New Frontiers #87

All is quiet now in the Ice Palace. Mina has been banished and her half-human daughters captured easily enough. Anja seems the more receptive of the two and has paid the price for her curiosity. She has been cast out by Auril and for the first time in her life knows what it means to be cold.
“Your former patron knows that she no longer has a hold over you,” Ivy says, correcting Nina’s statement. “She knows that you have seen the truth and will not follow her evil ways. This is not weakness, but rather personal strength. As for what you are feeling, that is what we all feel here. That is what it is like to be cold, to have the warmth of your body drained away. Come, you’ve lived in cold for far too long. Now feel what warmth is like.”

Ivy will escort Anja over to Argent’s spell and take her inside. Once inside, Ivy will cast another Cure Light Wounds to heal the damage Auril did to Anja.
Still stunned by what has transpired, Anja is easily led to the Tiny Hut Argent has set up. Once inside, she quickly warms up and is comfortable once more. Anja openly weeps for a time over what she’s lost.
Grondar catches the tail end of the conversation with the demon-girl and her rejection by her patron. Sympathy fills his eyes as he regards the girl. "I know that this rejection is painful to you, and I know that you will come through it a stronger person in the long run.

"Like Ivy and Lyonessa here, I too am a priest. I serve a dwarven goddess named Berronar Truesilver who represents protection and family within the dwarven community. If I can do anything to help you through this time, please let me know."
“So many gods,” Anja marvels at Grondar’s words. “So much that I never knew.”
"I am a priestess and a bard," Lyonessa replies. "I follow the teachings of Mystra and act as a songstress, teacher and healer."
“Yet another goddess! I was led to believe that there were no others beyond her. Everyone I was told seems to be wrong.”
"She hadn't forsaken anyone, let alone her goddess," Lyonessa retorts. "Instead she was merely open to learning and interested in more than the narrow tomb of existence that the goddess of cold allowed her. It seemed rather that someone was frightened at Anja learning the truth."

Helping steady Anja, Lyonessa tries to comfort the scared and confused girl. "You are now free to make your own path," Lyonessa explains. "You can take any route you wish to and learn about anything you want."

Lyonessa smiles at Anja, "You are very strong no matter what your sister says. Do not let fear consume your soul as it does your sister. There is so much I, we, can show you if you wish."
Wiping her tears away, Anja will say, “You would do that for me? You’re all so kind to one who was just your enemy. I don’t know what to say. There is much that I would like to learn. So much that I want to make up for.”

"I think I know what you mean," Yusef replies with a nod. "Like you, I have some of the blood of the lower planes flowing though my veins. One of my parents came from a long line of people who had intermingled with demons and devils for many generations. Thus, some of that was passed on to me. I need to go search the castle for a little while, but we should talk more later."
Anja nods her understanding and answers with, “Okay.”

An attempt is made to start a cooking fire, but no fuel can be rounded up. So instead, a cold meal is made. It is bearable inside the Tiny Hut with coats on, at least compared to the outside.

Elsewhere in the Ice Palace, Sherra and Yusef are exploring. The pair started with Mina’s chambers and discovered a gruesome sight of orcs placed into pillars of ice and tortured. Yusef examines closer to see if any of the creatures are still living. None are, having either perished from their wounds or the bitter cold.

Sherra locates a chest containing a collection of gems. The chest appears to be free from traps, but it is frozen into the icy floor. The contents are easily transferred into waiting sacks.

About eight hours later, the large double doors leading to the outside suddenly open! A blast of wind and snow floods the area, but the guards can quickly determine that the new arrival is an elf maiden who is not dressed for the local conditions. Silvarn has returned!

“I am pleased to see that you’re all still with us,” Silvarn notes as she takes in the surroundings. Her eyes lock in on the Heart of Winter and the two half-human girls. “It seems that you have quite a tale to share.”

Chareos

Making his way about the lower floor Chareos listens to the exchange of the priests and half demon. He is extremely surprised as Anja casts her symbol away in pain. Shaking his head he realizes just how narrow minded some patrons wish to have their followers. He can’t imagine people as such, but the proof lay before him in a shining light so to speak.

After a time he takes his leave entering the warmth of Argent’s spell, even with his coat wrapped tightly about him Chareos still felt a tinge of the cold but managed it well enough. Sitting near Argent, “How are you holding up?” he asks knowing full well she can’t leave the hut. “I think I have seen enough snow and ice to last a lifetime.” He says with chuckle, “But I can’t help but wonder, where our travels will take us next.” Taking some of the cold food he absently eats it.

Later on, while stretching his legs outside the hut, the double doors swing open with a mighty blast of cold air, snow billowing in upon its wake. Gathering his cloak about him and readying his staff, Chareos can only think now what? Within moments those whom are guarding realize it is Silvarn.
“I am pleased to see that you’re all still with us,” Silvarn notes as she takes in the surroundings. Her eyes lock in on the Heart of Winter and the two half-human girls. “It seems that you have quite a tale to share.”
“It is good to see you well, Silvarn.” he says with a bow in respect, then leans on his staff, "It has been interesting at the very least. May I get you anything before we weave our tale?"

Sir Corley:

The rest of the day drags on slowly for the Knight. He can only wait until their transportation from this nightmarish place arrives. But that all depends on how long and how successful the others were with their raid on the Hextor Temple. Waiting like this is not pleasant.

Corley is surprised at the sudden expulsion of Anja from the Cold One’s faith. What a fickle, evil goddess! The Knight can’t help but feel a twinge of sympathy for the young girl whose entire world has just been radically changed forever.

Finally the long wait comes to an end.
“I am pleased to see that you’re all still with us,” Silvarn notes as she takes in the surroundings. Her eyes lock in on the Heart of Winter and the two half-human girls. “It seems that you have quite a tale to share.”
“Lady Silvarn! I am pleased that you grace us with your presence! Yes, indeed there is a tale to be told. The High Priestess of this place was actually an Ice Devil in disguise. The maidens before you were her half-human offspring. We managed to defeat the Ice Devil and capture her children. Since then it appears that one of them, Anja, was cast out by her former patron for questioning too many things. We were unsure how to proceed concerning the Heart of Winter, since it being an artifact it might be beyond our ability to damage. Have you any knowledge on just who to destroy this evil artifact?”

“We are also most eager to depart this dismal place, at your convenience Lady Silvarn. I assume by your presence that the other mission met with victory?"

Argent:
Grondar wrote:"Of course, I'd rather destroy it utterly, so that it can never be used again, but if we cannot find a way to do that, then this may be our best option."
“In that we are in agreement, Grondar,” Argent states. “I’d chuck the thing into the Plane of Elemental Fire if I could. I know from Kharyna that the Cold One lost much power in this world after Everwinter became Neverwinter. I can’t help but wonder if our actions here today will only further weaken her grasp on this world. That would make this victory all the more complete.”

Argent tries to relax inside the Tiny Hut, but finds it difficult. The melodrama over Anja can’t help but noticed and then later Lyonessa begins to sing, as is per her nature. The songs are distracting from her studies, but Argent doesn’t overly mind. The word of Mystra is important to the Invoker and in time she’ll just put the spellbook back into her sack.
Chareos wrote:After a time he takes his leave entering the warmth of Argent’s spell, even with his coat wrapped tightly about him Chareos still felt a tinge of the cold but managed it well enough. “Well, you finally remembered me,” Argent notes as Chareos settles in beside her. “I am well. The boots I liberated from the orcs provide me with plenty of warmth, so at the very least I am not cold. Yes, I have had quite enough of winter to last me several years. When I do settle down it will be somewhere where such things are not an issue! As for what is next, I cannot say. I just hope that it is warmer and far more civilized then Fort Fletcher.”

As the day drags on, Argent becomes more and more concerned that her spell is going to expire before our rescue comes. Should that happen then our island of warmth in this cold and desolate place would be gone. But none of that comes to pass as Silvarn returns. The others go to great the Silver Dragon in elfin form, while Argent gathers her belongings. Once we are ready to depart, Argent will leave the Tiny Hut ending the spell.
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Ivy:

Chareos wrote:"So be it." he says with a nod, though a sudden thought comes to him. "Would any harm come to us if we remove the altar now? Seeing how the diamond is floating above it perhaps it is drawing some power from the altar itself."

If Ivy is certain of no harm will befall them, Chareos will take his broadsword and proceed to smash the altar into ice cubes.
“I cannot be certain, Chareos,” Ivy answers. “There are priestly magicks that can be worked upon altars for a variety of a affects. I think that Sir Corley is correct. We should just leave it alone for now. Knowing the cruel nature of this goddess, I wouldn’t but it past her to place traps on her own altars.”
Lyonessa will touch Ivy's arm before she leads Anja away. She will smile and softly say, "Thank you."
Ivy turns upon feeling the touch on her arm. “You’re welcome,” Ivy answers, returning the smile. “But I did nothing that you wouldn’t have done yourself. Kindness and compassion are among the teachings of many gods. I still cannot help but wonder what is to become of these two? Whatever their path may be, it will not be an easy one. But come, we have a frightened girl to comfort.
Still stunned by what has transpired, Anja is easily led to the Tiny Hut Argent has set up. Once inside, she quickly warms up and is comfortable once more. Anja openly weeps for a time over what she’s lost.
Ivy will settle into the Tiny Hut with the frightened Anja. Ivy will hold the girl if she permits and will say encouraging things to her. Having grown up taking care of numerous children at the orphanage, Ivy is well suited for this task.
Wiping her tears away, Anja will say, “You would do that for me? You’re all so kind to one who was just your enemy. I don’t know what to say. There is much that I would like to learn. So much that I want to make up for.”
“You’re not our enemy,” Ivy corrects. “You’re just someone who finally saw the truth and acted upon it. Those of my faith hold life to be sacred. I could not harm you even if I wished it, and I do not.”

Much later Silvarn arrives. “Our way home is here,” Ivy tells Anja. “That is Silvarn and treat her with great respect.”

Aria:
Grondar wrote:"Indeed. And I'm sure you'll have many more opportunities to engage powerful opponents in the future."
“Now there’s a mixed blessing,” Aria laughs. “Actually hoping to encounter more devils in the future!”

“It’ll be good to get back to our own quest, now that this Ice Goddess has been dealt with. The reclamation of Hammerfall lies before us! I could really use some dwarven ale right about now.”

Eventually Aria becomes bored enough that she slips into sleep and begins to snore loudly. She’ll have to be awakened with Silvarn turns up.

“Huh? What? Oh, it’s about time! Let’s get a move on!”

Grondar glances over at Anja before turning back to Argent. "I believe we can be assured of that. We may yet encounter her again in the future, but it will take her time to marshall her forces once again. And we will be ready for her if that day arrives."
Anja wrote:“So many gods,” Anja marvels at Grondar’s words. “So much that I never knew.”
"Aye, Anja, that there are; in fact, there are literally dozens. And you now have the opportunity to decide for yourself which are worthy of your veneration."

The gems are soon dealt with and the explorers are ready to travel once again.

"Shall we look in on the quarters of that other priestess, Sherra?" Yusef asks. "What was her name - Kalindor, or something like that?"

Of course, if they see any other areas that look interesting along the way, they'll check it out.

"I think that would be our next best bet," Sherra agrees after they have emptied the chest, "and yes I believe that was her name."

Sherra will head to the other priestess' room taking the same caution as she had with the ice devil's room. She isn't sure if the other priestess was human or not, but no sense in taking any chances.

Farian

With the cold beginning to get to him Farian excuses himself from Sir Corley and enters the hut, where he catches the remnants of Grondar and Aria’s conversation.

‘Aye it will be. I have seen enough of this cold, it will be good to get beneath ground. Sadly I have none’. He says with a rueful smile.

Having heard news of Silvarn arrival Farian goes to wake Aria as he draws closer, the noise is quite loud. Drawing nearer he sees Aria snoring quite loudly a pool of drool collecting down her cheek. Rolling his eyes, Farian walks up and begins to nudghe her leg with his foot “Aria!” with no avail, “Aria!!! Wake up.”
“Huh? What? Oh, it’s about time! Let’s get a move on!”
“Now’s not the time for beauty sleep. Silvarn has arrived!”

I have thought of taking on my families business though it has been sometime since I have worked with horses.”

Most of the Guardians are relaxing in Argent’s Tiny Hut or keeping an eye on Anja and Nina to pass the time. Anja has been violently cast out of the Aurilian faith and is comforted by Ivy, Lyonessa, and Grondar. Anja weeps for a time while Ivy tries to console her.
“You’re not our enemy,” Ivy corrects. “You’re just someone who finally saw the truth and acted upon it. Those of my faith hold life to be sacred. I could not harm you even if I wished it, and I do not.”
Anja simply nods at Ivy’s words, but does seem more content. “Holding all life to be sacred is very noble. Your patron seems much nicer then mine—my former one.”
Grondar wrote:"Aye, Anja, that there are; in fact, there are literally dozens. And you now have the opportunity to decide for yourself which are worthy of your veneration."
“But would any other power have me? After being cast out from everything that I knew? How could anyone trust me?”
"We will help you in any way we can, Anja," Grondar says. "And we will also help your sister as much as she will allow."

Grondar turns to Nina. "And what about you, Nina? While we cannot support the Cold One's agenda, I would like to help you in some fashion."
“Then leave me be, dwarf,” Nina answers tersely. “I have no need for your help or sympathy. Unlike my disgraced sister, I remain strong in my faith.”

Elsewhere in the Ice Palace, Sherra and Yusef have departed Mina’s chambers and have gone down one level to the former quarters of Kalandor, the Ice Sorceress. Kalandor’s body lies where it was left in the hallway around her chambers. Blood has pooled about the body and has frozen solid. Argent earlier stripped the body of its valuables.

There are four doors in this hallway, much like the chambers above. The pair cautiously examines the doors but do not find any traps placed upon them, but Sherra does not the presence of magical energy on each door. Sherra goes to open the first door but finds that it refuses to open, as if it is locked. All four doors are closed in this manner.

Later that day, Silvarn returns.
Chareos wrote:“It is good to see you well, Silvarn.” he says with a bow in respect, then leans on his staff, "It has been interesting at the very least. May I get you anything before we weave our tale?"
“I am fine, thank you for asking.”

“Well, this is interesting,” Silvarn notes. “An Ice Devil serving the Cold Maiden? This is the first that I’ve ever heard of such a thing. You did well to defeat such a monster.”

“But to answer your other question, yes the rescue mission was successful. Your comrades are all safe and the Duke of Corunglain and his family recovered. Hextor was dealt a major blow this day. I was tasked to retrieve all of you and take you to Fort Fletcher so that the dwarves can depart on their own mission, pick up Baron Validar’s retainers and your mounts and then transport you all to Pyris. However, I just remembered that Yusef requested that I take him to have an audience with the King. Therefore, it seems logical to just take you all to Karn’s Keep as that is where the King is now and your comrades are there too. You can all then journey to Pyris from there. As for the rest of the details on their mission, your comrades can fill you in when you see them.”
A bright smile lights Grondar's craggy features at the appearance of Silvarn. "Thank you for coming, Silvarn. It is a pleasure to see you. Sir Corley asks a good question; any information you may have would be of great help. Also, if you have any thoughts on how to destroy the altar above which it floats, that too would be appreciated."
“Yes, I do,” Silvarn reports. “Given that my people and the Aurilians share a common trait of preferring cold climes we have often come into conflict with their kind. We can help the sisters overcome the drivel they were raised upon, with your permission of course. I can take them to a place where my people will help them adjust back into normal society.”

“As for this artifact, yes it was probably wise to leave it alone. From the looks if it, the artifact was being used to alter the properties of regular magic items and turning them into cold-based versions. Most likely once they are removed from the altar the effect will stop and they’ll slowly go back to being normal magic items. They should be safe for your use.”

“The Heart of Winter is a different matter. I’m not sure what the proper method to destroy it is, but I am sure that those among my people who regularly deal with the Cold One’s followers will. I’ll just take it with me when I take the sisters to them.”

“Oh, where are my manners?” Silvarn suddenly wonders.

The elf maiden produces the Stone House and sets it down on the ground. She utters the command word and the door appears out of nowhere. A dwarven warrior in dwarven plate armor strides forth.

“By the gods this cold is bitter!” The dwarf grumbles loudly. Spotting Aria amongst the group, the warrior steps up to her.

“Hail Lady Aria! I am Oran Firehammer, a former associate of the late Drakkimor. I have learned of your quest to retake Hammerfall and I’ve come to offer my hammer to the task. Will you have me?”

“If you are ready to depart, then go inside,” Silvarn states. “Once you are inside, I’ll grab the Heart of Winter and we’ll be away from this place.”

GM Notes

GM Notes:

Historically I’ve been pretty good about the timing of having games diverge and remerge, but it hasn’t worked out as planned this time out. Essentially, the events shown in Cynalon Knights are ready to merge back in with New Frontiers, but the Guardians are not quite there yet.

But there is a solution to this problem instead of having the CK group sit around twiddling their thumbs. The current events will continue to unfold in New Frontiers until their natural resolution. But, the Guardians will arrive at Karn’s Keep in the next Cynalon Knights update. This event is only a few hours away in the Guardians timeline.

The gist of what will happen between then and now is that the Guardians leave the Ice Palace, stop over at Fort Fletcher, and then arrive at Karn’s Keep. At Fort Fletcher the dwarves will depart on their quest to liberate Hammerfall, while Arocken, Po, and the groups mounts will move on to Karn’s Keep. There will be no combat during this transitional time. Most of this time will be for talking and ironing out issues. Anja and Nina will be with the group when they arrive at Karn’s Keep.

So, to sum up, continue posting in New Frontiers and we’ll be jumping a few hours ahead over in Cynalon Knights beginning with the next update. Got it? Good!

Xp’s for the group has been awarded over in the private area. Also in the private area, anyone who has Thief Abilities will now have them on their character sheet. Those were the real last area of programming I had for the online sheets. Everything else is now just entering and formatting data, so hopefully I’ll be getting more and more sheets finished. Check the area out now and then to check on the progress of your sheet.

The page you'll want to check is the Roster page and there's a link to it on the Welcome Page in the link bar. It'll show how many discretionary Xp's multiclassed characters have and how many CP's you have to spend.

I’ve also have High Level NWP’s lists for Warriors, Wizards, and Thieves up in the private area. These are special class NWP’s that characters of at least 10th level can start to purchase. They are up for your reference and for you to see which ones you plan to buy down the line. The list for Priests will be up ASAP.

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:

The Knight relates what has transpired in the Ice Palace to Silvarn upon her arrival. Lord Chareos and Grondar add their own questions.
“Well, this is interesting,” Silvarn notes. “An Ice Devil serving the Cold Maiden? This is the first that I’ve ever heard of such a thing. You did well to defeat such a monster.”
“We were unprepared for the beast upon our first battle, but we managed to drive it off. Our second engagement went much better and we banished the beast without any serious injury.”

Sir Corley is unsure why the maiden thinks an Ice Devil would serve Auril, but makes no comment on it.
As for the rest of the details on their mission, your comrades can fill you in when you see them.”
“It warms my heart to hear that their mission met with success and that the enemy has been brought to his knees!”

Sir Corley listens to the rest of Silvarn’s itinerary without comment. It appears that we are being summoned away from Fort Fletcher, but will return long enough to retrieve Validar’s henchmen and the mounts.

“Excuse me, did you say Baron Validar? At any rate, I am sure that I speak for all when I say we are eager to be away from this place.”

Sir Corley listens to Silvarn’s explanation with interest. “It seems to me that you are well suited to handle this matter Lady Silvarn. I have no objection to what you propose.”

Sir Corley enters the Stone House and is ready to return to warmer climes.

Argent:
Grondar glances over at Anja before turning back to Argent. "I believe we can be assured of that. We may yet encounter her again in the future, but it will take her time to marshal her forces once again. And we will be ready for her if that day arrives."
“That is good,” Argent agrees. “That’ll also mean that Kharyna will be in less danger now. At least as far as the Cold One is concerned.” Argent is clearly pleased that her friend won’t be hunted as intensely now.
Chareos wrote:"Just because I am not always near does not mean I don't remember you." He said evenly, "I was merely guarding one of the priestess', the last thing I would have wanted to see is for one of them to sneak in and catch you unawares."
“That was a possible danger,” Argent will agree. “But I doubt she would have gotten very far with the force we have assembled here.”
Charoes wrote:Bringing his hands together rubbing them absently. "I'm not sure when I would wish to settle down, but there are several things I would wish to do when the time comes. I have thought of taking on my families business though it has been sometime since I have worked with horses."
“I have given some thought to it as of late myself. I did enjoy my stay at Karn’s Keep as the resources there are unsurpassed in my opinion. Elcadan would be nice once the new ruler cleans it up. Perhaps getting a home there would be advantageous. Plus there are many shops I would wish to visit again. A new wardrobe would be wonderful since I’m no longer a peasant.”

"I have no desire to take over my families business. They ran a shop in Crossroads. I'm a powerful sorceress now. I have no desire to sell pots and pans again."

Argent listens to Silvarn’s theory on the Aurilites magic items. “That makes sense I guess. Convert them to your cause instead of creating new ones. I guess that means the items I took from Kalandor will change as well. I was wondering how they made a staff out of ice!”

Argent’s spirits noticeably perk up when she hears that they’ll be departing for Karn’s Keep! “This is good news! There is much of great interest there for a mage.” Turning to face Lyonessa and Ivy, she’ll add, “There’s are even shrines to your patrons there.”

To Chareos she adds, “There is much there for me to show you, Chareos. This is very exciting!”

Ivy:

Ivy holds on to Anja, comforting her. It feels strange to holding such a large girl like this, but she does seem almost childlike in her views of the world. Being raised the way she was didn’t prepare her for what life was really like.
Anja simply nods at Ivy’s words, but does seem more content. “Holding all life to be sacred is very noble. Your patron seems much nicer then mine—my former one.”
“Most are nicer,” Ivy agrees. “There are those gods who help and protect and those who only desire to cause harm. Azrella is the Patron of Life, save for undead and extra-dimensional creatures and any who prey upon the living. My sisters help the poor and run orphanages. I was raised in such an orphanage myself. I wish I would have known my parents, but I had a happy childhood regardless.”

Ivy will speak more of the teachings of Azrella should Anja seem to want to know more. Perhaps someday she’ll give herself willingly to another patron, one who is worthy of her.

Sir Corley listens to Silvarn’s explanation with interest. “It seems to me that you are well suited to handle this matter Lady Silvarn. I have no objection to what you propose.”
“That does seem like an ideal solution,” Ivy notes, taking a glance at Anja. “But I have my concerns. Where is this place? Anja does not seem to be evil to me at all. I’m not sure if what you suggest would be good for her welfare. Would she be able to return if your people deem her prepared? Would it be possible to see this place and to make sure the Heart is destroyed for good?”

Ivy’s heart leaps when she hears that they will be going to Karn’s Keep, as that is where Sir Acerion is at now. “Yes, let us be off! I am eager to visit this keep.” Soon she’ll be reunited with her love!

Grondar wrote:"I couldn't agree with you more. There is much yet to be done."
“Aye and we’ll accomplish it because we dwarves. We don’t sit around talkin’ about what we’re going to do. We act.”
Farian wrote:'Aye it will be. I have seen enough of this cold; it will be good to get beneath ground. Sadly I have none'. He says with a rueful smile.
“That be true, lad. Having a ceiling of earth and rock overhead is always comforting. As for the ale, there’s plenty back at the fortress. Our thirst will be parched soon enough!”
Farian wrote:"Now's not the time for beauty sleep. Silvarn has arrived!"
“Hurmph!” Aria grunts as she comes around. “I was sleeping the sleep of a warrior, not of some pampered beauty!”

Noting that Silvarn is back, Aria ambles forth. Most of the conversation has little interest to her, but then…
The elf maiden produces the Stone House and sets it down on the ground.

“Well met, Oran Firehammer,” Aria answers as they grasp hands. “Aye, your reputation does precede you! I would be most pleased to have your hammer among us! Allow me to introduce our other companions. This is Grondar, a follower of Berronar Truesilver and Farian Silverpike our scout. The rest await us at Fort Fletcher. Come, let us be away from this horrid cold and warm up with some dwarven ale around a warm fire!”

“That was a possible danger,” Argent will agree. “But I doubt she would have gotten very far with the force we have assembled here.”
“While this is true, It is far better to be safe then sorry.”
“Aye, I have heard tales of Karn’s Keep. Sadly, I have not had a chance to see it with my own eyes nor the treasure it holds. Elcadan is an attractive city as well, though honestly, I would rather purchase a plot of land as Lady Salavarian did, and construct something I could be proud of.” He says with a far off gaze, almost picturing it in his mind’s eye.

“It is not that I wish to take over my family business ,more so, do so as a hobby if you will. There are many fine horses in which I wonder I could breed to get a finer mount and I find it very stress relieving. It also reminds me of home and my family.” He says with a small smile. “Perhaps if we have time we could pick you up a few new dress or trinkets to add to your foundation.”

To Chareos she adds, “There is much there for me to show you, Chareos. This is very exciting!”

“I would like that immensely! I just hope we have time for it all.”

Sherra:
There are four doors in this hallway, much like the chambers above. The pair cautiously examines the doors but do not find any traps placed upon them, but Sherra does not the presence of magical energy on each door.
"I haven't found any traps, but..." Sherra reveals, trying the first door.
Sherra goes to open the first door but finds that it refuses to open, as if it is locked. All four doors are closed in this manner.
"...some sort of magic is keeping the doors held fast." Sherra finishes, frustrated that all the doors are magically barred.

"You wouldn't happen to be able to get us past this inconvience, would you?" Sherra says as she turns to Yusef, her eyes hopeful.

“Aye, Will have to remember to fill our wineskins for our journey!”
“Hurmph!” Aria grunts as she comes around. “I was sleeping the sleep of a warrior, not of some pampered beauty!”
Softly snickering to himself he watches as Aria comes around. “But of course…” he says with a rueful smile.

Noting that Silvarn is back, Aria ambles forth. Most of the conversation has little interest to her, but then…

Walking up to Silvarn she soon issues forth a stone cube which grows in size, revealing a dwarf!!
“Well met, Oran Firehammer,” Aria answers as they grasp hands. “Aye, your reputation does precede you! I would be most pleased to have your hammer among us! Standing idly by he steps forward when his name is called forth. Putting forth his hand in friendship. “Well met, Oran Firehammer. Tis good to have one of your talents amongst our own.”

Lyonessa:

Ivy turns upon feeling the touch on her arm. “You’re welcome,” Ivy answers, returning the smile. “But I did nothing that you wouldn’t have done yourself. Kindness and compassion are among the teachings of many gods. I still cannot help but wonder what is to become of these two? Whatever their path may be, it will not be an easy one. But come, we have a frightened girl to comfort.

"That may be quite true," Lyonessa replies, "but you have made sure I am not doing this by myself."

Thinking a moment, she adds, "It is hard to say what will become of the two of them, but Anja seems the most likely to find a place of peace in her new world. She didn't seem a fighter. Maybe she will become a student and expand her knowledge. There are so many options."

"I could not agree with Ivy more," Lyonessa adds. "You have opened yourself up to so much already, who would we be if we wished to crush that from you? It was what I saw within you that drove me to show you that life isn't restrained to the small portion you have known, the rest you have begun to see on your own."

"Aye, Anja, that there are; in fact, there are literally dozens. And you now have the opportunity to decide for yourself which are worthy of your veneration."

“But would any other power have me? After being cast out from everything that I knew? How could anyone trust me?”

"It may be a long, hard road Anja, but just because one fickle and scared goddess turned her back on you doesn't mean all of the others aren't curious to see what you will do now," Lyonessa explains. "It may take some time, but you might be pleasantly surprised by what you find."

Lyonessa thinks on this for a moment, "That might be good for Nina since she seems completely rooted in her beliefs. Anja, I feel, should have a choice in the matter. She is no longer accepted by the cold goddess and seems to have lost the gifts bestowed by being a follower and priestess. I don't really think she needs to overcome any 'drivel' as you put it, Silvarn."

The news of our departure is definitely good news. Lyonessa can't wait to get out of the cold and be re-united with her other friends. She imagines their task, upon being victorious, will be a tale she will most enjoy hearing. While the last preperations are being made, Lyonessa will begin to compose a ballad in her head about what they have just endured and about Anja and the opportunities that now lay before her.

Grondar smiles as their other dwarven companion returns. "I believe that both of these problems will soon be rectified. We'll just have to stay strong in the interim."
Anja wrote:“But would any other power have me? After being cast out from everything that I knew? How could anyone trust me?”
"I cannot presume to speak for the gods, but I believe that you will find that many will judge you by the contents of your heart, rather than by past actions. Take your time, learn as much as you can, and follow the path that your heart sets before you. Do so, and everything will work out as it should."
“Then leave me be, dwarf,” Nina answers tersely. “I have no need for your help or sympathy. Unlike my disgraced sister, I remain strong in my faith.”
"As you wish, Nina," Grondar says, beginning to turn away. "Faith is a wonderful thing; just be sure that those you give it to are worthy of it."

---

Grondar listens with interest as Silvarn discusses what she knows of the Cold One's artifacts. It is good that the magical weapons will be safe to use.

"Your plan for the Heart of Winter seems sound to me. I have faith that your people will deal with it appropriately."
Ivy wrote:“That does seem like an ideal solution,” Ivy notes, taking a glance at Anja. “But I have my concerns. Where is this place? Anja does not seem to be evil to me at all. "I would have to agree with the ladies," Grondar offers. "I believe that Anja has a good heart and should be allowed to find her own way. It is possible that she will wish to stay with her sister, but I believe the choice should be left up to her."

Moments later, a dwarf steps out of the Stone Cube that Silvarn was carrying and introduces himself as Oran Firehammer, a name Grondar has heard before. He seems to be familiar with Aria, and Aria introduces Farian and himself to the newcomer.

"Aye, well met, Oran. We would be more than happy to have your company in our quest. There is much to be done, and more strong hands will make completion come that much sooner."
Silvarn wrote:“If you are ready to depart, then go inside,” Silvarn states. “Once you are inside, I’ll grab the Heart of Winter and we’ll be away from this place.”
"If I may, Lady Silvarn, two of our companions - Sherra and Yusef - have not yet returned from their explorations inside the castle. We should await their return before leaving."

BTW, it's not clear to me at this point: Are the dwarves dropped off at Fort Fletcher, or are they taken all the way back to Karn's Keep? I would assume the former, but some of the text seems confusing on this point. If so, I would guess that you intend for them to stay in this thread rather than moving to the other one?

Sherra wrote:"I think that would be our next best bet," Sherra agrees after they have emptied the chest, "and yes I believe that was her name."
"Then so it shall be." Yusef accompanies Sherra up to the next level of the castle. "Let's just hope there are no more frozen bodies..." he says with obvious distaste.

They are greeted by four doors, all of which appear to be magically sealed.
Sherra wrote:"You wouldn't happen to be able to get us past this inconvience, would you?" Sherra says as she turns to Yusef, her eyes hopeful.
Yusef studies the door for a moment. "Unfortunately, I don't have any Dispel Magic blessings today as I didn't anticipate running into this kind of problem by ourselves. Sorry. However, there is one thing I can try which may get me past the doors, but I won't be able to bring you along."

With that, Yusef activates his Darkform ability and tries to find a means to slip by the sealed doors around the edges or through some kind of crack in the icy walls.

“Thank you both. There is much wisdom in your words. I will explore my options before making any rash decisions.”

Ivy will speak more of the teachings of Azrella should Anja seem to want to know more. Perhaps someday she’ll give herself willingly to another patron, one who is worthy of her.
Anja does indeed seem intrigued by the teachings of Azrella.

Treasure Hunting:

Elsewhere in the Ice Palace, Sherra and Yusef’s search for valuables has been blocked by four magically sealed doors. To circumvent this, Yusef uses one of his innate abilities. His body takes on a dark smoky appearance he easily slips through the small opening around the doors.

The chambers beyond are more pleasant than Mina’s and have a definite feminine appearance to them. Behind one door is Kalandor’s bedchamber. Another is a study. One a desk are several open books with arcane looking formulas on their pages. Another chamber seems to be a walk in closet where Kalandor kept spare priestess robes, along with other regular clothing. A few pieces of jewelry are noted there. The last door has a small mage laboratory behind it.

Many hours later, Silvarn returns to take the Guardians back to civilization…
Sir Corley wrote:“We were unprepared for the beast upon our first battle, but we managed to drive it off. Our second engagement went much better and we banished the beast without any serious injury.”
“I am pleased that things turned out as they did,” Silvarn agrees. “Knowing with what you are dealing with is half the battle at times.”
“My people dwell unimaginably far away from this place, but with the proper spells the journey takes only a few heart beats. Anja would be returned should she have freed her heart of the Cold One’s hatred, we do not hold her back without reason. Yes, you may accompany me when I take the sisters to the place I indicated if that would put your mind at ease. I am sure that you wandering monk would greatly enjoy this chance of a lifetime excursion.”

"I would have to agree with the ladies," Grondar offers. "I believe that Anja has a good heart and should be allowed to find her own way. It is possible that she will wish to stay with her sister, but I believe the choice should be left up to her."
“That may very well be,” Silvarn answers, “but there is no harm in making sure is there? As I earlier indicated, if she has freed herself from her past, then we have no reason to hold her back. She can make her own choices once we are certain.”

Tentatively, Anya steps forward. “Please, my friends. It is all right. I will go with her, as I’m not honestly sure I have overcome the way I was raised. And I wish to make sure my sister is well. She may hate me now, but I cannot hate her. I would like to return when and if I am ready, if you will have me.”

Oran Firehammer:
“Well met, Oran Firehammer,” Aria answers as they grasp hands. “Aye, your reputation does precede you! I would be most pleased to have your hammer among us! Allow me to introduce our other companions. This is Grondar, a follower of Berronar Truesilver and Farian Silverpike our scout. The rest await us at Fort Fletcher. Come, let us be away from this horrid cold and warm up with some dwarven ale around a warm fire!”
“I would like that very much,” Oran agrees. “This is no place for a dwarven warrior.”
Farian wrote:Standing idly by he steps forward when his name is called forth. Putting forth his hand in friendship. “Well met, Oran Firehammer. Tis good to have one of your talents amongst our own.”
Grondar wrote:"Aye, well met, Oran. We would be more than happy to have your company in our quest. There is much to be done, and more strong hands will make completion come that much sooner."
“Welcome comrades,” Oran says to Farian and Grondar. “Let us retake what was once rightful ours!”

GM Notes

GM Notes:

We’ve been operating in two different time frames for the last several posts. The initial conversations with Anja, and Sherra and Yusef’s explorations. This all occurs shortly after Mina was banished.

Silvarn arrived nearly 8 hours later, so there was plenty of time to wrap all the earlier stuff up and have everyone ready to go, even though we’re still playing their earlier stuff out.
I was deliberately vague just in case any of the dwarves changed their minds and continued on with the main group. I essentially didn’t want to make that decision for the characters. But since all the dwarves are continuing on with their Hammerfall adventure, they would not be taken to Karn’s Keep, so there is no reason to post them over in Cynalon Knights. Once the dwarves are back on their own and moving onwards they’ll be split out into their own title and folder on the forum that will be called “Hammerfall”. Until that time, continue posting here in New Frontiers.
Let's go with 20K XP in Thief and 30K in Monk. That should give a level in each.
Yusef’s online info has been updated.

Now What?

Ivy:
“That sounds very noble,” Anja agrees. “It is better to help than harm. I honestly thought we were helping people, not hurting them. Giving them a wonderful gift to make their days brighter. But we only brought pain and suffering. I was so stupid!”
“You were following the wishes of your mother and didn’t know the true implications of what you were doing. But once you knew the truth, you acted accordingly. No one will hold that against you.”
Anja wrote:“Thank you both. There is much wisdom in your words. I will explore my options before making any rash decisions.”
“Such a thing is not without precedence. There is another outcast from your faith named Kharyna who walked the same path as you did. She was accepted into the Mystran faith and now serves the Lady of Mysteries, as does Lyonessa. It is possible to serve another patron if you wish it.”
Anja does indeed seem intrigued by the teachings of Azrella.
Seeing that Anja is receptive to the wisdom of Azrella, Ivy will tell her more about her faith.
Silvarn wrote:“My people dwell unimaginably far away from this place, but with the proper spells the journey takes only a few heart beats.
“I suppose this place you speak of is very cold?” Ivy asks warily. “Nonetheless, yes, I would put my mind at ease. I would like to accompany you on this journey.”

Ivy is about to say more, when Anya speaks up for herself. “As you wish, Anja. I will still go along with you to see this pace if you wish it. And I am sure that we’ll welcome the day when you return to us.”
For the glory of the Blue Lady!

Chareos

“You know, that isn’t a bad idea at all,” Argent agrees. “I lived at Jallarzi’s estate for a time and there is something to be said about being close to town, but not too close.”
"Perhaps if there is time in our travels we could see into such a thing. It would prove to be a beneficial venture to at least procure the land, and build upon it at a later time."
“I see, more as a hobby then. I suppose that makes sense. Magic seems to take all my time these days, so I really haven’t considered anything like that. Simply too much to do for any side interests.”
Nodding slightly, "It would be nice to have such a hobby I would think, but it is a reality that may not take place for sometime. Though it is good to be mindful of such things now and again."

A little later on Chareos will approach Silvarn and Sir Corley when they are together, "Pardon me if I am intruding, but I was dwelling on this for a time. If this heart of winter is removed from this place, the palace still stands assuming once the alter is destroyed, The Cold maiden's followers may recover this palace. Though I am curious given our situation," looking to Silvarn with a wink, "You have help the Guardians many times in the past and I would hate to see such a fine structure go to waste.Would this palace server your purposes, Silvarn? If so, perhaps the king could turn a blind eye on this place for your benefit."
When the time comes to depart, Chareos will offer his arm to Argent to escort her into the stone house.
To serve and protect those who cannot.

"A wise decision, Anja," Grondar replies with a satisfied nod.

"Your concern for your sister speaks well of you, Anja. I have no doubt that you would be welcomed back amongst us when you are ready."
Oran wrote:“Welcome comrades,” Oran says to Farian and Grondar. “Let us retake what was once rightfully ours!”
"Hear! Hear! Let's reenter the Stone House so that Silvarn can deliver us to our comrades in Fort Fletcher."

Sorry. I think I'm back up to speed now.

A New Path

Yusef:

Slipping into the different rooms, Yusef examines them carefully. Not having much experience with this particular ability, he tries picking up items like the arcane tomes and jewelry. He also examines the doors carefully to see if there might be some obvious way to open them from the inside.

Having returned from their search of the castle, Yusef listens in on the discussion. "Indeed! I would very much like to see your homeland, Silvarn." He smiles happily over at Anja and Ivy.

more than one way in..

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:
Elsewhere in the Ice Palace, Sherra and Yusef’s search for valuables has been blocked by four magically sealed doors. To circumvent this, Yusef uses one of his innate abilities. His body takes on a dark smoky appearance he easily slips through the small opening around the doors.
"That's handy," Sherra says to herself watching Yusef turn to smoke. "He is just full of useful tricks."

Not much else to do, Sherra keeps an eye out for anyone. Just because they're fairly certain the palace is now empty doesn't mean something isn't lurking about.
