Crucible #9 - "After the Bubble Bursts"
The weird affect that covered Downtown San Diego has nearly run its course. For the most part the normal flow of time has been restored, except for the occasional temporal disturbance. Now people are picking up the pieces after what happened and trying to imagine the sheer scope of what has transpired...
Gingerly rising to his feet, Green Steel sees the odd collection of beings chatting but ignores them for the moment. The man in camouflage he saw fighting against the villains when this whole nutty incident started. If he's not getting into it with any of the others, then they must be okay.
Close by, Green Steel notices the inert form of Black Steel. The onboard computer that links all members of the Steel Squadron shows that the rest of the team is offline. He heads to the sprawled body of Black Steel and upon reaching him, grabs the ebon figure and shakes him. He stops and looks at him intently for a few moments and then lets him lay back down.
"Holy spit. Ace is dead," he says quietly.
Not too far away from there lies the remains of what appears to be Red Steels crimson colored armor. However, the man himself seems to be nowhere in sight. Everything happened so fast and Green lost track of the teams' muscle man during all the fighting. The man in the armor doesn't appear to be anywhere around.
Spotting Grey Steel off in the distance, Green activates his flight pack and covers the distance to Grey Steel. His teammate is motionless, as if a statue or his joints have been frozen. As Green Steel lands, he reaches out to his armored comrade.
"At least you're in one piece. What's the matter, Grey? Something fuse your armor..?"
As Green Steel touches his grey armored friend, to his utter amazement, Grey Steel seems to shatter and fall apart in his hands. Under his helmet, Green Steel's eyes go wide for a moment as the armor for Grey Steel collapses into pieces.
Green Steel steps back from the remains of his comrade and looks on in amazement. Then he realizes that he is still holding part of the arm of Grey Steel's armor. He quickly drops it, as if it were red hot. Green looks around, wondering just what is going on and whatever became of Blue and Red Steel.
Back in the main summoning area, Flux mentions that the area should be evacuated in the wake of the black skinned man simply vanishing. Goldstar misunderstands his intent. She increases her own density becoming much stronger. Then she picks up Flux and Frostbite and flies off with the two surprised men!
Flux finds it slightly uncomfortable being this close to Frostbite. The intense cold generated by the icy man seems to be slowly sapping his strength. A short-term exposure wouldn't be bad, but in the long run it could be nasty.
In a complete contradiction to that, Goldstar is nice and toasty to the touch. The gold-skinned woman seems completely unaffected by being in physical contact with Frostbite.
Once up in the sky, they spot Major Star flying off with a limp form in his arms. The Major's flight is extremely fast and Goldstar knows that she can't match his pace. Instead, they spot the local Silver Avenger near the wreckage of the flying saucer. Close by is what appears to be a lizard with golden fur and a humongous spit ball. Goldstar is directed to land there and does so.
Back inside the plaza, Lily and Serena continue to walk along, leaving Gargoyle behind. As they draw nearer to the summoning area they can't help but see Green Steel's incident with Gray Steel. (You can do more here if you want to. Your call.)
Continuing on, the pair reaches the nearly deserted summoning area. Lily happily spots her bags right where she dropped them. A few items spilled out onto the floor, but every does seem to be there.
Serena scans the immediate vicinity in search of the purple monster. No such critter seems to be in the area. However, there are several beings that do attract her attention. Yet another demon is present, but this one is mysteriously imprisoned in a pillar of metal.
Close by is the unconscious form of a large man with red tinted skin. He detects as malevolent to Serena's senses. Laying unconscious in the middle of the summoning area is a man in black with shocking white hair. He likewise radiates evil and maliciousness.
However, the worst comes form a large figure also in black with green skin. The evil radiating from this being is almost demonic in nature. It's startling to find such strong evil in one not from the lower planes.
A misty cloud in the background attracts Serena's attention. She can sense someone inside it, someone whose aura does have much good in it.

Goldstar the Hostess
Goldstar:
“Oh,” Goldstar says sheepishly when she is corrected about just who needed to be evacuated. “I misunderstood you.”
Bearing the weight of the two men is no problem for Goldstar with her augmented strength. They are both as light as a feather. Even the frosty mans icy touch isn’t enough to harm Goldstar.
Unfortunately, her other passenger can’t say the same! “Are you okay? You don’t look right?”
Seeing Major Star go flying off I say that I can’t keep up with is rate of flight. “He’s too fast for me in the atmosphere. Get us up in space and it’ll be a different story!”
Instead, I am directed to land back at the saucer wreckage near that other nice man in the red, white, and blue outfit. The furry lizard and the icky looking liquid blob are still there as well.
“Hi!”, I call out as we near the ground. No need to tell them that I’m Goldstar since they already know that. Once on the ground, I release my passengers and shift my density back to normal.
Realizing that my newest acquaintances have yet to meet the other beings, I hastily make introductions. “These are some beings I met just a short while ago. This here is the Silver Avenger. The furry lizard answers to IT and the blob is Yu. They’re all nice. Serena said so!”
Goldstar will stand back and see what develops from here.

Serena continues on with her quest to assist Lily. As we move along the deserted corridors we spy a man in green armor standing before another man in grey armor. The aura of the man in green has some good to it, but not as much as Serena would have expected from a fellow knight. Strangely enough, she gets no reading from the grey knight.
“There are very colorful knights here in this land,” Serena comments.
Much to her surprise, the grey knight shatters into hundreds of pieces at the green knights touch. Serena has seen many strange things in her time, but this has to be near the top of the list! Knowing that the power to restore the grey knight is well beyond her meager abilities, Serena does not make the offer to try and heal him. This is something for a far more powerful healer to attempt.
Should Lily wish to stop and speak to the green knight we shall do so, otherwise continue on.
The passageway opens up once more and Lily finds her bags. Serena’s hand immediately goes to Blessed Salvation and the holy weapon is drawn once more.
“Be on guard, comrade. There is much evil here. I can almost taste it in the very air.”
Looking around, Serena finds several evil men in the air. The worst is yet another demon, mysteriously imprisoned in a pillar of metal. Serena has no idea how that occurred, but doesn’t let that bother her. The demon is unconscious and yet remains here. Strange.
Typically such foul creatures are sent back to their pits upon being defeated. Yet this is the second demon Serena has encountered since arriving in this place that has not done this. Only two possible explanations come to the knights’ mind. Either these are only half-demons with human parentage or some new diabolic breed. Both prospects are troubling.
While Lily gathers her belongings, Serena continues to examine the evil men present. She finds them all unfamiliar to her eyes. The one with green skin is most troubling as only demons out match his sheer malevolence! His mere presence is almost unnerving to the knight.
Then Serena senses something in a nearby bank of fog. Inside is the aura of someone who is strongly good. If Lily is in no danger, Serena will move closer to this strange fog bank.
Once close enough she’ll call out, “Are you all right in there? Do you need assistance?”

"Please don't, Miss. I don't think we would survive it! Land near the Silver Avenger instead."
Too late to keep myself out of the public eye now. Might as well face up to what comes next.
Goldstar lands us next to a Silver Avenger, a furry humanoid lizard, and a blob of shifting eyestalks and makes introductions of a sort.
Ok, suck it up soldier. You've seen worse and it's not their fault. Don't make it worse for them.

Goldstar explains it all!
Goldstar
“Who’s Serena?”, Goldstar parrots. “Why, she’s this super nice lady who came out of that pod over there. Goldstar points toward one of two groups of two pod-like devices. “She carries a big sword and is a knight of some kind. I came out of that pod right next to hers.”
Turning, Goldstar points to the other two pods. “Now the two who came out of those two pods were not nice at all! One was kitty-woman and the other was really windy.”
It and Yu were just here somewhere in the middle. I’m not sure where they come from. They were here when I got here.”
Goldstar thinks for a moment, trying to recall everything that transpired out here in the streets.
“Okay, there was this icky lizard-demon thingie over there that tried to attack the gray skinned troll. Serena whacked it around pretty good and that was that. There was some guy who was barking like a dog over there. A woman grew wings and screamed in a really loud and annoying voice before flying away.”
Goldstar suddenly turns and points to the unconscious Fire & Ice. Waves of ice and fire continue to alternate about his form. “He started to cause trouble and had to be stopped to. Then there was this dinosaur eating people a few blocks away. I think that’s about it.”
Another thought comes to Goldstar and she happily adds,” Oh and there were these guys with funny hats and ammo belts criss-crossing their chest who were shooting off guns. They weren’t nice either. That’s all that happened here.”
(Aren’t you glad you had Goldstar explain everything?)

Something went wrong and this wave of white energy rushed out in all directions. Things went really crazy after that, people changing and other weird stuff. The saucer exploded with the exception of four pod-like containers. Blondie here was inside one of them, along with another woman who called herself Serena. Other than that, we’re pretty much in the dark as to what really happened here as you are. Speaking of which, who are you anyway?”

After listening to Goldstar's recitation of events and the recap by SA Rackham, Flux exchanges a look of confusion with Frostbite.
With a slight shake of his head he recounts his own ( slightly) less insane perspective of events:
"Well, sir except for the saucer, pods, and lasers in the sky that's about what the end results were of the hostage situation further inside the Plaza. I witnessed five or six demonic looking people collecting sacrifices into a circle and casting a spell to summon a "Nether Lord". Something went very wrong and the explosive force affected a great many people outside the circle as well as within. Many were changed physically and emotionaly. "
"The Steel Squadron responded but they were affected too. Black Steel is dead, Gray stopped moving, and Red changed into an insanely strong beserker. I have an unstubstantiated statement that Blue changed into someone like Frostbite here and is staying away from contact with people."
"Green appears the same but was injured. There are others who helped with the many problems who may still be in the area. Please deal gently with them. It must have been quite the shock."
"I call myself Flux sir. I happened to be here when things started up and took a hand. I really don't make any claim to understand what I saw but that is what I observed. I can write down more detail if needed sir!"
Flux cannot help delivering this report with a clear precise voice. It is easily recognizable as a military style and coupled with his "at ease" stance markes him as service.
Sam is going to hit the roof! How will I break it to him without seeming like an idiot?
Oh, wait. He'll be seeing on t.v. before I ever get to say a word. Look at the news choppers going overhead! I'm doomed.
And there goes my idea that these other guys were aliens. I haven't been right about anything yet today.

Glancing over to the side as she walks through the now-empty mall, Lily spots Green Steel hovering over the form of his teammate, Grey Steel. That man looks familiar. I'm sure I've seen them on the news or something...
Just then, Grey Steel shatters into a million pieces. Lily gasps, and her hand goes to her mouth. She can see the pain in Green Steel's body language, so she steps over to the armor-clad man. "I'm sorry for your loss. May God bless your friend." Not knowing what else to say, she lays a comforting hand on the man's arm for a moment, then continues on.
Moments later, Lily spots her bags right where she must have dropped them when she fell unconscious. Somehow, after witnessing the demise of Grey Steel, she isn't as cheered by the find as she might have otherwise been. It has been a difficult day for many.
Taking a cursory look through her purchases, everything seems to still be there, and in reasonable condition. A quick scan of the area reveals no sign of the violet monster, and Serena wanders off. Following the strangely blessed woman and her advice, Lily avoids getting too close to the unconscious bodies strewn about. Stepping up to Serena's side, as much for comfort and protection as anything, Lily looks into the strange mist. Serena seems to be speaking to the cloud, though Lily is uncertain why.

“We heard some of the details over the police band. With the Steel Squadron responded to that emergency, we concentrated on the saucer threat. Obviously, no one was prepared for what did happen. I just hope the Stronghold Transports arrive before these defeated supers start coming around. We don’t need to have another go around with these clowns.”
“Military man, aye? It shows. We’ll deal with reports and eyewitness accounts later on. Right now there’s just too much to do. If the epicenter of the energy wave was out here and you felt its affects inside, then who knows just how wide spread this all was. I have the horrible feeling that the final numbers for this catastrophe are going to shock everyone.”
“In the meantime, stand by in case any new trouble erupts. We might need to call up your and your friends’ assistance once more. Right now, I need to keep this saucer wreckage secure for examination by our lab boys. Hopefully, we can find out who’s responsible for all of this.”

Goldstar on duty!
Goldstar:
“Aye, aye, sir!”, Goldstar responds while saluting with the wrong hand. “Goldstar stands ready to assist in whatever capacity your require! I sure hope I said that right.”
Goldstar will fly up about forty feet above the street and keep an eye out for any more trouble. Should she spot any, she’ll inform those down below before flying off to assist.
“Aye, aye, sir!”, Goldstar responds while saluting with the wrong hand. “Goldstar stands ready to assist in whatever capacity your require! I sure hope I said that right.”
Goldstar will fly up about forty feet above the street and keep an eye out for any more trouble. Should she spot any, she’ll inform those down below before flying off to assist.

Backtracking a bit…
Lily’s path takes us up to the green knight. This close I can plainly see the wounds in the mans chest. Lily says her piece.
“I know the pain of comrades falling in battle. It is an ache that never truly subsides. I do sympathize with your loss of a comrade in arms. I wish I had the power to restore him, but such is beyond my limited arts. However, I can at least heal your wounds. With your permission of course.”
Later, while Serena approaches the strange mist she becomes aware of Lily standing beside her. Casually, Serena explains the situation. “Among the many gifts I was given to combat evil was the ability to peer into and measure the quality of one’s soul. There is someone inside this cloud who is good of heart. I must determine if they are in need of assistance or not before we depart this strange market place.”

Listening to Serena's explanation, it sounds a little too like that new-age aura-reading stuff. Still, this has been a very strange day, and Lily is trying to keep an open mind. She reminds herself once again that superhumans are real, and have displayed an amazing variety of abilities over the years. Of course, she's never really met one before, so it's always seemed kind of separated from her life somehow.
"Ooookaaaay. So how do we help them? Do they seem to be able to hear you?"

As Goldstar grabs Me and The camoflauged man and wisks away into the sky the thought of how she does this cant help but to pop in my head. The excitement of flying with out a plane or helicopter is a little overwelming for me. "Kinda makes me feel like one of the Lost boys but without Tinkerbelle's fairy dust."
As she lands us near three individuals, one furry lizard thing,a blob with eyestalks and Silver avenger. I give them the once over trying not to stare the thought of What happened to me didnt seem so bad compared to these two. "Er, Hi"
When GoldstarSilver Avenger tells us what happened out here I mouth the word wow and holy moely. A real flying saucer you gotta be kidding I say under my breath.
Nodding in agreement with what flux says occasionally. "Some other things happened as well. There was this man in a blue jump suit. That didnt see this armed man with white hair. He had some kind of Curved knife or blade."
"You may call me Frostbite." As I speak the last word a sudden and unexplainable thing begins to occur. Without realizing it my skin color slowly returns to normal whitish tan. My hair begins to manifest back into my brownish hair. Standing before everyone is A 6ft hazel eyed,brown haired young man wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt.

Green Steel doesn't know what to make of the situation, having found his team leader dead, Red's armor shattered and no sign of the man and watching Grey Steel literally fall apart in his hands.
He looks around for the moment, keeping quiet, his mind racing through the future possibilities for him and the team.
Being used to the crowd's adulations and normlly trying to ignore them, Green Steel doesn't seem to respond much when any normals touch him or speak to him. However, when the woman in armor walks up, he takes a bit more interest in her words.
"Thanks for the offer, toots, but I don't think I'm gonna have time to do any recuperating. Not that I'd mind the attention, you understand. Any chance you've seen my blue armored companion around here?"
Green Steel sees the Silver Avenger not too far away and gives him a long hard look. Then he turns back to Serena, "Maybe that's not such a bad offer afterall."

Looking down at my hands in disbelief, " I think it happened by itself!" I begin to pat myself on my stomach,arms and chest to make sure its true. Tears of sheer joy begin to swell from my eyes, "I'm back to normal!" as I begin to jump around excitedly.
I cant help but wonder if it was some horrible dream. Or was it real.
