upcoming meals here together. I am certain she will be at several of those gatherings."
"I will look forward to it," Yusef says with a cheerful smile.
[Edited more reference to meeting Gabby.]
Validar wrote:"I have my own suspicions about Elcadan and the merchants that rule her. Elcadan is Pyris' enemy and I would stand ready to oppose them at any opportunity. In truth, I would like to bring Elcadan's rule of those lands to an end and free all of her people. It is a colossal undertaking, but it has already begun in some small ways."

"The people of Zakhara may prove helpful in this as well, which is another reason I wish to go there. Unfortunately, my plans may take years or even decades to complete. Freeing your mother, however, should be a much easier task, whatever those scum may consort with. Demons do not sway me. I have already faced one such creature and prevailed."

Yusef isn't sure how he feels about the idea of overthrowing an entire city. However, he is not the son of a baron and so their perspectives are very different. "You've fought and beaten a demon?" Yusef sounds both incredulous and amazed.
Validar wrote:"You will have the opportunity to prove yourself. We offer nothing more, we ask nothing less. Have a pleasant evening."

"That is sufficient. Thank you."

Lady Argent

Post by Argent »

Lady Argent:
"Yes I found my protection ran out in that battle, or was it dispelled? Either way, a re-casting would be most appreciated, Argent," Lyonessa replies.
“It was dispelled,” Argent explains. “It took mine down as well. Fortunately, I was able to avoid taking serious damage from the orc horde.”
“I would be happy to assist you in learning proper use of the weapon,” Kylie says with a smile that fades into a disappointed look. “Unfortunately, we are leaving in the morning. Maybe one of the others would be willing.”
“Thank you for offering, but our paths are leading separate ways once more. I’ll ask Sherra. She assisted me before in its usage.”
“Very well, Argent. You present a logical argument for keeping it for the time being. But once you have mastered its magicks, make sure it finds its way to Karn’s Keep. As you said, once you’ve mastered Teleport coming and go will be much easier.”
“Thank you, Lord Sharadin. I promise that it will be retired to Karn’s Keep as soon as possible.”
Sir Validar wrote:"Anyone who wishes to join us for the strategy meeting with Aria and her dwarven cohorts, please do so. Also, I need several volunteers. Lady Lyonessa would like to have a communal dinner and perform a ballad for all of you. I suggested tomorrow evening, since today is quite busy. Would any of you wish to plan this gathering? It need not be fancy, but it would be nice if we had a bit of privacy. Feel welcome to invite anyone else you wish to the festivities as well."
“I plan on adding a few more fire related magicks to my spells, as they tend to be affective against undead. Otherwise, I have little to add to any battle plans. However assisting Lyonessa is more to my liking. It’s been a while since I planned for a feast. We’ll make it the best we can with what we have to work with.”

That afternoon, Argent will try to find Sherra so that she can speak to her.

“Ah, there you are Sherra!”

Argent noted that Sherra wasn’t all that taken with her new title so decides not to use it. Since they are still equals, the use of it is optional anyway.

“I wanted to ask a favor from you. I’ve decided to continue learning how to use the shortbow for emergency situations. Do you think you could continue your instruction in it?”

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:
Kylie smiles. “I am very glad to hear that, Lord Corley, but what do you mean by, ‘better than ever’?”
“It is not something that is easy to put into words, my lady. It is like everything is now clearer to me. That I understand what is happening around me and that my attention is not diverted away to something trivial.”
Sir Validar wrote:"We may get a little chance to rest during the defense of Fletcher as well. I am certain that once we clean the Fort of undead, there will no longer be daily battles. We should have some small pockets of time to rest there as well. In truth, it is not my favorite location to winter in, but we have a chance to turn he tide against the humanoid horde."
“We will do what we always do, my friend! Make the best of a bad situation and turn it to our advantage. After what we’ve endured here in Corunglain, I do not see this other humanoid horde as being much of a threat to a properly defended fortress.”

Sir Corley will graciously accept the magical girdle as his part of the treasure dispersal. “Thank you, my friends. I am sure that it will be put to great use in the battles to come.”

With his new girdle, his ogre gauntlets become redundant. He offers them to Sir Validar for his own use.

Later, Corley attends the battle plan meeting. He eyes the maps to Fort Fletcher curiously.

“Interesting construction. Those inside the fortress are spared most of the danger from attackers. As the King stated, a small group can defend its walls against a large number of troops. Coupled with our mages, those down in the valley are little more than target dummies.”

“As for our initial insertion into the Fortress, I feel we should land on one of the observation towers and then make our way down into the chamber below. It has only one way in and I would prefer keeping our rear flank covered at all times. No need to let the enemy come up behind us and catch us unaware.”

“From there we can spread out securing each area of the fortress as we go. I would suggest that we knights lead the way with clerical support accompaning us. The others can follow a short distance behind giving support as necessary. Sir Acerion should be paired with Lady Ivy, Sir Validar with Grondar, and Lady Olivia can accompany me. That way any undead we come across can be either destroyed by their words of power or by our blades. “

Ivy:
Kylie makes a sour face at the mention of the troll. “I shall have to thank Olivia for bringing you back to us. It is good to hear that you will be up and about so soon. As for your question, the exact nature of our quest is apparently some big secret from non-elves, though I’m at a loss to understand why. Thus, I probably shouldn’t divulge any details, and at this point I know little more than that we will be traveling a very long ways at the behest of the elven god, Corellon Larethian.”
“There is much that we humans don’t know about our elfin friends, as I am sure there are things they don’t understand about us. Still, being chosen for this quest by an elven god is a great honor. My the Blue Lady bless you in this quest.”
Chareos will approach Ivy later on in the day, “Lady Ivy, if it is acceptable to you, I will be reapplying the Stoneskin Spell to you before we depart.” Unless Ivy has any reason not to Chareos will then cast it upon her.
“Oh, thank you very much!” Ivy will gratefully say. “I don’t normally realize that I have that magic with me, but am very much aware when it is gone!”
Sir Validar wrote:"Anyone who wishes to join us for the strategy meeting with Aria and her dwarven cohorts, please do so. Also, I need several volunteers. “I would happy to assist Lyonessa as well. Some time to relax and have fun would be most welcomed.”

Ivy takes the Phylactery when it is offered and attaches it to her left wrist.

Validar wrote:"The defense of Hammerfall and Fort Fletcher is clearly a mutual effort. While the Fort can hold the pass, Hammerfall is in a position to defend the southern approach to the Fort. Once we clear Fort Fletcher, we will need to push on Hammerfall as well right away."
“Aye, it sounds agreeable to me. No since standing around wigglin’ our thumbs and getting’ soft! I am told that there is a small, infrequently used path through the mountains from Fort Fletcher to Hammerfall. If it is passable, it would be the best route to take.”
Validar wrote:"I can offer what assistance we can on the surface, helping to secure the area and to drive away the humanoids who have not garrisoned elsewhere. Inside your city, as you say, your own kin will be better served to reclaim its halls."
“That sounds like an agreeable arrangement. Hard to get into specifics since we don’t know what we’re going to find there.”
"A wayfinder, eh? Excellent," Grondar replies. "He will be very helpful in this undertaking. And I have no doubt that having Rat along will be beneficial as well, though we may have to keep an eye on his... acquisitiveness."
“I think we can keep the halfling in line. I suspect that he is like many of their people, curious to a fault and will happily go off exploring. We’ll just have to shake him down each night to see what he found along the way.”

Sherwood:
Validar wrote:"And as for Nightmist, I am curious: is she truly a drow as we suspected? Was she able to offer any other helpful information?"

Sherwood considers for a moment before answering.

“The situation in the Lost Valley is a complex one. King Victor the Second was the first to venture there. He found that an ancient race call the Hutaaka dwelled there. They were once masters of what we call the Inner Kingdom long ago. They are a peaceful race and when faced with the threat of the humanoids retreated into the valley for safety. Finding them to be no threat and close to extinction, King Victor decreed the existence of the valley to be concealed.”

“Around a hundred years ago, Nightmist fled from the Underdark and emerged in the Lost Valley. Yes, she is a drow elf as been rumored. But she is not an evil person and was fleeing persecution. She serves a elfin deity known as Eilistraee, the patron of those rare good dark elves who wish to return to the surface.”

“Nightmist befriended the Hutaaka and eventually braved the outside world. She came across my grandfather and he helped her fit in by giving her a magic item that would conceal her identity. The two became good friends and eventually lovers. Short after the war with Keln began, Nightmist gave birth to a daughter. This daughter is Lia and Talen’s mother, so they are in effect my cousins.”

“Nightmist had a great many tales about my grandfather, and probably some about your ancestors as well. I found her to be a charming and articulate hostess. Its easy to understand what my grandfather saw in her.”

“I’ve passed this information on to Sharadin and he plans to keep tabs on Nightmist. She currently uses the Lost Valley as a refuge for those beings we would generally consider to be evil, but who are not. There are some other drow there, goblins, orcs, half-orcs and even a few half-ogres along with regular humans. They do not appear to be a threat and seem to only want to live in peace. Regardless, they should be watched just to make sure.”

“Nightmist said not to hesitate should we need her assistance. Given that she adventured with our grandfathers, her skills must be most impressive by now. As you might have guessed, what we found in the Lost Valley was not what we were expecting. But we did learn where to look for the cult next, so that is something.”
I do what is necessary.

Aria wrote:“I think we can keep the halfling in line. I suspect that he is like many of their people, curious to a fault and will happily go off exploring. We’ll just have to shake him down each night to see what he found along the way.”
Aria's comment brings a hearty laugh from Grondar. "We can take turns holding him upside down and shaking. Should be fun."

When the time comes and after the elven group has departed, Grondar makes his way to the conference room for the strategy session. The room is quite large, with the usual high ceiling that humans are so fond of, and seems to be easily sufficient for their needs. Noting another dwarf in the room, Grondar approaches and introduces himself.

"Hello. Grondar Foehammer. You must be the new Wayfinder that Aria mentioned. A pleasure to meet you." Since a dwarf will likely recognise the symbol of his deity, there is no need to state the obvious.

Once the introductions are complete, Grondar begins examining the maps laid out on the table. The fort is small, which should work to their benefit as they are a small group.

Sir Corley lays out some initial observations and posits a reasonable approach to taking the fort. For the most part, it seems as good as any.

"My main concern is whether the undead are likely to use the passage blocking-stones against us. While most undead are essentially mindless, many of the greater undead - such as vampires and liches - can be quite intelligent. It would be of great help to know if there were any of that sort in the fort directing the occupation."

Grondar then shifts his attention to Corley. "Perhaps more good pairings would include Aria with Yusef and Lyonessa with Chareos. I might even be inclined to add Sherra, Rat, Po, Argent and Arocken to make five three-person teams. This could give us a lot of flexibility. Of course, this presupposes that Lyonessa and Yusef's ministries are effective against the undead. If not, three five-person teams would be another good option."

To be honest, I don't know what the usual greeting among dwarves is. Do they shake hands, clunk heads, bump chests or what?

“I plan on adding a few more fire related magicks to my spells, as they tend to be affective against undead. Otherwise, I have little to add to any battle plans. However assisting Lyonessa is more to my liking. It’s been a while since I planned for a feast. We’ll make it the best we can with what we have to work with.”

“I would happy to assist Lyonessa as well. Some time to relax and have fun would be most welcomed.”

"Thank you both," Lyonessa will say to Argent and Ivy as they agree to help her put together a nice meal for everyone. "I know it's not going to be anything grand, but I think everyone deserves a little break and some time together when we're not fighting for our lives."

Lyonessa knows that a good meal and a rousing ballad can heal almost any wound not caused by steel. Now if she can just pull off her ballad flawlessly, then everything will be right. Because of this, Lyonessa bows out of the battle planning.

Not being there, she can't directly respond, but if approached or called in, Lyonessa will say, "I am able to affect undead by the blessings and word of my goddess."

Sir Validar -

Lady Gabriella:
"Indeed that is true, although unfortunate. Duty calls, but we have three days here to share. I would be honored if you would join me for dinner this evening."

“I look forward to this evening, Lord Validar.”

"As do I, my lady." Lord Validar will do his best to have a private room set up for their dinner. It will not be an opulent meal, but the privateness should make up for that.

"I do not have much experience with people from Zakhara, as I mentioned to you before. We get the occasional trading caravan, but I would like to increase relations with that land. Especially once Stone Ridge is returned to Cynalon control."

"I must admit that I am not only impressed by your apparent skill, if the King has you working for him, but am pleased that we are both members of the King's Council now. I am certain that Lord and Lady Allonica are quite proud of you, Gabriella."

Just ignore the continuation of the above scene as it no longer is valid. See above post for details.

Yusef:
"We can certainly use all the assistance that we can muster.

"Perhaps so. In the Seekers, we lost members more to the dangerous area we were fighting in than to splitting people off to other pursuits. It seems this is a much more political series of missions that we find ourselves in than the normal adventuring party, I would imagine."

Gabriella smiles sweetly at the man.

"As will I. I have not been able to spend much time with her recently, and it is a quite pleasant surprise to find her here," Lord Validar will respond. He always seems to smile slightly when he thinks or talks about Lady Allonica.
[Edited for Gabby's presence.]

"Not alone, but yes. We fought what I believe they called a Baatezu, or pit fiend, or some such thing, when I was part of the Seekers. We were exploring the ruins under Gateway after the seige had been thrown off and inadvertantly released this guardian creature. It was a difficult battle and I was temporarily frozen by some magic the beast possessed. Fortunately, I was able to throw of fthe effects quickly and with my allies, we managed to send it back to its foul home."

"If there are demons that we must face in order to free your mother, they are the ones who should be trembling, for they shall not remain long on this plane."

Grondar:
Grondar nods. "I can understand your point, Sir Validar. Personally, I hope to spend my winter in Hammerfall - if we can clean it out in time. If not, it will give us something interesting to do while you all are snowed in."

"My own hope is that we are successful enough to defend the Fort and manage to winter elsewhere. Once the Fort is secured and the pass is blocked, the only concern is humanoids already in Stone Ridge and Ardelphia."

"I am sure Aria will be supplied with intelligence and some information as well, including maps and such. We will have some time to develop a suitable plan."

"I do not doubt that you are right. It would not do to underestimate Lady Stonehand in many regards, I think."

"You may well be correct. However, and I say this with no disrespect, Aria does not seem like the leader type. I imagine that she was given this task to clear Hammerfall more for her fighting prowess and due to the fact that her father holds title in Rockhome. Still this sort of mission is often done by adventurers, with less support and planning than this will have."

Lord Corley:
“We will do what we always do, my friend! Make the best of a bad situation and turn it to our advantage. After what we’ve endured here in Corunglain, I do not see this other humanoid horde as being much of a threat to a properly defended fortress.”

"Indeed, that is the spirit. In truth, My hope is that we will be able to crush the invasion and move on Ardelphia during the winter. The weather will be the deciding factor there, however."

Sir Corley will graciously accept the magical girdle as his part of the treasure dispersal. “Thank you, my friends. I am sure that it will be put to great use in the battles to come.”

With his new girdle, his ogre gauntlets become redundant. He offers them to Sir Validar for his own use.

"As you are often the point person on our attacks, my friend, it is only reasonable that you have even more magickal power at your disposal. You turned the tide of the battle with Ember and I believe in maximizing your advantages, rather than trying to dilute them throughout your forces. It is a dangerous task, but one which suits you so well, Sir Corley."

"I thank you for the offer of the Ogre Gauntlets. They will increase the damage that I can do in my attacks as well."

Party Planning:
Chareos- “I am not much for planning of parties but there is always a first time for everything. If I can be of any help in the planning of our little get together then I will help.”

"Very well. I am sure that you will be of assistance."

Argent-“I plan on adding a few more fire related magicks to my spells, as they tend to be affective against undead. Otherwise, I have little to add to any battle plans. However assisting Lyonessa is more to my liking. It’s been a while since I planned for a feast. We’ll make it the best we can with what we have to work with.”

"I am certain that you will manage a remarkable meal. In any case, it is the comraderie that will make the time together. A chance to celebrate our considerable victory and a chance to steel ourselves for the victory to come."

Fort Fletcher Planning Session:
A conference room is made available to us for the strategy session and Lord Corley has acquired a set of the dwarven construction plans for the Fort.

Lord Corley makes a suggestion, while Grondar adds some comments.

"I like the small two-person team idea, provided we do not get separated too much. The remanider of the group can work together as an anchor point and as a mobile firing group, with missiles and magic. I agree that Yusef and Aria can be another assault team, as I would not deter Aria from using that new Mithril Battlexe in direct attacks. If each group stays in close proximity, we have an anchor for these groups and we can search four areas at one time."

"I am not certain that coming in from the top is my preference, although the idea of protecting our rear is sensible.

"My main concern is whether the undead are likely to use the passage blocking-stones against us. While most undead are essentially mindless, many of the greater undead - such as vampires and liches - can be quite intelligent. It would be of great help to know if there were any of that sort in the fort directing the occupation."

"The information we have is that the gates are open, so unlikley that the undead are actively garrisoning the fort. The humanoids are purported to be traveling through it. Unfortunately, we have no definite information on
what sort of undead we may encounter. Likely we will see ghouls and ghasts as they tend to areas of death, and with the garrison nearly wiped out, nothing would deter them from feeding on the dead humans and humanoids. There may be something more powerful there, but I would guess that we may see undead and manifestations of dead and no direct controlling figure."

Lyonessa later confirms that she does affect undead. And having her with the anchor force assures a priest abilities to turn or destroy their foes as well.

"I would suggest we enter from the main interior staging area on Level 3, as it is central and gives us complete access to the fort in the case that the defenders left some of the blocks closed off. I would hate to be stymied immediately by our own defenses. It is a bit more dangerous, but I think this group is up to the task."

"Does anyone disagree?"

"I'm sorry to hear of your losses," Yusef says solemnly. "As for the political element that you mentioned, I have not been with you long enough to really know. However, I can well imagine that it may be at least part of the difference."

Yusef notes but does not comment on Validar's expression when he speaks of Lady Allonica. From the look, he would guess that there is more than friendship involved.

"I know not what lower-planes creatures we might encounter in such an effort as they come and go fairly freely there. Still, with the support of this group, we might yet succeed."

During the fort-liberation planning session, Yusef stands near the wall and listens as various ideas are put forth. While he has little training in the area, it is fairly clear to him that these people know what they are doing. From what he can tell by looking at the map, it appears to be a small fort and well-designed for defense by a small group. Once they succeed in taking the fort, they should be able to hold it against the humanoids from the Broken Lands.

Sir Validar -

"I'm sorry to hear of your losses," Yusef says solemnly. "As for the political element that you mentioned, I have not been with you long enough to really know. However, I can well imagine that it may be at least part of the difference."

"Thank you. The Seekers lost many members, some only there a very short time. We were adventuring in enemy territory. Those are dangerous lands. Fortunately, the Guardians have been operating within Cynalon, so there is some measure of safety in general that The Frontier does not offer. Our next mission will be the most dangerous yet, as we are venturing into lands controlled by the humanoids."

"From what I've seen and heard from adventuring parties, they tend to stay together until death or retirement of the individuals. Their motivations are usually more similar to each other. In the cases of our group and the one Lord Sherwood assembled, we each have many different goals and motivations. That alone seems to suggest that the groups will be constantly changing. I am simply glad that we have yet to lose anyone to death."

"That is an impressive story, Sir Validar. I am somewhat familiar with such creatures, and defeating one is quite an accomplishment." Yusef considers for a moment. "I know not what lower-planes creatures we might encounter in such an effort as they come and go fairly freely there. Still, with the support of this group, we might yet succeed."

"Truth be told, it was not one of my fondest memories of foes that we've bested. It was a simple, but dangerous, guardian to some exploration we were doing beneath Gateway. It was not a vital mission, nor was it one that was completed while I was there, so it truly does not stand out much in my mind. The Seekers managed to overwhelm the fiend, and while it may have been a match for several of us at once, it was unable to do much against our combined might. We defeated the creature quite easily I might add, and I am not being boastful when I say that."

"I would dare say that the Guardians, man for man, are more powerful than the Seekers, although we had a much larger group with them. Still I would dare to say that the Guardians would defeat the same fiend more easily than we did that day beneath Gateway."

"When the time is come, I will stand beside you against the fiends from Elcadan, as well as their lower-plane consorts. The Guardians were formed to oppose darkness and this is clearly an obvious foe. Your mother is as good as freed, my new friend."

Strategy Session:
Yusef looks up at Grondar, mildly surprised by the comment. "Unfortunately, if I understand you correctly, my brotherhood does not have the kind of special power with regard to undead that you mentioned. However, I'll be glad to go ask Lyonessa." Leaving the room, Yusef returns moments later with her answer. "So it seems she could team effectively with Aria, and I could remain with the anchor group, if that is what you wish."

"Very well, I think Yusef's suggestion only makes sense if he is unable to affect undead directly. Lyonessa and Aria will make another strike team and Yusef will join the anchor group."

"We will proceed in an orderly fashion, first clearing the large open area on Level 3. By starting here, we are assured that we can travel throughout the entire complex even if some of the stone blocks were engaged in defense. Also this is the largest open area and as such gives us the most maneuvering room," Sir Validar explains. "It also gives the opportunity to encounter the largest horde of enemy immediately," he soon adds with a wry smile.

"The boiler room is also a large open space and allows our groups to remain relatively together. From there we will proceed across to the five rooms across from there," he says indicating the southern part of level 3. Once we establish our presence and recover this level in its entirety, we will continue our plans on how to proceed, although my initial suggestion would be to work our way down from there in order to secure the gates against any further humanoid use."

"Level 2 may be the most difficult area to clear as there are the most rooms and we will have to secure these one by one in an orderly fashion."

Post Continued:

The Guardians continue to relax and plan in Corunglain. While working on their plan of action for Fort Fletcher, Lord Sharadin sticks his head in.

“Sorry, I’m late, but things have been hectic,” The Archmage states as he enters. “Anyway, I hope you didn’t get too far along.”

Stepping up to the table, Lord Sharadin looks over the maps as if searching for something.

“Ah, here it is. We’ll be putting you into the fortress at this point here.”

Lord Sharadin points to the chamber to the south of the Heironeous temple on level 4 of the fortress.

“There was the designated teleport arrival point for the Fortress. I scryed the location earlier and it seemed safe to use. So that’s where you’ll be starting out. I’ve never been to the fortress before, so trying any other point would be too risky at this time.”

GM Notes:

Lord Sharadin stating where you guys would start out at slipped my mind last week. My bad.

Plans have begun on a little group party for tomorrow night. Everything is proceeding smoothly on that front.

Tonight, Sir Validar has his private meal with Lady Gabriella.

Next morning, Sir Alon and Dame Sharl depart on their campaign to the north of Corunglain and into the Broken Lands. Lord Antonic and Lady Teris also take a small contingent of men to the west towards Fort Runnels. The current plans have the King departing Corunglain tomorrow afternoon. Lady Gabriella will be departing with him at that time.

Lord Sharadin will be transporting the group to Fort Fletcher the morning after that. The Duke of Corunglain’s seneschal will remain in charge of the city for the time being. The populace knows him, so that will help smooth things a bit. A few of the other nobles will stay in Corunglain to assist.

Now what?

planning and questions...

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Sherra makes sure to attend the planning session, mostly to get her eyes on the map. It is going to make a world of difference to know where she's going to be. Conditions in the fort are not going to be optimal she suspects, and needs to know where things are in case she finds herself in near or total darkness.

It sounds like Sir Validar's planning is coming to a close when Lord Sheradin comes in and changes their arrival point. Sherra suspects there will be a new strategy now and waits to hear what the changes will be.

A little later, Argent seeks her out.
Ah, there you are Sherra!”

"Oh, I didn't know I was being looked for," Sherra replies smiling. She listens to Argent's question before responding. "Sure, I wouldn't mind. It will be good for you to practice without a horde of humanoids clawing to reach you," she'll say light-heartedly.

Sherra will instruct Argent on where to best hit targets, how to account for wind and distance, but more importantly build up her confidence with using the weapon in the short time available.

Acerion:

Attending the strategy meeting, there is much discussion about splitting the group up into small teams while leaving a larger one to act as an anchor. Acerion agrees with the idea, "I believe that will work to our advantage as we will be able to clear out much of the fortress quickly. We need to move within range of each other though, so that should one team encounter heavy resistance, they can fall back to the anchor and draw out the enemy allowing more of us to defeat them."

Validar finishes up most of the planning, indicating our insertion point. The last few details are being hammered out when Lord Sharadin enters.

Despite this, Acerion thinks it shouldn't change too much of the overall plan, just maybe in the manner of which they accomplish things. Acerion will see if Validar or any others raise points to the contrary.

Plans have begun on a little group party for tomorrow night. Everything is proceeding smoothly on that front.

Tonight, Sir Validar has his private meal with Lady Gabriella.

Later on in the day, once things have started to become quiet, Acerion will seek out Ivy. Once he finds her, he will ask, "If I might ask, my Lady Ivy, would you be inclined to join me for dinner tonight? Tomorrow evening I hear will be quite festive, and I was hoping for some time for just us tonight."

The following morning Acerion will see off those lords that are leaving. He will say a few words to each lord and lady, and offer a small prayer to the Dame Sharl so that Heironeous watches over her.

New Strategy...

Sir Validar -

The Guardians continue to relax and plan in Corunglain. While working on their plan of action for Fort Fletcher, Lord Sharadin sticks his head in.

“Sorry, I’m late, but things have been hectic,” The Archmage states as he enters. “Anyway, I hope you didn’t get too far along.”

Unfortunately, Lord Sharadin soon indicates that they will be unable to enter where they had been planning. There is a single designated arrival point.

Sir Validar hestitates a few moments as he scans the map again. If he is disappointed in the changes, his face does not show it. "It is not a large change and coming in near the temple is bound to be a safe location. The undead are unlikely you have desecrated the temples and most likely avoided them."

"Level 4 is not large and there are few rooms, especially considering most are associated with the temples. We will clear this area completely and then move down and continue as we originally planned. The whole place needs to be checked and re-checked before we can be certain it is safely controlled."

Once the strategy session breaks, Validar will commend Sir Corley on his planning suggestions. "You have not been one to offer detailed plans before, my friend. I do not say that as a condemnation, of course, simply a truth of the matter. It always seemed like your attention was too easily diverted. I wonder if this is the effects of the Priestess' healing skills."

Validar will also ask Sir Acerion to step aside briefly. "You asked me if I was troubled before, and in truth I am not, not any more than normal anyway. However, you seem unnaturally on edge lately. Is there something you wish to talk about, my friend?"

After the strategy session, Sir Validar will meet up with Sir Alon Teramar. They exchange some more stories and Validar will ask a favor. "Sir Alon, I was wondering if you would be so kind as to indulge me in a bit of fancy. I would like to test my swordsmanship against you now, to see how much more I have yet to learn. You taught me well and I have learned much since I last rode beside you."

After the mock combat with his old mentor, Sir Validar will ready himself for the evening meal he has prepared with Lady Gabriella. There they exchange further details about their families and some plans and desires for the future.

Validar initially found himself quite enamored with the beautiful Lady Gabriella. They met in Gateway after the seige of the city had been thwarted. The Seekers were naturally showered with attention and admiration both on their arrival in the city and at the feast that General Logan commissioned for them. Each of the Seekers seemed to have their individual admirers, at least those that were not already 'attached', such as Finrod and Stephanie, as well as Blod and Zynara.

There were several beautiful ladies that Validar met at the feast. They seemed to have various reasons for their interests, not the least of which was an attempt at marrying a hero. One of the ladies stood out above the others; perhaps it was for her beauty or perhaps it was the hint of exoticness that she exuded, or perhaps it was that she was simply someone without a pretext or scheme about her that most of the ladies there seemed to literally ooze.

Lady Gabriella was certainly flashy and likely her family was rich. She wore the finest silks, but in garments that were not completely typical for Cynalonian ladies. She also was adorned in a significant array of jewels, which while abundant was still tastefully done. Validar found himself seeking her out in the room with his eyes, even when they were not talking directly. Her vision captivated and intrigued him. Gabriella seemed to sparkle when she moved, and it was more from her emerald eyes than the substantial gold and gemstones that she sported. He would soon find out that her mother was Zakharian, which also accounted for her exotic charms, no doubt, as well as her wardrobe.

During the feast, the two had some opportunities to talk, but never as much as he wanted. As one of the guests of honor, it seemed someone was always interrupting any attempts to continue a conversation with the curly-haired beauty. He was most pleased when he managed to meet up with Gabriella again a few days after the feast.

Her father was Lord Allonica, a notable merchant in this part of the kingdom. They traded everywhere from Pyris to Elcadan to Gateway and even to Alexandria. Some of Gabriella's family on her mother's side were also traders who facilitated the expensive and exotic trade goods that Zakharians brought to Cynalon.

In the weeks that followed, the two came to spend more and more time together. She joined him at the dual weddings of Finrod and Stephanie and that of Zynara and Blod. Clearly there was much to learn about the raven-haired lady and each day Validar found something else to like about her.

When Validar had to suddenly depart due to the attack on his family, he barely was able to send a note in order to say goodbye to Gabriella. Quite surprisingly, she had followed him back to Pyris with his friend Arocken. Clearly she had similar feelings to what the noble warrior was now feeling for her.

However, in the field as he was, he was unable to return to Pyris in time to see her before she left for home with winter beginning to settle in. It seemed that now fate conspired to keep them apart. So it was quite heartening to see her here in Corunglain and in the emply of the new King himself.

However their time would be cut short once again, as Lady Gabriella informs Validar that the King is leaving in the afternoon tomorrow and that she is going with him then. She will be unable to attend the small festivities that were planned with the Guardians.

"I must say that I am greatly disappointed, my lady. We have such little time to spend together and I know not when I shall look upon your loveliness again. That thought is much worse than the enemies we must face on our mission for the King. Do you have some token that I can take with me on this campaign to keep my connection to you?"

"We shall have to make the most of this evening then. I must truly say that I do not want it to end." After the engaging meal, Validar and Gabriella take a walk about the Fortress, continuing their talks. As night settles in and the air turns colder, the two return to the room where they dined and Validar has prepared a late drink of the finest brandy he could come across in the area.

Validar will pour them both a glass and offer one to his beautiful companion. "There are many things that we could toast to, Gabriella. To a safe mission for both of us. To the new King. To the rebirth of the Kingdom. But truly there is only one thought that fills my mind at the moment. To you, my lady."

This part of the above conversation again is retconned. Gabby does not work for the King and so isn't going anywhere with him. See A Flame Rekindled in their newly told story for what really happened.

The next morning, Validar will salute the departing nobles who are beginning other fronts of the King's battle plans to defeat the humanoids. Validar is certain that the enemy is in for a severe surprise. Hopefully the city here will be safe enough with so many forces spread out at once. Granted they twarted the attacks completely, but the defenders here are weary of their recent battles. All the more important for the Guardians to succeed not only in the holding of Fort Fletcher, but also in the liberation of Stone Ridge and her capital Ardelphia.

Chareos

Later on in the evening Chareos attends the strategy meeting,

Coley wrote:
“Interesting construction. Those inside the fortress are spared most of the danger from attackers. As the King stated, a small group can defend its walls against a large number of troops. Coupled with our mages, those down in the valley are little more than target dummies.”

“I agree with Sir Corley. Now that I have seen the layout of the fortress as well as some of the surrounding area our spells can be better planned,” he states leaning on his staff. A thought soon comes to him, “Perhaps, if time warrants it, we could bring any materials with us that may be valuable to hinder the humanoids advance on the fort; Such as we did within the caverns…”

“As for our initial insertion into the Fortress, I feel we should land on one of the observation towers and then make our way down into the chamber below. It has only one way in and I would prefer keeping our rear flank covered at all times. No need to let the enemy come up behind us and catch us unaware.”

“With all due respect Lord Corley but if we are to be dealing with undead, then we may need to tread carefully. If there is any creature/spirit with such abilities that my wraith form spell grants we may have to assume things coming in from the very walls themselves!”

Not grasping totally what the young noble is saying Chareos will interject his thoughts, “If there is only one way in and out why comment all our clerics to the frontlines? Surely it would be reasonable to leave one near the middle of our force as to protect them as well, in case of any intangibles, such as Lyonessa?”

“Oh, thank you very much!” Ivy will gratefully say. “I don’t normally realize that I have that magic with me, but am very much aware when it is gone!”

“It is the very least I can do.” he adds.

Farian

To those who are attending the meeting, Farian remains quiet and ever watchful of his new comrades, until another dwarf steps forward and introduces himself.

Exposing a grin that shows his golden tooth and extending his hand in a warrior's grip, he states, “I am Farian Silverpike. My friends call me Pike for short; That is if I hand any friends,” he says quite seriously.

“Aria has mentioned that she has the task of reclaiming part our homeland. A task I would not miss for the world.” He adds thoughtfully, “If it is a safe passage in which you seek then I’m your dwarf for finding it!!!”

Before you stands a dwarf of moderate height and build with bushy black hair. His hair is as dark as night with tinges of silver appearing within it and cropped short beard. Most strangely about the dwarf is his attire. He is always dressed in black with miniumal decorations about him save for three. Upon his vest lays a single scarab and a golden ring on each of his forefingers. To those whom are attentive enough to notice the dwarf idly turns the ring on his right forefinger with his thumb.

Farian begins to listen as two humans begin to speak tactics of regaining the fort. Having been taking care of himself for so long he merely remains quiet and speaks only when spoken to. Though when Grondar asks of what may lay in store for them, Farian speaks his mind.

“If it is your wish to know what you will be dealing with then I can help with that. I am a scout of some skill and have many ways of becoming unnoticed, if you will.”

Farian lets out a snort of amusement as Sir Validar speaks of encountering a large portion of the enemy. Turning to Aria he will merely state, “An arrogant one this one is, but by the gods you have to admire it.“ He then steps forward an examines the fort plans himself, attempting to put the lay of the land within his memory.

Sadly these plans are soon dashed as Lord Sharadin explains of their intended arrival. Farian merely waits as a new plan is brewed.

After the meeting Farian will greet his fellow companions with a firm handshake, afterward he will then ask Grondar, Aria and Rat, “I’m a bit parched…. Would you care to join me for a round of Ale?” hoping that he can get to know them a little better.

Lyonessa:

Planning and preparing both the next evening's meal as well as composing her ballad keeps Lyonessa very busy. Plus, she also needs to finish copying spells before they leave. She does find the time spent with Argent and Ivy as they help to be very relaxing. It's nice to have the opportunity to actually spend time with some of the others. Chareos even comes by to help out, and Lyonessa is sure to find something for him to do.

Later on that night, since the big gathering won't be until tomorrow evening, Lyonessa enjoys a small meal and then goes outside to let Dusk get out for a bit. She revels in experiencing his world through their shared link. She will also find a place suitable for prayer to her goddess. Small prayers on the road might be acceptable, but she takes the time for a proper honoring of Mystra while she is here.

Grondar:
Validar wrote:"My own hope is that we are successful enough to defend the Fort and manage to winter elsewhere. Once the Fort is secured and the pass is blocked, the only concern is humanoids already in Stone Ridge and Ardelphia."
Grondar considers Validar's statement. "Surely someone will have to remain to defend the fort during the winter. However, this is perhaps not the best use of adventurers such as the Guardians."
Validar wrote:"You may well be correct.

"Perhaps not, but I doubt we have seen her full capability yet. I don't know if I'm a better leader, but out king's will must be carried out, and we are the ones in place to do it. Apparently Aria is recruiting some other dwarves to accompany us, and Master Finder Rat has volunteered to help as well. Whatever resources we can bring together will have to be sufficient."
Farian wrote:Exposing a grin that shows his golden tooth and extending his hand in a warrior's grip, he states, “I am Farian Silverpike.

"Well met, Farian," Grondar says with a grin. "It will be an honor working with you for the sake of our people and our King."
Acerion wrote:Attending the strategy meeting, there is much discussion about splitting the group up into small teams while leaving a larger one to act as an anchor. Acerion agrees with the idea, "I believe that will work to our advantage as we will be able to clear out much of the fortress quickly. We need to move within range of each other though, so that should one team encounter heavy resistance, they can fall back to the anchor and draw out the enemy allowing more of us to defeat them."
Validar wrote:"I like the small two-person team idea, provided we do not get separated too much. The remainder of the group can work together as an anchor point and as a mobile firing group, with missiles and magic.

"I had similar concerns," Grondar says. "The third level appears a much better location to start from as it is fairly wide open and allows access in all directions."
Farian wrote:Farian lets out a snort of amusement as Sir Validar speaks of encountering a large portion of the enemy. Turning to Aria he will merely state, “An arrogant one this one is, but by the gods you have to admire it.“ He then steps forward an examines the fort plans himself, attempting to put the lay of the land within his memory.
Farian's comment causes Grondar to smile. While it is true that Validar has vast confidence in himself, the human is very capable of holding his own under pretty much any adversity, so far as he has seen. Farian will undoubtedly learn that in time.
Chareos wrote:“With all due respect Lord Corley but if we are to be dealing with undead, then we may need to tread carefully. If there is any creature/spirit with such abilities that my wraith form spell grants we may have to assume things coming in from the very walls themselves!”
Chareos brings up a very good point. Grondar looks to Validar for his thoughts on this.
Yusef wrote:Yusef looks up at Grondar, mildly surprised by the comment.
"That is unfortunate," Grondar says, mostly to himself as Yusef takes his leave. Fortunately, the Tiefling returns with good news. "Good to hear, and thank you, Yusef. Lyonessa and Aria give us a fourth team, which allows us to work in many directions at once." Validar adds his assent, making the decision official.
Validar wrote:"Level 2 may be the most difficult area to clear as there are the most rooms and we will have to secure these one by one in an orderly fashion."
Grondar examines the map of that floor. "Perhaps the anchor group should hold the stairs, and one pair assigned to clear each of the four quadrants of the floor. The biggest difficulty would appear to lie in the multitude of stairs, as that could allow them to come from other floors, as well as moving to levels that we have already cleared. Of course, if there are intangible undead such as Chareos mentioned, then that will make it doubly difficult."

Suddenly, Lord Sharadin joins them briefly and points out the entry point he plans to use. It is certainly not the optimal position, but they will have to make do. "Well, that changes things a bit, but I think our strategy is adaptable to this change. We should focus on clearing levels 4 and 5 before moving down, starting on that side and working our way across. Two teams on each floor may do the trick, while the anchor group holds the area around the temple and the stairway on that side so that it does not get blocked."
Validar wrote:"Level 4 is not large and there are few rooms, especially considering most are associated with the temples. We will clear this area completely and then move down and continue as we originally planned. The whole place needs to be checked and re-checked before we can be certain it is safely controlled."
Grondar nods, thinking that they cannot be too careful in ensuring that all of the undead are eradicated from the fort.
Farian wrote:After the meeting Farian will greet his fellow companions with a firm handshake, afterward he will then ask Grondar, Aria and Rat, “I’m a bit parched…. Would you care to join me for a round of Ale?” hoping that he can get to know them a little better.
"I'd be happy to, Farian. Perhaps we can exchange some thoughts and ideas regarding our work to come in Hammerfall, Thunderdelve, and elsewhere. Also, perhaps you and Aria will join me for some devotions in the morning to honor the gods who keep watch over us..."

Argent:
Lyonessa wrote:"Thank you both," Lyonessa will say to Argent and Ivy as they agree to help her put together a nice meal for everyone. "I know it's not going to be anything grand, but I think everyone deserves a little break and some time together when we're not fighting for our lives."
“Your very welcomed. It’s not the first time I’ve done something like this. I made a nice victory feast when my former adventuring band conqueror Karn’s Keep. It’ll be fun.”
Sir Validar wrote:"I am certain that you will manage a remarkable meal. In any case, it is the camaraderie that will make the time together. A chance to celebrate our considerable victory and a chance to steel ourselves for the victory to come."
“My dear Sir Validar, I can assure you that it will be a magnificent meal,” Argent answers with a smile. "I assume Lady Gabriella will be attending as welll?"

Slight edit here as Argent has now already met Gabby at the ceremony.
Sherra wrote:"Oh, I didn't know I was being looked for," Sherra replies smiling. She listens to Argent's question before responding. "Sure, I wouldn't mind. It will be good for you to practice without a horde of humanoids clawing to reach you," she'll say light-heartedly.
“That’s always an advantage,” Argent agrees with a laugh.
Sherra will instruct Argent on where to best hit targets, how to account for wind and distance, but more importantly build up her confidence with using the weapon in the short time available.
Argent will listen to Sherra’s instructions as best she can.

Later that evening, Argent wanders the fortress looking for something interesting to do. On a whim, she decides to see of the fortress has a library or not. There the Invoker meets a Lord Ustev Vandevic and the two start up a conversation. Turns out that the Ustev is the son of Lord Vandevic, ruler of Vandevicsny, a town on the western coast in the Inner Kingdom that is part of the Barony of Sulescu. The two chat for several hours.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Ivy:

Although she had intended to not to be present during the strategy sessions, Ivy will pop in for a brief moment.

“I thought I would let you know about the abilities I possess as an Undead Hunter. I am resistant to most of the baneful affects that undead can cause to a victim, and I can, with concentration, even sense their presence, much like Sir Acerion is in tune with evil.”

“The Kiss of Azrella is the bane of undead and can possibly destroy them with a single hit. Furthermore, the unique ability to heal all those close to the mace, when used near undead, will harm them instead. I have to admit that I am looking forward to battling them, as these are the foe I’ve trained to defeat. As our knights are fond of saying, it will be glorious.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Later on in the day, once things have started to become quiet, Acerion will seek out Ivy. Once he finds her, he will ask, "If I might ask, my Lady Ivy, would you be inclined to join me for dinner tonight? Tomorrow evening I hear will be quite festive, and I was hoping for some time for just us tonight."
“Of course, Sir Acerion. I would be honored. I haven’t seen you much this day and wondered where you have been. Are you well?”

Sir Validar wrote:"Indeed, that is the spirit. In truth, my hope is that we will be able to crush the invasion and move on Ardelphia during the winter. The weather will be the deciding factor there, however."
"Yes, of course. I understand that winter has come earlier than usual this year. The locals were saying that this much snow so soon is uncommon. Being stuck in the fortress for a long, cold winter is not my idea of fun."
Sir Validar wrote:"As you are often the point person on our attacks, my friend, it is only reasonable that you have even more magickal power at your disposal. You turned the tide of the battle with Ember and I believe in maximizing your advantages, rather than trying to dilute them throughout your forces. It is a dangerous task, but one which suits you so well, Sir Corley."

"Fools do tend to rush in," Sir Corley chuckles in response. "Nonetheless, who am I to argue with your line of reasoning. I will continue to cut a swath through our foes, you can count on that!"
Sir Validar wrote:"I thank you for the offer of the Ogre Gauntlets. They will increase the damage that I can do in my attacks as well."
"May they serve you as well as they have me."
Farian wrote:Exposing a grin that shows his golden tooth and extending his hand in a warrior's grip, he states, "I am Farian Silverpike. My friends call me Pike for short; that is if I had any friends," he says quite seriously.
"Well met, Farian", Sir Corley will say offering his hand. "May our mission meet with great success."

Sir Corley listens as comments come after his initial recommendations. "Aye, I meant no slight to the Lady Aria when it comes to battle. Indeed, I would be hard pressed to match her pace while singing at the same time!"
Sir Validar wrote:"The information we have is that the gates are open, so unlikely that the undead are actively garrisoning the fort. The humanoids are purported to be traveling through it. Unfortunately, we have no definite information on what sort of undead we may encounter.
"That was the impression I had too, my friend. The main gates through the fortress lie wide open. The gates are either raised, or they have been damaged, possibly even destroyed. I would surmise that the orcs pass through the fortress during the day, as many undead are not active during that time. They would properly avoid it at night. The exact nature and force the enemy will be revealed when we are there."
Lord Charoes wrote:"I agree with Sir Corley. Now that I have seen the layout of the fortress as well as some of the surrounding area our spells can be better planned," he states leaning on his staff. A thought soon comes to him, "Perhaps, if time warrants it, we could bring any materials with us that may be valuable to hinder the humanoids advance on the fort; Such as we did within the caverns..."
"That is possible, Lord Chareos," Sir Corley will agree. "The faster the undead forces infesting Fort Fletcher are dealt with, the sooner we can turn our attention to the approaching orc horde. If fortune does smile upon us, we may be able to make sorties against them before they reach the Fort. Aye, if we can soften them up with magical attacks like we did in the caves, they may very well never even reach Fletcher."
Lord Chareos wrote:"With all due respect Lord Corley but if we are to be dealing with undead, then we may need to tread carefully. If there is any creature/spirit with such abilities that my wraith form spell grants we may have to assume things coming in from the very walls themselves!"
"A thing that I had not taken into consideration. Indeed, if they can move through the very walls themselves, then we to protect all our flanks. Perhaps one of the two person groups should be moved to the rear for this very contingency."
Lady Ivy wrote:"The Kiss of Azrella is the bane of undead and can possibly destroy them with a single hit. Furthermore, the unique ability to heal all those close to the mace, when used near undead, will harm them instead. I have to admit that I am looking forward to battling them, as these are the foe I've trained to defeat. As our knights are fond of saying, it will be glorious."
Sir Corley cannot help but smile at the fair Ivy's comments. "Perhaps a change in plans may be needed here. Perhaps Lady Ivy should lead the way while Sir Acerion covers her!"
Sir Validar wrote:Once the strategy session breaks, Validar will commend Sir Corley on his planning suggestions. "You have not been one to offer detailed plans before, my friend. I do not say that as a condemnation, of course, simply a truth of the matter. It always seemed like your attention was too easily diverted. I wonder if this is the effects of the Priestess' healing skills."
"I have noted this as well, these last few days. I find myself being able to focus much better than I used to. It's wonderful to be able to think clearly."

Night comes to the fortress and Sir Corley finds himself alone. Sir Validar is having dinner with the Lady Gabriella, while Sir Acerion is spending time with Lady Ivy. Everyone seems to be doing something, so Corley finds himself wandering the fortress for a time. Later, he retires to his chambers to continue cleaning his armor for the battles to come.

Next morning, he'll join his comrades in bidding farewell to those nobles who are departing. "May victory be yours," he'll say to Sir Teramar and Dame Harlena. "Teach them the folly of marching on Cynalon!"

After that, Lord Antonic and Lady Teris also depart for Fort Runnels. "I am sure that we'll make contact with you once Fort Fletcher is secured and we are ready to begin our campaign to reclaim Ardelphia. Given our relative positions, a coordinated effort amongst us will just accelerate the mission. Perhaps Lord Cavius of Rennydale can assist us as well."

“As me Pappy used to say, it ain’t braggin’ if’n you can back it up. From what I’ve seen, these humans can do just that.”

Aria doesn’t have a whole lot to add to the attack plans, not even when the human wizard worries about ghosts passing through walls and whatnot.

“If it bleeds, I can kill it.”

Farian wrote:After the meeting Farian will greet his fellow companions with a firm handshake, afterward he will then ask Grondar, Aria and Rat, "I'm a bit parched.... Would you care to join me for a round of Ale?" hoping that he can get to know them a little better.

Validar wrote:"Thank you.

Listening to Sir Validar, Yusef considers the differences between the two situations described. It would seem that their current group is somewhat unique. "An interesting analysis, Sir Validar. Perhaps that flexibility and natural changing of membership will prove to be a unique strength for this group"
Validar wrote:"I would dare say that the Guardians, man for man, are more powerful than the Seekers, although we had a much larger group with them. Still I would dare to say that the Guardians would defeat the same fiend more easily than we did that day beneath Gateway."
"From the tales I have heard and what I have seen with my own eyes, I doubt you not."
Validar wrote:"When the time is come, I will stand beside you against the fiends from Elcadan, as well as their lower-plane consorts. The Guardians were formed to oppose darkness and this is clearly an obvious foe. Your mother is as good as freed, my new friend."
"That is very encouraging, Sir Validar. I will look forward to that day."

A new dwarf has arrived and introduced himself to Grondar as Farian Silverpike. Yusef approaches and extends a hand. "Nice to meet you, Farian. I am Yusef ibn Nerita bint Falawi Al-Rashid, priest of the great traveller, Celestian. I am certain that Aria and Grondar will be most grateful for your assistance on their noble quest."
Grondar wrote:"That is unfortunate," Grondar says, mostly to himself as Yusef takes his leave. Fortunately, the Tiefling returns with good news. "Good to hear, and thank you, Yusef. Lyonessa and Aria give us a fourth team, which allows us to work in many directions at once."
"You are welcome, Grondar of Berronar," Yusef replies, not entirely certain what he was being thanked for.
Validar wrote:"Very well, I think Yusef's suggestion only makes sense if he is unable to affect undead directly. Lyonessa and Aria will make another strike team and Yusef will join the anchor group."

Yusef nods, as the decision is made. Their strategy seem sound and he will do his part to the utmost of his ability.

With the arrival of Lord Sharadin, a wrench is thrown into their planning, but the leaders seem well able to adapt. There is much agreement as ideas are bandied back and forth as they hammer out their strategy.

During the evening, Yusef stumbles upon Sir Corley, who seems to be enjoying the night air on one of the battlements at the moment. Approaching, he gives a bow to the large warrior. "Greetings, Sir Corley, I hope I am not intruding. A fine night, is it not? It seems we will be travelling and fighting together soon, and yet we just met. Would you care to tell me more of the road you travelled to reach this point in your life?"

Some time later, he pauses in the castle's courtyard to perform his devotions before retiring for the night. Next morning, he goes through his daily drills and practices before breaking his fast.

Grondar:

Ivy drops in on the strategy planning session to share some information on her abilities with regard to undead. Grondar cannot help being impressed. It seems this is truly the purpose for which her order of Undead Hunters was created. She will likely put the rest of them to shame.

The exchange between Sir Corley and Aria is rather amusing. Frankly, Grondar is not certain that he would like to hear Corley put that issue to the test, though the possibility exists that he has a pleasant singing voice.
Corley wrote:"That was the impression I had too, my friend.

"That brings up a good question. Would it be best to hit the fort during the day, when the undead may be less active but the goblin-kin may be passing through, or during the night, when the undead will likely be at full activity? Perhaps we should shoot for dawn just as the undead are retiring but the orcs and such are not yet active?"
Corley wrote:"A thing that I had not taken into consideration. Indeed, if they can move through the very walls themselves, then we to protect all our flanks. Perhaps one of the two person groups should be moved to the rear for this very contingency."

Grondar considers this issue some more. "Perhaps it would make sense to leave one of those who can use holy power against the undead with the anchor group to cover our rear and protect them. That would leave three independent teams, which we might want to increase to three people each for more punch."
Aria wrote:“I’ll try to make it, but don’t be afraid to start without me!”, Aria says with a knowing grin.
Grondar smiles calmly. "I'm not, but I may worry for your sake. Our gods are as powerful and important to us as any; neglecting them may not be in best interest of even a fine warrior such as yourself."

Chareos

As the meeting comes to a close Chareos approaches Sir Validar and Sir Corley.

“I just need a moment of your time, my friends. During the battle beneath the earth I have come to the conclusion that a quarterstaff is not always the best weapon to use. After much thought, I figured it would be best to learn how to a different weapon, perhaps a sword.

I know our time here is short but would you be willing to teach me the basics of swordsmenship; If I were to acquire a sword?”

Regardless of the Knights answer Chareos will later on find the armory and walk within it. Upon seeing the swords selections Chareos will pick out a Bastard sword of adequate balance and leave some coins in its place.

Sir Validar -

Listening to Sir Validar, Yusef considers the differences between the two situations described. It would seem that their current group is somewhat unique. "An interesting analysis, Sir Validar. Perhaps that flexibility and natural changing of membership will prove to be a unique strength for this group"

"I hope you are correct. So far it has seemed like more of a liability, as every time we assemble a force of what I consider sufficient size and ability, it manages to break apart. In the long run, the many sources of abilities and skills may truly be a considerable advantage. We seem to have many varied comrades who have ridden with us so far, including my allies in the Seekers."

"When the time is come, I will stand beside you against the fiends from Elcadan, as well as their lower-plane consorts. The Guardians were formed to oppose darkness and this is clearly an obvious foe. Your mother is as good as freed, my new friend."

"That is very encouraging, Sir Validar. I will look forward to that day."

"As will I," Validar responds simply. Another layer develops in his bid to overthrow Elcadan. This is something to develop and plan.

"Indeed, that is the spirit. In truth, my hope is that we will be able to crush the invasion and move on Ardelphia during the winter. The weather will be the deciding factor there, however."

"Yes, of course. I understand that winter has come earlier than usual this year. The locals were saying that this much snow so soon is uncommon. Being stuck in the fortress for a long, cold winter is not my idea of fun."

"It certainly has seemed to. In some ways that plays to our advantage. Remaining in the fortress all winter is not my desire as well. Certainly, there are better uses for our group than guard duty. Hopefully, there will be enough reinforcements available to us to free us from Fort Fletcher and allow us to continue our attacks."

"Fools do tend to rush in," Sir Corley chuckles in response. "Nonetheless, who am I to argue with your line of reasoning. I will continue to cut a swath through our foes, you can count on that!"

"In truth, that is what I am counting on, my friend."

"I am certain that you will manage a remarkable meal. In any case, it is the camaraderie that will make the time together. A chance to celebrate our considerable victory and a chance to steel ourselves for the victory to come."

“My dear Sir Validar, I can assure you that it will be a magnificent meal,” Argent answers with a smile. "Will your friend be attending as well?"

"I have no doubt in your abilites, milady," Validar answers, using Argent new title. "Lady Gabriella will most certainly be attending. If there are any other friends of the group here in the city, they are welcome to attend as well. However, with Sherwood's group gone and many of the nobles leaving in the morning, it will pretty much be just us."

Strategy Session:
Sir Validar greets the dwarfen scout, Farian Silverpike, when introduced. "I am Sir Validar, son of the Baron of Pyris. Welcome to the strategy meeting."

Chareos - “With all due respect Lord Corley but if we are to be dealing with undead, then we may need to tread carefully. If there is any creature/spirit with such abilities that my wraith form spell grants we may have to assume things coming in from the very walls themselves!”

The others look to him for comments. "I do not think we can approach this task from an overly wary viewpoint. There are always possibilities that an ambush or unexpected attack will occur. Everyone must be prepared at all times from all directions. With the group broken into smaller groups, we will have eyes in several directions and areas at once. I am certain that the anchor group can withstand any counter-attacks that may come their way, even without a priest in their midst."

"I would still like to clear out level 3 as quickly as possible. That is the key to moving about the place. Also the upper areas are small and likely easy to hold, but closing the gates and securing them is clearly one of the most important steps in our mission. The undead complicate the task, however, we should be able to destroy them as we advance and unless there is a concerted counter-attack organized by some leader, then they should be trying to avoid us, especially knowing Ivy's capabilities."

"We will move in on level four, then proceed to level three and clear it. That will be our base for the remaining extracation of the undead threat. From there, we will move down and close the gates, then clean out the rest of the tower."

"That is true. We cannot plan for every contingency or we would not ever finish plans and actually attack. I am confident in our abilities to adapt to the circumstances as they present themselves."

Grondar - "That brings up a good question. Would it be best to hit the fort during the day, when the undead may be less active but the goblin-kin may be passing through, or during the night, when the undead will likely be at full activity? Perhaps we should shoot for dawn just as the undead are retiring but the orcs and such are not yet active?"

"I think we should play to our own advantages which would be to attack during the day. Lord Sharadin planned to transport us there in the morning, so that seems like a good time to begin the attack."

"While this will certainly be a challenging endeavor, I do not think we need to min-max it to the ultimate. We seem to have our strengths established. We will be mobile and multi-pronged in our attacks. We have very substantial clerical powers to defeat the undead. And after battling the huge horde, even a battalion of orcs moving through the fortress should be little worry to our fighters and mages."

"I do not want to sound overconfident, but I think that the next stages of our attacks will be much more difficult than securing the fort. We will move through systematically and repeatedly to be certain we miss nothing and we will attempt to control the fortress from the humanoids as soon as we are able."

"Arriving in the morning gives us a full day to clear as much as possible and establish our own secure area, where Argent can set up her magical mansion for our first few nights' stay. Many of the humanoids also are more active at night, so there is likely to be much more 'activity' once the sun falls."

"You're starting to sound like me, my friend," Validar says with a chuckle. "That is an ambitious plan, but I like the sounds of it. I am sure Argent would agree as it would give her a chance to make good use of her speciality."

Farian lets out a snort of amusement as Sir Validar speaks of encountering a large portion of the enemy. Turning to Aria he will merely state, “An arrogant one this one is, but by the gods you have to admire it.“

Validar looks over briefly at the comment, but quickly decides that it was not said maliciously. Too many people have underestimated him and his group upon first meeting. A few of the group return knowing looks. Validar will add, "It would be a way to more quickly complete our task to be certain. It's not often that the entire enemy will group together so favorably as the humanoid horde we met encamped in the caverns below us." Validar says this with a grin, as it is obvious that all of this bantering is good-natured.

Aria -“As me Pappy used to say, it ain’t braggin’ if’n you can back it up. From what I’ve seen, these humans can do just that.”

"While I may not have stated it in the same words, I share the sentiment very much."

Grondar considers Validar's statement. "Surely someone will have to remain to defend the fort during the winter. However, this is perhaps not the best use of adventurers such as the Guardians."

"Once the horde has been defeated, then the troops that are being committed from Alfheim, more Cynalonian troops and some of the dwarves from Rockhome, will be able to defend this Fort. We will be able to receive more and more supplies and reinforcements by using the Stone Cube as they are available."

"Perhaps not, but I doubt we have seen her full capability yet. I don't know if I'm a better leader, but our king's will must be carried out, and we are the ones in place to do it. Apparently Aria is recruiting some other dwarves to accompany us, and Master Finder Rat has volunteered to help as well. Whatever resources we can bring together will have to be sufficient."

"In any case, it will bear itself out soon enough. If we are all successful then so much the better, if Hammerfall requires another tactic, then that is something that shall be addressed when the time comes, I imagine."

"The more recruits, the better. And you will certainly need more than a handful to clear the stronghold, I am certain." Sir Validar makes a point to keep an eye on the halfling known as Rat. While Bernice certainly has a soft spot in his heart, Validar is not completely trusting of halflings and their penchant for libertaing things that are not theirs from the true owners.

Sir Corley cannot help but smile at the fair Ivy's comments. "Perhaps a change in plans may be needed here. Perhaps Lady Ivy should lead the way while Sir Acerion covers her!"

"That may be a bit much, however, Ivy and Acerion's group will be the point in this case. They are the best suited for not only locating the enemy, but destroying them the most quickly."

"I have noted this as well, these last few days. I find myself being able to focus much better than I used to. It's wonderful to be able to think clearly."

"Perhaps the priestess of Azrella 'healed' something that was out of sorts. It is not unimaginable to think that one who leads with his head so often managed to sustain some injury that was unseen and unmended. In any case, it is good to hear that you feel whole again."

"Certainly, my friend. A sword is certainly the weapon of the nobility, so you would do well to take up its use. I am certain that either of us could teach you the basics and we could find ourselves with some free time once we clear Fort Fletcher and await reinforcements."

Validar too wishes the groups well on their missions. "I had not thought of adding Lord Cavius' forces to our own. I am not certain that they will be able to spare much given the situation they just cam out of themselves, but they could secure the southern borders more with some troops in order to catch any stragglers that retreat in that direction when we route them from Ardelphia."

Validar will contact the leader of the troops that reinforced them at the Vesubian Gatehouse from Rennydale and have them send a messenger back with a summary of the plans. We will contact him further when Fort Fletcher is secure and we begin to move on Ardelphia and Stone Ridge.
