Elfquest #24
Inside the Elfin Palace, the explorers thought they came face to snout with a green dragon. But it was only an illusion and that those believed to have been killed by false dragon were only unconscious. While the fallen are revived, a noise is heard. Nariya hears it first and she alerts Sherwood and Laucian. Together they move closer to one of the inner huts to see what is making the noise.
Laucian has a thought and calls out “Friend or Foe” in centaur.
“Please, don’t hurt me,” a young voice answers.
You hear more movement and a young male centaur steps up to the door. He’s relived to see that you are most elves.
The lad is named Caperling, and he’s the son of the leader of the centaur tribe. He has the habit of wandering off exploring on his own when he was grabbed and brought here.
“There’s no way out of here,” Caperling explains. “That mean old elf that keeps me here can walk through trees! Food is brought in regular enough, but it’s really boring here. Can you get me out of here?”
(In human terms, Caperling is about an 8 or 9 year old.)
In the background, the cooshee’s are revived and happily greet their wakers with licks to the face. They’ll check out Caperling and after their inspection, pay him no heed. Lady still seems to have the scent and wants to continue on to find Lilia.
Now what?

Looking at Sherwood, “We should return him to his clan. Perhaps Talen can take the barge and reunite him with his kin. It would show the centaurs we honor our word and alliances as well as remove the child from harm.”
“That depends on your actions, little one.” His bow draw aiming towards the sound of the hoof sounds as he sees the young centaur step forward. He eyes the creature for several moments then the dogs pay it no mind. Lowering his bow, “Well met, Caperling. And the being in which you speak is far from an elf.”realizing the child wouldn't understand he holds off on speaking any more of it.“Please, don’t hurt me,” a young voice answers.

Nariya:
Sherwood gestures for silence. He then gestures for Nariya to take one flank, and Laucian the other. Together, all three of them will discover just who or what is making this noise.
Nariya nods and pulls out a spear. She advances slowly, looking around to ensure they aren't ambushed.

"As long as we can get him out of here," Nariya reminds them. Of course just because Caperling couldn't get out doesn't mean its difficult from this side. She will begin to looking at the door to see if anything is odd. If she doesn't see anything obvious, Nariya will ask Kylie or Sherwood to examine it better.

Kylie:
Hearing the sound of hooves, Kylie looks back over her shoulder from her place by the cooshies to see the young centaur emerge. She smiles happily at the words of the youngster.
"Hello, Caperling. My name is Kylie. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Turning, she notices Lady edging away from the party and looking back like she wants them to continue on. "I think we should continue our search for Lilia as soon as possible."

It sounds like a good plan, though Kylie doesn't say so. Talen's inexperience makes him a good choice for this task. Plus, he has one of the leaf medallions. However, he is a friend, and she doesn't want to hurt his feelings by mentioning his lack of experience.Laucian wrote:Looking at Sherwood, “We should return him to his clan. Sherwood:
Sherwood moves closer to the source of the noise, Lifeshield firmly in his hand.
Turning to Nariya and Laucian, Sherwood will say, “Do you think you could give Talen directions to reach the centaur village that he can follow?”
Sherwood moves closer to the source of the noise, Lifeshield firmly in his hand.
Sherwood nods his approval to Laucian’s request. Such actions turn out to be unnecessary as the source of the noise is the missing centaur youth that we need to gain the centaur medallion.Laucian wrote:Gesturing to Sherwood, Laucian tries to catch his attention, “Let me speak with it,” he whispers faintly. If Sherwood agree he will speak in Centaurian (sp) “Friend or Foe?”. If he does no he will merely take up a position where he can get a good shot in if the need is there.
“I agree,” Sherwood responds. “Having him stay with us would be very dangerous. However, there is the issue of would Talen be able to find the centaur village? He was with me and when you visited the village, so he’s never been there before. Plus I’m sure that Caperling wouldn’t be able to find his village from overhead. We’re going to need someone to provide directions or lead them to the centaur village.”Laucian wrote:Looking at Sherwood, “We should return him to his clan. Talen:
Talen joins in waking the cooshee’s. They lick Talen in response, nearly bowling him over in the process.
The centaur youth is found and Talen has never seen a centaur this closer before. What an unusual creature!
“So what do we do now,” Talen asks joining the others.
“Dragon fear?” Talen parrots in obvious confusion. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of such a thing before. Have you fought a dragon before? How do you overcome such a thing?”Kylie wrote:Looking down, Kylie sees Talen return and she smiles. "Dragon fear. A perfectly normal reaction, Talen. Don't fret about it.”
“Uhm, sure! Sounds good.” Kylie then flies off, leaving Talen behind. “Hey! What for me!”Kylie wrote:"Come, help me check on the cooshee’s. Okay?" Kylie flies over and begins checking on the canines, paying particular attention to Dapple. Hopefully, she and Talen will be able to wake them all.

Groaning as she awakes she says, “Not yet.” Then closes her eyes again then realizes her dilemma. Gathering up her longsword she looks around cautiously. “Where did the Dragon go? Never before have I felt such fear.” She says as she looks for the dragon more.
She will take out her crossbow and remain on guard as the centaur is dealt with. Her eyes linger on the creature with interest as she has not seen many before in her short life.

The explorers have rescued Caperling, the centaur youth held captive by Moorkroft. He’s a young boy who really doesn’t know much about what is going on here in the Elfin Palace. What he calls a “mean old-elf” was holding him captive here. Caperling couldn’t find anyway to escape this area, but that was because he didn’t have an elfin pendant. The tree portals work normally for those who do, so you can take Caperling back to the arrival area.
Talk turns on taking Caperling back to the centaur village right away to keep him out of harm’s way. Talen is suggested to carry out this task, however he’s never been to the village before and you’re unsure if Caperling could find the way, especially from overhead. So exactly what to do remains up in the air.
Lady is very eager to continue the hunt for Lilia. The cooshee seems to indicate that you need to go to the far side of this area, almost opposite where you first entered. Another tree portal is there and Caperling confirms that the old elf that held him here comes from that way.
From out of nowhere, five Magic Missiles slam into Sherwood, startling the mage! However, the missiles just fizzle out as they reach their target. Lifeshield’s protection saves Sherwood from harm.
Looking back, you can see an old hunchbacked elf on the far side of the area in the general direction Lady wants to go. He’s dressed in black robes and holds an equally black staff in his hands. His skin is heavily wrinkled and he looks ancient.
“Thank you for bringing me the rest of the medallions,” the elf calls out. “Now I can summon back the Mother Tree and destroy it once and for all! As a reward I’ll make your deaths as painless as possible!”
The elf then starts to cast a spell…

Immediately, Kylie soars toward the ceiling, angling off to the side to gain as much separation as possible. It occurs to Kylie that Moorkroft has used illusions already, so it is possible that this Moorkroft is in some way illusionary as well. Calling up her Ice Wall spell, she attempts to drop it on Moorkroft from as high as the ceiling allows. She then starts to look for an angle from which she can safely cast Lightning Bolt without catching any of her comrades in the path or reflection, perhaps using a forked bolt to reduce the length of the path.Sherwood wrote:“Spread out! Valena and Laucian fire arrows, while Nariya throws her spear. Valena’s arrow reaches the Archmage first and harmlessly passes right through him! Nariya’s spear does the same and you all quickly realize that is yet another illusion! Laucian embeds his arrow in the deck right before the illusion and silence engulfs the immediate area. The silence ruins the spell the illusionary mage was casting.
The illusionary Moorkroft begins to step back, away from the area of silence. Lia, Sherwood and the cooshee’s all close in on Moorkroft. The first cooshee arrives and leaps at the mage, but again harmlessly passes through the illusion.
Hovering overhead, Kylie sees that the target is an illusion and holds her spell. However, from her vantage point she does spy movement from further back near the exit Lady wants to go through. A second Moorkroft is there and this one’s movements are duplicated by the illusion!
Unnoticed by all, Talen circles around the outer edge of this area. Caperling takes the elfin pendant and passes out of this area into the griffon stable where you first arrived.
GM Notes:
Sherwood, Lia, and the cooshee’s are all near the illusionary Moorkroft. Valena, Nariya, and Laucian are further away with Kylie overhead. Talen is circling around the outside edge of this area. From the position they are in Lia, Sherwood, Nariya, and Laucian will be able to see the real Moorkroft further back should they look in that direction or after they are alerted to his presence.
Also, Laucian would realize that he’s seen something like this before, back during the huge battle in the orc caves in New Frontiers #54-56. Opikus employed a Projected Image that created an illusionary double through which spells could be cast.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Kylie:
Kylie hesitates in casting her spell due to concerns that this Moorkroft may be illusionary. Sure enough, the others' attacks demonstrate that it is, indeed, an illusion.
She scans the area quickly in the manner that Rat had taught her, her eyes catching movement near the far exit. Focussing on it, she sees that it is Moorkroft, his actions matching those of the illusion.
"It's an illusion!" she calls out to the others. "He's back there by the exit, near Lady!" Immediately, she unleashes a spell at the mage.

If she can do so without harming her friends, Kylie will cast Lightning Bolt on what she believes is the real Moorkroft. If not, she'll drop the Ice Wall on him as planned.

Seeing that the Mage is indeed a Illusion, Lia turns her head towards the real one at Kylie’s call. Her eyes narrow as she takes out her Lioness statue and summons them forth, “Go, feed.” Pointing at the mage. . Lia will thenattempt to dispel the Illusion.

He will then fire a normal arrow at the mage.
“It is far more." Knocking a stunning arrow to his bow and taking aim at the real Morkroft, “It casts spells as he does, almost as though it is a mirror image of himself!”"It's an illusion!" she calls out to the others. Sherwood
Sherwood:
Before reaching his target, Sherwood sees the attacks of the others passing right through it! It is another powerful illusions. It seems that this Moorkroft favors illusions and other types of diversions to carry out his plans. Silence blankets the immediate area and this stops Moorkroft from casting spells.
Looking around, Sherwood sees what he assumes to be the real Moorkroft. Sherwood gestures towards the real one, hoping that the archers will fire another Silence Arrow at him. With Lifeshield in one hand, Sherwood takes his flame tongue in the other. He’ll rush the mage once more, hoping to make himself an inviting target for any spell Moorkroft might cast.

Valena:
Much to Valena’s astonishment, her arrow passes harmlessly through the target! What happens next is rather chaotic. Nariya’s spear goes through the mage as do some of the cooshee’s! Sherwood gestures in the direction of further back, but it isn’t clear what he’s referring to. Kylie clears up the mystery.

Grabbing another arrow, Valena sets it in her bow and dashes back in the direction indicated. She circles around to the left, so as to approach the mage from his right. That should give her a clear shot once he’s in sight. A shot that Valena will immediately take.Kylie wrote:"It's an illusion!" she calls out to the others. "He's back there by the exit, near Lady!" Nariya:
Valena and Laucian fire arrows, while Nariya throws her spear. Valena’s arrow reaches the Archmage first and harmlessly passes right through him! Nariya’s spear does the same and you all quickly realize that is yet another illusion! Laucian embeds his arrow in the deck right before the illusion and silence engulfs the immediate area. The silence ruins the spell the illusionary mage was casting.
Nariya realizes too late that Moorkroft is another illusion. As she tries to decide on what to do, the real Moorkroft is spotted.

Post Continued:
Once more the group has encountered an illusion generated by Moorkroft. This time it was an illusionary copy of the mage himself, but one that he could cast spells through! Being only an illusion, any attack harmlessly passed through it. Kylie spots the real mage and relays his location to the others. She then tosses a Lightning Bolt and it does some damage to Moorkroft, but he remains ready to fight.
Lia summons her lionesses and commands them to join the cooshee’s in rushing Moorkroft. Sherwood is among the cooshee pack rushing towards the mage with both his swords drain.
Laucian and Nariya train their bows on the real Moorkroft and fire. Both hit the desired target and harmlessly bounce off. Clearly a Stoneskin protects Moorkroft!
Valena circles off to the left, using the outer walkway to reach Moorkroft. She comes in from his flank and fires arrows of her own. Valena’s shafts do the same as Laucian and Nariya’s and just harmlessly bounce off.
As Sherwood, the cooshee’s, and the lionesses close in on Moorkroft, the evil mage grabs his staff and prepares to use it to cast a spell. However, Talen rushes in from Moorkroft’s right and connects with his bastard sword! Moorkroft remains unharmed from the attack!
Talen’s attack causes Moorkroft to turn to face the half-elf. As he does so, the spell from Moorkroft’s staff is unleashed right into Talen! A Cone of Cold radiates out, turning the air about Talen icy cold. Talen is hurt from the attack, but he still lives.
The cooshee’s and lionesses reach Moorkroft right after the Cone of Cold went off. They leap up and swarm the mage, knocking him off his feet. The animals’ tear mercilessly into Moorkroft and what remains of his protective magic are quickly worn away by the numerous attacks. The evil mage screams are frightening to hear.
By the time Sherwood reaches Moorkroft very little remains. The mages clothes have been ripped to shreds. But the site of the mages body startles Sherwood! It’s not a mauled corpse! Rather than being flesh and blood, Moorkroft’s body seems to be decomposing into… snow?!

Kylie:
Her bolt blazes with electrical fury as it strikes this new Moorkroft. He staggers, but remains upright. She can see wisps of smoke rising off his body even as a number of her companions' arrows bounce away.
Talen slashes at Moorkroft, but the blade refuses to bite. In retaliation, Moorkroft blasts him with a Cone of Cold spell, which Kylie recognises from descriptions she has heard. "NO!" she yells, fearing for her new friend's life. It is hard to tell beneath all that ice and frost, but she thinks he is still alive.
The cooshees and Lyonessa's lions swarm over Moorkroft, pulling him down and tearing him to pieces. Strangely, there is no sign of blood...
Flying down for a closer look, Kylie is shocked to find snow rather than a body. She stammers for several moments, trying to make sense of it.
"Was this really Moorkroft, Sherwood, or just some kind of icy simulacrum?" Now that she thinks about it, it wouldn't make that much sense for Moorkroft to attack them way out here. More likely, he would use tricks and tactics to try to use up their spells and wear them down.

Sherwood:
Sherwood rushes the enemy mage while avoiding being run over by the cooshee’s and a pair of lionesses. Moorkroft appears to be ready to use his staff to attack when Talen suddenly rushes in from seeming out of nowhere. The staff’s spell goes off on Talen, covering him with a Cone of Cold. Surprisingly, he seems to survive the assault.
Moorkroft goes down in a sea of cooshee’s and the elfin dogs literally rip the mage apart. Clearly, these elfin dogs are a force to be reckoned with! However, it appears that this was not the real Moorkroft either! Instead of blood, there is snow.
Then there is Talen to deal with. The lad disobeyed instructions, but seems to have meant well. His timely intervention probably saved the cooshee’s from death. This isn’t the time to delve any deeper into this subject. It’ll have to wait until a later date.
“Talen, is Caperling safe? I appreciate what you did here, but his safety is your top priority especially now that you’re wounded. Return with him to the barge was planned. We’ll join you as soon as we can.”
Turning to the others, Sherwood will say, “We’ll be moving on to the next area. I’ll take the point. Count to five and then the rest of you follow. Keep spread out like before. Let’s move!”

What happens next, happens quickly. Talen is suddenly beside Moorkroft, attacking him with his sword. The evil wizard casts some spell on him right before he’s taken down and ripped to shreds by the cooshee’s!
Valena moves closer, keeping an arrow ready to fire at all times. Instead it seems to not be the real Moorkroft! All of this seems to have been for nothing.
Seeing that Talen is injured, Valena will cast Cure Moderate Wounds on him.
Sherwood calls for the group to move forwards. Val has her bow in hand and is ready to go through when instructed.

Talen:
Reaching the target, Talen swings his bastard sword with all his might! And it doesn’t harm him at all! It’s hard to say who is more surprised, Talen or Moorkroft.
The next thing Talen knows, a spell covers him and he feels extremely cold and not very well. The cooshee’s’ swarm the mage and he goes down. It’s all over by the time Talen gathers his wits. It wasn’t the real mage and the group is going to be continuing on with him.
Valena heals Talen and that makes him feel better.
“I’ll need someone to let me back into the first area, unless you want me to take one of the remaining pendants.”

“Thank you, Talen.” he says evenly as the young elf looks dejected. “Come on, Ill talk you through.” he says evenly.
As he is walking Laucian will say, “You did well, you followed your heart. Now you must learn to balance between your heart and what is asked of you.”
