Previously:

"No intrusion at all," Lyonessa replies, smiling at the handsome half-elf. "I am Lyonessa, a songstress of Mystra."
“A pleasure to meet you, Lady Lyonessa of Mystra. Ah, you are among those who recently arrived with Baron Validar! It is a honor to meet you. Just this morning I was accepted as a Squire to Sir Corley, so it appears that we’ll be traveling together for a time.”

Squire Verlin will ask Lyonessa if she wishes to dance once the gala ball begins and then later to join him at the dinner table.

Timberline:

The first day of travel from Pyris towards Elcadan is uneventful, as you have not yet entered into Elcadan territories. The village of Woodcrest is visited for lunch and you reach Timberline by evening. The local Lord has a private dinner with the rulers and knights. The lord’s castle is small and there simply isn’t enough room to host a large event here.

Conversation is light, but the Lord Miral will bring you up to date with Wrasseldown.

“Wrasseldown is a small community of farmers,” the lord states. “I would guess that it is on par with Woodcrest as far as size goes. There is no organized military there, as they face very few dangers apart from wild animals. When there is a need, a militia is formed to handle the task at hand. The main city itself is small with perhaps half its population living in town. The rest are scattered about the numerous farms that dot the landscape. Corn, peas, and beans are the largest crops.”

“We’ve never had any trouble from Wrasseldown. I cannot even be sure they have a lord or not, perhaps a village elder. They seem wholly uninterested in court intrigues and seemingly concentrate solely on their farms. They are a simple, hard working people.”

Lyonessa releases Dusk to scout and hunt during the night. The owl does find some tasty field mice, but nothing of a suspicious nature.

The night passes without incident.

Wrasseldown:

Morning comes, breakfast is had, and you’re on the road once more. An honor guard escorts the procession out of Timberline and you’re on your own once more. The High Road winds its way through the heavy forest that surrounds Timberline. About twelve miles past Timberline, the forest begins to thin out and eventually gives way to the great Streel Plain.

Much of the lands north of Elcadan are wide-open plains that are ideal for growing food. Hundreds of farms cover the landscape with fields supporting a wide variety of crops. The crops grown here not only feed the towns and villages in this area, but many of the other cities in the entire kingdom. Chances are that most of your meals came from crops grown in this region.

About five miles into the Streel Plain, a side road comes in to view. The High Road continues to the southwest where it comes to High Guard, the next town. Beyond that lays Elcadan itself. The secondary road leads to Wrasseldown and then to Ansimont on the shores of the Streel River. The procession turns on to this secondary road.

Almost immediately you hit the first of the outlaying farms of Wrasseldown. The fields are bare right now, as it is winter. No workers are spotted, but the main farmhouses are far off the road. The group continues onward without seeing anyone.

It is late afternoon when you reach the Village of Wrasseldown. Oddly enough, you still haven’t seen anyone. Even more peculiar there are no lights on and ominously there are is no smoke from any chimneys’ in town. It’s not warm enough to not have a fire going. The front of the precession is on the edge of town and even the horses seem nervous.

Now what?

Procession...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

Validar rides near the Duke as the procession begins, the soldiers lining their path with swords drawn. While some of the acclaim may be for him, it is his father who has the honor this day, and Validar gives the Duke a small berth to accept the glory of his people.

Once into the city, the crowds are teeming and everyone is happy and joyous. The crowd chants out the Duke's name as well as his own at times and alidar is quite proud of the send-off that the citizens of Pyris have warmly provided.

Even outside the city gates, the people have gathered and the road is dotted with families waving, smiling and cheering the procession on. Here the group begins to pick up some speed and soon they are on the way to Woodcrest. In Woodcrest, Validar and Duke Relon meet with the local lord, Lord Garvik. Garvik is a landed lord who also acts as mayor of the town. Validar had never met his family before and during the brief meeting, meets Lady Ardona and their two children.

The rest of the group has lunch together and the horses get a bit of a rest. Soon they are on the road again. Validar moves about in the procession, riding in various positions and chatting with his friends, as well as discussing their progress with the lead cavalry squadron commander and reviewing the troops. Pyris' light cavalry squadrons are well-known for their drill and prowess in battle. The wooded terrain that dominates a large part of Pyris helps the training of the troops especially in their spread formations.

Eventually the group makes its way to Timberline. Even before the town can be seen, a group of soldiers on horseback is waiting alongside the road. The sergeant rides up and greets the Duke and announces that they are an honor guard toescort them into the town. Lord Miral and Lady Durova are waiting for them.

Eventually, they reach Lord Miral's small castle. The rulers and knights are invited to a dinner, but there simply is not enough room for everyone to attend. The soldiers make camp for the night in the castle courtyard, which will be quite crowded like much of the castle will be on this occassion.

Validar will address the rest of the Guardians. "I apologize that many of you are left to your own devices this evening. I can assure you however, that the conversations will be mostly political and economical in nature. For many of you, you are not going to want to be there anyway." Validar remembers how uncomfortable many of the group was simply at his own party much less at something such as this.

Validar attends the dinner with Lady Gabriella. The squires, as well as Dellant and Po, are given free reign to indulge themselves this evening and explore the town, should they so desire. Conversation tends to be light, sprinkled with occassional political and economic exchanges. Eventually, they get to the topic of the next town and the first one they are to encounter in Elcadan territory.

"It was my understanding that Wrassledown was originally developed in order to compate directly with Timberline as a way station for caravans," Validar says. "Granted it is not on the direct route with Elcadan city, but it is from Ansimont. Apparently, our efforts have been more successful than theirs."

"But I find it odd that they may not even have a lord. The entire situation in Elcadan is one that has been completely perverted and damaged. Surely the job of the new Duke will be an unending one."

Later, Validar will ask to review the additional defense modifications that have been started. When the thought was that war with Elcadan could be coming, Validar contributed a sizeable portion of his own treasury gained while adventuring in the Eastern Frontier to additional fortifications here in Timberline and the surrounding area. Validar will be given his tour in the early morning.

Timberline...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

Validar is awake early and ready to tour the defenses of Timberline, including their new construction. He spares his beloved the likely tedium of such a task although he finds the excursion quite interesting himself.

One of the cavalry captains stationed here and a small squad of riders join him on the dawn inspection. The inspection is quick but satisfactory. The wooden walls to the west have been reinforced and towers added, as well as two new stone towers and a iron gate at the entrance to Pyris territory. The towers are defended by ballista and a barracks and stable have been erected nearby as well for troops stationed here. More guard towers throughout the forest are planned as are a series of towers and wall along the eastern road.

Validar and the soldiers return in time to catch a little breakfast before the procession is ready to head out again. Validar will check up on his friends and attendants to be sure that everyone had suitable arrangements for the evening, but is confident that a group such as this is quite fine on its own.

Once the process is completed for readying this column again, they are once more on their way, ready to exit Pyris completely and enter into the realm of Elcadan.

On to Wrassledown...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

With the soldiers, carriages and wagons readied to travel again, Validar inspects the column and soon they are on about to depart once more. Lord Miral is there at the send-off and has provided an honor guard of cavalry to escort the procession out of Timberline. With banners flying, the procession continues out of the city.

Validar will lead the procession at first and also remind the Guardians that we will be entering territory that could be considered hostile. He asks them to work together, spread out around the center of the column.

As the forest thins, they then pass the new fortifications on the road which signal the end of Pyrisian territory. Eventually they cklear the great forest entirely and are onto the Streel plain. Taking the secondary road to Wrassledown and on to Ansimont, the procession leaves the High Road. The advance guard continue their search ahead of the column, but now they can be seen from the front of the procession.

Despite the fact that it is winter and the fields are bare, there is no activity whatsoever as they reach the outlying farms. Validar sends a couple of soldiers riding off towards a few of the farmhouses, but they report that no activity is seen. Not wanting to cause any concern with 'foreign troops' riding into town, Validar does not have the soldiers investigate further. There are numerous reasons why the people may not be here, from severe weather to some local event in town.

Validar will inform the Duke of his concerns however and also has Sir Corley pass the information among the rest of the Guardians.

Some time passes and Validar has the advance guard on high alert now. He continues to ride at the front of the column, as it is unlikely that the farmland around them would allow for a suitable ambush from the flanks. Any attacks now would be coming from the front or rear or else be well seen in advance.

Eventually a rider comes back from the advance guard with word. "Baron, the city appears deserted," the cavalryman explains. "There are no lights and no smoke from the chimneys."

"Odd," Validar intones. "The day is too cold to not have a fire going. Have the advance guard approach the town, but not enter until the head of the column reaches their location." With that, the rider heads back ahead to report to his commander. "Have them circle the town and see if there has been any indication of battle recently in the surrounding area."

Validar will discuss the situation with the Duke and any others present briefly. He calls the procession to halt. "I am concerned. The advance riders seem to indicate that the town appears empty. The winter was not harsh enough to drive everyone away. And it would seem to be a major undertaking to require every citizen to return to the capital for some unknown reason," Validar states. "And yet it seems unlikely that some foul means would come to damage this town and Pyris not hear about it."

"The way I see it, there are several possibilities. The people were attacked and driven out and somehow none of them headed to Pyris territory. They were all summoned back to Elcadan for some political purpose. Or the town was intentionally evacuated, because a Pyrisian military column was marching in this direction. In any case we shall have to investigate further."

Validar once more has Sir Corley round up the Guardians and he explains the situation, at least what little they know about it. "We are going to have the column continue up until we are close to the town. From there we will have the troops arrayed in battlelines, just in case their is some nefarious reason for the lack of people here."

"I would like to have all of our aerial options do the intial reconnaissance of the area. That would include Argent, Sir Acerion and even Dusk, as well as anyone else who might have such abilities. We need to find out whether the lack of people here was due to them simply leaving, being spirited away or some other nefarious possibility." Validar is hoping that the people have not been slaughtered out of hand, but there is no indication of that as yet. "We have to consider the possibility that magick is at work here. Some Detect Magicks or other such spells would prove helpful as we approach. I would think it wise if the Duke stays in the center of the column for now and does nto draw any unnecessary attention to himself at this point," Validar will add.

The aerial group wings away as the rest of the procession moves forward. Eventually the head of the column is a short distance from the town and sure enough there are no lights, nor any smoke from the chimneys. No one is seen.

"The horses seem restless," Dellant states, as he struggles to control his mount.

"Indeed. Something is amiss," Validar responds. There is more to the situation than a simple evacuation of the city. "We need to be prepared for anything from soldiers to mages to monsters to demonic forces."

The advance guard commander rides up and salutes. "What is the situation as you know it, commander?", Validar asks, his gaze not leaving the town. One hand is on his sword grip, as he awaits something about to happen. Everyone is on full alert.

riding into...?

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:
As their time in Pyris wends to a close, Yusef finds another opportunity to practice with his new sling. Otherwise, he spends as much of his time with Sherra as she will permit.
Sherra will definitely be receptive to Yusef's company. She doesn't have too much she needs to do before they depart, so there is little to distract her attention.
Not being nobles, there doesn't appear to be any particular place in the procession set aside for them. As a result, Yusef suggests to Sherra that they ride near Lady Sallavarian's carriage. There is a huge crowd in the streets as they depart, bidding the rulers and their entourage goodbye.
The idea sounds good enough to her, and she rides next to Yusef the entire journey. Ocassionally Lyonessa's voice drifts to them and she enjoys the songs, being much different from the sailor's tunes she is so accustomed to hearing. Lyonessa always seems to have a never-ending supply of tales and songs.

Sherra is glad when there isn't room to be invited to the dinner. She's had her fill of formal functions for a while. It allows her to relax under the stars and engage in casual conversation with Yusef and the others. She is definitely glad to be on the road again.

The situation turns a little different as we approach Wrasseldown. It would seem no one at all is about and Validar is concerned that magic is at work, or maybe something even more sinister. He sends a number of different aerial scouts out, but Sherra wonders if that will be sufficient.

Approaching Validar, Sherra says, "Do you want me to go in too? I can move around a lot quieter and a lot faster than even your lightest armored soldiers. Plus I have a fair chance of detecting magic on my own. There will be things that those in the air just won't be able to see, and why risk any of the troops?"

Sherra will wait to see what he says. If he gives her the go ahead, she will use her Armor of Blending and begin scouting. She will use her thief ability to detect magic on anything that seems odd or out of place.

Inspections...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

As the initial inspection of the apparently deserted town of Wrassledown begins, an aerial contingent heads over the town and surrounding area.

A moment later, Sherra rides forward.

"A fine idea," Validar says immediately. "You are correct in your assessment. And while the mounted troops may indeed cover more ground, they will also be much more conspicuous. As ever you have a skill set that no one else in this group can match. Very well, but be careful."

Sherra dismounts and using her magickal armor, quickly disappears into the town.

“It is a minor detail, my friend. Honestly I prefer being left to my own devices than the pampering of castles and keeps. The rambling of political nature does tend to give me a headache.”

As the day goes on the horses become skittish and nervous. Trying to steer his mount forward as his father had taught him, he leaned forward and stroked the horse’s flank, whispering soft words into its ear in the hopes of calming it.

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:

The evening at Timberline passes quickly enough, though the political talk begins to bore Sir Corley after a time. Later he returns to Lady Sallavarian’s magical dwelling and retires for the evening. During the next day's ride, Sir Corley moves about the procession, chatting to those he knows as he rides along. Eventually they near Wrasseldown.
Validar once more has Sir Corley round up the Guardians and he explains the situation, at least what little they know about it. "We are going to have the column continue up until we are close to the town. From there we will have the troops arrayed in battle lines, just in case their is some nefarious reason for the lack of people here."

"I would like to have all of our aerial options do the initial reconnaissance of the area. That would include Argent, Sir Acerion and even Dusk, as well as anyone else who might have such abilities. We need to find out whether the lack of people here was due to them simply leaving, being spirited away or some other nefarious possibility." Some Detect Magicks or other such spells would prove helpful as we approach. I would think it wise if the Duke stays in the center of the column for now and does not draw any unnecessary attention to himself at this point," Validar will add.
Sensing that danger might be afoot, Sir Corley will change over to his warhorse and take his lance in hand. Then he rides up to Baron Validar and the others.

“Baron, it may be wise to have the Lady Sallavarian conjure her magical dwelling at this time for the safety of the non-combatants riding with us. As I understand it, Lady Sallavarian controls who goes into and out of the mansion. It thus makes an ideal safe house for them should things get ugly out here and we would not have to worry about guarding them.”

Sir Corley will then be ready to advance on his warhorse at the first sign of trouble.

Argent

Post by Argent »

Argent:
As the night comes to an end, Chareos escorts Argent to her chambers. "Thank you for a pleasant evening," he says with a smile then heads off to bed.
“But it's not over just yet,” Argent answers mischievously. “Do you know what the best part of fancy dressing is? It’s the release from finally getting out of those constricting clothes! I could use some assistance in that regard.”
Putting on his travel gear, Chareos straps his Frostbrand to his hip and quarterstaff across his back and heads to the horses. Getting there a few moments before Argent, he places a locket of silver engraved with a rose about the pommel, and leads the horse to her. He holds the reins for her as she mounts up. "I trust you slept well," he says with a smile, waiting to see her face when she sees the locket.
Argent exits the inn to find that Chareos already has their horses ready. “It’s a good thing we have Stoneskins active. Riding horses this much makes my bottom hurt!”

“After last night, I slept very well,” Argent answers with a knowing grin. While Chareos steadies her horse, Argent mounts her steed. She almost immediately notes the locket and picks it up, examining it.

“Is this for me? It’s very beautiful. Thank you!” Argent places the locket around her neck and leans down to give Chareos a lingering kiss.
Chareos notes the tone in which it is spoken as if she was left out wanting to be in the spotlight. "Who wishes to be in such grandeur all the time," he says evenly. "The simple things are important if not more than status and wealth can give."
“It’ll probably be pretty boring stuff anyway,” Argent adds. “Affairs of state and what-not. Not my type of conversation anyway.”

The evening is pleasant enough and the next day we’re on the move again. But all is quiet as we reach Wrasseldown. Too quiet.
"I would like to have all of our aerial options do the initial reconnaissance of the area. That would include Argent, Sir Acerion and even Dusk, as well as anyone else who might have such abilities. “I’m on it,” Argent answers. Stepping down from her horse, Argent casts Fly and then Invisibility on herself. She’ll rise up and fly into town. She’ll methodically make her way from building to building, peeking in any open windows she can find in search of life in this seemingly lifeless town.

Ivy:

The ride from Pyris is pleasant enough. Lyonessa’s ballads help lighten the mood and it's good to be away from the life of a nobleman. Although riding in a procession this large is almost the same thing.

“I can go forth and sense if there are any undead in the area,” Ivy adds, slipping down from her horse and taking her mace in hand. If allowed, Ivy will pass from building to building pausing to sense if she can feel any undead inside. If any are sensed, Ivy will stop and wave vigorously to the others.

Serena:

Serena enjoys the ride from Pyris. The landscape is very beautiful and hasn’t been fully exploited like forests she’s seen back in Alphatia. There is a midday stop at a small village and then we’re off once more. A small town is reached next and we spend the night here. Jallarzi creates Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion for the evening. Serena is comfortable in such magical dwellings.

It’s more riding the next day and late in the afternoon we reach a seemingly deserted village. There are no light or even signs of fires to keep warm by. Very strange. Sir Corley rounds us up for a strategy session.

Preparing for trouble...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

Conversations in Timberline:

Validar apologizes to the Guardians that most will be unable to partake of the evening dinner. Fortunately, everyone seems more relieved than disappointed.

“It is a minor detail, my friend. Honestly I prefer being left to my own devices than the pampering of castles and keeps. The rambling of political nature does tend to give me a headache.”

“It’ll probably be pretty boring stuff anyway,” Argent adds. “Affairs of state and what-not. Not my type of conversation anyway.”

Outside Wrassledown:
The beginnings of preparations are made to explore the seemingly deserted town of Wrassledown. Validar has assembled the Guardians and sent several flyers over the twon to investigate, as well as Sherra in camoflauge.

“I’m on it,” Argent answers. Stepping down from her horse, Argent casts Fly and then Invisibility on herself. She’ll rise up and fly into town. She’ll methodically make her way from building to building, peeking in any open windows she can find in search of life in this seemingly lifeless town.

Very good, Validar thinks. No one is likely to notice an owl flying about and Argent is relatively undetectable. Sir Acerion is more noticeable on his pegasus, but he is best prepared to defend himself.

Several more of the Guardians begin offering strategy suggestions after Sherra speaks up.

Chareos holds steady his horse the best he can. “Would it not be wise to send a few riders to the flanks of the town rather then all enter at one point?” he asks curiously as some sight may go unseen. Chareos will hold back until the other Guardians move forward.

Validar continues to stare at the town, waiting for some answer to this peculiar situation. "I have no intention of everyone entering at one point. Pronged attacks are my forte, my friend. For now, I have no desire to do anything without more information or an imminent attack."

Lord Corley rides up, now upon his warhorse with lance in hand. Validar will motion to Squire Flynn to bring up Havok and his lance as well.

"Indeed, Sir Corley," Validar says as he mounts Havok and takes a lance from Flynn. "A wise precaution. It is late enough that we can camp here for the rest of the day anyway. I do not wish to put anyone at unnecessary risk."

Validar will turn to his other squire. "Sara, ride back to the carriage where Lady Sallavarian rides. Let her know that we need her to summon her Magickal Mansion again, some distance from the town and to have all the non-combatants ushered inside as soon as possible. I want you to assist in their moving and return only when everyone is secure and safe." Sara Ebonov salutes quickly and rides off towards the carriages.

Validar will then approach the Duke. "I am afraid that this includes you, Your Grace. We cannot afford for anything dire to happen to you on this trip. If anyone will be targetted, it will be the new Duke of the Streel Duchy."

Validar signals to Po, Dellant and Flynn. "Escort the Duke to the carriage and then to Lady Sallavarian's secure mansion. Chareos, you go along with them. Come back as soon as the Duke is inside."

"That may prove helpful as well, Ivy of Azrella. For the moment, let us wait until the initial scouts have determined there is nothing imminently amiss. I would not want you to be ambushed by something you do not detect. Be ready and we will commence with that, although I do not wish you to go alone."

“I have the innate ability to sense evil magic,” Serena speaks up. “I will go forth and see if I can find any.”

"Hold for the moment," Validar cautions. "If there is no obvious danger reported by the scouts, then the two of you can proceed together. Sir Corley will accompany you, a short distance behind, for additional defense."

"Lyonessa and Yusef, stay close in case there is an attack and we need to respond." Validar continues to wait for the next news or an attack.

Chareos wrote:“No harm done, my friend. It is new to me as well.” He says with a smirk.
"Ah, it is good to know that I am not alone in feeling this way."
Chareos wrote:“Aye it is, though only minorly. There is no need for repayment, Yusef. I will have it for you come morning; I trust it will serve you well.”
"I have no doubt that it will, Chareos. And again, thank you," Yusef concludes with a bow.

Validar wrote:Validar will address the rest of the Guardians. "I apologize that many of you are left to your own devices this evening. I can assure you however, that the conversations will be mostly political and economical in nature. For many of you, you are not going to want to be there anyway." Validar remembers how uncomfortable many of the group was simply at his own party much less at something such as this.
Yusef pauses for a moment, then looks at Sherra. "See, this is why I never want to be a ruler; it limits your freedom far too much. I suspect I might well die of boredom if I had to attend all those meetings and formal dinners..."
Sherra wrote:The idea sounds good enough to her, and she rides next to Yusef the entire journey.

Yusef enjoys the company of the beautiful woman who is quickly becoming so much a part of his life, both as they ride and during the evening under the stars. He chats with her about place he has been, including all of the details of their visit to Silvarn's home, and all of the places he yet wants to visit. To him, travelling and seeing the world is the only way he wants to spend the rest of his life - hopefully in the company of someone special that he can share it all with.

The next morning, another day of travel is begun. Yusef performs his rituals and exercises after rising early. He packs his few things and eats a light meal; it is never good to weigh the body down while travelling.

That afternoon, they pass the boundary between the duchies, which conceivably could be considered to be entering enemy lands in a sense. Yusef begins to pay greater attention to their surrounding.

Eventually, they reach the outskirts of Wrasseldown and the caravan grinds to a halt.
Validar wrote:Validar once more has Sir Corley round up the Guardians and he explains the situation, at least what little they know about it.

Validar calls for the Guardians to meet with him, and Yusef joins the assemblage. Hearing that Validar wants all those with flight capabilities to scout the town, he looks at Sherra and says, "Duty calls, it would seem." He then steps aside with the fliers. Once all are prepared and begin to take off, Yusef activates his cloak, causing large bat-like wings to sprout from his shoulders. Beating the wings strongly, he begins to lift into the air.
Validar wrote:"Lyonessa and Yusef, stay close in case there is an attack and we need to respond." Validar continues to wait for the next news or an attack.
Pausing in mid-air, Yusef looks down at the newly-minted baron. "Uhm... Okay," he says and flutters back down to the ground. The decision seems odd to Yusef, but perhaps Validar has some reason for pulling him from the aerial scouting group.

Considering that duration is probably more a consideration than speed, I figure Yusef activated the Wings for 6 turns at speed 15.

Baron Validar -

Validar sends the flyers on and either he has forgotten that Yusef has flight abilities, or else he never knew it. Either way, he is surprised when he calls to Yusef, that he is actually returning to them, rather than waiting here.

Pausing in mid-air, Yusef looks down at the newly-minted baron. "Uhm... Okay," he says and flutters back down to the ground. The decision seems odd to Yusef, but perhaps Validar has some reason for pulling him from the aerial scouting group.

Seeing Yusef's confusion, created by his own, Validar will put up his hand to signal to hold Yusef from returning. "Never mind!" he calls out. "If you can fly, then I want you out there!" he shouts pointing out over the town.

Sometimes it is a challenge keeping everything together and what everyone can do.

Lyonessa:

“A pleasure to meet you, Lady Lyonessa of Mystra. Ah, you are among those who recently arrived with Baron Validar! It is a honor to meet you. Just this morning I was accepted as a Squire to Sir Corley, so it appears that we’ll be traveling together for a time.”

Squire Verlin will ask Lyonessa if she wishes to dance once the gala ball begins and then later to join him at the dinner table.

"That is good news," Lyonessa says as Verlin extends his offer to join him on the dance floor. "Sir Corley is a fine man and I am sure you will learn much from him."

She will enjoy the dance and will accompany him for dinner, although she eats lightly. She will spend some time speaking further with him before excusing herself for the night.

Lyonessa releases Dusk to scout and hunt during the night. The owl does find some tasty field mice, but nothing of a suspicious nature.

"Well at least you are well fed," she tells Dusk when he returns, "and we can all sleep soundly tonight."

It appears something is amiss in Wrasseldown as there is no sign of life either indoors or out. A few scouts are sent out, and Validar calls her up.

"Lyonessa and Yusef, stay close in case there is an attack and we need to respond." Validar continues to wait for the next news or an attack.

"Certainly," Lyonessa says and keeps her mace close. She tries to make sure she is ready for anything - healing, defense or information. She keeps several spells close in her mind while she waits.

"Oh. Okay!" Yusef can see the confusion on Validar's face, and suspects that the man needs to get more sleep. Then again, he's only activated the cloak once since meeting Sherwood's friends, and Validar wasn't around at the time.

As Yusef flies away, he notes that Sherra is nowhere in sight. She must be scouting in her own innimitable way. She's very sneaky when she wants to be, but Yusef will be certain to keep an eye out for her as he's scouting the town from the air.

Chareos
Validar signals to Po, Dellant and Flynn. "Escort the Duke to the carriages and then to Lady Sallavarian's secure mansion. Chareos, you go along with them. Come back as soon as the Duke is inside."
“It will be done as you say,” he says evenly as he steers his mount to the rear. With a hard kick in the sides, the horse thunders into a gallop as the group comes upon the Duchess’ carriage.

“Come your Grace, all will be well.” He says as he takes it upon himself to escort Validar’s kin to the relative safety of the Magical Manison.

Afterward Chareos will return to Validar and the others who are waiting by his side and await what may come.

"That is good news," Lyonessa says as Verlin extends his offer to join him on the dance floor. "Sir Corley is a fine man and I am sure you will learn much from him."
“That is my hope, milady,” Verlin adds.
She will enjoy the dance and will accompany him for dinner, although she eats lightly. She will spend some time speaking further with him before excusing herself for the night.
As the two talk, Verlin reveals more about himself. His father is an elf, Malin Moonshadow and his mother, Marie, an officer in the Pyris Military. Both were stationed near the dangerous Dragon Tree region near the Pyris/Elfholds border when they fell in love and married. Verlin was raised with both his parents and wishes to follow his mother’s military carrier.

The evening comes to an end. Taking Lyonessa’s hand, Verlin will say his good night. “I wish to thank you for a most pleasant evening, milady. Sleep well.”

Wrasseldown:

The procession makes its way across the Streel Plain towards the small village of Wrasseldown. Oddly enough, there have been no signs of any people along the way. Wrasseldown itself seems strangely deserted and no lights or fires burn in town. An advance guard is sent to circle the town, while the Guardians prepare for trouble.

Sir Corley suggests that Lady Salavarian creates her magical dwelling as a refuge for the non-combatants in case a battle does erupt. Baron Validar agrees and the Squire Ebonov is dispatched to handle the request. As the other Guardians ride up to Validar and Corley, the carriage bearing Duchess Lysandra, Lady Salavarian and Lady Allonica moves further away from town. Once a safe distance away, Jallarzi begins to cast her spell. It takes almost ten minutes for the magic to be invoked, but once the spell is complete many begin to enter into the magical dwelling. Duke Relon has his daughter, the Lady Rachel, accompany him. The young noblewoman complains, but complies with her father’s wishes.

Back at the front of the procession, the advanced riders return.

“We’ve circled the entire town, milord,” the commander reports. “No sign of any people, but no signs of battle or a mass evacuation either. It is very strange.”

Next several of the Guardians are sent into town to investigate closer. Sir Acerion flies overhead on his Pegasus for an aerial view along with Dusk. Argent uses magic to gain Flight and make herself invisible. After a pause Yusef flies in, supported by this Wings of Flying. Sherra uses her armor to blend into the background and silently moves into town.

Sherra looks into the first few buildings that she comes across and finds them to be deserted. It does not appear that a struggle took place here or that even an evacuation was called. It’s like the people here just set down whatever it was they were doing and left.

Unseen, Argent peeks in the windows of buildings as she flies overhead. Those she can see into reveal just empty rooms and no people, not even any animals.

Stepping into a general store, Sherra becomes aware of movement and noise. She silently moves closer to see what is causing the disturbance. The source comes quickly into view. It is a small boy, perhaps 3 or 4 years old, wearing tattered clothing and hungrily stuffing food into his face. He is completely unaware of Sherra’s presence.

The overhead view for Sir Acerion and Yusef isn’t much different. The town is seemingly deserted and shows no signs of life. Then a soft and subtle melody reaches their ears. It grows louder and more seductive with each passing moment. Searching for the source, both men find it after a few moments. Near the middle of town are a series of barns and warehouses where crops are stored, sorted, and prepared for shipping.

Standing on top of the highest barn is a very strange creature. She has the naked torso of a human female, but is like a bird below the waist, complete with wings. This strange creature is the source of the song and she is also strumming a harp.

The enticing melody grows louder and harder to resist. Several of the mounted cavalry dismount and begin to walk towards the source of the sound in an almost zombie-like fashion. Sir Corley and Lyonessa note that Squire Moonshadow is among them!

GM Notes:

While the melody is enticing, all of the PC’s can resist its effects for now. Only Sir Acerion, Yusef, and Dusk can actully see the harpy right now. Everyone else can only hear its melody.

Now what?

Showdown in Wrasseldown...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

As the soldiers circle the town of Wraaseldown looking for signs of a battle or any reason the people abandoned the town, the non-combatants, as well as the Duke, are escorted to a new Magickal Mansion conjured by Jallarzi. Almost fifteen minutes later, Chareos and Validar's attendants return.

Several of the Guardians are scouting and the advance guard of cavalry returns from their circling of the town.

“We’ve circled the entire town, milord,” the commander reports. “No sign of any people, but no signs of battle or a mass evacuation either. It is very strange.”

"Very well, Commander," Validar responds. "Form your men up to the left. Do not let anyone get too near the town as yet and await my orders." The riders quickly move off and enter formation.

Before the scouts return, a strange and haunting melody is heard coming from the town.

The enticing melody grows louder and harder to resist. Several of the mounted cavalry dismount and begin to walk towards the source of the sound in an almost zombie-like fashion. Sir Corley and Lyonessa note that Squire Moonshadow is among them!

"This is not good," Validar states. "A harpy or a nymph or some such thing," he grumbles. Riding over towards the cavalry, he issues more orders. "Have two men for every one stop those soldiers from entering the town! Then move all the troops further away from the city! It does not appear that we are dealing with mundane foes!"

Being unable to contact the scouts, Validar will signal to the flyers overhead. They should be able to see him from their vantage point, as the town is not that large. He will pass his lance to his squire and pull his sword from its scabbard, holding it over his head. From there he will signal attack by pointing the blade violently forward.

"If it is a harpy, then we will need magick to subdue it due to its flight. In any case, we caanot assume that the scouts are all functioning at this time."

"Po, Dellant and the squires will stop Squire Moonshadow and return him to the group. Guardians, you are with me, we shall ride to the source of this harsh song and deal with its singer. Chareos, be ready to use your offensive magick. And everyone keep your eyes open. Sir Corley, you have the point!"

Validar will follow Sir Corley into the town.

"This is very strange," Sherra mutters to herself as she keeps searching. No sign of a struggle and yet no one around. Sherra doesn't like the feeling she's getting.
Willing her magical armor to return to its normal black, Sherra crouches down and calls out softly to the boy, "Hello? Hi there."

If the boy doesn't respond, she'll move up slowly towards him and try again. If he does turn, she will keep her face friendly and with a smile in hopes not to frighten him.

Depending on what he does will determine Sherra's next actions. If he simply looks at her she will see if he will let her pick him up and ask, "What is your name? Where is your mother and father?"

Sherra also thinks she can hear something. She wonders at first if it's Lyonessa, but something seems different. It seems to have a luring effect and she wonders if maybe the bardess is trying to send a message or something.

Yusef:

Flapping his cloak-granted wings, Yusef cruises over the small farming town. As far as he can tell, the town is entirely vacated.

Then, a sound reaches his ears and he wheels about to draw nearer. As he comes over the roof of a building, he realizes that he's hearing music! The music seems to be calling to him and he follows the sound toward the source. Then, ducking past a chimney, he sees her - or it. A creature of some kind with the torso of a woman and the lower body of a bird! Never has he seen anything like this.

Blushing at the sight of her naked torso, Yusef turns her head to the side while continuing to fly closer. Off in the distance, he sees several of Validar's soldiers walking toward the barn on which the creature is perched. From the strange way they are moving, it seems they may not be entirely in control of themselves.

Guessing that the music may be at least partly responsible for the strange behavior of the cavalry soldiers, Yusef determines to put a stop to it. Winging closer to the barn, Yusef calls on the power of his patron to silence the music as soon as he's within range.

Attack plans...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

As Validar makes his plans to attack the singer in Wrasseldown, Lyonessa adds some strategic elements to the situation.

Lyonessa rushes over to get Validar's attention. "I can counter the effects of the music," she explains quickly. "I can't however, cover both the men and us if we venture forth. I can either keep all of them safe or all of those who press forward into the town."

Lyonessa will see what he wants her to do, but no matter which, she will start singing to counter the effects and quickly bring those under its spell to their senses.

"An excellent option, Lyonessa. Countering the nefarious effects of this inharmonious noise will certainly prove advantageous." Validar considers this new option for a moment. The singer is not likely a nymph as they only affect males (unless there is some opposite equivalent). Unless it is something else, Validar concludes it must be a harpy. His teacher, Lars Belbin, told him about the creatures, although he has yet to confront one personally.

Validar looks to Sir Corley for a moment, then states his answer. "Come with us, Lyonessa. If there is but one harpy, we shall destroy it quickly enough that it shall not cause much mischief. If there are more, or other dangers, I think it best that we have any abilities at our disposals, especially as we do not know the status of some of our own in town."

He gives one last command to the squires and his attendants, before riding into town. "Do not allow anyone to move into the town until we return."

With that, Validar leads the few Guardians here into town.

Sir Acerion:

"Understood," Acerion says simply, trading his warhorse for the pegasus. He hands the warhorse reigns over to Jocasta and tells her, "I shouldn't be gone long unless something vile is truly affecting this town. Stay here and stay alert. Danger could come from anywhere."

Seeing understanding in her eyes, Acerion takes to the air, his eyes lingering on Ivy down below a moment before he wheels around and joins Lyonessa's familiar as they fly out across the strangely quiet town.

The overhead view for Sir Acerion and Yusef isn’t much different. The town is seemingly deserted and shows no signs of life. Then a soft and subtle melody reaches their ears. It grows louder and more seductive with each passing moment. Searching for the source, both men find it after a few moments. Standing on top of the highest barn is a very strange creature. She has the naked torso of a human female, but is like a bird below the waist, complete with wings. This strange creature is the source of the song and she is also strumming a harp.

"Very odd, indeed," Acerion says aloud as he circles the town from another angle. There doesn't seem to be anyone about. Then he spots her, or at least it appears to be a her at first. Seeing the bird legs and wings, he isn't so sure. Then he also hears the melody.

"What an abomination," Acerion says and senses something odd about the music. Wondering if this is the cause of the missing townsfolk, he circles in closer. The paladin reaches out with his senses, trying to determine if the creature is evil. He has a hunch of just what she might be.

"Too bad I didn't bring a lance," he says mulling over the thought. That might prove to be a beneficial tactic, and one he will have to practice with once time allows for it.

Acerion will look to see if the pegasus could land on the rooftop that the bird woman is perched on. If it's not a big enough space, then he will contemplate leaping from the pegasus from a few feet up and close on the creature with his holy axe.

Sir Corley

Sir Corley:

The strange situation in Wrasseldown becomes even stranger as an unusual alluring melody fills the air.
Baron Validar wrote:"This is not good," Validar states. "A harpy or a nymph or some such thing," he grumbles. Riding over towards the cavalry, he issues more orders. "Have two men for every one stop those soldiers from entering the town! Then move all the troops further away from the city! It does not appear that we are dealing with mundane foes!"
“Do not stop until those affected are normal once more,” Sir Corley adds. “Only then will all of you remain safe!”
Baron Validar wrote:"Po, Dellant and the squires will stop Squire Moonshadow and return him to the group. Guardians, you are with me, we shall ride to the source of this harsh song and deal with its singer. Chareos, be ready to use your offensive magicks. And everyone keep your eyes open. Sir Corley, you have the point!"
If Validar’s hunch is correct, then the enemy is an airborne target meaning that his lance will be ineffectual. Thus Sir Corley hands it to Squire Bascar and directs him to assist in holding back Squire Moonshadow. Lady Lyonessa explains that she can counter the effects of this song, thus protecting us. Baron Validar has her accompany us.

“Then let us ride!” Sir Corley calls out, urging his mount on. We ride into town in search of the source of this enticing melody.

Argent:

Argent moves from window to window in the small town in search of anyone. Alas, she finds only empty rooms. There is no clutter indicating any signs of battle or that the people were planned to evacuate. It’s like they just suddenly left.

As Argent peers in one window, a soft melody reaches her ears. After listening for a few moments, Argent realizes that the tune is trying to lure her to the singer! It is a magical summons of some kind!

Rising up once more, Argent flies over the roof of a house in search of the source of song. The singer is quickly spotted! It is what Argent believes to be harpy strumming, appropriately enough, a harp. She can see both Sir Acerion and Yusef closing in on the target, while on the edge of town riders are moving closer.

“Let see if I can soften her up a bit,” Argent mutters as she moves closer. Once in range, Argent casts Magic Missile in hopes of disrupting the harpy's song. After that, she’ll cast Halo of Eyes while Sir Acerion and Yusef get closer.

The Guardians are escorting the new Duke of Streel towards his domain. They’ve reached Wrasseldown, a small farming town just inside the old Elcadan border. But much to their surprise, the town is seemingly deserted. Several of the Guardians go off to explore the town while the others wait.

Then a subtle seductive melody is heard and some of the cavalrymen dismount and begin to walk into town seemingly in a trance. Other unaffected men are dispatched to stop them. Lyonessa begins to sing and her song cancels out the melody. Those in the immediate area around Lyonessa regain their senses. The cavalrymen back off, while the Guardians begin to advance. Sir Corley leads the way followed closely by Baron Validar, Lyonessa, Ivy, Chareos, Crysania, and Serena.

Elsewhere in town, Sherra has discovered at least one of the townsfolk. The dark haired adventuress has found a young boy in tattered clothing hungrily eating whatever he can find in a general store. Sherra wills away the blending effect of her magical leather armor and approaches.

Sherra calls out to the boy, but he does not respond. She moves closer and tries again, but still no response. The distant melody is heard and the boy does not seem to hear that either. Then it dawns on Sherra. The boy must not be able to hear!

Overhead, Sir Acerion and Yusef have identified the source of the siren song as a harpy. The half-human, half-bird looking creature stands atop the highest barn in town strumming a harp while singing. Yusef hovers and casts a Silence spell at the harpy and her song suddenly comes to an end.

Sir Acerion wings closer and tries to determine if she is evil or not. After a few moments of concentration, the paladin determines that the harpy is intensely evil. Even more evil than the most vile human can be. The creature before you can only be demonic or diabolical in origin!

But that is not all that Sir Acerion can sense. Two other very strong sources of evil are close by, most likely inside the barn the harpy is standing upon. One of these sources also seems to be the same as the harpy; the other does fall within the human range of evil, but is still extreme. Even worse, dozens, if not more of other lesser evils are detected. Almost too many to count within the barn!

Argent flies closer, along with Yusef. The harpy fled before she could get her Magic Missile off. As the two close in on Sir Acerion, there is movement down on the ground. The barn doors are flung open and hideous creatures begin to pour forth!

The creatures that rush forth are hideously twisted caricatures of a human. The face has been contorted, the teeth elongated and razor sharp. The skin is now tough and leathery and has shrunk greatly. It’s as if everything underneath the skin is now gone as the skin now fits tightly over the skeleton underneath outlining every bone. The arms have been elongated and now end in wicked, razor sharp claws. These unnatural abominations rush forth in seemingly unlimited numbers.

GM Notes:

Gruesome, isn’t it?

I’ve updated the Outer Kingdoms map in the private area. It now includes Timberline, High Guard, and Woodcrest. Ansimont was moved it its correct location as well. This map shows the entire Outer Kingdom area.

There are also two Elcadan related files. The first covers the city as a whole, the second focuses on the Crosstown area.

Now what?

Yusef:

Yusef's supplication to Celestian proves successful and the music stops instantly. Glancing over at Lord Acerion, Yusef dives toward the bird-woman. She looks up at them, seeming almost to read Yusef's intentions, then simply vanishes!

Unsure what happened exactly, Yusef remembers his encounter with Anja and her sisters. Perhaps she has simply vanished. Since that may be a possibility, he will swoop through where she was standing moments ago.

Even as he dives towards the creature's last visible location, Yusef sees the hideous creatures flooding from within the barn. They appear somewhat like emaciated humans, but with long, sharp talons and distorted faces. Worse, there seems to be no limit to their numbers!

First, the bird-woman. Then once she is subdued or discovered to be gone, it will be time to turn on this new abberation.

Argent:

Rising up over the buildings, Argent flies towards the source of the music. She spots Yusef and Sir Acerion heading towards that location. Unexpectedly the song simply ends and a few moments later the singer vanishes. Then hideous monsters begin to emerge from the barn!

“EWWW! What ugly things!”

Changing her tactics, Argent will forgo Halo of Eyes and instead will cast Wall of Fire about 25’ away from the barn across the entrance, separating the monsters from the approaching riders. If they want battle so bad, let them rush through fire and destroy themselves to get it!

Battle for Wrasseldown...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

Validar decides to lead the Guardians into Wrasseldown after the magickal song begins to affect the soldiers. He moves the soldiers away and the group enters the town on horseback.

In moments, they close in on the largest barn and the source of the singing, but it has been stopped. Likely caused by one of the scouts. Validar scans the sky and sees Sir Acerion, Argent and Yusef all in action nearby.

Just then the barn doors are flung open and the group is assaulted by a horrific stench as well as the sight and sound of hundreds of undead monstrosities rush forth from the barn.

"These are not zombies or skeletons and they move faster than either, it seems," Validar says to himself as they near the evil mob. "They also look much more dangerous."

There is no sight of the harpy at the moment, just a rush of ugly, undead. Validar realizes that these are likely the townsfolk of Wrasseldown and he wonders if a Deville has been involved in this abomination. "Form up here!" Validar will order, a short distance from the horde. "We will make our attack in a coordinated strike!"

As the Guardians and their allies all join up in a small semi-circle, suddenly a Wall of Fire springs into existence between them and the undead. It seems to block them in with the barn itself. Validar is curious if these undead will continue to advance or if their leader is about and will give them a different command.

"We should not wait for the enemy to attack or expect them to rush blindly through the wall," Validar says. "Mages, hit the area inside the Wall of Fire and the barn with your area effect spells. It does not appear that there are any left here to be saved."

"Ivy and Crysania, be ready to remove any that you can, but I want us to be more concerned about the leaders of this group. We know not who we face and it is certainly more than mere harpies! Serena, Ivy or Crysania, can you detect anything around besides these monstrosities?"

"Try to locate the leaders and concentrate your attacks upon them!" Validar says loud enough for the scouts to also hear. "We need to know what else we are up against."

"We should be able to defend ourselves against these undead, especially due to Ivy and Crysania. Sir Corley, be ready to ride with me and circle the barn. We may find more trouble there." Validar waits for a moment to see what the scouts or mages have found and what effects their magickal attacks will have on the horde of undead.

Chareos

As the last of Validar’s kin move into the Magic Mansion, Chareos turns and kicks his mount urging it forward. Leaning down to cut down on the wind, Chareos can see Validar leading his fellow Guardians forward. Not being one to be left behind, he urges his mount forward. Warnings are shouted at him to slow and not go into town.

Thundering past them, Chareos does not heed their warning, slowing down as he comes up upon the others. It is realized that the harpy is nowhere to be seen, but the doors of the barn open with the onslaught of twisted human-like creatures.
The other Guardians led by Sir Corley and Baron Validar come riding up as the barn doors are opened and the monsters charge out. None here has ever seen anything like this before!
Trying to calm his horse from bucking Chareos will see what his options are as a fiery wall erupts before them. He will guage the distance to the front of the approaching things and where the wall of fire goes up(assuming it goes up before his turn). He will cast a fireball to maximize its affects on the oncoming enemy. (center it over the undead yet being mindful of his friends.)
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:
Sherra calls out to the boy, but he does not respond. She moves closer and tries again, but still no response. The distant melody is heard and the boy does not seem to hear that either. Then it dawns on Sherra. The boy must not be able to hear!
"Hmmm, I don't think you can hear little one," Sherra muses and then moves around to try to not startle him before she reaches out to pick him up. She will keep a pleasant smile on her face and hope she doesn't scare him too badly.

Then the singing stops. Bless Tymora, she thinks, but then hears a serious of sounds running together. She thinks she picks out the sound of magical fire erupting and hears Validar bellowing, but can't quite make out what he's ordering. Clearly a battle is about to begin, and it's no place for a small child.

Hopefully Sherra has been able to scoop the child into her arms. She will concentrate once more on her armor to blend in with the surroundings and then will move silently from the building and back towards the edge of town. Hopefully victory for her friends doesn't hinge on her participation.

Sir Corley:

The effects of the cavalrymen affected by the song fade as Lady Lyonessa begins to sing. Squire Moonshadow comes to his senses and he and the others withdraw.

“Well done, Lady Lyonessa. Let us hope the rest of this situation is handled as easily.”

Urging his mount onward, Sir Corley rides into town with his companions. All the trouble seems to be centered around the barns near the middle of town. The knight can see Sir Acerion, Lady Argent and Yusef in the sky over that general area. Then the door to the barn is flung open and a horde of monstrosities issue forth! They then quickly fade from sight as a Wall of Fire erupts between us and them.

Valdiar wrote:"That may prove helpful as well, Ivy of Azrella. For the moment, let us wait until the initial scouts have determined there is nothing imminently amiss. I would not want you to be ambushed by something you do not detect. Be ready and we will commence with that, although I do not wish you to go alone."
Ivy is about to say something else, but decides against it. “As you wish.”

Lyonessa is able to counter the alluring effects of the song and free those men around us, much to Ivy’s relief. The order comes to ride into town. Upon reaching the barns, the doors open and hideously twisted creatures emerge!

“By the Blue Lady! What are those things?”

Ivy will slip down from her horse and try to sense the presence of any undead in the area. Once detected, she’ll alert those near her. Assuming that the approaching horde are undead, Ivy will turn them once they are close enough, trusting in her faith to destroy these abominations.

“I have no special powers over undead, unlike Lady Ivy here,” Crysania answers. “But I can help protect her against this onslaught. I can create a barrier for protection that will allow her to use her skills unhindered. It would be best for you to step away.”

Dismounting, Crysania will cast Blade Barrier in front of her and Ivy. The barrier is horizontal before them and 60’ wide. Grasping her axe, Crysania prepares to smash any undead who circle around the barrier to reach Ivy.

Serena eyes the unnatural creatures approaching before the Wall of Fire obscures them. She decides against casting any area effect spells right now and trusting Crysania’s magical barrier to protect them for a time, she’ll instead concentrate on detecting any evil magic in the nearby area. But once the undead do arrive, she’ll try to turn them before proceeding to other options.

Baron Validar -

Grasping her axe tightly, Crysania rides into the seemingly deserted town with the others. “This has the feel of a trap to me,” the priestess notes. “We should be on guard against ambushes.”

"Indeed, it does at that!" Validar responds. "It would be simple for enemies of the Duke to know that we were coming and seek to destroy him. It was not hidden or even misrepresented. But that is the decision of the Duke and as such, we must respect his wishes and act accordingly."

"If it is an ambush, then we shall spring it soon enough."

"We should not wait for the enemy to attack or expect them to rush blindly through the wall," Validar says. "Mages hit the area inside the Wall of Fire and the barn with your area effect spells. It does not appear that there are any left here to be saved."

“You can’t know that for sure!” Ivy yells. “You might have just sentenced any survivors to their deaths!”

"There are precious few scenarios that allow for survivors and if there are townsfolk left, it is unlikely they are here! Even if there are people alive, our attack does not ensure their death. And it is vital we defeat the leaders of this horrible assault! There is simply too much risk in taking the time to explore all options. I'll not trade the life of one person here for the remote possibility that you suggest. The risk is too great." Ivy's convictions are strong, but sometimes they are not simply practical, Validar thinks.

"Tell me that they are not undead and we shall turn this into a rescue mission. Otherwise, we must treat this as a battle first and foremost!"

"Ivy and Crysania be ready to remove any that you can, but I want us to be more concerned about the leaders of this group. We know not who we face and it is certainly more than mere harpies! Serena, Ivy or Crysania, can you detect anything around besides these monstrosities?"

“I possess no special senses, Baron. My training mostly centered around battle.”

"Do you not have any Detection spells available to you?," Validar asks. "I am concerned also about locating any sources of evil. Members of the Deville family and their ilk may be about. If anyone was conducting an ambush here, it likely would be them."

“At your command, Baron,” Sir Corley states. “It looks like I’ll be able to employ my new blade to avenge these poor unfortunates very soon.”

"That we shall, my friend," Validar responds. "It is important that we take out those responsible for this abomination."

“I have no special powers over undead, unlike Lady Ivy here,” Crysania answers. “But I can help protect her against this onslaught. I can create a barrier for protection that will allow her to use her skills unhindered. It would be best for you to step away.”

"Very well." Validar dismounts and moves away a short distance, but keeps his horse at the ready. He is not certain if he will need to move or fight and does not wish to risk his horse at the hands of those foul creatures.

"Do not spend all your efforts on these undead alone," Validar cautions to everyone. "There are likely more dangerous enemies about. Even if the entire town were at our necks as undead monstrosities, we must concentrate our efforts on locating their leaders and defeating them."

Validar continues to wait for more information and keeps his eyes trained all about for other possible avenues of attack, both for them and against them.

Post by Acerion »

Sir Acerion:

Sir Acerion wings closer and tries to determine if she is evil or not. After a few moments of concentration, the paladin determines that the harpy is intensely evil. Even more evil than the most vile human can be. The creature before you can only be demonic or diabolical in origin!

"A truly wretched creature you be," Acerion says as he wings low, preparing to leap from the saddle. However, as he moves into position, the scene changes.

"An entire gathering," the paladin mutters, but the winged bird-woman is the most immediate of threats since she seems to be actively looking for unwitting recruits or an unholy meal.

The harpy is surprised when her song comes to an end, but a look of amusement comes to her face upon seeing Sir Acerion wing closer. A smile begins to creep onto her still attractive features as she seemingly vanishes from sight. No type of spell casting was involved. This was simply an act of will.

Argent flies closer, along with Yusef. The harpy fled before she could get her Magic Missile off. As the two close in on Sir Acerion, there is movement down on the ground. The barn doors are flung open and hideous creatures begin to pour forth!

"Hideous and a coward," Acerion says with a scoff. It's not surprising though, and he will concentrate to see if the other major presences of evil are still within as the horde busts free from the barn.

Acerion sees spells flare to life and hears Validar issuing orders, smiling despite the grimness of the situation. Baron Validar will never be one to lead from anywhere but the front.

Depending on what his senses tell him, Acerion will wing over to Validar, taking caution to avoid the spell effects. Calling down, he will say, "There seems to be two strong presences of evil that were mingled in with that horde now rushing you. I would suspect they are leaders or summoners."

If their presence can still be felt within the barn, Acerion will add, "Do you wish Argent, Yusef and myself to deal with the pair within the barn? Hopefully it will cut the strings, or at least the drive, from those foul creatures."

“Well done, Lady Lyonessa. Let us hope the rest of this situation is handled as easily.”

Since Lyonessa is still singing, she gives Sir Corley a smile and nod. She would hate for her counter to be undone.

As they get closer, the alluring sound is suddenly cut off. Lyonessa waits a few moments and then stops singing. It would appear whatever was the source is either hiding, fled or dead.

Lyonessa catches a glimpse of these things before Argent's Wall of Fire goes up. She shudders and hopes the fire will drive them back. It would not appear that Validar wishes to wait on such a chance.

"We should not wait for the enemy to attack or expect them to rush blindly through the wall," Validar says. "Mages, hit the area inside the Wall of Fire and the barn with your area effect spells. It does not appear that there are any left here to be saved."

Not having any real area of effect spells, Lyonessa has to wait. She wasn't expecting to be using magic against such foes in more civilized lands. Hopefully it doesn't hurt their chances.

She does prepare her Monster Summoning spell but doesn't cast it yet. If they break through in great numbers, then she will summon more allies. While Lyonessa waits, she has Dusk circle the other buildings to make sure no other of these things are closing on them.

Validar hears Acerion's assessment and is glad for it. "There are at least two leaders, evil enough to be detected!" Validar shouts, relaying the info to the Guardians. "Find them and destroy them!" he shouts.

If their presence can still be felt within the barn, Acerion will add, "Do you wish Argent, Yusef and myself to deal with the pair within the barn? Hopefully it will cut the strings, or at least the drive, from those foul creatures."

"Indeed. The leaders are our primary concern. See what you can do to eliminate them! I believe that we can handle this horde just fine out here."

The Guardians begin their counter-attack.
