New Frontiers #93

The battle in Wrasseldown continues. Chareos creates a second Wall of Ice over a building where other wand attacks just came from. This time, the wall is smaller than the building it is hitting. Plus, Chareos deliberately had some of it fall onto the rushing throng of undead. The ice hits the roof, causing the front to collapse but not all of it. That part of the ice that doesn’t hit the roof continues on to the ground crushing any of the undead it lands on.

Argent flies further to the north and hits the northern part of the swarm with an Ice Storm. Great hailstones appear out of the sky and mercilessly pelt those within its area of effect. Nothing survives the assault.

In a nearby barn, Yusef has located two of the beings responsible for what has transpired in Wrasseldown. The first is called Lord Baracus and he’s not only a follower of Hextor, but also seemingly some kind of undead. With him is a woman Yusef knows as Thelma Deville, his great aunt and one of the children of Eleanor Deville and thus a demoness in her own right.
"I'm Yusef, one of Daniel's sons," Yusef replies as he kicks the one she called Lord Baracus in the chest. "As for why I am here, let's just say I didn't take kindly to being a slave, so I ran away."
“Such is the fate of the weak,” Thelma simply answers. “Only those who are worthy do we consider useful. As for the rest, they are little more than cattle to be used and slaughtered at our whims.”
Yusef catches Baracus with a backfist to the side of the head, which appears to do no damage than the kick. "How about you? Why are you here? Last I heard, Alexander had used you as his plaything. That cannot have been pleasant."
“You heard incorrectly,” Thelma explains with an almost inhuman calm. She displays no emotion to Yusef’s questioning.

“While Alexander’s birth inalterably changed me, I am better for it. I am no longer ruled by my whims or passions. Alexander has since been punished for his transgressions against the family. I have no feelings towards him one way or the other.”

Down below, Sir Acerion rushes into the barn and climbs up the nearby ladder to reach the loft. His Holy Weapon begins to glow as it is close to a follower of Hextor.

Yusef, realizing that he can’t seem to harm Lord Baracus, attempts to disarm the undead Hextorite from his weapon. The attempt is partially successful as Yusef blocks and pins the blood-red sword. However, the Priest of Celestian finds Lord Baracus’ strength to be formidable. He is too strong to force the blade from his hands.

Lord Baracus’ eyes light up with inhuman glee when they see Sir Acerion approach. “What is this? An enemy of Hextor? One side, demonling! I have a real foe to destroy!”

With a shove, Lord Baracus forces Yusef away from him and towards Thelma. His facial mask completely breaks and unbridled hatred floods out. Lord Baracus goes to intercept Sir Acerion. Baracus swings his longsword, but misses Sir Acerion. Acerion strikes back with his Holy Weapon, badly slashing Lord Baracus in the chest. This doesn’t seem to bother Baracus in the slightest as he counterattacks with great vigor!

“Have you seen our creations in action?” Thelma inquires of Yusef. “Are they not magnificent? The perfect inhuman killing machine. Easy enough to create, and yet not mindless as lesser undead can be. Plus they can infect others, transforming them into more creatures with their poisonous bite. In time they will slaughter every living thing in these lands. This small, out-of-the-way town was the perfect testing ground.”

While Yusef senses that Thelma is proud of her creations, he cannot hear it in her voice. It is at this moment that he realizes just what Alexander did to his mother on the day of his birth and what led to her being somewhat of an outcast even among the Deville family. Alexander took her ability to feel emotions! Thelma is now only a cold shell who is more comfortable being surrounded by the unliving and the unfeeling.

Back at the main group of riders, Sir Corley lashes out with his Greatsword once more. The damage he does is transformed into healing energy to him, repairing his wounds. The burning sensation from the creature's bite subsides slightly as two more undead go down.

To the north, Argent flies near the building where other wand attacks came from. She hovers, making herself an inviting target. The unseen enemy takes the bait and fires spells at her. The two Magic Missiles are absorbed by her Tiara, as is the Lightning Bolt. Unexpectedly a third attack is fired as well. It takes the form of a thin bluish ray, but her tiara absorbs it too.

Tapping into this stolen spell energy, Argents uses it to cast a Fireball without losing memory of the spell. The Fireball is fired into the open window and explodes inside the room where the wand attacks are coming from. The flames swell and engulf the entire room. The windows are blown out and the roof is lifted up several feet, before falling back down. Fire begins to consume the building.

A short distance away, Baron Validar rushes towards the general store where other wand attacks came from. He reaches the front of the building before the wand wielders are ready to fire again. A Lightning Bolt harmlessly impacts into the earth behind the Baron. The Magic Missiles strike Crysania again.

The wave of undead closes and strikes once more. Sir Corley’s armor protects him from any damage, just as does for Crysania. Chareos is swarmed over and takes multiple hits, but his Stoneskin protects him from harm. His spell ruined, Chareos smashes the undead near him with his staff. Two are damaged, but not killed.

While Sir Corley and Chareos hold the undead at bay, Serena casts another spell. At her command, a thin 10’ high Wall of Iron comes into being. The wall bisects the first building hit by a Wall of Ice and passes partially into the Blade Barrier. The sound of the whirling blades slashing the iron wall fills the air. The Fire Elemental is on the other side of the wall and it continues to burn any undead who venture too close. All of a sudden the number of undead around Chareos and Sir Corley dwindle to a dozen.

Up near Crysania, the orcs summoned by Lyonessa disappear underneath a wave of undead. Lyonessa’s next spell attempt is too late to save them. However, the undead inflicted by Confusion do respond. A few just stand there confused, while other undead attack each other!

At Ivy’s command, Spike Growth infects the ground between the Blade Barrier and the closest building. To most onlookers, nothing appears to have happened. But with True Sight Crysania can see that the earth in that area has been transformed into something akin to caltrops. Any undead walking upon these sharp spikes have their feet torn up. Unable to understand what is happening, several continue on eventually succumbing to their wounds. The progress of others is slowed to a crawl.

On the second floor of the general store, Sherra has discovered that the unseen wand attackers are drow! While the drow are looking out the windows to use their wands, Sherra covertly is pouring oil on the floor in an effort to start a fire. As she works she becomes aware of a noise behind her. It is the sound of something moving quickly in noisy armor! Glancing back, Sherra can see Baron Validar emerging from the stairs and dashing down the hallway towards her! Looking back, Sherra can see the drow turning in her direction due to the noise!

Yusef:
Thelma wrote:“Such is the fate of the weak,” Thelma simply answers. “Only those who are worthy do we consider useful. As for the rest, they are little more than cattle to be used and slaughtered at our whims.”
"I bet you're a lot of fun at parties," Yusef replies with a smirk. It's certainly not a philosophy guaranteed to make friends... Of course, Yusef knows the Devilles have little interest in friends, only servants - which is apparently what this Lord Baracus is.
Thelma wrote:“You heard incorrectly,” Thelma explains with an almost inhuman calm. She displays no emotion to Yusef’s questioning.

“While Alexander’s birth inalterably changed me, I am better for it. I am no longer ruled by my whims or passions. Alexander has since been punished for his transgressions against the family. I have no feelings towards him one way or the other.”
Thelma's words are strangely cold and emotionless. Yusef feels a bit of a chill run down his spine; it's as though she's no longer any more alive than her undead servants.

On Baracus' next attack, Yusef manages to trap his sword, thus keeping himself from being wounded again. However, this undead creature is too strong and he cannot wrench the sword away.

Fortunately, just then Acerion shows up! Baracus sees the angelic paladin and tosses Yusef away like an old shoe. The two natural enemies immediately have at one another, with Acerion seeming to fare better for the moment.

In a stroke of luck, Baracus' push forces Yusef closer to his great-aunt. Yusef had been trying to figure out how to get nearer to her, and this suits his plans perfectly.
Thelma wrote:“Have you seen our creations in action?” Thelma inquires of Yusef.
Stepping closer, Yusef looks out over the grounds below where his new friends are battling Thelma's creations. "They are quite something, Aunt Thelma. I can see how they would suit your plans quite well." Even with the darkness in his own soul, Yusef it bothered by the inexorability and gruesomeness of her plan. To think that these creatures will make anyone they destroy like themselves makes them a self-regenerating army.

Just then, it occurs to Yusef what Alexander did to Thelma. He stole her emotions! She is little more than a cold, lifeless shell; no wonder she is so at home with the undead, as she is little more than one herself.

From his position here, it appears that the Guardians are fighting a defensive battle. They have sectioned off the battlefield with various barriers, but it is only a matter of time before those barriers start to come down. Then, they will have a difficult time avoiding being overwhelmed. In some ways, it appears that their best chance at this point lies with the fire elemental.

Unless Yusef can do something about Thelma's control over her undead minions from here.

Moving quickly, Yusef covers the remaining ground between him and his great-aunt. He suspects that the bone staff she holds has something to do with the undead she's created. Thus, he decides to try to separate her from it, just as he attempted with Baracus and his sword. Hopefully, she will prove to not be as strong as he.

Sherra is running out of time. Due to Validar closing the distance, the drow are alerted. She has oil on the floor, but isn't quite ready to spring the trap. She has no choice now, otherwise the drow will detect the oil and burn Validar if he doesn't slip on the mess first.

Praying silently to Tymora, Sherra wills her armor back to its normal state, causing her to become visible (hopefully) to Validar in the dim light. The drow might see her as well, although she is slightly outside of their view (she hopes). She will try to get the oil lit, hoping that Validar makes sense of her plan before barrelling past her and into the now-alert drow.

Sir Acerion:

Yusef, realizing that he can’t seem to harm Lord Baracus, attempts to disarm the undead Hextorite from his weapon. The attempt is partially successful as Yusef blocks and pins the blood-red sword. However, the Priest of Celestian finds Lord Baracus’ strength to be formidable. He is too strong to force the blade from his hands.

Lord Baracus’ eyes light up with inhuman glee when they see Sir Acerion approach. “What is this? An enemy of Hextor? One side, demonling! I have a real foe to destroy!”

As Acerion finishes his climb he sees Yusef... conversing... with the woman. His actions against the Hextorite are seemingly no more effective than a small boy trying to fight off an armored knight. Acerion can't quite understand why he would be engaging in conversation with the woman unless...

Now here is conversation Acerion can understand! He awaits the arrival of his foe, grim determination on his face as he readies his holy axe. Acerion scores the first hit, and it is deep, but the Hextor slug seems to be completely unphased.

He steals a glimpse at Yusef and the woman and they are still doing nothing but talking. Yusef doesn't appear happy about the subject of the conversation, but that could mean anything. Turning his attention back to the foe in front of him, he prepares to strike deep once more. Whether it be one, two or a dozen more blows that are needed, the paladin is more than ready to lay this foe out. Acerion just hopes he won't find himself battling three enemies...

Argent:

Argent’s Ice Storm deals more damage to the horde down below, further reducing their numbers. As she hovers in place, Argent sees the wand attacks approaching. Trying to remain calm, she instructs her tiara to absorb the magic. Unexpectedly, a third attack is fired, a bluish ray. But the tiara absorbs this as well.

“Thank Mystra!” Argent gratefully thinks.

Using the absorbed spell energy, Argent uses it to power a Fireball, firing it back into the room where the wand attacks originated. The Fireball explodes, surely seriously wounding if not killing the attackers.

With that taken care of, Argent turns her attention back to the horde of undead down below. She’ll hit those approaching with Otiluke’s Acid Cloud.

(how many layers of Stoneskin does Chareos have left?)

Chareos barely feels the impact of the Undead’s attacks, his stoneskin saving him from any damage they can dish out. Though the spell does not last forever. Chareos grips his Quarterstaff and strikes out twice wounding some two of the creatures but still they come on.

Chareos will continue to swat the undead with his quarterstaff, hoping they fall before him quickly so that he may draw his Frostbrand and deal with the threat as they come.

Baron Validar -

Validar reaches the front of the store as more attacks go off around him. Another Lightning Bolt can be heard sailing over his head and erupting into the ground, as a fiery explosion nearly blows the roof off the building next to him.

He turns to see Argent hovering nearby and briefly raises his sword in her direction in salute for a job well done. "She did indeed have a plan," Validar muses to himself, as the next building erupts further in flames. The thought enters his mind that he needs to keep her happy enough to stay around, as she is quite the formidable invoker.

Moving on, the Baron enters the store and quickly locates the stairwell in the back of the building. He rushes up the stairs, hoping to be able to engage the enemy before they have a chance to do more damage to the group or before they can retreat.

Suddenly, as he reaches the top of the stairs and dashes down the hallway towards the front of the building, he sees the outline of someone kneeling before the door. The smell of oil fills his nose as he gets closer and he stops, seeing that it is Sherra. He will then move back from the door a little, once he gets an idea of what she is trying to do.

Once the oil is lit, he will be prepared to hack at anything trying to flee out of the room.

Up near Crysania, the orcs summoned by Lyonessa disappear underneath a wave of undead. Lyonessa’s next spell attempt is too late to save them. However, the undead inflicted by Confusion do respond. A few just stand there confused, while other undead attack each other!

Her summoned orcs never really had a chance and Lyonessa watches as they succumb to the tide of undead. Her Confusion spell goes off and she is elated at the success of it. Let them thin their own numbers she thinks.

After casting her Spike Growth spell, Ivy looks around to see where she is needed most. To her left, Sir Corley and Lord Chareos stand. A large metal wall protects them. To the right Crysania stands alone against the undead. However some of the monsters are fighting each other! Strange.

Lyonessa catches Ivy's questioning look as she watches the undead fighting themselves. "That was me," she offers with a smile.

Her remaining spells are either non-combat or single target. Hardly anything left of any use against such a horde. Lyonessa will cast Spiritual Hammer and use it against any undead that push through the other spells.

Post Continued:

In the barn loft Lord Baracus battles Sir Acerion. The undead Hextorite's face is flushed with rage, as if he’s lost any measure of self-control. Sir Acerion lands another devastating blow on the Hextorite, but it does not slow him down. Another thrust from the blood-red sword is avoided. Sir Acerion connects yet again, his holy weapon biting deep. But nothing comes from the wounds, no fluids of any kind.

Lord Baracus finally does connect and the damage is painful, but the after-effects are even worse. The sword ignites the blood from the wound and it burns! Ignoring the pain, Sir Acerion continues to attack.

Nearby, Yusef tentatively moves closer to Thelma Deville, his Great-Aunt.
Stepping closer, Yusef looks out over the grounds below where his new friends are battling Thelma's creations. "They are quite something, Aunt Thelma. I can see how they would suit your plans quite well." Even with the darkness in his own soul, Yusef is bothered by the inexorability and gruesomeness of her plan. “Not my plans,” Thelma states. “It was Lord Baracus’ goal to create the perfect undead warrior to serve Hextor; a force so powerful that only the strongest would survive. It would weed out all the weaklings. I only helped make his dream come true.”

“It was Abigail who suggested using this town for the test, or rather Krazzora, as she prefers to be called these days. It seems obvious now that she wanted our undead to eliminate those who just arrived. It appears that your companions are more than up to the task of destroying our creations. So be it.”

Yusef inches his way closer and Thelma does not appear to be on guard at all. He reaches out and with a quick motion takes her staff!

“You do not have the ability to make use of my staff,” Thelma emotionlessly explains. “Return it immediately.”

Outside the fighting continues.

Argent casts Otiluke’s Acid Cloud and a crystalline sphere holding a yellowish-brown mist appears. The invoker tosses this down towards the horde of undead below. The crystalline sphere shatters and a cloud of acid is unleashed! Anything within the 30’ wide cloud is bathed in acid and begins to dissolve. Those undead who do emerge have partially dissolved and only go a few more feet before succumbing to the acid’s effects.

Nearby, Crysania continues to attack with her magical battleaxe. Two more of the undead fall thanks to her skill. Crysania’s defenses hold and none of the undead attacking her actually harm her.

Ivy comes up behind Crysania and Turns Undead once more. Nine of the monstrosities are destroyed. Lyonessa lends a hand and hits one of the undead with a Spiritual Hammer. The undead still stands and begins to run towards Lyonessa!

Sir Corley and Chareos continue to hold the other line. The young knight takes out two more of the enemies, while Chareos clubs down the two he hit earlier. About eight more of the creatures remain. They attack, but Sir Corley’s armor protects him from harm. Chareos’ Stoneskin blocks two more attacks.

Standing behind them, Serena casts a Web spell between the buildings to the south, creating yet another barrier for the undead to circumvent.

On the second floor of the nearby General Store, Sherra was preparing a trap for the drow wand wielders when Validar came rushing along. The noise he made drew the attention of the drow. (Plus they saw him enter the store a few moments ago.)

What they are surprised to see is another one already there. One drow moves to get a better view down the hallway and spots Sherra as she tries to ignite the oil! The drow fires its wand and a bluish ray issues forth that just narrowly misses Sherra!

Sherra then gets a spark and the oil ignites! As that is happening, a second drow comes into view and she fires her wand. A forked bolt of lightning streaks down the corridor engulfing both Sherra and Validar! Sherra takes some damage, while the Baron is again unaffected. The flames from the oil begin to burn hotter and brighter.

Baron Validar -

Rushing the enemy wand wielders, Validar is surprised to see Sherra already there. Unfortunately, the enemy appears as well, perhaps a bit shocked by Sherra's presence as well as his own, so soon.

The dark elves fire a wand and miss Sherra, likely due to her unexpected presence. Another fires a Lightning Bolt down the hall, which is impossible to avoid. Perhaps these are not actually Lightning Bolts, as Validar feels nothing as it passes through him. He feels no different in fact, so does not give it much more concern at the moment.

At that point, Sherra gets the oil lit and it bursts into flames. Apparently, now their two plans have managed to cancel each out. The enemy can stay behind the fire and possibly shoot their wands, at least until the flames force them to try and exit the building. Otherwise, Validar will have to rush through the fire to get to the enemy.

Considering his options, the Baron moves forward with the intent to slam the door shut on them, trapping them inside. He considers rushing them as well, but these are not the true enemy and not to be wasted time with. Argent managed to take out the building next over and hopefully can do so again.

Moving over to Sherra, he will use his sword to shove the door closed and then grab her and pull her to her feet. "It seems I ruined your plan. For that I apologize. Argent can deal with these riff-raff more easily than we now. Go, I will be right behind you. Tell Argent to blow up the building when you get outside."

Validar will follow behind Sherra, but linger long enough to make sure the drow do not exit the door. If they try to rush out, he will attack them. Otherwise, wait a few moments and then rush down the stairs.

So Lord Baracus is in charge, and Thelma's serving him?! This comes as something of a surprise to Yusef; hard to imagine great-aunt Thelma serving under an undead, no matter how powerful.

It seems Abigail had something of a hand in this as well, and apparently the delegation from Pyris was expected. Will they also be expecting the attack on the vacation house? Hard to say at this point.
Thelma wrote:“You do not have the ability to make use of my staff,” Thelma emotionlessly explains. “Return it immediately.”
"I don't think so, Thelma," Sullivan says calmly. He considers trying to throw it to Argent, who he has seen flying about, but doubts she'd be able to hear him over the din of battle. Instead, he tosses it behind him and moves to grapple his great-aunt.

Yusef hopes that by getting control of her arms, he can prevent her from casting spells. Then he can use his forehead and legs to attack. Still, he doesn't really want to kill her. Better to let Validar and the others decide what to do with her once she's subdued.

Argent:

“Gruesome,” Argent mutters upon seeing the effects of the Acid Cloud.

The horde seems to be thinning out considerably now. Seeing, this Argent moves to her left, back towards the others. Since the undead are more in a line now, she’ll cast Lightning Bolt down their ranks, placing it just safely to the north of Crysania.

If there is enough spell energy left in her Tiara, she’ll use that before losing Lightning Bolt from memory. If not, then she’ll just cast the spell as normal.

Lyonessa catches Ivy's questioning look as she watches the undead fighting themselves. "That was me," she offers with a smile.
Ivy catches Lyonessa saying that she was the cause of the undead fighting amongst themselves as she rushes to back up Crysania. Ivy nods her understaning as she dashes past.

Once reaching Crysania, Ivy uses her power to Turn Undead once more. Unless directly attacked, Ivy will continue to Turn the enemy, destroying them.

Crysania

Crysania:

Crysania becomes aware of noise behind her, but dares not look. Seeing undead blasted away, she can only assume that it's Ivy as her sect has great strength against the unliving. Crys continues to hack away with her battle-axe.

Serena

Serena:

After casting her Web, Serena notes that only a handful of the creatures remain on this flank. However, looking to the other flank, she sees one of the creatures rushing Lyonessa!

“Hold fast, Lyonessa! I’ll deal with this rabble.”

Serena will cast Magic Missile at the advancing undead.

“I would be remiss to allow one of my sisters in magic to fall to such a foul creation!”

time to go...

Sherra:
What they are surprised to see is another one already there. One drow moves to get a better view down the hallway and spots Sherra as she tries to ignite the oil! The drow fires its wand and a bluish ray issues forth that just narrowly misses Sherra!

Sherra then gets a spark and the oil ignites! As that is happening, a second drow comes into view and she fires her wand. A forked bolt of lightning streaks down the corridor engulfing both Sherra and Validar! Sherra takes some damage, while the Baron is again unaffected. The flames from the oil begin to burn hotter and brighter.
Sherra clenches her teeth as the lightning bolt hits her. She loses control of her muscles for a second as the electricity courses through her. However, the oil is lit and Sherra has no reason to stick around any longer.
"Actually it was spur of the moment and I wasn't sure it would work," Sherra reveals after being hauled up to her feet.

Validar doesn't have to tell her a second time as she has no desire to be hit with a second lightning bolt. Sherra makes for the stairs without worrying about whether Validar will be following. Once she emerges outside, she will do her best to get Argent's attention.

Acerion

Post by Acerion »

Sir Acerion:

The pain from the Hextorite's blade burns Acerion deeply. He fights through the pain and takes a quick accounting of his foe's wounds. Baracus seems unaffected by the blows landed so far, but the paladin is not detered.

He swings his axe again, not succumbing to the mindless frenzy of his opponent. If he has to hack the Hextorite in tiny pieces to stop his attacks, then that is what Acerion shall do.

Chareos

Chareos hears Corley shout of now is the time to deal with these creatures and give themselves a small reprieve. A growl forms low in his voice as he readies his quarterstaff once again to strike these ugly arse abominations.

Lyonessa:

Ivy comes up behind Crysania and Turns Undead once more. Nine of the monstrosities are destroyed. Lyonessa lends a hand and hits one of the undead with a Spiritual Hammer. The undead still stands and begins to run towards Lyonessa!

“Hold fast, Lyonessa! I’ll deal with this rabble.”

Serena will cast Magic Missile at the advancing undead.

“I would be remiss to allow one of my sisters in magic to fall to such a foul creation!”

Lyonessa is a bit startled when Serena calls out, but she understands and holds her ground. She takes the moment to see if any are severely wounded, but it doesn't appear to be so. So instead, she will send her Spiritual Hammer against any remaining undead.
