Elfquest #19
The Chimera Medallion has been located. It was part of a test to ensure that only true elves can gather all the medallions. As a reward for passing the test, the locations of three more medallions were given to the rangers. Each relates what they saw and indicates on the map roughly where they are located.
It is late in the day, so the group sets up camp near the cave. The night passes without incident.
Next morning, the group is moving onward once more. Nariya leads the way with her cooshee companions. Late in the day, the rangers determine that they have reached the general area of the Lizard Medallion. They spread out to find what Valena saw in her vision.
The hill is quickly located in a small clearing amongst the forest. The trees overhead has grown together so no sunlight reaches the ground.
The hill is just as Valena saw it in her vision. A small fountain sits on the top of a low hill. Pure crystalline water trickles down from the lizard heads all around the center of the fountain. No one or thing seems to be around.
No one has yet to approach the fountain. It is late in the day and darkness has already started to fall.
Now what?

Kylie:
Before going to bed that evening, Kylie casts her new Stoneskin spell on herself.
A quiet night passes, and Kylie spends most of it reviewing the new spells she has learned. There is so much here to really grasp; no doubt it will take a lot of time to master it all. Also, with Stoneskin cast, she makes a few changes to her spell list.
Knowing they have a long way to go, Kylie prepares a quick, light breakfast for everyone. A heavy meal doesn't go well with that kind of trek.
Indeed it is long, as they spend most of the day walking through the forest toward their deestination. It is getting on toward evening as they come in sight of what they believe to be their destination. The clearing is pretty, despite the lack of sunlight. Rather, it has a sense of permanent twilight, though no doubt nightfall will dispell that illusion.
They've travelled all this way, might as well see if the medallion is visible. Kylie strides up the little hill toward the fountain.

The hill is quickly located in a small clearing amongst the forest. The trees overhead has grown together so no sunlight reaches the ground.
Enjoying the light meal Kylie prepared, Nariya happily leads the group out. Knowing where she needs to lead them, she finds the fastest route, and still it takes them all day to make the journey.
They've travelled all this way, might as well see if the medallion is visible. Kylie strides up the little hill toward the fountain.
Seeing Kylie striding up the hill, Nariya readies a spear and moves a little bit away, keeping Kylie in sight but checking the rest of area as well. She is ready in case Kylie needs assistance.

Laucian
Making camp for the night, Laucian sets up his bedroll as his two cooshee friends lay down beside him, onyx making his home right between them. Laying on his back staring at the night sky he can’t help but wonder how far they had come, though thoughts of how much further they must go invades his mind. Shaking off such thoughts he gets up and makes his way a little ways from camp, and begins praying to Ehlonna.
He will take his shift when needed and be early to rise. Gathering up his gear he will put his Ehlonna armor on.
Moving out behind the others, he keeps an arrow upon his bow glancing left and right, sometimes turning about checking their rear flank. As night begins to fall the group finally finds the fountain, Kylie begins to move forward as Nariya intends to guard. Looking about Laucian can’t help but notice nothing is about. Raising a curious eyebrow, at the fountain he can’t help but wonder what would keep someone from taking the medallion…then his eyes fall upon the crystalline water and wonders if it is truly water. He will begin looking for tracks leading up to the fountain(beside kylie) and see if there are any that return from the hill.
(What kind of Lizard head? And how many?)

Lia
As they make camp for the night Lia tries to make herself comfortable but for some reason where ever she lays a root or rock seems to pops out making her a bit ornery. “Is there no smooth ground in this place?” she asks as she looks about. Gathering up her bedroll she heads to the barge and decides to sleep there, but first prays to her patron.
After eating a little bit of the meal Kylie nicely cooked, “Thank you, Kylie.” She gathers up her gear and follows the others into the forest, slowly they make their way through the forest. After several hours of hiking Lia’s feet begin to bother her as blisters begin to form on her feet. “How much further?” she asks quietly as she makes her way forward.
Soon enough they reach the area and spread out. The fountain is found in time on top of a hill, crystalline water flows forth from the lizard heads catching the dimming sunlight. Turning to Valena, “Was there any sign of danger in your vision?” she asks as Kylie moves forward. Seeing this Lia draws her longsword and circles to the right of Kylie.

Post Continued:
After a full day of traveling, the elves have reached the lizard fountain as seen in Valena’s vision. It’s located at the top of a small hill in a clearing. Kylie goes forth to inspect the fountain, while Nariya, Laucian, and Lia keep watch.
All seems innocent enough as Kylie closes in on the fountain. Then all of the sudden, the ground beneath her feet begins to move! Somehow Kylie manages to keep her balance and retreat back down the hill.
The fountain and small hill vanishes, as if it was only an illusion of some kind. What you see now is nowhere near as friendly and inviting!
A large, lizard-like creature rises up from a small gulley between two natural slopes. (Kylie had been walking on the lizard itself when the ground was moving!) The whole thing is about fifty feet long, and ten feet high. It has a huge head on a long neck and you have no doubt that it could bite anyone of you in half! It has four legs and a tail nearly as long as its neck. The reptile is gray in color.
The great reptile roars loudly and looks for someone to munch on, targeting Kylie! It swings its neck about and lunges towards her.
Now what?

Sherwood:
The rest of this night passes pleasantly enough and we’re off again the next morning. By now traveling with the cooshee’s has become normal. With them making so little noise, you sometimes forget that they are there.
The fountain from Valena’s vision is soon located. Kylie goes to take a closer look and a huge lizard appears in the fountains place!
“Everyone, back off to the tree line! This guardian is probably magical in nature! We may not be able to kill it by using normal means!”
“I see” Sherwood answers. “Yes, I feel alright, Lia. I didn’t feel any time passing for me. Very peculiar.”Lia wrote:“You froze up Uncle.” She states simply. “It was a test, where only elves could approach and recover the medallion. The voice said if we touch the statue we could learn the places of the other medallions. The statue crumbled after that.”
“Are you okay Uncle?”
“That does seem to fit the facts,” Sherwood agrees. “The sword would protect me from mortal magic, but divine magic is another matter entirely. This little test must have been set up by the elfin gods.”Lia wrote:"The chimera statue was apparently sentient, though I'm uncertain what happened to the live chimera we saw, as we have not seen it again since entering the cave. The moment we entered, some magical force caused you to cease moving or responding; apparently, you had no sensation of what occurred or even of the passage of time, as we have been here for several minutes. I must say that it concerns me that you were affected by this magic, despite the protection of your sword there.”
“All in all, a good outcome. This will make our quest easier.”Lia wrote:"The statue spoke to us, using something like telepathy and told us that only true elves could retrieve her amulet. She also told us that elves could receive knowledge of the locations of three of the medallions by touching the heads of the statue, which Laucian, Nariya and Valena did. Once that was done and the chimera medallion was retrieved from her forehead, her job was complete and the statue crumbled - which also released you from your magical stasis."

Lilia:
Lilia is pleased with the outcome at the Chimera cave. Not only was one more medallion gained, but also the location of three others learned!
That night passes quietly and the next day is spent traveling again. While still an elf, Lilia isn’t used to doing this much walking. She’s more than happy to come to a stop when the fountain is discovered. The fountain turns out to be an illusion and a real lizard was concealed under it!

Valena:
Valena settles in for the night with her new companions. She’s spent much time and slept among Rathlar’s wolves in the past, so the experience is not new for her. It’s only the size of the cooshee’s that make this new.
Traveling on foot is normal for Valena and she enjoys the trip with her new friends. Near the end of the day we find what we’re searching for.
Valena draws her bow and is ready to fire when the lizard appears! She’ll let loose her shaft before hearing Sherwood’s warning. Valena will provide support fire should the lizard get too close to anyone else before they can reach the treeline.

Talen:
Talen breathes a sigh of relief when the Chimera Medallion is gained and Uncle Sherwood is freed from his strange paralysis. An enjoyable meal is had and Talen makes her to compliment Kylie on her fine cooking skills. “You’re cooking is almost as good as grandma’s!”
The following day is yet more walking. Talen’s feet hurt after a time, but he soldiers on as this is a very important quest. Once we reach the clearing, Talen warily eyes the fountain.
“This might be more dangerous than it seems,” Talen wonders.
Then the lizard appears and it’s going after Kylie! Talen can hear shouting from the others, but can only think of Kylie’s safety! Drawing his bastard sword, he rushes to drive the giant lizard away from her.
“Get away from her, you monster!”

Nariya keeps her eye for the medallion, but Valena already fires an arrow and Talen goes charging at the beast in an effort to save Kylie. If we were supposed to win by not fighting, it might now be too late.
Nariya will be ready to set the spear if the lizard charges her, otherwise she will be defensive and look for the medallion.

To Save Mother Tree!
Kylie:
---
Moving up the hill toward the fountain, Kylie can't help but think this is too easy. Surely, there must be some trick to obtaining this medallion, but they won't be able to determine what it is until they get closer.
Kylie's thoughts prove almost prescient as the ground suddenly lurches beneath her feet. Only her natural grace and agility keep her from a bad tumble. Back-pedalling as fast as she can, the entire hill disappears and is replaced by a giant lizard. Apparently, she was actually walking on the lizard!
If that wasn't bad enough, the lizard seems to want to eat her and Kylie can see Talen charging forward out of the corner of her eye. Sherwood yells for everyone to get back, but Talen appears to ignore the advice.
Get out of there, Talen!" she yells, even as she casts Improved Invisibility on herself. Hopefully, the lizard won't be able to see her and she can dodge out of the way of it's bite. Right now, she's a little too busy to heed Lilia's advice about looking for the medallion, though with the lizard this close, it would be hard to miss if she's right.
"You're welcome, Lia," Kylie replies with a smile. She enjoys cooking, and it allows her to feel like she's contributing to the group even when she isn't really doing much.Lia wrote:After eating a little bit of the meal Kylie nicely cooked, “Thank you, Kylie.”
Though not directed to her, this seems to answer her question as well. Kylie will have to keep that limitation in mind.Sherwood wrote:“That does seem to fit the facts,” Sherwood agrees. “The sword would protect me from mortal magic, but divine magic is another matter entirely. Kylie walks towards the fountain only to discover that it is an illusion that conceals a huge lizard! She manages to keep her feet while the ground moves underneath her. Sherwood warns everyone to move back to the tree line, but hardly anyone pays attention.
Talen draws his bastard sword and rushes the lizard in an attempt to protect Kylie. Talen intercepts the lizard before it can reach the half-elfin finder and slashes at it with his weapon. The blade bites into the lizards flesh, but no blood comes from the wound!
Valena and Laucian fire arrows from their bows. Both are on target with their shafts and they embed in the lizard’s side. Again the lizard feels no effect from the strikes.
The cooshee’s begin to bark and half of them advance to attack the lizard. Dapple runs between Kylie and the lizard and growls menacingly at the reptile. Like the others, the cooshee’s seem unable to harm the lizard.
Nariya stands fast holding her spear. The lizard hasn’t moved in her direction, so she’s able to examine it closely. As was expected, the Lizard Medallion is embedded in the forehead of the creature!
Kylie manages to get her Improved Invisibility spell off before the creature can get close to her. Having lost its target, the lizard swings its head around and grabs Talen! Lia rushes in with her longsword and slices into the lizards’ neck, but once more the enemy shows no signs of damage.
Surprisingly, the lizard does not sink its teeth into Talen. Instead, it whips its neck around and tosses Talen over forty feet through the air towards the tree line! The half-elf hits the ground hard and seems dazed from the landing. The lizard then looks around for another to grab.

GM Notes
GM Notes:
As some of you know, I recently picked up a reference book that greatly expands the demi-human pantheons. Here’s the full Elvin Pantheon, AKA the Seldarine.
Aerdrie Faenya (F) – CG – air, weather, avians, rain, fertility, avariel (winged elves).
Angharradh (F) – CG – spring, fertility, planting, birth, defense, wisdom
Corellon Larethian – CG – magic, elfin magic, music, arts, crafts, war, the elfin race, poets, poetry, bards, warriors.
Deep Sashelas- CG – sea elves, creation, knowledge, oceans, underwater & sea elf beauty, water magic.
Ehlonna (F) – CG – forests, forest creatures, rangers, dryads, autumn.
Erevan Ilesere – CN – mischief, change, rogues.
Fenmarel Mestarine – CN – feral elves, outcasts, scapegoats, isolation, isolationists.
Hanali Celanil (F) – CG – love, romance, beauty, fine art and artists.
Labelas Enoreth – CG – time, longevity, moment of choice, history.
Rillifane Rallathil – CG – woodlands, nature, wild elves, druids.
Sehanine Moonbow (F) – CG – mysticism, dreams, death, journeys, transcendence, the moon, the sun, the heavens.
Shevarash – CN – hatred of drow, vengeance, military crusades, loss, revenge.
Solonor Thelandira – CG – archery, hunting, wilderness survival.
And here are some interesting tidbits about some of the various deities.
Corellon Larethian is the father of the elfin race. His original consort was a dark featured goddess known as Araushnaee. Araushnaee bore Corellon twin children, a daughter Eilistraee and a son Vhaeraun. Later Araushnaee betrayed her lover and attempted to overthrow the Seldarine. During the battle between gods, Eilistraee fired an arrow to protect her father when Araushnaee redirected the arrow to strike Corellon. Araushanaee’s plot failed and she and those who followed her were banished. Araushnaee later took the name Lolth. Eilistraee voluntarily went into exile with her mother and brother with the hope of one day bringing the dark elves back into the light. While Eilistraee is generally on good terms with the Seldarine, she’s is still considered to be part of the Dark Seldarine ruled by Lolth.
Angharradh is the current consort of Corellon and is known as the One and the Three. While she is a greater goddess on her own, she’s also composed of three other goddess: Aerdrie Faenya, Hanali Celanil, and Sehanine Moonbow. She is the most powerful female elfin deity and in some myths the mother of the Elfin race.
Hanali Celanil is one of the more outgoing goddess and has friends among many other pantheons. Her followers include both elves, half-elves, and humans.
Ehlonna is the daughter of Corellon and Silvanus, Mother Nature herself in the human pantheon. Thus she is a half-elven goddess, but can appear as a half-elf, an elf, and as a human. She has followers among all three races.
Now what?

Lia
Before her Talen reaches the lizard and lashes out with his sword, slicing the beast but to no avail. No blood spurts forth! Squinting against the sunlight Lia rushes onward and lashes into the beast with her longsword striking the beast’s neck.Blood does no pour forth….
For a long moment Lia looks down at her sword then to the beasts neck…. “The blade is fine…” clearly confused then word(assuming Nariya relays the info) of the medallion is within the Lizards forehead.. Knowing a distraction at the very least is needed, Lia fishes into her pockets and produces a statuette and places it before her, issuing a command word.
If she is able to she will direct the lionesses forward and have them go for the medallion, hoping to scratch and knag it from the lizard’s flesh.

Laucian
Firing his arrows at the Lizard proves fruitless as they lodge themselves into the beasts side. His eyes narrow as he watches the beast shrug off attacks from multiple attacks and what is worth no blood springs forth from the wounds nor does it whince in pain. Then it grabs Talen, Flinging him through the air as if nothing more then pedals in the wind. With a loud thud he lands behind the ranger causing Laucian to turn. Seeing the young half elf move, he breathes a sigh of relief.
Gazing back to the beast he wonders if Ehlonna’s blessings would help, forgoing he begins to cast his Hold Animal spell directed solely on the Lizard(if possible) If the lions are already up and about he will cast Speak with Animals and try to speak with the Lizard saying….
“We have come for the medallion that our ancestors have left/created to guard.”

Kylie:
Her spell takes effect, and Kylie steps to the side so as not to be where the lizard expects. However, the lizard turns and bites Talen instead!
Clearly, he didn't listen when she yelled at him to get back. Now, he's paying the price for that impetuosity. Even worse, his sister Lia has followed him in close.
Talen goes flying as the beast seems to just toss him away. Quickly casting Fly on herself, Kylie goes to check on his condition. "Talen! You okay?!"
As she flew past, Kylie spotted what looked like the medallion on the lizard's head. Perhaps she can pry this one loose as well. Once she knows that Talen is okay, she'll turn and fly back to the lizard and try to remove the medallion with her best knife.

Nariya:
Nariya stands fast holding her spear. The lizard hasn’t moved in her direction, so she’s able to examine it closely. As was expected, the Lizard Medallion is embedded in the forehead of the creature!
Those that attacked seem to do no damage as Nariya suspected. She does, however, spot the medallion embedded right in the lizard's forehead!
"There!" she calls out, pointing. "I see the medallion. It is within the lizard's forehead!"
She next watches Talen be tossed around and then thrown from the lizard's jaws. Nariya will step up closer, keeping her spear ready should the creature turn on her. Otherwise she will wait to see if the lizard responds to Laucian's words.

Sherwood
Sherwood:
“It’s not a living creature!” Sherwood calls out. “It probably cannot be harmed and most likely only removing the medallion will stop it! Back off!”
“That worked rather well,” Sherwood notes as everyone pretty much does what they want in regards to the lizard. It’s no surprise that the cooshee’s join in.Lia wrote:"Sorry Uncle, But I will not leave my brother to that thing!" With a metallic his of her sword she moves forward brandishing her blade with a two handed grip. She will lash out with her blade all the while looking for the medallion on the beast, if by some chance she sees it, she will carve it from its hide.
“Possible.” Sherwood adds as he watches the scene unfold. It appears that the lizard cannot be harmed at least by conventional weapons. This, coupled with the fact that it was unmoving and concealed underneath an illusion suggest to Sherwood that this lizard is not a living creature. It is a construct of some type. Furthermore, since it didn’t really hurt Talen when it could have, it must not want to really harm anyway. Just force everyone back.Nariya wrote:"Or it might be another test!" Nariya says, backing away but keeping a tight grip on her spear.

Lilia watches the conflict with the lizard unfold. It’s obvious to her that this lizard cannot be a living being. It must be a golem much like the warrior statue encountered before. Removing the medallion must be the key.
Lilia notes that Kylie has made herself invisible. Good, she must have realized what needs to be done too.
“Hold off on any ranged attacks! Kylie is going to attempt to remove the medallion under cover of invisibility!”

Valena:
Valena and Laucian fire arrows from their bows. Both are on target with their shafts and they embed in the lizard's side. Again the lizard feels no effect from the strikes.
Valena eases back on her next arrow as she sees here earlier shafts having no effect. Sherwood says that it cannot be harmed and Lilia warns that Kylie is invisible in the air. Stowing her arrows, Valena will keep her distance. She’ll call out to the cooshee’s to keep their distance as well. She doesn’t want to see them get hurt by this creature.

Talen
Talen:
Talen’s only thoughts are getting this creature away from Kylie, that he doesn’t really hear anyone else saying anything. Saving her is all that matters to him. With sword in hand, Talen slashes at the lizard.Kylie wrote:“Get out of there, Talen!" she yells, even as she casts Improved Invisibility on herself. Hopefully, the lizard won't be able to see her and she can dodge out of the way of its bite. Right now, she's a little too busy to heed Lilia's advice about looking for the medallion, though with the lizard this close, it would be hard to miss if she's right.
The fact that his attack had no effect stuns Talen for a moment. How can this be? There’s no blood!Talen draws his bastard sword and rushes the lizard in an attempt to protect Kylie. Talen intercepts the lizard before it can reach the half-elfin finder and slashes at it with his weapon. The blade bites into the lizards flesh, but no blood comes from the wound!
The next thing Talen knows, he’s being picked up by the lizard and then is sent flying through the air! The landing is rough as Talen helplessly tumbles across the clearing. He’s more dazed then hurt from the rough treatment. A familiar voice is heard.Surprisingly, the lizard does not sink its teeth into Talen. Instead, it whips its neck around and tosses Talen over forty feet through the air towards the tree line! The half-elf hits the ground hard and seems dazed from the landing. The lizard then looks around for another to grab.
“I think so…” Talen mutters his world still spinning. “I just need to get my bearings.”Kylie wrote:Talen goes flying, as the beast seems to just toss him away. Quickly casting Fly on herself, Kylie goes to check on his condition. "Talen! You okay?!"
Post Continued
Post Continued:
The Lizard Medallion is being guarded by a large lizard! Kylie discovered this when she tried to approach the illusion of the fountain that concealed the lizard. The lizard animated and Kylie managed to escape by casting Improved Invisibility.
Talen tried to protect Kylie, but was caught by the lizard in her place. It picked him up and then whipping its head around flung him across the clearing. Talen hit the ground hard and tumbled to a stop. Fortunately, the protective Stoneskin Sherwood put on him saved him from any real harm. However, his head is still spinning.
After seeing this Kylie casts Fly on herself and goes to check up on Talen.
Laucian and Valena cease their arrow attacks upon seeing that they are not doing any damage. Sherwood speculates that it’s not a real creature, but rather a construct and that everyone should just back off. Valena calls out to the cooshee’s to back away and some of them do just that.
Lia realizes that her sword isn’t harming the lizard and backs up a bit. Hearing that the medallion is embedded in the lizard’s forehead, she fishes through her pockets and pulls out two figurines. These are set down, the command word spoken, and a pair of lionesses appear! Lia commands them to go after the medallion.
Laucian casts Hold Animal spell, but his has no effect on the lizard. Nariya continues to hold her spear at the ready, taking a few steps closer. However, the lizard is now contending with the lionesses and doesn’t get any closer to the elf.
Satisfied that Talen is all right, Kylie comes flying back in still invisible. The lizard manages to catch one of the lionesses with its tail, sending it flying. Kylie gets close enough to reach out for the medallion. Her dagger is used once more and this medallion pops out easily from the lizard’s forehead. Like the warrior statue before, the lizard ceases movement and collapses into many pieces. Its threat is over with and another medallion is gained.

Kylie:
Kylie flies over near the head of the lizard. Trying not to touch the lizard so as not to give it forewarning of her intentions, she reaches out and down with her dagger. Seconds tick by as she waits for the creature to pause a moment. As soon as it does, she deftly flicks the medallion from its forehead and watches it collapse into small pieces. Floating lower, Kylie plucks the medallion from the pile of shards.
"Got it!" she calls out to the others as she drops the medallion into one of the many pockets of her enchanted Girdle. Kylie ends the Improved Invisibility spell then, but leaves the Fly spell in effect.

We may have to start calling her "Kylie the Collector", considering her penchant for collecting medallions. What's this, three or four that she's nabbed so far?

Sherwood:
The medallion in the lizard’s forehead pops out and the construct simply collapses settling the issue. Kylie re-appears and collects the medallion. The excitement over with, some of the group turns to Sherwood for guidance.
“It’s late. Let us camp here for the night. Then we’ll travel to the house from Laucian’s vision in the morning.”
Sherwood pauses, gathering his thoughts.
“Talen, you recklessly disobeyed my orders to back away from the lizard. Kylie is a very skilled individual, as is everyone here. She can take care of herself. All you did was put yourself in danger and potentially make the situation worse. Any group functions better when they are coordinated, not when they are doing whatever they wish. Think before you act. Let’s get some rest.”
Later on, Sherwood will question Laucian further about his vision.
“It seems that Valena’s vision wasn’t as clear as we expected. It is true that she saw the fountain and that the medallion that was here, but it didn’t reveal the hidden danger. I can’t help but wonder if your vision also contains hidden danger?”
“As I recall, there is a small cottage in a clearing with the sound of a maiden singing? Then there are those statues that look like Moorkroft’s troops. Let us assume that they were his troops and that something or someone turned them to stone. I think we have to assume that whatever guards the medallion is responsible for this. Now there are spells that can change people to stone and even creatures such as a basilisk or a cockatrice. But more likely is the medusa, a female whose gaze turns men to stone. That does seem the most likely possibility based on what we know so far. Anyone whose has Gaze Reflection available to them should study it in the morning. It looks like we’re going to need it.”

Kylie retrieves the medallion and the conflict with the lizard ends easily enough. That puts six of the medallions in our possession! Half way there!
Sherwood calls for camp to be set up. Talk later turns to the next encounter at the house Laucian saw in his vision.
Lilia will relax for the evening, spending some time with Lady before sleeping. She’ll awaken early in the morning and learn Gaze Reflection.

Going into a casting Laucian tries to holds the beast inplace, though quickly realizes he does not have the chance to do as such.
Soon Lionesses attack the lizard in which one goes flying through the air, then the statue crumbles to the ground, Kylie with the medallion in hand reappears.
Stowing his bow and making sure Talen is up and about Luacian agrees to make camp and relax from the day.
Laucian will pray to ehlonna for new spells, also thank her for her guidance.

“It is entirely possible Sherwood Elf friend.” From what I recall it is merely a simple cottage. One might not think of as a danger, a simple garden with statues does not seem very unfriendly.” He says as an after thought. “If it is a medusa female then there maybe a male as well. I am concerned though, could it also be that these statues be creatures of stone to raise from their perches at the owners command?” he asks curiously especially after the warrior and lizards.
Laucian will pray to ehlonna for new spells, also thank her for her guidance.
Til Ehlonna's will be done
Lia
Lia watches as two lionesses emerge from their slumber, They look to Lia for a moment attentively one even grazing her leg with its mass. “Go, see to the medallion.” She instructs as the great cats leap forward and begin attack in unison with the Lizard. Taking a few steps back she watches as they make little progress, One grabbed by the tail and flung through the air much like Talen, though the cats landing is a bit better.
Her knuckles go white as she clutches at her long sword, though does not move forward Within short order The Lizard crumbles to nothing.
Sheathing her sword and walking to the now limping cat, She pets it with an out stretched hand, “Thank you.” She said softly to the great cat, “I am sorry for your injuries.”
Remembering that one of Lia’s lionesses was harmed; she’ll see if great cat needs any healing too.
“Thank you Valena.” She says with a soft smile.

Walking up to her brother, “You did well this day, Talen. For what it is worth, I am proud of you. You placed yourself in danger to save another. You have found your courage and your heart, the only thing we lack is the experience. Messing with his hair then punching him lightly on the shoulder. “Wait till I tell Grandmother about you charging a a lizard single handedly, I don’t know if she would congratulate you or kill you herself.” she said with a playfull smile.“Yes sir,” is all that he says about the matter before going off to find a place to set up his bedroll.

The Lizard Medallion has been added to the collection. It is the sixth medallion out of twelve, so you’re halfway towards freeing the Mother Tree.
Valena tends to any injuries the cooshee’s gained during the struggle with the lizard construct. She also sees to Lia’s lioness.
The group camps for the evening and the night passes without incident. Next morning, you’re off once more with Nariya in the lead. The journey isn’t as far this time to reach the cottage in the woods. It’s roughly 12 miles from your current position to the northwest. The general area is reached in the early afternoon and the cottage in question is quickly located.
In the middle of a peaceful clearing is a small cottage surrounded by a white fence. Flowers grow at the windows. Several songbirds are nesting in a small tree near the cottage. They happily sing and you can hear what appears to be a young maiden’s voice keeping tune from inside the cottage. There are seven statues in the front yard, each appearing to be a soldier in Moorkroft’s employ.
No one has yet to approach the cottage.

Kylie:
As she works, Kylie cannot miss Sherwood taking Talen to task. His embarrassment is plain, and she has no wish to make it worse by commenting at this point.
After dinner Sherwood and Laucian discuss the latter's vision, with the mage recommending Gaze Reflection to those who may have it available. Lilia volunteers that she can prepare it for the morrow. "I will make sure to have it ready tomorrow as well," says Kylie.
Later that evening, Kylie approaches Talen. "While Sherwood is right, I want you to know that I appreciate your courage and concern for my safety." Leaning close, she gives him a small kiss on the cheek. "Thank you.
"Still, you should be more careful in the future."
That night, Kylie sleeps well, perhaps as a result of all the travel, or maybe it is do to their success so far. She dreams of her mother and the possibility of seeing her again.
After breaking their fast, the group pushes on toward their next stop. Arriving at the picturesque scene, it looks quite idyllic. Of course, the fountain at the last stop did too.
Turning to Sherwood, Kylie asks, "How far away is the last one? Do you think we're likely to get their today? I'm wondering how conservative I should be with my spells."

Kylie will temporarily switch out her Spider Climb for a Gaze Reflection.
BTW, the spell description I have specifically mentions it not being effective against medusas. However, this seems to conflict with what Sherwood said, and I wouldn't think he would make that kind of mistake.
Kylie nods, still floating a bit off the ground, and turns her efforts toward preparing dinner.Sherwood wrote:“It’s late. Let us camp here for the night. Then we’ll travel to the house from Laucian’s vision in the morning.”

Yes, I caught that as well and I believe it to be a mistake. Here's my thought process. It says the spell does provide defense against those spells and creatures that require eye contact to work, but then says it doesn't work against a Medusa as "their affect requires being gazed upon", no eye to eye contact.Kylie wrote:

But then when you look up Medusa in the MM, it clearly states that they have to make eye contact for their stoning affect to work, which clearly means that Gaze Relefection is a defense against them.
I then looked up the spell in the Spell Compendium, which is newer than the PHB and includes many corrected spell entries. The stuff about the spell not affecting Medusa's was completely dropped, so what was listed in the PHB was a mistake. Therefore Gaze Reflection does provide a defense against a Medusa.

Guess I pulled my spell description from the wrong source. If I can find an electronic copy of the Spell Compendium (which doesn't appear to be in the Complete Archive PDF), I should probably revisit that.GM Mad wrote:I then looked up the spell in the Spell Compendium, which is newer than the PHB and includes many corrected spell entries. Thanks for the clarification.

Laucian
Moving through the forest with Nariya in the lead, Laucian makes his way toward their mutual objective. He stops at the clearing's edge and waits his eyes scanning the cottage with interest as the bird song reaches his ears.
Motioning to Sherwood, "I have a spell that maybe of use to us,my friend." Scratching the tip of his nose. "I can see if there are any evil presence that lingers here."
If Sherwood Agrees, Laucian will cast Detect Evil and focus upon the house and its surroundings.

I have no idea if there is a PDF version of the Spell Compendium, as it's actually a 4 volume set of books. Essentially it holds every spell from every book, from every modual, and from every magazine up until the time it was published. Tons of stuff, obviously!fanchergw wrote:Guess I pulled my spell description from the wrong source. “Such a thing is possible. If the statues detect as magical, then they could be guardians of a sort and what we’re dealing with might be something completely unexpected. “Based on Nariya’s map, I’d say about 10-12 miles to the southeast of here. Depending on how much time we spend how much time we spend here at the cottage, we might be able to reach the other location. Odds are that we probably won’t. In any case, you shouldn’t hold back on spells if their use is really needed.”Kylie wrote:Turning to Sherwood, Kylie asks, "How far away is the last one? Do you think we're likely to get their today? Lilia:
We arrive at the cottage safely enough. It seems peaceful upon first glance, but sound did the fountain that concealed the lizard construct.
Upon hearing Sherwood say to learn what we can from a distance, Lilia will step away from the others and speak to Lady for a moment.
“Stay here, my friend. I do not wish to see you turned to stone.”
Lilia will cast Detect Invisibility and Gaze Reflection on herself. Next she’ll cast Polymorph Self and change into something similar to the birds singing in the trees. Lilia will then fly about the cottage, land on one of the window flowerbeds and take a look inside. Should there be nothing to be seen, Lilia will try a different window. She’ll mentally try to time it so as to withdraw before her Gaze Reflection gives out. Lilia will then report her findings to Sherwood.

Valena:
The cottage is reached and Sherwood directs us to find out what we can before approaching closer. Valena will speak to her avian companion Aerie for a moment.
“Fly forth and speak to the birds in the trees. Do not look into the dwelling. Learn what you can from the birds about who lives in the house.”
“You are welcome. She is a magnificent creature.”Lia wrote:“Thank you Valena.” She says with a soft smile.

Talen:
After Sherwood’s lecture, Talen goes to prepare his bedroll for the evening when he has a visitor.
“You’re welcome. I would have done it for—“
Kylie’s unexpected reward stuns Talen and his face can’t help but blush. For a few moments words fail to come to him.
Talen will have a more noticeable spring in his stride for the rest of the evening and sleep does not come easily as his mind wanders.
Next day we reach the cottage in the vision. Talen doesn’t really have much in the way of spells. He forgot to learn Gaze Reflection in the morning as his thoughts were elsewhere.
“I’ll keep an eye on everyone from here,” he’ll offer sheepishly.

“They are.” She said as the cat went rubbing against her legs. “For a time they were some of my only friends. It was a fine day when my family took them from a defeated drow raid.”“You are welcome. She is a magnificent creature.”
With a quick smile, “Don’t mention it.”“Thanks,” Talen answers easily. After rolling around what his sister said in his head a few times, he adds, “I think.”
