New Frontiers #90

Arrival:

The Guardians have returned to Pyris, where their adventures began seemingly a long time ago. The circumstances are different this time as the rulers of Pyris are in flux. The former Baron is now the Duke of a larger realm and Validar has become the Baron in his father’s place. A Ceremony of Transference will be held tomorrow and then the day after that all will join the Duke on his ride towards his new rule. But there is much to do before that ride can begin.
"A pleasure to meet you, Your Grace," Lyonessa says, her heart pounding slightly being in front of even more royalty. She always worries that she'll make a mistake somewhere. "Congratulations to you as well, and thank you for such a reception."
“The pleasure is ours, Lady Lyonessa,” the Duke answers with a smile.

“We have heard tales of your songs and ballads,” the Duchess adds. “Would you be kind enough to play at this evening’s feast?”

Validar speaks with his younger sister, the Lady Rachel VanArkus.
Validar furrows his brow and frowns. "We'll be sure to keep you on a short leash, sister," he says; only partially joking.
“You’re always so over-protective,” Rachel bemoans.

Meeting the Duke:

Later that day, Validar meets in private with his father.

“There is one more decision I made during your absence,” the Duke states. “Named the Duchy of Elcadan, it would surely rankle many a loyal Pyrisian, therefore I’ve decided to rename the greater realm as a symbol of our new unity. Since the Streel River is the main water artery and the Streel Plain where most of our food comes from, the new realm shall be known as the Duchy of Streel.”

Feast:

The feast that night is a pleasant, informal gathering. Stories are told and Lyonessa performs her songs and ballads. She also gains new material from the tales woven by the Lady Gwendolyn, the daughter of the original Validar who founded the Barony of Pyris nearly sixty years ago. Lady Gwendolyn was the Baroness of Pyris for many years before stepping down to her son, Relon.

Odds & Ends:

The second day begins with many of the Guardians seeking proper dress for the Ceremony of Transfer or just doing some shopping on their own. Several of the Guardians are involved in a private brunch arranged by Baron Validar and Lady Gabriella.

Around midday, Sir Acerion can be spotted flying overhead on his Pegasus.

A pair of ladies arrives at Castle Pyris shortly after that who wishes to see any of the Knights here. They are Sara Ebonov and Jocasta Demendria. Both are among the potential candidates seeking to become squires. They took it upon themselves to ride to Pyris in the hopes of encountering any of the new Knights here.

Ceremony:

It is late afternoon when the Ceremony of Transfer is held. The start of the festivities is long and tedious as the Heralds introduce all the guests by their full titles. The guests line the sides of the great Baron’s Audience Hall. Finally, the moment does arrive; the attendants escort Validar into the chamber. The nobleman is dressed in a white military uniform with a long, fur-trimmed cloak.

Duke Relon awaits him on the Baron’s throne. Behind the Duke on either side are the Duchess Lysandra and Lady Rachel, both splendidly dressed in beautiful gowns. Lady Gabriella stands off to the side, along with many of Validar’s companions. The Duke says a few words and then on completion places the ruling coronet on Baron Validar’s head. The guests break out into applause and those present congratulate Validar and wish him well.

Once that is over, the local musicians begin to play and those who are so inclined can dance. The doors to the feast hall are opened where food is waiting. The festivities last long into the night.

Lady Gabriella Allonica:

Baron Validar wrote:"Indeed. It promises to be even more hectic and busy than today was. While I have been enjoying the newness of all this, in a way it will be simpler once back on the road. Only a limited number of worries to deal with."
“And that we shall have soon enough. I imagine that the idea of succeeding your father was still many years off and you would have had much more freedom to act than you do now. I am sure the barony will be in good hands while you are away, but it would still be prudent to return frequently. Especially during these times.”
Baron Validar wrote:"That is very true. While I do not expect any sort of attack until after we reach Ansimont and are riding to Elcadan proper, I would welcome someone to tip their hand so early. It would make some of this process potentially easier."
“Strategy is your field of expertise, Validar. I have no idea where or when any such attack may come.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Indeed. Although after as busy a day as I had yesterday it was more recovery than sleep," he says with a hint of a chuckle. "And how have you been this morn?" He gives her a lingering kiss on the lips in greeting.
“Oh mostly I've been preparing for the day to come, for the most part. Trying to imagine how the conversation at the brunch will flow and what words would be necessary to put it back on course should the need be. And of course, preparing my dress for this evening and other such niceties.”

Once at the brunch, Lady Gabriella will warmly greet the others as they arrive. This is more of an informal gathering and not a negotiation, so Lady Gabriella is more content to observe. She can’t help put notice that Lady Ivy seems very uncomfortable.

“The poor girl is probably overwhelmed by all of this.”

Lady Gabriella thinks about saying something to her when they are in private, but decides against it. It is better to let her works this out on her own and let Ivy be the one who approaches should she need advice or counseling.

“Well, I think this went rather well,” Lady Gabriella notes as the brunch nears it end. “It helped clear the air and put everyone concerned on the same page. I thank you all for coming.”

The rest of the afternoon is spent preparing for the evening to come. Lady Gabriella arrives at the ceremony early and is introduced alone. She’ll mingle, speaking with past acquaintances and making new ones. There are many nobles in Pyris that she has yet to meet and this will be an excellent opportunity to make a good first impression.

Hours later, the ceremony proper is ready to begin. Lady Gabriela takes a position near the baron’s throne, but off to the side with the other guests. The ceremony is brief and Validar is officially named the Baron of Pyris. Lady Gabriella is among the first to congratulate Validar after his immediate family. The pair exchanges a kiss and a hug and the next hour is spent by Validar’s side as those present congratulate him. It’s also an opportunity to meet those that Lady Gabriella didn’t meet the first time around.

The pair enjoys the first dance and will dance for a time before settling in at the feast hall. The hour is late when Lady Gabriella retires for the evening. There will not be much sleep this evening as tomorrow will come soon enough and we’ll be departing for Elcadan.

Lady Vera Ardel:
Sir Corley wrote:“It is not flattery, milady, when it is the truth.”
“Again you flatter me, good Sir Knight.”
Sir Corley wrote:“Then let us be off, milady! Indeed, the repast does promise to be of great interest! I trust that many exciting tales will be spun that will hold all spellbound.”
“I eagerly await hearing of your exploits, Sir Corley.”

Next day, the Lady Ardel attends Baron Validar’s brunch.
“And my vow still remains,” Sir Corley states. Stepping up to the Lady Ardel, he’ll get down on one knee and take her hand. “I do swear, my lady, on my honor as a Knight of the Realm that I shall not rest until your lands have been freed of the scum that infest them and that you have be restored to your proper position!”
"With one such as Sir Corley on this path, we are assured of being successful," Validar adds. "He is as tenacious as they come."
Lady Ardel is mildly surprised by the gesture made by Sir Corley, but then again, he does tend to make these dramatic displays. It’s all part of his charm. Looking into Sir Corley’s eyes, Lady Vera wills say, “I believe you with all my heart, Sir Corley.”
"Nor has my vow diminished," Acerion adds in. "I fully intend to restore all that has been taken from our families," with a nod to the Lady Ardel, "as well as all the good people of Stone Ridge and those others who have lost lands from this tide of evil. The humanoids shall be pushed back into the holes by which they swarmed from."
"Indeed," Validar states. "These are two men that I trust with my life and I know they would die before allowing such a vow to go uncompleted. This action will not only help Stone Ridge, but be a significant event for most of western Cynalon."
“Your vows mean a great deal to me,” Lady Ardel says gratefully. “I just pray that there is enough of our home to make it worth this effort, Sir Acerion.”

Lady Ardel is content to listen as plans of battle are laid out. She feels as if she should say more, but many of the others are quiet on the matter too.
Validar looks to Ivy briefly to see if see has a comment, but by her demeanor and silence, he passes that over quickly. He turns to Lady Ardel next. "What are your concerns about not only this campaign, but what will initially happen once the task has been completed? This will be a much different experience than that of the Duke entering Elcadan. You will be starting nearly from scratch." Validar waits for Lady Ardel or others to add their thoughts.
“It seems to me that you gentlemen have everything well in hand. It is a good and well thought out plan of action. I pray that your success is just as easy.”

“Yes, there is the problem of starting from scratch, as you say Baron Validar. But alas I would think that the situation isn’t as troublesome as what your father the Duke will have to contend with. There is no one currently in place, so those I choose will be allies to start with. I doubt I’ll have any enemies among those few Stone Ridge nobles that do remain.”

After the brunch breaks out, Sir Corley approaches. “Lady Ardel, would you do me the honor of attending this afternoon's ceremony with me? It would be unseemly for you to arrive alone and I for one would enjoy your company.”

“I would be delighted, Sir Corley,” Lady Vera answers with a smile.

The rest of the afternoon is spent preparing for the ceremony with the assistance of Lady Angelina. Finally, Sir Corley arrives to escort her to the ceremony. He compliments her on her attire and two depart arm in arm.

At the hall, the Herald announces their arrival. “Presenting Sir Corley Rowan and Lady Vera Ardel!”

Hand in hand, the pair enters the hall and mingles while waiting for the ceremony proper to begin. The Duke arrives and the domain is officially awarded to Baron Validar. Congratulations follow.

“Congratulations, Baron Validar,” Lady Vera states. “May your reign be long and fruitful.”

A formal dance follows and while Lady Vera has some experience in this, Sir Corley’s skill surprises her.

“You dance divinely, Sir Corley.”

The pair share many close dances before retiring to the feast hall for the evening meal. Lady Ardel enjoys Sir Corley’s company late into the evening and beyond.

Sir Corley

Sir Corley Rowan:
Baron Validar wrote:"Indeed it is, my friend. This day I will officially take yet another step that I have planned and hoped for my entire life. Now I am responsible for Pyris and all of her people. It is a daunting, yet welcome task at this stage of my life."
“But one which you are most prepared for. You’ve know this day would eventually come for a long time now, just not perhaps this soon.”
Baron Validar wrote:"We did not want to overindulge this morning, what with the feast last night and more food to be served this evening. But I think it should satisfy all. As for what this is about, it is the initial meeting of the leaders that are reclaiming Stone Ridge. I want everyone to be of one mind and to start to get some opinions and ideas from other people. This cannot be only my plan any longer."
“Yes, the food does look most pleasing. Ah, that sounds like a splendid idea! Yes, best to get things moving as early as possible.”
Baron Validar wrote:Corley sits down with a heaping plate of food, accompanied by some smiles from some of the others. Validar raises his cup to his friend. "I am not sure which is greater, the man's stomach or his heart. Truly each is boundless in their strength," Validar jokes.
”I am still young and growing,” Sir Corley counters with a grin. “I must keep my strength up.”
Lady Ardel wrote:Lady Ardel is mildly surprised by the gesture made by Sir Corley, but then again, he does tend to make these dramatic displays. It’s all part of his charm. Looking into Sir Corley’s eyes, Lady Vera wills say, “I believe you with all my heart, Sir Corley.”
“I will not disappoint,” Sir Corley vows as he gallantly kisses the hand of Lady Ardel.
Baron Validar wrote:"A vital task will also be recovering the rest of the Guardian Shield. That will enable Stone Ridge to remain safe for the foreseeable future. Clearly, we must complete the situation with the Devilles and winter gives us that time, as Corley mentioned. At the moment, I would consider the situation as progressing nicely."
“Ah, yes, I had forgotten about the Guardian Shield. It would indeed make the task much simpler. Multiple sorties may not even be necessary, just one strike force to enter the city and put the Guardian Shield into place.”
Baron Validar wrote:Validar looks to Ivy briefly to see if see has a comment, but by her demeanor and silence, he passes that over quickly.
“My only real concern is the lack of intelligence that we have regarding the Stone Ridge area. Do any plans to the city still exist? The key to any battle strategy is to know the conditions of the battlefield. Here we do not.”
After the brunch breaks out, Sir Corley approaches. “Lady Ardel, would you do me the honor of attending this afternoons ceremony with me? It would be unseemly for you to arrive alone and I for one would enjoy your company.”

“I would be delighted, Sir Corley,” Lady Vera answers with a smile.
“As would I, Lady Ardel. I’ll meet you outside your chambers later this afternoon. Until then you shall be in my thoughts.”

The afternoon is spent interviewing potential squires. Sir Corley settles on two local boys. One is a half-elf, but those are fairly common in Pyris given their close proximity to the Elfholds. Both satisfy Sir Corley and he accepts them. Time will be spent talking, but no training will take place this day.

He notes that two other potentials have arrived to Castle Pyris, fine looking ladies the both of them. It seems that they will end up in the service of his fellow Knights.

Excusing himself, Sir Corley returns to his chambers to spruce up his appearance before meeting with the fair Lady Ardel. He knocks on her door and waits while the Lady finishes her preparations.

“I must say that you look divine, Lady Ardel. Rarely has such a vision of loveliness graced these halls!”

“My your reign to long and fruitful.”
“Well done, my friend,” Sir Corley adds, heartily shaking the new Baron’ s hand.
A formal dance follows and while Lady Vera has some experience in this, Sir Corley’s skill surprises her.

“You dance divinely, Sir Corley.”
“I was trained in dance from an early age,” Sir Corley explains. “My instructors said that it would help me become more limber and have more freedom in battle. It has served me well, both in battle and in gala’s such as this.”
The pair share many close dances before retiring to the feast hall for the evening meal. Lady Ardel enjoys Sir Corley’s company late into the evening and beyond.
The evening is a most pleasant one, but the demands of ones station are fully felt come the morning.

“Alas, I must depart for the time being, my fair lady, although I wish it not. I must gather my gear and join the procession of Duke Relon. From there I shall be leading our comrades into the battle against the vile Deville family. I do not know when I will be graced with your presence once more, but you will never be far from my thoughts and my heart, milady.”

Sir Corley will kiss Lady Ardel one last time before departing her chambers. The knight moves quietly through the pre-dawn castle towards his own quarters. His gear was arranged there the day before and his squires will be arriving shortly to assist the knight into his armor. But until then Sir Corley will sleep a bit more. The day’s journey promises to be a long one.

Lady Argent:

Argent stops at Chareos’ room to see how his preparations are coming along.
For several moments Chareos looks his date up and down, his breath clearly taken away from him. Meeting her gaze he will say softly, “You look radiant, my dear. Clearly you will be the most beautiful woman at the Gala this night.”
“Well, who am I to argue with someone as intelligent as you?” Argent answers with a grin and a hug.
Chareos will take any suggestions Argent purposes even if they may sound absurd, as these types of functions are alien to him.
Argent fidgets with Chareos attire for a few minutes, but no major changes is needed.

“That should be suitable. Ready to go?”

Upon reaching the castle and the audience hall, the pair is introduced by the herald. “Presenting Lady Argent and Lord Chareos!”

“You know, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of that,” Argent whispers to Chareos.

Moving deeper into the hall, Argent will converse with friends and compliment then on their attire. The Invoker easily moves from conversation to conversation making new acquaintances as she goes. Clearly she is in her element now.

The ceremony is soon over congratulations are offered to the new baron. “Well done, Baron Validar,” Lady Argent states. “You’re inheriting a fine realm.”

A dance follows and Argent is keen on trying it. Chareos notes that he doesn’t know how to dance. “Neither do I,” Argent adds, “but you learn by doing.”

The pair will try to dance among the others, enjoying the closeness of each other’s body.

“I wonder who that woman is with Sir Corley? She’s very beautiful. It seems our knight has been holding back on us.”

After the dance, a fine meal follows and Argent is happy to converse with those near her. It is late in the evening when she’s ready to return to the Inn for some well-needed sleep.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Ivy:
Sir Acerion wrote:"That is very true," Acerion says, but has no further insight into it. "I guess we will both see tomorrow then."
“We shall indeed.”
Sir Acerion wrote:"There is very little you could ever do that would disappoint me," Acerion says, but leaves much more unsaid. "Your faith and devotion are powerful and should never be placed second to anything. You should never compromise yourself for something that would bring you conflict."
“The idea of wearing a fancy dress just does not sit will with me. Maybe someday it will, but right now I’m not ready for such things. I’ve been poor when it comes to money almost all of my life, so such things seem an unneeded luxury to me. Thank you for being so understanding.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Ivy's mannerisms are growing increasingly hostile towards all of this, Acerion notes. Not against any particular person, but instead against the uncomfortable surroundings. This puts a heavy weight upon his brow, but he does not let it show during the brunch, instead focusing on the reason behind the gathering.
That’s a bit of an exaggeration there. She was cordial—polite—to everyone at the brunch. She just hasn’t said much while there and has the look of not really wanting to be there. The above sounds like she’s sitting there with a scowl on her face like a child refusing to eat their veggies!
Sir Acerion wrote:"Nor has my vow diminished," Acerion adds in. "I fully intend to restore all that has been taken from our families," with a nod to the Lady Ardel, "as well as all the good people of Stone Ridge and those others who have lost lands from this tide of evil. The humanoids shall be pushed back into the holes by which they swarmed from."
“It is my hope to see this accomplished too,” Ivy unexpectedly adds. “I never had a real family or a place to call home. Both of you did, but then lost them. Family is very important to me and would want you both to regain what you’ve lost.”
Sir Corley wrote:“Ah, yes, I had forgotten about the Guardian Shield. It would indeed make the task much simpler. Multiple sorties may not even be necessary, just one strike force to enter the city and put the Guardian Shield into place.”
“Half the shield has been recovered, but the other half remains missing. The Shields of Azrella and Mystra remain missing.”
Baron Validar wrote:"We must look at this from a point of helping the people of the barony as well. Granted their numbers are depleted and many have scattered, but many remain as well. Their well-being is an important part of this task and we will need a social plan to not only assist these people, but also to bring others into the territory. My proposal would be to establish some sort of plan, on a larger scale, of course, similar to what we did between Elcadan and Twin Forks. The priesthoods can assist in helping people move and spreading the word amongst the needy of Elcadan. Clearly, the city is over-crowded and there will be a need to rectify the sorry state of several of Elcadan's neighborhoods. Many of the people who are deserving could find a new life further north in either Ardelphia or other cities that would welcome strong workers."

“It is a good plan,” Ivy speaks up. “I am sure that there are many who would like the chance to start over again, whether it be in Stone Ridge or even Akorros once that city has been liberated. The only problem I foresee is the ability for these poor people to make the journey to Stone Ridge. Some assistance might be needed there.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Later on since Ivy is nowhere to be found, Acerion hears that some of the potential squires have begun arriving. He will make his way down, seeing Corley already speaking to two young men. Acerion will look around and see who else has arrived, especially curious if any of those from the inner kingdom that were on the initial list have shown up yet. He figures those of the outer areas would still be traveling, not having the benefit of the Stone House or magical steeds.

Seeing Ivy is still not about, Acerion will go and check on his steeds since it has been quite some time. He will allow his Pegasus to get out and be free to fly since the paladin figures of any of the mounts that might go stir crazy first, it would be a Pegasus.
After the brunch, Ivy steps out onto one of the tall towers at Castle Pyris for some fresh air and to ponder things for a time. After awhile, she notes Sir Acerion flying his Pegasus over head. The sight cannot help but bring a smile to her face and Ivy will wave when she is sure Sir Acerion can see her. When is becomes clear that he is going to land, Ivy rushes to join him in the courtyard.

“I imagine that was enjoyable,” Ivy offers as Sir Acerion lands. “To have that kind of freedom must be wonderful. I’m sorry I’ve been so quiet lately. This is all so new to me and I really don’t know what to make of it. It just doesn’t mesh well with the way I was raised. But I promise I will do my best to live up to these responsibilities.”

Later that afternoon, the time for the Ceremony of Transfer is at hand. Most likely they’ll arrive well before it begins, but not too early. Ivy is a bit startled when the herald calls out, “Presenting Sir Acerion Kalindor and his betrothed Lady Ivy of Azrella!”

“I’ll probably never get used to that.”

The couple moves deeper into the audience hall in preparation for the ceremony. Conversation is light for the most part. The ceremony is complete and we go forth to congratulate Validar. “May you rule with wisdom and compassion,” Ivy offers.

The couple will dance a little bit, much like they did back in Ansimont at that Inn when they first realized their attraction. Ivy feels a bit more comfortable as the evening progresses and enjoys the meal. She’ll remain at Sir Acerion’s side and will only depart when he does.
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

Another Step

Post by Yusef »

Yusef:

At some quieter point in the feast, Yusef will approach Chareos. "Sir Chareos? May I have a moment?"

If Chareos agrees, Yusef will continue. "The Lady Sallavarian told me today that you are seeking to get rid of a sling that you no longer need. I have recently taken up that particular weapon, and would be interested in obtaining a reliable one. Has it served you well, Sir Chareos?"

---

Arriving at the ceremony the next afternoon, Yusef still feels awkward in the strange clothes. Mercifully, the ceremony is relatively brief. Yusef applauds with the others when Validar is crowned, though he doesn't really know the man well himself.

Music starts up and Yusef sees that some of the guests begin dancing. He has no experience of it himself, though it looks like fun. In some ways, it seems to bear a resemblance to some of the martial forms that he has studied. Looking over at Sherra, he tries to guage whether she has any interest in trying it.

The food laid out appears to outdo even the previous night's feast. However, Yusef ate more than he should that night, so will be even more moderate in his eating this night.

Lyonessa:

“The pleasure is ours, Lady Lyonessa,” the Duke answers with a smile.

“We have heard tales of your songs and ballads,” the Duchess adds. “Would you be kind enough to play at this evening’s feast?”

"Oh, I would be honored to play for such an audience," Lyonessa says almost embarassingly. "I will definitely plan to entertain this evening."

Serena will seek out the company of her fellow Mystran Lyonessa. “Would you mind company during your morning devotions? I know there are some followers who prefer to show their faith in private and those who enjoy the company of others. I thought I would find out which you prefer.”

"Oh sure Serena, that would be fine," Lyonessa says. "I don't have any preferences, especially of late. All this adventuring I find myself praying alone as often as not."

Lyonessa runs her hands over her dress for the umpteenth time, nervous for some reason. She found a flattering blue one with white lace, very grateful for those that helped her with the task. She is announced, realizing that she is by herself. So many of her companions have paired up, and her thoughts once more drift to Laucian so far away. She wonders if she will ever see him again, but she holds out hope.

Eventually Validar is announced and Lyonessa notes how regal he looks in the uniform and cloak. This is a wonderful moment for him and Lyonessa makes sure she catches every detail so that she can properly recall the tale in the future.

Once that is over, the local musicians begin to play and those who are so inclined can dance. The doors to the feast hall are opened where food is waiting. The festivities last long into the night.

Lyonessa finds it strange for once to not be the one entertaining. She listens to the musicians for a while, taking note of what they play and picking up any local tunes she may not know. She nods approvingly and smiles at many of the pieces chosen.

She will get some food later in the evening, marvelling at the fare. She will eat lightly, but sample many of the items. She forgets any of her earlier nervousness and enjoys the celebration.

Chareos

“Well, who am I to argue with someone as intelligent as you?” Argent answers with a grin and a hug.
Chareos grins in return as well as returns the hug. Within a few moments Argent begins to fidget with his clothes. After a time she is satisfied and asks if he is ready to go.

“As ready as I will ever be.”
“Presenting Lady Argent and Lord Chareos!”

“You know, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of that,” Argent whispers to Chareos.
“It does have a nice ring to it,” he whispers back playfully.

Chareos will move about those within the audience, talking to those who seem interested to do so. Though not the social butterfly that Argent is he will try and keep pace with her.

Soon enough the fanfare is over and the new Baron is presented to those assembled.

When applicable Chareos will make his way to the new Baron bowing slightly in respect. “I have no doubt you will lead your people into a golden age.”

A dance follows and Argent is keen on trying it.

A look of dread flashes across his features as he realizes the dance begins to play. He looks to Argent. “Would you care to dance? Though I must warn you I am not very skilled in such things.”
Chareos notes that he doesn’t know how to dance. “Neither do I,” Argent adds, “but you learn by doing.”
“Then let us begin.” Chareos will do his best not to step on Argent’s toes as well as ignoring when Argent steps on his own.
“I wonder who that woman is with Sir Corley? She’s very beautiful. It seems our knight has been holding back on us.”
“I know not who she is,” he says as he looks upon her. “She is beautiful; they seem to make a handsome couple,” he adds as he observes them dancing. As the dance ends Chareos will clap or whatever is the custom to the closure of a dance, then excuse himself from Argent for a moment claiming he is parched.
Taking up a glass and drinking from it, Yusef comes near, "Sir Chareos? May I have a moment?"
“Sir? I am no knight, my friend. Aye, it would be good to rest my feet for a time. This dancing is for those who are more skilled.”

If Chareos agrees, Yusef will continue. "The Lady Sallavarian told me today that you are seeking to get rid of a sling that you no longer need. I have recently taken up that particular weapon, and would be interested in obtaining a reliable one. Has it served you well, Sir Chareos?"
“The sling is a decent weapon of minor magics. The weapons I carry supersede its use. If you wish it, tis yours, Yusef. It has served me well though I cannot think of many times I have used it.”

Chareos will eat heartly though not as full as Sir Acerion or Sir Corley. He will converse with any of those near to him. Chareos will leave when Argent does so.

Sir Acerion:

“The idea of wearing a fancy dress just does not sit will with me. Maybe someday it will, but right now I’m not ready for such things. I’ve been poor when it comes to money almost all of my life, so such things seem an unneeded luxury to me. Thank you for being so understanding.”

"Then I apologize for the unintentional embarassment I caused you earlier," Acerion says humbly. "I believe you would indeed look quite beautiful in a fancy dress, but I understand better now. Forgive me for my selfishness in that matter."

That’s a bit of an exaggeration there. She was cordial—polite—to everyone at the brunch. She just hasn’t said much while there and has the look of not really wanting to be there. The above sounds like she’s sitting there with a scowl on her face like a child refusing to eat their veggies!

((OOC: Sorry, I might have placed my responses a bit out of order. Acerion's reaction was built up more for the way she insisted on being armed at the brunch and how her reaction was going to be to any who questioned her about it. I knew she was acting friendly and polite, but it was obvious she wasn't enjoying any of it, combined with Acerion's efforts to get her "dressed up". Now back to our regularly scheduled post...))

“It is my hope to see this accomplished too,” Ivy unexpectedly adds. “I never had a real family or a place to call home. Both of you did, but then lost them. Family is very important to me and would want you both to regain what you’ve lost.”

Acerion is a bit surprised but pleased that Ivy speaks up, adding her desire to see this through. He knows a little better where she is coming from and knows she is very uncertain about things having happened so drastically and quickly. The last bit of his brooding vanishes as the brunch continues.

Acerion spots her and waves back. He will still allow the pegasus ample time to fly and be free of the confides of a stable. Ivy meets him when he does land.

"It definitely was," Acerion replies. "Too often we miss simple pleasures for all that goes on around us demanding our attention."

Growing a bit more serious, he adds, "I am still learning too. I fear I may have distanced us a bit in just believing that you would slip so easily into a role you were not familiar with in any way. Even though I find myself out of place at times with formal affairs, I still have a glimmer of knowledge and past experience to draw upon."

"While I do wish to have lands of my own, and a family as well, there is much more that needs to be done before that day will ever arrive," Acerion says. "It is my hope that with this time you will be able to ease into a new lifestyle rather than being thrust into it like we have the last few days."

Acerion inquires who the new arrivals are upon seeing the pair of ladies about. Once he learns one of them is indeed a potential he was interested in speaking with, he approaches them.

"Greetings to both of you," Acerion says upon approaching. "I am Sir Acerion Kalindor, paladin of Heironeous."

Once he learns which of the ladies is which, he will speak to Jocasta directly, "Wonderful, I am glad you have arrived. I am eager to speak with you."

If she's receptive, Acerion will excuse himself from Sara and walk with Jocasta, asking more about her and what prompted her to ride here directly.

"With any luck on my part, you won't be hearing 'betrothed' often enough to get used to it," Acerion says smiling, hoping she catches his joke, knowing full well she was more refering to her title.

The couple moves deeper into the audience hall in preparation for the ceremony. Conversation is light for the most part. The ceremony is complete and we go forth to congratulate Validar. “May you rule with wisdom and compassion,” Ivy offers.

"Indeed may your realm know only peace so that you may grow bored and curse my name for wishing it so," Acerion says lightly in contrast to the earlier seriousness of the planning and strategizing. "It is a grand day for you and yours," he adds sincerely.

The couple will dance a little bit, much like they did back in Ansimont at that Inn when they first realized their attraction. Ivy feels a bit more comfortable as the evening progresses and enjoys the meal. She’ll remain at Sir Acerion’s side and will only depart when he does.

"Now this, I must say," Acerion says in a whisper as he leans in closer to Ivy as they dance, "I pray you never grow tired of, my lady."

Acerion remembers brunch and is eager to see if Corley dines as heavily as he did that morning. He will eat well himself, but but does not overdo it. Growing too content on these rich meals will only make it miserable when he must once again eat what is available while on the road.

“Such is often the case for those who wander doing the Lady's work,” Serena agrees. “I have known those who prefer quiet prayer and those who wish to sing hymns to show their faith. The Lady does not seem to have a preference on how her followers pay tribute, so I find it somewhat necessary to learn how a fellow Mystran chooses to pay homage. I would be pleased to join you in morning prayers.”

Serena attends the ceremonies as a courtesy for receiving the invitation. She finds the ceremony very surprising, as there are no magical displays of any kind. Magic, so common in Alphatia, is totally absent here.

Serena is content to observe and dresses in her Priestess Robes for the occasion. She’ll eat lightly and has no interest in dancing should any ask. She’ll slip out of the ceremony after eating and is content to walk the castle grounds before turning in for the evening.

“There’s no need to apologize, or to think of yourself as selfish, Acerion.” Ivy says, holding him close. “Such thoughts are normal for you and the world that you grew up in. They were really not even a thought in mine. We come from very different places and sometime conflict will arise from that. The recent events might be commonplace for you, but they are very alien to me. It will take time for both of us to really understand each other. After all we both are servants of our chosen gods. We also have a relationship with each other and those things that come with your rank. Serving three masters is never easy.”

I didn’t think any of the others who knew Ivy would have an issue with her carrying her mace around. She’s protective of it to be sure. It probably didn’t help that she died back in Corunglain either, so having lost it once figures into it. At least she doesn’t talk to it, lovingly stroke it, or call it her ‘precious’! ))

“It is difficult for me,” Ivy does admit. “I mean, there are times where I think how many families could all this food feed? How much of it is just wasted while others go hungry? I’ve never really strove to improve my place in life, but rather make things better for others. I cannot see me changing in that regard. I will take in orphans and give them a warm bed and food. I will help those in need. Small update for Lyonessa:

After attending the ceremony for a time, a handsome half-elf wearing the uniform of the Pyrisian Military will step up to Lyonessa.

“Forgive the intrusion, milady,” he states gallantly. “But I cannot recall seeing you at court before and there is something wrong about a woman with your obvious charms belong alone at such a gala. Permit me to introduce myself I am Squire Verlin Moonshadow. To whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?”

GM Notes:

There is an introduction to Elcadan file with a crude city map now available in the private area. Other files will follow covering parts of the city in more detail.

getting through it..

Sherra:
Yusef casts an uneasy look toward the clothes provided by the attendants. "Style is not something I have much sense of or was taught while young. Still, I will try, though maybe a visit to Argent is in order. She seems very inclined to fashionable clothes."

He spends some time digging through what is available, tossing out anything frilly or splashy. In the end, he ends up with a respectable pair of plain blue slacks, a white shirt and a patterned vest in black, blue, yellow and white.

"Uhm... how do I look?" he asks, still feeling slightly ridiculous. At least the colors are appropriate to his patron...
"Well, what I meant by style was something you would be more comfortable in rather than worrying about what may or may not be appropriate," Sherra tries to explain. She hates this getting all dressed up too. If it wasn't because it was Validar...

Seeing what he finally chooses, Sherra replies, "It's very colorful. Definitely much more uplifting than my black is, but I'm not about to change that much, Validar or not."
Arriving at the ceremony the next afternoon, Yusef still feels awkward in the strange clothes. Mercifully, the ceremony is relatively brief. Yusef applauds with the others when Validar is crowned, though he doesn't really know the man well himself.
Sherra leans in to Yusef while Validar is making his entrance, noting that Yusef is still seemingly a bit awkward, and whispers, "Don't worry, we'll have you out of those clothes soon enough."

If Yusef looks at her, Sherra keeps her face completely neutral.

Sherra also applauds when the ceremony reaches its end, but doesn't walk over to Validar seeing just how many people begin to crowd around him. He's becoming closer to everything he had hoped to achieve, which is something she will never want. Sherra lets him be with those who will be more important to him in the future.
Sherra will be receptive if Yusef wishes to ask her to dance. Hopefully he doesn't try anything too fancy with her in heels. If she was barefoot, that would be a different story...

She will also make sure to look over the huge feast, sure to find something she hasn't tried before. She will sample a few dishes but not eat too heavily.

Baron Validar -

Lady Rachel:
Validar furrows his brow and frowns. "We'll be sure to keep you on a short leash, sister," he says; only partially joking.

“You’re always so over-protective,” Rachel bemoans.

"Hopefully you shall not learn the reason for it on this journey, my sister," Validar answers in response and tossels her hair like he did when she was a young girl. She always hated that.

Meeting with the Duke:
“There is one more decision I made during your absence,” the Duke states. “Named the Duchy of Elcadan, it would surely rankle many a loyal Pyrisian, therefore I’ve decided to rename the greater realm as a symbol of our new unity. Since the Streel River is the main water artery and the Streel Plain where most of our food comes from, the new realm shall be known as the Duchy of Streel.”

Validar listens, only a bit concerned at first. As the Duke compleets his statement, Validar has a quick but wide grin upon his face. It will disappear after but a moment. "A fine choice, Your Grace. I agree that the people of Pyris deserve to not be under the control of Elcadan. We have fought so long to avoid it and to give in even under these circumstances would leave a foul taste in many mouths including my own."

"Long may you reign, Duke Relon of the Streel Duchy!" After a few moments of chit-chat, the two leaders both find themselves with many tasks to complete and Validar says his goodbyes.

"I look forward to our ride together where we will have more time to spend."

"Ah, I think I understand. Admittedly, I feel a little foolish dressed up like this, but it is tolerable." Fortunately, Sherra seems satisfied - if not particularly delighted - by his selection. "I chose these colors because they are symbolic with regard to my patron, Celestian. The deep blue and black represent the night sky, and the yellow and white denote the sun and stars. In this way, I'm trying to blend something appropriate for Validar's event with something that is important to me." One might also say that the black goes well with Sherra's hair and outfit, but Yusef doesn't think of it.
Sherra wrote:Sherra leans in to Yusef while Validar is making his entrance, noting that Yusef is still seemingly a bit awkward, and whispers, "Don't worry, we'll have you out of those clothes soon enough."
A look of confusion crosses Yusef's face momentarily, but he seems to simply accept her statement at face value and doesn't respond otherwise.

After watching the dancing for a little while, Yusef looks over at Sherra. "Are you familiar with these dances? I have seen dancing at my father's estate, but slaves were never invited to participate. It doesn't look particularly difficult, though."

Baron Validar -

Lady Gabriella Allonica:
"Indeed.

"You are correct, my love. I expected to be the militarial force for the Barony and be more independent in my actions. However, being the Baron now has many responsibilities, but also gives me even more freedom to do what I think is best."

"I am not worried about Pyris as it is a calm and stable land. But I do not wish to be away from her for too long, as you suggest. While my rule is very young, I must not allow it to be neglected."

"Indeed.

"I am certain without a doubt that you will be the most lovely woman at the ceremony. I look forward to seeing your stunning appearance, my love."

"Would that we had the time to devote to enjoying this day and the events to come. Unfortunately, with so little time and so many duties, we seem to be heading from one task to another. Still I relish the opportunity to hold you hand in mine and walk alongside you if only for a time." Validar takes Gabriella's hand and the pair head to the meeting.

Baron Validar -

The Stone Ridge Brunch Meeting:
The meeting begins well enough. Everyone helps themselves to the food presented and they then settle into the discussion.

"Indeed it is, my friend.

"Aye, Sir Corley. It is a most welcome challenge."

Sir Corley and Sir Acerion renew their vows to see Stone Ridge liberated.

Lady Ardel is mildly surprised by the gesture made by Sir Corley, but then again, he does tend to make these dramatic displays. It’s all part of his charm. Looking into Sir Corley’s eyes, Lady Vera will say, “I believe you with all my heart, Sir Corley.”

Validar smiles briefly. "Very good. We are all still in agreement to this task."

“Your vows mean a great deal to me,” Lady Ardel says gratefully. “I just pray that there is enough of our home to make it worth this effort, Sir Acerion.”

“My only real concern is the lack of intelligence that we have regarding the Stone Ridge area. Do any plans to the city still exist? The key to any battle strategy is to know the conditions of the battlefield. Here we do not.”

"One of our most important tasks will be to reconoiter the area. The Seekers will be employed for this task once they have completed their current mission. They will be able to get a situational condition of the barony and the city as well. That will help us to prepare for the attacks to come."

"As for plans to the city, we may be able to find out if such remains from Duke Corun, if we have the opportunity to return there to Corunglain. Otherwise, perhaps such is within the map room of Fort Fletcher or Fort Runnels. They should be provided with such maps, if they have not been lost or destroyed."

"A vital task will also be recovering the rest of the Guardian Shield.

"That assumes that we, or someone, is able to retrieve the rest of the Guardian Shield. At the moment, I am not planning for the campaign to be that simple. If the opportunity presents itself, then we shall make the proper adjustments to the plans. Surely, this is a campaign that shall have many contingency plans."

This is more of an informal gathering and not a negotiation, so Lady Gabriella is more content to observe. She can’t help put notice that Lady Ivy seems very uncomfortable.

“The poor girl is probably overwhelmed by all of this.”

Gabriella whispers to Validar as he waits for a comment from Ivy. He rolls that thought about in his head for a moment and then moves on. Now is not the time to deal with the situation, whatever the problem may be.

"Perhaps you did not catch my full meaning. Surely we can settle the military aspect of this campaign. I feel completely confident in my abilities as well as those of my fellow knights and the rest of our companions. Further, the clerical orders that we have represented here and others are likely to be able to handle some of the social issues with the people who remain in Stone Ridge or who have become refugees in other lands."

"However, there are economic concerns as well as ruling concerns that must be prepared for by you and your staff. Ardelphia and the surrounding villages and towns will not be able to suddenly 'return to normal' without a formal plan of action. Granted we must learn more about the situation, but it is not too soon to be ready for what is to come for Stone Ridge's rebirth. The are treaties to prepare, economic decisions to make and I am sure much reconstruction."

"And as for which task, yours or Duke Relon's, will be easier, I would not hasten to make a guess. I do not say this to frighten you or dissuade you, Lady Ardel, but rather to help you with the monumental task. I would not also take the remaining nobles actions at face value without proper consideration and care. You forget that with so few nobles remaining in Stone Ridge that removal of a few select individuals by nefarious means could catapult almost anyone into the line of succession for the throne of Stone Ridge."

“It is my hope to see this accomplished too,” Ivy unexpectedly adds. “I never had a real family or a place to call home. Both of you did, but then lost them. Family is very important to me and I would want you both to regain what you’ve lost.”

Validar is surprised to hear Ivy finally speak up. She had the look of not wanting to be here. "I am glad to have your assistance in this matter as well, Ivy of Azrella."

“Half the Guardian Shield has been recovered, but the other half remains missing. The Shields of Azrella and Mystra remain missing.”

"That will be a series of tasks we will soon turn our attention to. There is some thought that one of the shields is possibly close to recovery. I am sure that when we are able to turn our resources to this task, we can acquire more information about the missing artifacts."

"I am counting on it. There will be need for reconstruction as well as other business opportunities. We should see a large exodus of people from the slums of Elcadan to other areas. Stone Ridge will have much need soon. And as for Akorros, you anticipate my next moves well. We do indeed have our sights set on recovering all that was lost of the Western Kingdom, even as much as old Elcadan." Validar lets that thought ruminate in everyone's mind for a moment. Old Elcadan is a place overrun by demons. With Stone Ridge firmly on the road to recovery, the lands around Akorros should be a natural step."

Eventually, the comments come to an end and everyone leaves having satisfied their curiousity as well as their hunger.

"I want to thank each of you for attending this preliminary meeting and for offering your opinions. It will be important to continue with such discussions as time permits, although everyone may not be able to be in attendance." Validar nods in the direction of Lady Ardel one last time. "This process can finally be considered as having officially begun, milady."

"I look forward to seeing each of you again this evening," Validar says as he rises from his chair. "For now, I have other duties I must attend to."

“Well, I think this went rather well,” Lady Gabriella notes as the brunch nears it end. “It helped clear the air and put everyone concerned on the same page. I thank you all for coming.”

"Indeed. There are many tasks to complete, but we should have everyone thinking about them now." Validar offers his hand to Gabriella as she rises from her seat. "I have some meetings with staff members and their training now. I will see you again very soon." As they walk to the door, Validar gives his lady a quick kiss and then steps into the corridor. Dellant is at his side and the two are off once more.

Baron Validar -

After the meeting regarding Stone Ridge, Validar needs to take time to meet with the people who are leaving with the Duke for Elcadan and their subordinates who will be taking over here. It is a lot of details that need to be addressed and it is several hours before the issues are all resolved.

Also, Validar meets with Flynn Jordana, son of Sir Belfor and accepts him as a squire.

Eventually, Validar manages to get himself back to his chambers and complete a few plans for the Ceremony of Transference. He changes quickly and prepares for the beginning of the ceremony, reading reports while he waits. Unfortunately, Lady Gabriella is not going to be at his side in this event, as they are not as yet married. She does stop by briefly to offer her support and she is positively stunning, as usual.

It is now late in the afternoon and even though Validar is informed by Dellant that the ceremony has begun, it is a long wait as the guests are each introduced. Validar stands by regally as the process takes its customary and traditional time. He takes a few moments to gaze out into the courtyard and can hear the throng of people gathered there, even before he sees them. The castle courtyard is teeming with individuals and Validar is proud that the citizens of Pyris have turned out in such force for this event. It is an affirmation of all Validar has done to this day.

Dressed in his white military uniform and sporting a fur-lined cloak in dark green, Validar finally hears the words that they are ready for him. Dellant and Po go forward first. Dellant carries the standard with Validar's personal coat of arms upon it as well as Validar's sword, the Warblade and Po carries a personal standard for Validar. This will be the standard for Validar's army and similar to his coat of arms, it sports a black griffon, but is on a field of dark green. The two attendants, dressed predominantly in green, step forward and approach Duke Relon. They then step to each side and stand at attention.

The Duke's herald announces Sir Validar and Validar steps into the room. It is quite crowded and a light applause goes up. Validar catches the eye of his mother and father and then looks to his beloved before steeling himself to his duty and walking purposefully to the Duke. Once there, he places his fist over his heart, arm across his chest and bows slightly, the traditional honor salute here in Pyris.

Duke Relon stands; the Duchess and his sister behind him, both looking beautiful and regal. Validar keeps his eye on the Duke however, the seriousness of the ceremony not lost on the young man.

"Pyris is a young land and has been an independent one. She was forged from valor and courage and might and her people are a testament to her strength. I have a love for Pyris that will never diminish," the Duke states. "But circumstances and duty deprive me of the opportunity of a long life as Baron of Pyris. It is now time for a new baron. One as young and strong and independent as the land. One who loves the land as much as I have. One who will help her grow and revel in the glory that can be attained."

"Pyris has had but three barons in her short existance. Today, we coronate the fourth. He was named for his great-grandfather, the original Baron of Pyris. On this day, he will have attained that same position as the prime caretaker and leader of his people."

Duke Relon takes the coronet for the barony in his hands and regards it for a moment. When he turns back to Validar, Validar kneels on one knee before him. "Let it be known this day, that with the King's blessing and my own, that the Barony of Pyris is now ruled by Validar VanArkus, fourth Baron of Pyris!" The Duke places the emerald-emblazoned coronet on Validar's head. After a moment, Validar stands. Taking the Warblade from Dellant, the Duke salutes the new baron with the sword and hands it to him.

Validar stoically takes the blade from his father, salutes him back then turns to the assembled crowd. He salutes them as well, completing the ceremony that was initiated several generations ago by his namesake.

The Duke's herald sounds the trumpet and booms out," May I now present to those assembled and to all the citizens of the Barony of Pyris: The Right Honorable the Lord Pyris Baron Validar VanArkus, Knight of the Realm!"

Applause breaks out in the room and a loud cheer erupts outside in the courtyard as the assembled people hear the news of the new baron. Sheathing his sword, Validar cannot help but have a smile of pride and satisfaction as he is congratulated by his parents and sister. Gabriella is by his side a moment later and the pair exchange a hug and a quick kiss.

The congratulations begin as the guests file by, a process that takes over an hour to complete.

“Congratulations, Baron Validar,” Lady Vera states. “May your reign be long and fruitful.”

"Thank you. I look forward to being on the opposite end of such a ceremony in Stone Ridge one day very soon."

Sir Corley has attended the festivities with Lady Ardel and is right behind her in the congratulatory queue. “Well done, my friend,” Sir Corley adds, heartily shaking the new Baron’ s hand.

"My heart-felt thanks, friend Corley. I am pleased that you could share such a momentous day with me. You honor me with your presence."

The rest of his friends cycle past, mixed in with other lords and ladies of the domain. “Well done, Baron Validar,” Lady Argent states. “You’re inheriting a fine realm.”

"Most kind, Lady Argent. I am indeed most proud of this land."

When applicable Chareos will make his way to the new Baron bowing slightly in respect. “I have no doubt you will lead your people into a golden age.”

"With friends such as you, Lord Chareos, there is indeed no doubt in that. Thank you."

The ceremony is complete and we go forth to congratulate Validar. “May you rule with wisdom and compassion,” Ivy offers.

"A fine set of traits, priestess. I vow to do my best to represent Pyris with distinction and to be loved by all her citizens. Thank you for your words."

"Indeed may your realm know only peace so that you may grow bored and curse my name for wishing it so," Acerion says lightly in contrast to the earlier seriousness of the planning and strategizing. "It is a grand day for you and yours," he adds sincerely.

Validar cannot help to let out a hearty chuckle at Sir Acerion's words. "While Lady Gabriella would likely second such a wish, I fear that while it is appreciated, it is not practical. I hope Pyris will continue to know peace, yet I fear the Kingdom as a whole does not have that luxury and as such I am honor-bound to place myself in her vanguard. Boredom is likely the least of my curses," he says with a wide grin. "But the sentiments are well appreciated. Thank you for attending the festivities."

Eventually, the procession ends and the herald sounds his trumpet once more, asking all those assembled to attend to the Feast Hall for the grand meal. Validar will place his arm about Gabriella's shoulders and the two wait until the rest have left before heading to the Feast Hall. There they are seated at the head of the table, at the places of honor.

The food is sumptuous, the music is light and cheerful and the mood is quite happy throughout. Validar will dance the first dance with his beloved, but then undergoes a series of dances with his mother, sister and many of the ladies of the court and the realm. Eventually Gabriella interrupts and takes him by the hand back to the tables for a chance to eat. As darkness has fallen, a serious of Pyrotechnics lights up the sky for all to see. The crowd outside cheers again at the site (not a complete absence of magic, have to entertain the crowd a little).

Finally the festivities begin to wind down. Validar and Gabriella will excuse themselves before it all comes to a total conclusion and they retire to a nearby balcony, to gaze out at the night sky. Several groups of people are still celebrating in the castle courtyard and numerous fires burn. Validar looks out over his land, at least as much as he can see in the dark night, contentedly.

"What are you thinking, my love?" Lady Gabriella asks, as she continues to snuggle against him, both for companionship and to ward out the night chill. Validar takes his cloak and wraps it about her as well, as he continues to hold her in his arms.

"I was just thinking that I seem to have now all that I have ever desired. I have been knighted by a new King. I have become the Baron of my homeland. And I have the love of the most wonderful woman in all the lands. I truly have been blessed in this life." He lifts Gabriella's chin gently to look into her eyes once more and nearly loses himself in them. After a long moment, he kisses her and then pulls her tight once more. "A perfect ending to a near perfect day," he says quietly.

Baron Validar -

Validar awakens early, despite the late hours of the previous day. He is none the worse for wear considering the full schedule he has had the last days.

Attendants of the castle have already prepared his equipment for the coming march. He is about to head for breakfast when he is informed about the arrival of Sara Ebonov. He thought that word indicated that she had arrived looking to become a squire. Sir Corley had already accepted two of the local lords as squires and apparently Sir Acerion was satisfied with Lady Ebonov's journey-mate, Jocasta Demendria.

Validar will have Lady Ebonov summoned to his private study despite the early hour. When she arrives, he will be gracious but somewhat short. "I understand you have taken it upon yourself to journey here to Pyris. You're looking for one of the new Knights of Cynalon to apprentice yourself to as a squire?"

"That is correct, Sir Validar," Sara answers. "Lady Demendria and I decided that it was better to seek you and the other knights out, rather than wait to be summoned. Lady Demendria has been accepted as a squire of Sir Acerion Kalindor."

"I am aware of the situation," Validar responds. "Do you not think it presumptuous to attempt to circumvent the formal process?" he then asks.

Sara hesitates for only a moment. "No, sir. It is our desire to learn from new knights and ones on the Lords Council, no less. Lady Demendria and I have trained long and hard and we wish to make a difference in Cynalon. We wish to help see the kingdom to a new age."

"Sir Corley has accepted two squires and Sir Acerion has agreed to train your companion. Alas, I have already accepted a squire as well, the son of Sir Belfor, a local knight of Pyris. It is possible that you wasted your time in coming here."

If Sara is disappointed by this statement, then she does not show it. "I would ride beside you as well and learn what I can to one day become a knight of the realm. You would not be wasting your time in adding me to your entourage. I have heard tales of your exploits. I know you were trained by Sir Alon and are master with the longsword. I will not disappoint you."

Validar stands and walks about the room for a moment. "You are from the Inner Kingdom. My actions and campaigns are focused on Western Cynalon and the Outer Realm. What interest do your lands have in our affairs?"

"It is not a matter of politics, Baron Validar. I am a lady of Cynalon. I wish to see all parts of the Kingdom made better, not only those more closely tied to the old King. I will be a knight one day," she says emphatically.

Validar stops and considers the young lady for a moment. "How old are you, Lady Ebonov?"

"I am eighteen years of age, my lord."

"And who have you trained under so far?"

"I have drilled with my family's guards since I was old enough to be able to lift a spear. When I was fourteen, I stayed at Castle Wildmere in the Barony of Penhaligon and trained with Sir Culmont for two years. I have had other teachers briefly in the years since then. I believe I am ready to ride with you."

"Are you now?" Validar asks, stepping closer. "My companions and I have battled demons and slain dragons. I have seen much death on the field of battle. Are you ready for such adventures?"

Sara bites her lip briefly, but the fire in her eyes is fierce. "I am not afraid," she says defiantly.

A smile forms on Validar lips for a fleeting moment. "Very well, Lady Sara Ebonov. We ride in only a few short hours with Duke Relon on his trip to Elcadan. Have your gear and your horses ready to go, if you wish to learn from me. If you are as strong as you appear, you may indeed make it to knight one day."

"Now if you will excuse me, I have much business here before we depart."

Sara stands with a flourish and heads out the door quickly. "Thank you, Baron VanArkus. I will not fail you!"

Validar sighs for a moment. He is not sure he is ready for another task just yet, but the extra bodies will help with the various tasks and it is almost as easy to train two as one. The kingdom needs as many new knights as it can acquire. He will do his best to teach them all he can.

Validar heads out and awaits the Duke, finalizing his preparations and escorting Lady Allonica down to the carriages waiting for their departure.

Post Continued:

The Guardians stay in Pyris is nearing its end. There was a great feast welcoming them back to Pyris on the evening of their return. The main attraction of the next day is the Ceremony of Transference, where Validar will officially become the next Baron of Pyris. All the guests are introduced by their full titles by the heralds. After that, the main ceremony occurs where Duke Relon places the barony coronet on Validar’s head, proclaiming him the new Baron of Pyris. A formal dance and dinner follows, lasting late into the evening.

Earlier in the day, Sir Acerion met a part of potential squires who took it upon themselves to make the journey to Pyris unannounced. Sir Acerion speaks for a time with Lady Jocasta Demendria and upon the conclusion of this dialogue accepts her services as his squire. Lady Sara Ebonov takes the same position with Baron Validar.

Towards Elcadan:

The Guardians last day in Pyris is a whirlwind of activity as the final preparations for the Duke’s journey to Elcadan begins. Early in the morning Jallarzi teleports the Seekers directly to her estate, located just north of Elcadan. From there the adventurers will enter into Elcadan itself covertly to meet up with various city factions. Lady Sallavarian then returns to join the procession.

Most of the Guardians are already mounted and waiting for the ride to begin. The Duke’s Carriage is pulled up to the front of the castle and the riders step in. Lady Salavarian and Lady Allonica accompany Duchess Lysandra in the carriage.

There are two full units of cavalry accompanying the group and others. Validar’s younger sister, the Lady Rachel is already on horseback wearing her plate armor. A locally Pyrisian knight, Sir Belfor rides right behind the Duke’s Carriage. The Duke himself is on horseback and also wears armor. His personal herald and guards ride close to him.

The new squires are here and ready to ride near their masters. Riding close to Sir Corley is Squire Pravis and Squire Verlin. Squire Jocasta will ride close to Sir Acerion, and Squire Sara and Squire Flynn close to Baron Validar.

Last second goodbyes are said at the castle entrance. Lady Gwendolyn exchanges a few last minute words with Baron Validar. The Lady Gwendolyn will oversee things here in Pyris in the Baron’s absence.

At last the procession is ready to go. Some of the cavalry move ahead to lead the procession. The carriage is roughly in the middle with the rest of the riders spread out amongst the procession. Those guards staying behind line the riding path, their swords drawn in honor of the departing Duke and his family. Trailing behind are a series of wagons holding supplies for the journey.

The procession exits the castle courtyard and rides into Pyris itself. The city streets are lined with the citizens saying their goodbyes to the departing rulers and warmly greeting the new one. The city gate is reached and the procession passes through, traveling the High Road to the west. Even the outside of the gates is lined with well-wishers leading the travelers towards their destination.

Once out of the city, the procession picks up speed as it winds its way through the hills and forests to the west of Pyris City. Early that afternoon, you come to Woodcrest, a village at the base of the hills and roughly halfway between Pyris City and Timberline. Lunch is served here, while the Duke and Baron meet with the local ruler.

Continuing on, the procession travels another twenty miles and comes to Timberline just as night is beginning to fall. Timberline is the second largest city in Pyris, but is still many times smaller than Pyris City. The population is around 1200. They city is ruled by Lord Miral and Lady Durova. An honor guard escorts the procession along the way, starting a few miles outside the city and all the way to Lord Miral’s small castle. The Lord and his Lady holds a dinner for the new Duke, the Baron, his family, and honored guests.

There are rooms for some people, but not enough for everyone present. Lady Sallavarian takes care of this by conjuring Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion. (Jallarzi did the same back in New Frontiers #34. See the first post in that file for a description of the magical mansion.)

GM Notes:

You’ve traveled from Pyris to Timberline on the first day. The plan for tomorrow is to ride to Wrasseldown, with Ansimont being reached the following day. The Guardians visited Ansimont in New Frontiers #21. Wrasseldown, while much smaller than Ansimont, is somewhat similar. Both are primarily farming towns.

Those invited to Lord’s Miral’s dinner include the Duke and Duchess, Baron Validar, Lady Rachel, Lady Gabriella, Lady Sallavarian, Sir Belfor, Sir Corley, and Sir Acerion. Each may have one guest join them.

Also, Squires fall into the same category as Familiars and Henchmen. It’s up to their owner/master to post their actions. I may post something for them in the main post as circumstances dictate, but otherwise they are all yours.

Lady Gabriella:
Baron Validar wrote:"You are correct, my love. I expected to be the military force for the Barony and be more independent in my actions. However, being the Baron now has many responsibilities, but also gives me even more freedom to do what I think is best."

"I am not worried about Pyris as it is a calm and stable land. But I do not wish to be away from her for too long, as you suggest. While my rule is very young, I must not allow it to be neglected."
“No, it cannot be neglected. That is the lesson that Elcadan teaches us. The Duke there grew weary of the demands of his position and allowed others to rule in his place. Eventually he became so out of the public eye that no one even knew he had been replaced. The people need to know that their ruler is there and actively working to better his realm.”

The next few days are a blur of activity with Lady Gabriella changing attire as needed. The Ceremony of Transference is held and Lady Gabriella is among the first to congratulate the new Baron. They share the first dance and sit together at the dinner. Some private time is spent that evening, but not much as the next day promises to be just as demanding.

Lady Gabriella is woken early and quickly dresses for the trip. A morning meal is had before joining Duchess Lysandra and Lady Sallavarian in the carriage. The ride from the castle and through the streets of Pyris is most memorable, as crowds have gathered to wish the Duke and Duchess well on their journey.

“The people of Pyris are true and loyal,” Duchess Lysandra says. “I am sure that they will love you just as much when you become Baroness, Gabriella.”

“You’re most kind, Your Grace. Your place will not be an easy one to step into. I can only hope that I am worthy of the task.”

The ride is pleasant enough and we reach Woodcrest early in the afternoon. Lunch is held and it’s good to stretch our legs. Then its back on the road once more and Timberline is reached before nightfall. An honor guard of riders meets the procession and we’re escorted into town and to the castle of the local ruler. Lord Miral is introduced.

“A pleasure to meet you, milord,” Lady Gabriella says in greeting. A dinner is to be held that evening and she’ll attend with Baron Validar.

Lady Ardel:
Baron Validar wrote:"Perhaps you did not catch my full meaning.

"And as for which task will be easier, I would not hasten to make a guess. I do not say this to frighten you or dissuade you, Lady Ardel, but rather to help you with the monumental task. I would not also take the remaining nobles actins at face value without proper consideration and care. You forget that with so few nobles remaining in Stone Ridge that removal of a few select individuals by nefarious means could catapult almost anyone into the line of succession for the throne of Stone Ridge."
“I—“, Lady Ardel stammers for a moment in surprise. “I have not considered such things before. “It appears that I have much yet to learn.”
Baron Validar wrote:"I want to thank each of you for attending this preliminary meeting and for offering your opinions. It will be important to continue with such discussions as time permits, although everyone may not be able to be in attendance." Validar nods in the direction of Lady Ardel one last time. "This process can finally be considered as having officially begun, milady."
“I thank all of you for your assistance in this matter. I don’t know what I would do without you.”

The rest of the afternoon passes quickly. Lady Ardel ponders some of the things that Baron Validar mentioned, but finds much of it just makes her head hurt. So instead, she concentrates of preparing for the ceremony and prepares for the evening to come. All too soon, Sir Corley stops to escort her to the ceremony.
Baron Validar wrote:"Thank you. I look forward to being on the opposite end of such a ceremony in Stone Ridge one day very soon."
“I can only hope that I am as well received when the day comes as you are here.”
Sir Corley wrote:The evening is a most pleasant one, but the demands of ones station are fully felt come the morning.

"Alas, I must depart for the time being, my fair lady, although I wish it not. I must gather my gear and join the procession of Duke Relon. From there I shall be leading our comrades into the battle against the vile Deville family. I do not know when I will be graced with your presence once more, but you will never be far from my thoughts and my heart, milady."

The day's journey promises to be a long one.
“Be well, Sir Corley,” Lady Ardel whispers as her knight departs. “Return to me safely.”

Later she’ll rise and dress and wish the others well when they depart on their ride to Elcadan.

Sir Corley:
Baron Validar wrote:"One of our most important tasks will be to reconnoiter the area. The Seekers will be employed for this task once they have completed their current mission. They will be able to get a situational condition of the barony and the city as well. That will help us to prepare for the attacks to come."
“Do you speak of the group as a whole, or rather the rangers among them? This seems a case where those who are more stealthy are best suited rather than a larger group.”
Baron Validar wrote:"As for plans to the city, we may be able to find out if such remains from Duke Corun, if we have the opportunity to return there. Otherwise, perhaps such is within the map room of Fort Fletcher or Fort Runnels. They should be provided with such if they have not been lost or destroyed."
“I don’t recall seeing such in the map room at Fort Fletcher while we were there. In fact, I did make a search when I had the opportunity.”
Baron Validar wrote:"My heart-felt thanks, friend Corley. I am pleased that you could share such a momentous day with me. You honor me with your presence."
“I am honored to be here.”
Acerion remembers brunch and is eager to see if Corley dines as heavily as he did that morning. He will eat well himself, but does not overdo it. Growing too content on these rich meals will only make it miserable when he must once again eat what is available while on the road.
No, he does not eat as heavily at the formal dinner as he did earlier. What he does eat would not be considered abnormal.

“Be well, Sir Corley,” Lady Ardel whispers as her knight departs. “Return to me safely.”
“On that, my dear lady, you can rest assured.”

Sir Corley returns to his room before having to rise for his morning duties. A quick meal is consumed and his squires assist him into his armor. The group then makes their way to the stables to prepare their mounts. Destrier is made ready, but Sir Corley will ride his second mount for the trip, sparing the warhorse the extra work for now. Once ready, Sir Corley and his squires ride to join the main procession. During the preparations, Sir Corley will instruct the Squires on horsemanship and the caring of mounts.

He’ll tap Lady Rachel on the shoulder as he rides up to her. “So, you’re finally coming along with us, milady. This does promise to be a memorable trip then.”

“Someone has to watch out for you guys,” the Lady Rachel counters, bringing a hearty laugh from Sir Corley.

At last we are ready to move out. Sir Corley settles in about halfway between the front and the carriage and keeps pace with the group. The ride through town is extraordinary, as the citizens have come out to cheer their passage. Sir Corley will wave as they ride along. Once out of town, speed is increased to a steady gallop.

We stop at Woodcrest for lunch and to visit the local lord. Then it’s on to Timberline, the second largest city in Pyris. An honor guard intercepts the group and we are led to the castle of the ruling lord. A dinner is planned for the nobles and Sir Corley is invited. He’s allowed a guest, but ultimate cannot decide whom to choose. So instead, he’ll join Lady Rachel and the pair can enter together. However, Sir Corley does not flirt with the young lady like he had in the past. His heart belongs to another now.

Argent:

“Then let us begin.” Chareos will do his best not to step on Argent’s toes as well as ignoring when Argent steps on his own.
Fortunately Argent is dexterous enough to pick up the dance steps and avoid being stomped on, although she lacks the skill of someone trained at this sort of thing.

The evening is pleasant and Argent is weary by the time she returns to her room at the inn. Sleep comes easily.

While in Pyris, Argent took the opportunity to change and clean her dresses for the trip to come. So she’ll have new fancy clothes to wear when the time is right. The thought of wearing something a bit more practical during long rides does cross her mind. Horses and dresses are not a good combination.

So next morning, Argent dresses in her new riding clothes. She has black riding slacks and a matching blouse. She wears her Boots of Warmth, so the cold does not bother her. Over this she wears her Cloak of Displacement. The Tiara of Absorption is worn and she has her Staff of Power close at hand.

The ride through the streets of Pyris is interesting. The love these people show for their rules is clear. Although not directed at her, Argent finds herself liking the feeling. This has to be largest group she ever rode with before. Argent will chat with those close to her as they ride through the countryside.

A small village is passed through and we reach another town before nightfall. The local lord invites the rulers and the knights to a private dinner, but the rest of us are left out.

“It seems that we are left to our own devices,” Argent notes. Jallarzi creates her magical mansion, so we’ll have comforting surroundings for the evening.

Argent is content to chat to the others in the mansion before turning in for the night.

Yusef:

As their time in Pyris wends to a close, Yusef finds another opportunity to practice with his new sling. Otherwise, he spends as much of his time with Sherra as she will permit.

When the time comes to depart, Yusef finds that a horse and tack has been provided for him. There is quite an assemblage of people, mounts and wagons for the trip. In truth, it's somewhat confusing as Yusef has never been involved in any undertaking of anywhere near this magnitude.

Not being nobles, there doesn't appear to be any particular place in the procession set aside for them. As a result, Yusef suggests to Sherra that they ride near Lady Sallavarian's carriage. There is a huge crowd in the streets as they depart, bidding the rulers and their entourage goodbye.

The land they travel through is beautiful and unspoiled. Yusef thanks Celestian for being granted this wondrous experience.

Arriving in the village of Woodcrest, Yusef helps himself to some of the provided food. He also spends some time stretching to keep his muscles limber. The long ride isn't in the best interest of his body, so he works to minimize the effect as best he can.

Another ride brings them to the town of Timberline. It appears to be a very nice place; big enough to have available most of the things a person might need and yet small enough to avoid the congestion and tendency to squalor of a large city. Yusef could see himself settling down in a place like this when he becomes to old to spend all his time travelling.

Having never experienced anything quite like Jallarzi's enchanted dwelling, Yusef is amazed as he enters. In some ways, it reminds him of his father's home in Elcadan, but without the vulgar excess. He will find someplace to put his few things before joining the others for dinner.

Yusef shakes his head ruefully. "Sorry; all of these titles and formalities are confusing to me."
“No harm done, my friend. It is new to me as well.” He says with a smirk.
"It's enchanted?" Yusef asks, surprised. "Lady Sallavarian said nothing about that. It is quite generous of you to be willing to let me have it. I don't have much, but I would like to repay you in some way if I may."
“Aye it is, though only minorly. There is no need for repayment, Yusef. I will have it for you come morning; I trust it will serve you well.”

Chareos attempts the dance steps. At first his steps are a bit clumsy but in the passing minutes he slowly gets the hang of it. Thankfully he doesn’t step upon Argent’s toes.

As the night comes to an end Chareos escorts Argent to her chambers. “Thank you for a pleasant evening,” he says with a smile then heads off to bed.

Putting on his travel gear, Chareos straps his frostbrand to his hip and quarterstaff across his back and heads to the horses. Getting there a few moments before Argent, he places a locket of silver engraved with a rose about the pommel, and leads the horse to her. He holds the reins for her as she mounts up. “I trust you slept well,” he says with a smile, awaiting to see her face when she sees the locket.

Chareos will move throughout the procession as he can though he is never far from Argent for long.

“It seems that we are left to our own devices,” Argent notes. Jallarzi creates her magical mansion, so we’ll have comforting surroundings for the evening.

Argent is content to chat to the others in the mansion before turning in for the night.
Chareos notes the tone in which it is spoken as if she was left out wanting to be in the spotlight. “Who wishes to be in such grandeur all the time,” he says evenly. “The simple things are important if not more than status and wealth can give.”

Lyonessa:

“Forgive the intrusion, milady,” he states gallantly. “But I cannot recall seeing you at court before and there is something wrong about a woman with your obvious charms belong alone at such a gala. Permit me to introduce myself I am Squire Verlin Moonshadow. To whom do I have the pleasure of meeting?”

"No intrusion at all," Lyonessa replies, smiling at the handsome half-elf. "I am Lyonessa, a songstress of Mystra."

Lyonessa marvels at the size of the procession. It is not something she has ever been a part of. She will do her best to stay near some of her friends since everyone is split up quite a bit. She will smile at all the citizens outside standing about or waving. Pyris seems very pleasant and its people happy.

During the ride Lyonessa will sing. She doubts her voice will reach all ears, but at least for those around her she will try to make the ride more pleasant. She will be glad for the break at Woodcrest, and enjoy lunch with everyone. It will also allow her to rest her voice so that she can sing a little during the afternoon as well.

Timberline is next, and the nobility and a few guests are called for a special dinner. Lyonessa will eat with the others and talk lightly of the day's travel and sights. She will retire in the conjured Mansion when the hour gets late after allowing Dusk to do some hunting. She will also have him scout the area around Timberline just to make sure nothing suspicious is going on.

Leaving Pyris:

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar -

The preparations to leave Pyris are somewhat interrupted by the interview with Lady Sara Ebonov. Validar eventually accepts her under his tutelage and she is ready to ride out in short order with the rest of them.

Many of the group are ready for the morning meal, although some seem to be catching up on their sleep or looking for other means to break their fast this morning. Validar will accompany Gabriella to the breakfast, but will only be there briefly and eat sparingly. There is much to make ready still.

The Seekers are sent to Jallarzi's estate by her and ready to travel into Elcadan proper to conduct their reconnaisance. Validar will see them off. "We will meet again on the road between Elcadan and Ansimont. You have several days to explore the city and learn what you can. This mission should be a smooth one indeed. You have all your tasks. We will see you all soon, my friends."

Validar will have his attendants and horses ready by the time the procession is prepared to leave. The cavalry units are in column formation and the carriages and mounts are prepared in the castle courtyard.

Validar will escort Lady Gabriella to the carriage, where she joins Jallarzi and the Duchess. Sir Belfor is already in position near the carriage. "I will be near, beloved, but the first day's travels should be quite uneventful. Things may change when we arrive in Elcadan territory. I will see you again when we stop at Woodcrest." Validar will assist Gabriella into the carriage as well as the other ladies.

He then mounts up, Squire Flynn in charge of his extra horses: Havok and another riding mount. Delant is also nearby, as is Po. Signalling his attendants that he will be back in a moment, Validar rides to where the rest of the Guardians have gathered. "The procession should be safe on its own for the first day, so each of you are free to ride where you will. I do not expect any treachery while in Pyrisian territory."

It is some time for everyone to be ready, mounted and off and soon with the sounds of trumpets and the beat of a series of drums, the Duke and the rest are off to Elcadan.

Baron Validar -

Lady Gabriella Allonica:
"I am not worried about Pyris as it is a calm and stable land. But I do not wish to be away from her for too long, as you suggest. While my rule is very young, I must not allow it to be neglected."

“No, it cannot be neglected. That is the lesson that Elcadan teaches us. The Duke there grew weary of the demands of his position and allowed others to rule in his place. Eventually he became so out of the public eye that no one even knew he had been replaced. The people need to know that their ruler is there and actively working to better his realm.”

"Pyris and Elcadan are very different situations fortunately. My father was a very good leader of his people and they love him and would fight and die for him. While I must too earn that respect, the people are great citizens of Cynalon. I am very proud of Pyris."

Lady Vera Ardel:

"Forgive my candor, Lady Ardel, but this process will not be a walk in the park, as it were. There are many nobles of the nner Kingdoms who have turned a blind eye to your plight who will arrive once the barony is reclaimed and will seek to 'assist" you in your needs. Some of them will not to be trusted. Some will be hostile, but in a calculated and careful manner."

"And there may be some who seek to discredit or disavow your claim. You should be prepared to handle such accusations. Getting Stone Ridge up and running will not be all roses and cake, I am afraid. It is part of the reason why I suggested the alliance that I did. For while Corunglain may need Stone Ridge, she is not likely to be much direct help in the beginning."

“I thank all of you for your assistance in this matter. I don’t know what I would do without you.”

"We will do what we can, milady. Much of the task will also rest on your own shoulders. The time to start becoming a baroness is fast approaching and will be here before Ardelphia is secured again."

----------------------------------------------
"Thank you. I look forward to being on the opposite end of such a ceremony in Stone Ridge one day very soon."

“I can only hope that I am as well received when the day comes as you are here.”

"I am certain that you will be, Lady Ardel."

Lord Corley:
"One of our most important tasks will be to reconnoiter the area.

"I had considered the group as a whole. They are almost all elves, besides Bernice and Blod. And they number but 5 at the moment. It is something that I had not considered tactically, but only strategically at this point. But a fine uestio to consider, nonetheless."

"As for plans to the city, we may be able to find out if such remains from Duke Corun, if we have the opportunity to return there.

"That is unfortunate. Perhaps Fort Runnels may have what we need, or we can find such in Lord Cavius possession. If not, we may have to do more reconnaissance than originally planned."
