Crucible #1 - "Just Another Saturday in San Diego"
It is another typically beautiful day in San Diego, California. Temperatures are in the mid-seventies and there is not a cloud in the sky. The Fourth of July holiday was yesterday, making this a long holiday weekend. With its numerous attractions, the streets of San Diego are busy on this Saturday afternoon.
While places like the San Diego Zoo and SeaWorld are popular tourist attractions, today you've gone shopping at the Horton Plaza. Featuring over one hundred and thirty specialty shops and restaurants, movie theaters and even live theater, the Horton Plaza has something for everyone.
Opening less than a year ago, the Horton Plaza was the cornerstone for the redevelopment of the Gaslight District of Downtown San Diego. What was once a seedy, downtrodden part of town has been upgraded and remodeled into a modern shopping complex. Horton Plaza is an open-air mall with plenty of palm trees and colorful plantings to enhance visual appeal. The complex was designed to combine the aesthetic elements of historic San Diego, a European marketplace, and an amusement park.
First time visitors to the Horton Plaza find themselves frequently lost in the almost maze-like array of shops. The plaza itself is unbalanced with five staggered levels, three on one side and two on the other with many open plazas in-between the two sides. It's a veritable wonderland of colorful pathways and alcoves. It's also a huge place, covering almost seven city blocks. Today, visitors to Horton's Plaza will be witnesses to something that they will never forget.
Passersby in one of the open plazas are shocked when a collection of unusual beings simply appears out of nowhere among them. Near the middle of the group is an unattractive man dressed in black with a hooded cloak. His hair is long and ghastly white, his body unusually thin. He carries a small scythe in one hand.
"Yes, this will do nicely," the man in black intones. "Gather up the sacrifices. The mystic forces will be in precise alignment in fifteen minutes! We must not keep the Nether Lord waiting! Power will be mine at last!"
The collections of beings around the man in black hold for a second before moving into action. Among them is a man that is demonic in appearance, including dusty red skin, barbed tail, bat-like wings, and horns emerging from his skull. Thick hair grows around his lower legs and arms. His only article of clothing is a large brown belt that supports a loincloth.
"Power will be ours, Affrighter," the demonic figure corrects as he grabs two people out of the crowd.
"Of course, Denier, of course," Affrighter eagerly agrees.
Beside the demonic Denier is a man-shaped being that glows softly and is translucent. He resembles a walking, glowing ruby. As he moves towards the stunned onlookers, his right hand morphs into a red-glowing chainsaw!
"Let's get busy!", the translucent man gloats with glee. "Then we slice-n-dice them real good!
"Hrunn!", another of the new arrivals grunts. This one also dressed in all black. A large, billowy cape and hat obscured most of his features. What could be seen of his face was green in color and skull-like in appearance. His eyes glowed a sinister red. Many in the crowd recognized the Monster and were very much afraid. The Monster herded several terrified individuals towards Affrighter. More sacrifices for the mad man.
The next member of the group was easily the least frightening of the bunch. It was an almost unearthly beautiful blond haired woman wearing an extremely skimpy outfit that left little to the imagination. She wore shiny red high boots with platform soles and stiletto heels. With this she wore a thin one-piece string swimsuit that just barely covered her more than ample chest.
"What a lovely day for a sacrifice," the woman said with a giggle and a mischievous grin locked on her gorgeous face. "I do so love bringing excitement into the lives of otherwise dull and ordinary people!"
"Go on Leech," the woman in red directed toward the last of the group. "Go and make momma proud!"
The being known as Leech was hideous to behold. His skin was mottled purple in color with dark patches. While humanoid in appearance, the Leech's arms and legs ended in giant suckers instead of hands and feet.
The Leech grunted his understanding of his mistress' commands and moved quickly into the shade and out of the sun. He grabbed a young woman shopper at random. She screamed at the Leech's touch and slumped into his arms, her vitality having been drained away.
In short order, thirteen victims had been captured by the bizarre collection of villains. They were forced into a large mystic circle that the woman in red quickly drew on the floor. Affrighter caused tremendous fear to rise up in the thirteen victims, rooting them in place. The woman in red cast a magical spell erecting a force field around the circle and the sacrifices. By now the other shoppers had all fled.
Mall Security was called onto the scene along with the San Diego police. Neither was a match for the power assembled here. Both were driven off after a very short battle. Several of the police and security force were slain with insane glee by the red glowing man, who was called Hellfire by the Denier.
"Hey there! I'm Devilspawn," the woman in red said, introducing herself to the terrified sacrifices while she drew the mystic circle. "Aren't I just the cutest thing you've ever seen?"
"I bet you're all wondering just what's going on here. Well, you should feel real honored and all. We're going to use your life force to summon the Nether Lord here to Earth! Just think of it! You won't ever have to worry about your humdrum boring lives ever again!"
"Five minutes until the proper alignment!", Affrighter called out to Devilspawn. "Soon the Nether Lord will roam this world and the power of my birthright shall be unleashed!"
In a much lower voice, Devilspawn added, "That old poop Affrighter thinks he's the one who's gonna get all the power. Not if my daddy has something to say about it!" Devilspawn casts a glance at the Denier, suggesting that the demonic man is her parent. "But that's just between you and me! So, just sit tight and enjoy the show! Its gonna be one wild ride!"
Meanwhile, outside Horton Plaza, a strange saucer shaped object streaked in from over the ocean into San Diego. It slowed in its approach until it is only hovering. Traffic comes to a screeching halt as motorists spot the strange aircraft. Reaching the busy intersection of 1st Avenue and Broadway, the craft begins to descend.
Suddenly, an armored figure emerges from a hatch on the top of the craft. The armor is dark red in color with golden accessories. The armored figure flies out of the saucer and then down below to the street. Reaching street level, the figure shoves several cars out of the way, paying little attention to those people inside the vehicles. With a place to land secured, the armored figure flies up into the air once more and back inside the saucer.
The saucer lands with a great blast of air, forcing those onlookers still further away. The craft then powers down and is silent. It sits in front of the bus station, just across from the Horton Plaza.
Cautiously, the crowd draws closer. Murmurs are heard among the multitude. What is this thing and what is it doing here?
And lastly, out at the San Diego PRIMUS base, part of the US Naval Air Station North Island out in Coronado, there is a knock on the door of the man commonly referred to as the Gargoyle.
Silver Avenger Gregory Rackham opens the door and peaks inside. "Up and at'm, gruesome! We've got a job to do! Unidentified aircraft has been spotted Downtown!"

GM Notes:
Welcome to the first post of Crucible new players and old friends! There's a lot going on here and much if it probably doesn't make much sense as of yet.
No mention was made of the individual players as it's up to each of you to place yourselves into the scenario. (Unless instructed otherwise via E-mail.)
Mystery Power Players:
Your character is in or around the Horton Plaza area. You do NOT have to be among the captives held by Affrighter and Devilspawn. You can be if you so desire. You could be a witness to what happened in the plaza or could be outside having seen the saucer land. Or you could be elsewhere in the expansive plaza and completely unaware that there is trouble afoot. You can be present by yourself, or with friends or family. You can even be driving in your car out on the street. The choice is yours!
Players in this category are: Brian & Krystyna Walsh, Lilly Pak, and Cyrus MacGregor.
Regularly Designed Characters:
You have the same options as the Mystery Power Players with the addition of not even being in the area and becoming aware of the situation by other means. You could have seen the saucer come in from a distance, intercepted the police bulletin about what was going on at the plaza, or just suspected that something bad was happening at the plaza. Maybe you were just at the plaza checking out the latest costumes at Superstarz, the costume boutique run by Lady Blue's company. Those hearing the radio bulletins will know that the Steel Squadron is also on their way.
Players in this category are: Gargoyle and Phaseflux.
Lastly are those players whose designed powers are triggered by the same event as the Mystery Power players. Nightstalker, use the same set up options as the Mystery Power Players have. The other characters in this category, Goldstar & Weapon X’s character, will appear in the 3rd post.
E-mail me if anyone has any questions.
Use this first post to introduce your characters and if you already have super powers what actions you are going to be taking. The event that causes those with Mystery Powers to get your powers is coming very soon! Are these two events somehow linked? Stay tuned!

Gargoyle
Silver Avenger Rackham peeks into Gargoyle's quarters only to have his ears assaulted by a horrible sound like a chainsaw grinding against the engine block of a truck. Gargoyle is sound asleep; his snoring is a god-awful noise that threatens to tear chunks of plaster from the ceiling.
Rackham shouts into the room, "Up and at'm, gruesome! We've got a job to do!"
Startled awake Gargy leaps into the air putting his head through the plaster ceiling, wedging it there for the briefest of moments before the plaster tears away and he comes plummeting back down. The Iron-reinforced bed specifically designed for him collapses under his massive weight as he drops back onto it, spilling Gargoyle onto the floor at the Silver Avenger's feet. He sits up shaking the sleep-haze from his mind and bellows:
"ALRIGHT, RACKHAM, I'M UP, I'M UP! GEEZE! WHATZ THE PROBLEM?!"
"An unidentified aircraft has been spotted downtown", Gregory continues as the hulking behemoth rises from the floor, smacking off the dust.
"YOU GOTTA BE KIDDIN ME! YOU WOKE ME UP CUZ YOU WANT ME TO GO LOOKIN FOR SOME PUDGY LITTLE GUY WITH A BAG OF REESE'S PIECES AND A LONG GLOWING FINGER!?! IF THIS IS SOME WILD GOOSE CHASE RACKHAM YER GONNA BE PHONIN' HOME FROM INTENSIVE CARE!!"
After bearing whatever nasty response Rackham has for him, Gargy responds "I'M ON IT!", surges his strength to +10, and leaps straight through the ceiling widening the hole his head made earlier. Gargoyle will bound his way to the mall and will land near the first out-of place thing he sees, whether it be the flying saucer or group of obvious superhumans. (Keep strength surged to +10)
"ALRIGHT, WHATZ GOIN ON HERE!? AND IT BETTER BE GOOD, CUZ IF I GOT DRUG OUTTA BED FOR NUTHIN SOMEBODYZ IN FER A WORLD OF HURT!!"

Gargoyle is a hulking muscle bound behemoth standing over 7' tall with ashen gray skin and white hair. He's certainly not the most comely person you've ever seen; his Neanderthal like brow and the way his lip furrows when he talks give him the appearance of an inhuman savage brute. Gargy appears to be incapable of whispering, every word he wraps his muscle knotted vocal-chords around booms over most background noises.

Krystyna Walsh
For the first time in months Krystyna was relaxing. With the demands of her Talent Agency, her home life, and not to mention her new baby boy, Krys had little time for herself or her husband.
Fortunately for Krys they had recently purchased a spacious new home and had invited her Mother to come live with them. How wonderful it was to be able to have her so close and not have to worry if something should happen to her mother.
On this particular day, after the craziness of the holiday, Krystyna's Mother had volunteered to watch their son so Brian and she could spend the day together. When Brian suggested they go out to dinner Krystyna was ecstatic, "But what will I wear?" she exclaimed. After being pregnant one tends to have gone through many different clothing sizes and her maternity dresses just weren't going to cut it. Now that Krys was in shape again a whole new wardrobe was in order.
Right away Krystyna thought of the new Horton Plaza. She had heard from many of her employees and clients that it is the place to shop for the latest in fashion. She had even heard about the amusements the Plaza contained and thought about the possibility of going to see a movie with Brian.
When they arrived at the Plaza both Krys and Brian were taken aback by how magnificently designed and beautifully decorated it was inside. From the tropical plant life to the pathways and shops. Krys was full of excitement, it was almost too much for her to handle. The open air and the sun shining down made it an even more relaxing experience. She couldn't believe that she was free to enjoy one of life's simple pleasures again. Like a kid in a candy store Krys took pleasure in the simple things of life and nothing was simpler than, "Charge it."
After Krystyna had found the perfect dress and some other fashionable attire, Krys convinced Brian to head into one more shop for shoes to compliment her outfits. Before they even reached the shop exit people began screaming and running in terror. Brian and Krys rushed to the doorway to see what was going on.
In the center of the shops stood six hellish-looking characters. They were grabbing people and thrusting them to the floor while the female member of the group appeared to be casting some sort of spell upon them. Mall security and the police rushed in to take charge of the situation but to no avail. They were easily dealt with by the six villains.
Quickly Brian pushed Krys to the floor behind a clothing rack near the shop window. "Stay here!" he yelled and ran out the shop exit. Krys tried to grab hold of him and stop him but the shock of trying to comprehend what was happening had thrown her off guard. All she could do was sit and watch.

Her eyes are stormy blue in color and almost seem grey at times.

Brian Walsh
Brian was beginning to think the upheavals in his life were never going to quiet down; between the demands of his consultation contracts, the birth of a new baby, and the purchase of a new home, life has been hectic to say the least. It seemed strange to say such things about one's in-laws, but Brian was relieved that Krystyna's mother had come to live with them; she was truly a God-send. When "mom" announced that she was taking the baby for the evening to give the couple a night to themselves no one objected; a romantic dinner for two was just what the doctor ordered.
It's strange, Brian thought to himself as he wandered through Horton Plaza following his wife from store to store, how romance for Krystyna always seemed to start with spending money; it brought a smile to his lips as he chuckled to himself. No matter, he didn't mind it, watching the simple joy she took sorting through racks and trying on dresses made it all worth while. It amazed Brian how something so small could erase months of tension in mere minutes; he was looking forward to some much needed quality time.
But then things went terribly wrong. At the first signs of trouble Brian pulled Krystyna down behind a rack.
Telling her to, "Stay down, and wait here!", Brian sprints out of the store and proceeds to the nearest available cover. Pausing only to shoot a glance over his shoulder to be certain that Krystyna did in fact stay put, Brian will duck and sprint several yards and duck under cover again (essentially try to half move from covered position to covered position). In this manner Brian will try to get close enough to one of the downed officers that he can reach out and drag him behind whatever it is he's using as cover. Brian will check for vitals to see if the man is still alive. Fumbling with the hook on the officers Police Band Radio, he pulls the mouthpiece to his lips.
"Dispatch, we have men down at The Horton Plaza. There are six superhuman assailants, they have hostages and they don't look like they're gonna stick around much longer... requesting immediate Primus backup."
Ignoring the dispatcher's demands to know who I am or what I'm doing on that frequency I drop the radio and assess the officer's condition the best I can. If it doesn't look like he's going to be in any condition to use it within the next couple seconds, I'll borrow his gun and any ammunition I can quickly find. Peering out from behind cover, I'll try to see if there's an angle of attack where I could conceivably get at the hostages while only facing one of the supers... even one on one they've got me outclassed.
If I can come up with an angle of attack, I'll spring from cover to cover along that line until I'm close enough to sprint in (as stealthfully as possible of course). I'll hold my fire until the villain I'm going to have to contend with is about to spot me, then pop a shot off aiming for his/her right eye (If it doesn't take them out it should at least blind them with their own tears), of course I'm no marksman so there's no guarantee I'll even hit my target, so if I miss I'll continue to squeeze off shots as I approach. Provided I'm able to wing him/her and close the distance before the other villains are alert enough to gank me I'll crash into the group of hostages, pulling at shoulders and shoving them behind me with my left hand shouting "GO! GO! GO!" never lowering my fire-arm. Provided I make it this far I'll begin backing swiftly away myself, laying cover fire as I go and prepared to dive for cover as soon as the hostages are in the clear. (of course, I don't actually believe I'm going to make it this far but, hey, dare to dream, right?)
If I can't find an opening for attack I'll attempt to create one; I'll pop up squeeze off a shot at the closest villain (again, aiming for the eyes if possible). Assuming this draws their fire I sprint (in a direction AWAY FROM where I left Krystyna hiding) diving for cover in an attempt to lead at least some of them away. Of course I'll try the lose the creep/creeps and circle back for another crack at it.

It's not paranoia when they're really out to get you!
After a dull and boring Fourth of July, I decided to cheer myself by going to the mall and spend my hard earned money on odds and ends. For almost 2 hours I walked around aimlessly at Horton Plaza with only a David Gemmel book, "Legend", to show for my troubles.
"Ah well, might as well see if the sports store has any decent hockey sticks" he thought to himself with a smirk.
Checking several of the hockey sticks for balance, I decided on one ,grabbed a few pucks from the wall ,paid and made my way to the door.
The next few moments were far from what Cyrus expected on this gorgeous, sunny day. Out of the window of the store I saw several people running frantically for the exits. Wondering what was going on I opened the door cautiously and headed in the opposite direction.
Making his way towards the disturbance, I notice a large group of people at the center of the chaos. "What the hell?!? Did the freak show come to town or what?" I say softly to myself, noticing a gargoyle-looking creature standing several yards away from mutilated bodies.
By the sheer look of terror on some of the captives I decide to call the cops as well as move to relative safety. Moving slowly behind some potted plants I look for the nearest phone away from the disturbance. I move swiftly to it pick up the phone and Dial 9-1-1. Speaking loud and clear "Hello!!!, I'm calling from Horton Plaza, there are bodies of several people all around, conditions of the victims are unknown. Several hostages still alive. I got to go. It's not safe here", and let the phone drop.
I decide to take cover further away from the wierd-looking group doing my best to hide myself from view.

Dave was going to enjoy this. A day off, good weather and surplus cash. After the last few weeks of uncertainty, testing, and all around change things were starting to look up. Dave was going in search of casual clothes, good food and fresh entertainment. The only problem being...he didn't exactly know what he wanted in casual wear. Twenty years of army life did not prepare one for this. Food variety was another novelty and as for cash.....! So there was one place to go that covered all contingencies: the Horton Plaza. According to Sam anyway. Dave figured this was Sam's way of getting him out into his new home city faster and helping him adjust to civilian life, and out from underfoot in the lab for awhile.
Besides, I do need some real clothes, Dave thought. And a good movie wouldn't hurt either. Dave took a taxi, got out, paid, and began to look around. Several minutes later Dave had closed in on a likely store and was examining a rather loud shirt ( do I dare?) when the sound of gunfire drew his immediate attention. No one else seemed to notice right off or else they didn't recognize the sounds for what they were. Dave knew though. Quickly taking his selection to a changing room he made that strange mental effort that changed his molecular structure and clothing and reduced drastically in size. " It's probably nothing too serious" he says to himself, "but I better go find out...quietly."
Now as Phaseflux and miniturized he will move quickly towards the disturbance. Upon seeing the hostage/sacrifice situation will also become Desolid and move into the circle, (and I hope through the force wall) approach behind wicked blonde with bad fashion taste, expand to normal ( turn off Shrinking turn on Density Increase) and throttle (NND chokehold) same. Yell out in parade ground voice "STAND DOWN !" If I cannot pass the circle will expand to full size (Turn off Shrinking turn on Growth) and Strike the field hoping to startle any casting going on and/or break the field. Phasefluxs' height and weight varies....

Lily Pak
It had been a long, hellish week. With one staffer out sick and another on vacation, the rest of the attorneys at the DA's office had to double up. Lily had ended up with three trials in one week; she can't remember having to spend so much time in court. At least she got 2 convictions; the other got off on a technicality. Lily didn't doubt that he'd be back in the system soon enough.
And if all that wasn't bad enough, she'd gotten spaghetti sauce all over her favorite silk blouse! She'd felt really stupid that afternoon in front of a jury with that mess all over her.
Finally, the weekend. It couldn't have come fast enough, but it was finally here. Having slept in until almost 10 AM - something she almost never does - Lily had spent the morning alternately doing housework and playing with her daughter, Rose, and their cat, Mijong. Rose had a birthday party for one of her friends to attend that afternoon, so Lily figured she could do her shopping then.
Dropping Rose at the party, Lily heads down to Horton Plaza. Ever since the mall was opened, Lily has become a regular shopper there. Almost everything she needs can be found there, and she loves several of the wonderful boutiques. First stop is lunch, so she stops into the Tex-Mex Grill and fills up, being careful to avoid ruining any more clothes.
Once she's done, it's time for some serious shopping. Lily happily drifts from boutique to boutique, eyeing this and trying on that. By time she finishes with the fifth shop, she has several bags, including one containing a replacement for her ruined silk blouse.
Exiting the DKNY shop, Lily hears a strange noice and loud voices. Stepping around the corner, she finds that she has walked right into a living nightmare. Strange people and... creatures, the likes of which she's never seen outside of TV and the movies. Screams and cries resound from the walls as people are grabbed roughly and thrust into a strange, glowing energy field.
A barely-dressed woman speaks to a hideous monster, "Go on Leech. Go and make momma proud!" The creature turns and shambles towards Lily. Far too quickly for her to react, the blotchy purple monstrosity is upon her. A sucker-laced limb adheres to Lily's face, blocking her vision and preventing her from breathing. A ghastly draining feeling overcomes her, as the creature seems to suck the very life from her body. She sags limply as darkness steals over her mind. Her last thought is of Rose; who will take care of her little girl?
Her purse and bags drop to the ground, forgotten.

Lily is a somewhat-pudgy asian woman of middling height. Brown eyes peer out from a round face framed by straight, shoulder-length black hair. She appears to be in her thirties, and generally dresses conservatively, though with style. Her white floral sundress features pink roses and carnations. A silver chain is draped around her neck, from which dangles a silver cross. Matching earrings and bracelets adorn her ears and wrists.
