Elfquest #23
Four pendants that seem to operate the tree portals have been found. But before they can be used, an unseen force attacks Sherwood. The ranger/mage picks himself up while most everyone else draws their weapons. Kylie casts Detect Invisibility while Laucian invokes Summon Insects. In Kylie’s eyes, she spots the outline of some type of creature hovering in the air. It’s barely there, even with the enchantment in use. To everyone else, it’s just a vaguely shimmering area in the air.
Kylie directs everyone in the creatures’ direction. A swarm of flying insects move in next, courtesy of Laucian. They swarm about the creature, biting it many times and help making the target more definable.
Range attacks quickly follow next. Kylie casts Magic Missiles and four of the enchanted bolts slam into the invisible creature. Laucian, Lia, and Valena follow suit with their bows. Both Laucian and Valena score a pair of hits with their shafts, while Lia is wide with her crossbow bolt. Nariya flings her spear, piercing the airborne apparition.
The creature seems to be badly injured now and it tries to flee. It gets too close to Sherwood and he strikes it with Lifeshield. After that strike, the creature dissipates as if it wasn’t really there. It vanishes and Kylie announces the area to be clear.
The cooshee’s settle down as well, although Lady seems to be searching for something that she can’t find. The cooshee is whimpering in concern.

Kylie:
A vicious barrage of spells and weapons following the spells locating the creature destroy the air elemental - for so Kylie assumes it to be. Fortunately, it served as little more than a distraction, as it did not significantly harm any of them.
"Thank goodness," Kylie murmurs as the creature dissipates. She looks around at the others, finding that they all appear to be well. "All clear," she calls out, not seeing any other threats with her enchanted sight."
"I think we should proceed quickly. No sense allowing Moorkroft to sit back and throw more attacks at us out here." Her eyes fall on Dapple, and she moves over to pet the large cooshee for a moment.

The invisible foe has been defeated, but now there is concern for Lilia. Lady acts as if she looking for something. Valena speaks to the worried cooshee.
Valena relays Lady’s concern. “She says that Lilia is gone. She thinks that she passed through the portal right before the attack began!”

Nariya will see if her spear is retrievable since the creature vanished. If it isn't, she will arm herself with another.
The spear can be recovered, as can the arrows fired at it. They simply dropped to the deck when the creature was dispelled.

As the air elemental dies and moves no more, Laucian disperses the swarm to their lives, thanking Ehlonna for her blessings.

“We have to find her!” is all she can manage clearly frustrated upon hearing of her disappearance. “There is no telling to what Moorkroft will do. Unless he means to barter for the medallions…”

Picking up her spear, Nariya is alerted that Lilia seems to be missing. "That doesn't sound like something she would do on her own," she comments. "Unless she was tricked or grabbed."
Nariya stands ready to pursue after their missing companion, remaining alert until a decision is made.

Spread out amongst them and do get too close to each other just in case we come under spell attack. Laucian, take the rear guard, to ensure no one tries to flank us. Let’s move! Seeing that Kylie is upset, Talen will say, “We’ll find your friend. I promise.”
Orders are given to advance through the portal. It might be a trap, but then again we have no other path to take. Talen draws his bastard sword and has it ready. He follows the cooshee’s through the portal and tries to keep pace with them.

Sherwood orders them to proceed quickly through the portal. Valena takes charge of the cooshies, and they start forward. Kylie takes a position somewhat near the back of the group. Since her Fly spell is still active, she intends to float up over the group soon as the opportunity is available.

Lilia is missing and evidence seems to suggest that she’s passed through the tree portal. Lady, the cooshee closest to Lilia, wants to go that way. Sherwood agrees and the group prepares to pass through the portal.
Valena and Lady lead the way. The rest of the cooshee’s follow with the adventurer’s spread out among them. Laucian brings up the rear.
The sensation of passing through the portal isn’t much different then being magically teleported. You step through and are in a new area of the palace. This section is circular in shape, with the arrival portal along the outside edge. You’re on the top level of this section. A wide walkway moves off to your left and right. On the other side of the walkway are small buildings with open doors. A passage goes between the buildings and leads towards the middle of this section.
Lady wants to go straight and the cooshee runs off in that direction. Valena gives chase with several other cooshee’s following.
After a short run down the passageway between buildings, you arrive at the middle of this section of the palace. The inside is much like the outside. A wide walkway circles around the center with a forty-foot wide section to it open allowing you to see down below. A railing is erected here for safety. There are more buildings along the outside of the walkway. They suggest guest quarters to the elves.
Lady reaches the railing around the open center of the level. Looking down Valena can see the lower levels of this section of the Elfin Palace. They too have the center open with protective railings. Stairs are noted going down to the lower levels near the center.
But Valena notices movement in the center and Lady begins to bark!
As the others begin to catch up, they see a large reptilian head rising up from the opening in the center! The reptile is emerald green in color. Given the size of its head, it must be huge! More it’s body follows and the reptile rises up on beating wings. It’s easily 70’ long with a tail that’s nearly 60’ long!
There is only one thing that it can be: a green dragon! An unnatural fear grips each of you, but you are able to resist it.
The dragon looks eyes with the new arrivals and says, “Pleased to have you for dinner.”

“Grandmother never warned us about this!” she cries out as she sees the Green Dragon rear its ugly head as the fear of it grips her. Shaking the feeling from her head she draws her longsword. “You will not feed this day, Come lizard feel my blade!”As the others begin to catch up, they see a large reptilian head rising up from the opening in the center! Having fought a Dragon before Laucian calls out to the others, “Spread out! Don’t give him an easy target!” Hoping to give the others time to move, Laucian will fire two Fire arrows into the beast.
The dragon looks eyes with the new arrivals and says, “Pleased to have you for dinner.”But Valena notices movement in the center and Lady begins to bark!

Rising above the rest of the group, Kylie sees the giant green head rising through the center opening. Fear floods through her at the sight of the creature. A green dragon! They knew Moorkroft would have guards, but this...
From what she has heard, dragons tend to be resistant to magic, so Kylie resorts to a different tactic. Uttering a quick spell, she fires a brace of Iron Spikes at the beast.

Actually that was Grondar who was present at the battle against Ember. Although Kylie was there with the Ice Dragon construct was fought.Fortunately, Laucian reminds Kylie that she has faced a dragon before and survived.

“By the Lady of the Forests!” Valena cries out upon seeing the green dragon rise up.
As part of her priestess training, Valena learned about green dragons as they favored the same places as the faithful of Ehlonna. They were described to her as huge and evil monsters more than willing to destroy the good creatures of the forest for their amusement. But even those descriptions didn’t prepare Valena for just how HUGE it was!
Since she has her bow in hand, Valena will fire one arrow since she’s so close to the dragon. Then she’ll run for cover, urging Lady and the other cooshee’s to move away.
“By the Lady of the Forests!” Valena cries out upon seeing the green dragon rise up.
As part of her priestess training, Valena learned about green dragons as they favored the same places as the faithful of Ehlonna. They were described to her as huge and evil monsters more than willing to destroy the good creatures of the forest for their amusement. But even those descriptions didn’t prepare Valena for just how HUGE it was!
Since she has her bow in hand, Valena will fire one arrow since she’s so close to the dragon. Then she’ll run for cover, urging Lady and the other cooshee’s to move away.

There is only one thing that it can be: a green dragon! An unnatural fear grips each of you, but you are able to resist it.
The dragon looks eyes with the new arrivals and says, “Pleased to have you for dinner.”
Nariya pauses, partially from fear, partially from awe. What a sight! Speechless, she drops her spear and takes a step back as she tries to recompose herself. Talen runs past in obvious fear and she can't help but wonder if that isn't the smartest choice.
The others begin rallying and Nariya reaches for her bow. The dragon's hide is probably going to be quite tough, so she hopes the enchantment will help. She will use fire arrows first to see if they have any effect. If not, she will switch to ice.

The explorers have entered into what appears to be a guest area of the Elfin Palace in their pursuit of the missing Lilia. The area is donut shaped, with the middle open. Rising up out of the middle area is a huge green dragon!
Lia casts Bless, and the groups is given the blessing of Eilistraee. Laucian quickly fires a pair of Fire Arrows. These reddish shafts burst into flames upon impact doing additional damage to the target.
Kylie casts Iron Spikes and four spikes rip into the dragon. Sherwood follows up with a Lightning Bolt that tears into the dragon’s neck. While that is going on, Talen turns tail and runs!

Valena and Lia are inside the area and both begin to choke on the poisonous gas! Each woman falls to the deck and those cooshee’s closest to her drop as well.
The dragon then regards the rest of the group as a hungry man would a table full of food…

Perhaps a Wall of Ice dropped on it from above will give them a chance to prepare. Unfortunately, she has no spells that would help with an illusion.

A foul smelling gases evelopes her as her lungs slowly begint o burn causing her to drop to her knees. Choking hard she lets slip her grip upon her sword as she grips at her neck hacking and coughing. Realizing she lost the grip upon her sword she reaches out for it but finds her body not respond as haziness takes over her vision, falling into darkness.The dragon seems to shrug off the damage done to it those far. It bellows loudly and swishes its huge tail behind it. The dragon opens it’s maw and breathes! A cloud of foul smelling gas issues forth covering a large area.

We need you now then ever! Your sister is prone and lifeless We get to her."
Laucian will move forward and grab a hold of Valena pulling her back to relative safety and see if Ehlonna’s blessings can tend to her in her time of need.

While the dragon bellows, Laucian and Nariya rush to the side of their comrades. Laucian picks up Valena, while Nariya retrieves Lia.
Meanwhile Talen is fully consumed by dragon fear runs away and cannot be called back.
Sherwood casts Dispel Magic and, as if by magic, the dragon vanishes! It really was just a powerful illusion.
Nariya and Laucian discover that Lia and Valena are just unconscious. The downed cooshee’s are likewise asleep. Everyone can be revived by the usual methods.
The fear gripping Talen fades as well, and he sheepishly rejoins the group.
While recovering from this unexpected encounter, those with sharp hearing will hear noise from one of the nearby guesthouses. To the trained ear, it sounds as if there is a pony or other creature with hoofs close by, hiding in one of the buildings.

Looking around, Sherwood can see Laucian and Nariya move toward the downed women. Nariya helps Lia come around, while Laucian does the same for Valena. Kylie flies off to retrieve Talen.

Then there is light and Valena becomes aware once more. She’s laying on her back and Laucian is hunched over her.
“What happened?” Valena asks in a confused voice. “What’s going on.”

Held tightly in the grip of the fear he is feeling, Talen cannot hear the words directed towards him. Instead he runs and when realizing that there is nowhere to run further too, Talen ducks into one of the huts and hides in there.
While he hides, Talen hears movement outside. Someone is talking, but he can’t understand them.
And then all at once, the fear is gone. Talen quits shivering and realizes that he’s curled up in a ball on the floor. He realizes that Kylie is standing over him. An embarrassed look comes over his face.
“I don’t know why I did that…”, Talen offers weakly.

Looking over Valena and Lia, he notices the slight raise and lower of their chests. “Odd.” He says looking them over then placing a hand to their neck and a ear to their chest in turn. “There is nothing wrong with them, If I didn’t know better I’d say they were asleep!” looking up at Nariya
Shaking Valena’s arm gently to wake her up.
Then there is light and Valena becomes aware once more. She’s laying on her back and Laucian is hunched over her.

"Come, help me check on the cooshees. Okay?" Kylie flies over and begins checking on the canines, paying particular attention to Dapple. Hopefully, she and Talen will be able to wake them all.

Looking down, Kylie sees Talen return and she smiles. "Dragon fear. A perfectly normal reaction, Talen. Don't fret about it.Talen wrote:“I don’t know why I did that…”, Talen offers weakly.
