Cynalon Knights #7

Baron Validar/Dar Thaltus:

"There are many tasks which vie for my attention. We have the matter of reclaiming and controlling all of Elcadan, which will not be a small matter. We will be accompanying Duke Relon in his march to Elcadan City and I am certain it shall not be as simple as it sounds."

"Beyond that there is the matter of assisting the dwarves in the reclaiming of their holdings in the region, defeating the enemy in Ardelphia and Stone Ridge and more. But for now, our focus is on Elcadan."
“While I would prefer to be out in the wilderness, cities can be a different kind of wilderness,” Dar answers. “Regardless, we’ll be up to the task at hand.”

Baron Validar/Sir Alon:
Validar considers his old mentor's words. "I imagine you are correct, although I had never thought of it in those terms. I most certainly do place higher standards upon myself than anyone else could ever hope to do."

"But I have high hopes for my lands and for the Kingdom. To take what has been given me and not expand and build upon it would be a waste of the responsibility entrusted upon me. Too many nobles recently have done just that and it is part of the reason the Kingdom is in the state that it is currently."
“You do speak truly and if more nobles thought as you did, then yes, this land would be so much better than it is now.”
Validar can only smile, as he thinks about himself when he first started to learn the art of war from a knight. Much has happened in those days. "If they are worthy, they will help us forge a new realm that will know prosperity for aeons."
Sir Alon will chuckle, “That is the tricky part, my friend! Finding out who is worthy and who was just born into high standing.”
"While I do not welcome the strife that you mention, I would be pleased if we managed to control Elcadan before it was unleashed. Still, I am certain that your suspicions have merit, else they would not exist."
“I have dealt with the nobles of the court for a long time, both with our former and our current king. The new king favors those with vision and those who do not choose the safer path. Unfortunately, by doing so he cannot help but alienate those who had favor with the old king who wish to maintain the status quo.”
"The Kelvins are one of the lines that existed before Cynalon was formed. They do not have a direct lineage to the King's bloodline and I imagine they always wanted in, even more. They have much influence with many of the other old families as well. I will be certain to be wary of them and their machinations."
“More than few Kelvin women have vied for the king’s hand, but our past kings seem to have their own minds when it comes to choosing a queen. They seem to favor strong willed women and ones not necessarily of noble birth. The older Kelvins strike me as men who have a large chip on their shoulder at this seeming snub of their family. A loathing that has only grown with each passing generation.”

Baron Validar/Duke Corun I:
"I shall endeavor to see that you shall not need do so alone." Validar does not explain his true meaning of this statement now, but perhaps in time. "We need everyone to be strong if the Kingdom is to prosper."
“Or at the very least our borders secure. Any significant threat to the kingdom will come from the outside after all.”
"Indeed, Relon is now Duke of Elcadan. While it is a title slightly reduced from that of the previous duke, with some of the lands going to Athenos, and perhaps a title in name only for the brief moment, we will all strive to make Elcadan one of the finest jewels in Cynalon's crown."
“That will take some doing. The Merchant Guilds have long been the true power and they will be difficult to deal with. But, if they can be brought in line, then all of us in the Outer Kingdom will benefit from it.”
"It is important to our immediate task to regain complete control of Elcadan to have as many formal alliances as possible. While I am aware that you do not have the troops to assist us militarily, that is not the avenue we currently need. For now it is political and economic. In truth, I dare say we can be of a considerable boon to your lands."
“Fair trade with Elcadan would be a boon to Corunglain. Not only have we had to deal with repeated orc attacks and the loss of our mines, but with the over charging merchants of Elcadan. For too long it seems as if we in Corunglain have been treading water. Unable to make any significant gains in any front. For the first time I have hope that things will improve.”

Baron Validar/Bernice:
"Ah, Gabriella, perhaps you remember my teammate from the Seekers, Bernice. Bernice, this is my lady, Gabriella Allonica. What brings you to Karn's Keep?"
“I had to come back once I heard that you had returned!” Bernice answers excitedly. “It just wasn’t the same without you! Most of our comrades left the Seekers and then they joined up with another group to go on some quest. They even changed their name, so there are no more Seekers! I stayed here at the keep for a time, but had to leave since that awful snake now lives here! So where are we going next? You know that someone has to watch out for you and keep you safe. Why that duty falls to me, I’ll never know.”

“Hi lady,” Bernice says to Gabriella with a wave.

Sir Acerion/Sir Alon:
"Yes, my remaining family, both my mother and grandmother, are there," Acerion explains. "Indeed I would like to send them a message. I shall have them prepared before your departure."

Acerion will meet up again with Sir Alon before he departs and hand him the two sealed messages. "Thank you for carrying these to them," he will say before leaving.
“Very good then. I am happy to be of assistance. I assure that I will deliver these to your family personally.”

Sir Acerion/Duke Corun:
"Ardelphia shall be freed from its oppressive yoke, of that you can have faith in," Acerion replies. "It is one of my driving goals to do just that. It is not my place to question the actions of a man faced with a difficult decision, but if you were able to join in the cause to reclaim these lands, then I would gratefully welcome such assistance. Of course, it would not be something that you and I would be doing alone," the last is said with a smile.
“It is my fondest wish to see Stone Ridge liberated, I assure you. Alas, Corunglain has found itself between the preverbal rock and hard place these last few decades. Harried by the seemingly never-ending hordes of orcs, severely undermanned, and charged exuberant prices for even the simplest of supplies by the Elcadan Merchants. Liberating Stone Ridge in a sense liberates Corunglain. The ore from the mines will put us on a more even footing.”
"Indeed I have heard of it," Acerion says. "My companions and I have recovered the Shield of Justice. It is with great honor that Heironeous has allowed me to be its guardian until its ultimate purpose can be realized."
“You have? That’s wonderful news! You are truly worthy to bear this shield! We are now closer to the liberation of Ardelphia!”
While that information sinks in, Acerion continues, "You say you had one of the shields? I take this to mean that you no longer do?"
“It was in my possession before the attack on Corunglain. But now I cannot say until I return home.”

(The shield is still there. The Duke is just behind times on certain subjects.)
"I will take you up on your kind offer to visit Corunglain once time permits me to do so," Acerion replies.
“It will be our honor to have you.”

Baron Validar/Duke Corun II:
The day after, Validar will make some time to visit the Duke of Corunglain once more, after lunch, as they had proposed. Lady Gabriella accompanies him to the talks and Validar introduces the lady to the Duke and any others present. Pleasantries are exchanged and the Duke and his family are doing much better now with clerical attention and some rest.

"Firstly, I would like to formalize a basic treaty of alliance between the Duchy of Corunglain and the Duchy of Elcadan. Lady Allonica and I have prepared a simple Writ of Alliance, further details can be worked out once Duke Relon and you have more time to deal with the matters currently at hand, for both duchies are undergoing different forms of strife."

"We have assisted your lands and helped to turn the tide against the humanoid horde. Your alliance will lend the new Duke's position even greater credibility in the stabilization of Elcadan and its territories. In addition to the alliance we have had with Graystone, our negotiating position with the lords of Elcadan is strong."

Lady Allonica will present the Alliance for signing to the Duke. "We look forward to future negotiations and opportunities to assist one another," she says, as Duke Corun reads the document over.
“It is agreeable too me”, the Duke states after examining the document. “Far too often I’ve felt that Corunglain stood alone in their mission to guard the Kingdom. Make no mistake; this is a task my ancestors willing accepted, so I do not complain about it. But having assistance will be nice as well.”
Once that is completed, Validar will thank the Duke and offer his hand to confirm the deal. "There is one more matter, which I wish to discuss with your lordship, Duke Corun. I am curious, what would you offer for the reclamation and recovery of Stone Ridge? I think you can agree, that given what my associates and I have accomplished, that such a task is not out of the question as an attainable feat. But it would be an undertaking of considerable danger, time and expense. What would your duchy promise to reclaim these fallen lands?"
“The reclamation of Stone Ridge would be a boon for all, Baron Validar. The next step would be to reopen the mines in that area, which would not only benefit Corunglain, but Elcadan as well. In Elcadan, you have the industries to take raw ore and transform it into usable metals. While Corunglain has this too, we are not as large as Elcadan is. Thus much of the ore will need to be sent to Elcadan for processing. This brings much business and coins to both of our domains and provides us with the weapons we need to defend our borders. Everyone benefits.”

“The Ardel Family commissioned the creation of the Guardian Shield to help protect their holdings. My father always felt that it was the Merchants of Elcadan who foiled their plans and had some of the portions of the Shield go missing. Much of their wealth was gained by controlling how much ore was available for sale. They limited ore quantities while raising prices. At any rate, at the present using the Shield to secure Ardelphia is our best option as it will require little manpower to hold that territory.”

“To those who accomplish this great task of not only liberating Stone Ridge, but holding it there would be wealth to be had. Even land and titles for such worthy men and women and of course my favor.”

Serena:
“Ah, that places it much further south, and closer to Athenos. I thought perhaps it was within Elcadan's territory, but it is not based on where you say."
“Is that a dangerous area,” Serena asks curiously.
"Indeed, you are correct. And yet I am aware of many of the faults of our Kingdom. Hopefully they can be corrected with proper leadership and direction. It is often the faults that lie closest to oneself that are the hardest to see. It is easy to find fault in your friends. Even easier still to find fault in your enemies. It is truly difficult to find fault in one's own doings."
“There is a wisdom to your words,” Serena agrees. “Finding an inner peace often makes it easier to deal with the world around you. But I have seen too many men do horrible things for what they thought were right reasons. Caution and a little humility never hurts.”

While waiting to depart, Serena will tend to the Keep’s shrine to Mystra. She’ll also practice with her new blade when able.

Lady Gabriella

Post by Gabriella »

Lady Gabriella:
"It may be acceptable to them, but that does not change the fact it is a coward's method. And that is why they are not successful. While it is important to understand their methods, I do not respect them, nor do I ever wish to emulate them. A victory is hollow if won through deceit or vile trickery and its spoils soon lost. While it is important to use these methods in strategy, to use them in one's tactics seems to only result in ultimate failure."
“It is abhorrent philosophy, no doubt. But as a negotiator I need to understand the other side's point of view. The same applies to our enemies as well. If you understand their methods and their goals, then you can work to counter them.”
"We mere mortals have our own advantages, I dare say. For how could even one who has the blood of another planar being rival you in your charm, beauty and grace? Truly there is not one in the heavens who claim such."
Lady Gabriella will give Validar a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “That’s a very sweet thing to say.” But with an impish grin, she’ll add, “How do you not know that such blood isn’t within my family already?”
"I should hope the prospect is appealing, to say the least," Validar responds with a playful grin. "Few people take the opportunity to forge themselves a life they desire. We have the means to do so and the process is already begun."
“Indeed. The last few years I’ve done little more than work to support our current King. I haven’t thought about myself much as of late.”
"As for a return to your home, that is a wise decision and I am sure something that is long overdue. I hope to be able to accompany you on that journey. I would very much like to meet your family. As for a staff, there is no reason not to assemble them as soon as you are able. There is no need to wait until our wedding day. I am certain the extra assistance will be quite useful."
“If we can fit it into our busy schedule. Current events will demand your attention for many days to come. I fear it might be a while yet.”
"Unfortunately, I think you misunderstood me on a variety of levels. But that is what these discussions are for. First of all, I do not think that Vera is the beginning and then end of Stone Ridge. She is the most likely claimant to the title however. I do not think that can be disputed. And should Lord Corley in fact win her affections, then the lands shall have a reasonable ruler and she cannot be overlooked for her lack of skill. Do you have some information that would refute this?"
“She is the rightful ruler of Ardelphia, on this I do agree. From my few, admittedly short, meetings with her, I think she would be a fine wife and mother someday. I do not see the necessarily skills in her to be a ruler. In my opinion, it would be a benefit to Lady Vera that she have a strong husband to oversee the domain for her.”
"Also, I did not say that no one wishes to recover it, but that those that do desire it do not have the resources to do so. A large difference. Corunglain will be a long time from being able to defend such a territory. As such, it will remain lawless and empty. Elcadan on the other hand, has a large proportion of people who need to be moved out of the slums of the city and they could begin the process of inhabiting the lands much faster than another realm. How could Corunglain begin to populate the land if they have been under so much strife of war? And how can they begin to pay for the costs of reconstruction? There is more to having Stone Ridge than simply freeing Ardelphia."
“I honestly don’t know what can realistically be done there. Stone Ridge is far from my own families land, so I don’t feel any strong connection to it. But I do know that its resources are valuable and that alones makes it a domain worth reclaiming.”

“The only danger in such a negotiation is to not offend the one you are dealing with. Semantics are very important in what I do and it is easy to misconstrue true meanings. For instance, your offer for training their troops seems like a reasonable one, but the Duke could take it to say that you feel your men are superior to his and thus they are lacking. Even something said with the noblest of intentions can be twisted to take on a whole new meaning. The formation of alliances or the making of enemies can hinge on even the most innocent of things.”
"Your questions are all good ones, for they force me to have answers to them. Believe me, I have thought much about the campaign that is required to claim Stone Ridge as well as to hold it indefinitely. Much as I have thought about the war that now will never be against Elcadan. I need you to question the plans, for that is how one makes a better plan. And I need you to help be learn what is the motivations of the Duke and what does he want, as well as what it would take from him to earn Stone Ridge."
“War against Elcadan? Did you seriously consider that such a thing would come to war?” From Lady Gabriella’s tone, its clear that she considers such a thing to be impossible. “They are merchants, not generals. The only war they wage is one of economics. Besides open warfare between domains is treason under the King’s Law. They would not risk such a thing. They sought to control Pyris, not literally conquer it.”
"I had thought about going to the Duke and making my proposal, but I have learned some about the art of diplomacy and despite what some people may say, I can be tactful."
“I for one am glad that you sought my opinion first. I suppose that negotiations are much like hand to hand combat. Analyze your opponent and find their weakness. When you learn their weakness, what your opponent desires, then you can negotiate from a position of strength.”
"Ah, Gabriella, perhaps you remember my teammate from the Seekers, Bernice. Bernice, this is my lady, Gabriella Allonica. What brings you to Karn's Keep?"
“Hail, Mistress Bernice. Tales of your exploits precede you.”

Lady Gabriella will then try to stifle a chuckle as the halfling then proceeds to tell Validar that he needs her to keep him safe.

Baron Validar -

Sir Acerion:
"It is good to hear Serena will join with us as well," Acerion replies, leaving the previous comments about Crysania alone. The paladin knows that many here could easily have to face off against each other as the kingdom begins to solidify. For now though, having many allies is definitely worthwhile."

"Yes, the more allies the better. With all the help we are having, we may actually pull off the tasks we are attempting!," Validar says with a hint of a sarcastic smile.

"I have no doubt we will not lack for things demanding our attention," Acerion says. "It will be good though to have the chance to take care of many such plans and actions when in Pyris. I am eager to interview the squire candidates."

"Having a number of enemies is not unexpected with lives ones such as ourselves lead," Acerion continues. "I will remain ever vigilant in making sure none of us suddenly sprout daggers or arrows from our backs."

"Having the squires will certainly give us the opportunity to install our values in them. What they choose to do with that information certainly remains to be seen. If we do our jobs well, then we will increase the stable of powerful warriors for the cause of Cynalon."

"Your vigilance is ever appreciated, my friend."

Sir Alon:
Validar can only smile, as he thinks about himself when he first started to learn the art of war from a knight. Much has happened in those days. "If they are worthy, they will help us forge a new realm that will know prosperity for aeons."

Sir Alon will chuckle, “That is the tricky part, my friend! Finding out who is worthy and who was just born into high standing.”

"It is not any easy choice based upon circumstances and appearances, but when one fights and lives with an individual, their true colors come out quite quickly, I have found."

"Which brings us back to what we were talking about earlier. You cannot always tell ones motives by their manner and demeanor. Your experience in actual dealings with the court nobles will prove invaluable. It is a storehouse of information that I wish I had to draw from. Much of what we will be doing in Elcadan will be a process of learning and trial and error. Fortunately, my father is an astute politician."

"It seems that we have a potential polarization of the country. That explains your concern about a civil war. It is the extreme polarization over a strong belief that can cause a civil war. The is nothing stronger than the desire for personal power."

Validar smiles a mirthless smile. "It is always the case with those who believe priviledge is a right rather than something to be earned. They take affronts at imagined offenses, rather than improve themselves, they grouse over the oversights. I shall endeavor to steer clear of this family, but I have a feeling that we shall clash with them sooner or later."

Duke Corun (part I):
"We need everyone to be strong if the Kingdom is to prosper."

“Or at the very least our borders secure. Any significant threat to the kingdom will come from the outside after all.”

Validar considers his words for a moment. "While I am sure that the main threat is from without, and it is perfectly understandable for you and your family to be focused on the enemy that you stand against, there is always the threat of an internal enemy. Especially while the Kingdom is in a period of transition, much as we are at the moment."

"I am certain that my father will have the political tact to deal with the situation as needed. And we certainly have the military prowess to deal with those situations as they may occur. Eventually, they will be brought in line, the only question is when and with how much strife."

"Yes, Elcadan has been a bane to us all. In Pyris, we were constantly on guard against their economic sanctions, their political tricks and their sanctioned banditry. That Pyris has done as well as it has with such a large thorn in its side is a telling statement. But now Elcadan will no longer be a weight to be born by the surrounding lands, but a benefit to the whole kingdom. At least to those who were not profiting from their evil ways."

"If necessary, we will take control of the Merchant Guilds by force. Hopefully that will not be the case and they will see the prosperity that will come from the new rule. In any case, in time, fair trade will certainly benefit both your lands and mine."

Bernice & Gabriella:
“Hail, Mistress Bernice. Tales of your exploits precede you.”

Lady Gabriella will then try to stifle a chuckle as the halfling then proceeds to tell Validar that he needs her to keep him safe.

"Yes, I have heard that the Seekers are no more. Arocken has been travelling with me for some time now, and while he is not here, we will be meeting him again in Pyris. Also Araduin and Dar Thaltus have joined with us once more. We found them in the vile temple in New Keln, from which we just returned."

"Perhaps it is time for the Seekers to be reborn. With you in the fold, Arocken, Dar Thaltus, Araduin, and now the joining of Blod and Zynara, all we need is Cereld, Finrod and Stephanie to have our core group reunited."

"I feared that I would not see any of you again, with my failure to return to Gateway in a timely fashion. But everyone moves on. It seems that the core of the Seekers was lost, but now is found once more."

"But since you have asked, we are returning to Pyris and then to accompany my father, the new Duke of Elcadan, on his march to claim his lands and oppose our enemies. We also have been tasked to recover the lands of Stone Ridge and to assist in the continued defense of Corunglain. Fortunately the bulk of that assignment has been successfully completed. We are leaving the morning after next, so please enjoy yourself, seek out our friends, Araduin and Dar Thaltus, and be ready to leave early for there is much to do."

"Welcome to the new Seekers, my diminutive friend!"

Baron Validar -

Serena the Inquisitor:
“Ah, that places it much further south, and closer to Athenos. I thought perhaps it was within Elcadan's territory, but it is not based on where you say."

“Is that a dangerous area,” Serena asks curiously.

"The swamp is somewhat dangerous and the area to the west of the swamp is not settled much anymore. It is not what I would call a particularly dangerous area, but it is not completely civilized either."

"An inner peace," validar says, mulling that thought around in his head. "I imagine that it might, at that, although I find such a thought for myself rather challenging. There is far too much that draws my attention to have a sense of peace about it all, at least for now."

"You are correct, however. One's beliefs can cause one to do good or ill and often the opposite of what was originally intended."

Lady Gabriella Allonica:
“It is abhorrent philosophy, no doubt. But as a negotiator I need to understand the other side's point of view. The same applies to our enemies as well. If you understand their methods and their goals, then you can work to counter them.”

"I do not disagree. Simply put, however, I have seen politicians and their like allow themselves to be desensitized to abhorrent philosophy in an effort to learn about their enemies. If one is not careful, you can become much like them. I do not need to understand the reasons why the Hextorites act as they do to know they must be opposed and destroyed."

"Certainly, we have differing views of looking at a problem. Hopefull, working together we will be able to make even better use of our individual talents and skills."

"An interesting idea," Validar says with a smile. He grabs his woman by her upper arms and pulls her close to him. "What shall we do to find out the truth?" He says mischieviously. But then he smiles and kisses her on the lips, a long lingering embrace.

"You've managed to capture my attention," Validar says. "That could be counted as 'something for yourself'. But even still, while the King requires our assistance, we must make our own plans for the future, both near and far."

"There will come a time, when it will be possible. There is much to do, but there is always much to do. It is simply a matter of making time for things that are important. At some point soon, it shall become the most important task to accomplish."

"I would not think otherwise. She does not seem to be the type to manage it well enough on her own. If she had the charisma to be a true leader, then she would have rallied others about her already to complete the task, rather than relying more upon her feminine wiles and feelings of symmpathy."

"Surely, if I had wanted to claim Stone Ridge for myself, I could have done so easily enough, but that is an expedient answer and not one that allows for some other necessary options. Sir Corley has interest in the Lady and teh would make a fine couple. As things begin to settle themselves down, I hope to introduce Corley more and more into Lady Vera's attentions. In fact, that is something that you could be of supreme assistance in completing. You have said before that you are an excellent match-maker."

“I honestly don’t know what can realistically be done there. Stone Ridge is far from my own families land, so I don’t feel any strong connection to it. But I do know that its resources are valuable and that alones makes it a domain worth reclaiming.”

"Indeed it is at that. It makes every sense to have another domain on that borderland, as the defense is shared between two rather than one lord. The economic considerations are increased for both, as are the political ones." Validar sighs for a moment. "It would be a supreme disappointment to me to fail to acquire the land, considering it is waiting there like a ripe apple to be plucked. I suppose if we are able to reclaim it without gaining it, then we should turn our eyes more towards Akorros and the lands around it."

Yes, we do not wish to alienate our friend, the Duke. We will need to have a suitable alliance that benefits both of our duchies, to be certain. However, I do not think there is anyone in the realm who would be offended at the suggestion that our artillerymen are amongst the finest in all the continent."

"But I will try to keep your suggestion at hand. It is duly noted. There are more than one way to win a battle, whether it is of words or swords."

"It has ever been the truth. Perhaps my views are colored by direct dealings with the dogs of Elcadan and perhaps yours are colored by your lack of direct interaction. But I can assure you that they would have swallowed us up at the slightest opportunity."

"While the do indeed wage an effective war of economics, they also wage one of politics and of banditry. They attempt at every turn to twart any gain that Pyris might make and the bandits are sanctioned by Elcadan that have plagued the high road caravans."

"The threat of treason is all that has likely stopped them amassing an army to invade Pyris. But ever we have defended ourselves from the threat of Elcadan. In truth, my whole life has been the preparation for war against Elcadan and the safety and continuity of Pyris."

“I for one am glad that you sought my opinion first. I suppose that negotiations are much like hand to hand combat. Analyze your opponent and find their weakness. When you learn their weakness, what your opponent desires, then you can negotiate from a position of strength.”

"Yes, I know have much to think on and perhaps a new direction for approaching the Duke of Corunglain. We shall make him our friend, as well as our ally, and then the negotitations will have a far different tone to them."

Bernice soon interrupts their conversation and talk is directed towards the reformation of the Seekers.

Alliance of Elcadan and Corunglain

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris:

Duke Corun (part II):
Lady Allonica will present the Alliance for signing to the Duke. "We look forward to future negotiations and opportunities to assist one another," she says, as Duke Corun reads the document over.

“It is agreeable too me”, the Duke states after examining the document. “Far too often I’ve felt that Corunglain stood alone in their mission to guard the Kingdom. Make no mistake; this is a task my ancestors willing accepted, so I do not complain about it. But having assistance will be nice as well.”

"The Inner Lands have often left us to our own devices and Elcadan's Merchant Guilds have allied themselves moreso with those Inner Lords as best they could, further causing our lands to be isolated and alone. Now, we shall build a new strength to the Kingdom, a new seat of power. Your position as northern guardians will once again know the prestige that it deserves."

"Indeed, the lands will begin to become repopulated, cities and towns will grow up from the ruins of the horde's vile invasion and a greater prosperity will be known than ever before in Western Cynalon. It is a cumulative effect to be sure, the more people there and the greater the economy generated, the easier it will be to defend."

"I have vowed to the Lady Ardel that I would see Stone Ridge reclaimed and returned to her. While I have many vital tasks fighting for my attention, that is one which shall be completed. On that, you also have my word."

"I have heard about the Guardian Shield. In truth, half of it has been claimed, one portion by our own paladin, Sir Acerion. But it is an interesting thought you propose regarding the Merchant Guild's involvement. Surely, it would not be in their interest for Stone Ridge to have such wealth available to it." Validar turns to Lady Gabriella. "As I have said, Elcadan has been ruled by a vile internal enemy. It is time to root that enemy out once and for all."

"I am certain that Duke Relon will have some specifics in mind regarding the economic agreements between the two duchies. Surely there will be opportunities for both lands to benefit greatly."

“To those who accomplish this great task of not only liberating Stone Ridge, but holding it there would be wealth to be had. Even land and titles for such worthy men and women and of course my favor.”

"There is much honor in your words and I look forward to completing the task, for the greater good of Cynalon. It may take some time, but I can assure you it will be completed."

With the details complete, Validar will rise and take his lady by her arm. I am pleased that we could begin the alliance of Corunglain and Elcadan. I can assure you that Pyris and all of her citizens will ever be ready to uphold our end of the alliance and to help to make the Kingdom as successful as possible. I hope that Lady Gabriella and I will be able to be on hand for further negotiations and closer deals. Until that day. Long live King Victor the VIIIth."

Baron Validar/Sir Alon:

"It seems that we have a potential polarization of the country. That explains your concern about a civil war. It is the extreme polarization over a strong belief that can cause a civil war. The is nothing stronger than the desire for personal power."
“In the end, that is what it will all come down to. What will those who perceive themselves as being snubbed by the new king do to ensure their own personal power? How far will they go to take what they think to be theirs? Far too many of the Inner Kingdom nobles are more concerned about their own welfare than that of the Kingdom as a whole.”
Validar smiles a mirthless smile. "It is always the case with those who believe privilege is a right rather than something to be earned. They take affronts at imagined offenses, rather than improve themselves, they grouse over the oversights. I shall endeavor to steer clear of this family, but I have a feeling that we shall clash with them sooner or later."
“I fear we all shall soon be clashing with them and their allies. At any rate, I will try to keep in contact with you. But for now, I must return to the Order Hall and become engaged in these new intrigues.”

Baron Validar/Duke Corun I:
Validar considers his words for a moment. "While I am sure that the main threat is from without, and it is perfectly understandable for you and your family to be focused on the enemy that you stand against, there is always the threat of an internal enemy. Especially while the Kingdom is in a period of transition, much as we are at the moment."
“That is always a danger when the change in leadership is sudden and unexpected,” the Duke states. “I must confess that with Corunglain being so far from the kingdom’s seat of power, that I know little about what goes on there. You really believe that this will all lead to internal strife?”

“I know that your father will do what must be done in Elcadan. In spite of all the grave circumstances as of late, I can’t help but feel optimistic for the future. Things are getting better.”

Baron Validar/Bernice:
"But since you have asked, we are returning to Pyris and then to accompany my father, the new Duke of Elcadan, on his march to claim his lands and oppose our enemies. We also have been tasked to recover the lands of Stone Ridge and to assist in the continued defense of Corunglain. Fortunately the bulk of that assignment has been successfully completed. We are leaving the morning after next, so please enjoy yourself, seek out our friends, Araduin and Dar Thaltus, and be ready to leave early for there is much to do."
“Sounds like it could be dangerous,” Bernice notes, with her elongating the word ‘dangerous’ in the process. “I’ll be ready!”
"Welcome to the new Seekers, my diminutive friend!"
“The New Seekers?” Bernice repeats. “I kind of like the sound of that!”

Baron Validar/Duke Corun II:
"The Inner Lands have often left us to our own devices and Elcadan's Merchant Guilds have allied themselves more so with those Inner Lords as best they could, further causing our lands to be isolated and alone. Now, we shall build a new strength to the Kingdom, a new seat of power. Your position as northern guardians will once again know the prestige that it deserves."
“Such has always been the case,” the Duke agrees. “I have often thought, whimsically of course, that we outer Kingdom domains would be better off being our own separate Kingdom. Although we’ve existed for hundreds of years, they still treat us as little more than colonies.”

While I have many vital tasks fighting for my attention, that is one that shall be completed. On that, you also have my word."
“That will be our challenge. One that I hope that gods find us worthy of completing.”
“Yes, Sir Acerion did mention that when I spoke to him. It was very good news.”
"There is much honor in your words and I look forward to completing the task, for the greater good of Cynalon. It may take some time, but I can assure you it will be completed."
“We’ve waited a long time as it is. A bit longer will not be too hard to endure.”
With the details complete, Validar will rise and take his lady by her arm. “I am pleased that we could begin the alliance of Corunglain and Elcadan.
The Duke will shake Baron Validar’s hand. “I am pleased as well to have new friends to the south where once there were only enemies. I trust we shall meet again. In the meantime, I must return home and begin the process of putting my house into order. If you will excuse me, I must be going.”

Lady Gabriella:
"I do not disagree. Simply put, however, I have seen politicians and their like allow themselves to be desensitized to abhorrent philosophy in an effort to learn about their enemies. If one is not careful, you can become much like them. I do not need to understand the reasons why the Hextorites act as they do to know they must be opposed and destroyed."
“The Hextorites are certainly an extreme example. Most of those who I negotiate with are usually not as different as you or I. I suppose that there could be a danger such as in which you speak. However, I don’t plan on negotiating with those evil priests. That is a task that you are far better suited for than I.”
"I would not think otherwise. She does not seem to be the type to manage it well enough on her own. If she had the charisma to be a true leader, then she would have rallied others about her already to complete the task, rather than relying more upon her feminine wiles and feelings of sympathy."
“That is a very excellent point,” Gabriella agrees.
"Surely, if I had wanted to claim Stone Ridge for myself, I could have done so easily enough, but that is an expedient answer and not one that allows for some other necessary options. Sir Corley has interest in the Lady and they would make a fine couple. As things begin to settle themselves down, I hope to introduce Corley more and more into Lady Vera's attentions. In fact, that is something that you could be of supreme assistance in completing. You have said before that you are an excellent match-maker."
“Do you think that Sir Corley, his personal interest aside, would make a fine ruler for Ardelphia? Does his strength cover Lady Ardel’s weaknesses? I am sure that there are those who would think that your friend Sir Acerion, who already has a family claim the area, would make a better potential mate to the Lady Ardel.”
“Unfortunately, this apple grows on someone else’s tree. Someone who needs it very badly. But as you said, reclaiming Akorros would also be beneficial. The boon from the fishing industry from Lake Amsorak alone makes it worthwhile. Not to mention the ease of reaching other lakeside towns and villages.”

“But those are matters for the future. Just how they will play out remains to be seen. But for now, let us concern ourselves with the present and those close to us.”

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Sir Alon:
“In the end, that is what it will all come down to. What will those who perceive themselves as being snubbed by the new king do to ensure their own personal power? How far will they go to take what they think to be theirs? Far too many of the Inner Kingdom nobles are more concerned about their own welfare than that of the Kingdom as a whole.”

"That is an ideology that we in Pyris have been all too aware of since the formation of the Outer Kingdom. Ambition will be the downfall of many who attempt to work outside the wishes of the new King. I understand your concern for the forces at work here are very strong."

“I fear we all shall soon be clashing with them and their allies. At any rate, I will try to keep in contact with you. But for now, I must return to the Order Hall and become engaged in these new intrigues.”

"I will keep that in mind and welcome any information you may provide. May you fare well in your task."

Duke Corun I:
“That is always a danger when the change in leadership is sudden and unexpected,” the Duke states. “I must confess that with Corunglain being so far from the kingdom’s seat of power, that I know little about what goes on there. You really believe that this will all lead to internal strife?”

"Much as Elcadan has held her neighbors in low esteem and sought to dominate them in any way possible, the Inner Lands have sought to use and dominate our Outer Lands. They will not give up their ill-gotten power easily or quickly, in my opinion. Further, it is on the advisement of one I hold in high esteem that there is the expectation of serious internal strife, and perhaps quite soon. We must all be prepared to defend ourselves and our ways of life, politically, economically and if necessary, militarily. Another reason the alliance between our lands will be important."

“I know that your father will do what must be done in Elcadan. In spite of all the grave circumstances as of late, I can’t help but feel optimistic for the future. Things are getting better.”

"Indeed, I do share your optimism as well. The Kingdom is on good footing and moving forward in a positive direction."

Bernice:
“Sounds like it could be dangerous,” Bernice notes, with her elongating the word ‘dangerous’ in the process. “I’ll be ready!”

"Indeed, it may be, my friend," Validar responds. "But you have proven that you are ready for such danger with our past exploits in the Seekers."

"Welcome to the new Seekers, my diminutive friend!"

“The New Seekers?” Bernice repeats. “I kind of like the sound of that!”

"It does make my heart pleased that many of my companions have reunited. While it is not a complete and total reconciliation, I had expected not to see many of you again due to everyone travelling off in different directions," Validar responds.

"Bernice, Validar, Dar Thaltus, Arocken, Blod, Zynara and Araduin together again once more. Evil will once more tremble at the name of the New Seekers."

Duke Corun II:

"An interesting thought," Validar says, his brow furrowing slightly. "There is some concern that the Kingdom has two differing directions facing the Inner Lands and the Outer Realms. I hope that the King has the ability to forge a unified kingdom, or we could be facing that very situation."

"I am certain however, that with the influence that the new Lords Council has that the colony status that we have been burdened with will be lessening more and more and one day be alleviated once and for all."

"I have vowed to the Lady Ardel that I would see Stone Ridge reclaimed and returned to her. While I have many vital tasks fighting for my attention, that is one that shall be completed. On that, you also have my word."

“That will be our challenge. One that I hope that gods find us worthy of completing.”

"Not everything that happens is at the whim of the gods. Sometimes sheer force of will is enough to lead one's people to incredible success."

“Yes, Sir Acerion did mention that when I spoke to him. It was very good news.”

"It may be a challenge to locate the remaining Shields, but we are assembling more and more resources to make that option viable. There is no need to have the Shields immediately, but it would be best to have them ready to deploy as soon as possible." Validar thinks on his strategy for this mission. "I have some ideas on how to proceed, he says simply.

"There is much honor in your words and I look forward to completing the task, for the greater good of Cynalon. It may take some time, but I can assure you it will be completed."

“We’ve waited a long time as it is. A bit longer will not be too hard to endure.”

"For now, it is time to recover from the invasion and to rebuild Corunglain's strength. It may be needed again sooner than we expect. I do not expect our enemies to be very pleased with the recent successes we have struck. We must not rest on our victories, but be even more prepared for what next will come."

The Duke will shake Baron Validar’s hand. “I am pleased as well to have new friends to the south where once there were only enemies. I trust we shall meet again. In the meantime, I must return home and begin the process of putting my house into order. If you will excuse me, I must be going.”

Validar returns a firm handshake to the Duke of Corunglain and a nod to his attendants. He watches the Duke leave the meeting room and then turns to Lady Gabriella.

"That went about as well as expected. I just hope that Corunglain can recover well enough before the next attack comes. I fear that while we may have thwarted the horde, that the true enemy behind the invasion is still waiting to strike again."

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Lady Gabriella Allonica:
"I would not think otherwise. She does not seem to be the type to manage it well enough on her own. If she had the charisma to be a true leader, then she would have rallied others about her already to complete the task, rather than relying more upon her feminine wiles and feelings of sympathy."

“That is a very excellent point,” Gabriella agrees.

"Of course, it also speaks to the difficulty of the task and the skill required to complete it in the first place. Not many are up to the task and of those, most are either busy elsewhere, or not properly motivated to assist."

Validar listens to Gabriella's comments and mulls them about momentarily. "I agree that Sir Acerion seems well suited to be Lady Ardel's husband and therefore the new Baron of Stone Ridge. However, he has commented to me about a lack of political experience as well. And it is a moot point, as he has declared his love for Lady Ivy of Azrella and the two have plans to be wed sometime in the future."

"As for Sir Corley, he is strong, noble and brave. He has a fine sense of chivalry and honor and he strives to always uphold those ideals. In truth, he is much more honorable than I, as I would resort to undesirable solutions to problems should there be no other viable options, while Sir Corley would uphold his idealism first and foremost. He would be a selfless ruler for the people of Stone Ridge and I am sure they would love him."

"I do not know Lady Ardel well enough to determine whether the two would be an effective team in ruling the barony, but they would possess the passion necessary to succeed and that is saying a lot. It is also much of the reason I would like to see Stone Ridge become a part of Elcadan, as they would have perhaps a more reliable and practical source of support in the processes required."

"In the end, it may be a matter of who wins Lady Ardel's hand. Afterall, the decision is hers, foremost. If Sir Corley is in the vanguard of the recovery of Stone Ridge, I do believe that he would deserve such a reward for his devotion and duty, both to the Lady Ardel and to the King."

Validar sighs heavily for a moment. "I admit I am torn between the desire to claim Stone Ridge and the duty to recover it for the kingdom." Validar is silent for another moment. "The Barony of Akorros is indeed valuable and the economic boon that Stone Ridge would provide is also a benefit. There is still much to recover in making the Outer Realms as strong and powerful as the inner ones."

“But those are matters for the future. Just how they will play out remains to be seen. But for now, let us concern ourselves with the present and those close to us.”

"There is indeed enough to occupy everyone with the current situations. While I do not wish to be caught unawares with future developments, it would also be a disservice to my father to fail to give his efforts my best attention."

The heroes continue to unwind at Karn’s Keep in the aftermath of the raid on the Hextor Temple…

Baron Validar/Duke Corun:
"An interesting thought," Validar says, his brow furrowing slightly. "There is some concern that the Kingdom has two differing directions facing the Inner Lands and the Outer Realms. I hope that the King has the ability to forge a unified kingdom, or we could be facing that very situation."
“That will be his test as a ruler. Let us hope that he’s up to the challenge.”
“I agree, the shields are needed right now, but one day they will. It would behoove us to have them on hand and ready to use as opposed to needed them while half of them remain missing.”

New Arrivals:

Later that evening, Silvarn returns to Karn’s Keep bearing the Stone House. The door is opened and the Guardians come forth with their numerous mounts. Silvarn explains that Yusef had requested an audience with the King since he is of Deville blood, concerning is families involvement in the troubles in Elcadan. It was just simpler to bring everyone here instead of Pyris.

The new arrivals find themselves in a gigantic hall. The vaulted ceiling is 90’ overhead and the far wall over 200’ feet away! Quarters are quickly assigned for the evening and there is food and drink for those who seek it. Most importantly, the Keep is warm! There are shrines dedicated to Mystra, Tymora, Azrella, and Heironeous here.

There are numerous familiar faces and important nobles present, including the King himself. Lord Sharadin, Lady Salavarian, are present, along with Baron Validar and Sir Acerion who you knew would be here. Elspeth of Azrella is also present, along with Crysania, Sir Alon, and Dame Sharl.

The new arrivals are greeted and there are many stories to share.

GM Notes:

The members of the Guardians can now start posting their arrivals to Karn’s Keep as I explained in the last New Frontiers update. The New Frontiers game will continue chronicling the events that lead up to your arrival in Karn’s Keep, while post arrival will be covered here in Cynalon Knights.

While some of the characters have not been to Karn’s Keep before, everyone has had a character her before, so I didn’t go into any great detail about the place. There’s a write up on it in the Maps section of the private area.

Lady Gabriella:
Validar listens to Gabriella's comments and mulls them about momentarily. "I agree that Sir Acerion seems well suited to be Lady Ardel's husband and therefore the new Baron of Stone Ridge. However, he has commented to me about a lack of political experience as well. And it is a moot point, as he has declared his love for Lady Ivy of Azrella and the two have plans to be wed sometime in the future."
“Then it’s another case of an obvious solution being thrown aside by reality. Ah, if only people would behave more like we wished them to.”
“He does seem an ideal mate given those words,” Lady Gabriella states. “I might even find him intriguing based on that!”

After all, the decision is hers, foremost. If Sir Corley is in the vanguard of the recovery of Stone Ridge, I do believe that he would deserve such a reward for his devotion and duty, both to the Lady Ardel and to the King."
“Let us hope that she decides wisely when and if the time comes.”
“That is a battle that many nobles wage. Doing what is best for the Kingdom as a whole or doing what is best to for themselves. It seems to me that too many of the later and not enough of the former is what has led us to our current situation. Too many people out for personal power grabs instead of doing what is best for all.”

Later on, Lady Gabriella is mildly surprised to learn that Validar and Acerion’s companions have come to Karn’s Keep instead of Pyris. She’ll accompany Validar when he goes to greet them and will say her own hellos.

Sir Corley:

The Stone House opens once more and Sir Corley leads his steed out into an almost unimaginably giant hall. He’s stunned for a moment, taking in the sheer size of the structure he finds himself in. He knew that Karn’s Keep was large, but he never imagined that it was this large!

After finally tearing his eyes away from the distant ceiling, Sir Corley notes that many individuals are present. A stable boy takes the reins of this mount and promises to lead him off to the Keep’s stable. Directions are given food and drink and resting chambers are handed out.

Sir Corley will speak to anyone he is familiar with in the hallway while awaiting Acerion and Validar’s arrival.

Upon seeing Sir Acerion, Sir Corley will grasp hands and congratulate his friend on the success of their mission. “I am looking forward to hearing all the details when time permits.”

Corley spots Validar and his lady next. He’ll gallantly kiss Lady Allonica’s hand and grasp hands with Validar.

“What this I hear about you being a Baron now? Being a Knight wasn’t good enough for you?” Corley asks in a good-natured tone.

“I assume that we have much to discuss since we were summoned from Fort Fletcher.”

Argent

Argent:

Once within the grand hall at Karn’s Keep, Argent will help by pointing out the locations of areas of interests.

“The shrines are beyond that door over in the corner. The kitchen is that way. Those interested in the mage library, just follow me!”

Argent leads the way to the great library on the second floor of the keep.

Along the way, Argent stops to greet her mentor, Lady Salavarian. The two exchange words and promise to talk more the coming day.

“Here it is! The towers continue up beyond this point. Each has its own laboratory and private quarters to it. There’s plenty to explore. But I think I’m going to catch up on my sleep first. It’s been a very long day.”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Ivy:

Ivy is amazed at the sight that awaits us upon leaving the Stone House. There’s a great deal of confusion as we come forth with those already there. Things are pointed out, but it mostly goes over Ivy’s head. Argent points in the direction of the Shrines and Ivy does glance that way, but she’s mainly on the lookout for someone else.

Much to her surprise, Elspeth is here! Ivy makes her way over and hugs her best friend and will speak to her, all the while keeping her eyes open.

“Elspeth! It is so good to see you again. What brings you here?”

Finally once she sees Sir Acerion enter the hall, Ivy will seek him out immediately. She should be angry for him rushing off on some dangerous quest, but she can’t find it in her heart right now. Instead Ivy will grab on to Acerion tightly and simply enjoy the closeness.

“I’ve missed you so,” she’ll finally say.

Acerion

Sir Acerion:

Having finished up his conversations and dispatched notes to his mother and grandmother, Acerion spent a good amount of his time at the temple. He was on his way back when he heard news that Silvarn had returned and brought his other companions here! Making his way into the hall, he is almost immediately greeted by Sir Corley.

Upon seeing Sir Acerion, Sir Corley will grasp hands and congratulate his friend on the success of their mission. “I am looking forward to hearing all the details when time permits.”

"Well met, once again," Acerion replies, dressed simply in his robes, and returns the handshake. "Indeed it is quite the tale to tell, but I imagine mine is not the only story that shall be shared."

He spots Ivy and pats Corley on the shoulder with a knowing smile and excuses himself.

“I’ve missed you so,” she’ll finally say.

Acerion smiles as Ivy gets close and wraps her up in his arms, lifting her off her feet for a moment. Setting her down, he kisses her softly upon the forehead.

"My every thought has been of you since we have been apart," He says, still holding her in his arms.

He doesn't say anything else, instead gazing into her eyes for a long time. Finally Acerion comes to his senses, "Is there anything you need, or the others?"

"It looks like Argent isn't one for reunions," he says with a chuckle, upon seeing her heading off somewhere immediately. Acerion will greet any of the others that come by or say hello.

Once reunions are complete, he will look once more to Ivy, "There is much for us to catch up on, but everyone looks exhausted. Would you rather wait until the morning?"

Baron validar of Pyris -

Duke Corun:

“That will be his test as a ruler. Let us hope that he’s up to the challenge.”

"Yes, and let us assist him in meeting that challenge as much as possible."

“I agree, the shields are not needed right now, but one day they will. It would behoove us to have them on hand and ready to use as opposed to needed them while half of them remain missing.”

"That would be the ideal situation. I have assembled a group of my previous adventuring partners that may be able to assist with that endeavor. I am sure that there are many tasks they will need to fulfill, but this will be a needed mission soon enough."

Gabriella:
Validar listens to Gabriella's comments and mulls them about momentarily. "I agree that Sir Acerion seems well suited to be Lady Ardel's husband and therefore the new Baron of Stone Ridge. However, he has commented to me about a lack of political experience as well. And it is a moot point, as he has declared his love for Lady Ivy of Azrella and the two have plans to be wed sometime in the future."

“Then it’s another case of an obvious solution being thrown aside by reality. Ah, if only people would behave more like we wished them to.”

"Indeed. I lamented the thought for a moment when it became obvious that Sir Acerion had his heart captured by Lady Ivy. But we must be happy for our friends and not simply use them as pawns in our plans, shouldn't we?", Validar asks rhetorically. "They would make an ideal political combination."

"However, Sir Corley, fortunately, has interest as well and I would think that Lady Vera would have no other suitor as worthy as my dear friend."

“He does seem an ideal mate given those words,” Lady Gabriella states. “I might even find him intriguing based on that!”

"And well you should," Validar responds evenly, but with the hint of a smile. "He is a fine man and a desirable husband."

"In the end, it may be a matter of who wins Lady Ardel's hand.

"Which is why I would like you to perhaps help to further ingraciate the young knight further into Lady Ardel's good graces. Sir Corley can be a bit shy, when it comes to the fairer sex. Perhaps you could arrange a dinner with just the four of us, once we are back in Pyris."

"I do not want to let the situation play itself out and then see someone else sneak into the position due simply to quick wit and a sharp tongue or worse. Once Stone Ridge is recovered, the suitors for Lady Ardel will flock to her."

“That is a battle that many nobles wage. Doing what is best for the Kingdom as a whole or doing what is best to for themselves. It seems to me that too many of the later and not enough of the former is what has led us to our current situation. Too many people out for personal power grabs instead of doing what is best for all.”

"It is a dilemma. And in the situation that the Kingdom has been in, it is only natural to try to gain what you can yourself. The Kingdom has been fractured for some time now. We do truly need to make alliances that are true and valid and not political niceties. Cynalon must be united once more."

"And yet it is also a fine line, especially now. How many will profit from our efforts who do not deserve to do so? How many have taken advantage of others to gain their own power?" Validar sighs for a moment. "Sir Alon thinks we could be headed for a civil war. I do not desire it, but for the sake of true recovery and a fresh start, I almost wish it to come. It is terrible to say, but in the long run the Kingdom will be better off."

New Arrivals...

Post by Validar »

Baron Validar of Pyris -

Staff from Karn's Keep lets the Baron and Lady Gabriella know that Silvarn has arrived her at the Keep with visitors. Surprised, since he thought they would be meeting tomorrow in Pyris, Validar will lead his lady down to the main courtyard.

Corley spots Validar and his lady next. He’ll gallantly kiss Lady Allonica’s hand and grasp hands with Validar.

“What's this I hear about you being a Baron now? Being a Knight wasn’t good enough for you?” Corley asks in a good-natured tone.

“I assume that we have much to discuss since we were summoned from Fort Fletcher.”

"There have been many changes and our assault was a success. Obviously yours was as well, as I see everyone is well. My father has been declared Duke of the new Elcadan, which passes the rulership of Pyris to his son. I always knew that it would happen one day, but I am still getting accustomed to the thought of ruling my ancestral lands."

"There is much to do and many conversations. I wish to hear how the assault on the Cold Maiden's citadel went, as well. But each of you should make yourselves at home and get some food. As we will not be heading to Pyris until the following morning, we have some time to begin our planning discussions. I had planned to have all our conversations then, but this may save us some time."

Validar will greet the rest of the Guardians, those that don't run off right away anyway. He will also introduce the members of the Seekers that have joined up with them either this evening or in the morning, depending on their availability.

He witnesses Sir Acerion and Ivy's reuniting with a smile and notices that a smiling Lady Gabriella takes his and as well and squeezes it slightly.

A new chapter is about to begin for them. Validar will take the time to join any of those needing a meal and discuss the battles they recently fought.

Yusef:

Emerging from the Stone House, Yusef finds that there are many there to greet them. Some appear familiar, but many don't. Since Silvarn has put forth his request for an audience, he will wait patiently for a response. In the meantime,Yusef will greet those he knows and look for opportunities to introduce himself to those he doesn't. However, his shyness gets the best of him and he doesn't make much progress.

“While I do not desire such a thing as too many innocents will perish while the nobles struggle for power, it would effectively remove those who are undesirable. Like cutting down dead limbs from a tree. I only wish there was another way.”

Lady Gabriella will continue to be near Baron Validar’s side and will be friendly and cordial to all she meets.

“There will be time for the sharing of tales,” Corley agrees. “At a more suitable moment.”

Sir Corley excuses himself to allow his fellow knight to be reunited with his lady.
“A pleasure to see you again, Sir Corley,” Lady Gabriella says with an easy smile.
“I assure you, milady, the honor and privilege is mine.”
Baron Validar wrote:"There have been many changes and our assault was a success. Obviously yours was as well, as I see everyone is well. “Ah, of course. Then congratulations are to be accorded to you, my friend. May you rule wisely for many years to come.”
Baron Validar wrote:"There is much to do and many conversations. I wish to hear how the assault on the Cold Maiden's citadel went, as well. But each of you should make yourselves at home and get some food. We will be heading to Pyris in the morning. I had planned to have all our conversations then anyway."
“The tale is an amazing one. The Lady Silvarn did transport us to a place she dubbed the Ice Palace, and truly no other description could do the place justice. It was a vast fortress seemingly carved from ice!”

“But I get ahead of myself. Shortly after you and Sir Acerion departed, we were assaulted by a horde of ice zombie orcs. The undead were no match for the defenses of the fortress and were easily thrown back. Later did we learn that the servants of the Cold One did use an artifact called the Heart of Winter to transform the horde we sought to intercept into icy zombies.”

“After this attack, there came another, this time the enemy was ice creatures much like we fought on the Streel Plains while in the company of the fair Kharyna. There were ice soldiers and icy gargoyles that dropped the enemy unto the battlements of the fortress itself! The battle raged fiercely, until we finally got a break. One of the elves spotted a dark haired sorceress outside in the storm directing the enemy forces!”

“The Lady Argent was dispatched and using her magicks force this ice sorceress to flee. With her gone, the enemy forces broke apart and the danger had passed.”

“It was after this that Lady Silvarn did arrive with her reports of locating the Ice Palace. I realized that we had an opportunity to take the battle to the enemy and most likely catch them unawares. The Fortress was distant and isolated. It would be difficult for an army to march upon it, so a small strike team seemed the most suitable method of dealing with this threat. The Lady Silvarn did take us to the Ice Palace using her wondrous magicks.”

“As befitting the name, the cold was bitter and brutal. The palace was wholly composed of ice and the footing was treacherous. We were deposited at the top of the highest tower and from there we began our descent. The Ice Palace was enormous, but strangely showed little signs of habilitation. We later learned that the Ice Palace was created by the Heart of Winter and its size was a reflection of the ego of that foul goddess.”

“As we moved deeper into the palace, we came across two unusual girls. They wore the garb of the enemy and seemed to be a mixed ancestry, much like our friend Yusef. The two were not skilled combatants and they were overpowered easily by the monk’s unarmed combat style. The Lady Lyonessa used magic to gain the trust of one of the girls and thus did we learn more about this place.”

“The High Priestess was a woman named Mina. The Ice Sorceress who attacked the fort was named Kalandor, and the girls we captured were Mina’s daughters, Nina and Anya. They were all the living beings that dwelled in the Ice Palace. After learning what we could, we restrained the sisters and continued onward.”

“The Ice Sorceress Kalandor was fought next and while she proved difficult, she was slain in honorable combat. From there we reached the main floor of the palace and located the temple dedicated to that cold fiend. Innumerable Ice Warriors were present, including the Mina herself. We planned our assault, but it was all a deception crafted by Mina. While our forces were divided, she attacked our rear flank revealing her true form in the process. Mina was an Ice Devil! We had assumed that the sisters father was the lower planes being, but it was the mother.”

“In spite of our being out maneuvered, we were able to wound the beast and force it to flee. We located the real temple and were prepared to act when Mina returned with her brood. This time we were prepared and the Ice Devil fell when it came into contact with Lord Chareos, who had sheathed himself in magical fire. With Mina banished, the sisters surrendered.”

“Then came the worst part of this mission, the long wait until Lady Silvarn’s return. During this time, the Cold One did cast out Anya from her faith for asking too many questions. Lady Silvarn did indicate that her ‘race’ has had many dealings with the Cold One as they prefer the same climates. She did volunteer to take charge of the sisters and also see to the destruction of the Heart of Winter.”

“Earlier at Fort Fletcher, Lady Silvarn did enlighten us about the King’s decision regarding the vile Deville family. Yusef has ties to the Deville family and so wished to present himself to the King for his judgment. He did mention knowing of a summer home that family had far from Elcadan. It seems as the most likely place to search for those who fled Elcadan.”

“Thus it was that Lady Silvarn did bring us here, as opposed to Pyris. I assume that our presence was requested for the purpose of tracking the demonic Deville’s?”

Sir Acerion:

“There will be time for the sharing of tales,” Corley agrees. “At a more suitable moment.”

"Of course," Acerion replies, noting that he isn't the only one moving on to see someone else.

We are well,” Ivy reports. “Other than being tired of the cold.”

"I am glad none of you suffered horribly from the cold and that it is now over," Acerion says grimly, the thought of her or any of his friends freezing to death haunting his thoughts for a moment.

“I couldn’t sleep without talking some more. Please, can we just retire to your chambers and be together some more?”

"Very well, I would not dream to deny such a request of my lady," Acerion says, leading Ivy back to his chambers.

Once there, he will pull Ivy close and hold her, not needing to share any word, but just to be alone in her pressence. Eventually the two will step apart, and he will make room, moving his armor and weapons so that she may relax. Acerion will find a place to sit next to her.

"I heard some of what Sir Corley was saying as we departed, it sounds like you all had your hands full," Acerion prompts, seeing if that's what Ivy wishes to talk about.
