Elfquest #25
Elfquest #25
The elves have fought their first battle against Moorkroft and prevailed. But it was only some kind of magical construct and not the real mage, although he sounded and acted like the real thing. Illusions and misdirection’s seem to be Moorkroft’s preferred form of battle.
Valena heals some of the damage done to Talen from the Cone of Cold he was struck by. Laucian escorts the lad back to the exit from this area. The tree portal opens and Talen passes through. Laucian then returns to the others.
The cooshee’s and lionesses take in Moorkroft’s smell from his illusions remains. While the body wasn’t real, the clothes it wore were. All the animals are eager to move on through the next portal.
In response to the pendants, the next tree portal opens before you. Sherwood passes through, quickly followed by the animals and the elves.
The next area of the Elfin Palace is large and completely wide open. It’s a circular area some 150’ wide and there are no buildings here. Instead, it is a lovely garden completely with many flowering plants and trees. Small footpaths wind their way through the garden. Occasionally there are fountains of water flowing from elfin carved figures. The sculptures are very beautiful.
A circular path rings the outer edge of the garden and you can see multiple portals leading away from this area. There are elegantly carved benches here and there in the garden. Typically, they are close to other free standing statues, giving you that this is a combination of a garden and art gallery.
At the center of the garden is a huge willow tree. Its trunk is easily ten feet thick! Other than the plant life, no living creatures can be seen in the garden.

Stepping through, Nariya is in awe of the beauty of the place. However they must all be wary, so she begins focusing on one of the other portals as she moves away from Sherwood and the others in order to not risk being all hit by a magical spell or item.
Nariya will keep her bow trained on one of the portals until something happens or Sherwood directs them elsewhere.

Sherwood:
Passing through the portal, Sherwood finds himself in a lovely elfin garden. Certainly not what he was expecting! But then again, Moorkroft is just an invader here. The palace wasn’t built to suit his tastes specifically. Thus far what we’ve encountered makes sense. There was an arrival area. Next came an area for guests to stay and now a garden filled with art. It would make a fine place to light conversation and low-key meetings.
Now we just have to figure out just how Moorkroft would turn this into something evil…
“Let’s keep to the outer edges,” Sherwood suggests. “Just incase our mad mage added new plants to this garden. We’ll let the cooshee’s decide what portal we should take next. Hopefully it’ll put us closer to Lilia.”

Passing through the portal, Valena is pleased to see the lovely garden. She can imagine spending many an hour here in quiet contemplation.
After a moment’s thought, she’ll add, “Which way to Moorkroft?
“Perhaps,” Valena answers. She’ll then ask the cooshee’s to get the scent from the clothing so that they can track the vile mage down.”Lia wrote:Turning to Valena, “Would these robes carry the same scent as Moorkroft?” she wonders out loud.

Floating high above the floor, Kylie notes Sherwood's point and swiftly moves to the edge of the room to follow the wall around to whichever exit the cooshees indicate.Sherwood wrote:“Let’s keep to the outer edges,” Sherwood suggests. “Just incase our mad mage added new plants to this garden. The elves have arrived in the next portion of the Elfin Palace. It’s a magnificent looking garden, completely with flowers, plants, flowing fountains and statuary. However, given the sheer number of illusions you’ve faced thus far, Sherwood decides to stick to the edges of the platform just for safeties sake.
Valena pauses to speak to the cooshee’s. She asks them which way will lead them to Lilia and Moorkroft. All the cooshee’s are in agreement and they begin to run towards a tree portal on the other side of the area.
Lia remarks just how unusual it is that the garden is still in good condition without anyone to tend it. This makes Kylie suspicious and she focuses on using her finder training to see if there are any illusions about.
In Kylie’s eyes, she sees that much of the main garden is covered with a light, translucent fog. It is an illusion!
What lies underneath the illusion is a nightmarish garden. Many plants, and plant-like tentacles thrash about waiting for someone to venture too close. Mixed in with the plants are more suits of ancient elfin platemail, much like the suits that were fought in the arrival area. The willow tree in the middle takes on a nightmarish appearance and turns black.
Fortunately, the area around the outer edge of the garden is free of illusions. The group is able to reach the far tree portal unmolested.

It takes but a few moments for Kylie's mystic sight to penetrate the fog of illusion. The grotesque parody that lies beneath shocks her senses for a moment.

The next area is also circular, but this one is populated with buildings. These buildings seem more secure then the guest quarters that were encountered back in the area with the green dragon illusion. More suits of animated armor are present and they seem to be patrolling the hallways in the middle of this area. The cooshees seem to want to move deeper into this area. Lady tells Valena that Lilia is near!

“Valena, stay here with the cooshee’s. Keep them from rushing in, at least for right now. Kylie, you mentioned that you had Wraithform in memory before. Cast it now. Coupled with your flight spell, you’ll be able to explore the inside of these buildings quickly.”

Sherwood still has a flight spell in affect from the earlier attempt to enter the Elfin Palace from above. He’ll use it to fly up towards the top of this area to get a good overhead view.
“Perhaps,” Sherwood states. “I think it’s more likely that she was brought her by force. It would have taken more than simple curiosity to circumvent what we’ve encountered thus far. Passing through the next portal, they enter a large area with a variety of guarded buildings. The guards appear to be animated suits of armor, like those encountered previously.

According to the cooshee’s, the area the elves just entered is where the missing Lilia is located! The elfin dogs are eager to rush to find her, but Valena manages to hold them back. Sherwood wants to scout the area first, before forming a plan of action. He asks Kylie to cast Wraithform and go forth to explore the buildings here. Everyone else splits up to look around.
Sherwood flies up to get an overhead view of the area. The entire area is circular and there seems to be a total of four tree portals here. Curved walkways slice cut between the outer edge of the area and the center. Small buildings of various shapes and sizes occupy most of the in-between area. Only a few are more than one story high. The center of the area is open and a small fountain is there.
Wandering the walkways between the buildings is a small army of those animated suits of elfin plate mail you’ve encountered before. However, standing before two of the buildings are creatures that can only be stone golems! These constructs are over nine feet tall and are carved to resemble the animated suits of elfin plate mail, but are stone instead of metal. The buildings they guard are in the center of the area and opposite of each other. Thus the stone golems are facing each other across the fountain.
As long as no one actually enters the walkways between the buildings, the armored suits do not attack. They ignore anyone above ground, either in the air or on top of the building.
Kylie casts Wraithform and her body becomes insubstantial. She flies ahead and is able to seep into the cracks and any opening that exists in the buildings. Each building has open windows and cracks and seems, so no place is barred to her.
The buildings seem to be vacant as Kylie flies along. Noise draws her attention to one building near the center of the area. A soft moan is heard emanating from one of the buildings in the middle. It is one of the ones guarded by a stone golem.
Floating past the golem and into the building, Kylie notes that there is a sliding bar locking the door on the outside. The windows in the building are too small for any normal elf to pass through. The first room of the building is small and its main feature is a large table. Scattered about this table is what appears to be Lilia’s gear! Her backpack is spotted, along with her Manabow and the Star Crown.
The moaning is coming from the next room. The door to the room is also stout and barred from the outside. Flowing through the small window, Kylie sees Lilia herself! Her wrists are manacled and forcibly held over her head by a chain. What appears to be a sack was put over her head and then a cloth gag was put into her mouth, both silencing her and keeping the sack secured over her head. Any mage in such a position would be rendered helpless.
Lilia twists and moans, trying to free herself but is unable. The manacles look easy enough to pick to Kylie, but the doors would be tricky to try and open from the inside. They are easily opened from the outside.
Back outside, everyone has returned to the rendezvous point with the exception of Kylie.

GM Notes:
You’ve found Lilia!
Now what?
The mage generally can tell when Fly is beginning to fade. They can feel the magic fading and flight becoming harder to maintain. They usually have a minute or two to land before the spell gives out completely. Oh, and you cannot pass through solid objects in Wraithform. Just through the smallest of openings.Would Kylie have any sense of how much time she has left on her Fly spell? I have no idea how much game time has passed since she cast that spell.
You’ve found Lilia!
Now what?
Try it and find out!

Kylie:
Insubstantial due to her Wraithform spell, Kylie seeps through the buildings looking for their missing friend. Fortunately, the enchanted armor don't appear to notice her, or at least ignore her if they do.
Most of the buildings appear to be empty, but Kylie hears a moan from the one guarded by the golem. Slipping inside, she notes a table with what are obviously Lilia's possessions scattered thereupon. Kylie begins to get excited as she realizes that Lilia must be in the next room.
Sure enough, Lilia is manacled and gagged within, her head covered by a sack. Kylie's heart sinks to see her friend's pitiful state. Moving close, Kylie whispers in Lilia's ear. "It's me, Lilia - Kylie. I'm so glad we found you. I'm in Wraithform right now, but I'm going to fetch the others to free you. Don't worry, you won't be here long."
Kylie will pause for a few moments to see if there is any response from Lilia, then fly off to inform Sherwood and the others of what she's found.

While the others go explore, Valena stays with the cooshee’s, talking to them and reassuring them that they will be able to act soon. Hopefully, we’ll be moving out soon as they are becoming more and more difficult to control.

Sherwood:
Hovering overhead, Sherwood has the beginnings of a plan. The animated suits were not much of a challenge before, so they may not be again. These ones here might be special in some manner, but there’s no way to know that just yet. Perhaps those suits can be lured into an area and contained with a Web spell. That would leave only those stone golems as a real threat.
“Those stone golems are tough foes, but they can be beaten. There is no underlying intelligence to them, so they can be lured off and otherwise outwitted. They require enchanted weapons to harm, and those above a base enchantment. The simplest way to deal with them in this situation is to have two of us lure them away, while the rest of us see what they are guarding.”
Kylie returns shortly after this with her report. “Two questions,” Sherwood says. “What’s the second golem guarding and why didn’t you just free Lilia right there?”

Kylie:
If Sherwood feels that the other golem-guarded building is immediately pertinent to our interests, Kylie will fly off to investigate it.
Returning, Kylie is somewhat taken aback by the reception she receives. "Thinking that you would want to know that I had located Lilia, I didn't investigate the other buildings. I can certainly rectify that now if you would like. As for Lilia, I wasn't sure we could fight our way out past the golem. I returned so that would could make a coordinated plan for dealing with the golem and rescuming Lilia."Sherwood wrote:Kylie returns shortly after this with her report. “Two questions,” Sherwood says. “What’s the second golem guarding and why didn’t you just free Lilia right there?”

Sherwood:
“Maybe between the two of you the golem could have been bypassed. We’ll never know, so no reason to dwell on it. I personally would have freed her right away, but that’s me. Stay here, as I’m sure your spell won’t last much longer. No sense in getting you trapped as well.”
“At any rate, we need to plan this out. Those armored suits were not much of a challenge before, but their numbers are greater this time. The only bad thing about using constructs like the armored suits and golems is that they use simple tactics and can easily be outwitted. In this case that works to our advantage. Both constructs can be lured away, for instance.”
“The simplest way to deal with the armored suits is to lure them down one of the paths and then cast a Web spell between the buildings. Those that do manage to avoid this can easily be taken down by the cooshee’s, assuming that these models don’t have any other surprises.”
“The golems are a different story. They are tough and strong; a Web spell won’t hold them back. They can be hacked apart, or even felled with ranged weapons, but these weapons must be magical in nature. I’m not sure if the ranged attacks that everyone here has will harm them or not. They are vulnerable to most magical spells. Magic Missiles will work just fine against them.”
“To sum up, my tactics are to lure as many of the armored suits into one walkway and then web them. Then some of us will need to get close enough to the golems to lure them off while others go to rescue Lilia and see what the second golem was guarding.”
“Anyone have any other ideas?”
Sensing Kylie’s annoyance, Sherwood says, “I’m glad that you found Lilia. I was merely curious as what the other golem was guarding. It might be important in what is to come. I like to know as many facts as I can about an impending battle.”Kylie wrote:Returning, Kylie is somewhat taken aback by the reception she receives. Valena:
Valena is pleased that Lilia has been found.
“That’s wonderful news, Kylie,” she says.
But it seems that two stone golems are in the area as well. Valena listens to Sherwood’s ideas and mostly agrees with them.
“It’s easy enough to find out if our bows are magical enough to harm those golems. We can shoot at them from the rooftops. If they are powerful enough, we should be able to bring those things down without a scratch. Then we can deal with everything else here. I just hope that Moorkroft doesn’t show up again.”

“That is if the golems don’t bring the walls down beneath us while we are attempting that.” Looking at Sherwood, “In your travels, where would be best for leading the armor away and trapping it?”

Lia will offer, “So who will be the bait?” she asks looking around. “Surely one who can walk through the web would have to be able to do so. I can do it, and try to fight my way free unless someone has a better idea.”
"I'm sure I can lure them too," Nariya says, "but I can't walk through webs, so you might be the best for the task."

Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

Sherwood:
After hearing what the others say, Sherwood’s plans crystallize.
“Okay, here’s what we’re going to do. Since Lia can bypass the Web with ease, she’ll be on the ground. Walk down the path a little bit so that they see you, Lia. Laucian and Nariya can give you bow cover from the ground. Kylie and I will be overhead, while Valena keeps the cooshee’s under control. Nariya and Laucian can fire a few arrows to attract the attention of the suits of armor. Once they spot Lia, they should come running. Just make sure you keep ahead of them Lia. Once they are almost past the buildings, Kylie will cast Web sealing them in. That completes step one.”
“Once that is done, Laucian and Nariya will move to the southern path. Your task will be to lure the stone golems away from their post. Just get close enough to fire arrows. You might have a few armored suits to contend with along the way.”
“Once the golems have moved from their post, and the entry to the two secured buildings is clear, I’ll cast a Wall of Force that will keep the golems out. Once that is done, Laucian and Nariya can then stop firing their arrows and retreat back. Circle back around to join us.”
“Valena will unleash the cooshee’s from the north path. They’ll take out any remaining armored suits in the area. Kylie can go free Lilia, while Lia checks out the other locked building. The rest of us will provide support while that is going in. Once Lilia has been freed and other building explored, we withdraw and race back to the barge and get out of here.”

Lia
Lia will stand with her sword in hand at the allotted space. With a deep and sword in hand she will wait the onslaught of the armor rushing towards her. She will run as fast as she can towards the allotted area then turn bring her sword up and holding it loosely in her hand. Once the Web is in place she will rush forward towards the web slashing as needed and go through the web. Once she is clear she will attempt to get close to the second building.

Kylie:
Kylie listens to Sherwood as he starts to formulate a plan. Laucian's remark draws a sharp look, but she bites back her retort. From what she had seen of Lilia's condition, she wasn't sure she was in any shape for a fight right now.
Sherwood finallizes his plan. Seems like it should be effective. They'll have to deal with incidentals as they go.
"It occurs to me that the outer edges of the deck just kind of stop. If need be, we might be able to lead any troublesome armor suits or golems into falling off the edge."
When everyone is ready, Kylie will fly up into position to cast her Web.
