Elfquest #11

The elves continue to search for the medallions that are the keys to liberating the Mother Tree.

In the Southern portion of the Elfholds, Laucian has interrupted a skirmish amongst centaurs. Upon being spotted, the centaurs stopped fighting and focused their attention on the elves. Many accused the elves of being part of the ‘Black Horde’ and wondered what kind of being they were, as if they had never seen an elf before.

The centaurs decide to escort the elves back to their village so that the Clanmaster can speak with them. With the centaurs leading the way, the elves are escorted towards their village. The centaurs keep a brisk pace, trotting as they move through the forest. The elves are forced to run and jog just to keep pace. The centaurs keep weapons as the ready, but are not overtly aggressive with them.

As you move along, Lau continues to speak with the centaur with the blond hair and white and brown horsehair. This centaur goes by the name of Bech. All that Bech will explain further is that a decision made by the Clanmaster has divided the tribe and tensions are running high.

About an hour after meeting the centaurs, you come to their village. Many more centaurs are here, including females and young. At least thirty more adult males and at least twice that many in women and children are seen.

The village itself isn’t anything spectacular. The buildings are mostly open shelters with crude roofs of broken limbs and branches. There is no furniture of note.

The Clanmaster is summoned and he gallops into sight in short order. He is an older centaur as expected, his coat and hair having turned a whitish gray. The Clanmaster eyes the group warily as the other centaurs explain the situation. He then turns to speak to Laucian.

He will ask Laucian a series of questions. Who are you? Why are here? Etc.

The Clanmaster will then relate the situation to Laucian, who will in turn translate for his companions.

The Centaurs had known of the master of the Tree Palace for a long time. A few weeks ago, the Ancient Master came amongst the centaurs and they held a feast in his honor. The guest betrayed the centaurs and spirited away the Clanmaster’s youngest son. The Ancient Master then demanded fealty from the centaurs.

The Clanmaster is now torn between swearing loyalty to the Ancient Master and attacking the Tree Palace to rescue his son. This is the issue violently dividing the tribe. There are those who want to attack, and then there are those who fear the Ancient Master’s retaliation should they attack. The Black Hordes are well known and feared by the Centaurs.

Further to the north, Lia and Valena are exploring the manticore cave. Inside it they’ve found the remains of many past victims. The vast majority were beings wearing black leather armor. Off in a side tunnel, the skeleton of an elf was found, but her robes were intact.
"Perhaps it is not an elf skeleton at all." Lia says evenly as she reads the letter allowed.

Valena moves the robes aside to better the see the skeleton underneath. By doing this, it is clear that the skeleton is indeed an elf, but an elf that was tormented and tortured. The fingers of the elf were broken as were the leg bones. It is clear that this unfortunate did not climb to this cave, nor did she write the note you found.
Lia wrote:"Let us Check the cavern walls, Perhaps they invoked some magic to hide it?" she says curiously.

The pair quickly examines the walls of the cavern. Much of it is smooth and flat, but there are rough areas and occasionally natural shelves. Near the back of the cave, up on a small ledge you spot a silver chest! It seems very out of place given everything else here in the cavern.

Just at that moment, Lia and Valena feel a tug on their lines! They are being urged to return to the barge.

Outside the cavern on the barge, a manticore is spotted flying back to the cave!

Valena:
Lia wrote:"Nor I, though they may contain items of use." She says evenly though her eyes remain on the task at hand. "Or perhaps it is made to resemble a rock."
“Perhaps,” Valena says. “We’ll know better once we find one of these medallions.”
Lia wrote:"Perhaps it is not an elf skeleton at all." She says evenly as she reads the letter aloud.
“Let us find out.”
“This is an elf all right. But one that has suffered horribly! Her fingers and legs were broken. She could not have climbed here nor did she write the words on that scroll. If she’s the last of the Keepers, then she kept the Mother Tree’s location concealed even under tremendous duress. She’s a hero to the elfin people.”
Lia wrote:‘The Dark Maiden does grant such powers, though I currently do not have that particular blessing.” she said thoughtfully. “We Will have to take part of the Skeleton with us.” drawing out her dagger she slowly removes the skull of the Skeleton, then places it within a nearby backpack, along with the scroll, and slings it over her shoulder.
“I’m not surprised. It’s not a spell one would consider praying for given our situation.”

Much to Valena’s surprise, Lia seems like she’s going to cut the skeleton’s head off!

“No!! What are you doing? This poor woman suffered horribly under Moorkroft’s tortures and you would do this to her? She must be treated with the respect given any hero to the elfin people. We’ll take her body with us when we leave. I am unsure which clan she came from, but we’ll find out the proper way to put her mortal remains to rest.”
Lia wrote:"Let us Check the cavern walls, Perhaps they invoked some magic to hide it" she says curiously.
“Agreed. Our people are well known for their skill in concealing things. Just like we are skilled in finding them.”
The pair quickly examines the walls of the cavern. Much of it is smooth and flat, but there are rough areas and occasionally natural shelves. Near the back of the cave, up on a small ledge you spot a silver chest! It seems very out of place given everything else here in the cavern.
“Perhaps this is what we seek? You’re taller Lia, can you reach it?”

Just at that moment, Lia and Valena feel a tug on their lines! They are being urged to return to the barge.

“Something is happening outside! Grab the chest and let us return to the barge. We’ll have to come back for the skeleton at a later time!”

Valena will start to head back, but draws her bow and keeps an eye on Lia to see if she is able to reach the silver chest. Once that task is accomplished, she’ll rush back to the barge. She’ll try to keep her line untangled with all the clutter here in the cave.

Laucian
The Clanmaster is summoned and he gallops into sight in short order. He is an older centaur as expected, his coat and hair having turned a whitish gray. The Clanmaster eyes the group warily as the other centaurs explain the situation. He then turns to speak to Laucian.

He will ask Laucian a series of questions. Who are you? Why are here? Etc.

Bowing in respect though his gaze didn’t leave the Clanmaster’s eyes. " I am Laucina Nailo of Clan Grundalf Follower Of Ehlonna , And these are my companions,” Stepping before each of his companions gesturing to them, Kylie Lanthorn, of Elcadan, Lilliathelionn Allandros of Clan Grunalf and Nariya of Clan Callarii."

Laucian considered the next question carefully, How much should he tell them… Or should he leave some out…. Best to be honest he would think.

"When we first set out over 3 weeks ago Our Quest was one of Vital importance, One that affects the very core of Elfin heritage and culture. Several generations ago Our people, the elves sought it seem fit to leave the Slyvian realms and migrate to the south east over a rainbow bridge. Of the 7 major clans one remained, Clan Feador, Whom Kylie is kin to.

Clan Feador remained to protect the Mother tree, while the others took saplings of the mother tree and planted them within the forest in which they settle, The Dorwynn Elfholds.

For sometime communication was lost from Clan Feador. 9 parties were sent forth to reestablish contact with our lost clan. The first nine, as far as we can tell, never reached the Slyvain realm. We are the first Elves to set foot upon this land in sometime.

Upon reaching the Slyvian realm we saw the Horror of what had transpired. The Banner of a Black Horde flown high above our ancestral home. Orcs, evil Human and wyrvens watch over the land like vultures, A sight that saddens my heart to see.

A unicorn spoke to me, as well as a Treant to Nariya. Both the Forest Lord and Treant spoke of this Black horde and how they poison the land and those noble creatures that live within its beauty.

We only wish to cleanse the forests of the Black Horde’s taint and save the Mother tree for she is dying and this beautiful land with her…"
The Centaurs had known of the master of the Tree Palace for a long time. A few weeks ago, the Ancient Master came amongst the centaurs and they held a feast in his honor. The guest betrayed the centaurs and spirited away the Clanmaster’s youngest son. The Ancient Master then demanded fealty from the centaurs.

There are those who want to attack, and then there are those who fear the Ancient Master’s retaliation should they attack. The Black Hordes are well known and feared by the Centaurs.
Laucian will excuse himself for a moment explaining that he is the only one who speaks centaur and tell the others of what transpired.

Kylie:

They accompany the centaurs to their village. There they meet the ClanMaster, who proves to be an older male, his fur having turned grey.

He and Laucian converse, and Laucian introduces his companions. Kylie curtseys when her turn comes. "A pleasure to meet you, ClanMaster."

There is more discussion, then Laucian describes the situation in which the centaurs find themselves. It is a devious plot, and Kylie's heart goes out to the ClanMaster, whose son has been kidnapped.

"I feel sorry for the ClanMaster's situation," Kylie says to Laucian. "If they can just delay for a little while, we should soon have a sufficient force to raid the Forest Palace and retrieve his son."

Lia

Lia looked on as Valena inspected the unknown Skeleton. It was soon discovered it was indeed an elf, whom suffered greatly before it passed. Lia couldn’t help but wonder what kind of monster would torture another being in such away. But then again this Moorkroft cut down trees and gathered the essence of those living within them….
Whomever this skeleton was, the tales they could tell would be greatly useful to their Quest. She thought as she took out her dagger and began reaching for the skull.
Sheathing her blade Lia, Looked up to Valena, "I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…. I just thought that perhaps it would be best to do it that way….I do not know the customs you do of the Elfin people."
“Perhaps this is what we seek? You’re taller Lia, can you reach it?”
Just at that moment, Lia and Valena feel a tug on their lines! They are being urged to return to the barge.

"Or it is left so easily to find…"Not liking it Lia looked at the chest, She couldn’t help but feel this was to easy, between the scroll and the chest and learning that the one left didn’t write it. It vexed her greatly…

Feeling a tug upon her line Lia looked to Valena, Looks like we will be expecting company…

“Something is happening outside! Grab the chest and let us return to the barge. We’ll have to come back for the skeleton at a later time!”

“No, I will not.” she drew her sword with a metallic hiss, and cut the rope away from her, knowing full well if she were to fight it would hamper her. “The Chest is far to easily found… If whom ever placed the body placed that chest or raided what ever was in it. It is the chest we shall come back for. The skeleton is what should be brought!” placing her sword back within it sheath.

Reaching down she picked up a tower shield and dragged it face down upon the ground. As carefully and quickly as she could, she places the body upon it, And begins dragging the body cart toward the cave mouth. Being careful not to flip the shield or dislodge the body from the shield.
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Lilia:

Much to Lilia’s annoyance, the centaurs move at such a brisk pace that she’s forced to run and jog to keep up! The Elfin Maiden isn’t used to such physical exertions. For a moment she considers using magic to make the journey easier, but fears that the centaurs might react negatively to such a display. It’s probably better to keep her magical talents concealed for the time being.

Her lungs aching, we finally reach the centaur camp. Lilia can’t help but take deep breathes and rest her hands on her knees. Looking around, the centaur village is a crude on. Given their form there is no regular human furniture. No chairs or tables or even beds.

An older centaur comes along and he converses with Laucian. After a time, Laucian steps away to relate the conversation.

“Yes, yes, very tragic,” Lilia interrupts. “What about the medallion? Did you ask him about the Centaur Medallion?”

“Does not the Dark Maiden teach you to respect your fallen? Would you do the same to another of your flock?”

After a pause, Valena adds, “The customs of what to do with the mortal remains varies from clan to clan. We in Clan Feador believe that the body is just a vessel to hold the soul, much like a jug can hold water. When the soul is gone, the body is just a dead husk. Our dead are purified in fire. It destroys the body and makes sure that some necromancer doesn’t animate it in the future. Given that Clan Feador was charged to protect the Mother Tree she is probably my kin. We will honor her efforts with purification by fire.”
“No, I will not.” she drew her sword with a metallic hiss, and cut the rope away from her, knowing full well if she were to fight it would hamper her. “The Chest is far to easily found… If whom ever placed the body placed that chest or raided what ever was in it. Valena is taken aback by Lia’s choice, but does not argue. Speed is of the essence and this is not the time for a debate. Seeing what Lia is trying to do, Valena will move ahead with her bow drawn. Her best guess is that the manticores are returning!

Nariya:

The centaurs decide to escort the elves back to their village so that the Clanmaster can speak with them. With the centaurs leading the way, the elves are escorted towards their village. The centaurs keep a brisk pace, trotting as they move through the forest. The elves are forced to run and jog just to keep pace. The centaurs keep weapons as the ready, but are not overtly aggressive with them.

Nariya enjoys the brisk pace. It's been too long since she's been able to run like this and her enjoyment is evident on her face. The only thing that would be better is if she was leading the way.

The centaur village isn't much to look at, but it's what Nariya expected to see. She didn't figure any real furniture would be used except something simple to sleep upon. The village is quite populated, which is good to see.

We finally meet the Clanmaster and Laucian explains everything in detail, although Nariya can't follow any of it. He does thankfully tell us everything soon enough.

"I feel sorry for the ClanMaster's situation," Kylie says to Laucian. "If they can just delay for a little while, we should soon have a sufficient force to raid the Forest Palace and retrieve his son."

“Yes, yes, very tragic,” Lilia interrupts. “What about the medallion? Did you ask him about the Centaur Medallion?”

Nariya is shocked for a moment at Lilia's words, but it quickly makes sense. We need to do more than just rescue one son, we need to save the entire realm. The Medallion is a key to that. "It is bad indeed," Nariya adds, "but Lilia's right, the medallions are vital to everything. Can you explain that for us Laucian?"

Kylie's head snaps around to stare at Lilia. The incredible heartlessness of her statement leaves Kylie feeling a bit cold. Not so long ago, Kylie thought of the elven sorceress as someone to look up to. Perhaps that was a mistake.

Nariya rushes in, offsetting Lilia's thoughtlessness only a little.

Kylie shakes her head, glad that the centaurs cannot actually understand what they are saying. Hopefully, Laucian will be more sensitive, or their mission may end right here.

Laucian’s eyes narrow at the mage, How could she be so cold hearted. They are not in much different straights then we are. One is a way of life and the other is the clans son and perhaps future leader of the clan….

"I will do the best that I can," his gaze passing back over to Lilia for fleeting moment as he returned to the Clan master.

Back in Centaur….

"In a village not far from here, there lays a elaborate ruin of a crystal dome. About it used to lay 12 medallions,” making the size of his hands. “One of which is named after your Kin. We were wondering if by some chance you knew of its whereabouts?” he asked hopefully. “Once recovered and placed within, many more Elves would stand against this Black Horde and our culture secured.”

“We only ask for this medallion or information that you may have in hopes to recover it. In return,” he lowered himself to one knee before the clan master and his people. “You have our allegiance and friendship, to your people.” His gaze followed up to look into the Clanmaster’s eyes. “We will help you recover your son. “ he said simply.

"We are truly sorry for your loss, Clanmaster. I cannot imagine the pain that you are going through. Nor would I wish such a fate on a father. But Your son is not lost to you by any means. Your people are fighting amongst themselves over a decision to fight for your son or swear allegiance to man who would dare call you friend then betray you.”

"It is not my place to speak for your clan, Nor would I. But I find myself wondering… If you swear allegiance to this ancient one, How do you know you will get your son back? Could you and your people live under the collar of bondage and slavery to whom would betray you in a heart beat? Throw you and your people to the wolves when they are no longer of use. I know I surely could not! Nor would stand by and watch another make such a choice.” He paused wondering if he had overstepped his boundary but his heart compelled him to go further. "What would a son think of a father who would lay down and let his freedom be taken from him? I truly believe your son, would not wish you to swear allegiance."

"Your kin are strong, noble and fierce warriors and people. Their was once a time we Elves, centaurs, brownies lived together in peace. Your Clan would not be alone if you were to take the fight to the Ancient one. Brownies have pledged to help fight the evil that holds sway over this land, We Elves have done the same… Where do the Centaurs stand? Fight and reclaim their lost honor and son. Or will they eat scraps from Ancient one's boot."

Laucian gave a deep breath knowing full well he could be killed where he stood for the words he spoke. But deep down he hoped that perhaps he touched a fire within the centaurs soul, a fire that was diminished from his son being taken.

"Clanmaster, I mean no disrespect to you or your people. But I would not wish to see such an Honorable and Noble people fight alongside Orcs and Evil men that would betray their word. Nor would many of your clan..."

Manticore Medallion:

Lia and Valena have made a few discoveries within the manticore cave. A skeleton in elfin robes was discovered. Valena determined it to have been a female, one who was tortured as she had numerous broken bones. The pair believes that the skeleton belongs to the last Keeper of the Mother Tree.

Further back in the depths of the cave, a silver chest was spotted high on a ledge in the manticores den. It’s clear that the manticores didn’t put it here since they don’t have hands. But before anything further could be done, the lines attached to the pair are pulled! They are being called back to the flying barge.

Valena urges Lia to grab the silver chest, but the Priestess of Eilistraee has other ideas. Instead she cuts her line, retrieves a tower shield from a past manticore victim and gently drags the elfin skeleton on to it. Lia then begins to drag the shield and body towards the front of the cave.

Valena has her bow drawn and keeps watch while Lia works. There are several flashes of light near the front of the cave followed by a loud roar! You just catch a glimpse of a manticore being struck by multiple Magic Missiles!

Lia hears Talen chanting a spell and two more Magic Missiles strike the manticore.

Valena takes aim and begins to rapid fire. Three arrows are fired, one right after the other, and all slam into the wounded manticore. The beast lets out a weak roar and then collapses in the cave entrance. Sherwood urges onward.

As the girls reach the cave exit, Sherwood lowers the barge to make it easier to bring the skeleton on board. The skeleton is lifted up on the tower shield and dragged on deck. Valena and Lia soon follow. The sky is currently clear of other manticores, but for how long?

Centaur Medallion:

In the centaur village, Laucian speaks with the Clan Master, an elder who rules the tribe. The Ehlonna follower explains how the elves have returned to save the Mother Tree, only to find the Sylvan Realm surrounded by the Black Hordes who are ruled by the ancient wizard Moorkroft.

In return, the Clan Master reveals the cause of all the trouble. The master of the Tree Palace has kidnapped his youngest son as leverage to force the Centaurs to follow him. Some in the tribe want to attack the Ancient Master, while others fear his reprisal for such an action.

Laucian confers with his companions who mostly offer sympathy to the centaurs blight while Lilia wonders about the Centaur Medallion. Laucian then turns back to the centaurs speaking in their tongue. The Clan Master listens to the words being said.

“According to legend, what you say is true,” the Clan Master agrees. “The elves and the centaurs did live in peace and harmony. But they abandoned this place and all those who dwell in it.”

The Clan Master thinks for a time, visibly torn on what to do.

“I know of the medallion that you speak of. It was trusted to my ancestors long ago by the elves. If it is true that the elves are returning and that you wish to establish peaceful relations with us, then I will give you the chance to do so. I will give you the medallion you seek after you rescue my son from the Ancient Master. Only then will the word of the elves be accepted as the truth.”

The Clan Master will bow and then trot off with is entourage.

Kylie:

Laucian seems as surprised by Lilia's callousness as the rest of us. After a moment of looks at her in shock, he turns back to the centaur ClanMaster. They talk for some moments, then the ClanMaster turns and leaves.

Listening to Laucian's explanation, Kylie considers the situation carefully. "I can understand the ClanMaster's hesitancy, though without the medallion, it will be that much harder to retrieve his son. It seems we will have to try to defeat Moorkroft without the aid of the elven heroes.

"We have little choice at this point but to press on to our next destination. Hopefully, we will have greater success there."

Laucian
“According to legend, what you say is true,” the Clan Master agrees. “The elves and the centaurs did live in peace and harmony. But they abandoned this place and all those who dwell in it.”
Laucian remains quiet upon hearing this. There was no need to let them know of our losses here in the Slyvian realm. The elves did indeed leave but abandon we did not. Some Elves remained behind to watch over the mother tree and their interests.
Laucian’s features remain impassive though his thoughts went wild in thought… Here they were trusted with our Medallion but we have to earn it back with their trust….Isn’t this a betrayal of the trust that was put into them?

Having nothing further to say Laucian bows in return and watches the clan master trot away. Looking back to the others, Laucian says in common, “They do have the medallion in which we seek. It was entrusted to them by our ancestors. Though the Clanmaster wishes to test our sincerity and motives, Before we can reclaim the medallion and the centaurs as friends, We must recover the Clanmaster’s son.” he said simply looking to Lilia in particular he says, “Centaur problems are now our problems, Like it or not, We must see this to whatever end.”

Lia

Dragging the skeleton remains of the unfortunate, Lia moves fairly slowly not to lose her cargo. With a flash of light from the cave mouth and a roar soon echoed through the cave. She soon hears her brother’s voice and kinds comfort there within as two more magic missiles light up the manticore. Its form soon dropped to the cave floor. She heard Sherwood’s call to hurry, Lifting the tower shield a tad higher Lia began to take longer strides.

Lifting the tower shield to the barge she pushes it onto it and follows suit. She looked up to her uncle and said, “The skeleton will tell us of how it got into the cave and wrote a letter.” Reaching into her sack she placed the scroll near the body. There was a silver chest on a ledge within the cave but something didn’t feel right. If the body was placed then chest surely would have been looted…” she said looking up. “I would have grabbed the chest but I felt it could be trapped and I did not have time to see how it was placed. I’m sorry Uncle.”

Laucian’s eyes narrow at the mage, How could she be so cold hearted. They are not in much different straights then we are. One is a way of life and the other is the clans son and perhaps future leader of the clan….
Gee! You act like Lilia never said anything tactless before!

“A logical decision,” Lilia states in regards to the Clan Master’s decision. “It spares his tribe from acting and being the target of the Moorkroft’s vengeance. He is a wise being.”

“As I see it, we have two choices here. One is to continue along as Kylie suggested. Perhaps once we’re reunited with the others will be able to formulate a plan to rescue the centaur boy and gain the medallion. It may be possible to rescue the boy without having to engage Moorkroft, so we may not have to face him just yet. We’ll have to see how the situation plays out.”

“The second choice is use our natural talents to find the Centaur Medallion and take it without their consent. I’m not suggesting the use of violence, but our talents for stealth and covert use of magic. This runs the risk of losing an ally. For the moment, I would not condone this tactic. At least right now. The future might dictate otherwise.”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Valena:

Keeping one eye on the cave entrance and one on Lia, Valena carefully moves forward amongst the rubbish in the cave.

A manticore is spotted and the boys use magic to attack it! Spying an opening, Valena fires multiple arrows into the beast. Much to her relief it falls!

Sherwood lowers the barge to ground level and we quickly scramble on board. Lia quickly explains the situation to Sherwood, but seems to have left out some details.
Lia wrote:Lifting the tower shield to the barge she pushes it onto it and follows suit.
“What Lia is trying to say is that we fond an elfin skeleton that we believe was planted here by the enemy. It is our guess that she was the former Keeper of the Tree. It is our hope that Lia will be able to communicate with her with a Speak with Dead spell.”

“The silver chest in question was found in the back of the cave, the skeleton near the front. It is my believe that it was not connected to the skeleton and that the manticores had nothing to do with it.”

Valena will keep watch on the skies in case another manticore returns to their cave.

Sherwood:

Seeing a manticore flying closer, Sherwood directs Talen to pull on the explorers’ lines. As we wait, the monster gets closer and closer until we have to act. A pair of Magic Missile spells does some damage to the manticore and Valena finishes it off with arrows.

As they watch, Lia comes up dragging what appears to be a skeleton on a old tower shield. The barge is moved closer to accommodate them.

“Wait a minute, Lia. What chest? What letter?”
Valena wrote:“What Lia is trying to say is that we fond an elfin skeleton that we believe was planted here by the enemy. It is our guess that she was the former Keeper of the Tree. It is our hope that Lia will be able to communicate with her with a Speak with Dead spell.”

“The silver chest in question was found in the back of the cave, the skeleton near the front. It is my believe that it was not connected to the skeleton and that the manticores had nothing to do with it. It seemed worth checking out.”
“Okay, that makes some better sense,” Sherwood answers, digesting the information given to him. “The sky seems to be clear for a moment. Why don’t you go back and retrieve this chest, Lia? Then we’ll move off. But be quick. This fresh kill is bound to attract other predators.”

Lia

Looking Sheepishly between Valena and Sherwood as they talk about her babbled words. Her Uncle soon turns to her and says.
“Okay, that makes some better sense,” Sherwood answers, digesting the information given to him. “The sky seems to be clear for a moment. Why don’t you go back and retrieve this chest, Lia? Then we’ll move off. But be quick. This fresh kill is bound to attract other predators.”
“Okay Uncle.” Lia jumps off the barge once again and runs towards the cave mouth. Following the rope that she had cut away, she retraces her steps, Spotting the Chest Lia will check around the chest and then take it. And proceed to move back through the cave with the chest to the barge…

To Save Mother Tree!

Kylie:

To Kylie's mind, they must have the medallion to recover the elven heroes, and thus they must rescue the centaur boy. Lilia suggests an alternative, but it is distasteful even given her own history.

"I, too, do not condone taking that option. Doing so would forever destroy hopes of an alliance with the centaurs, and I believe we will need them to defeat the orcish hordes of Moorkroft. We must find a way to rescue the boy."

Manticore Medallion:

Lia and Valena have emerged from the cave. Lia comes bearing the elfin skeleton found in the cave. The hope is that Lia will be able to communicate with the skeleton using a Speak with Dead spell at a later date.

The girls explain to Sherwood and Talen about the skeleton and the chest they found in the cave. With the skies currently clear, Sherwood suggests that Lia go back for the chest.

Lia rushes back into the cave, past the remains of numerous manticore victims. The chest is easily located once more. Lia climbs up to get a closer look at it. The chest is small and easily carried in one arm. Delicate elfin etching is noted on it and the chest does not appear to be trapped in any matter.

Retrieving the chest, Lia scrambles back to the barge. Once there, Sherwood pilots the barge up and away from the manticore caves.

While flying on to their next destination, attention is turned towards the silver chest. It is not trapped, nor is it locked. There is a catch and when released the top lifts up. Inside is a beautiful silver medallion. Elfin runes are etched into one side, while the other shows a manticore in flight. It seems to be the proper size to fit into the base of the crystal platform!

The explorers relax as they fly toward their next destination. Food is consumed and the shadows grow long as nightfall isn’t too far off. Robin directs you to the next believed location of Eagle Medallion.

Up ahead on the top of a rocky peak is what from a distance appears to be a bird’s nest. Inside the nest you can see an eagle resting. However as you get closer the eagle grows larger and larger until its truly mammoth in size!

“It’s a roc!” Sherwood calls out. “Only they grow to such a size!”

As you get closer you can see that the nest is not constructed of twigs and branches, but from the logs of trees themselves! The great brown bird is easily sixty feet long with a wingspan at least twice that size! It’s the size of a house!

Centaur Medallion:

The negotiations with the centaurs has not gone as planned. The Clan Master does possess the Centaur Medallion, but only will part with it if the elves rescue his missing son from Moorkroft.

It is decided to continue on towards the believed location of the next medallion. Nariya leads the group along in a due west direction towards the Griffon Medallion. The griffons are known to use a very large clearing in the Elfin Forest as a hunting ground. That is your destination.

The day winds on and night begins to fall. Eventually you’ll camp for the evening.

Sherwood:

Sherwood watches and waits for Lia to return. Finally she does and comes on board with a small silver chest. Sherwood restores the barges invisibility and has it rise higher into the air while moving off to the west.

The chest is inspected and opened. One of the medallions that we seek is found inside!

“That was fairly easy,” Sherwood notes. “Let’s hope collecting the rest of these medallions is just as easy.”

There’s some downtime as the barge crosses the Sylvan Realm towards the far coast. Sherwood slows the barge’s speed down as Robin notes we are getting closer to the area where we believe the Eagle Medallion to be.

Sherwood racks his brain, trying to remember what he can about rocs. “I’ve never seen one of these creatures before, I’ve only heard about them. But I seem to recall that in spite of their great size, that they are no more intelligent than any other normal bird. We may have to wait for the roc to go off hunting before we can search the nest for the Eagle Medallion.”

Sherwood will keep the barge well away from the roc nest. He’ll search for a place to sit down since it appears that they may be here a while.

Talen:

Talen is greatly alarmed when the manticore is sighted! He tugs on the girls’ safety lines vigorously. The beast gets closer and closer until Sherwood directs us to act. Uncle hits the manticore with five magic missiles, while Talen can only muster two. Valena appears and downs the monster with a trio of arrows.

Lia appears next dragging a large shield that has a skeleton on top of it! Talen moves to the edge to help them drag it on board.

“That’s a strange thing to collect”, he tells his sister. “Is it important?”

Talen then hears that they believe this to be the body of the fallen Tree Keeper. Lia plans to use magic to speak to her and perhaps learn more information. Even better, a silver chest holding the object of our search is found!

“The craftsmanship is amazing!”

Uncle moves the barge on towards the next destination. The hours drag pass and Talen can’t help but wonder about how the other group is doing. He hopes that Kylie is all right and mentally kicks himself for not having given her the gift Lia acquired for him. He’s such an idiot at times!

The brownie comes to the from the barge as we get closer to the area he believes we’ll find the Eagle Medallion. Up ahead is a giant birds nest. A really mammoth birds nest!

“Good grief! That thing is huge! We’re not going to have to fight that are we?”

Valena:

Lia goes back to retrieve the silver chest and Valena’s hunch provides to be correct! The Manticore Medallion is inside!

“This might make our search a bit easier if all the medallions are in chests like this. At least we know what to look for now.”

The trip to the next medallion gives Valena time to thoroughly clean her bow and sharpen her arrows. She feeds Aerie and spends time with her new friend.

Master Robin alerts us that we are nearing our destination. Sure enough what looks like an eagle nest appears. But it keeps getting bigger!
“It’s a roc!” Sherwood calls out. “Only they grow to such a size!”

Valena nods as Sherwood speaks about what he knows of rocs. “I have only heard tales of birds this large too. I am most thankful to not has encountered one before. By the Lady of the Forests she is big!”
Talen wrote:“Good grief! That thing is huge! We’re not going to have to fight that are we?”
“I would not agree to harm any innocent creature if it can be helped”, Valena says. “But perhaps we have an alternative. I can ask Aerie if she can communicate with the roc one bird to another. If we can establish a dialog, then perhaps we may peacefully locate the Eagle Medallion. Did not one of the beings that Laucian and Nariya say that perhaps the roc could be an ally? What say you, Sherwood?”

Nariya:

Lilia offers two suggestions, one of which would mean trying to steal the Medallion from under the centaurs' noses. That's not one of Nariya's skills, so she'll let the experts try if they decide to.

It is decided to continue on towards the believed location of the next medallion. Nariya leads the group along in a due west direction towards the Griffon Medallion. The griffons are known to use a very large clearing in the Elfin Forest as a hunting ground. That is your destination.

A decision is made to leave the centaurs for now. Nariya eagerly leads the way as they move on towards where the griffons should be. She is glad to be blazing a trail once more, and lets the sting of the initial failure with the centaurs wash away.

It probably was better that Laucian talked with the centaurs rather than herself, and especially not Lilia. They might have had to fight their way free of the centaur village, and Nariya would not have enjoyed that for one moment.

The day winds on and night begins to fall. Eventually you’ll camp for the evening.

"I'll happily sit up for first watch," Nariya says once a suitable camp is found. "The travel has been most welcome and I'm not tired in the least," she'll add, figuring some of them might be more worn out from the earlier run and the long hike.
Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

With nothing left to do here in the centaur village, they press on toward the clearing the griffons are reputed to frequent. Nariya leads the group through the woods toward their goal. As evening fades into night, they decide to set up camp.

"I can take the third or fourth watch," Kylie offers. Once she's had her rest, she can re-memorize any spells she's used today. As they discuss the plan, she works up a healthy meal for the group from the food they have available in their packs and her magic book.

By mutual agreement, we depart the centaur village. But we will return at some point. The rest of the day is spent walking through the vast Elfin Forest. Night begins to fall and we set up camp.

Laucian

With little less to do within the Centaur Village, Laucian listens to Lilia’s two Ideas. One of which requires the stealing of a certain item. Laucian Looks up and stares at Lilia for a moment. The says quite simply, "If you steal it from them we are no Better then this Ancient one….. Have you learned nothing?" Shaking head in great displeasure Laucian said, "If that is the course you wish to take, Do so without my knowledge."

Before leaving the Centaur Village Laucian will approach Bech, Expressing their thanks for his assistance and showing them to their leader.

Soon enough Nariya leads them out into the wilderness, leaving the centaur villiage in their wake. With a last look toward the centaur villiage Laucian gives those on looking centaurs a departing wave of friendship, before the dense foliage swallowed any sign of them.

Laucian remains quiet as they make their way through the woods towards their next destination.

The day winds on and night begins to fall. Eventually you’ll camp for the evening.
Taking off his pack and placing it to the ground Laucian looks about and then begins to start the making of camp.

“I’ll take watch for long as I can ,as well, It will give me time to pray and prepare for tommarrow’s travel.”

Laucian will go about sharpening his arrows and sword then pray to Ehlonna for her guidance and protection. When he goes to bed Onyx will be at his feet.

Occ- Laucian will take whatever shift that will allow the recovery of his spells, as he has to sleep the most out of the group. Spell list will be updated shortly

Lia

Jumping back up onto the barge with the chest underneath his arm. Lia watched as Sherwood took the barge to the skies. Placing the chest before her she begins to look for traps, seeing none Lia slowly opens the the lid, a smile slowly forming upon her face.

Reaching in she picks it up and looks at the etching within the medallion then the manticore in flight. “It is a work of art.” she said softly as the others say just how easy it is to get the medallion. Placing it back within the chest and closing the lid.

Upon seeing the great Bird, Lia shares her brother’s sentiment, “ I wonder what it eats?” she asks in amazement as she tries to figure out how a bird could get so big.

Soon the topic of how to approach the great creatures comes to pass. Lia thinks for a moments after Valena says that perhaps Her Hawk could accomplish the task for them. Looking to Valena she can’t help say, “If Aerie is able to commune with the Roc then Let us try. If it does not we may have to wait till morning…Eilistraee does great her followers the spellto speak with animals, Perhaps it would be of use, if Aerie fails?”
