Elfquest #7

The barge has set down on the western shores of Lake Amsorak, north of the ruins of Old Elcadan. Those on the barge examine the items they found on the wreck, while the others explore the nearby area. Out in the tall grass, Laucian realizes that there is a snake slithering nearby! He casts Flameblade, while Nariya produces a spear from her magical quiver.

Onyx also senses the presence of the snake. The cats back arches and it hisses loudly. At Laucian’s direction, the Onyx goes scampering back through the grass towards the barge.

Movement is spotted up ahead and the elves grip their weapons tighter. Scales are seen moving amongst the tall grass. Suddenly, the snake rears up and its head can be seen moving towards Laucian! The head is huge, about the size of a dwarf! Judging by the size of its head, the body must be over 30’ long!

Back at the barge, the experimenting continues. Lilia sits down with the dresses and is quickly able to surmise their magical functions. The dresses are enchanted to adjust to the body of those who are wearing them, as are the accessories. They do not wrinkle or get dirty nor do they tear.

Experimentation with the food book continues. Foods and liquids can be pulled out easy enough. In some cases, such as with the water, cups can be used to scoop out the liquids. The contents cannot be poured out of the book nor can they fall out. They have to be physically removed from the book.

New items can be added in. Some of the groups’ peaches are added to the peach page. The picture shows a few more peaches on it. It doesn’t show as many of the fruit as the strawberry page, so changes are noticeable. When an item is added to the blank page, the picture changes to that item. The picture also shows the exact quantity.

Lia attempts to use her knack for comprehending languages on the dairy, but finds the text eludes her understanding.
Kylie thinks for a moment. "Last place I remember seeing that box, which I believe your magic Slate labeled a Box of Security, was at your tower. Do you know if it's still there, Sherwood?"
“I took the chest to Jallarzi’s after we left my tower. It should be at Karn’s Keep right now. I could always teleport there to find out if this key opens it.”

At that moment, Onyx comes bounding up to Sherwood. The small tabby leaps up and latches onto Sherwood’s leg with his claws.

Valena climbs up on the barge as well, alerting everyone to her suspicions that you’ve landed in a predator’s hunting ground…

Now what?
Try it and find out!

With both Flameblade and Longsword before him Laucian’s eyes narrow as the giant snake comes towards him. Judging by the huge head it could probably snap an elf in half with one bite!

"Come then, You will not find this Elf an easy meal!"

As the huge snake comes slithering forward for lunch time, Laucian gets ready for the coming strike. He will tear into the snake with his flame blade then lashing out with his longsword. If by chance the snake gets him in its coils, he will use his Flameblade the best he can angling the fiery blade into the snakes flanks.

(Assuming the Flameblade cannot be dropped)

Lia attempts to use her knack for comprehending languages on the dairy, but finds the text eludes her understanding.
A look of frustration comes upon her face as the text is beyond. Closing the book and placing it aside, “Tis no use. I cannot make sense of it.”
At that moment, Onyx comes bounding up to Sherwood. The small tabby leaps up and latches onto Sherwood’s leg with his claws.

Valena climbs up on the barge as well, alerting everyone to her suspicions that you’ve landed in a predator’s hunting ground…
Lia looks on as Onyx flies through the air latching onto Sherwood as if frighten soon after Valena alerts us to being in a possible hunting ground. Looking back to Onyx and Sherwood her eyes widen.

“Where are Nariya and Laucian?” she asks the others as she looks hopefully about from the barge into the sea of grass for sign of them.
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Sherwood:

The book of food is experimented with. We can add new items to the book and the picture changes to reflect the contents of the page.

“I believe that we can determine the ground rules for using this book. It stores whatever you put into each page and it remains in the state that it was in when inserted. There probably is a capacity limit and that it is also possible to empty a page out. For simplicities sake, our unknown benefactor kept everything separate which makes sense than mixing things. This was probably her private stash of snacks and not used by the entire crew. Regardless, it should take care of most of our food needs for the foreseeable future.”

Much to his surprise, Sherwood finds a cat attached to his leg. “Onyx? What are you doing here?”

Seeing that the cat is upset about something, Sherwood picsk Onyx up and tries to calm him.

“Laucian must have sent it back to warn us of something.”

Valena returns and warns up s that she suspects that we’re in a predator’s hunting ground.

“Get your weapons ready,” Sherwood tells his companions. “Lilia, take the barge up about twenty feet so that we can get a better view of our surroundings. If they are in trouble, we might be able to aid them right away.”

Lilia:
Kylie wrote:"Thank you," Kylie says as she finds a good place to set them. "You know, there are four dresses and four women in this group. If it turns out that the magic isn't harmful, then perhaps we could each keep one. Imagine how beautiful we would all look in such fine dresses..."
“Yes, I suppose,” Lilia responds, but she’s clearly not as enthused about the dresses as Kylie is. Must be her human blood acting that way.

Sitting down with the dresses, Lilia attempts to divine the enchantments on them.
Back at the barge, the experimenting continues. Lilia sits down with the dresses and is quickly able to surmise their magical functions. The dresses are enchanted to adjust to the body of those who are wearing them, as are the accessories. They do not wrinkle or get dirty nor do they tear.
“The dresses are self-cleaning and will adjust to the body of the wearer,” Lilia reports. “I sense no other enchantments on them.”

First Onyx and then Valena returns and it seems that danger is afoot.
Sherwood wrote:“Get your weapons ready,” Sherwood tells his companions. “Lilia, take the barge up about twenty feet so that we can get a better view of our surroundings. If they are in trouble, we might be able to aid them right away.”
“Right away, Sherwood.”

Concentrating, Lilia will direct the barge to go upwards to give us a better view of the area. Once that is done she’ll look out and try to spot Laucian and Nariya amongst the tall grass.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Valena:
Once full, it turns out that Sherwood can easily keep the Spell Engine full on his own. Thus, there is no reason for any of the rest of them to concern themselves with it. "You're right, Sherwood. I hadn't expected that it would be so easy to keep up with the Spell Engine's expenditures of spell energy. Under the circumstances, I won't destroy the two items; however, I am still willing to give them to anyone who might have a greater use for them than I..." Kylie looks around the group to see if anyone shows any interest.
“I’ll take the potion, if no one else minds.”

Once back at the barge, Val reveals what she found out in the grass. “I find a man-sized skeleton picked clean. It looks like it was crushed by something very large!”

Seeing Onyx’s agitated state, Valena can only conclude that Laucian must have come across this predator!
“Get your weapons ready,” Sherwood tells his companions. “Lilia, take the barge up about twenty feet so that we can get a better view of our surroundings. If they are in trouble, we might be able to aid them right away.”
Drawing her bow, Valena will move to the front of the barge to get a better view. She looks for Nariya and Laucian and will use her bow if she finds them in danger.

Kylie looks at the expression on Talen's face when he tastes the brown syrup. "Tasty, isn't it?" she asks with a grin.
“Its exhilarating,” Talon adds. “I wonder what it is? I could eat this all day!”

Nodding his understanding, Talon will pull himself up onto the roof of the enclosed area of the barge. From this vantage point he should be able to see in all directions. He’ll call out those on deck when he spots something.

Kylie:
Talen wrote:“Its exhilarating,” Talon adds. “I wonder what it is? I could eat this all day!”
Kylie giggles. "I know what you mean. Still, it's very rich; I suspect if I ate too much my stomach would feel woozy like when you eat too much candy." The expression on her face makes it clear that this is not something she has enjoyed in the past.
Valena wrote:“I’ll take the potion, if no one else minds.”

"Fine with me, Valena" Kylie says, handing the vial to her clanswoman. It seems strange to think of her that way, but it's true. This will take some time getting used to.
Talen wrote:“What does a Ring of Truth do?” Talon wonders.
Kylie turns to Talen. "As I understand it, it makes the wearer aware of any lies spoken in their presence. However, it also makes the wearer unable to speak any falsehoods themself. Kind of a double-edged sword, in that sense."
Lilia wrote:“The dresses are self-cleaning and will adjust to the body of the wearer,” Lilia reports. “I sense no other enchantments on them.”
"Wow. That's great, Lilia! Thanks. I guess we can decide what to do with the dresses later when we have more time."
Sherwood wrote:“I believe that we can determine the ground rules for using this book. It stores whatever you put into each page and it remains in the state that it was in when inserted. "That makes sense. Do you think it would be a good idea to empty out some of the desserts - like the brown stuff and the white, creamy stuff - and fill those pages with more nutritious food? That way, we're sure to have it later if we need it."

Either way, Kylie will search the food stores that they brought with them to fill the empty page. Optimally, it would be best to fill it with something perishable, like meat, bread or cheese. If nothing like that is available, she'll make a second page of trail mix, since they have lots of that right now.
Lia wrote:A look of frustration comes upon her face as the text is beyond. Closing the book and placing it aside, “Tis no use. I cannot make sense of it.”
"I wonder why..." Kylie muses. "Oh well, we'll just have to rely on magic in this case. I'll make sure to have the spell available tomorrow."
Sherwood wrote:“I took the chest to Jallarzi’s after we left my tower. It should be at Karn’s Keep right now. I could always teleport there to find out if this key opens it.”
"Karn's Keep. Should be safe enough there, with Sharadin and the twins to watch over it.

"I don't know if you running back there right now is a good idea. Do we have any idea what the Crown of Stars does and whether it would be any help to us on this quest?"
Valena wrote:Once back at the barge, Val reveals what she found out in the grass. “I find a man-sized skeleton picked clean. It looks like it was crushed by something very large!”

Not needing to be told twice when hints of trouble arise, Kylie dashes off to fetch her bow. She then joins the others at the railing as Lilia lifts them into the air. Nocking an arrow and pulling it halfway to maintain the tension, she searches the area for a target.

If Laucian decides to do it and has any luck getting the snake to chase him (should be easy! ) Nariya will set her spear for a charge. If Laucian can't or won't, she will move up close to him and lunge at the snake with the spear.

Post Continued:

On the grassy plains to the west of Lake Amsorak and to the north of Old Elcadan, Laucian and Nariya have found a snake in the grass. The serpent rises up and is nearly eye level to Laucian. But the elfin ranger is prepared. His longsword is in one hand and a conjured Flame Blade is in the other.

The snake moves to strike, but Laucian is first. First his longsword slashes through the snakes’ scales, then the Flame Blade follows suit.

Nariya calls out to have Laucian lead the snake towards her. While that is going on, the giant serpent lunges forward and just narrowly misses taking a bite out of Lau. Turning, Laucian begins to sprint towards Nariya.

There, the Pathfinder has a spear at the ready. She sets the butt of the spear into the ground and stands prepared to take the snake’s charge.

The giant snake, easily 3’ thick, slithers through the grass after its lunch. Laucian reaches Nariya’s position and quickly dives over her. With Laucian’s body blocking Nariya from the snakes’ sight, the serpent cannot avoid the set spear and slams into it.

The great serpent hisses loudly in pain as the spear completely passed through its body. Laucian is back on the offensive a few moments after that. His longsword and Flame Blade combination wound the snake once more and the last strike is the killing one. The giant snake weakens, goes limp, and then simply collapses to the ground.

About 150 yards away, the barge slowly rises above the tall grass. Those on board get to see the tail end of the battle with the giant serpent. The barge is moved closer to pick up Laucian and Nariya.

Kylie:

Lilia flies the barge toward where Laucian and Nariya were last seen. Kylie holds her bow tightly, ready to target fire once they are in range. However, her anticipation proves unnecessary as they see the two elves cut down a giant snake just as the barge comes into range!

Soon, Laucian and Nariya clamber aboard. "Wow! That snake was huge! Great job, both of you!" Kylie says excitedly.

Kylie turns to Sherwood and the others. "I'm thinking it's time we get moving again. We still have Mother Tree to save."

Laucian

Laucian watches as the snake recoils to strike. Reading the snakes intent Laucian reacts purely on instinct as he lashes out with his long sword. His sword bites deeply into the snake as his flameblade follows suit searing the snakes coils and flesh as it moves through its flank.
"Bring it this way!" Nariya calls out to Laucian. the size of it! she thinks as she sees the snake rear up. "Try to get it to chase you and run past me so I can impale it," Nariya instructs.

He soons hears Nariya’s calls to him, distracted he takes his eyes off his opponent for a moment. That moment almost cost him as the snake lunged in snapping air near him as he barely moved out of the way. Seeing an opportunity to run he turn an ran as fast as he could toward Nariya watching her set the spear in the ground.

“Get Ready, it is right behind!” he called out in warning as he veered in closer to his companion he leapt into the air landing in a roll behind her, coming up with both blades out to the side. Turning back he looks on as the snake is impaled on Nariya’s spear but still it struggles and lives.

Wheeling around and advancing with his swords he bites in deeply again with both blades. As his flameblade tears into the snake the snake weakens and falls to the ground in throws of death. He wipes the sweat and hair from his face with the back of his hand and looks to Nariya and smiles, “Nicely done. Seems we make a good tandem.” he adds complementing her never truly seeing her in a fight besides the manticores.

He looks back at the slain serpent from head to tail, “Now I can truly appreciate what trails my people faced when they first came to their lands.” He looks curiously at the beasts head noticing several long fangs. Taking out his dagger he looks at the pommel and notes the snakes wrapping the handle. Squatting down he begins to remove the 4 Largest fangs.

Seeing the Barge flying over the grasslands he gives a wave to them letting them know they are well. They soon board the barge and Kylie,

“Thank you, It is good to see that Onyx found you in time, in case you were needed. Never before have I seen a serpent of that size. Only in Clan legend have I heard of them growing to that size…..” taking out one of the Fangs. “I took a few of its fangs. Perhaps we can fashion daggers out of them.”

Nariya feels a bit of panic as she sees Laucian race towards her. what if he's not fast enough? what if i've caused him to get hurt or worse? She pushes those thoughts from her head and braces for the impact as Laucian dives over. Gripping the spear with all her strength she waits for the blow.

Nariya opens and closes her hands, working out the tension at having her spear driven through the snake. She smiles back at Laucian and says with a small laugh, "We do. You keep getting them to chase you and I'll be there to save you."

He looks back at the slain serpent from head to tail, “Now I can truly appreciate what trails my people faced when they first came to their lands.” He looks curiously at the beasts head noticing several long fangs. Joining Laucian and seeing what he is doing, Nariya says, "We shouldn't stop there. It would be such a waste." Quickly she works at cutting out the best hunks of meat and a large section of skin, all the while quietly saying a hunter's praise to Solonor. Considering the snake's size, she should get quite a bit. Hopefully Laucian, and maybe Sherwood, can help and make this task go quicker since it seems we will be moving out again.

"Thank you," Nariya replies, "and this will add to our food stores for a while too." She says the last indicating the large hunks of snake meat she has cut. Depending of how much room the barge has, she will lay out the skin as well.

Nariya doesn't have the right tools, and hardly the skill, to fashion much from the skin at this time. Hopefully she can store it until a time when it can be used.

Lilia raises the barge and Laucian and Nariya are quickly spotted fighting a large snake! Lilia moves the barge closer, but the battle is over with long before we arrive. The barge sets down again close to the snake.

"Hmm..." Kylie murmurs thoughtfully. "The coffee and candy make sense, but I'm not sure I'm ready to throw away that delicious white stuff. Even so, that will leave three empty pages. I'll fill one with more peaches from Ainsun, and the other two with trail mix." Kylie fetches a couple bags from storage and begins filling them with the coffee and candy. On a whim, she fills one of the pouches in her Girdle with some of the candy as well, putting the remainer in a bag.
Sherwood wrote:“I can’t be sure, but the item in the chest was identified as a Star Crown, while we used a Crown of the Stars to power the barge. The similar names do suggest similar powers. Perhaps the one in the chest is a more powerful version of the one we used?”
"That is a possibility, I suppose. How long would it take you to go try the key and return with the Star Crown? Perhaps we could rise up high and just wait there while you leave and return. I don't know if it would be safe for you to try to return while we were moving..."

Nariya:

Sherwood is a mildly surprise to see Nariya cutting into the snake for meat. Most elves strongly dislike red meats, but some will consume it. Nariya must be among the latter.

Nariya catches Sherwood's look and laughes lightly, "Sure it's not my favorite, but it's wrong to waste it. We might see trying times ahead." The last she adds matter-of-factly.

“A nice snake steak sounds good to me,” Sherwood says, joining in. Sherwood will pull out a kit filled with various size knifes for cutting meat. “We shouldn’t linger too long however. Other predators will be coming this way once they smell the kill.”

"I knew someone would enjoy it," Nariya says. "We'll be gone long before the scent can carry too far."

“This skin is thick and stiff,” Sherwood cautions. “Other than armor, the skin isn’t off much use. You might want to just leave it.”

Nariya sees Sherwood is right as she begins skinning the snake. It's a shame it will be wasted afterall, but she doesn't see herself ever wearing armor that stiff. Protection would be poor at best at the cost of mobility. Since she doesn't have to skin it, that will make the process of getting underway that much faster.

"When I finally got out of Dog Alley, one of the things I promised myself was that I would never have to consume snake or rat again," she says, looking at the meat in distaste. "However, before this trip is done, who knows what we may find ourselves needing to eat." If there is a lot of it, Kylie will consider replacing one of the pages of trail mix with snake meat.

"That must've been a big alley if you had snakes like this," Nariya replies. "Besides this snake was well fed so should be pretty tasty for those who will enjoy such a delicacy," she says the last while eyeing Sherwood.
Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

Lilia:

As the barge rises into the air, Laucian and Nariya are located out amongst the tall grass. It seems that a giant snake has decided to make a meal out of them! Alas, there is no reason for concern as the snake is handily defeated.

Before Lilia knows what is going on, Nariya starts cutting into the snake for meat! Lilia cringes when she sees this and just turns away. She sets the barge down again since it appears we’re going to be here for a while.

Lilia will politely refuse to have any of the snake meat. She’s very much a vegetarian.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Talen:
Kylie giggles. "I know what you mean. Still, it's very rich; I suspect if I ate too much my stomach would feel woozy like when you eat too much candy." The expression on her face makes it clear that this is not something she has enjoyed in the past.
“Woozy?” Talen can’t help but repeat as he is unsure just what Kylie means. “We never really had anything sweet like this in Lost Valley. Are you saying that too much of it is bad for you?”
Kylie turns to Talen. "As I understand it, it makes the wearer aware of any lies spoken in their presence. However, it also makes the wearer unable to speak any falsehoods themselves. Kind of a double-edged sword, in that sense."
“I don’t think I’d like that”, Talen admits. “I mean I wouldn’t like knowing that people were lying to me. I guess I’ll pass on it.”

As the barge rises into the air, Talen stands on top of the cabin to get a better look around.

“There they are! A giant snake is attacking them!”

Realizing that he is out of spell range, Talen goes for his longbow. But the snake is downed before they can arrive, so he puts it away again and climbs back down to the main deck.

Talen isn’t all that put out by seeing the snake being carved up, although the task is a bit too bloody for his tastes.

“Properly prepared its not that bad,” Talen states. “We’ve had it in Lost Valley before.”

Seeing as they are going to be on the ground for a time, Talen climbs back up on the cabin roof to keep an eye on things.

Valena:

Valena keeps her bow ready and her eyes open as they barge moves again. Talen calls out that he’s spotted something and Valena locks in on the target. But the combat has already been settled.

The sight of the snake being cut up doesn’t bother Valena at all. “While it is true that we elves do not eat much in the way of meat, we followers of Ehlonna have tasted it before. Its part of wilderness survival training. Simply put you might find yourself with nothing else to eat, so we have become familiar with its taste.”

While the kill is being cleaned, Valena will continue to stand guard and will have a tiny portion of the meat when it’s prepared.

“Maybe an hour at most,” Sherwood guesses. “I’ve teleported onto moving ships before, but nothing going this fast. As is the case with many mage spells, knowledge is the key here. Distance is not a factor in teleporting, knowing where you are arriving at is. Given what we found on the wreck, I’m not sure if the Star Crown would be all that beneficial to our current quest. We appear to have the means to reach the Sylvan Realm in a matter of days. I’m not fond of deciphering the functions of unknown magic items while in the field. It’s waited in that chest for a long time. A little while longer isn’t going to make that much of a difference.”
Nariya catches Sherwood's look and laughs lightly, "Sure it's not my favorite, but it's wrong to waste it. We might see trying times ahead." The last she adds matter-of-factly.
“Well, snake is my favorite meat either, but it’ll do in a pinch. It’s like Valena said, sometimes you not have anything else to eat. We can use some seasoning to improve the taste.”

"Really? Wow," Kylie replies, amazed by the thought of growing up without sweets of any kind. "Eating too much sweet stuff can make your stomach feel ill for a few hours. Not as bad as having a flu or anything like that, but definitely uncomfortable."
Talen wrote:“I don’t think I’d like that”, Talen admits. “I mean I wouldn’t like knowing that people were lying to me. I guess I’ll pass on it.”

"Yeah, me neither," Kylie says, figuring that Talen's real objection is more like her own. Seems like the kind of item that would only be favored by the real goody-two-shoes types...

Lia looks about as the Barge raises up her crossbow tight within her grip. Her brother spots sign of them and Lia rushes to the other side of the barge to see if she can be of any help. There she catches the ensuing battle of her companions and a giant Serpent!

With the range to great for her to help she says a silent pray to Eillistraee to watch over her friends and to see them through.

The two serpent slayers begin to rip the snake apart taking the flesh for food.
“That’s about the biggest land snake I’ve ever seen,” Sherwood agrees
.
“A nice snake steak sounds good to me,” Sherwood says, joining in. Sherwood will pull out a kit filled with various size knifes for cutting meat. “We shouldn’t linger too long however. Other predators will be coming this way once they smell the kill.”
“Properly prepared its not that bad,” Talen states. “We’ve had it in Lost Valley before.”

“Nor that I have seen. We have had the dish but I never worked up the nerve to try it. What does it taste like?” she asks the others as she takes up a guard position opposite to Valena. When prepared Lia will taste a portion of the meat.
Kylie looks at the fang with interest. "Those would make unique daggers. Rather intimidating too, I would think."
“Would you use the daggers or would they be more of a keepsake?” she asks.
"When I finally got out of Dog Alley, one of the things I promised myself was that I would never have to consume snake or rat again," she says, looking at the meat in distaste. “You seen snakes this large in your home?” she asks in confusion. “Perhaps it tastes better then the snake you have had in the past.”

Nariya opens and closes her hands, working out the tension at having her spear driven through the snake. She smiles back at Laucian and says with a small laugh, "We do. You keep getting them to chase you and I'll be there to save you."
Laucian laughs lightly at Nariya’s jest. “As long as you do that to them every time, I don’t mind being the bait." noticing her hand. "Is your hand alright?"
Kylie looks at the fang with interest. "Those would make unique daggers. Rather intimidating too, I would think."

“Would you use the daggers or would they be more of a keepsake?” she asks.
“I thought so to. It will be interesting to see if they can be fashioned. Regardless they will be a nice addition to my weapons.” he regards Lia’s question and adds. “If they can be made I think I would keep one as a memento the others I would use. “

When offered the snake meat, Laucian will eat sparingly of it and take some raw to Onyx.
When he returns to the barge he will find Onyx and sit next to him. Praising and petting him for
a job well done.

Post Continued:

The giant snake that tried to make a meal out of Laucian and Nariya has become a meal in itself. Several slabs of meal are carved from the carcass and stored for later consumption. Sherwood provides the last few spells to completely power the Spell Engine. The barge is raised up a foot on the ground and the men manually turn the barge so that it facing the correct direction. Lilia uses the Starmap to judge the right course.

Once that is done, Lilia has the barge rise high into the air once more. At Sherwood's direction, Lilia takes the barge up higher than you've ever had it before. The area around the barge maintains a comfortable temperature and there is no wind. Winter clothing will not be required.

The barge begins to move forward and higher at the same time. Lake Amsorak grows smaller and smaller and from this vantage point much of the continent comes into view.

Looking back, Sherwood will point out Elcadan, Corunglain, the Cynalon capital of Alexandria and even King's Port to the south. The Great Southern Sea can be seen making Lake Amsorak seem little more than a puddle in comparison.

Looking north, the Silver Sierra's sprawl out far below. To the north of the Dorwynn Elfholds is a vast area of grassy plains. To the north and west of the Broken Lands are many small valleys that all lead to a large plateau.

Once clear of the mountains and past the plateau you're in Vassa airspace. The Realm of Vassa occupies much of the middle of the continent. The land is unremarkable, primarily being plains and swamp with the occasional forest. It seems like a very unattractive and gloomy land. A huge lake that is many times larger than Lake Amsorak dominates the northwestern part of Vassa. No significant cities are noted.

The barge continues to rise and small details can no longer be seen from below. Far away on the other side of Vassa another mountain range can be seen. Beyond it lies another ocean that Sherwood calls the Sea of Brun, with Brun being the name of the continent where Cynalon is located.

Further to the north you can see the land end and great glaciers of ice come into being. The ice coats everything for as far as you can see to the north. Best guess would place the Sylvan Realm at least two thousand miles away from the Elfholds.

The days roll past without incident. The barge is flying higher then even the birds and moves above the clouds themselves. No living thing is seen up this high.

With little else to do, attention turns to the diary that was found in the chest with the dresses and the book of goodies. Multiple Comprehend Languages spells are needed to decipher the entire book.

The diary belonged to an elf maiden by the name of Marianita Lucia de Leon y Valdez who was a member of Clan Belcadiz. None of you have ever heard of a Clan Belcadiz. Lady Marianita was an Ambassador to Alphatia representing a placed called Glantri. Likewise, non here have ever heard of Glantri.

As you read along a very disturbing tale is revealed. It seems that Alphatia was in the grips of a civil war. Emperor Alphaks had succumbed to the power of a magic item called the "Crown of Eternal Night" and became a lich. Admiral Nylsara of the Alphatian Navy was actively opposing him. The contents of the chest were being delivered into her hands for use during the war.

The Star Crown is described as a powerful magic item that only a mage could make full use of. It has the same powers as a Crown of the Stars, but many more in addition to that. The Crown also bestows the powers of a Necklace of Adaptation, a Ring of Protection, a Talisman of Memorization, and a Ring of Wizardry. It also enhances the senses and intelligence of the wearer and provides some measure of magic resistance. Lady Marianita describes the Crown as being a collection of eight star sapphires that whirls about the mages head much like Ioun Stones would do.

Lady Marianita's vessel sailed from Glantri to Arret in order to deliver the Star Crown to Admiral Nylsara. It is clear from the wreckage that the delivery was never made. The magical chest that held the Star Crown was thrown clear from the wreckage and tumbled all the way down the mountains where it was eventually found. Years later in ended up in Lothar's hands in Twin Forks where the Guardians came across it.

On the morning of the sixth day of flight you can finally see the other side of the mountains on the far side of Vassa. The Sylvan Realm comes into view! It is a massive forested area, much like the Elfholds. It's about 80 miles across to the north and south and 100 miles wide. It's a thick blanket of forest that allows very little to be seen beneath it.

The Sylvan Realm is nestled on a parcel of land surrounded by barriers on most sides. To the north and east are high mountains. To the northwest is a swamp with the Sea of Brun to the West. There are several areas of plains between the forest and the mountains, with a large area of going to the south between the mountains and the sea. Five rocky spires, the largest being some ten miles across, rise out of the thick canopy of forest.

Sherwood slows the barge's progress down and creates an invisible field around it so that you can safely examine the Sylvan Realm. The first thing you note is that there doesn't seem to be any people in the forest, but that isn't too surprising. It's just hard to see beneath the trees.

There is a large clearing within the forest, just south of its center. The clearing is some ten miles wide and nearly that far across.

Ominously, there are seven spots where it appears that the trees have been cut down. These areas are nearly 2 miles wide and stand out when seen overhead.

Two major rivers flow through the Sylvan Realm. The first comes out of the mountains on the southern side. It winds its way through the realm and flows out into the sea. One large island is noted in this river. The second river comes from the northern side of the mountains. It flows about a third of the way into the Realm and then turns west. The river forks with one branch leading to the swamp and the other to the sea.

Your eyes are drawn to movement down below! A squad of wyverns carrying riders flies into sight! As you watch the patrol flies in a pattern that covers much of the Realm. Eventually you watch them return to their base. On the top of a small hill surrounded by a palisade are nearly a dozen buildings. The wyverns land here and are stabled. The wyvern riders seem to be human, but numerous orcs are seen in the camp!

In the middle of the camp there is a tall pole from which a flag hangs. The flag depicts a black moon with a single eye upon in on a field of blood red. More alarmingly, you can see that there is more than one of these wyvern patrol camps. In fact there are eleven of them encircling the Sylvan Realm.

The first of these camps is to the north of the Realm at the base of the mountains. They circle clockwise around the Realm following the foothills. The last three of these camps are on the plains to the south of the Realm between the sea and the mountains.

The sunlight reflects off of something shiny down below. Moving closer to get a better look, you can see what appears to be a large platform composed of crystal. It seems out of place among the elfin forest.

To Save Mother Tree!

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:
Lia wrote:“You seen snakes this large in your home?” she asks in confusion. “Perhaps it tastes better then the snake you have had in the past.”
"No," Kylie replies with a giggle at the image of this giant snake trying to squeeze into the tiny hovel they had called home. "As I told Nariya, we had snakes, just not this big. As for the taste, it's more the principle of the thing, though I realize that may change before this trip is through."
“I thought so to. It will be interesting to see if they can be fashioned. Regardless they will be a nice addition to my weapons.” he regards Lia’s question and adds. “If they can be made I think I would keep one as a memento the others I would use. “
Kylie nods. "That seems like a good idea. Hopefully, it will work out as you desire."

Seeing that there is plenty of snake meat, Kylie clears the trail mix from one of the pages she just filled in the book and inserts a store of the meat. That way, they'll have it for later if needed.

It's not long before they're on their way again. This time, they fly extremely high, such that making out individual trees is difficult, much less animals or sentients on the ground. Looking over the side, Kylie gets a bit of vertigo, and decides to stay well back from the edge as they fly.

Kylie invests time in deciphering the diary that was found in the box. She reads aloud if anyone expresses an interest in hearing it. Kylie asks the other elves in the party if they have ever heard of this Clan Belcadiz, but gets only negative responses. Not even Sherwood seems aware of this Glantri place.

Nevertheless, the story contained therein is riveting. It explains a lot about the downfall of Alphatia. Perhaps it would have turned out differently if the Star Crown had reached this Admiral Nylsara. And the Crown! Truly it is one of the most powerful artifacts she's ever heard of.

Kylie goes to Sherwood and reads him the passage about the Star Crown. "If this artifact is really this powerful, perhaps we should fetch it and take it with us. It might do a lot to better our chances of success on this mission."

When not busy with the diary, Kylie focusses on trying to learn Alphatian from the book Lilia provided. As opportunities arrise, she will practice what she has learned with Lilia or Talen. At first, she considers getting the other women together to decide what to do with the dresses she found in the box. However, it occurs to her that it may be a better idea to leave that until they return to civilization. Thus, she folds them carefully and puts them back into the chest.

To Save Mother Tree!

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

They have been travelling for more than a week when they finally pass the mountains that separate Vassa from the Sylvan Realm. After the unrelenting grimness and vast emptiness of Vassa, the sight of the Sylvan Realm spreading out below them nearly takes Kylie's breath away. Despite the expected danger, the land is quite beautiful.

Sherwood wisely gives them a chance to explore the region from the air, using the Spell Engine's invisibility power to allow them to do so unseen. As they perform their initial survey of the Realm, Kylie envisions the Elven Star Chart to see if she can draw any connections between the two.

Not surprisingly, the Sylvan Realm is mostly one large forest. There are a few clearings, and plains along the edges here and there. Also to be seen are several rocky hillocks rising out of the forest. One of them sports a crater and looks like it may be - or have been - a volcano.

There are a number of small clearings, each nearly circular. An ugly suspicion grows in Kylie's mind and she turns to Sherwood. "Those small clearings down there. Do you think it reasonable to assume that is where the Trees of Life were? Might the Mother Tree have been in that center one?" she asks, pointing to the one most nearly in the middle of the forest.

Similarly, the shiny, possibly-crystaline platform also catches her eye. She looks around at her companions. "Does anyone have any idea what that platform structure might be?"

The most immediate concern are the encampments around the Realm. Between the wyvern riders and the orcs, it seems the forest is well guarded. "Somehow, we're going to have to find a way past all of those guards," Kylie says, addressing the group once again. "I see two possible ways. One would be to sneak by, using this barge's invisibility shield. At the very least, we probably want to do some more detailed scouting that way. Eventually, I think we are going to have to do some searching on foot, which would leave the possibility of being spotted by patrols.

"The other option would be to try to take out the encampments. We could descend on them one at a time - perhaps one or two a day, giving us time to renew our spells inbetween - and bombard them with spells and arrows. We could probably do a lot of damage in a short time, without giving time for reinforcements to show up.

"Speaking of further scouting, could we get a closer look at that island in the southern river, the crystal platform and the crater of what looks like it might be a volcano?"

Laucian

As they depart Laucian stands near the edge of the barge. With bow in hand he surveys the land before him Watching for any trouble as the ground and trees shrink in the distance as it climbs higher and higher. Cities in the distance and wide areas of wilderness stretch for as far as he can see. A smile comes to his face as he takes it all in. He has seen maps of this land but nothing can compare to the view at hand.

As Kylie casts her spell to unravel the mysteries of the Diary Laucian sits relatively close by making arrows to pass the time.

“This sounds somehow familiar….to another tale,” placing down a finished arrow, “The Tale Sherwood spoke of concerning the Fellowship of Mages.” he adds thoughtfully. Having a trouble with the details of the tale. “Weren’t they also turned into lichs?” he asks curiously to Sherwood and Lilia.

After several days travel through the heavens the lands of the Slyvan realm come into view.

One resounding thought echoes through Laucian’s head. ‘Home, battered and torn but their ancestral home none the less’

Kylie’s questions draws him out from his thoughts,
Similarly, the shiny, possibly-crystaline platform also catches her eye. She looks around at her companions. "Does anyone have any idea what that platform structure might be?"
His experience among the Guardians comes to him as he gazes at the crystal Platform. “Only once have I seen a structure of similar making to this. While escaping from Ember’s, a red dragons, domain, I witnessed a crystal quartz fortress fall apart. If I had to guess The one behind this is within or near there and more then likely a mage.”
The most immediate concern are the encampments around the Realm. Between the wyvern riders and the orcs, it seems the forest is well guarded. "Somehow, we're going to have to find a way past all of those guards," Kylie says, addressing the group once again. "I see two possible ways. We could probably do a lot of damage in a short time, without giving time for reinforcements to show up.
“By which patrols,” he asks curiously. “The Wyrven riders or the ones we have not seen yet? Those woods are quite thick probably thicker then the Elfholds themselves. The forest floor is veiled from the canopy of the trees, Do not overlook that Kylie. There maybe far more patrols then the flyers, There is still much we can learn, We have only seen one patrol and this day is not yet over. Let us see just how active they are.”

Looking out across the landscape he spots the patrol camps among the plains mountains and to the north. “If we are to attack a patrol camp let us observe them for a time. Look there. The Wyrvens are being stabled and the riders depart.”

"Seems there are about a dozen wyrvens per patrol." running the numbers through his head.

“If we are to land then let us do so where the imprint of the barge cannot be seen from above or by land. If it is berthed on the grasslands their scouts will surely see the sign of our passing.”

"Perhaps we could keep to the rivers, if they are calm enough."

Lia wrote:“Nor that I have seen. We have had the dish but I never worked up the nerve to try it. What does it taste like?” she asks the others as she takes up a guard position opposite to Valena. When prepared Lia will taste a portion of the meat.
“Its not one of your finer meats,” Sherwood explains. “Much of its taste comes from how you season it. Its ideal for stews where it can absorb the tastes of the foods around it. Its not my ideal meal, but will do in a pinch.”

The barge takes flight once more and this time it’s for a much longer duration. At this altitude there’s no need for constant watch. There’s a lot of spare time to waste. Comprehend Language spells are used to decipher the diary.
“What a very unusual name. It sounds somewhat similar to the long names used by the inhabitants of Zakhara. Maybe this Elfin Clan is based in that area? Although it is strange that we are unfamiliar with Glantri, as Cynalon lies in between them and Alphatia. Obviously this writing is in a variation of elfish we are unfamiliar with.”

The diary reveals the ships mission. It was transporting the Star Crown to an Alphatian Admiral during a time of Civil War. The Alphatians have not be very forthcoming about their history, so he does not know when this Civil War took place.
Laucian wrote:“This sounds somehow familiar… to another tale,” placing down a finished arrow, “The Tale Sherwood spoke of concerning the Fellowship of Mages.” he adds thoughtfully. Having a trouble with the details of the tale. “Weren’t they also turned into lichs?” he asks curiously to Sherwood and Lilia.
“It was the Crowns of Eternal Night that created the Lich Lords. I have to wonder if the Crown the diary refers to affecting the Emperor was one of those. Things evil artifacts seem to have been around for a very long time.”

The diaries description of the Star Crown reveals that it is far more powerful than first imagined. It’s nearly an artifact on its own. “To think something this powerful ended up in the hands of a bandit like Lothar. I’m beginning to understand why it was placed in such a highly protective chest.”
Kylie goes to Sherwood and reads him the passage about the Star Crown. "If this artifact is really this powerful, perhaps we should fetch it and take it with us. It might do a lot to better our chances of success on this mission."
“That seems reasonable. I’ll teleport to Karn’s Keep with the key and use Lifeshield to return.”

Eventually we reach the Sylvan Realm. It seems peaceful from high above, but much like the Elfholds you cannot see what lies beneath the treetops. Sherwood slows the barge’s speed down and makes it invisible. They slowly begin to scout the area out.

Similarly, the shiny, possibly-crystalline platform also catches her eye. She looks around at her companions. "Does anyone have any idea what that platform structure might be?"
“Its possible. We can go down and take a closer look. That central area is close to the crystalline construct we saw. We can check both of them out at the same time. It seems very out of place amongst the forest.”
Kylie wrote:The most immediate concern is the encampments around the Realm.
“I’m not sure that’s going to be that big of a concern right now. Wyvern’s are not the fleetest of creatures. I would estimate that they can only go about twenty miles or so from those camps before being forced to return. The forest is more than thick enough that it will shield us overhead. We’ll just have to be careful in the clearings.”

(The patrol covering the entire Realm in the post is inaccurate, as Wyvern’s just don’t have that range. They can cover about twenty miles in all directions around those outposts.)
Kylie wrote:"The other option would be to try to take out the encampments. We could descend on them one at a time - perhaps one or two a day, giving us time to renew our spells inbetween - and bombard them with spells and arrows. We could probably do a lot of damage in a short time, without giving time for reinforcements to show up. “

“That is an option. I have access to many spells that would cause wide scale damage. I would imagine that casting a Cloudkill upwind of one of those bases would be devastating. But for now let’s land near that crystalline object. We’ve been airborne for nearly a week and I’m sure we all could use some solid ground underneath us. We can land the barge, but keep it invisible for now. It won’t drain as much power as our continued flight did. If the area seems safe, we’ll send scouts to the clearing to the south.”

“Let’s get ready to land.”
I do what is necessary.

"No," Kylie replies with a giggle at the image of this giant snake trying to squeeze into the tiny hovel they had called home. "As I told Nariya, we had snakes, just not this big. As for the taste, it's more the principle of the thing, though I realize that may change before this trip is through."
“I understand. Though have you ever looked at it as ,you maybe the better off for it?” she asks curiously.

Lia looks out as the barge takes flight with great curiosity. Sherwood begins to point out different cities and towns. “These lands are tremendous. How long does it usually take to get from one city to another?” but then she catches sight of the great sea to the south. Her eyes widen in disbelief and for a time she is quiet merely taking it all in.

“What are those things?” she asks, “They look like minature dragons!” Then her eyes fall upon the standard baring a black moon with a single eye with a blood red background. “I have never seen a standard such as that….Is it a depiction of a Deity or the one they follow?” she asks curiously to those around them

Lilia:
Looking back, Sherwood will point out Elcadan, Corunglain, the Cynalon capital of Alexandria and even King's Port to the south. The Great Southern Sea can be seen making Lake Amsorak seem little more than a puddle in comparison.
The Elf Maiden takes in the view. Her beloved home is seen for one last time before beginning their journey north. The entire landscape comes into view as we go higher then she ever imagined possible. The land seemed so big down there and so small from up here.
Sherwood wrote:“What a very unusual name.

“Perhaps this Clan Belcadiz went their own way during the great migration and didn’t settle with the others in the Sylvan Realm? That could explain why their language is similar, but different and why we haven’t heard of them before. However, that doesn’t explain why they would have access to such powerful magic items that we Dorwynn elves hadn’t even heard of before. That does seem strange. Regardless, I do find it comforting that there are others of our kind out there in the world.”

Lilia listens to the diaries tale with great interest. “I would love to possess such a powerful magic item! This Admiral Nylsara must have been a powerful sorceress and friend to the Belcadiz elves to warrant such a wondrous gift. To imagine that its been locked away in a chest for all these years. All the hands it must have passed through who never knew what they possessed.”
Laucian wrote:“This sounds somehow familiar… to another tale,” placing down a finished arrow, “The Tale Sherwood spoke of concerning the Fellowship of Mages.” he adds thoughtfully. Having a trouble with the details of the tale. “Weren’t they also turned into liches?” he asks curiously to Sherwood and Lilia.
Sherwood wrote:“It was the Crowns of Eternal Night that created the Lich Lords. I have to wonder if the Crown the diary refers to affecting the Emperor was one of those. Things evil artifacts seem to have been around for a very long time.”
“It seems that way,” Lilia agrees. “The first we knew of the Crowns had them in the hands of Zhengyi, the Witch-King of Vassa. It was he who gave them to those mages who became the Lich Lords. Somehow there is now a connection to the Witch-King and to this Emperor Alphaks. There seems to be more history to these Crowns than scholars at first thought.”

Lilia will happily help Kylie and Talen as they learn the Alphatian tongue. It is a diversion away from the monotony of the long flight.

At last the Sylvan Realm comes into view and Lilia’s heart soars. “It is good to see our ancestral home. At least much of it seems to be intact.”
Laucian wrote:His experience among the Guardians comes to him as he gazes at the crystal Platform. “Only once have I seen a structure of similar making to this. While escaping from Ember’s, a red dragons, domain, I witnessed a crystal quartz fortress fall apart. If I had to guess the one behind this is within or near there and more then likely a mage.”
“Perhaps,” Lilia considers. “But do not forget that we elves are capable of many wondrous engineering feats on our own. And there are many notable elfin mages too. I guess what I’m saying is that the Crystaline Structure could be of elfin manufacture. We can’t automatically assume that is there due to enemy actions.”
Kylie wrote:There are a number of small clearings, each nearly circular.
“According to legend, the Trees of Life in the Elfholds originated from branches from the Mother Tree. The Elfhold trees were planted where they are now. They were not uprooted and moved. But as you say, perhaps the center area was the location of the Mother Tree. It is logical for it to have a central location so that its power could affect all of the forest around it.”

“No, I fear those other clearings are where the invaders cut trees down. It can’t help but wonder if any of those trees had elves sleeping within them? How many have died here?”

Lilia is more than ready to land and feel solid ground underneath her feet once more. Flight used to be an interesting diversion, but with the last week it seems tiresome.

Talen

Post by Talen »

Talen:
"Really? Wow," Kylie replies, amazed by the thought of growing up without sweets of any kind. "Eating too much sweet stuff can make your stomach feel ill for a few hours. Not as bad as having a flu or anything like that, but definitely uncomfortable."
“That’s unfortunate,” Talen laments. “I’ll try not to eat too much then. But I wonder how much is too much?”

The trip is exciting at first, but then as the days pass it becomes more and more boring. There are some diversions such as learning Alphatian, but no real room to practice with weapons and even with spells.

One day Talen is studying his spell book with Kylie sitting close by. Putting his book down, Talen says to Kylie in a low voice. “Can I ask you a question? Do you find this easy?”

(Meaning the understanding of magic and learning new spells.)

“It just seems so hard to me. Back at Karn’s Keep there were so many spells I tried to learn, but I just couldn’t understand them. It’s very frustrating. S I was wondering if everyone goes through this or was it just me? Maybe I’m not cut out to follow the magic tradition of the human side of my family.”

Finally the Sylvan Realms come into view! It is a magnificent sight, reminding him of the first time he was in the Elfholds. But there is danger too! Riders on top of flying monsters are seen as are orcs. “Do you think those riders and the orcs are the enemy? Or is the enemy already inside the elf lands?”

Talen is happy to let Sherwood continue to guide us and even happier to hear that we will soon be landing!

“I can help do some scouting, cousin. I may not know my way around the woods like our Rangers can, but I can move quietly and unseen.”

Valena:

“I wouldn’t worry about food spoiling. The Lady of the Forests grants me a spell that will restore food that has rotted. Very little will go to waste.”

Valena relaxes for the most part during the long voyage. She spends her mornings going through her devotions to the Lady of the Forests. Much of her day is spent maintaining her bow and arrows. She’ll spend much time playing with Onyx and enjoying the kitten’s company.

Like most everyone else, she’s quite eager for this long flight to end. Valena’s features brighten noticeably upon seeing the Sylvan Realm.

“It will be exciting to explore the land of our forefathers!”

Upon hearing Lia’s question about the Wyvern’s, Valena will say, “They are flying monsters, Lia. They don’t have breath fire, but they have a poisonous stinger at the end of their tails. They can be dangerous and deadly.”

Once on the ground, Valena will have her bow with an arrow nocked at the ready. She’ll go forth in the direction indicated and secure the perimeter.

Nariya:

The view is incredible as Nariya looks over the land. All those places to see and we have to fly over them she thinks to herself. She has to keep reminding herself that time is too short to make the trip overland.

Nariya listens to the story since there is very little to do. She hasn't heard of a clan Belcadiz before, but her knowledge of the clans is more limited than the others.

During this time Nariya evens finds herself considering the possiblity of owning one of those dresses if it looks right on her. She must be bored!

“Let’s get ready to land.”

Nariya almost lets out a cheer of excitement when she hears Sherwood say this. Even as they were passing over the Sylvan realm and watching the wyvern riders, she felt as if she was in a haze. Far too many days spent away from feeling the earth beneath her feet.

Seemingly Lilia and the rest are also eager to be on the ground once more. Nariya readies her bow and will scout out the area once the barge has landed.
Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

To Save Mother Tree!

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:
Talen wrote:“That’s unfortunate,” Talen laments. “I’ll try not to eat too much then. But I wonder how much is too much?”
Kylie shrugs. "The only way to find out for sure may be to experience it, Talen. On the other hand, I would advise taking it slow."
Lia wrote:“I understand. Though have you ever looked at it as ,you maybe the better off for it?” she asks curiously.
"Uhm, I not sure I understand what you mean, Lia. Certainly, I didn't starve to death, so I'm certainly better off in that way. But otherwise...?"
Valena wrote:“I wouldn’t worry about food spoiling. The Lady of the Forests grants me a spell that will restore food that has rotted. Very little will go to waste.”
"No doubt you are right, Valena. Still, why waste spells on something that can be taken care of without the need to use them? Besides, the spell might not be available when it's needed."
Sherwood wrote:“What a very unusual name.
"Zakhara? Maybe we should ask Yusef about it next time we see him. He may know something of the lands around Zakhara as well as his mother's homeland."

Kylie listens as Laucian, Sherwood and Lilia discuss the crowns and their history, but she has nothing to add.
Sherwood wrote:“That seems reasonable. I’ll teleport to Karn’s Keep with the key and use Lifeshield to return.”

"Would it be safer for you, Sherwood, if we stopped the barge and waited here in midair for you to return? Or would it be just as easy if we kept going?"

Between the book and Lilia's assistance, Kylie feels like she is making good progress on learning this Alphatian language. Besides, it gives her something to do during the long days of travel.
Talen wrote:One day Talen is studying his spell book with Kylie sitting close by. Putting his book down, Talen says to Kylie in a low voice. “Can I ask you a question? Do you find this easy?”

"Easy?" Kylie asks with a snort. "I wish it were so."
Talen wrote:“It just seems so hard to me. Back at Karn’s Keep there were so many spells I tried to learn, but I just couldn’t understand them. It’s very frustrating. So I was wondering if everyone goes through this or was it just me? Maybe I’m not cut out to follow the magic tradition of the human side of my family.”

"I wouldn't worry too much, Talen. I suspect it's difficult for most aspiring mages. If it were easy, there would be a whole lot more wizards in the world. There may be a few true prodigies who breeze through this stuff, but I doubt they are common."

===

Kylie is somewhat surprised when Lia admits to not knowing what the wyverns are. Then again, perhaps they don't live near the valley where Lia and Talen grew up. Valena explains a little about them. "And they're called wyverns," Kylie adds, just so that Lia will know the proper name for the beasts. "Otherwise, Valena pretty much covered what you need to know about them."
Lilia wrote:“According to legend, the Trees of Life in the Elfholds originated from branches from the Mother Tree.

Kylie nods as Lilia fills her in. "I had just thought that they might have planted some branches from the Mother Tree here as well, in a similar fashion to those in the Elfholds. Of course, if they cut down trees with elves inside, that would be just a dire. I didn't know that this was a possibility, Lilia. Elves have some way of merging with trees?"

In reply to her question, Laucian suggests that the crystal platform was created by a mage, like the one who created a crystal fortress he had visited earlier. Lilia isn't so sure. Unfortunately, no one seems to have much idea of its purpose. Sherwood suggests that they go down and take a good look around the structure and the small central clearing.

"I think it's worth it to try to learn something about where the Mother Tree may have gone."
Laucian wrote:“By which patrols,” he asks curiously.
Sherwood seems to agree with Laucian that flying patrols are not a significant concern. "Originally, my thought was the wyvern and their riders, but you would know far more of the forest than I. Still, with as many orcs as we have seen, I think we should assume that there are foot patrols as well. Of course, it's a very big forest, so it may be possible to avoid the patrols."
Sherwood wrote:“That is an option.
"If we do decide to attack the encampments, using less flashy spells like your Cloudkill would be less likely to alert the other encampments. But you're right, we can deal with that later when we have a better idea what we're dealing with." Many of the others express their desire to be back on the ground after flying for so long, and Kylie finds that she has to agree. This has all been a very strange trip so far.
Laucian wrote:“If we are to land then let us do so where the imprint of the barge cannot be seen from above or by land. If it is berthed on the grasslands their scouts will surely see the sign of our passing.”

"Perhaps we could keep to the rivers, if they are calm enough."
"That sounds like an excellent idea, Laucian. We would need to secure it somehow so that it didn't float downstream, but that shouldn't be too difficult."
Talen wrote:“I can help do some scouting, cousin. I may not know my way around the woods like our Rangers can, but I can move quietly and unseen.”
"Talen brings up a good point," Kylie says. "We should probably split up into multiple groups. It would probably be prudent to have at least a couple people stay with the barge. It might also make sense for the scouting to be done by those who are skilled in stealth, which is probably most of this group. We should have enough for at least two groups of scouts, which would allow us to survey the area more efficiently."

I believe those are a symbol for swamps, though I haven't seen it in that color before.

Elves merging with trees was discussed back in Elfquest #1. Check out the last update in that post when you meet the Elfin King.

Also, the symbols on blue near the top left of the map is swamp lands.
