Sir Validar wrote:"If we have a rapid means of transportation continuously available to us, then that would work just fine. Otherwise, we may need to have the interviews closer to one of our bases of operation, such as Pyris or Fort Fletcher."
"We cannot count on that all the time," Sir Alon answers. "The logistics of getting all the potentials to any one particular place will be difficult. It is just simpler to summon them to the Order Hall and interview them there. While I greatly appreciate the efforts of Lord Sharadin and Lady Sallivarian, I cannot help but think we are using their talents as little more than beasts of burden. Carrying us from one place to another. We should not grow accustomed to such luxuries as they will not always be there."
Gabriella:
Sir Validar wrote:"Very good. Just so you understand, I may require your presence for quite a bit of negotiations in the situation with Elcadan and her baronies," Validar says with a knowing smile. "It may require lots of personal meetings as well."
"I expected as much," Lady Allonica states matter-of-factually. "There are areas in these negotiations where my skills will be required. In fact, I may have to tutor you privately in some of these areas."
Sir Validar wrote:"It is good to know that you will be here this day and the next morning. While there are many meetings to be had, in all seriousness and in all honesty, I could use your skills to assist in the negotiations that are bound to take place." Validar pauses for a moment. "And I am certain we can find some time to continue our contemplation of the future as you suggest. That is not an offer I could pass up no matter how full my day might be."
"I find that if something is worth while, time will be made for it. This is most worth while."
Sir Validar wrote:"Waiting at Karn's Keep is a good idea. With luck we will have an opportunity to meet with Sir Corley and the Guardians at Fort Fletcher before the trip back to Pyris."
"It is my understanding that Karn's Keep will be the place you all return to from your mission. So that is the place I wish to be."
Sir Validar wrote:Validar then turns back to the new Duke. "Duke Vanarkus, you mentioned a new leader for Pyris. With all due respect, I am a bit perplexed, as these are our family lands. Our blood has run through this territory for several generations now."
"While I understand that the viper's nest that has been Elcadan will require a large amount of concentration for a considerable amount of time, even after the transition of power is complete, and that the situation here is quite stable, I am loathe to see our beloved home run by even the most agreeable of governors. Pyris will have to support the effort to claim Elcadan and her people will follow her Baron anywhere and fight any foe. They deserve to have a proper leader for them, especially in this difficult time."
"The simple truth of the matter is we cannot rule Elcadan from Pyris. I have been charged to rule this entire area in the King's Name. Should I sit here in the comfortable confines of Castle Pyris and let others rule there in my stead? Should I force the citizens to come here to Pyris so that their claims can be heard in open court?"
"No, my son, to do that would make us little better than the skewed perception they already have of the nobility. The image of the previous Duke was so far removed from the common man that most there probably didn't even realize they had a ruler. A good ruler must be among those who he rules over. He must be visible. I must have a presence there and I must be there to hear their claims in open court. Many of the common men there see the nobility as the enemy. That is the perception I must change. That cannot be changed from Pyris."
"But your concerns are well placed. Indeed, it would be dishonorable to our noble ancestors to simply abandon the lands they worked so hard to forge. I propose that the lands and the title of the Baron of Pyris remain within our bloodline. Therefore, I decree that you shall become the new Baron of Pyris until such time as you are ready to pass the title on to your son or daughter and assume the title of Duke yourself. I realize that your knightly duties will preclude your full involvement at this time. The current seneschal will remain in place to smooth the transition time. May you rule wisely."
Sir Validar wrote:"I cannot believe that force will not be required. I think it is a foregone conclusion, as many of the true leaders of Elcadan will not be quick to give up either their power or their money. They will also be the ones with the largest and best army to face, with troops who will be loyal to the money they have been receiving."
"I must point out that by acting politically at first rather than decisively, it may gain us an advantage with potential allies, but it is at the risk of allowing the enemy to prepare and make plans from a position of strength."
"It is my belief that we will not be dealing with an united front. While it is true that the Merchant Council currently rules Elcadan, they are not an united force. There is bickering and disagreements among their ranks. The most powerful on the council are the ones with the true power. Furnow, the head of the council and the master of the Metals Guild is unquestionably the most powerful."
"Consider them to be little more than thieves, or even wolves. They are united when it is to their advantage, but will turn on each other when the situation changes. If we attack all of them as you propose, then they will put up a united front and our task will be even more difficult. But if we can cause a fracture among them, they may do much of the work for us. For every merchant in high standing in Elcadan, there are several others who would eagerly take their place. I would much rather deal with several small factions than one united force."
Sir Validar wrote:Validar purses his lips as the new Duke speaks. Either he underestimates what the process will be like, or he has a lot of confidence in their ability to deal with whatever the enemy brings to bear.
"I admire the Duke's desire to take control of Elcadan with the proper ceremony. Certainly I will support you in whatever your designs and desires happen to be. I think we can expect the Merchant Council to either ignore the decrees or openly declare "war" on the new leadership. You must be aware that your life and that of the Duchess will be in danger from the moment your decree is made, until the last potential enemy is removed."
"We will need a mage available to counter whatever they may throw at us. As the Lady Sallavarian has made her home an available base to us, I trust that she will also be able to deter the enemy's magickal attacks against you personally. We will also need to have a large enough military contingent ready to defend against an immediate uprising."
"I agree. There will probably be retaliations. Which is why I had hoped that you would be among us during this time of crisis. I will need someone to not only hunt down the demons responsible for this, but to battle the foes we are sure to encounter. I fully realize the danger in this, but I also realize that violence isn't always the answer to every problem we encounter. If we simply attack and try to conquer Elcadan, then most everyone there will resist. Pyris is renowned for its hospitality across the kingdom. We vigorously defend our borders as needed, but to simply attack them out of hand only works to undermine our efforts."
Sir Validar wrote:"My biggest concern in this tactic is that there may be some wise, yet opposing, leaders and merchants who pretend to play along but act as a snake in the grass and incite problems later when the smoke has cleared and everyone's guard is down."
"Then we will deal with them when the time comes. Such a thing as you describe can happen anywhere, Validar, even here in Pyris. Not everyone is always going to agree with your rulings. It's an unpleasant, but unavoidable circumstance. We all abide by the King's Law. If we break it as we see fit, then we are little better than those we fight."
After the meeting, Validar meets with the military force in Pyris. Recruitment will be increased and arriving caravans heavily inspected. Those he meets will promise their understanding and their full cooperation.
Inside the Stone House, Acerion is escorted to a chamber back behind the others he has been in before. There a makeshift shrine to Heironeous has been erected. Crysania is already there.
"I put this place together as a place to pray while traveling with the King," Sharl explains.
"You honor our god with such dedication," Acerion replies, pleased with the fine surroundings. "I can only pray noble Heironeous finds my devotion and prayers made upon the road adequate enough since I lack such fine trappings such as these."
"I am sure he does," Dame Sharl responds. "Many of us walk the same path as you do. Traveling about the country and righting wrongs as needed. While I miss being a member of a regular temple, what we do is just as important. Preaching the word of Heironeous is just as important as demonstrating his aims and goals. We all do our part in our own unique way."
Private Meeting with Duke:
Sir Validar wrote:"I have already begun the process for enlarging the army and employing mercenary troops as well. With luck we will also be able to gain the alliance of the Baron of Ansimont. While we do not know the situation with him and his lords, having them at our side when we arrive in Elcadan can only help our cause. Lady Allonica has agreed to assist us with this sort of task and I will ask her to accompany us on our trip."
"I do not foresee any troubles in Ansimont. Those there have always seemed more concerned about raising their crops than dealing with the intrigues of the kingdom. Talks there have always struck me as being more concerned about the next harvest than who actually rules them. I'm not even sure they have a baron there, or if they do whether he actively rules."
Sir Validar wrote:"I need men who strive to make a difference and I need those who wish to prove themselves. I trust I will not be disappointed in my choice. Sir Corwin is a fine knight and I will help you to be the best warrior and gentleman that you can be."
"I have several tasks that you will be responsible for. Firstly, you will be responsible for maintaining records on military situations in our immediate area. Likely you will be traveling with me to Elcadan and beyond and we need to keep constant control of our numbers."
"Secondly, you need to make yourself aware of the Merchant Councils various military groups and the colors and banners that identify them. It is important to know who we are facing on the field of battle. You will have until I return from the attack on Keln to compile this information."
"Further, I want you to assemble a contingent of several messengers. As my herald, you will be responsible for sending messages as required. We will need riders and horses. The first task will be to send word to the largest nearby cities that we are hiring mercenary troops here in Pyris. We will be paying standard pay rates for mercenary troops, plus 50% for those who see battle action and another 50% if those troops are victorious, plus potential spoils. I want these notices crafted and posted in the following cities and towns: Gateway, Crossroads, Favaro, Nemiston and, of course, here in Pyris and Timberline. Once we start to control territories of the old Duchy of Elcadan, we will make sure we can recruit from there as well."
Validar will have procured a proper badge and medallion to present to the new Herald. "In addition to these indications of your rank, you are the bearer of my standard, until I have the opportunity to acquire a proper standard bearer. I have the ultimate confidence in you and will return in a few days. If you have any questions, ask them now or first thing in the morning, for I leave with the King tomorrow for the attack on New Keln."
“I will get started immediately, milord. It will be ready upon your return.”
Lady Vera:
Sir Validar wrote:"I pray that you forgive my boldness in suggesting these terms, but I feel it will be the best for Stone Ridge and the best for Cynalon. I would ask you to petition the King and The Duke of Corunglain for Stone Ridge to become a barony under the feudal control of the new Duchy being created by Duke Relon. In exchange, we will secure your borders, we will assemble an army and train those that require it, and we will assist in every matter in bringing Ardelphia and Stone Ridge back to life. Further we will endeavor to continue to personally help in securing the rest of Corunglain's borders and work to expand them. We will supply them with replacement of siege engines and additional machines as well."
"Corunglain will be losing nothing they do not currently have and gaining a partner and a strong ally in the north to defend their lands. Stone Ridge will be gaining everything including being a part of a Duchy that will be willing and able to make certain that it is never lost again."
Validar will pause and gauge the reception by the Lady Ardel. "Certainly you do not have to decide now. But I think I offer you very strong terms that would be mutually beneficial."
Lady Vera will be mildly surprised by all of this. “I would happily give you this reward for the liberation of Ardelphia. But I am really in no position to make such demands to the King and to the Duke of Corunglain. Ardelphia is not yet liberated and my political power is almost non-existent. Also, are there not other lands outside of Ardelphia that would be in-between its borders and those of the new Duchy of Elcadan? How would you get them to change their borders too?”
Sir Validar wrote:Eventually, Gabriella and Validar will have some time alone again, late in the evening. "I would like to thank you for attending several of the meetings this day with me. If you are to assist with the negotiations to come, surely the more information you have now, the better."
"But there will be time to talk about conquest and politics, battle and diplomacy, my dearest lady. For now I wish to simply forget about all that and gaze into the marvelously wonderful dark pools that are your eyes. I could lose myself in those depths and never wish to be seen again."
Validar finds himself a place to sit and motions the lovely Gabriella to join him. "I have spoken so much today, I think my jaw may now be stronger than my sword arm. I would be pleased to hear your voice now, much more than my own. Please indulge me, if you would, my lady. Tell me what of your dreams for our future together?"
Lady Allonica will sit as directed. “Now you know what my days are typically like,” she says with a weary smile. “My dreams for the future? I wish for a peaceful land where I can raise our children in safety. Where we don’t have to take up arms against our own citizens. Where outside dangers are few and far in-between. That would be nice.”
Karn’s Keep:
The next morning goodbyes are said to those in Pyris and everyone gets in the Stone House once more. Lady Sallavarian teleports everyone to Karn’s Keep. The Stone House opens again and you’re in the keep's Grand Hall.
(Check out the second update in Elfquest #2 for a larger description of Karn’s keep and the Grand Hall.)
Lord Sharadin and his daughters are there to greet everyone along with many of the keep’s guards.
“Welcome to Karn’s Keep, Your Majesty. Please, make yourself at home. A large breakfast has been prepared for those who are hungry.”
As Validar eyes the large Grand Hall, he catches sight of a familiar armored form. It’s Blod from his days in the Seekers!
“Sir Clang!”, Blod calls out as he approaches for a hearty handshake.
“I’ve found another to join our quest besides Blod,” Lord Sharadin explains. “May I introduce, Serena, she is an Inquisitor in the service of Mystra.”
Lord Sharadin indicates an attractive brown-haired woman in the blue robes with white trim. A silver circlet rests on her head. The woman nods when introduced.
Squire conversation: "We cannot count on that all the time," Sir Alon answers.
"The problem I forsee will be to myself to the Order Hall regularly. Can we do the interviews in Pyris or at Fort Fletcher? It seems there is much happening that will endeavor to keep me from Alexandria any time soon."
"If it is a problem, then we can interview them individually. We should summon the main few candidates to Pyris at their earliest convenience."
"As for the question about rapid transit, I definitely believe that we cannot solely rely upon Lord Sharadin or Lady Sallivarian for such abilities. Which is why my question was voiced. What is our alternatives? Short of hiring a high level mage, it seems that rapid transit is an important ability."
----------------------------------------------------------------
Gabriella: "Very good.
Validar listens for a moment. Then he decides that it is certainly not appropriate to be defensive in this matter. Gabriella is much more learned and skilled in the subject of political negotiations. That much is certain. "You may be correct. I am more used to negotiating from behind the point of a sword. While there are valid uses for force in negotiations, there is certainly more to learn than simple posturing and threats, even from a position of power. I would like to think that I have some negotiating abililty, but I am always willing to learn from my superior."
Then he says with a smile. "I may require quite a substantial amount of private tutoring however."
"It is good to know that you will be here this day and the next morning.
"As it is to me as well, my love."
"Waiting at Karn's Keep is a good idea. With luck we will have an opportunity to meet with Sir Corley and the Guardians at Fort Fletcher before the trip back to Pyris."
"It is my understanding that Karn's Keep will be the place you all return to from your mission. So that is the place I wish to be."
"A very logical decision. We will also be returning to Pyris eventually, but I will be pleased to see you as soon as possible once this mission is completed."

Validar listens quietly and respectfully as his father speaks about his ideas regarding the new Duchy and his role in it.
"The simple truth of the matter is we cannot rule Elcadan from Pyris. I have been charged to rule this entire area in the King's Name. Should I sit here in the comfortable confines of Castle Pyris and let others rule there in my stead? That is the perception I must change. That cannot be changed from Pyris."
"I understand the situation, milord. Indeed, my thoughts on this matter are certainly more of the martial variety. I had always expected to NEED to conquer Elcadan to remove her evil influence. This is a situation I had not entirely prepared for."
"I am prepared to assist you as you require. Despite the needs of the King and the attack in Stone Ridge, I will manage to make certain we have no militarial problems in Elcadan."
Validar listens to the words, then plays them about in his head once more. He is silent for a long time as he realizes the scope of what has been said. "Thank you most kindly for your confidence and your decision. I shall endeavor to do all that I can to uplift your position as Duke, as well as to continue with the wondrous rule that you have started as Baron of our beloved homeland of Pyris."
"The King has duties for me, as well as my word and my honor to reclaim Stone Ridge. It is a difficult situation to be sure, but I am always one for challenges. The senechal will be able to perform the duties of Castle Pyris as normal and I may have to institute some respected members of the staff into positions to deal with basic tasks. I think our people will rise up and respond to the needs placed upon here, both militarilally and civil."
"It is my belief that we will not be dealing with an united front. While it is true that the Merchant Council currently rules Elcadan, they are not an united force. There is bickering and disagreements among their ranks. The most powerful on the council are the ones with the true power. For every merchant in high standing in Elcadan, there are several others who would eagerly take their place. I would much rather deal with several small factions than one united force."
"If such is the case, then it will make our task more easy, although perhaps more messy. There is little chance for a sweeping victory in a combat such as this. In truth it may amount to little more than garbage collection, of a sort. In any case, we will be ready to complete our duties."
We vigorously defend our borders as needed, but to simply attack them out of hand only works to undermine our efforts."
"I will certainly make myself available. While I do not know the situation in Fort Fletcher currently, it was secure when I left. The dwarves whom we are tasked to assist in planning their atatck to recover Hammerfall have only just recently begun the means to travel from Fletcher to the underground city. There will be some time before they are ready to make their assault and require more assistance. Only then will we be ready to attack Ardelphia."
"I have plans to create a sufficient staff to handle all that will be required of my duties. And be certain that the situation in our own lands is certainly more important than that of elsewhere, if a choice is to be made."
"My biggest concern in this tactic is that there may be some wise, yet opposing, leaders and merchants who pretend to play along but act as a snake in the grass and incite problems later when the smoke has cleared and everyone's guard is down."
"There is law that we are able to make ourselves, that would serve our purpose and not contradict the King's Law. However, if this is how you wish to proceed, then I will abide by that decision. I do not recommend allowing the pit vipers a chance to consolidate their strength, but I am not as diplomatic as you, father."
After the meeting, Validar meets with the military force in Pyris. Recruitment will be increased and arriving caravans heavily inspected. Those he meets will promise their understanding and their full cooperation.
Satisfied that the military strategy is well underway, Validar will move on to the next of his pursuits and meetings.
Private Meeting with the Duke: "I have already begun the process for enlarging the army and employing mercenary troops as well.
"I do not forsee troubles in Ansimont either. We have not had direct dealings with them for some time and contact with Baron Wilhelm and his wife ended about 5 years ago as I understand it. So there may be some unexpected situations that arise, but our relations with them, while distant, have not been argumentative nor aggressive."
"We have some trade with them, so that will help our cause. Perhaps we can contract a portion of our army's supplies from them. It would create a second supply line, create a bargaining chip and a connection with them to strengthen an alliance, and shorten the time it takes to feed our troops."
"I suppose we will have to see what the situation is there when we arrive. If the Baron has been eliminated or killed without replacement, we should consider a new leader there as soon as possible, especially someone with a merchant background. That will make the place more prosperous as well. And certainly, if their main concern is farming, then increasing their yields and their income can only be a desirable thing in their eyes."
Validar will make some inquiries into who has been their recent contact in terms of trade negotiations, if anyone from outside the Trade Guilds at all.
----------------------------------------------------------
The Herald Dellant:
Validar spells out his desires and plans for the new herald. He assigns Dellant several generic tasks and a few specific ones as well.
"Very good. Our barony is going to play a large role in the restructuring of this part of the Kingdom. You have found yourself in a fortuitous situation, my new herald. There are many more opportunities that will present themselves as well, but I think your father, Sir Corwin, would be proud for his son to rise from Castle Guard to Herald of the Baron of Pyris so quickly."
"That is all for now. You have your tasks. I will be leaving tomorrow and return in a few days hence. Until then..." Validar will return the young man's salute. As soon as he walks away, Validar is off to the next meeting in this very busy day.
Lady Vera Ardel:
Validar makes his offer known to bring the soon-to-be-recovered Barony of Stone Ridge under the control of the new Duke of Pyris and Elcadan, his father.
"You have more political power than you may realize. Certainly Ardelphia is not liberated, nor is much of Stone Ridge at all. As such, you do not have your lands currently, but the title is yours. The King has confirmed it as such. The proper ruler is in your line."
"Therefore, you have the power that goes with the title. The circumstances are merely a formality at this stage. Stone Ridge will be reborn and you will be the Baroness. Finally, there is no need to make these claims until the time is right. While you may mention it to the King now, the Duke of Corunglain is certainly not available as we go to rescue him tomorrow. As I said, it is a situation in the best interest of all, so I see no reason why it cannot be established as such."
"It is not a well-known development as yet, but with my father named the new Duke of the area, he has bestowed the rank of Baron of Pyris upon his son. As such, I have a bit more political power now as well to help assist this situation."
"As for the question of contiguous borders, that is really not an issue. While it is not prevalent at the moment in our Kingdom, there is nothing that dictates that all the baronies and lands that make up a Duchy be connected by borders. Further, with the new Duchy defined, while existing lands from Corunglian separate Stone Ridge from Elcadan and Ansimont, there are open territories, specifically the lands of Akorros, which have fallen. I have plans to liberate those areas next, which would unite the area of Stone Ridge and the rest of the Duchy contiguously as well. Not to mention the fact that control of Fort Lakeside will only help to solidify the strength of this region. One day, even old Elcadan will belong to us."
"Everything is underway. And while there is much yet to accomplish, the wheels of change have begun to roll. Once we return from the rescue of the Duke of Corunglain we will be taking the next of those steps in making Western Cynalon a great part of the Kingdom."
Gabriella that night: Validar finds himself a place to sit and motions the lovely Gabriella to join him.
Validar listens to his lady speak about her dreams. "It is an ideal situation, to be sure, my lady. Unfortunately, we do not have such a land at this moment. Hopefully though, we can strive to create such a place. Together we can work to stabilize this part of the Kingdom directly and also to assist the King in his work to bring Cynalon to greatness. While there are many enemies in our lands, the fight is now being taken to them. One day, we will have this land that you desire. That is a promise to you."
"While we have this time to talk about future plans, I would also know: what are your desires for our wedding? What location and what sort of ceremony? Every little girl dreams of her wedding day and plans it far in advance. What are your wishes for this magical day?"

Karn’s Keep:
The next morning goodbyes are said to those in Pyris and everyone gets in the Stone House once more. Lady Sallavarian teleports everyone to Karn’s Keep. The Stone House opens again and you’re in the keep's Grand Hall.
Baron Validar steps out of the Stone House, escorting Lady Gabriella as he does so, and into the massive vault that is the Grand Hall of Karn's Keep. Validar had heard of the unique structure liberated recently by the Company of the Sword, one of Lady Argent's old groups. Validar notes that a Mage Guild has been established here. Perhaps there will be the means of finding some information on speedier travel while here.
Lord Sharadin and his daughters are there to greet everyone along with many of the keep’s guards.
“Welcome to Karn’s Keep, Your Majesty. Please, make yourself at home. A large breakfast has been prepared for those who are hungry.”
"Lord Sharadin, very good to see you again. Karn's Keep is more impressive in person than in the tales told about it." He then nods in the direction of Sharadin's twin daughters. "Ladies."
As Validar eyes the large Grand Hall, he catches sight of a familiar armored form. It’s Blod from his days in the Seekers!
“Sir Clang!”, Blod calls out as he approaches for a hearty handshake.
"Greetings, friend Blod. It is great to see you again. How is your family?" Validar returns the large warrior's handshake. "You may remember the Lady Gabriella Allonica," he says indicating his beautiful companion.
"Very pleased to meet you, Serena. I am Validar, Baron of Pyris. Welcome to the mission. If I may ask, what exactly is an Inquisitor? And what will your role in our group be?"
"Very pleased to meet you, Serena. I am Validar, Baron of Pyris. Welcome to the mission. If I may ask, what exactly is an Inquisitor? And what will your role in our group be?"
“Well met, Baron Validar,” Serena responds easily. “I am a holy warrior in the service of the Lady of Mysteries. It is my task to travel the land and put down those who use the Ladies gifts in evil and perverse manners. These Hextorites most definitely qualify."
"I have a measure of spell casting ability and am able to counter malign spell effects. I would suspect that my role would primarily be support and spell casting in this endeavor. The number of warriors gathered here is impressive, but I can hold my own in a battle should it come to that.”
For the most part Serena will remain quiet and listen to the plan of attack paying particular attention to her role in this mission.
Baron Validar wrote:"The problem I foresee will be to myself to the Order Hall regularly. Can we do the interviews in Pyris or at Fort Fletcher? It seems there is much happening that will endeavor to keep me from Alexandria any time soon."
“The problem is that each of these candidates will have to travel on their own to reach any place we designate,” Sir Alon states. “To reach Fort Fletcher overland at this time of year is not even an option. I suppose we could summon them to Pyris. I suggested the Order Hall as many of them are already in the Inner Kingdom and it would be closer for them.”
Baron Validar wrote:"If it is a problem, then we can interview them individually. We should summon the main few candidates to Pyris at their earliest convenience."
“If that is your wish. This will situation will not be solved quickly. I have no idea when I’ll even be able to travel to the Order Hall to make arrangements. Factoring in getting word to the potentials and then having them travel, it could take months.”
Baron Validar wrote:"As for the question about rapid transit, I definitely believe that we cannot solely rely upon Lord Sharadin or Lady Sallivarian for such abilities. Which is why my question was voiced. What is our alternatives? Short of hiring a high level mage, it seems that rapid transit is an important ability."
“We do what our ancestors have always done. Ride on horseback from city to city. I for one, wouldn’t trust any mage I didn’t know to get us to our proper destination.”
Lady Vera Ardel:
Lady Vera listens closely as Baron Validar explains the newest developments.
“Then it seems that congratulations are in order, Baron Validar. I am sure that your father will make an outstanding Duke. May you both rule wisely. I will keep our conversation in mind, Baron. If these things do come to pass, then perhaps we can reach an agreement. Until that day, then.”
Lady Gabriella:
Baron Validar wrote:"While we have this time to talk about future plans, I would also know: what are your desires for our wedding? What location and what sort of ceremony? Every little girl dreams of her wedding day and plans it far in advance. What are your wishes for this magical day?"
“Indeed, I have,” Lady Allonica says with a dreamy smile. “Alas, the realties of the situation will dictate the answers. Since you are now the Baron of Pyris, tradition demands that the wedding be here in your house among your people. I would wish for it to be warm day, perhaps late in the spring when the flower are in bloom. I would wish for as many of my family to be present as well. It seems I have much planning to do!”
Baron Validar wrote:"Lord Sharadin, very good to see you again. Karn's Keep is more impressive in person than in the tales told about it." He then nods in the direction of Sharadin's twin daughters. "Ladies."
“Welcome, Baron Validar. Congratulations on your new title.” The twins will curtsey politely.
Baron Validar wrote:"Greetings, friend Blod. It is great to see you again. How is your family?" Validar returns the large warrior's handshake. "You may remember the Lady Gabriella Allonica," he says indicating his beautiful companion.
Blod looks upon you with a goofy grin on his face. You had forgotten just how tall and muscular the warrior was. He’s easily 7’ tall and at least 300 pounds in girth. His hair and eyes are black.
“Hello, lady! Good to see you again! Zynie is happy! She enjoys staying here. Ross is healthy and happy. You come see them later?”
Later in the morning, Silvarn arrives at Karn’s Keep. She relates her findings to the King and his court.
“It seems that the concerns about the Cold Maiden were well founded. I located a palace constructed of what appeared to be ice high up in the mountains to the northeast of Fort Fletcher. It appears that the Priestess of Cold got to your invading orcs first, and turned them into something akin to ‘ice zombies’.”
“This force attacked Fort Fletcher yesterday afternoon, but was easily repulsed. Later on a second attack came, this time composed of icy gargoyles and ice warriors. The fort's defenses held and the attack came to an end when Argent forced the priestess directing the attack to retreat.”
“After my report to them, the Guardians decide to take the battle to the enemy. I took them to the Ice Palace after explaining to them that I could not stay with them and would be away for a day at most. They still went to engage the Cold Maiden’s fortress. I will return for them as soon as I am able.”
Talk turns to the final plans for the assault on the Hextor Temple. Sir Alon breaks the attacking force down into three groups. One group will simply be Crysania and her associates. The next group will be commanded by Dame Sharl and will be composed of Lady Teris, Lady Salavarian, Lord Antonic, Lord Vorloi, Silvarn, and the King himself. The last group will be led by Sir Alon, and include Sir Acerion, Baron Validar, Blod, Serena, and Lord Sharadin.
Silvarn indicates that she can get you inside the front door of the temple. From there you’ll have to fight your way down to the lower levels to rescue the prisoners.
You have until later afternoon to make your final preparations for the attack. A hearty meal will be served beforehand.
Squires: "The problem I foresee will be to myself to the Order Hall regularly.
"Why, Sir Alon, you are getting softer in your old age," Validar says with a hearty laugh. "I recall it was you who said that 'the role of a squire is an honor not a priviledge'. Surely, as they are going to be staying on with us, travelling to our location should not be an undo hardship. In truth, I am not certain that I can spare the time to travel to Alexandria. And I would prefer to bring on a squire sooner rather than later."
"You may be correct about Fort Fletcher. The weather seems particularly unsettled this year. While we believe that to be the cause of the Cold Maiden's direct influence in the area, it is still an issue to overcome."
"Perhaps you are correct in the compromise to have them arrive at Castle Pyris. We should proceed in that manner."
“If that is your wish. This will situation will not be solved quickly. I have no idea when I’ll even be able to travel to the Order Hall to make arrangements. Factoring in getting word to the potentials and then having them travel, it could take months.”
"That is unfortunate. I was not aware there were special arrangements that needed to be made. If it will take time, then so be it."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"As for the question about rapid transit, I definitely believe that we cannot solely rely upon Lord Sharadin or Lady Sallivarian for such abilities. Which is why my question was voiced. What is our alternatives? Short of hiring a high level mage, it seems that rapid transit is an important ability."
“We do what our ancestors have always done. Ride on horseback from city to city. I for one, wouldn’t trust any mage I didn’t know to get us to our proper destination.”
"You may be correct in that," Validar will say. He doesn't add more, although he thinks to himself that Sir Alon may be a bit short-sighted in this matter. Certainly there are flying mounts as an option, although powerful flyers are expensive to maintain and a group would need a whole squadron of them. What they truly need is an item like the Stone House, perhaps smaller, that has its own teleport abilities. Or perhaps a flying transport for multiple people. Something to think about further, Validar says to himself and files away the thought for now.

Lady Vera Ardel: Lady Vera listens closely as Baron Validar explains the newest developments.
“Then it seems that congratulations are in order, Baron Validar. I am sure that your father will make an outstanding Duke. May you both rule wisely. I will keep our conversation in mind, Baron. If these things do come to pass, then perhaps we can reach an agreement. Until that day, then.”
"Thank you, milady. The situation will do much to solidify the region, most certainly. Please continue to enjoy your time here, as our guest at Castle Pyris. I will return from the attack on the Hextorites in a few days and then we will continue with our plans for Elcadan and Stone Ridge."
--------------------------------------------------------
Lady Gabriella: "While we have this time to talk about future plans, I would also know: what are your desires for our wedding? What location and what sort of ceremony? Every little girl dreams of her wedding day and plans it far in advance. What are your wishes for this magical day?"
“Indeed, I have,” Lady Allonica says with a dreamy smile. “Alas, the realties of the situation will dictate the answers. I would wish for it to be warm day, perhaps late in the spring when the flower are in bloom. I would wish for as many of my family to be present as well. It seems I have much planning to do!”
"You are correct, my love. As the Baron of Pyris, the people of the land would wish for our ceremony to be here. And I do not think it fair to my people to deny them the reason for celebration."
"As for the rest, I am certain my mother will have some wishes to include in the plans for the day, but I would otherwise say to indulge yourself. I am open to your choices and your whims. I am sure there will be plenty of time to announce the celebration to your family. Spring is far away, it seems."
Karn's Keep: "Lord Sharadin, very good to see you again. Karn's Keep is more impressive in person than in the tales told about it." He then nods in the direction of Sharadin's twin daughters. "Ladies."
“Welcome, Baron Validar. Congratulations on your new title.” The twins will curtsey politely.
"Thank you kindly, both for your hospitality and your congratulations. I consider it quite an honor to follow in my father's footsteps."
---------------------------------------------------------
"Greetings, friend Blod. It is great to see you again. How is your family?" Validar returns the large warrior's handshake. "You may remember the Lady Gabriella Allonica," he says indicating his beautiful companion.
"I am pleased to hear that your family is well. We shall not keep you away from them for long. And certainly we would love to visit with Zynara and Ross. We can always find some time for friends."
"The have summoned us all to breakfast, perhaps Zynara could meet us there?"
----------------------------------------------------------------
Later in the morning, Silvarn arrives at Karn’s Keep. She relates her findings to the King and his court.
“It seems that the concerns about the Cold Maiden were well founded. I located a palace constructed of what appeared to be ice high up in the mountains to the northeast of Fort Fletcher. “This force attacked Fort Fletcher yesterday afternoon, but was easily repulsed. Later on a second attack came, this time composed of icy gargoyles and ice warriors. The fort's defenses held and the attack came to an end when Argent forced the priestess directing the attack to retreat.”
Validar will certainly be present for the report by Silvarn. He listens intently to the information presented by the elf/dragon.
"It seems that we have traded one enemy for another more dangerous one. It was a concern that we suspected. The Guardians are a powerful force and I am not surprised that the enemy was unable to penetrate the defenses. However, it is a definite sign that we need more troops committed to holding such a place to be certain that it can remain defensible."
"My King, the Guardians will certainly not be able to remain there indeterminably with all the other tasks and needs that the Kingdom has. We will need to have more troops and a commanding officer assigned to Fort Fletcher as soon as possible.
“After my report to them, the Guardians decided to take the battle to the enemy. I took them to the Ice Palace after explaining to them that I could not stay with them and would be away for a day at most. They still went to engage the Cold Maiden’s fortress. I will return for them as soon as I am able.”
"I do admire their courage. I am sure I would have made a similar decision given the circumstances. Hopefully she will not be prepared with proper defenses. With luck, courage and skill at arms and magic, we will have two successful invasions this day."
------------------------------------------------------------
Talk turns to the final plans for the assault on the Hextor Temple.
Validar agrees to the breakdown of the assault forces. Their own group has sufficient magickal ability to deal with whatever may come and keeping Crysania's group together only makes sense from a tactical sense.
"Just to make sure that it is understood, each group has basically the same tactic? We are all trying to battle our way down to the lowest levels of the temple as quickly as possible? It is a viable strategy. My only concern is that each group gets mired down in the defenses and combats and all are slowed to a halt. If that were to happen we could fail in the attack. I do not see that happening, but it is something to plan for."
"Once we split up, it is nearly impossible to affect a contingency plan that allows each group to cover the others or support them, so we will each be on our own until we are able to physically meet up again. The plan as presented is certainly more risky than other possibilities, but it does give us three opportunites to succeed. However, it has not been mentioned, who will be holding the Stone House? Further, what happens if the group with the Stone House is stalled, delayed or sonehow defeated in this battle?"
"If you are comfortable with this plan, then we shall all endeavor to make it succeed. We have many of the greatest warriors in the realm engaging in this attack. In truth, this is the future of Cynalon. May we strike a powerful, telling blow against our Hextorite enemies and slay them all like the soulless slugs they are!"
Validar will meet with people here, spend some time with Blod and Zynara and also tour some of the castle if there is time. He will eat well, if not overly so, when food is presented, and prepare his arms and armor for the coming conflict.
The next morning goodbyes are said to those in Pyris and everyone gets in the Stone House once more. Lady Sallavarian teleports everyone to Karn’s Keep. The Stone House opens again and you’re in the keep's Grand Hall.
"I hear congratulations are in order, Baron," Acerion says as he approaches Validar in the few moments we are within the Stone House. Clasping wrists and resting his other hand on his friend's shoulder, Acerion smiles as he reflects on all the changes they have undergone in such a short amount of time.
"You know I will find it quite hard to keep pace with you when it comes to acquiring titles," Acerion says lightheartedly. "In seriousness though, I feel this was a good decision, not just for you and Pyris, but for the Kingdom."
Arriving in Karn's Keep, Acerion is openly impressed. As he looks around, Lord Sharadin is there along with several others. "Lord Sharadin, it is good to see you once again," Acerion says. He will also bow and smile a greeting to the twins.
It seems one of Validar's old companions is here as well. Assuming he is introduced, Acerion will clasp wrists with Blod, impressed with the man's size and build.
Acerion will also approach Serena and bow his head to her when the moment is right. "A pleasure to meet you, Serena," Acerion says. "I am Sir Acerion, a paladin of Heironeous. It shall be good to have another with such skill and devotion with us on this task."
Acerion joins the others when Silvarn arrives, eager to hear the news. It seemed they were indeed attacked, twice, but it sounds like the defense was successful with Argent scoring a major victory. So the orcish army is no more, but a priestess of the Cold Maiden is their new foe.
Hearing that the Guardians went to assault this Ice Palace makes Acerion grow concerned about his dearest Ivy. Still, they are a formidable force and Sir Corley will lead them to victory.
Acerion listens to Validar's urging that more troops be stationed at the Fort to free up the Guardians. The paladin agrees that these heroes not be resigned to guard duty for an indefinite amount of time. Hopefully the suggestion will be acceptable to all involved.
Next talk turns to the plans to attack the Hextor Temple. Acerion listens closely, learning that he will be in the group with Validar. The paladin knows what to expect from his friend and is glad they will be fighting together. He is also looking forward to fighting beside Lord Sharadin.
Acerion has nothing to add, taking note of Validar's questions. It will be important to know who has the Stone House. He is figuring it will be Silvarn since the King is in that group and he would be the most important to get clear should anything go wrong. Of course, if it came to that, Silvarn could probably just teleport away with him. Regardless, the knowledge will be important to have, especially for the group that has the item in its possession.
Acerion will eat heartily when the meal is served and spend the time in light conversation with the others. He will also see as much of the keep as time allows for. As the time draws near, he will ready himself, offering more prayer and meditation in preperation for the upcoming challenge.
On the way to Karn's Keep: The next morning goodbyes are said to those in Pyris and everyone gets in the Stone House once more.
"Thank you, my friend. Thank you indeed," Validar replies as he returns the firm grip. "It was an unexpected honor to be certain. Ironically, my life was dedicated to becoming a Knight of Cynalon and while I am still that, it seems to have been eclipsed in a matter of days."
"You know I will find it quite hard to keep pace with you when it comes to acquiring titles," Acerion says lightheartedly. "In seriousness though, I feel this was a good decision, not just for you and Pyris, but for the Kingdom."
Validar lets out a brief chuckle at Acerion's jest. "If you are interested in acquiring a Barony for yourself, I am certain that I can recommend you to the new Duke and put in a fine testimonial for you." Validar smiles broadly as he says this. Then in a tone of mock seriousness, he adds. "In truth, I am simply trying to raise my status sufficiently enough to convince the lovely Lady Allonica to accept me as her husband. Surely she could have any man in the Kingdom."
"But in all seriousness," Validar leans in closely to speak and lowers his voice, as the words he is about to share are known currently to precious few, "I am also following through with plans to include Stone Ridge in the New Duchy of my father. And more lands besides: Akorros and even old Elcadan herself."
Stepping back, Validar will continue, "I appreciate your compliment. Certainly it is a good development for me and I would hope it is a good development for Pyris. Certainly I have our lands best interests at heart. As for the Kingdom as a whole, I am afraid that there will be some who do not agree with you, and not just in Elcadan. But the Kingdom is undergoing change and I am very glad to be a part of it."
Validar will be certain to introduce Sir Acerion as well to his former comrade in the Seekers. "And this, my friend, is a knight as well. His name is Sir Acerion. Acerion, this is Blod. He and his wife, Zynara, have adventured with me in the Seekers in the recent past. We have acheived much glory together. Blod will be a fine addition to our fighting force. Apparently, they are living here in Karn's Keep now, raising their young son, Ross."
Meeting with Serena: "Very pleased to meet you, Serena.
"Welcome to the group, Serena. A holy warrior? Certainly your skills will come in handy to our mission. I was not aware that there was such a movement as these Inquisitors of which you belong. Although certainly, the defeat of those evil mages you hunt would be a goal of mine as well."
"We have a holy warrior in the Guardians as well. Allow me to introduce my friend and companion, Sir Acerion Kalindor." Seeing Acerion step up to listen in on the conversation, Baron Validar will gesture toward his friend as he speaks.
Acerion will also approach Serena and bow his head to her when the moment is right. "A pleasure to meet you, Serena," Acerion says. "I am Sir Acerion, a Paladin of Heironeous. It shall be good to have another with such skill and devotion with us on this task."
"Sir Acerion has been honored by his patron Heironeous. He carries a Holy Weapon as well as his armor currently being the embodiment of the artifact, the Shield of Justice. The slugs of Hextor will surely cringe when Sir Acerion is in their midst."
Baron Validar wrote:"Welcome to the group, Serena. A holy warrior? Certainly your skills will come in handy to our mission. I was not aware that there was such a movement as these Inquisitors of which you belong. Although certainly, the defeat of those evil mages you hunt would be a goal of mine as well."
“Those like myself are not common in this region,” Serena explains. “Nor is our existence well known. After all, the Lady of Mysteries seldom reveals all of her works to the world.”
Baron Validar wrote:"We have a holy warrior in the Guardians as well. Allow me to introduce my friend and companion, Sir Acerion Kalindor." Seeing Acerion step up to listen in on the conversation, Baron Validar will gesture toward his friend as he speaks.
“I would like that very much,” Serena agrees.
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion will also approach Serena and bow his head to her when the moment is right. "A pleasure to meet you, Serena," Acerion says. "I am Sir Acerion, a Paladin of Heironeous. It shall be good to have another with such skill and devotion with us on this task."
“Well met, Sir Acerion. I have heard of you from Lord Sharadin. I am told that you are a powerful force for Heironeous. I welcome your presence on this most urgent mission.”
Baron Validar wrote:"Sir Acerion has been honored by his patron Heironeous. He carries a Holy Weapon as well as his armor currently being the embodiment of the artifact, the Shield of Justice. The slugs of Hextor will surely cringe when Sir Acerion is in their midst."
“Slugs?” Serena repeats. “As good a name for them as any other, I suppose. I can sense the potency of Sir Acerion’s weapon and armor from here. They are steeped in powerful and ancient magicks. May they be pivotal in the battles to come.”
Once the meeting is over with, Serena will spend time in the Shrine to Mystra here in Karn’s Keep. She’ll meditate and pray for victory over these foes. Before we depart, Serena will cast Cat’s Grace and Strength upon herself. Shield will be cast as well and her Stoneskin was renewed the day before.
Serena is a quiet, but charismatic woman deeply devoted to her goddess. She stands 5’6” and weights almost 120 lbs. Her robes are the traditional blue and white of the Mystran faith. The only weapon you can see is her staff. It is oak, with splashes of red and orange through it. If you study the staff long enough, the orange and red might remind you of flames.
"Why, Sir Alon, you are getting softer in your old age," Validar says with a hearty laugh. "I recall it was you who said that 'the role of a squire is an honor not a privilege'. Surely, as they are going to be staying on with us, traveling to our location should not be an undo hardship. In truth, I am not certain that I can spare the time to travel to Alexandria. And I would prefer to bring on a squire sooner rather than later."
"Perhaps you are correct in the compromise to have them arrive at Castle Pyris. We should proceed in that manner."
“There was a time when that was true,” Sir Alon will say sadly. “In recent years joining the Order was a more of a political move than a patriotic one. Many of these potentials come from powerful families with much influence. But with the new King there is hope that the ranks of the Order will be filled once more with true Knights.”
“But you are right, my friend. A little hardship can only make them stronger. I’ll send one of my squires to the Order Hall with a message telling the potentials to report to Castle Pyris. Perhaps a long overland journey will weed out those who seek only prestige and not the honor of serving the Crown. It might make your selections a bit easier.”
Blod:
Baron Validar wrote:"I am pleased to hear that your family is well. We shall not keep you away from them for long. And certainly we would love to visit with Zynara and Ross. We can always find some time for friends."
"The have summoned us all to breakfast, perhaps Zynara could meet us there?"
“I’ll see if I can drag her away from her books!” Blod promises with a toothy grin.
We have achieved much glory together. Blod will be a fine addition to our fighting force. Apparently, they are living here in Karn's Keep now, raising their young son, Ross."
“Any friend of Sir Clang is friend of mine!” Blod declares and will give Sir Acerion a hardy handshake. The man’s strength is incredible for someone without magical enhancement.
Later on Zynara will appear. She’s very tall for a woman, nearly six feet, with knee length blond hair. What is most surprising is the ten-foot long python that is draped about her shoulders. The snake is Sheba, Zynara’s familiar. Also with her is Ross, the couple’s infant son. He appears to be less than a year old.
Zynara comes across as quietly intelligent and with Blod will bring Validar up to date on the Seeker’s exploits. (Which would cover up to The Frontier #139).
“The magical pool that the Couatl showed us increased my intelligence,” Zynara explains. “Since then I’ve stayed here to raise Ross and further the study of my craft. Blod decided to stay with us when the other Seekers moved on.”
“He doesn’t like ocean travel,” Zynara adds in a whisper.
Later that afternoon, Silvarn arrives and reports the latest news from Fort Fletcher. She deposited the Guardians at Auril’s Ice Palace on her way back.
Baron Validar wrote:"My King, the Guardians will certainly not be able to remain there indeterminably with all the other tasks and needs that the Kingdom has. We will need to have more troops and a commanding officer assigned to Fort Fletcher as soon as possible.
“I agree,” the King states. “The situation with Elcadan changes everything. Our primary goal must be re-stabilizing the Western Kingdom. It would be a waste of resources to have them remain at Fort Fletcher if the enemy has been neutralized there. Sadly, Ardelphia will have to wait a little bit longer to be reclaimed. We must shore up our existing holdings before retaking those lost to us. I’ll trust your judgment Baron Validar on how to best make use of your adventuring band’s talents.”
Battle plans:
Baron Validar wrote:"Just to make sure that it is understood, each group has basically the same tactic? We are all trying to battle our way down to the lowest levels of the temple as quickly as possible? It is a viable strategy. In truth, this is the future of Cynalon. May we strike a powerful, telling blow against our Hextorite enemies and slay them all like the soulless slugs they are!"
“That is the basic tactic,” Sir Alon nods. “We cannot plan too far in detail given what we are about to encounter is unknown. Each group has its own mage, or multiple mages among them. Each mage will have teleport spells at the ready if the need to withdraw comes. Even the need to split up into smaller groups is not known. They are simply in place should that contingency arrive. We do not want to get bogged down on these minute details during the raid.”
“Lady Jallarzi will be carrying the Stone House.”
“I now know what it must have been like for our ancestors,” the King announces as the meeting winds down. “The anticipating when our forefathers were preparing to launch their final raid against Keln. May we all live up to that lofty standard.”
All the preparations are complete and your goodbyes are said to those staying behind. Everyone enters the Stone House and the door is shut. You can imagine Silvarn picking up the Stone House and then exiting the Keep. She then transforms back into her true Silver Dragon form. Holding the Stone House in her claw, Silvarn flies off. Her draconian magic is invoked once more and faster than normal travel occurs.
The door to the Stone House opens once more. As you exit, you realize that you’re in a large gladiatorial arena. The arena is currently empty and the floor of the arena has been stained with blood from innumerable beings. You’re standing on a landing area higher up in the arena. Stairs lead down to the arena floor and behind you stairs lead up to a pair of large, iron-reinforced doors.
“This is the temple entrance,’ Silvarn reports.
The area’s intense evil is disturbing to the followers of Heironeous. It’s like a dull throb that won’t go away.
The large doors are thrown open and the group advances. Immediately behind the doors is a large cathedral to Hextor that is currently empty. At the far end of the cathedral is an onyx altar heavily stained with blood. Scattered above the chamber are numerous alcoves. In each alcove is a strange, gargoyle like creature.
About thirty feet in, Silvarn suddenly comes to a stop. “We are not alone,” she hisses.
As if on cue, the gargoyle creatures begin to move! They unfold their leathery wings and a long tail twitches behind them. The creatures’ eyes open and they glow a hellish red. The monster’s take flight and begin to fly towards the invaders their claws ready to rend flesh!
“Abishai!” Dame Sharl calls out. “Infernal servants to the Herald of Hell!”
GM Notes:
Herald of Hell is another name for Hextor. Abishai’s are a type of devil. There are two dozen black Abishai and they stand 8’ tall. There are about ten green Abishai and they are 7’ tall. There is one lone Red Abishai and he is 6’ tall.
"Thank you, my friend. Thank you indeed," Validar replies as he returns the firm grip. "It was an unexpected honor to be certain. Ironically, my life was dedicated to becoming a Knight of Cynalon and while I am still that, it seems to have been eclipsed in a matter of days."
"Such dedication has been seen in the eyes of many, it would seem," Acerion replies. "I am no seer, but I suspect you have not reached the pinnacle of your achievements by far."
"There will be a time for me to consider all of that, but for now the open road is still my path," Acerion admits. "There is much I need to learn still before I could believe myself ready to be a capable ruler. Meetings like the ones we attended earlier are good learning situations for me. I'm sure I could get all the political insider information from my grandmother, but she can be a bit biased," Acerion says the last with a slight chuckle.
"As far as the Lady Allonica, I am sure she sees there is more to you than titles," Acerion comments. "Raising your status may prove to be a better detriment to any would-be competitors for her hand."
"But in all seriousness," Validar leans in closely to speak and lowers his voice, as the words he is about to share are known currently to precious few, "I am also following through with plans to include Stone Ridge in the New Duchy of my father. And more lands besides: Akorros and even old Elcadan herself."
Acerion raises an inquisitive eyebrow at this imparting of a semi-secret. "I see," the paladin says as he takes this in. He refrains from further comment simply because it is not the best place for such a conversation.
"Maybe it is the growing friendship between us that has clouded my judgement, but I highly doubt that to be so," Acerion responds. "I fear that there will always be someone who will not agree with me, you or any of the others. Some rightfully so, others not. Such is the way of men."
"The Kingdom is definitely undergoing change, and I am honored to be so directly involved," Acerion adds. "My original goals were more selfish in wishing to reclaim the lands of my family and my birth, but now I strive to have the whole Kingdom prosper and strengthened. It seems I am still growing and learning, which I will admit is not a bad thing. With a new, and very active, King, I expect to be kept very busy for the forseeable future."
------------------------------
Validar will be certain to introduce Sir Acerion as well to his former comrade in the Seekers. "And this, my friend, is a knight as well. His name is Sir Acerion. Acerion, this is Blod. He and his wife, Zynara, have adventured with me in the Seekers in the recent past.
"Well met Blod," Acerion replies as he marvels at the man's strength. He will turn to face Validar with a raised eyebrow and mouth "Sir Clang?" to his friend.
Acerion will bow his head upon meeting Zynara and smile at Ross. "A pleasure to meet both of you," he will say.
------------------------------
"Sir Acerion has been honored by his patron Heironeous. He carries a Holy Weapon as well as his armor currently being the embodiment of the artifact, the Shield of Justice. The slugs of Hextor will surely cringe when Sir Acerion is in their midst."
“Slugs?” Serena repeats. “As good a name for them as any other, I suppose. I can sense the potency of Sir Acerion’s weapon and armor from here. They are steeped in powerful and ancient magicks. May they be pivotal in the battles to come.”
"Agreed," Acerion adds. "Slugs is the only title they are worthy of receiving."
-------------------------------
“This is the temple entrance,’ Silvarn reports.
The area’s intense evil is disturbing to the followers of Heironeous. It’s like a dull throb that won’t go away.
The evil of the place assaults Acerion's very being. Even concentrating on the task at hand, he can not completely ignore the presence. "If only we had the time to properly raze this temple," Acerion mutters. "It is like a blood-filled tick on the land."
"Then we shall send them back where they will suffer for their failure!" Acerion calls out and will sound his magical horn. Then with his Holy Axe at the ready, he will face off against whichever of these Abishai that are foolish enough to close with him.
Serena: "Welcome to the group, Serena.
"That does explain why I have never heard mention of such a title before. I do make a point of trying to know about all the factions in the kingdom. I wish you luck on your mission. I would think there are no shortage of targets for you. As for the Lady of Mysteries, she is well-named."
“Slugs?” Serena repeats. “As good a name for them as any other, I suppose. I can sense the potency of Sir Acerion’s weapon and armor from here. They are steeped in powerful and ancient magicks. May they be pivotal in the battles to come.”
"That is all I see them as. A vile creature with no backbone that needs simply to be stepped on and eliminated. As for Sir Acerion, here, I am sure his presence will be pivotal in the battle to come."
---------------------------------------------------
Sir Alon & the Squires: "Why, Sir Alon, you are getting softer in your old age," Validar says with a hearty laugh.
"The Kingdom is undergoing change on all levels once more and all for the good. The Order is worthless as a political entity. There are enough of those already. We are warriors and heroes who are charged with protecting our realm and making it a better place for all, not simply for the influential."
"Thank you for that, Sir Alon. Certainly, if someone cannot even make the journey to Pyris, where they will be headquartered for some time, they will not be welcome as a squire. It is time to create more knights who will do honor to the Order."
------------------------------------------------------------
Blod & Zynara:
Blod is greeted by Baron Validar and introductions are made to Gabriella and Sir Acerion as well. Later they all meet up at the breakfast that has been prepared for them all.
"I understand," Validar says back quietly as well. "It seems that you are quite happy here, although I understand there is a Mage Guild in Elcadan as well. Now that my Father has been declared the new Duke and that I am concentrating my efforts in the Western part of the Kingdom, we would certainly offer you the opportunity to join the Guild there and live in our lands."
Castle Pyris: "Thank you, my friend.
"I may start believing my own hype, with continued words such as those, my friend," Validar responds. "But you are correct, I should think, unless I meet an untimely end, I do have much more that I wish to achieve. I aspire to making this Kingdom the greatest ever known."
"Fair enough my friend. It is a wise man who not only recognizes his own limitations, but is willing to strive to overcome them. I am certain your path will be strewn with honor and glory and much good accomplished. And I hope you will continue to ride with me long after Stone Ridge has been recovered."
"As far as the Lady Allonica, I am sure she sees there is more to you than titles," Acerion comments. "Raising your status may prove to be a better detriment to any would-be competitors for her hand."
"For some men, their titles define who they are and for some their titles are irrelevant to who they are. To me, I think an earned title is a testiment to who one is," Validar answers. "And hopefully there will be no need for deterence either by status or sword-point," Validar says with a wink.
But in all seriousness," Validar leans in closely to speak and lowers his voice, as the words he is about to share are known currently to precious few, "I am also following through with plans to include Stone Ridge in the New Duchy of my father. And more lands besides: Akorros and even old Elcadan herself."
Acerion raises an inquisitive eyebrow at this imparting of a semi-secret. "I see," the paladin says as he takes this in. He refrains from further comment simply because it is not the best place for such a conversation.
Validar nods his understanding of Acerion's lack of response. It is a subject for later conversation.
It seems I am still growing and learning, which I will admit is not a bad thing. With a new, and very active, King, I expect to be kept very busy for the forseeable future."
"You have already played a big part in the rebirth of the Kingdom, my friend. You are a member of the Royal Council of Lords. And I trust you are correct, to follow this King, it will take heroes and you are that."
Karn's Keep: “Any friend of Sir Clang is friend of mine!” Blod declares and will give Sir Acerion a hardy handshake. The man’s strength is incredible for someone without magical enhancement.
Validar cocks his head as if to say, 'who knows'. "Our friend Blod seemed to have some trouble with pronouncing Validar repeatedly and he did not wish to shorten it. In truth I had to ask several of the Seekers to refrain from calling me simply 'Val'. So in inimitable Blod-style, he christened me Sir Clang. It seems that even Blod could see I was destined for knighthood," Validar explains with a smile. "In fact, as difficult as this may be to believe, several of the Seekers seemed to think that I was a paladin myself. I know, hard to believe it to be so."
"My King, the Guardians will certainly not be able to remain there indeterminably with all the other tasks and needs that the Kingdom has. We will need to have more troops and a commanding officer assigned to Fort Fletcher as soon as possible.
Validar bows his head slightly at the King's assention to his own wisdom in the matters at hand. "It is no doubt important to hold Fort Fletcher as it keeps the area of Stone Ridge from being reinforced from wihtout the Kingdom. With a larger contingent of troops and a good commander, they should be able to hold until we are ready to begin our assault on Ardelphia. How soon can we expect troops to be committed to the Fort?"
"The Guardians will be needed in rooting out the demons in Elcadan, as well as some other enemies that will undoubtedly arise. When they are successful in their battle at the Ice Maiden's fortress, they will be recalled to Elcadan and Lady Sallavarian's estate. We will begin our movements to secure Elcadan immediately upon returning. You can count on Duke Relon and the rest of our allies to secure the Western Kingdom for you, Your Majesty. If all goes well, Ardelphia should not wait overly long. We will do our best to make progress in that direction whenever able."
----------------------------------------------------------
Battle Plans: “That is the basic tactic,” Sir Alon nods.
"Very well. As long as the mages are not incapacitated in some way, then each group is almost an independent entity in this attack, should we indeed need to split our forces. We will certainly all strive to strike the most telling blow possible to our enemies."
-------------------------------------------------------------
“I now know what it must have been like for our ancestors,” the King announces as the meeting winds down. “The anticipation when our forefathers were preparing to launch their final raid against Keln. May we all live up to that lofty standard.”
"And may we strike a lasting blow that the enemy will not ever hope to recover from. In the name of King Victor of Cynalon, we shall engage the enemy and destroy them!"
----------------------------------------------------------------
Validar says his goodbyes to those staying behind. He ends with his love, Lady Gabriella. Taking her hands in his, he looks into her eyes. "We will return victorious, with another victory in the King's name. I will see you as soon as the battle is won." He gives her a quick kiss and then places his helmet in place and readies his shield on his arm.
The trip is quick as usual, and the group begins to exit from the Stone Cube into the evil temple. Validar looks around at the gladitorial arena. Quickly the group advances on the temple's entrance. Validar's sword is in his hand and he slams down the visor to his great helm, ready for combat.
"Keep that thought in your mind, my friend. While we are here to rescue the captured Duke, we are also here to deliver the strongest blow possible. We should attempt to do as much damage as possible while here."
The group advances on an onyx altar, stained with blood. Validar feels as though he is being watched.
"Then we shall send them back where they will suffer for their failure!" Acerion calls out and will sound his magical horn. Then with his Holy Axe at the ready, he will face off against whichever of these Abishai that are foolish enough to close with him.
Validar will move into position to cover some of the more impetuous of the group, should they rush forward to attack. This would be a moment for an ambush from another direction and Validar will not allow them to fall into such a simple trap.
He prepares for battle, watching the sides as well as lending support to anyone who may get someone or something behind them. With his incredible speed, he should be able to cover a lot of distance to help someone should it be necessary.
Baron Validar wrote:"That does explain why I have never heard mention of such a title before. I do make a point of trying to know about all the factions in the kingdom. I wish you luck on your mission. I would think there are no shortage of targets for you. As for the Lady of Mysteries, she is well-named."
“Thank you,” Serena will simply respond. She is a woman of few words.
Baron Validar wrote:"That is all I see them as. A vile creature with no backbone that needs simply to be stepped on and eliminated. As for Sir Acerion, here, I am sure his presence will be pivotal in the battle to come."
"Agreed," Acerion adds. "Slugs is the only title they are worthy of receiving."
“Slugs they shall be then.”
“Abishai!” Dame Sharl calls out. “Infernal servants to the Herald of Hell!”
Clutching her staff tightly, Serena observes the evil creatures as they take flight. Using her Boots of the Fox, Serena will move away just enough to give herself a little room to fight. She’ll hold off on using spells and concentrate on using her staff to attack the devils.
