Elfquest #18

The elves are reunited back at the Griffon Stable. They spend the evening relaxing and preparing for the day to come. The four recovered medallions are placed in the chest where the Star Crown was found. This is stored on the barge, which is then levitated above the deck and made invisible. The key will travel with the explorers, concealed in the food book found earlier in the chest.

Kylie notes that Robin has been keeping a low profile.
Once she goes looking for him, Kylie does indeed find their diminutive friend. "Hi, Robin! Good to see you're still about. I hope you didn't get too bored while we were gone."
“Bored? Oh goodness gracious no. There’s been so much to see and explore! We brownies spend most of our lives trying not to be noticed, that it’s just natural to us now.”

Before turning in for the evening, Kylie tries an experiment.
An idea occurs to Kylie, so she goes into the stables where the griffins are resting. Approaching the one she rode over the last couple days, Kylie casts Comprehend Languages while stroking the large avian. "Hello," she says in elvish. "Do you have a name?"
The griffon responds, but the words don’t make any sense to Kylie. They come out badly garbled and meaningless.

(Comprehend Languages allows the caster to understand the tongues spoken by other intelligent beings. Or in other words it allows the caster to understand languages that they can possibly learn on their own, such as Alphatian. Griffon speak is not a language unto itself and cannot be learned. Valena’s talent is an innate magic-like ability that’s a limited form of Speak with Animals. It wouldn’t help her, for instance, speak to another person who only speaks a different language.)

Morning comes and the group departs the griffon stables by way of the concealed stairs that lead to the forest floor. Nariya leads the way accompanied by her cooshee companions. The other cooshee’s stay close to their friends as you move along. Onyx takes his usual place on the back on one of Laucian’s cooshee’s. The cooshee’s decide that Robin is all right and do not mind his presence, like they do with Sherwood. One will even allow the brown to ride on his back like it was a mount.

The group makes good progress as they follow along the outskirts of the large clearing with the hidden geysers. They circle the furthest point north and now begin to move on more easterly course towards the Chimera stone. The trip is easy for most everyone involved. The slowest among you turns out to be Sherwood. After a small break for lunch, the group continues on their journey deeper into the elfin forest.

The forest floor is much like what any elf would expect. There’s an abundance of shrubs and plants down here, even though there is very little sunlight. Plants bearing eatable fruits are commonplace.

By late afternoon you reach the general area that Robin spoke of.

“We’re looking for a rock formation here in the forest. The Chimera Stone is inside a small cave in the hillside.”

After about an hour of searching, the small rocky hill is discovered and everyone moves closer. As you approach, you all spot movement near the front of the cave. You catch a glimpse of three heads being pulled back into the cave! Sherwood will swear that it looked like a real chimera!

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Kylie:

As the meeting draws to a close, Kylie speaks up. "A moment, please." Reaching into her enchanted Girdle, Kylie draws forth four gems and lays them on the table. "I snatched these from the fire giant's chest while searching for the medallion. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to split them up among us." All are large, quality stones. There are two amethysts, one aquamarine and one black pearl. The latter two appear to be especially valuable.

---
Robin wrote:“Bored? Oh goodness gracious no. There’s been so much to see and explore! We brownies spend most of our lives trying not to be noticed, that it’s just natural to us now.”
Kylie smiles; Robin reminds her a bit of Rat. "Did you find anything noteworthy? I have no doubt that there are many secrets to be discovered in an ancient elven town like this."

---
The griffon responds, but the words don’t make any sense to Kylie. They come out badly garbled and meaningless.
Her attempt to talk with the griffin proves fruitless as she cannot understand it's response. "I'm sorry; I don't understand. The spell did not work in the way I anticipated." She considers trying her ESP spell, but doesn't hold out much hope of it working any better.

---

After a good sleep, Kylie spends the rest of the night updating her spell arsenal. One of the spells she memorizes is Stoneskin, which she casts on herself immediately. This will free up that slot for a different spell tomorrow night, unless something happens to remove that protection.

Following breakfast, Kylie prepares to leave, as they have a long way to go. She wears her new elven chainmail under the new clothes she found on her bed the previous night. When they set out, Nariya takes the lead with her cooshee friends. Kylie follows along somewhere in the middle, with Dapple close by.

As they travel through the forest, Kylie moves up to Lia. "I found these clothes on my bed last night. Do you have any idea where they might have come from?" If Lia cannot help her, Kylie will have to try someone else.

Upon reaching the area where they believe the chimera stone to be, the group spreads out a bit to search. Even so, they remain close enough to be able to communicate. After about an hour, word comes that a likely his has been located, so they gather together again. When they get closer, several heads are seen to disappear back into small cave! Sherwood says it looked like a live chimera to him.

"A live chimera? Perhaps it is the guardian of the medallion. Though, it seems strange that the inhabitants of the forest, such as Robin, didn't know there was a live chimera living among them. From what I have heard of chimera, we should approach cautiously."

Sherwood:
"If you were to stay with them long enough, that might change," Nariya offers, although really there is little hope from that from what she knows. "Or maybe if you were to handle one from a newborn litter..." she thinks suddenly, wondering if that would be an option.
“I appreciate what you’re trying to do, Nariya,” Sherwood responds, “I really do. But I’ve never really had the need or desire to have my own animal companions. Back in Cynalon I’m always teleporting here, teleporting there that it would be more of a hindrance than a help. I guess I’m too much of a loner.”
"Really?" Kylie says, amazement in her voice. It's hard for her to conceive of catching up to Sherwood in magical skill. "I never thought I'd get anywhere near your prowess with spell casting. I must admit that spell selection is still pretty vexing, but I think I'm learning."
“Yes, it’s true. I know one level of spells beyond what you are just starting to learn. Advancement is usually pretty quick to reach where you are at now, but once you reach where I’m currently at, it slows down considerably. It’s like there is a huge gulf between where I’m at to reach the spells beyond. It’s this span that separates those who dabble with true masters of spell craft, such as Jallarzi and Sharadin. It’s been quite a long time since I’ve accessed a whole new level of spells.”

The next morning, we set out to find the Chimera Stone. Nariya leads the way accompanied by her cooshee’s. The others are spread out amongst the group. Sherwood is amazed to see Onyx riding on the back of a cooshee, and then later Robin! Maybe they are a bit friendlier the Sherwood was originally led to believe. Late in the afternoon we reach the general area and find something of interest. A small cave in a rocky hill. Amazingly, what appears to be the heads of a real life chimera are seen going inside!
Kylie wrote:"A live chimera? Perhaps it is the guardian of the medallion. Though, it seems strange that the inhabitants of the forest, such as Robin, didn't know there was a live chimera living among them. From what I have heard of chimera, we should approach cautiously."
“Yes, that’s right,” Sherwood agrees. “There was a chimera shaped stone here, not a real chimera. It might have just been an illusion, as we know that recovering this medallion is some sort of test. Let’s proceed cautiously.”

To those who ask what a chimera is, Sherwood says, “It’s superficially similar to a griffon, but I doubt it’ll be friendly. It has the front and body of a lion, but with wings and two extra heads. One head is like a dragon that breathes fire and it has dragon-like wings. The other head is like a that of a goat and the hindquarters of the beast are goat-like.”

“I’ll take the point. Everyone else spread out, just in case it is the real thing.”

With Lifeshield in full defense mode, Sherwood advances cautiously towards the cave.
I do what is necessary.

“That reminds me,” Lilia adds. “I retrieved some coins along with the scrolls when we were trying to find the Griffon Medallion. Since we have no way to spend them at the present time, I’d would suggest just holding on to them for now as a group fund. Put them in the chest with the medallions and worry about them later.”

The next day we are off once more, on foot this time. It feels good to be moving through the elfin forest in this manner. Lady is close by as we move along and Lilia finds that she is glad for this. Progress could be faster in the Elf Maiden’s opinion, but with any group they can only move as fast as their slowest member. Surprisingly, this turns out to be Sherwood.

We reach the area where the Chimera Stone is believed to be and after searching finally find it.

Lilia will cast Detect Evil and Detect Invisibility before nearing the cave.

Kylie wrote:"You know, it's reaching the point where I'm starting to wonder if I really need a protector, but either way he seems to be a great companion." The truth is, with her skills growing the way they are, Kylie's starting to feel a lot more confident and capable than before.
“That’s wonderful for you,” Talen compliments. “Perhaps I’ll be able to say that someday. Right now, I’m not all the great at anything.”

Talen is very pleased to see Kylie wearing the tunic he gave her the night before and will compliment her.

“You’re looking very nice this morning, Kylie.”

Talen gets a good nights sleep and is up and ready to go the next morning. It feels good to be traveling in such a large group and with the cooshee’s. Near late afternoon we reach the area where Robin believes the Chimera Medallion to be. Soon a cave is discovered and a multi-headed creature spotted. Sherwood believes it to be a real chimera!
To those who ask what a chimera is, Sherwood says, "It's superficially similar to a griffon, but I doubt it'll be friendly. It has the front and body of a lion, but with wings and two extra heads. One head is like a dragon that breathes fire and dragon-like wings. The other head is like a that of a goat and the hindquarters of the beast are goat-like."
“That sounds quite hideous,” Talen notes. “Who would create such a nightmarish thing?”

Sherwood orders us to proceed and Talen slips towards the back of the group with the cooshee’s.

Kylie wrote:"He told you that? You really can understand them. That's a fascinating ability. Does that come from your devotion to Ehlonna, or is it a trained skill you learned somewhere?”
“I’ve always loved all kinds of animals and during my training the Lady of the Forests granted me the ability to understand them,” Valena explains. “It typically only works on normal animals, but it seems that I can understand even more fantastical creatures here in the Sylvan Realm such as the narwhale, the roc, and the griffons. Most likely due to the elfin influence in them, I’m guessing.”

Valena spends all her free time play with and speaking to the numerous animal companions at the stable.

We’re off the next day and Aerie is allowed to fly free and scout ahead. No dangers are encountered, but none were seriously expected from what we’ve seen thus far in the Sylvan Realm. A cave is located and what appears to be the heads of a real chimera is spotted! Valena pulls an arrow from her quiver and has it ready to fire. She’ll move off to one side as the group moves toward the cave, ready to cover them with bow fire if need be.

Laucian

Following Nariya into the forest Laucian takes up his position the two cooshees that befriended him close by, Onyx laying on top of the male. ‘Always sleeping.’ He says quietly as Onyx gives a yawn and curls up into a ball once again. Gently reaching out he strokes the cat gently as it gently purrs.

As there travels take them through the wood Laucian can’t help but look back at the others, he is slightly proplexed to see Sherwood falling behind. Taking himself out of the column Laucian will move at Sherwood’s pace for company sake as well as to give Sherwood a chane to possibly interact with the Cooshee a bit more.

Lia

The forest floor is much like what any elf would expect. There’s an abundance of shrubs and plants down here, even though there is very little sunlight. Plants bearing eatable fruits are commonplace.

As Lia walks through the forest she sees many fruits and flowering plants she has not seen before. Reaching out she takes an apple and looks at it then polishes it off and eats it.

With her cooshee beside her she wonders if the elfin dog plays like any other and absently throws a stick to see if the cooshee will go get it.

As they travel through the forest, Kylie moves up to Lia. "I found these clothes on my bed last night. Do you have any idea where they might have come from?" If Lia cannot help her, Kylie will have to try someone else.

Lia stifles a laugh as Kylie comes up and asks about the clothes. As her smile subsides Lia will point out, “I know not, though there were only four of us that went into market. Two are speaking at the moment, and Lilia left soon after we arrived. That only leaves one in which might do such a thing.” Looking back at her brother. He fancies you.” She says with a smile though she soon finds herself saying, but doesn’t know why, “Don’t hurt him.”

“Yes, that’s right,” Sherwood agrees. “There was a chimera shaped stone here, not a real chimera. It might have just been an illusion, as we know that recovering this medallion is some sort of test. Let’s proceed cautiously.”

Lia can’t help but ask, “A Chimera? What is a chimera?” and her answer is soon heard.

Drawing her long sword and walking beside Sherwood , “I may be able to tell if it is an Illusion or not. I will try my best to let you know before it attacks.” She says as she moves off and back. As she nears closer to the cave Lia will try and detect if the Chimera is indeed a illusion.
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Nariya:

“I appreciate what you’re trying to do, Nariya,” Sherwood responds, “I really do. But I’ve never really had the need or desire to have my own animal companions. Back in Cynalon I’m always teleporting here, teleporting there that it would be more of a hindrance than a help. I guess I’m too much of a loner.”

"Well, if maybe you were to ever get out and walk more, you might actually enjoy companionship," Nariya says playfully before letting the matter drop.

Morning comes and the group departs the griffon stables by way of the concealed stairs that lead to the forest floor. Nariya leads the way accompanied by her cooshee companions.

Finally we are underway and by Nariya's favorite mode of transportation! She is exhilirated as she picks the fastest ways to get us where we need to be. The cooshees aren't far away and it feels great to have such company.

Stealing a glance back, she sees Onyx on the back of one of the cooshees. Catching Laucian's eye, Nariya smiles and shakes her head in amazement at the sight.

Nariya points out the hill to any who haven't spotted it yet and then moves closer. She thinks she sees something, but isn't sure if she believes her eyes. Was that an actual chimera?!

"Yes, that's right," Sherwood agrees. "There was a chimera shaped stone here, not a real chimera. It might have just been an illusion, as we know that recovering this medallion is some sort of test. Let's proceed cautiously."

“I am in agreement,” Lilia adds. “Hold a moment and I’ll prepare some spells that might help.”

Nariya readies a spear as Lilia and the others prepare. Moving forward cautiously, she will be ready to set the spear in case the chimera is real and charges them.

Lia wrote:With her cooshee beside her she wonders if the elfin dog plays like any other and absently throws a stick to see if the cooshee will go get it.
The cooshee watches Lia with interest as it tosses the stick. The large dog watches it land and then looks back at Lia as if to say, “Why did you do that?”

Those traveling with the cooshee’s for the first time will be amazed just how silently these large dogs move through the forest, much like the elves they run with.

Near later afternoon, the explorers locate the small cave that holds the Chimera Stone. As the group approaches, the heads of a real life chimera are seen going into the cave. Warily the explorers move closer with Sherwood leading the way. Lilia casts several detection spells, but they reveal nothing amiss. Lia tries to detect any illusions, but likewise comes up empty.

Suddenly, Sherwood stops in his advance towards the cave. It’s as if he’s frozen and no amount of prodding will cause him to stir. A voice in elfish is heard first by Lia, but then everyone else hears it.

The voice says, “Welcome Children of Corellon Larethian.” The voice seems to be coming from the cave.

GM Notes:
I didn't see that in the description of the spell, so it seemed like a reasonable possibility at the time. <shrug>
As is often the case with D&D spells, just because it doesn’t say something can’t be done, that does not mean it can be either. This exact situation has never come up before, so I don’t have any past rulings to fall back on. So I examined the situation as logically as I could, as this could potentially be a ruling with wide ranging implications.

Comprehend Languages deals with both spoken and written languages and that seems to be the key. This indicated to me that a certain level of intelligence is needed here, as animal intelligent creatures do not have written languages. Thus is seemed reasonable that the spell would only work with those languages that the caster could actually learn.

Secondly, I compared the spell against other spells that actually does what was attempted. Speak with Animals is the obvious one, and while it is a cleric spell, it is still higher in level than Comprehend Languages. A lower level spell should never give you the full benefit of a higher-level spell, even if they are in different classes.

Given that mages are not strongly associated with animals, as some clerics are, and rangers definitely are, it seems more than reasonable that a regular mage spell wouldn’t allow communication with animals. Even though these are special griffons, they are still of animal level intellects. Familiars not withstanding of course, but that’s part of the spell that bonds the two together and it doesn’t extend to any other animal. This seperation is further illustrated, as there does not appear to be a clerical spell that mimics the effects of Comprehend Languages.

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Kylie:
Robin wrote:“A few good places to hide, some crumbs of food. What more could a brownie ask for?”
"Lots and lots of food?" Kylie suggests with a smile and a laugh. "I'm glad you're okay."
Sherwood wrote:“Yes, it’s true. I know one level of spells beyond what you are just starting to learn. Advancement is usually pretty quick to reach where you are at now, but once you reach where I’m currently at, it slows down considerably. It’s been quite a long time since I’ve accessed a whole new level of spells.”
While she understands it on an intellectual level, the truth is still a little hard for her to grasp emotionally. Sherwood was the mage who first noted her potential and arranged for her training with his cousin Jallarzi. In her mind, he was a powerful mage, nearly on a level with Jallarzi, and it's hard to imagine that she might already be catching up with him.

"You're right, of course. Still, I'm sure you'll reach that next plateau far sooner than I will. In truth, I'm not sure I'll ever get there; I suspect I'll always be one of those dabblers you mentioned."
Talen wrote:“That’s wonderful for you,” Talen compliments. “Perhaps I’ll be able to say that someday. Right now, I’m not all the great at anything.”
Kylie laughs. "I know what you mean. When I was first drafted by Sherwood to join his new group, I hardly knew up from down. I've learned a lot over the past few months, and I'm sure you will too."
Lilia wrote:“That reminds me,” Lilia adds. “I retrieved some coins along with the scrolls when we were trying to find the Griffon Medallion. Since we have no way to spend them at the present time, I’d would suggest just holding on to them for now as a group fund. Put them in the chest with the medallions and worry about them later.”
"That makes sense," Kylie says with a nod. Still, there is a hint of reluctance as she allows the black opal to drop last into the chest...
Valena wrote:“I’ve always loved all kinds of animals and during my training the Lady of the Forests granted me the ability to understand them,” Valena explains. “It typically only works on normal animals, but it seems that I can understand even more fantastical creatures here in the Sylvan Realm such as the narwhale, the roc, and the griffons. Most likely due to the elfin influence in them, I’m guessing.”
"So could you find out if the griffons have names? It would be nice to use the right names for them if they have them."
Talen wrote:“You’re looking very nice this morning, Kylie.”
"Oh. Uh... Thank you," Kylie replies self-consciously. "It was weird; these clothes just appeared in my room last night during dinner and Sherwood's planning meeting. I have no idea where they came from." Kylie raises her palms before herself in a helpless shrug.
Lia wrote:Lia stifles a laugh as Kylie comes up and asks about the clothes. As her smile subsides Lia will point out, “I know not, though there were only four of us that went into market. He fancies you.” She says with a smile though she soon finds herself saying, but doesn’t know why, “Don’t hurt him.”
Kylie's not quite sure what to make of Lia's laugh, unsure if she's being mocked. Still, she makes a good point regarding the likely instigator and Kylie looks back over her shoulder at Talen for a moment. However, Lia's last two comments grab her attention and she swivels her head back.

"Really?... Yes, of course. I should have seen it sooner.

"I'm just not sure how I feel about him, yet. I will try to be... careful, though I don't have much experience in this area..."

---
Sherwood wrote:“Yes, that’s right,” Sherwood agrees. “There was a chimera shaped stone here, not a real chimera. It might have just been an illusion, as we know that recovering this medallion is some sort of test. Let’s proceed cautiously.”
Kylie shrugs. "Perhaps it was a real chimera that had been turned to stone, and only recently somehow reverted to flesh...? Anything's possible, I suppose..."
Laucian wrote:“One who is vile, evil and does not cherish the laws of nature.” He says flatly as he draws his bow and knocks an arrow to it. He will move oppisite of Valena. Keeping a trained eye on the cave, At first sign of attack, Laucian will have his bow up and ready for an open shot.
Kyile thinks she detects a note of anger or disgust in Laucian's tone. It seems this is not just a biological oddity to those trained in nature's service.
Sherwood wrote:“I’ll take the point. Everyone else spread out, just in case it is the real thing.”
Followind Sherwood's instructions, Kylie moves off to his right and back a bit. As he advances, she does likewise to maintain her position relative to him. Feeling a bit nervous, she remains ready to cast Invisibility on herself at the first sign of real danger.

Seeing Sherwood suddenly stop, Kylie looks at him quizzically for a moment, then steps closer. Tapping him on the arm, she asks, "Sherwood? You okay?"

Then she hears the voice, and stops. "Hello," Kylie replies. "Uhm, who are you?"

Didn't Sherwood say that Lifeshield protects him from all magic? And yet, he appears magically frozen, a little voice whispers in the back of her mind. Something about this makes Kylie very nervous.

Not a problem. I know the spell descriptions are often incomplete. Unfortunately, that's all I have to go by and it said something about affecting "creatures". Figured it was worth a try.

Nariya is ready with her spear, and then she hears a welcoming voice. "Well that's not entirely what I was expecting.." she mutters.

Then she spots Sherwood, frozen in place! He had said something about being protected by magic. Nariya would scold him if she wasn't so fearful. "Sherwood... Sherwood?!" she calls out.

Sherwood:
Nariya wrote:"Well, if maybe you were to ever get out and walk more, you might actually enjoy companionship," Nariya says playfully before letting the matter drop.
“Perhaps,” Sherwood agrees with a small chuckle. “Unfortunately, leisurely travel seems to be something I never have the time to do.”
Kylie wrote:"You're right, of course. Still, I'm sure you'll reach that next plateau far sooner than I will. In truth, I'm not sure I'll ever get there; I suspect I'll always be one of those dabblers you mentioned."
“I think I’ve still got a while to go yet, but yes, someday I will reach that plateau. As for you reaching it, that will depend on how much you want to sacrifice. It can be difficult at times to focus on the goal and deal with other distractions. During my years with Dar, I didn’t advance much either. I guess it’s a matter of what is more important to you. Only you can decide just how far you want to go.”
Laucian wrote:As there travels take them through the wood Laucian can’t help but look back at the others, he is slightly perplexed to see Sherwood falling behind. Taking himself out of the column Laucian will move at Sherwood’s pace for company sake as well as to give Sherwood a chance to possibly interact with the Cooshee a bit more.
“You’re built for this sort of thing, I’m not,” Sherwood will offer with a grin.
Kylie wrote:Kylie shrugs. "Perhaps it was a real chimera that had been turned to stone, and only recently somehow reverted to flesh...? Anything's possible, I suppose..."
“Anything is possible,” Sherwood agrees. He steps up to the cave opening and then suddenly, inexplicably freezes in place…

Lilia:

Lilia watches intently, hoping that her spells who reveal something. A voice then calls out.
The voice says, “Welcome Children of Corellon Larethian.” The voice seems to be coming from the cave.
“Hello..?” Lilia tentatively answers while she thinks upon what has transpired. Why was only Sherwood frozen? Why was he singled out from everyone else? How is he different? The answer becomes obvious.

“Remember, Sherwood theorized that this was a test of some kind. It’s now obvious to me just what kind of test it is. Who would our ancestors want to retrieve their medallions? Other elves of course! Therefore, the test is to see if we are elves are not. Sherwood is not an elf, thus he was singled out.”

“Hello,” Lilia calls out again with more confidence in her voice. “We have come to retrieve the Chimera Medallion so that we may find the Mother Tree. Do you have it?”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

“I could find out what the translated version of what they call each other would be. I’m not sure if it would make much sense in our language, but yes, I can try.”

Valena keeps her bow aimed and ready to fire as Sherwood is mysteriously frozen and Kylie and Lilia call out to the mysterious voice.

Talen:
Kylie laughs. "I know what you mean. When I was first drafted by Sherwood to join his new group, I hardly knew up from down. I've learned a lot over the past few months, and I'm sure you will too."
“I hope so,” Talen adds with his own laugh. “I felt so ready to take on the world when we first left the Lost Valley, but I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It’s all so much bigger, so much more wondrous then I ever could have imagined.”
"Oh. Uh... Thank you," Kylie replies self-consciously. "It was weird; these clothes just appeared in my room last night during dinner and Sherwood's planning meeting. I have no idea where they came from." Kylie raises her palms before herself in a helpless shrug.
“Maybe they were a gift?” Talen answers adding his own shrug.

Later he’ll curse himself for not having the courage to say that he left it behind.

At the Chimera Cave, Talen watches as the scene unfolds. “Is Sherwood all right?”

Kylie ponders Sherwood's words for a moment. "I don't know," she says with a shrug. "I'm already farther along than I ever expected to be. I don't have a real strong desire to be a great mage, but I'm too young to predict my future - even if it were possible. In some ways, it seems like I'm just a passenger on the ship of my life."

"My experience has been similar," Kylie adds, starting to see similarities in their lives that she hadn't expected. "I grew up in a slum of Elcadan, and it was all I knew of the world before meeting Rat. He showed me a little of the world and Jallarzi showed me more. Still, I have seen and done things I never imagined since joining Sherwood's group."
Talen wrote:“Maybe they were a gift?” Talen answers adding his own shrug.
Kylie gives Talen a strange look for a moment, unsure what she might have done to deserve a gift or why it would be given anonymously. However, no answers come to her so she lets it drop for the moment.

Lilia voices some of the thoughts racing through Kylie's mind as they reach the cave and are addressed by the voice in their heads. Lilia's reply to the voice is also more direct and practical then her own had been. Hopefully, the voice will give them helpful answers...

Lia
The cooshee watches Lia with interest as it tosses the stick. The large dog watches it land and then looks back at Lia as if to say, “Why did you do that?”

Those traveling with the cooshee’s for the first time will be amazed just how silently these large dogs move through the forest, much like the elves they run with.
“Guess you don’t know that trick.” She said with a laugh as the cooshee looked at her with obvious confusion. Walking through the forest with the cooshee’s beside her she can’t help but wonder just how silently these creatures move for their size, the sudden thought of being on the receiving end of such an advantage creates and eerie picture in her head.

“Most do not always see what lays right before them until it is to late.” She says evenly though with a smile. “You will or you will not. Nor Do I but I know Talenfar better then most. Talen is a good man with a good heart, he may surprise you yet.” She says with a wink. “Give it time.”

Detecting no Illusion, Lia still holds a tight grasp upon her sword as she moves forward a few steps behind Sherwood. Suddenly he stops dead in his tracks much like a statue, “Uncle? Are you well?” but no answer is forth coming. Then a voice soon enters her ear.
The voice says, “Welcome Children of Corellon Larethian.” The voice seems to be coming from the cave.
“Hello,” Lilia calls out again with more confidence in her voice. “We have come to retrieve the Chimera Medallion so that we may find the Mother Tree. Do you have it?”
“It is good to be seen.” She says evenly still gauging the cave for Illusions untrusting of such things. “Though he is no elf in body he is in spirit, He as earned the respect of our people and has been entrusted by our people. Could you please free my Uncle?” she says evenly as she continues to move infront of the non responsive Sherwood.

"Lots and lots of food?" Kylie suggests with a smile and a laugh. "I'm glad you're okay."
“Gracious no,” Robin answers. “We brownies take only what little we need. Most people don’t even realize we are about. That’s the way we like it. I am glad you are okay too.”

The elves have reached the Chimera Cave. Much to their surprise, Sherwood has been frozen in place while a voice speaks to them in elvish. The voice says, “Welcome Children of Corellon Larethian.” The voice seems to be coming from the cave.
Then she hears the voice, and stops. "Hello," Kylie replies. "Uhm, who are you?"
“Hello,” Lilia calls out again with more confidence in her voice. “We have come to retrieve the Chimera Medallion so that we may find the Mother Tree. Do you have it?”
“Yes, I guard the Chimera Medallion for the elves,” the voice answers. “I can give it only to a true elf.”
Lia wrote:“Though he is no elf in body he is in spirit, He as earned the respect of our people and has been entrusted by our people. Could you please free my Uncle?” she says evenly as she continues to move in front of the non-responsive Sherwood.
“I cannot,” the voice answers. “As he is not of the blood of Corellon Larethian. He will not be harmed.”

Looking into the cave, you see that most of it is taken up by a life size statue of the beast Sherwood described to you. It is a chimera, a creature with the front and middle head of a lion, the hindquarters and head of a goat, and the head and wings of a dragon. Embedded into the lion’s forehead is the Chimera Medallion.

“Before you take the Chimera Medallion,” the voice continues in elvish, “you may touch one of my heads and think of a medallion you seek. An image of its location will then appear in your thoughts. This way you will learn the location of three other medallions. Make your choice.”

Now what?
Try it and find out!

"No offense intended," Kylie appologizes. "I just figured everyone would like knowing where their next meal was coming from and not have to go searching for it.

"Yeah, it was a bit tense there for a bit. Fortunately, we managed to give the fire giant and his hellhound pets the slip. Still, it was a bit nerve-wracking."
Chimera wrote:“Yes, I guard the Chimera Medallion for the elves,” the voice answers. “I can give it only to a true elf.”
"Well, that leaves me out," Kylie says with a smirk. "Lilia, Laucian and Nariya are true elves, though."
Chimera wrote:“I cannot,” the voice answers. “As he is not of the blood of Corellon Larethian. He will not be harmed.”
A look of relief crosses Kylie's face at these words. It seems they won't have to fight the source of this voice.

They look into the cave and see the statue that Robin had told them of. It's appearance very much fits Sherwood's description of a chimera. Even from this far away, Kylie can see the medallion embedded in it's forehead - much as the other one had been in the warrior golem.

Kylie cannot help wondering if this one will come to life as well when they touch the medallion...
Chimera wrote:“Before you take the Chimera Medallion,” the voice continues in elvish, “you may touch one of my heads and think of a medallion you seek. An image of its location will then appear in your thoughts. This way you will learn the location of three other medallions. Make your choice.”
That will certainly make things easier! Kylie thinks to herself. Looking over at Laucian, Kylie says, "You're our most skilled woodsman and tracker, Laucian. Perhaps you should touch the heads. We still need some clues as to where the House, Lizard and Justice medallions are. This would get us a lot closer to being able to activating the crystal platform."

This test ensures that only elves will gain this medallion and three others that we have no clues for. Our ancestors were wise to set up these precautions.”

“However, I think it would be wiser to have each of our woods persons touch a chimera head and gain the location of one of the medallions. “Laucian, Nariya and Valena. Would you do the honors?”
Looking toward Lilia he gives her a nod as Valena puts forth her views. “ I for see no reason to object, Valena. This is our ancestral home all here have ties to the land. I will see out the House Medallion, unless Nariya wishes otherwise.”

When the time comes he will put his hand upon one of the Chimera’s head and think of said Medallion.

"You know, when we first met you and your brother, I was suspicious of you both due to your dark elf blood. However, I'm starting to believe that I really need to let go of that. It's not fair, and I've seen nothing from either of you that would dishonor your relationship to Sherwood. Hopefully someday you'll both find it in your hearts to forgive me." Kylie hates the feeling of being wrong, but she knows she was on this matter and it embarrasses her. Perhaps this is part of what growing up is all about.
“You have your reasons for not trusting us, whether founded or unfounded. Sherwood is kin, I would not wish to harm him as I would not wish harm on Talen or myself.” Lia shakes her head for a moment. “There is nothing to forgive, though for the sake of honesty when we first met I was very skeptical of all of you, especially you. I mean no disrespect but you held such hatred for us, there was a time I thought it may come to blows. For that I am sorry.”

As we travel along, Talen notes that Lia and Kylie are spending much time speaking. He can’t help but wonder what they are talking about and the occasional glance back towards him doesn’t help! What kind of trouble is his sister getting him into now?

Lia notices Talen’s nervousness as she turns to look back at him. A playful smile comes across her face just to keep her brother in curiousness, which is not hard to do! With a quick wink to her brother she then turns around as she absently pets the Lone cooshee beside her right side.

“I cannot,” the voice answers. “As he is not of the blood of Corellon Larethian. He will not be harmed.”
Visually frustrated with the answer she was given Lia, stays near Sherwood the voice and others continue to converse. Regardless of a voice saying no harm would come to him, she is still skeptical and stays near Sherwood. With what little family she has left she would not forgive herself if something did happen to Sherwood…

"Spirit Root?" Kylie says pensively. "No, I see why that would not work so well. Perhaps after we return we can talk with them some about what we should call them."
Talen wrote:“It seems we both have a lot to learn,” Talen states. “I just hope we are both worthy of this great task we’ve been entrusted with.”
"Indeed. You and I both," Kylie replies.
Sherwood wrote:“Which is fine, as you are still young,” Sherwood answers. “But at some point you are going to have to steer that ship and only you can set it’s course. Just don’t wait too long.”
Kylie nods. "I know. It just seems like there are constant crises right now, leaving no time to plan and make decisions regarding those kind of larger issues."
Lia wrote:“You have your reasons for not trusting us, whether founded or unfounded.
"Not hatred, but great suspicion," Kylie says. "All my life, in every story I had ever heard that involved dark elves, they were cruel and deceitful and malicious. I suspect you will find that is true everywhere, as the valley you come from is likely quite unique. Very few have heard of it and very few have ever heard of an honorable dark elf. You may even find that there are no others to be found outside your valley."

Kylie notes the face that Lia makes at her brother, and giggles softly. Glancing over her shoulder again, she notes his troubled expression. It seems she is having a little fun at her brother's expense.
Valena wrote:“As I am I,” Valen a speaks up.
"Oh! Sorry," Kylie says, embarrassed. "I didn't mean to leave you out."

Laucian wrote:“It said think of one medallion not all, the other two medallions whereabouts knowledge would be lost if I did such a thing.” He said evenly.
Lilia and Laucian both bring up good points. "I had thought it meant one medallion for each head, but perhaps you are right. Since we have sufficient numbers, it is safer to do as you suggest." It occurs to Kylie that if this is true, one lone elf, or even two, would not be able to collect the clues necessary to gather all of the medallions.

The three elves discuss among themselves which medallions they intend to seek. Then Valena steps forward to be the first to touch the statue.

“Though he is no elf in body he is in spirit, He as earned the respect of our people and has been entrusted by our people. Could you please free my Uncle?” she says evenly as she continues to move in front of the non-responsive Sherwood.

“I cannot,” the voice answers. “As he is not of the blood of Corellon Larethian. He will not be harmed.”

It's a relief to hear that Sherwood will not be harmed. The voice will only allow true elves to gain the medallion. Nariya is glad for that, for it will be one more in our possession.

“However, I think it would be wiser to have each of our woods persons touch a chimera head and gain the location of one of the medallions. Then they can share the information so that all of us know where to search. This way each will only have to memorize one location to memorize before sharing, so they won’t get any details mixed up.”

“Laucian, Nariya and Valena. Would you do the honors?”

"That makes the most sense," Nariya replies to Lilia's wisdom. She could see where suddenly getting the location of three medallions in one's head would be confusing.

“There is wisdom to Lilia’s words,” Valena states. After exchanging glances with Nariya and Laucian, she’ll add, “If neither of you mind, I will ask for the location of the Lizard Medallion.”

Looking toward Lilia he gives her a nod as Valena puts forth her views. “ I for see no reason to object, Valena. This is our ancestral home all here have ties to the land. I will see out the House Medallion, unless Nariya wishes otherwise.”

"I have no objections to either of your choices," Nariya says. "We are all after the same goal here."

That leaves Nariya to get the information on the Justice medallion. She will approach with Valena and Laucian and wait until the appropriate time to touch one of the heads.
Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

Kylie wrote:"Yeah, it was a bit tense there for a bit. Fortunately, we managed to give the fire giant and his hellhound pets the slip. Still, it was a bit nerve-wracking."
"I can only imagine!"

The elves have found the Chimera Medallion, but an unseen force that has frozen Sherwood guards it.
Upon hearing this Laucian slackens his bowstring and return the arrow to his quiver. "Are the affects temporary? When will he be freed?" he asks as he moves closer.
"Yes," the unseen speaker answers. "He will be restored once you claim the Medallion, as my task will be at an end."

The elfin rangers step up to the Chimera Statue. Each touches a different head and each thinks of a different medallion. Almost immediately, images flood into their minds.

Valena sees a small fountain on the top of a low hill. Pure Crystalline water trickles down from the lizard heads all around the center of the fountain.

Laucian sees a small cottage with flowers growing at the windows surrounded by a white picket fence in the middle of a peaceful clearing. In a tree, near the house, a dozen multi-colored birds gently sing a familiar tune, and he can hear the voice of a young maiden signing in the house. Ominously, there are a few statues in the yard of the cottage that seem similar to the troops that Moorkroft uses.

Nariya sees the top of a rocky hill. There a strange plate mounted on a vertical pole, the size of an elf, and it glows with an eerie golden aura. Above the plate is a needle pointing at a graduated line. Lined up at the base of the pole are ten open pouches containing large coins.

The visions come to an end and each knows the general area they need to search.

When the Chimera Medallion is taken, the statue breaks apart and falls to the cave floor in pieces. The effect holding Sherwood fades and he is himself once more. Although, understandably, confused by what just happened.

GM Notes:

The map to the Sylvan Realm has been updated to include the locations of the three medallions.

Now what?

"That sounds very wise. I hope to meet and learn more of you."
Robin wrote:"I can only imagine!"
Kylie laughs. "It was worth it, though. At least we were successful in recovering the medallion there, and the one from the warrior statue."

---

The voice confirms that Sherwood will be released, and the three elves step forward. Touching the heads of the chimera stone for a moment, nothing much seems to happen, at least as far as Kylie can tell. However, the chimera crumbles to the floor, so clearly it's duty is done.

"So, what did you see?" Kylie asks Laucian, Nariya and Valena. "Can you show us the locations on our map?"

Valena:
Kylie wrote:"Spirit Root?" Kylie says pensively. "No, I see why that would not work so well. Perhaps after we return we can talk with them some about what we should call them."
“Given how well they are disposed to us elves, I am sure the griffons would happily respond to what ever names we gave them. Perhaps that is a better way to approach things?”
Kylie wrote:"Oh! Sorry," Kylie says, embarrassed. "I didn't mean to leave you out."
“No offense taken,” Valena easily answers.
Laucian wrote:Looking toward Lilia he gives her a nod as Valena puts forth her views. “ I for see no reason to object, Valena. This is our ancestral home all here have ties to the land. I will see out the House Medallion, unless Nariya wishes otherwise.”
Nariya wrote:"I have no objections to either of your choices," Nariya says. "We are all after the same goal here."

Valena nods her agreement and then touches one of the statue’s heads while thinking of the Lizard Medallion. Images fill her thoughts and once they vanish, she removes her hand and steps away.
Kylie wrote:"So, what did you see?" Kylie asks Laucian, Nariya and Valena. "Can you show us the locations on our map?"
“I saw what appeared to be a fountain on the top of a small hill. Water poured down from spouts shaped like lizard heads. It’s certainly not what I was expecting.”

Once the map is produced, Valena will point out the general area the fountain is located in. After seeing the other locations, Valena adds, “It seems that the closest one is at least a days march away. Might as well camp here for the evening and start out fresh in the morning.”

Sherwood:
Kylie nods. "I know. It just seems like there are constant crises right now, leaving no time to plan and make decisions regarding those kind of larger issues."
That brings a chuckle from Sherwood. “Welcome to my life.”

Sherwood is walking towards the cave opening at moment, in the next everything around him has changed. People who were behind him are now in front and the chimera statue has collapsed!

“What’s going on here?”

After being given an explanation and hearing that the locations of three more medallions, Sherwood studies the map.
Once the map is produced, Valena will point out the general area the fountain is located in. After seeing the other locations, Valena adds, “It seems that the closest one is at least a days march away. Might as well camp here for the evening and start out fresh in the morning.”
“Yes, we’ll camp here for the night and head north in the morning. I think we’ll hit Valena’s fountain first, and then Laucian’s house. From there, I’ll teleport back to the Griffon Stables to retrieve the barge. I’ll then meet up with the rest of you at the strange vision on the hill. From there, we’ll use the Chimera Medallion to the Eagle Medallion. Then we’ll have to find the missing medallions and rescue the centaur foal from Moorkroft. No doubt all of that will be easier said then done.”

Laucian
Reachig his hand to the neck of the lions head, for a moment he only feels the smooth course rock then a flash of light reaches his eyes as the thoughts guide him to what he seeks.

Shaking his head to clear his thoughts Laucian barely hears the words of Kylie, “ A small cottage within a clearing, flowers grow about and the soft voice of a young maiden flows through the air as various birds sing a familiar tune. Though it vexes me there are statues that seem similar to those of Moorkroft’s forces.”

When asked he will mark the spot on the map of the general area of the Medallion.

"Yes," the unseen speaker answers. "He will be restored once you claim the Medallion, as my task will be at an end."

“He’d better be!” she calls back. As she stares at the others as they touch the statue. She waits in anticipation as one by one they remove their hands and reveal what they saw a moment later the statue is no more! The House Medallion does catch her ear and interest but doesn’t voice it.

“You froze up Uncle.” She states simply. “It was a test, where only elves could approach and recover the medallion. The voiced said if we touch the statue we could learn the places of the other medallions. The statue crumbled after that.”

“Are you okay Uncle?”

Nariya:

"So, what did you see?" Kylie asks Laucian, Nariya and Valena. "Can you show us the locations on our map?"

"I saw a rocky hill," Nariya begins. "At the top stood a pole and a plate of some sort upon it. It was glowing golden and there was a needle above the plate. It pointed at a graduated line."

"There were also ten open pouches, each containing large coins, all lined up at the base of the pole," she adds. Nariya will then look at the map and point out the location while the image is fresh in her mind.

Nariya listens to what the others saw and then what Sherwood proposes. It sounds like a decent course of action. After that is decided, she will walk off a short distance after the camp has been set up. It was her first vision, and she remembers the priests of her village speaking of visions they had received before.

Although she normally distains magic, Nariya can't help but feel the awe of what she has experienced. It makes her wonder what else she might be missing due to having a nearly-closed mind on the matter of magic.
Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

To Save Mother Tree!

Kylie:
Valena wrote:“Given how well they are disposed to us elves, I am sure the griffons would happily respond to what ever names we gave them. Perhaps that is a better way to approach things?”
"Uhm... I guess," Kylie replies uncertainly. "If you think so. You are the expert, after all."
Sherwood wrote:That brings a chuckle from Sherwood. “Welcome to my life.”
Somehow, Sherwood's answer isn't very reassuring, though Kylie refrains from saying so. Still, it's nice to hear that even an accomplished wizard like him is beset by some of the same issues.

---

Sherwood is released from the magic which held him, and he is surprised to find things suddenly different than he remembers. Lia gives a quick answer to his question, though not very complete.

"The chimera statue was apparently sentient, though I'm uncertain what happened to the live chimera we saw, as we have not seen it again since entering the cave. The moment we entered, some magical force caused you to cease moving or responding; apparently, you had no sensation of what occurred or even of the passage of time, as we have been here for several minutes. I must say that it concerns me that you were affected by this magic, despite the protection of your sword there.

"The statue spoke to us, using something like telepathy and told us that only true elves could retreive her amulet. She also told us that elves could receive knowledge of the locations of three of the medallions by touching the heads of the statue, which Laucian, Nariya and Valena did. Once that was done and the chimera medallion was retrieved from her forehead, her job was complete and the statue crumbled - which also released you from your magical stasis."

The three elves tell of their visions and point out the locations of the three medallions on their map. Fortunately, they appear to be fairly close to one another, so retrieving them should not require an inordinate amount of time or travel.
Sherwood wrote:“Yes, we’ll camp here for the night and head north in the morning. I think we’ll hit Valena’s fountain first, and then Laucian’s house. Sherwood's plan seems reasonable and Kylie has no questions. However, his comments do spark a thought. "Based on what you all described of the missing medallions you were unable to find, I believe there is a strong possibility that Moorkroft has them as well."
