Crucible #2 - "Controlled Experiment"
Gargoyle:
Out at the PRIMUS Base, Silver Avenger Gregory Rackham had just woken the behemoth known as the Gargoyle. As was usual, he wore his red, white, and blue Silver Avenger Uniform. The Cyberline treatments that changed all the men who became Silver Avengers had given Rackham superhuman strength and stamina. Greg was a remarkably fit man with short blonde and thinning hair and green eyes.
The Silver Avenger wondered just what he had done to be saddled with the grotesque Gargoyle. The gray-skinned man was a pleasant as blowing your nose with sandpaper. In fact, the man was a criminal. He had volunteered to undergo genetic experimentation in exchange for an early parole. The man who became Gargoyle had not only survived the experimentation, but became superhumanly strong. Forced to live up to their end of the bargain, Gargoyle was assigned to PRIMUS as a super operative until he had completed his probation. Only four and half years to go.
As was usually, Gargoyle was making a nuisance of himself. He leaped out of bed, putting yet another hole in the ceiling and then collapsed his specially built and reinforced bed again. The man was a menace to himself and everyone around him.
"You stupid imbecile!" Rackham shouts at Gargoyle. As usual, the large man simply ignored the Silver Avengers rantings. "This repair bill is coming out of your pocket!"
"I'M ON IT!", Gargoyle bellows and leaps away right through the hole he already made, greatly enlarging it with his passage. In a second the behemoth was gone.
Silver Avenger Rackham stood there, a stunned look on his face. "The transports waiting for us...", he muttered mostly to himself. "How can one person be so stupid? I sure hope that the upstairs corridor was empty..."
Closing the door once more, Rackham turned and started to run towards the waiting transport. The Gargoyle had done it again. In his excitement to see some action, he had forgotten that the North San Diego Bay separated the Coronado peninsula from the mainland.
Downtown San Diego was only two miles away. Unfortunately, one mile of that distance was over water and too great a distance for even someone with the strength of the Gargoyle to leap. Once he realized his blunder, he'd be waiting for them at the transport.
Lily Pak:
Unknown to the PRIMUS Operatives, not only was their trouble outside the Horton Plaza complex, but inside as well. A group of six bizarre individuals had simply appeared out of the blue. They randomly collected individuals from the crowd for some vile purpose.
Among these unfortunate souls was one Lily Pak, a somewhat-pudgy Asian woman of middling height. She swoons helplessly in the grasp of the monstrous Leech, her life force having been drained from her body.
The next thing Lily knows, she's inside some type of energy field with twelve other equally confused and puzzled people. Her strength coming back, Lily finds herself seated next to a well-dressed and distinguished looking older gentleman. He carries a walking stick with a clear crystal handle.
Then the creepy looking man in black with the flowing white hair approaches the captives. At his gaze, everyone feels waves of tremendous fear wash over them. A feeling of terror, so deep, so numbing, that none of the thirteen can even move or think rationally. They tremble before him, drowning in unseen horror.
Satisfied that the sacrifices are not going anywhere, Affrighter stands silent and watches as Devilspawn begins to cast the spell that will summon the Nether Lord. Power would soon be his.
Brian & Krystyna Walsh:
In a nearby shop, Brian Walsh pulls his wife Krystyna down behind a rack of clothes for her own protection. Krystyna starts to protest, but Brian is gone before she can give voice to her fears or grab on to him. Feeling helpless, Krystyna can only watch as Brian goes to investigate the disturbance.
Using the various pillars and benches as cover, Brian reaches one of the down police officers. They had earlier tried to stop the demonic villains, only to be repulsed in a most violent manner. Dragging the limp officer behind a large flower display in the middle of the walkway, Brain goes to check on the man's condition.
One look is all it takes to see that the man is dead. A giant opening has been carved in his chest. Brian could easily fit his arm into the gaping hole, should he have the desire to do so. (I imagine that he wouldn't wish to test this theory!)
Grabbing the dead officer's radio, Brian whispers into it, alerting the authorities to the current situation. Without waiting for a response, he turns the radio off to prevent any response from being heard. Taking the late officer's revolver and fresh ammo, Brian looks back towards the gathering of villains.
By now a glowing field of energy surrounds two of the criminals-- the scantily clad woman in red and the creepy man in black. The other four patrol the perimeter. Brian watches, waiting for a good opportunity to fire upon the villains.

Interlude #1:
Underneath the sewers of New York City, a fetid blob of eyestalks and protoplasm happily floats along. Yu, a rough translation of the creatures name into the local tongue, has been most pleased with his new home. For the last two and half months, he has explored the vast sewer system and observed the native life forms. In spite of the hideous appearance of the locals, the last two and half months had been the happiest of his life.
Yu had been summoned to Earth from his home plane by some mage for some, no doubt, evil purpose. Yu did want to have anything to do with that! So, he used his own power and drained the sorcerer of his. Then Yu fled and ended up here in the heavenly sewers. It was almost a paradise to Yu.
Yu happily floated along, growing eyestalks and tentacles as he wished. His form was always changing and in constant flux. Then Yu felt something that he never imagined he would feel again. He felt the call. Someone was summoning him again! A moment later Yu was pulled out of his happy home and was bound for some unknown destination.
End of Interlude:
Cyrus MacGregor:
On the other side of the courtyard and one floor up, Cyrus MacGregor comes tentatively down the walkway, curious as to why everyone is running in the opposite direction. Looking over the railing, he spots the villains and the dead security forces at their feet. Wisely taking cover, Cyrus spies a nearby pay phone.
Moving cautiously to the phone, Cyrus dials up 911 and alerts the operator to what is going on. The operator tells him to evacuate the area, but Cyrus has already dropped the phone and taken cover once more. Fortunately, none of the villains seem interested in pursuing anyone far enough away. Their only goal is to prevent the interruption of the ritual. Cyrus continues to wait and watch from overhead.
Phaseflux:
Close by, Phaseflux, one of San Diego's newest heroes sneaks forward. Using his powers of density and size alteration, Phaseflux has shrunk down to a mere 5 inches in height! His path towards the force field and those inside takes him nervously close to the Monster. Luck is with Phaseflux and he passes the intimidating Monster without being spotted.
Moving closer to the force field, a shimmer comes over Phaseflux and he becomes translucent. Still only 5 inches tall, Phaseflux reaches the glowing field of energy. Tentatively he reaches out to touch field, seeing if he can slip through it. Sparks fly as he touches the field and he finds it to be solid even in his immaterial state.
Behind him, Phaseflux hears a loud grunt. "HRUNNH!!" Spinning, he sees the positively gigantic, from his perspective, Monster rushing forward. With his claw-like fingers reaching towards him, Phaseflux can't help but notice the Monster's demonic glowing red wyes and green skeletal-like face.
Interlude #2:
With all the strength her bloodied and battered body could muster, Serena thrusted her sword forward. The blade was very old and very powerful with a bejeweled and ornate hilt. Its creator had dubbed the blade "Blessed Salvation" and to the wielder and those they helped, that's what it was.
Serena and her companions had been ambushed by a band of Ectolian warriors. The cowards had struck from the shadows where their dark features nearly blended in. By now, only Serena was still alive. All of her friends and companions had met violent ends. Likewise, the Ectolians had sustained heavy losses as well. Only two of the vile creatures remained.
Blood and dirt covered Serena's chain mail armor. Her tabard was also heavily stained. The golden chalice emblazoned upon her chest was virtually unrecognizable. Regardless of her disheveled appearance, Serena paid it no heed. Right now, survival was the most important thing.
The sword thrust had stabbed Serena's attacker right in her black heart. Blood flowed from the Ectolian's mouth as she fell in death. The touch of Blessed Salvation was most painful to those who were evil in spirit. To those darker creatures it burned them to their very soul.
The next thing Serena knew, there was a stabbing pain in her back that traveled all the way through her chest. Glancing down, Serena could see a blood stained blade sticking out of her torso. The blood falling from the blade was hers.
Swinging Blessed Salvation in a wide arc, Serena spun to face her attacker. The Ectolian who had attacked her didn't expect her foe to have survived the fatal stabbing and stood stock still. Blessed Salvation neatly separated the Ectolian's head from her body. Silently, the black skinned woman fell among the dead.
Her breath coming hard now, Serena dropped to her knees. She no longer felt any pain from her wounded and battered body. The sword piercing her chest no longer mattered. For the first time in many years, Serena felt at ease, at peace with the world.
That's when Serena realized that she was not alone. She tried to raise Blessed Salvation for protection, but even that simply task was now beyond her. A strange looking woman had appeared on the battle site from seemingly out of nowhere. She wore a long green garment with matching gloves. Her long reddish purple hair fluttered on the breeze.
"Your battles have ended, Serena of the Golden Chalice," the new arrival stated in a strange accent. "Your time in this world has ended. But there are other worlds out there that need your talents and skills. Will you aid them in their time of need?"
"I live to serve," Serena manages to sputter out. Having said her final words, Serena died.

Page Three
Andrew Knight:
Elsewhere, Andrew Knight makes his way through Horton Plaza. A bit more coherent then he was earlier in the day; he can't help but recall the lovely lady's phone number he required. She was a full figured raven-haired beauty that went by the unlikely name of Lavender. Actually, in hindsight it was easy to understand why she called herself that. Everything she wore was lavender in color and skintight.
"Call me," the voice of Lavender echoed through his head. Her voice was among the most seductive that young Andrew had yet to hear. "I'd just love to take a ride on your powerful machine."
Trying to put Lavender out of his head, Andrew wandered around Horton Plaza. Its maze-like design was beginning to confound the young man. According to the directory there was some place around here called "Mystic Books". Andrew couldn't be sure if was the type of store he was looking for or not.
Judging by just how fancy this mall was, and how out of place his dressing style was, it seemed unlikely that this would be the location for a new age or occult bookstore. Such establishments were typically found in the more rundown side of town where the rent was cheaper. Nonetheless, Andrew continued to search.
Finally, Andrew located what he was searching for on the third floor of the mall and immediately knew that his initial assessment had been correct. Mystic Books stood before him, along with the slogan: "Discover the Magic of Reading!" That, coupled with the number of kids inside, made Andrew realize that this was not what he was searching for.
Continuing to wander, Andrew found himself on a balcony overlooking one of the numerous open courtyards in the Horton Plaza. Down below he spies the ongoing scene. Feeling that he has to do something to help, Andrew spies a nearby set of stairs and begins to descend to the ground level.
Exiting the stairs, he sees both Denier and the Leech on guard. It would almost be impossible to get past both of them. Andrew considers what to do next.
Brian Walsh:
And down on the ground floor, Brian can see the Monster rushing towards the force field for some strange reason. (Phaseflux is too small for Brian to see.) That action has also drawn the attention of Hellfire. Ceasing the opportunity, Brian takes aim and fires!
The bullet strikes the strange glowing man, but doesn't seem to harm him in any way! Hellfire spins and spots his distant assailant. With a flick of his wrists, long glowing ruby blades emerge from the tips of his fingers!
"I'm gonna cut you up real good!", the bizarre man yells as he advances on Brian's position. "Slice-n-dice!"
Suddenly, a painful screeching noise fills the air and a powerful blast of energy streaks in from behind Brian's position and catches Hellfire square in the chest! The glowing man is hurtled backwards some thirty feet through the air before crashing to the smooth floor. Hellfire is dazed and is slowing regaining his feet.
Looking behind him, Brian can see that the Steel Squadron is approaching. The team of armored heroes had been the media darlings of San Diego for the last few months since they broke up a VIPER robbery attempt. By now everyone who lived in San Diego knew who they were.
Each member of the Steel Squadron wore matching armor. The only difference was its color and that in turn provided each with their code name.
Flying in and leading the charge was Black Steel, the team leader. Flying in behind him were Green and Red Steel. Standing on the ground, smoke wafting off his hands was Gray Steel. Skating in around him was the only woman on the team: Blue Steel.
"That's enough noise out of you!", Black Steel called out. "The Steel Squadron is closing this show down right now!"
The arrival of the Steel Squadron attracted the attention of other villains. Denier and the Leech turn away from Andrew, while the Monster looks away from Phaseflux.
However, inside the force field, Devilspawn's spell has reached its conclusion! As her chanting ceases, a glow forms on the ground within the center of the circle. A wind whips around the sacrifices and they feel as if something is pulling them towards the glow.
"You're too late!", Affrighter roars in triumph. "The spell is complete! The Nether Lord Comes!"
Gargoyle:
Meanwhile, outside the Horton Plaza complex, the mysterious flying saucer had not been idle since landing. Many of the confused onlookers moved closer to the craft. Suddenly, a short blast of air around the vehicle sends them scattering once more.
Inside the saucer, the very human occupants of the craft begin their own countdown. They know they have little time to complete their objective before the inevitable interference by the local law enforcement agencies. However, based on the Master's calculations, they should be plenty of time.
The commander of the saucer begins the countdown and reads from the check off list.
"Insert embryos into the pods."
"Embryos inserted."
"Flood the pods with Master's compound."
"Pods flooded. All systems go."
"Extend pods," the commander directs. "Open laser bay."
There is a whirl of activity outside the saucer. Two sets of pods, one pair on the northern side of the ship, two on the southern half swing out of the saucer, like a flower blooming. Each pod is roughly three feet wide and seven feet long. Easily large enough for a person to fit inside.
At the same time, a portion of the top of the saucer slides open and what appears to be a very large gun barrel slides upward. The barrel, easily two inches in diameter points straight up into the sky.
"Fire the pulse laser."
"Firing laser, computer controlled sequence activated."
A bluish beam of energy leaps from the gun barrel, flying straight up into the sky. The laser beam is being pulsated, turned off and on a very fast rate. To those looking on, they can barely make out the separate pulses.
At first the energy seems to be heading straight up in the sky and beyond. But slowly, it seems to begin to hit something about fifty feet overhead. A rip forms in the sky, slowly at first, but rapidly growing in size. Whitish energy appears inside the hole in the sky.
A short distance away, the PRIMUS transport lands bearing Gargoyle, Silver Avenger Gregory Rackham, and Major Star. The Major leads the way, propelled through the air by the nuclear energy coursing through his veins. The red, white, and blue armor he wears helps contain his nuclear energies.
The two PRIMUS operatives and their gruesome charge see the saucer firing the laser into the sky and the tear that is begin to form. They can feel a pressure being excreted by the tear in the sky. A passing pigeon is sucked into the opening, vanishing from sight. The opening and the pull exerted from it continue to grow more and more intense. People are starting to be pulled into the mysterious opening!

GM Notes
GM Notes:
That should keep everyone busy!
Gargoyle is outside near the Saucer with Major Star and the Silver Avenger. The occupants of the saucer have yet to be seen.
Inside Horton's Plaza, here's how everyone is situated:
Krystyna can see Brian and the Steel Squadron. She can also clearly make out the Monster and Hellfire, but not Phaseflux. She cannot see anyone else.
Brian is looking away from Krystyna and can also see Leech and Denier, along with everyone inside the forcefield in addition to the Monster and Hellfire.
Andrew is on the other side of the plaza with Leech and Denier in between him and those in the force field. He cannot see Brian, Krystyna, Phaseflux, or the Monster, but he can see Hellfire and some of the arriving Steel Squadron.
Cyrus from his position overhead can see everyone with the exception of Krystyna and the shrunken Phaseflux.
Lily, inside the force field, can see Devilspawn & Affrighter, but is too terrified to pay much attention to what is going on outside the force field.
Misc. Comments:
Interesting that almost everyone choose the action going on inside instead of outside. Both places are equally dangerous! And gee, everyone left the kids and family at home! Afraid of having other supers in the family?
Next time everything hits the fan and the situation spirals completely out of control!
Post away!

Post away!

Gargoyle
GARGOYLE
Bursting through the roof of the Primus compound Gargoyle snickers gleefully, taking great pleasure at the opportunity to give a little pain back to the thorn in his side. He hits the ground and bounds skyward again with redoubled force... but this time he has to shift his weight down hard to avoid landing in the bay.
"HAHAHA, MORON! I OUGH'TA TEACH THAT GUY A... WHAT THE!?! OH FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD!! I HATE THIS BLASTED ISLAND!!!"
Realizing his error, yet again, Gargy is forced to wait for the Primus Transport. He stands fuming, arms folded as it approaches; Rackham grinning from ear to ear.
Upon reaching Horton Plaza Gargoyle leaps from the transport shocked to find that there does appear a flying saucer landed in the parking lot.
"WELL I'LL BE A MONKEY'S UNCLE!! IT REALLY IS A FLYING SAUCER!!!"
"WHAT THE HECK ARE THEM LITTLE GUYS DOIN!?! SUCKIN PEOPLE UP INTA THE SKY LIKE THAT?!? THAT'S DOWN RIGHT UNFRIENDLY!! AND IF THERE"S ONE THING I KNOW HOW TO HANDLE, IT'S UNFRIENDLY!!"
Surging his strength to +10 Gargoyle launches himself at the saucer attempting to land on top of the craft (gambling that his massive weight will save him from being sucked up, since the rift is just getting strong enough to start lifting normal people). Once on the craft Gargy will grab hold of the barrel shooting the beam into the sky, and squeeze it shut. Assuming he's able to crush it (if not, haymaker the darn thing) and that stops the beam, Gargy will leap down and attempt to lift the craft (smashing out landing gear if necessary to get my hands on it).
If able to lift it, Gargoyle bellows, "HEY RACKHAM! GO LONG!"
(Gargy's figuring that the energy from that beam weapon has to go somewhere and the ship is probably gonna blow. Also guessing that the vortex won't close immediately his intent is to hurl the saucer trough the rift it created hoping to both consume the blast and plug at least part of the rift momentarily. If he doesn't feel like he's going to be able to toss the craft high enough for the rift to suck it in he'll surge for an additional +10 Strength and leap as he hurls. Of course if the ship gives a clear indication that its not going to explode (makes a noise like an engine powering down, stop firing before he crushes the barrel, etc.) Gargoyle will refrain from hurling it, instead dropping it hard to the pavement and punching his way inside.)

Controlled Experiment
Having never encountered anything he could not pass through before, Phaseflux is momentarily at a loss, but turns to look up at the Monster as it approches, and is quick to take advantage of it's distraction.
"Paws off grusome" he says while expanding to full size, "And take a seat".
Riding the momentum of his size increase and increasing his density as well he hopes the ground can take the weight as he swings into his opponent with a jab. (If in his judgement it can't, then just turn off Shrinking and turn on Density.)
Too late he thinks to himself, they finished whatever they were trying to do. Now I have to cut down on the numbers while I can and hope for reinforcements. I heard more gunshots. Maybe I can still break that dome of force-get those people out.
If he misses the Monster or b'gosh it resists his strike he will try to Defensive Throw it into the dome. If he hits the Monster away will turn attention to the dome.

Lily Pak
Slowly, consciousness creeps back in as the darkness recedes. Lily detects light, and then sound, little of it pleasant. As she stirs, her next sensation is pain - a dull, agonizing ache throughout every part of her body. It feels as though she has been playing tennis for 12 hours straight. At least she's not dead, though she's not entirely certain this isn't hell.
Rolling over, Lily cracks her eyes open. Next to her sits an older gentleman of obvious breeding. His clothing and manner scream of refinement; the cane he holds is beautiful...
Starting to sit up, she starts to say something to the man. Before she can even get the words out of her mouth, a bizarre figure in black steps forward. She turns and his horrific features seem to twist and swell in her vision, blotting out all else. The worm of fear which had been crawling in her gut swells to insane proportions, driving all possibility of rational thought from her head. Frozen in terror, meaningless sounds dribble from Lily's mouth as she stares wildly at her worst fears made manifest.
Something detracts Affrighter's attention, and the fear begins to seep away. Once again, Lily begins to gain awareness of her surroundings just in time to note the glow of sorcerous energy growing not 3 feet away. A voice screams, "... Nether Lord Comes!" and Lily's battered mind can no longer handle the strain. Screaming wordlessly, she begins to scrabble rapidly away, crawling, clawing, bestially fighting her way past the others to get away. In moments, she is pressed up against the energy barrier that separates her and the other victims from freedom. Impotently, she pounds and claws at the barrier, but it might as well be steel.
Unable to flee, she turns morbidly to watch the approach of death, her mind and body numb from the horror of her hopeless situation.

Brian Walsh
Seeing the arrival of The Steel Squadron Brian decides it best to leave handling super-villains to the professionals, and will head back to where he left Krystyna (being careful to avoid any stray blasts). Upon reaching her, he'll take her by the hand saying, "Come on, honey, time to go", he'll attempt to plot a path of egress that will lead them away from the conflict.
It's not paranoia when they're really out to get you!
Never in my life seeing anything like this before, I Hold My position On the second level, poke my head up to see whats going on. If I feel Im in danger I move, with hockey stick in hand, to a different spot along the ledge being ever watchful of incoming blasts, looking for a good hiding spot and wait for Danger to pass

Krystyna Walsh
The graphic scene of downed officers and security was almost too much for Krystyna to bear. Body parts were strewn all about her. The blood of the victims formed pools on the floor with some of it now decorating the displays in the surrounding area. It was a gorish setting right out of some hellish nightmare - complete with demonic looking creatures.
Krystyna held her breath as she watched Brian cautiously move towards the group of villains, advancing slowlying until he had made his way from the clothing shop to a nearby display. She could feel her heart beating faster within her chest as she prayed that he'd gone undetected.
Suddenly, Krystyna spotted from the corner of her eye what appeared to be a small spark near the forcefield. "What was that?" she thought aloud. Krystyna turned her head to confirm the sighting, only to notice that hers wasn't the only attention that had been caught by the mysterious flash. The scantily clad woman in the center of the circle quickly turned in the direction from which it had appeared, as did the creature Hellfire who was patrolling the area not far from Brian.
She watched anxiously as Brian took advantage of the situation and fired upon Hellfire while his back was turned. The bullet hit its target, but only to be shaken off as if it had been nothing more than an annoyance. The villain then turned around and stared intently at Brian. With but a gesture, several sharp glowing objects jut out from the tips of his fingers. An evil grin stretches across the creature's face as Krystyna in her horror immediately comprehends his intentions. She jumps to her feet and pounds on the glass crying out to Brian, "Look out!!" But Brian does not hear her words. In an instant, the thought of life without her husband flashes before her eyes.
Then just as suddenly, a deafening sound shatters the air, followed by a blast of light streaking past the store window in front of Krystyna. Startled, she falls to the the floor and clasps her hands to her ears. From her crouched position she gasps as the bolt of energy intervenes on her husband's behalf, striking his would-be murderer squarely in the chest and launching him backwards.
Confused yet grateful, Krystyna turns to see where the blast originated from. Arriving on the scene was none other than the famous Steel Squadron. Krys recognized them immediately from the many pictures of them she had seen on the news, along with the reports of their heroic deeds. With reinforcements now on the scene, and the near shock of almost losing her husband coming to fruition, Krystyna springs to her feet and rushes to the door to call out to him, "Brian! Get out of there!"
Her heart still beating wildly, Krystyna can do little else but wait for her husband to return to her.

Everyone's in, so its time for me to get to work on the next one!
This one should be pretty massive in size and will also introduce three new PC's along with a host of other characters.
Hopefully, I'll get it down over the weekend, but it may take into the early part of next week. Just have to see how it goes. You'll all get your E-mail notifications when it does go up.
Have a great weekend!
