New Frontiers #95
The situation in Wrasseldown has grown graver. Serena relates that the wand Sir Corley and Lord Chareos discovered among the drow was powered by a living soul instead of magic. Each use of the wand drains the soul until it is completely spent and the soul is utterly and permanently destroyed. At Serena’s urging the wand is broken in half, freeing the imprisoned soul so that it may travel to its proper place in the afterlife.
South of town, riders are spotted approaching. Dusk telepathically alerts Lyonessa to this fact and Argent gets close enough to hear their words as she flies patrol. The riders are led to believe that it was Pyrisian forces that attacked Wrasseldown and that they are responsible for the destruction of the town. The riders’ commander sends one squad to alert the forces in Ansimont of the impending invasion, while the rest will return to High Guard.
In response, Baron Validar sends a unit of cavalry to intercept the riders heading towards Ansimont. The riders have a longer distance to travel than the cavalry, so they should be intercepted fairly easily. The Guardians will deal with the ones riding towards High Guard.
Argent is directed to Teleport ahead with Lyonessa in an attempt to slow the riders down while the rest of the Guardians give chase. The Invoker and the Songstress agree and Argent casts her spell. There is risk involved with the spell, as there is more darkness in the sky than light. The riders are only silhouettes far off in the distance. Are they 600 yards away or 900 yards? It’s almost impossible to tell under the current conditions. Argent casts the spell and she and Lyonessa vanish.
Word spreads across the city and most of the Guardians mount up and ride after the patrol. Yusef simply runs under his own power but will eventually be caught by the faster horses and passed.
Some 100 yards ahead of the fleeing patrol, Argent and Lyonessa wink into existence a few feet above the ground and then fall to the Earth. (It was only a short distance, so no damage was taken. The arrival point was lower then Argent expected.) The pair recovers from the teleportation and has a few moments to prepare for the patrol's arrival. What is Lyonessa going to say to them when they arrive?
GM Notes:
I have Baron Validar, Sir Corley, Yusef, Serena, and Crysania chasing after the patrol and are en route at the end of the post. Ivy remained in town while Sherra is with the child she found. The locations of Chareos and Acerion are unknown. Acerion’s Pegasus is the fastest animal here and he could easily catch up to the patrol.
Now what?

Now what?
Try it and find out!
Chareos
“What? What is it?” he asks concern and curiosity written across his face.
Hearing the cry for the Guardians to take up their reins and move forward to the intercept the fleeing forces, Chareos sees a group of Calvary move off without any Guardians which he finds odd… Surely there will be a fight if they intercept the other riders. Moving forward to his horse Chareos mounts up then has a thought…
Turning to one of the common soldiers, “You there, grab the body of a drow and drape it from the back of a mount.” While he is doing this Chareos will grab a body of the undead creatures (if left unburned) and do the same on the horse. Securing them tightly Chareos leaps into the saddle of his own mount, ‘Tell the Baron I went with the Calvary. With Calvary alone there will be a bloodbath. They will see with their own eyes what treachery happened here.” With one hand firmly on the burdened mount behind him he kicks his own mount forward. Thundering after the calvary, in hopes to catch them and speak with those riders sent to Ansimont.
Hearing her name called, Serena quickly makes her way to what Sir Acerion and Lord Chareos found. Spotting the wand, Serena steels herself and then reaches out and touches it. Then, as if it was a red hot, Serena drops the wand again.
“Mystra, no…” Serena weeps. “Such a vile use of magic is almost beyond imagining. What sort of monster could do such a thing?”
“What? What is it?” he asks concern and curiosity written across his face.
His eyes narrow as he hears the story of how such things are created. Whom indeed would make such a weapon binding souls to do their will. “Let us hope their souls will rest in peace,” he says reaching down, bracing himself for whatever he may feel as he picks up the wand. Taking his other hand upon the wand he will use his hands to snap the wand in half, hopefully releasing the tormented souls.Regaining her composure, Serena explains what is going on. “This wand is not a normal magic item. The fabrication of magic items is a very long and tedious process. A few have found short cuts to the process, but the price for using them is high. This wand was created by using such a short cut.”
“When I touched the wand, my mind was filled with the pitiful cries of a soul in torment. I had heard this about the drow before, but even so I am shocked that they would use it. Instead of using magic to power these wands, they took living souls and bound them into the wand. With each use of the wand, more of the soul inside is drained away until nothing remains. The wand must be destroyed so that what remains of the soul inside can be sent into the afterlife.”

To serve and protect those who cannot.
Acerion
Sir Acerion:
Acerion is finishing up speaking with Jocasta when word reaches him that riders have been seen.
"See, there is action still to be had," he says to his squire and they both join up with the rest of the Guardians that are present. Quickly the paladin is brought up to speed learning what Argent overheard. This does not bode well, he thinks grimly.
Word spreads across the city and most of the Guardians mount up and ride after the patrol. Yusef simply runs under his own power but will eventually be caught by the faster horses and passed.
"Do you want me to circle around in front of them?" Acerion asks Validar as he readies his pegasus. "I seriously doubt they would fire upon a paladin of Heironeous upon a pegasus, but if caution is to be considered, I could wait until the rest of you have caught up some."
Depending on what Validar prefers, Acerion will either fly overhead and land in front of the patrol, hailing them. Otherwise he will simply ride with the rest of them. Either way, he instructs Jocasta to get her horse and ride with the rest of the Guardians.

Pursuit is on...
Baron Validar -
"I have the means available to halt them if Argent can get me there and regular diplomacy fails," Lyonessa says to Validar.
“I can get us there, but there is a risk in teleporting blind. While the odds are not against us, it is possible to teleport in too low and we’d appear in solid rock and die instantly. If you don’t mind the risk, then I’ll cast the spell.”
"Do your best to use your flight to determine the best arrival location. I will leave the risk decision up to you however. If the risk is too great, then we shall deal with them in another matter. You are both far too important to risk needlessly," Validar cautions, seeing that it may not be as simple as he originally thought.
If Argent can teleport them both, Lyonessa will tell her, "I have magic that can sway a few people's emotions, but I would rather try to reason with them before resorting to a spell. If it should not go well, distract them to buy me a few moments so that I may cast the spell without them thinking I intend to assault them."
“That’s fine with me, Lyonessa. Most anything I cast would be in the form of an attack.”
Taking a hold of Lyonessa’s hand, Argent casts her spell and adds a few, hopefully not last words. “I’m going to aim a few feet above the ground so as to put the odds more into our favor. Here we go!”
"Be careful and remember that their emotions are likely to rule their decisions. It doesn't do any good to make the situation worse, but I do not expect diplomacy to accomplish much. Good luck on your attempt."
-------------------------
"They were not powerful compared to us, but obviously they would be very powerful when compared to a normal army, or against defenseless citizens such as once lived here. As you said, the effect of this attack where was truly devastating in every sense of the word. I trust you will get word of such abominations back to your temple."
“As soon as I can, Baron. You can rest assured of that.”
"It was a bit of a rhetorical statement, of course. My hope is that we are able to squelch this experiment fully."
Crysania’s story chills Ivy to the bone. She inadvertently shudders. “It seems that I’ve been confronted with two forms of undead that I’ve not heard of before this day.”
"Indeed. I dare say that I expect that we will learn much more about the vile and evil entities that oppose us, as we continue to progress. I would not be surprised to continue to learn of new kinds of opponents."
Validar does not interfere with Ivy's grilling of Yusef at first, imagining that her rant is more our of frustration that anything. However, Ivy's shouting seems to continue, perhaps with valid reason.
“But you knew who this Thelma was beforehand. You knew that she was a Necromancer. You knew about Abigail. This is all information you knew before we arrived in Wrasseldown. Why are we just learning about it after the fact?”
The priestess has a very good point. "Knowing about details, small though they may be and speculating about them is a world apart, Yusef. It would have been helpful to know this information, not that we would know they were here. We will need to find out what other information may be known that will help us."
Yusef looks at Ivy a moment later. "I thought I was on your side. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to me that my help is not wanted and that I will never be accepted among you."
“Don’t you dare turn this back on me”, Ivy responds with a glare. “You know the stakes here and you know more than all of us combined about the Deville’s and yet you failed to share that information with us. Your help was wanted and needed and you didn’t give it. This is only an issue because you didn’t trust us. So don’t even try to act like the wounded party. You wronged us, the people who had been trusting you.”
Having had enough of us this, Ivy walks off utterly frustrated over what has transpired.
Validar watches the Priestess of Azrella stalk off and decides it better to let her go. At this point, she needs to blow off steam and there is too much to do here to allow the argument to continue.
Validar turns back to Yusef. "Ivy may have been rather emotional in her response, but her point remains valid. We must have some discussions about what other information is available, little though it may be. Once we are completed here, we can continue this discussion in Jalarzzi's mansion."
"And might I add that while your customs and experiences may be quite different from the rest of us, a bit more respect should be given to others. Ivy is a follower of the patron of life. She has received a tremendous blow to her values and ideals and we all need to be understanding of each person. You have been trusted here; Lord Sherwood vouched for you and despite your heritage, I believe that the measure of a person is by their actions, not their birthright. Do not trivialize that simply because your feelings may be hurt." Validar is about to say more, but catches himself.
"We will continue this discussion on a more appropriate level once we have the town secured and our duties are done for this night."
“The exact number of daughters Eleanor had was open for conjecture,” Crysania states. “Having this intelligence earlier would not have changed what happened here in Wrasseldown, but it would have been good to know. One of the fundamental keys to any battle is intelligence about the enemy. The more that is known about them the better prepared we can be.”
Validar listens to Crysania's view of the situation and it mirrors his own. "Even insignificant details may prove important in the long run."
"Between them, they had around two-dozen children, of which my father is one. He in turn had a similar number of kids, mostly bastard slaves like myself. Others of his generation may have done likewise, so there may be hundreds of family members in total.
"Thelma's son Alexander is a fabled horror and feared even by the family. It may be he that stole Thelma's ability to feel emotions."
“This does not bode well,” Crysania notes. “We may be hunting down Deville’s for many years to come if this family is this large. At least we have identified the leaders of the family. It seems to me that Eleanor and her daughters are the ones we need to concern ourselves with first. They are most likely the most powerful.”
"Indeed it does not," Validar agrees. "And certainly the leaders are the most important to deal with initially. I agree with Crysania's assessment and we should set our plans to strike against them first and foremost."
---------------------------------
“Perhaps the magic of the ring did heal you, Sir Corley. But we should Neutralize the Poison just to be safe.”
“Better safe than sorry, I guess,” Sir Corley responds. “Invoke your magic when you are able, Lady Ivy.”
While Validar himself would not accept the healing unless under the more dire of circumstances, he agrees from a logical standpoint that it is a good decision. Clerics most definitely have their uses, regardless of personal beliefs.
------------------------------------
"Perhaps so," Validar responds. "It shall avail them not. We will stop these troops from their misguided intentions, or we shall adjust to the changing circumstances. It seems that they are desperate to stop us at all costs, but also that they were not so confident in their undead."
"And by delaying us, it also gives US more time to prepare."
“This was clearly planned,” Crysania states. “The timing of the arrival of these riders was no coincidence. If the initial plan to destroy us with the undead force failed, then the battle could be used to blame Pyris for the attack. Bad blood already exists between the two, so this would just make a bad situation worse. Demons exist only to cause chaos. We are witnessing this first hand.”
"It does not seem to be the case, although if they are truly chaotic, it may not be planned as fully as it could, and that is an advantage to us. Cynalon has seen enough chaos in recent years. We will bring order to her land, no matter who or what opposes us."
----------------------------------------
Running to her horse, Crysania mounts up and joins the chase. She’ll ride near Baron Validar and tell him, “I may be able to alter the moods of these men if I can get close to them. My divine powers of persuasion might be enough to stop this gross misunderstanding.”
"Very good. We will do our best to stop them. Then anything we can do to get them to listen to reason would be appreciated. This situation will be much worse if they manage to get away."
(A short note: Validar posted that he was heading north after the cavalry, not after the group Argent is intercepting. So I assume that Crysania and Validar's talk is as she is heading away.)
Validar will then direct any of the assembled Guardians to follow the group Argent is attempting to stop. "Serena," Validar will say when he locates her. "We may need your teleport abilities to cut them off as well. If we can keep the riders in sight, you and perhaps Ivy could be teleported out ahead of them to try and halt their flight." Validar will have the remainder of the Guardians available and the squires join him to try to chase down the group heading north.
“I will do what I can, Baron. But I do not see Ivy anywhere. Perhaps I should take Crysania instead?”
"Agreed, Serena of Mystra. She just informed me that she may be able to sway these men. Do what you can, but be careful."
(So at this point, Validar is travelling after the northern group with his cavalry, which is being also intercepted by Serena and maybe Crysania, but probably just Serena, as Crysania is already riding away. He will have his squires follow him and any other Guardians he may find, which seems to include Chareos for certain.)
"Do you want me to circle around in front of them?" Acerion asks Validar as he readies his pegasus. "I seriously doubt they would fire upon a paladin of Heironeous upon a pegasus, but if caution is to be considered, I could wait until the rest of you have caught up some."
"Yes, get ahead of them. Argent and Lyonessa should already be there, but your presence would be helpful. I do not consider them to be the threat. Our concern is the threat of what the towns will think and what they will do if they get away. Do not tarry!"
Validar sees Chareos rush off with a dead drow and an undead body on his horse. He finds it odd, but upon conclusion, he sees what the fighter-mage is looking to do. Validar will rush after the group pursued by the cavalry, along with his two squires. Surely they have enough riders to force the patrol to stop and listen to them. Validar will instruct his charges to follow him in a triangular formation to try and close off the riders once they are intercepted by the Pyrisian cavalry.

Conquer or Die!
Lyonessa:
"Be careful and remember that their emotions are likely to rule their decisions. It doesn't do any good to make the situation worse, but I do not expect diplomacy to accomplish much. Good luck on your attempt."
"Then I shall adjust my attempt accordingly," Lyonessa says. And then they are gone.
"oof," Lyonessa says as she hits the ground, "at least we're here." she tells Argent.
Getting up, Lyonessa remembers what Validar cautioned and she will cast her Emotion Control first, settling it as best she can on those who look like the leaders when they are in range of the spell, attempting to calm them, make them feel safe and in the presence of a friend.
When they appear, she will approach unarmed and with her holy symbol out. "Hail, good and brave soldiers," she will say. "I am Lyonessa, songstress of Mystra and things here are not as they may seem to be. Allow me to explain if you can spare but a moment." She hopes that the spell and her words have some effect or else she might have to be dodging out of the way of galloping horses!
________________________________________
ooc: i cant seem to find the exact description of the spell, only the notes on my character sheet about area of effect, casting time, and such. thats why im being vague with what lyonessa is trying to accomplish with her spell. she would know better what emotion she could hope to get out of them.

The arrival point was lower then Argent expected.) The pair recovers from the teleportation and has a few moments to prepare for the patrol's arrival. What is Lyonessa going to say to them when they arrive?
"oof," Lyonessa says as she hits the ground, "at least we're here." she tells Argent.
Getting up, Lyonessa remembers what Validar cautioned and she will cast her Emotion Control first, settling it as best she can on those who look like the leaders when they are in range of the spell, attempting to calm them, make them feel safe and in the presence of a friend.
When they appear, she will approach unarmed and with her holy symbol out. "Hail, good and brave soldiers," she will say. "I am Lyonessa, songstress of Mystra and things here are not as they may seem to be. Allow me to explain if you can spare but a moment." She hopes that the spell and her words have some effect or else she might have to be dodging out of the way of galloping horses!

ooc: i cant seem to find the exact description of the spell, only the notes on my character sheet about area of effect, casting time, and such. thats why im being vague with what lyonessa is trying to accomplish with her spell. she would know better what emotion she could hope to get out of them.
My voice, my will, my magic - three blessings bestowed by Mystra that spell your doom

I'm confused a bit. Did the meeting that Validar called with the Duke and others happen or not? It seems like it didn't because they were too busy, but responses are being posted to things that were to be stated in that meeting as though they were said elsewhere. Also, the Duke and others that would have been at that meeting haven't responded as far as I can tell.

Re: OOC
The meeting with the Duke has not yet happened. There has not been enough time to return to the Mansion Jallarzi set up. And yes, it seems some of the topics that were initially addressed there were continued on anyway.fanchergw wrote:I'm confused a bit. Conversations...
From what I can tell, there are two conversations that haven't taken place in regards to the scanning of Pyrisian people by Acerion (also including Serena) and Validar's initial explanation to the Duke of what happened, plusYusef's extra explanation of the Devilles.
All the actions taking place outside are obviously before the meeting in the mansion. The conversation with Yusef, Ivy and Validar is clearly before the Duke meeting, as it began when Validar addressed the assembled Guardians as the battle wound down and before they started to go about cleaning things up.
As for the one with Yusef telling things to the assembled group, I ignored it originally, since it wasn't happening yet, but ended up getting into it when Crysania responded to it. Got my conversations confused, since it was before other actions outside and was thinking that was part of the explanation Yusef was giving to the Guardians, not the Duke and the Guardians. However, little has been said that affects anything we're doing outside the mansion, so while confusing, it is not creating anything out of context.
We could agree to halt those two conversations for the moment. It appears one involves Validar, Acerion and Serena and the other Yusef, Crysania and Validar.
Fun with MBs.

Yusef:
Yusef decides to just wait out the rest of Ivy's rant. Perhaps he has indeed made a mistake in joining these exemplars of good. As far as he can tell, it just means screaming accusations at anyone who fails to live up to their expectations. He certainly never promised to live up to anyone's expectations, just to do the best he could. If that's not enough, so be it.

I've tried to leave off those things that I think should have happened in the later meeting, but I'm not sure I identified everything correctly. It seems to me that at least some of what Ivy said was based off things to come in that meeting.
Yusef head spins quickly to regard Crysania. "Wait a minute. Did you just say Krazzora? Thelma said that is a name that Abigail has chosen to call herself. Are you saying that Krazzora - Abigail - was involved in your fight in Corunglain? And she ruled over the drow there?"Crysania wrote:“That thought had crossed my mind as well, baron. I did note both Hextorites and drow during the assault on Corunglain, and again we find them here. This dark alliance is like a hydra with many heads. We find one head, but do not get a chance to strike at the body. I wonder if these drow here were ruled over by Krazzora?”
Yusef nods his head at Validar's reply. He can only hope they won't be too busy with these distractions to spend that time preparing.Validar wrote:"And by delaying us, it also gives US more time to prepare."
"As I said, it didn't seem that useful or valuable and nobody bothered to ask if I knew anything about my own family. Also, anything I could tell you is as much rumor as fact. This was the first time I had ever spoken with any of that generation of the family, and only recognised Thelma because she had been pointed out to me."Ivy wrote:“But you knew who this Thelma was beforehand. You knew that she was a Necromancer. You knew about Abigail. This is all information you knew before we arrived in Wrasseldown. Why are we just learning about it after the fact?”

"Though I have never seen it done, I could believe that my family would do such a thing. It is not outisde the bounds of what I have seen from them."Serena wrote:Regaining her composure, Serena explains what is going on. “This wand is not a normal magic item. The fabrication of magic items is a very long and tedious process. A few have found short-cuts to the process, but the price for using them is high.

Baron Validar -
“That thought had crossed my mind as well, baron. I did note both Hextorites and drow during the assault on Corunglain, and again we find them here. "If I recall correctly, Crysania indicated she was a priestess of Lolth. It seems the Devilles have managed to infiltrate many organizations and enemies. Our circle of opposition has expanded once more it seems."
“But you knew who this Thelma was beforehand. You knew that she was a Necromancer. You knew about Abigail. This is all information you knew before we arrived in Wrasseldown. Why are we just learning about it after the fact?”
"As I said, it didn't seem that useful or valuable and nobody bothered to ask if I knew anything about my own family. Also, anything I could tell you is as much rumor as fact. "While there may have not been facts, the expectations were that you would tell what you knew, little though it might be," Validar frowns. Yusef's comments do not sit particularly well with Validar, but his ambivalence is what bothers the Baron the most. This man's freedom and perhaps his life is dependent upon his cooperation. "Based on the circumstances, I would have expected you to be freer with your information."
The priestess has a very good point. "Knowing about details, small though they may be and speculating about them is a world apart, Yusef. It would have been helpful to know this information, not that we would know they were here. We will need to find out what other information may be known that will help us."

"Each individual bit of information may in fact be minimal or even worthless in and of itself. However, it is the culmination of all these small bits of seemingly insignificant details that start to create the understanding of tendencies, of patterns and personalities. Slowly they begin to show value, where there seemed to be none. And sometimes, it is that one final bit of information that is the most important to pull it all together."

"Ivy's actions are not at the cause of my comments to you, Yusef," Validar says calmly. "I will speak to her when appropriate. Respect can only be given; it cannot be taken. And Ivy is not here to defend herself, so my request stands."
"As for implications about your heritage and your family, allow me to be blunt, if I may," Validar says, again not raising his voice, nor making accusations. "The simple fact of the matter is that you have a demonic heritage and you are of the Deville family. Those are not small circumstances to overcome. You have been determined to not be evil in nature and you were recommended by Lord Sherwood. To me, you have to prove yourself, as anyone joining this group. I believe in judging a man by his actions."
"Some might take precautions against deception or beguile on your part against us, given the circumstances. To date, you have given us no reason to believe such is necessary. However, you must understand that the appearance of withholding information may prove to be damning in some people's eyes."
"I would imagine that you have faced prejudice before based on the circumstances of your birth. While we all have to an extent, yours is likely much stronger than others here in the Guardians. Perhaps that is why you have followed the teachings of the Wanderer. It is not for me to judge, but I can counsel that you are in the height of potential prejudice based on our circumstances. You have to have a thick skin. It is only natural to be worried when one amongst you has ties to the enemy. And this enemy is a very deadly one. We have seen what they are capable of doing and defeating them is vital to the safety of not only our lands, but perhaps the entire world."
"I was in a temporary position once with my old band the Seekers similar, if less intense, that you find yourself now. I was killed by the mad mage Wendelaine, daughter of the Zombie Master. I awoke several days later to find myself healed and my armor gleeming as if newly shined. When I caught up with my group, I was not trusted. There were implications of possible duplicity and outright distrust. When faced with such, you can either run, or hold your head above it. Knowing a little of Zhakarian culture thanks to my love, the Lady Allonica, I would guess that you have the means to also hold your head above the petty talk and careless words. But the choice on how you react to this situation is yours."

Yusef:
"Just what exactly does it take to prove myself? Tell me, so that I can get started on it now. Or is that impossible to achieve in your eyes?"
"That's all well and good to say now, but I had no way to read your mind and know what your expectations were at that time. And the fact remains that you didn't bother to ask, even knowing that I was a relative, so it cannot have been that important to you at the time."Validar wrote:"While there may have not been facts, the expectations were that you would tell what you knew, little though it might be," Validar frowns. "Okay. I know that now because you told me that now. I didn't know it then, and all the lectures in the world won't change the past."Validar wrote:"Each individual bit of information may in fact be minimal or even worthless in and of itself. Slowly they begin to show value, where there seemed to be none. And sometimes, it is that one final bit of information that is the most important to pull it all together."
"If that is true, then just how many actions do you need before you will consider me to have proven myself. I travelled in the company of Sherwood and several others on another mission before joining your company, and am unaware of any concerns regarding my performance or behavior on that trip - as I'm sure you're no doubt aware. I then travelled with your group to Fort Fletcher where I joined in the defense of that site against the armies of the Cold One. And afterward joined Lord Corley's crew in attacking the castle of her demonic servant to the north of the castle. In both cases, my life was in as great a jeopardy as anyone I served with. In this very altercation right here, I risked by life by engaging in combat with both the undead lord Baracus and my own great-aunt, both of whose power significantly exceeded my own.Validar wrote:"As for implications about your heritage and your family, allow me to be blunt, if I may," Validar says, again not raising his voice, nor making accusations. "In no way did I withhold information. The information was not requested, and I didn't bother to share what seemed to me trivialities, any more than you announce what you had for breakfast every day."Validar wrote:"Some might take precautions against deception or beguile on your part against us, given the circumstances. Hearing Validar's story, it amazes Yusef that the man is not more understanding of his situation. Perhaps that is the way of those who call themselves good. So far they don't impress him much, being - if anything - just as stubborn and self-righteous as those who follow the opposite path. "I held my tongue until now, so I don't really think I'm doing that badly, but we shall see how things progress."Validar wrote:"I was in a temporary position once with my old band the Seekers similar, if less intense, that you find yourself now. Stepping away from the others, Ivy seeks a place to regain her composure in private. The rubble of one of the collapsed buildings is smashed further apart with her mace. After a few hits, Ivy drops to her knees, the tears continuing to stream down her anguish-filled face.
It’s been a long time since she’s lost control like this. Certainly the last was before the calming influence of Acerion had entered her life. In an effort to regain control, Ivy begins to pray to the Blue Lady for her wisdom and guidance, shutting off the world around her.

While Lyonessa does her thing, Argent will cast Halo of Eyes to make her better aware of what is going on around her.
“If it’ll prevent a war, then it’s worth the risk,” Argent responds. “I’ll cast the spell in such a way as to put the odds more in my favor.”Baron Validar wrote:"Do your best to use your flight to determine the best arrival location. I will leave the risk decision up to you however. If the risk is too great, then we shall deal with them in another matter. You are both far too important to risk needlessly," Validar cautions, seeing that it may not be as simple as he originally thought.
“And not knee deep in the ground either,” Argent wryly comments. That teleport was lower than she intended, thus if she had aimed for the ground they would have appeared partially in it! No cause to alarm Lyonessa over that!Lyonessa wrote:"oof," Lyonessa says as she hits the ground, "at least we're here." she tells Argent.

Sir Corley
Sir Corley:
Sir Corley listens to the dialog between Baron Validar, Lady Ivy, and Yusef for a long time. Finally once Lady Ivy has departed, he finds that he can no longer contain himself.
“Friend Yusef,” Sir Corley says in an even tone, “It has become clear to me based on your rather cavalier attitude that you do not fully grasp the situation that you are in. The King has decreed that all Devilles are to be hunted down: imprisoned if possible, slain if necessary. To your credit you did present yourself to the King and sought his judgment. In response, he granted you the chance to earn your freedom by assisting the Baron in the task of dealing with your family. But make no mistake, you are not currently a freeman and will not be until you have assisted in accomplishing the task set before you by the King. As Nobles, it is our duty to see that you live up to your agreement or deal out punishment for any transgressions that occur along the way as we see fit.”
“You bemoan not being trusted. I would counter that trust is the only reason you are standing here today. Were Baron Validar not so forgiving, he could have you imprisoned or executed on the spot for your failure to be forthright with us about the composition of your family. Were it me and if my freedom, if my life were on the line I would have provided any details I could have thought of without any coaxing.”
“I trust that we are now clear on the situation as it stands?”
Sir Corley rides hard after the group to the south of town. He can see Sir Acerion pass overhead on his Pegasus and hopes that he’ll be able to assist the ladies who used magic to move further head.

Crysania:
“Yes, Krazzora was the drow matron who was allied with Ember, Dek, and that vile witch Xanathom! What it means is not only have the Devilles interfered with Cynalon, but also they are allied with those evils that dwell underground. They are also partially responsible for the attack on Corunglain. As I said before, they are attempting to cause chaos and suffering everywhere they can. This evil must be extinguished and quickly for the good of all!”

Serena has just related the evil magic used to create the wands the drow attackers wielded.
“Amen to that,” Serena agrees and will say a prayer for the pour unfortunate soul treated this way. May they find the peace they deserve.Chareos wrote:His eyes narrow as he hears the story of how such things are created. Who indeed would make such a weapon binding souls to do their will? “Let us hope their souls will rest in peace,” he says reaching down, bracing himself for whatever he may feel as he picks up the wand. Taking his other hand upon the wand he will use his hands to snap the wand in half, hopefully releasing the tormented souls.
“Always am, Baron.”Baron Validar wrote:"Agreed, Serena of Mystra. She just informed me that she might be able to sway these men. Do what you can, but be careful."

The Guardians stay in Wrasseldown continues…
At Serena’s urging, Chareos picks up the wand with the imprisoned soul inside. A heartbreaking wail fills his mind from the tormented soul. The wand easily snaps in two, and the pitiful cries fades as the soul is released to travel to the afterlife.
With the spotting of a group of riders outside of town who are under the impression that the forces of Pyris are responsible for the attack on Wrasseldown, the Guardians and cavalry accompanying them are sent to intercept them before they can report these false accusations to the nearby towns.
One group lead by Baron Validar himself rides to stop those trying to reach Ansimont. He is accompanied by cavalry and his squires. A few moments behind that group, Chareos follows with a second horse holding the bodies of a drow and one of the undead.
The trained riders easily make up the distance to the unit trying to reach Ansimont. The cavalry quickly blocks the riders approach long enough for Baron Validar to speak to them.
(What’s Validar going to say to them? Chareos is about 2 rnds behind him with the horse carrying the bodies.)
To the south of town Argent teleported Lyonessa safely ahead of the retreating riders. The two appeared some 100 yards head of that group, giving them time to prepare. Argent casts Halo of Eyes and a crown of eyes appears around her head. These enchanted orbs allow her to see clearly in all directions up to a distance of 60 yards.
Lyonessa awaits the riders and casts Emotion Control on the one with the heaviest armor, figuring him to the be leader. The spell is cast and she attempts to stir feelings of friendship in the man.
“Do not listen to her!” The woman who Argent heard speak before calls out. Thanks to her magic, Argent can see that the woman is dressed as a simple peasant, but is extraordinarily beautiful.
“She’s using magic to sway your thoughts!” The peasant woman continues. “She is evil. She must be destroyed! You’ve seen what she’s done!”
In response to this, some of the riders go for their weapons, while the leader seems more confused.
While that is going on, Sir Acerion wings in on his Pegasus landing beside Lyonessa and Argent. Some of the riders seem in awe of Acerion’s majestic mount and openly question how one with such an indisputably good mount could be part of something as evil as what transpired in Wrasseldown.
“You pathetic, weak-minded fools!” The peasant woman cries out in frustration. “I’ll destroy them myself!”
With that pronouncement, the peasant woman begins to cast a spell…

The spell seems to have worked, as the leader of the patrol slows his mount and urges the others to do the same. “A follower of Mystra?” He muses aloud. “They are generally trustworthy.”When they appear, she will approach unarmed and with her holy symbol out.

Conversations...
Baron Validar -
With Yusef:
"That's all well and good to say now, but I had no way to read your mind and know what your expectations were at that time. And the fact remains that you didn't bother to ask, even knowing that I was a relative, so it cannot have been that important to you at the time."
Validar frowns at Yusef's comments. "The meeting we had was to share ALL information we had about demons and the Devilles. Your silence implied a lack of knowledge. And you are correct, I will not make such an error in judgement again," Validar states. This will be rectified at the later meeting.
"Okay. I know that now because you told me that now. I didn't know it then, and all the lectures in the world won't change the past."
"My lecture is about the future, clearly, not the past. I simply explained why this information is important, so that you are aware of what is expected. So please direct your focus there. And as I said before, I would recommend changing your attitude as well as your repeated accusations towards members of the Guardians." Validar remains calm, but it should be clear by his words that continuing this conversation is not a wise course. "Your repeated weak defense of previous actions will only cause more scrutiny for your actions in the future."
In this very altercation right here, I risked by life by engaging in combat with both the undead lord Baracus and my own great-aunt, both of whose power significantly exceeded my own.
"Just what exactly does it take to prove myself? Tell me, so that I can get started on it now. Or is that impossible to achieve in your eyes?"
"Your past endeavors with the Guardians are well known. However, in the here and now, we deal with an enemy that is wide-spread, has shown a willful desire to destroy Cynalon, is willing to stop at nothing including wholescale genocide to achieve their vile goals and is cunning and dangerous with an unknown layer of allies and subordinates. And you have a more-than-passing connection to them."
"Knowing that you are not of an evil nature does not discount the potential possibility of duplicity and deceit. Only a naive fool would dare to say such a thing. So what will it take for you to prove yourself? That is unfortunately very simple and yet very difficult as well. You have to remain above reproach for the duration of this action. While that may take months or years, there is no other alternative. Clearly you can grasp the magnitude of this situation and the direness with which I must complete my mission. My people's protection and well-being are my first and primary duty."
"Some might take precautions against deception or beguile on your part against us, given the circumstances. To date, you have given us no reason to believe such is necessary. However, you must understand that the appearance of withholding information may prove to be damning in some people's eyes."
"In no way did I withhold information. The information was not requested, and I didn't bother to share what seemed to me trivialities, any more than you announce what you had for breakfast every day."
"Since you mentioned me lecturing you," Validar responds, "allow me to lecture you once more. Your words and your defense for silence can be construed as simply semantics. The implication was that we were sharing what we knew. Your lack of response as well as your comments at another time to me were met with the understanding that you had no knowledge. Yet that was not the case. Suddenly you offer it without prodding. Why now and not then?" Validar pauses for a moment. "I am telling you now and for the future that information, no matter how slight, is desired and needed. And we will address that unfortunate oversight later this evening."
"I held my tongue until now, so I don't really think I'm doing that badly, but we shall see how things progress."
Validar is about to comment, when Sir Corley, who has been listening to the conversation steps in.
Corley has summed up the situation quite accurately, so there is little for the Baron to add. Yusef seems to be willing to put himself at risk simply based on some odd personal feelings, Validar thinks. He clearly does not understand why Yusef put himself at the King's mercy, agreed to comply with the King's wishes and then seek to impede or at least not assist when expected. And then to complain about how he is treated? Validar will be giving this situation some serious thought this evening.

Conquer or Die!
Chasing down the riders...
Baron Validar -
"If I recall correctly, Crysania indicated she was a priestess of Lolth. It seems the Devilles have managed to infiltrate many organizations and enemies. Our circle of opposition has expanded once more it seems."
Those words definitely get Crysania’s attention!
"You are correct, Crysania of Heironeous. This matter goes far beyond the struggle between Elcadan and Pyris and the rest of Cynalon that Elcadan bullied about. This is about the continued safety of all of Cynalon as well as many realms beyond. There can be no quarter and no mercy for these enemies."
"Indeed it does not," Validar agrees. "And certainly the leaders are the most important to deal with initially. I agree with Crysania's assessment and we should set our plans to strike against them first and foremost."
“I fear the hard part will be getting them to sit still long enough for us to deal a final and lasting blow. Their innate means of movement will frustrate us to no end!”
"That is true. We will have to be cunning and well-prepared. Some further talks about ways to trap these individuals will be needed."
"It does not seem to be the case, although if they are truly chaotic, it may not be planned as fully as it could, and that is an advantage to us. Cynalon has seen enough chaos in recent years. We will bring order to her land, no matter who or what opposes us."
“Make no mistake, demons can be a cunning strategist. Where their failing lies is that they will abandon a stratagem early if they feel it is going to fail and rarely have a backup plan in place. It is then that they can be easily dealt with.”
"That was indeed my point, Crysania," Validar says with a brief smile.
-----------------------------------------
"Do your best to use your flight to determine the best arrival location. I will leave the risk decision up to you however. If the risk is too great, then we shall deal with them in another matter. You are both far too important to risk needlessly," Validar cautions, seeing that it may not be as simple as he originally thought.
“If it’ll prevent a war, then it’s worth the risk,” Argent responds. “I’ll cast the spell in such a way as to put the odds more in my favor.”
"Very well. Good luck." With that, the pair winks out of sight.
"Very good. We will do our best to stop them. Then anything we can do to get them to listen to reason would be appreciated. This situation will be much worse if they manage to get away."
“You’ve never heard me deliver a sermon before, Baron. I can be most persuasive.”
Validar only smiles a wry smile in response. While the situation is desperate, he is also very confident in their ability to halt it before it becomes a desperate matter.
With most of the Guardians heading south and the cavalry riding to intercept the small group riding towards Ansimont, Validar follows the cavalry, with his two squires following behind.
Thanks to the quick response of Argent and Lyonessa, they are prepared and able to circumvent the riders seeking to get away. Validar takes the direct route and joins the Pyrisian cavalry just before they halt the progress of the Elcadan riders.
With their numerical advantage, the riders are forced to not only halt their progress, but halt completely, having been encircled loosely. Validar rides forward, motioning his squires to remain in the circle of cavalry. Moving forward, he unsheaths his sword and salutes the men, keeping the adamantite blade available, but not poised to strike.
"I am Baron Validar of Pyris. Who is the commanding officer of this group?"
"It has been brought to my attention that some among you have been wrongly convinced that Pyrisian soldiers are responsible for the massacre here. There is nothing further from the truth. This destruction was caused by members of the Deville family which has been deposed in Elcadan and has done nothing but harm the land that was entrusted to them."
"The Devilles consort with demons, with drow. They are the enemies of Cynalon and we are here to oppose them. Not to harm the citizens of Elcadan. We are all citizens of Cynalon and work for her good and the good of the new King. My father, the previous baron of Pyris, has been pronounced as the new Duke of these lands. Why would we slaughter our own people. Pyris and Elcadan are now part of the same and enemies no more. But there are enemies about. Enemies that are vile and cunning and seek to destroy us all. That is why we are here. That is why we fight. We fight for your lands, not against them. We are all part of the new Duchy of the Streel."
"There is no invasion force. Look around you. There are no infantry, no encampments. The number of troops here could not have accomplished the tragedy that has taken place. We have fought drow and demons and vile undead. That is who the enemy here is. If our goal was complete devastation, then why are you alive now? We could strike you down in short order, rather than explain ourselves."
"In moments, you will see evidence of what I say. There are dead bodies about of drow and of the undead that the people of Wrasseldown have been transformed into. My comrade approaches carrying examples of such."
Once Charoes arrives and assuming there are not more statements to make or questions of the riders to further answer, Validar will point to the horse Chareos brings. "As you can see, this is the enemy. Drow. Undead." Validar lets those statements sink in. He realizes that he is not dealing with the leaders of the group, likely a sergant or lieutenant at most. "We are escorting the Duke to Ansimont and then on to Elcadan city. Come with me."
Validar will indicate to his cavalry commander to have the Elcadan riders split up individually for the ride back to the other group. However, their weapons will not be taken, at this time, if they comply.
"If I recall correctly, Crysania indicated she was a priestess of Lolth. It seems the Devilles have managed to infiltrate many organizations and enemies. Our circle of opposition has expanded once more it seems."

Acerion
Sir Acerion:
Sir Corley rides hard after the group to the south of town. He can see Sir Acerion pass overhead on his Pegasus and hopes that he’ll be able to assist the ladies who used magic to move further head.
Acerion nods to Corley and then spurs his pegasus on faster, hoping to reach the ladies in time.
While that is going on, Sir Acerion wings in on his Pegasus landing beside Lyonessa and Argent. Some of the riders seem in awe of Acerion’s majestic mount and openly question how one with such an indisputably good mount could be part of something as evil as what transpired in Wrasseldown.
Seeing that Lyonessa and Argent have halted the progress of the men lightens the paladin's grim mood. Dismounting, he concentrates on the assembled riders, trying to detect evil.
"I am Sir Acerion Kalindor, paladin of Heironeous," Acerion calls out. "Whatever these ladies have been telling you is absolutely true and I request you wait long enough for us to show you proof and tell the tale in full."
“You pathetic, weak-minded fools!” The peasant woman cries out in frustration. “I’ll destroy them myself!”
With that pronouncement, the peasant woman begins to cast a spell…
Depending on whether Acerion detects any evil or just notices the peasant's words, he calls out, pointing, "Beware! You have a witch among you!"
Acerion will either close the gap and try to grapple the woman so she can hopefully not cast her spell. If there isn't time, he will move as close as he can and block the woman's sight of Lyonessa and Argent in case the spell requires such.

Argent
Argent:
Argent casts her Halo spell and eyes surround her head, allowing her to see in all directions and clearly in the dark. She can see the riders drawing closer and Lyonessa working her own brand of subtle magic. Overhead Sir Acerion approaches on his Pegasus. Argent is content to listen as Lyonessa speaks to the riders.
“You can try, demoness!” Argent calls out. She’ll cast Magic Missile at her in the hopes that her expertise with that spell will give her the edge in quickness.
Argent will look back at Baron Validar with mild surprise showing on her face. “Why my dear baron, I thought you didn’t believe in luck,” she says with a sly smile before teleporting away.Baron Validar wrote:"Very well. Good luck." With that, the pair winks out of sight.

“That’s the one who put the blame on us,” Argent says quietly to her companions so only they can hear. “Very attractive for a mere peasant woman.”The spell seems to have worked, as the leader of the patrol slows his mount and urges the others to do the same. “A follower of Mystra?” He muses aloud. “They are generally trustworthy.”
“Do not listen to her!” The woman who Argent heard speak before calls out. Thanks to her magic, Argent can see that the woman is dressed as a simple peasant, but is extraordinarily beautiful.
That last bit just confirms in Argent’s mind that this woman is yet another demoness in disguise. Crysania did say that they are quick to drop a plan if it seems ready to fail and that’s just what she’s done.“She’s using magic to sway your thoughts!” The peasant woman continues. “She is evil. She must be destroyed! You’ve seen what she’s done!”
In response to this, some of the riders go for their weapons, while the leader seems more confused.

Sir Corley
Sir Corley:
Corley sees Sir Acerion pass overhead and seemingly reach the ladies ahead of the riders. He is, however, too far away to see or hear what is happening. Sir Corley continues to ride hard and hopes to reach the others before it is too late.

We fight for King and Country!
Crysania
Crysania:
Crysania rides along with the others as they try to reach the Songstress before anything bad can happen.
“Yes, that seems to be correct. This dark alliance has thrown many enemies our way. The Hextorites, the orcs, and now the Drow. They will pay a heavy price for their actions!”Baron Validar wrote:"You are correct, Crysania of Heironeous. This matter goes far beyond the struggle between Elcadan and Pyris and the rest of Cynalon that Elcadan bullied about. This is about the continued safety of all of Cynalon as well as many realms beyond. There can be no quarter and no mercy for these enemies."

Small Update:
Small Update:
Baron Validar’s forces have surrounded the High Guard riders who had been heading towards Ansimont. The Baron speaks to the riders who are visibly afraid. Their hands are on their weapons.
“Validar the Vicious!” One of the riders utters in fear.
“The Plague of Pyris!” Another adds.
“I am in command here,” one of the riders answers. “I am Sergeant Levine of High Guard. Kill me if you must, but let my men go free.”

Even the sound of Validar’s name causes the men to wince."I am Baron Validar of Pyris. Who is the commanding officer of this group?"

“I am in command here,” one of the riders answers. “I am Sergeant Levine of High Guard. Kill me if you must, but let my men go free.”
“New Duke?” Sergeant Levine questions in confusion. “We know nothing of what you speak, but if you have allied yourself with that treacherous Crown Prince, then you are our sworn enemies! He murdered the Duke of Elcadan in cold blood and nearly succeeded in killing his own father in an attempted coup d'état. Just like you poisoned your father so that you could gain control of your domain! Be warned, the forces of Elcadan are on guard against your treasonous activity! You may kill us, but others will rise up to fight you!”"It has been brought to my attention that some among you have been wrongly convinced that Pyrisian soldiers are responsible for the massacre here. There is nothing further from the truth. This destruction was caused by members of the Deville family which has been deposed in Elcadan and has done nothing but harm the land that was entrusted to them."

Lyonessa:
The spell seems to have worked, as the leader of the patrol slows his mount and urges the others to do the same. “A follower of Mystra?” He muses aloud. “They are generally trustworthy.”
“Do not listen to her!” The woman who Argent heard speak before calls out. Thanks to her magic, Argent can see that the woman is dressed as a simple peasant, but is extraordinarily beautiful.

In response to this, some of the riders go for their weapons, while the leader seems more confused.
Lyonessa's gamble works as she is able to convince the leader of the riders to pause and give what she says some consideration. However, some woman among them is stirring up trouble. Not having much choice but to continue trying, she concentrates on the leader.
"You are being decieved, but it is not by us," Lyonessa says. "Instead we merely wish to show you the whole truth, and then you can decide for yourself freely."
Acerion lands with his pegasus then and it has an even greater effect. Lyonessa can see some of the younger men giving pause at seeing such a wonderous and good creature.
"I am Sir Acerion Kalindor, paladin of Heironeous," Acerion calls out. "Whatever these ladies have been telling you is absolutely true and I request you wait long enough for us to show you proof and tell the tale in full."

With that pronouncement, the peasant woman begins to cast a spell…
Depending on whether Acerion detects any evil or just notices the peasant's words, he calls out, pointing, "Beware! You have a witch among you!"
Lyonessa's heart quickens as Acerion points out that the woman is casting a spell. Needing to act quickly, she casts her Command spell, ordering the woman to "Sleep."

Chareos
With a burdened mount in tow Chareos sees the parties in front of him. For a long moment he can’t catch his breath as his mouth goes dry. There, in front of ,neither party has drawn their blades. Kicking his mount harder into a faster run, Chareos knows that time may be of the utmost importance, for hostility may prove to reign rather than level heads.
Pulling his mount to a stop, Chareos looks to Elcadan men, then to the baron. Not saying a word he dismounts and moves to the other mount. Taking out his dagger he cuts away the bonds of the bodies; easily lifting them from the mount he drags them in front of those present so all can see.
Turning the drow body so the face looks skyward as well as the undead, Chareos looks into the faces of each man, but says nothing, letting those gaze upon the bodies to their own ends.
If it warrants it… “What lays before you is all that was found within the village of Wrasseldown. You may not believe what I say nor of the Baron’s for whatever end, but know this. I swore no oath to the Baron of Pyris nor of Elcadan. I am here of my own free will for the betterment of the people of Cynalon.”
“Is there not a Ranger among you? Or perhaps one who possess the ability to read tracks? Come see the travesty as we have lived it, and you will see the truth this day.”

To serve and protect those who cannot.
To sway or not to sway...
Baron Validar -
Validar announces himself to the stopped riders of Elcadan. They are not impressed.
Even the sound of Validar’s name causes the men to wince.
“Validar the Vicious!” One of the riders utters in fear.
“The Plague of Pyris!” Another adds.
“I am in command here,” one of the riders answers. “I am Sergeant Levine of High Guard. Kill me if you must, but let my men go free.”
Not giving the misguided monikers any attention, the Baron turns to the one identified as Sergeant Levine. "There is to be no killing, Sergeant. But your devotion to your troops is noted."
Validar starts to explain the situation, but it seems that these men and perhaps much of Elcadan has heard things differently.
You may kill us, but others will rise up to fight you!”
"I do not know where you get your information, but it does not surprise me that you have been misled. I am a member of the King's new Council of Lords and a knight of Cynalon. I would give my life for my kingdom, my king and her people. The Crown Prince is now King and it was not through a coup. Cynalon is ready for her new king and needs him to lead her."
"My companions and I were instrumental in the defeat of the humanoid invasion force which recently attacked Corunglain. We have struck a blow for all of Cynalon in attacking the Hextor main temple in New Keln. We fight for the good of Cynalon and her people. We are not monsters and we are not your enemy."
"The Duke of Elcadan was killed. This is true, but not by the King. He was replaced by a demonic servant of the vile Deville family. They are cunning, they are cruel and they have tried to corrupt all that is Elcadan. Especially now that the truth is being made plain and they are being exposed to the light. You men have been duped by a desperate attempt to cloud your judgement and to become sacrifices for the Devilles to remain in power."
"Think on this, while you look around you. You are outnumbered by my cavalry. If I were your enemy, why would we be conversing? Would I not simply strike you down where you stand? Would we not at the least take you prisoners of war? There is nothing stopping us, other than the truth we speak."
"As for this other lie you have been told: my father was poisoned, but not by me. He was poisoned by the enemies of Cynalon. Relon VanArkus is alive and well. He is with us, not a short distance away. The only reason I am now Baron of Pyris so soon is not my own ambition. Elcadan has been declared broken by King Victor. The old Duke of Elcadan had been killed long ago. Relon is the new Duke of the territory, which includes Pyris now and is called the Duchy of the Streel. This land and Pyris are now one. We are not at war, we are allies. And our enemy is the same: the ones who have poisoned these lands for so long. Under Duke Relon, Elcadan will be brought into the status that was only corrupted by the Devilles."
"Everything you have been told has pieces of the truth, but are outright lies. You have been deceived by circumstantial claims and innuendo. I am not your enemy and neither is Duke Relon."
Validar continues his explanation and the troops are silent. At least it seems he has quieted their initial outbursts. The question is whether they are quiet simply to spare their own lives, or if they have begun to believe what has been said.
At that moment, Chareos rides up with his demonstration. Pulling the undead body and the dead drow from the horse, Chareos drags them before the men.
“What lays before you is all that was found within the village of Wrasseldown. You may not believe what I say nor of the Baron’s for whatever end, but know this. I swore no oath to the Baron of Pyris nor of Elcadan. I am here of my own free will for the betterment of the people of Cynalon.”
"The people of Wrasseldown were murdered. By demonic forces of the Deville family and their drow allies. Corunglain was attacked by a contingent of humanoids and Hextorites, with drow assistance and led by the dragon Ember. The invasion force was halted and Corunglain is safe once more, but the enemies attention has been turned here and they seek to use you to their own ends."
Validar points to the undead with his sword. "This poor unfortunate soul was a citizen of Cynalon. But he was twisted into a monster. These creatures seek only to make more of their own kind, a self-replicating army that would slaughter all of our lands and all of humanity and demi-humanity beyond. That is the sort of evil that we face. We can fight them at every turn and eventually triumph. With the people of Elcadan behind us, we can turn the tide against the enemy much quicker and save many more people's lives before this is over."
"Now the choice is yours. You can choose to believe what I say and join us in fighting the enemies of Cynalon. Start the process of working together that the Streel Duchy has afforded us. Or you can believe the lies you have been told, that Pyris is on a warpath and seeks to destroy all of Elcadan. In doing so you will be a part of the destruction you seek to avoid."
Validar waits to see the men's reactions.

The Path to Redemption?
Yusef:
"As for the other, if it is your intent to execute me, at least have the decency and courtesy for someone who has fought at your side to do it now. I will do nothing to stop you." That said, Yusef simply stands there looking at Corley, waiting to see what he decides.
Otherwise, Validar simply restates things he has already said ad nauseum. Since he doesn't appear able to be rational and keeps returning to the same nonsensical arguments, Yusef just waits for him to finish. Clearly, serving with this group will be more unpleasant than he had anticipated, but it is the only real path to his goal of freeing his mother, and for that he will endure pretty much anything.
---
Yusef races to help cut off the riders. As he goes, it turns out that those in their group who are mounted will reach them before he does. As they pass him, if the opportunity arises, he will vear toward Sherra's horse and attempt to swing himself aboard.
"If I seem cavalier, as you put it, it is because I know that death is the only thing that will keep me from accomplishing the King's task.Corley wrote:“Friend Yusef,” Sir Corley says in an even tone, “It has become clear to me based on your rather cavalier attitude that you do not fully grasp the situation that you are in.
"As for the other, if it is your intent to execute me, at least have the decency and courtesy for someone who has fought at your side to do it now. I will do nothing to stop you." That said, Yusef simply stands there looking at Corley, waiting to see what he decides.
"It would seem you know far more about my family than I do, Crysania. As for Krazzora, if she is truly Abigail as Thelma said, then she is no drow, even if she has taken that form. I know little of drow, but they must be truly wicked to be considered worthy allies by my family."Crysania wrote:“Yes, Krazzora was the drow matron who was allied with Ember, Dek, and that vile witch Xanathom!
Yusef's mouth drops open at Validar's bizarre statement. Is he hallucinating or just that deluded? "I cannot imagine what in Celestian's name you mean, as I have made no accusations against any of you." He can only shake his head, wondering if the new Baron is in his right mind.Validar wrote:"My lecture is about the future, clearly, not the past. "Your repeated weak defense of previous actions will only cause more scrutiny for your actions in the future.
Of course, remaining above reproach is impossible, as he has no way of predicting other people's expectations. However, it is clear that it would do no good to point that out, so Yusef doesn't bother to reply.Validar wrote:"Knowing that you are not of an evil nature does not discount the potential possibility of duplicity and deceit.

Yusef races to help cut off the riders. As he goes, it turns out that those in their group who are mounted will reach them before he does. As they pass him, if the opportunity arises, he will vear toward Sherra's horse and attempt to swing himself aboard.
