New Frontiers #48

The Vesubian Gatehouse has been cleared. The refugees slowly begin to cross the bridge while preparations for their arrival are made. Bodies of the dead are rounded up and added to an ever-growing bonfire.

The two wall-top doors that lead out into the city are sealed and secured from the inside. These doors are reinforced metal that are actually mounted on the outside wall and not in the door frame itself. (The door is bigger than the opening it gives access to.)

The door opens outward and can be barred shut from the inside. The advantage to this arrangement is that the wall around the door helps prevent it from being bashed in. It gives greater strength and structural support.

The bodies of dead enemies are gathered from the towers and tossed into the courtyard. Then they are carried to the bonfires so that they can be disposed of.

Argent flies off to scout the immediate area for more signs of trouble. She returns a few minutes later, reporting that there are some humanoids in the immediate area around the Gatehouse, but they are small in numbers and don't appear organized. The Invoker then departs on her primary mission.

The towers are cleared of the enemy bodies by the time the refugees begin to arrive. The groups are directed to the two large towers and the barracks areas. As the group settles in, chores are handed out to those who are able. Young boys are sent to gather firewood to provide warmth while the women examine the kitchen and pantries. What supplies that can be salvaged are recovered. Work begins on preparing an evening meal for everyone.

In one tower, Ivy is heavily assisted by a young girl named Elaine. Another girl, Lida says she'll watch over Bella and her baby. In the other tower Grondar finds a woman named Geolin takes charge of the kitchen with the help of her children. A young boy named Ostler follows Grondar around asking what he can do to help. He's shorter than the dwarf with bright red hair and freckles.

Older boys and older men are assigned watch positions all along the Gatehouse by Orin. A few of the girls are included in the mix. Those who are weary from their ordeal simply collapse into bunks and sleep. All are thankful and grateful to be alive.

With everyone inside, the Gatehouse gates are lowered and the drawbridge is raised.

On the roof of the cellblock tower, Lord Validar mans the ballista keeping an eye out for intruders. A few goblinoids are spotted, but they do not approach too closely. One comes close enough to see the gates are closed and then runs off again.

Validar becomes aware that he is not alone. Orin slowly climbs the stairs to the rooftop.

"Milord! May I have words with you? There are things you should know about the Gatehouse!"

Assuming Validar agrees, Orin will continue.

"With the exception of the Duke's Gatehouse, as a moat spans the middle of the complex, all the Gatehouse's have the same layout. This was done so that soldiers would know their way around even if they had never been in a particular gatehouse before."

"Short of going over the walls, the only way into these complexes is the city gates and the city wall-top doors that lead into the large towers. That is where you can expect enemies to come from."

"There is a code that we use with the arrangement of the flags on this particular tower. A white flag means that all is secure. A black flag means danger. From this vantage point you can see the flags of all the Gatehouses here in Southtown."

Looking out over the city, Validar will note that none of the buildings go up higher that the top of the tower, allowing a clear view of the other Gatehouses. The Port Gatehouse is the closest one, being some two hundred yards away. No flag is flying on the Port Gatehouse.

The next closest Gatehouse is the West Gatehouse to the northeast. It is some two hundred and fifty yards away. No flags are flying there either. The only flag within visual range is on the Southern Streel Gatehouse and it is black in color.

"There are also two secrets of the Gatehouses that I will share with you. The first is known by everyone in the city. I spoke before that there were concealed bunkers for the greater populace to take refuge in during an attack. There is a bunker underneath each Gatehouse. In the middle tower there is a secret passage underneath the stairs that leads down to it."

"However, they will have sealed themselves and will not open the doors until they are certain the danger has passed. Having no way to alert them to let us in, we were forced to retreat from the city."

"Lastly, there are secret ways to exit the Gatehouse and enter the city. These are specially constructed doors that only open one way. There is a door in each tower, with the exception of the Cell Block Tower. They are at the end of the long hallways on the ground floor."

The conversation is interrupted, as the sound of metal being dragged across stone his heard. Looking around the pair spot a young boy, maybe five years old, wearing a way too large helmet. He drags a shortsword behind him. "Zert reporting for duty, sir!", the lad proudly proclaims.

Elsewhere in the complex, Dusk will fly up and land on Lyonessa's shoulder. "I can be your eyes in seeking out the enemy", it will mentally inform her. "Night is when I hunt."

Almost an hour after she departed, Argent returns. (I'll let her tell her tale.)

GM Notes:

Acerion's Pegasus can only carry him and not be encumbered. Its only takes a few more pounds to push the Pegasus into the first encumbered category, so anyone riding with Acerion will slow it down. The Pegasus will accept Lyonessa if it is tested for such.

The goblinoids made a mess of the food and water supplies. There is enough to last into tomorrow before supplies run out. Finding people to operate the gate winches is a problem. No one among the refuges, apart from Orin, is strong enough to work them.

XP's have been updated.

Current Hit Points:

Acerion - 44 of 46
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 22 of 24
Laucian - 59 of 64
Validar - 72 of 76

Now what?

Argent:
"Now you DID say that it was YOUR orc," Validar will retort.
"Well, if we were to follow that logic," Argent will say with her charming smile, "then when I say that you are my lord, that would mean that you were my lord."

The Invoker takes off on her initial scouting flight. Some orcs and goblins are found, but not many and none look organized. Then it's off on her trip to the Duke's Fortress.

Argent frantically flies back to the Vesubian Gatehouse and lands near Lord Validar.

"Validar!", she cries out. "We must do something and we must do it now! There's a large gathering of orcs in a park in the north part of town. It looks like they are getting ready to perform a mass sacrifice of humans!!"

After catching her breath, Argent will relate her adventures.

"I flew out over the river and followed it north to avoid detection. As I drew closer I could see the Star-Shaped Fortress of the Duke. There must be thousands of humanoids attacking it! But they have yet to penetrate the inner walls."

"The worst danger lay outside the fortress walls on the land outside the city. This is where the catapult fire I spotted before was coming from. The situation is even more dire than we thought. These catapults were huge in size and were being operated by giants! They stood twenty feet tall and had skin as black as coal!"

"I pelted a group of them with an Ice Storm, but they withstood it. Three of the catapults were close enough for me to entangle them in a Web Spell and so I did. By this time they were throwing spears at me, but my magical cloak fooled them and they missed me. The Web was very tenuous, but I ignited it with Agannazar's Scorcher. The web went up in flames, taking the three catapults with it. The pitch that they coated their flaming bombardment with was ignited and it triggered a small explosion."

"From the looks of it, I destroyed three catapults, but none of the enemy. The flames didn't seem to hurt them at all! There were at least thirty giants! I cast my last Magic Missile at one of the giants, but even that was not enough to bring it down."

"My attack spells spent, I began to fly back, taking a circular route over the city. I flew over the Green Valley district and their gatehouse had hundreds of men in it fighting off invaders. The story was the same at the Northern Streel Gatehouse."

"While I was in that area, I spotted a large concentration of humanoids in a park. There were at least a hundred orcs with maybe that many humans held captive in chains. The leaders all wore eye patches and as I watched they began some kind of foul ritual. The first of the prisoners were taken to benches and then had their throats slit while the ones with eye patches chanted. Dozens will die unless we do something to save them!"

"I saw numerous humanoids in the streets, but nothing that appeared organized. The Gatehouses that are used to separate the north and south part of the city seem to be unoccupied. They are just used to allow access. I didn't see guards there, but many humanoids were passing through."
I am an Invoker of no small power.

The situation is dire...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Lord Validar is pleased as the Vesubian Gatehouse is closed up tightly and the refugees are all settled in. Work is completed on disposing of the dead bodies and watches and communications runners are setup as well as the kitchen and some well-deserved meals for the refugees.

As Lord Validar mans the ballista he hears someone approach. Orin slowly climbs the stairs to the rooftop.

"Milord! May I have words with you? There are things you should know about the Gatehouse!"

"Of course, Orin. Please inform me what you know. All information is vital."

"With the exception of the Duke's Gatehouse, as a moat spans the middle of the complex, all the Gatehouse's have the same layout. This was done so that soldiers would know their way around even if they had never been in a particular gatehouse before."

"That is a wise tactical decision and one that will also make our knowledge of the city much easier."

Orin describes that use of the flag communication system and looking at the nearby gatehouses only gives bad news. Two of them have no flags at all and therefore likely have completely fallen. The other that can be seen is black and therefore they are under attack. Validar will be certain to raise a white flag here on this tower to let anyone nearby know that the Gatehouse is safe.

Lord Validar listens intently as Orin explains about the underground bunkers. "So there are people below us perhaps? Possibly soldiers? We could use them for more defense of this location, especially as we strike out from here in our own attacks."

"Lastly, there are secret ways to exit the Gatehouse and enter the city. These are specially constructed doors that only open one way. There is a door in each tower, with the exception of the Cell Block Tower. They are at the end of the long hallways on the ground floor."

"I see. So they are one-way sally ports of a sense. That is very good to know, both for another means of attack and for possible safety. hank you kindly for the information, Orin. It has been most..."

The conversation is interrupted, as the sound of metal being dragged across stone his heard. Looking around the pair spot a young boy, maybe five years old, wearing a way too large helmet. He drags a shortsword behind him. "Zert reporting for duty, sir!", the lad proudly proclaims.

Lord Validar will approach the lad, removing his helmet and tossling his hair with a gauntleted hand. "At ease, Zert," he will say with a smile.

Lord Validar will ask Orin to explain the way to find the hidden bunker in detail and ask him to remain here to continue to keep watch. Then he will head down to the bunker as quickly as he can. He will pound on the door as loudly as he can and proclaim, "This is Lord Validar of the Barony of Pyris. This Gatehouse is secure and we need your help with its continued defense!"

Change of plans...

Lord Validar -

"Well, if we were to follow that logic," Argent will say with her charming smile, "then when I say that you are my lord, that would mean that you were my lord."

"And wouldn't that have a wide range of meanings," Validar will retort. "That's the trouble with logic sometimes."

Validar is noticeably surprised by this revelation. "What details can you tell me, Argent?"

Argent relates her tale telling of the approach to the fortress and the bombardment from across the river, by Fire Giants, no less. She was apparently somewhat successful in stopping the bombardment and managed to get away without injury.

"Very good. I am pleased that you were at least somewhat successful in halting the bombardment of the Fortress. Although the mention of what are most likely Fire Giants bodes ill for this battle. I have heard that they are very formidable foes. But then so are we."

"From the looks of it, I destroyed three catapults, but none of the enemy. The flames didn't seem to hurt them at all! There were at least thirty giants! I cast my last Magic Missile at one of the giants, but even that was not enough to bring it down."

"That will only delay the attacks, but delay them you did. We will need to plan an assault against these giants sooner than later. Tell me more."

Argent then relates her return flight and the grisly scene she encountered in the Northtown District. Validar sighs in realization as his plans have been suddenly altered due to this situation. He nods a few times without interrupting as she continues to relates the details. Argent also confirms that the West Gatehouse is no longer being defended.

"Very good, Argent of Mystra," Validar will respond. "You have done your tasks this night. Now, I would ask you to conjure your magical mansion in the far corner of the courtyard to be used as a secure place for our spellcasters to rest and regain their spells."

"Then you may retire for the evening. Try to get a good rest as we will need your skills anew in the morning. This battle will certainly not be completed by then."

Lord Validar will have the communications runners send for all of the Guardians to meet on the Gatehouse walls immediately. Once assembled, Validar will address them all.

"Argent has found a number of disturbing bits of information. But none of them should weaken our resolve to win this war. There are Fire Giants attacking the Duke's Fortress. At least thirty of them. That will be a battle alone to defeat them. Fortunately, they are across the moat as yet and Argent destroyed three of their massive catapults."

"But even more urgent is a group orcs in the Northtown district that have captured many of Corunglain's people and are sacrificially killing them all one by one. We must move out at once to stop this horror."

"However, we must also defend this location. Therefore, we will not all be going: Po, Ivy, Grondar, Argent, Laucian and Sherra will remain behind. Those with missile weapons should man the towers along with the refugees. Try to relax a little while we are gone, this night may be quite long before we are done. But do not pass up shots on any humanoids which get too close. Every one we kill is one more less to face us later."

Lord Acerion and Chareos will delay their counterattack on the Duke's Fortress for the moment. Lyonessa will fly with Acerion, and using the Wand of Lightning, will assault the orcs there and attempt to drive them off. There are only about one hundred according to Argent, but this strike is likely to draw more to the area."

"The remaining four of us, myself, Lord Corley, Arocken and Chareos will ride through the West Gatehouse killing what we can along the way and meet you two there as quickly as we can for support. I am still not certain how we will be able to transport over a hundred chained refugees back here safely without drawing attention, but that is a concern for that time. Every moment we delay will result in one more death."

"Acerion and Lyonessa will head straight there as quickly as possible. Argent can tell you exactly where it is. Hit them with the Wand of Lightning right away. Do not wait for us. That may save several lives alone. Concentrate on the leaders."

"If there are no questions, then let us ride. Archers, we may require some cover fire as we approach the West Gatehouse. Any humanoids you can drop as we ride on would be appreciated. Let us ride!"

Shouldn't Validar have started to regenerate by now?

Laucian

After dealing with the corpses of the fallen humaniods, he heads down towards the rest of the Guardians, when the cry of their Leader's name is called forth and Argent soon lands nearby.

As they listen to her tale Laucian can't but help to pick out several words within her tale that bother him.

The first of the prisoners were taken to benches and then had their throats slit while the oneswith eye patches chanted. Dozens will die unless we do something to save them!"
"The orcs that you saw are most likely priests of their foul orc god. Legend says that The Lord of the Elves cut out his eye in a battle between the two, it is why orcs hold elves in such hatred. They seek to gain his favor in the coming battle."
"It will be done as you say. I will see to arming those who are willing with bows as well as pass out quivers amongst us."

Once the meeting is finished Laucian will move to the refugees and ask whom among them will stand the wall with them. For those who do he will proceed to the armory and hand out bows and quivers, giving those who accept a crash course in archery.

Once completed Laucian will head toward the Tower walls and wait for the Gates to be opened for Validar's ride. Taking up his bow he will lead the orc (humaniod) targets that wish to block their procession. Paying the humanoid's trouble with an arrow in the chest.

Chareos

As the night commences Lord Validar calls for a meeting of the Guardians. Once there Chareos listens to the situation as it has unfolded as well as the plans for the assault on the park.

I am still not certain how we will be able to transport over a hundred chained refugees back here safely without drawing attention, but that is a concern for that time. Every moment we delay will result in one more death."

Not objecting nor having any questions about the assault Chareos will merely mount up and wait for the order to move out. As he sits on his mount he will think on what he was told and begins to try to steel himself for the coming battle, though being greatly outnumbered.

Corley:

Once the citizens of Corunglain are all within the Gatehouse, Corley will lower the portcullis and raise the drawbridge. Seeing that the others have dealt with the dead, Corley will see to it that the stables are cleared so that the mounts can be properly stabled. While tending to that task, a new crisis arises.

Lord Validar wrote:"Argent has found a number of disturbing bits of information. But none of them should weaken our resolve to win this war. There are Fire Giants attacking the Duke's Fortress. "But even more urgent is a group orcs in the Northtown district that have captured many of Corunglain's people and are sacrificially killing them all one by one. We must move out at once to stop this horror."
"Indeed, Lord Validar!", Corley will cry out. "Let us swoop in and liberate these unfortunates!"

Lord Validar wrote:"The remaining four of us, myself, Lord Corley, Arocken and Chareos will ride through the West Gatehouse killing what we can along the way and meet you two there as quickly as we can for support. "We will charge forth on our stallions and trample any opposition that bars our path! Let the trampled bodies of the enemy form a road to freedom!"
Lord Validar wrote:"If there are no questions, then let us ride. Archers, we may require some cover fire as we approach the West Gatehouse. Any humanoids you can drop as we ride on would be appreciated. Let us ride!"
Feeling the anticipation of yet another battle, Lord Corley will retrieve his mount. The lance will be left behind as it may only be a hindrance. Instead, Corley will ride with his horseman's mace in hand and be ready to bash any enemy who dares get too close.

"It would probably be better for me to create the dwelling later when all the spell casters are ready for sleep. Being just able to cast this enchantment, its duration will be short compared to the ones created by Sherwood and Kharyna. If cast now, it may expire before everyone inside was fully rested."

"Given all that I have seen, I doubt I will be able to sleep peacefully. My heart is still racing and I do not feel tired. I will make myself useful here and when ready create the house to rest in. Is that agreeable?"
Lord Validar wrote:"Argent has found a number of disturbing bits of information. But none of them should weaken our resolve to win this war. There are Fire Giants attacking the Duke's Fortress. "There are still four more working catapults there. The river is wide where they are at and the giants cannot easily reach the fortress. The main battle is at the city side of the Duke's Gatehouse. The river surrounds most of the fortress, limiting ways it can be directly attacked."

Argent listens quietly as the rest of the plans are laid out. Her magic spent, Argent knew she wouldn't be involved in this.

Before he departs, Argent will speak a few words to Lord Validar. "Be safe, Lord Validar. I will watch for your return with the others."

Argent will be on the tower top watching as the riders get ready to depart. Seeing Laucian handing out bows and arrows, Argent decides to join in. She'll experimentally pick up a short bow and tug at the string. Fortunately, her Strength spell is still in action and will be for many more hours.

"How do I use this?", Argent will ask Laucian.

Once given her lesson, Argent will be ready to fire arrows at any enemies she sees.

Lord Validar -

"While I was in that area, I spotted a large concentration of humanoids in a park. There were at least a hundred orcs with maybe that many humans held captive in chains. The leaders all wore eye patches and as I watched they began some kind of foul ritual.

"A pity he did not manage to get both of them," Validar will say in response to Laucian's explanation. "The favor of their foul god will not help them this day. We will be certain to see to that!"

"Those with missile weapons should man the towers along with the refugees. Try to relax a little while we are gone, this night may be quite long before we are done. But do not pass up shots on any humanoids which get too close. Every one we kill is one more less to face us later."

"It will be done as you say. I will see to arming those who are willing with bows as well as pass out quivers amongst us."

"Very well. Any additional assistance would be welcomed. We should move stores of arrows to those towers 2nd level in order to have more access to them without endangering them to seige engine fire, since there are so few archers for the walls."

Corley - "We will charge forth on our stallions and trample any opposition that bars our path! Let the trampled bodies of the enemy form a road to freedom!"

"A fine testament my friend. Perhaps you will not need a bard at all, but manage to fill that role yourself," Validar says with a grin. The momentary light-heartedness does not overshadow the grimness of the battle they are currently fighting.

Argent- "Fire Giants? Yes, that does make sense given that fire didn’t harm them. I should have realized that myself."

"Indeed. My ancestors have told stories of battles with Fire Giants as have the stories of Victor the First. I have read those and devoured the information within since I was taught to read."

Argent - "It would probably be better for me to create the dwelling later when all the spell casters are ready for sleep.

"I see. That does make sense. A fine suggestion, Argent. I agree with your counsel. Do not tire yourself needlessly however, we have much need of your considerable talents in the morning. Indeed as soon as possible."

"There are still four more working catapults there. The river is wide where they are at and the giants cannot easily reach the fortress. The main battle is at the city side of the Duke's Gatehouse. The river surrounds most of the fortress, limiting ways it can be directly attacked."

"The remaining catapults are an important target then. We need to give as much relief to the Duke's Fortress. If they were relieved completely this battle would turn in our favor for certain. I do recall the configuration from previous visits and fortunately it is not susceptible to arrow fire from the far side, but the Duke's Gate being attacked is certainly a cause for concern. The city is even now nearly overrun and where there is not battle it is only because the enemy has already triumphed there."

Before he departs, Argent will speak a few words to Lord Validar. "Be safe, Lord Validar. I will watch for your return with the others."

Validar considers her words for a moment, as he mounts his warhorse, Havok. "Safety seems far from the condition we are about to enter, my lady. However, be certain that I have no intention but for all of us to return alive. I have become quite difficult to kill," he will say simply.

With that he will slam down the visor to his helmet and signal the gates and portcullis to be opened. He will use his longsword, much like Corley leaving the lances behind, for ease of striking and for mobility.

Oran:
Lord Validar listens intently as Oran explains about the underground bunkers. "So there are people below us perhaps? Possibly soldiers? We could use them for more defense of this location, especially as we strike out from here in our own attacks."
"There should be people down there. Much like the group you have here, the young, the old, and those unsuited for battle. The bunker would have been sealed long before soldiers would have retreated there. It was a refuge for non-combatants, not those who could fight."

When it becomes clear that Lord Validar is going to attempt to communicate with those inside, Oran add, "That will do you no good, milord. The bunker is sealed behind several stone doors that are dropped into place from the inside. There are small pipes that feed air to the bunkers built into the towers above them. Included among them is a larger pipe to drop messages down into the bunker. A password is set up and changed daily. It is recorded down in each bunker, but known only in the memory of those in command above. Without this password, those down below will not come out, unless they are running out of supplies."

On the location of the park in North Town, Orin will say, "It is easy to locate. Take the road leading north from here and it will take you to the West Gatehouse. From there, take the right hand road and it will lead directly to the park."
Try it and find out!

Laucian
While handing out bows and quivers to those willing to defend their lands, Laucian can't help put notice Argent pick up a shortbow.

Walking towards her he will explain, "It is not hard; here let me show you." Taking the bow in hand he will show her the proper stance , as well as the fastest way to nock an arrow with minimum skill. "When you have your target in sight do not jerk your hands. Slowly release it as though you were playing a lute or harp."

If she takes a few mock shots on her bow Laucian will give her tips the best he can due to the limited time. He will also add, "Try your best to lead the target and do not aim as high as I do. It may be best if you stand near Sherra as she is more accustomed to the shortbow than I."

Lyonessa:

with Dusk:

Elsewhere in the complex, Dusk will fly up and land on Lyonessa's shoulder. "I can be your eyes in seeking out the enemy", it will mentally inform her. "Night is when I hunt."

"That will be most helpful my friend," Lyonessa will say to Dusk. She will also try to express her gratitude mentally and emotionally to her trusted familiar. "There will be much need of your assistance this night."

at the meeting:

Lord Acerion and Chareos will delay their counterattack on the Duke's Fortress for the moment. Lyonessa will fly with Acerion, and using the Wand of Lightning, will assault the orcs there and attempt to drive them off. There are only about one hundred according to Argent, but this strike is likely to draw more to the area."

"Acerion and Lyonessa will head straight there as quickly as possible. Argent can tell you exactly where it is. Hit them with the Wand of Lightning right away. Do not wait for us. That may save several lives alone. Concentrate on the leaders."

After hearing Argent's grim news and Validar's change in the plans, Lyonessa will get the Wand of Lightning and smile at Chareos, "Take care of yourself out there."

She will approach Acerion and wait for him so they may go to his pegasus together. As she does, she only hopes they will be in time to save those people from such a horrible fate. "I am ready, Lord Acerion," she will say to the paladin. "Let us hope your pegasus finds me acceptable."

Corley and Validar:

"We will charge forth on our stallions and trample any opposition that bars our path! Let the trampled bodies of the enemy form a road to freedom!"

"A fine testament my friend. Perhaps you will not need a bard at all, but manage to fill that role yourself," Validar says with a grin. The momentary light-heartedness does not overshadow the grimness of the battle they are currently fighting.

"Don't be so quick to dismiss the talents of a bard," Lyonessa will reply lightheartedly. "Although if you are looking to change your profession Lord Corley, I know several good teachers you could employ."

Lord Validar -

Orin - "There should be people down there. Much like the group you have here, the young, the old, and those unsuited for battle. The bunker would have been sealed long before soldiers would have retreated there. It was a refuge for non-combatants, not those who could fight."

"I see. I had hoped we might find some defensive capabilities there."

"An interesting system. But one that does us no good this night it seems. In any case, at least we do not have more refugees to defend. This next group may be straining our abilities to the limits."

On the location of the park in North Town, Orin will say, "It is easy to locate. Take the road leading north from here and it will take you to the West Gatehouse. From there, take the right hand road and it will lead directly to the park."

"Very good, Orin. Thank you for your assistance. We will need you to work with the Guardians that remain to defend this place while we are gone. Also we may be returning with many more people, if we can get them to this location."

"I did not mean to infer that I was dismissing your talents, Lyonessa of Mystra. It is a bit of a joke between Lord Corley and myself, that might be better shared at a more light-hearted time. Still he does seem to have some natural talent, does he not?"

As soon as the gates are opened and the portcullis is raised, Lord Validar will lead the group out into the city. He sees Lord Acerion and Lyonessa wing off overhead and he raises his sword to their honor. With luck, the rest of them will arrive simply to finish driving off those evil marauding scum.

Ivy:

The call to cross the bridge finally comes and the refugees move forth. Ivy brings up the rear gently carrying the baby with her. Ivy follows those in front of her into the nearest tower. Once Bella is resting comfortably, Ivy will hand her the baby. Fortunately, one of the other women, Lida by name, volunteers to watch over the two.

"Thank you. That will be a big help."

Another woman, Elaine, comes to help out with the kitchen. The place is a mess, but it will suffice. Ivy will instruct that the food that has been spoiled be saved.

"I can cast a Purify spell on it in the morning and will be usable once more. We can't afford to waste anything at this time."

In short order, the kitchen is functioning again. Elaine is helping make the meals and some of the smaller children are handling other tasks such as fetching firewood. Everything seems to be running smoothly for a change.

A runner arrives saying that my presence is requested elsewhere. After receiving directions, Ivy will join up with the others.

Ivy is horrified by what she hears from Validar about Argent's scouting trip. Plans are laid out and it appears that Ivy is going to be left behind. She has mixed emotions over this, but decides that it is the proper course of action.

Before the group breaks up on their individual tasks Ivy speak up. "May the Blue Lady bless us all in this noble endeavor. May as many be saved as possible!"

"Lord Validar, I have a spell that may be of use in your ride. I can cast Silence on one of you and your ride will go unheard by those provided you ride close enough together. The magic should last only ten minutes or so. It would be best to cast it right before you leave."

"The goblinoids were into the food supplies and they are low. I estimate that they will only last until tomorrow. Not even that long if you return with more people. I would suggest that those of us who can pray for Purify Food and Create Food spells to handle the load."

Before the riders leave, Ivy will say her farewell to Lord Acerion. She prays that he'll return safely from this dangerous, but necessary, ride.

After that, Ivy will return to the tower to check on how the people are doing. She explains that she'll be out on guard duty for a while. Then she'll join those up on the tower and await the riders return.

Sherra:

Sherra is a bit disappointed that she will not be going, but keeps such thoughts to herself. She has never enjoyed the task of being a defender and prefers the more active attack roles any day. Still, she understands these people need protection and the sheer solidity of the gatehouse may not be enough. She may have a small chance to pick off wandering targets that come within her bow range before the night is over.

Upon heading to the tower, she'll make sure that plenty of arrows are staged in a number of locations for easy reach. After that, she'll prepare to cover the riders as they leave the safety of the gatehouse. While she waits, she catches part of a conversation between Laucian and Argent.
If she takes a few mock shots on her bow Laucian will give her tips the best he can due to the limited time. He will also add, "Try your best to lead the target and do not aim as high as I do. It may be best if you stand near Sherra as she is more accustomed to the shortbow than I."
If approached, Sherra will smile at Argent and happily pick up where Laucian left off in giving her a quick course in the usage of the bow. She doesn't say much else as it appears she is lost in other thoughts, but will be more than attentive once the riders depart.

Acerion:

Argent's report is grim indeed, but the spotting of fire giants perks up the paladin's ears. "Now there is a worthy foe," Acerion will say.

There is apparently some sort of mass sacrifice about to commene which changes Validar's plans. Acerion nods grimly in understanding of what needs to be done.

"Another time then, Chareos," Acerion will say as he clasps wrists first with him and then with Validar and Corley before departing. He turns to find Lyonessa already there waiting on him.

She will approach Acerion and wait for him so they may go to his pegasus together. As she does, she only hopes they will be in time to save those people from such a horrible fate. "I am ready, Lord Acerion," she will say to the paladin. "Let us hope your pegasus finds me acceptable."

"Let us be off then, songstress. The fate of these people fall to our shoulders once more," Acerion will say as he leads the way. He will stop briefly as Ivy approaches and turn to Lyonessa, "I'll be just a moment."

Before the riders leave, Ivy will say her farewell to Lord Acerion. She prays that he'll return safely from this dangerous, but necessary, ride.

"Fear not, fair Ivy," Acerion will say reassuredly. "We go with honor and blessings of our gods to save these people, and in that we can not know defeat." He will take her hand gently in his and place it upon his armored breast. "As long as this beats, I will return to you." With a kiss upon her hand he turns and strides back quickly to where his pegasus awaits.

"Time again to fly," Acerion says to his faithful mount and will allow time for Lyonessa to approach and the pair to get familiar with each other. Hopefully within short order, they can mount up.

Acerion will salute back and then set himself to prepare to face another ravaging horde of humanoids. He wonders if they will be more fanatical since they are in the throng of a religious ceremony. Making sure Lyonessa is seated as safely as she can be, he directs his pegasus to where Argent said she spotted the assembly.

Battle for Corunglain

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:
In the other tower Grondar finds a woman named Geolin takes charge of the kitchen with the help of her children. A young boy named Ostler follows Grondar around asking what he can do to help. He's shorter than the dwarf with bright red hair and freckles.
It is pleasant to see the refugees getting settled into their new circumstances. Grondar thanks Geolin for stepping forward and taking on this responsibility. When Grondar realizes that he has grown a tail, he stops to chat with the boy.

"You said your name was Ostler? Fine name," he says with a smile. "Would you care to help me with the work here? I could use a messenger to carry messages to the others as needed. Is that something you think you could do?" If he is willing, Grondar will first send him to notify Ivy that Geolin has taken charge of the kitchen.

When Validar's call to assemble comes, Grondar shows up quickly and listens to the disturbing news. At least the destruction of the catapults is good to hear, but the rest bodes only continued strife.
Laucian wrote:"The orcs that you saw are most likely priests of their foul orc god. Legend says that The Lord of the Elves cut out his eye in a battle between the two, it is why orcs hold elves in such hatred. They seek to gain his favor in the coming battle."
The mention of the orc god draws but one word from Grondar, "Gruumsh". It is clear from his tone that Grondar has nothing but antipathy for this particular diety.

Validar announces plans to begin attacks on the forces that Argent discovered. These plans include splitting up the group; a dangerous move in some lights, but also necessary under the circumstances. He can't help but wonder if he wouldn't be more useful with his speed in the attacking group, but it isn't his call to make.

Once the meeting has concluded, Grondar will get help in locating any crossbow bolts that might be in the gatehouse armories and stashing them in useful places along the walls. Noting that Laucian is teaching some of the refugees to use bows, Grondar will offer to teach crossbow use to those who might find it a more convenient weapon [assuming there are some crossbows in the armories for them to use].
Ivy wrote:"Lord Validar, I have a spell that may be of use in your ride. I can cast Silence on one of you and your ride will go unheard by those provided you ride close enough together. The magic should last only ten minutes or so. It would be best to cast it right before you leave."
The time comes for the warriors to ride out. Ivy's suggestion brings one to Grondar's mind. "The only spell I have that is likely to last long enough to be of use is Protection From Evil. I would be willing to cast it on any member of your group, at your preference."
Ivy wrote:"The goblinoids were into the food supplies and they are low. I estimate that they will only last until tomorrow. Not even that long if you return with more people. I would suggest that those of us who can pray for Purify Food and Create Food spells to handle the load."
"I would have to agree with Ivy's assessment from what I have seen in the other tower. I will also pray in the morning for as many of those spells as possible."

As Lord Validar's group heads out through the gate, Grondar takes to patrolling the walls with his crossbow. With his magic Boots, he can get from one end to the other quickly. Meanwhile, Ostler provides a way for him to keep in contact with Geolin and the other refugees in the tower.

Lord Validar -

Before the group breaks up on their individual tasks Ivy speak up. "May the Blue Lady bless us all in this noble endeavor. May as many be saved as possible!"

"Lord Validar, I have a spell that may be of use in your ride. I can cast Silence on one of you and your ride will go unheard by those provided you ride close enough together. The magic should last only ten minutes or so. It would be best to cast it right before you leave."

"That may help on our approach and also not draw extra attention on our way. We used a similar tactic often with the Seekers. Can you cast your spell on an item, such as a stone or perhaps an arrow that Arocken can shoot into their midst? That would help to cut off the abilities of any shamans."

Validar will take an arrow from Arocken and give it to Ivy and then give Arocken the instructions to hit one of the leaders or shamans with it once we get close enough.

"The goblinoids were into the food supplies and they are low. I estimate that they will only last until tomorrow. Not even that long if you return with more people. I would suggest that those of us who can pray for Purify Food and Create Food spells to handle the load."

"I would have to agree with Ivy's assessment from what I have seen in the other tower. I will also pray in the morning for as many of those spells as possible."

"That is typical for those disgusting creatures. I am not surprised. But if you can save any of the food supply that would be excellent. I had figured in my plans that the clerics would be needed to help feed these people until the battle is over and perhaps even after that some help will be needed. We do not know how the city will be left when this battle is completed."

The time comes for the warriors to ride out. Ivy's suggestion brings one to Grondar's mind. "The only spell I have that is likely to last long enough to be of use is Protection From Evil. I would be willing to cast it on any member of your group, at your preference."

"I will refrain myself, but for Arocken, Chareos and Corley, it may prove quite beneficial. I would suggest Chareos, since he is the lightest armored of those likely to be in direct combat."

Argent's report is grim indeed, but the spotting of fire giants perks up the paladin's ears. "Now there is a worthy foe," Acerion will say.

"Indeed. That battle will be a fierce on and one which we must well prepare for. I look forward as well to such a combat."

As Validar rides out of the gate, he will ride ahead of Arocken's 'Arrow of Silence' range and call out to the Guardians on the tower. "Be ready for your own attack to come when we return." He does not add any more, allowing the others to reach him and he leads the Guardians soundlessly towards the West Gatehouse.

Post Continued:

The Gatehouse:

The Guardians are preparing to launch a rescue mission to a park in the Northtown District. There, foul priests of the orc god Gruumsh are preparing a mass sacrifice of humans!

While Validar, Chareos, Corley, and Arocken prepare to begin their ride. Lyonessa and Acerion take off on the Pegasus. Weighed down with two riders, the Pegasus is just as fast as the riders below, so they'll be able to keep pace.

Upon the battlements, there is a flurry of activity. Extra bolts and arrows are brought forth to be used in the battle to come. A few of the refugees join the Guardians in the defense of the fortress. With the exception of Orin, none have any experience with these weapons.

Several young boys serve as runners for the group, carrying messages back and forth. Ostler serves as the messenger for Grondar.

The doors to the wall top level of the Cell block tower are left open, as that building does not have away to get down below. This allows the forces to move freely among the long outer city walls.

A few goblinoids have been spotted outside the Gatehouse walls. Arrows and crossbow bolts are sent toward them chasing most away, but bringing a few of the enemy down.

Ivy casts a Silence spell on one of Arocken's arrows while Grondar casts Protection from Evil on Chareos. The inner gate is opened and the inner portcullis risen. More humanoids can be seen gathering outside the gate in spite of the missiles being fired upon them from above.

Finally, the area is cleared enough for the riders to depart. The outer gate is raised and the horses are spurred on!

Lord Validar leads the charge out of the gate followed by Lord Corley, Arocken, and then Chareos. The war horses trample those foolish enough to stand before them and the lords' weapons drive the others away. The way is cleared and the riders charge down the road towards the West Gatehouse complex.

Once the riders have cleared the outer portcullis, Po lets it drop at Orin's direction. As the gate begins to drop, a group of orcs rushes forward. Four of the creatures manage to make it inside before the gate drops. Two others were not as fortunate and were impaled by the portcullis. Their horrific screams pierce the night before being permanently silenced.

The surviving four orcs clear the inner portcullis before it can be dropped. They rush Ivy and Grondar.

Those up on the walls have numerous targets to choose from as more orcs, goblins, and hobgoblins emerge from the buildings in the area and advance on the gatehouse.

GM Notes:

There are 4 orcs in the courtyard advancing on Ivy and Grondar. They were there to cast the spells on the riders. Everyone else should have been up on the wall and tower tops. There's around twenty or so of the enemy in the area outside the walls, so plenty of targets for everyone!

The Riders:

After clearing the Vesubian Gatehouse, the riders begin their trek north. More humanoids of various races-- primarily orcs, goblins, and hobgoblins although a few bugbears and trolls are seen-- are encountered.

Lord Validar slashes many a foe along the way, downing most with his blade. Lord Corley wields a horseman's mace and meets with some success. Those among the enemy he does hit don't get up, but he misses frequently.

Behind the two lords, Arocken fires arrows from his horse with surprising accuracy. The three serve to clear the way as Chareos brings up the rear unimpeded.

Overhead, Acerion and Lyonessa fly ahead on the Pegasus who does not mind her presence. Dusk flies ahead of them and thanks to her familiar's enhanced senses is aware of what is happening around them.

Back on the ground, the riders can see the West Gatehouse up ahead. As Argent indicated earlier, all the gates are open and no beings can be seen up in the battlements.

The riders enter the Gatehouse unhindered. The bodies of fallen defenders are still strewn about. A few trolls are spotted eaten corpses along the way. Numerous rats, along with a few giant centipede-like creatures are seen too.

The riders depart the West Gatehouse as easily as they entered it. Most foes on the ground are too surprised by their sudden and silent appearance to provide any sort of organized resistance. Most get trampled and a few brought down by weapons.

The park comes into view up ahead. It is a wide open area about the size of four city blocks. Trees and walkways surround the area. A large fountain dominates the middle of the park and several statues of famous Corunglain citizens are present.

A horde of orcs can be seen surrounding a smaller group of humans. Park benches are being used as makeshift altars where captured humans are laid upon and then cut letting them bleed to death. The area around these benches runs red with blood.

The stretch that is being used has eight benches in it, four on each side of the fifteen foot wide walkway. The humans have been broken up into two groups, one on each side of the walkway. Numerous orcs push the next victim forward after the previous one has bled out.

Walking back and forth in the walkway between the benches is a trio of imposing orcs. The leader of this group is easy to tell as he is doing the most shouting and is directing the troops and priests. This orc is wearing black plate mail and the symbol of an eye has been drawn on his breastplate in blood. His left eye is missing.

The other two orcs here are also wearing plate mail armor, but only one is missing his left eye. All three orcs are heavily armed.

Once in range, about 150 yards or so, Lyonessa invokes the magic in the wand. A bolt of lightning streaks forth, lighting up the night. It strikes the head orc and his henchmen, but none of them fall. After striking the three orcs, the bolt hits the stone walkway and rebounds upward. It strikes two orcs on the rebound and both of them drop.

The black ceremony has been interrupted and the chanting stops. The orcs look up and spot the white pegasus in the night sky. Spears are thrown towards the noble creature, but they all fall short.

The riders enter the park and can see the mob of orcs up ahead. The scene is chaotic to say the least.

GM Notes:

Both the riders and the pegasus are about 150 yards away from the scene. The mounts can close this distance in half a round, so the riders may get one attack in the first round of combat depending on what you do.

There are orcs everywhere, so finding a target is not a problem.

Current Hit Points:

Acerion - 44 of 46
Grondar - 47 of 52
Havoc - 22 of 24
Laucian - 59 of 64

Acerion:

Keeping pace with Validar and the riders on the ground, Acerion makes sure that they do not become surrounded by those foes on the ground. The riders indeed prove to be too fast and, with the aid of magic, the humanoids barely even recognize that his companions are among them until they are past. Acerion knows time is of the essence, and is the reason that they don't stop, but it still churns up feelings inside of him that there will be lingering atrocities commited well into the night, and maybe beyond.

Thanks to Lyonessa's familiar, she's able to point out things at a distance before Acerion can see them himself. As he begins to make out the gruesome ceremony below, she unleashes a bolt from her borrowed wand. It seems to do little to the mass of orcs, but he doesn't believe the reason for that is because her aim was off.

As they get closer, Acerion knows his pegasus is beginning to labor. There is no way these foes are going to be driven off quickly. He leans into the pegasus and says, "Protect her, my noble friend."

He directs the pegasus to dive lower, and once he reaches a safe height, Acerion swings his leg over and vaults from the back of the pegasus. Bringing his axe up quickly and swinging it around in a display of prowess he bellows, "Come then! Let us see who's favor is to be had this night!"

Ivy:
"Fear not, fair Ivy," Acerion will say reassuredly. "We go with honor and blessings of our gods to save these people, and in that we can not know defeat." He will take her hand gently in his and place it upon his armored breast. "As long as this beats, I will return to you." With a kiss upon her hand he turns and strides back quickly to where his pegasus awaits.
Ivy will feel better being close to Acerion and will give him a warm hug after he kisses her hand. A few tears can't help but fall from her eyes as the nobleman gets on his mount and prepares to depart.

"You'd better come back, Lord Acerion", Ivy will say. "I'll never forgive you if you don't."

"That may help on our approach and also not draw extra attention on our way. We used a similar tactic often with the Seekers. Can you cast your spell on an item, such as a stone or perhaps an arrow that Arocken can shoot into their midst? That would help to cut off the abilities of any shamans."
"Yes, that can be done." Ivy will cast the Silence spell on an arrow as directed.

"Where did they come from?", Ivy can't help but wonder upon seeing the foul creatures rush the open gate. "Close it! Close the gate!"

The words do not come in time as four of the creatures rush into the courtyard. Grabbing the Kiss of Azrella, Ivy prepares to do battle with them.

"YOU'LL NOT FIND ANY MORE VICTIMS HERE!!", she yells as she moves to engage the orcs.

Argent the Archer

Argent:
Lord Validar wrote:"Indeed. My ancestors have told stories of battles with Fire Giants as have the stories of Victor the First. I have read those and devoured the information within since I was taught to read."
"How interesting," Argent will comment. "Alas I have no grand family history to draw from for such information. Unless you find the life of a merchant to be interesting that is!"
Lord Validar wrote:"I see. That does make sense. A fine suggestion, Argent. I agree with your counsel. Do not tire yourself needlessly however, we have much need of your considerable talents in the morning. Indeed as soon as possible."
"I wish to do my part, Lord Validar. As I see it we need everyone who can to contribute. But I thank you for your concern for my well being. I am touched."
Lord Validar wrote:Validar considers her words for a moment, as he mounts his warhorse, Havok. "Safety seems far from the condition we are about to enter, my lady. However, be certain that I have no intention but for all of us to return alive. I have become quite difficult to kill," he will say simply.
"But there is no reason to put that theory to the test needlessly, is there?"
Laucian wrote:Walking towards her he will explain, "It is not hard; here let me show you." Taking the bow in hand he will show her the proper stance , as well as the fastest way to nock an arrow with minimum skill.

Argent pays attention to Laucian's lesson, but still finds the weapon almost alien to her.

"At the very least I won't be able to shoot myself thanks to my enchanted cloak," the Invoker will say with a wry smile.
Sherra wrote:If approached, Sherra will smile at Argent and happily pick up where Laucian left off in giving her a quick course in the usage of the bow. She doesn't say much else as it appears she is lost in other thoughts, but will be more than attentive once the riders depart.
Argent is happy to let Sherra continue the lesson. "You can never have too much information, I always say."

While Laucian covered the basics, Sherra's advice is a bit more helpful as it is the same exact weapon.

Once ready, Argent will take a position up on the left-hand stable tower. She'll try to fire the bow as well as she can once a target prevents itself. The riders are off and more humanoids rush the Gatehouse.

"Time to see how good of a study I am," Argent will mutter as she takes aim and fires.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Lord Corley

Post by Corley »

Corley:
"A fine testament my friend. Perhaps you will not need a bard at all, but manage to fill that role yourself," Validar says with a grin. The momentary light-heartedness does not overshadow the grimness of the battle they are currently fighting.

"Don't be so quick to dismiss the talents of a bard," Lyonessa will reply lightheartedly. "Although if you are looking to change your profession Lord Corley, I know several good teachers you could employ."

"I did not mean to infer that I was dismissing your talents, Lyonessa of Mystra. It is a bit of a joke between Lord Corley and myself, that might be better shared at a more light-hearted time. Still he does seem to have some natural talent, does he not?"
A tinge of red will come to Lord Corley's face over the words spoken by Lord Validar and Lady Lyonessa.

"That will not be necessary, Lady Lyonessa. I would rather stand down a horde of trolls than perform upon a stage! Let each of us do that which we do best."

After retrieving Destrier, Lord Corley is ready to begin the dangerous ride to rescue the humans from the evil Orcish priests. As he sits in his saddle he can't help but notice the departing words of Lady Argent to Lord Validar, and Lady Ivy to Lord Acerion. Magnificent pairings they make. Alas, no one is there to say such sweet things to Corley and that does trouble him some.

Finally, the gate is raised and we charge forth. The warhorses simply trample any opposition while those close enough feel the business end of our weapons. The silence is strange, but having been under it before makes it not as disconcerting.

It is strange to see the West Gatehouse deserted and wide open. But appearances can be deceiving as it is not as deserted as it first appeared. The bodies of the fallen defenders are strewn about the battlefield. There is no peace for them even in death as foul trolls feast on the remains! Other vermin, rats and carrion crawlers from the looks of them, feast on the fallen warriors. The site just further fuels Lord Corley's rage over what has transpired here.

Finally the park comes into view and the hordes of orcs and the humans they hold captive can be seen. A stroke of lightning from the magical wand briefly illuminates the night. Then Corley can see the magnificent pegasus diving down towards the center of the Orcish throng.

Spurring Destrier on, Corley shouts, "Faster my noble steed! There are innocents to rescue and vile villains to defeat!" Unfortunately the silence spell masks those words.

Corley will ride towards the center of the Orcish horde in an effort to support Lord Acerion. He'll trample those who get in the way and try to avoid any of the prisoners.

Our second attack of the night...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Validar rides out into the city and a small assemblage of foolish humanoids tries to bar their path, no doubt flush with overconfidence from their victories this day. The riders quickly put their thoughts of stopping the Guardians to rest as they trample, slash and route the foul enemy away.

Validar turns his warhorse to the West Gatehouse and leads the group soundlessly on at a full gallop, slashing down any who dare to try and slow them down. The gates loom ahead, gaping wide. The group rushes through avoiding the trolls and carrion feeding on the dead defenders of the Gatehouse. Validar notes to himself to deal with these things when they pass back through here.

Finally, we come upon the ghastly scene of the orc sacrifice. Lord Validar's lips curl in anger and he knows this night that he will attempt to kill every single last orc that remains here.

As they close in unseen, Validar feels the surrealness of this charge. Not being a stranger to these silent charges, often used by the Seekers in the Frontier, he relishes in it, knowing that they will make contact all the more easily and all the more powerfully. Validar can feel the rhythym of Havok's hoofbeats, but there is no sound. The blood in his ears seem to beat with the same rhythym. He pushes Havok on to full speed and the mighty steed sensing the coming conflict responds anxiously.

Then a bright flash lights up the sky and Validar watches the lightning bolt streak towards the orcs. He can see the lead orc and his henchmen hit, but not dropped and Validar leads his riders straight towards them.

He lowers his sword dramtically, while looking over his shoulder, indicating to Arocken to fire the 'Arrow of Silence' at those leaders. At about 50-100 yards out, Arocken slows to fire his bow. Suddenly sound comes flooding back to them as they leave the Silence Spell's effect area.

Validar immediately starts issuing orders. "Lord Corley, with me. Let us end the lives of their foul leaders in a swift stroke! Chareos, direct your Lightning against the masses!" Arocken is firing his bow already.

Lord Corley wings in on his pegasus with Lyonessa and Validar sees the noble drop from his steed and challenge the orcs. The man is brave indeed. Lord Validar directs Havok towards the orc leader and slashes his sword at him with all his might.

Sherra:
Validar considers her words for a moment, as he mounts his warhorse, Havok. "Safety seems far from the condition we are about to enter, my lady. However, be certain that I have no intention but for all of us to return alive. I have become quite difficult to kill," he will say simply.

"But there is no reason to put that theory to the test needlessly, is there?"
Sherra quietly watches Argent and Validar interact from a distance. She then turns and heads up for the tower staying within the darkness of night's shadows.
Argent is happy to let Sherra continue the lesson. "You can never have too much information, I always say."

While Laucian covered the basics, Sherra's advice is a bit more helpful as it is the same exact weapon.

Sherra will quickly explain the benefits of their position and how to best fire from such an elevated spot including how to gauge the speed of the enemy. There would be more she could tell Argent, but the enemy shows itself as the riders head out through the gate.

"Where did they come from?", Ivy can't help but wonder upon seeing the foul creatures rush the open gate. "Close it! Close the gate!"

The surviving four orcs clear the inner portcullis before it can be dropped. They rush Ivy and Grondar.

Those up on the walls have numerous targets to choose from as more orcs, goblins, and hobgoblins emerge from the buildings in the area and advance on the gatehouse.
Four orcs should be no problem for Grondar and Ivy to dispatch, so Sherra concentrates on the foes on the other side of the wall. She will plant arrows into the closest enemies and work her way back towards those further away.

Conversations...

Post by Validar »

Lord Validar -

Seems in writing the post, there were some conversations that I never commented upon. Sorry about that folks...

"How interesting," Argent will comment. "Alas I have no grand family history to draw from for such information. Unless you find the life of a merchant to be interesting that is!"

"Our family histories are to be proud of regardless of our station or heritage. Each of us makes our own mark on the world."

"I wish to do my part, Lord Validar. As I see it we need everyone who can to contribute. But I thank you for your concern for my well being. I am touched."

"I am concerned for the well being of all our comrades, Argent. And you have certainly contributed greatly to our cause this night. But any additional assistance will be welcomed. Our goal this night is to strike as hard and as many times as we can and to make our main assault on the enemy tomorrow."

"Indeed a needless risk is foolish and I do not consider myself to be foolish or reckless or even rash. Others have argued that fact in the past, but that is not my concern. I will do my best to keep us all alive and to save as many of our citizens as I can. Our peril may be grave, but we will all come through it intact," Lord Validar will say.

A tinge of red will come to Lord Corley's face over the words spoken by Lord Validar and Lady Lyonessa.

"That will not be necessary, Lady Lyonessa. I would rather stand down a horde of trolls than perform upon a stage! Let each of us do that which we do best."

Lord Validar will clap his friend on the shoulder, his metal gauntlet ringing against the shoulder plate of Lord Corley's armored form. "No need to be embarrassed, my friend. We all perform upon a stage already: the stage of life. But to be certain, I place even more faith in your sword arm than in your tongue."

Lord Validar's henchmen

Post by Validar »

Po -

Po assists the others with bringing the refugees across and once the new mother is bedded down, he will go out to the courtyard to assist in cleaning the area up.

Once the call to arms is made, Po will help with the arrow dispersal and then take up a space on the wall between the Stable Tower and the center Tower behind the wall crenellations. He sets his short bow ready and checks his quiver for arrow placements.

When the riders head out and the humanoids start to move in on the Gatehouse, Po will start to fire at whichever targets are closest, firing at one until it drops before moving on.

Arocken -

Arocken takes the Arrow of Silence with a grin. "Just like old times, eh Validar. Although right about now, we could use the help of Stephanie, Finrod, Blod and the others."

Arocken rides behind the two fighters on their charge, deftly firing arrows from horseback and dropping humanoids as they go. As they close in on the park, he sees Validar give the signal. At about 50 yards from the orc horde, Arocken will pull up on his horse and fire the Silenced Arrow at one of the leaders. He will then continue to fire arrows at the horde, attempting to move forward if the others are getting overwhelmed. He will then switch to sword and attack hand to hand. If the orcs do not overwhelm, then stay with arrows for now on the horde.

Lyonessa:

Overhead, Acerion and Lyonessa fly ahead on the Pegasus who does not mind her presence. Dusk flies ahead of them and thanks to her familiar's enhanced senses is aware of what is happening around them.

Lyonessa is grateful that the paladin's pegasus accepted her easily enough. The plan would have had complications if she wasn't able to join him. The sensation of looking through her familiar's eyes as well as flying on a pegasus is a combination of new experiences for her that she wishes would have been under happier times.

The lead orcs seem perfect targets, but the wand fails to deliver fatal blows to any of them. A few orcs are slain on the bolt's rebound, but that isn't what she hoped for. Things get interesting right after.

"What?" Lyonessa asks, not quite sure what Lord Acerion had said. He seemed to be leaning forward, almost talking to his pegasus. Then the paladin swings his legs over and leaps to the ground into the mass of waiting orcs. "No!" she cries out, but he's already gone. She doubts he needed to be so rash to prove his bravery, but it's done.

As quickly as possible, she moves up to sit properly on the pegasus, hoping the mount doesn't throw her. Depending on what the pegasus does, she will try for a shot with the wand to clear a path to one side of Acerion so that he isn't overwhelmed on all sides.

Battle for Corunglain

Post by Grondar »

Grondar:
Validar wrote:"I will refrain myself, but for Arocken, Chareos and Corley, it may prove quite beneficial. I would suggest Chareos, since he is the lightest armored of those likely to be in direct combat."
"Chareos is a good choice; I'll take care of it right away." Grondar locates the young warrior-mage and offers him the divine protection of his patron goddess.

The grounds and walls of the Vesubian Gatehouse become a hotbed of activity as the warriors prepare to ride forth. Preparations are made and defenses organized. Some of the refugees are able to pitch in and help in a variety of ways, from running messages to manning the walls.

Unexpectedly, humanoids begin to accumulate outside the walls, and some rush forward when the gates are opened to let Validar's band out. Many are trampled or cut down by the mounted warriors. Two orcs are crushed by the descending portcullis, but four more make it inside. They immediately rush Grondar and Ivy, who have just completed casting their spells.

Readying his shield and mace, Grondar races forward to meet the orcs. He attempts to smash one with TruthGiver, then plowing bodily into another.

Chareos

Handing over his wand to Lyonessa he will greet her smile and wish her luck as well. "Just say the command word when you are ready. The wand will do the rest. Take care of yourself, I would miss you and your ballads so."

As the Riders make ready to depart Grondar Offers a spell of his patron for protection. As the dwarven priest approaches Chareos will accept his protection. "Thank you Grondar. Any aid you would be able to spare would be appreciated."

Afterward Chareos will wish the dwarf luck.

As the riders ride out Chareos' horse stutters and is slow to move. Kicking hard into the sides of his mount he urges his mount forward. The view ahead is that of those orcs foolish enough to not get out of the way of the charging calvary. Several are brought down as Chareos steers clear of the bodies.

The ride continues in eerie silence as they ride through a gatehouse where several trolls are dining on the brave men that passed. Torn between rage and anger he spurs his mount forward. As the park comes into view Lord Validar raises his sword to signal the attack. As the sound rushes back into the mage's ears he hears the commands issued forth but only in a mere blur. The word of his lightning bolt spell soon trail across his lips.

He will send a Lightning bolt spell into the masses of the orcs, aiming clear of his fellow Guardians as well as prisoners. After doing so he will move to Arocken's flank and await the orcs with his quaterstaff in hand.

Laucian

Laucian walks the walls helping distribute the arrows amongst those on duty. As he does so he can't help but see his comrades getting ready to intercept the orc horde. He can't help but wishes he was with them though he knows his skills with a bow are far better suited for the gatehouse walls. He will say a silent pray for his fellow Guardians and may they return safe to these walls.

He watches his brave comrades. As they ride forth several orcs run for the gates. Taking aim he tries to get a clear shot but lets out an elfish curse as they are quickly out of range. Turning to the inside of the courtyard he sees that only 4 orcs have breeched the gate. Leaving the orcs to his fellow clerics he will turn to the wall.

As he does so several humaniods are seen approaching the wall. Nocking an arrow to his bow he will aim steadily at the front rank of the humaniods and begin firing. If any Humaniod approaches with grapping hook/ladder they will be his prime target.
