Eternal Vigilance #63 - "Strange Visitor from Another Planet"

Roll Call: Flux, Tesla, Blackout, Backlash, Frostbite, Powershift, Sea Guard, and Xanaphia


It’s July 4th again, but things are different this time. The Vigilant already exist and events have occurred that did not the previous time. Does this mean that things that happened before will happen again? Or will they also be different? Anyone have a headache yet?

One of there differences is that a silver hair, elfin-like woman has appeared out of the blue on the Starr Building’s rooftop. She says her name is Xanaphia and that she fled to Earth to escape from her father’s empire. The woman is agitated from her talk with Flux and flees. But first she says that she’ll only talk to Tesla. So Xana and Tesla fly off to another rooftop to talk in private. Powershift monitors the pair from a discrete distance.


While all that is going on Backlash escorts Blackout into the Starr Building. It’s a private office building, so there’s not really a lot that can be toured. The Vigilant Base is located 1 mile off shore in the ocean. The main attraction of the Starr Building is that it houses Dr. Marybeth William’s Clinic. It’s a place where metahuman medicine is practiced and the doctor herself has minor superhuman abilities. Mainly low level psionics and the ability to split into two identical beings. When she does that, one of them becomes Mary, the other Beth.

And so Backlashes tour ends up in the clinic, where Sea Guard and Frostbite came earlier. But all is not calm in the clinic..

A soft voice is heard from nearby drawing him from his thoughts. Looking up and about he sees nothing but notes the voice.. Dr Salier? He asks himself as he walks from the room and sees a bright flash that momentarily blinds him. Bringing his hand back from his eyes he finally realizes what the women had said.

Moving toward Dr Williams Office the Ice covered teen barges into her office, almost panting with excitement. “Brother…. Basilisk… Flash…. I think Dr. Salier has done… Something to him!” Not waiting for her reply Frosty will make his way to the room in which the bright flash originated and see what is about.

Looking up in concern, Dr. Williams chases after Frostbite. Both reach the room holding Brother Basilisk. Dr. Salier is stepping out as they arrive.

“I was just coming to see you, Dr. Williams. The patient has been sedated as you directed. I believe he is ready for your probing. If there is nothing else you require I’ll be calling it a day then.”

Dr. Williams looks in the room and Brother Basilisk seems the same as she last saw him. Nothing appears out of the ordinary. “Everything seems to be in order here, Dr. Salier. Have a good holiday.”

Dr. Salier nods and departs. Dr. Williams goes into the room and examines Brother Basilisk more closely. Again, nothing seems amiss.

“Everything here is seems normal,” Dr. Williams tells Frostbite. “Are you sure what you saw?”

After that, Dr. Williams begins her probe into Brother Basilisk mind…


Roll Call: Menagerie & Tilt

Elsewhere Tilt-A-Whirl has been enjoying Menageries family picnic. Later that afternoon, they pile into the family SUV for a ride to watch the evening fire works over the bay.


Now what?

[Tilt-A-Whirl]

Tilt-A-Whirl:

"Great! You're welcome to ride with us." Lily and Donny begin the task of loading the children into Donny's blue SUV. Lance is strapped into his safety seat in the middle row and Rose slides into the back row and buckles her own belt.

cars! oh they're so slow Tilt moans in her head still they were nice to me... Tilt just nods agreeance and finds a seat in the SUV. Hopefully it's not a long drive, but being a holiday... she sees if she can remain distracted with all the people around her.

[Menagerie]

Menagerie:

They are soon underway. In the front, Lily and Donny chat about this and that, mostly parent stuff and the pleasant holiday they're having.

In the back, Tilt can see that Rose has several learning-based reading and puzzle books. She pulls one out and begins working, but is apparently distracted by the presence of the visitor. Rose asks Tilt questions about this and that, some having to do with the puzzles in her book and some on a variety of other topics of interest to a nine-year-old.

In the middle seat, Lance is a whirlwind of sound and activity. At three, his language skills are pretty good for his age, though it's mostly stream-of-consciousness stuff. He points at signs as they go by and reads some of the words off them, sings snatches of songs, bounces and twists in his safety seat, claps his hands, asks Tilt questions about things like what her favorite color is and chatters on about whatever pops into his mind.

[Blackout]

Blackout:

"Powershift, remain outside along with Tesla. Backlash, why don't we take Blackout inside for a tour of the place while the ladies have their talk. There are a few matters still up in the air we need to cover."

"So do you normally have visitors like that around here?" Blackout asks Backlash, indicating the teleporting stripper.

"You got it." turning to Blackout, "You ready to see the accommidations? Unfortunitely there is no mint on any ones pillow, we are still working on that though."
Backlash will take blackout on a tour of the building/facilities, unless an area is off limits that is.

"Sure, seems like I wouldn't be very helpful out here anyway," Blackout says, following Backlash down. It seems to just be an office building with a clinic.

Apparently there is a conversation going on already, so Blackout just waits to see if Backlash will be getting involved or what might be happening next. Being merely a guest at this point, Blackout keeps his questions and comments to himself for the moment.

[Omni]

XANAPHIA

Xana flew up to Tesla's new location and smiled, " Thank you, he was getting a bit upset I think." " Well what would you like to know ?"

[Backlash]

Backlash



"So do you normally have visitors like that around here?" Blackout asks Backlash, indicating the teleporting stripper.

“Nah,she’s a first. So, you can consider yourself lucky.” He says as he makes his way down the stairs.

Not sure what is going on Lash follows the commotion down stairs, “What’s going on Doc?”

[Frostbite]

Frostbite

Looking up in concern, Dr. Williams chases after Frostbite. Both reach the room holding Brother Basilisk. Dr. Salier is stepping out as they arrive.

“I was just coming to see you, Dr. Williams. The patient has been sedated as you directed. I believe he is ready for your probing. If there is nothing else you require I’ll be calling it a day then.”

Dr. Williams looks in the room and Brother Basilisk seems the same as she last saw him. Nothing appears out of the ordinary. “Everything seems to be in order here, Dr. Salier. Have a good holiday.”

Frostbite can’t help but begin to feel a bit frustrated at the good seems so calm. “I saw what I saw Doc. There is no mistaking what I heard and what I saw. If you don’t believe me why don’t you read my mind, After all you are a Telepath are you not? Read my memory ad you will see and hear everything that I saw.”

[Tesla]

Tesla:

Xana flew up to Tesla's new location and smiled, " Thank you, he was getting a bit upset I think." " Well what would you like to know ?"

"Well, there's been a lot going on lately," Tesla says cryptically. "Although if you decide to hang around here, the two of you are going to have to learn to get along sooner or later."

Figuring that will most likely be the later option, Tesla changes the subject, "I guess what the biggest questions right now are, what are you planning to do? Are you just merely escaping, or is there something more you have in mind?"

"Second is the genuine concern that not only Flux, but the rest of us, feel is whether or not anyone will come looking for you, and if so what kind of mood they are likely to be in. We just need to know if we will be needing to stop another threat to our beloved city."

Tesla will see what Xana has to say before deciding if she needs to ask anything else.

[Omni]

XANAPHIA

Xana listened as Tesla Spoke.

I guess what the biggest questions right now are, what are you planning to do? Are you just merely escaping, or is there something more you have in mind?"

"Second is the genuine concern that not only Flux, but the rest of us, feel is whether or not anyone will come looking for you, and if so what kind of mood they are likely to be in. We just need to know if we will be needing to stop another threat to our beloved city."

Xana paused for a moment considering her reply. "I realkly did'nt mean to cause any problems ya know." Xana replied with a touch of sadness in her voice.

[Tilt-A-Whirl]

Tilt-A-Whirl:

Thankfully Tilt is distracted enough that the horribly slow drive doesn't grate on her impatience. She answers the questions and tries to help with the puzzles too. She says she likes bright colors, like oranges, golds and yellows and asks Lance what his favorite is. Once again, she pretty much ignores the adults.

Tilt also tries to put her goggles on Lance's head, but they're far too big! Still she gets a good natured laugh out of it.

Elsewhere Tilt-A-Whirl has been enjoying Menageries family picnic. Later that afternoon, they pile into the family SUV for a ride to watch the evening fire works over the bay.

Fireworks are something Tilt enjoys, pointing out some of the best and moving her eyes everywhere to catch each one.

Xanaphia has arrived on Earth. Frustrated by her talk with Flux, the silver-haired elfin-like woman has flown off to speak privately with Tesla while Powershift watches from a discrete distance.


However inside the clinic things are not as calm.

Frostbite can’t help but begin to feel a bit frustrated at the good seems so calm. “I saw what I saw Doc. There is no mistaking what I heard and what I saw. If you don’t believe me why don’t you read my mind, After all you are a Telepath are you not? Read my memory ad you will see and hear everything that I saw.”

“I believe you believe what you claim,” Dr. Williams states. “However, there is no evidence to support your story. As for reading your mind, as noted before I am a very weak psionic. That’s why we had to sedate Brother Basilisk so that he couldn’t consciously resist my probing. Even then I may not succeed. Thus the possibility of me reading your mind is remote.”

Flux, Backlash, and Blackout join Frostbite and Sea Guard in the clinic as Dr. Williams begins her probe. The doctor asks everyone to leave her alone in the room while she makes the attempt. Finally about ten minutes later she emerges, holding her head.

“That was rough”, Dr. Williams states, “but I think I have the information you need. High in Brother Basilisk’s thoughts was the El Condor hotel. I believe that to be the base of operations for the Elite or its where he has other stoned victims stored. I can’t tell which.”

“We should check this out,” Sea Guard adds.”

The El Condor Hotel was once a grand place in the forties and fifties, but has fallen into disrepair since. It’s in part of the Gaslight District that has yet to be renovated like the Horton Plaza area has. The building stands eight stories high and the upper floor once held luxury suites. Today any knowledgeable traveler avoids the place. The current clientele are not pillar of the community types.

Now what?

[Bruce]

Flux

"We should. We will. Powershift and I will go scout it as soon as Tesla is finished talking to the not-an-elf Princess. Dr Williams, I hate to put you to more trouble, but try to run some further checks on the prisoner. If Dr Salier did do something to him I want to know what. . .and how."

An odd memory flits past Flux's consciousness: himself crouching on Blackout's shoulder while miniaturized, in a combat with strange foes.
It's there and gone again just a quick.

"If we find something of interest we can call the rest in. Blackout, would you like to join us for that recon? Another viewpoint is always welcome.

And the more you are around the more I might remember you. This dual memory track business has got to stop.

[Blackout]

Blackout:

"That should prove quite interesting, sure I'll come along," Blackout replies.

He's poked around a number of areas since arriving in town, but he's always been on his own until now. That fact has kept him cautious about getting in over his head.

Blackout has heard word on the street about El Condor, and if the Elite are moving in, someone will definitely need to make sure they don't receive a warm welcome.

[Tesla]

Tesla:

Xana paused for a moment considering her reply. "Well, I'm not sure what my next step is, I just wanted to get away", "And as for them following me that might take them a bit, seeing as I overloaded the teleporters circuty in sending myself here, they may have a serious rebuild on there hands.....I hope." "Overloaded the circuitry?" Tesla asks. "So you don't have the ability to teleport on your own?"

Since that answer is pretty obvious, Tesla asks a different question, "How is it that the teleporter was targeted to this particular rooftop? Did you set it that way yourself? If not, I wonder just who else might be here..."

[Menagerie]

Menagerie:

After a time, they find a spot to park on a hill overlooking the bay. It looks to be a residential neighborhood, with houses lining both sides of the street. With no obvious places to sit, Lily and Donny climb onto the hood of the SUV with the kids. Lily holds Lance in her lap, and Rose leans up against Donny's knee. There is room for Tilt to sit on the hood or lie on the roof, if she wants it.

They have arrived a little early, but there are drinks and snacks to go around, and plenty of friendly chatting. Still, it's not long before the fireworks start. Everyone ooh's and aah's appreciatively, and the kids chatter excitedly about their favorites.

All too soon, the audio/visual display ends, and they all climb down off the car. Lily turns to Tilt. "Can we give you a ride home, Tilt-A-Whirl?"

No doubt the traffic will be just as bad leaving as it was coming.

[Tilt-A-Whirl]

"um.. no, thats okay" Tilt says, not having any desire to sit still in traffic forever.

"thank you for today," she says and turns to go, waving goodbye to everyone first.

Tilt races off thinking about just how nice they all were and how she had no desire to go home. Mom isn't expecting her anyway, thinking she's over at a friends. What to do now...

[Menagerie]

Menagerie:

"um.. no, thats okay" Tilt says, not having any desire to sit still in traffic forever.

"thank you for today," she says and turns to go, waving goodbye to everyone first.

"Okay. And thank you for joining us. I know the kids really enjoyed your presence.

"And please feel free to call. Anytime. Take care, Tilt-A-Whirl."

Lily watches as the young speedster takes off. The kids both wave, a note of sadness apparent on Rose's face. "Goodbye..." Rose murmurs.

*I wonder if I could keep up with her?* Lily wonders to herself before turning and ushering the kids back into the SUV. Within minutes, they are making their way home through the post-fireworks traffic.

Kudos to both Menagerie and Tilt for carrying out their bit this long, but now we have three characters that have essentially reached the end of their day and everyone else is still bogged down in the middle of that day. Guys, the situation with Xana needs to be resolved. This is not something I can do in a post; this is completely in the players’ hands.

This is what I meant a few weeks back by me getting the feeling that people are waiting for me to post when I’m actually waiting on them. I’ll post an update when I have some that needs to be updated. Right now, there’s not much as we’re all waiting for this situation with Xana to be resolved and other characters haven’t posted since the last update.

I don’t badger people to post in these games as we all have lives and those demands are more important. But by the same token I do appreciate being given noticed if you’re not going to be post for a period of time too. Be it vacation, working a lot or whatever.

If there isn’t interest in continuing this game, then let me know too. None of these games will go on forever, I knew that from day one. Interests change and I’m no different than anyone else. There are other games I would like to try if there is enough interest or it can simply come to an end.

The choice is yours.

Frosty shakes his head in frustration then turns on his heels and exits the room, muttering “Why do I bother, no one believes a word of what I’m saying, Apparently a person’s word means nothing.” Thinking himself, “After all why would I make it up?”

Frosty will return to Gloria’s side until he catches wind of the probe. “Doc take care of her.” I want to make sure no one else suffers as Gloria has.” Looking to Flux, If you don’t mind me coming along. “

Flux mulls over Frostbite's request to join in on a recon carefully. The conflict in memories and trust he's experiencing are hindering his judgment--just how much he can't tell.

"All right young fellow. You have a vested interest in seeing this through. Keep in mind WE are recognized law enforcement personnel with official status. This is a recon-in-force, take direction from us, be mindful of civilians at risk and it should all work out. I suggest you keep iced over in public. It alters your features. We leave soon whether or not Tesla gets answers from our Princess-in-waiting."

I hope I've got this right. I can't sort out what's real memories and what's not. Did I know these people before? And before what, exactly?

Flux can't help but feel that his thoughts and memories were clearer only this morning and thing are getting away from him now.

Looking a bit confused, Xana thought for a moment. " Actually, I have no clue whjat i'm gonna do next," . " And if my people do decide to follow me that could be bad, your world is considered a bit primitive by my people's standards."

Roll Call: Tesla, Powershift, and Xanaphia

The alien Xanaphia has arrived on Earth by way of an advanced form of teleportation. She spoke with Flux initially, but that just proved to be frustrating to her. She then flew off to converse with Tesla. Powershift watches from a discrete distance.


Roll Call: Flux, Backlash, Sea Guard, Blackout, and Frostbite.

Inside Dr. Williams’s clinic, the heroes have learned that the Thugmaster’s Elite has been using the El Condor Hotel as their base of operations while in town thanks to the doctor’s scan of Brother Basilisk’s mind. Flux decides to scout out the hotel and waits for Powershift to return. He is allowing both Blackout and Frostbite to accompany them on the mission.

“Dr Williams, I hate to put you to more trouble, but try to run some further checks on the prisoner. If Dr Salier did do something to him I want to know what… and how."

“I’ll see if I can turn anything up,” the doctor promises.


Sea Guard seems concerned and asks to speak with Flux privately. “Are you sure this is a wise course of action? I mean, they seem to be all right, but you’re putting a lot of trust into strangers. I am concerned.”

While waiting for Powershift’s return, Edgar chimes in with a new report. “Flux, I’m picking up police reports of a disturbance at the El Condor Hotel. Sounds like there is fighting going on! The parties involved have yet to be identified.”


Roll Call: Tilt-A-Whirl

After saying her goodbyes to Menageries family, Tilt runs off on her own once more, unsure what to do. She runs for a time, simply enjoying her speed. Night has fallen and the streets are not as crowded as they once were. A streak of flame in the sky attracts Tilt’s attention and she runs to see what it is.

Coming closer, the young speedster can see that it is an attractive woman in a red one-piece swimsuit-like outfit with flame accents in orange and yellow. She also wore matching knee height boots, elbow length gloves, and a facial mask. Upon spotting Tilt the woman slows and waves to her while still hovering overhead.

“Hello there! Are you from around here? Do you know much about what goes on in San Diego? This is my first time in town and I don’t know my way around. Oh, forgive my manners. I’m Phoenix.”


Roll Call: Menagerie

It is late in the evening as the Donny drives the SUV back to the apartment. The kids, weary from the long day of excitement, have already fallen asleep. The route home has taken them past the Horton’s Plaza area. Odd memories flood Lily’s mind as she experience flashbacks or is it premonitions? Things that she recalls happening there, but then again didn’t happen.

As the SUV drives along, Lily notes a group of people walking strangely near the plaza. They all seem be shambling in a very odd kind of gait. It’s very strange. As the vehicle draws closer, Lily can swear she hears them chanting something.

“Morjok… Morjok… Morjok…”


Roll Call: Eldrich

Elsewhere in San Diego, Eldrich is awakened from his deep meditations over the magic items. The Magus is there.

“The time has come, my friend, for us to move. It is still night outside, but the darkness will cover our movements. We must transfer our friends and their possessions into a land vehicle. Then we’ll begin our journey into the city and to where the magical convergence will occur. We plan to be there when it happens.”


Now what?

[Bruce]

Flux

Sea Guard seems concerned and asks to speak with Flux privately. “Are you sure this is a wise course of action? I mean, they seem to be all right, but you’re putting a lot of trust into strangers. I am concerned.”

"Step over with me a moment 'Guard. Excuse us a moment will you please?"

Flux walks a bit off from the others, to make a polite space for talking.

"I understand your concerns Seaguard. I share them. Today has not been a standard day in spite of what it looked like. My memories of today's events-and tomorrow's-are fading and changing by the hour. I expect it's the same for Tesla and Menagerie. A few things I still recall. One of those things is working with Blackout and the Frostbite before-even though we have never met before today. I can't be sure but I'm trying to keep it straight what comes next. Something involving your warning earlier. The Thugmasters weren't HERE before, they don't FIT into this."

Flux pauses to take a breath and look at Seguard's reactions.

" I know, I know, sounds crazy but the doc gave me a clean bill of health so all I have left are my instincts and judgment to go by. I trust those two-to a point- because of these memories. But that's not the only reason I'm including them along on this.The Runaway Princess is new to me too. She has the look of trouble around her. If these guys work out we can invite them to join us on a permanent basis. If they don't work out then we'll know now. If they turn us down at least we will have some working familiarity with them. Whichever way it goes, we'll have allies for whatever fallout the Princess brings with her to San Diego."

While waiting for Powershift’s return, Edgar chimes in with a new report. “Flux, I’m picking up police reports of a disturbance at the El Condor Hotel. Sounds like there is fighting going on! The parties involved have yet to be identified.”

"Ok out of time! We move now! Notify Tesla and Powershift, Edgar. Those on board head to the roof. I'll meet you there and give a lift to those needing it."

Flux ghosts his way back to the roof once more, planning to enlarge to full size and carry any that need it to the El Condor Hotel.

"I hope the Princess is over her waterworks display. I hope Tesla got something useful out of her. I hope nothing bad comes of this visit. Might as well hope for a winning lottery ticket while I'm at it. . .

[Bruce]

Eldrich Arcane

Elsewhere in San Diego, Eldrich is awakened from his deep meditations over the magic items. The Magus is there.

"I am prepared friend Magus. Some knowledge has returned to me, sufficient I hope, to be of aid to you. I have but two questions for you; Are these the weapons which are used in your realm. The armor and such? And did you by chance happen upon my items of magic power where you found me? They would be a sky-green Cloak of Floating and an Amulet of Warding. Not much I know, but useful just the same."

Eldrich rises from his sitting position, somewhat stiff.

[Tesla]

Tesla:

Looking a bit confused, Xana thought for a moment. " Actually, I have no clue whjat i'm gonna do next," . " And if my people do decide to follow me that could be bad, your world is considered a bit primitive by my people's standards."

"Well then maybe a good place to start would be to tell us about you and your people, especially considering they are more advanced than us," Tesla suggests. "Anything we could learn from you would be important should they fix things back there and come through."

Glancing over and seeing Powershift still waiting, and probably growing bored, Tesla asks Xana, "How 'bout we go inside? It's just an office building, nothing fancy, but it will give you a chance to sit down and figure things out."

Depending on when Edgar alerts her, she might not have a chance to bring Xana inside if she's receptive. Guess we'll just have to see...

[Menagerie]

Menagerie:

They don't get far before the kids succumb to exhaustion. Lily looks back at them and smiles. "I love how peaceful they look when they're asleep," she says to Donny.

On their way home, they pass by the vicinity of Horton Plaza. It's late, but there are still people out. Of course, it's a holiday, but even so, there are more than she would expect. Watching closely, Lily realizes a few moments later what it is that is bothering her about them; they seem to be moving with a stiff, awkward-looking stride.

Rolling down the window to get a better look, Lily finally hears it - a low murmur that resembles a chant. As they move slowly by, Lily thinks she can make out a word: Morjok. Searching her memory, the word - or name, if that's what it is - doesn't ring any bells for her.

"Donny, can you let me out and take the girls home to bed? I think it's time for me to do a little work for my other job..."

"Are you sure you're going to be okay, sweetheart?" Donny asks as he obligingly pulls over and stops.

"Don't worry, if there's any real danger, I'll call my friends in." Lily climbs into the back for a quick change into her costume, then exits the SUV. Time for a quick look around, once she's certain Donny is back on the road and heading home safe.

[Tilt-A-Whirl]

Tilt-A-Whirl:

After saying her goodbyes to Menageries family, Tilt runs off on her own once more, unsure what to do. She runs for a time, simply enjoying her speed. Night has fallen and the streets are not as crowded as they once were. A streak of flame in the sky attracts Tilt’s attention and she runs to see what it is.

Tilt enjoys not having any grown ups around and runs for a bit. She tries to be more considerate of others by not rushing quite so close past them. Lily's influence..? nah! she did it because she wanted to, or at least she tells herself that.

Then Tilt sees something in the sky. More fireworks? Curious she runs over, only to see it is a woman.

Coming closer, the young speedster can see that it is an attractive woman in a red one-piece swimsuit-like outfit with flame accents in orange and yellow. She also wore matching knee height boots, elbow length gloves, and a facial mask. Upon spotting Tilt the woman slows and waves to her while still hovering overhead.

“Hello there! Are you from around here? Do you know much about what goes on in San Diego? This is my first time in town and I don’t know my way around. Oh, forgive my manners. I’m Phoenix.”

Tilt waves back and smiles at the attractive woman, noting her costume. Soon she asks her some questions.

"umiknowalittlebit," Tilt says, then realizes she's talking fast again. "this isn't my home but what are you looking for? oh and i'm Tilt-A-Whirl!"

[Blackout]

Blackout:

While waiting for Powershift’s return, Edgar chimes in with a new report. “Flux, I’m picking up police reports of a disturbance at the El Condor Hotel. Sounds like there is fighting going on! The parties involved have yet to be identified.”

"Ok out of time! We move now! Notify Tesla and Powershift, Edgar. Those on board head to the roof. I'll meet you there and give a lift to those needing it."

"With any luck, they're fighting amongst themselves and there will only be unconscious bodies to pick up," Blackout muses, "but then again, when does anything ever go that easily?"

Blackout makes his way to the roof to await Flux's arrival. Even though he gets around fine on his swing line, lately he feels as though he's the slowest of all of these other heroes.

[Tesla]

"Sounds like a plan," Tesla says and starts to make her way inside, motioning to Powershift to come along. She'll make sure to keep good mental notes, because Flux and the others will need to decide what, if anything, to do with the information.

"Ok out of time! We move now! Notify Tesla and Powershift, Edgar. Those on board head to the roof. I'll meet you there and give a lift to those needing it."

“I can get there on my own.” He says evenly as he gets to the roof and sees Flux. Frosty will Ice slide to the Hotel.

“Thanks Ole man!” he says jokingly as he heads up to the roof, though instead of waiting he leaps off the building toward the disturbance.
