The Guardians have arrived in Ansimont virtually unnoticed. However, some of the locals have noticed them. A man calls out towards Lyonessa the name Myveria, thinking she to be her. (Myveria is the name of Lyonessa’s missing twin sister.) Realizing his error, the man turns and tries to disappear into the crowd.
Lyonessa wrote:"Wait," Lyonessa calls out as she turns her horse and heads towards the man. She looks over her shoulder to make sure someone sees her leaving the procession. It could be a trap, but she can't let the man slip away. Not yet.
"No wait, please," she calls out again, hoping to catch up to him. Lyonessa hopes to stay on horseback, but will dismount if she can't get through the crowd.
Lyonessa’s actions do not go unnoticed. Squire Moonshadow and Po both ride after the songstress. The man notes the pursuit, but does not run from it. Instead he turns to face Lyonessa as she rides up.
“I mistook you for someone else,” the man says glumly. “My apologies.”
While that is going on, Sherra noted a hooded figure watching the procession from the alleys. He follows the group as they ride through town. Right before leaving town and when the figure cannot see her, Sherra rides off circling back into town. She dismounts and stealthfully makes her way up behind the last known position of the figure. Sherra catches him watching the riders move out of town from behind an outlaying building. She’s nearly beside him before he realizes her presence.
When the stranger is aware of Sherra, he holds up an open hand towards her. Sherra does a double take when she sees that the hand is furry and ends in claws!
“Peace be with you, stranger,” the hooded man speaks calmly. “I mean you no harm. I only wished to warn you that you and your friends are all in danger here.”
Out at the Ansimont family farm, Charles Ansimont has been met. He goes to clean up while the Duke and Duchess are made ready. About fifteen minutes later, Charles returns cleaned up, but still plainly dressed, as one would expect a farmer to be. He invites the Duke and Duchess into the kitchen where they chat and enjoy warm drinks. The meeting is cordial and Charles easily accepts the new Duke to the lands. Talk turns to beefing up the military presence here in Ansimont and no resistance is met with.
Once the meeting is over with, the Duke and Duchess rejoin the procession and the ride back to town begins.
GM Notes:
There is a new sticky thread in this forum covering the cast of characters in this game. It’s very much a work in progress. Check it out and add your own input to the list.
Validar is not sure if it is paranoia or just a matter of being cautious, but he has a feeling of concern that he cannot quite place. The town and surrounding area seem normal and unthreatening. Still he is on heightened alert and makes sure everyone else is as well.
The carriages and soldiers have stopped some distance away and are guarded by Sir Belfor as well as Validar's squires, Sara Ebonov and Flint Jordana, son of Sir Belfor. The baron rides some of the distance toward the carriages as well, just to be ready in case an attack comes. The Duchess is brought forward and with the Duke they enter the main house of Charles Ansimont.
Validar is on hand for the meeting, as is Sir Acerion. Sir Corley and the rest of the Guardians patrol the area outside the house. The meeting is cordial and somewhat brief.
As Wrasseldown was a part of Ansimont, before the devastation recently there, Validar will bring up the subject on how the town will be repopulated. The question is as much for the Duke as Charles. He will also use this example to stress the fact that a military presence is necessary here as well as other outlying areas of the barony.
Unfortunately, there is not much to gain immediately with alliances and support from Ansimont. In truth, the barony will need much. The big advantage is that the food grown here will continue to feed much of the Kingdom. Validar will leave open a future meeting to solidify a formal alliance between Pyris and Ansimont. In truth it is only a formality given their standing within the Duchy.
Validar will escort the Duchess back to the carriages and take an opportunity to see his lady, Gabriella. They exchange a brief hug and Validar will use their private code in introduction. The baron kisses Gabriella's hand and then assists the Duchess back into the carriage. From there, the group makes their way back towards town.
Validar will ask Argent as they prepare to depart, "Do you by chance have your Secure Shelter spell in memory? With Jallarzi departed from us, we could use it's protection for certain members of the party."
(Assumption mode here)
The procession meets up with Sherra outside of town and Validar calls a halt to the column before they reach the outskirts of town.
"If I know that look upon your face, you have something on your mind," Validar will say.
“Are you all right?” Ivy tentatively asks. “I am very sorry for what happened to you yesterday. Anyone could see just how attached to the child you were. When and if you are ever ready to have a child in your life, there are many wonderful kids at the orphanage. In fact, I know one that would suit your temperament perfectly. If you wish to talk about it, I’d be happy to listen.
"I'm as fine as I can be," Sherra says. "I feel worse at being dupped and putting us all at risk. It was quite the effective trap. Thank you for your words, Ivy. I'll definitely think it over. I never envisioned myself in such a role until I had 'rescued' him. It has stirred something inside me."
Before Sherra departs the group, she rides up next to Chareos and whispers to him, "We are being followed. I will catch up with you later. Do not alert the others less we tip our hand."
She will ride off before it turns into a lenghty discussion. Sherra knows she's taking a risk, which is why she told Chareos of her intentions, but she also desires to be stealthy on this.
Sherra's hands drop to her sheathed knives, but she does not draw any completely out. She knows there is a look of surprise on her face, but she goes with it. "We are in danger every minute of our lives," she says flatly. "What makes today any different?"
Depending on the hooded man's reply and intentions will determine her next actions...

“There are wisdom to your words,” the stranger chuckles. “Indeed, danger is all about us even when we do not realize it.”
The stranger reaches up to draws his hood back. His face is human-like, but he has a feline nose and sharper teeth than a normal person would. A fine coating of fur covers his face and his eyes are slitted. While doing this, what Sherra guesses to be a holy symbol hanging on a chain about his neck tumbles out. It shows what she guesses to be a waterfall plunging into a pool, but without any ripples being created. The symbol is not one that Sherra is familiar with.
“My name is Jacob, Jacob Deville. Yes, I am among those humans would call demon-touched. I was wild, nearly feral in my younger days, as I am both man and animal. But I have found my place in the world following the teachings of Eldath.”
While not a very common goddess in Cynalon, followers of Eldath are known to be pacifists. Eldath is best known as the Goddess of Peace.
“While I do not know the full extent of the danger here, Ansimont is being used to trap spellcasters for some unknown reason by others in my family. The laws here against mages are just a pretense, as many mages who come to Ansimont are never seen again. They are being taken for some foul purpose. One seems to have vanished just a few days ago.”
“Secondly, I know why you and your companions have come to Ansimont. It is my fear that my family will use whatever is happening here in town to eliminate the new Duke and Duchess. I suspect that key people in town are involved in this plot, whether willingly or unknowingly. Trust no one here.”
Validar wrote:Validar will ask Argent as they prepare to depart, "Do you by chance have your Secure Shelter spell in memory? With Jallarzi departed from us, we could use its protection for certain members of the party."
“No, I do not,” Argent answers. “I switched to all combat spells as you directed back in Pyris.”
After a moment’s thought, Argent will add, “I still do have a teleport spell available, though. While I could not teleport both your father and mother, I probably could transport your mother and another woman. I could take them to Jallarzi’s Estate. It’s bound to be safer than anything Ansimont has to offer.”

"While not a perfect solution, I think it wise to do as you suggest. I do not want you to depart just yet, as we may need your spells before this day is over. However, I would appreciate you taking the Duchess and Lady Gabriella on to the Sallavarian Estate. Something here has me bothered and I cannot place my finger on it."

Lyonessa stays mounted and notices a couple of the others are riding to catch up. She's glad she's not alone and also glad the adventurer stopped.
"Myveria is my sister," Lyonessa explains. "I've been looking for her. When did you last see her?"
There are a hundred things she could ask, but she'll try to be patient even though her heart and mind are racing. This is the first possible lead she's had for a while.

"Myveria is my sister," Lyonessa explains. "I've been looking for her. When did you last see her?"
“You’re Lyonessa?” The man responds. “Yes, how stupid of me not to realize that. I am Phelan, and I had been traveling with Myveria these last few weeks. We reached Ansimont a few days ago, but she seems to have vanished on me. I awoke one morning and she was gone. I’ve been scouring the town ever since trying to find her. She wouldn’t just up and leave me like that.”
“When I saw you, I thought you were her, but I realized my mistake when I got closer.”
GM Notes:
Lyonessa and Myveria are twins, but Lyonessa has stronger elfin features, while Myveria’s are more human-like.
I’ve also updated the Cast of Characters thread, adding a new page for the vile Deville family.

She will ride off before it turns into a lenghty discussion. Sherra knows she's taking a risk, which is why she told Chareos of her intentions, but she also desires to be stealthy on this.
Hearing the cantering of Sherra’s mount, Chareos turns his gaze to her as she whispers softly to him. Nodding and whispering, “Be careful.” As she moves off Chareos moves forward.
“I fear your gifts have left you this day, friend. Do you really think that the Baron’s betrothed would be on horseback and not in the carriage?” Argent gestures towards the carriage holding the Duchess and Lady Gabriella.
“But you are half right. I am the Lady Argent, an Invoker of no small power. My companion is Lord Chareos, a mage and swordsman of some skill.”
Hearing the words of the scout, Chareos glances his way as he is with Ivy and Argent. His eyes narrow slightly then relax as Argent sets the scout straight.
Chareos will turn his gaze and watch for any trouble that may arise.
“And you Ivy of Arzella,” he states with a bow of his head.
“I fear your gifts have left you this day, friend. Do you really think that the Baron’s betrothed would be on horseback and not in the carriage?” Argent gestures towards the carriage holding the Duchess and Lady Gabriella.
“Never was one for divination,” he said evenly. “I am afraid it comes and goes as the winds change,” he says with a half-hearted smirk. “One would never know. There are times when secrecy and trickery are needed. To hide one’s target in plain sight is a reasonable tactic; besides would you not want a loved one next to you when and if trouble arose?” he asks curiously.
“But you are half right. I am the Lady Argent, an Invoker of no small power. My companion is Lord Chareos, a mage and swordsman of some skill.”
“My apologizes, Milady. I meant no harm,” he said evenly as he looked to Lord Chareos. “I must warn you. Mages and sorcery are frowned upon here; best not to show youselves as such. Sometime ago a drunkard set a Fireball off within town, causing the loss of many buildings,” he explained easily.
Baron Validar wrote:"This place is lacking in many things one would expect for a town this size, Validar says, indicating the lack of a fortress, defenses or any military presence whatsoever.
“Hopefully our stay here will be a short one. There’s far more things of interest in Elcadan.”
Rek wrote:“Never was one for divination,” he said evenly. “I am afraid it comes and goes as the winds change,” he says with a half-hearted smirk. “One would never know. “That is a fair point,” Argent will concede. “But no, I am not betrothed to the Baron or anyone else at this time.”
Rek wrote:“My apologizes, Milady. I meant no harm,” he said evenly as he looked to Lord Chareos. “I must warn you. Mages and sorcery are frowned upon here; best not to show yourselves as such. “So we’ve been warned,” Argent easily answers. “Fear not, no sorcery will take place without reason. Wouldn’t want to anger a bunch of pitchfork-wielding farmers.”
Baron Validar wrote:"I see," Validar says. "I thought perhaps with Jallarzi having planned to depart that you might have taken to replace the availability of her Mansion spell with your own. I should have thought of it sooner, I suppose."
“That transpired after I had departed the meeting,” Argent answers. “I wasn’t aware of it until this morning. The power of the energies I unleashed yesterday did take its toll. Rest was needed as well as time to regain those magicks. Regardless of the reason, the reality is that I do not have the spell available.”
Baron Validar wrote:"While not a perfect solution, I think it wise to do as you suggest. I do not want you to depart just yet, as we may need your spells before this day is over. “As you wish. Perhaps set all three of us up in a room while once back in town and then I’ll use the spell to relocate us. If there is any threat here, they still may strike thinking the room to still be occupied. Perhaps it would appear better if I were to move into the carriage for the time being so as to make our pairing less suspicious?”
Baron Validar wrote:"We do not appear to be in a place which would welcome an attack or ambush, but considering all that has transpired of late, it is good to be on guard at all times," Validar says to his fellow knight. "We cannot be too careful with the importance of this journey."
“Indeed,” Sir Corley answers.
While readying ourselves for the ride back to town, Sir Corley will suggest to his friend, “I believe that we should secure a large common room for the Duke and that we stay with him this evening. I would further suggest two guards at all times. We may find sleep elusive on this night.”
"I see," Validar says. "I thought perhaps with Jallarzi having planned to depart that you might have taken to replace the availability of her Mansion spell with your own. I should have thought of it sooner, I suppose."

"Perhaps you were more tired than you realized," Validar responds, as Argent was present during the most part of Jallarzi's plan. "And unfortunately, I did not think of it until today either. Very well, we shall have to make do, but it may prove prudent to add it to your repertoire as soon as you are able. We do not know whether we will be accepted at any further point on our journey."

"That is a wise suggestion. I will have one of the squires lead your horse. Since you have been so drained from your magickal exersions, perhaps it would be better for you to retire to the carriage." Before he has Argent enter the carriage, Validar thinks for a moment. If somehow had tried to replace Argent, by having her join the Duchess, there could be danger involved. While she may be the least likely to be affected by magic, there is always the chance some item was cursed and planted on her. Serena would have likley noticed this before she left, so the odds are unlikely, but Validar does nto wish to risk the safety of his mother or betrothed. Validar has Chareos ask Argent their secret code word and also has Acerion nearby briefly. Validar will also have Lady Rachel join them in the carriage.
While readying ourselves for the ride back to town, Sir Corley will suggest to his friend, “I believe that we should secure a large common room for the Duke and that we stay with him this evening. I would further suggest two guards at all times. We may find sleep elusive on this night.”
"I see that my paranoia is rubbing off on you, my friend. I plan to keep Sir Acerion in constant close proximity to the Duke since his mere presence will interrupt any attempts to charm or corrupt the Duke or anyone else for that matter. A common room is a fine choice for our adventurers."
Validar will speak to Sir Acerion in private and ask him to take a guardian position near the Duke until they arrive in Elcadan at the least. "It is a tall favor, I am sure, but your purity is a safe shield against anything the Devilles can try to use short of brute force and we should be up to that task."
"Another Deville," Sherra says, palming a throwing knife into her hand. "What makes you think I'm going to believe you aren't actually out to kill me while I run off to tell everyone to be more paranoid?"
Sherra isn't familiar with Eldath, but given her last run in with a Deville, she knows he could easily be lying. A holy symbol means nothing to her without a cleric to confirm or deny it's true meaning.
“While I do not know the full extent of the danger here, Ansimont is being used to trap spellcasters for some unknown reason by others in my family. "So how do you know so much and yet seem to have no leash?" Sherra asks bluntly. "The way I understand it is you are either trying to sow seeds of deceit or looking for an opening to move up the demon hierarchy. If you have escaped or are truly benevolent, I doubt you would have such detailed information."
Sherra knows this could well be a trap. She keeps tabs on her surroundings without trying to be too obvious about it. She feels she can escape from any sprung trap, but only if she knows one's about. Meanwhile, she will see how this Deville responds.
“Do you remember what happened the last time we were here?” Ivy asks Acerion. Of course Ivy refers to what took place in the Amber Waves Inn where they first realized their attraction.
"How could I ever forget, my love?" Acerion responds with a smile. His eyes seem more brilliant as he recalls the event. "It was a time that changed my life so drastically for the better. A treasured memory I never wish to lose."
So far Acerion has not detected any evil in the midst of the peaceful town. Still the paladin knows better than to become lulled into a false sense of security. He remains quiet for most of the meeting and it is over quite quickly.
"That is a wise suggestion. I will have one of the squires lead your horse. Since you have been so drained from your magickal exersions, perhaps it would be better for you to retire to the carriage." Validar has Chareos ask Argent their secret code word and also has Acerion nearby briefly. Validar will also have Lady Rachel join them in the carriage.
Something is troubling Validar and so Acerion joins him as they gather at the carriage. Not knowing completely what is the matter, if anything, Acerion concentrates on everyone assembled to make sure no evil clings anywhere.
Validar will speak to Sir Acerion in private and ask him to take a guardian position near the Duke until they arrive in Elcadan at the least. "It is a tall favor, I am sure, but your purity is a safe shield against anything the Devilles can try to use short of brute force and we should be up to that task."
Clasping wrists with his friend, Acerion agrees to the task. "Nothing shall harm them, subtle or otherwise," he reassures Validar. "It will be an honor to ensure their safety for as long as it may be required."
He will find his squire Jocasta before taking up his new position and addresses her in relative privacy. "There is still the very real threat of danger here despite the illusion to the contrary," he warns. "I have a task that I must be vigilant in overseeing for the next while that will require a pause in my tutalage."
"I understand," Jocasta replies evenly.
"I need you to be alert and mobile during this time," the paladin continues, "but I require an important task of you beyond just this."
Jocasta does a fair job of keeping her face neutral, but is curious as to just what Acerion needs from her.
"Should it come to it, I need you to protect the spellcasters of our party," Acerion reveals. "They will need time to work their magics; be it spells that are defensive, offensive or otherwise. Can I trust that you will do whatever you are able to buy them the precious time they shall need?"
"Of course, Sir Acerion," Jocasta replies. "I shall."
"Good," Acerion says, smiling a bit before turning and taking up his position near the Duke.
Validar has Chareos ask Argent their secret code word and also has Acerion nearby briefly. Validar will also have Lady Rachel join them in the carriage.
“As you wish,” he says evenly as he seeks out Lady Argent, “Have I told you lately what a vision of beauty you are?” he says smiling as he meets her gaze. Soon after he will ask her for their code phrase.
On the outskirts of Ansimont, Sherra has met Jacob Deville, a tiefling with a feline appearance.
"Another Deville," Sherra says, palming a throwing knife into her hand. "What makes you think I'm going to believe you aren't actually out to kill me while I run off to tell everyone to be more paranoid?"
"You have no reason to trust me," Jacob answers. "I understand that. I only wish to help as best I can."
Sherra isn't familiar with Eldath, but given her last run in with a Deville, she knows he could easily be lying. A holy symbol means nothing to her without a cleric to confirm or deny its true meaning.
"Therein lies a tale," Jacob answers with a grin. He'll easily sit down on the ground, his legs folded and his back against a building.
"A long time ago, when I was younger and more feral, I was a regular combatant in the arena my family operates in Akorros. I battled any creature or being they put in front of me. In those days I did not care if I killed or maimed. So entranced I was with my bloodlust."
"This went on for many years, until the battles were no longer enjoyable. Instead, I grew tired of them and eventually repulsed by the whole thing. I fled Akorros and wandered for many years. By chance I came across a follower of Eldath and learned of their philosophy. It filled a void in my life and I became a servant of Eldath."
"I have had no contact with my family for many years now. But I know that most any trouble or conspiracy in this region tends to involve them in some manner, I assume that they are behind spellcasters disappearing in Ansimont. There were rumors about the new Duke coming here given by travelers. I knew that my family would not tolerate anyone replacing them in Elcadan, and so it seems reasonable that they would use whatever mechanism is in place here to remove the new duke too.”
“I realize that you have no reason to trust me. I only wished to warn you and that I have done. What you choose to do or believe is up to you. May peace be with you.”
Jacob puts his hood back up, rises to his feet and walks back into town, leaving Sherra alone. She can easily catch up to the Duke’s procession once more.
GM Notes:
Acerion does not note anyone evil in the party. Argent is clean as well.
Baron Validar wrote:"That is a wise suggestion. I will have one of the squires lead your horse. Since you have been so drained from your magickal exertions, perhaps it would be better for you to retire to the carriage."
“Why thank you, Baron,” Argent nearly beams.
“I could get used to this,” the Invoker thinks to herself as she’s led towards the carriage. But Chareos approaches before the carriage is reached.
Chareos wrote:“Have a told you lately what a vision of beauty you are?” he says smiling as he meets her gaze. Soon after he will ask her for their code phrase.
“No, you haven’t," Argent notes with a wry grin. “In fact, you’ve been quite negligent in that area. I was beginning to think that you forgot all about me.”
When asked, Argent will offer up the code phrase, “Does it go with my tiara?”
Upon reaching the carriage, Argent will dismount and step up in. “Hello Duchess Lysandra and Lady Gabriella. I’ve been asked to ride with you for a time.”
Later on, Validar’s younger sister joins us. Argent will politely listen to any ongoing conversations and will answers any questions asked of her.
Lyonessa's heart jumps at hearing that Phelan was with her sister so recently. However, things turn a bit glum as he has seemingly "lost" her. "How long ago was that?" she asks him, meaning exactly which night she vanished.
"Is it just the two of you travelling together?" she digs deeper, wondering just what her sister might have been up to. "Anything might be a clue as to what happened to her. Did anything strange happen just before she vanished?"

Lyonessa's heart jumps at hearing that Phelan was with her sister so recently. However, things turn a bit glum, as he has seemingly "lost" her. "How long ago was that?" she asks him, meaning exactly which night she vanished.
“Two nights ago,” Phelan answers.
"Is it just the two of you traveling together?" she digs deeper, wondering just what her sister might have been up to. "Anything might be a clue as to what happened to her. Did anything strange happen just before she vanished?"
Phelan pauses to consider an answer, seemingly almost embarrassed by it. Squire Moonshadow urges him on.
“You will answer Lady Lyonessa’s question, sir. The recovery of her sister is most vital to her.”
“It’s a long story,” Phelan finally answers. “We and other adventures were traveling up north. Strange basilisk-like creatures ambushed our camp. Instead of turning us into stone, their gaze forced us into a bleak and desolate swamp. There was a temple deep in the swamp and there we were forced to consume some kind of black water. We were unable to control our bodies! Myveria and I, along with some of the others then left the swamp and traveled to the ruins of Ardelphia. Apparently there were going to join others controlled like us there.”
“But along the outer edges of Ardelphia, something happened. What had been influencing us vanished! Thus we were left among mostly strangers in a strange place. Whatever united effort we had been apart of fell apart and others in the ruins sought to destroy us.”
“We fled to the south with some of the others, but they were picked off as we made our trek. We avoided the Rennydale area fearing coming under this baneful influence again. It took us weeks to make our way further south until we arrived here in Ansimont.”
“As I said, I awoke one morning and she was gone. There was no note or anything. I cannot accept that she would have just left me like that.”
After another pause, Phelan adds, “Your sister and I are lovers, Lady Lyonessa. She vanished from the bed we shared! I’ve been searching for her ever since.”
GM Notes:
Phelan’s story does mirror what you found out from Kieran way back in New Frontiers #36.
Validar has Argent join the Duchess and Lady Allonica in the carriage and later has Lady Rachel stay with them as well. While it may seem particularly paranoid, the problem is that Validar is not only responsible for troops and the Guardians, but several non-combatants, as well as the Duke himself. Vigilance is the watchword for the day.
“Why thank you, Baron,” Argent nearly beams.
"Not at all," Validar replies, his words more for the ears of anyone scrying them or somehow spying upon them more mundanely. "When we return to Ansimont, we will get the best room possible for the rest of each of you ladies."
With Argent apparently un-corrupted and in full control of herself, Validar turns to Sir Acerion for some special assistance.
Validar returns the clasp firmly, a quick smile gracing his features. "I knew I could count on you. We have much to be diligent in before the Duke is safely upon the throne of the Streel Duchy." With Sir Acerion nearby, thanks to the power he radiates, there is not likely to be any vile magick ensnare the Duke and his prowess with his axe is no less ineffective.
(and still waiting for Sherra to catch up in time, so we can find out what's going on...!)
Sir Acerion wrote:"How could I ever forget, my love?" Acerion responds with a smile. His eyes seem more brilliant as he recalls the event. "It was a time that changed my life so drastically for the better. A treasured memory I never wish to lose."
“That it was. Given all that has transpired since that time, it seems almost a lifetime ago.”
Ivy is content to watch what happens as we ride out of Ansimont. She doesn’t notice Sherra and Lyonessa going off on their own. She’s too lost in her own thoughts. Ansimont seems to be a simple town, populated by hard working individuals. It’s as if what goes on beyond their farms does not matter. Ivy can’t help but wonder if those in Wrasseldown felt the same?
What lies in the future fills Ivy’s thoughts. Her impending marriage to Sir Acerion and their taking up residence in Ardelphia seems like the most probable course of actions. The priestess never really thought about marriage before, but things have changed. The idea of being a noble a first was troublesome, since she’s had very little exposure to that sort of world. It was something she dreaded, but now it may not be that bad. While there are many fine and worthy nobles in the kingdom, there are also those who are less desirable. While Ivy has no idea what kind of noble she’d make, surely she wouldn’t be the worst!
Things seem to begin happening once the Knights and the Duke return from the farmhouse. Argent is moved to the carriage for some reason and we begin the ride across town. Instead of riding back to her, Sir Acerion moves closer to the Duke. Ivy moves her horse closer to her beloveds.
“Is there something wrong?” She asks barely above a whisper.
Sherra listens to the tale and it was as she thought. Jacob has no real proof. She still can't help but wonder if this is all some tactic to get them seperated. She almost just lets him go, but says softly as he starts to walk away, "I don't trust you, but thank you."
The procession meets up with Sherra outside of town and Validar calls a halt to the column before they reach the outskirts of town.
"If I know that look upon your face, you have something on your mind," Validar will say.
Sherra is relieved to find they are all safe and smiles her easy smile as she rejoins everyone. "Oh there's definitely something on my mind," she says, "I just met up with another Deville."
She'll give a dramatic pause and expect one of any number of facial expressions to come across Validar's features before continuing, "It was Jacob Deville. He appeared to be some sort of beast-man but wears a holy symbol around his neck. It was of a waterfall filling a pool with no splashes or ripples evident in its arrival. He mentioned a goddess called Eldath, but I don't know enough of the gods to take much from it."
"He said he wanted to warn us," Sherra adds, "although he had no solid proof, just that he assumed the Devilles were up to something simply because they always seemed to be up to something in this region."
"I wasn't overly impressed," Sherra comments, "and I'm half-expecting it's still some sort of trap or ruse to try and throw us off more."

“Is there something wrong?” She asks barely above a whisper.
Acerion notices Ivy riding up to him and smiles at the sight of his beloved. "Nothing is wrong," he says truthfully, but in a hushed tone. "I am merely keeping a more watchful eye for the moment. Validar wished me to, and I concur."
“No, you haven’t," Argent notes with a wry grin. “In fact, you’ve been quite negligent in that area. I was beginning to think that you forgot all about me.”
“In all the world, that is one thing I would never dream of happening,” he says evenly.
As Argent gives the code word, Chareos turns to Validar and nods, “Fear not; she is our beloved Argent.”
“Perhaps,” he says softly though most would hear him. “But then again, to warn to remain on guard is not much of a threat.” After a few moments thought, “If Anismont is known to mistrust and frown upon sorcery ever since the fireball incident, it may be prudent that we refrain for using magiks. The Devilles may use such a fear to their advantage,” he says turning to Validar.
Having little to no understanding of what is transpiring, Rek remains quiet and listens to what is said. He will stay near the front of the column unless otherwise told.
Validar can see that some of the Guardians are starting to realize that there may be some trouble about. Since Validar cannot quantify his concerns, he remains quiet, sure that the precautions they are taking will help them avoid some troubles, although also looking to move head-on into whatever trap the Devilles may have waiting to spring.
As Argent gives the code word, Chareos turns to Validar and nods, “Fear not; she is our beloved Argent.”
Validar slaps Chareos of the back lightly, as he says, "One evening when we have time, let us chat a little about subtlety, my friend, " he says with a chuckle.
Making some plans as the return towards the town of Ansimont, Validar chats idly with those who ride near him. Eventually, they are just outside of town when they encounter Sherra.
The procession meets up with Sherra outside of town and Validar calls a halt to the column before they reach the outskirts of town.
"If I know that look upon your face, you have something on your mind," Validar will say.
"Oh there's definitely something on my mind," she says, "I just met up with another Deville."
Sherra pauses and Validar's brow furrows slightly, as he waits for the details. She prolongs her pause, then continues.
"It was Jacob Deville. He appeared to be some sort of beast-man but wears a holy symbol around his neck. It was of a waterfall filling a pool with no splashes or ripples evident in its arrival. He mentioned a goddess called Eldath, but I don't know enough of the gods to take much from it."
"I cannot say that I do either, Sherra, Validar responds. Turning to his squire Flynn, Validar issues a quick order. "Have Ivy join us here for a moment." Validar waits as Flynn turns his horse around and rides back further to the middle of the procession where Ivy rides near Sir Acerion.
"I know some of the main patrons' details and more about some of our enemies, but little of such specifics," he says to Sherra.
“Perhaps,” he says softly though most would hear him. “But then again, to warn to remain on guard is not much of a threat.”
Validar listens to the rest of Sherra's comments and nods at Chareos' interjection, before continuing. He rubs his chin a moment. "I do not know what they would accomplish by telling us that there is a trap, unless the idea is to try and get us to drop our guard to something else. That will not happen. Or to hit us unawares as we leave here, full of false self-confidence when no trap materializes within Ansimont. That will also not happen. The final concern is that they are trying to make us think that a trap is in place and in avoiding it, we manage to avoid something of importance that is here."
"My intent is to be as safe as possible with those that we must while also trying to break through any traps or behind the scenes undesireable activity by moving straight into it. The only question is how to go about that. Your skills may be very useful this day," Validar says. "Did this Jacob mention any specifics about what they were trying to accomplish or through what means they were doing it?"
After a few moments thought, “If Anismont is known to mistrust and frown upon sorcery ever since the fireball incident, it may be prudent that we refrain for using magiks. The Devilles may use such a fear to their advantage,” he says turning to Validar.
"I would think that at this point, that little could be gained by showing us as harboring some wicked spellcasters. Other than to turn the general people against us in some way. But that seems like a weak tactic at best, without some sort of mental domination of the people or some serious threat they could pose to us physically."
"My concern is that perhaps there are some Devilles or their minions who have been experimenting in some form here, as they did with the undead forces in Wrasseldown. We should be prepared to do a sweep of the town if it is possible."
When Ivy rides up with Squire Flynn, Validar will turn to her and ask, "As you are likely the most knowledgeable about various deities, do you know much about one called Eldath and what the holy symbol for these priests might be?"
The overall plan will be to have the Guardians go into town with the Duke, Duchess and their retinue. We will procure rooms at an inn, preferably two large rooms so that no one is alone at any point.
The procession will ride through town, with those with Detection Spells available using them to see if anything might be amiss. Argent should be able to do any such while hidden in the carriage and those with natural abilities will not raise any suspiscions either.
The soldiers will camp in town where the caravans normally encamp. Since it is off season, there is not likely to be much trade here and I want to keep the troops close.
(And at some point we need to meet up with Lyonessa, Po and Squire Moonshadow as well, which will crystalize some plans even further.)
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion notices Ivy riding up to him and smiles at the sight of his beloved. "Nothing is wrong," he says truthfully, but in a hushed tone. "I am merely keeping a more watchful eye for the moment. Validar wished me to, and I concur."
Ivy nods her understanding of Sir Acerion’s words. In time it occurs to her that the special protections granted him by his god makes those around him safer, so his staying close to the new Duke does make sense.
“I will ride with you,” Ivy simply answers, “so that we can deal with any danger that arises, together.”
Just outside of Ansimont, the procession stops and the Baron and others ride ahead to speak with Sherra. After a time one of the Baron’s squires rides back and asks Ivy to join them.
“I wonder what this is about?” She says to Acerion before riding off.
Baron Validar wrote:When Ivy rides up with Squire Flynn, Validar will turn to her and ask, "As you are likely the most knowledgeable about various deities, do you know much about one called Eldath and what the holy symbol for these priests might be?"
“Eldath?” Ivy repeats. “There is a name you don’t hear very often. Yes, I have some knowledge of that particular goddess. There is a small shrine dedicated to her in God’s House in Elcadan. Her following is small in our lands as there is so much conflict.”
“Eldath is primarily known as the Goddess of Peace, but also includes quiet places, pools, waterfalls, and serenity. I don’t recall exactly what her holy symbol is, but I would imagine that it would fit her sphere of influence. Something involving peace and water.”
“Much like those of my own faith, followers of Eldath have very specific restrictions. For instance, I cannot initiate battle except against undead and demons. Followers of Eldath are pacifists. They are prohibited from attacking anyone or anything, with the exception of defending themselves and those accompanying them.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Not at all," Validar replies, his words more for the ears of anyone scrying them or somehow spying upon them more mundanely. "When we return to Ansimont, we will get the best room possible for the rest of each of you ladies."
“That will do nicely,” Argent answers, perhaps enjoying her current circumstances a bit too much.
Charoes wrote:“In all the world, that is one thing I would never dream of happening,” he says evenly.
“Not if you know what’s good for you,” Argent responds with another grin.
Once in the carriage, Argent immediately regrets having not worn a dress like she used to. To be among such high ranking nobles in adventuring garb does little to help her image.
Phelan pauses to consider an answer, seemingly almost embarrassed by it. Squire Moonshadow urges him on.
“You will answer Lady Lyonessa’s question, sir. The recovery of her sister is most vital to her.”
She glances back at Moonshadow and smiles at him but also subtley tries to indicate it is okay. She appreciates the squire speaking up for her but doesn't want Phelan to clam up.
Lyonessa listens to his story and picks out some things she has heard before! That him and her sister almost ran afoul of that fate is tough to listen to. What fortune that they were spared from anything more. The last part of his story really catches her ear.
After another pause, Phelan adds, “Your sister and I are lovers, Lady Lyonessa. She vanished from the bed we shared! I’ve been searching for her ever since.”
"Oh," she says, then realizes how dumb that sounded. "Certainly then something else must have happened," Lyonessa says quickly. "Why don't you come with us for a bit? Maybe there is something else that will help that you might think of, or maybe we can attempt to locate her through other means. She must still be close by."
Her thoughts drift to the Devilles. Could they know of her? she thinks most likely. If they took her, she might be anywhere. Lyonessa stops dwelling on such thoughts and waits on Phelan's answer. If he agrees, she will look to rejoin the others. If not, she might say more to him before he departs.
My voice, my will, my magic - three blessings bestowed by Mystra that spell your doom
In Ansimont, Lyonessa has met Phelan, the lover of her missing sister Myveria. Phelan explains that they had come under the influence of the black water up near Rennydale, but the affect vanished before they could reach Ardelphia. From there, they journeyed to the south avoiding towns in the Stone Ridge region. They arrived in Ansimont a few days ago, and Myveria seemingly vanished from their bed two mornings ago.
Lyonessa wrote:She glances back at Moonshadow and smiles at him but also subtly tries to indicate it is okay. She appreciates the squire speaking up for her but doesn't want Phelan to clam up.
The squire nods his understanding and adds nothing further. Phelan does then speak.
Lyonessa wrote:"Oh," she says, then realizes how dumb that sounded. "Certainly then something else must have happened," Lyonessa says quickly. "Why don't you come with us for a bit? Maybe there is something else that will help that you might think of, or maybe we can attempt to locate her through other means. She must still be close by."
Phelan considers for a few moments and then says, “I’ve really got nothing to loose at this point. I will accompany you, Lady Lyonessa. Perhaps we’ll be able to find Myveria together.”
Po gives Phelan a hand, pulling him up onto the back of his horse. The riders then continue on, catching up with the main procession as it rides to the Ansimont Farm.
Squire Moonshadow will ride closer to Lyonessa. “My apologies, my lady. I sensed that he was holding back, so I merely tried to loosen his tongue. I did not mean to interfere.”
A few hours later, the group returns to town as night begins to fall. Sherra and Lyonessa reveal their encounters. Sherra intercepted one Jacob Deville, a man-beast in the service of Eldath. He claimed that Ansimont was a trap for mages and that many disappear here. He suspects that his family is somehow involved. Lyonessa adds that her sister, a mage, vanished just two days ago from the bed she shared with Phelan.
"No, he was very vague, purposefully or otherwise," Sherra replies.
She then listens as Ivy arrives and explains what she knows of Eldath. It's very interesting, but still doesn't prove anything. The thief has a couple questions of her own, "Could someone wear a holy symbol but not have any belief or faith in the symbol they wear? I know a priest of another faith probably couldn't, but what about just anybody?"

Things seemingly begin coming together. Sherra asks aloud after Lyonessa introduces Phelan and explains things, "I wonder then if there isn't some truth to Jacob's words, but exactly how much?"
"That will be most welcome," Acerion replies, "I will never tire of your company."
Just outside of Ansimont, the procession stops and the Baron and others ride ahead to speak with Sherra. After a time one of the Baron’s squires rides back and asks Ivy to join them.
“I wonder what this is about?” She says to Acerion before riding off.
"I was wondering the same myself," Acerion replies as Ivy rides off. He is most curious at what Sherra uncovered, especially since he hadn't been aware she had left the group. Unfortunately, his current duties will not allow for him to learn of the news firsthand. So instead, the paladin remains vigilant, knowing he will be filled in later.
Squire Moonshadow will ride closer to Lyonessa. “My apologies, my lady. I sensed that he was holding back, so I merely tried to loosen his tongue. I did not mean to interfere.”
"Please don't worry yourself on that," Lyonessa says, smiling at the squire reassuringly. "He was holding back and it worked. I just didn't want you to push him too far was all. Thank you for your assistance."
Lyonessa finally rejoins the others. She makes introductions, "This is Phelan. He was travelling with my sister and they arrived here a few nights ago. She vanished from their room two nights prior and he has been searching for her."
She listens to the horrific sounding man that Sherra met, who was a Deville also. how many are there? Lyonessa thinks to herself. and are all of them here? She doesn't like the sound of mages vanishing though, and her heart begins beating faster.
"Was my sister practicing any magic during your time here?" she asks Phelan. If she wasn't then Lyonessa can't imagine just how her sister would have been abducted.
My voice, my will, my magic - three blessings bestowed by Mystra that spell your doom
Baron Validar wrote:"I see that my paranoia is rubbing off on you, my friend. I plan to keep Sir Acerion in constant close proximity to the Duke since his mere presence will interrupt any attempts to charm or corrupt the Duke or anyone else for that matter. A common room is a fine choice for our adventurers."
“Very good, my friend,” Sir Corley simply answers.
Later, we ride back into town and are updated with the latest news from Lady Sherra and Lady Lyonessa.
“This is most disturbing news,” Sir Corley notes. “But not too surprising given the nature of our foes. If Ansimont is a trap to capture mages, then I wonder why does those responsible need mages specifically? If such a mechanism does exist, then using it to do harm to the Duke and Duchess does seem reasonable. But how do they expect to carry out such a plot with them so well guarded? We must also consider what would be the easiest point to capture a mage since that is their original intent.”
“The only thing that comes to mind is while asleep, as that is when both would be off guard. Therefore, the threat we face might come during the middle of the night while at the inn. We must be prepared for that possibility.”
Sir Corley will send his squires off to secure lodging for the evening. One Inn would be ideal, with large common rooms. One room would be for the men, the other for the ladies.
“I promise that we will make every effort to find your sister, Lady Lyonessa.”
Ivy quickly learns that Sherra has encountered another Deville, one who seems to be a follower of Eldath, while Lyonessa has news concerning her sister. They’ve been warned that Ansimont has been secretly capturing mages for some dire reason. Lyonessa’s sister appears to have fallen victim to this.
Sherra wrote:She then listens as Ivy arrives and explains what she knows of Eldath. It's very interesting, but still doesn't prove anything. The thief has a couple questions of her own, "Could someone wear a holy symbol but not have any belief or faith in the symbol they wear? I know a priest of another faith probably couldn't, but what about just anybody?"
“It really would depend on the god in question,” Ivy answers after considering. “While it is true that only a priest of that faith can make use of the powers of their holy symbol, what it does to non-priests varies. For instance, mine would not do harm to any normal person, but would most likely burn demons and undead. Since Eldath is the Goddess of Peace, I doubt she would cause harm to anyone unless they had done something to deserve her ire. At worse she would probably just hurt them a little, but not do any serious harm. In my opinion, this Jacob does not have to be a follower of Eldath to wear her symbol. But, he probably hasn’t done anything to make Eldath punish him either. Sorry, I cannot be more helpful than that.”
Plans for the evening are made and Sir Corley makes a deduction.

“There is another possibility, Sir Corley,” Ivy adds. “Both must eat. What if a sleeping potion was mixed into their food and drink? That could explain how Lyonessa’s sister was spirited away without her companion being alerted. Likewise, a mage would be nearly defenseless while asleep and easily captured.”
“Fortunately, I had the foresight to include a spell to purify food and drink among my prayers. I would suggest that we dine in private this evening. All the food must be brought close together and then I will remove any impurities and toxins from it. If our theory is correct, then we’ll be visited later on by those who are responsible for these disappearances. Then perhaps we can find out what is truly going on here in Ansimont.”
Sherra and Ivy continue their discussion about the details of Sherra’s meeting with Jacob Deville and the potential truth of his words, as well as his affiliation.
Things seemingly begin coming together. Sherra asks aloud after Lyonessa introduces Phelan and explains things, "I wonder then if there isn't some truth to Jacob's words, but exactly how much?"
“I doubt we will be able to ascertain that answer at the moment,” Validar replies. “There are too many variables and unknowns to accept things as presented. The other possibility we must accept is that even if this Deville is desiring to be on our side, the others may know of his presence and use that to their own ends. My counsel is to plan for as many contingencies as possible.”
Ivy is unable to clarify if Jacob is truly a priest of Eldath or just a follower or nothing at all.
“Not to worry. Even if he were a confirmed priest of Eldath, it does not mean he is working to help us. Peace has many meanings to many people and eliminating us could result in more peace than what is to come if we continue our plans. He could be on our side or not.”
"In any case, we will proceed as though he is a potential threat to us." Validar notices that Lyonessa, as well as Sir Corley's squire and Po, have rejoined them. "You look like to have some news," Validar states, seeing the look on Lyonessa's face.
Lyonessa finally rejoins the others. She makes introductions, "This is Phelan. He was travelling with my sister and they arrived here a few nights ago. She vanished from their room two nights prior and he has been searching for her."
"Indeed, it seems that we may be closer to recovering your sister as well. That would be a wonderful addition to this mission. We will do what we can to sniff out this insidious racket, if it is true, and bring it down."
Sir Corley and Lady Ivy offer some suggestions on what may have happened here and what the ambush could be. Validar listens as they exchange some ideas.
"I think your suggestions are sound and we will operate as such. Remember that the drow were placing souls into the magic items and it is possible that these mages have been abducted for a similar fate somehow. Also the Hextorites were collecting magic items for a giant sacrifice, so there is no reason to assume that this enemy could be collecting some 'magic-potential' for a sacrifice. I would not discount anything in dealing with these demons and their consorts."
"The question I have is about this law against mages in the first place. If it truly is a pretense, then is Charles working for these people, either intentionally or inadvertantly? Otherwise, how is it established and kept in place. This is too odd."
"Everyone else continue on your plans. Sir Corley, ride with me. We are going back to Charles Ansimont's farm to discuss a few more things. We will meet up soon enough."
The plan will go as suggested:
We will obtain two large rooms and be conspicuous in doing so.
Argent will teleport with the ladies to Jallarzi's Tower, after setting up any defenses or protections she might have.
The food will be obtained locally, but cleansed by Ivy.
Any protections or defenses available to any of the spellcasters should be set up.
Sherra will go about the town trying to learn what she can.
A few of us, including myself, will be certain to make ourselves seen as well about town, just to be sure that any traps will be sprung.
Sir Acerion will remain in close proximity to the Duke and we will likely be in close proximity to him most of the evening.

“I would like to join you,” he says evenly. “Never was one to sit idly. Unless you would like me to entertain a different suggestion.”
Validar slaps Chareos of the back lightly, as he says, "One evening when we have time, let us chat a little about subtlety, my friend, " he says with a chuckle.
“Aye, though it maybe like teaching a bull how to dance,” with a smirk and chuckle back.

“Validar, If you wish me to, I could draw attention to myself in order to draw whomever is near out of hiding. Just give me the word and a few Chareos’ may go for a stroll.” Then he drops his voice to Validar before he departs, “I still have a Polymorph self and Invisibility within memory as well; they could be useful to use as a ruse as well.”
Once the rooms are secured and it is generally ‘safe’, Chareos will subtly and quietly cast Detect Evil, first focusing on Phelan and then to anyone who seems to be lingering about the area who isnot of the procession.
"Indeed, it seems that we may be closer to recovering your sister as well. That would be a wonderful addition to this mission. We will do what we can to sniff out this insidious racket, if it is true, and bring it down."
"It has been so long and now to be this close," Lyonessa trails off. "I can't give up hope no matter how things may seem now."
She looks around before continuing, "This hardly seems like the kind of place for such a horrible string of disappearances to occur, but that's probably the whole point."
“With all due respect, how do we know this Phelan is telling the truth? For all we know he could be as he say he is, but then what if he is merely a ploy as well? What I am trying to say is this. He could have had a hand in Lyonessa’s sister’s disappearance.”
Regnak brings up a good point, but then Lyonessa thinks even Regnak could be part of the same large plot. just how paranoid are we all going to become? she thinks.
"There are ways to verify certain things," Lyonessa says in response. "We will not fall easily to subversion."
If things 'check out' with Phelan (like having Acerion check for evil) then Lyonessa will spend some time later talking with Phelan. "So where have the two of you been?" she'll ask. "Is there anyone who might wish the two of you harm? Any enemies or things like that?"
Lyonessa hopes for a clue, or maybe just rule out other possibilties to get closer to being re-united with her sister.

Validar catches Lyonessa giving Regnak an odd look and though silent, believes he knows what she is thinking. "We can take paranoia to the extreme. Any single individual who attempted to threaten a group such as this would surely forfeit their very life." But then Validar remembers that Nathan stated his mission was to be killed. He failed in all but that however. Validar face is a grim mask as he realizes the level of concern that grips them all now.
"There are ways to verify certain things," Lyonessa says in response. "We will not fall easily to subversion."
"Indeed, our Bardess is correct," Validar affirms. "We have had more insidious attempts against us fail. I doubt we shall be facing such clumsy efforts."
"Everyone else continue on your plans. Sir Corley, ride with me. We are going back to Charles Ansimont's farm to discuss a few more things. We will meet up soon enough."
“I would like to join you,” he says evenly. “Never was one to sit idly. Unless you would like me to entertain a different suggestion.”
Validar considers the request and looks over to Corley for a brief moment. "Very well," the baron responds. If this Regnak is somehow involved in these problems, then better to have him near than to cause trouble for the others. And another body will not be wasted if they run into other unforseen events.
"Remember what I mentioned about subtlety, my friend. While we are trying to bait the trap, we do not want to unnecessarily bring the populace against us. We must win their trust as well as protect them and defeat the enemies here."
"First I want to know why Charles has allowed this mage-suppression to continue and see if there is anything else he might know and what level is his involvement in this."
"Everyone be alert and make yourself seen, but be respectful and go about your business as though we are just passing through. This will be more successful if we do not raise too many suspicions."
