New Frontiers #88

The Guardians are winding down their stay at the Ice Palace…

Anja:
Ivy wrote:“Such a thing is not without precedence. There is another outcast from your faith named Kharyna who walked the same path as you did. She was accepted into the Mystran faith and now serves the Lady of Mysteries, as does Lyonessa. It is possible to serve another patron if you wish it.”
“Then that does give me some hope them. Kharyna was vilified greatly amongst us for what she done, but know I cannot blame her.”

Treasure Hunting:

Yusef changes into his ‘Darkform’ and goes to explore the sealed chambers while Sherra stands guard. Yusef remains in Darkform as he moves from room to room. He experimentally tries to pick up the arcane tomes, but cannot get a handhold on him. His current form does not allow him to interact with the real world in such a manner. He would have to return to his normal state to pick things up. The doors do not appear to have a locking mechanism to them. It’s clear that magic was used to seal them.

Sherra waits out in the hallway patiently. No new threats bother her.

Silvarn:
“I suppose this place you speak of is very cold?” Ivy asks warily. “Nonetheless, yes, I would put my mind at ease. I would like to accompany you on this journey.”
“It is a place of perpetual winter,” Silvarn states. “So you will need to dress warmly.”
Ivy is about to say more, when Anya speaks up for herself. “As you wish, Anja. I will still go along with you to see this pace if you wish it. And I am sure that we’ll welcome the day when you return to us.”

Having returned from their search of the castle, Yusef listens in on the discussion. "Indeed! I would very much like to see your homeland, Silvarn." He smiles happily over at Anja and Ivy.
“It is settled then. I’ll need to rest and memorize the necessary spells. We can depart in the morning.”

A little later on Chareos will approach Silvarn and Sir Corley when they are together, "Pardon me if I am intruding, but I was dwelling on this for a time. If this heart of winter is removed from this place, the palace still stands assuming once the altar is destroyed, The Cold maiden's followers may recover this palace. Though I am curious given our situation," looking to Silvarn with a wink, "You have help the Guardians many times in the past and I would hate to see such a fine structure go to waste. Would this palace server your purposes, Silvarn? If so, perhaps the king could turn a blind eye on this place for your benefit."
“No, you are not intruding,” Silvarn answers. “I assume that the once the Heart is removed, that the Ice Palace will be removed with it. That is typical for such magically created dwellings. Even if it does remain, then it will be necessary to destroy, for as you say the Cold One’s followers would still seek.”

“I appreciate the offer, but I have no need for a place like this. My family dwells very far from here, but I visit as often as I can. It is there I go for relaxation.”

GM Notes:

The nature of the magic items taken from the Ice Palace thus far have been revealed over the Cynalon Knights #8.

Now what?

Yusef:

Of the four rooms, the study seems to most interesting; Argent may well have some interest in these books, at the very least. Returning to that room, Yusef cancels his Darkform and returns to solidity.

First priority is to grab the books and stuff them in his pack. Yusef searches the desk and the rest of the room for anything else that looks to be of value or interest to a mage.

Moving to the door, Yusef examines it carefully, trying to figure out if he thinks he may be able to bash it down. Meanwhile, he calls out, "Sherra? You okay out there?"

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

While she wait, Sherra thinks she can hear something from one of the rooms. By Tymora, don't let him be in trouble, she thinks, fearing that he is injured or in combat and she can't reach him.

Reaching the door, she can just make out what Yusef is saying..
Meanwhile, he calls out, "Sherra? You okay out there?"
"Oh just fine," she calls back, "sitting out here bored while you get to have all the fun!"

Sherra can only hope that since he's taking a long time, he's found something intersting.

‘Yes, that does make sense,” Argent agrees. “Build something to your own personal specifications rather then trying to adapt to something already existing. Yes, I like that.”
When the time comes to depart, Chareos will offer his arm to Argent to escort her into the stone house.
“As I’ve said before, you’re a scholar and a gentleman. Let us depart this frozen hell once and for all.”

"Thank Celestian!" Yusef murmurs to himself as he hears that Sherra is fine.

"Please step back!" he calls through the door to her. "I'm going to try to break the door down! If you can find anything to burn, you might try melting one of the other doors!"

He pauses a couple moments for her response and to give her time to get out of the way. Yusef then goes to work on the door with his hands and feet. With his tough skin, he's not worried about hurting himself. After a minute or so of battering, he'll look for any sign of cracks forming or other sign that his efforts are working.

Treasure Hunting:

Up in the towers, Yusef has used an innate ability to circumvent the magically sealed doors. Yusef returns to solidity and collects the various tomes he found sprawled on Kalandor’s desk. Moving to the sealed door, Yusef warns Sherra back. The monk then begins to strike the door with his hands and feet, using his martial arts training.

There is no effect at first. But then small hairline fractures begin to appear and rapidly expand. After a few more blows, the ice door simply shatters, falling into innumerable shards on the floor. Yusef is now free to exit this chamber. The other doors can be broken down just as easily.

Silvarn:
"I too would like to accompany you Anja, if that is alright with you and Silvarn," Lyonessa adds. "Plus a chance to see your homeland would be most welcome despite the cold, Silvarn."
Anja would welcome the company.

“I think you’ll enjoy this trip”, Silvarn tells Lyonessa. “My people enjoy singers, theater performers and all sorts of entertainers. We’re a highly civilized and cultured race.”

Yusef is just beginning to wonder if this is going to work when he starts to hear a soft cracking sound from the ice. With that encouragement, he continues steadily pounding away. After a short while, his efforts are rewarded as the door shatters into a million pieces.

Looking about for Sherra, his eyes quickly lock on the beautiful rogue. "Well, that was easier than I expected. Wanna dig about in the room while I work on the other doors?" Pointing to the other doors one at a time, he identifies each one. This one goes to her bedchamber, that one to a dressingroom, and the other to what looks to be a mage laboratory. Which would you like me to try next?"

Once Sherra picks one, Yusef will assault the appropriate door.

Lyonessa will smile at Anja, glad that she will be going with her. Lyonessa can't help but feel that she should help Anja in any way she can, maybe like a big sister would.

"That sounds very enjoyable, Silvarn," Lyonessa replies. "I can hardly wait now to see such a wonderful sounding place."

"You know my dear Yusef, I'm beginning to think there isn't anything you can't do." Sherra says with a playful smile.

"I would imagine the mage laboratory might have some useful things for Argent and Chareos even if you and I can't benefit from any of it," Sherra suggests. "After that I would imagine the dressing room might have some interesting things more than the bedchamber."

As she prepares to walk into the room that Yusef just exited, Sherra turns to warn him, "Just be careful for any magical traps in the laboratory. I would hate for anything to happen to you."

Yusef jerks slightly when Sherra calls him 'my dear', but tries not to show it. "Actually, there are many things I cannot do. However, it is the teaching of our order that we should strive to reach beyond our limitations. After all, if you don't push yourself, how will you ever know what your true limitations are?"

Yusef considers for a second. "In fact, I've been working on a new technique. Once we return to a more stable place than this, I hope to find someone with a bow to practice with."

"As you wish. I hope to get them all done, but I'll work in that order, just in case we run out of time." He turns toward the lab in order to get to work on the door.

Treasure Hunting:

The remaining doors in Kalandor’s area are broken down under Yusef’s assault. Each one just takes a couple of minutes to breach. In short order, all the areas are open for inspection. No traps are noticed or triggered.

The mage lab area is where Kalandor worked on creating new spells and magic items. However, since neither Sherra nor Yusef are trained in such things they cannot know for certain what items would be useful and which wouldn’t be.

The dressing room holds several spare Priestess of Auril robes, but does have regular clothing. Other non-Auril robes, a few dresses, sleeping attire, and so on. There is several pieces jewelry present: Three pairs of earrings, a necklace, two rings, and an armband.

The bedchamber is sparsely furnished. There is a bed, but only sheets cover it. Being immune to cold, Kalandor had no need for blankets.

The arcane tomes and the jewelry seem to be the most valuable items here. The clothing is a matter of taste and the items in the mage lab may or not be valuable to the untrained eye.

Return to Fort Fletcher:

Many hours later, Silvarn arrives bearing news that the raid on the Hextor Temple has successful. She’s going to transport you to Fort Fletcher so that you can pick any gear you have there and also pick up Po, Arocken, and your mounts. From there, you’ll be taken to Karn’s Keep.

Traveling along with Silvarn is Oran Firehammer, who has joined the dwarf contingent on their quest to reclaim Hammerfall.

After some discussion about what to do with the half-human sisters, it is agreed that Silvarn transport them to her home where others of her race are skilled in dealing with those who used to follow the Cold Maiden.

The Guardians and their prisoners step into the Stone House. The next time the door opens they are inside Fort Fletcher!

“Gather what you need,” Silvarn tells the group. “The Stone House can be taken to where ever your mounts are, so that they can be taken in. Time is not of the essence, but we should keep moving. You’ll be spending this night in Karn’s Keep.”

Corley:

Once back at Fort Fletcher, Sir Corley will gather the commanders and explain the situation to them.

“My companions and I have been summoned to Karn’s Keep on an urgent matter. We’ve defeated the forces of the Cold One, so they will not trouble you again. With the foul weather that has settled in the pass, coupled with the defeats they have recently faced, the rocs should not be any trouble either. I am confident that you will be able to hold this fort in our absence. Lady Aria and her companions will be here as part of their quest to reclaim their lost dwarven holdings. Give them whatever aid you can.”

Sir Corley will assist in getting the mounts into the Stone House. He’ll grab the remainder of his gear and be prepared to journey to Karn’s Keep.

Before departing, he’ll take time to say his goodbyes to those not traveling with us.

“Good fortune with your mission, Lady Aria. Perhaps our paths will cross again in the future.”

The young Knight will clasp hands with Grondar.

“We’ve ridden for some time now, Grondar of Berronar, but it seems our paths are going separate ways. Take could care of your companions and may you be victorious in your quest.”

Sir Corley will pause to say a few words to Farian.

“While we have not travel for long, your skills are unquestioned. Lead your companions safely through the mines.”

That being said, Sir Corley takes on last look around Fort Fletcher before departing entering the Stone House.

Ivy:

Ivy’s excited to finally be away from the Ice Palace. Once let out at Fort Fletcher, she’ll go and pick up the few belongings she left here. She’ll also collect any gear that Sir Acerion might have left her as well. She’ll help with moving his Pegasus into the Stone House.

Ivy will be sure to say goodbye to Olivia and thank her for all her help. She hopes that they will meet again one day down the line.

Before leaving, Ivy will say her goodbye to Grondar. She’ll give the dwarf a big hug.

“Be careful, you crusty old dwarf”, Ivy tells her friend. “You better take care of yourself.”

Then it’s off to Fort Fletcher.

“Ah!”, Aria says as she exits the Stone House. “Good to be someplace that’s not ice or freezing! Come on, lads. Let’s go find our kin and relax after our well earned victory!”

Aria leads the way to the quarters the dwarves are using. Once there she’ll share the tale of their exploits while quenching her thirst with dwarven ale. She’ll introduce her new companion to the others.

“Tomorrow we’ll begin our work anew. As I recall we ran into spiders down in those tunnels. They’ll need to be cleared out before we can advance any further.”

Sir Corley wrote:“Good fortune with your mission, Lady Aria. Perhaps our paths will cross again in the future.”
“Fortune won’t have as much to do with it as axes and hammers will!” Aria retorts. “You just keep the southern lands safe and we’ll handle this region.”

Yusef:

The key to removing the doors seems to simply be: determination. While Sherra rifles through the study, Yusef methodically destroys the doors to the remaining room.

From the lab, Yusef will grab any books, notes, scrolls or anything else with writing on it. He will do the same in the study and add the materials to the books he already grabbed. He will leave the clothing, jewelry and whatnot to Sherra as they hold no interest for him.

Lastly, he carefully searches each room for any hidden doors or compartments - splitting the chore with Sherra if she is so inclined.

---

They arrive at Fort Fletcher after a quick trip. Even though he is not as affected by cold as others, Yusef is still pleased to be somewhere warm - if even only for a moment. No doubt Karn's Keep will be warmer still.

Learning that the dwarves will be staying here, Yusef searches out Grondar. "You've been a good friend, Grondar Foehammer. I pray we meet again. I know you will do your people and your patron proud."

Yusef sees Aria and Farian and approaches them as well. "It has been an honor to serve by your sides. May the gods lead you both to that which you seek."

Ivy wrote:“Be careful, you crusty old dwarf”, Ivy tells her friend. “You better take care of yourself.”

Lastly, he carefully searches each room for any hidden doors or compartments - splitting the chore with Sherra if she is so inclined.
Sherra agrees to Yusef's final inspection before we wrap it up. She will methodically look for anything that might still remain hidden to them.

<"So you think you're going to get away that easily?"> Sherra asks in dwarven as Grondar finishes up his farewells. <"I'm going to miss you more than my heart can say, but this isn't goodbye,">

Sherra kisses Grondar on the top of his head and when she pulls back he thinks he sees her eyes tearing, or is it just the light? <"Until next we meet..."> she says, and then turns to go.

Treasure Hunting:

Up in the main tower of the Ice Palace Sherra and Yusef are finishing up their sweep of Kalandor’s chambers. From the study, they grabbed what they guess to be Kalandor’s spell books and from the lab Yusef picks up books, notes, and whatever scrolls he can find. The Priest of Celestian literally ends up with his hands completely full of books.

Sherra helps herself to the Kalandor’s collection of jewelry, eyeing an armband for herself. Any further searching turns up nothing of interest. A few other odds and ends are gathered before rejoining the others.

The books are shown to the mages for them to see if they are valuable or not. Silvarn arrives hours later and you’re off to Fort Fletcher.

Fort Fletcher:

The Guardians stay at Fort Fletcher is a brief one. The rest of the groups’ belongings are picked up, as are their mounts. Before leaving they say their farewells to their dwarven friends who will be continuing on to liberate Hammerfall.
Aria wrote:"Tomorrow we'll begin our work anew. As I recall we ran into spiders down in those tunnels. They'll need to be cleared out before we can advance any further."
Grondar wrote:"As good a place to start as any, Lady Aria. Some torches will make short work of all those webs and give the spiders little place to hide."

“I’ll have no need for torches,” Oran proclaims. As he speaks, he holds his hammer over is head. It ignites upon his command!

“The Firehammer has been passed down through the generations in my clan. It will safely lead the way through these nests of spiders.”

GM Notes:

With this post, we wrap up our stay at both the Ice Palace and Fort Fletcher. Those continuing on to Karn’s Keep appeared there next over in Cynalon Knights.

I’ll have another update for the dwarves over in their own game folder entitled “Hammerfall” later on in the week. There’s some pre-work I need to do before posting.

With the next New Frontiers post, we’ll be covering the Guardians arriving at Castle Pyris from Karn’s Keep. The business at Karn’s Keep will continue to unfold over in Cynalon Knights, while new business in Pyris will pick up here.

Now what?

Sir Corley

Sir Corley:
"Fortune won't have as much to do with it as axes and hammers will!" Aria retorts. "You just keep the southern lands safe and we'll handle this region."
“It’s a deal Lady Aria. Let both of us meet with success.”
Grondar wrote:"Thank you, Corley. You have proven yourself a fine leader and a valiant warrior. I have no doubt that we shall meet again."
“I am sure our paths will cross once more. Until that day, Grondar of Berronar, be well.”

Ivy:
"You too, Ivy," Grondar says with just a hint of a catch in his throat. "The Blue Lady couldn't ask for a finer representative. Until we meet again."
“It won’t be soon enough,” Ivy responds, trying to keep the tears from her eyes. “I’ll miss our little talks.”
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

Farian
Playing catch up-

Sir Corley wrote-
Sir Corley will pause to say a few words to Farian.

“While we have not travel for long, your skills are unquestioned. Lead your companions safely through the mines.”
“You honor me.” He grumbles softly to the complement, “We will reclaim what is rightfully ours.”

Tapping the Large warrior on his bicep, “You are a fine warrior and man. I only wish I could have known you better. Take care of yourself and the other in your endeavors.”

Yusef sees Aria and Farian and approaches them as well. "It has been an honor to serve by your sides. May the gods lead you both to that which you seek."
“And you Fire eyes. May da road rise up and meet you.”

Once all of the goodbyes have been said, Grondar joins Aria, Rat, Farian, Oran and the others in the fort. He will hoist an ale to their future success, though he drinks and eats in moderation.

Farian will raise a glass of ale high in the air the foam dripping and sloshing about. “For to long we have be absent from our lands. The earth will tremble beneath our feet as our dwarven steel carves our way into their ranks!

Yusef:
Sherra wrote:"Be careful what you wish for," Sherra says with a smirk. "You might be stuck with it."
Yusef looks at Sherra seriously for a moment. "I could hardly hope or pray for more," he replies at last.

When they're finished with Kalandor's quarters, Yusef will suggest to Sherra that they return to Mina's quarters. "I have an idea for that malevolent tome we found. If you can tie one of your ropes around that big book without touching it, we should be able to drag it back and let the wizards figure out what to do with it. I'd rather not leave it behind if it can be avoided; you never know who might find it."

If they have time after they return to camp, Yusef will ask Anja if there is anything she would like them to retrieve from her room.

GM Notes:

Some quick notes here.

The book from Mina’s quarters can be tied to a rope and then dragged back down to the others. Anja explains that is the Codicil of White, a holy text on the Auril faith. The book will freeze any non-faithful who dares to touch it. Once she is aware of this book, Silvarn will insist on taking it with her.

There's nothing Anja wants from her old quarters. Neither of the girls had much in the way of belongings.

During the down time, Sherra will sort through the gems she found in Mina’s quarters. Here’s the breakdown:

1 Alexandrite, 7 Bloodstones, 15 Coral, 1 Garnet, 19 Jade, 22 Obsidian, 4 Pearls, 28 Star Rose Quartz, and 10 Topazes’.

Grondar:
Grondar wrote:<"So you think you're going to get away that easily?"> Sherra asks in dwarven as Grondar finishes up his farewells. <"I'm going to miss you more than my heart can say, but this isn't goodbye,">

Sherra kisses Grondar on the top of his head and when she pulls back he thinks he sees her eyes tearing, or is it just the light? <"Until next we meet..."> she says, and then turns to go.
Grondar gives a quirky smile up at the young human woman. <"There is never a need for goodbyes between us, as I shall always be with you in spirit. Fare thee well, and key an eye on that young buck Yusef. Without a strong hand to guide him, I fear he may stumble into trouble he's not prepared for.">

"That's certainly handy," Grondar says, seeing Oran light up the room with his hammer.
Ivy wrote:“It won’t be soon enough,” Ivy responds, trying to keep the tears from her eyes. “I’ll miss our little talks.”
"As will I, milady." Grondar gives the priestess a last awkward bow before turning away.
