In the great hall of the Duke of Corunglain’s fortress, the King's Advisors, the Council of Lords, discuss matters of great importance to the kingdom.
Sir Validar wrote:"It is a step to securing the area more strongly. There is much work yet to be done, many enemies still in control of lands within our borders and many defenses yet to be reclaimed and strengthened."
“Your success will not be complete until we have located the rest of the Guardian Shield and put it into place in Ardelphia. Even now we lack the resources to fully protect all of our borders. Assembling the Shield will secure that area and will reduce the number of troops needed there.”
Eventually the discussion turns to the rescue mission of the Duke of Corunglain and the attack on New Keln.
Sir Validar wrote:Others of the Lords volunteer for the mission, and Crysania makes it clear that her entire band will be along for the battle. Validar is certainly not thrilled with the idea of working together with Drakkimor and his band. They have not had the most harmonious of encounters as yet. "Who is to be in charge of this mission then?"
“As senior Knight, Sir Alon will be in charge of planning the rescue mission. I’ll leave the exact details in his capable hands. Lady Silvarn has graciously volunteered to transport the attack force inside the Stone House to New Keln. From her scouting efforts, she already knows the lay of the land and can get us close to the temple. We’ll have to proceed from there.”
The next topic is the discussion on the fate of Duchy of Elcadan. Lady Allonica suggests that those who border Elcadan, with the exception of Corunglain which has its own issues right now, split the land up. The suggestion brings a murmur of conversation from the council.
"I will assist you in this endeavor," Dame Sharl proclaims. "I will not tolerate demons walking feely within our borders."
"As shall I," Sir Alon declares.
"The assistance of both of you will be well-received, most certainly. You will honor us with your participation in these efforts."
“As Dame Sharl said,” Sir Alon states, “we cannot allow demons to dwell among us, especially in a city as large and as important as Elcadan.”
"You would have our assistance if you wish it," Crysania offers. "We spent much time in Elcadan over the years. To think that such a thing went unnoticed and unchecked is disheartening. A chance to help restore order and goodness there would be most welcomed."
"I am certain that there are many tasks which will be required in the coming months in regards to freeing and reclaiming all of Elcadan," Validar responds. He is not 100% certain that he wants to deal with Crysania and her group after their last encounter, but he is not dismissing it out of hand at this point either. They are powerful and they have many connections.
“Of course you’ll have my services as well”, Lady Salavarian states. “I have lived in Elcadan all my life and was just as equally fooled by the Devilles. I offer my home as a base of operations to your family, Sir Validar. We do not know what sort of surprises were left behind in the Duke’s residence. It is simply not safe to move in until they can be thoroughly and properly inspected.”
Sir Validar wrote:Validar will stand again to take the floor after the King has finished speaking. "Thank you for the confirmation of Baron Relon as the best person to take control of Elcadan. I can assure you that there is a strong enough infrastructure to deal with the issues that will arise. Pyris has already made efforts in conjunction with the House of Azrella to alleviate some of the suffering in Elcadan City and some of the towns bordering our lands. Twin Forks has already been cleansed of bandit activity and new businesses are being established there. Further, Lord Sherwood has many adventuring bands out to combat the bandits throughout Elcadan's borders. There are many plans which can be initiated to bring about a swift change to the city and the surrounding areas."
"Lord Radu, your concern may be a valid one to bring up, but it is without question within our abilities to resolve. We may be much smaller than Elcadan, but it is not a stable area. The Duke rules through fear and intimidation. The people will rise up and oppose the existing rulers once they are given enough hope that change can be made."
“The issue is not one about the skill and resolve of you and your troops, Sir Validar,” Lord Radu states. The Radu family is well known as a merchant clan in the inner kingdom. While they do not rule any lands, they carry considerable clout.
“The Duke, even if it were demons masquerading as such, was never the real power in Elcadan. It is the merchants who sit upon the City Council who made the real decisions. They’ve set up an economic system were they gain far more than their fair share. I am sure that you in Pyris are aware of this. The Duke was only a figurehead. The real power does remain and will need to be confronted.”
“I am confident that there will be people who will rise up against the current rulers, but do remember that much of the current military there swear their allegiance not to the crown, but to the rich merchants. They will not simply join your forces because you carry the banner of the King. I foresee a tumultuous transition in power. There will be much bloodshed and loss of life, but it is a necessary evil. The iron grip these merchants hold in Elcadan must be broken once and for all for the good of the kingdom.”
“That is why I suggested bolstering our troop compliment with those from other Lords, Sir Validar. So that you know the men under your command can be trusted.”
“Speaking for myself, I have no desire to gain lands to Lord over. First and foremost, I am a merchant. The opportunities for myself within my family's dealings are limited. However, in Elcadan there would be new opportunities for myself. Lady Teris speaks of the challenge of forging something that is her own, and not just handed down to her. I welcome that opportunity as well, but simply as a merchant, not a ruler.”
Sir Validar wrote:"It is however imperative, King Victor, that the effort to resettle and control Elcadan be completed with a concerted and organized effort. With numerous hands involved in the process, it will only be disorganized, disjointed, unfocused and entirely ineffective. I propose that Baron Relon work together with the Duke of Athenos. The lands will need to be reassigned and on the assumption that indeed the King would deem the him worthy and designate Baron Relon as the Duke of the area, then a minimum of two baronies would be established within his territory."
"There is the opportunity for a deserving unlanded lord to prove himself in a challenging situation, as Lady Teris suggested. Further, as the Duke of Athenos has lost one of his baronies on the far side of the Dire Swamp, he is surely incented to establish a barony of the lands he gains as well. There are plenty of opportunities for those who are worthy, but it must be a strong concerted effort and these new Barons must swear fealty to their new Lords, rather than be tied to other lands and other concerns. There will be no stability and only more danger from a fragmented and disorganized effort in this matter."
“There is wisdom to your words, Sir Validar,” the King answers, “but I think the task of taming Elcadan will be greater than you suspect. Lord Radu speaks truly in regards to who rules there now. You and your family will be facing a great challenge within town. It might be some time before you can fully control Elcadan and can even deal with the issue of the outlying towns and baronies. A concerted effort is highly desirable, but may not be possible right away.”
“I will approve new Baronies and Landed Lords if they are worthy of this status and if those who already control these lands are unworthy of keeping them. It is easy to suspect that all of the Elcadan Nobility is corrupt; that they had to either be part of the plot or at least aware of it. The truth of the matter is that we simply do not know how complicit they were. Each noble will have to be dealt with on a case by case basis.”
Sir Validar wrote:"It is easy to see an opportunity at another's expense. For those of you willing to join us in our quest to secure the Western Outer Lands of the Kingdom, we welcome you with open arms. However, it has often been the case that the concerns of the Outer Lands are not shared by those in power in the Inner Lands."
"The Duke of Corunglain has been nearly on his own against the tide of enemies which have rolled through his lands. We are a convenient buffer to the Inner Lands, but obviously one which has not required any attention nor effort to assist. Where were the troops sent to defend Corunglain or its territories and fortresses that protect the Kingdom from invading humanoids? Who gave assistance to the Lady Vera Ardel in order to try and free Ardelphia and the rest of her lands from these barbarian raiders and plunderers?" Validar will pause to let these words sink in to those present.
"Lord Corley, son of General Logan, has vowed to see Stone Ridge liberated. As has my companion, Sir Acerion. His grandmother has lobbied for assistance to assault Stone Ridge and reclaim Ardelphia for many long years and has yet to receive anything other than derision at worst and unconcern at best. We have dedicated ourselves to this task and will see it through to completion."
"At the risk of sounding arrogant in spouting the truth, I will dare to say that it is the Guardians of Light who have restored Rennydale and broken the hold of evil over it, with our allies and companions. We defeated the army assaulting Corunglain and with Lord Sharadin and Silvarn's help defeated the dragon, Ember, which led those horrible, invading forces. With the assistance of other adventuring bands and our own forces, we surely have enough conviction and ability to reclaim not only Stone Ridge and Elcadan, but all of the other fallen lands in Western Cynalon."
"Anyone who wishes to join the efforts to truly better our lands will be welcomed with open arms. Elcadan and her people deserve the best that we can offer to her. The individual concerns of each lord in the kingdom is secondary to the overall health of the Kingdom, and all of her citizens. Therefore a strong presence from those who are aware of the concerns and situations that have already been faced is needed, not a haphazard, unorganized effort, requiring far too much politics and far too many meetings to effectively help the people who live in these lands."
Validar will pause for a moment to let those words settle about the room. He is a bit forceful in his viewpoint, but this is not a time to be stonewalled or taken advantage of by any of the Inner Land lords as so often happened under the previous King's rule. On this matter, and out-numbered as he is, he will have to remain unwavering.
“Those orders not to help, more or less came from your former King, Sir Validar,” the King states. “He considered the lands west of the Streel to be a permanent loss and it a waste to send troops into those areas. In his eyes, such a thing would only serve to weaken the Inner Kingdom. It would not surprise me if he felt that another attack from Keln’s forces were forthcoming.”
“Do not confuse the lack of action from the Inner Kingdoms to be the same as not wishing to act. There are those who did wish to help. After all, much of the Outer Kingdom’s nobility has ties to those older families. There are indeed those who did turn a blind eye. I can assure you that none of those people are present here today. Each of us here wishes to see a united Kingdom, restored to greatness.”
“For far too long did we all dwell in the shadow of my father’s fears. Alas, he was the King and he did as he thought was best. Whatever kind of man my father is, he was still your liege and worthy of respect.”
“Much of what we do here today will not sit well with those content with the status quo. I fear that the decisions I make may tear the kingdom apart, but I see no other course of action. Things cannot continue on as they have, for eventually we all would suffer. The situation that I face, Sir Validar, is not that different from your challenge in Elcadan. There will be those who side with you; there will be those who will oppose you at every turn. But these things must be done, regardless of the consequences, as they will only make us stronger in the long run.”
Sir Validar wrote:"If I may propose a suggestion on how to divide these lands? As Restenford is recently recovered and also in need of continually defending her own borders, the Barony could receive more land and work to better securing the trade routes that pass through there."
"The Duchy of Athenos would receive all of the lands south of the Gray Hair River, the lands west of the Streel River up to the closest fork to Elcadan, and across the plain to include Elstrich. They would gain additional water trade route control as well as a rich area in Elstrich. This land would certainly be a desirable Barony in its own right."
"The lands remaining could be broken into perhaps two new Baronies, as Baron Relon would deem suitable, one of which would include Ansimont and perhaps Wrasseldown and the other to be Elcadan city and the surrounding territory. It would be smaller than current, but plenty desirable and valuable to a new Baron and more easy to control by focusing on the matters of the city and the renewal of the hell-hole that it currently is." Validar pauses for a moment as he points out the territories in question.
"Restenford is strengthened by not having to defend her borders against bandit activity as will Pyris and Athenos. We have struggled for years against this internal enemy and it is only right that we gain the fruits of that struggle. Athenos will be made more strong and increase their trade to northern areas. With the Trade Guilds of Elcadan under proper control, Athenos and every other land in the Kingdom will have greater opportunity to a fair market for their goods. Athenos will gain prime territory and wealth. Her navy will be vital in controlling the waterways around Elcadan. Further her Duchy will be a proper one again with an additional Barony under the Duke's control."
"Pyris has been a strong foe to the enemy that Elcadan has fielded. We have secured our borders and grown despite every attempt by the much larger Elcadan to weaken or destroy us. The battle will be fought by our soldiers and our commanders throughout the area. But Pyris will be up to the task. I have been preparing for war against Elcadan as long as I was able to lift a sword. My record of conquests speaks for itself. I will make certain that Baron Relon will be successful in this matter and with the offered help of such esteemed warriors such as the Dame Sharl and Sir Alon, we are assured of victory." Validar will look to his King for his assessment of the suggestion.
“I agree with what you propose in principle,” the King says. “I would prefer the existing Baronies to remain Baronies. As you suggest new ones can be added, provided they can made stable. It’s only an issue of population that has prevented other towns and baronies from cropping up.”
Sir Validar wrote:"I admit that I am without means to rapidly transport, having to rely on others. That said, if it were at all possible, I would like to accompany the King to Pyris to be present at the news to my father, if at all possible. Further, I would like to then travel to Gateway or have someone go in my stead to see if the Seekers are available for this mission in New Keln. I will need assistance in this however."
“All of us going to New Keln should accompany me to Pyris,” the King announces. “Then we can move to Karn’s Keep the next day. It will also give us time to formulate a plan of attack. I will meet with Duke Lucius after the battle in Athenos. It will give Baron Relon some time to prepare for his new post.”
“The Seekers have departed Gateway,” Lord Sharadin will state. “They are on the road to Kingsport, exact location is unknown. I believe you’ll find only the warrior called Blod in Gateway. He remained behind to be with his wife and child.”
The meeting beings to break up after that. Dame Sharl and Sir Alon will speak to Sir Acerion and Sir Validar.
“Congratulations again on your rise to Knighthood,” Sir Alon says. “I have with me your papers officially giving you that status and your membership into the Order of the Griffon. (The Cynalonian equivalent to the Knights of the Round Table.) Quarters for you have been prepared in the Order Hall in Alexandria, provided we ever have time to visit.”
“I haven’t used mine yet,” Dame Sharl will add with a chuckle. “Far too many things to do than hang around in the Order Hall. There are squires available should either of you desire to have them. A matter we can resolve during less trying times.”
Crysania will congratulate the both of you as well. “Congratulations, gentleman. Your status is well deserved and word of your deeds have spread. I wish you only great success in the future.”
Lady Allonica will come along and take Sir Validar away from the conversation.
Both Dame Sharl and Crysania will admire Sir Acerion’s new armor and both of the women can feel the power of their god radiate from it.
“Clearly you are a favorite in the Honorable Warrior’s eyes,” Crysania will say.
“Perhaps Noble Heironeous realized that his tool could be used to strike at the heart of our most vile enemy,” Dame Sharl wonders. “Perhaps that is why it has now resurfaced. Regardless, it will be most useful in the battle to come.”
You’ll have another hour to spend in Corunglain before moving on to Pyris with the King.
Here’s a bit more info on some of the other Council Lords.
Lord Ustav Vandevic hails from the village of Vandevicsny located on the west coast in the Inner Kingdom. Population is around 900. It is part of the Duchy of Halag. Ustav is grandson of the town’s Landed Lord. He is a minor mage.
Lord Tameron Antonic hails from Verge, a small town in the Duchy of Wulfwolde. He is the third son of the current Landed Lord of Verge.
Lady Teris Penhaligon is also from the Duchy of Wulwolde. Her father is the Baron of Penhaligon and brothers would be first inline to inherit the title.
Lord Mikel Vorloi is the third cousin to the Duke Vorloi from the Duchy of the same name. It lies to the south and east of the Inner Kingdom.
Lord Tanon Radu is a member of that famous merchant family. They arose to power in Kingsport. They are not landed.
Lord Lander Torenscu is from another noble family that currently lives in Alexandria. They are also merchants mostly, and do not control any lands.
Some of the info here contradicts the Cynalon file, namely the names of the Duchies. These are the correct ones.
"It is a step to securing the area more strongly.
Validar pauses as he hears those words. He had not considered that it was up to them entirely to locate the Guardian Shield. But in truth there may only be one more part to locate. While it has not yet been confirmed, the word is that the Mystran portion of the Shield is close to recovery and therefore, they just need to locate the Azrellian one.
"We will do our best to locate the remaining section of the Shield. Is there any word as to the recovery of the Mystran Shield? Are there any clues or legends about the location of the Shield of Life? Has the Order of Azrella been able to offer any information on this artifact?"
---------------------------------------------------------------
Eventually the discussion turns to the rescue mission of the Duke of Corunglain and the attack on New Keln.
"Very good. We look to your experience and your skill in leading us, Sir Alon. The Seekers had some combat with the Hextor scum and I look forward to continuing the battle with those foul enemies."
"That is acceptable to me, most certainly." Validar is happy to hear that he will be home for part of a day. He may not have much time to offer his assistance in the plans to claim Elcadan, but at least he will be there at the beginning.
“The Seekers have departed Gateway,” Lord Sharadin will state. “They are on the road to Kingsport, exact location is unknown. I believe you’ll find only the warrior called Blod in Gateway. He remained behind to be with his wife and child.”
"That is unfortunate," Validar will reply. "I would not discount requesting the services of my comrade, Blod. He is a strong warrior and full of courage. I am certain his sword would prove useful in the assault."
----------------------------------------------------------
The next topic is the discussion on the fate of Duchy of Elcadan. “As Dame Sharl said,” Sir Alon states, “we cannot allow demons to dwell among us, especially in a city as large and as important as Elcadan.”
"I agree. The situation is a dire one, but one that I am certain we shall be successful in taming."
"Indeed. I certainly would not recommend trying to establish a base in the Duke's residency, especially considering the length of time that it has inhabited the demons. Thank you for the offer, Lady Salavarian. I am certain that Baron Relon will welcome your kind and useful offer."
-------------------------------------------------------------
“The issue is not one about the skill and resolve of you and your troops, Sir Validar,” Lord Radu states.
"We are aware that the merchants control Eldcadan, the Duchy and even beyond to a degree. The may have the demons working for them perhaps. Regardless, it does not change what we need to accomplish. In truth, with the Duke out of the picture, it may actually simplify the process."
"I would have expected many of the soldiers of Elcadan to be ready to do battle for their leaders, whether the Duke, the Merchant Guild, or someone else. I do not expect the soldiers to join en masse. While some of them might, it is the rebelling of the generally populace, the poor of Elcadan that can be relied on to assist in this overthrow."
"Now, do not get me wrong, I am not suggesting a peasant army to rise up and do our battling for us, but certainly, there will be a contingent of militia that will be prepared to give their lives to strike at the oppression they have felt from Elcadan's rulers. And in some ways, by having the Merchant Guild as our main enemy, there are more fronts available to combat them, than simply militarially. I am sure you know, as a merchant, the trouble it would cause if you were unable to do business with your neighbors and all the shipping lanes suddenly became closed."
"This battle to reclaim Elcadan and bring her back to the Cynalon fold will be waged on many levels and in many ways. It will certainly require considerable assistance of allies that can accomplish what needs to be done. I am sure that there will be bloodshed, but it is my hope to minimize it. I think there are ways to combat this enemy with more than just troops which will be much more effective."
“That is why I suggested bolstering our troop compliment with those from other Lords, Sir Validar. So that you know the men under your command can be trusted.”
"I agree that we will need assistance from those allies that are seeking to commit to the area. I however will recommend that simply taking troops from anyone for the sake of having them and then having to appease them later is a trouble we do not need to indulge in."
A quick smile graces Sir Validar's face as he hears these words. More of a plan begins to form as Lord Radu speaks. "There would indeed be plenty of opportunities for one such as yourself, Lord Radu. There will be a vaccuum of power in the merchant sector that will need to be filled. I am fairly certain that the merchants in power will not give up that power, nor will they be kind to thoughts of operating under our new system."
"I recommend that Lord Radu begin to make plans to seize and control the overland routes of caravans heading south from any of Elcadan's territory. Similarly, Pyris can halt all Elcadan trade at the border as well. In time, we can get Duke Lucius to put more ships patrolling the rivers from Elcadan and close her up in that manner."
"While I am certain that the Merchants will have quite deep coffers, the surprise actions, if done quickly and without warning will certainly hurt them in their purses. We will need to have writs of control signed by the King for each of the forces set up as blockades. I would expect the caravans to begin to have guards and for the merchants to try to disguise themselves as soon as word gets out, but it should take some time for that to happen. For now, the Guild controls the bandits in Elcadan and therefore the Guild caravans are less guarded, as they know they are 'protected' from them. We can use that to our advantage in the short run."
"My King, no disrespect intended, but I have been preparing for a conflict with Elcadan since I was able to lift a sword. I do know what the challenge will be and in truth had expected under our previous King to have to confront this enemy of Cynalon on our own and without any additional assistance. That may be why I am hesitant to accept outside help. However, with proper allies, the task will be reduced in measure considerably."
"I would not recommend attacking Elcadan city directly initially. They are large, but they also need the large number of troops there to keep order in the poorer sections of the city. If we control the outer baronies and lands and deny them access to their trade which runs the city, they will either shrivel or be forced to mount an attack against us. That would only serve to split their forces and allow us to defeat them more quickly."
"If the Duke of Athenos is able to control the rivers to the south and make contact with Elstrich and secure her, then Elcadan trade will be closed to the south. To the north, the Duchy of Corunglain is currently beset by war and while they may not be able to secure those borders, the oppotunity to trade there is limited."
"To the east they will be blocked by Pyris and the mountains. If Lord Radu can secure the caravan routes to the south, we will have enclosed them in a noose which offers few escape routes, other than by magick. That will be another matter to address certainly. Addiitonally if Elstrich and Ansimont can be swayed to our side, that will be a much easier overall task."
"Furthermore, I would like to nominate Lady Teris Penhaligon to be deigned as a Baroness in the new territory. Certainly, we must trust the judgement of the King in forming the Lords Council and direct allies in this matter are certainly needed. I would recommend the lands that control Twin Forks and Hendry. Pyris has already begun establishing a stronghold there and bandit activity is reduced. Further, we could help to limit the export of timber from there to Elcadan immediately, which with Pyris' boycott would also put Elcadan in a pinch in regards to both finished wooden goods and raw materials."
"The area that was only part of Elcadan Duchy and not a seperate barony can certainly be split into two territories. My suggestion is to take control of these outlying areas as quickly as possible and squeeze Elcadan from all sides. With Lady Teris and troops under her command, she can secure this new territory and deny it to Elcadan. If we strike in multiple areas, within the city and without; in surrounding baronies and the lands we control; with economic sanctions as well as military might, we can certainly reclaim this wayward land. That is what I mean by a concerted effort. Many prongs, but controlled from one source, one focus. Each working in conjunction with the other as direct allies or subordinates. Not as various lords from disparate lands all seeking to secure their own well-being before the territory."
"Pyris and Athenos have direct concerns in these areas. As would any new Barons established. Lord Radu has already made it clear that he would have considerable interest in the established area. These are the type of people who need to work together. This is the concerted effort this war will require, my King."
"Who can say what the King was truly thinking. With all due respect, the impression we have gotten is that the King's decisions were disjointed and confusing in recent years. We had the plans to attack Keln and they were called off. The situations in Corunglain. The lack of concern about Elcadan and banditry. Perhaps it was all a case of overwhelming concern about Keln and the dangers there. Still it seems to me that the Frontier was becoming controlled more and more by Cynalon."
Validar bites his lip for a moment. He can see that the King is trying to be diplomatic. "All I can say is that as a citizen and lord of the Outer Kingdom, we expected more. We will oppose those who did not assist us at every turn. Soon the Outer Kingdom here in the West will be secure and strong and then things throughout the Kingdom will be different."
“For far too long did we all dwell in the shadow of my father’s fears. Alas, he was the King and he did as he thought was best. Whatever kind of man my father is, he was still your liege and worthy of respect.”
"Be certain my King that my loyalty to Cynalon is unquestionable, as is my desire to assist in her return to greatness. It is difficult to understand why we were put in the position that we were submitted to and difficult to reconcile the seeming lack of concern for the citizens of the Outer Kingdom. That time is now past and we are ready to move forward."
"Indeed, I agree with that. Anyone associated with Elcadan for one will be quite displeased at the changes that are coming. As will anyone who has dealings that take advantage of the Kingdom being fractured and fragmented. It has long been our contention that economic deals between Elcadan and some of the Inner Lands were designed specifically to harm Elcadan's neighbors. They hold a strategic location in dealing with the core of Cynalon."
"We are by your side, My King. Everything we do will make Cynalon stronger. Those who side with us will enjoy the honor and glory that comes from our actions. Those who oppose us will be swept aside like wheat before the scythe. The enemies may be strong, they may be many, they may be entrenched and they may even be a mystery, but they will not long oppose us."
"Many thanks, Sir Alon. It is an honor to be officially recognized as a knight of Cynalon," Validar says, accepting the official Writ of Patency. "And it is also an honor to join the Order of the Griffon. It has been a goal of mine since my youth to be recognized as worthy of such a decoration."
"I do not know when I will have the opportunity to visit those halls. Certainly, it is an honor to be a part of the Order. There is indeed so much to accomplish that it seems I have rarely been home in several years."
"I will have to think on the subject of a squire. I have a hereld in mind already however. Who are the subjects who would qualify as squires?" (And more importantly, is this an NPC or a henchman?)
Crysania will congratulate the both of you as well. “Congratulations, gentleman. Your status is well deserved and word of your deeds have spread. I wish you only great success in the future.”
"Thank you, Crysania of Heironeous," Validar will respond simply. "We work to better the Kingdom."
Lady Allonica will come along and take Sir Validar away from the conversation.
"Greetings, my lady, it is wonderful to gaze upon your beauty once again," Validar takes the hand of his beloved and the two step away from the others.
"I trust you will be accompanying us to Pyris, my dear. But tell me, how did the situation go in Elcadan? Its sounds like it was quite the surprise, but undoubtedly, with the King's presence, you were not in any serious danger. Still I hope you manage to stay away from such situations in the future."
Validar will spend what time he can with Lady Allonica until it is time to leave. He is looking forward to the trip to Pyris and the opportunity to be there when Pyris is awarded the task of reclaiming vile Elcadan. He is very proud for his father.
Acerion sits through the remainder of the meeting a silent observer. Rather than feeling awkward and out of place for lacking such political knowledge, he turns it to an advantage. He listens closely to all the points and counter-points, attempting to remember each name mentioned and each stance presented. Although starting well behind the others, meetings such as this are valuable learning opportunities.
"Thank you, Sir Alon," Acerion replies, "a true honor it is to be deemed worthy enough to join the Order. As far as the matter of squires, it will definitely be one worth considering during a more appropriate time"
"It would be good to return to Alexandria, even if just for a short time," Acerion adds. "My remaining family is there, of course, and I often wonder how they are faring so far from our true home."
Crysania will congratulate the both of you as well. “Congratulations, gentleman. Your status is well deserved and word of your deeds have spread. I wish you only great success in the future.”
"Thank you for such high praise, Crysania," Acerion replies, "I feel we shall all see great success with the fine gathering that is assembled here."
"It is an honor to be favored by the noble Heironeous," Acerion says sincerely. "More than I could have ever prayed for has already been granted me. It is because of this that I shall always strive to prove such blessings were not bestowed upon me in error."
“Perhaps Noble Heironeous realized that his tool could be used to strike at the heart of our most vile enemy,” Dame Sharl wonders. “Perhaps that is why it has now resurfaced. Regardless, it will be most useful in the battle to come.”
"That is quite possible," Acerion says simply. "The timing is quite fortuitous, regardless of the true reasons. I shall not allow the opportunity for its use to pass us by."
Sir Validar wrote:"We will do our best to locate the remaining section of the Shield. Is there any word as to the recovery of the Mystran Shield? Are there any clues or legends about the location of the Shield of Life? Has the Order of Azrella been able to offer any information on this artifact?"
"No word on the Mystran portion of the Shield," Lady Salavarian answers. "We suspect it to be within the ruins of the Tower of Magic, but cannot be sure. It has occurred to me that it might also reside in a recently reclaimed Temple to Mystra near the great swamp. A pair of young ladies recently liberated it and are working to restore the temple and its library."
"I passed on our request to Elspeth, but I haven't been home much as of late to receive her answer."
Sir Validar wrote:"That is unfortunate," Validar will reply. "I would not discount requesting the services of my comrade, Blod. He is a strong warrior and full of courage. I am certain his sword would prove useful in the assault."
"We'll see if we can locate him in time to join the mission," Lord Sharadin states. "I might be able to find others to join our cause in Gateway."
The Council and the King listens to Sir Validar's plans on how to deal with the Merchants of Elcadan.
"You and your father have my support in any plan that you propose to bring order where there is none", the King says. "My only concern is the speed at which this change takes place. A long, protracted change-over only harms those we wish to protect."
The others involved agree to meet after the Hextor raid to finalize plans.
Sir Validar wrote:"Who can say what the King was truly thinking.
"That is not too far from the truth, Sir Validar, so no insult was taken. My father was indecisive and put his faith in advisors who seemed more interested in keeping their holdings in the Inner Lands safe and let the Outer Lands serve as a buffer. The situation was not unlike a turtle hiding in its shell for protection, only putting its head out to look around every so often."
"As you say, Sir Validar, these are issues of the past. We need to put aside our differences and work towards a United Kingdom, and confront those who do not wish to see such a thing come to pass."
The main meeting breaks up and there is some time to wait until the move to Castle Pyris.
Sir Validar wrote:"Many thanks, Sir Alon.
I have a herald in mind already however. Who are the subjects who would qualify as squires?"
Sir Acerion wrote:"Thank you, Sir Alon," Acerion replies, "a true honor it is to be deemed worthy enough to join the Order. As far as the matter of squires, it will definitely be one worth considering during a more appropriate time"
"The choice of retainers is yours. Those who aspire to be squires are much like yourselves in your younger days, young lords needing guidance and a firm hand. They petitioned the Order and were put on a list. Being new knights, you two are the most obvious candidates for retainers. There is no rush on this. I was merely making you aware of the situation.”
(And more importantly, is this an NPC or a henchman?)
They would be henchmen, under the PC's control. Although the specifics of the character can be worked out between us, its up to the PC to handle their squire's actions.
Sir Acerion wrote:"That is quite possible," Acerion says firmly. "The timing is quite fortuitous, regardless of the true reasons. I shall not allow the opportunity for its use to pass us by."
“With the power of Heironeous we have gathered here, I am confident that we can deal a crippling defeat to our arch rivals,” Dame Sharl declares.
Sir Validar wrote:"Greetings, my lady, it is wonderful to gaze upon your beauty once again," Validar takes the hand of his beloved and the two step away from the others.
Lady Allonica will smile in return as you walk off. "The days we have been separated have been long indeed, milord."
Sir Validar wrote:"I trust you will be accompanying us to Pyris, my dear. But tell me, how did the situation go in Elcadan? Its sounds like it was quite the surprise, but undoubtedly, with the King's presence, you were not in any serious danger. Still I hope you manage to stay away from such situations in the future."
"It would be my honor and pleasure to accompany you to Pyris. Indeed, you will have my services as you need them in the days to come. A restored Elcadan will also be a boon to my family as well, so there is considerable interest there.”
“Truth be told, the King's attack on the demoness in disguise all happened so fast, that I didn’t even realize what happened until after the fact. Putting myself in harm’s way is not something I strive to do.”
A short time later, those going on the rescue mission along with Lady Allonica depart for Pyris. The arrival of the King and a large contingent of nobility were not expected. A meeting with the Baron and Baroness is quickly arranged and the situation explained. There is much to discuss this evening.
Not quite as long this time out. Feel free to discuss matters with any of the others present here. Validar’s family will wish to hear news of his latest exploits and Lady Vera awaits word on the situation in Ardelphia.
"I see," Sir Validar responds. Apparently, we are not as close to recoveriing the Mystran Shield as it appeared to be, if the location is not even certain. "Hopefully, we will be able to identify the other Shields' locations and recover them as early as possible."
-----------------------------------------------
"That is unfortunate," Validar will reply. "I would not discount requesting the services of my comrade, Blod. He is a strong warrior and full of courage. I am certain his sword would prove useful in the assault."
"We'll see if we can locate him in time to join the mission," Lord Sharadin states. "I might be able to find others to join our cause in Gateway."
"Certainly, the warrior Blod would indeed be a helpful addition if he is available. If there are others as well, I think we should not discount them."
--------------------------------------------------
The Council and the King listens to Sir Validar's plans on how to deal with the Merchants of Elcadan.
"You and your father have my support in any plan that you propose to bring order where there is none", the King says. "My only concern is the speed at which this change takes place. A long, protracted change-over only harms those we wish to protect."
"We will do our best to ensure that the situation is handled with the least amount of blood-shed and the least amount of danger to the citizens who live in Elcadan. Unfortunately, a quick strike will be more bloody than a protracted campaign. The goal is to minimize the combat at the same time we work to control the economic strategy. It will be a challenging situation."
The others involved agree to meet after the Hextor raid to finalize plans.
"If all goes well, we will have enemies at two sides of the Kingdom defeated before long."
-----------------------------------------------------
"That is not too far from the truth, Sir Validar, so no insult was taken.
"That certainly is the way that those of us in the Outer Lands saw things happening. We were unable to be as politically successful as some of the Inner Lords were extremely close to the King. It left us almost as outsiders."
"It is good to know that we have a King who is interested in a united Kingdom and not a condensed one. The Outer Lands have much value in more than just as a security buffer to our enemies. I am sure I speak for all the Western Lands when I say that we welcome the assistance and the alliance of the members of this council."
-----------------------------------------------------------
"The choice of retainers is yours. Those who aspire to be squires are much like yourselves in your younger days, young lords needing guidance and a firm hand. They petitioned the Order and were put on a list. Being new knights, you two are the most obvious candidates for retainers. There is no rush on this. I was merely making you aware of the situation.”
"It is a situation that could prove useful. We will have need of more knights to fill out the ranks of the Order and to help the Kingdom not only stabilize its existing and lost holdings, but to expand them out as well. It is my opinion that if you are not growing, then you are dying. There is room for growth both internally and externally."
"So, please tell me: who are the candidates?" Validar is aware that there will be a pressing need to assemble a military staff to handle the battles that he will be engaged in. A squire may not be ready for all the duties he needs immediately, but having someone trained in his style can only be a benefit, he thinks.
------------------------------------------------------
"Greetings, my lady, it is wonderful to gaze upon your beauty once again," Validar takes the hand of his beloved and the two step away from the others.
Lady Allonica will smile in return as you walk off. "The days we have been separated have been long indeed, milord."
"It has seemed like weeks, my Lady. There is so much happening now. But everything seems to take second place when you are at my side."

“Truth be told, the King's attack on the demoness in disguise all happened so fast, that I didn’t even realize what happened until after the fact. Putting myself in harm’s way is not something I strive to do.”
"I am quite pleased to hear that, Gabriella. Your skills will be very helpful in the political dealings, especially with the Baron of Ansimont and perhaps that of Elstrich as well. As for the economic situation, there will become a void in the place that the Marchant Guild controls. I am certain that your family will have many opportunities to increase their influence in the area, especially considering that Pyris soon have control of much of that territory now."
"It does my heart glad to know that you were not physically threatened. Even the Pits of Hell would not halt my wrath were anyone to dare harm you."
----------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------
Before long, the group appears in the courtyard of Castle Pyris. The white marble statues of Validar and Valerian . As the guards approach, Sir Validar steps forward to assure them that all is well.
"Greetings, soldiers of Pyris. All hail and welcome to the new King of Cynalon!" Validar will gesture grandly to indicate the new King Victor.
Validar sees Sergeant Kerwan quickly assemble the men in ranks as they salute their King. "Please inform the Baron and the Baroness that we have many guests. We will not be remaining long, but I trust everyone will be pleased to witness proper Pyrisian hospitality."
Validar then turns to the King and the assembled group. "On behalf of the entire Barony of Pyris, it is my honor to welcome you to our land. I am certain the Baron will be quite pleased to receive your audience." Validar will then lead the way to the main Keep.
Along the way, he will have motion one of the soldiers to him. "Locate the Castle Guard know as Dellant, son of Sir Corwin. Have him ready to speak to me when our meeting with the Baron is completed." Other soldiers come to take his shield and Validar tucks his helm under his arm.
Together, the group proceeds through the Keep to the Main Hall.
The guards in the main hall salute as the group passes. Sir Validar leads the way past the guards, decked out in their blue and green uniforms. Each of the men hold halberds. At the far end of the Main Hall, more guards are stationed.
Validar returns the men's salute. "The Baron is ready for you," one of the guards says as the doors are opened.
"Very good," Validar replies and he looks back to the King and the rest of the assemblage. Validar steps into the hall and sees that the Baron and Baroness are seated at the far end of the Courtroom. There are a few more guards than would normally be present, as well as the Master of the Guard, Parnell. "Welcome King Victor to the Hall of Pyris." Validar will salute the King and allow him to pass.
The meeting in Corunglain begins to wind down. Silvarn will speak with both Sir Acerion and Sir Validar.
"Good to see you both again," the silver haired elf-maiden will say. "I will be departing shortly to explore the area around Fort Fletcher and will be stopping there. Are there any messages you wish me to pass on to your comrades?"
"I've provided Sir Alon with information about the Hextor Temple. It will help you get your plans started in my absence. I’ll catch up with you again at Karn’s Keep."
Retainers:
"So, please tell me: who are the candidates?" Validar is aware that there will be a pressing need to assemble a military staff to handle the battles that he will be engaged in. A squire may not be ready for all the duties he needs immediately, but having someone trained in his style can only be a benefit, he thinks.
Sir Alon will fish through his pockets and finally pull out a list. "I have a dozen names thus far. In no particular order, Dylen Wocken, Maxalla Trigostas, Chad Alonius, Par Thanar, Jocasta Demendria, Orwyn Mauntea, Ansel Attleson, Vicker Umbarth, Lucian Hyraksos, Augusta Prothemian, Aldo Tisza, and Sara Ebonov. I am sure there are others who have applied since I've last been to the Order Hall."
(Maxalla, Jocasta, Augusta, and Sara are female. The Trigostas, Alonius, Thanar, Demendria, Hyraksos, Prothemian, Tisza, and Ebonov families are all of the inner kingdom. The Wocken, Mauntea, Attleson, and Umbarth's are all outer kingdom families.)
"If you are interested in pursuing this, we can set up interviews with the perspective candidates."
Gabriella:
Sir Validar wrote:"I am certainly looking forward to having you by my side as long as possible."
Lady Gabriella will coyly smile. "Why Sir Validar, that almost sounds like a proposal."
Sir Validar wrote:"I am quite pleased to hear that, Gabriella. Your skills will be very helpful in the political dealings, especially with the Baron of Ansimont and perhaps that of Elstrich as well. As for the economic situation, there will become a void in the place that the Merchant Guild controls. "It does my heart glad to know that you were not physically threatened. Even the Pits of Hell would not halt my wrath were anyone to dare harm you."
"We all have our roles to play in this endeavor. Mine normally does not include violence of any kind. I prefer to leave that to those more skilled in such things. I solve my problems with words and compromises. And I can be fleet of feet should the need arise.”
Lady Salavarian teleports the King and those going on the rescue mission to Pyris. The Stone House is opened up and the royalty and nobility come forth. At Sir Validar's direction, the guards are rounded up and the staff alerted to the new arrivals.
Validar sees Sergeant Kerwan quickly assemble the men in ranks as they salute their King. "Please inform the Baron and the Baroness that we have many guests. We will not be remaining long, but I trust everyone will be pleased to witness proper Pyrisian hospitality."
"At once, milord!"
Validar then turns to the King and the assembled group. "On behalf of the entire Barony of Pyris, it is my honor to welcome you to our land. I am certain the Baron will be quite pleased to receive your audience." Validar will then lead the way to the main Keep.
"We are pleased to be here, Sir Validar," the King responds. "Pyrisian hospitality is well known throughout the kingdom."
The procession is shown into the Baron's Courtroom. The herald announces everyone, and that alone takes a great deal of time. The Baron and Baroness come forth to greet the King and his entourage. Pleasantries are exchanged before the telling of most recent events begins.
The attack on Corunglain is covered, as well as the Guardians' role in its liberation. How the new King assumed power with his father's blessings and later Knighted Acerion, Corley, and Validar. The situation with Elcadan is covered as well as the identity of the new Duke. The whole thing comes as a surprise to everyone in the courtroom.
"Long has the stench of Elcadan been borne on our breezes," Baron Relon states. "I am glad that finally something is to be done about it. Words fail me as to this great honor you have accorded me, my liege. I swear that I and my family shall restore Elcadan to a place of greatness. Once more it shall be the shining jewel of the west!"
From there things break down into numerous smaller conversations and gatherings. Sir Validar’s parents will congratulate him on attaining Knight status. His mother will hug him as will his younger sister, although the Lady Rachel will whisper, “Show off” into his ear.
Baron Relon will have further conversations with the King and those others who have pledged their aid with the Elcadan situation. “We have much to accomplish in this task. Organization will be paramount to our success.”
Elsewhere, Sir Alon will hold a briefing on the Hextor Raid.
“Since our preparation time is limited and we have yet to even see our target, we’ll keep the tactics simple. Lady Silvarn has provided us with a rough sketch of what we will be encountering. Our target lies near the middle of town and is essentially a fortress. However coupled with the Lady Silvarn’s skills and our possessing the Stone House, that will not be a problem. The maiden has indicated to me that she can get us past the walls and into the fortress itself. There seems to be a surprising lack of magical protections in this temple which will make our task easier.”
“Their vile god does not grant his followers those kind of magicks”, Crysania explains. “Their spell selection is geared towards battle. Employing such protections would be a sign of cowardice amongst their kind. No, what defenses they possess will be guards, magical constructions, or summoned creatures.”
“That does make things simpler,” Sir Alon agrees. “It is difficult to make battle plans when defensive magicks can be such a wild card. At any rate, having foes to fight instead of enchanted traps is fine with me.”
“Lady Silvarn will deposit us inside the temple as far as she can go. From there we’ll need to make our way to the lowest level of the temple. Our enemy calls the bottom most level the ‘Hellpit’. This is where we believe the prisoners are and where the ceremony will be held. We fight our way down. Free the prisoners and then transfer them into the Stone House. One of the mages will then teleport the Stone House to safety.”
“It is my feeling that how long we linger will depend on the strength of the enemy. If they fall easily before us then we should continue to attack until they are eradicated. If their forces are overpowering, then we should withdraw as soon as we are able. I will not pass up an opportunity to land a devastating blow to the enemy, but will not foolishly risk all of our lives in a hopeless conflict either.”
“As I see it, we do not know the exact route to reach the Hellpit. Therefore, we’ll need to predetermine how our forces will be divided. I assume that there are multiple paths to reach our goal. Having predetermined splits will just speed up our invasion. This needs to be a fast moving mission. The longer we linger, the more organized our resistance will be. Your thoughts?”
Later that evening, Sir Validar will find Dellant waiting for him. “You summoned me, milord?”
Lady Vera will corner Sir Acerion. “Pardon me, Sir Acerion, but I was curious how the Guardians’ mission in the north lands was faring. I tried to speak to Sir Validar but he seems to be in one meeting after another. Have you any news?”
The Meeting in Corunglain: "Good to see you both again," the silver haired elf-maiden will say. "I will be departing shortly to explore the area around Fort Fletcher and will be stopping there. Are there any messages you wish me to pass on to your comrades?"
"Very good, Silvarn. Your assistance in that area will prove to be most beneficial. If you are stopping at Fort Fletcher, then indeed information will be useful to pass on to the Guardians there."
"Please tell them of the situation here regarding the attack on the Hextor Temple and the situation with Elcadan. There is now much to accomplish. The King has charged us with recovering Elcadan, as well as holding Fort Fletcher, assisting in the recovery of Hammerfall and the attack to reclaim Ardelphia. We will return to Fletcher when the attack in New Keln is complete; I would imagine within a day or two at least. Also any information on their progress and situation would be appreciated."
"I've provided Sir Alon with information about the Hextor Temple. It will help you get your plans started in my absence. I’ll catch up with you again at Karn’s Keep."
"Thank you for your contnued assistance, Silvern. We look forward to seeing you again very soon."
----------------------------------------------------------
Potential Squires: "So, please tell me: who are the candidates?" Validar is aware that there will be a pressing need to assemble a military staff to handle the battles that he will be engaged in. A squire may not be ready for all the duties he needs immediately, but having someone trained in his style can only be a benefit, he thinks.
Sir Alon will fish through his pockets and finally pull out a list. "I have a dozen names thus far. I am sure there are others who have applied since I've last been to the Order Hall."
"If you are interested in pursuing this, we can set up interviews with the perspective candidates."
"I am indeed interested, my friend. I am familiar with some of the families you mention. I have heard of the Wocken, Mauntea and Umbarth families, but I do not know of the individuals you mention. I have heard of Sara Ebonov; is she not a cousin of Lord Torenscu? I have even met Lucian Hyraskos. His older brother, Dmitros, was a commander in the Frontier as well."
"I would like to review the criteria for the individuals and make a short list of potential candidates. I think Ebonov and Hyraskos will certainly be on the list and we can add from there."
-----------------------------------------------------
Gabriella: "I am certainly looking forward to having you by my side as long as possible."
Lady Gabriella will coyly smile. "Why Sir Validar, that almost sounds like a proposal."
Validar is actually taken by surprise for the first time that he can remember. He opens his mouth to say something, but at first nothing comes out. Finally he finds his words. "It is indeed an idea that has filled my thoughts on many nights, especially lately." Validar will take both of her hands in his and turn to face her. "The Kingdom is in turmoil and there are many changes taking place. We are both needed to secure Cynalon's future, but I would be the happiest man in the Kingdom if my personal future included you as my wife."
"As you said, we each have our roles. My role seems to be steeped in violence, but while words and compromise are extremely useful in the political arena, we have many enemies who are not swayed by such abilities.
Jallarzi teleports the group to Pyris and they all disembark. Quickly Validar gives orders to the guards and the group proceeds to the Baron's Courtroom. It is with great pride that Validar announces the King's arrival before the Baron and Baroness.
The court heralds announce everyone officially and pleasantries are exchanged. Sir Validar takes Lady Allonica by the hand as they approach his parents.
"Baron and Baroness, may I present to you, the Lady Gabriella Allonica. She is a fellow member of the new King's Council of Lords." Validar can hardly suppress a smile while he speaks, despite trying to follow formalities as much as possible. "Lady Allonica is a superb negotiator and will be available for our future needs." Seeing the confused look on the faces of the Baron and Baroness, Validar quickly adds. "I am getting ahead of myself somewhat I am afraid. All will be made clear soon enough."
As the initial pleasantries and meetings are completed, the true matters at hand begin. Eventually the news of the new Duke is confirmed and the members of the Pyrisian courtroom are stunned in silence. Validar will step up to his parents and proudly state, "Citizens of Pyris, all hail our new Duke and Duchess!" The guards and court attendants break out in a cheer that takes some minutes before it dies down again.
"Indeed it shall. Elcadan will be welcomed into the new Duchy of Pyris with open arms. We will have much to accomplish and many enemies to defeat along the way. But I am certain that the entire citizenry of this land will assist in the important task that we have been charged with."
---------------------------------------------------
From there things break down into numerous smaller conversations and gatherings. Sir Validar’s parents will congratulate him on attaining Knight status. His mother will hug him as will his younger sister, although the Lady Rachel will whisper, “Show off” into his ear.
"Thank you for your words. I am most pleased to have been honored as such by the new King." To his sister, he will add, "Not to worry, it seems you will now have plenty of opportunities to prove your own mettle. We have a monumental task before us in securing all of Elcadan and Ansimont. There is much to be done."
Later at a moment which is appropriate, Lord Validar will lean in and whisper to his mother, "It is not official as yet, but the lovely Lady Allonica is the one I intend to marry, if she will have me. I just thought that the Duchess should know such news."
-------------------------------------------------------
Baron Relon will have further conversations with the King and those others who have pledged their aid with the Elcadan situation. “We have much to accomplish in this task. Organization will be paramount to our success.”
"Indeed that is the truth. When we return from our mission in Keln, there is much to finalize and much work to begin. I have already nominated the Lady Teris Penhaligon as one to control lands currently part of Elcadan. I would suggest a territory to include Twin Forks, where we have already made plans to improve the defenses and improve the economy of the area. The King has the utmost in confidence in her abilities, as she is also a member of the Lords Council. What say you, father?"
"Further it is important to begin the economic conflict with the Elcadan Merchant Guilds as soon as possible. We must begin to seize the cargo of Merchant Guild caravans as soon as they enter Pyris borders. I would suggest doubling the light horse squadrons that patrol our borders, as well."
"The money and goods can be redirected to the efforts to combat Elcadans troops. We will need to hire mercenary troops certainly to fill out our contingent of soldiers, especially until we receive forces from our allies."
Sir Alon begins the discussion with information about the Temple and the means with which to infiltrate the Stronghold. Crysania confirms that the defenses should be straight-forward.
"Indeed it has been my experience that what Crysania speaks is the truth. While we have not attacked a Stronghold as significant as the Main Temple of New Keln, we have seen that the Hextorites do rely on guards and creatures."
The goal is to work down to the lowest level of the complex, rescue the prisoners and defeat the sacrifice. Sir Alon recommends splitting the group up.
"I would agree with that assessment. It is much easier to halt the advances of a single group than it is to halt three individual groups. That is my recommendation for the numbers that we need. Each group should have roughly the same numbers and same composition, as we do not have separate tasks for each of the groups, rather each has the same singular goal."
"Sir Alon is correct that we must move quickly. If we have a group that can be assembled from the more speedy individuals, all the better. That would allow one of the slower groups to more strongly focus on combat and tieing up the enemy's forces. It will surely be a bloody and dangerous fight, but one with an opportunity to not only rescue the Duke of Corunglain, but also deal a powerful blow to the souless slugs who seek to oppose us."
-------------------------------------------------------
Later that evening, Sir Validar will find Dellant waiting for him. “You summoned me, milord?”
"Indeed I did, Dellant son of Sir Corwin. Do you recall the conversation we had when you carried by shield for me? The King has granted me the priviledge of knightood and therefore, I am in need of a hereld as I mentioned. I would like you to be my hereld, Dellant. Do you accept?"
--------------------------------------------------------
At some point before they go, Sir Validar will make a point to locate Lady Ardel and have some words with her. It would be quite rude to not speak with her and provide her with information on their task, while he is here. Certainly she will be anxious to hear any news.
--------------------------------------------------------
Sir Validar will take time to meet privately with his father, the newly appointed Duke. He wants to address the current situation and see what his initial plans are for the coming conflict.
“Now that does sound like a proposal!” Lady Gabriella teases momentarily. Her look becomes more serious, but her smile does not waver.
“Thoughts of marriage have crossed my mind before. I would not be opposed to such a union in the future. As you say, right now there is much turmoil and the needs of our Kingdom must come before that of our own. When the time is right, I would be honored and privileged to be your wife.”

"It does indeed, doesn't it?" he responds simply as he takes in her gorgeous smile.
“Thoughts of marriage have crossed my mind before. I would not be opposed to such a union in the future. As you say, right now there is much turmoil and the needs of our Kingdom must come before that of our own. When the time is right, I would be honored and privileged to be your wife.”
"It would not be fair to our families, nor to those we are charged to assist in the reclamation of our kingdom, and it certainly would not be fair to us to rush such a momentous day. There will be a day very soon when Elcadan has been tamed and Stone Ridge is once more secured within the Kingdom. On that day, I will make you my wife." Validar leans in and kisses the beauteous Gabriella on her lips. "And until then, I wish to have you by my side as much and as long as is possible."
"Good to see you both again," the silver haired elf-maiden will say. "I will be departing shortly to explore the area around Fort Fletcher and will be stopping there. Are there any messages you wish me to pass on to your comrades?"
"Good to see you again as well Silvarn," Acerion replies. After listening to Validar's message, Acerion has very little to add. He will say, "If you have the chance to speak with Ivy, tell her I shall return to her in short order and she has no need to fear. Tell her she is never far from me for she is in my heart."
"If you are interested in pursuing this, we can set up interviews with the perspective candidates."
Thinking on these names while Validar responds, Acerion will speak up a moment later, "I have heard of the Wocken and Maunteas families. Mother has mentioned to me several of the other names of those families in Alexandria, although just in general conversation. However, she has repeatedly mentioned the Demendria family and speaks fairly highly of them."
"I also would like to review the criteria, although at this point I will certainly want to consider Demendria and Wocken," Acerion adds.
"I agree would should split up and move quickly," Acerion replies. "We can not afford to encounter organized resistance, nor can we risk a foolish decision on their part to accelerate the sacrifice."
Acerion will add, "I feel there will not be much resistance left to eradicate after we deal this blow, but am in agreeance to leave that decision until after the prisoners are freed and safely away."
Lady Vera will corner Sir Acerion. “Pardon me, Sir Acerion, but I was curious how the Guardians’ mission in the north lands was faring. I tried to speak to Sir Validar but he seems to be in one meeting after another. Have you any news?”
See looks to Sir Acerion with hopeful eyes.
"Ahh, Lady Ardel, a pleasure," Acerion says with a smile and a kiss on her hand. "Yes, Sir Validar is quite the busy man. I am sure he wishes to speak with you, but as you say, he has been summoned nearly all day. What would you like to know, and I will endeavor to please you with the telling."
Acerion will walk with Lady Ardel and tell her what has transpired so far for the Guardians. Nearing the end of the conversation, Validar shows up.
At some point before they go, Sir Validar will make a point to locate Lady Ardel and have some words with her. It would be quite rude to not speak with her and provide her with information on their task, while he is here. Certainly she will be anxious to hear any news.
"There he is," Acerion says upon seeing Validar approach. "See my lady, he had not forgotten."
Acerion will nod reassuredly to Validar, hoping he can guess his meaning. "A timely save, Sir Validar, I fear I was boring this fine Lady with my long winded tales," Acerion says in jest. He will bow and take his leave so that Validar may tell Lady Ardel anything that he may have missed.
With Sir Alon and Sir Acerion: Thinking on these names while Validar responds, Acerion will speak up a moment later, "I have heard of the Wocken and Maunteas families. However, she has repeatedly mentioned the Demendria family and speaks fairly highly of them."

"Perhaps we should conduct our interviews together so that we may both benefit from the added information we may learn from each of the aspirants," Validar will suggest. "We can make arrangements to have a short list meet us either here in Pyris when we return or at Fort Fletcher."

"There he is," Acerion says upon seeing Validar approach. "See my lady, he had not forgotten."
"Indeed, I had not. The reclaiming of Stone Ridge remains an important task to be certain."
"I am sure your tales are quite fascinating, my friend." As Acerion bows and turns to leave, Validar adds. "Thank you for entertaining the Lady. Please fell free to partake of our hospitality, while we remain here. Tomorrow's attack will come soon enough. Rooms have been prepared for all of our guests here."
As Sir Acerion is taking his leave, Validar turns to Lady Ardel. "There has been the beginnings of progress, my lady. While we do not have Ardelphia under seige as yet, it is a process that requires several stages in order to not only take back Stone Ridge, but also to hold it permanently."
"The Guardians have secured Fort Fletcher. Even now Lord Corley is in command of the fortress. He has also committed himself, body and soul, to your quest. Indeed, he is a good man and a good friend and very deserving of the knighthood confered on him by our new King. Once the Fort is completely secured, we will be able to move on in our campaign."
"The dwarven allies that we have are beginning their plans to take back their dwelling place known as Hammerfall. With both of these places secured, we will be able to attack Ardelphia and the rest of the controlled area from two directions and eliminate their retreat, thereby securing their total destruction once we can successfully bring them to battle. Fort Runnels has also been secured by the Lady Penhaligon and the Kingdom is striving to make it permanently defensible as well."
"In addition, there are other campaigns now underway. In the short term, they may take some resources away from our campaign in Stone Ridge, in the long run, they will certainly unite the cause for the entire region and bring all of western Cynalon into a place of unity."
"I fear I cannot supply a time frame where you can count on our success, however, I will assure you that we will succeed. Sir Acerion, Sir Corley and I will not rest until we have fulfilled our vow, even if I have to figure out some way to be in many places all at the same time."
"Once the enemy hordes have been defeated, we can begin the task of rebuilding your baronial lands."
"Perhaps we should conduct our interviews together so that we may both benefit from the added information we may learn from each of the aspirants," Validar will suggest. "We can make arrangements to have a short list meet us either here in Pyris when we return or at Fort Fletcher."
"A fine idea indeed," Acerion replies. "It would definitely save time and the additional information gained could prove important some time in the future."

Please fell free to partake of our hospitality, while we remain here. Tomorrow's attack will come soon enough. Rooms have been prepared for all of our guests here."
"You are most welcome my friend," Acerion replies. "Thank you for your hospitality. There is much still to be done before tomorrow arrives. A good night to the both of you."
Acerion will get settled into his room and then head out to prepare himself for tomorrow's challenges. He will inquire if there is a temple to Heironeous and get directions. If there is not, or if it is many hours away, he will simply return to his room.
Whether in the temple or simply his room, Acerion will be adorned in only his simple robe. He will be in prayer well into the night, stopping only to make sure he gets enough sleep so that he may pray for his spells in the morning.

"It will also give us a chane to speak to ones that we may not have otherwise. There may be a future need for these squires. We should inform Sir Corley of such as well."

"Indeed there is. I feel like I have moved from one meeting to another, with scarcely a break. These are interesting times in which we live, my friend. There is much opportunity the change the kingdom. We are in a period unlike many other in that regard. It is unfortunate that the kingdom had to fall on difficult times, but that is often the catalyst for dramatic change." Validar's smile fades and he turns a bit more serious.
"We sit on the precipice of a new kingdom and we shall be the instruments of that change. This opportunity is unlike any other that has been presented to our heroes of the past since King Victor the 1st himself founded this kingdom. Tomorrow is but one more step on that path, the path of rebirth." Validar will clap the knight on his shoulder and smile again.
-------------------------------------------------------
Lady Vera Ardel:
"I am sorry that I cannot be more specific about the situation. There are many variables and the situation in Cynalon seems to change daily. Once we deliver this blow to the Hextorites in Keln, we will have less pressure from that front for some time. Further, it will be easier for some of our allies to assist us in our tasks here in the west."
"I would continue to welcome you to stay here in Pyris. Nay, I insist on it. We are making progress and there is no reason for you to travel about. Here you are safe. It may be wise to begin the process of organization and what we will need initially once the horde has been cleared."
"Further, we have reclaimed another portion of the Guardian Shield. That artifact will ensure that Stone Ridge is never again invaded by our enemies. Two of the four pieces are in our hands. We are very close to success." Validar turns to the Lady Ardel. "Soon, Stone Ridge will be yours again."
Sir Validar wrote:"I am indeed interested, my friend. I am familiar with some of the families you mention. I have heard of the Wocken, Mauntea and Umbarth families, but I do not know of the individuals you mention. I have heard of Sara Ebonov; is she not a cousin of Lord Torenscu? I have even met Lucian Hyraksos. His older brother, Dmitros, was a commander in the Frontier as well."
"Yes, the Ebonovs are cousins to the Torenscus. Her family is also involved in merchandizing."
Sir Validar wrote:"I would like to review the criteria for the individuals and make a short list of potential candidates. I think Ebonov and Hyraksos will certainly be on the list and we can add from there."
Sir Acerion wrote:"I also would like to review the criteria, although at this point I will certainly want to consider Demendria and Wocken," Acerion adds.
"Their full reviews are back at the Order Hall," Sir Alon explains. "We can set up interviews there and can include Sir Corley in the process."
Gabriella:
"It would not be fair to our families, nor to those we are charged to assist in the reclamation of our kingdom, and it certainly would not be fair to us to rush such a momentous day. There will be a day very soon when Elcadan has been tamed and Stone Ridge is once more secured within the Kingdom. On that day, I will make you my wife." Validar leans in and kisses the beauteous Gabriella on her lips. "And until then, I wish to have you by my side as much and as long as is possible."
"Then we are in agreement. Until that day we can spend as much time together as we can with our separate schedules. I shall remain until you and the others depart on your mission tomorrow. I'll await your safe return at Karn's Keep. But, in the mean time, perhaps we can contemplate the future some more this evening?"
The Baron and Baroness exchange puzzled glances, but after a moment a knowing smile comes to Baroness Lysandra's face.
Sir Validar wrote:"Thank you for your words. I am most pleased to have been honored as such by the new King." To his sister, he will add, "Not to worry, it seems you will now have plenty of opportunities to prove your own mettle. We have a monumental task before us in securing all of Elcadan and Ansimont. There is much to be done."
"Never let it be said that we Vanarkuses back down from a challenge," Lady Rachel states eagerly. "It might be fun too!"
Sir Validar wrote:Later at a moment that is appropriate, Lord Validar will lean in and whisper to his mother, "It is not official as yet, but the lovely Lady Allonica is the one I intend to marry, if she will have me. I just thought that the Duchess should know such news."
"I had thought as much," the now-Duchess Lysandra whispers back. "A mother can tell when her son is happy, and with the Lady Allonica you are very happy. I'll be discrete with this information, but will wish to meet with her when the time is appropriate. We have much to discuss and plan for."
Baron Relon will have further conversations with the King and those others who have pledged their aid with the Elcadan situation. "We have much to accomplish in this task. Organization will be paramount to our success."
"Indeed that is the truth. When we return from our mission in Keln, there is much to finalize and much work to begin. "We'll get the process started while you're away. We'll have to decide who to bring with us on the journey to Elcadan and those to stay behind. A new leader will be needed for Pyris as I suspect Elcadan will require my full attention."
"Ah yes, the Penhaligons are renowned for the skill of their warriors. With such high praise for her, I can't help but give the lady a chance to prove her worth. I look forward to working with you towards the improvement of these lands, Lady Penhaligon."
“The pleasure is mine, Duke Relon,” Lady Penhaligon responds. “Let us transform this land into something our ancestors would be proud of.”
Sir Validar wrote:"Further it is important to begin the economic conflict with the Elcadan Merchant Guilds as soon as possible.
Duke Relon will smile as Sir Validar makes his suggestions. "Always eager to go to battle. I agree that force will probably be required, but it should not be how we start our campaign to bring order to Elcadan. Long has there been conflict between our domains. So much so, that such action right at the start might sway potential allies to the other side. In this case being the aggressor might not be to our advantage."
"We must observe a proper transition of power in accordance to the traditions of our lands. We will go to Elcadan and take the position as dictated by the King. The Merchant Council will be dissolved and fair trade practices put into place. When and if they break the King’s Law then we will act accordingly.”
“It is my opinion that the key to this situation is winning over the populace of Elcadan. They are the people who have suffered under these unfair practices. The merchants may have the wealth, but these common people are far greater in number. We win them over and then much of the battle will have been won.”
“Some of the merchants there are unquestionably evil and I would happily put them to the sword myself. Others are simply seizing the opportunity presented to them. There will be those who will conform to the new rule and there will be those who will require persuasion.”
“Gather your forces as you suggest, Validar. My actions will give you the time needed to accomplish this task. Double the patrols as you suggest, but do not start seizing cargo just yet. Let us act in a proper manner in this situation. We are entering a nest of vipers, my son. Let us determine which of them are poisonous and which are harmless before taking them all on.”
The general consensus is that those involved will split up into three previously-determined, but fairly equal groups as the time comes. The exact composition of these groups will be determined at Karn’s Keep, once everyone involved is present.
Dellant:
Later that evening, Sir Validar will find Dellant waiting for him. "You summoned me, milord?"
"Indeed I did, Dellant son of Sir Corwin. Do you recall the conversation we had when you carried my shield for me? The King has granted me the privileged of knighthood and therefore, I am in need of a herald as I mentioned. I would like you to be my herald, Dellant. Do you accept?"
“Congratulations, milord! It is a most deserving honor bestowed upon you! My studies in heraldry have come along since we last spoke. I am not sure I am as far along in them as you need, but I cannot decline our generous offer, Sir Validar. I graciously and humbly accept.”
Lady Vera:
Later that evening, the Knights speak with Lady Vera Ardel. The young woman is eager to hear of news regarding the restoration of her ancestral holdings.
Acerion will nod reassuredly to Validar, hoping he can guess his meaning. "A timely save, Sir Validar, I fear I was boring this fine Lady with my long-winded tales," Acerion says in jest. He will bow and take his leave so that Validar may tell Lady Ardel anything that he may have missed.
"I am sure your tales are quite fascinating, my friend." As Acerion bows and turns to leave, Validar adds. "Thank you for entertaining the Lady. Please feel free to partake of our hospitality, while we remain here. Tomorrow's attack will come soon enough. Rooms have been prepared for all of our guests here."
“Sir Acerion sells himself way too short,” Lady Vera states graciously. “He’s been a wonderful storyteller and a perfect gentleman. I am in awe of your band's exploits. It is clear that both of your knighthoods have been well deserved.”
Sir Acerion excuses himself and Sir Validar supplies more details. Lady Vera is extremely impressed.
“The progress you and your allies have made in such a short time is astonishing! I never dared believe that I would see a few of these things come to pass, let alone so many! You’ve given me hope where there was barely a flicker before, Sir Validar. I do not know how I could possibly repay your kindness and bravery. I am so, so grateful!”
Sir Validar will take time to meet privately with his father, the newly appointed Duke. He wants to address the current situation and see what his initial plans are for the coming conflict.
“We’ll make preparations for our entering Elcadan while you are away. My spies will be gathering intelligence on the composition of the Merchant’s Council and which ones will give us the most difficulty. Once you return, we’ll ride forth from Pyris and follow the High Road to Elcadan. We’ll pass through the villages along the way and spread the word that change is coming for this region. It’ll be interesting to see if anyone tries to stop us from reaching Elcadan. We live in very exciting times, my son!”
Right before Sir Acerion is ready to step out of his room, there is a knock on his door. Opening it, he finds Dame Sharl there in her traditional robes.
“Pleasant evening, brother. I hope that I’m not disturbing you. Crysania and I were going to have a service to prepare for tomorrow's battle. We thought you’d like to join us.”
Assuming that Sir Acerion aggresses, Dame Sharl will lead him to the outer chamber of the suite being used by the King. There the Stone House sits under guard. Sharl utters the command word and has the door magically appear.
Inside the Stone House, Acerion is escorted to a chamber back behind the others he has been in before. There a makeshift shrine to Heironeous has been erected. Crysania is already there.
“I put this place together as a place to pray while traveling with the King,” Sharl explains.
A copper statue of Heironeous dominates the chamber. The time is passed in prayer, in the singing of uplifting battle hymns, and in the consumption of meats, red wine, and fruits and vegetables to install strength for the battle to come.
Squires: "I have heard of Sara Ebonov; is she not a cousin of Lord Torenscu? I have even met Lucian Hyraksos. His older brother, Dmitros, was a commander in the Frontier as well."
"Yes, the Ebonovs are cousins to the Torenscus. Her family is also involved in merchandizing."
"Yes, that was my understanding. Surely someone who combines both economic and military training would be a useful apprentice."
"I also would like to review the criteria, although at this point I will certainly want to consider Demendria and Wocken," Acerion adds.
"Their full reviews are back at the Order Hall," Sir Alon explains. "We can set up interviews there and can include Sir Corley in the process."
"If we have a rapid means of transportation continuously available to us, then that would work just fine. Otherwise, we may need to have the interviews closer to one of our bases of operation, such as Pyris or Fort Fletcher."
-----------------------------------------------------------
Gabriella: "It would not be fair to our families, nor to those we are charged to assist in the reclamation of our kingdom, and it certainly would not be fair to us to rush such a momentous day. I'll await your safe return at Karn's Keep. But, in the mean time, perhaps we can contemplate the future some more this evening?"
"Very good. Just so you understand, I may require your presence for quite a bit of negotiations in the situation with Elcadan and her baronies," Validar says with a knowing smile. "It may require lots of personal meetings as well."
"It is good to know that you will be here this day and the next morning. While there are many meetings to be had, in all seriousness and in all honesty, I could use your skills to assist in the negotitations that are bound to take place." Validar pauses for a moment. "And I am certain we can find some time to continue our contemplation of the future as you suggest. That is not an offer I could pass up no matter how full my day might be."
"Waiting at Karn's Keep is a good idea. With luck we will have an opportunity to meet with Sir Corley and the Guardians at Fort Fletcher before the trip back to Pyris."
"Indeed there is. I feel like I have moved from one meeting to another, with scarcely a break. These are interesting times in which we live, my friend. There is much opportunity the change the kingdom. We are in a period unlike many other in that regard. "Indeed I feel much the same way," Acerion replies. "It is almost as if the kingdom itself is brand new, with all the pieces being brought into play to set and secure a strong future. I guess in some ways this is true."
"Like a lounging tiger that suddenly pounces on lulled prey that wandered too close, these changes seem to be just as quick," the paladin continues. "This is because these changes must be such for us to be victorious, for the enemy can not percieve us as in a state of lazy contentment any longer. Acting quick, swift and sure; these are the steps in this ladder to victory."
"A pleasant evening to you," Acerion replies with a slight bow. "You are far from disturbing me. In fact I was preparing to do that very same thing myself. Your timing could not be more perfect. It would be an honor to be in such fine company."
Inside the Stone House, Acerion is escorted to a chamber back behind the others he has been in before. There a makeshift shrine to Heironeous has been erected. Crysania is already there.
“I put this place together as a place to pray while traveling with the King,” Sharl explains.
"You honor our god with such dedication," Acerion replies, pleased with the fine surroundings. "I can only pray noble Heironeous finds my devotion and prayers made upon the road adequate enough since I lack such fine trappings such as these."
A copper statue of Heironeous dominates the chamber. The time is passed in prayer, in the singing of uplifting battle hymns, and in the consumption of meats, red wine, and fruits and vegetables to install strength for the battle to come.
Acerion revels in the power possessed by the three of them, so devout in belief and worship of their deity. He has spent so much time alone and in silent prayer, that a full ceremony in the company of others can not compare. He knows in his heart that Heironeous does not think any less of him for the path he has walked, but having the proper ceremony does much to empower and prepare Acerion for the battle to come.
Lady Allonica is a superb negotiator and will be available for our future needs." Seeing the confused look on the faces of the Baron and Baroness, Validar quickly adds. "I am getting ahead of myself somewhat I am afraid. All will be made clear soon enough."
The Baron and Baroness exchange puzzled glances, but after a moment a knowing smile comes to Baroness Lysandra's face.
Validar is not sure about the smile gracing his mother's face. Surely she cannot know about the King's plans to elevate them to control of the new Duchy. Although his mother always was good at reading people...
------------------------------------------------------------------
"Not to worry, it seems you will now have plenty of opportunities to prove your own mettle. We have a monumental task before us in securing all of Elcadan and Ansimont. There is much to be done."
"Never let it be said that we Vanarkuses back down from a challenge," Lady Rachel states eagerly. "It might be fun too!"
"Indeed, there has not been a challenge created that would sway the courage of a Vanarkus. Personally, I would consider this a warm-up to taking control of old Elcadan, while we're at it." That is said with some sarcasm, yet there remains a trace of seriousness in the knight's voice. "I am not sure I would quantify this situation as fun, but it will certainly be glorious and our mission is quite the honorable one. There are many lives that will be made the better for these changes."
-------------------------------------------------------------
Later at a moment that is appropriate, Lord Validar will lean in and whisper to his mother, "It is not official as yet, but the lovely Lady Allonica is the one I intend to marry, if she will have me.
"I suppose that I was unable to disguise my feelings when around Gabriella. She just seems to have that effect on me. We would indeed appreciate it if it were not common knowledge at this moment, since we have not officially announced anything," Validar whispers back. "However, it will never be too soon to plan." This may be a good thing, something to occupy his mother's activities besides the issues of Elcadan. Certainly it will keep her busy for some time.
"We'll get the process started while you're away. We'll have to decide who to bring with us on the journey to Elcadan and those to stay behind. A new leader will be needed for Pyris as I suspect Elcadan will require my full attention."
Validar pauses for a moment at these words. He had always assumed that the Duchy would be run from Pyris, not from Elcadan, despite its larger size. Thoughts rush through the young knight's head.
"There is much opportunity here. We have soldiers in place and new defenses already built as well as more in the process. Ideally, you would raise your own troops and bring them to the Twin Forks area. We will need the existing Pyrisian troops to help occupy territory we have claimed as well as creating a large enough supporting army to defend Elcadan and the new Duke from his enemies."
"There are maps available of the area and we have a contact here in Pyris that you can find out all the details about our progress in Twin Forks. We have been working on elevating the economic status of the people there and encouraging poor from the cities to move there."
"Further we could use mercenary troops in addition to whatever troops of your own you can raise. If it comes to battle, we are severely outnumbered by Elcadan's forces."
Validar then turns back to the new Duke. "Duke Vanarkus, you mentioned a new leader for Pyris. With all due respect, I am a bit perplexed, as these are our family lands. Our blood has run through this territory for several generations now."
"While I understand that the viper's nest that has been Elcadan will require a large amount of concentration for a considerable amount of time, even after the transition of power is complete, and that the situation here is quite stable, I am loathe to see our beloved home run by even the most agreeable of governors. Pyris will have to support the effort to claim Elcadan and her people will follow her Baron anywhere and fight any foe. They deserve to have a proper leader for them, especially in this difficult time."
-------------------------------------------------------------
Validar makes some suggestions on how to wage the war on Elcadan, but his father has different ideas.
"I cannot believe that force will not be required. I think it is a foregone conclusion, as many of the true leaders of Elcadan will not be quick to give up either their power nor their money. They will also be the ones with the largest and best army to face, with troops who will be loyal to the money they have been receiving."
"I must point out that by acting politically at first rather than decisively, it may gain us an advantage with potential allies, but it is at the risk of allowing the enemy to prepare and make plans from a position of strength."
"We must observe a proper transition of power in accordance to the traditions of our lands. We will go to Elcadan and take the position as dictated by the King. The Merchant Council will be dissolved and fair trade practices put into place. When and if they break the King’s Law then we will act accordingly.”
Validar purses his lips as the new Duke speaks. Either he underestimates what the process will be like, or he has a lot of confidence in their ability to deal with whatever the enemy brings to bear.
"I admire the Duke's desire to take control of Elcadan with the proper ceremony. Certainly I will support you in whatever your designs and desires happen to be. I think we can expect the Merchant Council to either ignore the decrees or openly declare "war" on the new leadership. You must be aware that your life and that of the Duchess will be in danger from the moment your decree is made, until the last potential enemy is removed."
"We will need a mage available to counter whatever they may throw at us. As the Lady Sallavarian has made her home an available base to us, I trust that she will also be able to deter the enemy's magickal attacks against you personally. We will also need to have a large enough military contingent ready to defend against an immediate uprising."
"I agree that the common citizens of Elcadan are certainly the key to winning this 'war'. It is why we have already begun the process in Elcadan with the House of the Blue Lady and the build-up in Twin Forks. Those who oppose us will be dealt with the sword. Certainly it must be made clear that there will be no mercy for those who take up arms against the new leadership. To do so only invites future risk and danger."
"My biggest concern in this tactic is that there may be some wise, yet opposing, leaders and merchants who pretend to play along but act as a snake in the grass and incite problems later when the smoke has cleared and everyone's guard is down."
Validar lets out a bit of a sigh, but then snaps to attention and salutes the Duke. "I will empty my personal treasure captured in the Frontier for the needs of raising a larger army from our own lands as well as collecting mercenary bands to fight for us."
"The numbers under our banners will swell. I shall not see Pyris undefended while we take control of Elcadan, nor will I see us under-manned there in our enemy's lands. You will not be disappointed."
------------------------------------------------------------
Validar will meet with the generals of the army, cavalry and artillery. He will have them immediately begin the conscription process to bring in as many more troops from Pyris as is possible. They will need to increase the amount of weapons created both of the personal form as well as seige engines. Validar would ideally like to see the numbers doubled of the regular troops.
He will at some point meet with all the Captains of the Light Cavalry squadrons. He will compliment them on their continued success in patroling the borders of their territory with Elcadan. He will double the patrols as agreed upon by his father, hopefully bringing more cavalry into creation to replace those taken from the reserves for this task.
"Further, I want all Elcadan caravans regardless of size detained for inspection. Preferably a long inspection. Larger caravans are to be escorted to the city's gates where our foot soldiers can assist in the safe inspections. Smaller caravans can be inspected immediately upon entering our borders."
"I want to know what they are carrying and what they may be smuggling. If they argue, fine them heavily. If they are smuggling anything past our gates, seize the entire wagon in question. If they mount any resistance, then seize the entire caravan. If anyone tries to bribe one of the inspectors, I want them arrested immediately and fined a significant sum, based on their caravan value."
"You are acting on the King's intentions and the new Duke's decree. Elcadan's Merchant Council will be disbanded and their Guilds forced to engage in proper trade practices. Any shipments that belong to Elcadan's Merchant Guilds that originate here must also undergo a thorough inspection before leaving our territories. I do not care if the backlog becomes hours or even days. There are no exceptions. Am I clear?"
Validar will wish them well on their duties and will speak to all the assembled light cavalry, saying a few rousing words to encourage them to an excellent job in their task.
Private meeting with the Duke: Sir Validar will take time to meet privately with his father, the newly appointed Duke.
"I have already begun the process for enlarging the army and employing mercenary troops as well. With luck we will also be able to gain the alliance of the Baron of Ansimont. While we do not know the situation with him and his lords, having them at our side when we arrive in Elcadan can only help our cause. Lady Allonica has agreed to assist us with this sort of task and I will ask her to accompany us on our trip."
"I believe that many of the villages will rally to our banner. Those that do not can be persuaded otherwise. And if anyone does try to stop us, that should only make our job easier in the long run. If they are wise, they will marshall their forces and consolidate them. Surely, they will know what is happening if they do not already. I do not expect the enemy to be caught off-guard by our arrival."
"This is the day that I have been waiting for since I could lift a sword. This is the chance that I have planned to put into action for many years. With the King's backing, it will be all the easier."
-------------------------------------------------------
The Herald Dellant: “Congratulations, milord! It is a most deserving honor bestowed upon you! My studies in heraldry have come along since we last spoke. I am not sure I am as far along in them as you need, but I cannot decline our generous offer, Sir Validar. I graciously and humbly accept.”
"I need men who strive to make a difference and I need those who wish to prove themselves. I trust I will not be disappointed in my choice. Sir Corwin is a fine knight and I will help you to be the best warrior and gentleman that you can be."
"I have several tasks that you will be responsible for. Firstly, you will be responsible for mainitaining records on military situations in our immediate area. Likely you will be travelling with me to Elcadan and beyond and we need to keep constant control of our numbers."
"Secondly, you need to make yourself aware of the Merchant Councils various military groups and the colors and banners that identify them. It is important to know who we are facing on the field of battle. You will have until I return from the attack on Keln to compile this information."
"Further, I want you to assemble a contingent of several messengers. As my hereld, you will be responsible for sending messages as required. We will need riders and horses. The first task will be to send word to the largest nearby cities that we are hiring mercenary troops here in Pyris. We will be paying standard pay rates for mercenary troops, plus 50% for those who see battle action and another 50% if those troops are victorious, plus potential spoils. I want these notices crafted and posted in the following cities and towns: Gateway, Crossroads, Favaro, Nemiston and, of course, here in Pyris and Timberline. Once we start to control territories of the old Duchy of Elcadan, we will make sure we can recruit from there as well."
Validar will have procured a proper badge and medallion to present to the new Herald. "In addition to these indications of your rank, you are the bearer of my standard, until I have the opportunity to acquire a proper standard bearer. I have the ultimate confidence in you and will return in a few days. If you have any questions, ask them now or first thing in the morning, for I leave with the King tomorrow for the attack on New Keln."
------------------------------------------------------------
Lady Vera: “Sir Acerion sells himself way too short,” Lady Vera states graciously. “He’s been a wonderful storyteller and a perfect gentleman. I am in awe of your band's exploits. It is clear that both of your knighthoods have been well deserved.”
"The paladin is too modest for his own good, I should think, my lady. I am honored to count him as a friend and comrade at arms. Our band takes the opportunities that come and make the most of them. We risk our lives and we risk failure for the chance to succeed where others would not dare. But do not forget the good Sir Corley in your esteem. He is as deserving as both of us and even now continues to hold your territory for you. Fort Fletcher is in good hands."
"If there were not so many fronts that we find ourselves fighting on atonce, I would think we might be even farther along. It has been a dangerous road, but I am pleased that I can report the success that we have attained as well as continuing to offer you serious hope that your baronial lands will soon be restored to their proper station."
Sir Validar turns serious for a moment and motions for the Lady Ardel to take a seat. "Lady Ardel, I have committed to taking up your quest, along with Sir Corley and Sir Acerion, and we will see it fulfilled. However, I also do not wish to see it ever compromised again. While the Guardian Shield will be a means to protect the immediate area of Stone Ridge, it will not be complete protection from a cunning enemy."
"The Duke of Corunglain has been under constant attack and the current battles we have just completed have seen many of his men wounded and killed. Controlling the territory remains a challenge, as long as whomever is behind the recent invasions might still remain. Therefore, I wish to present to you my humble request in exchange for restoring Stone Ridge."
Validar hesitates for a moment. It is not in his normal mode to ask for something in return, but these times and the changes that have developed require swift and sure action. "With the new King in charge it is likely that the enemy will be forced into action against us, as Cynalon awakens from its self-induced slumber. It is my feeling that we need to be decisive in our actions and take steps to not only secure what we have lost, but also acquire that what the enemy controls and move the buffer zone away from our existing lands."
"I pray that you forgive my boldness in suggesting these terms, but I feel it will be the best for Stone Ridge and the best for Cynalon. I would ask you to petition the King and The Duke of Corunglain for Stone Ridge to become a barony under the feudal control of the new Duchy being created by Duke Relon. In exchange, we will secure your borders, we will assemble an army and train those that require it, and we will assist in every matter in bringing Ardelphia and Stone Ridge back to life. Further we will endeavor to continue to personally help in securing the rest of Corunglain's borders and work to expand them. We will supply them with replacement of seige engines and additional machines as well."
"Corunglain will be losing nothing they do not currently have and gaining a partner and a strong ally in the north to defend their lands. Stone Ridge will be gaining everything including being a part of a Duchy that will be willing and able to make certain that it is never lost again."
Validar will pause and gauge the reception by the Lady Ardel. "Certainly you do not have to decide now. But I think I offer you very strong terms that would be mutually beneficial."
-----------------------------------------------------
Gabriella -
Eventually, Gabriella and Validar will have some time alone again, late in the evening. "I would like to thank you for attending several of the meetings this day with me. If you are to assist with the negotiations to come, surely the more information you have now, the better."
"But there will be time to talk about conquest and politics, battle and diplomacy, my dearest lady. For now I wish to simply forget about all that and gaze into the marvelously wonderful dark pools that are your eyes. I could lose myself in those depths and never wish to be seen again."
Validar finds himself a place to sit and motions the lovely Gabriella to join him. "I have spoken so much today, I think my jaw may now be stronger than my swordarm. I would be pleased to hear your voice now, much more than my own. Please indulge me, if you would, my lady. Tell me what of your dreams for our future together?"
