Elfquest #8
Powered by the Spell Engine found in the wreck, the barge is making excellent progress towards the Sylvan Realm. Flight is maintained around the clock during the trip. The Engineer, the one who controls the Spell Engine, is easily swapped as needed. Sherwood expends several spells per day to the keep the engine fully powered.
Lady Marianita’s diary is translated. It relates her mission to deliver a powerful magic item into the hands of an Alphatian Admiral during a period of civil war. The magical chest the item was secured in turned up in Twin Forks several weeks back. The key to the chest was found on the wreck. It is decided that Sherwood teleport back to retrieve the chest and return with the Star Crown.
Sherwood returns around an hour later thanks to his enchanted sword, Lifeshield. He carries with him the chest holding the Star Crown.
“It seems there has been even more excitement back home while we’ve been traveling,” Sherwood relates. “This will be of particular interest to Kylie. There’s been a significant shift in power in Elcadan. It seems that the Duke Maurice and his family had been killed decades ago and demons from the Deville family had been masquerading as them all this time. One of the demons appeared before the King, but his majesty was not fooled and drove her off. Much of the troubles in Elcadan have been demonic in origin.”
“The Duchy of Elcadan has been divided up. Some of it has been added to Athenos to the south, while much of the rest is now in the hands of Baron Relon of Pyris, Sir Validar’s father. He has been elevated to the status of Duke and is working to restore order in Elcadan.”
The key is tried in the chest and it opens! Inside are eight star sapphire gems. Each is about the size of an egg and is translucent blue in color. The center of each gem is a white starburst pattern, giving the gem its name. Each gem is worth thousands of gold piece. Together they make a sizable fortune!
Each gem seems independent of the other. Nothing visible binds them together. But when a mage touches one of the gems, all them fly up and begin to slowly circle around their head. They are high enough to not block the vision of the wearer. The Star Crown does stand out and cannot be concealed from onlookers.

The Sylvan Realm is finally reached! The forest itself seems in good shape, but there are disturbing signs that some of the trees have been cleared. There seems to be enemy camps scattered around the forest. Overhead men on Wyvern’s can occasionally be seen on patrol. In the camps dozens of orcs are spotted. Each camp bears a flag with an unfamiliar design to it.
A crystalline structure is spotted near the center of the Sylvan Realm and it is decided to land near it to begin your exploration. Sherwood directs the barge lower to the ground. As you get closer, you can see that the Crystal Structure sits in a small clearing.
The barge is slowly lowered until you’re finally underneath the treetops. The forest is much like the Elfholds. The Trees are extraordinarily high and some have structures built and grown into them. A few buildings are seen on the ground, but much of the area is open. The undergrowth has grown wild with no one to tend to it. Fruit bearing trees and bushes flourish and are plentiful here. Sherwood sits the barge down near the base of one of the trees.
The elves feel their special connection to the forest, but it is not as strong as it was in the Elfholds. Perhaps the weakened state of the Mother Tree is the cause of this.
The rangers go forth to scout out the immediate area while the others take in the crystalline structure. The crystal structure is circular and thirty feet wide. Four crystal steps surround and lead up to the platform. Four pillars used to hold up a crystal dome, but they have fallen and the overhead dome crashed long ago. A few creeper vines have grown among the shattered crystal.
Four dirt roads intersect at the crystalline area. Weeds and brush has grown on to the roads, but they can still be followed with the trained eye. Near the beginning of each of these roads and just a few feet away from the crystalline area is a small metal slab. These slabs, one for each road, have been covered by dirt with the passing years.
The rangers determine that no one has been here recently. There are no tracks beyond those for common animals. (Squirrels, birds, etc. Non-dangerous forest critters.) The buildings in the immediate area, up to 100 yards from the platform, are deserted.

GM Notes
GM Notes:
Who’s going to use the Star Crown?
The crystal platform seems to be near a small deserted elfin town. The area was check for beings but the buildings themselves were not closely inspected yet. The temperature here is very comfortable, almost an exact copy of the Elfholds. Heavy clothing will not be needed.

Kylie:
Kylie listens to Sherwood relate the news when he returns from Karn's Keep with the chest. "An demonic imposter for all this time?!" Kylie exclaims, astounded. "That's-- That's incredible! No wonder Elcadan has been such a hell-hole for so long.
"Wait. The Deville clan? Isn't that the family Yusef's father belonged to?
"And now Validar's father is a Duke and has been given rule of most of Elcadan." Kylie doesn't sound thilled by the prospect.
Shortly thereafter, Sherwood uses the key Kylie found and opens the chest. She cannot help looking over his shoulder as he does so. Inside are the largest and most beautiful gemstones she's ever seen. "Beautiful..." she murmurs breathlessly. The urge to reach out and touch them is strong, but Sherwood does so first. The gems rise up and circle about his head, sparkling in the light. The effect is quite majestic!
"As much as I would love to have such a beautiful artifact, it wouldn't make much sense for me to wear it," Kylie admits, a touch of sadness in her tone. "If I understand its traits correctly, you would get the most benefit from it, Sherwood. Besides, I think it would negate any attempts I might make to be sneaky, and that's an important part of my effectiveness."
===
Descending into the forest, some of the warm feeling she had in the Elfholds comes over Kylie. But the feeling isn't as strong, and some part of her wishes to have that feeling again.
Eventually, they land and disembark the barge. Kylie joins those going to examine the platform, though the fruit hanging from the nearby trees catches her eye. While very wide, the platform is not high, requiring only four steps to reach the top. Moving quietly and gingerly, Kylie glides up the steps to get a better look at the platform - particularly the center and any patterns that may be carved or inlaid into the crystal. She remains at the edge of the top step, wanting to avoid activating any magic that may be present. Kylie uses her native ability to sense magic to see if any is present.

Laucian listens to Sherwood's words stoicly from his point of view it does strike him for the best. Kylie's words catch his ear:
“It is better then the alternative. The alternative that you have known all your life.. Besides We both know Of Validar’s family and their lands, They will do their best to restore Elcaden’s lands or die trying.” he says as he places a hand on her shoulder knowing it may not comfort her. “Give them a chance before you are so quick to condemn them.”

Four crystal steps surround and lead up to the platform. Four pillars used to hold up a crystal dome, but they have fallen and the overhead dome crashed long ago. A few creeper vines have grown among the shattered crystal.
As the barge touches down Laucian makes himself ready with bow in hand. Finally to feel solid ground beneath his feet and the feeling of closeness from the earth begin to work their way through his limbs, though they are somewhat diminished as if the land itself is dying.
“Time to see what we are dealing with.” he says as he raises the cowl of his Cloak of Elvenkind and willing his Chameleon Power ring to make him blend into his surroundings further.
As he goes forth from the barge he spots a diminished gleam from beneath several vines and undergrowth, squatting down near it he places his hand on it, Feeling the familiar feel of metal beneath his hand. With more pressing needs at hand he dismisses any thought of it and moves deeper into the brush picking his way through stopping occasionally to listen and look about.
Finding no significant tracks within the area aside from a squirrels foraging and birds hopping prints , Laucian works his way back to the barge, in doing so he spots one of the elfin buildings closest to the barge , with no fresh tracks he still is cautious and looks in the windows(if any) then the doorway partially concealed. If no threat is seen he will go to the door and peer in, If it appears it was ransacked he will enter and look about.( If door is closed) he will merely go back to the barge.

Not to worry. I don't expect everyone to remember everything. Thankfully all the past posts are right here on the form, so its easy to use the Search function to go back and look things up. Yeah, I sometimes look something up if I know it was covered before. However, if I don't remember it coming up, I don't know to look for it. Such is life with an aging memory.
"Better than what was, yes. Better than all alternatives, I don't know that that is true. I do find it instructive that they couldn't find one person in all of Elcadan worthy to take over the city. Of course, then again, they would never have bothered to look beyond the existing nobility." To her mind, this is just one more fact that demonstrates that the nobility are only really interested in what is best for themselves.Laucian wrote:“It is better then the alternative. "Not quite, Lia," Kylie says. "Yusef's mother was one of the Devilles' slaves, who was used by one of her owners for his own gratification. Yusef was just an unintended and unwanted consequence for that union. As he inherited some demonic blood from his father, I am not entirely confident that he can be trusted, though he seems to be working to prove himself."Lia wrote:“You have acquaintances whom deal with Demons?! Nariya:
Sherwood teleports away and returns with a chest and some news. Inside the chest is an incredible sight. Eight star sapphire gems! Apparently it is a powerful magical item for use by mages. Nariya is hardly surprised by this.
The news is of very little interest to Nariya as well, although it is big news for Kylie. humans and demons Nariya shakes her head there really is no limit to how low humans will go to seek power She listens to the news anyway just to know what is going on should it become an issue in the future.
Finally within the Sylvan Realm, the barge is lowered and Nariya and the rest of the rangers and scouts have something to do. She is glad to get off of the limited size of the barge as well.
The rangers determine that no one has been here recently. There are no tracks beyond those for common animals. (Squirrels, birds, etc. Non-dangerous forest critters.) The buildings in the immediate area, up to 100 yards from the platform, are deserted.
Nariya takes this as a good sign, both that no humanoids or predators have been around lately and that more common animal tracks are seen. Having life within the Realm means that not everything was driven out and that, at least here, the animals are not afraid of anything. Nariya makes her way back to the barge to see if any of the others found anything, especially about the crystal structure.

Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.
Sherwood
Sherwood:
Sherwood’s trip home is an eventful one. He learns much that has transpired in his absence and returns with the chest. Given her upbringing, Kylie has some interest in what has transpired in Elcadan.
“Yusef did say that his father was one of the Deville’s. That could cause trouble for him in the future. Or perhaps he’ll be able to help locate others in his family. The King has ordered that those involved in this be hunted down for their crimes.”
“I look ridiculous,” Sherwood says with a laugh. “This is not really for me either. Now Jallarzi would be stunning in this. Properly this should either be used by Jallarzi or Sharadin as they are among the most powerful mages in the Kingdom. As Kylie noted about herself, it would also negate my ability to move unnoticed through the forest. I have other magic items that duplicate some of the effects of the Crown anyway.”
Sherwood reaches up and touches one of the twirling gems, causing all of them to settle back into the chest.
“Lilia, why don’t you use the Star Crown for the time being? With it you’ll be much more powerful.”
Sherwood doubts that such an invitation need be given twice.
After nearly a week in flight, the barge sets down near the Crystal Platform in the Sylvan Realm. Before landing, Sherwood will use the amulet given to him by the Elf King to take elfin form. Like everyone else, Sherwood is happy to be on the ground again.
“That felt almost like a sea voyage. It makes you wonder if there are air navies out there that function like the usual ocean going kind. Let’s take a look around.”
The area around the landing sight seems to be deserted, but there are animal traces. Nothing dangerous seems to be around.
“All right, let’s explore a little bit. Laucian, Nariya, Valena and myself will scout the surrounding area. We’ll each take one of these paths and travel it for a few miles. Lilia can stay here and study the crystal platform. Kylie, you, Talen, and Lia can explore the buildings in the surrounding area.”
“Our goal right now is to gather information and remain unseen. If there are any signs of trouble, return to the barge. Otherwise, we’ll meet back here at nightfall. Any questions? Let’s move out.”
Sherwood will arbitrarily pick the road going west to scout out.
"A few days on horseback, as much as a week on foot. It depends on the type of terrain you have to pass over."Lia looks out as the barge takes flight with great curiosity. Sherwood begins to point out different cities and towns. "These lands are tremendous. How long does it usually take to get from one city to another?" but then she catches sight of the great sea to the south. Her eyes widen in disbelief and for a time she is quiet merely taking it all in.
“Just keep moving. Lifeshield allows me to Teleport Without Error, so as long as I know where I want to go, I will get there safely.”Kylie wrote:"Would it be safer for you, Sherwood, if we stopped the barge and waited here in midair for you to return? Or would it be just as easy if we kept going?"
Sherwood’s trip home is an eventful one. He learns much that has transpired in his absence and returns with the chest. Given her upbringing, Kylie has some interest in what has transpired in Elcadan.
“Yes it came as quite a surprise. They managed to conceal this fairly well. In the long run I can only see good things coming out of this. Elcadan will eventually be a changed place. While I may not see eye to eye with Validar either, he is an honest and honorable man who would die defending our country. I wouldn’t have supported his joining the King’s Council if I thought he was only out to increase his own personal power at the expense of others.”Kylie listens to Sherwood relate the news when he returns from Karn's Keep with the chest. "An demonic imposter for all this time?!" Kylie exclaims, astounded. "That's-- That's incredible! No wonder Elcadan has been such a hellhole for so long.
"Wait. The Deville clan? Isn't that the family Yusef's father belonged to?
"And now Validar's father is a Duke and has been given rule of most of Elcadan." Kylie doesn't sound thrilled by the prospect.
“Yusef did say that his father was one of the Deville’s. That could cause trouble for him in the future. Or perhaps he’ll be able to help locate others in his family. The King has ordered that those involved in this be hunted down for their crimes.”
Sherwood feels funny for a moment as he adjusts to the power of the Star Crown. He pauses to check out his reflection in a nearby mirror.Shortly thereafter, Sherwood uses the key Kylie found and opens the chest.

Sherwood doubts that such an invitation need be given twice.
"They are most likely the invaders that forced the elves to retreat. This is strange. I half expected the forest to be in much worse shape than this with an orc occupation. There must be a powerful ruler here that keeps them at bay for some unknown reason.”Talen wrote:Finally the Sylvan Realms come into view! It is a magnificent sight, reminding him of the first time he was in the Elfholds. But there is danger too! Riders on top of flying monsters are seen, as are orcs. "Do you think those riders and the orcs are the enemy? Or is the enemy already inside the elf lands?"

Lilia
Lilia:
When not giving language lessons to Kylie and Talen, Lilia will typically be curled up with a book. Sherwood departs and returns with the chest holding the magic item the Belcadiz elves were attempting to deliver. He opens the chest to reveal eight beautiful star sapphires. Their value must be enormous!
The subject of who should use the item comes up. Logically, it should be Sherwood as he is the most powerful mage here. But he mysteriously offers it to another.
“Are you sure, Sherwood Elf Friend? I mean, this is a very powerful item… As you wish, Sherwood.”
Almost giddily, Lilia reaches out and touches one of the star sapphires. Immediately, they fly up and begin to circle her head. The effect of the Star Crown is immediately noticeable.
“I could get used to this,” Lilia says after a time. “It is ironic that an artifact of elfin manufacture will now be used to help save the Mother Tree. Our ancestors aid us on this quest.”
Reaching down, Lilia removes her Talisman of Memorization. “I was given this some time back and the Star Crown now duplicates its function. Why don’t you use it, Sherwood? It will save you time in recovering your spells.”
Sherwood also returns with news. It seems that Elcadan, that stinking human city was actually ruled by demons. Lilia doesn’t show any significant emotion at that or at the discussion between Kylie, Laucian, and Sherwood that follows.
“What does it really matter, Kylie? You’ve embraced your elfin heritage and are far away from Elcadan. Do the affairs of humans really matter to you?”
The barge finally lands and Lilia is happy to not only be on the ground again, but in the Sylvan Realm itself! She concentrates for a moment, bring her enhanced elfin senses into play.
“The energy given to us by the All Father greatly increased the sharpness of my senses. The Star Crown increases the range of them as well. I can assure you all that we are alone here. There are no other beings within range of my senses.”
While the others are off exploring, Lilia investigates the strange crystal platform with Kylie. Before long everyone is back. Sherwood sends the rangers out to explore, while Kylie, Lia, and Talen explore the elfin town. That leaves Lilia to examine the crystal platform.
She’ll examine the platform from a distance and will walk around it at least once. Noticing the metal slab, Lilia will bend down to examine it. Is there anything written or engraved upon it? From there she’ll start up the steps to the platform and will try to detect magic on it.

Valena
Valena:
Valena is excited to be on the ground again. She feels the familiar touch of an elfin forest, but it’s not as strong as in the Elfholds. Perhaps it indicates just how weak the Mother Tree is.
Bow in hand, Valena scouts around the landing area and concludes that no one is around. Sherwood calls for the rangers to scout further. He chooses the west road.
“I’ll go north, if nobody else minds.”
Assuming that is okay, Valena will go north to scout.

Talen
Talen:
We arrive at the Sylvan Realm and Talen wonders about the purpose of the wyvern riders and the orcs.
Talen feels better once on the ground. The love of the Mother Tree is felt and it makes him all warm inside. Sherwood has us split up to explore. Talen is given the elfin city to check out along with Lia and Kylie.
“This might be fun!”
Spotting an building up in the trees, Talen beings to climb up the side of the tree to reach it.
“Well, that makes me feel better. I was beginning to think that I wasn’t very bright. Thank you, Kylie.”"Easy?" Kylie asks with a snort. "I wish it were so."
"I wouldn't worry too much, Talen. I suspect it's difficult for most aspiring mages. If it were easy, there would be a whole lot more wizards in the world. There may be a few true prodigies who breeze through this stuff, but I doubt they are common."

Talen nods his understanding, but really isn’t so sure. The only orcs he ever ran into were friendly ones before.Sherwood wrote:"They are most likely the invaders that forced the elves to retreat. This is strange. I half expected the forest to be in much worse shape than this with an orc occupation. There must be a powerful ruler here that keeps them at bay for some unknown reason.”

Kylie:
Kylie chuckles when Sherwood describes himself as looking ridiculous with the new Crown. He agrees with her that it would limit the ability to be stealthy, and so offers it to Lilia. Not surprisingly, Lilia is thrilled by the prospect. Kylie watches as the elf activates the Crown, setting the gems whirling about her head. Lilia in return offers her own Talisman of Memorization to Sherwood, as he should still get good use of it's benefit.
They take a brief look around after landing, then Sherwood calls them back together.
Kylie will move out and begin exploring the buildings, one at a time. She moves quietly and carefully, in case there is someone or something living within. Her bow is ready in her hands with an arrow nocked, just in case.
"Okay," Kylie replies. Looking at Lifeshield appraisingly, she says, "That's a very handy item indeed."Sherwood wrote:“Just keep moving. Lifeshield allows me to Teleport Without Error, so as long as I know where I want to go, I will get there safely.”
"You're welcome, Talen, though I can't say much about your intelligence yet, one way or the other," Kylie replies with a smirk. "But I suppose we shall see... in time."Talen wrote:“Well, that makes me feel better. I was beginning to think that I wasn’t very bright. Thank you, Kylie.”
"This could be quite a trial for Yusef. I suspect we'll learn much of the nature of his character." Only time will tell whether what they learn is good or bad.Sherwood wrote:“Yes it came as quite a surprise. They managed to conceal this fairly well. In the long run I can only see good things coming out of this. Elcadan will eventually be a changed place. While I may not see eye to eye with Validar either, he is an honest and honorable man who would die defending our country. I wouldn’t have supported his joining the King’s Council if I thought he was only out to increase his own personal power at the expense of others.”
“Yusef did say that his father was one of the Deville’s. That could cause trouble for him in the future. Or perhaps he’ll be able to help locate others in his family. The King has ordered that those involved in this be hunted down for their crimes.”
Kylie stops and stares at Lilia for a moment. "I have not given up my humanity, nor do I intend to," Kylie replies. "My father still lives near there, and many of the few friends I had before meeting Sherwood still live there, as does Jallarzi - my mentor and Sherwood's cousin."Lilia wrote:“What does it really matter, Kylie? You’ve embraced your elfin heritage and are far away from Elcadan. Do the affairs of humans really matter to you?”

Kylie considers the question for a moment. "Do you think that these kinds of items are really that common?" she asks Sherwood, gesturing toward the Spell Engine and the Star Crown they had used before it.Sherwood wrote:“That felt almost like a sea voyage. It makes you wonder if there are air navies out there that function like the usual ocean going kind. Let’s take a look around.”
Having recently learned first hand just how acute elven senses are, Kylie can only wonder at what Lilia's are like now. It must be an intense experience in and of itself!Lilia wrote:“The energy given to us by the All Father greatly increased the sharpness of my senses. “Our goal right now is to gather information and remain unseen. If there are any signs of trouble, return to the barge. Otherwise, we’ll meet back here at nightfall. Any questions? Let’s move out.”
"It seems we have our assignment," Kylie says to Talen. "Whether it is fun has yet to be seen."Talen wrote:“This might be fun!”

Post Continued:
The elves have reached the Sylvan Realm. Surprisingly, the great forest seems intact and there is no sign of occupation. There are guard patrols and multiple stations set up outside the Sylvan Realm, but none spotted inside thus far. The barge sets down under a cloak of invisibility and the group explores the immediate area. The rangers move off to secure the area while the others examine the crystal platform.
As Kylie approaches, she uses her ability to Detect Magic. The entire crystal platform detects as magical. Occasionally a ray of sunlight will filter in through the trees. When it hits any of the crystal on the platform, the light splits into the colors of the rainbow. She does not notice any patterns inlaid in the crystal on the top of the platform.
While out exploring, Laucian takes a look at a few of the buildings on the ground. The buildings do not appear to have been ransacked, nor do they suggest that the occupant left in a great hurry. Everything seems to be in order, but it is clear from the dust that no one has been here for a long time. It appears that the occupant knew they were leaving and had time to make their preparations.
After the initial scouting, Sherwood decides to investigate further. Each of the rangers is to travel down one of the roads that leave this area, while Lilia examines the platform further. Lia, Talen, and Kylie will investigate the small town up in the trees around the platform.
Lilia starts her investigation but examining the metal slabs near the roads. She clears the debris from the first one and discovers that there is a word up on: “Iezirah”. Each of the other three platforms is searched and all of them a single words carved into them. The other three are “Beriah”, “Atziluth”, and “Asiah”.
The words are from an older, more formal version of elfish. They roughly translate into water, air, earth, and fire.
While studying the platforms, Lilia notes something about the nearby crystal stairs. There are three depressions in the stairs close to each of the four platforms. From the looks of it, each depression is about the size of a large medallion. There are twelve depressions in all.

Page two
Talen, Kylie and Lia take to the trees and begin to explore the elfin dwellings overhead. They are much like those they encountered in the Elfholds. The dwellings are either built on the larger branches or are in the branches themselves. They give the appearance in places of having been grown like this.
The dwellings up here are similar to the ones Laucian found on the ground. They are not ransacked, nor did the occupant just suddenly up and leave. Everything was put away and no spoiled food is found. There are signs of small animals being here. Half-eaten nuts are found on the floor, suggesting the presence of squirrels.
A few of the dwellings are cleaner than the others. There are times when all three half-elves get the feeling that someone is watching them. You can even sense movement behind you, but when you look nothing is there.
The rangers follow the roads away from the crystal platform. Valena heads north and within a few minutes comes to an elegant wooden bridge that spans the river. She passes over the bridge and the road continues to the north following the river.
After a time, a noise in the brush diverts her attention. It sounds like the pitiful squawking of a bird. Following the noise, Valena comes across a wounded falcon hopping on the ground. There are large gashes in one of its wings and it is obvious that it cannot fly. It eyes the elf maiden cautiously.
Laucian’s path takes east from the platform. His road follows along the river. He can tell that the river is a healthy one. Many animal tracks lead up to the shore and a few fish are spotted within the waters. The area almost seems like it hasn’t been touched by civilization in a very long time.
The sound of sudden movement attracts Laucian! He spins and catches a glimpse of something white running off through the brush. Judging by the sounds of its footfalls, it sounds similar to the footfalls a small horse or pony and has four limbs.
Sherwood’s path leads him towards the west. There are signs of animal life, but nothing beyond that. The area is peaceful and there seems no threat of danger.
Nariya walks to the south, taking in her surroundings. Regular animal life seems to be here in abundance. Squirrels are seen, along with numerous birds. A skunk is spotted in the distance and easily avoided.
In a clearing to the right side of the road, Nariya spots a deer. The animal appears to be healthy and is unaware of her presence. It calmly eats wild berries. As she watches, Nariya begins to get the feeling that something is watching her. But she looks around and sees nothing.
Now what?

Lia
After the rangers depart, Kylie Talen and Lia make for the trees. After a few moments climb Lia makes her way into a dwelling.
As she walks about inspecting the house the hairs on the back of her neck begin to stand on end as she begins to have a feeling as if they are being watched by someone or something. A gush of wind whistles through the branches and leaves of the tree, as she senses something move behind her. Drawing her sword as she spins, she faces the movement but nothing is there!! Her eyes dart about the room looking for something but nothing is there at all.
“Whose there?” she asks rhetorically not expecting and answer in the least. “Maybe just the wind….or spirits.” she says under her breath.
Lia will remain on guard as she searches the houses, If any books or symbols remain, that look as if they could be a clan symbol, she will retrieve them and return to the platform.

“Good hunting.” he says to the other rangers as they depart the others.
As Laucian makes his way deeper into the forest the path begins to wind away from the woods toward the rustling of the river and its bed. Laucian spots several animal tracks and squats down near them assessing what animals maybe a threat and those who will show little threat to him and his comrades, if they come this way.
Several large bass and other fish are seen swimming within a few yards from shore. Judging from the tracks it is quite the watering hole. At least the river seems full of life and quite vibrant. As he begins to enjoy is surroundings a sudden movement to his right catches his eye.
Drawing his bow and grabbing an arrow, he hears the familiar sounds of horse footfalls. Turning to see what exactly he is dealing with his eyes fall upon a glimpse of a white form running through the brush.
He quickly stashes arrow as he gazes hard into the underbrush, Hoping to get another glimpse of the beast. Several thoughts run through his mind as to what manor of beast it is but what made it run, if it wasn’t he that spooked it.
A beast with white coloring and footfalls of a horse or pony… he looks down at his holy symbol for a moment then moves into cover, Cloak hood still up/ring working, and looks about for any threat. If none is seen of he will move to where the beast ran through the brush and look at the track that it hopefully left.
If the tracks are horse hooves or the likes, Laucian will move to track it and follow for a time with his weapons away.

Kylie:
Before departing on her assigned task, Kylie turns to Lilia. "I checked and the whole platform radiates as magical. I don't know what that means, exactly, but it must have a purpose."
Kylie begins her search by climbing one of the trees up to a building. It's something of a novel experience for her; she has done almost all of her previous climbing on man-made structures.
The interior of the building proves to be in excellent shape. The indications are that the inhabitants left in an orderly manner, rather than fleeing in desperation. She checks a few other buildings, and the conditions are similar. Other than signs of squirrels and birds here and there, they appear to be exactly as they were left. Kylie finds this most intriguing.
Before she has an opportunity to investigate further, Kylie gets an inkling that she's being watched. Rat trained her well, and she doesn't spin around as most would. Instead, she acts casually, trying to arrange an opportunity to see in something reflective or look out of the corner of her eye while facing off to one side. It's probably just a squirrel or something, but Kylie would rather know for sure before dismissing it.
She can just hear Lia saying something from a nearby dwelling. Perhaps she has found something. Still being aware of her surroundings, Kylie calls out. "Are you okay, Lia? Did you find anything?"

Nariya:
Everyone speaks up and eagerly blurts out directions they're going to scout in, leaving Nariya with the south path. She shrugs as one is as good as the next since it is all new.
Nariya walks to the south, taking in her surroundings. Regular animal life seems to be here in abundance. Squirrels are seen, along with numerous birds. A skunk is spotted in the distance and easily avoided.

Nariya definitely feels much more relaxed at seeing all the wildlife about. She had thought it could have been grim here. If she hadn't seen the wyvern riders then she would have almost thought no one was still around.
Watching a deer, careful to not disturb it, she gets the feeling she is being watched. Glancing around, she sees nothing, but then pretending she spotted something, she quietly gets up and walks into some brush.
Nariya waits, crouched and listening, to see if any sound betrays her stalker. She finds a good spot that can't be approached without some noise or movement being noticed and waits a while to see if anything or anyone shows itself.

Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

Sherwood:
Sherwood accepts the talisman and hangs it around his neck.
“I’m sure, Lilia. But as I said before, this is only temporary. You’re the second most powerful mage and some of the abilities I have overlap those of the Star Crown. You’ll gain far more from using it than I would have.”Lilia wrote:“Are you sure, Sherwood Elf Friend? I mean, this is a very powerful item… As you wish, Sherwood.”
“That is an interesting way to put it. I’m sure that Lady Marianita would approve.”Lilia wrote:Almost giddily, Lilia reaches out and touches one of the star sapphires.
“I would be honored to.”Lilia wrote:Reaching down, Lilia removes her Talisman of Memorization. “I was given this some time back and the Star Crown now duplicates its function. Why don’t you use it, Sherwood? It will save you time in recovering your spells.”
Sherwood accepts the talisman and hangs it around his neck.
“I’ve never been one to boast, but Lifeshield is probably just as powerful Star Crown is in its own way. It’s intelligent and that intelligence came from an ancient elfin mage. He does not remember much of his past life, but loves to explore new things. The personal protection it offers me cannot be matched.”Kylie wrote:"Okay," Kylie replies. Looking at Lifeshield appraisingly, she says, "That's a very handy item indeed."
“That is the key. Just how common are these items? How easily are they manufactured? It’s easy to imagine just how much more powerful and useful an air fleet is to an ocean based one. I would create one if I were in the position to do so.”Kylie wrote:Kylie considers the question for a moment. "Do you think that these kinds of items are really that common?" she asks Sherwood, gesturing toward the Spell Engine and the Star Crown they had used before it.
Sherwood enjoys his walk through the elfin forest. It seems so peaceful and tranquil here. He’ll keep Lifeshield at full protection just in case. He’ll time his walk so that he returns to the landing spot by dusk.Sherwood’s path leads him towards the west. There are signs of animal life, but nothing beyond that. The area is peaceful and there seems no threat of danger.
I do what is necessary.

Lilia
Lilia:
The effects of the Star Crown quickly become apparent. The Elf Maiden feels smarter than she was before. She feels that the numbers of spells she can hold in memory has dramatically increased. The power of the artifact is nearly intoxicating.
“That must be it! The purpose for this whole place.”
Lilia is excited, but must wait for the others to return. She won’t risk calling out to them for the time being, but when someone does come back, she’ll greet them with, “I think I’ve got this figured out. I believe I know the purpose for this crystal platform. I know why none of the others never made it here."
“You’re argument is a logical one,” Lilia agrees.Sherwood wrote:“I’m sure, Lilia. But as I said before, this is only temporary. You’re the second most powerful mage and some of the abilities I have overlap those of the Star Crown. You’ll gain far more from using it than I would have.”

“My apologies. I thought that Orlane was far removed from Elcadan. I did not take Jallarzi into consideration.”Kylie stops and stares at Lilia for a moment. "I have not given up my humanity, nor do I intend to," Kylie replies. "My father still lives near there, and many of the few friends I had before meeting Sherwood still live there, as does Jallarzi - my mentor and Sherwood's cousin."
Lilia also notices the strange lift effect on the crystal. It puzzles her, but decides that its not something to dwell upon.As Kylie approaches, she uses her ability to Detect Magic. The entire crystal platform detects as magical. Occasionally a ray of sunlight will filter in through the trees. When it hits any of the crystal on the platform, the light splits into the colors of the rainbow. She does not notice any patterns inlaid in the crystal on the top of the platform.
“I agree, it is highly enchanted, even in its disabled state. But its purpose eludes me.”Before departing on her assigned task, Kylie turns to Lilia. "I checked and the whole platform radiates as magical. I don't know what that means, exactly, but it must have a purpose."
The dirt covering the metal slabs is cleared away to reveal words. The words do not make sense at first, but with her heightened intelligence, Lilia makes the connection with old elvish. They stand for air, fire, earth, and water, the four elements that many believed the world to be made of. Everything is composed of varying amounts of those elements. Then something else is noticed.Lilia starts her investigation but examining the metal slabs near the roads. She clears the debris from the first one and discovers that there is a word up on: “Iezirah”. Each of the other three platforms is searched and all of them a single word carved into them. The other three are “Beriah”, “Atziluth”, and “Asiah”.
The words are from an older, more formal version of elfish. They roughly translate into water, air, earth, and fire.
Three depressions in four groups. Twelve in all. Sunlight hits the crystal again and it does its strange light trick. Inspiration strikes Lilia and she fumbles through her pack to bring out the elfin star map. She stares at the map for several minutes and then things start to fall into place. Looking up, she takes in the crystal platform once more. While studying the platforms, Lilia notes something about the nearby crystal stairs. There are three depressions in the stairs close to each of the four platforms. From the looks of it, each depression is about the size of a large medallion. There are twelve depressions in all.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Talen:
Talen is eager to go exploring. The first elfin home seems pleasant enough. Talen can almost imagine living here, although the ceilings are a little too low for his liking. It must have been wondrous to have grown up here!
He hears Lia calling out in the distance. She sounds in distress! Drawing is sword, Talen rushes to his sister’s aid.
“What’s wrong? Is everything all right?”, he’ll call out upon reaching her.

Valena:
Valena creeps forward as quietly as she can. The forest here is so lush and welcoming. It’s almost like being home in the Elfholds once more. Valena marvels at the craftsmanship of the elfin bridge. Its sweeping elegant curves are very stylish.
The road follows the river towards the mountains to the north. There seems to be numerous fish in the river and there are many tracks near the shores. Animals come here to drink regularly and none of them seem to be dangerous if left alone.
“What have we here? It seems that you were on the wrong end of an attack, little one.”
Bending down on one knee, Valena will try to calm the bird enough to let her help it.
“There’s nothing to be afraid of. I will not harm you. Let me fix that wing of yours.”
Valena will reach out, but not threateningly so. She’ll slowly advance forward without making any sudden moves. If it will let her, Valena will heal the falcon’s wounds.

Upon hearing the noise, Valena stops dead in her tracks. She first attempts to identify the sound before preceding any further. Is I the sound of someone genuinely in need or is it trap? Moving into the brush, Valena finds the wound falcon and her demeanor softens.

Up in the trees, the half-elves explore the elfin town. Splitting up, the cautiously explore the seeming abandoned dwellings. After a time, each feels as if they are being watched.
Suddenly, Lia calls out, breaking the silence.
Before any further words can be exchanged, Lia spots something nearby! The others easily see what she’s spotted. Floating in mid-air outside the elfin dwelling is a glowing patch of light that vaguely looks man-shaped, but no features can be made out. It hovers in mid-air with no visible support!
In a ghostly voice, the apparition demands of the half-elves, “Why are you here?” in the elfish tongue.
Elsewhere in the forest, Laucian has spotted something. There was the movement of something white amongst the brush, but it seems to have run off. After a moments wait, Laucian follows. He easily finds the animals hoof prints and can follow it.
After a few minutes of pursuit, the brush opens up to a small clearing. There, on the other side about 30 yards away is a sight that takes Laucian’s breath away. It is a majestic unicorn! The unicorn is a male of its species, the flowing beard like growth of hair underneath its chin is a give away. It is fully-grown.
The unicorn turns and looks into Laucian’s eyes for a moment. Then he turns, and trots off into the underbrush once more, moving away from Laucian.
While watching a wild deer, Nariya gets the impression that someone or thing is watching her. Pretending to have spotted something of interest, the pathfinder moves off to check it out. Once there, Nariya looks to discover the source of her discomfort.
As she watches and waits, no one appears and no disturbing sounds are heard. After a few minutes of this, Nariya’s attention is drawn to one of the trees near to where she had been standing. She realizes just what it was she was sensing and comes forth.
The tree’s eyes open and they watch Nariya closely.
“It has been a long time since I’ve seen an elf in these woods,” the Treant says in its native language. “What brings you here elfling?”
Elsewhere in the woods, Valena has come across a wounded bird. She moves towards the falcon gently and slowly. The bird does not try to flee. It sits there and watches as she heals its damaged wing.
The magic of the spell closes its wounds. The falcon tests it’s repair wing for a few moments and then takes flight once more. It screeches happily as it soars overhead.
After a few minutes of flight, the falcon circles back and hovers before Valena. She holds out her arm and the falcon gently lands there.

This alerts both Kylie and Talen. Talen comes running, with his weapon drawn. Kylie spots the movement and joins them.“Whose there?” she asks rhetorically not expecting any answer in the least. “Maybe just the wind….or spirits.” she says under her breath.

Following the tracks he moves deeper into the forest. Birds and other small woodland creatures make their presence known as the trees and underbrush begin to lighten. Moving a great fern leaf from his vision, a small clearing is discovered.
Scanning the clearing left to right , he stops dead in his tracks as a white form is standing, before him from on the other side of the clearing.
The most beautiful of all the forest creatures stands before him. He cannot help but stare at the great muscles, past to its flanks to the pure white mane that blocks one of its eyes. Gazing past all this his gaze is drawn to the large single horn that lays about its forehead.
A great smile plays about his face as the excitement runs through his veins and finding it hard to breath.
An Unicorn, The King and Queens of the Forests and pure of heart and goodness stands before him. As he realizes this The Unicorn turns and stares at him for a moment, in which he can make out the great growth of hair beneath its chin. ‘Definitely a male’ he thinks to himself as its eyes meet his amber gaze.
For a few moments he watches the Unicorn turn and trot through the brush. A several thoughts run through his head as he gets up to follow. “Perhaps he wishes to show me something.” he thinks to himself.
As he looks to make sure the clearing is indeed clear, he can’t help but say quietly out loud, “Valena and Nariya are going to be so jealous.” He then moves off in pursuit of the unicorn.

Her brother comes running in sword drawn, Lia is aware that he is there but says nothing. Merely nods in the direction of the ghostly figure.. Lia looks about then she spots something hovering in mid air! A vaguely shaped man hovers over head even with the dwelling.
Lia speaks but in under common to her brother, “Do not speak to it…a human figure in elfin land.” hoping that her brother can possibly put it together.
She then turns to the ghostly figure. She eyes it curiously as she renews her grip on her sword assessing the thing before her.
“Do you not know it is rude to answer a question with a question? I ask you first spirit!” she says with an even tone as a smile plays about her face. “You will get no answers from us till you state who you are or were.” As she is saying this will try to see if it is indeed an illusion.
(Figured she couldn't answer Kylie or Talen for the moment. As it may or may not be a ghost... Perhaps seeking information on us.)

"The origin of Lifeshield is a very long, but interesting tale. The short version is that Thiondar was a great elfin mage and leader of his clan, Clan Anachrin. They left the Sylvan Realm before the current crisis and eventually settled in a place called the Valley of Ch'thar. It was in this valley that Thiondar came across a forgotten relic called the Stone of Gul. The Stone was very powerful and was used to change the geological conditions of the valley. The stone also drove him mad and Thiondar's followers abandoned him. None of the elves remained when my associates and I arrived there last year. We ended up battling Thiondar and he wielded Lifeshield. It seems that he had multiple personalities and these personalities were at war with each other. We managed to defeat Thiondar and upon his death, his spirit was drawn into the sword and cleansed of its madness and its knowledge of its past life. It is now the intelligence that dwells in Lifeshield."
"Thiondar had a magic item that he created to destroy the Stone of Gul, but could never manage to do it himself. It was what he called a Rod of Transport, an item that was able to move large objects or groups by teleportation. Using it, we teleported the Stone into the heart of a volcano where it was destroyed. By destroying the stone, all the magical effects used to create the Valley of Ch'Thar were removed as well. A volcano erupted and the others and I escaped using the Rod of Transport. We managed to take with us most of Thiondar's library, hundreds of books that we gave to the elves in the Elfholds. That's how I got the 'Elf Friend" title."

Sherwood spins a fascinating tale of Lifeshield and the entity that inhabits it. Kylie listens to the story, envisioning the events in her mind as Sherwood describes them. "Clan Anachrin? "Whatever happened to that Rod of Transport you mentioned? I would think that would be a very useful item." Depending on what it's limits were, it might well have made this quest much shorter.

Up in the trees, the half-elves have come across an apparition of some sorts. It asks them why they are here.
“The elves have been gone for a very long time and only they knew where the Mother Tree is. It is your wish to help the elves? That you are not invaders who mean to do harm?”
Out in the forest, Laucian has come across a male unicorn. This legendary animal is held in high esteem among the Ehlonna faithful. Their holy symbol is fashioned to resemble a unicorn’s horn. The great stallion watches Laucian for a moment, and then trots off. Sensing that the unicorn wants him to follow, Laucian moves off in pursuit.
The unicorn remains in view long enough for Laucian to follow. As he moves through the dense forest, Laucian begins to spot markings in the trees. There are signs that his instructors showed him before engraved into the trees. It is the glyph representing that this forest is under the protection of unicorns. Rangers are trained to spot it, but even then they are difficult to find.
Laucian spots another sign amongst the trees, one that is familiar to him. The sigil tells him that a Shrine to Ehlonna is near.
After emerging from some particular thick brush, Laucian reaches the shrine. It is located in a lovely glade. There is a small altar dedicated to Ehlonna near the center. A few buildings can be spotted in the trees that surround the glade.
A small brook burbles through the glade. Several animals are there drinking from its waters. There are a family of raccoons and two deer. Small birds fly overhead. None of the animals show any sign of being afraid of Laucian’s presence.
The unicorn is there as well, near the entrance Laucian passed through.
“Welcome follower of Ehlonna,” the unicorn says in elfish. “I sensed the power of the goddess within your bow. Have you come to restore this forest to its former state?”
Elsewhere in the woods, Nariya has come across a Treant.
“One man commands the invaders, but he seeks something in the forest. He seeks to make the Mother Tree’s power his and become immortal. He has cut down trees that held the elves to extend his already unnatural life span. He is evil and must be uprooted.”
“If you need aid, seek out the centaurs and the griffons. They will help the elves.”
Now what?
Up in the trees, the half-elves have come across an apparition of some sorts. It asks them why they are here.
Lia wrote:“Do you not know it is rude to answer a question with a question? I ask you first spirit!” she says with an even tone as a smile plays about her face. “You will get no answers from us till you state who you are or were.” As she is saying this will try to see if it is indeed an illusion.
Lia studies the apparition and can determine that it’s not an illusion. It speaks once more.Kylie wrote:Kylie is aghast at Lia's handling of the situation. Hopefully, she has not made it unsalvageable.
"I apologize for my companion's dissembling," Kylie interjects. "We seek the elves of this land and the Mother Tree of which they were guardians. The world has desperate need of them."

“The tree’s weep,” the Treant answers in its slow and halting voice. “The Mother Tree is in pain and all can feel her suffering. Long ago, men and orcs came and they drove the elves away. Some stayed behind to tend to the Mother Tree. Keepers they were called and their bodies merged with trees so that they may slumber until they were needed. But the Keeper was killed before she could release her replacement. The Mother Tree goes untended and withers. She is hidden away, but her roots run deep and all in the forest feel her suffering.”Nariya wrote:After a bit of waiting, Nariya takes a bit more active search. Spotting a particular tree she had been standing near, she immediately realizes what she was feeling. As if on cue, the Treant opens its eyes at her direct approach. Nariya can barely control her desire to laugh and smile at her discovery.
"It is an honor, magnificent one," Nariya replies in Treant, reverence in her voice. "I have come with others to remove the stink that has lingered in these lands for too long."
"What can you tell me of the area?" Nariya inquires, "and what can I do to improve your surroundings great father of the trees?"

Now what?
Try it and find out!

Lia shrugs off that she was mistaken about the presence before her and sheaths her sword. “We do indeed wish to help the elves. Two of our number are followers of Ehlonna and have come to restore these lands to its former glory.”“The elves have been gone for a very long time and only they knew where the Mother Tree is. The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.
To Save Mother Tree!
Kylie:
GM Mad wrote:“The elves have been gone for a very long time and only they knew where the Mother Tree is. It is your wish to help the elves? That you are not invaders who mean to do harm?”
Kylie nods in agreement with Lia's statement. "That is true. If it will help, I am a daughter of Clan Feador; as is another of our small group. I know that many of our clan remained here when others left in ages past. I hope to find them so that our clan may be whole again. Do you know anything of the elves of this land or where they may be found?"Lia wrote:Lia shrugs off that she was mistaken about the presence before her and sheaths her sword. “We do indeed wish to help the elves. Sherwood:
“The magic of the rod only had a limited number of uses. When they were used it, the rod crumbled into dust. It no longer exists.”Kylie wrote:"Whatever happened to that Rod of Transport you mentioned? I would think that would be a very useful item." Depending on what its limits were, it might well have made this quest much shorter.
“It is said that the world is bigger and stranger than we can imagine. That’s a daunting prospect!”Kylie wrote:"I'm still having trouble thinking in terms of just how big the world is and how little of it I have seen. That may be an area where Yusef has a better understanding, given what I know of his patron. Perhaps I'll talk with him about it next time we meet."

Lilia:
Lilia listens with great interest to Sherwood’s tale of Thiondar. The history of the elfin mage is known to her, but not his final fate. The subject had come up before, but at that time Lilia chose not to believe Sherwood’s claim that Thiondar’s essence now dwells within Lifeshield.

“There are many other smaller elf clans in the Elfholds alone, Kylie,” Lilia explains. “At least a dozen, maybe as many as twenty. The main eight are merely the largest ones in the Elfholds. That doesn’t even consider other clans outside the Elfholds like Nariya’s.”Sherwood spins a fascinating tale of Lifeshield and the entity that inhabits it. Kylie listens to the story, envisioning the events in her mind as Sherwood describes them. "Clan Anachrin? That's another clan that hasn't been mentioned before. I wonder just how many elf clans there are in the world..." Kylie muses.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!
Talen
Talen:
Talen rushes up to Lia, wondering why she cried out. She points off into the distance and Talen turns to see. His mouth drops open in shock as something, vaguely man-shaped seems to be hovering in mid-air! This specter demands to know why they are here!
Before Talen can even find words to say, both Lia and Kylie are engaged in conversation with the apparition. They seem to be making progress, so Talen adds nothing but stands ready to defend himself and the girls.

Laucian
Moving forward he begins to see similar markings within the trees. As he is moving he wonders just how large this Unicorn’s territory is. Moving past a large Tree a far more familiar sign catches his eyes, the sign in which is the marking of his deity. A temple is nearby.
A large bit of brush hampers his passing but he pressed on through it. As he does so a beautiful glade comes into view. Within a few moments Laucian knows it is a shrine to his patron.
Looking about he takes in the scenery from the babbling brook to the dwelling within the outskirts of glade. Several animals are about though, none seem to bothered by his presence, as it should be. He has heard of the unicorn’s territory, Any whom harm the land or those who dwell within must face the unicorn itself.
A voice in Elfish soon reaches his hear, turning to face the voice he soon realizes it is the unicorn that is speaking with him.
“With every breath and every beat of my heart I wish to see this forest restored to the way it was. So that woodland creatures and elves may live in peace yet again. You have my word, Forest Lord, that the filth that threaten these woods and everything in it will meet its end.”
He looks about the glade noticing no real sign of any elves Laucian grows concerned and asks, “How long has it been since the elves left these woods? It was believed some of Clan Feador remained behind to tend to the Mother tree. Yet of them I have seen no sign.
“As we arrived by airship, something I saw troubled me greatly when we first saw this land. I saw banner, one that I have never lain eyes on. A black moon with a single eye on a field of blood red. Do you know of these markings, who or what they stand for?”
Making his way through the deep forest Laucian moves a branch before him to ease his passage. In doing so a mark within the bark of the tree catches his eye. For a moment he stops and runs his hands above it, So long ago he seen one prior during his training. It is the mark of the Unicorn. A mark to be held in the utmost respect and reverence by his teachings. The unicorn remains in view long enough for Laucian to follow. "We weep as well, great one," Nariya says. It is a bit of relief when she hears that the Mother Tree is hidden away still. "We will make things right again," she adds, about to ask for any other information. The Treant speaks once more before she can.
"Have you seen this man?" Nariya asks. "How would we identify him?" Hopefully the Treant will have a little more information that will prove extremely helpful.
"Where my I find the centaurs and griffons, magnificent one?" Nariya will also ask. She would love to stay and speak longer with the Treant, but it is very obvious they need to make things right, and quickly. There might be time after this has passed for happier conversation.
"I thank you deeply for this information," Nariya says with a respectful tone. "My friends and I will put a stop to this horror so that the forest and all within may live freely and openly once more."
Armed with the new knowledge, Nariya plans to head back. Depending on where the centaurs and griffons are, it might be faster to go alone, but she doesn't want to be gone too long either. Plus there might be news the others have gathered.
