Hammerfall #6

With the return of Grondar and Rat from the Dumathoin temple, the dwarves are ready to engage the next round of frost giants. It’s the pair that stands guard outside the mines were the dwarves had been toiling.

“We don’t have much time,” Mayor Arlos warns. “They are probably beginning to wonder where the next shift of workers are.”

Sure enough, looking towards the way to the mines, a lone frost giant is approaching the town! The dwarves rush to attack while the giant bellows a warning to his comrades!

Aria, Daraden, and Arlos fling their throwing axes at the approaching giant! Aria misses, while Daraden’s throw is true. Arlos threw two axes and both of them embed in the giant’s chest!

Farian and Grondar fire their crossbows. Farian misses with his lone shaft, while one of Grondar’s strikes the giant in the shoulder. Rat joins the fight, throwing a stone from his sling. The small missile hits the giant in the throat, causing him obvious discomfort.

The rest of the dwarves, Senoia, Dougan, Lotha, and Opal do not have any ranged weapons with them.

The giant reaches into its sack and hurtles a rock towards the dwarves! It hits Daraden, knocking him off stride.

Grondar and Farian continue their crossbow fire, while most of the dwarves rush the giant. Grondar embeds two bolts in the giant and Farian adds one of his own. After those last hits, the giant stops and falls over.

But as the dwarves reach the downed giant, the second mine guard approaches. Aria and Arlos rush the giant. Aria wildly swings her battle-axe at the giant’s right leg. Her first strike nearly severs the giant’s leg! The frost giant cries out in pain and the second strike completes the job. The giant falls as a blood covered Aria dives of to one side.

Mayor Arlos follows up with a pair of powerful thrusts from his short sword to the giants’ chest. The giant is dead before anyone else can reach it. Just like that, the first two giants go down. Senoia whacks the first giant with her war hammer just to make sure it is down.

Looking further down the road, you can see activity in the frost giant camp. There are five of them in all and they begin to lob rocks as the band of dwarves. They are easy enough to avoid at this range. The giants then begin to rush to the attack, dashing across the snow without any difficulty.

GM Notes:

Two down, five to go! The giants are 200 yards away at the moment. Of the ranged attacks, only crossbows and Rat’s sling can reach them right now. It’s too far for throwing axes. The axes that were thrown can be recovered.

The giants will reach Hand-to-hand range at the start of the 3rd round. Throwing axes will be able to reach them in the second round.

Arlos will warn against trying to cross the snow drifts to reach the giants. Frost Giants are not hindered by snow, like a dwarf would be. It's better to fight them on the cleared roads.

Current Hit Points:

Aria - 96 of 99
Daraden – 35 of 45
Farian - 71 of 75
Senoia - 31 of 45

Would it be possible to use the buildings of the town as cover to flank and surround the giants as they run forward?

You're about 55 yards from the nearest building. (Roughly about 2 squares below the mine entrance on the Mountain Lake map. Area C)

If you just run for the town without making any attacks, you'll beat the giants there. But of course, they can still throw rocks.

Rat:
Grondar wrote:"I saw those bodies too, and none of them appeared to be a high priest, which fits the story Arlos told us. It saddens me to hear that the altar was broken, as that means that this place is no longer sanctified. What did you mean by floating treasure?"
“Hanging over their altar, padre,” Rat answers easily. “A gem incrusted block of solid gold! As big as a house it was!”

Outside, the dwarves go on the offensive and attack the giants! Sheesh, I guess subtly isn’t something a dwarf is want to do.

Rat pitches in and carries his own, albeit small, weight. He tosses stones from his sling from a very safe distance. The first giant goes down quickly and second quickly follows. But then another passel of giants are on their way. Rat backs away, but will continue to keep tossing stones. Should a giant get close enough to attack, Rat will turn tail and dash off a safe distance before continuing with his sling stones.

Aria:

What Aria hopes to be the last battle against the frost giants begins! Again she throws her axe at the first giant, but this time misses with it. Undaunted Aria continues to rush the enemy. However, he falls from ranged attacks before she can get there.

No matter, as the second giant witnessed the attack and came a running! A wide grin on her face, Aria rushes to engage this new arrival!

“Greetings from the Giantkiller!” Aria cries out as she swings her axe.

The weapon nearly slices through the giant’s leg and the return stroke completely separates it! Blood flies everywhere, but it doesn’t bother Aria at all. She’s too lost in the joy of battle!

The giant falls and once on the ground it is easy prey. Aria is mildly surprised to see Mayor Arlos there delivering the fatal blows! Clearly, he is an accomplished warrior in his own right!

“The Father of Battle would approve!”

Gazing about, the frost giant camp has been stirred up. Five of the giant icicles are coming! Aria stands her ground and awaits their arrival. The mayor’s warning about entering the snowdrifts makes sense to her, so Aria stays on the road. She’ll toss her throwing axe when able and then engage the giants with her battle-axe when they arrive.

“Come on you, lumbering mutants of the earth! This follower of the Rock of Battle has a gift for you!!”

Aria, Daraden, and Arlos fling their throwing axes at the approaching giant! Aria misses, while Daraden’s throw is true. Arlos threw two axes and both of them embed in the giant’s chest!

"This be your last day!" Daraden yells as he hurls his axe. It finds its mark and he grins as he closes the distance, but the giant retaliates.

The giant reaches into its sack and hurtles a rock towards the dwarves! It hits Daraden, knocking him off stride.

"Oofff, whoah!" Daraden exclaims, nearly finding himself face first into the earth. He barely keeps his feet under him. Catching sight of the attack, Darkfang circles around Daraden, yipping in what almost could be laughter.

"Quit yer yipping and get up der!" Daraden grumbles, managing to stay upright. His thigh and knee are throbbing, but he'll live. A lone giant isn't going to be bringing him down!

The other dwarves are quick to bring down both giants and there is a moment's calm before the others in the distance are suddenly aware of what is transpiring. Soon five more lumbering brutes can be seen, and they're hurling rocks! Their aim is in dire need of improvement though as none of the dwarves are phased by the poorly-hurled missles.

Arlos will warn against trying to cross the snow drifts to reach the giants. Frost Giants are not hindered by snow, like a dwarf would be. It's better to fight them on the cleared roads.

Retrieving his throwing axe, Daraden heeds the words of caution and waits on the road. Once a giant comes into range, he will throw his axe and direct Darkfang to harass them along their flank. He doesn't want to risk the wolf in a direct confrontation.

"Really? Wow, that must have been quite a sight. I wonder where it came from?" Grondar is amazed at Rat's revelation.

The first giant is encountered wandering into town in search of the next shift of slaves. He is destined to be disappointed as the dwarves fall on him and quickly slaw him. His partner is not far behind, but they destroy this icy horror as well.

Unfortunately, the noise has drawn the attention of their frigid buddies in the frost giant camp. Soon the over-large nitwits are running in the direction of the victorious dwarves. Fortunately, they have a few moments before they will arrive. Seeing that a couple of their number are wounded, Grondar offers healing to Senoia and Daraden. Should either or both accept, he will convert Hold Poison spells to CSWs.

That done, Grondar will gird himself with TruthGiver and his shield, and prepare to meet the approaching giants. He will follow the road to the east and south if it looks like he can use that to flank the giants. If any of their friends (Senoia, Dougan, Lotha, or Opal) know how to use a crossbow, Grondar will let them use his.

The battle against the frost giants continues!
Aria wrote:“The Father of Battle would approve!”
“I am sure that Clangeddin Silverbeard would be pleased with your combat prowess, Lady Aria,” Arlos compliments. “I saw much battle while I was younger. It’s been a long time, but I think I remember how to take down a giant!”

The two mine guards are quickly dealt with and the rest of the frost giants rush in from their camp. The giants toss rocks at first, but at this distance they are easy enough to avoid. The force of five giants then begins to run across the snowdrifts as easily as if it was an open field. Arlos suggests staying out of the snow, as it would put you at a disadvantage.

Rat and Farian fire their ranged weapons at the approaching giants. Farian is off the mark, but Rat does have a stone bounce off one of the giants.

Grondar hands Opal his crossbow and she fires bolts from it, but the young dwarf misses. Grondar casts Cure Serious Wounds on Senoia and she is healed of her damage.

“My thanks, “ Senoia offers. “I’m in better shape to pound these walking snowmen!”

Once close enough, those with throwing axes toss their weapons! Aria and Daraden miss, and Arlos connects once. Those firing crossbows and slings miss.

Grondar offers to heal Daraden, but he has yet to respond.

Finally the giants reach hand-to-hand range! Aria’s nearly shatters another giant’s leg with her attacks. Daraden strikes from the other side and that giant falls. But before he drops, the giant strikes Aria with his own ax, doing damage to her.

Farian strikes a second giant with his warhammer, getting its attention. Grondar strikes twice with TruthGiver and the giant nearly falls from the powerful blow! The giant retaliates, wounding Grondar with his weapon. Arlos puts that giant down for good with his shortsword.

Dougan, Senoia, Opal, and Lotha tag team a third giant. Each dwarf connects with his or her weapons and their combined efforts put it down! Dougan is struck in the process, knocking the Priest of Moradin to the ground.

Three of the five giants go down quickly, causing the last two to pause. From out of nowhere, a flaming warhammer flies in and impacts one of the giants in the head! Looking back, you can see that Oran Firehammer and Salem have arrived!

The dwarves swarm the last two giants and they quickly go down. In short order the threat of the frost giants is over!

Salem reports that they got Grondar’s message and traveled all night to get here. The reinforcements Aria order should have already left Fort Fletcher. Mountain Lake has been liberated from the frost giants!

Daraden Stormbeard:

Seeing that a couple of their number are wounded, Grondar offers healing to Senoia and Daraden.

"For this scratch? No not now, Grondar," Daraden declines. "Save yer spells in case we be needing them later."

Once close enough, those with throwing axes toss their weapons! Aria and Daraden miss, and Arlos connects once. Those firing crossbows and slings miss.

"Bah," Daraden grumbles, then motions for Darkfang to take off. As the wolf moves off to one side, circling around the giants, Daraden prepares for the battle to get a lot more personal.

Finally the giants reach hand-to-hand range! Aria’s nearly shatters another giant’s leg with her attacks. Daraden strikes from the other side and that giant falls. But before he drops, the giant strikes Aria with his own ax, doing damage to her.

"Don't go nowhere," Daraden says as he buries his weapon deep into the giant. The brute topples, but manages a swing at Aria, but she takes the blow and dismisses it, remaining on her feet.

He turns and sees two other giants falling, and then reinforcements arrive! A flaming hammer is the beginning of the final death throws of the giant occupation of Mountain Lake. Rushing in, Daraden and the others finish off the last of giants.

"A glorious victory this be!" Daraden proclaims. He is more than ready for some food and ale, but knows they are far from done here. He expects Aria will have plans for them all, but for now a bit of celebration is in order.

Grondar hands off his crossbow to Opal, then turns to heal Senoia.
Senoia wrote:“My thanks, “ Senoia offers. “I’m in better shape to pound these walking snowmen!”
"Good. I expect we'll be hardpressed in this battle."

Daraden declines the offer of healing, so Grondar prepares himself for battle with the frost giants. The giants quickly draw close and battle is joined. Grondar strikes one of them twice, but is wounded in return for his efforts.

The first three giants are slain quickly, causing the other two to hesitate. It is a mistake they won't survive to learn from. In mere moments it is all over as the dwarves overwhelm the pair with the help of the newly-arrived Oran Firehammer and Salem.
Daraden wrote:"A glorious victory this be!" Daraden proclaims. He is more than ready for some food and ale, but knows they are far from done here. He expects Aria will have plans for them all, but for now a bit of celebration is in order.
"Indeed it is, friend Daraden. I suggest we return to the inn for rest and celebration."

Once they are back at the inn, Grondar will circulate amonst those who were injured, casting healing spells as needed to bring everyone back to full strength for the morrow's trials. In the morning, he will perform devotions and update his spell requests.

Rat:

As Rat watches from a very safe distance, the last of the giants goes down in a bloody heap.

“Wow, remind me never to get anyone here angry!” Rat mutters, mostly to himself.

With the giants down, that means just one thing! Their belongings are now unclaimed!

“I’ll check out there sacks for loot!” Rat calls out joyfully.

Turns out that the sacks are larger than the halfling! He disappears inside much like his namesake. He’ll check out each sack and then the giants’ camp for goodies.

Aria:
Mayor Arlos wrote:“I am sure that Clangeddin Silverbeard would be pleased with your combat prowess, Lady Aria,” Arlos compliments. “I saw much battle while I was younger. It’s been a long time, but I think I remember how to take down a giant!”
“Thanks!” Aria beams at the compliment. “Father taught me all he could, but there is nothing like experience. Taking down a giant is just like taking down a tree. Hit enough times and it’ll fall over!”

The last of the giants rushes our position. An axe is thrown, but it misses its intended target. No matter, as it the hand to hand fighting that will decide the outcome of this battle.

Like before, Aria goes at one of the legs with the intent of breaking it so that the giant falls. Her strategy works and the giant falls to its death. But it manages to get a good hit in first. Undaunted, Aria continues to battle on.

Then a Firehammer comes flying in, smacking one of the remaining giants right in the forehead! Oran and Salem have finally arrived. The last two giants go down quickly under the dwarven onslaught.
Daraden wrote:"A glorious victory this be!" Daraden proclaims. He is more than ready for some food and ale, but knows they are far from done here. He expects Aria will have plans for them all, but for now a bit of celebration is in order.
Aria holds her axe high over head. “Victory is ours!” She’s a bloody mess, but very little of it is her own blood.
Grondar wrote:"Indeed it is, friend Daraden. I suggest we return to the inn for rest and celebration."
“I second the notion! We’ve more than earned some ale, a good meal, and some shuteye. Night will be upon us before we know it.”

Looking around, Aria sees Rat rush to search for valuables. She shakes her head slightly, but makes no comment. But she will request of Arlos that someone keep an eye on the halfling.

“We’re going to get some rest,” Aria tells Mayor Arlos. “More dwarves will be arriving with weapons, food, and other supplies. Use them as you see fit. Your people shouldn’t be bothered during the daytime, so you have time to prepare. I’d recommend keeping an eye on that mine for trouble.”

Aria could say more, but she doesn’t wish to tell the Mayor how to run his own town! If he’s a veteran of battle, then he already knows what needs to be done.

Back at the Inn Aria will clean up, have some food and an ale or two before retiring. She asks to be awakened at Dusk, so that there is time to get ready for the evening’s activities.

To her companions, she’ll say, “You’ve done well this day. Eat, drink, and get some rest. We’ll be back in the thick of battle come the evening!”

Farian

Firing his crossbow at the giant, farian grumbles at missing while rat hits!! A halfling better then a dwarf!! Not to be out done Farian readies his signature black shield and warhammer and runs forward to the closest unoccupied giant and slugs him with his warhammer, drawing its attention of its cold blue eyes. “Come on then, Let us see what you are made of!”

To her companions, she’ll say, “You’ve done well this day. Eat, drink, and get some rest. We’ll be back in the thick of battle come the evening!”

“Aye and drink we will!” as he takes out his pipe and lights it puffing out a plume of white smoke. “Nothing like the wind in ye hair and Giant blood at ye feet.”

Farian will eat hardily and then rest up for the coming trials.

Daraden chuckles at that as he retrieves his axe. He will definitely be partaking in the hospitality offered and a good portion of food and ale.

Once they are back at the inn, Grondar will circulate amonst those who were injured, casting healing spells as needed to bring everyone back to full strength for the morrow's trials.

"Thank ye kindly," Daraden says upon receiving the magical healing. The wound wasn't bad, but it is nice to not have it itch if it had healed normally.

Daraden will enjoy the evening, making sure Darkfang is fed. The wolf probably won't be allowed indoors, but he will make sure to go out and spend some time with his loyal companion before getting some much welcome sleep.

The force of frost giants has been defeated! While Rat goes off in search of their treasure, the rest of the dwarves head back towards the inn.
Aria wrote:“We’re going to get some rest,” Aria tells Mayor Arlos. “More dwarves will be arriving with weapons, food, and other supplies. Use them as you see fit. Your people shouldn’t be bothered during the daytime, so you have time to prepare. I’d recommend keeping an eye on that mine for trouble.”
“We’ll be ready when you wake, Lady Aria,” the mayor vows. “The rest of our entranced brethren will be rounded up and await the freedom your priest can provide. The mine will be guarded. Rest well and know that you and your companions have the gratitude of all of us. Come let us begin to pay back what we owe. There are rooms for you at the inn, hot food to warm the belly, and ale to take the chill off.”

The news that the frost giants have been defeated quickly makes it way through the town. The families from the caves come forth and the inhabitants of Mountain Lake begin to go back to their normal lives. The citizens are grateful and make sure that their rescuers have plenty of food, plenty of drink, and companionship if need be.

The ale flows and Arlos launches into a local drinking toast. “By the Mines!” he cries out and those assembled answer back as one. “By the Metal!” is next, and the last part is “By my Beard!”

During the festivities, Rat returns with what he’s found. There is much gold, the payment given to the giants for their service. Then there’s some silver and copper coins.

Daraden learns that Darkfang is allowed indoors in Mountain Lake. Turns out that wolves are very common pets in the area. Most families have one or two of them. Cave bears are also kept as pets, but there isn’t as many of those. While he has his fill, Senoia sets down next to Daraden.

“You’re pretty handy with an axe,” Senoia notes. “And your wolf is quite the companion. I’m glad that you joined up with us.”

Elsewhere, Opal Kreigstrum approaches Farian. “Can I join you?” She asks tentatively. “I’ve never seen a woman warrior like Aria before! She’s amazing! Have you traveled with her long?”

Grondar circulates healing those in need along with Dougan. The festivities end far too soon for most, as sleep is needed. Everyone retires and the town of Mountain Lake goes about its business.

Later, Grondar rises and goes through his morning devotions. However, this time his devotions take an unusual turn. He becomes aware of a lady dwarf in his presence!

“Do not be alarmed,” the dwarf maiden says. She’s an older woman who also wears the common garb of Berronar. “I am Denia Steelstrike. You’ve done a great deed here and Lady Truesilver has granted you more priestly powers. You are now powerful enough to converse with me when you pray for spells. I will be your liaison to the Revered Mother.”

Later Grondar discovers that his chat with Denia took place only in his mind. She was not really present. They can only converse while he prays and meditates.

The adventurers rise and discover that a hot meal awaits them. Not only that, but the dwarven relief that Aria requested arrived while you slept. Among the new arrivals is Jenna Firehand and she’s pleased to see that Grondar is well. She was concerned after hearing that there were giants involved!

Jenna tells Aria that yesterday, while the adventurers were in the mines, that reinforcements arrived at Fort Fletcher. There were more workers and some guards among them. Surprisingly, there was priestess and her son among them. Most of the new arrivals made the journey to Mountain Lake.

Much to Grondar’s surprise, he already knows the priestess and her son! It is Ziana and Kex Lavaflow! Ziana is the widow of Kax Lavaflow, a Priest of Moradin who was slain by agents of the Cold One many weeks ago. The only survivor of the attack was Lyonessa and the Guardians return Kax’s body to Ansimont where they met Ziana.

(GM Note: That was back in New Frontiers #21-22. Ziana wasn’t named at that time.)

“We meet again, Grondar,” Ziana says. “It does my heart good to see that you are well.”

She goes on to explain that life in Ansimont wasn’t the same after Kax’s death. “It became so bad that I couldn’t face living there any more. When I heard about the reclamation efforts up here, I decided to assist. So Kex and I arrived at Fort Fletcher yesterday. Upon hearing that aid was need in Mountain Lake, we volunteered to come and help.”

Kex is a young dwarf, more than a child, but not quite a teenager in human terms.

During the meal, Dougan happily reports that he too had his priestly powers increased. He can now cast Dispel Magic! Between Dougan and Grondar, the rest of the entranced dwarves are freed!

Mayor Arlos arrives and reports that all has been quiet during the day. He has with him a map of the mines where the Duergar are holed up in.

“The mines are not that large, so there are only so many places the Duergar can hide.”

Looking at the map, you see that there after going down the main entrance, there are large areas with many tunnels moving off of them. The mine tunnels either dead end or end up back at one of these two caverns. Close to the second of the two large caverns is the way to the lower mines and the ruins that were uncovered. There is only one tunnel leading to those. Taking the right hand passages will pretty much get you to the tunnel to the lower mines.

“Duergar are dangerous foes,” Mayor Arlos states. “I’ve battled their kind before. Much like the dark elves they live in the dank depths with, Duergar have innate magical powers. They can grow into giants and turn invisible at will! When entering their lair, always assume that there are Duergar present even if you can’t see them! They do have a weakness. Much like the dark elves, they cannot abide bright lights. We’ve gathered up torches and oil lamps to be used while cleaning out the mines. Are we ready go into the mines?”

Everyone’s healed and back to maximum hit points.

Mayor Arlos, Opal, and Lotha will be accompanying you into the depths like before. The town’s regular guards will remain behind to prevent any Duergar or drow for coming out into the town. Given the nature of the mines, you might want to split up into sub-groups.

Rat located 5000 gp, 117 sp, and 2788 cp among the giants belongings.

Rat wrote:“I’ll check out there sacks for loot!” Rat calls out joyfully.
The fight ends, and Master Finder Rat's mind is exactly where one would expect it to be: with the spoils. Grondar grins in amusement for a moment, then turns to leave with the others. He has more important things than loot to concern himself with right now.
Daraden wrote:"Thank ye kindly," Daraden says upon receiving the magical healing. The wound wasn't bad, but it is nice to not have it itch if it had healed normally.
"You're most welcome, Daraden. We'll all need to be fit and ready for tomorrow evening."

Once all of the injuries have been seen to, Grondar will indulge in a hearty meal and a beverage before heading to bed. There is much to do on the morrow, and he will need a good night's sleep after this long day.

I will be your liaison to the Revered Mother.”

Rising to perform his devotions, Grondar is joined by an older woman dressed as a priestess of Berronar. "My pleasure, good lady," Grondar replies, a bit flustered. Eventually, he begins to understand, as he had heard some mention of this during his training. "I will look forward to our talks."

Over breakfast, Grondar encounters Jenna Firehand. "It is good to see you as well. No troubles on the way up here? How are your religious studies going?"
Ziana wrote:“We meet again, Grondar,” Ziana says.

"And I, you. I know of your tragic ordeal, and am encouraged to see you moving forward with your life. Kax would be proud of you. There is much you can do to aid this community."

Turning to Kex, Grondar says, "Good to see you again, young man. I am glad you have come to help us."

After breakfast, Grondar and Dougan each cast Dispel Magic on the remaining entranced dwarves. They are all freed, which encourages everyone.
Mayor Arlos wrote:“Duergar are dangerous foes,” Mayor Arlos states.
Grondar can't help but wish they had a mage with them. Those light spells would be very useful in this situation. Then again, he has access to similar spells, but didn't know of the weakness until now. Guess the torches and lanterns will have to do.

Turning to Aria, Grondar says, "What's the plan, Aria?"
_________________________________________________________
Too bad Arlos didn't tell them about the duergar's weakness earlier. Hopefully Dougan took some Light spells.

I take it Denia is essentially an assistant to Berronar? Does Grondar know anything about her specifically? Was she a famous dwarven hero in ages past?

Daraden Stormbeard:

Daraden learns that Darkfang is allowed indoors in Mountain Lake. Turns out that wolves are very common pets in the area. Most families have one or two of them. Cave bears are also kept as pets, but there isn’t as many of those. While he has his fill, Senoia sets down next to Daraden.

"Yer lucky they are so accomidating and let your furry hide in here," Daraden tells his wolf as the pair of them find a place to sit. Darkfang merely responds with a few barks as if there would have been any other possibility. About this time Daraden finds Senoia joining them.

“You’re pretty handy with an axe,” Senoia notes. “And your wolf is quite the companion. I’m glad that you joined up with us.”

"Aye, well thank ye kindly," Daraden replies. "Yes, Darkfang is very faithful even if a bit agrumentative," he adds, chuckling. "I too am glad to have joined with all you, it has been quite the adventure so far! Very satisfying to remove more o' them unnatural giants from our lands."

Darkfang barks something, but Daraden ignores him, continuing on with the conversation with the dwarven warrioress, "I'd buy you a mug of ale, but it seems to be flowing freely this night."

Eventually Daraden will welcome some sleep, and sleep soundly he will. Upon awakening, he is ready to get underway. Knowing that the mines might require them to break up, he will see first what Aria has in mind. She hasn't led any of them astray so far, and Daraden will easily follow her direction once more.

Farian

Sitting by the fire his pipe within his mouth, Farian relaxes after a hard days slaughter as a female dwarf approaches him.
Elsewhere, Opal Kreigstrum approaches Farian. “Can I join you?” She asks tentatively. “I’ve never seen a woman warrior like Aria before! She’s amazing! Have you traveled with her long?”
Waking from his seclusion of his mind Farian takes a burning ember and relights his pipe taking in a large draft the smoke rising from his mouth and face. “If you wish to, makes no nevermind to me.” He says gruffly.

“Aye she is one of a kind, good lineage she has.” After a thought, “For a short time I have, I met her at for Fletcher if Im not mistaken. Agreed to be their scout for a time. And you? What is it that you want, fame? Glory? Faith?”
“Duergar are dangerous foes,” Mayor Arlos states. “I’ve battled their kind before. Much like the dark elves they live in the dank depths with, Duergar have innate magical powers. “Shame their breath can’t be seen. With this weather and all. He says off handedly. “Aye I’m ready when you are. Though Im willing to bet there be traps and plenty of company awaiting for us!”

Rat:

With the fighting over and the danger of being crushed by falling giants gone, Rat does what he does best. Find things! The giants’ gear is raided and many gold coins are found!

“The Master of Stealth would approve!” Rat says, invoking the name that particular halfling deity that he idolizes.

Rat drags the loot sack behind him as he returns to the inn. It seems that the dwarves are celebrating without him! There’s food to be had and the ale is overflowing! But first things first. Rat drags the sack up to Aria and reports his findings.

“Those giants had plenty of gold coins on them, a few silver and plenty of gold. Taking my standard finder’s fee, that leaves 4500 gold coins, 105 silver, and 2509 copper to be shared as you see fit.”

Once that business is done, Rat will eat heartily and down a few ales while warming his feet by the fire. That’s where he’ll eventually fall asleep.

Upon waking, Rat discovers that more dwarves have arrived. He’s beginning to feel out of place with all these dwarves around! A nice halfling lass or his former apprentice Kylie for company would be most welcomed right about now.

The morning meal is had and the dwarves have it in their mind to go into the mines in search of more trouble. Rat isn’t sure what he can do in this kind of battle, but he’ll have his sling at the ready and his feet ready to dash if need be!

Post by Aria Stonehand »

Aria:
Mayor Arlos wrote:“We’ll be ready when you wake, Lady Aria,” the mayor vows.
“That sounds good, Mayor. Your hospitality is welcomed by myself and my companions.”

After retrieving her throwing axe, Aria makes her way to the inn with the others. First she secures a room and cleans up a bit, and then comes down for a meal and some ale. She heartily joins in on the toasting, nearly smashing her mug into the others.

The next thing Aria knows, Rat is there dragging a sack behind him and reporting what he found.
Rat wrote:“Those giants had plenty of gold coins on them, a few silver and plenty of gold. Taking my standard finder’s fee, that leaves 4500 gold coins, 105 silver, and 2509 copper to be shared as you see fit.”
“That sounds fine,” Aria says, not really interested in the spoils of battle at this moment. Later she’ll realize that Rat took ten percent of the treasure off the top, but ultimately decides not to make an issue of it. The recovery of the dwarven lands and freeing its people are more important that treasure right now.

Aria is awakened from a deep slumber at the time she earlier appointed. She dresses in her still bloody battle gear and makes her way down for food and to plan the days activities.
The adventurers rise and discover that a hot meal awaits them. Not only that, but the dwarven relief that Aria requested arrived while you slept. Among the new arrivals is Jenna Firehand and she’s pleased to see that Grondar is well. She was concerned after hearing that there were giants involved.

Jenna tells Aria that yesterday, while the adventurers were in the mines, that reinforcements arrived at Fort Fletcher. There were more workers and some guards among them. Surprisingly, there was priestess and her son among them. Most of the new arrivals made the journey to Mountain Lake.
“This is good news, Jenna. The extra help is much needed and I’m sure this town will welcome the priestess.”

Aria will take the time to introduce herself to the new priestess and her son.
During the meal, Dougan happily reports that he too had his priestly powers increased. He can now cast Dispel Magic! Between Dougan and Grondar, the rest of the entranced dwarves are freed!
“Well done, the both of you. I’d have those spells at the ready for the future too. At some point we’re going to run into this Clavius and the Iron Orb. If we fall under its spell, the everything we’ve done here will be for naught.”

“All the more reason to not consider them to be true dwarves,” Aria mutters upon hearing that have innate magical powers. “Let them grow into giants, for all the good it will do them! We’ve taken down real giants, false ones won’t be much of a challenge!”

The fact that they can turn invisible is troubling.

“Aye, we’ll need plenty of light to put them at a disadvantage. But if I recall how that magic works, as soon as they attack or are attacked then they loose their advantage. So we must guard against surprise attacks. If were them I’d be guarding the ways that lead to this ruined fortress. That must be where the Iron Orb is now. We should take the tunnels that lead in that direction as indicated on the map. The first large cavern is probably where we’ll come across the most resistance at first. From there we’ll split up and take the paths towards the second large cavern and the tunnels to the ruins.”

Aria will suggest that our forces be divided as follows. “Oran, Mayor Arlos, and myself will head each sub group. Farian, Opal, and Rat are with me. Grondar, you, Salem, and Senoia go with Oran. Mayor Arlos will have Daraden, Lotha, and Dougan with him. That should give us roughly equal fighting strength. We’ll be one large group to start with and then we’ll split out as needed. If everyone is ready, let’s get going! They know we’re coming, so this will not be an easy battle.”

Aria will grab some extra torches to take with her to help light the way.

"Fortunately we have you and Rat to deal with all those traps."

Seeing that Aria has other things on her mind at the moment, Grondar speaks up. "Perhaps we should just find a place to set it aside until all this nasty business is over with."

Grondar will listen quietly as Aria lays out the battle plan. The need to split up into teams was obvious, and these teams are probably as good as any other.

As they prepare to head out, Grondar picks up a small stone somewhere. It takes but a few moments to cast Continual Light on it, after which he drops it in a pocket. He then readies TruthGiver and his shield, then nods his readiness.

I'm hoping Grondar still has one of his Dispel Magic spells left after freeing the new batch of dwarves. He may need it later.

Previous Day:

The dwarves are relaxing in the Inn after the defeat of the frost giant band.
Daradne wrote:"Aye, well thank ye kindly," Daraden replies. "Yes, Darkfang is very faithful even if a bit argumentative," he adds, chuckling. "I too am glad to have joined with all you, it has been quite the adventure so far! Very satisfying to remove more o' them unnatural giants from our lands."

Daraden wrote:Darkfang barks something, but Daraden ignores him, continuing on with the conversation with the dwarven warrioress, "I'd buy you a mug of ale, but it seems to be flowing freely this night."
“And good ale it is!” Senoia answers, regarding her own tankard. “The product of a fine craftsman! I could probably indulge all night, but then I’d not be in shape to cut down those half-breeds in the mines. That will have to wait until a later time!”

Farian wrote:"Aye she is one of a kind, good lineage she has." After a thought, "For a short time I have, I met her at for Fletcher if I’m not mistaken. Agreed to be their scout for a time. And you? What is it that you want, fame? Glory? Faith?"
“Is her family important?” Opal can’t help but wonder. “I’ve grown up here isolated here in Mountain Lake. After the others left, we were all alone with only a few wandering travelers for company. I wanted to help guard the community, to fight against our foes, but there were no other women in the guard. That just meant that I had to work harder than any one else to get what I wanted. And the Lady Aria comes along and I get to not only see a powerful woman warrior, but a leader too! It’s like she’s living all those things that I dreamed about. She’s remarkable!”

Next Morning:
Grondar wrote:Rising to perform his devotions, Grondar is joined by an older woman dressed as a priestess of Berronar. "My pleasure, good lady," Grondar replies, a bit flustered. Eventually, he begins to understand, as he had heard some mention of this during his training. "I will look forward to our talks."
“There is much to do in the weeks and months to come,” Denia continues. “A Priestess of Berronar will be arriving here soon to fill the void left by the followers of the Keeper of the Secrets under the Mountain. The locals are already favorable to Berronar and Moradin, so she will be accepted. She will need assistance in setting up a temple here in Mountain Lake. These are good people who just had a run of bad luck. I know you will do what is needed.”
Grondar wrote:Over breakfast, Grondar encounters Jenna Firehand. "It is good to see you as well. No troubles on the way up here? How are your religious studies going?"
“Good to see you, Revered Brother,” Jenna answers with a smile. “I think my studies are going well. The more I learn about Berronar, the more I realize that this is what I want. I may only be a Daughter of Berronar, but one day I will be a Revered Sister.”

Later Grondar meets up with Ziana Lavaflow, a Priestess of Berronar.
Grondar wrote:"And I, you. I know of your tragic ordeal, and am encouraged to see you moving forward with your life. Kax would be proud of you. There is much you can do to aid this community."
“I would like to think that he would approve too,” Ziana agrees. “And yes it does seem that these people need my help. By aiding them, perhaps I can heal myself in the process. I would like to start a temple here to replace the one that has been defiled. I know that you have tasks that demand your attention first, but when you are able I would welcome your assistance.”
Grondar wrote:Turning to Kex, Grondar says, "Good to see you again, young man. I am glad you have come to help us."
“Thank you, sir,” Kex replies politely.

Jenna also reports to Aria about the latest happenings back at Fort Fletcher.
Aria wrote:"This is good news, Jenna. The extra help is much needed and I'm sure this town will welcome the priestess."
“Oh, I nearly forgot,” Jenna adds as she reaches into her pocket. “There was a packet of messages for you, Lady Aria. Baluk instructed me to deliver it to you.”

Into the Mines:

After eating, the dwarves gather for a council of war. Mayor Arlos reveals what he knows about the duergar and their unnatural innate abilities. Seeing that there are multiple ways to reach your goal, Aria sets up sub-groups within the main group.
Aria wrote:Aria will suggest that our forces be divided as follows. "Oran, Mayor Arlos, and myself will head each sub group. Farian, Opal, and Rat are with me. Grondar, you, Salem, and Senoia go with Oran. Mayor Arlos will have Daraden, Lotha, and Dougan with him. That should give us roughly equal fighting strength. We'll be one large group to start with and then we'll split out as needed. If everyone is ready, let's get going! They know we're coming, so this will not be an easy battle."
Those looking her way will notice that Opal is nearly beaming with pride at the arrangement of the groups.

Before reaching the mines, Grondar casts Continual Light on a small stone. The stone glows brightly, illuminating the area of affect with bright light. It’s as bright as daylight is, and thus will be of great annoyance to those who dwell in the dark. The light radiates outwards sixty feet in all directions.

As you reach the mines, you see that the frost giant bodies were rounded up and a huge bon fire is burning the corpses. The smell is unpleasant, but it’s better than leaving rotting corpses laying around!

A dozen dwarves stand guard at the mine entrance. A defensive position has been established where the guards can safely keep their eyes on the mines. Crossbows are trained at the entrance. Ziana is here to offer you good fortunate and her healing powers should they be needed upon your return. Jenna keeps the priestess company.

The passages in the mine range from 5 to 8 feet in width. Ceilings are a uniform 8 feet high, except in natural caverns where they can vary. The main entrance to the first of the large natural caverns is wider, being almost twenty feet wide.

There are two side caverns near the main mine entrance. These were used for storage by the miners and the guards made sure that these were clear earlier.

The main entry slopes notably in places and by the time you reach the first cavern, you’re forty feet deeper in the earth than the mine entrance is. The main entrance tunnel is over two hundred feet long, so you’re also further back into the mountains. There are torch holders mounted in the walls of the main entrance. The duergar extinguished them when they took over. Old torches are replaced and all of them are lit to help illuminate the way.

The group reaches the entrance to the first large cavern. It is a naturally shaped cavern, that is somewhat shaped like a rectangle. There is a mine tunnel about thirty feet away to your left, but that leads off in a direction away from your goal. There is a second mine tunnel on the far side of the cavern, some seventy feet way, but again it’s going off in the wrong direction.

To your right there are two mine tunnels leading off in the proper direction as soon on the map you examined earlier. While both tunnels end at the second large natural cavern, the first opening takes a more roundabout path to it. Thus the second opening is more direct.

Looking around the cave, you can’t help but feel that the enemy is present. You just can’t see them.

GM Notes:

One Dispel Magic from each priest was required to free the rest of the villagers, so Grondar still has one available. The group is at the entry to the natural cavern and has yet to venture in.

How do you want to proceed from here?

“You can talk to him?” Senoia wonders, slightly surprised. “That’s amazing! Yes, it has been quite journey thus far. I am glad to be a part of something special like this. Our deeds will be passed down for generations.”

"So much as the furball can understand o'course," Daraden chuckles. "We be getting our points across pretty well."

Daraden thinks on the last part Senoia says, "Aye, that be true I believe. I wasn't really thinking along those lines, just rather that we free our kin from this hellish prison that was once their home."

“And good ale it is!” Senoia answers, regarding her own tankard. “The product of a fine craftsman! I could probably indulge all night, but then I’d not be in shape to cut down those half-breeds in the mines. That will have to wait until a later time!”

"Aye, indeed that will," Daraden comments.

The next day arrives and Daraden is more than ready to finish their task. He joins the others as we head to the mines. Defensive positions are in place, but Daraden is glad he isn't among them. They're going to be the ones who will be bored!

Darkfang yips at the smell of the burning corpses and Daraden can only agree. Still burning giants are better than decaying giants.

Staying near the mayor, Daraden enters the tunnels with the rest. He's not uncomfortable by any means, but he definitely prefers the outdoors to an extended stay underground. He's glad he wasn't destined to be a miner.

Looking around the cave, you can’t help but feel that the enemy is present. You just can’t see them.

"Der be eyes on us," Daraden comments softly. He keeps an eye on Darkfang to see if the wolf can pick up the enemy any better. If there are no clues from his wolf and no sudden ambushes, Daraden remains near the mayor and waits to see if Aria wants us to split up at this point.

These are good people who just had a run of bad luck. I know you will do what is needed.”
Grondar is pleased to hear that another of Berronar's representatives will be coming here to help rebuild this town. "Of course, I would be happy to assist the Revered Sister and this town in any way that I may. I have dedicated myself to seeing to the restoration of as many ancient dwarven communities throughout the land as possible."
Jenna wrote:“Good to see you, Revered Brother,” Jenna answers with a smile. “I think my studies are going well. The more I learn about Berronar, the more I realize that this is what I want. I may only be a Daughter of Berronar, but one day I will be a Revered Sister.”
"That is wonderful to hear, Jenna," Grondar replies with his usual craggy smile. "I have no doubt that you will one day reach your goal."
Ziana wrote:“I would like to think that he would approve too,” Ziana agrees. “And yes it does seem that these people need my help. By aiding them, perhaps I can heal myself in the process. I would like to start a temple here to replace the one that has been defiled. I know that you have tasks that demand your attention first, but when you are able I would welcome your assistance.”
It is not long before Grondar meets the priestess foretold to him by Denia, and it is someone he has met previously! "I was told of your coming by Denia Steelstrike, the Revered Mother's intermediary on this world. She asked me to help you, though I would gladly have provided my assistance even if she had not. There is much to do here, though I sure we can get this town back on its feet in no time. I believe your presence will be a boon to them, and they to you as well."

Eventually, it is time to go forth and drive the duergar from the mines. On the way, they are assaulted by the stench of the burning giant corpses. Grondar does his best to ignore the smell as they pass by. Shortly thereafter, they pass the guards who have been watching the mine entrance.

Passing the great doors at the entrance, the dwarven party descends into the tunnels beyond. Almost immediately they pass a pair of small storage caverns, but they are unoccupied.

Descending into the mountain, the group marches down through the long tunnel. Eventually, they reach an opening into a one of the large main caverns shown on the mine maps. Grondar has the eerie sensation that they are being watched.

Reaching into his belt, Grondar pulls out the brightly-glowing rock and holds it high with his shield hand. Hopefully, it will offset some of the duergar's advantages. Since they are all crowded closely together, Grondar will cast Bless on the group just as the surge out of the tunnel into the cavern. For the time being, he'll hold the more powerful spells in reserve.

“A wise suggestion, Grondar. Aye, material wealth can wait for now.”

Aria will ask the mayor if there is a save place we can store our spoils for now.
Jenna wrote:“Oh, I nearly forgot,” Jenna adds as she reaches into her pocket. “There was a packet of messages for you, Lady Aria. Baluk instructed me to deliver it to you.”
“Thank you, Jenna.” Aria regards the pack for a moment, but decides to save it for later. There are more pressing needs to be concerned with right now.

After the initial planning is finished, the group walks to the mines. Along the way they see that the fire giant bodies were rounded up into a huge pile and set ablaze. A fitting end for those monstrosities!

The group goes into the mines, lighting torches along the way to provide better illumination and more importantly to annoy the enemy. They reach the large natural cavern and cannot help be feel that they are being watched.

“Close ranks,” Aria calls out, just loud enough for those with her to hear. “Don’t let any of them get behind us! Lets light up this cave.”

Taking her torch, Aria tosses it deeper into the cave and encourages the others to do the same.

Looking to Grondar she adds, “Toss the stone into the cave ahead of us. It might rattle the enemy!”

Aria is content for now to force the enemy to attack us first. She doesn’t want to break ranks or open up a flank to a surprise attack.

Farian

Once the plan is set and agreeable, Farian makes himself ready to move out. Testing both his shield and war hammer he awaits the others. Soon they enter the cave and he can’t help but smell the burning bodies of the giants. His eyes flicker in the torch light here and there trying to discover where the dwarves might be. With a sudden thought, shame we didn’t bring flour.

Farian will do as instructed and throw his torch forward, but not before light another. Warhammer in one hand torch in other.
