Elfquest #20

The elves have located the cottage from Laucian’s vision. The House Medallion is supposed to be in this location. However, with the fountain from yesterday having been far more than meets the eye, Sherwood has the group scout the cottage out before moving closer. Most of the group stands watch, or circles the cottage in the woods, looking to see what they can.

Laucian casts Detect Evil and finds none in the surrounding area.

The stone statues that resemble Moorkroft’s troops in the front yard are not magical.

Valena sends Aerie forth to speak to the other birds in the area.

Kylie casts Fly and Improved Invisibility and hovers over the cottage keeping watch.

Lilia casts several spells upon herself, allowing her to see invisibly things, reflect gaze attacks, and to change into the form of a bird. She then flies forth, lands on one of the flower boxes at the cottage’s windows, and peers inside.

The occupant of the cottage can be located by the sound of her humming the melodies of the songbirds. Lilia spots the tenant after a few moments. It’s a middle aged woman, but one that has aged very gracefully. Her brownish hair has started to gray and her style of dress is a plain peasant dress. The woman appears to be going about her usual housework. She does not have snakes for hair, like is typical for a medusa. Nothing invisible is noted.

After a few minutes of surveillance, the woman approaches the window where Lilia is watching. The woman smiles upon seeing the bird and begins to speak to it!

“Why hello, there little one. I don’t recall seeing you around here before.”

The woman observes Lilia for a moment with a penetrating gaze, but one that does her no harm. Realization comes to the woman’s face.

“I see what is going on now. I welcome you to my humble cottage in the woods. Go get your friends and we’ll have a nice lunch, shall we? I’m sure that you’re tired from your long journey.”

Aerie returns and reports to Valena. The songbirds have nothing but praise for the woman who lives in the cottage. She is kind, feeds them, and keeps them from any harm.

Lilia returns to the group reports what she’s observed.

Now what?

Lilia:

Lilia lands on the flower box in the form of a bird and observes what is happening inside the cottage.
The occupant of the cottage can be located by the sound of her humming the melodies of the songbirds. Lilia spots the tenant after a few moments. It's a middle aged woman, but one that has aged very gracefully.

"Why hello, there little one. I don't recall seeing you around here before."

The woman observes Lilia for a moment with a penetrating gaze, but one that does her no harm. Realization comes to the woman's face.

"I see what is going on now. I welcome you to my humble cottage in the woods. Go get your friends and we'll have a nice lunch, shall we? I'm sure that you're tired from your long journey."
Lilia is mildly surprises that it is not a medusa. Of course it could be using magic to disguise itself, so it might still be malevolent. Then the woman approaches and starts talking to her! She gazes at Lilia and somehow relaxes that she’s far more than she appears. Then she asks that I fetch the others for lunch!

Very confused and feeling more than a little afraid, Lilia files off and will land by the others off in the woods. She takes the form of a sylph to speak.

“This is very strange! There’s a woman in there, but she doesn’t seem to be a medusa. She somehow knew that I was polymorphed and asked me to bring you all back for lunch! I do not know who or what this woman is, but she is clearly far more than she appears!”

Lilia is unsure just how to proceed from here and makes not suggestions.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Kylie:

Watching from overhead, Kylie keeps an eye on Lila in her bird form. At first nothing appears to occur, then she hears a woman talking to Lilia. Floating down closer to the house, Kylie can make out words. Whoever is speaking seems to accept Lilia as a bird, then realizes that she is not what she appears. Still, no attempt is made to harm Lilia, so Kylie keeps her distance, following the bird back to the others.
Lilia wrote:“This is very strange! There’s a woman in there, but she doesn’t seem to be a medusa. She somehow knew that I was polymorphed and asked me to bring you all back for lunch! I do not know who or what this woman is, but she is clearly far more than she appears!”
Kylie's voice comes out of the air not far from Lilia. "I have to agree that she seemed pleasant enough. However, we also know that appearances can be deceiving, especially with regard to these medallions. At the very least, we should be careful that she doesn't try to turn us into lunch.

"I would suggest that most of us comply with her request. Accept the invitation and join her for lunch. Be wary, but polite. I can stay invisible for quite a while yet, so I should probably stay in reserve. It might be a good idea to leave one other person in reserve, just in case she does prove to be a threat. Laucian might be a good choice."

Valena:
Aerie returns and reports to Valena. The songbirds have nothing but praise for the woman who lives in the cottage. She is kind, feeds them, and keeps them from any harm.
Valena listens to Aerie as her friend reports what the songbirds told her.

“The songbirds have nothing bad to say about the woman who lives in the cottage. They say she is kind to them, feeds them, and protects them from any who would do them harm. It seems that there is no danger here for us.”

After a moment’s thought, Valena adds “Perhaps she is a forest spirit, much like the water spirit we encountered earlier?”

Sherwood:

Sherwood observes the cottage as Lilia and Kylie go forth to examine it closer. Valena has her avian companion go speak with the songbirds singing in the trees. Everyone reports their findings after a few minutes.
Valena wrote:“The songbirds have nothing bad to say about the woman who lives in the cottage. They say she is kind to them, feeds them, and protects them from any who would do them harm. It seems that there is no danger here for us.”

After a moment’s thought, Valena adds “Perhaps she is a forest spirit, much like the water spirit we encountered earlier?”
“Perhaps”, Sherwood offers. “They do seem to be content here. That much can be noted by simple observation.”

The girls report is also of great interest.
Lilia wrote:“This is very strange! There’s a woman in there, but she doesn’t seem to be a medusa. She somehow knew that I was polymorphed and asked me to bring you all back for lunch! I do not know who or what this woman is, but she is clearly far more than she appears!”

“Maybe Valena is on to something here. While your group had to fight and work to recover the medallions you gained, we didn’t have as much difficulty. The guardians of the Eagle, Narwhale, and Nymph medallion were peaceful towards us and wished us no ill will. Perhaps the occupant of the cottage falls into that category?”

“It’s clear that she’s more than what she appears to be if she can sense our presence out here. Likewise, to guard the medallion she would have to be powerful, so that part fits. I say, let’s take her up on her offer. We won’t get any closer to gaining the medallion standing out here talking. Just be on guard. If anyone wants to stay here, you may do so.”

Turning around, Sherwood will casually walk up to the cottage, eager to see just who or what the being living here is.

Laucian

Casting his Detect evil, Laucian studies the area, within the range. Soon enough he realizes that no such entities are present.

“There is no evil presence here, though we should not let our guard down.” He says quietly to Sherwood as he awaits the arrivals of the others.

“If she is a forest spirit then perhaps she may also know where the keepers may reside?” he asked curiously.

Turning his gaze to Kylie, “I would rather go. My bow would be of little use out here if trouble arose inside, Unless someone stepped to the window for a shot also there is no evil here.”

Laucian will go with Sherwood toward the cottage, he will ask the cooshees to stay, while Onyx come with him.

Nariya:

"I agree we should be cautious," Nariya adds her say into the discussion, "but it is a good sign that there is no presence of evil and the animals seem content."

From what little Nariya knows of such things, most animals would be loathe to linger around something evil, especially the more skittish ones. She will join Sherwood in heading up to the cottage but remain alert for danger.

A smirk crosses the invisible girl's face. Somehow, she's not surprised, though it will make it hard for the girls to talk about him...

The others begin to move toward the cottage. "I'm going to float a little higher, so I can get a good view of the house," Kylie says to Talen and Lia as she drifts upwards 10 or 15 feet.

Post Continued:

The elves have found that an older normal looking woman inhabits the cottage from Laucian’s vision. But this woman could determine that Lilia was polymorphed just by looking at her! The woman then asks Lilia and her companions to join her for lunch.

Rejoining the others back out in the woods, Lilia reveals what she’s seen the invitation that was given. After some discussion, most of the group agrees to go to the cottage while Lia, Talen, and Kylie remain behind.

Sherwood leads the way through the gate and down the path to the cottage. Before reaching the door, it opens and the woman Lilia spoke with is there.

“Welcome to my home”, the woman says with a wide smile. She seems ordinary enough, appearing to be a human woman in her fifties you’d guess. “Please come in. You can call me Jewel.”

The inside of the cottage is pleasant enough. The furniture is functional, but nothing of any great value. The place as a nice ‘homey’ feel to it.

Jewel leads you into her dinning area. The table has already been prepared. There are bowls of fruits, some vegetables, and nuts. There are decanters of water, mead and fermented honey to be had for drinks.

Upon seeing Onyx, Jewel will say, “Oh, how precious! It’s been ages since I’ve seen a cat!”

Onyx allows himself to be picked up and petted by Jewel. “Let me get you some nice milk. Please sit and enjoy. I’ll be right back.”

True to her word, Jewel returns a few minutes later and onyx has a plate of milk to consume. The food and drink all seem real and tastes good. Jewel will sit and nibble as well.

“So what brings you travelers to my home deep in the woods? It’s been a long time since I had any visitors.”

The others do not notice anything out of place or suspect from the outside.

Now what?

Kylie:

Kylie watches their companions enter the cottage from her position floating invisibly over the heads of the siblings. Minutes pass, and nothing unusual seems to happen.

"Everything seems fine in the cottage, as best I can tell," she says. This could prove to be a long wait.

"So, Lia, you have any entertaining stories to tell about your brother?" Kylie asks with a cheery voice. "Might help pass the time while we wait." And it never hurts to torment the lone boy in the group...

“Well meet Jewel, I am Laucian Nailo of Clan Grundalf.”

Jewel leads you into her dinning area. The table has already been prepared. There are bowls of fruits, some vegetables, and nuts. There are decanters of water, mead and fermented honey to be had for drinks.

Laucian looks upon the table noticing it was already set. How quickly can one gather and set up a table such as this, he wondered curiously.
Upon seeing Onyx, Jewel will say, “Oh, how precious! It’s been ages since I’ve seen a cat!”

Onyx allows himself to be picked up and petted by Jewel. “Let me get you some nice milk. Please sit and enjoy. I’ll be right back.”
“His name is Onyx, and has been a friend for a time. Rescued him from an Orc horde who were using him as amusement.” He said evenly as he watched her pick up the cat.

“So what brings you travelers to my home deep in the woods? It’s been a long time since I had any visitors.”
Quietly he wonders if she has seen any elves lighty, many of the others spoke of it but yet she had not. Laucian refrains from eating relying on his ring for safety, he has no reason to trust this women yet. “I received a vision of this cottage, in which there was something of value left here. A medallion.”

“Those are odd statues you hold within your garden, Where did you acquire them? How is it that you came to live out her all by yourself?” It seemed odd that a women with little skill of the woods would live out her by herself.

We’re escorted to the dinning area that seems to have already been set up with standard elfin fare. Sherwood takes a seat while Jewel fawns over Onyx. The conversation soon gets serious.

The Elf Maiden follows the others up to the cottage. The woman who spoke to Lilia earlier opens the door and greets us. Sherwood introduces us.

“Hello,” Lilia says with a nod upon being introduced.

The spread inside is impressive. Lilia is drawn to the fragrance of the fermented honey, as it is one of her favor elfin drinks. Lilia eats sparingly, nibbling lightly on some of the fruit. Talk soon turns serious and between Sherwood and Laucian, any questions that Lilia would have asked are spoken. Lilia is content to wait and hear the answers.

Valena trots behind the others as they approach the cottage. She’s confident that there is no danger here, based on how the animals are behaving.

“Pleased to meet you, Jewel,” Valena will say upon being introduced. “Nice place you have here.”

Valena follows the others to the table and will take a seat. The fermented honey is appealing, but she’ll settle for water instead. Some fruits and nuts are nibbled on. Valena mostly listens as the conversation unfolds. It’s clear that this Jewel loves animals of all types, be it birds or felines. She must also be favorable to the elves to be here.

Those thoughts swirl around Valena’s head until something clicks in her mind. In wide-eyed surprise, Valena looks at Jewel. Could it really be her? It does fit the facts, but Valena is almost afraid to even voice her suspicions for fear of being wrong.

Inside the cottage in the woods, the explorers have met Jewel. She’s set out a nice spread for lunch and seems friendly enough. Conversation follows.
“Hello, Jewel,” Sherwood offers when the door opens. “I am Sherwood and these are my companions, Laucian, Nariya, Lilia, and Valena.”
“Welcome all,” Jewel answers. “Please come in and make yourselves at home. Won’t your friends be joining us?”

Jewel fawns over Onyx.
Laucian wrote:“His name is Onyx, and has been a friend for a time. Rescued him from an Orc horde who were using him as amusement.” He said evenly as he watched her pick up the cat.
“A very fitting name,” Jewel answers as she strokes Onyx’s fur. “And very fortunate that you saved him when you did. Orcs are such savage beasts!”
Laucian wrote:Quietly he wonders if she has seen any elves lately, many of the others spoke of it but yet she had not. “A medallion like this?” Jewel pulls out the medallion. It is on a chain and was around her neck the whole time, concealed by her clothing.

“I know of the medallions and was asked by the elves to guard this one for them until the time was right. When you have earned the other eleven medallions, then I will give you this one.” Jewel takes the medallion and replaces it back under her blouse. “You’ve made very good progress thus far having gained six of the medallions. Just five more to be found before I can give you the final one. But for now, you are safe here and can relax from your search. Your friends should really come in and enjoy the food.”
Laucian wrote:“Those are odd statues you hold within your garden, Where did you acquire them? How is it that you came to live out her all by yourself?” It seemed odd that a woman with little skill of the woods would live out her by herself.
“Scarecrows”, Jewel simply answers. “They keep away the undesirables from my home. Fear not, they were shaped from stone and were not soldiers turned into stone.”
Valena wrote:Those thoughts swirl around Valena’s head until something clicks in her mind. In wide-eyed surprise, Valena looks at Jewel. Could it really be her? It does fit the facts, but Valena is almost afraid to even voice her suspicions for fear of being wrong.
While Valena stares at Jewel, the older woman glances back at her for a moment, winks, and then looks away once more.

Outside the cottage, the half-elves are keeping watch. The cooshee’s seem restless as if they want to go inside the cottage. It’s taking considerable effort to hold them back.

Lia looks about, but cannot find any tree with a white X marked on it.

Just five more to be found before I can give you the final one. But for now, you are safe here and can relax from your search. Your friends should really come in and enjoy the food.”

That makes things so much easier, Nariya thinks. Hopefully there aren't any other medallions that have such requirements. It looks like they will have to figure out the centaur issue sooner rather than later now.

Sherwood:
“A medallion like this?” Jewel pulls out the medallion. It is on a chain and was around her neck the whole time, concealed by her clothing.
“Yes, exactly like that,” Sherwood responds in surprise.

“I see,” Sherwood says, leaning back in his chair. The elves who concealed these medallions were certainly varied in their methods of hiding them.

“If you already know that we have six of the medallions, then perhaps you have information that you can share about the others? One of the medallions is in the possession of the roc to the west. We have the medallion the roc requires us to have to gain his, so all we need to do is go there and claim it. We believe the Justice Medallion to be to the south of here. To gain the Centaur Medallion, we must rescue a young centaur from Moorkroft. Furthermore we believe that Moorkroft currently possesses the Hydra and Nymph medallions as well. That just leaves the House Medallion currently in your possession. Is that true?”

“Is there any thing you can tell us about the other tests we face? What do you know about this Moorkroft?”

Lilia:

Lilia continues to nibble and listen to the conversation as it progress. Jewel reveals that the elves asked her to guard the House Medallion and will only give it up to someone who has the other eleven. That gives Lilia pause. We had already guessed that this woman was not really human this just confirms it. But what is she in actuality?

Sherwood continues to question the woman and Lilia sees no need to add anything else. She’ll continue to listen to what is said.

Valena:

Valena finds herself staring at Jewel as a thought crosses her mind as to the true identity of this person. Jewel reveals that she guards the medallion we seek at the elves request. Clearly she cannot be human as this was centuries ago!
While Valena stares at Jewel, the older woman glances back at her for a moment, winks, and then looks away once more.
“EEPPP!” Valena involuntarily utters in shock. Could she know what Valena was thinking? Was that a confirmation of Valena’s suspicions?

“Be quiet and don’t make a fool of yourself,” Valena tells herself, forcing herself to look away.

Talen:

Talen continues to keep watch. All is quiet after Lia goes off to the other side of the cottage. Then Talen notices that the cooshee’s seem to want to get closer to the cottage!

“Kylie! The cooshee’s are acting like they want to go in there! I doubt I could hold them back!”

Laucian

Laucian quietly listens as Jewel begins to speak of the happenings about her house as well as the medallions. Bringing his hand to his face he merely watches and listens to the women’s words and replies.

Can see through disguises, affinity with animals, can stone shape solid rock, the intolerance of Orcs, and not to mention knowing how many medallions we do have. Laucian refrains from outright speaking his mind and takes a handful of nuts. “I will get them, My Lady..” not wanting to complete the sentence but does bow slightly, his right hand accidentally brushing his unicorn symbol. If it is indeed her, the Elves chose wisely in choosing her to protect it.

Rising up from the table Laucian will go to the door and motion for the others to come in, “Come, All is well.” He says evenly as he reaches the doorway.

Coming back to the table, Laucian listens to Sherwood’s words and awaits Jewels response

Lia

Moving about the trees Lia looks for the elusive white marked trees. Spotting none in sight Lia heads back to the others as Laucian calls them forward. “Come, All is well.” Looking to Kylie, Talen then the cooshee. “There is nothing out here, we might as well join the others.” She says evenly as she let’s the cooshee that befriended her go and heads toward the house.

Before Kylie can continue her response to Talen, Laucian appears at the door to the cottage. She cannot make out his words from this distance, but his gesture seems clear enough.

"You may be right, though I think we should remain wary. Hopefully, the cooshees will warn us of any danger in time to react."

Letting her invisibility spell lapse, Kylie floats down near the ground. "Let's go, Dapple," she says before following the great canine to the house.

Joining the others inside, Kylie finds a seat. "Hello. I'm Kylie Cortheledran Lanthorn," she says with a curtsy to the mysterious woman.

Nariya remains quiet for now. She is most curious to see what Jewel says to Sherwood's questions. Her eyes follow Laucian as he steps outside to call the rest of our group up to the cottage, but otherwise she just sits there.

Post Continued:

The meeting with Jewel continues. The mystery woman reveals that she guards the House Medallion, but will only give it up to those who possess the other eleven. At Jewel’s request, Laucian summons the half-elves and the cooshee’s to enter the cottage.

Jewel greets the newcomers at the door. “Welcome, children,” the older woman intones. “Please come in and help yourself to the food and drink.”

She greets each of the cooshees and they all seem very eager to be around her. She’ll pet and play with each of them and tell them that they are good dogs. Once seated back at the table, the cooshee’s gather near Jewel.

Talk turns back to the medallions.
Sherwood wrote:“If you already know that we have six of the medallions, then perhaps you have information that you can share about the others? One of the medallions is in the possession of the roc to the west. We have the medallion the roc requires us to have to gain his, so all we need to do is go there and claim it. Furthermore we believe that Moorkroft currently possesses the Hydra and Nymph medallions as well. That just leaves the House Medallion currently in your possession. Is that true?”

“Is there any thing you can tell us about the other tests we face? What do you know about this Moorkroft?”
“That does sum things up correctly,” Jewel answers. “The Justice Medallion is indeed to the south of here near the top of a small hill. To gain this medallion you have to pass a test of intellect. The others will have to be gained in the methods you spoke of. It would be in bad form to try and take the Centaur Medallion by force The centaurs have endured much hardship at Moorkroft’s hands.”

Jewel glances briefly at Lilia as she speaks.

“Moorkroft is a vile sorcerer who hates elves for their longevity. He allied himself with many orc clans forming an army that invaded the Sylvan Realm so that he could capture elves to learn their secrets. But the elves were gone when the armies arrived. Moorkroft feared that the orcs would destroy important clues in his quest, and so ordered the orcs to remain outside the Realm while searched for immortality. In time he discovered that the souls of some elves had been placed into trees. He drained those he found of their vitality to extend his own lifespan.”

“By doing so, Moorkroft became more and more elfin in appearance. He became what he hated and that just drive him mad. It also meant that he could not be seen by the orcs, so he had to use him human warriors as intermediaries. Moorkroft took up residence in the elfin palace and remains there to this day. He hates elves and he hates himself. That rage can be used against him. Any battle with Moorkroft will be nasty.”

“Once you have the other eleven medallions, I’ll meet you at the platform so that they can be put into place. Once that is done, the Mother Tree will return and you’ll have to heal her with the energy Corellon gave you. Then the Mother Tree will be able to bring back the elves slumbering in the trees and she can restore the Rainbow Bridge releasing those held captive inside.”

“But you’ll have no time to celebrate as Moorkroft’s armies will no doubt be on the march by then. You have come far, but the road before you is long.”

Nariya:

Nariya takes note of the cooshees' reaction to Jewel. There is definitely nothing to fear from this mysterious woman. For the first time since arriving, Nariya partakes of some drink and a little food.

She listens to Jewel's answers to Sherwood's question, confirming her suspicion to not make the centaurs their enemy. She also speaks a lot about Moorkroft. So he is indeed quite mad.

Nariya wonders just exactly how Jewel knows so much, and guesses she isn't revealing everything. She missed catching some of the subtle things that were occuring between some of the others, so remains oblivious, chalking everything up to more magic once again.

Laucian

As the others begint o come in Laucian skeptically wonders about the words, Human’s would not few elf’s as children, unless children of the forest which only cements his thoughts. There was much more to this women then met the eye.

Curiously Jewel brings up the issue of Moorkroft, his hatred as well as his parasite tendencies towards elves. Considering this Laucian asks, “ Would you know of anything of Moorkoft’s forces he keeps close. These men for instance do they leave regularly or sit upon their arse.”

Entering the House, Lia looks about and smiles at the homely and comforting surroundings. “Thank you, Miss.” Taking a place at the table and nibbling on the food offered.
She eyes the cooshee oddly as all of them sit about Jewel. “I never seen them act in such a way. One or two would look after us but all after one.” She says in surprise.

Unaware of what has transpired nor what was asked, lia will enjoy what little time they have within the house.

To Save Mother Tree!

Kylie:

The woman in the cottage addresses them as "children", which doesn't entirely please Kylie. Still, the cooshees seem quite happy with this woman - whoever she may be. Kylie will have a small meal from the food available, though keeps a careful eye on their host and the surroundings.
Jewel wrote:“That does sum things up correctly,” Jewel answers.
It is good to hear that the Justice Medallion is where they believed it to be. The injunction against robbing the centaurs fits with Kylie's thoughts on the matter, so it needs no comment.

Jewel tells them of Moorcroft's history and current situation. It's rather ironic that he has become what he hates. Fitting, somehow.
Jewel wrote:“Once you have the other eleven medallions, I’ll meet you at the platform so that they can be put into place. Once that is done, the Mother Tree will return and you’ll have to heal her with the energy Corellon gave you. Then the Mother Tree will be able to bring back the elves slumbering in the trees and she can restore the Rainbow Bridge releasing those held captive inside.”
This information peaks Kylie's interest. They can free those within the Rainbow Bridge! "Please, ma'am, do you know who yet remains alive within the bridge?! My-- my mother is one of those sent here and seems never to have arrived..." Kylie is nearly quivering with her need to know.

Sherwood:

Sherwood listens to Jewel’s explanation very closely. This is a good omen in his mind. Clearly she is very powerful and very knowledgeable, and yet obviously limited somehow. A few choices come to mind, but Sherwood is polite enough to not voice his suspicions as to what Jewel really is.

“Thank you for this information, Jewel. It is very helpful.”

Turning to the others, Sherwood adds, “It seems that we continue on as planned. The main group travels south to the Justice Medallion while I go back and retrieve the barge. Once we have the Justice Medallion, then we get the Eagle Medallion from the Roc.”

“Then retrieving the two in the possession of Moorkroft is next, along with rescuing the centaur foal. That gains us the Centaur Medallion and that just leaves the last one Jewel possess. With the twelve medallions we can release the Mother Tree.”

“I doubt any of that will be as simple as it sounds. We have a choice right now. We should be able to reach the Justice Medallion before nightfall. Or we can stay here for the evening. What do you think?”
