Elfquest #16

Water Medallions:

The group led by Sherwood has run into trouble with their quest to find the three water-related medallions. The Narwhale told the adventurers that the Water Spirit stole his medallion. The Hydra was found to have been slain and its medallion gone. The Water Spirit said that the Narwhale stole his medallion first. The explorers have agreed to honor the Water Spirits request that they arrange a meeting with the Narwhale.

And so Sherwood flew the barge back to the small isle where you first encountered the Narwhale. But the great fish is nowhere in sight. The explorers take turns on watch, waiting for the Narwhale to return.


Griffon Medallion:

The other group of elves have begun their action against the enemy fort where they suspect the Griffon Medallion is being held. Kylie has gone in first under the cover of magic, waiting for the others to cause a diversion to lure the fire giant out of his lair. While waiting, Kylie spies the fire giant below and a huge hanging sack that seems to hold his belongings.

While she waits for the others to ready their distraction, Kylie tries to determine whether the bag will fit out the hole in the roof. She also tries to guess at its weight, wondering if she is likely to be able to lift it.

A rope as thick as Kyle’s wrist supports the sack. Kylie could easily fit into the sack and have room to spare! As it is now, it is too wide to fit through the opening on the roof.


On the other side of the fort, the rest of the elves have made their way inside. Lilia eliminated a guard and then tossed down a rope allowing Laucian and Nariya to climb up. Laucian casts Stalk on Nariya. She produces her spear and closes in on the orc in the far guard tower. Laucian trails a short distance behind her ready to fire an arrow at the other orc walking up the fortifications.

Nariya moves along virtually invisibly and silent to any onlooker. She reaches the orc in the guard tower and he has no idea that she is even there! She drives her spear into him, ending the orcs life.

At nearly the same time, Laucian takes aim at the other orc and fires. His arrow lodges into the orcs throat and he goes down. The orc lies unmoving on the walkway. The death of both of the orcs seems to have gone unnoticed by those down below. Nariya and Laucian both reach the far guard tower.

Back at the first tower, Lilia sees the orcs go down. The Elf Maiden locates a hole in the roof of the Wyvern stable closest to her. She casts Fireball through the opening and the inside of the stable explodes in flames! The flames quickly spread and the wyverns rush to escape the fire.

The deed cannot help but be noticed by those in the camp. Several orcs rush to the stable doors and throws them open. The fire giant stirs from his sleep, aided by the barking of the hellhounds. He rises and goes to investigate, leaving the door to his quarters wide open. There is general confusion in the camp, but no one is moving to climb up to the battlements where Lilia, Nariya, and Laucian are located.

Now what?

[Kylie]

Kylie:

Kylie hears Lilia's conflagration before she sees it. Lifting her head, the flames are visible even from her position lying atop the giant's quarters. It takes a few moments, but - predictably - he rises to investigate. Kylie begins to float through the gap in the side of the smokestack as she verifies the reaction of the hellhounds.

The hellhounds did follow, but as noted in the text he left the door to his quarter’s wide open, so any passerby can see inside.

[Sherwood]

Sherwood:

“Who will take first watch?” Lia asks her uncle.

“I’ll take the first watch,” Sherwood answers. “Talen can follow me, then you, and finally Valena. If the narwhale does show, wake the rest of us up.”

[Lilia]

Lilia:

The rope is thrown down and Laucian and Nariya climb up to the guard tower.

Upon reaching the tower walls, Laucian squats down, “Nicely done.”

“It was just an orc,” Lilia answers, still disguised as an orc. “Nothing of any great challenge.”

“Lilia, Regardless if we can remove the guards quietly or not, Fireball the stable in a few moments time.”

“As you wish, clansman.”

While the others move to eliminate more of the enemy, Lilia eyes the roof of the wyvern stable closest to her, trying to find an opening large enough for a Fireball to pass through. One is eventually spotted. Looking up again, Lilia can see that the other two orcs have been eliminated. The Fireball is cast and part of the stable goes up in flames. Lilia moves back in order to avoid being caught in the fire. She’ll move up to see what is going on in the courtyard better, trusting her disguise to make her unnoticed.

[Kylie]

Kylie:

Seeing the hellhounds have departed with their master, Kylie proceeds into the large, bare room. It's a good thing she's invisible, as the door was left wide open. Staying near the ceiling, Kylie glides over to the large bag and begins checking it for traps or anything that might keep her from opening it.

Once she's certain it's safe, Kylie begins to look through the items in the bag in hopes of finding the medallion they came for.

If it looks like Kylie will have to do something to open the bag that would cancel her Invisibility, she'll move over and partially close the door as quietly as she can first.

[Lia]

Lia
Hearing that her and her comrades have to keep watch, Lia will make ready to do so. While she waits she will absently sharpen her sword and throw little bits of ice/stone into the water before her, All the while praying to her patron that the Narwhale will return swiftly.

[Laucian]

Laucian

At nearly the same time, Laucian takes aim at the other orc and fires. His arrow lodges into the orcs throat and he goes down. The orc lies unmoving on the walkway. The death of both of the orcs seems to have gone unnoticed by those down below. Nariya and Laucian both reach the far guard tower.

Bringing his longbow to bare Laucian takes aim just as Nariya impales an orc upon her spear. Within a wink of an eye the arrow lodges into the orcs, throat dropping the orc without a sound as blood seeps from the wound. Making his way into the guard house, Laucian can see the walkways are visible to the interior, cursing softly Laucian stays far enough away from the lip of the guard house so he can see out but his features are still hidden, Whispering to Nariya, “Stay hidden but Be prepared to move.” Knocking another arrow to his bow Laucian waits for a few moments to see if the guard towers are called upon to see what they may.

If the Giant looks to the tower where they are and asks of what they see. He will reply in orc, “Nothing I see!”

Griffon Medallion:

The diversion seems to have worked. The fire giant has been roused and he has gone to investigate the commotion. His companion hellhounds trot after him.

Lilia moves closer to keep a better eye on what is going on down in the courtyard. The elf maiden has used a Polyself spell to take the form of an orc and she trusts this to keep her from being noticed.

On the other side of the fort, the spell that concealed Nariya was broken when she attacked the orc guard with her spear. Both see and Laucian have only their elfin cloaks to conceal them. Both move closer to see what is going on, but not too close.

Kylie uses the diversion to slip into the giant’s quarters and floats closer to the huge sack. There doesn’t appear to be any traps on it. However, the sacks own weight keeps the top of it closed as it dangles from the thick rope. The sack is heavier then Kylie can lift!


Out in the courtyard, the fire giant issues orders as he moves closer to the burning stable. They wyverns are panicking and they rush out through the stable doors the orcs opened a few moments ago. A few of the beasts seem to smell the air as if they picked up a strange scent.

The fire giant fearlessly moves into the stable and tries to put the fire out with a tarp. The flames have no effect on the giant as he tries to bring the fire under control.


GM Notes:

Using a dagger to slice an opening into the side of the giant’s sack would not cancel Kylie’s invisibility.

Now what?

[Laucian]

As they come to the courtyard a few of their number raise their heads into the air as if catching a scent. Laucian’s eyes widen as he realizes what may have just happened. Turning to Nariya, “We have to go now.” He says commonly and evenly. “They may have got our scents!” he says a little louder but not much.

If there is any Lau will secure it and repel down the outside wall. If no rope is in site, Laucian will attempt to head back to Lilia’s guard tower and retreat.

[Nariya]

Nariya:

On the other side of the fort, the spell that concealed Nariya was broken when she attacked the orc guard with her spear. Both see and Laucian have only their elfin cloaks to conceal them. Both move closer to see what is going on, but not too close.

Whispering to Nariya, “Stay hidden but Be prepared to move.” Knocking another arrow to his bow Laucian waits for a few moments to see if the guard towers are called upon to see what they may.

Nariya will crouch down and exchange her spear for her bow. If they have to fight further, she doesn't want them getting that close.

Peering out over the courtyard, a Fire giant comes into view issuing orders to those about him. He soon enters the building as if it isn’t a concern as wyrvens frantically make their way out. As they come to the courtyard a few of their number raise their heads into the air as if catching a scent. Laucian’s eyes widen as he realizes what may have just happened. Turning to Nariya, “We have to go now.” He says commonly and evenly. “They may have got our scents!” he says a little louder but not much.

"Then lets move," Nariya whispers back. She stays low as she and Laucian prepare to leave, keeping her bow at the ready in case any of those wyverns head over.

[Kylie]

Kylie:

Attempting to lift one of the straps to get a feel for it's weight, Kylie emits a soft grunt. Obviously, it's far too heavy for her to lift!

She floats back a little, evaluating her options. Slipping her best knife from its sheathe, she moves closer, positioning herself on the far side of the bag from the door. This allows her to peek past the bag to see out and will hide any cuts from view of those outside. Once in position, she makes a clean vertical slit in the bag near the top, being careful to not let anything fall out.

Kylie glances out the door to make sure no one is coming, then begins to carefully explore the contents of the bag.

Post Continued:

Griffon Medallion:

The Fire Giant has been drawn out of his quarters by the fire in the wyvern stable. The wyverns have been let out and some are singed, but none were killed in the Fireball. A few sniff the air as if picking up a new scent, but their orc tenders try to rush them away from the fire instead.

Seeing this, Laucian has he and Nariya move back. A quick search turns up no rope in the tower, so the pair quickly makes their way back to the first tower and the rope they climbed up earlier. Thus far their movements seem to have gone unnoticed.

Lilia is not at the tower, as she also moved closer to get a better view while disguised as an orc. She continues to watch and maintains her position.


Elsewhere, Kylie is examining the giants’ sack. It is too heavy for the half-elf to lift and even larger than she is! Moving behind the bag, so that no one from the outside can see, Kylie draws her dagger and slowly makes a cut in the side of the sack. The material gives way with some effort and some of the contents of the sack are exposed. At the top of the sack is various giant-sized clothing.

Digging a little deeper, Kylie’s eyes light up when she sees that there is an entire chest inside the sack! The chest is normal sized, about 3’ wide, 2’ deep, and 2’ high! Moving items away from around the chest, Kylie can see that it has a pad lock on it. But even worse, the chest is lying on its side inside the sack! The chest is too large to fit through the opening of the roof vent above.


Now what?

[Kylie]

Kylie:

It takes but a moment to spot the large chest buried amidst all the other stuff in the huge bag. Kylie spends some time shifting the contents of the bag about so that the chest is exposed. This goes well enough, but it is soon discovered that the chest is on it's side and closed with a padlock. She's not particularly worried about the padlock, but having the chest on its side could allow the medallion - if inside - to fall down into the depths of the bag where it would be more troublesome to get.

First, the padlock. Kylie spends several moments checking the lock for any sort of trap. If it appears untrapped, she will attempt to unlock it. If not, she'll try to disarm the trap first.

[Nariya]

Nariya:

Seeing this, Laucian has he and Nariya move back. A quick search turns up no rope in the tower, so the pair quickly makes their way back to the first tower and the rope they climbed up earlier. Thus far their movements seem to have gone unnoticed.

Nariya looks around but stays low when they reach the first tower. The fire still seems to have all their attention. She doesn't see any sign of Lilia, but she was in the guise of an orc. She looks to Laucian to see if he wants to leave or stay put in case they need to provide cover fire.

[Laucian]

Laucian

Seeing this, Laucian has he and Nariya move back. A quick search turns up no rope in the tower, so the pair quickly makes their way back to the first tower and the rope they climbed up earlier. Thus far their movements seem to have gone unnoticed.

Nariya looks around but stays low when they reach the first tower. The fire still seems to have all their attention. She doesn't see any sign of Lilia, but she was in the guise of an orc. She looks to Laucian to see if he wants to leave or stay put in case they need to provide cover fire.

Laucian will knock an arrow and hold to his position. There is still one in which may need a way out.

“We will stay put for the moment, I see no sign of Kylie. We may have to give her more time.” Shaking his head slightly and saying softly a prayer to Ehlonna to see them through this.

Laucian will stay where he is and wait. If attention is drawn to him or any of his comrades He will wait and see what transpires. If the giant begins to move forward back to his barracks Laucian will aim an Ice arrow at/into him.

Post Continued:

Griffon Medallion:

Oblivious to what is going on outside, Kylie searches the giant’s sack. A full chest is found inside the sack, but its locked and lying on its side. Kylie examines the lock closely, looking for anything suspicious like her mentor Rat taught her. Nothing is noticed.

Producing her ‘tools of acquisition’, Kylie goes to work on the lock. Reaching in with the picks, Kylie tries to open the lock. On the second try she hears a click and the lock pops open!

However, the chest remains on its side inside the sack. She’ll have to pry open the top to get to the inside contents of the chest and there is the danger of spillage with items falling either deeper inside the sack or out on to the floor below.


Elsewhere, Laucian and Nariya have retreated back to the first guard tower. From this position, they can see what appears to be an orc further along the walkway towards the main courtyard of the fort. This orc is keeping a keen eye on what is going on down in the courtyard, leading the pair to believe that it is Lilia in disguise.


From Lilia’s point of view, she can just see the doors to the giants’ quarters. She notes the doors quietly closing, but cannot see anyone actually doing the deed. From her vantage point, Lilia could not see much of the inside of the giant’s quarters anyway.

The elves continue their vigil while Kylie ponders her next move with the chest.


Now what?

[Kylie]

Kylie:

Finding no traps on the lock, Kylie attacks the lock with her tools. The lock proves to be somewhat tricky, but eventually her efforts are rewarded with a satisfying click. She takes another peak toward the door to make sure that no one is coming.

Now that the chest is unlocked, Kylie has to find some way to open it without losing any of the contents. Thus, she begins working on turning the chest. If possible, she'll turn it so that the top is up. If that doesn't seem possible, she'll try to turn it so that the hinged side is down in an effort to limit spillage.

[Laucian]

Laucian will hold his position though he will look around the tower for a moment to see if The guard that was there had any arrows. If they do He will pick one up and knock it to his bow. If the Giant begins to walk back he will put the orcish arrow into the giant or at least try to.

Water Medallions:

It is late in evening and Lia has taken her turn at watch. She passes the time by sharpening her sword and tossing stones into the water. Finally, the sound of water moving does reach her ears. Taking a look around, Lia spots the Narwhale just off shore! The great fish is seemingly looking at her.


Griffon Medallion:

In the enemy camp, Kylie is busy exploring the Giant’s Sack in search of the medallion. Inside the sack she found a chest and has successfully picked the lock. The problem is that the chest is lying sideways inside the sack and is surrounded by other items, mostly giant sized clothing. The chest is too heavy for to move and even worse she has almost no leverage while hovering. While trying to rearrange the clothing inside so that the chest can lean backwards, Kyle gasps in horror as the chest falls towards her a few inches! The hinge side is now up. Opening the chest will cause the contents to spill out into the sack or the floor below!


Now what?

[Lilia]

Lilia:


Lilia watches the activity down in the camp. She can’t see inside the giants’ rooms very well, but she did see the doors close seemingly on their own.

“Kylie must have done that,” Lilia surmises.

Glancing back, Lilia notes that Laucian and Nariya have returned to this side of the fort. Laucian has his bow at the ready.

“At ease, clansman,” Lilia says as she cautiously walks back towards the pair. “The diversion seems to be working. Perhaps you and Nariya should withdraw before we are discovered? I’ll go see how Kylie is fairing and we’ll meet you back at the griffons.”

Assuming that this is agreeable, Lilia will changer her shapes once more back into an owl. She’ll then fly around the outside of the fort towards where Kylie was supposed to be. Discovering the smoke vent, Lilia lands before it and peaks inside. She sees a giant sack with a tear in it and its movement tells Lilia that Kylie is there and still invisible.

“Kylie? How are you coming?” Lilia whispers in owl form. “Have you found the medallion?”

[Lia]

Lia

Sitting upon the island Lia sits beside the waterline takes out her sword and quietly sharpens her sword in her hand. As she does so she looks about from time to time. “Patience.” She says to herself as she looks bout into the quiet surrounding for the narwhale to no avail. Pleased with her swords sharpness she tests the blade with her finger feeling the stinginess of the blade, she places it back within her scabbard.

Picking up a few rocks in her hand she slowly skips them across the water as she did when she was little. Soon enough rustling of water reaches her ears causing the half elf to look about in search of the origin. There within the wakes of water the Narwhale as appeared and looking right at her.

Dropping the rocks to the ground Lia quickly apologizes, “I am sorry if I disturbed you.”

Sitting down so she can look the whale in the eye better Lia begins to explain what transpired at the water spirit dominion.

“We did as you wish and went to see the Water spirit. Upon our arrival we saw a man with dark armor, much like those here being dragged within the water, never to return. We spoke to the Nymph soon after which he greeted us kindly, as we spoke of our purpose, You honorable Narwhale was mentioned, and that you were friends.”

“The Water spirit said that you had stolen the medallion from him.” She said evenly. “Though, he believed this Until we spoke of the Hydra and its demise. He mentioned the Hydra and trailed off his words unclear. The Water spirit wishes to meet with you to discuss what transpired, it was said that you would know of the location.”

“I am afraid to say that perhaps you both were fooled to weaken your friendship and suspect one another. When we saw the Hydra’s remains there were foot steps and a staff mark leading away. I think the Hydra may have but you both ill at ease.”

[Kylie]

Kylie:

Despite her best efforts in the awkward circumstances, the chest flops over in the opposite direction of what she intended. Words she learned from the denizens of Dog Alley long years ago storm past her lips.

Before she can begin trying to wrestle the chest into a better position, she hears a familiar voice from behind her.

"Not well. There's a huge chest in here that I suspect has the medallion. I got the lock open, but it's sitting facing down and I'm having trouble turning it so that I can open it without everything falling out!" Kylie's tone bears the stain of her frustration. "Any suggestions?"

Unless Lilia has a better idea, Kylie will return to trying to flop the chest over into some other position. Pretty much anything would be better than the configuration it's in now.

[Lilia]

Lilia:

Lilia listens to Kylie’s predicament…

"Not well. There's a huge chest in here that I suspect has the medallion. I got the lock open, but it's sitting facing down and I'm having trouble turning it so that I can open it without everything falling out!" Kylie's tone bears the stain of her frustration. "Any suggestions?"

“Maybe I can give you a hand,” Lilia suggests. “The doors are closed are they not?”

Assuming that they are, Lilia will change shapes once more, this time into a snake. She’ll slither in underneath the vent to reach the supports below and upon reaching the sack will slide down the rope supporting it.

“Maybe I can get inside the sack and help you move the chest,” Lilia offers as she slides into the sack. The Elf Maiden will try to get underneath the chest and push it up, so that Kylie can get it to sit properly in sack.

If that should fail, Lilia will suggest, “Let it fall out and hit the floor. There’s a great deal of commotion going on out in the camp as it is, so the noise may not be noticed. Even if it is, you should be able to grab the medallion quickly enough so that we can escape unnoticed.”

[Kylie]

Kylie:

“Maybe I can give you a hand,” Lilia suggests. “The doors are closed are they not?”

"Mostly, but not all the way," Kylie replies. "I didn't want to risk attracting too much attention." She watches as Lilia turns into a snake and slithers down the support to the sack.

“Maybe I can get inside the sack and help you move the chest,” Lilia offers as she slides into the sack. The Elf Maiden will try to get underneath the chest and push it up, so that Kylie can get it to sit properly in sack.

"Sounds like a good plan," Kylie responds as she holds the slit open for Lilia to glide through. Hopefully, the two of them can lever the chest into a better position.

If that should fail, Lilia will suggest, “Let it fall out and hit the floor. There’s a great deal of commotion going on out in the camp as it is, so the noise may not be noticed. Even if it is, you should be able to grab the medallion quickly enough so that we can escape unnoticed.”

"I hope that won't prove necessary, but we'll do what we have to do."

[Laucian]

Laucian


As an orc begins to walk the ramparts toward him Laucian takes up his bow and begins to give tension to it aiming at the orc.

“At ease, clansman,” Lilia says as she cautiously walks back towards the pair. “The diversion seems to be working. Perhaps you and Nariya should withdraw before we are discovered? I’ll go see how Kylie is fairing and we’ll meet you back at the griffons.”

Realizing his error Laucian quickly slackens his bowstring and drops the orc arrow to the deck. “We have to work a sign for you when you polymorph.” He says shaking his head slightly. “We will do as you say, though do not linger for to long. We can come back if the need warrants it.”

Laucian will make his way back to the griffons and wait for the others to return.

Water Medallions:

The narwhale listens as Lia relates what has happened. Upon the completion of her story, the narwhale squeaks something in response. It's only then that Lia recalls that Valena was the only one able to comprehend what the narwhale was saying before! Before Lia can say anything else, the narwhale swims off and quickly disappears into the dark night.


Griffon Medallion:

Laucian and Nariya have gone back over the wall and are making their way back to the waiting griffons. Lilia changes back into an owl and flies to check up on Kylie. She finds Kylie struggling with a chest inside a giant-sized sack.

Taking the form of a snake, Lilia crawls down from the roof and slithers into the large sack. Once inside, she positions herself under the chest and begins to push it up while Kylie tries to control what direction the chest is going to go in.

This time it is much easier to move the chest! The chest is pushed back and with Lilia’s help it is slowly shifted so that it is sitting in the sack much like it would on the floor! (The lid is now facing up.)

The chest is opened and much to Kylie’s delight it is filled with treasure! There must be hundreds, if not thousands of silver coins inside the chest, with gold and platinum ones mixed in! A few gems can be seen, including a beautiful black opal. There’s no sign of the medallion, but there is a lot to sort through in the chest. Much could be hidden underneath all those coins.

Now what?

[Lia]

Lia

The narwhale listens as Lia relates what has happened. Upon the completion of her story, the narwhale squeaks something in response. It's only then that Lia recalls that Valena was the only one able to comprehend what the narwhale was saying before! Before Lia can say anything else, the narwhale swims off and quickly disappears into the dark night.

Hearing the squeaks in response Lia soon realizes her error, unfortunitely she does not realize it soon enough as the narwhale disappears into the the dark night.

Cursing herself stupid Lia runs and wakes Valena, And quickly explains what happens. Then wakes the others. She quickly apologizes for her error, Explaining that the Narwhale left before she could deter it to come back.

[Nariya]

Nariya:

“At ease, clansman,” Lilia says as she cautiously walks back towards the pair. “The diversion seems to be working. Perhaps you and Nariya should withdraw before we are discovered? I’ll go see how Kylie is fairing and we’ll meet you back at the griffons.”

Realizing his error Laucian quickly slackens his bowstring and drops the orc arrow to the deck. “We have to work a sign for you when you polymorph.” He says shaking his head slightly. “We will do as you say, though do not linger for to long. We can come back if the need warrants it.”

Nariya releases the tension of her bow. While she hadn't raised it and aimed at Lilia/orc, she had an arrow ready. Since it sounds like we will be pulling back, Nariya lowers herself to the ground while Laucian finishes up talking.

Meeting him at the griffons, she looks over at him, "Doesn't it seem like Kylie is taking a bit too long?"

[Kylie]

Kylie:

Working together, Lilia and Kylie are able to shift the chest so that it can be opened. Doing so, Kylie is disappointed to discover that there is no medallion lying conveniently on top. On the other hand, the wealth represented is considerable.

Unfortunately, time is very definitely an issue.

Kylie snatches the black opal and begins digging through the chest. The opal and any other gems she encounters disappear into her Girdle. Handfuls of coins are scooped out of the chest and dropped unceremoniously into the rest of the bag. With all of the shifting around, the medallion - if present - could be anywhere in the chest and the coins are siimply an impediment.

"Lilia!" Kylie whispers loudly. "It's open, but I don't see the medallion. Help me dig through all this stuff."

[Laucian]

Laucian
Meeting him at the griffons, she looks over at him, "Doesn't it seem like Kylie is taking a bit too long?"

Laucian will hold where he is and check his mounts saddle and equipment then do the same for the two riderless mounts. There is no telling if they will need a fast escape.

[Lilia]

Lilia:

It’s a struggle, but the chest is finally moved. Given by how heavy it is, it must hold many things!

"Lilia!" Kylie whispers loudly. "It's open, but I don't see the medallion. Help me dig through all this stuff."

Slithering up past the chest, Lia looks inside while still in snake form.

“There’s a small fortune here!”

Unfortunately snakes do not have hands, so a new form is required. After a moment’s thought, Lia changes forms into a brownie like Master Robin. Being only two feet high, Lilia can gain better access to the chest.

“I’ve got a couple of sacks with me, Kylie”, Lilia says as she produces them. “Perhaps we should help ourselves while we are at it?”

Lilia will begin to fish through the chest, tossing anything into her sack that is not silver coins. She’ll continue to search until the medallion is found and then immediately retreat back to the griffins.

Griffon Medallion:

The giant’s chest has finally been opened! Inside is a huge amount of coins and other valuables, but the medallion is not seen. Kylie begins to shift through the chest, pulling out gems as she comes across them. Lilia crawls up from underneath the chest while still in snake form. Peaking her head over the side of the chest, she sees the giants treasure. Changing forms to that of a brownie, Lilia starts to help sort out the treasure, tossing gold and platinum coins and the occasional gem into her sacks.

In addition to the black opal, Kylie finds 2 amethysts and 1 aquamarine gem in the chest. There are some obsidian and tiger-eye agates pieces, but both are of minimal value. (Only 10 gp on average.) A pair of scroll cases turns up during the search and is quickly added to the growing collection.

At last, Kylie spots something unusual looking! It’s a beautiful silver medallion with one side covered in elvish runes and the other shows a griffon in flight. You’ve found the Griffon Medallion!

But your celebration is short lived as you become aware of the hellhounds trotting back into the giant’s home. They start to bark and one even breathes fire!

Taking the medallion, Kylie flies upward and underneath the vent opening. Lilia changes back into an owl and flies after Kylie. Both fly direction towards where the griffons are waiting and arrive safely. Mounting the griffons, everyone flies off into the night. Behind you, the fort is a hive of activity, but there are no signs of pursuit just yet.


GM Notes:

Where are you going to fly to? The griffon nests on the side of the volcano or all the way back to the griffon stable? Or something else entirely?

Now what?

Kylie:

Finding so few gems of value, Kylie is tempted to start after the more valuable coins. However, time is short and the medallion far more important.

Plunging her hands deep into the chest, one of them closes on a larger coin-shaped object. Excitedly, Kylie pulls it out. One glance is sufficient to confirm that it's the medallion they sought. "Lilia! I got it!"

One glance is all she gets as their time runs out and the hellhounds return. Stuffing the medallion in one of the pouches of her Girdle, Kylie turns and flees.

It doesn't take long to reach the griffons, where they find Laucian and Nariya waiting. "We found the medallion, but we should get out of here before that fire giant comes to investigate."

Once they are underway, Kylie recommends that they return to the volcano area. They can begin investigating the warrior statue.

[Nariya]

Nariya:

"I more actually meant that hopefully nothing happened to her," Nariya explains.

She gets ready to leave seeing Laucian checking the saddles. They may have to leave quickly. Lilia and Kylie finally do return and it seems there is a definite need to go.

It doesn't take long to reach the griffons, where they find Laucian and Nariya waiting. "We found the medallion, but we should get out of here before that fire giant comes to investigate."

Once they are underway, Kylie recommends that they return to the volcano area. They can begin investigating the warrior statue.

"That's great news," Nariya says, hearing they were successful. She will agree with returning to the volcano area unless the others have a reason not to.

"I more actually meant that hopefully nothing happened to her," Nariya explains.

“If she needed us or was caught I am sure she would have cried for help or the likes.” He says evenly.

The search of the giant’s chest continues. Lilia puts gold and platinum coins into her sack. Her eyes grow wide upon seeing the two scroll cases and these are quickly added to the growing collection.

“There may be new magicks on these scrolls!”

Plunging her hands deep into the chest, one of them closes on a larger coin-shaped object. Excitedly, Kylie pulls it out. One glance is sufficient to confirm that it's the medallion they sought. "Lilia! I got it!"

Between Kylie’s discovery and the barking of the hellhounds getting louder, Lilia will say, “Then let us be off!”

Lilia ties the sack to her belt and then changes back into an owl. She flies up from the giant’s sack, out through the roof vent and back to the waiting griffons.

It doesn't take long to reach the griffons, where they find Laucian and Nariya waiting. "We found the medallion, but we should get out of here before that fire giant comes to investigate."

“Yes, they are bound to search once they discover our theft. Those hellhounds will probably pick up our scent and be here shortly!”

"That's great news," Nariya says, hearing they were successful. She will agree with returning to the volcano area unless the others have a reason not to.

"Well done." He says to the others, Kylie in particular. "I see no reason why we should not go to the warrior statue. Though, let us try to keep the griffons within the trees."

“I think we should examine the warrior statue right now, while it is still night out. The area is visible to the fort and if we try to do this in the daytime, we'll be spotted. Plus we have to figure that those wyvern patrols will be out in full force once day comes and there is very little cover on the volcano. My suggestion is to visit the statue now and then retreat into the forest come daylight for concealment. Then we just wait for Sherwood and the others to arrive.”

[Valena Feador]

Valena:

Cursing herself stupid Lia runs and wakes Valena, and quickly explains what happens. Then wakes the others. She quickly apologizes for her error, explaining that the Narwhale left before she could deter it to come back.

It was close to the time that Valena was suppose to take over for guard duty, so it doesn’t take much to wake up. Val doesn’t need much sleep either. So she’s quickly awake once Lia prods her.

“What’s going on?” Valena says with a yawn. She listens as Lia explains what happens that the narwhale was here and is already gone. “You were supposed to wake everyone up first, upon seeing the Narwhale.”

But the deed is done, so no reason to belabor the point.

“The narwhale understands elvish, so it knew what you were saying. I guess now we just have to wait for it to return.”

[Kylie]

Kylie:

In her excitement over getting the chest open and then finding the medallion, Kylie had overlooked the scrolls. Fortunately, Lilia noticed them and pulled them aside. "That would be wonderful. It will be fun to check them later."

“Well done.” He says to the others, Kylie in particular. “I see no reason why we should not go to the warrior statue. Though, let us try to keep the griffons within the trees.”

"Thanks," Kylie says, smiling and nodding to Laucian and Nariya. "Yes, we should probably be even more careful than we were on the way here, as the fort will be on alert."

“I think we should examine the warrior statue right now, while it is still night out. The area is visible to the fort and if we try to do this in the daytime, we'll be spotted. Plus we have to figure that those wyvern patrols will be out in full force once day comes and there is very little cover on the volcano. My suggestion is to visit the statue now and then retreat into the forest come daylight for concealment. Then we just wait for Sherwood and the others to arrive.”

"Good idea, Lilia," Kylie says. "If Sherwood's group hasn't arrived by morning, we might want to consider going and exploring that chimera-shaped stone. It should be far enough away to be reasonably safe."

[Nariya]

Nariya:

“If she needed us or was caught I am sure she would have cried for help or the likes.” He says evenly.

"Possibly, unless she was knocked unconscious, or magically silenced, or her throat cut or something," Nariya replies just as evenly. She quietly wonders just what has gotten into Laucian lately.

However none of those actually happened to Kylie and so we're away.

Lilia makes a great suggestion and everyone else seems to agree, so Nariya does as well. They've been away from Sherwood and the others for a while now and Nariya begins to wonder how much luck they may be having.

Just a note: Kylie is a founding / original member of the Guardians. Unless there is something in their past that isn't publically known, Laucian has known Kylie for as long as he's known Lilia.

"Possibly, unless she was knocked unconscious, or magically silenced, or her throat cut or something," Nariya replies just as evenly. She quietly wonders just what has gotten into Laucian lately.

Laucian does not say anything in reply merely cast his head down in thought. It is apparent that he hadn’t thought of such things.

“Let us linger here no longer. Once the tracks of the griffons are found and passing of us is known word will spread. I am afraid our presence will shortly be known.” Laucian will pass this on the fact the arrow protruding from the orc’s neck.


OOC: Laucian is mentioning that Kylie has not done any stealing from his own knowledge, so He is unsure if he has done such things before while with the Guardians or how long it takes or her skill in such things.

Lia

“What’s going on?” Valena says with a yawn. She listens as Lia explains what happens that the narwhale was here and is already gone. “You were supposed to wake everyone up first, upon seeing the Narwhale.”

“The whale showed up and I talked to it.” She said excitedly, “Then, it swam off and I woke you.”

A downcast look came over the young half elf, “ I know,I failed you and the others.” Turning on her heel Lia heads off the side to be alone with her thoughts, perhaps some way she can fix it.
