Eternal Vigilance #71 - "Doubling Up"
Interlude:
The Mulitiverse is large and vast, existing on a scale almost beyond imagination. Many dimensions are similar to the others, with sometimes only a small difference between the two. Let's look in on these other dimensions to see how the Reality War is affecting them…
In chamber that only exists beyond space and time, a game is in progress. The pieces that they move on the game board are in reality living beings. The stakes of their contest is the domination of time and space itself!
The man in the white robes is simply called Tesseract. It is his duty to protect the integrity of time and space for those dimensions under his watch.
Today his opponent is himself, or rather a man who looks exactly like him, but dressed in a black robe instead. It was his urging that lead to this contest for reality.
Thus far the White Tesseract has yet to make a move. But now this changes. He reaches out onto the board, placing a figure of a gold skinned man in red and black on it.
"What are you doing?" The Black Tesseract wonders aloud. He had not foreseen this! "You're merging the dimensions further! Why?"
"You'll see," the White Tesseract answers, allowing himself a small smile. He glanced to his right and there a pair of similarly dressed women came into view. They were playing their own game. The woman in white looked to him and nodded in greeting. The woman in black was as startled by this as her male counterpart was.
Their strategy to defeat their opposite numbers was coming along nicely...

Roll Call: Whirl-I-Gig (3) vs. Ice Queen (4), Star Emperor (4), Sun Prince (4), & Live Wire (4)
Deep in the core of the Infinity Trading Company, their trans-dimensional portal is working overdrive, forcing eleven other dimensions to intersect with this one. Whirl-I-Gig had a front row seat for all of this and now finds himself in conflict with the architects of this disaster. Up in the control booth, Whirl closes in on the Star Emperor.
"Take him out!" Star Emperor yells as he attempts to regain his balance.
Down below in the core, three costumed beings observe this with mixed emotions. Live Wire hangs in the air, electricity playing about his body with Sun Prince not too far away. Ice Queen is on the floor, but generates an ice slide to move higher up in the chamber. Ice Queen slides into the control area and coats the floor with ice just behind Teeter and Star Emperor. Outside the booth, Live Wire waits for a clear shot.
There is a sudden flash back down in the core of the chamber that attracts everyone’s attention. There, a lone man in red and gold with glistening sparkles surrounding his body appears. Beside him is a machine of some kind. He presses a button and ghostly images of others close to everyone in the chamber appears. They become more and more solid as yet another dimension is merged into this one…

The attack clearly affects the Star Emperor, causing him to loose his balance and nearly stumble. The sparkly-man is not happy! He takes a drunken swing at Whirl, but moves nothing but air.Whirl-I-Gig wrote:"wellwhydontyouplaywiththisforawhile!" Whirl says and rushes back up to the Star Emperor and hits him with his topsy-turvy power. Whirl just wanted to see the cool show and the man had to start mocking him. How rude!

In Downtown San Diego, the main group of the Vigilant was en route back to the Star Building when they were attacked by unknown yet vaguely familiar beings. Water suddenly materialized around Changeling, in the form of Starlord, and his passenger, the enigmatic Eldritch. The water swirls about them, trying to force its way into their lungs. This was a concern for Liam at first, until he realized that he no longer needed to breath in his current form.
Eldritch, however, wasn't as fortunate. As the water began to fill her lungs, she mentally activates the power of her amulet, generating a protective force field. The expanding field pushes the water away, while at the same time protecting both Eldritch and Changeling.
While Eldritch catches her breath, Changeling searches for the source of the attack. He quickly realizes that the water itself is the attacker! The water continues to flow around the outer edge of the force wall and even cries out, "Why won't you die!?" in a strangely familiar voice.
An unseen attacker assaulted the brutish Bombshell, causing the hulking woman to plummet to the ground creating a large impact crater. However, the Bombshell just shrugged off the crash like it was nothing. She looks around wildly, trying to find his attacker.
Overhead, Flow was also attacked and orders the Vigilant to pair off and fight back. White Out generates an ice slide away from Flow, taking Sea Queen with her.
As the pair slide closer, they see something strike Bombshell again, uprooting the she-beast and sending her flying once more. Still no sign of an attacker! Bombshell isn't hurt, but boy is she getting mad!
Not far away, the rest of the group closed in on Black Pearl, the Gem clone. Lightning Rod soars in and hits Black Pearl with an electrical blast, knocking her back a few feet. Black Pearl retaliates with her own blackish blast of magical energy. Lightning Rod is struck and it's his turn to go flying backwards across the sky
Gem weakly flies from Flow's hand freeing the giant-size heroine from the burden of her passengers. It's clear that Gem hasn't yet recovered from having her magical jewel forcibly removed by Morjak.
Once Gem is clear, Flow turns her full attention to Black Pearl. Reaching out, the giant-size heroine smacks Black Pearl, driving her from the sky! It's now Black Pearl's turn to make an impact crater on the street below!
Amazingly, Black Pearl pulls herself up and is looking to fight back! The Purple Phlox lands a close distance away and points his Crystal Headed Staff at the doppelganger. An energy discharge is fired from the staff, catching Black Pearl in the forehead! The villainess staggers for a moment, crying out in pain from the attack. Remarkably, she's still moving! Dark black energy gathers about Black Pearl's jewel as she prepares to fight back!

In Downtown San Diego, the main group of the Vigilant was en route back to the Star Building when they were attacked by unknown yet vaguely familiar beings. Water suddenly materialized around Changeling, in the form of Starlord, and his passenger, the enigmatic Eldritch. The water swirls about them, trying to force its way into their lungs. "Very well, actually," Sea Queen answers as she holds on to White Out. She doesn't seem affected by the cold White Out generates.White Out wrote:"Hope you can surf, Queen." She says just as se jumps off Flow's hand, As she does so she gestures before her causing an Ice slide for her to move about on anchoring it on a nearby building she will move toward Bomby.

Elsewhere, on a downtown roof, Midnight and Mauve have their own troubles. Two strangely familiar, but yet twisted beings attack! Mauve redirected Recoil's leap, causing herm to smash through the roof and disappear into the building below, evening the odds somewhat.
Twister continues to spin about the roof like a fast moving human top. He's on Mauve before the mauve-clad man or Midnight can do anything. He spins about rapidly, raining down punches on Mauve! He hits the roof hard and tumbles to a stop and is dazed.

Roll Call: Ricochet (3) & Sunboy (3) vs. Dark Angel (4) & Carnivore (4)
And at the Starr Building, the interior of the building is unaffected by the shifting of dimensions. The sudden surge of dimensional energy has changed Glen Star into Sunboy, much to his surprise and confusion. Dr. Morgan Williams tries to explain what is going on while a pair of invaders close in on their location. Ricochet moves off to fight the intruders.
While Ricochet confronts Dark Angel, someone who looks very much like Starlord, but in different colors attacks! A force field in the door to the clinic blocks the attack for now.
Further out in the hallway, Ricochet changes course intent upon attacking the Starlord copy. However, Dark Angel is faster. The patch of darkness reaches Ricochet and envelops her. Strong arms latch on to Ricochet and the two beings to grapple.
At the doorway, the force field is growing weaker under the relentless pounding. It'll fail in a matter of moments!
"The field isn't going to hold!" Dr. Williams calls out. "Glen, you have to use your powers! Most things wrapped up in darkness don't like the light. You need to generate a burst of light to drive it away! Ricochet isn't going to last long taking on two of them at one time! It's up to you now. You can do this!"

"This isn't really the time for this conversation," Dr. Williams suggest as he watches the Starlord clone pound on the force field and the doorway containing it.Dark Liam wrote:"No! You will not cheat me of this kill, machine!" Ignoring the ignorant questions of the boy inside, Dark Liam switches to full Neutron power (density) and begins attacking both the barrier and the doorjamb. Hopefully, his full power will overwhelm either the force field or the wall next to it.

Elsewhere, at what must be the most evil place in San Diego given how many bad things happen there, a trio of beings not of this dimension is gathered at Horton's Plaza. While this is Horton's Plaza is one from another dimension, a dimension where the extra-dimensional horrors known as the Anopheles hold sway.
Serena, the human daughter of Tyrannon, has just told her brother that their father has been overthrown and that a Serena from an alternate dimension now holds sway there. Serena wears her accustomed chain mail armor and bears a large sword.
As Serena speaks, another rises up to their level in Horton's Plaza. The stranger eyes the two with his mystic senses. Both are powerful, but the male is the stronger of the two.
"Yes?" Serena questions of the stranger. "What do you wish of us?"

Back in the ‘real’ world, the struggle inside the core of Infinity Exports continues. Tilt-A-Whirl has just Topsy-Turvied Darkstar, causing her to act as if she was drunk. Her companions come gunning for Tilt! Black Ice coats the floor with his namesake, but Tilt rushes up the walls to avoid it. She dashes across the observation booth towards the exit door.
Stargirl flies in closer and fires a blast of lethal radiation. Tilt-A-Whirl ducks out the door and the blast harmlessly passes her. Tesla sends an electrical blast that same way, but it too misses the fast moving heroine. Black Ice reaches up, intent of grasping a waterline, but Tilt is already gone.

In the observation deck, an ice-coated female appears close to Black Ice, while a man dressed in an outfit similar to that of Darkstar appears beside her. He also seems to be woozy.
Out in the hallway, Tilt-A-Whirl is surprised to find a boy dressed similar to her run along side her!
And back down in the core, a man dressed in a similar theme to Goldstar appears. There is a second machine beside him and that machine merges with the first, increasing the size of both.
“Good to meet you, Starlord,” Goldstar says to her male counterpart.
“Likewise, Goldstar. I’m sure that this will get everyone’s attention.”

In the streets of Downtown San Diego, we find the main group of Vigilant and their allies trying to make their way back to the Starr Building. A roadblock in the form of a trio of beings that seem very similar arises!
The living water that surrounds Eldrich and Menagerie continues to try and find a way through the force wall protecting them. Eldrich conjures an eldritch bolt and it strikes the water. Menagerie, in the form of Goldstar, follows up with a Photon Blast. The water is staggered between the two attacks, and begins to fall away. As it does so, the water begins to coalesce into a vague man-like form.
The air near Menagerie and Eldrich ripples inexplicably and suddenly a second pair of beings appears! It is a man who looks an awful lot like a male version of Goldstar carrying a female copy of Eldrich. Down below them, a second falling body of water appears. This one is female in shape.
Down on the ground, the Gargoyle has been attacked twice by a foe that he cannot see. Holding back his rage, he closes his eyes and concentrates. The man-brute’s senses reach out, trying to find something…
There! Gargoyle reaches out with his hand and plucks something right out of the air before his face. Opening his eyes, Gargoyle can see a tiny man in the palm of his hand!
While that is going on, Frostbite and Sea Guard come sliding up. Frostbite gestures and a white out settles in over the area blinding and deafening everyone in the area.
“That may not have been necessary,” Sea Guard yells out over the storm. “I think the brute found his attacker!”
Suddenly the storm seems to grow fiercer. Not only that, but others who were not there a moment ago now appears! Next to Frostbite and Sea Guard are female versions of themselves, while a female Gargoyle grapples with a tiny woman in the palm of her hand.
Not far away, a mighty swat from Flux has sent Powerstone to the pavement. But the Powershift clone isn’t down for the count yet. Energy from the reddish jewel in his chest throbs with power!
Tesla flies back in and an electrical cage settles in over Powerstone. The energy gathered around Powerstone is unleashed, and the electrical cage is blown away.
Flux looks skyward and sees the watery being attacking Menagerie and Eldrich blasted away. As the water falls, it begins to take on a man-like shape. And then there are two shapes, the second one female.
A scream from Powerstone forces Flux to look back down. There, he sees the Purple Flux unleashing another blast from her Crystal Headed Staff. The energy drives Powerstone to his knees.
And then the pitch of the scream changes! A second stream of energy is being fired from a second Crystal Headed Staff, this one wielded by a male Purple Phlox! The second stream is striking a woman with a black gem lodged in her chest!
Then Flux becomes aware of a giant-sized woman standing next to him. She seems just as surprised to see him, as he is to see her. An electrically charged man appears in the sky beside Tesla, while a second woman bearing a gem in her chest materializes close to Powershift. She seems just as dazed as Powershift.

Then Flux becomes aware of a giant-sized woman standing next to him. She seems just as surprised to see him, as he is to see her. An electrically charged man appears in the sky beside Tesla, while a second woman bearing a gem in her chest materializes close to Powershift. She seems just as dazed as Powershift.

Just outside the door, someone who looks very much like Goldstar, but in all the wrong colors is pounding on the force field in the doorjamb trying to get in. Further down the hallway Backlash is grappling with what appears to be a cloud of darkness. Dr. Mary Beth Williams watches in concern.
The power gathers in Gloria’s hands and right before she unleashes it a second being appears in the doorway. This one is a man, but he also looks like Goldstar! Further back, a woman dressed like Backlash grapples with a cloud of darkness! Even more surprising, a boy dressed in a costume much like Gloria’s appears beside her. Together we unleash something called a Solar Flare and it drives the dark beings away.
“All right!” Gloria celebrates for a moment.
“Who are you supposed to be?” She asks of the boy standing next to her.
Then the force field gives way and now there are two evil Goldstar’s in front of her!
“I hope you know what you’re doing,” Gloria tells the boy, “because I sure don’t!”
Gloria stands there, unsure what to do next.

But that’s not all, as boy wearing my costume is hovering beside me! There’s even a male Tesla, a female Black Ice, and another man who is dressed as mom!
“What the hell is going on here?!”
Whoever these Darkstar clones are, they can’t be on our side! Stargirl will fly down to the two Darkstar’s in the wrong colors and hit them with a Radiation Blast!
“AUGH!” Stargirl screams as her attack is off the mark. That little speed demon is fast!
Then a woman who looks very much like mother, but in different colors, appears down in the core. She has some kind of machine. It’s activated and then a male version of her appears! “Aw, what a sweet way to wake up,” Lavender mumbles. Her body still hurts, but the injuries will be repaired in time.
Then she becomes aware of yet more people in the area. She can tell that none of them really belong in this dimension. But these new arrivals seem to be us, just with their genders different!
“None of these people are from this dimension!” Lavender tells Blackout. “But that guy in mauve is gorgeous!”
Lavender stirs and finds herself being carried in Blackout’s arms.

The Hand of the Guardian enters into Earth Orbit. The dimensional stabilizer is ready and both it and Goldstar are teleported down to the core of Infinity Exports. This place is the heart of the overlapping dimensions and the stabilizer will put them even further into synch. It’s good to be home, but no time for reunions just yet.
The teleport effect fades and Goldstar finds herself in the core. The stabilizer is activated and two more dimensions are merged into this one. Starlord, the male version of Goldstar in the other dimension appears. He just performed the same task in his own dimension.
“Good to meet you, Starlord,” Goldstar says to her male counterpart.
Our arrival as not gone unnoticed. A girl who looks very much like my daughter flies in. Strangely enough, the colors of her costume are all wrong.
Goldstar is prepared to defender herself should the evil versions of her child attack.

The water is struck by twin attacks, falters, and begins to fall, coalescing into a humanoid shape.
The ripple of air signals the arrival of yet more people to the fray!
Eldrich espies Eldritch and the two lock gazes as both their Amulets begin to hum in concert, the feedback causing the memory curse to recede somewhat for both of them.
Amulets with identical personal Glyphs! We could cause mutual activation with an unguarded thought!
Eldrich marshals his discipline, diverting his attention away from the Other who looks like a resident of his home realm and back to the matters at hand.
These new people, they are ALL like us, except in gender. Can this mean yet another influx of reality has occurred?? If so by whose hand?

The gray man's eyes close as Flex drifts up small and silent-then suddenly his hand snaps out grabbing Flex!
. . he wants me! I don't believe it! Can this get any worse?
That answer comes immediately when the cold snowstorm drops down blocking out sight and sound.
Ok , NOW we're at bottom, right?
The storm promptly doubles in intensity and a second hulking brute appears beside the first, female this time but no prize.
Uh huh, uh huh, that's it I'm outta here! The two puglies can MATE for all I care.

That answer comes immediately when the cold snowstorm drops down blocking out sight and sound.

The storm promptly doubles in intensity and a second hulking brute appears beside the first, female this time but no prize.
Uh huh, uh huh, that's it I'm outta here! The two puglies can MATE for all I care.

As the snow doubles in strength, ReFlex sees a second form dimly appear close to the first. It's hard to believe but a second lump of brainless muscle, male this time, is now present.
That's it, I'm done. Time to rethink this whole setup. The Boss relied too much on Black Pearl. Must be sure to mention it at the next meeting.

Someone has been very careless with their majikal power. And this is the result:Anopheles everywhere. I doubt there is anything here worth my time. Best to try one of the other majikal realms . . . but hold! I sense others of Power also not of this realm. Above me upon this edifice.
Turjon raises herself upwards, mindful of the danger of attracting attention in this contaminated realm but unable to resist the pull of curiosity and the potential acquisition of power.
The two strangers come into view and the mystic Sight reveals their power. Of the two the male is the greater but the woman is the one who speaks first.
"What do I wish of you? You were speaking of an overthrow, yes? Perhaps it is I who can aid you. For the right price of course. Are you open to negotiation?"
I sense an opportunity for advancement here. The only source of aggression more powerful than family hatreds are religious wars . . .and there is profit to be had in both.
Before any meaningful exchange can take place, reality bends and shifts, causing three others to appear. One is a woman exact in physical build to the woman in chain armor but clad all in black. The other male is obviously from her realm by the skin tone. His Clan glyph is even a parody of her own clans in reverse! How dare he!

Turjess had opened a dialog with the two beings of Power hoping for information and any signs of weakness. What he got was an unlooked-for reality shift and the addition of three MORE beings of Power!
Either fortune favors me greatly or ill luck is about to befall me. But who is this? A woman from my realm wearing MY House Rune with the major elements reversed! How bizarre! And it seems they mean to attack! Unfortunate as I have not yet firmed my alliance in any meaningful way. Still one must dance when the deamon piper plays. . .

Together they strike the barrier as one, the sheer power of the tandem blow shattering the wall of energy.
"You take the brutes over there, attacking my dark friend and his companion. I'll deal with the children."
Almost immediately, she flies across the room at full speed, hurtling directly toward the glowing youngsters. She intends to catch them both and slam them into the wall across the room if she can; if not, the girl will do for now.

Eldrich gives the water the mystic whammy, followed by her own Photon Blast. This appears to be to much for the amorphous attacker and it begins to fall away, coalescing into on a vaguely masculine shape.
Just then, gender-switched duplicates of herself and Eldrich appear in the air next to them. A similar humanoid glob of water is appears falling away from them as well, though it also appears to have suffered from the gender-switching effect.
"What-? Who-?" Lily stutters, trying to make sense of the scene as gender-bender doubles of pretty much everyone else present appear.
Giving up trying to make sense of what just happened, Menagerie opts to fire a second Photon Blast at the falling water-man-glob. Might as well make sure he's out of the fight. It will be easier to get answers once their opponents are unconscious.

Tilt runs up the wall, avoiding the ice-coated floor. That wouldn't have been fun to land on her butt at her speeds! Some more of the bad people shot at her, but she avoids everything. She's almost ready to start giggling when suddenly a boy appears right next to her, running as fast as she!
"whoareyou?!" they both say at the same time.
"imtiltawhirl!" Tilt replies.
"imwhirligig!" the boy says at the exact same time.
Chancing a glance back, both of them see that there are twice as many bad people too. It doesn't make a lot of sense to Tilt, but she has a plan! Looking over at her newest partner, she sees his mouth widen into a smile at the same time. sweet she thinks, he's just like me!
Without need for another word, they arc away from each other at super speed. They will weave inbetween their adversaries like a double figure 8, hoping to make them fire at each other since they can't possibly hit either of them!

Twisterella begins to spin rapidly in the opposite direction of the cord entwining her. The line loosens and Twisterella twists free.
"freeofthat!" Twisterella exclaims triumphantly. So easy to escape from that weak attempt by the hero - hey, where'd he go? "comebackhereandstopspoilingmyfun!" she calls out angrily.
A second mini-tornado appears close to Twisterella, this one is male and he too just freed himself form something that had been holding him.
Twisterella looks at the newcomer, who is staring right back at her, pairs of eyes finding each other through their spinning. "wellidontknowwhoyouarebutcomeonandenjoythefun!" she says.
It's suddenly a lot more crowded too. Lots of targets to choose from! Why be picky as she reaches down for more of her spikes. Stealing a glance at her near-double, she sees he has a handful of something pointy and wicked too! sweet! she thinks, he's just like me!
Together, Twisterella and Spinner will both keep spinning and throw more spikes into the battlefield, tearing up as many heroes as they can.

Blackout:
Unfortunately there also appears to be twice as many villains on the field now as well. Blackout will go full defensive and try to get Lavender someplace safe before he decides whether to re-enter the fray or not.
"I apologize for not being fast enough and putting you in harm's way," Blackout replies. He's about ready to leave the scene completely when it gets even stranger.But the maneuver bought Blackout the time he needed. With a small leap he crosses the roof and is beside the prone Lavender before Backlash can reach her. Blackout scoops her up and moves off. While he moves, Lavender begins to stir in his arms.
“Aw, what a sweet way to wake up,” Lavender mumbles. Her body still hurts, but the injuries will be repaired in time.
"I'm sure there will be time for introductions later," Blackout says simply. He's quickly losing track of who is who, but he stops and focuses on the one who is most like him to his senses, despite the fact she is female. It's a strange sort of bond that he can't explain.Blackout’s senses indicated that four beings just appeared on the rooftop, seemingly from out of nowhere. Close by stands a woman dressed in a costume much like his, next to a man in tight mauve clothing.
“None of these people are from this dimension!” Lavender tells Blackout. “But that guy in mauve is gorgeous!”
Unfortunately there also appears to be twice as many villains on the field now as well. Blackout will go full defensive and try to get Lavender someplace safe before he decides whether to re-enter the fray or not.

BlackOut isn't sure what is worse, being denied the meal that he was about to savor or being burned by that accursed light. He flees, trying to draw more darkness around him to protect himself. He is only vaguely aware of another just like him also fleeing the scene. He can not feed on that one, as she is too much like him, so for now, he ignores her.“SOLAR FLARE!”
Upon the utterance of those words by both the boy and the girl, a blast of light fills the hallway momentarily eliminating any shadows! The blast is anemia to both BlackOut and Dark Angel. Both flee backwards from the bright and agony inducing light. While both Backlash and Ricochet are freed from the grasp of their dark foes, both now have spots playing before their eyes.

Tesla:
Tesla flies back in and an electrical cage settles in over Powerstone. The energy gathered around Powerstone is unleashed, and the electrical cage is blown away.
"Still too powerful for that huh?" Tesla says, "I'll fix that in a second."
Suddenly it gets much more crowded with numerous copies of seemingly everyone appearing out of nowhere. Looking over at what could be her twin brother, Tesla asks aloud, "What is going on around here?"
He looks as confused as she, so Telsa returns to her target - Powerstone. He seems to have gained a new companion as well. "Alright then, we'll sort this out in a minute," she says, looking over at her twin.
Tesla fires an electrical blast at Powerstone before he can get any good ideas that he wants to try against her.
Tesla flies back in and an electrical cage settles in over Powerstone. The energy gathered around Powerstone is unleashed, and the electrical cage is blown away.

Suddenly it gets much more crowded with numerous copies of seemingly everyone appearing out of nowhere. Looking over at what could be her twin brother, Tesla asks aloud, "What is going on around here?"
He looks as confused as she, so Telsa returns to her target - Powerstone. He seems to have gained a new companion as well. "Alright then, we'll sort this out in a minute," she says, looking over at her twin.
Tesla fires an electrical blast at Powerstone before he can get any good ideas that he wants to try against her.

Stargirl flies in closer and fires a blast of lethal radiation. Tilt-A-Whirl ducks out the door and the blast harmlessly passes her. Tesla sends an electrical blast that same way, but it too misses the fast moving heroine. Black Ice reaches up, intent of grasping a waterline, but Tilt is already gone.
Tesla laughes even though she missed. She's having too much fun with all the destruction and mayhem going on to really care if they kill that speedster right now or not.

Reaching out with one hand, he extends his as well. Before their fingers can touch, electricity dances between each other's tips.
"Oh, wicked!" Tesla cackles, and turns her attention to the speedster, no, now two of them. "Double the pleasure!" she says.
She will remain close to her twin, letting the electricity jump between them as she lines up another shot into the young woman who has so far been very elusive.
