Cynalon Knights #8

The Guardians have arrived at Karn’s Keep. It is a night for celebration as two major enemies to Cynalon have been dealt severe blows. First the main temple to Hextor has fallen in New Keln and their would-be sacrifices rescued. Next the Ice Palace, a grand shrine to Auril, has been removed and the artifact that created it captured. The Silver Dragon Silvarn has vowed to see to the destruction of the Heart of Winter personally. She’ll be taking it, along with the captured half-human sisters and a few others who wish to accompany her away in the morning. Otherwise everyone has a few days to relax and talk before continuing on.

The Guardians have the opportunity to speak to many of the more important people in the kingdom, including the King himself. Many familiar faces are present, including Lady Jallarzi, Elspeth of Azrella, Crysania of Heironeous, Lord Sharadin, and Sir Alon. One new face is Serena of Mystra, an Inquisitor from the far-away land of Alphatia. Numerous other nobles are here for the present, but most will be moving on over the next few days.

Also present are many former members of the Seekers, the adventuring band Baron Validar traveled with during his time in the Keln Lands before being summoned home. The members of this group include Arocken, the elfin ranger who accompanied you at Fort Fletcher, Blod, the hulking warrior with a simplistic mind, Zynara, Blod’s wife and a Conjurist mage who has a large snake named Sheba as a familiar, Bernice, a halfling ‘finder’ who is frequently terrorized by said snake, Araduin, an elfin mage, and Dar Thaltus an elfin Priest of Ehlonna.

Karn’s Keep is a huge place and there should be plenty to keep everyone occupied. There the main attraction is the mage guild with the huge library and spell library. All the Guardians who can cast mage spells are honorary members of the guild and can make use of its facilities. There are shrines dedicated to Mystra, Azrella, Tymora and Heironeous present. All four are in the same chamber, but these chambers were originally built for giants and are enormous. The area of the shrines is a vast 90’ square chamber, so there is plenty of room for all four faiths.

There’s even a targeting range on the third floor of the keep, for those who wish to practice their archery. The Keep is high up in the mountains and given the time of year, it’s a bit too cold to go outside for long.

The hour is very late when Yusef is granted his audience with the King. He, Silvarn and any one else who wishes to accompany them is escorted before the King. King Victor the 8th stands over six feet tall and has brown eyes, hair, and beard. He wears the Royal Crown and it appears to be nearly priceless. Standing close by is Dame Sharl, a knight of the realm and the King’s consort. Sharl eyes Yusef carefully and then whispers something to the King.

“You may approach,” the King says, gesturing the group to come forward. “I am told that you have ties to the Deville Family of Elcadan?”

GM Notes:

There was lots of posting in the previous post, so don’t forget to check it too. The Guardian’s mounts were brought along as well and were being stabled at the Keep for the time being, although the stable hands are unsure just how to deal with the Pegasus.

Magic items:

By now, most of the horde of items taken from Hextor’s temple has been identified. There are far too many for me to list, therefore I will allow each person associated with the raid to make as many as three selections from the starting list of magic items in the Character creation file on the World of Cynalon reference page. This would include Blod, Baron Validar, Sir Acerion, Serena, and so on. Take your pick of the rewards!

The following is a list of magic items the Guardians liberated from the Ice Palace.

Kalandor’s Staff of Winter is actually a Staff of Power that was transformed by the Heart of Winter. As the days go on, it’ll take on a more wooden appearance until it no longer looks like a giant icicle.

One of the rings and the necklace that Argent took from Kalandor’s body are normal, non-enchanted jewelry. The remaining magical ring is a Ring of Winter; it is a Holy Ring of Auril and can only be used by her priests.

The Ice Bracers that Kalandor wore also begin to change into a more mundane appearance. However, they do remain special. They function like Bracers of AC: 5 now, but had additional cold-related powers before.

The items taken from the altar break down as follows. The arrows, 60 of them in all, are Arrows of Ice. These cold-to-the-touch shafts inflict extra cold damage to their target upon striking. The longbow and the shortbow are both +1 weapons.

The battle-axes are all Maiden Axe’s, the traditional weapon of Auril. Otherwise, they are battleaxes +1. The twelve daggers are all now +1.

Most of the swords have reverted back into normal weapons. There are 5 longswords +1, a shortsword +1, and a scimitar +1. Two of the swords remained empowered. One of the longswords and the two-handed sword are both Frostbrands.

Now what?

Elspeth:
Much to her surprise, Elspeth is here! Ivy makes her way over and hugs her best friend and will speak to her, all the while keeping her eyes open.

“Elspeth! It is so good to see you again. What brings you here?”
Elspeth happily returns Ivy’s greeting.

“Jallarzi asked me to come along in case that my healing skills were needed. They were not needed as much as I feared they would be, but I was still needed. It is so good to see you! What have you been up to?”

Elspeth can’t help but notice that Ivy is looking for someone. Just who eludes the gentle healer until she sees Ivy staring at Sir Acerion.

“It seems that you have much to catch me up on,” Elspeth says with a knowing smile. “We will speak more tomorrow.”
How can I help?

Ivy:
Elspeth happily returns Ivy’s greeting.

“Jallarzi asked me to come along in case that my healing skills were needed. They were not needed as much as I feared they would be, but I was still needed. It is so good to see you! What have you been up to?”
“Of course, that makes sense. It’s been one crisis after another since we last spoke. We were in the thick of the situation in Corunglain and then helped clear out and fortify Fort Fletcher. Then we raided a temple to the Cold Goddess. That’s where we just returned from.”
Elspeth can’t help but notice that Ivy is looking for someone. Just who eludes the gentle healer until she sees Ivy staring at Sir Acerion.

“It seems that you have much to catch me up on,” Elspeth says with a knowing smile. “We will speak more tomorrow.”
“Yes,” Ivy agrees. “There is much I wish to tell you in a more private setting. Until tomorrow.”

"I am glad none of you suffered horribly from the cold and that it is now over," Acerion says grimly, the thought of her or any of his friends freezing to death haunting his thoughts for a moment.
“Indeed, the long wait until Silvarn returned was the worst of it. Thankfully Argent knew a spell that created a temporary shelter from the cold. Otherwise, it would have been much worse.”
"Very well, I would not dream to deny such a request of my lady," Acerion says, leading Ivy back to his chambers.

Once there, he will pull Ivy close and hold her, not needing to share any word, but just to be alone in her presence. Eventually the two will step apart, and he will make room, moving his armor and weapons so that she may relax. Acerion will find a place to sit next to her.

"I heard some of what Sir Corley was saying as we departed, it sounds like you all had your hands full," Acerion prompts, seeing if that's what Ivy wishes to talk about.
“It was challenging,” Ivy agrees. “I only wish I had been able to do more in the battle, but it is the final result that counts. I never imagined that we’d be facing a devil. It was a horrible, monstrous creature! But we prevailed and that is the most important thing. Then there is the two half-human girls we captured. I’m not sure what will happen to them, but one of them, Anja, doesn’t seem to be all that evil. She seems innocent, almost child-like and followed her mother because she didn’t know anything else. Silvarn is going to take them both away to see if they can be retrained. I’m going to go with her tomorrow morning, but Silvarn promises we won’t be gone long. Based on my talks with Anja, I think she might make a fine Priestess of Azrella one day. Provided people can get past her unusual appearance.”

Eventually, weariness sets in and Ivy drifts off to sleep, nearly exhausted from the long day.

Chareos

The Stone House soon opens and several of the others move forward. With his Quarterstaff in hand Chareos steps from the artifact, his staff clicking off the stone. Stopping in his tracks Chareos eyes go slightly wide and his mouth drops in surprise at the sheer vastness of the surrounding structure.

“I now know how an insect feels within the hands of man.” He says softly. Tearing his eyes away from the high elaborate ceiling Chareos looks to where Argent shows the shrines and other necessities.
“The shrines are beyond that door over in the corner. The kitchen is that way. Those interested in the mage library, just follow me!”
“I’ll be along in a moment,” casting a glance towards Validar and Acerion, among countless others. “I do not wish to be rude to our hosts.” He said with a soft smile hoping that she wouldn’t become aggravated with him.

Upon seeing Sir Acerion, Chareos will greet him, grasping hands, “It is good to see you well, my friend. I trust your mission was met with success?”

Upon seeing Validar and his lady beside him Chareos slowly approaches, extending his hand. “It seems congratulations are in order, Baron.” He says with a bow of respect. Looking between the apparent couple, “Forgive me, where are my manners?” He says this with an apologetic look. “I don’t believe I've had the pleasure. Chareos the Mage, at your service. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." He says with an easy smile from beneath his unshaven face. Turning back to Baron Validar, “I have not forgotten of your lessons; the answer still eludes me.”

Spotting his mentor, Chareos greets Sharadin with a hearty handshake and asks him how he has faired since last they met. “Master Sharadin,” he says in respect, “You spoke of membership for the Mage Guild here. Is the offer still valid? I am curious to see what spells it has to offer, whether old or new.”

Chareos will also greet all those within the room who are not Guardians.

Soon after Chareos follows Argent through the high ceilings of Karn’s Keep. “By far the bards do not do this keep justice. It is much larger than I would have ever suspected,” he says to Argent as they make their way.

“Here it is! The towers continue up beyond this point. Each has its own laboratory and private quarters to it. There’s plenty to explore. But I think I’m going to catch up on my sleep first. It’s been a very long day.”
Chareos is thoroughly impressed with the sheer size of the Guild; no wonder it is held in such high regard. “I should get some rest as well. The trials of what we faced has taken its toll. As much as I would like to pour over the spells entombed here, I’m afraid my head hurts with such thoughts. Would you like to dine together later?”

Baron Validar -

Just to help with a clarification MAD gave me, the Guardians appear in the evening of the first full day that the group is back from the Hextorite attack. That means that there is a full day before we all leave for Pyris and not just the evening.

Lady Gabriella Allonica:
“That does make sense. I’ll see what I can do in regards to the Lady Ardel.”

"As your reputation preceeds you, you have much to live up to," Validar responds playfully. "I look forward to witnessing you in action."

“While I do not desire such a thing as too many innocents will perish while the nobles struggle for power, it would effectively remove those who are undesirable. Like cutting down dead limbs from a tree. I only wish there was another way.”

"Indeed that is true. The problem is that it is impossible to determine who should be cut without some grand inquisition. And even then, those truly powerful from the undesirable group would manage to hide until it were too late."

"There simply may not be any other option. Unless there were some way to split the Kingdom in two and make it an Empire, I do not see how civil war can be avoided. I do not know if the King's ambition is so great, but there is much territory all around us. Unfortunately, just recovering what we once had will be a challenge and the amount of change and focus that is required to do so will bring out those opposed to the changes, however positive they may be. I cannot see any other alternative."

“Yes, I can see what you mean seeing Sir Acerion and Ivy embrace. They make a lovely couple and it would be a shame to plot to separate them.”

"Yes, and more than a shame it would be a disservice to a friend. Both are valuable allies as well. While it would always be possible to manage to 'push things' as we would desire them, sometimes one has to adjust to circumstances. Not everything can be changed."

Sir Corley:
“Ah, of course. Then congratulations are to be accorded to you, my friend. May you rule wisely for many years to come.”

"Thank you for your sentiments. I hope one day you will also have the priviledge of joining me as a Baron of the Realm."

Validar listens to Sir Corley's account of their battle. "Very good, my friend. It was a rousing victory and a fine success. Even better that we have managed to avoid another enemy of the Kingdom. Perhaps now we can turn our attention to our own plans."

"Although I am not so sure about the plan to rehabilitate those demonic girls you 'rescued', I can understand the idea, especially with some of the other's opinions as strong as they are. The fact that they are going away with Silvarn is a good thing in my opinion. I know that several of the Guardians have questionable backgrounds, but they have proven themselves by their actions. Perhaps if either of them do so gain, it will have proven to be a successful attempt."

“Earlier at Fort Fletcher, Lady Silvarn did enlighten us about the King’s decision regarding the vile Deville family. Yusef has ties to the Deville family and so wished to present himself to the King for his judgment. He did mention knowing of a summer home that family had far from Elcadan. It seems as the most likely place to search for those who fled Elcadan.”

"I see. That is an important bit of information. Removing the Devilles is an important task to be sure and one that would help us to secure all of Elcadan," Validar says as he rubs his chin in thought. "Where is this location that they may have fled to?"

“Thus it was that Lady Silvarn did bring us here, as opposed to Pyris. I assume that our presence was requested for the purpose of tracking the demonic Deville’s?”

"That was not the full reason, but I think it was a function of circumstances rather than plan. The plan was for the Guardians to assist in the reclamation of Elcadan, and to help hunt down the demons that they have cavorted with for so long. In truth, hunting down the Devilles will accomplish that to a degree and more."

"We will have a planning session tomorrow and find out what everyone is doing themselves. I see Grondar has not returned to us, as expected. Perhaps there are others that have their own agendas to complete. At least we have continued to grow our stable of power with so many Seekers at our disposal. There is much to do and it is not likely that anyone should be idle should they desire some adventure."

"I am meeting with Duke Corun after lunch to finalize our initial plans for an alliance between the duchies of Elcadan and Corunglain. There are many opportunities to further our connection available to us as well." He gives Corley a knowing look, but one he doesn't expect his younger friend to understand. "So after that, we should get the Guardians together to learn about the details Yusef has and how to approach the investigation."

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Yusef:
Validar will greet the wandering priest along with the others, when they arrive in Karn's Keep.

Later, after his conversation with Corley, he will make a point of searching fro Yusef to find out the story about this secret location where the Devilles may be hiding.

"I am sorry for the intrusion, but Sir Corley has informed me that you have some information on where the Deville family may have run off to with the public announcement of their demonic alliances. He mentioned that this hidden location is somewhere on the shores of Lake Amsorak, somewhere south of Akorros. He was not more specific than that however. If that is so, it is in a territory that is relatively unclaimed currently. A perfect location to be hiding from authorities."

"As you may have heard by now, my father is now the Duke of Elcadan. A changed and altered Elcadan to be sure, and we have the duty to bring the territories under control. This would certainly be advanced from the permanent removal of any of the Devilles that had such evil connections. Therefore, hunting them down is a priority in our next series of actions. I trust it may have some personal attachment to you as well," Validar says. "What can you tell me of this hideout?"

Magical Item Award:
By now, most of the horde of items taken from Hextor’s temple has been identified. There are far too many for me to list, therefore I will allow each person associated with the raid to make as many as three selections from the starting list of magic items in the Character creation file on the World of Cynalon reference page.

When Validar is informed that most of the horde of magic items has been identified and that he is allowed to make a choice from those spoils, he will head to the room where the items are kept when he has the time. Arriving there, he takes the lists and begins to scan them over, starting with the hand-to-hand weapons. Suddenly, something cathes his eye.

"A dragon-slayer? An interesting addition to my collection, I would say," Validar says to no one in particular as he searches the racks for the obvious weapon. Eventually, he comes to a sword with a whitish sheen on its blade and a dark grey pommel. He lifts the longsword, checking its heft and examining it closely.

"A very fine weapon. I have never encountered a white dragon before, but I understand that these swords are particularly useful against all dragon types and especially deadly to the dragon type they were forged to slay. I shall claim this as my first selection in the award process." Sheathing the sword in its scabbard, Validar places the weapon aside and goes back to scanning the information that has been assembled.

"While extremely useful, most of these items are of moderate magickal power. I assume that the leaders and such managed to keep the most powerful magicks for themselves. While not many more of the weapons are on par with the equipment I have now, still there are things here that could be quite beneficial." Validar considers for a few moments. While the thought of adding another sword, particularly a Flametongue, to his collection is appealing, he decides on a more practical selection.

"With my second choice, I would like to take the Ring of Fire Resistance. For some reason I think that there is likely to be another encounter with Ember in the future and this can only be of assistance there as well as against mages and their very effective fireballs."

Validar considers some more. So many of the items are unusable by him. Should he take something for the future or for current use. Eventually, he makes his decision. "This Scarab of Protection is an intriguing selection. I shall choose that. Who knows when such protection may prove necessary. Our enemies have many powerful magicks at their disposal."

With his selections complete, Validar will claim the items and get back to the many tasks at hand.

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Sherra steps out into Karn's Keep, looks around and lets out a low whistle. A good place to get lost in, who knows what I might find, she thinks to herself.

She spots Ivy re-uniting with Sir Acerion and smiles, seeing their embrace. She'll save saying hello to him later. Sherra does spot Sir, or is it now Baron, Validar with Sir Corley. A regal and beautiful woman stands by Validar's side. Well that sure explains alot, she thinks, putting some things together.

At an opportune moment, Sherra will approach Validar, smiling all the while. Validar can only wonder if the thief is going behave herself by the mischevious grin on her face. In the end she does, "Well met once again, Baron. I suppose I should congratulate you on both your new title and success in your quest. It is good to see you are well."

Sherra will smile at the woman pleasantly while awaiting introductions, and can only wonder what the sight of her, decked out in all black leather and bristling with weapons, is causing that same woman to think.
The hour is very late when Yusef is granted his audience with the King. He, Silvarn and any one else who wishes to accompany them is escorted before the King.
"If you want me to, I will be there with you," Sherra tells Yusef before he gets his audience. She'll slip her hand into his, "I don't want you to think you're alone in any of this."

Hearing that there is a shrine to Tymora, Sherra considers visiting it. She puts it off until the morning, especially considering the late audience with the King, but will visit the shrine in a rare moment of formal reverence.

Another Step

Post by Yusef »

Yusef:

Emerging from the Stone House, Yusef notes the incredible size of the keep. He's used to fine furnishings, having grown up on the Deville estate in Elcadan, but the size takes a little getting used to. "Impressive..." he murmurs to himself.

Seeing Sir Acerion, Yusef recognises the paladin - Ivy's love. "Ah... good to see you again, Sir Acerion," Yusef says politely, glancing about at all the people around them.

As he waits for his audience with the king, Yusef's nervousness increases. He has no way of knowing what will happen to him, and the presence of all this nobility leaves him ill at ease.

A little later, Validar approaches, asking questions about the Deville country estate. Yusef hesitates for a second. "Uhm... yes. It's rather luxurious, really, considering of course that it's way out in the middle of nowhere. It's... ah... in a bit of a hidden depression among some hills. If I still have my freedom after... uh... meeting with the king, I'll be happy to lead you there. If not... maybe I can manage to draw some kind of map?" Yusef seems far more nervous and distracted than the cool, quiet young man Validar met so briefly earlier.
"If you want me to, I will be there with you," Sherra tells Yusef before he gets his audience. She'll slip her hand into his, "I don't want you to think you're alone in any of this."
Yusef glances down at her hand and licks lips nervously as his cheeks turn a bit more reddish than usual, but he doesn't pull away. "That would be, ah... very much appreciated, Sherra."

Evetually the time comes and Yusef is invited in for his audience with the king. As he enters, he glances over at Dame Sharl and Silvarn before returning his gaze to King Victor the 8th. Guessing at the appropriate place to stop, Yusef drops to one knee and bows his head. "M-m-my liege," he stammers.
King Victor wrote:“You may approach,” the King says, gesturing the group to come forward. “I am told that you have ties to the Deville Family of Elcadan?”
"Y-y-yes, sire. Though I hate to admit it, I bear the st-stain of the Devilles."

Lyonessa:

Lyonessa will join the others in saying their hellos to Sir Acerion and Baron Validar. Her heart is warmed at seeing Ivy re-united with her love, and she can't help but wonder how Laucian is faring on his quest.

She will visit the shrine to Mystra and spend some time in prayer and thanks for seeing everyone through their quests and other recent challenges. Lyonessa will then find a common area or a dining area and play a few ballads for any who wish to stop and listen, and to just help pass the night. She will also spend some time working on her latest ballad before retiring for the night.

In the morning, Lyonessa will pray for spells and prepare for her journey with Ivy, Anja and Yusef to Silvarn's homeland.

"Hmmm, ice arrows could be handy," Sherra says outloud to herself, and will take 10 of them since she doesn't want to completely deplete her normal arrow supply.

"A few extra daggers could always be useful too." She will tuck away another brace of those as well, leaving plenty for anyone else who may want some.

"Of course the short bow would be helpful as well," Sherra adds, but will wait to see if anyone else is in need of it. After all, she can't be too greedy.

Sir Corley:
Baron Validar wrote:"Thank you for your sentiments. I hope one day you will also have the privilege of joining me as a Baron of the Realm."
“Me?” Sir Corley answers in mild surprise. “I will not inherent any lands unless I should become the betrothed on a baroness.”
Validar listens to Sir Corley's account of their battle. "Very good, my friend. It was a rousing victory and a fine success. Even better that we have managed to avoid another enemy of the Kingdom. Perhaps now we can turn our attention to our own plans."
“Indeed, we believe that the Cold Maiden’s grasp on this world is even less know. That can only mean good things for us a less future danger for the fair Kharyna.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Although I am not so sure about the plan to rehabilitate those demonic girls you 'rescued', I can understand the idea, especially with some of the other's opinions as strong as they are. The fact that they are going away with Silvarn is a good thing in my opinion. I know that several of the Guardians have questionable backgrounds, but they have proven themselves by their actions. Perhaps if either of them do so gain, it will have proven to be a successful attempt."
“I could not, in good conscious, slay an enemy that had already surrendered, as you well know, my friend. To do so would only lower us to the standards of our enemies. Nay, we must strive to be better than those we fight! To do otherwise is unthinkable.”
Baron Validar wrote:"I see. That is an important bit of information. Removing the Deville’s is an important task to be sure and one that would help us to secure all of Elcadan," Validar says as he rubs his chin in thought. "Where is this location that they may have fled to?"
“Yusef did not speak further on the subject beyond what I have already told you.”

Baron Validar wrote:"That was not the full reason, but I think it was a function of circumstances rather than plan. The plan was for the Guardians to assist in the reclamation of Elcadan, and to help hunt down the demons that they have cavorted with for so long. In truth, hunting down the Deville’s will accomplish that to a degree and more."
“It was my understanding that the demons who held Elcadan and the Deville family was one and the same. Or do you suspect there are others beyond that foul family?”
Baron Validar wrote: "We will have a planning session tomorrow and find out what everyone is doing themselves. I see Grondar has not returned to us, as expected. Perhaps there are others that have their own agendas to complete. At least we have continued to grow our stable of power with so many Seekers at our disposal. There is much to do and it is not likely that anyone should be idle should they desire some adventure."
“Yes, he, Lady Aria, and Farian did remain at Fort Fletcher to carryout their mission for the Dwarven Lords. They were joined by Oran Firehammer, so I cannot help be optimistic about their future success. Plus their presence will help defend Fort Fletcher should they be attacked again, although at this point I believe the fort will be safe at least until the orcs have recovered from their recent setbacks.
Baron Validar wrote:"I am meeting with Duke Corun after lunch to finalize our initial plans for an alliance between the duchies of Elcadan and Corunglain. There are many opportunities to further our connection available to us as well." He gives Corley a knowing look, but one he doesn't expect his younger friend to understand. "So after that, we should get the Guardians together to learn about the details Yusef has and how to approach the investigation."
“Very Good. We’ll talk more tomorrow.”

Sir Corley feels the need to attend Yusef’s meeting with the king to vouch for the wandering monk’s character. He is not surprised to find Lady Sherra present as well.

Later, Sir Corley is made aware that the items retrieved from the Ice Palace have been identified. There is only one item that draws his attention, that being the lone Greatsword.

“A Frostbrand you say?”

Lord Sharadin explains that the blade does extra damage against fiery creatures and offers protection against fire.

“A fine weapon indeed!” Sir Corley notes. “I will take this as my choice of items.”

The knights’ current weapon will be held in reserve in case something happens to his new sword. Sir Corley has no interest in any of the other items.

Before retiring for the evening, Sir Corley will check up on his noble steed, brushing and feeding Destrier as need be.

The items taken from the Ice Palace have been identified. “There’s nothing here I can make use of,” Ivy notes. “Although I think that Ring of the Frost Maiden should be taken away by Silvarn to be destroyed as well.”

Next morning, Ivy will dress and head down to the Azrella Shrine to pray for new spells. She’ll pray for multiple Endure Cold spells for the journey to Silvarn’s home to protect herself and Anja.
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

Argent:

Argent’s all set to head off to the mage guild areas, but Chareos has other ideas.
Chareos wrote:“I’ll be along in a moment,” casting a glance towards Validar and Acerion, among countless others. “I do not wish to be rude to our hosts.” He said with a soft smile hoping that she wouldn’t become aggravated with him.
“Of course,” Argent answers after a moment’s thought. “No, we would not want to be rude. The library is not going anywhere.”

Argent joins Chareos in meeting and greeting the others. She remains charming and pleasant the whole time.
Upon seeing Sir Acerion, Chareos will greet him, grasping hands, “It is good to see you well, my friend. I trust your mission was met with success?”
“Yes, it quite an achievement you’ve accomplished. The forces of Hextor have long plagued the eastern lands.”
Chareos the Mage at your service. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance." He says with an easy smile from beneath his unshaven face. Turning back to Baron Validar, “I have not forgotten of your lessons; the answer still eludes me.”

“Yes, congratulations are in order,” Argent adds to Baron Validar. “We’ll have a matter to discuss in the future. We’re thinking of acquiring some property on the outskirts of Elcadan, much like Jallarzi has to use as our personal residence. But that is nothing something that needs to be done soon.”

Argent will properly curtsey when introduced to Lady Allonica.
“A pleasure as always, Lord Sharadin. I still have the 5th level spell book of Opikus in my possession. I’ve just started to plumb it secrets, but I will be finished with it before we depart, so it can be properly secured for all the Guild to us.”

There are numerous other present, but not all of them are strangers to Argent. She’s encountered several of Baron Validar’s former associates before, Blod, Zynara, and Bernice to name a few. There others she’ll greet as she comes across them.
Soon after Chareos follows Argent through the high ceilings of Karn’s Keep. “By far the bards do not do this keep justice. It is much larger than I would have ever suspected,” he says to Argent as they make their way.
“It was quite a find,” Argent agrees. “Lord Sharadin has done much cleaning since the day I first was here with the Company of the Sword. We spent much time investigating this mammoth structure.”
“That’s sounds wonderful,” Argent answers. “But there is one more thing I should show you first. Come with me.”

Argent offers Chareos her hand and then will lead him further up into the smaller of the two mage towers. Once past the library level, they find themselves in a mage lab.

“This was the laboratory of the female sorceress who dwelled here long ago. Her quarters are both.”

Argent continues to lead the way to the top most level of this tower. The quarters here are luxurious and richly furnished in thick velvets and comfortable fabrics.

“This is typically where I stay while at the Karn’s Keep”, Argent explains. “But this is not the best part.”

Leading Chareos on, Argent leads him up to the huge windows the look out into the surrounding mountains. This level is 120’ above the ground and the view is magnificent.

“Wondrous is it not? Not to mention romantic as well.”

The loot from the Ice Palace has been identified and can now be picked. It seems that Silvarn was correct. The staff wielded by Kalandor as taken on a more normal appearance. “The staff is all that really interests me, so that would be my pick.”
None of the items fit Lyonessa, so she will pass on them.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but these bracers worn by Kalandor are better than the ones you currently have? Perhaps you should upgrade your protection, Lyonessa?”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Serena:

Serena is meditating at the Shrine to Mystra when Silvarn returns with the new arrivals. Rising, she goes to investigate. While it is clear that they are known to many of those already present, all are strangers to Serena’s eyes. A few mages do seem to be present, but there is one who is of interest to Serena. Noting a Holy Symbol to Mystra, Serena will step up to her fellow priestess. (Lyonessa)

“Well met, fellow priestess. I am Serena, an Inquisitor in the service of the Lady of Mysteries. May I inquire as to who you are?”
Serena is pleased to have one with such a beautiful voice to be present to sing praise to Mystra. Serena happily listens to the young bardess’ works.

“Back in my homeland of Alphatia, one of your talents would be in high demand,” Serena tells Lyonessa. “To be one who is strong in magic and to have such vocal talents would bring you great wealth, fame, and many suitors.”

Next morning, Serena rises and visits the Shrine to pray to Mystra. She is not surprised to find Lyonessa of Mystra present, but there are many others here visiting the other Shrines. Crysania of Heironeous is at the shrine to her worthy god. Not too far away is Elspeth of Azrella, a young healer of great talent. With her is another servant of the Blue Lady, an Undead Hunter by the name of Ivy. But there is another present as well.
Hearing that there is a shrine to Tymora, Sherra considers visiting it. She puts it off until the morning, especially considering the late audience with the King, but will visit the shrine in a rare moment of formal reverence.
Serena goes to greet the woman in black leather. “Well met, I am Serena of Mystra. Are you a Luckbringer?”

Later the horde of magic items from the temple raid has been identified. Many of the others have gathered to examine what there is to choose from. After a time, Serena will make her choices.

“I think I will take a Ring of Feather Falling, a Pearl of Wisdom, and a Decanter of Endless Water.”

At Karn’s Keep, Yusef has an audience with the King.
"Y-y-yes, sire. Though I hate to admit it, I bear the st-stain of the Deville’s."
“So I have been told,” the King states calmly. “Can you elaborate further? Your family has been responsible for many misdeeds in the Elcadan for many years now and they must be punished for their crimes. I have been told that you left your family many years ago to take up the faith of Celestian, the God of Wanderers. That fact that so many others have come to stand with you tells me that you are not like the others in your family. They would not willing come here to accept my judgment. Will you help us stamp out this source of corruption?”

The items taken from the Ice Palace have been identified. “There’s nothing here I can make use of,” Ivy notes. “Although I think that Ring of the Frost Maiden should be taken away by Silvarn to be destroyed as well.”

Silvarn will agree to this as well, and will take the ring away with her when she leaves in the morning.

Baron Validar -

Validar greets all of the Guardians when he arrives at the Great Hall of Karn's Keep.

Chareos and Argent:
Upon seeing Validar and his lady beside him Chareos slowly approaches, extending his hand. “It seems congratulations are in order, Baron.” He says with a bow of respect.

"Thank you most kindly, my friend. And I see that you all succeeded in the assault on the Cold Maiden's citadel," Validar responds, returning the handshake.

“Yes, congratulations are in order,” Argent adds to Baron Validar. “We’ll have a matter to discuss in the future. We’re thinking of acquiring some property on the outskirts of Elcadan, much like Jallarzi has to use as our personal residence. But that is nothing that needs to be done soon.”

"It is certainly a proud moment in my life to have attained the rule of my family's territory. I only hope to be as good a baron as my father has been for Pyris."

"As for property, I do not think that would be a problem. There are bound to be several estates that are confiscated in the re-claiming of Elcadan's territories. And even if there are not, there are many open areas that could be claimed and settled as you desire." At that moment, Validar catches Argent use of the words 'WE' and 'OUR'. Interesting, apparently, some romance has brewed since Validar has seen the rest of the Guardians.

"It will be some time before the duchy is stable again, but your assistance in such will assure each, or both, of you what you would desire."

"Ah, yes, I forgot that most of you had not as yet been introduced to the Lady Allonica." Turning to his lady, Validar says, "Gabriella, may I introduce the fighter-mage Lord Chareos. He has been with us since the attack upon my father." Seeing Argent right behind, Validar continues. "And this is the lovely Lady Argent. She is an Invoker of no small power."

To his teammates, he will then say,"My lady is known as Lady Gabriella Allonica. She is a member of the Lords Council, advisor and negotiator for the King. Lady Gabriella will be accompanying us on our march on Elcadan."

Turning back to Baron Validar, “I have not forgotten of your lessons; the answer still eludes me.”

"Indeed. As I said before, it took me several weeks to come up with the answer. When you have it, please do let me know of it," Validar says with an easy smile.

"We will be leaving for Pyris, the morning after next, so please be comfortable and enjoy yourselves, for we have much work ahead of us."

As Chareos and Argent step away toward Lord Sharadin, Validar whispers to his lady. "I had no idea that the two of them had an interest in each other. It must have happened at Fort Fletcher," he says softly. "Interesting...."

About that moment, another Guardian approaches.

Sherra:
At an opportune moment, Sherra will approach Validar, smiling all the while.

Validar is not sure why Sherra has such a mischievious grin playing about her face as she approaches. "Good to see you, Sherra."

"Well met once again, Baron. I suppose I should congratulate you on both your new title and success in your quest. It is good to see you are well."

Validar plays his friend's words about in his head and he is fairly certain that he understands her euphamism as well. He cannot help but smile wryly at the comment as he galnces to Gabriella briefly.

"The same goes for you and the rest of the Guardians. Our combat was quite challenging, but in the end we were victorious. Surely, this is a great day for Cynalon."

Sherra will smile at the woman pleasantly while awaiting introductions, and can only wonder what the sight of her, decked out in all black leather and bristling with weapons, is causing that same woman to think.

"Gabriella, may I introduce Lady Sherra. She has been a trusted member of the Guardians since their inception," he says. "And should we have the need for a privateer commander, she would come highly recommended by me," he says playfully.

"Sherra, this is Lady Gabriella Allonica," Validar will continue, indicating his lady by his side. "I do not know how much of the news you have heard, but it seems that the rebellion in Elcadan we once spoke about is no longer necessary. Still there is much work to do in the claiming of the lands. I am certain that your skills will be quite useful in those tasks."

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Yusef:
Validar searches for Yusef some time later and begins to ask him about the Deville estate that they may be hiding at since fleeing Elcadan. Validar is surprised to see that Yusef does not seem himself.

"I was wondering more about the layout and the defenses than the opulence, my friend. But more to the point, you seem to be bothered greatly. Sir Corley mentioned that you had plans to approach the King regarding your ties to the Deville clan. I admire your honor in doing so, although I might have recommended that you do so after we have destroyed them and their vile stain. If you would like to have me stand in on your behalf, I would do so."

Sir Corley:
“Me?” Sir Corley answers in mild surprise. “I will not inherent any lands unless I should become the betrothed on a baroness.”

Validar pats his powerful friend on his shoulder. "Ah, my good man, Sir Corley. You underestimate both yourself and the situation that the Kingdom is undergoing. With Elcadan about to be reborn, there will be plenty of opportunities to rule, if you should desire it." Validar pauses for the briefest of moments. "And surely, becoming betrothed to a baroness is not a terrible situation to find oneself in, either, wouldn't you say?"

“Indeed, we believe that the Cold Maiden’s grasp on this world is even less know. That can only mean good things for us a less future danger for the fair Kharyna.”

"That idea warms my heart as much as it will warm our lands. The Cold Maiden is a nuisance and a distraction that we do not need at this time. I am pleased that you dealt with her so satisfactorily."

"And as for the fair Kharyna, that is one good note, but another seems to dog her heels. The Inquisitor Serena has indicated that there are many Alphatians who wish to see the Towers of Magic claimed by one of their own. I consider this a travesty to Cynalon as well as a danger to our friend. At some point, we must warn her. Worse, should the Alphatians succeed in claiming the Tower, they would have claim to a portion of our own beloved Kingdom and that can never happen."

"I am afraid that with all the enemies we have already, we could gain another in the Alphatians. At any rate they are not likely to enjoy the gains that Cynalon has made and will continue to make, especially if we start to procure more of the old Keln lands. Who knows, you may be much more than a baron when this is all finished!"

“I could not, in good conscious, slay an enemy that had already surrendered, as you well know, my friend. To do so would only lower us to the standards of our enemies. Nay, we must strive to be better than those we fight! To do otherwise is unthinkable.”

"Yes, I agree. Slay no, but rehabilitation is a difficult thing. And with their demonic heritage, I would question the sincerity of their changes. So, as I said, it is good that the dragons will preside over this 'rehabilitation'. I wish them well and if not, surely Silvarn's kind has the power to deal with any transgressions or subterfuge."

"Where is this location that they may have fled to?"

“Yusef did not speak further on the subject beyond what I have already told you.”

"Very well, I will approach him later this evening, when everything has settled down a bit."

"That was not the full reason, but I think it was a function of circumstances rather than plan. The plan was for the Guardians to assist in the reclamation of Elcadan, and to help hunt down the demons that they have cavorted with for so long. In truth, hunting down the Deville’s will accomplish that to a degree and more."

“It was my understanding that the demons who held Elcadan and the Deville family was one and the same. Or do you suspect there are others beyond that foul family?”

"I have no proof that there is more demonic assistance than that of the Deville family. However, we cannot assume that it ends with them. Demons are an insidious and evil bunch. If they had the opportunity to cavort on this plane in working with the Deville's, there is always the possibility that there are other families which have done the same, allies of the vile scum. Or there is the possibility that one or more of the demons managed their freedom. As we have seen, they seem to be able to bring more of their own kind to this plane when given their own choice."

"I have no predispositions to what we are going to face in reclaiming Elcadan and expect the very worst. In that way, we will be prepared for any and all eventualities."

“Yes, he, Lady Aria, and Farian did remain at Fort Fletcher to carryout their mission for the Dwarven Lords. They were joined by Oran Firehammer, so I cannot help be optimistic about their future success. Plus their presence will help defend Fort Fletcher should they be attacked again, although at this point I believe the fort will be safe at least until the orcs have recovered from their recent setbacks."

"I would expect the orcs and the other humanoids to try and make another attack in the spring, if they are properly lead and another horde can be reassembled." Validar shakes his head for a moment and sighs. "We seem to be unable to finish one task before another three raise their vile heads. We have managed to eliminate a few enemies and more are awaiting their turn to attack us. It is like fighting a hydra."

"It would be best if we could mount an assault on the humanoids in their own territory and drive them from the border lands. I fear, however, that we may not have Stone Ridge recovered by the time we are seeing another cloud on the horizon. But for now, we must accomplish all that we can. Each victory won is further safety for the Kingdom."

"We have much to do and little time. Still it is imperative that we approach one task at a time. It is fortunate we have a large collection of allies at our disposal. I will be relying on your skill and your leadership to help succeed in all that we face."

“Very Good. We’ll talk more tomorrow.”

"Indeed." Validar will shake hands with the knight once more, as they part company.

"I-I am," Yusef admits. "I have never been around so many nobles. Worse still, I have no knowledge of this new king, and no idea how he may react to my lineage when he becomes aware of me. If you would be willing to attend, I would appreciate the support greatly.

"As for the estate, I was young the last time I visited. However, I do recall it having a wall and guards, though it seemed more designed for pleasure than defense. Admittedly, much could have changed in the intervening years."
King Victor wrote:“So I have been told,” the King states calmly. “Can you elaborate further? "My mother, Nerita bint Falawi Al-Rashid, is a direct descendent of Rashid al-Khalil. She was kidnapped while on a trip and sold to the Devilles as a slave. My father, Daniel Deville used her for his own pleasure, as is the way of the Devilles. Out of that union, I was born and became a slave as well, though the family introduced me to some of their lifestyle as well. But I fled when the opportunity arose rather than become like them." There is pride in his voice when Yusef speaks of his mother, but a vacant absense of emotion when speaking of the Devilles and his life with them.

"I would gladly give my life to free my mother and send her home to our people. Any additional vengeance I can wreak on her captors would please me greatly," Yusef concludes, fierce anticipation in his eyes.

Chareos
Hearing the Items from the Ice Palace raid have been identified, Chareos looks over the items with interest, The Staff of Power catches his eye but knowing his place within the Guardians passes over it. “The Frostbrand Longsword would be my pick of items.” Knowing his weapons are meant to defend more than attack.

(He will put the broadsword into reserve, buy Longsword Prof. If any remaining points are left, put towards Tactics of Magic.)
“It was quite a find,” Argent agrees. “Lord Sharadin has done much cleaning since the day I first was here with the Company of the Sword. We spent much time investigating this mammoth structure.”
“Was there anything of interest found here or history, besides that of the mage guild’s wealth?” he asks curiously.

"Who was this Sorceress?" he asked as he took Argent’s hand; he allows her to lead the way into the smaller of the towers. “Do I least get a hint?” he jokes playfully as she leads them into a mage lab. Looking about the mage lab and quarters Chareos can’t help but wonder just how powerful this sorceress was, not to mention wealthy to house her own lab.
Argent continues to lead the way to the top most level of this tower. The quarters here are luxurious and richly furnished in thick velvets and comfortable fabrics.

“This is typically where I stay while at the Karn’s Keep”, Argent explains. “But this is not the best part.”
“It is quite beautiful. I can see how one could get used to such delicacies,” he says as his eyes float across the lavish furniture and rich decoration. Feeling a bit out of place due to his humble upbringing Chareos continues to follow Argent up to a higher part in the keep.

Leading Chareos on, Argent leads him up to the huge windows the look out into the surrounding mountains. This level is 120’ above the ground and the view is magnificent.

“Wondrous is it not? Not to mention romantic as well.”
Chareos takes his time and looks about the wide open skies above to the rich forests and mountains. His mouth drops open slightly as a smile slowly etches across his face. “It truly is magnificent,” he says coming up behind her and wrapping his arms about her as a chilling wind swept past them. “I only wish I knew so I could arrange a basket of food.” He says as he gently takes her hand in his. “Thank you, for showing me such treasures, though the only treasure I seek is right before my very eyes.” He gazed into her eyes and soon leaned down gently kissing her. .

A little later, “How is it that you know so much of this place?” he asks curiously.

Validar

"Thank you most kindly, my friend. And I see that you all succeeded in the assault on the Cold Maiden's citadel," Validar responds, returning the handshake.
“It was a challenge to say the very least. Two of the Ice priestesses were captured, tied and gagged and left behind. When the Demon fled she went to retrieve her children. It was then not one enemy we faced but three. It proved challenging as many of our weapons were not effective against the Ice demon, but in the end we overcame it.”

"It is certainly a proud moment in my life to have attained the rule of my family's territory. I only hope to be as good a baron as my father has been for Pyris."
“I wish your rule to be long and fruitful.” He said with a smile, “If your leadership on the battlefield is any indication of your abilities to lead as Baron, Pyris as well as Elcaden will be the finest jewels within the crown.”

"It will be some time before the duchy is stable again, but your assistance in such will assure each, or both, of you what you would desire."
“Now is a time more than ever that the Guardians are needed. You would be hard pressed to keep me away from the fray. The people of Elcadan have suffered greatly, and I will see their suffering come to an end.”

To his teammates, he will then say, "My lady is known as Lady Gabriella Allonica. She is a member of the Lords Council, advisor and negotiator for the King. Lady Gabriella will be accompanying us on our march on Elcadan."
“It is an honor, Lady Allonica,” he says with respect as he listens further to the Baron tell of his companion, one word rings out within his head upon hearing it: My? Chareos soon looks between the apparent couple slightly afraid to speak what he is thinking.

Later on Chareos goes to see Yusef’s hearing; silently he listens to exchange between King and priest. Crossing his arms before him Chareos listens intently and is ready to go to his friend’s defense if the King asks of his thoughts.

Lady Gabriella Allonica:
Baron Validar wrote:"As your reputation proceeds you, you have much to live up to," Validar responds playfully. "I look forward to witnessing you in action."
“Come now,” Gabriella retorts with a smile, “it would not be that exciting to watch. Typically the best results are achieved without the presence of men. They tend to cloud the issue.”
Baron Validar wrote:"There simply may not be any other option.
“That may very well be the case,” Gabriella somberly agrees.
Baron Validar wrote:"Yes, and more than a shame it would be a disservice to a friend. Both are valuable allies as well. While it would always be possible to manage to 'push things' as we would desire them, sometimes one has to adjust to circumstances. Not everything can be changed."
“Yes, that is true, but should Ardelphia be restored, then these two could also become very important in the direction that domain goes. They would be in a position to sway Lady Ardel and whomever she does eventually marry. You should introduce me to Sir Acerion and his betrothed so that I may get to know her better.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Ah, yes, I forgot that most of you had not as yet been introduced to the Lady Allonica." Turning to his lady, Validar says, "Gabriella, may I introduce the fighter-mage Lord Chareos. He has been with us since the attack upon my father." Seeing Argent right behind, Validar continues. "And this is the lovely Lady Argent. She is an Invoker of no small power."
“Very nice to meet you”, Lady Gabriella says in greeting to the two spellcasters. “Unless I am mistaken, you were apprentices of Lord Sharadin and Lady Jallarzi, respectively? Both have spoken highly of you.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Gabriella, may I introduce Lady Sherra. She has been a trusted member of the Guardians since their inception," he says. "And should we have the need for a privateer commander, she would come highly recommended by me," he says playfully.
“Well met, Sherra,” Lady Allonica says with her usual smile. If she finds Sherra’s attire to be unusual, Gabriella makes no note of it. “Very pleased to meet you. It is entirely possible that we will need those with naval skills at some point once Akorros has been liberated. There would be many opportunities with access to Lake Amsorak once more.”

“I cannot say that I ever aspired to rule personally, but I would not shy away from the opportunity either. Alas, I feel my abilities are best served in the field for now rather than settling down to rule. Aye, it would indeed depend on the baroness. I believe I know what you are eluding to, my friend, based on our past conversations. Indeed, I am not opposed to such an outcome, but much remains to be done to see such a thing come to pass.”
Baron Validar wrote:"That idea warms my heart as much as it will warm our lands.

“At least it sounds like we are only dealing with ambitious individuals here, not a unified front. The full weight of Alphatia would not be upon us, I hope. Still, there might be those from that far-off land who would come and who would put selfishness aside and assist the fair Kharyna in her task. That notion cannot be discounted. Regardless, I feel the fair maiden is more than the equal of the task.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Yes, I agree.
“Indeed, I would be unsure how to proceed wisely without Silvarn’s assistance. Given the nature of her people, they can surely control a low ranking priestess or two. Even ones of questionable birth.”
Baron Validar wrote:"I have no proof that there is more demonic assistance than that of the Deville family. However, we cannot assume that it ends with them. Demons are an insidious and evil bunch. If they had the opportunity to cavort on this plane in working with the Deville's, there is always the possibility that there are other families that have done the same, allies of the vile scum.

“Then perhaps it would be wise of us to learn whatever we can about the nature of these demons. What attacks harm them and which have proven to be ineffective. At least understand the power that we are facing rather than charging blindly into battle.”
Baron Validar wrote:"I would expect the orcs and the other humanoids to try and make another attack in the spring, if they are properly lead and another horde can be reassembled." Validar shakes his head for a moment and sighs. "We seem to be unable to finish one task before another three raise their vile heads. We have managed to eliminate a few enemies and more are waiting their turn to attack us.

“Perhaps, at some point, we should take a lesson from our ancestors and dare what the legendary paladin Valen and the Sorceress Elenia did. Go into Vassa and strike at the heart of our ultimate enemy. As many have said, including Lord Sherwood, the prime movers for all our troubles do stem from the Witch-King Zhengyi and his associated liches. Aye, that would be a task for the ages!”
Baron Validar wrote:"We have much to do and little time. Still it is imperative that we approach one task at a time. It is fortunate we have a large collection of allies at our disposal. I will be relying on your skill and your leadership to help succeed in all that we face."
“My sword is always at your disposal, my friend! Let the bards sing of our accomplishments and our foes tremble in fear! There are foes to be fought and the hearts of maidens to be won!”

Argent:
Baron Validar wrote:"As for property, I do not think that would be a problem.

“That is an option I had not considered before,” Argent mulls. “There might already be something there to my liking. If the situation is as you say, then there would be plenty of property. I’ve not had a true home in a long time and wish to have something to call my own. A place to store my belongings and call home.”

“I have spent much time in and around Elcadan during my apprenticeship, so having the city restored does appeal to me. I think this might work out well for all concerned parties.”

To his teammates, he will then say, "My lady is known as Lady Gabriella Allonica. She is a member of the Lords Council, advisor and negotiator for the King. Lady Gabriella will be accompanying us on our march on Elcadan."

“Very nice to meet you”, Lady Gabriella says in greeting to the two spell casters. “Unless I am mistaken, you were apprentices of Lord Sharadin and Lady Jallarzi? Both have spoken highly of you.”
“Well met, Lady Allonica,” Argent responds. “Yes, that is correct. Lady Jallarzi Salavarian tutored me. I thought you looked familiar, Lady Gabriella. My parents are shopkeepers in Crossroads and they regularly deal with the Allonica family for their supplies. I must say, that is a very lovely dress. Do you have a favorite tailor that you might recommend?”
Baron Validar wrote:"We will be leaving for Pyris, the morning after next, so please be comfortable and enjoy yourselves, for we have much work ahead of us."
“Oh, we plan to”, Argent answers with a smile.
Chareos wrote:“Was there anything of interest found here or history, besides that of the mage guild’s wealth?” he asks curiously.
“There’s a great deal of history to this place. It was originally built by giants and has been held by numerous other parties since them. The Lich Queen Varalla held sway here for a time, until she was slain by Victor the second. Later in came into Karn’s position as a gift from Keln himself. The Sword of Doom was believed to be stored here, but at that time no one was quite sure of its true nature. There is also a pillar artifact down in the basement, much like the one that was discovered under Gateway. It is an artifact of the Elders.”
"Who was this Sorceress?" he asked as he took Argent’s hand he allows her to lead the way into the smaller of the towers. “Do I least get a hint?” he jokes playfully as she leads them into a mage lab. Looking about the mage lab and quarters Chareos can’t help but wonder just how powerful this sorceress was, not to mention wealthy to house her own lab.
“Her name was Ashemmi,” Argent answers simply.
Chareos wrote:“It is quite beautiful. I can see how one could get used to such delicacies.” he says as his eyes float across the lavish furniture and rich decoration. Feeling a bit out of place due to his humble upbringing Chareos continues to follow Argent up to a higher part in the keep.
“It’s been the closest thing to home for me as of late. I found Ashemmi’s style to be well matched with my own. Most of my dresses, jewelry, and several magic items were originally hers.”
Chareos takes his time and looks about the wide-open skies above to the rich forests and mountains. His mouth drops open slightly as a smile slowly etches across his face. “It truly is magnificent.” He says coming up behind her and wrapping his arms about her as a shilling wind swept past them. “I only wish I knew so I could arrange a basket of food.” He says as he gently takes her hand in his. “Thank you, for showing me such treasures, though the only treasure I seek is right before my very eyes.” He gazed into her eyes and soon leaned down gently kissing her...

Argent accepts Chareos’s embrace easily enough, her arms overlapping his. It has been a while since she’s enjoyed the company of a man.

“Then do not be afraid to reach out and take it,” Argent answers as she returns the kiss and one thing leads to another.
Chareos wrote:A little later, “How is it that you know so much of this place?” he asks curiously.
“I was the most scholarly among the Company of the Sword, so the task of researching the libraries of this keep feel to me. In addition to the mage library, Lord Karn kept a sizable library of his own in his private study.

“I was also possessed by Ashemmi’s spirit at one point,’ Argent explains, turning to face Chareos. “We found a large gem in the lab down below and learned that it was a repository for a Magic Jar spell. At some point Asheemi’s spirit entered the gem and she took possession of my body. My companies soon realized that something was wrong and they captured me. Ashemmi’s spirit fled back to the gem and it was later shattered. It was during her possession was when she dressed me in the jewels and magic items I mentioned earlier.”

“After the Company of the Sword joined forces with the Seekers, I remained behind. Lord Sharadin had a task for me to further research the Pillar Artifact down in the basement. But there was an accident and the project was abandoned. It was not long after that I joined the Guardians.”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Yusef:
"I-I am," Yusef admits. "I have never been around so many nobles. Worse still, I have no knowledge of this new king, and no idea how he may react to my lineage when he becomes aware of me. If you would be willing to attend, I would appreciate the support greatly."

"I am certain that I can find the time for a teammate and an ally," Validar says. Validar is also curious how the King will react to such a situation. It will give him a chance to see the King in action.

"As for the estate, I was young the last time I visited. However, I do recall it having a wall and guards, though it seemed more designed for pleasure than defense. Admittedly, much could have changed in the intervening years."

"Perhaps so, although my initial guess would be that overconfidence likely led them to think it was a safe haven and that little more has been done. In any case, we should be careful, as thy may have always been traps for the unwary."

Yusef's Audience with the King:
Validar will listen to the comments between the priest and our King. Yusef is clearly nervous at the beginning, but his fire to get back at the Devilles rises up in him and Validar sees a fire in his eyes. Validar awaits the King's next comments.

Chareos:
“It was a challenge to say the very least. Two of the Ice priestesses were captured, tied and gagged and left behind. When the Demon fled she went to retrieve her children. It was then not one enemy we faced but three. It proved challenging as many of our weapons were not effective against the Ice demon, but in the end we overcame it.”

"A rousing victory then. Each demon we remove from this plane makes it a safer place for all Cynalonians."

“I wish your rule to be long and fruitful.” He said with a smile, “If your leadership on the battlefield is any indication of your abilities to lead as Baron, Pyris as well as Elcaden will be the finest jewels within the crown.”

"You are too kind, my friend. My experience on the battlefield is much greater than that in the political arena, although my passion for ruling my people well is matched by my passion in my martial skills."

“Now is a time more than ever that the Guardians are needed. You would be hard pressed to keep me away from the fray. The people of Elcadan have suffered greatly, and I will see their suffering come to an end.”

"I appreciate both your loyalty to the cause and your courage and dedication. It is that attitude that will see Cynalon achieve greatness once more."

Argent:
“That is an option I had not considered before,” Argent mulls. “There might already be something there to my liking. If the situation is as you say, then there would be plenty of property. I’ve not had a true home in a long time and wish to have something to call my own. A place to store my belongings and call home.”

"Yes, the call for a place of one's own is strong indeed. Even the most dedicated wandered wishes to have a place to settle eventually. I cannot say what the situation will be exactly, but I am certain that the transition to the new Duke's rule will not go seamlessly. There should be several options when the dust settles."

“I have spent much time in and around Elcadan during my apprenticeship, so having the city restored does appeal to me. I think this might work out well for all concerned parties.”

"Indeed. We have many connections to Elcadan in the Guardians. With te continued dedication and efforts of this group, her people will benefit greatly from our actions," Validar says, "as will we."

Lyonessa:

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but these bracers worn by Kalandor are better than the ones you currently have? Perhaps you should upgrade your protection, Lyonessa?”

Lyonessa will think on that for a moment, "You know Argent, you probably are right on that." Since it doesn't seem anyone else wanted them, Lyonessa will take the bracers.

Lyonessa:

“Well met, fellow priestess. I am Serena, an Inquisitor in the service of the Lady of Mysteries. May I inquire as to who you are?”

"An inquisitor? Really?" Lyonessa asks, having never heard of such a force used by Mystra. "I am Lyonessa, a songstress of Mystra. I must say that an inquisitor sounds very intimidating."

"Well thank you Serena," Lyonessa says as she smiles at the compliment. "I plan to travel to as many lands and experience as many cultures as I possibly can. New places are always exciting and finding people that would enjoy a good song or ballad is always a boon."

Lyonessa wouldn't mind the fame, and even wealth has its appeal, but many suitors isn't what she would be after. Her thoughts drift once more to Laucian and her heart begins to ache a little.

“A pleasure to meet you, Songstress. I take it that you sing your magicks instead of casting them like everyone else then?”

“Only those who use the Ladies Gifts in evil or perverse ways have anything to fear from me,” Serena explains. “Those such as myself are unknown in your lands, as the faith of our Lady of Mysteries is not as widespread here as in back my home. In Alphatia, Mystra is revered above all other gods. Every sizable town or village has a temple and the larger cities multiple ones. The Empire was built upon magical might. Any who can make use of the Ladies Gifts are automatically considered nobles of the realm. Because of the sheer number of spell casters there, it is necessary for those like to me to keep order among the faithful. Thus such militant fractions of the church are needed. While I am too a Priestess, I am also considered a Knight of the Church.”
"Well thank you Serena," Lyonessa says as she smiles at the compliment. "I plan to travel to as many lands and experience as many cultures as I possibly can. New places are always exciting and finding people that would enjoy a good song or ballad is always a boon."
“Perhaps one day I can take you to see my homeland. There are Temples to Mystra there that are over a thousand years old. They grand places built to the glory of the Lady of Mysteries. Magic is a common, everyday occurrence among my people. There are artists who use magic to great wondrous works of art for instance. It is a very different place than these lands. But different can be a very refreshing thing.”

Sherra:
"Gabriella, may I introduce Lady Sherra. She has been a trusted member of the Guardians since their inception," he says. "And should we have the need for a privateer commander, she would come highly recommended by me," he says playfully.

"Sherra, this is Lady Gabriella Allonica," Validar will continue, indicating his lady by his side. "I do not know how much of the news you have heard, but it seems that the rebellion in Elcadan we once spoke about is no longer necessary. Still there is much work to do in the claiming of the lands. I am certain that your skills will be quite useful in those tasks."
Sherra simply smiles at Validar's playfulness. She's decided to behave in front of his lady, thankfully for him. The rest of the information is quite useful however.

"You've always known that I'll help you in every way I can Validar," she says. "I'm looking forward to feeling useful again anyway considering in our recent engagement against the ice priestesses I was all but useless at the end."
"A pleasure to meet you as well," Sherra responds. "It would be good to have the feel of a sturdy ship beneath these feet sometime in the future. Maybe a small fleet of them..." she adds the last with a telling smile.
Serena goes to greet the woman in black leather. “Well met, I am Serena of Mystra. Are you a Luckbringer?”
"Well met, Serena of Mystra. I am Sherra," she responds. "Actually I tend to make my own luck," she says to the question. "Although I know well enough to pay my respects when I have an opportunity to do so."

"You may be right, though I know that some of the demons they deal with can be fiendishly clever. We should probably not take too much for granted. And they may have defenders that are even less human than they."

Even as he is meeting with the king, Yusef is heartened to see many of his companions in attendance, though even that adds to his nervousness in some ways.
