New Frontiers #98

Attention is now focused on the small boy that Sherra rescued from Wrasseldown. Sir Acerion has determined that the lad radiates evil. Talk about what to do next comes up. Jallarzi suggest casting Dispel Magic on him, as he might be in disguise. Crysania confirms that she can cast True Sight, but must rest to regain the spell first. Baron Validar decides to try and question the boy now, before waiting for morning.

The boy is where he has been for the most part, in the arms of Sherra seemingly asleep. He stirs, as the group gets closer. Surprisingly, a greenish glow comes to his hand and the boy moves his hand closer to Sherra’s face!

“Stay back or she dies,” the boy warns. The voice is that of a child, but it sounds more like that of an adult.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

(I am assuming that Serena and Sir Acerion moved through the area the night before as, Jallazari is still there, and the priests have to pray for the spells they currently do not have in memory. I could be mistaken. Please ignore if I am incorrect.)

Chareos watches as Sir Acerion and Serena begin to have doubts about the boy, who is laying upon Sherra’s lap sleeping.
The boy is where he has been for the most part, in the arms of Sherra seemingly asleep. He stirs, as the group gets closer. Surprisingly, a greenish glow comes to his hand and the boy moves his hand closer to Sherra’s face!
Seeing what is transpiring, Chareos watches in a mixture of amazement and horror as the boy’s hand glows green and raises to Sherra’s face and telling them to stay back or she dies. Forgetting he had a Dispel Magic within his memory, Chareos gently touches Argent’s arm, and motions her to step back with him for a moment. Leaning down and whispering in her ear. “I have a Dispel Magic still within memory; keep it talking.” Moving away from the others, Chareos gets into a position where he can see the boy and as silently as he can begins to cast Dispel Magic centered on the boy.

Crysania:

Shortly after being asked if she has a True Sight spell available, Crysania learns about the rescued child radiating evil.

“That explains how he survived the massacre,” Crysania notes. “We were meant to find him.”

The child stirs, his hand glows with greenish energy and he threatens Sherra with it.
“Stay back or she dies,” the boy warns. The voice is that of a child, but it sounds more like that of an adult.
“Carry out your threat and then you will be the next to fall,” Crysania warns coldly, her battleaxe in hand. “But if you wish to continue living, then you will dispel your magic and surrender. The choice, life or death, is yours.”

Lyonessa:

Soon Lyonessa hears the troubling news about the young child Sherra rescued. As she makes her way to join the others, a horrific scene is unfolding.

The boy is where he has been for the most part, in the arms of Sherra seemingly asleep. He stirs, as the group gets closer. Surprisingly, a greenish glow comes to his hand and the boy moves his hand closer to Sherra’s face!

Lyonessa stays back, not wanting to risk Sherra's life. Crysania seems more straightforward, making a threat that the priestess will no doubt carry out, but will it be worth the risk? She will quietly begin to cast Suggestion.

Should the spell be ready and the small child, or whatever it is, not already be dealt with, Lyonessa will approach carefully and say "but can't you see we are hardly your enemies?" in conjuction with the spell in an effort to convince him that we are at least allies if not friends.

(OOC: I don’t see any reason why Argent would be present when the child is confronted. The absorption of the Magic Missiles was done in private, so as to not alarm anyone. From there Argent turned in as posted previously.)

When it is revealed that the rescued lad radiates evil and that such a thing is unheard of in such a small child, it becomes clear that the boy is not what he seems. Grimly, Sir Corley will accompany the group that goes to question him. But he’ll remain out of sight of the boy, ready to act should it be necessary.

Serena wrote:“Such magic does exist,” Serena confirms. “They are called Truespells and can be used by both mages and priests. But as you say, they are the ultimate feats of spell casting. Only the best and most powerful can even hope to comprehend such enchantments.”
“Truespells,” Jallarzi repeats, becoming more familiar with the word. “Then perhaps the spells built into our castles were these Truespells then.”
Baron Validar wrote:"We must strive to regain this knowledge then. Putting ourselves on par with other civilizations will be necessary for Cynalon's growth and continued prosperity."
Yes, we must, but I fear that it will be a long time off. Such knowledge will take time to learn. There are many spells that we know of that neither Sharadin nor myself can cast. If these Truespells lie beyond the existing knowledge, then this will not happen soon.”

When the child stirs and threatens Sherra, Jallarzi will stay back so as to not crowd. But she’ll have Power Word: Stun on her lips and will cast it when the opportunity presents itself.

Sherra stirs a bit, knowing she was sleeping with the young child in her arms. Before drifting back to sleep, she hears a voice that is anything but innocent. There seems to be a glow nearby too, but she tries to continue to feign sleep.

If she's successful, she'll try to figure out what's going on and hopefully find an opening to act. If the child detects her ruse, then Sherra will not do anything aggresive as she has no desire to lose her life.

Sir Acerion:

Knowing several of his companions are joining him and Serena to learn what is going on, Acerion strides forward towards the sleeping child. However, it seems that this being is more alert than he first appeared.

Acerion takes a step back and stands there with his hands open. He hears Crysania prepare to make short work of the child, but his concern right now is to not lose Sherra in the process. He knows of one way to do it, but Sherra seems to be aslepp and the paladin isn't sure she would know what to do even if there was time. So instead, he'll bide his time and see what the being wants to do.

The future of Cynalon...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

Serena explains more about Spell Engines.

“I doubt, at this time, that you have the resources and the skills to create them. No offense, Baron, but by Alphatian standards, Cynalon is a magically poor nation. As such the Empire pays you no heed. As far as the Empress is concerned, this is wild, unclaimed territory. Thus Alphatian mages have had a free hand to do here what they please. Thus you had Keln and his followers to contend with, and even earlier the Lich Lords. But not all Alphatian mages are malevolent, as the Fellowship of Mages came from the same background.”

"Perhaps we do not have the skills currently, but there are many secrets hidden in Cynalon waiting recovery. And my plans range between immediate and long-term as well. While I am aware that it will be a process to reach this level ourselves, it will happen. Further, if we can obtain some in the near future, it will only help us in learning more about them."

"As for Alphatian, I definitely understand the potential threat they pose. I know some of their history and I know that we could easily find ourselves at war with them."

“Truespells,” Jallarzi repeats, becoming more familiar with the word. “Then perhaps the spells built into our castles were these Truespells then.”

“That is possible, especially if your forefathers did have such skills.”

"And if they did, then the secrets are here. We just have to find them. As we grow in knowledge, it will only become easier over time. Soon is a relative term. As King Victor the First was fond of saying, 'Change will never be like one predicts and usually occurs much more rapidly than can be expected'. I definitely ascribe to the same philosophy. Look at the changes to Cynalon in just the last few months. The coming year will be unlike anything we ever anticipated."

“From what little I do know about these enchantments, they lie beyond all standard spellcasting. Only the most powerful and skilled can make use of them.”

“But just how long it takes you to reach this summit is variable. The Alphatians used Spell Engines to grow a vast empire that spanned many dozens of worlds. But now they are in decline and have been for hundreds of years. Their time as passed and it seems the Gods know this as well.”

“There has not been a Tower of Magic since the destruction of the Alphatian Homeworld, before the Alphatians arrived on Arret a thousand years ago. But now events have been placed into motion where the Tower will return and it will return within Cynalon’s borders. Then you will have the tools that you need to combat the evils that you face. You will have people who understand the mysteries that currently elude you.”

Validar listens to this talk about the Tower of Magic and he is intrigued. "Where is this Tower of Magic to be? Do you know anything more about it? You speak of its return; is that a rebuild or a physical move of an existing structure?"

"You may be correct about Alphatian diplomacy, but if this Tower of Magic is truly the as desireable a place as it seems, then many mages will come of thier own volition, I should think. That alone will increase the knowledge base of the kingdom. Of course, we will also be pressed with the defense of such a place. It seems that Cynalon is indeed perched in a place ready to attain greatness."

"There is much to do on many levels. The immensity of the task we face does not elude me. Of that you can be certain."

Small package, big trouble...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

A group of the Guardians goes to check on the boy who has been detected as evil. Once there, they find that the 'boy' is indeed malevolent and aware of their intrusion.

Crysania threatens the creature, while others seek to ease the threat placed against their comrade. Validar is confident that they possess sufficient power and skill to dispatch whatever this being is, but the threat to Sherra is real. With the enemies that they face, it is possible that the being has some form of death magic at its disposal.

Still, the tension in the air makes it clear that actions are being taken and Validar does not wish to interfere with any of them. He will not step forward, nor retreat, although his hand does go to rest firmly on his sword. "Who are you and what do you hope to gain with your presence here?" Validar will ask in a commanding voice. "Clearly your ruse has failed and your mission compromised." He will refrain form saying more just yet in the unlikley possibility that Lyonessa's magic has some effect on the being.

Post Continued:

A stand-off is taking place. The child that Sherra rescued from Wrasseldown is clearly now anything but a child. Sir Acerion detected evil from him, evil far more intense than one his age should possibly possess! As many of the group goes to confront the child, he stirs, a greenish energy comes over his hand, and he threatens to take Sherra’s life! Sir Acerion takes a step back, but Crysania and Baron Validar are unmoved.
Crysania wrote:“Carry out your threat and then you will be the next to fall,” Crysania warns coldly, her battleaxe in hand. “But if you wish to continue living, then you will dispel your magic and surrender. The choice, life or death, is yours.”
“I do not fear death like you do,” the child counters. “Do not let this body fool you. I am far older than any of you can imagine.”

Validar will ask in a commanding voice. "Clearly your ruse has failed and your mission compromised." He will refrain form saying more just yet in the unlikely possibility that Lyonessa's magic has some effect on the being.
“I am Nathan Deville," the child announces. “And my mission should be perfectly clear by now. I am to kill as many of you as I can before being killed myself! Starting with this trusting fool!”

While that was going on, Lyonessa subtly casts a Suggestion spell. She then moves closer.
Lyonessa wrote:Should the spell be ready and the small child, or whatever it is, not already be dealt with, Lyonessa will approach carefully and say "But can't you see we are hardly your enemies?" in conjunction with the spell in an effort to convince him that we are at least allies if not friends.
“Hardly,” is all Nathan says.

At that moment, the murderous child feels Sherra move. He glances towards the dark-haired thief for a moment, focusing his attention away from the other Guardians. At that moment, the Lady Sallavarian steps forward and utters Power Word: Stun. Nathan reels from the spell, unable to form any coherent thoughts or even maintain his balance. He tumbles from Sherra’s arms and falls flat on the floor. The greenish glow from his hand fades away.

“He’ll be unable to act for a few minutes at least,” Jallarzi advises. “Decide quickly what you’re going to do with him before the effect fades.”

Crysania:

Battleaxe in hand, Crysania’s eyes do not waver from the murderous child-creature.
“I do not fear death like you do,” the child counters. “Do not let this body fool you. I am far older then any of you can imagine.”
“Many say that, but when their time does come they do cower and whimper. It is clear that you are far more than you appear.”

An opening presents itself and Crysania does step forward, but the Lady Sallavarian acts faster and she neutralizes the threat with her magic.
“He’ll be unable to act for a few minutes at least,” Jallarzi advises. “Decide quickly what you’re going to do with him before the effect fades.”
“Clean and efficient,” Crysania notes. “He should be destroyed before he recovers. He is a Deville and has demonic blood in him. We cannot be certain what other abilities he possesses. He might be able to vanish and escape before we could stop him. He has admitted to being on a mission of murder that would only end with his death. Let us end this now. We cannot let any harm come to the Duke and his family.”

Regardless of what transpires next, Crysania will see if Sherra is all right. “I am pleased that you are unharmed. Do not think of me as cold and uncaring. I knew your life was in danger, but what no one else knew was that I have a Raise Dead spell in memory. Thus should the worst have transpired I could have brought you back to life. Thank Heironeous it did not come to that.”

“The Tower of Magic is the seat of Mystran worship and power. It is akin to your King’s Royal Palace. Mystra is worshiped above all other gods in Alphatia and that she has chosen this land as the place for the Tower to be is startling to many Alphatians. There are those who will not, cannot accept such a thing. Indeed, my original mission was to come here and see if this Kharyna was worthy of this honor by my superiors. Unlike them, I do not question the methods of the Lady of Mysteries. If Kharyna is to be the one, then so be it.”

“I have only seen pictures of the old tower, but it is a magnificent structure. It is a great fortress over 1000’ feet high at its peak. The main tower reaches this level, while eight others surround the main tower, rising over 500’ themselves. A ring of smaller towers that form the 50’ high outer walls in turn surrounds this. Courtyards and the main entrances to the Tower lie between these outer gates and the inner ones.”

“There are two spurs from the main tower complex. One is the Knight’s spur, where those of the Order of the Mystic Fire are trained. The opposite spur is the Ranger’s spur, for those in the Order of the Shooting Stars are trained. Perhaps the term tower is misleading in this instance. The Tower of Magic is essentially a small city capable of being home to thousands of beings.”

“The first ten levels of the tower are the living and training areas. The second level has numerous small temples for acolytes to be trained. There is a open central shaft for the first five levels where a permanent form of Starflight exists. The eleventh level holds the Grand Temple of Mystra. The twelfth the offices of the Master or Mistress of the Tower as the case may be. Their private quarters are on the fourteenth level. It is suspected that a dock for flying ships exists on the peak of the tower. It is a vast, and magical structure.”

“You are correct, Baron, but you must remember that while they will come to the tower, they may not have any loyalty to Cynalon. My loyalty is first and foremost to my Goddess. Anything else is secondary. Mystra’s will does lie along your desires, so we are allies.”

An uneasy decision...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris -

“At least we have some inkling of what to look for now. It appears my mission after assisting you will to attempt to uncover this lost magic.”

"It is unfortunate that we will have our own tasks to continue to complete and not be able to directly assist you, Jallarzi. There is so much to accomplish now that everyone will be more than busy."

“More is known about the Tower of Magic,” Jallarzi explains, “But not much. The Arch Mage Gaz began construction of the place where the tower is to be over a thousand years ago. He never finished the task and it is now monster infested ruins that adventurers have been exploring for generations. It is in the foothills of the Silver Sierra’s, facing Lake Amsorak. "With Kharyna and yourself involved, it seems that Cynalon does indeed have a promising future in the realm of magic. Just as we must train up a new crop of Knights to protect the Kingdom with sword, a new generation of mages will be needed as well. It seems that we continue to be on the right track to redemption."

The discussion about the Tower of Magic continues and Serena's description is quite fascinating.

"An incredible location and truly one which will result in greater power and prestige for the Kingdom. If what you say is true, it will be an amazing sight," Validar responds.

"You may be correct about Alphatian diplomacy, but if this Tower of Magic is truly the as desirable a place as it seems, then many mages will come of their own volition, I should think. That alone will increase the knowledge base of the kingdom. Of course, we will also be pressed with the defense of such a place. “You are correct, Baron, but you must remember that while they will come to the tower, they may not have any loyalty to Cynalon. My loyalty is first and foremost to my Goddess. Anything else is secondary. Mystra’s will does lie along your desires, so we are allies.”

"Believe me, Inquisitor, your words are not lost on me," Validar says with an even tone. He has never truly trusted clerics nor the gods they profess to worship. They are allies due to circumstances and that can change. That will have to be sufficient for now. "But exchange of knowledge does not require loyalty or interest. That is the beauty of it. And if Kharyna is indeed destined to 'rule' such a place, I am confident that much good will come of it."

------------------------------------------------
The 'boy' is revealed to be Nathan Deville. The name is not directly known to Validar, but he claims to be old and therefore is likely quite powerful.

“I am Nathan Deville," the child announces. “And my mission should be perfectly clear by now. I am to kill as many of you as I can before being killed myself! Starting with this trusting fool!”

"You may be the only one who is killed here, Deville. Your mission is already futile."

The standoff with Nathan Deville is not a long one. Validar's cousin, Jallarzi, strikes when Nathan's attention is diverted and he is Stunned.

“He’ll be unable to act for a few minutes at least,” Jallarzi advises. “Decide quickly what you’re going to do with him before the effect fades.”

Validar pulls his sword from its scabbard and moves forward.

“While I am forced to agree with you as far as the long term goes, should we not question him? He may possess knowledge of use to us.”

Validar pauses for the slightest of moments. "There is a quick knee-jerk response and there is a reasoned, thought out response. In this case, they are one and the same." Validar raises his sword to strike and embeds the blade into the being's chest. He will then strike in an attempt to behead the thing.

Validar turns back to the others, expecting some possible looks of shock or even horror. His voice remains calm and even. "The quick, knee-jerk response would be to strike back against our deadly foe. To kill him before he kills us or any others. The Devilles are a menace to everything we hold dear and must be dealt with quickly and efficiently. They will not negotiate and they will not compromise and we must do the same. That leads us to this result," he says looking back to the 'child'.

"However, in analyzing significantly more information, one comes to the conclusion that while learning information would be extremely important, the likelihood of Nathan imparting anything of significance, especially now that his position of strength was compromised, is minimal at best. We could not trust anything he said to be the actual truth. Further, we run the risk of him escaping or causing more mischief."

"We can defeat the Devilles without his information, but the damage that could be caused by him now or in the future would be unacceptable. Therefore, we reach the same conclusion."

"The question that remains," Validar says stoically, "is whether any of us have the ability to deal with him 'permanently'". He looks primarily to Jallarzi and Serena.

Lyonessa:

Should the spell be ready and the small child, or whatever it is, not already be dealt with, Lyonessa will approach carefully and say "But can't you see we are hardly your enemies?" in conjunction with the spell in an effort to convince him that we are at least allies if not friends.

“Hardly,” is all Nathan says.

Lyonessa is scared for a moment as this Nathan appears completely unaffected by her spell. Then Sherra stirs a bit and it gets very tense until the Lady Sallavarian utters a Power Word, which does have enough power. Even though Lyonessa's attempt failed, she looks at it as a learning situation. She now knows that her spells are largely ineffectual against these foes. She will definitely need further blessings to be granted by her goddess before she will be able to affect these demons directly.

There is discussion on what to do next with this Deville, but Validar ends all discussion with his blade. Lyonessa agrees that there would be little they could have learned from him that they could trust as truthful information. It was probably the best thing to do, but the quickness of it was a bit of a shock.

Baron Validar -

“An intact body is required to raise him from the dead,” Crysania casually answers. “Burning the remains is the only way to make sure such a thing does not happen.”

"If that is an option that makes certain we shall not deal with Nathan Deville again, so be it," Validar states. "Still I cannot help but think that he seemed unconcerned with death or leaving his body 'behind', as it were. Either he does not fear death or he has some other means to regain his 'life'." Validar looks at the body and the lesson learned here today is clear. "This was a hollow victory, but an important lesson for us all. I will have these remains disposed of as necessary."

Validar will have his squires make arrangements to have the body taken outside and burned. He will be present as this is done to be certain there are no unexpected surprises, but allow them to handle the details. "Have the ashes scattered about once completed, just to be certain."

The trials of this day never seem to end, Validar thinks.

Regnak

Hearing a large amount of horses, and the calls of young children as the column arrives, a young man of age walks into the midday sun, dressed in studded leather. Shielding his eyes from the sun he notices the knight's banner and steps slowly forward, curiously studying those before him as he makes his way through the gapping crowd.

As the knight and of his procession head toward the center of town, the follower of the Lady of Mysteries walks slowly along, merely gazing upon them, hoping for a glance at their mannerisms as well as their intents. Soon enough the contingent comes to a halt and they speak amongst themselves.
“A friendlier greeting than Wrasseldown. Where is this scout that is to show us our way?” he asks curiously to the others, wondering if they are to meet with the scout within one of the establishments.

"That was not clearly determined, my friend Chareos. However, he would not be much of a tracker if he was not aware of a group of this size entering town, now would he be?" Validar asks with a wry grin.

“Aye he wouldn’t,” he said, chewing on a piece of black root. His oddly colored eyes flickered between those gathered as he brought his right hand to his mouth taking the black root from his mouth. As he does so his devotion to his patron goes without question for his hand is etched by that of Mystra’s holy symbol which coincides with the same that hangs loosely about his neck.

He steps before Sir Validar. “I bid you welcome to Ansimont, Sir Knight,” he says evenly, his hair falling into his eyes. As he brushes it aside his eyes come into view, one steel grey and the other as blue as the sky above. “When I spoke to Lady Sallavarian, it was my understanding I was to lead but a few. Not the army of Pyris,” he says evenly as he looks at the contingent standing behind them patiently. “Where are my manners, forgive me. In these lands such subtleties are forgotten. Regnak Strakeln, member of the Order of the Shooting Stars. Most in these lands know me as Rek,” he says with a smirk as he once again pushes his hair from his face, a white scar becomes more noticeable that stretches from beneath his eye down through his beard.

“Lords? Milita?” he repeats the words curiously as he thinks for a moment. “You would be hard pressed to find a militia about here. These are simple people, hard working and strong.”

“There isn’t much in the way of nobility either come to think of it. The barony fell as the hordes overwhelmed Akorros. Some say they stood and fought while others fled to the mountains when trouble arose, while others perished and lay in unmarked graves."

"Perhaps there is one you may wish to speak to, an Elder, Charles Ansimont. He lives just south of town. I can show you to him if you wish.”

Back to Ansimont...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris -

With the difficulties of the previous day behind them and a relatively short ride from Wrasseldown to Ansimont, the group rides into town just past noon. Fortunately, the crowd is more surprised at the column of troops than worried.

As the group makes their way to the town center, they are greeted by a scout, apparently the one that Jallarzi had hired for them.

He steps before Sir Validar. “I bid you welcome to Ansimont, Sir Knight,” he says evenly, his hair falling into his eyes. As he brushes it aside his eyes come into view, one tawny brown and the other as blue as the sky above. “When I spoke to Lady Sallavarian, it was my understanding I was to lead but a few. Not the army of Pyris,” he says evenly as he looks at the contingent standing behind them patiently.

"Greetings to you as well," Validar states. Although not introducing himself, his statements seem to indicate that this is the tracker that Validar's cousin had sent here.

"This is but two squadrons of Pyrisian cavalry," Validar says indicating the mounted soldiers behind them. "But you are correct, you were hired to take several of our number across country towards Akorros. I am Baron Validar of Pyris. This is Sir Corley and Sir Acerion." Validar will give Sir Acerion a knowing nod so as to have him check the man for Evil.

"Well met, Regnak Strakeln," Validar says, wondering briefly about the word KELN in part of the tracker's name. Clearly dealing with these demons has influenced them, but as they learned in Wrasseldown, better to be safe rather than sorry.

"I am surprised that we were not met by some militia or guards of the local lord, considering the size of our procession."

"How very... odd?" Validar says, trying to come to grips with the concept. "Simple people still need protection. A militia is vital in places like this. We just learned how vulnerable these small towns can be without proper leadership and defenses. Clearly, the people of Elcadan Duchy have been left to their own devices for far too long. With the arrival of Duke Relon, that will be started to be made right again."

"If the infrastructure of the barony fell, why didn't they turn to neighbors for assistance. It all seems very out of sorts. But no matter, what's done is done, and there are changes in the works. If there is a need for a new baron, the Duke shall make that determination. Certainly the defenses will need to be shorn up and a militia formed, if not a formal army begun."

"Perhaps there is one you may wish to speak to, an Elder, Charles Ansimont. He lives just south of town. I can show you to him if you wish.”

"That would be most appreciated, Regnak." Validar will turn to his squires. "Sara, have the troops accompany the carriages with us. For the moment, I want to have a full contingent of protection for the Duke and Duchess. Flynn, inform Sir Belfor of what is happening as well."

Validar will approach the Duke and tell him that they are being led to a local lord, Charles Ansimont. "I am not yet ready to let my guard down here, so we are taking all precautions, militarily." Validar will have Po ride to the other Guardians and let them know that we are heading to meet the local lord and that we seem to have located our scout, but to be on guard in case there is some deception or ambush here.

Once everything is prepared, Validar will return to the front of the column. "Lead on, Regnak."

Regnak will nod to each in turn, “Well met.”

We just learned how vulnerable these small towns can be without proper leadership and defenses. Clearly, the people of Elcadan Duchy have been left to their own devices for far too long. With the arrival of Duke Relon, that will be started to be made right again."
“Do not be so quick to judge these people. When the call comes many leave their farms and trades to defend their way of life. While they lack training they do not lack heart or the will. My uncle used to say men defending their homes and loved ones are more powerful than hired soldiers Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. Besides, They have done well this long.”
“Why is the sky blue? Why does a bear slumber for the winter? Why do some plants poison while others refresh the body? Only Mystra knows,” he says simply, only to point out that not all is known.

Rek gets a quizzical look as Baron Validar speaks of forming a militia. “But this is not Pyrisian land? How is it that you presume you may do as you say?” he asks clearly confused.
"That would be most appreciated, Regnak." Validar will turn to his squires. "Sara, have the troops accompany the carriages with us. For the moment, I want to have a full contingent of protection for the Duke and Duchess. Flynn, inform Sir Belfor of what is happening as well."
Bringing two fingers parted he whistles to the side. Soon after a chestnut gelding, canters into the square. Taking the reins within his hands he strokes the mount's nose for a moment, then raises up into the saddle.
Once everything is prepared, Validar will return to the front of the column. "Lead on, Regnak."
“Call me Rek if you please,” cantering forward, “Only my Uncle called me Regnak.” He said evenly as he heads toward the Ansimont farm.

Rek's appearance-
Regnak is about 25 years of age and stands roughly 5’11. His auburn hair is long and forced to the back of his head. Those who take note will see his hair starting to recede. His features are stern with a full beard though a white scar etches it way down from underneath his right eye to his chin. As you gaze at his eyes some may look in surprise while others as if he were a freak of nature for his eyes are not the same color. One is a sky blue (right) and the other is a steel grey.

About his neck hangs the holy symbol of Mystra, 9 stars shooting across the sky. Also hanging from a leather strap about his neck is a ring of some worth, those who take the time to notice will see a hawk perched upon a sword that is embeded in an anvil.

Post Continued:

The threat of the murderous child Nathan Deville has been thwarted by a well-placed spell by Lady Sallavarian. Before he can recover, Baron Validar settles the issue permanently. The remains are then burned to prevent resurrection.

The next morning Jallarzi, Crysania and Serena all depart for Elcadan by way of magic. The rest of the group is to continue on towards Ansimont with the Duke and Duchess. The procession arrives in Ansimont just after noon. It is clear that none were expecting their arrival. There are no local lords or even men-at-arms to greet them. Just the regular citizens going about their business on this winter's day.

Ansimont is about twice as large as Pyris. Its primary industries are farming and textiles. Large spreads of farms cover the countryside. In town there are numerous warehouse, grain silos, and textile factories. The dominant feature in town is the Ansimont Forge. This huge dwarven forge is powered by the Streel River and is the finest forge in the kingdom. Numerous dwarves live in the vicinity of the forge and the locals refer to the area as Dwarf Town.

The citizens of Ansimont are a hard working bunch and can get rowdy at times. When there is a need, the locals will take up arms to deal with whatever problem has arisen. Given its location, on the eastern shore of the Streel, Ansimont has had little to fear from monsters and invaders. Wolf attacks are about the worst offenders in this area.

The buildings in town reflect the laid-back attitude of the locals. They are functional, but not fancy. There is nothing here to suggest that there even are any upper class individuals present. There are no castles, no fortified buildings, nothing that suggests wealth and power to you.

The Guardians passed through Ansimont weeks ago on their ride to Rennydale. They stayed at the Amber Waves Inn at that time. Sherwood did instruct all the mages to keep their magic concealed, as the town had dislike for spellcasters stemming from an incident some twenty years early. A mage had accidentally destroyed several buildings with a fireball.

A man in studded leather armor approaches the riders. He introduces himself as Regnak Strakeln, the scout that Lady Sallavarian arranged for. He exchanges words with Baron Validar and agrees to lead the procession to the farm of a Charles Ansimont, a respected elder in these parts. The Baron updates his father on what is transpiring.

“A sensible approach,” the Duke agrees. “And what you have told does fit with what I know. The Ansimont family is the founders of the town that bears their name. Undoubtedly, this Charles Ansimont is the Baron of this region. I know that there were other lords here long ago, but many left, as this is not the most exciting of places to live. They are a simple people whose lives are consumed by their farms. They care little for what transpires in the outside world.”

Rek leads the group to the south of town and towards a large farm. After leaving the main road, you travel along a dirt road alongside open fields and pens holding cows, horses, and other farmland creatures. There is no activity in the fields as this is winter, but near the main collection of buildings there is.

Finally you reach a series of houses and barns situated near each other. A young boy watches you approach. He tells you that Grandpa Charles is in one of the barns. Those who go to meet Charles finds that he and several other men are assisting in the birth of a calf.

“Something I can do for you folks?” Charles asks once aware of your presence. He’s an older man dressed plainly, but warmly. He’s splattered with calf afterbirth, so it does not present a picture of nobility to you.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Sherra:
At that moment, the murderous child feels Sherra move. He glances towards the dark-haired thief for a moment, focusing his attention away from the other Guardians. At that moment, the Lady Sallavarian steps forward and utters Power Word: Stun. Nathan reels from the spell, unable to form any coherent thoughts or even maintain his balance. He tumbles from Sherra’s arms and falls flat on the floor. The greenish glow from his hand fades away.
Trying to be subtle, the child still realizes she is no longer sleeping. Sherra freezes where she is and soon a word of power is uttered and she feels him topple from her arms. She opens her eyes and moves away quickly. Before long, Validar takes care of things with the business end of his sword.
"Yes, I am quite alright," Sherra responds. "Thank you. I am glad to learn you could have returned me from the dead if it had come to that, but I too am glad it didn't go quite that far."

A little later on, Sherra will approach Validar, "I apologize for putting not only myself, but all of us in quite some danger there. It appears I was lulled into quite an effective trap, which for me is somewhat ironic." she says the last with an easy smile before getting serious once more. "I have learned a very valuable lesson and will not fall for such trickery in the future."

The following day is much more relaxing, riding into Ansimont once more. They meet up with the scout, Regnak, as was expected. Sherra keeps a watchful eye on everyone while Validar talks with the man. She watches for anyone looking at them for too long or watching them from a shadowy or concealed place.

Sir Acerion:

Acerion nods grimly at Validar's quick and decisive action to terminate the demon-in-child's-clothing's life. Nothing that was said by that Deville would have been worth planning a strategy around and would only have run the risk of him facilitating an escape to hound us later. The body is later burned, but the paladin wonders if that is truly the end of him.

Acerion takes this time during the ride to offer further instruction to his squire, as well as check in with his beloved Ivy. He knows she was in low spirits and will see if she is faring any better with a new day. "How fare you, my lady?" he asks of her, "Was your sleep welcome and restful?"

Regnak will nod to each in turn, “Well met.”

"Well met, Regnak, Rek," Acerion corrects, as he returns the nod. He will concentrate on the man to see if he can detect the presence of any evil. He notices the holy symbol and sincerely doubts it, but there is no reason to make assumptions. With an appropriate nod, he will convey the findings to Validar.

Rek leads the group to the south of town and towards a large farm. After leaving the main road, you travel along a dirt road alongside open fields and pens holding cows, horses, and other farmland creatures. Acerion will concentrate on both the boy as well as Charles, sensing for any evil on them. Should there be any concerns, he will subtley alert Validar. Upon meeting Charles, the paladin is surprised a bit by the rather plain and hard-working appearance of the man, since he is understood to be the ruler around here. It is not a bad image, but not one he would expect, even in such a smaller and hard-working place such as this. He will remain quiet for now, allowing Validar to open discussion.

Baron Validar -

The situation with Nathan is resolved as best as they can. The body is disposed of and the group is ready to move on.

"We are all in danger at all times, with an enemy like the one we face still operational. No need for apologies. We all learned lessons this day and that will make us all the more effective in the future. Apologies are only necessary when mistakes lead to calamities. When mistakes lead to knowledge they are to be accepted for what they are."

--------------------------------------------
“Do not be so quick to judge these people. When the call comes many leave their farms and trades to defend their way of life. While they lack training they do not lack heart or the will. My uncle used to say men defending their homes and loved ones are more powerful than hired soldiers Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. Besides, They have done well this long.”

"So what you mean is that there is no standing miltia. And as for untrained men defending their homes, they may do so with ferocity and courage and may in fact be superior to a mercenary force, I can tell you that a well drilled military force that follows their leader is much more desirable to untrained civilians."

Rek gets a quizzical look as Baron Validar speaks of forming a militia. “But this is not Pyrisian land? How is it that you presume you may do as you say?” he asks clearly confused.

"There is more to the situation than is clearly apparent, Regnak of the Shooting Stars. I am Baron of Pyris, but I am also a Knight of the Order of the Griffon and have the ability to raise a militia anywhere in Cynalon where it is needed in defense of the people's homes. And I can assure you that I possess the skills necessary to carry out such a task as well."

"However, it must be made known that I operate in a military function under the rule of the new Duke of these lands, renamed the Duchy of the Streel, of which Pyris is now a part. Elcadan Duchy is no more. The new Duke, Relon, has authority here, by royal decree."

Once a local leader is determined to be about, Validar issues some commands and meets briefly with Duke Relon.

"Farming is a fine and necessary task, but the apparent lackof ambition leaves them all vulnerable to one possessing it," Validar says in response. "I will prepare them for your arrival and once the meeting is completed, will report back."

Regnak calls for his horse and the procession heads out towards the south where Regnak indicated this Charles Ansimont lives. It is better to get the troops out of the town and to a place where their mounted skills can be of use, should anything adverse happen.

The procession halts once they leave the main road and reach a dirt road alongside dormant fields.

"Indeed. Greetings Charles Ansimont, I am Baron Validar Vanarkus of Pyris," Validar responds. "There have been some changes in the Kingdom of late. Elcadan Duchy is no more and there is a new Duke, Relon, who rules the Duchy of the Streel. Relon is here with us and would request you to have an audience with him at your earliest convenience."

"The lands encompassing the Duchy of the Streel are in some turmoil due to the depravations of the Devilles. We are hunting them down at the command of the new king, Victor the VIIIth, and bringing stability to the region, which has long been lacking."

"I am told that you are the 'town elder' or perhaps the rightful baron of these lands. In any case, as leader of Ansimont, your presence is required by the Duke," Validar looks on at the scene of the birth. "... as soon as you have things under control here of course."

Small Update

Small Update:

The procession has reached Ansimont. The large group rides into town, much to the surprise of the normal citizenry. In short order they meet up with Rek, the scout acquired by Jallarzi. While introductions are made, Sir Acerion looks over the Ranger of Mystra and finds no evil in him.

While that is going on, Sherra keeps her eyes open anything unusual. After a time, she notices a man- must be male from his size and figure- watching the group from the shadows. He wears a hooded cloak that completely obscures his features. He’ll follow the group for a time, but does not advance any closer. He does not follow the group out of town.

While sitting on her horse, Lyonessa hears a voice call out. It is not calling out her name, but one she does know. “Myveria! What are you doing there? Myveria?”

The speaker is quickly spotted in the crowd. It is a plainly dressed man, but it is clear that he is not a farmer. He has the look of an adventurer and there is a dagger sheathed at his side. He gets a good look at Lyonessa and then seems to realize that she is not Myveria. The adventurer begins to move away, trying to blend in with the crowd.

Outside of town, the riders reach the Ansimont Farm. A boy leads them to Charles Ansimont, a sort of town elder and the man suspected of actually being the Baron of Ansimont. Sir Acerion scans those encountered along the way and not radiate evil.

Charles Ansimont is located in a barn, having just assisted in the birth of a calf. He is introduced to Baron Validar.
Baron Validar wrote:"Indeed. Greetings Charles Ansimont, I am Baron Validar Vanarkus of Pyris," Validar responds. "There have been some changes in the Kingdom of late. “I guess I better go clean up then,” Charles answers. After making sure things can be handled in his absence, Charles will make his way to the main house to clean up. “I’ll be back shortly.”

Now what?
Try it and find out!

"Wait," Lyonessa calls out as she turns her horse and heads towards the man. She looks over her shoulder to make sure someone sees her leaving the procession. It could be a trap, but she can't let the man slip away. Not yet.

"No wait, please," she calls out again, hoping to catch up to him. Lyonessa hopes to stay on horseback, but will dismount if she can't get through the crowd.

Argent

Argent:

Argent awakes early the next morning and quickly begins to study, to regain the spells she spent the day before. The Invoker then dresses in her black riding clothes with her cloak draped over her shoulders. The tiara rests on her head and her staff is in her hands.

It seems that there was a great deal of excitement the night before as the boy Sherra rescued was really an assassin. He was stopped and destroyed before any harm could come.

Jallarzi says her goodbyes and Argent will give her mentor a hug before she teleports away with Crysania and Serena.

The ride to Ansimont passes quickly and we reach the town by midday. However, it is not what Argent was expecting.

“What a dull place!” The Invoker complains. “It doesn’t look like there are any decent shops to visit!”

The scout that Jallarzi arranged for turns up, a follower of Mystra named Rek. He leads the group out of town towards one of the outlaying farms. Validar and Acerion go forth to meet someone. Argent just remains on her horse, looking bored.

“I know I shouldn’t complain after yesterday, but I’m almost wishing that something interesting would happen!”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Ivy

Ivy:

Ivy misses the episode with the Deville child and she’s probably better off that way. Yesterday was horrific enough without having seen a murderous child and how he was dealt with. After saying her morning prayers and restoring her spells, Ivy dresses and leaves her room. After finding out about what happened, Ivy will seek out Sherra.

“Are you all right?” Ivy tentatively asks. “I am very sorry for what happened to you yesterday. Anyone could see just how attached to the child you were. When and if you are ever ready to have a child in your life, there are many wonderful kids at the orphanage. In fact, I know one that would suit your temperament perfectly. If you wish to talk about it, I’d be happy to listen.
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion takes this time during the ride to offer further instruction to his squire, as well as check in with his beloved Ivy. He knows she was in low spirits and will see if she is faring any better with a new day. "How fare you, my lady?" he asks of her, "Was your sleep welcome and restful?"
“I am always happy in your presence, my love,” Ivy answers with a smile. “My rest was not as good as I hoped for. The pain of what we witnessed yesterday will plague my dreams for quite some time. But nonetheless, we must press on. Those responsible for what transpired must be punished for their evil deeds.”

The ride to Ansimont is short and pleasant. It’s pretty much just how she remembered it from their earlier visit. It’s also a somewhat special place to her.

“Do you remember what happened the last time we were here?” Ivy asks Acerion. Of course Ivy refers to what took place in the Amber Waves Inn where they first realized their attraction.

A man named Rek approaches the group and primarily speaks to the knights. Ivy is more content to listen. Then we’re riding out of town once more and towards a large farm. Ivy remains on horseback as the others go to speak with local lord or elder. Hopefully, this won’t take too long and we’ll be on our way to Elcadan soon. Regardless of how many see the city, it is still home.

Sir Corley

Sir Corley:

Sir Corley is in better spirits come the morning. The previous day and how it ended bothers him to no end. After dressing with the assistance of his squires, the knight is ready to continue the ride to Ansimont. The trip passes easily enough and we ride into Ansimont once more. After a time, the scout Lady Sallavarian arranged for us steps up.
Rek wrote:He steps before Sir Validar.
Baron Validar wrote:"This is but two squadrons of Pyrisian cavalry," Validar says indicating the mounted soldiers behind them. "But you are correct, you were hired to take several of our number across country towards Akorros. I am Baron Validar of Pyris. This is Sir Corley and Sir Acerion." Validar will give Sir Acerion a knowing nod so as to have him check the man for Evil.
“Well met,” Sir Corley responds with a nod when introduced.

From there, the scout leads us to a farm on the southern outskirts of town. It is the estate of the Ansimont family, the founders of the town. It is not a fortress, but rather a large farm. Baron Validar and Sir Acerion dismount to go and speak with the head of the estate.

“I’ll keep an eye on things out here,” Sir Corley states. He’ll ride his mount casually up and down the procession.

“Keep your eyes open for trouble,” he’ll tell his squires and the men at arms.

Regnak
“What a dull place!” The Invoker complains. “It doesn’t look like there are any decent shops to visit!”

While chewing on his blackroot, he hears this remark and looks to the women curiously. By the way she is dressed, she must be a noble or at least someone with taste. Chuckling to himself he couldn’t help but laugh. ‘A quall among chickens.’ he thinks to himself.
"So what you mean is that there is no standing miltia. And as for untrained men defending their homes, they may do so with ferocity and courage and may in fact be superior to a mercenary force, I can tell you that a well drilled military force that follows their leader is much more desirable to untrained civilians."
“Not much need for one. The river offers this town some protection. Here, the people work from sun up to sundown, so involved in their work as it were.”

Steadying his gaze upon the Baron, he is mildly surprised by what has transpired; obviously he has been within the wood for too long. “Clearly, much has changed,” he simply says then quietly to himself, “To what end remains to be seen.”

As he settles upon his horse and waits for Sir Acerion and Baron Validar to speak with the elder, Rek slowly scans the area as well as the group. His brow wrinkles in confusion. “Many are found, one is lost,” he says to no one in particular. Kicking the sides of his mount forward he canters his horse towards a redheaded women wrapped in a heavy coat. The Invoker then dresses in her black riding clothes with her cloak draped over her shoulders. The tiara rests on her head and her staff is in her hands.

“A follower of Azrella, are you not?” He asks curiously gazing upon her holy symbol. Turning his gaze upon the well-jeweled woman, “Wait do not tell me, I have a gift for such things: You are betrothed to Baron Validar? A noble lady perhaps?” And recalling a young man with staff within hand that rode alongside, “And the robed man, is he your servant?” he asks innocently.

Seeing at least one of their number missing, Rek speaks up, “Is there one missing amongst you?” he asks as he looks around the area for the women he saw through the others, recalling she had a harp, “A minstrel perhaps?”

(Rek is not trying to be rude. He merely did not see all of those to propery introduce himself or greet them.)
Seek and you shall find answers.

Argent watches as the scout rides along introducing himself. His comments bring a chuckle from her lips.

“I fear your gifts have left you this day, friend. Do you really think that the Baron’s betrothed would be on horseback and not in the carriage?” Argent gestures towards the carriage holding the Duchess and Lady Gabriella.

“But you are half right. I am the Lady Argent, an Invoker of no small power. My companion is Lord Chareos, a mage and swordsman of some skill.”

Mulling about in Ansimont...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

The group seems in good spirits overall as they arrive in Ansimont. Validar is confident in the members that they will take care of watching out for each other. The town, while bigger than Pyris, is not much to see for some of the group.

“What a dull place!” The Invoker complains. “It doesn’t look like there are any decent shops to visit!”

"This place is lacking in many things one would expect for a town this size, Validar says, indicating the lack of a fortress, defenses or any military presence whatsoever.

Validar enters a dsicussion with Regnak about the defenses of the town.

"That may well be the case when considering the enemy hordes of humanoids who have raided into Cynalon lands. And from the eastern side of the Streel, the area is fairly well protected. However, I can tell you that a new invasion at Corunglain was only barely thwarted just recently."

"Had Corunglain fell, the enemy would be rampagind southward even now, especially if all towns took the same attitude towards their defense. It was nearly a tragedy of epic proportions."

"Even discounting our defense of the northern border, it is still possible for a unsuspecting town to be at the mercy of our enemy. We have witnessed a horrible tragedy at Wrasseldown, which could have been enacted here as well, had we not driven the interlopers away. The thought that this area is untouchable is one we must change. And an increased involvement in the Duchy will be necessary to enact all the changes that must be done."

Steadying his gaze upon the Baron, he is mildly surprised by what has transpired; obviously he has been within the wood for too long. “Clearly, much has changed,” he simply says then quietly to himself, “To what end remains to be seen.”

If Validar heard the last part, he makes no obvious indication. "Much has indeed changed and much more change is to come. We are committed to restoring Cynalon to her former glory and seek to defeat all foes, both external and internal."

A knowing look from Sir Acerion indicates that Jallarzi's selection of a scout, Regnak Strakeln, is clean of any evil taint. Satisfied, Validar allows the scout to take them to the local elder, Charles Ansimont.

"We do not appear to be in a place which would welcome an attack or ambush, but considering all that has transpired of late, it is good to be on guard at all times," Validar says to his fellow knight. "We cannot be too careful with the importance of this journey."

"I am told that you are the 'town elder' or perhaps the rightful baron of these lands. In any case, as leader of Ansimont, your presence is required by the Duke," Validar looks on at the scene of the birth. "... as soon as you have things under control here of course."

“I guess I better go clean up then,” Charles answers. After making sure things can be handled in his absence, Charles will make his way to the main house to clean up. “I’ll be back shortly.”

"Very well," Validar answers. "We will be awaiting your presence outside. There is much to discuss, not the least of which is the protection of your territory, in light of the sitution in Wrasseldown, as well as the overall transition for the Duchy to the new Duke and Duchess."

As Charles departs to the main house to prepare for his audience with the Duke, Validar will return to the smaller group outside and inform the Duke that Charles of Ansimont will meet with him soon. The distance back to the carriages and soldiers is too great to cover before Charles returns. Therefore, Validar will have his squires send a message there.

"Flint, Sara, ride back tot he carriages and inform Sir Belfor that the Duke is meeting with Charles Ansimont. Once their meeting is over, we shall be returning to the town for the evening. We will need to make arrangements for the night for as many as possible."

Validar will ride part of the way back with them, just to be sure. Then when Charles is spotted emerging from his house, the baron will return to the meeting.

The Baron's Henchmen...

Po -

Po gets instructions to let the rest of the Guardians know that they are heading to meet the local lord. As he relays this information, he sees the bardess Lyonessa move away from the group, following someone. Concerned that no one else has noticed her, Po will follow Lyonessa into the crowd, to keep an eye on her.

If she does dismount, Po will collect her mount and call out to the closest Guardian to come and assist him.

Sara Ebonov and Flint Jordana (Squires to the Baron) -
Sara and Flint are given the task of disposing of the dead enemy, Nathan Deville. Sara notices that Flint is a bit reviled by the task, as this Nathan is in the form of a young boy. "We do what we must," she says sternly to her fellow squire. "Certainly a man such as Baron Validar would not deceive us in such a vile manner," she chastises.

"I am sure you are correct," Flint agrees finally. Together, under the watchful eye of their mentor, they have the body wrapped in a blanket and then commandeer a squad of cavalry to take the body outside of town. There they cover the blanket and body beneath it in oil and set it ablaze. Tinder is added to the fire and despite the horrid smell, both squires do not waver from the task. Flint's only concession is to cover his nose and mouth with the end of his cloak.

When the fire has gone out and there is nothing left of the body, save a bile of ash, Sara looks to the baron. His response is but a nod in their direction. "Collect the remains," Sara orders to the soldiers, "and scatter them about the area."

Flint chimes in at this point with a thought of his own. "Better for each man to take a potion of the ashes and each scatter them in different directions. If what we are told is true, we must be as careful as possible to prevent this man's return." The soldiers do as they are told and it is unlikely that Nathan's remains could ever be reassembled again.

Once in Ansimont, the squires are also dispatched to enact orders of Baron Validar. Sara has the Pyrisian soldiers accompany the entire group to the south and the meeting with Charles of Ansimont. She is quite surprised and dismayed that the town is so mundane and there is no apparent military structure, nor any obvious hierarchy of nobility. A very odd place, Sara is ready to do her duty, but she is ready to move on and learn some things of import.

Flint is sent to inform Sir Belfor, his father, of the situation and he takes his task seriously, saluting the knight and acting with all seriousness to his station.

Flint and Sara ride behind the Baron, along with his herald and standard-bearer Dellant, and Po, (assuming that Lyonessa was not separated from the group). Before long, they are sent back to the carriages, once more to inform Sir Belfor of the pending meeting. The Baron is taking extreme precautions with everyone's safety and the squires take their duties seriously. The stand guard, one at either end of the carriage, Sir Belfor nearby as well. Both squires have their swords at the ready.
