New Frontiers #75

Earlier at Fort Fletcher:

Chareos keeps himself busy after Lord Sharadin departs with Sir Validar and Sir Acerion. He examines the diorama for the lands to the north of the fortress. He gleens that the placement of the fortress was well thought out. The fort essentially sits at the end of a dead end canyon. There are no usable paths to climb over the mountains in this area as they were removed back when the fort was built. It is a great barrier to large bodies of individuals.

Later in the ballista bay, Chareos speaks with Sgt. Irwin of Pyris.
Charoes wrote:"Excuse me, Sgt. Irwin, I was just wondering if you could show me the basics of such a weapon? And if I could help in any way?"
“Of course, milord. We’re just finishing up here as it is. A ballista is essentially an oversized crossbow. The principles are the same, only everything is much larger. The ballista fires larger ammunition and thus has to be wound tighter and requires stronger metals and thicker bowlines. The ammunition of a ballista is usually a ‘bolt’ about the size and shape of a spear.”

“Ballistas themselves come in three classes: Light, Medium, and Heavy. Essentially this refers to the actual size of the ballista. A heavy ballista is much larger than a light ballista. In Pyris, we tend to favor the light ballista. While it doesn’t pack the punch of a heavy ballista, it is far more accurate, requires fewer men to operate and can be fired twice as often. They also take up less space, so more can be emplaced when compared to a heavy ballista.”

“The Pyrisian Light Ballista is one of our own invention. We take the basic light ballista and mount it on a platform that can swivel to cover a wider arc. The mount supports much of the weight and the weapon can be controlled smoothly with just one operator.”

Dwarven Mines:
Grondar wrote:Grondar goes out of his way to greet the priest of Moradin in particular. "Well met, son of the Soulforge! Your presence here is a boon to us all. I'm certain we can work together to see that the spiritual needs of our people here are met."
"Well met, Grondar Foehammer! I am Dougan Ironhammer, servant of Moradin Soul Forger, he who hammered our race from the rock and metal at the core of the world. This is a great task we set out upon, Grondar. To reclaim what was rightfully ours. To erase a shameful part of our history when these fine realms had to be abandoned to lesser creatures. Those charged with this great task shall need our insight and our guidance. Let us get to work then!"

Dougan is dressed in plate mail armor and his shiny warhammer rests in his belt. His shield bears the symbol of Moradin: a hammer ready to strike an anvil.

The lady dwarf that Farian was admiring calls herself Senoia Redrock. She has blonde hair that is done up into two pigtails, wears chainmail armor and carries a pair of warhammers with her.

Baluk Ironforge assumes the position as assistant to Aria. Knowing the force that he has gathered, he'll easily split up the group to perform the tasks at hand. Assisting Grondar in moving the coal to Fort Fletcher is Jennak Firehand, a young female dwarf, and Udall Granitecrusher, a grizzled older dwarf. When able, Jennak asks many questions about Berronar and her teachings.

Most of the dwarves are put to work at clearing the cave in. There Thenek Strongaxe leads the workers in a rousing song to help ease the task at hand.

A bit further along, Aria, Baluk, Dougan, Farian, and two more dwarves examine the chasm.

"Lady Aria, I was given copies of the maps to the Hammerfall Mines from the registry back in Rockhome," Baluk explains. "These should help us find our way much easier. However, I am not sure how up to date they are."

After pouring over the maps the following is concluded. The mine tunnel directly across the chasm does eventually lead to Hammerfall. The way is about fifteen miles long.

There is a central supply depot in this area, but it is at a lower elevation. Two ways to reach it are noted. The main tunnel continues onward past the chasm, where it comes to another drop off. Another pulley and bucket system is in place to bring the coal up to this level. The cavern down below should hold more coal and has numerous tunnels off of it. One of these tunnels is the way to Hammerfall, another leads to the supply depot. Yet another tunnel off this second coal reserve runs 150' below the main tunnel. If the chasm is deep enough, it might open up into this other tunnel.

Farian prepares to rappel down the chasm and is joined by another dwarf. He goes by the name of Salem Ironring and he has his own climbing gear. He seems like a good-natured dwarf. "Well, this promises to bring a little bit of excitement into an otherwise boring day! Let us hope that there are rewards to be had equal to the challenge and the danger!"

After securing their lines by driving spikes into the rock around them, the two dwarves go downwards. Behind them Aria and the others work to get a rope bridge across the chasm.

The map provided seems to be on the money so far. About 150' down the chasm does uncover a second tunnel. This new tunnel does seem to run parallel the main one above it.

The chasm goes down about another forty feet before closing up once more. No other exits are noted.

Lords Council:

Over in Corunglain, a Council of Lords is being held.
Sir Validar wrote:When the time comes, Validar will relate the situation at Fort Fletcher. "We have been successful so far. The advance guard of orcs who were there were promptly dealt with and we determined the source of the apparent haunting of the Fortress as well. We have managed to secure Fort Fletcher and repairs are in progress. Currently the location is serviceable and should continue to improve."
"Well done," the King will compliment and there is light applause from the other council members. "That portion of the Kingdom will be secured against further intrusions. Then we can work to remove those invaders already on our lands."
Sir Validar wrote:"The orc army itself has not been located, although Lord Sharadin has indicated he will ask Silvarn to scout the areas both on the Broken Land side and our own just to be certain. The weather has been quite foul and this leads to another potential danger. We have speculated that perhaps the Cold Maiden, Auril, has attempted to marshal her forces in this area. It makes sense, since this is a land in turmoil from many sources lately. If such is the case, Fort Fletcher will be facing several enemies. We have informed Lord Sharadin, but I would humbly request some assistance from the sect of Lathander to help oppose this new enemy."
This brings a murmur of concern from the council.

"It is a concern if this is true. It seems for every enemy we dispatch, two more takes their place. If the Cold Maiden does have her eyes upon our lands, then we shall have to teach her the error of her ways. Perhaps Silvarn can find their stronghold while scouting, assuming she agrees to our request."

Silvarn will politely nod her head at this statement.

"We will provide you with all the assistance that we can, Sir Validar. If the followers of Lathander are opposed to the Cold Maiden, then we will acquire their services."
Sir Validar wrote:"We have begun exploration of the tunnels to Hammerfall. Apparently, the initial scouting indicates that a chasm has formed in the tunnels and a bridge will be needed to be built to connect the tunnels again. We also request the necessary tools and equipment and supplies to complete this endeavor. We have concluded that especially with the terrible weather in our area, that the underground route will be the most effective way to enter Hammerfall once more and reclaim its halls."
"I am sure that our dwarven allies can handle this situation. Let them deal with the challenges faced to reach Hammerfall. Continue to assist them as needed, but right now our challenges are much greater. The supplies request will be passed on to our contacts in Rockhome. Knowing how particular the dwarves are to the goods they use, I am sure that they'll want supplies of their own manufacture."
Sir Validar wrote:"As for the haunting of Fort Fletcher, I will let Sir Acerion speak on the details, but suffice it to say that we have not only cleared the Fortress of its 'ghosts', but have also reclaimed the Shield of Justice." Validar will move to the side of Sir Acerion and gesture to indicate his armor. "Sir Acerion is the current guardian of this artifact and with it we now have 50% of the Guardian Shield in our control."
A loud applause will break out from this announcement.
Sir Acerion wrote:"The haunting of the fort turned out to be something entirely different," Acerion begins. "It would seem the last of those stalwart defenders to fall while defending the fort did not move on. Since they knew they guarded the valuable Shield of Justice, it is my belief they held such conviction to that duty that they refused to move on, giving up eternal peace for a time to ensure the Shield's safekeeping."
"I am sure that such an honorable sacrifice will be well rewarded in the afterlife," Crysania notes. "May those souls find the peace that they have long deserved."
Sir Acerion wrote:"Upon our arrival and investigation, there were a number of clues we uncovered," Acerion continues. "However, the puzzle's solution remained elusive. Eventually I asked for, and was granted, a vision by Heironeous himself, which allowed me to see the hidden solution."

"Once we could reach the Shield, I approached and attempted its weight, of which for myself was negligible," Acerion reveals. "Within a brief moment it vanished, merging itself with this very armor I now wear. I know it can be retrieved when the time to complete the artifact is at hand."
"Well done, Sir Acerion," Dame Sharl will call out. To the rest of the council she adds, "This only goes to underscore that the Gods themselves are with us in our noble endeavors! Our tasks are great, but with faith, courage, and strength of arms only we shall leave the battlefield unscathed! A new era of greatness is dawning on our lands. The shackles of fear and doubt have been thrown off. It is time for us to stand on our own!"

The discussion turns to the mission to rescue the Duke of Corunglain from the clutches of the Hextorite Main Temple in New Keln. Dame Sharl, Sir Alon, and Crysania volunteer for the mission right away. Sir Validar and Sir Acerion also join in after more discussion.
Sir Validar wrote:"Is this attack to be limited to the Lords present who consent to this attack or can we expect to have additional forces at our side? Certainly, we will need one mage at a minimum to Teleport the Stone Cube there and at least one more as a back-up would be highly recommended."
"I speak for my whole band, Sir Validar," Crysania states. "We will all gladly participate in this mission. The threat of the God of War and Chaos must be dealt with! There is no other recourse in this matter."

Among the rest of the Council, Lord Sharadin, Lady Sallavarian, Lord Antonic, Lady Penhaligon, and Lord Vorloi also volunteer for the mission.

"If there are others who wish to partake in this mission, then they may come along as well," the King proclaims. "If there are those who wish to fight for the future of Cynalon, then I will not tell them that they cannot. Our lands were founded by brave men and women who were willing to lay down their lives for what they believed in. It is our tradition and one I will not change."

"However, time is fleeting. Spend today gathering those others who would wish to go along. We'll meet tomorrow at Karn's Keep to plan our assault. Our attack will be launched from Karn's Keep."

"I hold no illusions that the Hextorite threat will be forever defeated after this battle. No, others will come, but if we bring this temple down it will take them years to rebuild what they've lost. In that time we will only grow stronger."

The next topic is the discussion on the fate of Duchy of Elcadan. It was been revealed that the demonic Deville family killed the real Duke and his family decades ago. They have been controlling things from behind the scenes and using charmed men to act as the official rulers when needed. New rulers are required.

Lady Allonica suggests that those who border Elcadan, with the exception of Corunglain which has its own issues right now, split the land up. The suggestion brings a murmur of conversation from the council.
Sir Validar wrote:Sir Validar will stand alongside her and speak. "I agree with her assessment of the situation. While it would be in my family's best interests to try and lobby for the entire lands of the Duchy, I would agree that splitting the lands up will help to eliminate the remnants of what was Elcadan."

"We must create a new territory and a new identity for the people who have suffered under their foul rule. The Kingdom is undergoing a rebirth and these lands are in need of the same rebirth."

"We will need assistance however, to do battle with the enemy. I am certain that the demons will not simply go away without a fight. While I am confident that we can destroy these foul monstrosities, there is the danger of war and civil war breaking out. Clearly they know they have been found out and we will need to move quickly on the matter."

"My only concern is whether the newly reclaimed Barony of Restenford will be able to bring to bear enough control over that area and offer enough troops to secure Elstrich initially."
"I will assist you in this endeavor," Dame Sharl proclaims. "I will not tolerate demons walking feely within our borders."

"As shall I," Sir Alon declares.

"You would have our assistance if you wish it," Crysania offers. "We spent much time in Elcadan over the years. To think that such a thing went unnoticed and unchecked is disheartening. A chance to help restore order and goodness there would be most welcomed."

Lord Radu will rise next. "My fellow councilmen, what has been proposed does make sense to some degree. I am sure that we all will agree that Baron Relon is a wise ruler and most worthy of being elevated to the position of Duke and given control of Elcadan. It will take a strong ruler to clean out the rats' nest that Elcadan has become. It is not a task I would wish on anyone."

"I would question however that even with their combined resources, would Athenos, Pyris, and Restenford begin to maintain order in these lands? That task seems too great to me. What I propose is that select nobles from the Inner Kingdoms be assigned posts in this new realm we speak of. Lords who already have their own troops to bolster what is already there."

"There is wisdom to Lord Radu's words," Lord Vandevic will add. "Those of us in the Inner Kingdom have little chance to expand our territories as we are surrounded by mountains. There are many of us who wish to serve the kingdom and rule wisely, but simply cannot. Our families are large and opportunities few. What opportunities would there be for us in this realigning of the outer realms?"

"As Sir Validar so eloquently stated, this is a time for rebirth," Lord Vorloi speaks. "We cannot let those lands around Elcadan bear this burden alone. If we are to be a united kingdom, then all of us should have a hand in this matter. The security and stability of the kingdom is far more important than individual power. If there is stability, then we shall all prosper."

"The idea of gaining or founding our own realms is an appealing one," Lady Teris admits. "The building of something of value up from nothing, as our forefathers did, is a formidable challenge. I for one do not walk away from a challenge."

"There should be plenty of opportunities for all who wish them," the King states. "Not only is there the Elcadan territories, but the Stone Ridge area that we seek to reclaim, and the wilds of the Keln lands. You'll not find opportunity lacking under my leadership."

The general consensus is that Restenford is too small to fully control the area up to Elstrich and the ruins of Akorros. Instead, granting them more of the land around Restenford seems more prudent. Instead, having Elstrich fall under Athenos control is more popular. Athenos, at least on paper, has domain over the great swamp, so moving north is only logical and it has the navy to better patrol the waterways. The debate continues.

It is agreed that Baron Relon will take control of Elcadan. After finishing up with this meeting, the King plans to go to Pyris to inform the Baron.

Fort Fletcher:

While the Lords debate, the enemy force has arrived at Fort Fletcher! Instead of regular orcs, these ones are ice blue in color and are climbing over themselves to reach the parapets!

Turning to the elf commander, Sir Corley will say. "Let's bring these living ladders back down to the ground. Have your archers target the 'rungs' of these ladders. But allow one to nearly reach the parapets."

The elf commander passes the orders along and the archers begin to open fire. Sherra joins them after retrieving her bow. With practiced precision, the archers shoot out the rungs on the living ladders. The ice blue orcs fall as the arrows penetrate them, taking all those above down as well. Strangely enough, there are no screams as they fall.

"You're pretty good with the bow," one of the elves around Sherra compliments.

When Ivy arrives, Sir Corley has her try to determine if the invaders are undead. To no one's surprise, they are indeed undead. Ivy shouts this information and then invokes the power of her Goddess to turn the undead. Those undead within Ivy's range are blasted out of existence from her display of power. The ladder they had formed has been severely shortened.

At Sir Corley's direction, those priests who can turn undead move to the ballista platforms. Once the zombies are in range who have escaped being hit with arrows thus far, they are either destroyed or driven off.

The Continual Light rocks are thrown out and it helps with visibility down at the base of the fortress. Down on the third level of the fortress, barreled oil is manually poured out in the troughs where flaming oil used to run. The oil slowly runs down the grooves and out onto the outside wall of the fortress. Once most of it has run out, it is ignited.

The view is spectacular to those who can see. About halfway up, the side of the fortress simply erupts into flames for much of its length. The fire quickly engulfs those zombies on the ladders and they burn. One by one they fall off, taking the flames down to their brethren below. Within ten minutes, the wall is cleared and the archers and priests hold as no clear targets are in sight. The fires down below continue to burn brightly.

While this is going on, Lyonessa has arrived and begins to sing a stirring song to help boost moral.

No signs of a further attack have yet to be seen.

GM Notes

GM Notes:

Another very large post!

There is a great many things going on and many new directions are being opened up. This is a great opportunity to add new characters either from the existing players or even brand new ones. (I'm sure we've got lurkers out there who'd like to join in!) Just contact me for details and with any questions you might have.

The rules for Turning Undead are horrifically vague. The gist of what they say is that a Priest can Turn Undead an unlimited number of times per day, but that they can only make the attempt once per encounter. There is no mention of how close you have to be Turn Undead. So here's my house rules:

The range at which you can Turn Undead is 5 yards/level of the priest. That's how far the priest's power will reach. It is possible that the area you try to Turn will have more undead in it than the power can affect and that some of the undead simply will not be affected. In both cases, those undead who are unaffected by the Turn cannot be Turned again by the same priest in the same battle. So turning is a 1 shot deal during 1 particular battle.

Now what?

Lyonessa:

“Ah that,” as he soon remembers his comments. “It’s nothing, Lyonessa. It’s just that women confuse me so. They speak of looks as though it is the only thing that matters,” he chuckles. “Though, they find themselves wondering what happened when the immediate attraction dwindles and their sight has failed them.”

“I guess I do not understand how a women like Argent, who is intelligent and beautiful can be so… so shallow that they cannot see it is not the only thing that men have to offer. In many ways I wonder why she isn’t more like you.” Shaking his head in disbelief as he saying this to her. “You are also beautiful, intelligent and skilled in song, but you look beyond that of your peers and see the whole person. Not just an empty shell that fades over time.”

Lyonessa blushes at Chareos' compliment, but it is clear he is smitten by Argent. She does not know the whole picture, but she feels she must say something, "Thank you for the generous compliment Chareos," she says. "I would imagine though that we all enjoy looking at a pleasing body. I am sure if all had their wish, we would all be beautiful on the outside. I do my best to look past the physical, both good and bad, to try to see the person beneath. There is a real beauty there in all of us."

"I do not know about Argent," Lyonessa continues, "but I know some women, as are some men, who are shallow in such regards. I also know that there are some who are scared or shy, covering up for it by seeming superficial. I do not know that either apply to her however," she says the last with a shrug, then adds, "Does she know how you feel about her?"

By the time Lyonessa begins singing, the initial attack is seemingly over. She knows that it all could change very quickly and so continues to sing. Building upon the success they just had, she hopes the troops will be near invulnerable to whatever attempts to work against them occur next.

Lords Council...

Sir Validar -

When the time comes, Validar will relate the situation at Fort Fletcher.

"It is a step to securing the area more strongly. There is much work yet to be done, many enemies still in control of lands within our borders and many defenses yet to be reclaimed and strengthened."

"We have informed Lord Sharadin, but I would humbly request some assistance from the sect of Lathander to help oppose this new enemy."

This brings a murmur of concern from the council.

"It is a concern if this is true. It seems for every enemy we dispatch, two more takes their place. If the Cold Maiden does have her eyes upon our lands, then we shall have to teach her the error of her ways. Perhaps Silvarn can find their stronghold while scouting, assuming she agrees to our request." Silvarn will politely nod her head at this statement.

"We will provide you with all the assistance that we can, Sir Validar. If the followers of Lathander are opposed to the Cold Maiden, then we will acquire their services."

"That would be a definite boon to our efforts in the area. Lack of information has been the biggest concern we have at the moment. I am confident that we can defend Fort Fletcher from any enemy who tries to take it."

"We have begun exploration of the tunnels to Hammerfall.

"I would not be surprised at that decision, my King. The dwarves are often quite particular in their customs. We do not have a direct line of communication to Rockhome from Fort Fletcher however, so we are forced to express such needs in this manner currently. Anything that they can supply will only help resettle this area and speed up our attack against Ardelphia and the liberation of Stone Ridge."
-----------------------------------------------------------

"Well done, Sir Acerion," Dame Sharl will call out. To the rest of the council she adds, "This only goes to underscore that the Gods themselves are with us in our noble endeavors! Our tasks are great, but with faith, courage, and strength of arms only we shall leave the battlefield unscathed! A new era of greatness is dawning on our lands. The shackles of fear and doubt have been thrown off. It is time for us to stand on our own!"

Validar is ambivalent about whether the gods are behind the rebirth of Cynalon or not. He has always tried to avoid the machinations of these beings or at most, use them to his advantage as necessary. "We shall surely be successful, Dame Sharl. Of that I am certain."
------------------------------------------------------

Eventually the discussion turns to the rescue mission of the Duke of Corunglain and the attack on New Keln.

Others of the Lords volunteer for the mission, and Crysania makes it clear that her entire band will be along for the battle. Validar is certainly not thrilled with the idea of working together with Drakkimor and his band. They have not had the most harmonious of encounters as yet. "Who is to be in charge of this mission then?"

"My group, the Guardians of Light, would surely risk their lives to fulfill this mission. However, with the danger that remains at Fort Fletcher, they are needed there as well. As one of the past leaders of the Seekers, I am certain that if any of them are available, then they would certainly join our attack on New Keln. The Seekers did pledge themselves to the stopping of this sacrifice already."

"The Hextorite slugs are strongly entrenched. That they were involved in the attack on Corunglain here is enough to prove that, despite the severe losses they felt in the Frontier. They need to be dealt with in a more permananet manner."
----------------------------------------------------------

The next topic is the discussion on the fate of Duchy of Elcadan. Lady Allonica suggests that those who border Elcadan, with the exception of Corunglain which has its own issues right now, split the land up. The suggestion brings a murmur of conversation from the council.

"I will assist you in this endeavor," Dame Sharl proclaims. "I will not tolerate demons walking feely within our borders."

"As shall I," Sir Alon declares.

"The assistance of both of you will be well-received, most certainly. You will honor us with your participation in these efforts."

"You would have our assistance if you wish it," Crysania offers. "We spent much time in Elcadan over the years. To think that such a thing went unnoticed and unchecked is disheartening. A chance to help restore order and goodness there would be most welcomed."

"I am certain that there are many tasks which will be required in the coming months in regards to freeing and reclaiming all of Elcadan," Validar responds. He is not 100% certain that he wants to deal with Crysania and her group after their last encounter, but he is not dismissing it out of hand at this point either. They are powerful and they have many connections.

Some of the other lords on the council speak about the opportunities and their desires to claim parts of Elcadan for their own. Validar bristles initially at these comments, as their lands so strongly denied any help whatsoever to Corunglain or Stone Ridge when it was needed, but now want part of the outer lands now that they are more secured. However, the King has picked these people to help secure and strengthen the Kingdom. Until he knows more about them, he must be ready to not give in too easily. Perhaps, like Lady Teris, the rest of them will be looking for true opportunities. If not, he will fight them to the end. He steels himself for the political battles to begin here, prepared to succeed in this area as well as on the field of combat.

"There should be plenty of opportunities for all who wish them," the King states. "Not only is there the Elcadan territories, but the Stone Ridge area that we seek to reclaim, and the wilds of the Keln lands. You'll not find opportunity lacking under my leadership."

Validar will stand again to take the floor after the King has finished speaking. "Thank you for the confirmation of Baron Relon as the best person to take control of Elcadan. I can assure you that there is a strong enough infrastructure to deal with the issues that will arise. Pyris has already made efforts in conjunction with the House of Azrella to alleviate some of the suffering in Elcadan City and some of the towns bordering our lands. Twin Forks has already been cleansed of bandit activity and new businesses are being established there. Further, Lord Sherwood has many adventuring bands out to combat the bandits throughout Elcadan's borders. There are many plans which can be initiated to bring about a swift change to the city and the surrounding areas."

"Lord Radu, your concern may be a valid one to bring up, but it is without question within our abilities to resolve. We may be much smaller than Elcadan, but it is not a stable area. The Duke rules through fear and intimidation. The people will rise up and oppose the existing rulers once they are given enough hope that change can be made."

"It is however imperative, King Victor, that the effort to resettle and control Elcadan be completed with a concerted and organized effort. With numerous hands involved in the process, it will only be disorganized, disjointed, unfocused and entirely ineffective. I propose that Baron Relon work together with the Duke of Athenos. The lands will need to be reassigned and on the assumption that indeed the King would deem the him worthy and designate Baron Relon as the Duke of the area, then a minimum of two baronies would be established within his territory."

"There is the opportunity for a deserving unlanded lord to prove himself in a challenging situation, as Lady Teris suggested. Further, as the Duke of Athenos has lost one of his baronies on the far side of the Dire Swamp, he is surely incented to establish a barony of the lands he gains as well. There are plenty of opportunities for those who are worthy, but it must be a strong concerted effort and these new Barons must swear fealty to their new Lords, rather than be tied to other lands and other concerns. There will be no stability and only more danger from a fragmented and disorganized effort in this matter."

"It is easy to see an opportunity at another's expense. For those of you willing to join us in our quest to secure the Western Outer Lands of the Kingdom, we welcome you with open arms. However, it has often been the case that the concerns of the Outer Lands are not shared by those in power in the Inner Lands."

"The Duke of Corunglain has been nearly on his own against the tide of enemies which have rolled through his lands. We are a convenient buffer to the Inner Lands, but obviously one which has not required any attention nor effort to assist. Where were the troops sent to defend Corunglain or its territories and fortresses that protect the Kingdom from invading humanoids? Who gave assistance to the Lady Vera Ardel in order to try and free Ardelphia and the rest of her lands from these barbarian raiders and plunderers?" Validar will pause to let these words sink in to those present.

"Lord Corley, son of General Logan, has vowed to see Stone Ridge liberated. As has my companion, Sir Acerion. His grandmother has lobbied for assistance to assault Stone Ridge and reclaim Ardelphia for many long years and has yet to receive anything other than derision at worst and unconcern at best. We have dedicated ourselves to this task and will see it through to completion."

"At the risk of sounding arrogant in spouting the truth, I will dare to say that it is the Guardians of Light who have restored Rennydale and broken the hold of evil over it, with our allies and companions. We defeated the army assaulting Corunglain and with Lord Sharadin and Silvarn's help defeated the dragon, Ember, which led those horrible, invading forces. With the assistance of other adventuring bands and our own forces, we surely have enough conviction and ability to reclaim not only Stone Ridge and Elcadan, but all of the other fallen lands in Western Cynalon."

"Anyone who wishes to join the efforts to truly better our lands will be welcomed with open arms. Elcadan and her people deserve the best that we can offer to her. The individual concerns of each lord in the kingdom is secondary to the overall health of the Kingdom, and all of her citizens. Therefore a strong presence from those who are aware of the concerns and situations that have already been faced is needed, not a haphazard, unorganized effort, requiring far too much politics and far too many meetings to effectively help the people who live in these lands."

Validar will pause for a moment to let those words settle about the room. He is a bit forceful in his viewpoint, but this is not a time to be stonewalled or taken advantage of by any of the Inner Land lords as so often happened under the previous King's rule. On this matter, and out-numbered as he is, he will have to remain unwavering.

"If I may propose a suggestion on how to divide these lands? As Restenford is recently recovered and also in need of continually defending her own borders, the Barony could receive more land and work to better securing the trade routes that pass through there."

"The Duchy of Athenos would receive all of the lands south of the Gray Hair River, the lands west of the Streel River up to the closest fork to Elcadan, and across the plain to include Elstritch. They would gain additional water trade route control as well as a rich area in Elstritch. This land would certainly be a desirable Barony in its own right."

"The lands remaining could be broken into perhaps two new Baronies, as Baron Relon would deem suitable, one of which would include Ansimont and perhaps Wrassledown and the other to be Elcadan city and the surrounding territory. It would be smaller than current, but plenty desirable and valuable to a new Baron and more easy to control by focusing on the matters of the city and the renewal of the hell-hole that it currently is." Validar pauses for a moment as he points out the territories in question.

"Restenford is strengthened by not having to defend her borders against bandit activity as will Pyris and Athenos. We have struggled for years against this internal enemy and it is only right that we gain the fruits of that struggle. Athenos will be made more strong and increase their trade to northern areas. With the Trade Guilds of Elcadan under proper control, Athenos and every other land in the Kingdom will have greater opportunity to a fair market for their goods. Athenos will gain prime territory and wealth. Her navy will be vital in controlling the waterways around Elcadan. Further her Duchy will be a proper one again with an additonal Barony under the Duke's control."

"Pyris has been a strong foe to the enemy that Elcadan has fielded. We have secured our borders and grown despite every attempt by the much larger Elcadan to weaken or destroy us. The battle will be fought by our soldiers and our commanders throughout the area. But Pyris will be up to the task. I have been preparing for war against Elcadan as long as I was able to lift a sword. My record of conquests speaks for itself. I will make certain that Baron Relon will be successful in this matter and with the offered help of such esteemed warriors such as the Dame Sharl and Sir Alon, we are assured of victory." Validar will look to his King for his assessment of the suggestion.

It is agreed that Baron Relon will take control of Elcadan. After finishing up with this meeting, the King plans to go to Pyris to inform the Baron.

"I admit that I am without means to rapidly transport, having to rely on others. That said, if it were at all possible, I would like to accompany the King to Pyris to be present at the news to my father, if at all possible. Further, I would like to then travel to Gateway or have someone go in my stead to see if the Seekers are available for this mission in New Keln. I will need assistance in this however."

This is a great task we set out upon, Grondar. To reclaim what was rightfully ours. To erase a shameful part of our history when these fine realms had to be abandoned to lesser creatures. Those charged with this great task shall need our insight and our guidance. Let us get to work then!"
"Together, Dougan Ironhammer, I have no doubt that we will accomplish all that is needful."
Aria wrote:“Or I could just throw you across,” Aria retorts with a wide grin. “Explore the chasm first and we’ll take care of crossing the gorge.”
Aria's suggestion brings a chuckle from Grondar. "Aye, perhaps if I take an arm and you take an arm, we might teach our friend Farian to fly! That would be quite a first for dwarvendom."

Grondar is quite pleased to make the acquaintance of Jennak and Udall. As they work, he chats with them in a supportive, encouraging manner. Any questions regarding Berronar or other godly matters will be happily answered at whatever length they appear willing to listen to.

As directed by Sir Corley, Grondar will move to one of the ballista platforms and join the efforts to destroy or turn away these ghastly undead servants of Auril. Though his power isn't as strong as Aria's, Grondar will contribute what he can to the effort.

As the attack seems to falter, Grondar hears Lyonessa's voice rising over the cacophany of the battle. Turning, he smiles at the woman with the beautiful voice. "Thank you," he says simply, not wanting to disturb the song further.

Regarding Turning, am I correct in assuming that as new targets come into the area of effect, they can they be affected by the power? Also, if a target is unaffected by the power of one priest, are they still subject to the power of another, or are they immune to Turing from any priest? For example, if Grondar failed to Turn a particular creature, might Ivy's power still work on that creature?

You are correct. Basically each priest has 1 chance to turn an undead. A second attempt will never succeed and this applies only to the priest in question. A second priest has his normal chances to turn an undead, as would a 3rd or 4th as the case may be.
Try it and find out!

Yusef:

Sir Corley is busy directing the battle and Yusef is uncertain whether the big warrior heard him. Nevertheless, the battle ends soon, so perhaps it matters not.

The call goes out for priests to help in Turning these orcish undead. Not possessing that ability, there is still little for the monk to do, so he remains seated against the wall out of the way. In truth, the inactivity and inability to contribute rankle, but one would not know it from looking at Yusef's placid exterior.

At least he is in a good position to listen to Lyonessa's singing, which is very pleasant to hear. It reminds him a little of the singing that was so much a part of everything they did at the monastery. However, did not share the melodic and stirring nature of Lyonessa's song, but rather was more contemplative and restrained.

Chareos
Chareos keeps himself busy after Lord Sharadin departs with Sir Validar and Sir Acerion. He examines the diorama for the lands to the north of the fortress. He gleans that the placement of the fortress was well thought out. The fort essentially sits at the end of a dead end canyon. There are no usable paths to climb over the mountains in this area as they were removed back when the fort was built. It is a great barrier to large bodies of individuals.
As Chareos looks at the diorama, he can’t help but marvel at the fort in a different light. Sitting at the end of a dead end it essentially cuts off any route a large body can take. Noting whomever planned the building of it even had the sense of mind to seal any route within the area, driving them to this point. In his estimation, the fort should be easy enough to hold, as it offers a decent killing ground. The only adversary that could weaken it is time or an extremely large force.

“Ballista’s themselves come in three classes: Light, Medium, and Heavy.

Chareos listens intently as the Sgt. speaks of the different types of Ballista siege engines. “These “bolts” can they be outfitted much like a catapult? Say with burning pitch? Perhaps a breakable jar encasing oil and lit before released?” he asks curiously as surely a weapon would also cause chaos within an advancing column's ranks. Afterward he will thank the Sgt for his time.

At Sir Corley’s direction Chareos stands off to the side ready for the call for the mages to step forward or the orcs to step on the fort's walls. Neither comes to pass as the clerics seemingly turn the monsters away as Sir Corley instructs the oil barrage to be lit and the air erupts into a bright glow! Unfortunately the wind is also present and the smell of burning flesh reaches his senses.
“I don’t believe so, I haven’t spoken to her of it.” Pausing a few moments he wonders if it was merely puppy ‘love’, soon to fade. “Nor do I know if I shall. Perhaps I should give her a chance before I’m so quick to judge.”

He waits on the fort’s walls within earshot of Sir Corley. If he is to learn tactics of battle it would prove the best place to do so. And await what will come though he wonders out loud.

“How large was this force that comes against us?” he asks Sir Corley, hoping they do not have to face another icicle dragon again so soon. The he goes on, “If visibility is a problem perhaps a Wall of Fire would lighten the area as well. Not only would it damage those walking toward it but would give our archers more visibility!!”

A sudden thought comes to mind remembering their battle with the dragon, and the studying of the Diorama, only one other way as he looks to the skies….

“With our previous battle with the Cold Maiden she used that Icicle dragon; What to say she wouldn’t use similar constructs against us, ones that could take to the air much like the dragon tried.”

Farian
The lady dwarf that Farian was admiring calls herself Senoia Redrock. She has blonde hair that is done up into two pigtails, wears chainmail armor and carries a pair of warhammers with her.
“Ah” he adds fondly eyeing the female dwarf! “A women after me own heart,” as he notices the two warhammers hanging from her hips. Fixing his coal ridden hair and beard, “How I look?” he asks Grondar as he sniffs his shirt making himself go cross-eyed for a second.

He approaches Senoia and introduces himself, “Farian Silverpike at your service, milady. I was wonderin' if ye be interested in having a cup o’ ale with me?” If she says yes, Farian will give Grondar a wink.
“Aye it is. You just be remembering we are to be searching not a fighting. There will be plenty of time for that soon enough, me thinks!” giving the dwarf a slap on the shoulder with a smile.
The map provided seems to be on the money so far. About 150' down the chasm does uncover a second tunnel. This new tunnel does seem to run parallel the main one above it.
The chasm goes down about another forty feet before closing up once more. No other exits are noted.
Almost near the bottom Farian and Salem seem to have found another tunnel off the chasm wall. Perhaps it wasn’t such a bad thing the cave in happened after all. Moving closer to the tunnel but not going in he takes a look to see if this tunnel has supports or has been worked. He will set down and secure his rope. If no supports are seen/ unworked he will have Salem go report to Aria that they may have trouble, before setting down and checking the tunnel out.

With Salem at the lower tunnel, “If we gonna do this, we do it my way. Stay behind me; if I spot something, I'll do this.” balling up his fist, “then I'll come back to ya. Have your weapon ready if we need to run we will. We be here for information, not blood.”

Sir Corley:
Lady Ivy wrote:“Of course, Sir Corley. I would be happy to.”
“My thanks, Lady Ivy. At least we’ll gain some measure of what we are dealing with.”
Lady Argent wrote:“If these are undead we are dealing with, Sir Corley, then someone has to be giving them instructions. They might even be watching what transpires here at the fortress. Also if this is a siege, then at some point we spellcasters are going to have to rest. I think it would be better to allow at least one of us to cast their spells and rest, while the others stand ready. Have a fresh spellcaster available at all times. For one of us to rest without casting those spells that we can would be a waste of a resource.”
“You make a valid point, Lady Argent. We will need to send scouts out once more when conditions are more suitable. For now, I would rather save your spells for when we need them. Yes, it is true that you can rest and regain your magicks, but that would take time. We have to assume that our enemy has spotted you and Lord Chareos during one of your scouting expeditions. They have to conclude we have at least two mages entrenched here. Thus they can use sortie’s to try and make you and Lord Chareos expend your spells and then send a greater force once they know you are resting and studying. In this particular instance, I believe that it is more prudent to have the magicks available at all times.”
Lady Lyonessa wrote:Arriving a little later than most, Lyonessa listens close to what Sir Corley says. She remembers her dealings with the cold and foul creatures within not so long ago, and this seems too familiar. Lyonessa will begin singing, a stirring song to raise morale among those on the wall who will have to face the zombies first should spells and arrows fail to halt their icy advance.
Sir Corley hears Lady Lyonessa’s lovely voice before he spots the bardess. She’s doing her part to help strengthen the fortress defenders resolve. Sir Corley will nod approvingly when their eyes meet.
Grondar wrote:"Very well, Sir Corley. If I may, I'd like to take a moment to collect my crossbow; it won't take long, I promise." If Corley agrees, Grondar will race down to the second level, grab his crossbow and supply of quarrels, and race back.
“Very good.”
Grondar wrote:"That is quite some transformation. It certainly gives her a sizable army to wield in her attack on our fort. I wonder how much of the army she was able to take into her service? It would require immense power to transform it all - perhaps more than even she has access to."
“I cannot say for sure right now, noble dwarf. Even the power of a lesser goddess has to be immense compared to us mere mortals. We have to surmise that she could not ensnare all of the orc forces, but what part she did is unknown. At the very least we have a strong defensive position and the capacity to hold it for as long as necessary.”
Yusef wrote:At such time as Sir Corley seems to have a moment, Yusef will speak up. "Sir Corley? I thought you might want to know about these bottles I carry. Each is enchanted in such a way that, when broken, it will create a small fiery explosion. They can be thrown by anyone. As you are probably aware, it is possible that these servants of the Cold One will be especially susceptible to fire, so they may prove to be a valuable weapon."
“Thank you for this information, Yusef. Indeed, they may come in handy at some point during the battle. But for now we leave them in our arsenal until needed.”

After a moment’s pause, Sir Corley will ask, “Friend Yusef, I am unfamiliar with this magic, but would it be possible to place these bottles inside a barrel of oil and then throw the whole thing down below. If it works, such a thing would make a very nasty weapon.”

Lady Ivy identifies the threat as being undead. Commands are given and they are carried out efficiently. The archers bring down many of the orcs trying to climb up the side of the fortress, and the priests destroy many more. Oil is poured out and lighted, igniting the side of the fortress and destroying the rest. It is all seemingly over for the moment.

Sir Corley will tell Lieutenant Wyndham to keep the alert for another fifteen minutes. If no other hostiles show, then the extra men can go back to their normal duties. He’ll also pass his compliments to the Elf Commander on his groups archery skills.
Lady Lyonessa wrote:By the time Lyonessa begins singing, the initial attack is seemingly over. She knows that it all could change very quickly and so continues to sing. Building upon the success they just had, she hopes the troops will be near invulnerable to whatever attempts to work against them occur next.
After Lady Lyonessa concludes her song, Sir Corley will approach. “Lady Lyonessa, I wish of boon of you if you please. Right now we are in the dark as far as what we are facing. Would you consent to allowing Dusk to fly out and scout the area around the fortress? He need only see what is going on and can stay as far as way as need be. We suspect that unknown beings are controlling this force of undead. We need to find these persons and eliminate them with extreme prejudice. If we can find them, then we can deal with them.”
Lord Chareos wrote:“How large was this force that comes against us?” he asks Sir Corley, hoping they do not have to face another icicle dragon again so soon. The goes on, “If visibility is a problem perhaps a Wall of Fire would lighten the are as well. Not only would it damage those walking toward it but would give our archers more visibility!!”
“That remains unknown, Lord Chareos. Perhaps Lady Lyonessa’s familiar can help shed some light on this. I appreciate your suggestion, Lord Chareos, but now is not the time to summon your Wall of Fire.”
Lord Chareos wrote:A sudden thought comes to mind remembering their battle with the dragon, and the studying of the Diorama, Only one other way him as he looks to the skies….

“With our previous battle with the Cold maiden she used that Icicle dragon, what to say she wouldn’t use similar constructs against us, Ones that could take to the air much like the dragon tried.”
“It is possible and something that we’ll need to keep watch for.”

Sensing that more is needed to be said to the other Guardians, Sir Corley will try to explain the situation better. “I know that you are all eager to engage the enemy and I sympathize with that. But the kind of battle we are engaged in precludes that right now. A siege is unlike any battle you’ve fought in thus far. We know little about our enemy and most likely our enemy knows little about us.”

“What we are in could be called a ‘feeling out process’. The force we just turned back was not meant to overwhelm us. They were sent to test the strength of our defenses. It is a sound strategy designed to learn about us. To counter such measures, you employ only the minimum amount of your resources to stave off the threat. Therefore I kept any special attacks and magic spells to a bare minimum. The enemy does not know about your exploding bottles or what other magicks we have at our command.”

“It is true that they now know we have multiple priests here, but this works in our favor. If the main force of the enemy is composed of undead, then they know we can defeat them. I would suspect that any further undead attack would only be a diversion. Thus the situation remains that we know little about the strength and scope of the enemy, and we remain a mystery to them.”

“We can expect a series of attacks, each more powerful than the one before it. With each attack the measure of our response will be increased. Those things that we saved during this battle will be used later on. For now I suggest that you all get some rest. This promises to be a very long day.”

“Depending on what Dusk finds, we may launch an attack of our own. We’ll have to see what Lyonessa’s familiar discovers.”

"Like the disreputable tunnel-goat that you are, my friend," Grondar replies with a mischievous gleam in his eye. "Probably just her type..."

When he returns from fetching his crossbow, Grondar sees Yusef sitting against the wall. "How goes it, my young companion? It seems we may have quite a battle on our hands."
Corley wrote:“I cannot say for sure right now, noble dwarf. Even the power of a lesser goddess has to be immense compared to us mere mortals. "Have no doubt that we will stand beside as long as breath moves within us, Sir Corley. My greatest concern is that she may find a way to attack that we haven't anticipated."
Chareos wrote:“With our previous battle with the Cold Maiden she used that Icicle dragon; What to say she wouldn’t use similar constructs against us, ones that could take to the air much like the dragon tried.”
"Ahh, that is a worrisome idea you have there, Chareos. I pray it doesn't come to pass, as I'm not sure we could hold this keep against a flight of those."

After the battle is done, Sir Corley spends time reviewing the overall strategy for the battle with them. Much of it is familiar with Grondar, though clearly Corley is more versed in strategy and tactics than he is. He's glad to hear that Dusk may do some scouting for them, though he is concerned for the danger this places Lyonessa's familiar in. Surely the wise bardess will make the best choice in this situation.

Grondar will fetch some food and drink from the kitchens, then return to overseeing the transport of the coal to the furnaces. Due to the likelihood of battle returning, he will try to avoid wearing himself out. Fortunately, dwarves are very tough, and his magically-augmented strength makes the task easier than it would be otherwise.

"Well enough, Grondar," Yusef replies. "I just feel rather useless sitting here with no real way to contribute to our defense." He shrugs, knowing that there is little that he can do at the moment to change the situation.
Corley wrote:“Thank you for this information, Yusef. Indeed, they may come in handy at some point during the battle. But for now we leave them in our arsenal until needed.”

Yusef considers Sir Corley's proposal for a few moments. "I'm not sure, Sir Corley, though it would certainly be quite a weapon if it worked. However, I suspect the oil might actually soften the impact on the bottle to such a degree that it might not break on impact. It may be more effective to put the bottle on the outside of the barrel, perhaps even sandwiched between a couple of rocks to make it more likely to break."
Chareos wrote:The he goes on, “If visibility is a problem perhaps a Wall of Fire would lighten the area as well. Not only would it damage those walking toward it but would give our archers more visibility!!”
Hearing Chareos describe the spell usage, Yusef finds himself impressed. To think that this mage has access to such powerful magic tells him he has fallen in with a potent force. "That would seem a particularly effective strategy come nightfall, should the battle last that long."

After the battle has died away and people are able to relax again, Sir Corley addresses the group and talks about his strategy for the overall defense of the fort. After listening to what Corley has to say, Yusef feels somewhat better, though he certainly feels no need of rest right now. Instead, he will volunteer to spend some time on guard duty so that others more involved in the battle may rest.

Argent listens to Sir Corley’s reasoning on why his response to the attack was so restrained. His strategy is well thought out and seems to be not only taking into consideration what the enemy is trying to do, but also looking ahead to future encounters.

“Admittedly the magicks I wield are suited to being the aggressor, rather than just waiting until the right opportunity. Alas, you seem have the situation under control. I bow to your wisdom. Do let us know when we can help.”

Before stepping away, Argent adds, “I still have a single Flight spell, as does Chareos. I thought you should know that if a target we can reach comes up.”

Ivy soon determines that we are indeed facing undead.

“EWWWW!!!” Argent unexpectedly cries out and shivers as if freezing. “One of those things felt my leg a few days back!”

As Argent listens to Sir Corley mention asking Lyonessa have Dusk go forth and scout, an idea comes to her mind. She rushes up to Lyonessa. “I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before! I’m so sorry! But either Chareos or myself can place a Stoneskin on Dusk! That would help protect your familiar from undo injury!”

Argent does as suggested and takes it easy, since everyone seems to be on call if another attack comes.

Ivy:

When Ivy arrives, Sir Corley has her try to determine if the invaders are undead. To no one's surprise, they are indeed undead. Ivy shouts this information and then invokes the power of her Goddess to turn the undead. Those undead within Ivy's range are blasted out of existence from her display of power. The ladder they had formed has been severely shortened.

“UNDEAD!!” Ivy calls out at the top of her lungs. Grasping her Holy Symbol, Ivy invokes her goddess' given power to destroy such monstrosities.

Seemingly all too soon, the zombies go up in flames and are destroyed, but Ivy can’t be sure. “I should go down there and make sure there aren’t any more of them! My sensing range is limited. We’ve got to be sure those monstrosities have been destroyed!!”

I’m sure the others will work to talk her out of this action…

“Not quite the first,” Aria says with a laugh. “I’ve gone flying a few times thanks to a hill giant. Lumberin’ mutants of the earth, they be!”
Baluk wrote:"Lady Aria, I was given copies of the maps to the Hammerfall Mines from the registry back in Rockhome," Baluk explains. "These should help us find our way much easier. However, I am not sure how up to date they are."
Baluk brings up the maps he brought with him from Rockhome.

“Aye, this is good to have! It’ll save much wandering around.”

Seeing the maps laid out before her, Aria can figure out how to proceed next.

“Farian, you and Salem explore down the chasm first. If it is safe, take the tunnel to the supply depot and secure it. We’ll take the main tunnel to the next coal access and then meet you at the depot.”

“Baluk, have the debris from the collapse brought to the edge of the cliff. Once Farian and Salem have explored down there, we can start dumping it. We’ll try to bring back new support timbers to shore up this tunnel.”

Once lines are secured to cross the chasm, Aria and those who accompany her will move forward with the idea of meeting up with Farian in the supply depot.

More Turning Undead Questions

Would Ivy's sensing and Turning abilities work through stone? For example, could she stand in the tunnel on the ground floor behind the defensive blocks, and use her power from there on anything in range?

Stone of over 1' thickness and most metals block the various detections. The postive energy released from Turning would not penetrate stone that thick either. The outer wall of the fortress at ground level are 40' thick, except where the stones are used as a type of air-lock arrangment.

The mental image of Aria flying through the air brings a rumbling chuckle from Grondar. "I stand correctly, my lady. Clearly, you hold that honored and prestigious title."
Yusef wrote:"Well enough, Grondar," Yusef replies. "I just feel rather useless sitting here with no real way to contribute to our defense." He shrugs, knowing that there is little that he can do at the moment to change the situation.
Grondar claps the seated halfbreed on the shoulder. "Understandable, my friend, but don't worry, I'm sure we'll all get plenty of opportunity to put our lives on the line long before this enemy is defeated."

"Uhm... Hold up a moment there, Ivy. I know you're eager to destroy more of these undead abominations, but we really don't know what else is out there. We cannot afford to open the gates to let you out as it would allow them a way in. Besides, leaving the safety of these walls would just allow them to overwhelm us and cut us down one at a time. Have no fear that Sir Corley will let us know when it is the right time to strike out offensively."

So much for that idea. I seem to recall that each of the blocks in the tunnel were at least a foot thick, and there would be two in the northern tunnel.

not very impressive... yet

Sherra:
The elf commander passes the orders along and the archers begin to open fire. Sherra joins them after retrieving her bow. With practiced precision, the archers shoot out the rungs on the living ladders. The ice blue orcs fall as the arrows penetrate them, taking all those above down as well. Strangely enough, there are no screams as they fall.

"You're pretty good with the bow," one of the elves around Sherra compliments.
Sherra can't help but feel this is way too easy. Even shooting enemy pirates and raiders of off rigging was a little more difficult than this. It is obvious they are nothing more than puppets, minor undead, even before Ivy identifies and destroys them.

Sherra smiles at the complement, " Thank you. That means a lot coming from such a skilled individual as yourself."

Nothing more threatens at the moment, but Sherra remains alert. Sir Corley addresses us and is going to enlist the aid of Lyonessa's familiar to scout the area. It seems as though there will be some down time as everyone waits for the next wave.

Sherra will make her way to Sir Corley, "I know you have no desire for us to split up," she tells him. "Still, I wish you to know that if you need someone to scout the area further, depending on what Dusk finds, I volunteer. With my armor, I can be almost undetectable and I can use my boots to ascend and descend the walls without us having to compromise the security of the fort."

"Just another option for our commander to keep in mind," Sherra tells her friend with a smile.

Acerion

Acerion:

"Well done, Sir Acerion," Dame Sharl will call out. To the rest of the council she adds, "This only goes to underscore that the Gods themselves are with us in our noble endeavors! Our tasks are great, but with faith, courage, and strength of arms only we shall leave the battlefield unscathed! A new era of greatness is dawning on our lands. The shackles of fear and doubt have been thrown off. It is time for us to stand on our own!"

Acerion bows slightly in response to Dame Sharl's praise. She gives a speech that stirs the blood within the paladin's veins. With so many agents of the dark Gods seemingly walking freely upon this plane, Acerion can see no other way but for the Gods of good to help those who are most devout and determined in their cause to thwart the actions of these vile agents. While the lives of men and the mortal races should indeed live their lives and choose their paths freely, there is a cosmic balance that must be adhered to.

Acerion listens closely as Validar and the others discuss what should be done with Elcadan. He has been so removed from this aspect of his noble lineage that he is finding himself having to play catch up on such manners as court and politics. Therefore, he has nothing to add, but learns much during this time.

"No doubt you are right, Grondar. I just dislike this inaction. Our brotherhood teaches patience and meditation, but I fear I wasn't a very good student..."
Grondar wrote:"Uhm... Hold up a moment there, Ivy. I know you're eager to destroy more of these undead abominations, but we really don't know what else is out there. Overhearing the discussion with Ivy, Yusef chimes in. "I have to agree with our dwarven friend, Ivy. The risk just isn't worth it. Please, be at peace. The time is not yet now."

Sherra's suggestion leaves Yusef feeling uneasy. No doubt she can do what she says, but the enemy may have abilities that they don't know about, and Yusef would not like to see her expose herself so. Still, he remains quiet rather than shame her by voicing his concerns.

"So, how did it go up on the wall, Sherra? It looks like the invaders have been driven back for now. You must have done well."

Lyonessa:

After Lady Lyonessa concludes her song, Sir Corley will approach. “Lady Lyonessa, I wish of boon of you if you please. Right now we are in the dark as far as what we are facing. Would you consent to allowing Dusk to fly out and scout the area around the fortress? He need only see what is going on and can stay as far as way as need be. We suspect that unknown beings are controlling this force of undead. We need to find these persons and eliminate them with extreme prejudice. If we can find them, then we can deal with them.”

"I had thought about that actually, Sir Corley," Lyonessa replies. "I decided against bringing it up because Dusk would be scouting an area with enemies already prepared for battle, so they might be more aware of Dusk's flight and seek to slay him. Probably not the minor undead, but rather whomever is leading them."

"Now that is definitely acceptable," Lyonessa answers. "I still would not want Dusk to risk himself but it would allow him to return to us should he somehow be spotted and attacked."

Lyonessa will call Dusk to her so that the spell may be cast. She will then explain to her familiar what she would like him to do. Visibility is still poor and Dusk may have a hard time flying if the winds return, but she will explain they need him to find anyone who seems to be leading these undead.
