New Frontiers #80
The Guardians have entered the Ice Palace from the highest tower. A bitter cold surrounds the area and even inside there is no break from the winds. Any windows are just wide open to the elements. There is no escape from the cold in the Ice Palace. The priests in the group cast their Endure Cold spells upon everyone except Argent for protection.
Moving down the stairs, the Guardians have reached the first level from the top of the tower. No one seems to be around, but Sir Corley does not wish to take any chances. While Farian creeps down the stairs to towards the level below, Yusef explores a hallway.
Moving quickly and silently, Yusef scans the area. Each opening leads into an individual chamber. Each chamber has an open window to the outside. A pile of snow lies underneath each window and it unevenly covers much of the floor thanks to the winds. There are no tracks in the snow, nor is there any furniture in the rooms. The chambers' appearances suggest that not only has no one been here recently, but that these rooms are not being used.
Meanwhile, Farian has continued down the spiraling stairs. About another thirty feet down the stairs another landing is reached. This one looks out into a hallway very similar to the one above. Again no one is here and the only sound heard is the whistling of the wind.
The Guardians continue to move down the stairs and reach the second landing. Once more the hallway is explored and again none of the chambers seem to have seen any use.
Once more the Guardians continue downward. From what you can see out the windows, the level of the tower you are approaching seems to be a central hub. Small open bridges can be seen connecting this tower to the upper levels of four other towers. All of them converge up ahead and are each 90 degrees apart.
As you near the landing, noise is heard from up ahead. The group stops as they try to decipher the noise. It sounds like squeals of laughter and giggling. Farian and Yusef creep ahead to see who or what is making this noise.
The scouts safely reach the landing and dare to peak inside. Unlike the upper levels, this area of the tower is one large chamber. The entrances to the bridges can be seen and numerous windows allow the weather and light inside. A ring of pillars surrounds the chamber, about halfway in to the center. Drifts of snow are here and there in the wide-open room.
The source of the noise is coming from a pair of teenage-looking girls who are playing. They are chasing each other and occasionally throw snowballs. The pair are laughing and giggling as they play.
At first glance they appear human, but if your eyes linger you quickly realize that the pair are not purebloods. Each of them has bluish skin and dark blue hair. One of the girl's skin is darker and appears tougher. She also has a pair of leathery wings protruding from her back.
The second girl is the more normal looking of the two discounting her skin and hair color. However, this turns out to not be the case as she has a pair of horns protruding from her forehead!
Both girls wear outfits similar to the one the Priestess Argent drove off back at the fortress. They wear ice blue robes, a silver circlet and a wide silver belt. Neither appears to be feeling any discomfort from the cold and both are human-sized. They also seem oblivious that they are being watched.
The stairs continue to spiral downward.

Try it and find out!
Sir Corley
Corley:
Sir Corley keeps a watchful eye as Yusef scouts the hallway. Surprisingly the chambers are not only empty, but seem to have not seen any use! The next level down is also vacant.
“I wonder why they made this Ice Palace so big that whole areas are not being used? Were they counting on needing the room in the future?”
As we continue down, noise is heard from the level below. Surprisingly it sounds like laughing and giggling as if children were at play. Farian and Yusef continue on while everyone remains on the stairs. The pair returns after a few minutes with their report.
Upon hearing of their findings and the girls’ strange appearance, Sir Corley cannot help but shoot a glance at Yusef.
“Could these beings be of mixed ancestry like yourself?”
This is certainly not the kind of enemy he was prepared to engage.
“Regardless, our course remains clear. They wear the garb of the enemy and must be dealt with. We have two courses of action open to us. We simply swoop in and remove them from the field of battle, or we try to gain information from them. Whatever we do, it must be done quickly as we cannot allow them to alert the rest of the palace to our presence.”

Argent:
Argent follows along as best she can as the group goes down the stairs. There is no relief from the cold and the winds inside either, but then again that’s not a surprise.
“The followers of the Cold One are immune to her frosty touch,” Argent says matter of factually. “Remember how Kharyna went barefoot in the snow?”
“Its part of their dogma or so she once mentioned. Let cold into every building and cover the lands in ice. Hard to believe that any rational being would go along with that!”
After hearing about the two half-demon girls up ahead, Argent has nothing to add. If they need to be eliminated so be it. It doesn’t matter to the Invoker.

Grondar:
While the level is explored by Yusef and Farian, Grondar focusses on watching their backs. After a little while, they report back, having found nothing of interest.
"It is possible that they have been more numerous here at other times. We know not how long this castle has been here."
At Sir Corley's order, they move downward again. This second level proves to be as empty as the first.
They continue down the stairs once more. Half way down, from Grondar's viewpoint, the group stops ahead of him. He can hear faint noise from up ahead, but cannot make it out. As they appear to have stopped, Grondar keeps an eye on the stairs behind them until the leaders decide it is time to continue on.

Yusef:
Moving down the corridor, Yusef is surprised to find that there is no sign of habitation. Under other conditions, he would expect to find dust accumulating. However, being open to the outside, the wind no doubt sweeps it away.
Yusef reports back to Sir Corley. "All of the rooms appear to be unused in quite some time. I can find to sign of anyone being on this level recently."
The Guardians check out the next floor in much the same manner. It is much like the previous one, both in layout and lack of occupants. It would seem the inhabitants are not expecting their assault, or are waiting for them somewhere below.
Again they descend the stairs. Approaching the landing on this level, both Yusef and Farian hear voices. Taking a moment to observe, they see what appear to be children, girls at play, though their appearance is unusual - at least to ones not accustomed to dealing with the inhabitants of the lower planes.

"It is entirely possible, Sir Corley," Yusef replies. The inhabitant of the lower planes are highly varied, and their descendents can take on unusual appearances." Yusef pauses to consider a moment. "Another possibility is that they are descended of dragons. I have heard of such pairings in the past having produced offspring. These may be such. Either way, they are dressed as priestess of the Cold One; perhaps they are apprentices?"Corley wrote:“Could these beings be of mixed ancestry like yourself?”
Yusef scratches his chin. "Forgive me, Sir Corley, but I would hesitate to kill children - even such as these. I don't know if we can gain much information from them, though it may be worth trying. If you will allow it, I suggest a few of us sneak up on them and subdue them quickly. Then we may question them once they are bound. It shouldn't take long. Then we can leave them behind incapacitated."“Regardless, our course remains clear. They wear the garb of the enemy and must be dealt with. We have two courses of action open to us. Farian
Farian moved slowly down the stairway finding nothing of interest for several steps. Hearing the noise he raises up his hand to halt the column. And peers down into the room, noting two teenage looking girls playing in the snow. As he watches them he can’t help but notice the great wings on the back of one and horns on the other.
Talk of their ancestory comes into play.
they’ll be coming at us with everything they have. But if you want to take them alive we can try.. And if not.” he twirled his war hammer in his hand.
“Ill go invisible and circle around them, The one with the wings should be taken out first so block the windows if we can.”

Chareos
“Its part of their dogma or so she once mentioned. Let cold into every building and cover the lands in ice. Hard to believe that any rational being would go along with that!”
“Unless they were just naïve of the choices they could conceivably make.” he adds quietly.
Chareos will merely stand by and wait to see what is decided. If it is decided to attack the two half demons Chareos will assist the best he can.

Corley:
Sir Corley will let Yusef pick those to accompany him on this mission and the manner in which they are to carry it out. It is his suggestion after all.
“Dragons, huh? I have heard that a both Silver Dragons and White Dragons favor the cold. I guess that both creatures would willingly serve the cold goddess should it fit their needs. Another creature we might have to battle.”"It is entirely possible, Sir Corley," Yusef replies. “As I would I, my friend. Indeed, I would be loath to engage the fairer gender in battle unless unavoidable. Very well, you make take some of the stealthier Guardians and try to subdue the maidens. The rest of us will linger near the stairs. I fear my armor precludes me in assisting in this manner. Armored knights are not known for their silence.”Yusef scratches his chin. Argent:
It seems that Yusef will be given the opportunity to capture the two half-demoness’. Argent will hold her ground unless her services are required.
Sir Corley wrote:“I wonder why they made this Ice Palace so big that whole areas are not being used? Were they counting on needing the room in the future?”
“While it is true that we do not know how long this has been here, I can’t help be feel that it is new. Remember the Cold One seeks revenge upon Kharyna for her betrayal in Everwinter. And given that this palace is completely composed of ice, I would wager that it was magically constructed in some manner. Perhaps like the lair of Opikus before it was destroyed. It could simply be a case of this is how big the magic invoked made this place, not that any planning was involved. Of course all of this is just speculation.”Grondar wrote:"It is possible that they have been more numerous here at other times. We know not how long this castle has been here."
“That is true,” Argent agrees. “Much was the case with Kharyna. She didn’t realize how evil the Cold One was until later.”Chareos wrote:"Unless they were just naïve of the choices they could conceivably make." he adds quietly.
“I’ve been in the den of a white dragon before, and it would enjoy the weather here. But I cannot believe that any silver dragon would willing serve the Cold One. They are kind and just, not cruel and evil.”Sir Corley wrote:“Dragons, huh? I have heard that a both Silver Dragons and White Dragons favor the cold. Ivy
Ivy:
Ivy casts the remainder of her cold protection spells and the group moves on. The upper levels of the great tower seem to be deserted. But as a lower level is approached noise is heard and the scouts go forth to investigate. Half-demon girls are spotted dressed in the garb of Priestess of Auril!
Yusef expresses his concern over simply attacking them.
“I cannot battle them either,” Ivy states. “My faith precludes me from killing living beings. But I have several spells that could assist in their capture. I have a Silence spell or can cast Hold Person. I also have a Charm spell that might make them easier to talk with.”
“Of course. Happy to do so.”Grondar looks around. "Since we have so many available, I might as well accept one myself. If you would be so kind, Lady Ivy?" In truth, it will make him more comfortable, though he doesn't wish to look weak in front of Aria.
He turns to Ivy. "Would you be so kind as to share Azrella's blessings with our fair Aria?"

Aria:
The group moves slowly downward and the place seems to be deserted thus far. How disappointing! There’s nothing like a good fight to get the blood flowin’!
Farian and Yusef report on their finding of two Auril girls playing.
“Evil with a pretty face is still evil,” Aria retorts. “Treating them like children or a lesser threat is a mistake! We need to take them out now before they can cause any mischief.”
But it’s decided to try and capture them. Aria thinks that this is a mistake, but it’s not her call. But she’ll come a runnin’ to bash heads should they get into trouble.
“Very well,” Aria mutters. She’s happy to be free from this retched cold, but won’t show it!Grondar colors a bit. "Alas, I am afraid I am all out. However, I know Lady Ivy is well-stocked with this particular blessing."
He turns to Ivy. "Would you be so kind as to share Azrella's blessings with our fair Aria?"

Sherra:
Having stopped, Sherra keeps a watch behind them. The group seems to be discussing something, but she doesn't catch all of it. It seems though that they've stumbled upon someone in one of the chambers ahead. Sherra can only guess the situation is not an easy one, otherwise they would have just pushed forward and dealt with it already.
Until something happens, Sherra will keep a silent watch with Grondar making sure nothing comes from behind or above.

Yusef:
He turns to Ivy. "If you are willing, I would like you to cast your Silence on the pair just as I move to attack. We don't want to give them advance warning of our attack, but it would be good to prevent them from casting any spells they may have. If they spot me coming, then cast your spell immediately and I will rush in."
Looking back at Corley, Yusef says, "Once Ivy has cast her spell, then the rest of you may move in and assist. However, I recommend that Sherra and perhaps one or two others stay back and cover our rear.
"Our first goal is to prevent them from getting away or alerting anyone of our presence. Our second goal is to subdue them for questioning. Please don't kill them unless the first goal appears in jeopardy.
"Any questions?" he asks, looking around at those gathered nearby.
Once final plans are in place, Yusef will begin maneuvering toward the young women. He'll make the best use he can of any shadows or cover that might be available. If he's spotted before he's in position, Yusef will rush to the attack, trusting in Ivy to cast her spell at the right time. Either way, he'll rely on his hands and feet to subdue the girls.
Corley wrote:“Dragons, huh? I have heard that a both Silver Dragons and White Dragons favor the cold. I guess that both creatures would willingly serve the cold goddess should it fit their needs. Another creature we might have to battle.”
"I would have to agree with the fair lady, Sir Corley. If by chance they are dragonborn, then a white dragon parent or grandparent is the more likely."Argent wrote:“I’ve been in the den of a white dragon before, and it would enjoy the weather here. Nor can we know their motives and reasons for the choices they made or that were made for them."Chareos wrote:“Unless they were just naïve of the choices they could conceivably make.” he adds quietly.
"Thank you for your support, lady Ivy," Yusef says with a smile. "Those spells may be of great help in interrogating them if we can capture them."Ivy wrote:“I cannot battle them either,” Ivy states. “My faith precludes me from killing living beings. But I have several spells that could assist in their capture. I have a Silence spell or can cast Hold Person. I also have a Charm spell that might make them easier to talk with.”
Yusef smiles. "Thank you, Sir Corley. There are times when stealth is as valuable as battle prowess."Corley wrote:“As I would I, my friend. "That's a good idea, Farian. I'll stick to whatever shadows and cover I can find to get close. Then we can attack from opposite directions. Since I won't be able to see you, I'll rely on you to time your attack with mine."Farian wrote:“Ill go invisible and circle around them, The one with the wings should be taken out first so block the windows if we can.”
Yusef frowns at Aria's enthusiasm to slay the girls, though some part of himself yearns to do far worse. "I understand your concern, Lyonessa, and we will do what we have to. However, I believe at least the attempt at capture should be made."Lyonessa wrote:"I too can assist magically that wouldn't lead to us having to kill them," Lyonessa offers. "I have a Charm Person, Hold Person and Hypnotise all available should we want to use any of those."
"I agree that we should not think the pair unable to defend themselves or fight us with spells and weapons," Lyonessa adds to Aria's warning. "If our spells can't hold or charm them, we may not have any other choice," her voice trails off on the last word, seemingly with a tinge of sadness to it.

Post Continued:
The Guardians continue to move through the expansive Ice Palace. On the third level down from the top of the highest tower they have come across a pair of Auril Priestess of unusual appearance. They appear to be bloodlines that can be traced to the lower planes much like Yusef. Their skin is blue in color and one of them has leathery wings, while the other small horns on her forehead.
Yusef pleads for the girls to be captured and not killed out of hand. Sir Corley agrees and allows Yusef to direct the assault.
Farian activates his Ring of Invisibility and moves into the large hub, circling around behind the girls at play. Yusef slips in, trusting his natural skills to keep him unnoticed until the time is right. Ivy and the others keep watch at the entryway.
The girls continue their innocent frolicking until Yusef is in position. The monk sprints the remaining distance between himself and his target. Seeing this, Ivy casts Silence and the area around the girls becomes noise free.
Yusef reaches his target, the girl with the horns, and is on her before she can defend herself. A trio of carefully aimed kicks and punches downs the girl before she can realize what was going on.
Farian blasts the winged girl with his warhammer twice. The attacks stagger the winged girl, but she remains on her feet. She looks around wildly and is very afraid. And then the girl simply vanishes!
GM Notes:
All the attacks done were of the subdue variety. The horned girl will wake up in a few minutes, sooner if assisted. The winged girl was inside the silence field when she vanished. Must be an innate ability.

Yusef:
Seeing Farian vanish from sight, Yusef begins to make his way forward. The lithe holy man slinks towards his prey like a great desert cat on the hunt. In a flurry of action, he is on the nearer of the strange girls just as Ivy's magical Silence settles about them. Three quick blows from fist, foot and elbow put her down fast and quite.
Unfortunately, Farian isn't quite as lucky. His opponent disappears as though she was never there. Yusef mentally kicks himself for not anticipating and adjusting for such a possibility. They must assume that others in the castle will now be alerted to their presence.
Yusef scoops the girl up from the floor at his feet and carries her back to where the others await and sets her down outside the area affected by Ivy's spell.
"We should question this one right away, Sir Corley. The rest of the castle will soon know of our presence," he reports. "Does someone have a rope we can tie her up with?"

"Either way, we will be facing enemies soon I imagine," Lyonessa adds before turning to Sir Corley to see what he wishes to do.

Argent:
The Invoker quietly observes the attack. Yusef silently stalks his prey and puts her down using only his hands and feet with frightening ease. The other girl withstands a couple of hits from the dwarfs’ warhammer and then appears to simply vanish.
Yusef picks up the girl he knocked out and many of the others seem to believe that this is all over with.
Stepping forward, Argent calls out, “Just because you can’t see her, it doesn’t mean that she’s not still here! Make sure she’s not invisible before letting your guard down!”

Farian
Farian grips is Warhammer with a tight grip and looks about for any sign of the Winged Demoness. He landed two sound blows but still the creature did not drop. And for it to simply vanish… perhaps it has a ring much like his.
Looking to the Doors and windows, Farian calls out to his Fellows.
“Keep the door secure And man the windows.. Perhaps it is still amongst us..” supporting Argent’s view.
Hearty one, that one is. Could have been a dwarf in a pervious life!Farian blasts the winged girl with his warhammer twice. The attacks stagger the winged girl, but she remains on her feet. She looks around wildly and is very afraid. And then the girl simply vanishes!

Chareos
Chareos watches as the two scouts move forward and attempt to take out the two priestesses. It only meets in moderate success as Yusef effectively takes out his opponent while Farian didn’t do as well. Even after two war hammer blows the winged girl simply vanishes.
Definitely not a spell. Innate ability perhaps. Or perhaps a magical item.
Chareos steps past Argent Chareos Will move to the doorway quarterstaff in hand. He looks about curiously as he moves forward. “Take some snow and throw it in the air… We may not see her but we will be able to see her form at least for a few moments if she is still here.”

Post Continued:
The Guardians have engaged two half-human, half-demonic Priestesses of Auril. The first goes down quickly under a flurry of blows from Yusef. The second withstands a pair of hammer strikes from Farian and then mysteriously vanishes.
Argent suggests that perhaps the girl didn’t teleport away, but instead is just invisible. On guard once more, Yusef and Farian search for their missing foe as more of the Guardians enter the chamber.
Suddenly, those with more sensitive ears will hear the beating of wings over the wind. The Priestess is flying off towards one of the unguarded exits!
GM Notes:
General direction can be roughly determined. The standard –4 to hit vs. an invisible target still applies.

Yusef:
As he prowls about the room, Yusef catches a faint whisper of something flying overhead. Some instinct warns him that this must be the winged girl. Turning, he races toward the exit that she seemed to be angling for.
If he can get their ahead of her, he'll try to block the opening. Farian and Chareos already have two of the other openings covered, and with a little more help they might be able to pin the girl in the room. Then it's just a matter of tracking her down and subduing her.
Otherwise, Yusef hopes to catch the girl just as she drops altitude to get through the opening. He'll attempt to use any sound she makes to target her, leaping if necessary to be within reach. If he times it right, a second flurry of strikes should put her down just as it did the other girl.

Yusef nods. "Good suggestion. The best way to prevent her escaping may be to have her not want to."
Lyonessa smiles at Yusef's approval, and turns to see if Sir Corley would like her to Charm the girl once she starrts to recover. It would seem though that the winged girl is still in the room and is merely invisible like Argent warned.
She thinks she can hear the beating of wings, but not being able to see her target she's uncertain. Lyonessa empathically asks Dusk if he can sense anything better than her.
Lyonessa is prepared to move into the room if Dusk or someone else pinpoints the other girl and is ready to use her Command spell, telling the winged girl to "stop", if no one can subdue her before she escapes.

Corley:
The attack mostly succeeds as planned. One of the girls is down and the other simply vanishes. Sir Corley leads the others into the large room as soon as Lady Ivy finishes with her spell. While processing what has just transpired, Lady Argent suggests that perhaps the girl has just made herself invisible.
Sir Corley moves to block one of the exits and tries to locate the missing priestess.
“There are times when all of our talents are needed. It is a the wise leader who knows when to use them effectively. Stealth and scouting are always important to military operations.”Yusef smiles. "Thank you, Sir Corley. There are times when stealth is as valuable as battle prowess."
“Proceed,” Sir Corley simply answers. It’s a straightforward mission. No need to go in-depth any further.Looking back at Corley, Yusef says, "Once Ivy has cast her spell, then the rest of you may move in and assist.
