New Frontiers #102

The Guardians have entered the watery lair of the aboleth that has been controlling Ansimont for many years. During this time it has been capturing mages for some unknown, but no doubt dire, purpose. The heroes attacked as soon as they saw the creature, only to discover that it was an illusion! The real aboleth rises from the water and moves closer to shore.

On the shore, Phelan reaches Myveria and finds her to be unharmed, other than currently being held by Lyonessa’s magic. The songstress joins them.

Upon seeing the real aboleth, Sherra fires a pair of shafts at the monstrosity. Both missiles embed themselves in the creature's fleshy flank. Regnak adds a lone Magic Missile that also does damage. A crossbow bolt from Sir Corley over-shoots the target.

Seeing that it is real and taking damage, Chareos casts a second Fireball. Once more it explodes around the aboleth, but this time does real damage! The great fish is badly singed and it stops its approach. It’s clear that it’s now turning in an attempt to get away!

Seeing this, Baron Validar and Ivy give chase into the water. The Baron is faster thanks to his Boots of Speed and reaches the foul fish. A single sword thrust is all that is required to slay the beast. The aboleth stops swimming and a foul ooze flows from its body into the water.

With the aboleth slain, those under its thrall are freed. Myveria will be herself once the Hold spell wears off.

Apart from the underwater exit and the lift platform, there is no other way to exit this cavern. Nothing else of interest is found here. The Guardians can depart and return to the Inn without incident. A few hours later the dawn comes and finds Ansimont now a free town.

GM Notes

Post by GM Mad »

GM Notes:

That wraps up the troubles here in Ansimont. The aboleth is gone and those it controlled have been freed.

XP’s have been updated in the private area, although only Ivy and Sherra have gained levels thus far.
(Sorry for any confusion, but the assumption here is that lots of things are said 'off-camera' and as Regnak's spells were posted in a public area, he at least made some mention of them at some point.)

(Perhaps he mumbles in his sleep?)

(In the future, for everyone's benefits, please make note about anything which is public, but not common knowledge. It's hard to keep track of things, especially when assumptions can be made.)
My personal take is that unless it’s said in the main body of the post, then it is not common knowledge. It’s the only fair way to handle it as not everyone posts their spell lists in the public thread and sometimes I get asked questions outside the game in email.

However, there are somethings that are assumed to take place out of the main posts that do have some bearing on things. These include any group polices that the party leader chooses to have in place. Such policies include the Open Spellbooks policy that requires mages to share their spells. Another is that it is assumed that spellcasters inform the party leader of what spells they have in memory before any battle. This is done to speed things up instead of bogging the post down. Any new member of the group is made aware of these polices, so Reg would have been asked what spells he had ready, if any, before entering into battle. Validar plans on posting what party policies he has, to further clarify things.

Time to wrap up our stay in Ansimont!

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Group Rules

Post by Validar »

In an effort to be as clear as possible (as there was much murkiness which had to be sifted through recently), here are some of the group rules that Validar has put in place. Some would be continuations of the rules established in the original group.

Please note, this post is being duplicated in a Q&A thread. Please use that for comments and posts and leave this thread for normal posting.

Spell Sharing
The Guardians rule is that there are open spell books among the spell-casters. The assumption is that if you can cast a level of spell, then you are free to look at that level of book.

Treasure
The way monetary treasure is dealt with is that the group will get the bulk of it, but if there are pressing matters to deal with financially, then they may be funded first.

Individuals make it clear to the PL what magic items or very valuable regular items they would like and the PL makes the decision who gets what. The decision is based upon helping the group first and foremost while being fair to everyone. In some cases a character may be given a particular choice of any item, but that is not guaranteed.

Communication
If someone is away from the group and later returns, the entire set of circumstances does not have to be rewritten in narative form. Indicating that someone told someone else something gives them all information posted. Otherwise, write what you want people to know.

Planning sessions
In order to avoid the extreme level of post bog-down that would result in every conversation before a combat or mission, several things will be assumed. If someone has a comment to make or a suggestion, please offer it, but PL may make the basic decisions and let people work out how they are going to do things.

PL expects to know at least offensive spells available to the group. This is a very tactical matter and may be necessary for everyone to get through the battle alive. Everyone should know what 'artillery' is at their disposal. That said, any offensive spells are to be communicated to the PL. This is assumed through the posting of spells to the spell thread. Otherwise, PL will ask specific questions.

Please questions and comment (in the dedicated thread) and realize that this applies ONLY to the New Frontiers game.

Lyonessa:

On the shore, Phelan reaches Myveria and finds her to be unharmed, other than currently being held by Lyonessa’s magic. The songstress joins them.

"She'll be fine," Lyonessa says again once she reaches Phelan's side. "I just didn't want her hurting us or herself."

This time the aboleth is real. Arrows magic and Validar's sword defeat the monster. It's over! Lyonessa can't wait to be reunited with her sister after all this time. Oh the things she has to tell her! She will wait until Phelan and her are reunited first though, even if it is hard to do.

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:

Sir Corley winces as his crossbow bolt sails harmlessly past the intended target. The young knight has spent so much time practicing with his great sword that his skill with other weapons has suffered.

Lady Sherra’s arrows tell us that this monstrosity is real. The big fish takes damage from ranged weapons and from magical attacks. Just as it seems it is getting closer, it begins to turn. Clearly, the beast is not as tough as was expected. Dropping his crossbow, Sir Corley readies his sword and dashes towards the enemy. Baron Validar is faster thanks to his enchanted footwear and reaches the target first. A single sword stroke settles the issue.

Just like that, the threat is over. The immediate area is searched and there does not seem to be any other ways out of this cavern. While we wait for Lady Lyonessa’s spell to wear off of her sister, Sir Corley chats with Baron Validar.

“It seems that the reason why that beast needed mages will remain a mystery for now. There seems to be no way to follow the creature to where ever it was taking them. At least no normal way for us mere mortals to follow. In a way, this is fine with me. We have more than our fair share of troubles to confront now without adding more. Another tantalizing mystery to address another day.”

After departing the underground cavern, Sir Corley will return to the Inn with the others and turn in for the evening. New troubles are sure to present themselves in the morn.

Ivy

Post by Ivy »

Ivy:

The battle against this ‘aboleth’ turns out to be decidedly one-sided. Clearly, it is not a creature of brute force, but one of subtlety that uses illusions and its ability to control others to achieve its goals. With the aboleth defeated, Ivy slides her mace back into her belt and goes to Lyonessa’s side.

“With the death of that creature, your sister should be free of its control. I don’t see any physical injuries to Myveria. She’s going to be all right.”

Ivy is eager to be gone from this smelly cave. The purpose for all of this will remain a secret for now. Ivy does not have access to any spells that would allow her to function underwater. Even if she did, she’d be wary of making such an attempt. Just how long is the underwater passage? Would the spell last long enough to reach the end? Given just how many spells have uncertain durations, it's just too much of a risk right now.

Once back at the inn, Ivy will visit Sir Acerion to let him know that everything worked out just fine. She’ll describe the battle with the aboleth. After visiting for a time, Ivy will turn in for the evening. Morning is not too far away and she’s sure that they’ll be moving on tomorrow.

Winding things up in Ansimont...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris -

The aboleth has managed to trick them with its illusions, and the Guardians see another of the creature. They attack in a probing manner initially, trying to determine if this creature is real or not.

Seeing Sherra's arrows connect, the Baron is confident that is is the real enemy. The group hits it more as it approaches and the ugly three-eyesd creature starts to turn away.

Validar splashes into the water spurred on by his magickal Boots of Speed. One wild swing slices into the foul smelling beast and that is enough. It partially submerges for a moment, then floats to the surface on its side. Validar stabs the thing one more time to make sure it is not attempting some trick, but the water is pooling with the creature's blood and other vile liquids. Apparently, the stories told by Lars were either a bit of an exaggeration or this group truly is just that skilled. Validar cannot help but be pleased once he gets past the initial surprise at the fleetness of the combat.

Validar cleans his magickal blade and salutes the group quickly before sheathing the Warblade. "Well done all," he will offer.

Lyonessa and Ivy, along with Phelan are seeing to Lyonessa's sister.

"Indeed you are correct," validar responds. "While it is possible that we could do some good by directing our efforts towards this task, the efforts would likely prove monumental just to undertake and we have more pressing matters. The mages could be anywhere in the world now, based on what we have seen with our recent enemies." Validar pauses for a moment. "Our duty is to the Duke and to the people of the new duchy. Still I have a feeling that it is intertwined with our current enemies. We will likely see the results of their twisted gains at some point in the future. At least we were able to halt their efforts here."

As soon as possible, the group will exit the cave. Validar will introduce himself to Myveria as soon as she has her wits about herself. Up in the warehouse, Validar will give a quick update to Charles Ansimont and have him meet them in the morning to update the situation further.

Returning to the inn, Validar will inform the Duke that all is well, the danger here is passed and that they can resume their mission. A quick briefing with Charles is due in the morning and the procession will be ready to depart in late morning for Jallarzi's Estate.

"No tricks this time," Sherra says upon seeing her arrows strike and do visible damage. The aboleth is quickly defeated with Validar ensuring it will not rise again. Sherra wonders how difficult it might have been if Lyonessa had not subdued her sister.

While the others wait around, Sherra will investigate the cave as completely as she can. Water isn't a big deal for her either, but she will be cautious. No sense in getting into trouble when this was such a success. She's not expecting to find anything, but it helps pass the time.

Sir Acerion:

Once back at the inn, Ivy will visit Sir Acerion to let him know that everything worked out just fine. She’ll describe the battle with the aboleth. After visiting for a time, Ivy will turn in for the evening. Morning is not too far away and she’s sure that they’ll be moving on tomorrow.

After a warm embrace, Acerion listens to Ivy's tale. "An easy battle then. Probably a welcome relief after the tension that had built up around this mystery. It is good that Lyonessa is reunited with her sister as well. It just makes me wonder what happened to the others who were taken and why Myveria was present there tonight."

"It has been quiet here," Acerion then tells Ivy. "Still, it was neccessary to remain alert just in case."

Later when an opportunity presents itself, Acerion will check Myveria for evil. There is no sense in letting down our guard because the monster was defeated.

Post Continued:

Down in the aboleth cave, the magic holding Myveria wears off and she can move again. It’s clear to both Lyonessa and Phelan that Myveria is herself. She gives Phelan a quick embrace and then turns her attention to Lyonessa.

“Sister! It is so good to see you again!” A long, warm hug follows. “How are mother and father? What have you been up to?”

Introductions are made with Myveria and the group departs the aboleth cave. In the warehouse overhead, Baron Validar updates Charles Ansimont on what has transpired. Charles agrees to meet the Duke at the Inn first thing in the morning.

Next morning, the Duke meets with Charles Ansimont once more, or more correctly Baron Ansimont. The meeting is productive with the baron agreeing to form a proper military presence in the area. Charles seems to be a worthy ally to the new duke.

The procession will depart late in the morning. If all goes well, you should reach the Salavarian Estate around dusk.

Regnak

Reg watches as arrow, magic and steel bring the beast down to nothing more than a corpse. Stowing his morning star and shortsword, Regnak will walk the waterline for signs of passing, merely to see if any outside the group were there recently. He will then congratulate Lyonessa on her reunion; sadly there will be no reunion with his kin which brings a sombering note to him.

Relighting his pipe he will relax on the lift on the way back up. He will pray to Mysteria before night's end upon; awakening he will realize that Mysteria’s blessing have increased!

Chareos

Watching the giant tentacled fish’s blood flow freely and sink away into the lake, Chareos can’t help but wonder if this Aboleth had any more mages within its grasp lurking somewhere beneath the water.

Landing on the ground Chareos feels the earth once again underneath his feet as a sudden epiphany strikes him clear as day! A new magic that he previously misunderstood forms clear in his head. A smile etches across his face as one word etches itself in his mind: Chaos! “I must fetch a quill and parchment,” he says as the others talk amongst themselves in the cavern and Lyonessa and her sister are rejoined. He will leave the sisters to themselves but he can’t help but smile at seeing the two whole again, so to speak.

Topside Chareos will poor over his spell book eagerly and begin writing down his new spell. Chareos will then study new spells for the coming day(to be updated later today) and turn in.

Back at the Inn, Sir Corley will remove and clean his armor before sleeping. The rush of combat has removed any weariness that he feels for now. In the morning, he will rise, eat a hearty breakfast and then don his armor once more for the push to Elcadan. While eating, several thoughts do occur to him. He seeks out Baron Validar.

“Morning, my friend. I’ve had several thoughts since our last conversation, several of which I am sure you have considered already. It occurs to me that the last leg of our journey will be the last chance the enemy has to attack us in force away from a city. We should expect to be challenged while on the road this day.”

“Secondly, we should maintain the illusion that the Duchess and Lady Gabriella are among us. I would suggest that Lady Ivy, Lady Lyonessa and her sister Myveria ride in the coach for this last leg of the journey. No slight against Lady Sherra, but such things do not seem to appeal to her.”

“An easy battle for a change,” Ivy agrees. “Yes, I am very happy for Lyonessa. I am glad that she found her sister. As for why only Myveria was present, perhaps the beast makes its underwater journey with several mages. It was just waiting for more to come into its slimy embrace before departing. Only the gods know for sure.”

Sleep comes easily this night. Upon waking, Ivy goes through her morning prayers and discovers that her clerical skills have increased a bit. She is able to pray for two additional spells.

Once finished, Ivy dresses and grabs her gear. Breakfast is had and she waits to see what the plan for today is.

Prepping for the journey...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris -

With the mission accomplished, Validar updates the Duke and those back at the Inn on their results. He sends word to the troops to be ready to move out in the morning. Knowing that morning will be here soon, Validar quickly drifts off to sleep.

In the morning, he will check with the troop commanders. They are not leaving until late morning, but there are several things to accomplish. He will have the light cavalry on high alert from about one hour before they are to depart for the rest of the day's travels.

Charles Ansimont meets with the Duke and Validar is there. Charles has his title of Baron officially bestowed, or restowed as the case may be. Validar gives some suggestions on troop enlistment and organization to Charles as well as some thoughts for defensive structures and overall defense of the barony. There is much work to do here. Validar is pleased that they were able to help this town with minimal loss of life, unlike what happened at Wrasseldown.

Validar will have Charles make judgement on the men who worked with him in trying to capture the Duke. The baron's feeling is that there should be some punishment, for even though they were following orders, the tasks they were doing were clearly not of a good nature.

Validar has an early breakfast due to his meetings this day. Eventually, Sir Corley catches up with him.

"I believe you to be correct. I would be disappointed if they expected us to have been dealt with and not check up on their handiwork somehow. I have already informed the cavalry commanders to be on alert for attacks. I do not know what sort of attack to expect, but knowing our enemies it can be anything from the mundane to the bizarre; from enemy troops to demons and anything in between. We will inform everyone to be on their guard when we leave."

'Perhaps you are correct. Certainly, it shall not hurt us to do so. I will inform the ladies of this request."

Validar will meet with the Guardians before they leave and tell them to be careful in case some attack comes this day. It may come before we leave, but once we get close to Lady Sallavarian's Estate we should be safe.

Lyonessa:

Sister! It is so good to see you again!” A long, warm hug follows. “How are mother and father? What have you been up to?”

Hugging her back Lyonessa says, "Oh, there's so much for us to catch up on! I haven't seen Mother or Father in a while since I've been out trying to find you. We hadn't heard from you in so long we were beginning to fear the worst."

On the ride back Lyonessa will tell of her adventures with her old band where she was the last survivor and how she joined up with everyone she introduced her to. The conversation will continue into the evening and will undoubtably turn to the topic of men.

"Yes there is someone I think about, but he had to leave for a very important quest. His name is Laucian," Lyonessa tells her sister after trying to deflect the question for some time.

"So you're waiting for someone who you might never see again?" Myveria inquires, "sounds like one of your ballads."

Lyonessa smiles, but it's half-hearted, "I know, but there's just something about him. I can't get him out of my mind."

"So there's no one else?" her sister prods.

"Well, there is this very nice squire, Moonshadow," Lyonessa reveals.

"Oh, and?"

"And nothing," Lyonessa says, smiling despite herself. "Like I said, my thoughts are on Laucian."

"Nothing wrong with a squire," Myveria replies. "and I hear you're a lady now yourself."

"Well, yes but I don't want to lead him on if..."

"If this elf of yours returns," Myveria finishes. "You do what you must," she says with an overexaggerated sigh.

The two sisters laugh and talk some more into the night. Eventually though, Myveria departs to be with Phelan, leaving Lyonessa alone with her thoughts. She falls asleep thinking of two different men and two different possibilities.

'Perhaps you are correct. Certainly, it shall not hurt us to do so. I will inform the ladies of this request."

When Validar approaches her on this, Lyonessa will say, "If you think it will help then I will do this. I could then focus more on Dusk when is flying about looking for ambushes or signs of trouble."

The Guardians wrap up their stay in Ansimont. While the danger was not as obvious as it was in Wrasseldown, the town was in peril as some of the townsfolk were enthralled by an aboleth. The monster was slain, it’s hold now broken. Ansimont will begin to go back to normal.

It is near noon before the Guardians are ready to depart. Lyonessa, Ivy, and Myveria ride in the carriage this day, to carry on the illusion that the Duchess and Lady Gabriella are still here. The Lady Rachel rides on horseback this day wearing her armor.

When asked about her future plans, Myveria reveals that she plans to return to Kingsport to visit with her parents. She’s been away for far too long now. Traveling to Elcadan is on the way home, so Myveria will travel with the group for the present.

The preparations have been made and so the group rides out of Ansimont towards the south and the large city of Elcadan.

GM Notes:

I’ll need the riding order of the formation for the trip to Elcadan. I’ll update the post once this has been provided.

Now what?

Riding Order -

The troops will be arrayed with half in column around the carriage and other non-combatants. The other half will be in skrimish formation out in advance of the column.

As for the group:

Regnak will be out in the lead as scout.
Validar and Corley in the lead of the column.
Acerion just before the Duke.
Ivy, Myveria and Lyonessa in the carriage.
Chareos behind the carriages.
Phelan to the back.
Sherra will be in the rear, as a sort of rear look-out.

The Guardians begin the final leg of their mission to escort the new Duke of Streel to the duchy’s capital, the city of Elcadan. The weather is cold, but otherwise pleasant for the journey to come. Elcadan lies just less than fifty miles to the south of Ansimont. But there is a paved road to lead the way over the Streel Plain, so the trip passes quickly. Empty fields line the road as the group rides along.

About thirty-five miles along the way there is a fork in the road. The side spur leads to the fallen city of Akorros, where it is believed the Devilles are currently holed up. At one time it was here that the group was going to split into two with one group going to Akorros and the rest to Elcadan but that has changed.

Regnak rides past the road, giving it a long look. As Baron Validar and Sir Corley reach the intersection, they notice movement off in that direction! There is something there now that was not there before!

A low moan is heard, the telltale sign of zombies! Four zombies shuffle towards the group and standing further back behind them is a woman who is familiar to Validar. To his astonishment, it is the wench Wendy! But she’s dead! Slain at least twice as far as the Baron knows.

“We have unfinished business to settle,” Wendy arrogantly announces. “But first I thought I’d bring some old friends of yours back. They’ve missed you so much!”

Glancing at the zombies, Valdiar’s jaw drops upon realizing just who they were while alive! There are two women and two men. One of the women is an elf, the others human. Three of the zombies are friends Validar thought he’d never see again: Dalliance, Arafel, and TiCat! The last is the invoker Claudius who was still with the Seekers when Validar departed for home!

“Isn’t this a pleasant reunion?” Wendy says sarcastically.

GM Notes:

And from completely out of left field… Of the PC’s, only Regnak and Sir Acerion can see Wendy & the Zombies without moving into a better view position. Hmm, sounds like the name of punk band!

Happy New Year everyone!

Unexpected events...

Baron Validar of Pyris -

The Guardians make good time on the way to Elcadan. As they pass the crossroad that leads to Akorros, Validar notices the scout Regnak giving the road a long look. This was the way they were to go and Validar wonders for a moment if something unusual is happening here. The hair on the back of his neck is tingling. With the enemies they face, paranoia is common. It is hard to trust anyone, not knowing if they are themselves. With all the illusions about lately, that makes it all the more difficult.

Validar keeps an eye on Regnak and any actions or signals he might give. The danger signal does not subside. As Sir Corley and the baron ride up to the intersection, Validar's attention is in that direction. Then he sees movement, and signals to Corley to look.

Validar considers the situation for a moment. There are many possibilities unfortunately. This witch was killed once and then supposedly disintegrated. It is not likely that she could be standing here.

"Indeed it appears that we do, wench," Validar says back to her, his eyes darting from her to the zombies. "You are an annoyance that needs to be permanently dealt with."

There are many possiilities. This could be an illusion or it could be real. If it is an illusion, it is designed to make Validar react rashly, so he steadies himself, despite wanting to rush at the witch. If it is reality, then Wendelaine has returned from two seeming deaths.

"I killed you once, you lying wench," Validar says. "I can do so again." Validar moves forward to block the advance of the zombies and signals the caravan to halt. "I am not surprised that you were resurrected by the vile slug who fathered you, after we ended your treacherous evil the first time, Wendelaine. Simply burying you was an error I shall not commit again."

Validar has his sword out of its scabbard and is ready for a battle. "She is a mage, of no small power, if she is indeed Wendelaine," Validar tells the others. "If you are indeed. For I heard that the council at Gateway had you disintegrated. I do not think that anything could bring you back from such a fate. If you managed to avoid that fate, rest assured, it is but temporary."

Validar will not yet attack, allowing the other Guardians to move up and ready themselves. He does not guess that these zombies would have the powers that they held in life, but just to be sure, he will prepare to hack at the Claudius zombie as that is likely the most dangerous. Once it gets within range, hack it down.

"I shall relish the opportunity to enact my revenge yet again, wench. This time, there shall be no recovery for you." Validar is very aware that Wendy was somewhat dangerous as a foe before and she could also be one of the Devilles in disguise. "Chareos! What can you do to cause this witch some discomfort?!"

Validar wrote:"I believe you to be correct. I would be disappointed if they expected us to have been dealt with and not check up on their handiwork somehow. I have already informed the cavalry commanders to be on alert for attacks. We will inform everyone to be on their guard when we leave."
"It is hard to imagine just what vile plot these foes will unleash next. They do not seem to operate from any tactical standpoint that I can comprehend. They only seem to seek pain and suffering, not victory."
Validar wrote:"Perhaps you are correct. Certainly, it shall not hurt us to do so. I will inform the ladies of this request."
"As you say, it may not make any difference at all or it could be pivotal. Only time will tell."

The strange woman and four zombies approach the caravan. It is clear from Validar’s reaction that he knows who the woman and the zombies are and that this is all some sort of twisting the knife maneuver on the part of the enemy. It also smells of something else to the young knight.

“Be on guard!” Corley calls out. “This has the smell of a diversion. Be wary of attacks from other quarters!”

Sir Corley will follow the Baron forward, but keeps his eyes open for anyone or thing approaching from another direction.

“Me?” Ivy wonders aloud. “Ride in the carriage? If you think its for the best, then I accept.”

Ivy is startled by the request at first, but accepts. One more day not riding a horse is welcomed.

“I guess I might have to get used to this sort of thing,” Ivy thinks to herself as she climbs in with Lyonessa and Myveria.

The ride is pleasant enough. The sisters chit-cha about this and that and Ivy doesn’t interrupt them. Instead her mind wanders, covering a wide range of topics both important and unimportant. At some point in the day, the carriage stops, interrupting Ivy’s thoughts.

“What’s going on?”

Looking outside, Ivy can see something happening and the word zombie reaches her eyes. Grabbing her mace, Ivy dashes out of the carriage ready to engage any form of undead that she comes across.

Regnak
Regnak rides past the road, giving it a long look. As Baron Validar and Sir Corley reach the intersection, they notice movement off in that direction! There is something there now that was not there before!
Looking down the road to Akorros, Rek lets out a soft sigh as he softly says, “Home, or at least the empty shell it was.” It was some years ago that his uncle passed away leaving Rek to his own devices. It was only shear luck he made it from these lands and entered Mystra’s service.

Drawing his reigns Rek looks to the sound seeing Validar and Corley move towards the creature known as Wendelaine. Grabbing his morningstar, Rek moves forward keeping a weary eye on his flanks; if nothing seems amiss he will move to Corley’s flank and assist him.

Sir Acerion:

Ivy decides to enter the carriage which is a bit of a surprise to Acerion. Regardless, he takes his position by the Duke and continues to instruct his squire as they begin traveling.

A low moan is heard, the telltale sign of zombies! Four zombies shuffle towards the group and standing further back behind them is a woman who is familiar to Validar. To his astonishment, it is the wench Wendy! But she’s dead! Slain at least twice as far as the Baron knows.

Acerion sees the zombies and the one obviously controlling them. Apparently this woman is known to Validar and while the two are 'conversing' Acerion takes a lance from his squire but stays where he is because of his duty to protect the Duke.

“Be on guard!” Corley calls out. “This has the smell of a diversion. Be wary of attacks from other quarters!”

"Exactly what I was thinking," Acerion says and keeps his eyes open. Soon Ivy exits the carriage and he smiles, knowing those zombies are little more than someone's unpleasant memory now.

Sherra:

The ride begins pleasantly enough, but soon we are confronted by an old enemy of Validar's. Uncertain exactly what they are facing up front, Sherra has to rely on the overheard words of Validar and the others to make sense of the situation. Hearing Corley's words of caution, Sherra makes a decision.

She slips off her horse and wills her magical armor to match the terrain. Sherra will move slightly away from the procession, staying low to the ground to get the best advantage her armor can provide. She will look for anyone or anything trying to sneak up on the group from behind and, if she spots anything, will use her bow or her knives depending on how much time and distance she has.

Lyonessa:

Ivy joins her and her sister in the carriage. Lyonessa does her best to include Ivy in their conversations, but a lot of it is just sister talk. After a time everything comes to a halt. Something is going on outside. Before she can see if Dusk has spotted anything, Ivy jumps out.

"I thought we weren't supposed to leave," Lyonessa says aloud. "Certainly the Baron doesn't want us to blow our cover."

Lyonessa will stay where she is and direct Dusk to what's going on outside. She will have him circle and see if there are more enemies than just that small group of zombies and the woman.

Post Continued:

The Duke’s procession moves swiftly along the Streel Road towards Elcadan. Regnak is in front of the procession, with a unit of cavalry behind him widely spread out to cover a larger area. Behind them is a regular procession of cavalry riding in rows of two. Baron Validar and Sir Corley are at the front of this formation. Five rows behind them ride Duke Relon and Sir Acerion. There are two more rows of cavalry and then there is the carriage. Behind the carriage is Chareos. The rest of the cavalry rides after the mage, with Phelan at the rear. Trailing several yards behind Phelan is the lone Sherra.

The procession rides past the road to Akorros. Regnak and the skirmish unit pass the road without incident, but when Validar and Corley reach it they are greeted with an unexpected sight! The wench Wendy and the zombies of four former Seekers are there!
Validar wrote:"I killed you once, you lying wench," Validar says.
“Death holds no fear for me,” Wendy counters smugly. “My father or my grandmother will not allow me to disappear from this world all together no matter what you think you can do.”
Validar wrote:Validar has his sword out of its scabbard and is ready for a battle. "She is a mage, of no small power, if she is indeed Wendelaine," Validar tells the others. "If you are indeed. Validar is very aware that Wendy was somewhat dangerous as a foe before and she could also be one of the Devilles in disguise. "Chareos! What can you do to cause this witch some discomfort?!"
“Why Validar, you flatter me! Yes, I have power. More power than you can imagine! Here’s a small sample!”

Before Validar and Corley can reach combat range with the zombies and before Chareos can get his spell off, Wendy casts her own spell. Upon its completion, a spray of bright colored lights leaps out of her hand! The spray grows larger the further it moves away from Wendy and is seventy feet long at its terminus. The spray is composed of all the colors of the rainbow!

Baron Validar is struck and the spray deals terrible damage to his body. Far more than any mortal blow could do. Havok, Validar’s warhorse is struck and it suffers a different affect! The warhorse begins to buck uncontrollably and cannot be reigned in! Validar falls from his stead, but takes no additional damage from the sudden dismount.

The affect of the rainbow spray on Sir Corley is vastly different! The young knight, and his steed, is turned to stone!

No other Guardians are hit by the spray, but several of the cavalry are struck. Each of them, and their steeds, tumble to the ground as if slain.

Chareos gets off his Iron Spikes spell and five spikes rip into Wendy, but otherwise do her no appreciable harm. Chareos surmises that she has a Stoneskin protection in place.

“That was rude!” Wendy yells at Chareos, “You’ll suffer for that mageling!”

Regnak closes in on Sir Corley’s position, while Ivy rushes to engage the zombies. Once she is close enough, the Priestess Turns Undead and the four zombie Seekers collapse to the ground in true death. The priestess' action brings a smile to Sir Acerion’s face and he remains close the Duke in the formation.

Lyonessa and her sister remain in the carriage, but watchful for what is going on. Sherra dismounts, causes her armor to blend in, and does the same. Both Sherra, and Lyonessa through Dusk’s eyes, see the same thing. A billowing cloud of yellowish green vapors, some twenty feet high and forty feet wide is drifting towards the procession from the rear!

“Cloudkill!” Myveria will exclaim upon seeing the approaching fog bank.

But that’s not all that Sherra and Dusk see. Hovering over the cloud is a ship! It moves through the air as easily as it would on water! The vessel has the look of a small cargo ship and the name “Blackhawk” is emblazoned on the bow. People can be spotted on the deck and they are watching what is going on down below!

GM Notes:

That was pleasant.

Regnak has reached Sir Corley, who has been turned into stone by the Prismatic Spray. The cavalry hit by the spray, seven in all, and their mounts were killed outright.

Ivy is further away from Wendy than Validar and Regnak. Sir Acerion remains by Duke Relon, and about forty yards from Wendy. Lyonessa and Myveria remain in the carriage and Chareos is close to the carriage.

Sherra is the closest to the moving Cloudkill spell and can move out if its path with ease. Those on the Blackhawk do not seem to have noticed her.

Faced with another big challenge...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Wendy, the daughter of the Zombie Master, or someone appearing to be her, shows up on the road to Elcadan. Surprisingly, she brings along the zombified bodies of four former Seekers. Validar is not pleased with this attempt at macabre humor.

“Death holds no fear for me,” Wendy counters smugly. “My father or my grandmother will not allow me to disappear from this world all together no matter what you think you can do.”

"We shall see about that, wench," Validar counters. If this is one of the Devilles masquerading as Wendelaine, then Validar is not going to give away the thought he might guess it to be so.

“Why Validar, you flatter me! Yes, I have power. More power than you can imagine! Here’s a small sample!”

The spray that hits is like a giant hammer slamming into Validar. He reels for a brief moment from the pain and then is sent sailing by a wildly bucking Havok. Apparently, the Prismatic Spray caused his mount to become crazed.

Looking about him as he regains his feet, Validar sees that the troops around him and their horses have all been slain. Sir Corley on the other hand still sits atop Destrier, frozen in a stone-like poze. Validar had heard about this spell before; it is extremely powerful. This example of mage ability likely means that they are not truly facing the Zombie Master's daughter, but one of the Deville hags.

A shout catches Validar's ear and he turns to see the Cloudkill approaching. "The column must be moved," he says to himself. Turning to his squires, Sara and , he gives some orders. "Get the column moving and ahead of that Cloudkill! It will dissipate if you stay far enough away! Keep the carriage and people safe!"

"Chareos! See if you can get rid of more of the hag's Stoneskin." Validar also recognized that the mage was likely protected. If she was powerful enough to cast Prismatic Spray, there would likely be many layers of Stoneskin to penetrate.

"Light Cavalry!" Validar shouts directing the skirmished order troops out to the front. "Circle round the wench and attack from range with spears!"

Validar sees that Ivy has removed the zombies. They were never really any threat anyway, in Validar's mind. "Hit this wench with what magic we have!" Validar will close on the mage appearing as Wendy as he gives all his orders and attack with sword and shield directly. "Use your ranged weapons as well! This hag is a dangerous one!"

Lyonessa is uncertain just what she can do. She knows she shouldn't leave the carriage unless there is no other choice. Seeing the ship riding somehow above the Cloudkill, she knows what she must do.

She will peek out of the carriage just enough to try to find Validar. Hopefully she can see him out of one side or the other. If so, she casts Message. She will say "Riding above the Cloudkill is a ship of some sort," which the baron will hopefully hear as if she was standing next to him and whispering in his ear.

If he does hear it, Lyonessa will begin to relate what she can see through Dusk's eyes, including the name and those riding on the ship. She will keep Dusk circling the ship to give her more information, asking him to do so before she casts the spell.

“That was rude!” Wendy yells at Chareos, “You’ll suffer for that mageling!”
“Hold your forked tongue, wench,” the mage counters back. “Your threats are feeble and weak!”
“She is a mage of no small power!” having seen his iron spikes turned aside by the stoneskin spell. He can’t help but wonder if a Dispel shield is place as well along with other magics.

“Cloudkill!” Myveria will exclaim upon seeing the approaching fog bank.
Chareos chances a look back and sees the fog billowing forward. Chareos will begin to move out of the way of its path, then cast a Magic Missiles into Wendy hoping to soften her up for the ground troops.

Ivy:

Ivy runs forward and once close enough, produces her Holy Symbol and uses the power of the Blue Lady to smite the undead before Baron Validar and Sir Corley. The zombies tumble to the ground and are no longer any threat.

However, the woman with them certainly is a threat! She invokes some magic that Ivy has never seen before, a rainbow flashes before her and a variety of affects are felt in its wake. Ivy cannot help but stare upon seeing Sir Corley turned into stone!

Then she notices the cavalrymen who were struck by the rainbow. They fall to the ground along with their mounts, as if either unconscious or worse.

Changing her course, Ivy rushes to examine the closest man in the hopes of saving his life. But it is not to be. His spirit has already departed.

“These men are dead,” Ivy calls out somewhat in shock.

Turning to the cause of all this, Ivy will cast Silence on her, to prevent her from casting any more destructive spells.

Battler Underway...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

As Validar begins to give orders for the attack against 'Wendy', he hears something disturbing to him, almost as though in a whisper. He glances to his left for a moment, half expecting to see Lyonessa, and no one is there. Still the words were plain, though somewhat faint.

"Riding above the Cloudkill is a ship of some sort." Validar glances back as the attack against Wendy begins and he sees it. A small ship to be sure, but one riding the air, as Serena had spoken about. Validar decides to let the attacks he commanded continue, including his own. They will need to strike the ship, but 'Wendy' is close and dangerous. Hopefully Sherra will be able to make some mischief until others can begin their attack against the ship.

In the back of his mind, Validar begins to form a plan. And the thought of capturing a flying ship is quite appealing.

Ivy confirms that his soldiers striken by the Prismatic Spray are indeed dead. They were good men, some of the best of Pyris army. "You will pay for all you've done, you soulless hag!," Validar shouts as he attacks the wench.

Acerion can only watch the battle. His dear Ivy easily destroys the zombies, but this Wendy does serious damage with her magic. As much as he would love to drive his lance through her evil heart, he must uphold his duty.

Alerted to the threat of the Cloudkill, Acerion turns to the Duke, "We must keep moving, Your Grace." Acerion will keep himself between Wendy and the Duke, his lance and shield ready should he have need for them.

"Now that's a strange sight," Sherra mutters to herself, then a smile crosses her lips. "A flying ship? I want it!"

Sherra will try to judge the speed of the ship to figure out how far back she needs to be for her Boots of Levitation to carry her up high enough to be even with its deck. She will use her Armor of Blending as best she can and start levitating once she finds a good spot. It's her intention to board the ship stealthfully while the crew's attention is diverted to everything else that is going on around her.
