The temple to Hextor has fallen, the sacrifices rescued, and the heroes returned to Karn’s Keep to unwind. A place to rest and food are readily available. Discussions abound.
Baron Validar/King
"Thank you, my King," Validar responds. "I have been a voracious student of our history and deeply involved in learning about the workings of our kingdom. And I am proud of being Cynalonian and I am certain that you will be a King we will all have reason to be proud of."
“I’ve studied our history as well, particularly that of my ancestors. In fact, much of my equipment was cobbled together from our previous kings. This sword was used by Victor the First himself. The armor belonged originally to Victor the Second. My family does not believe in burying equipment with their owners, but instead that they be passed along so that future generations can make the best use of them.”
The King holds up a dark metallic blue sword so that Validar can see it. “With this very sword, Victor the First forged a Kingdom. I’ll be damned if I see it fall during my reign. Not only do I feel the weight of my position, but literally the weight borne by past kings themselves.”
"I do agree that destinies are to be grabbed and fought for and not a matter of pre-determination. I have thought long about mine and that is why I may seem prepared with easy answers. I hope to be a force of good to assist the Kingdom in regaining its former glory as well."
“There is a need for such men of vision as yourself. The road to restoration will be a long and difficult one. Nothing worthwhile and nothing that will stand the test of time ever is otherwise. There will be much honor and great rewards for those who help make this dream come true.”
“And congratulations on your betrothal to the Lady Allonica. You make a fine couple and I have come to trust her council over the years. I trust you will do the same.”
Validar will thank his ex-Seeker companion for his assistance in the battle. "You are a fine fighter and a good friend, Blod."
“Never dull with you, Sir Clang!” Blod says with a toothy grin. “What we do next?”
Baron Validar/Araduin:
Araduin is located in the Mage Guild Library. “Lord Sharadin graciously granted me membership to the Mage Guild here. I’m busily attempting to rebuild my spell books. With the huge selection here, my magic will be more potent than ever before.”
"I would like to offer you the opportunity to work with me and to continue to right the wrongs that exist in our lands. There is much to do in our lands, with the reclamation of Elcadan. And I am honor bound to free Stone Ridge as well. I certainly have need of strong allies such as yourself and I can certainly promise that you will not be bored. Coupled with the fact that the Seekers are away on a long ocean voyage, it would give you a chance to continue your adventures."
“Boredom is not something one experiences while riding with you,” Araduin agrees. “We made a pact while members of the Seekers to work for the greater good. I see no reason to break my word at this point. Give me a few days to rebuild my spellbook and I’ll be ready to accompany you once more.”
Baron Validar/Dar Thaltus:
Dar is located in a large storage area on the 3rd floor of the Keep. (Area #4.) An impromptu archery range has been set up here previously. (Back when the Elfquest gang was here.) The Ranger of Ehlonna is practicing his archery skills.
“That is much the reason I left the Elfholds to begin with, my friend. To right those wrongs that exist and to spread the teachings of Ehlonna. My personal mission has not changed. Let us continue on our chosen path.”
"We will be here for a short time, but certainly will be returning to Pyris as soon as we are able. Please be certain to retrieve any of those who did not go on the assault as well. We will need all of my friends and subordinates in the coming days. Thank you again for your continued assistance in the battles we have faced. I am honored to fight beside you."
“It’s my pleasure to assist your people in your time of need. That is what my race does. It may take a day or two for us to reach Castle Pyris, but we will be there eventually. My magic is nearly spent for this day, so we’ll be there tomorrow at the earliest.”
Baron Validar/Sir Alon:
In between the conversation, negotiations and debriefings, Validar will take some time to engage in a little martial practice with his old mentor Sir Alon.
After the mock combat is completed and Validar sees a couple of tricks and skills that Sir Alon uses more closely, the two have a conversation about the future and their plans.
"I look forward to having the Squire candidates arrive in Pyris, as well as the upcoming meetings with the Order of the Griffon. Although it seems as though there will be plenty of duties to keep us all busy for the foreseeable future. Still, if you could, please keep your time free for sometime in late spring. Lady Gabriella and I would be most pleased if you could join us for an momentous event, somewhere in that time frame."
"But in the meantime, we have many tasks on a grand scale to complete. Where do your travels take you next, Sir Alon?"
“Then it seems that congratulations are in order, my former pupil.” Sir Alon says with a hearty handshake and a wide grin. “The Lady Allonica will make a fine bride. It seems that the future of Pyris is now secured. May you have many strong children to carry its tradition into the future.”
“My immediate path will be to return to the Order Hall and put things into order there. I will be sending you, along with Sir Acerion and Sir Corley, the squire candidates that we previously discussed. There are also many of the Order that I will need to speak with. Much has transpired these last few days that they need to be informed about.”
In a much lower voice, Sir Alon will say, “It is my fear that the sudden change in the rulership of the Crown and our new goals will not sit well with those who were pleased with the way things were. There will also be those who will feel anger for not being part of the new king’s plans. I foresee dark times ahead where not only the Order, but also the very kingdom may be split apart. I need to determine those among the Order who I can rely upon should that dark day occur. So, in a certain sense, I will be working to gather allies amongst the Order and identify potential enemies.”
After changing and cleaning up, Sir Acerion visits the Heironeous shrine at the temple to pray and meditate. He’s not surprised to find Crysania also there. The Priestess has also cleaned up and now just wears her simple robes. Looking up, Crysania smiles upon seeing Sir Acerion.
“Please join me,” Crysania says gesturing to a place beside her. “I’ve had much to contemplate these last few hours. With Drakkimor no more, for the first time in many years my own personal course is now in doubt. I understand that Oran will be departing to assist his people recover their lost holdings in the Ardelphia region.”
“I have called Elcadan my home these last few years and now I wish to help make it stable once more. I guess what I am saying is that I wish to offer my services to you and your companions. There is much good we can accomplish in that part of the world. Would you have me?”
Sir Acerion/Dame Sharl & the King:
Still later, the Royal Couple will speak with Sir Acerion. Dame Sharl will give Acerion a hug, while the King offers a hearty handshake.
“You are to be congratulated,” Dame Sharl says. “We have heard how you defeated Xanathom single-handedly. That is quite a feat. You’ve certainly earned a name amongst our order on this day. Not to mention gained a great deal of infamy amongst our enemy. No doubt there will be those who will seek revenge for your actions this day. Watch your back.”
“You have done a great service to the Kingdom, Sir Acerion”, the King states. “If there is anything that you wish and if I have the ability to grant it, then it is yours. One day your ancestral lands will be freed. This I promise you.”
Validar will check in with the recovering Duke of Corunglain to see how he is faring, as well as the status of the rest of the rescued nobles.
"I am pleased that everyone made it through their considerable ordeal as well as they did. The situation in Corunglain looked bleak for some time, but now it has been turned in our favor. The invading forces of humanoids have been thwarted, driven back and destroyed. The Forts have been reclaimed and there should soon be progress in recovering Hammerfall."
"In addition, my adventuring group, the Guardians of Light, are currently confronting a stronghold of the Cold Maiden not far from Fort Fletcher, which, when they are successful, should relieve us of some of the oppressive weather we have been having this winter. Coupled with the victory that we have had in New Keln, we have eliminated a potential thorn in the Kingdom's side, including one that has befallen your duchy for some time."
"Rennydale is restored, the humanoid invasion thwarted, the Hextorites smashed, the forts recovered and more progress mounts daily. While we have our own issues to deal with due to the changes in Elcadan, Pyris remains committed to strengthening the power in western Cynalon and we shall continue our efforts to recover the dwarven holds, as well as assist the Lady Ardel to free Ardelphia and all of Stone Ridge."
“Words cannot express my gratitude for your actions, Baron Validar,” a tired looking Duke will say. “For days now, I thought everything my family worked so hard for were gone. But now, they are still there. Perhaps beaten and worn, but Corunglain still stands. Your efforts on my behalf and indeed for the entire Duchy are most noble and commendable. Rest assured that you will have the full support of Corunglain in your efforts in the Western Kingdom.”
King's Meetings:
Later that night, the King will hold court with his advisors. There’s little in the way of new business. Merely an update to the current situation and how your forces are going to be divided up. Lord Sharadin and Silvarn will be departing to continue the hunt for other Ember Clones that might exist. The King and Dame Sharl will be departing for Athenos to bring the Duke up to date on things and award him his new territories. Lady Sallavarian will be accompanying Duke Relon on his ride to Elcadan.
Some of the Magic Items that were recovered have been Identified. Here’s the gear used by the late Xanathom. Hasverion would not permit her armor or one of her rings to be taken. They were both dedicated to Hextor and were evil in nature. They were both destroyed when the lava cleansed the former Hextor temple.
Ring of Fire Resistance
Boots of Stamina: Provides +3 to CON when worn.
And here are her six swords:
Death Scream: Longsword +2. Delivers 1d4 Sonic Damage with a successful hit.
Ilbratha: Longsword +1. Can cast Mirror Image 1/day.
Arbane: Longsword +2. Wielder is immune to Hold Spells.
Blade of Roses: Longsword +3. +2 to Charisma
Adjaha the Drinker: Longsword +2. Wielder is immune to Charm and Domination Spells. Functions as a Ring of Vampiric Regeneration. (Wielder is healed for half the damage he does.)
Warblade: Longsword +4
As the person who defeated Xanathom, Sir Acerion would have the first choice of any of these items, next would be those who were among the group he was with.
"Indeed. In the meantime, allow me to introduce two more of my old Seeker companions: Dar Thaltus and Araduin. They disappeared soon after the siege of Gateway and were found inside the vile temple of Hextor in New Keln," Validar says, indicating the two elves. "Gentlemen, please make yourselves at home. I am sure the hospitality here is quite good. We will talk soon."
“A pleasure to meet you, gentlemen,” Lady Allonica says with an easy smile, curtseying as she does so. “Any friends of Validar’s are friends of mine. Yes, please partake of the hospitality here. There are numerous private rooms to be had and there’s large spread in the dining hall if you’re hungry.”
Validar takes his betrothed's arm as she leads him to a private chamber. Validar looks about at the size of the place, but the furnishings are normal sized. An odd juxtaposition, he thinks absentmindedly.
Once inside, Validar begins to remove his weapons, shield and tabard first. He discards the burnt and dust-filled garment in a proper manner, folding it and setting it on the fire. It does sport his coat of arms, after-all and is worthy of proper respect. Then he begins to remove his armor, with some help from his lady, as he retells the tale.
“Alas we have no servants here to assist in this task,” Lady Gabriella states wistfully. “I’ll assist as best as I am able, beloved. Please do tell your tale.”
"In doing so, we came across several men who were under the Hextorite's thrall, including my elfin friends, Dar Thatus and Araduin. After freeing them from the mental control that ensnarled them, as well as the other misfortunate’s that were there continuing to make the vile mind-numbing zonga potion, we located the terrible Hellpit."
“That sounds very much like the same potion that was used against Gateway last summer,” Lady Gabriella notes. “It was quite horrid as I recall.”
"But Sir Acerion had an unexpected strategy. Since his protective aura existed while he remained alive, I felt that it was worth the trying and indeed it turned out for the best. I have had my suspicions that there was more to Sir Acerion than his considerable powers granted by Heironeous and I was correct. His father is in fact a Deva," Validar pauses, letting that information sink in. "He is an angel of Heironeous. No wonder the Shield of Justice chose Acerion to be the artifact's bearer."
“I always thought there was something unusual about Sir Acerion, but could not put my finger on it. There is such an innate sense of goodness from it. It must be his otherworldly blood coming to the forefront.”
"That allows us to turn our attention inward for a time and focus on the restoration and reclaiming of Elcadan, as well as the freeing of Stone Ridge. There is still much to do, but we should be freer to pursue these tasks without one enemy dogging our heels. Still I feel that the Hextorites were only one pawn in this overall conflict that besets Cynalon. There were other factions involved in the attack in Corunglain and there are likely more than that still unseen. We may have only defeated the next enemy of many."
“But it should secure the eastern lands for a time, since the Hextorites were the primary threat there. Now the Kingdom as a whole can concentrate on the Western Lands for the first time since the Great War.”
"Still, it is good to be back in your presence. The King has briefings and meetings to conduct and to be certain there are many that I would like to conduct myself. We need to acquire for ourselves as many allies as possible. However, I do hope that we will have some few moments to share alone that do not involve strategy sessions, planning offensives, scheming to thwart our enemies or fabricating contingencies."
“Now we are entering my realm of expertise. Forging alliances and gaining allies. Yes, there is much work to be done, but it will all be necessary. It will take much of our time today, but tomorrow and after we are wedded there will be more time for us.”
Later, he will meet with both Zynara and Blod, with Gabriella's assistance.
Validar will once again ask Zynara if she is interested in moving into the Western Kingdom. He will ask what it would take to entice them, from offering the position of High Magister of Pyris to a remodeling of the Mage Guild in Elcadan, from starting a new mage guild to anything else she may think of (or that Gabriella might add)
Zynara reiterates her desire to remain at Karn’s Keep, but she and Gabriella depart to discuss the matter in private. Upon returning, Zynara agrees to make the move to Castle Pyris.
“I just have a way with people,” she says with a smile.
"Greetings, Serena of Mystra," the Baron will say. "It is good to see you again this evening. Especially under much less pressing terms." Validar and Gabriella had just finished their evening meal together, when Serena arrived. "I would like to present to you the Lady Gabriella Allonica. Gabriella, this is Serena, an Inquisitor of Mystra."
“Well met, Lady Gabriella,” Serena will easily say. “It is more relaxed here this evening, without the threat of battle hanging over our heads.”
"Elcadan is a place in the midst of serious flux to be certain, Serena. While my father, the Duke, is the ruler of these lands, in truth, we have much to do to recover them. The Merchant Guild leaders are a mixed lot and certainly there are some members or those in their employ who use magick for evil and woe. Coupled with the fact that demons and devils have inhabited the lands, as well as replacing the former rulers, there is much for which we could use your assistance."
"Elcadan needs to be brought back under proper control both for the stability of the region as well as for the plight of her citizens. We would be quite pleased if you would join us on our journey to Elcadan and assist us in defeating the enemy there."
“I would be happy to assist. Elcadan is among the places I wished to visit, so this course of action is beneficial to us both.”
"As for the mention of the older temple, I believe that perhaps is a place being explored by an associate of mine. Her name is Kharyna and she is a follower of Mystra as well. I understand she was also a pupil of my cousin, the Lady Jallarzi Sallavarian. The location for this site is near the Barony of Stone Ridge. This is a place that we also seek to recover and drive the enemy humanoids from the land. If Kharyna is successful in recovering what she called the Towers of Magic or Gaz's Towers, then with the humanoids destroyed, the region could undergo an influx of great learning and prosperity."
“It was not the Tower of Magic of which I spoke, but it is an understandable conclusion to reach, Baron. I have learned from the Lady Sallavarian, that an older Mystran temple complete with a library was unearthed to the south of Elcadan. The discovery was unearthed by a young Mystran by the name of Gloriana along with a follower of Felix named Kaylin. Felix is a lesser-known associate to Mystra. Felixians are both the guardians and recoverers of lost knowledge. This temple is of special interest as it appears to pre-date your Kingdom.”
“The Tower of Magic is of special significance to we Mystrans. It is the primary temple for Mystran worship and training. Alphatia had one, but it was destroyed over a thousand years ago. No one has been able to rebuild one since that time.”
“I take it that you know this Kharyna then? What can you tell me about her? I honestly suspect that the reason my home church sent me to this land was to see if Kharyna was worthy of such an honor as being the one who restores the glory of the Tower of Magic. I have no issue with Kharyna myself and if Mystra has deemed her the one to restore the Tower of Magic, then who am I to disagree? However, there are many of my associates who do not see things that way. They would have the temple rise again in Alphatian, not here in these less civilized lands.”
“Regardless, it would be a place I would like to visit. Even in its faded state, it must be a grand sight.”
“I will accompany you when you leave for Elcadan. Let me know when we depart.”
King Victor VIII: “I’ve studied our history as well, particularly that of my ancestors. In fact, much of my equipment was cobbled together from our previous kings. This sword was used by Victor the First himself. The armor belonged originally to Victor the Second. My family does not believe in burying equipment with their owners, but instead that they be passed along so that future generations can make the best use of them.”
"Yes, I have read the stories about our previous Kings. When done properly it is certainly of continued significance in further promoting the rule of Cynalon, both martial and political."
The King holds up a dark metallic blue sword so that Validar can see it. “With this very sword, Victor the First forged a Kingdom. I’ll be damned if I see it fall during my reign. Not only do I feel the weight of my position, but literally the weight borne by past kings themselves.”
Validar is in awe for a moment as he sees the weapon that helped to originally forge Cynalon. The dark blue metal holds his gaze for a long moment, and the words "Star Metal", barely escape from his lips. After a long pause, he catches himself once more. "It is a wondrous weapon and a true artifact of our kingdom. May it serve you as well as it served King Victor I."
"Cynalon will not fall during your realm or ever. We have experienced some dark days and we shall rise from the darkness. Already the light of a new day begins to dawn over our realms. With each passing victory we will further establish ourselves as a glorious kingdom." And more, Validar cannot help but think, even if only to himself.
“There is a need for such men of vision as yourself. The road to restoration will be a long and difficult one. Nothing worthwhile and nothing that will stand the test of time ever is otherwise. There will be much honor and great rewards for those who help make this dream come true.”
"We are in agreement, milord. The road may be long and arduous, but it is worthwhile and it will be spectacular when the results are fully witnessed. My sword is ever at your disposal."
“And congratulations on your betrothal to the Lady Allonica. You make a fine couple and I have come to trust her council over the years. I trust you will do the same.”
"Ah, you are most kind, my King. We have not had the time as yet to formally announce our engagement and in truth I would like to see the situation in Elcadan under better control before we do so."
"I value your trust in her and I have placed my entire trust in my lady as well."
Blod: “Never dull with you, Sir Clang!” Blod says with a toothy grin. “What we do next?”
"That is an interesting question, my large friend," Validar responds, smiling himself due to Blod's infectious enthusiasm. "I suppose we need to speak to Zynara to find the answer. I would welcome you and your family to join us in Pyris and assist in our efforts to control the lands of Elcadan."
Araduin: Araduin is located in the Mage Guild Library. “Lord Sharadin graciously granted me membership to the Mage Guild here. I’m busily attempting to rebuild my spell books. With the huge selection here, my magic will be more potent than ever before.”
"Lord Sharadin is a fine man and a wise one as well. The more members there, the more opportunity for everyone to inrease their knowledge and their power. I am certain there is much with which you will be able to bolster your magickal prowess."
“Boredom is not something one experiences while riding with you,” Araduin agrees. “We made a pact while members of the Seekers to work for the greater good. I see no reason to break my word at this point. Give me a few days to rebuild my spellbook and I’ll be ready to accompany you once more.”
"Funny, you are the second person to tell me the very thing this day. But all jesting aside, I am very thankful for your commitment to our friendship and to adding your abilities to our cause." Validar offers the elfin mage his hand. "We shall delay our departure for a few days and then make our way to Pyris. I only wish that more of the Seekers could be gathered again, but they are either away or departed from the group."
Dar Thaltus: Dar is located in a large storage area on the 3rd floor of the Keep. (Area #4.) An impromptu archery range has been set up here previously. (Back when the Elfquest gang was here.) The Ranger of Ehlonna is practicing his archery skills.
"Greetings, my elfin friend," Validar states. "It seems that your skill with the bow has not dimemd since we last adventured together."
“That is much the reason I left the Elfholds to begin with, my friend. To right those wrongs that exist and to spread the teachings of Ehlonna. My personal mission has not changed. Let us continue on our chosen path.”
"Very good. I am pleased to have you join the mission. You shall not be bored," Validar says with the grin of an inside joke. "It is unfortunate that more of the Seekers could not be reunited. However, Arocken has also joined me in my new travels. And we have many other powerful friends as well."
Silvarn: “It’s my pleasure to assist your people in your time of need. That is what my race does. It may take a day or two for us to reach Castle Pyris, but we will be there eventually. My magic is nearly spent for this day, so we’ll be there tomorrow at the earliest.”
"That is not a problem. We will need a couple days to complete everything here anyway. I do not expect to be back in Pyris until perhaps the day after tomorrow."
Sir Alon: “Then it seems that congratulations are in order, my former pupil.” Sir Alon says with a hearty handshake and a wide grin. “The Lady Allonica will make a fine bride. It seems that the future of Pyris is now secured. May you have many strong children to carry its tradition into the future.”
"Thank you for your wishes and your blessing. While it has not been formally announced, I would be honored to have you in attendance and with all that is likely to be happening I thought it better to make the situation known now. We will make a formal announcment sometime in the future."
"I would like to believe that Pyris is in good hands," Validar says with a smile. "While I have much to learn, I am an avid student and I have a superb negotiator by my side. Duke Relon is a fine politician as well, so I can learn much from my father and my dealings with and for him. I will certainly do my best to live up to everyone's expectations and also to fulfill the dreams I have for Pyris and for Cynalon."
“My immediate path will be to return to the Order Hall and put things into order there. I will be sending you, along with Sir Acerion and Sir Corley, the squire candidates that we previously discussed. There are also many of the Order that I will need to speak with. Much has transpired these last few days that they need to be informed about.”
"That does make much sense. I look forward to the day when the Order is able to convene properly. We will be awaiting the squire candidates. I wonder if these youngsters will have any idea what they are getting themselves in for?"
"But it is true. There is much that has happened and much more likely to happen in the coming days and weeks. The Kingdom has managed to subdue three enemies, but there are many more about."
"Indeed," Validar resonds quietly, leaning in to listen and to return his thoughts privately. He considers Sir Alon's words carefully, not having considered the thought of civil war outside of Elcadan very deeply. "With hope some of those who are only interested in power and gain will see the removal of the Hextorite threat as an opportunity to make territory gains in the Eastern Frontier. That would deter some possible enemies I would suspect."
"However, I am certain that there are others, more entrenched in their current power and their connections and sway with the previous King who will oppose the changes quite directly. In truth, I would not be surprised if they didn't already work to oppose the changes that we coming from Victor the VIIIth. I worry that much of the conflict and strife may be directed at Elcadan as I would expect the leaders there to be in league with those seeking to keep the status quo as it greatly benefited Elcadan. Please be certain to let me know what you learn and I shall do the same. Knowledge is very important at this stage of the game."
Acerion returns Crysania's smile and sits next to her. He listens attentively as she reveals her thoughts to him. Her final words he is glad to hear as he was hoping this would not be the point where they parted company.
"Of course," Acerion responds. "It will be good to have your strength and devotion with us, and your company would be most welcome as well. Our victory today is but another in a long series of tasks we must accomplish. I wish to eventually free my own ancestral homeland, so I can understand your feelings towards Elcadan."
Dame Sharl and the King:
Still later, the Royal Couple will speak with Sir Acerion. Dame Sharl will give Acerion a hug, while the King offers a hearty handshake.
“You are to be congratulated,” Dame Sharl says. “We have heard how you defeated Xanathom single-handedly. That is quite a feat. You’ve certainly earned a name amongst our order on this day. Not to mention gained a great deal of infamy amongst our enemy. No doubt there will be those who will seek revenge for your actions this day. Watch your back.”
A bit surprised by the embrace, Acerion still manages to return it. He will shake the King's hand firmly.
"Thank you for the kind words and the warning," Acerion replies. "Xanathom was a mighty foe and the battle nearly claimed my own life. It should send a warning to the Hexorites, but I agree with your assesment that there may be spies or assassins lurking in the near future."
“You have done a great service to the Kingdom, Sir Acerion”, the King states. “If there is anything that you wish and if I have the ability to grant it, then it is yours. One day your ancestral lands will be freed. This I promise you.”
"The Gods of Good smile this day, as does my King; there is little more I could ever ask for," Acerion replies. "There is still much for us to do to secure the kingdom, and your promise to free my ancestral lands is quite the boon already. You have my loyalty and my trust, my King, and if you deem I am worthy of something more in the future beyond what you have already blessed me with, then we can discuss it at the appropriate time."
Validar:
Seeking out Validar later in the day, or the following, Acerion shakes the hand of his friend.
"Crysania wishes to join with us," Acerion explains. "With Drakkimor gone and Oran departing, she has turned to Elcadan as her next task. I have already said we would have her and wished to inform you so that as we plan our next moves, you are aware of all of our resources."
"I trust your reunion with the Lady Gabriella went well," Acerion says. "It will be good for these eyes to see Ivy once more. Any news of how our other friends are faring would also be well received."
Turning to depart, Acerion stops, "One last thing before I forget. I wonder if you would be willing to take me on as an apprentice to learn how to properly wield a long sword? I do have skill with other blades, but there is a particular sword we recovered from Xanathom that holds my interest, and it would be ill-fitting for me to carry it but not know how to properly use it."
"Of course we wouldn't have a lot of time now," Acerion continues, "but anything I can pick up from you would be greatly appreciated."
Magical Items:
As the person who defeated Xanathom, Sir Acerion would have the first choice of any of these items, next would be those who were among the group he was with.
Knowing that he is only allowed to use so much magic, Acerion debates over the choices. He is torn between two items, but the paladin finally settles upon the Blade of Roses. There is something intriguing about the blade and he will have to investigate its history once he can seek out a sage.
Should he get a second choice, Acerion will take the Boots of Stamina if they remain available. He also will suggest to Validar that he take the Warblade, but of course the final decision is his.
Acerion: Seeking out Validar later in the day, or the following, Acerion shakes the hand of his friend.
"Crysania wishes to join with us," Acerion explains. "With Drakkimor gone and Oran departing, she has turned to Elcadan as her next task. I have already said we would have her and wished to inform you so that as we plan our next moves, you are aware of all of our resources."
"Very good," Validar responds, during the handshake. "She has formidable power. While we may not see eye-to-eye in personal matters, I am please to hear that she will join our efforts. There is much to do and one of her station will lend us even more credibility with the local people."
"Along those very same lines, Serena the Inquisitor has also deigned to join our ranks in the efforts to control Elcadan. I am certain that her abilities will also come in very useful. The ranks of our allies continue to grow stronger."
"I trust your reunion with the Lady Gabriella went well," Acerion says. "It will be good for these eyes to see Ivy once more. Any news of how our other friends are faring would also be well received."
"Indeed it did. We were not gone long, but it certainly seemed a long time due to the weight of our struggle," Validar responds with a slight smile. "I am certain Ivy will be as pleased to cast her eyes upon you once more as well, my friend. Silvarn is going to retrieve them from the assault on the Cold Maiden's citadel. We will see them when we return to Pyris."
"Once we are there, we should conduct more in depth meetings in regard to our specific plans. I am certain that Duke Relon will have his march on Elcadan planned, but there are many other avenues that must be considered. In addition, I must assemble my own staff for the rule of Pyris. There will be many things that draw our attention inthe coming months, including Stone Ridge and Hammerfall."
"Sir Alon also mentioned to me that he is heading to the Order headquarters to ascertain the situation there. He will be sending the squire candidates to Pyris. He also told us to be watchful, as there are many enemies within the kingdom. I am certain that we are aware of that with the new King ascending to the throne, but until things are stabilized and under control, there is much danger of possible revolt."
"I see no reason why not," Validar answers. "It is like a part of me now," he says, while tapping his scabbard at his side. "I can show you as much as you'd like to know. For indeed, if there is a blade you wish to have, then you should wield it like it deserves."
"I am certain there will be time here and there. It is always useful to practice. I just recently finished a sparring session with Sir Alon himself."
Magic Items:
The personal items of the fallen Head Slug, Xanathom, have been identified and offered us as spoils of victory. Validar is pleased to learn that the items directly dedicated to Hextor have already been destroyed. No need to have them sitting about and causing trouble later.
Validar listens to the items and their names and powers. The Ring of Fire Resistance is always useful, especially with mages and their pesky Fireballs. The Blade of Roses is also interesting as it is a sword much like his own with additional abilities, but the pitch black Adamantine Warblade is what truly catches Validar's eye. It would be a proud day to hold a sword as rare as this.
Sir Acerion is given the first choice as is his due. He mulls about for a moment, but soon makes a decisive decision.
Knowing that he is only allowed to use so much magic, Acerion debates over the choices. He is torn between two items, but the paladin finally settles upon the Blade of Roses. There is something intriguing about the blade and he will have to investigate its history once he can seek out a sage.
"A fine decision, my friend. We shall have to set about its use very soon," Validar says, admiring the fine work along the hilt of the mithril blade.
Should he get a second choice, Acerion will take the Boots of Stamina if they remain available. He also will suggest to Validar that he take the Warblade, but of course the final decision is his.
"You have put words to my thoughts, Sir Acerion. Indeed the Warblade would be my choice, but who is to have the next selection?" Validar asks looking about at the others.
King's Meeting:
Validar is surprised that there is little new business, but everyone has tasks that will be involving them already. With luck, Silvarn and Lord Sharadin will manage to eradicate any more clones of the evil Ember that may remain.
The King and his lady will be heading to Athenos to bestow new lands upon the Duke there. Validar can only hope that he remains a potential ally and that they can be counted on to follwo the Kingdom's new direction.
Validar is also pleased to hear that his cousin, Jallarzi, will be travelling with Duke Relon in his march to Elcadan. Her presence and powers can only be an advantage.
Validar will be returning to Pyris for the moment, to complete his own staff to run the barony and to prepare for the march on Elcadan as well. He looks forward to meeting up with the rest of the Guardians and learning how they fared. He expects the situation there to be stabilized and allow the dwarves to continue their plans to reclaim Hammerfall.
Serena: “Well met, Lady Gabriella,” Serena will easily say. “It is more relaxed here this evening, without the threat of battle hanging over our heads.”
"Yes, we have a moment's respite. We should enjoy it, for soon we shall be back into more intrique, if not outright warfare."
"Very good. We will be pleased to welcome your presence and assistance. I am certain there will be several opportunities to enact your mission among those enemy that remain in Elcadan's lands."
"Ah, interesting," Validar states. "I apologize for the assumption and was not aware of a newly recovered temple in the area. However, it is what I would suspect very good news for your order. Certainly anything that pre-dates King Victor I would be a significant historical find at any rate."
Validar listens to Serena's explanation. Apparently, the recovery of Stone Ridge with the Tower of Magic restored is even more advantageous to everyone, especially to Validar himself. "If anyone seems to have the ability to do so, I would expect Kharyna to be that individual."
Yes, I do know her, to a degree", Validar will add. "She adventured with us for a time, and was very beneficial. She is a powerful individual and her associates make a formidable team. I would not want to oppose them."
"She was the one one destroyed the grip of the Cold Maiden on Neverwinter and she seems to be favored by your patron as well. do not welcome Alphatians meddling in our affairs either, so I hope you are able to convince them that the situation is what it is."
“Regardless, it would be a place I would like to visit. Even in its faded state, it must be a grand sight.”
"Our travels should take us close. If you are still with us when we make our assault on Ardelphia, we will not be far from the Tower's location." Validar does not speak it, since he cannot be entirely certain of Serena's intent. She does not appear to be hostile to Kharyna, but one can never be certain, especially if she is an emmissary for the Alphatians. Validar will try to get word to Kharyna about the situation before it happens.
“I will accompany you when you leave for Elcadan. Let me know when we depart.”
"Very well. We should be leaving the day after tomorrow in the morning. That will give everyone time to rest, recover and to deal with the situations that can be resolved here. Good day."
Gabriella: “A pleasure to meet you, gentlemen,” Lady Allonica says with an easy smile, curtseying as she does so. “Any friends of Validar’s are friends of mine. Yes, please partake of the hospitality here. There are numerous private rooms to be had and there’s large spread in the dining hall if you’re hungry.”
"We will talk later, my friends," he says to the elves. Turning to his woman, he adds, "I think I would like to partake of the meal as well. At least after having some time to unwind."
"I am used to being in the field. As such there are often times when there is no one to help you. Although there are some straps that are particularly difficult to reach by oneself. I will show you what I need released." He begins the tale, as he slowly removes his armor.
“That sounds very much like the same potion that was used against Gateway last summer,” Lady Gabriella notes. “It was quite horrid as I recall.”
"It nearly resulted in the fall of Gateway. The potion numbs the mind and is especially effective against mages and those of higher intellectual capacity. A cowardly way to wage war, I do think."
“I always thought there was something unusual about Sir Acerion, but could not put my finger on it. There is such an innate sense of goodness from it. It must be his otherworldly blood coming to the forefront.”
"Anyone who is a paladin of Heironeous, is a good man, but apparently there is much more to our companion, Sir Acerion. I had noticed something unusual about him as well, but one never knows what an individual may have encountered in this strange world in which we live. He has much favor with Heironeous as well. Acerion will be a powerful ally and I think he will manage to accomplish whatever he will. In truth he seems to be lacking only in confidence. He truly is a humble individual."
"That is true to an extent. I am certain that some will look to the East as an attempt to further their own gains and power. To be honest, were we in a stable situation, I might do the same myself. There is still much good to be done in the Eastern Frontier. However, we must concern ourselves with our own lands and the recovery of Elcadan. I hope the Kingdom will soon be moving as one," he says with a hint of misgiving, but not offering more.
"I will be relying upon your expertise, indeed. Alliances will be needed and allies to be relied upon, both now and in the future. We are at a pivotal time for our lands. However, I am certain that it is joyous for you to be negotiating and planning on behalf of your own lands now. While it is an honor to work for the new King, for certain, there is no comparison to creating something for oneself."
Zynara and Gabriella: Zynara reiterates her desire to remain at Karn’s Keep, but she and Gabriella depart to discuss the matter in private. Upon returning, Zynara agrees to make the move to Castle Pyris.
“I just have a way with people,” she says with a smile.
Validar is at first disappointed at Zynara's rebuttal to his offer, but it is not long before Gabriella has changed her mind. "Very good," he says with a smile, somewhat surprised although pleasantly so that Gabriella was successful where he was not. "We shall be leaving in two days, but you can take your time to arrive in Castle Pyris as you need. We shall have quarters arranged for you and your family."
Validar will make certain to have some time to spend in private with Gabriella, even if it is just meals and some time to rest and converse. Later, he asks her to accompany him on another negotiation.
"My love, I may have need of your formidable skills again. I have not often spoken my plans to any save myself, except what little was necessary to gain assistance. I have thought long and hard about the situation in Stone Ridge and it is no secret that I wish to recover it for the Lady Ardel. However, there is more to it than that."
Validar stands, as he begins to explain himself, opening up a part of him that has been hidden to all is not easy. He paces a bit, collecting his thoughts. "Stone Ridge is a very valuable territory that everyone seems to feel is not worth the trouble to recover or simply beyond the resources of those who wish to do so. Many have attempted to free Ardelphia and to date none have succeeded. I will succeed," he says firmly.
"However, we must balance that against the needs of recovering Elcadan. Therefore, with increased attention in this part of the Kingdom, I feel the need to place a stronger claim to the area. In doing so, I think we can acquire Duke Corun's assistance in an alliance."
"Here are my thoughts and I wish you to tell me what you think of them. I would like to offer an alliance to Duke Corun, in exchange for Stone Ridge becoming a part of our new duchy. We can offer them assistance in securing their borders, warmachines, training for their artillery troops, as well as significantly increased trade with Elcadan recovered."
"Stone Ridge would be the loss of a barony as well as a fortress, in Fort Fletcher, so we could offer to help them establish Lord Cavius' lands as a full-fledged barony in its own right, which the increased trade would help to sustain and increase. By also offering to build a fortress for them in these new lands, they would be recompensated for their losses."
"Corunglain would not be loosing anything they already have not lost and gaining much. In addition, it would keep the lands from falling to anyone else should it take longer for us to turn our attention there. Finally, I am aware that Sir Corley is quite enamored of the Lady Ardel and would like very much to win her love. It would help to link our families even more closely and to ensure a strong, trustworthy presence in those lands."
"When you add the fact that the Shield of Justice may be recovered and the Tower of Magic possibly restored by Kharyna and her associates, the future for Stone Ridge, no matter how desolate and defeated it may be now, is quite bright. And it would lead to the possibility to acquire and stablize even more of the Kingdom's surrounding areas."
Validar stops short for a moment, wondering what his love will say. It is much to comprehend, but this is Gabriella's field of expertise. "How do you think we should best approach Duke Corun? I want to make this a winning proposition for both parties and not seek simply to take advantage of the situation. While we did help make certain that Corunglain did not fall to the humanoids, we rescued himself and his family from certain death and we recovered Lord Cavius from the taint of evil, I do not want to force Duke Corun's hand and bend him to our desires. I want to make this a true alliance that will benefit him and strengthen the entire region."
Validar waits expectantly for the lady's response.
Duke Corun: “Words cannot express my gratitude for your actions, Baron Validar,” a tired looking Duke will say.
"The people of Curunglain are hearty and dependable and they have managed to survive the threats pushed against them. I am happy to have been a part of the conflicts and honored to be a part of the glorious battles that have take place in recent weeks."
"Rest now, but I would like to take some time, perhaps tomorrow, to further discuss alliance provisions and such. Perhaps after lunch?" Validar will offer hopefully.
"Why yes, it is forged of Star Metal," the King explains. "You are knowledgeable on magical metals. It is still as sharp as ever since the first king did wield it. It is my hope that it will serve my ancestors as well someday."
"You do speak truly. These are exciting times we live in. Let us together forge something greater."
"We are in agreement, milord. The road may be long and arduous, but it is worthwhile and it will be spectacular when the results are fully witnessed. My sword is ever at your disposal."
"I am pleased to consider you an ally and a friend."
"Ah, you are most kind, my King. We have not had the time as yet to formally announce our engagement and in truth I would like to see the situation in Elcadan under better control before we do so."
"Entirely understandable. I'll keep the situation private until you make your formal announcement."
Baron Validar/Araduin:
"Lord Sharadin is a fine man and a wise one as well. The more members there are, the more opportunity for everyone to increase their knowledge and their power. I am certain there is much with which you will be able to bolster your magickal prowess."
"That does seem to be the case," Araduin believes. "These guild spell books hold many spells that I never encountered before. I'll be able to add new spells along with recovering my old ones."
"Greetings, my elfin friend," Validar states. "It seems that your skill with the bow has not dimmed since we last adventured together."
"Not completely, but it is not what it once was. It will take some time to regain my skill."
"Very good. I am pleased to have you join the mission. You shall not be bored," Validar says with the grin of an inside joke. "It is unfortunate that more of the Seekers could not be reunited. However, Arocken has also joined me in my new travels. And we have many other powerful friends as well."
"What do envision our next mission being?"
Baron Validar/Sir Alon:
"Thank you for your wishes and your blessing. While it has not been formally announced, I would be honored to have you in attendance and with all that is likely to be happening I thought it better to make the situation known now. We will make a formal announcement sometime in the future."
"I will make plans to do so once you and your lady have made your announcement and set a date."
"You'll do fine in the eyes of others, Validar," Sir Alon notes. "It is the high standards that you have set for yourself that will require the most work to accomplish. You've pushed yourself further than most men in your position would. That is one of your strengths."
"That does make much sense. I look forward to the day when the Order is able to convene properly. We will be awaiting the squire candidates. I wonder if these youngsters will have any idea what they are getting themselves in for?"
"It has been a long time since the full assemblage of the Order has convened," Sir Alon agrees. "Far too long. Aye, new candidates rarely comprehend the enormity of what lies ahead of them."
"However, I am certain that there are others, more entrenched in their current power and their connections and sway with the previous King who will oppose the changes quite directly. In truth, I would not be surprised if they didn't already work to oppose the changes that we coming from Victor the 8th.
"While the change in Elcadan is definitely a factor, it is not the lynch pin of what I fear is to come. Rather it is a long string of events that will lead to this strife. I have no proof concerning what I am about to say, but rather just a suspicion, but you would be wise to be wary of those who follow the banner of the Kelvin family. If strife is to come, it will be from there."
At some point, Sir Alon will speak with Sir Acerion and congratulate him on his victory. He'll also relate that potential squires will be sent to Pyris in the days and weeks to come.
"I will be departing for the capital fairly soon," Sir Alon explains. "I understand that your family still has holdings there. Do you wish to send a message to them? To your mother, or it is your grandmother?"
Sir Acerion/Crysania:
"Of course," Acerion responds. "It will be good to have your strength and devotion with us, and your company would be most welcome as well. Our victory today is but another in a long series of tasks we must accomplish. I wish to eventually free my own ancestral homeland, so I can understand your feelings towards Elcadan."
"It is also... something of an embarrassment," Crysania admits. "We were in and around Elcadan for many years and never even suspected what was really going on. So much suffering has occurred due to my carelessness. I must help in this endeavor to atone for my earlier failings."
"The alternative to is to retire to a temple and fulfill the role of teacher and mentor. I am not ready to withdraw from the field of battle just yet. There is too much to be done and that weighs heavily upon me. Once I've made amends, then perhaps I will be ready to mentor the next generation of honorable warriors."
Sir Acerion/Dame Sharl and the King:
"Thank you for the kind words and the warning," Acerion replies. "Xanathom was a mighty foe and the battle nearly claimed my own life. It should send a warning to the Hextorites, but I agree with your assessment that there may be spies or assassins lurking in the near future."
"Our enemy is taught all the dirty tricks of warfare," Dame Sharl explains. "They do not seek honor as we do, but rather victory at any cost by any method. When such an attack comes, it will be from an unexpected quarter. You must constantly be vigilant."
"Very good then. Be safe until we next meet, Sir Acerion."
Sir Acerion/Duke Corun:
The day after the rescue mission, Duke Corun will make a point to speak to Sir Acerion.
“I wanted to thank you for your actions in the Hellpit, Sir Acerion. The battle against that evil woman was something to behold. You have my thanks and gratitude, along with all the people of Corunglain.”
“I understand that your family had holdings in Ardelphia in the past. I wish I could promise that those will be yours once more, but I am unsure I would be able to live up to my words. My father faced the painful choice of letting Ardelphia fall in exchange for keeping Corunglain and the Streel Plains safe. It was the lesser of two evils.”
“But my father did have a plan in place to reclaim Ardelphia permanently one day. Have you heard of the Guardian Shield? It is an artifact comprised of four shields, each dedicated to a God of good. When assembled, they would hedge out the orcs and their ilk, preventing them from coming within forty miles of Ardelphia. Once it is in place, then much of the threat to Ardelphia would be blunted. There would still be the work of rooting out what would remain in Ardelphia, but at least there would no longer be vast hordes of orcs.”
“I had one of the shields in my possession, but the other three remain missing. If we can find them and place in the main square in Ardelphia, then regaining our holdings would be very close. Please, visit Corunglain anytime you wish. We would be happy to have you as our guest.”
"The people of Corunglain are hearty and dependable and they have managed to survive the threats pushed against them. I am happy to have been a part of the conflicts and honored to be a part of the glorious battles that have take place in recent weeks."
"Aye, that they are. My forefathers carved this domain out of the wilderness by strength of arms. Corunglain is in a unique position, in that they alone stand in the defense of the main invasion path taken by the orc hordes. That it still remains standing is a credit to the Cynalonian people. We will redouble our efforts to ensure that the heartland of the Western Lands remain peaceful."
"Rest now, but I would like to take some time, perhaps tomorrow, to further discuss alliance provisions and such. Perhaps after lunch?" Validar will offer hopefully.
"That is agreeable," the Duke answers. "I have learned that your father has been elevated to Duke of Elcadan. That is sure to be a thankless task, but I cannot think of a better man to manage the unmanageable. Please let your father know that he has allies to the north."
Baron Validar/Zynara:
Validar is at first disappointed at Zynara's rebuttal to his offer, but it is not long before Gabriella has changed her mind. "Very good," he says with a smile, somewhat surprised although pleasantly so that Gabriella was successful where he was not. "We shall be leaving in two days, but you can take your time to arrive in Castle Pyris as you need. We shall have quarters arranged for you and your family."
"We don't have much in the way of belongings, so traveling will not be any great hardship," Zynara notes. "But I have several experiments that I am in the process of running in the Guild Laboratory that I need to complete first. Blod can accompany you immediately and I will follow when able."
Still much later that evening there is a knock at Baron Validar's door. Going to the door, Validar opens it and is mildly surprised to see no one standing there. Suddenly, he feels something wrap around his right leg. Looking down in alarm, he's surprised to see a familiar toothy grin looking back at him.
"Validar! You've come back!"
Latched on to the Baron's leg is none other than the halfling Bernice!
The dividing up of the magic items taken from Xanathom has begun. Sir Acerion takes the Blade of Roses, while Baron Validar selects the Warblade. Sir Alon takes Adjaha the Drinker and Serena will select Death Scream. Lord Sharadin will take Arbane and Blod, with Zynara's help, settles on the Ring of Fire Resistance. That completes one pass through the items for the group that Sir Acerion traveled with.
Sir Acerion takes the Boots of Stamina as his second pick. That just leaves one item remaining, the longsword Ilbratha. Baron Validar would pick next, so he can take it or pass on it. Or even take it to reward to someone else.
"It nearly resulted in the fall of Gateway. The potion numbs the mind and is especially effective against mages and those of higher intellectual capacity. A cowardly way to wage war, I do think."
"But a perfectly acceptable method of victory to them, beloved. They do not concern themselves with glory or honor, only in achieving their goals by any way they can. It may be cowardly, but it also allowed them to remove much of the opposition with only minimal sacrifice. As distasteful as it is, there is a logic to their actions. To them victory is more important than the way it was earned."
"I have heard legends of such people; those who are part-mortal, part-higher power. They tend to be among the best at anything they do. They are natural leaders and many have been rulers. Such beings have a built-in advantage over the rest of us mere mortals."
"That thought had not occurred to me before. While I've always put the good of the Kingdom over my own personal welfare, the notion of working for something I can call my own does have its appeal. It also does remind me that I should return to my home at some point to inform my family about what goes on. There are also some friends that I would like to accompany me to Pyris once we are wedded to serve on my personal staff."
"I am always here to serve as a sounding board for anything you wish to discuss. I have the feeling that this is going to be good."
Validar waits expectantly for the lady's response.
Lady Allonica considers Validar’s plan, her face becoming more and more serious as he continues to speak.
“Wow, where do I begin? Your plan is ambitious, but I have some serious concerns to it. The key to any successful negotiation is to not only understand what you’re trying to gain, but what the other side wants as well. Then you can work towards an equitable solution.”
“If you’re forming your opinions of the true situation based on what Lady Vera says, then your information is at best, simplistic in nature. I mean no disrespect to Lady Vera, but she is naive when it comes to comprehending the kind of issues that we are discussing. She is like a child missing their favorite toy. They want it and cannot understand why they can’t have it.”
“Yes, Stone Ridge is a valuable territory and to say that no one wishes to recover it is the furthest thing from the truth. The Corun’s would dearly love to have the wealth generated from those mines back. The ore would be a definite boon to all. Yes, it is an issue of resources. The Kingdom lost many good men during the Great War and we’re still not back to the population that we used to have.”
“The choice the Corun family faced was this. They only had enough manpower to safely protect Corunglain or protect Ardelphia. Which would you choose? They chose, perhaps selfishly, to save Corunglain. The fact that it also blocks the historic main invasion path for the orc hordes makes it the obvious choice. On one hand you have the safety of the Streel Plain or continue to support an out-of-the-way Barony? In the end, there was no real choice. If Corunglain fell, then Ardelphia would fall anyway as it would then be isolated. It was the only choice that could be made.”
“You’re asking them to surrender at least 25% of their domain in exchange for troops and weapons. The Pyrisian army isn’t that large either and are you not going to need them to help stabilize Elcadan? Do you really have that many men to spare? Do you even have the resources to build these fortress’ of which you speak? Even your father will have much to deal with in Elcadan. Realistically any help will take time.”
“The Coruns, like many Cynalonian nobles, are a proud family. For them to turn over those lands is akin to admitting defeat. That the problem was too hard for them to solve. If you were in their place, would you do such a thing? The man I know would not. I am sure that the Duke would welcome assistance, but I cannot imagine him forfeiting any land to get it. What you offer is a good step towards a long term alliance, but what you want in return is too steep a price in my opinion.”
“It is true that the Duke is now in your debt and you could force the issue. That could lead to further complications down the line. Plus, you would need to get your father on board with this plan since what you propose affects him as well.”
“I am glad that you talked to me about this first. I’m not sure if my advice was helpful or not, but I am pleased you sought it out.”
Latched on to the Baron's leg is none other than the halfling Bernice!
With a surprised, but amused look on her face, Lady Gabriella will say, “Why Baron Validar, I was unaware that there was a rival for your affections?”
"Ah, interesting," Validar states. "I apologize for the assumption and was not aware of a newly recovered temple in the area. However, it is what I would suspect very good news for your order. Certainly anything that pre-dates King Victor I would be a significant historical find at any rate."
“I was an understandable mistake,” Serena states. “It is my suspicion that perhaps this temple was built during the time of the Fellowship of Mages. As such it would predate your kingdom by several centuries. It seems like the most logical explanation.”
"She was the one who destroyed the grip of the Cold Maiden on Neverwinter and she seems to be favored by your patron as well. I do not welcome Alphatians meddling in our affairs either, so I hope you are able to convince them that the situation is what it is."
“I see,” Serena answers. “She does seem to be quite capable. I fear there will be Alphatian meddling at some point. Such a thing cannot be avoided. My people revere Mystra above all other gods and the thought that the Ladies greatest temple be outside their borders is something many will not accept. I am not a politician. I simply serve Mystra. If she deems Kharyna the one to accomplish this great deed, then I accept that.”
“While my people cannot see it, they have fallen from Mystra’s favor and with good reason. They have taken her gifts in dark directions and have been self-absorbed with their own importance. Use of the Zonga fruit is wide-spread in Alphatia. The Empire has been in decline ever since the civil war that led to the destruction of the previous Tower of Magic. My feeling is that Mystra has turned her eyes to this land as being the one that succeeds Alphatia in importance and dominance one day. The establishment of the Tower of Magic here just lends credence to that notion.”
Serena will relax and be ready to depart when the time comes.
King Victor VIII: "Why yes, it is forged of Star Metal," the King explains. "You are knowledgeable on magical metals. It is still as sharp as ever since the first king did wield it. It is my hope that it will serve my ancestors as well someday."
"My father's scribe was patient enough to teach me many things and as I mentioned I have much interest in the past history of our Kings and nobles. And as for being a martial warrior myself, as well as a noble, I find it very valuable knowledge as well as particularly fascinating."
"You do speak truly. These are exciting times we live in. Let us together forge something greater."
"Indeed! I wonder what we will look back upon when we are finished. Truly it will be glorious."
"I am pleased to consider you an ally and a friend."
"As am I, my King."
"Entirely understandable. I'll keep the situation private until you make your formal announcement."
"Most kind. You will of course be amongst the first to be invited to the festivities."
Dar Thaltus: "Not completely, but it is not what it once was. It will take some time to regain my skill."
"I am confident it shall not be long, my elfin friend. And you may have an opportunity to work on your skill sooner than later. Adventure never seem to be far from us of late."
"What do envision our next mission being?"
"There are many tasks which vie for my attention. We have the matter of reclaiming and controlling all of Elcadan, which will not be a small matter. We will be accompanying Duke Relon in his march to Elcadan City and I am certain it shall not be as simple as it sounds."
"Beyond that there is the matter of assisting the dwarves in the reclaiming of their holdings in the region, defeating the enemy in Ardelphia and Stone Ridge and more. But for now, our focus is on Elcadan."
Sir Alon: "I will make plans to do so once you and your lady have made your announcement and set a date."
"Very good. It would not be the same without you."
"You'll do fine in the eyes of others, Validar," Sir Alon notes. "It is the high standards that you have set for yourself that will require the most work to accomplish. You've pushed yourself further than most men in your position would. That is one of your strengths."
Validar considers his old mentor's words. "I imagine you are correct, although I had never thought of it in those terms. I most certainly do place higher standards upon myself than anyone else could ever hope to do."
"But I have high hopes for my lands and for the Kingdom. To take what has been given me and not expand and build upon it would be a waste of the responsibility entrusted upon me. Too many nobles recently have done just that and it is part of the reason the Kingdom is in the state that it is currently."
"It has been a long time since the full assemblage of the Order has convened," Sir Alon agrees. "Far too long. Aye, new candidates rarely comprehend the enormity of what lies ahead of them."
Validar can only smile, as he thinks about himself when he first started to learn the art of war from a knight. Much has happened in those days. "If they are worthy, they will help us forge a new realm that will know prosperity for aeons."
"While I do not welcome the strife that you mention, I would be pleased if we managed to control Elcadan before it was unleashed. Still, I am certain that your suspicions have merit, else they would not exist."
"The Kelvins are one of the lines that existed before Cynalon was formed. They do not have a direct lineage to the King's bloodline and I imagine they always wanted in, even more. They have much influence with many of the other old families as well. I will be certain to be wary of them and their machinations."

Zynara: "We don't have much in the way of belongings, so traveling will not be any great hardship," Zynara notes. "But I have several experiments that I am in the process of running in the Guild Laboratory that I need to complete first. Blod can accompany you immediately and I will follow when able."
"That does indeed sound like a fine plan. The castle staff will do their utmost to provide for you what you need."
"Very well, Blod and Zynara. I look forward to your assistance."
Magic Items:
Validar is allowed to take the Warblade and he does so. He will make this his main weapon although the unnamed mithril blade he has been using will remain in his possession. Validar will then also claim Ilbratha, as it can be added to his growing collection of weapons, or disbursed to someone who may have need of it in the future. It seems to be the weapon for a fighter-mage, but others could certainly make use of its magick.
Serena, the Inquisitor: “I was an understandable mistake,” Serena states. “It is my suspicion that perhaps this temple was built during the time of the Fellowship of Mages. As such it would predate your kingdom by several centuries. It seems like the most logical explanation.”
"That would make it quite the find. I imagine there is much knowledge and many mysteries to be learned from such a place. How far to the south of Elcadan is it?"
Serena seems to be non-commital herself when it comes to the situation with Kharyna and the Tower of Magic, but Alphatian influence can only be a bad thing. Of course, it would only be natural that as Cynalon raised itself from the ashes and became even stronger than in the past that we would draw the attention and potential ire of other kingdoms. Alphatia is a worry that may have to be dealt with sooner than later and that does not bode well for the Kingdom.
Validar listens to the information, soaking up everything he can from what is said. He knows precious little about Alphatia and their politics, but they are powerful and wide-ranging in their holdings.
"I hope that you are correct, Lady Inquisitor. If Mystra has turned her favor this way, then perhaps is quite aware of the changes that are in the works and the glory that is to come for Cynalon. However, I can assure you that while it seems very likely that the gods have favored our endeavors of late, Cynalon is destined for greatness regardless of her allies or her enemies. We have opposed the evil that has festered and grown. We are a force of good and righteousness and might and I expect that one day Cynalon may influence the entire planet."
"Ah, but I begin to boast. Forgive me. I have extreme pride in our people and our Kingdom. While I have my questions about some of the gods intentions and desires, it is certainly a boon to be recognized and favored by Mystra, Heironeous and others. I for one also welcome your assistance in helping us to achieve the greatness to which we all aspire."
Duke Corun: "Aye, that they are.
"I shall endeavor to see that you shall not need do so alone." Validar does not explain his true meaning of this statement now, but perhaps in time. "We need everyone to be strong if the Kingdom is to prosper."
"Indeed, Relon is now Duke of Elcadan. While it is a title slightly reduced from that of the previous duke, with some of the lands going to Athenos, and perhaps a title in name only for the brief moment, we will all strive to make Elcadan one of the finest jewels in Cynalon's crown."
"It is important to our immediate task to regain complete control of Elcadan to have as many formal alliances as possible. While I am aware that you do not have the troops to assist us militarily, that is not the avenue we currently need. For now it is political and economic. In truth, I dare say we can be of a considerable boon to your lands."
Bernice: Still much later that evening there is a knock at Baron Validar's door. Going to the door, Validar opens it and is mildly surprised to see no one standing there.
"That is odd" , he says, scanning down one side of the hall and then the other. "I could have sworn..."
Suddenly, he feels something wrap around his right leg. Looking down in alarm, he's surprised to see a familiar toothy grin looking back at him.
"Validar! You've come back!" Latched on to the Baron's leg is none other than the halfling Bernice!
Validar is somewhat surprised to see the little halfling here. "Bernice," finally manages to say. "What an unexpected surprise."
With a surprised, but amused look on her face, Lady Gabriella will say, “Why Baron Validar, I was unaware that there was a rival for your affections?”
"Ah, Gabriella, perhaps you remember my teammate from the Seekers, Bernice. Bernice, this is my lady, Gabriella Allonica. What brings you to Karn's Keep?"
Lady Gabriella Allonica: "It nearly resulted in the fall of Gateway.
"It may be acceptable to them, but that does not change the fact it is a coward's method. And that is why they are not successful. While it is important to understand their methods, I do not respect them, nor do I ever wish to emulate them. A victory is hollow if won through deceit or vile trickery and its spoils soon lost. While it is important to use these methods in strategy, to use them in one's tactics seems to only result in ultimate failure."
"I have heard legends of such people; those who are part-mortal, part-higher power. They tend to be among the best at anything they do. They are natural leaders and many have been rulers. Such beings have a built-in advantage over the rest of us mere mortals."
"We mere mortals have our own advantages, I dare say. For how could even one who has the blood of an other planar being rival you in your charm, beauty and grace? Truly there is not one in the heavens who claim claim such."
"While it is an honor to work for the new King, for certain, there is no comparison to creating something for oneself."
"I should hope the prospect is appealing, to say the least," Validar responds with a playful grin. "Few people take the opportunity to forge themselves a life they desire. We have the means to do so and the process is already begun."
"As for a return to your home, that is a wise decision and I am sure something that is long overdue. I hope to be able to accompany you on that journey. I would very much like to meet your family. As for a staff, there is no reason not to assemble them as soon as you are able. There is no need to wait until our wedding day. I am certain the extra assistance will be quite useful."
Baron Validar wrote:"That would make it quite the find. I imagine there is much knowledge and many mysteries to be learned from such a place. How far to the south of Elcadan is it?"
"The Lady Sallavarian did state that it was to the south of Elcadan, in the swamp. I believe she said it was west of a village called Orlane. Although I am a stranger to your lands, so such directions do not tell me much."
Baron Validar wrote:"I hope that you are correct, Lady Inquisitor. If Mystra has turned her favor this way, then perhaps she is quite aware of the changes that are in the works and the glory that is to come for Cynalon.
"Perhaps one day," Serena answers diplomatically. "While you have indeed grown in stature, you have a long way to go to even matching the Empire in its current state. But that is a matter that will be revealed long after we are both gone from this world. If the gods do indeed smile upon these lands, then they have for a long time now. While mortals may plan months, even years in advance, the gods do so in centuries and millenniums. Their forethought is far indeed."
Baron Validar wrote:"Ah, but I begin to boast. Forgive me. I have extreme pride in our people and our Kingdom. While I have my questions about some of the gods intentions and desires, it is certainly a boon to be recognized and favored by Mystra, Heironeous and others. I for one also welcome your assistance in helping us to achieve the greatness to which we all aspire."
"Taking pride in one's land is commendable, Baron. But it can also be a danger when one's pride blinds them to the real faults that do exist. Many other nations have risen on this world and most have fallen again. Perhaps Cynalon can learn the lesson of longevity that the other nations seem to not have."
Validar listens until Gabriella is finished before commeting.
"Unfortunately, I think you misunderstood me on a variety of levels. But that is what these discussions are for. First of all, I do not think that Vera is the beginning and then end of Stone Ridge. She is the most likely claimant to the title however. I do not think that can be disputed. And should Lord Corley in fact win her affections, then the lands shall have a reasonable ruler and she canot be overlooked for her lack of skill. Do you have some information that would refute this?"
"Also, I did not say that noone wishes to recover it, but that those that do desire it do not have the resources to do so. A large difference. Corunglain will be a long time from being able to defend such a territory. As such, it will remain lawless and empty. Elcadan on the other hand, has a large proportion of people who need to be moved out of the slums of the city and they could begin the process of inhabiting the lands much faster than anyother realm. How could Corunglain begin to populate the land if they have been under so much strife of war? And how can they begin to pay for the costs of reconstruction? There is more to having Stone Ridge than simply freeing Ardelphia."
"I do not disagree with the choices that were made by the Corun family. Surely they needed to protect the main city and the main path through the mountains. What is done is done and the situation is what it is."
"I think you may no be thinking long enough term. This isn't something that can be resolved immediately, but any negotiation should be done now, while the value of Stone Ridge is at its lowest. Indeed Pyrisian resources will be needed to stabilize Elcadan. But then, there will be more resources to rely upon and surely Elcadan can offer its support to gain such a reward as Stone Ridge. It is a matter of thinking in succession."
"I would not be offering troops, but rather training. We cannot afford to lose troops, as you mention. The equipment is not a problem, for we have a sizeable cash reserve from my efforts with the Seekers that would have been used for Pyrisian defenses against Elcadan. That is not needed now. As for the construction of a fortress, in the right place, it would not take long to construct. That is certainly something that can be done. Also there is likely to be some help to come from other sources in the near future. We are making change for everyone and while resources are not collected now, it is simply a matter of pulling them together when the time comes, instead of having them available this moment."
"The Coruns may be proud, but the question is, are they realistic? It does not do to ask if I would do the same in their place, for I would not likely be in their place. We would have reclaimed Ardelphia already or I would be dead on the field of battle. The question, my dear, is what will they do. We are not offering them troops, we are offering them security. We are not offering them a fortress, we are offering to share to load of defending against the enemy hordes. We are not taking a bustling land, we are interested in something they do not have and likely have no reasonable chance to recover in the nearest future without assistance. Stone Ridge will be a blight until someone decides to take it and has the ability to get it all done."
"I do not believe it will be difficult to convince Duke Relon that the olan is a wise one. The only negative would be more lands to control, but it could also give many political opportunities. And I do not wish to force my desires upon Duke Corun. If the duchy had fallen, then perhaps it would be easier to do so. We managed to save it, and in a sense, that puts me in a less desireable position in regards these matters. Still I cannot believe that unless the barony is awarded to someone, that noone will have the desire to recover it without personal recompense, save perhaps Sirs Acerion and Corley, and Corunglain will not be strong enough to do so on its own in my lifetime. They have been unable to even hold their forts until now, even when recovered time and time again."
"Your questions are all good ones, for they force me to have answers to them. Believe me, I have thought much about the campaign that is required to claim Stone Ridge as well as to hold it indefinitely. Much as I have thought about the war that now will never be against Elcadan. I need you to question the plans, for that is how one makes a better plan. And I need you to help be learn what is the motivations of the Duke and what does he want, as well as what it would take from him to earn Stone Ridge."
“I am glad that you talked to me about this first. I’m not sure if my advice was helpful or not, but I am pleased you sought it out.”
"I had thought about going to the Duke and making my proposal, but I have learned some about the art of diplomacy and despite what some people may say, I can be tactful."
Just then, there is a knock at the door and Bernice is seen...
Serena: "The Lady Sallavarian did state that it was to the south of Elcadan, in the swamp. I believe she said it was west of a village called Orlane. Although I am a stranger to your lands, so such directions do not tell me much."
Ah, that places it much further south, and closer to Athenos. I thought perhaps it was within Elcadan's territory, but it is not based on where you say."
Validar is still not a big proponent of the gods and their schemes. In many cases, they just cause more trouble than it is worth. He also has a difficult time seeing eye to eye with clerics in the first place. They place their faith in these gods more than Validar ever can. "Perhaps and perhaps not," he answers, referring more to her comment that it will happen after they are gone than before, rather than to the obvious statement. "There are more plans at work than just what the gods desire."
"Taking pride in one's land is commendable, Baron. But it can also be a danger when one's pride blinds them to the real faults that do exist. Many other nations have risen on this world and most have fallen again. Perhaps Cynalon can learn the lesson of longevity that the other nations seem to not have."
"Indeed, you are correct. And yet I am aware of many of the faults of our Kingdom. Hopefully they can be corrected with proper leadership and direction. It is often the faults that lie closest to oneself that are the hardest to see. It is easy to find fault in your friends. Even easier still to find fault in yor enemies. It is truyl difficult to find fault in one's own doings."
Duke Corun: While the talks with Gabriella are not complete, there is no reason to begin delay of the negotiations with Duke Corun...
The day after, Validar will make some time to visit the Duke of Corunglain once more, after lunch, as they had proposed. Lady Gabriella accompanies him to the talks and Validar introduces the lady to the Duke and any others present. Pleasantries are exchanged and the Duke and his family are doing much better now with clerical attention and some rest.
"Firstly, I would like to formalize a basic treaty of alliance between the Duchy of Corunglain and the Duchy of Elcadan. Lady Allonica and I have prepared a simple Writ of Alliance, further details can be worked out once Duke Relon and you have more time to deal with the matters currently at hand, for both duchies are undergoing different forms of strife."
"We have assisted your lands and helped to turn the tide against the humanoid horde. Your alliance will lend the new Duke's position even greater credibility in the stabilization of Elcadan and its territories. In addition to the alliance we have had with Graystone, our negotiating position with the lords of Elcadan is strong."
Lady Allonica will present the Alliance for signing to the Duke. "We look forward to future negotiations and opportunities to assist one another," she says, as Duke Corun reads the document over.
Once that is completed, Validar will thank the Duke and offer his hand to confirm the deal. "There is one more matter, which I wish to discuss with your lordship, Duke Corun. I am curious, what would you offer for the reclamation and recovery of Stone Ridge? I think you can agree, that given what my associates and I have accomplished, that such a task is not out of the question as an attainable feat. But it would be an undertaking of considerable danger, time and expense. What would your duchy promise to reclaim these fallen lands?"
"It is good to hear Serena will join with us as well," Acerion replies, leaving the previous comments about Crysania alone. The paladin knows that many here could easily have to face off against each other as the kingdom begins to solidify. For now though, having many allies is definitely worthwhile.
"That time can not arrive soon enough," Acerion says simply.
"I have no doubt we will not lack for things demanding our attention," Acerion says. "It will be good though to have the chance to take care of many such plans and actions when in Pyris. I am eager to interview the squire candidates."
"Having a number of enemies is not unexpected with lives ones such as ourselves lead," Acerion continues. "I will remain ever vigilant in making sure none of us suddenly sprout daggers or arrows from our backs."
"Fair enough and thank you my friend," Acerion says to Validar before he leaves his friend to his other attentions.
Sir Alon:
At some point, Sir Alon will speak with Sir Acerion and congratulate him on his victory. He'll also relate that potential squires will be sent to Pyris in the days and weeks to come.
"I will be departing for the capital fairly soon," Sir Alon explains. "I understand that your family still has holdings there. Do you wish to send a message to them? To your mother, or it is your grandmother?"
Acerion will clasp hands with Sir Alon upon seeing him, "Thank you for your congratulations and thank you as well for having the squire candidates sent to Pyris. I am eager to see and interview them."
"Yes, my remaining family, both my mother and grandmother, are there," Acerion explains. "Indeed I would like to send them a message. I shall have them prepared before your departure."
Acerion will have two messages penned, the one to his grandmother more basic in its writing, only highlighting the most important recent events and informing her of the continued plans for Ardelphia. The one to his mother will contain more detail, especially concerning his meeting with his father. Acerion is uncertain how often the two of them get to see each other, if ever, but he is certain his mother will appreciate the news. He will also drop hints of the coming marriage, even though nothing is firmly in place. Acerion knows his mother will be angry at him for not telling her everything, but not in a spiteful way. He figures it will do his mother good to hear some uplifting news, even if it remains purposefully vague for the moment.
Acerion will meet up again with Sir Alon before he departs and hand him the two sealed messages. "Thank you for carrying these to them," he will say before leaving.
Dame Sharl and the King:
"Our enemy is taught all the dirty tricks of warfare," Dame Sharl explains. "They do not seek honor as we do, but rather victory at any cost by any method. When such an attack comes, it will be from an unexpected quarter. You must constantly be vigilant."
"Such an enemy will be defeated despite their desire to use any underhanded trick they can devise," Acerion reassures Dame Sharl. "Still, I shall remain vigilant in this, as in all things."
"Very good then. Be safe until we next meet, Sir Acerion."
"I shall, my King, and may good health and eternal safety be with both of you," Acerion says before bowing and departing their company.
Duke Corun:
“I wanted to thank you for your actions in the Hellpit, Sir Acerion. The battle against that evil woman was something to behold. You have my thanks and gratitude, along with all the people of Corunglain.”
"Thank you for the kind words, Duke Corun," Acerion replies gratefully.
"Ardelphia shall be freed from its oppressive yoke, of that you can have faith in," Acerion replies. "It is one of my driving goals to do just that. It is not my place to question the actions of a man faced with a difficult decision, but if you are able to join in the cause to reclaim these lands, then I would gratefully welcome such assistance. Of course, it would not be something that you and I would be doing alone," the last is said with a smile.
"Indeed I have heard of it," Acerion says. "My companions and I have recovered the Shield of Justice. It is with great honor that Heironeous has allowed me to be its guardian until its ultimate purpose can be realized."
While that information sinks in, Acerion continues, "You say you had one of the shields? I take this to mean that you no longer do?"
"I will take you up on your kind offer to visit Corunglain once time permits me to do so," Acerion replies.
