New Frontiers #74

Q&A:
(Is the wall closeable or is it open for good now?)
On its own, the wall has remained open thus far.
(OOC note: not sure which artifacts, if any, exist in this world, so Acerion's question could be more referring to planar stories he heard rather than anything world specific)
You can assume that you’ve at least heard of a variety of artifacts that exist in a typical D&D world. Whether they actually exist here or are just myths is another matter entirely. Artifacts such as the Rod of Seven Parts, the Eye of Vecna, and the Orbs of Dragonkind, etc.

Shield of Justice:

After the chamber holding the Shield has been accessed, Sir Acerion goes up to examine the Shield. As he touches it he feels the power of Heironeous smoldering within it. The Shield of Justice is easily picked up; in spite of its large size it feels feather-light to Acerion’s touch. Acerion’s axe glows golden as if in approval.

As Acerion holds the Shield of Justice before him, something strange happens. The Holy Artifact leaps out of his hands and slams hard into the Knight’s Chest! There’s a puff of dust and the Shield has completely vanished!

A golden glow comes over Acerion’s armor and when it fades the armor has changed colors. The armor is now dark blue in color with silver trim. A silver lightning bolt is emblazoned over the Knight's chest. A voice whispers into Acerion’s ear that the Shield of Justice has merged into his armor for its protection. It can be recalled when the time comes to place the Artifact in Ardelphia. (More in the GM Notes.)

Lord Sharadin:

Next day, Lord Sharadin arrives bearing the Stone House. On the second level of the fortress the cube is unloaded of men and many supplies.
Sir Validar wrote:"We have recovered the Shield of Justice from its hidden place and the haunting of this Fortress has been ended.”
“That is most excellent news, Sir Validar! That means we have half the artifact in our possession. Since Sir Acerion has been entrusted to protect and carry the shield, I see no reason why it should not remain in his care until needed.”
Sir Validar wrote:"As for the enemy, we have not located them, except for a small advance guard..." Validar trails off as he speaks, a thought coming to him. His brow furrows for a moment as he searches his memory. "I am concerned that there is a possibility that the humanoid forces have already bypassed this location. We have not been able to locate them on the Broken Lands side of the Fortress."
“That is always a possibility,” Lord Sharadin admits. “I will ask Silvarn to scout the areas both north and south of the Fortress. If the orc force is out there, she’ll find them.”
Sir Validar wrote:"The King indicated that they were within a week of the Fortress and we left within 3 days. While I do not feel it likely that we were too late to stop the humanoids, it may be prudent to have someone scout the lands on this side of the Fortress."
“That was the intelligence that we had. Both the second and third wave of orcs came from a common camp on the northern side of the Broken Land Mountains. The second wave had a shorter distance to travel than the third. Given the distance and the elements they had to contend with was how we arrived at determining we had a week before they reached Fort Fletcher. With the foulness of the weather here as you’ve described, I am not surprised they have not reached the fort yet. But as you say, scouting to the south is prudent.”

“I do know that the force led by Alon and Sharl did meet with great success. They engaged the enemy force and routed them. The orcs were not prepared for battle and lacking any strong leaders their ranks fell apart and they fled. Also, two of the sons of the Duke of Corunglain were rescued from the Underdark by Drakkimor and his associates.”
Sir Validar wrote:Validar listens to Sharadin's information, many questions forming as he speaks. "Very well. I will inform the rest of the Guardians that Sir Corley is in charge until we return. Our situation is stable, but it is not without threats. We are concerned that there is the possibility that the Cold Maiden is marshalling her forces in this area. Whether they would be a direct threat to this location is obviously not yet known. We would request some additional priest assistance from one of the deities that is in opposition to her. I think the danger is enough of a threat to warrant such precautions."
“That would explain the foul weather,” Lord Sharadin agrees. “It is another thing I will ask Silvarn to search for. If what you suggest is true, then this is another threat we’ll have to deal with. Far better to nip it in the bud before it gets out of hand. I will make inquires into gaining the services of Priests of Lathander.”
Sir Validar wrote:"It is good to hear that the Duke of Corunglain has been located, but what is this situation in Elcadan? I have had my concerns about them since the new King has taken the throne. In truth, before then as well. Did the King and Lady Allonica return safely from the meeting with the Duke?"
“Jallarzi has been traveling with the King these last few days, so what little I know is what has been passed on to me. I do know that both are safe and healthy and await us in Corunglain. The King wishes to let everyone know what happened in Elcadan during our conference.”
Sir Validar wrote:"Responding back to Lord Sharadin, he adds, "The situation may seem stable here, but without the location of the enemy determined, I am not as comfortable as I would like to be. Sir Corley can certainly maintain defense of this Fortress if the enemy were to attack while we were gone, but it would be unjust to deny him potential information. We can still be ready to go to Corunglain by mid-afternoon."
“A wise precaution, Validar. Just don’t take too long. I believe that we’ll have much to discuss this afternoon.”

New Priests:
Sir Acerion wrote:"Greetings to you, brothers," Acerion says as he greets the incoming priests of Heironeous, "and to you, faithful Priests of Helm." He will offer to take both groups to their respective shrines, taking the time to speak with them of what transpired with the apparitions and their hard-earned release. He will add to the priests of Heironeous, "I have labored to return the shrine to its former glory. I fear there is still much to do, but I hope I have eased the task for you a bit."
“Well met, Sir Acerion,” Rexford responds. Judging by the piping on his robes, Acerion would put Rexford as the senior priest of the group. (7th level.)

“Words of your deeds have already reached our ears. You’re becoming something of a rising star in our ranks. It is an honor to meet you and serve with you in these trying times.”

Rexford will introduce his associates Eaton (4th level) and Radly (1st level.)

All three priests are dressed in chain mail and wear their blue robes with silver trim over them. All carry battleaxes and have their Holy Symbols dangling around their necks.

“I am sure that you’ve done all that you could to restore the Shrine to its proper glory. Rest assured, Brother, that we will complete the task you have started.”

The Priests of Helm both wear plate mail armor with shields and carry maces. Emblazoned on the chests of their armor and the shields is the symbol of Helm surrounded by a glowing sunburst. The symbol of helm is a gauntleted hand with an open eye in the palm. Fenwick is the senior priest of the two.

Those who observe both men will note that they are always on watch, taking in their surroundings and being aware of all that goes on around them. Fenwick will thank Sir Acerion for showing them to the Shrine of Helm.

Both groups of priests begin to move their gear to their respective Shrines and work to restore them.
Yusef wrote:There are priests among those who have just arrived. Yusef will introduce himself to them. Though he hadn't really expected it, he's a little disappointed that none of Celestian's earthly representatives are among them. Perhaps there are one or two of his faithful among the assembled group; he will have to introduce himself around over the next few days and see what he can learn.
Both groups of priests will be wary of Yusef, given his appearance, but will be cordial. Followers of Helm and Heironeous were specifically sought after for this mission as both faiths already had Shrines here. No slight to any of the other worthy deities was intended.

New people:
Sir Validar wrote:"Greetings, Sergeant Irwin. We will be needing to make repairs to the ballista here, but several are close to operational. I want your men to get them running as soon as possible. I am certain that you and your men will distinguish yourselves in the defense of this Fortress."
“Right away, milord,” Sergeant Irwin responds. “Good to be serving under your command.”

The Pyris men take their equipment up to the ballista hallway and begin their work right away.
Lyonessa wrote:Regardless of whatever Validar can offer, Lyonessa will help coordinate storage of supplies and give thought to the coming meal. If she gets some volunteers or word of future arriving support staff, which will lighten her mood. Still, these troops are not to blame, so she will plan on entertaining them with songs and smiles during their meals and off-duty time.
Once the supplies are properly stored, things begin to settle down in the Fort a bit. A group of men off duty take to the kitchen to begin prepping meals. Given the size of the contingent here, cooking will be taking place almost around the clock.

The elves brought their own food stores with them and do not require any cooking for them. The elves secure their belongings in one of the larger quarters and will share just one room. They take lookout positions as requested.

Lyonessa will prove to be quite popular and her efforts to entertain are well met. So much so that small crowds will gather about the bardess just to be close to her.

Much like the elves, the dwarves go their own way under the direction of Aria and Grondar. They’ve also brought their own food that will last for several weeks. Aria, Grondar, and Farian are welcomed warmly by the new arrivals.

Unlike the other groups, the dwarves are not an existing combat unit. Instead they were selected with an eye to help reclaim the dwarven lands in this area. So there warriors, miners, and even a Priest of Moradin among them. Five are female, and the rest male. None of these new arrivals are over fourth level.

At Aria’s urging, the dwarves retire to one of the chambers to discuss matters and partake of the food the dwarves brought. (Human food is not ideal to the dwarven palate. Dwarves like their food on what humans would consider to be the bland side, lacking in seasoning. Meat, vegetables, and breads are their primary favorites.)

Aria goes over what has transpired thus far and a plan of attack is hatched. At Sir Validar’s urging the dwarves concentrate on their mines. The dwarves split into three groups. One works to deliver more coal to the fortress, while another group transports it down to the furnace. The third group works to clear the blockage in the tunnel. The logical way to dispose of the debris would be to dump it down the chasm, but Baluk suggest that down there should be scouted first. Just in case any other tunnels open up into the rift that might be covered by the debris. Scouting the mine tunnel on the other side of the chasm is also suggested.

During the day all the female dwarves will come up to Grondar and request that they receive Lady Truesilver's blessings. Several of the men as well.

Scouting:

At Sir Validar’s request, Lord Sharadin agrees to hold off his departure. The weather, however, has other ideas. There is not a snowstorm, but rather high winds. The snow that has already fallen is kicked up and there is much blowing and drifting.

The winds make Flying difficult. The mages have almost no control during the higher gusts, but are able to ride it out for about half an hour. Visibility is low down in the valley. Sir Acerion fares better on his pegasus, but the ride is a rough one. Nothing is seen moving outside the fortress.

Once that task is complete, Lord Sharadin has Sir Acerion and Sir Validar step inside the Stone House. The Archmage closes it up again and teleports away.

The new arrivals are hard at work and many eyes are on guard for an impending attack. Fort Fletcher has returned to life once more.

Lords Council:

A moment later, Sharadin reappears in the arrival chamber in Corunglain. The Stone House is opened once more to let out the Knights. The trio them make their way to the Great Hall that the King has been using here in Corunglain. The group is announced and ushered inside.

Everyone else is already here waiting for you. That includes, the King himself, Dame Sharl, Sir Alon, Lord Vandevic, Lord Vorloi, Lord Torenscu, Lord Antonic, Lady Penhaligon, and Lady Salavarian. There are two guests here as well that you are familiar with. Crysania, the high priestess of Heironeous you met before and Silvarn, who Validar knows is secretly a Silver Dragon.

A buffet is also present for those who are hungry. The gathering starts out with bringing everyone up to date with what is going on.

Sir Alon describes the battle against the second wave of the orc horde to the north of Corunglain. They caught the enemy force while camping and attacked right away, not giving them time to form a proper defensive posture. The battle was decidedly one-sided and the orcs were routed. They fled back towards the Broken Lands.

Lady Teris describes the situation at Fort Runnels as being quiet. No trouble there.

Crysania relates how her associates pursued the Drow spotted in the great orc cave deeper into the Underdark. They managed to overtake the Drow who were slowed down by the number of slaves they were taking with them. The battle was short and decisive. All of the would-be slaves were rescued and the drow either slain or driven off. Among those rescued were two of the four sons of the Duke of Corunglain. The oldest of the sons has taken over rule of Corunglain until his father can be found.

Sir Validar and Sir Acerion cover their adventures at Fort Fletcher. How the Shield of Justice has been found and is being carried by Sir Acerion. The Fort is no longer haunted and in serviceable condition, although no enemy forces have yet to reach it.

Lord Sharadin reports that Sherwood and the Elves have departed from Karn’s Keep. They are using a magic item called the Crown of the Stars. The Crown allows the wearer to magical control and fly normally sea-going vessels. Sharadin is having Sherwood test the magic item as part of their mission for the elves.

Lord Sharadin also relates a strange incident at Karn’s Keep. The priestess who tends the Azrella Shrine there, Maya, had a strange vision and one that frightened her. She claims that Keln is not dead, but rather still alive and plotting against us. (This occurred in The Frontier #132.)

(Lady Allonica is not here, as detailed before and is edited out of the Council.)

Finally, the discussion turns to the two most important items. Silvarn relates the results of her search for the Duke of Corunglain. She is in her typical elfin form.

“Well met, nobility of Cynalon. It was requested of me that I attempt to locate Duke Vardon. The Duke and some of his family were taken by the High Priestess of Hextor to the city they call New Keln on the coast of the former Keln Lands.”

(The exact location of New Keln was discovered on documents the Seekers retrieved in The Frontier game.)

“I’ve determined that the main Temple to that foul God is in New Keln. They are in possession of the Duke and his family. As some of you may know, they had planned to sacrifice a great many magic items to gain an artifact called the Trumpet of Acheron. However, it appeared that this plan had been foiled thanks to the efforts of numerous adventuring bands. Many Hextor priests had been killed and their sacrifice items taken.”

“This is not the case. They intend to sacrifice those items they have and the lives of the nobility of Corunglain! With it, they hope to gain the use of the Trumpet. Legend has it that he who blew the Trumpet would summon up an army of undead beings to do his will. From what I learned, the sacrifice will take place tomorrow night at midnight!”

“This cannot be allowed to take place,” the King will say firmly. “If the Hextorites gain control of this Trumpet it will cause great strife on that side of the kingdom. We’ll have to make a daring raid on their main temple before this can happen. We can use the Stone House to move our forces into New Keln and right up to their vile temple. Our mission will be simple. Rescue the Duke and slay as many of the Hextorites as we can. Do whatever we must to stop this sacrifice from taking place. This is a grave mission and I’ll be taking volunteers for it.”

Without hesitation, Dame Sharl, Sir Alon, and Crysania volunteer for the mission.

Once that matter is settled, the King will speak about his experiences in Elcadan.

“As you may know, Lady Salavarian and myself went to Elcadan to enlist the aid of the Duke during Corunglain’s time of need.”

“The Duke kept us waiting for an unusually long time. Finally the Duchess did appear. However, she was not what she seemed! Instead I saw her as a foul demoness!”

“The King's Royal Regalia has magical properties,” Lady Salavarian explains. “Among which is the ability to resist being charmed or otherwise controlled by others. It also allows him to see through illusions. I can only imagine that the Demoness thought she could bring the King under her control.”

“I reached for my sword and struck down the struck down the foul creature where she stood”, the King continues. “Before I could send her back to the Abyss, she fled using magic.”

“My friends, the awful truth is this: The Duke of Elcadan and his entire family have been dead for decades. Demons have been secretly in control of the city for a long time. Our investigation indicates that these demons are members of the infamous Deville family.”

“As it stands now, Elcadan has no ruling family. There is no line of succession, unlike the situation in Corunglain. A new Duke will need to be appointed to that position and begin the task of restoring order to Elcadan. Any nominations?”

“The surviving members of the vile Deville family will have to be hunted down as well. They’ve poisoned or kingdom for far too long.”

Fort Fletcher:

Back at the fortress, everything seems tranquil. The guards are settling in and the dwarves are off in their mines. The winds continue to be fierce and from the observation platforms it is hard to even see the valley below.

But finally something is spotted out in the storm! An alert is sounded and Sir Corley is summoned. There is movement at the base of the fortress! What the elves describe as “ice-blue orcs” are climbing on top of each other, forming living ladders to reach the parapets of the fortress! These orcs are utterly silent and are unaffected by the cold.

The humans present have trouble spotting them, but will do so once they come close enough up the side of the fortress.

GM Notes:

That should keep everyone busy!

The Shield of Justice has temporarily merged with Sir Acerion’s armor and changed the armor's colors to that of Heironeous. The Shield is not sentient, but does have some minor magical effects on its own. The Shield improves Acerion’s AC by 3. It effectively doubles the range of any of Acerion’s innate paladin abilities and those abilities he has by way of the Axe of the Valorous.

This means that Acerion can:

Detect Evil up to 120’.
Radiates Protection from Evil in a 20’ Radius
Can provide 50% Magic Resistance in a 20’ Radius
Installs Courage in a 40’ Radius
The Axe emits light in a 60’ Radius

Those at the fortress will have several rounds to prepare before the first of the ice-blue orcs will reach an parapet, assuming that you even allow them to do so.

Now what?

Sir Validar -

Validar watches curiously as the Shield of Justice is lifted by Sir Acerion and then suddenly merges with the knight's armor in a blinding flash. The paladin's armor is now dark blue and emblazoned with the Lightning Bolt of Heironeous.

"It seems you have been chosen as a worthy individual to represent your patron. But I must ask, do you know if this is a permanent situation or can the Shield be reclaimed again?"

"At any rate, this seems to be a confirmation that the Shields should not be brought together at this time. Nor is it in much danger of being taken now."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

"We have recovered the Shield of Justice from its hidden place and the haunting of this Fortress has been ended.”

“That is most excellent news, Sir Validar! That means we have half the artifact in our possession. Since Sir Acerion has been entrusted to protect and carry the shield, I see no reason why it should not remain in his care until needed.”

"Very well. I would agree with that assessment as well."

"As for the enemy, we have not located them, except for a small advance guard..." Validar trails off as he speaks, a thought coming to him.

"That will certainly help to put my mind at ease. Not knowing what has happened to the enemy is rather bothersome."

Lord Sharadin reiterates the information pertaining to the orc army heading this way and in truth it does seem unlikely that they could have passed this way so soon. Also the other force was already routed by the troops led by Sir Alon and Dame Sharl. "That is very good news. They enemy attack has been blunted at every turn. We should be free of their annoying attacks until at least Spring arrives." Further, two of the Duke of Corunglain's sons have been recovered. That is also good news for this territory.

Grondar:

When Grondar hears of what happened with Acerion and the Shield of Justice, the dwarf seeks out the Blue Lady's paladin. "Acerion! I just heard the tale! This is quite an honor." Grondar examines the new look of Acerion's armor. "This suits you well, my friend. I can think of no one better qualified to carry the Shield of Justice until such time as it is needed."

---

Grondar goes out of his way to greet the priest of Moradin in particular. "Well met, son of the Soulforge! Your presense here is a boon to us all. I'm certain we can work together to see that the spiritual needs of our people here are met."
Validar wrote:"Very well. While that is not the ideal situation, it is certainly one which can be overcome. I agree with your assessment that the coal supply is the primary concern. However, while we are not in direct danger of attack, I would recommend that your soldiers concentrate more on removing that blockage than engaging in guard duties or direct defense. In that way we can possibly be further along towards readying the assault on Hammerfall."

"If you would make me a listing of what will be needed to build a bridge to span the chasm and to shore up the tunnel where needed, I will do my best to have it all brought here at the soonest opportunity."
Validar releases the dwarves from most of the responsibility for defending the fort; instead, they are free to work toward making Hammerfall operational again. "Thank you, Sir Validar," Grondar responds. "We'll provide you with a list as soon as we are able. We have some skilled miners in this detachment, and they should be able to evaluate the situation efficiently."

The dwarves meet later as a group to discuss their strategy regarding the reinstitution of the mines of Hammerfall. The discussion is held over a meal of traditional dwarven food, as is commonly the case with dwarves, and Grondar is quite pleased with the repast.
Grondar volunteers to work with those transporting the coal to the furnace. His skills don't really fit the other roles. Looking at Farian, he says, "Farian, perhaps you should lead the exploration of the chasm and the tunnel beyond. I recommend taking a couple of our new friends with you - whomever is best qualified for that kind of work."

Grondar is glad to preform the rituals for all those who desire his patron's blessing. He informs each of them that he also leads devotions every morning, and all are welcome to join him whenever they feel so inclined.

When he hears word of the attack, Grondar will race off to consult with Corley to see if he and the dwarven warriors should assist in the fort's defense.
_________________________________________________________
Grondar, Aria and the soldiers among the dwarves could probably be spared from their work for a little while to help defend the fortress - Corley's call. The miners and other specialists should probably continue their work.

Yusef:
Validar wrote:"Indeed. It was not specifically mentioned to bring the Shield to Corunglain upon finding it. Only to be on the lookout for it. And while my feelings are that it is too risky to have two or three of them in one location, the King may have other plans to which we are not privy."
Just as they are discussing the subject of what to do with the Shield of Justice, it suddenly becomes a moot point. Acerion picks up the stone Shield with one hand, as though it were a simple wooden shield. There is a moment where the Shield glows, and his battle axe picks up the effect as well. Then, suddenly, the Shield merges with Acerion's armor, changing and marking the armor with its magic.

For some moments, Yusef simply looks on, stunned by what has happened.
Validar wrote:"It seems you have been chosen as a worthy individual to represent your patron. But I must ask, do you know if this is a permanent situation or can the Shield be reclaimed again?"

"At any rate, this seems to be a confirmation that the Shields should not be brought together at this time. Nor is it in much danger of being taken now."
Yusef nods in agreement. "Your patron looks on you with favor, Lord Acerion."
Sherra wrote:Sherra will be glad Yusef is near, somewhat aware he seems to be going out of his way to be close by. She doesn't mind one bit, and will share a couple of her more uplifting tales of her times at sea while they work.
Yusef enjoys the stories almost as much as he enjoys Sherra's company. He will reciprocate with a few of the more interesting tales from his travels and his time with the brotherhood, though he certainly doesn't have her gift for the telling.
GMMad wrote:Both groups of priests will be wary of Yusef, given his appearance, but will be cordial. Followers of Helm and Heironeous were specifically sought after for this mission as both faiths already had Shrines here. No slight to any of the other worthy deities was intended.
Yusef has seen the looks in the eyes of the priests numerous times before; such is the nature of his life. There is nothing he can do about it, so he has learned to accept it for the most part, though it is not easy. He does his best not to take offense at their reaction or the lack of diversity among the dieties represented.

Later, when the supplies arrive, he gladly assists Sherra in her work with the defensive blocks and any lifts that still need repairing.

As they are working, suddenly the alarm is sounded. An attack! Yusef races off to collect the enchanted bottles he made, then reports to Lord Corley for assignment.

Sir Validar -

Validar releases the dwarves from most of the responsibility for defending the fort; instead, they are free to work toward making Hammerfall operational again. "Thank you, Sir Validar," Grondar responds. "We'll provide you with a list as soon as we are able. We have some skilled miners in this detachment, and they should be able to evaluate the situation efficiently."

"We have many concerns and tasks to complete as a part of this overall mission. The sooner we are able to make a move to reclaim Hammerfall, the quicker we will also be able to begin our assault on Ardelphia and reclaim Stone Ridge as well."
-------------------------------

Chareos listens intently as the subject of a Battle Mage comes to pass. He had never thought or heard of a mage of this type. Surely Sharadin never truly touched on it. Perhaps he merely overlooked such a thing in his own role, as mentor and father. The idea of rounding himself out more to give the others a more solid backbone if the time came to such a thing proved sound.

The young man begins to speaks his mind before ever registering the words leaving his lips. “If such a mage does exist then surely our kingdom would only benefit from such a person and their experiences."

"Indeed, that is true. We are in dangerous times. The Kingdom is teetering on the precipice between destruction and greatness and it will take all of us to do great deeds to bring Cynalon back to where she belongs."

"I have never been one to be so self-absorbed to forget of my comrades though I do lack such knowledge of military tactics and training. A fact that could be rectified,” he states evenly. “Perhaps I do question things too much but isn’t that the thought process of tactics and strategy? To find the best way to render an opponent broken and defeated.”

"Indeed, you would be correct. Although questioning too much can be a detriment, as you can engage in what is known as analysis paralysis. The trick is to be able to determine as many contingencies as possible given the situation and make decisive decisions. It is a learned skill and requires different thinking for strategical operations as opposed to tactical missions."

“If such a Battle Mage does exist, then perhaps it's time this mage learn the ways of battle; to protect our home and our people to the best of my abilities.” His words become more confident and determined. “You are schooled in the way of Tactics and Seige, Sir Validar. If you were to teach me, you would not be disappointed.”

"An interesting thought, my friend," Validar says, a little surprised by this sudden exclamation. "A Battle Mage is something that is always needed. I would relish the thought of one in my command. It is not a subject that one undertakes lightly, nor does one become proficient overnight. It is a skill learned over time and honed in battle. But if you are willing to dedicate yourself to the task and to the use of your skills when completed, then I will agree to begin your training." Validar claps the fighter-mage on the shoulder. "You have the courage to complete the task certainly. And your skills as a swordsman will only help the situation. I think you would make a viable candidate indeed."
-------------------------------

"Greetings, Sergeant Irwin. We will be needing to make repairs to the ballista here, but several are close to operational. I want your men to get them running as soon as possible. I am certain that you and your men will distinguish yourselves in the defense of this Fortress."

“Right away, milord,” Sergeant Irwin responds. “Good to be serving under your command.” The Pyris men take their equipment up to the ballista hallway and begin their work right away.

"It is good to see familiar colors on the walls, sergeant," Validar says with a slight smile. He knows the defensive engines will be in good hands.

During the talk with Lord Sharadin, the discussion of Auril's forces possibly amassing in the area is brought up.

"Indeed. I am concerned that we face more foes than originally expected. Like a rotten onion, each layer of enemy we peel off reveals a deeper and ranker evil than the one before it. Although whether the Cold Maiden's forces are part of the overall scheme remains to be seen, it is still a threat which we must prepare for."

"It is good to hear that the Duke of Corunglain has been located, but what is this situation in Elcadan? I have had my concerns about them since the new King has taken the throne. In truth, before then as well. Did the King return safely from the meeting with the Duke?"

“Jallarzi has been traveling with the King these last few days, so what little I know is what has been passed on to me. I do know that both are safe and healthy and await us in Corunglain. The King wishes to let everyone know what happened in Elcadan during our conference.”

"That is good news to hear. I expected the worst from this visit to that pit of vipers known as Elcadan. Nothing good can come from dealing with them. We will all be safer when the Duke is deposed and a proper leader takes over the reigns there." Validar is relieved to know that the King is well after visiting Pyris' neighbor and enemy. Had it been his choice, Validar would not have tried to negotiate with them, but rather to send an army to their doorstep.

Lord Sharadin agrees to let them the time to attempt another scouting mission, before Acerion accompanies them to Corunglain and the audience with the King.

“A wise precaution, Validar. Just don’t take too long. I believe that we’ll have much to discuss this afternoon.”

"Very well. That will put everyone more at ease, I should think." Validar wonders just what has transpired in the last 3 days. It seems that there is more to tell than what appears on the surface. Of course, anything involving Elcadan cannot be good."

Unfortunately, the weather is not cooperative for scouting and after a half hour, they return. The winds were far too fierce to get far and visibility too low to continue for long. "Again, the only consolation is that the enemy is not likely to get far in this weather. My only concern is that it is an indication that the Cold Maiden's forces are growing, or worse, on the march."

Chareos

Chareos watches the scene before him as a bright golden glow comes from both the shield and Acerion’s armor in quick succession. As the light fades and a dust settles the shield vanished into thin air! Even more amazing is that Lord Acerion’s armor has taken on a new form.

Chareos merely gazes at Sir Acerion’s armor in awe as he admires the new craftsmanship and etchings of Heironous colors and symbols.

-----------

As the discussion continues of where the enemy army is, a sudden thought comes to the young fighter mage. One that he hopes is not true. “If we are dealing with the Cold Maiden’s forces then perhaps that is why we have not yet seen them? They would blend into the surrounding landscape far to well.” He wonders out loud, “Argent felt something brush her leg when I picked her from the snow. It could have been a branch shifting but what if it was not? Perhaps they are somehow, someway traveling beneath the snow and ice, where our sight may not go.”
The winds make Flying difficult. The mages have almost no control during the higher gusts, but are able to ride it out for about half an hour. Visibility is low down in the valley. Sir Acerion fares better on his pegasus, but the ride is a rough one. Nothing is seen moving outside the fortress.
Touching back down on the Fort's walls Chareos lets his frustration get the better of him. “Damn this infernal weather! With this wind it is nearly impossible to fly. We would be hard pressed to see anything let alone an army. It is a shame we could scrye our foes, with a crystal ball.”
-------
"An interesting thought, my friend," Validar says, a little surprised by this sudden exclamation.

“I have never entered anything lightly, my friend. Nor will I ever. I know how hard each path one takes can be, barred and seemingly out of reach. It was not so long ago Lord Sharadin stood where you are now, reciting similar words but with no less meaning or truth within them.” Chareos smiles full heartedly when Sir Validar agrees to train him in tactics and strategy. “You will find, as Lord Sharadin did, I will not disappoint you or your trust.”

While Sir Validar and Sir Acerion are away Chareos will be in either two places, the strategy room pooring over maps of terrain and the fortress model familiarizing himself with it. Or in the Ballista corridor watching the men of Pyris working on the Ballistas. He notes to himself how they get the weapon and platform ready. As the last one begins to be repaired Chareos steps forward to Sgt Irwin. “Excuse me, Sgt. Irwin, I was just wondering if you could show me the basics of such a weapon? And if I could help in any way?”

------------
But finally something is spotted out in the storm! An alert is sounded and Sir Corley is summoned. There is movement at the base of the fortress! What the elves describe as “ice-blue orcs” are climbing on top of each other, forming living ladders to reach the parapets of the fortress! These orcs are utterly silent and are unaffected by the cold.
Hearing the call throughout the fort for Sir Corley, Chareos gathers up his staff and sword and follows after him. Hearing the elves description of ice blue orcs, Chareos begins to wonder just what these creatures are.

Hearing they seem to be immune to the cold, Chareos begins to wonder if these are minions of the Ice Maiden, some sort of undead (walking blue corpses) but one thing is probably certain… They all burn as well as the next.

Drawing his quarterstaff he will wait and listen to Corley’s decision. (He will have his broadsword +1 strapped to his back.)
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Sir Validar -

As the discussion of where the enemy army is a sudden thought comes to the young fighter mage. One that he hopes is not true. “ If we are dealing with the Cold Maiden’s forces then perhaps that is why we have not yet seen them? It could have been a branch shifting but what if it was not? Perhaps they are somehow someway traveling beneath the snow and ice, where our sight may not go.”

"I do not doubt that the Cold Maiden's forces would be difficult to see, especially in this weather. The orc army however would be much more obvious. We can only hope that one army eliminated the other, which would reduce our threats here."
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Touching back down on the Fort's walls Chareos lets his frustration get the better of him. “Damn this infernal weather! With this wind it is nearly impossible to fly. We would be hard pressed to see anything let alone an army. It is a shame we couldn't scrye our foes, with a Crystal Ball.”

"The weather is both a boon and a danger. We should not have to worry about the orcs arrival, but the increase in the storm's intensity once more indicates that the Cold Maiden's forces may be active. We must be doubly cautious."

"I do not know if a Crystal Ball would help since we have so few details about the enemy anyway."
----------------------------------------------------------------

Validar claps the fighter-mage on the shoulder. "You have the courage to complete the task certainly. And your skills as a swordsman will only help the situation. I think you would make a viable candidate indeed."

“I have never entered anything lightly, my friend. Nor will I ever. I know how hard each path one takes can be, Barred and seemingly out of reach. "I am pleased to stand in such honored company as Lord Sharadin. I will endeavor to train you as well as I am able. I mentioned before that I am a proponent of the more aggressive of the main strategic ideologies, but you will find that such a ideology is very sound and effective. I would like to think that I have much to teach you that will make you a good strategist."

The Lords Council...

Sir Validar -

The Stone House is opened and the other lords as well as the King are waiting for them. The knights are ushered to the Great Hall of the Corunglian Keep and greetings are made. Crysania and Silvarn are both here as well.

As food is being served, Validar will gratefully accept the invitation. The food at the Fortress has been fine, but a good meal is hard to pass up.

So far things have gone well in the last week and each of the missions is on target for success. The 2nd orc army was routed, Fort Runnels is under control and two of the Duke's sons were recovered in the Underdark. In additon, their own situation has been stabilized, despite the additional threat of Auril and her minions of ice and cold.

When the time comes, Validar will relate the situation at Fort Fletcher. "We have been successful so far. The advance guard of orcs who were there were promptly dealt with and we determined the source of the apparent haunting of the Fortress as well. We have managed to secure Fort Fletcher and repairs are in progress. Currently the location is serviceable and should continue to improve."

"The orc army itself has not been located, although Lord Sharadin has indicated he will ask Silvarn to scout the areas both on the Broken Land side and our own just to be certain. The weather has been quite foul and this leads to another potential danger. We have speculated that perhaps the Cold Maiden, Auril, has attempted to marshall her forces in this area. It makes sense, since this is a land in turmoil from many sources lately. If such is the case, Fort Fletcher will be facing several enemies. We have informed Lord Sharadin, but I would humbly request some assistance from the sect of Lathander to help oppose this new enemy."

"We have begin exploration of the tunnels to Hammerfall. Apparently, the initial scouting indicates that a chasm has formed in the tunnels and a bridge will be needed to be built to connect the tunnels again. We also request the necessary tools and equipment and supplies to complete this endeavor. We have concluded that especially with the terrible weather in our area, that the underground route will be the most effective way to enter Hammerfall once more and reclaim its halls."

"As for the haunting of Fort Fletcher, I will let Sir Acerion speak on the details, but suffice it to say that we have not only cleared the Fortress of its 'ghosts', but have also reclaimed the Shield of Justice." Validar will move to the side of Sir Acerion and gesture to indicate his armor. "Sir Acerion is the current guardian of this artifact and with it we now have 50% of the Guardian Shield in our control."

Validar returns to his seat to allow Sir Acerion to complete the explanation of their mission to date.

Validar is intrigued by the mention of the Crown of Stars. There is much military significance to the use of mobile war machines. He read some stories as a child of such flying ships, but hadn't given them much consideration. Clearly, the King is experimenting with such a thing now. There is much to consider with this information.

Validar is not surprised to hear of the vision that Emperor Keln is not yet destroyed. The Hextorites are far too organized and able to strike in multiple areas for there not to be a greater power behind them.

Farian

Soon after meeting the assembled dwarves, Farian nudges Grondar in the ribs and motions towards one of the female dwarves, “Will you look at the beard on her!” he says under his breath. Though quickly looks away from Aria as she glares at him, giving her a helpless shrug as if saying ’What?'

Aria gathers the dwarves contigent and calls a meeting. Moving off the large room Farian rests easily against a wall, with a large drumstick or piece of meat in hand. He listens to Aria relive their last few days at the fort. When the topic of the mines comes up Farian’s ears perk up and he throws his leftover bone to the floor.
Looking at Farian, he says, "Farian, perhaps you should lead the exploration of the chasm and the tunnel beyond. I recommend taking a couple of our new friends with you - whomever is best qualified for that kind of work."
Farian raises an eyebrow toward the dwarven priest in disbelief. “Lead?” he asks incredulously, “No offense but Wayfinders don’t lead…..we scout! Besides I could move faster meself!” He adds quickly, “No telling what maybe down there, if there is anything.”

“Though if there is anyone here who's be knowing how to climb and can be quiet about it then I have no objections takin' 'em with me.”

“If we have some grappling hooks we could be makin' a rope bridge above the chasm, Least till the bridge is built.”

When the time comes Farian will make ready his climbing gear as he and the other dwarves head for the mines. He will secure his line to whatever will hold his weight (and not move) And begin repelling down the chasm wall. If his rope isn’t long enough to reach the bottom he will go as far as he can and then return. If he spots any trouble he will use his ring to hide him.

(I'm assuming Farian will be in the caves exploring when the call to arms comes)

Lady Gabriella Allonica

Post by Gabriella »

Lady Gabriella Allonica:

The Lady Gabriella tries to wait patiently at the council gathering. Lord Sharadin has yet to return with Sir Validar and Sir Acerion. The wait and uncertainty are excruciating. But, she tries to past the time by lightly nibbling on buffet food and speaking with her fellow council members.

Finally, the doors open and the three men enter. Gabriella lets out a sigh of relief and will smile sweetly at Sir Validar when their eyes meet.

The meeting goes pretty much as she expects, although some of the happenings are news to her. Finally the King reveals just what transpired in Elcadan. It still unnerves her to think that whenever she had dealt with Duchess Marta in the past it was really a demoness in disguise!

The King finishes his tale and throws a question out to the floor.
King Victor wrote:“As it stands now, Elcadan has no ruling family. There is no line of succession, unlike the situation in Corunglain. A new Duke will need to be appointed to that position and begin the task of restoring order to Elcadan. Any nominations?”
Taking a deep breath, Lady Gabriella will stand up.

“Fellow councilmen, I have a nomination. I’ve had several days now to compose my thoughts on the matter at hand. As the King stated, there are no surviving members of the Duke’s bloodline. Furthermore, we cannot be sure just how widespread this corruption goes. At this time we simply cannot trust any of the Elcadan nobility or even the outlying Baronies.”

“Therefore, it is my opinion that we must go outside of Elcadan for a new Duke. Our candidate must be someone already familiar with Elcadan, but not directly involved with the city. Corunglain has its own troubles right now that preclude it from adding additional lands.”

“That leaves us with three candidates that have had some dealings with Elcadan, but are not directly involved with them. Baron Relon of Pyris, Baron Grellus of Restenford, and Duke Lucius of Athenos. All three are worthy candidates. Therefore what I propose is that the Elcadan lands be divided up amongst these men. Allow each of their territories to grow so that all benefit from this tragic turn of events.”

“Baron Grellus could be given control of the lands west of the Streel River. This would put the City of Elstrich under his domain. Duke Lucius the southern lands, perhaps up to Hendry. That would leave the rest for Baron Relon. As Baron Relon has had the most dealings and conflict with Elcadan, I feel that he is the most qualified to take control of the city itself. His territory would comprise what remains of Elcadan, including the main city, Ansimont and Wrasseldown. “

“No matter what we decide, someone is going to be disappointed. At least with my suggestion everyone who borders Elcadan will gain something. Thank you.”

Gabriella will then take her seat and wait for the debate to begin!

Sir Validar -

Finally, the doors open and the three men enter. Gabriella lets out a sigh of relief and will smile sweetly at Sir Validar when their eyes meet.

Validar immediately looks for his lady as he enters the room. A quick smile also graces his face as he sees her there. Her smil seems to light up the room despite the serious matter at hand. As decorum is necessary in this setting, he does not rush to her side, though he would like to do so. When the opportunity comes to greet her personally, he kisses her hand and takes a place next to her at the table.

Silvarn indicates that the Duke of Corunglain, Vardon, was taken to New Keln and is being held there. Surprisingly the sacrifice that the thought was stopped after the Seige of Gateway was lifted is still set to go. It is unlikely that the dragon is incorrect, so they need to stop this horrible sacrifice.

Validar thinks long and hard about the situation. Finally he speaks," After the Seige of Gateway was lifted, we thought that the sacrifice would be thwarted. If it has not, then it is a dire threat to the safety of the entire Kingdom, not just any single part of it. We could be overrun by undead."

"While the threat to our lands is still strong, I am confident in our defenses at Fort Fletcher and the progress we have begun at reclaiming Hammerfall. I swore to see the vile slugs defeated and their sacrifice ended. I cannot back away from that oath. I too volunteer to join the attack against the Hextorites in New Keln. Afterall, a few days are not going to alter the situation in our lands much and if the Trumpet is recovered, we will have much woe in all of our lands."

Validar will turn to Sir Acerion and the rest of the Lords to gauge their responses.
----------------------------------------------------

The King then explains about the situation in Elcadan. Validar is not surprised by the revelation that Elcadan is ruled by demons. He was already sure that they consorted with them and that nothing but evil radiated from those cursed lands.

Validar notes that one of the Guardians has ties to the Deville family. He will have to mention this concern to Yusef when next they meet.

"It is no surprise to me to learn that Elcadan is a nest of demons. Pyris has claimed such for some time now. At least now, the truth is in the open and we can deal with these monsters once and for all time."

When the subject of nominations is brought up, Validar is certain that he will nominate his father, as a matter of course. Politically, however, it would not do to rush such a nomination since he has his own gain tied to such. A moment later, his lady, Gabriella, stands to address the council.

She speaks eloquently and Validar concentrates on her words. Her suggestion is well thought out and it is politically safe.

“No matter what we decide, someone is going to be disappointed. At least with my suggestion everyone who borders Elcadan will gain something. Thank you.”

Sir Validar will stand alongside her and speak. "I agree with her assessment of the situation. While it would be in my family's best interests to try and lobby for the entire lands of the Duchy, I would agree that splitting the lands up will help to eliminate the remnants of what was Elcadan."

"We must create a new territory and a new identity for the people who have suffered under their foul rule. The Kingdom is undergoing a rebirth and these lands are in need of the same rebirth."

"We will need assistance however, to do battle with the enemy. I am certain that the demons will not simply go away without a fight. While I am confident that we can destroy these foul monstrosities, there is the danger of war and civil war breaking out. Clearly they know they have been found out and we will need to move quickly on the matter."

"My only concern is whether the newly reclaimed Barony of Restenford will be able to bring to bear enough control over that area and offer enough troops to secure Elstritch initially."

Sir Corley

Post by Corley »

Sir Corley:

Time drags on after Sir Validar and Sir Acerion depart with Lord Sharadin. Corley will remain alert during this time, but will trust the men on duty to perform the tasks required of them.
“What has happened?” Sir Corley asks as he arrives on the scene. The situation is explained and he takes a look for himself. Indeed, ice-blue orcs are climbing over each other trying to reach the parapets!

“Those on the bottom must be getting crushed to death! Unless that is no longer a concern...”

An idea crosses Sir Corley’s mind as many of the Guardians arrive on the scene. A decision is quickly reached.
Grondar wrote:When he hears word of the attack, Grondar will race off to consult with Corley to see if he and the dwarven warriors should assist in the fort's defense.
“I would ask you to remain here with us, noble Grondar. However, we shall not disturb your brethren just yet. No need to unleash all the forces at our command so early in a battle.”
Yusef wrote:As they are working, suddenly the alarm is sounded. An attack! Yusef races off to collect the enchanted bottles he made, then reports to Lord Corley for assignment.
“Hold your position for now, Yusef. If what I suspect is true, then your priestly might will be needed.”
Chareos wrote:Hearing the call throughout the fort for Sir Corley, Chareos gathers up his staff and sword and follows after him. Hearing the elves description of ice blue orcs, Chareos begins to wonder just what these creatures are.
“Welcome, Lord Chareos. Stay in reserve for now. It would be unwise to expend all our resources so early in a siege.”

Turning to the elf commander, Sir Corley will say. “Let's bring these living ladders back down to the ground. Have your archers target the ‘rungs’ of these ladders. But allow one to nearly reach the parapets.”

To Lt. Wyndham, Corley adds, “Have a few of your men take some of the oil barrels and be prepared to pour them out where boiling oil used to be poured. At my command pour the oil. Once poured and it has run out of the fortress, we can ignite it with a torch from the inside.”

Turning to those present, “It is my belief that what we are witnessing is the orc army we were expecting. Except they’ve fallen into the Cold One’s clutches and now serve her as some kind of frozen zombies! No living creature could survive being trampled like those at the bottom of those living ladders are. No, they must no longer fear death as we do.”

Once Lady Ivy arrives, Corley will say to her, “Lady Ivy, we have need of your skills. I fear that those attacking us are actually undead. It is my understanding that you can sense the presence of such beings. What I need for you to do is confirm that we face undead. I’ve allowed one of the ladders to near the parapets. Once they are close enough try to get a reading on them.”

Assuming that Lady Ivy does find the enemy to be undead, Sir Corley will issue a series of commands. “Ballista men, back away from your stations. Priests take up those positions and be prepared to Turn the enemy as they approach.”

“Let loose with the Continual Light rocks. Let’s fully illuminate the battlefield. Start near the base of the fortress and work your way out.”

“Lieutenant Wyndham, have your men begin to pour the oil. Ignite it as soon as they are ready and clear!”

“Archers fire only when you have a clear target. Spellcasters continue to stand ready. This might be the beginning of a long siege. We’re only going to use enough force as necessary to hold our position until we know the scope of what we face. I will not waste resources unnecessarily.”

Chareos

"That said, I will give you something to ponder. It is a question once asked of me by an early mentor. Which is more valuable to a warrior, his sword or his armor? I can assure you it is not a simple question."

Chareos rolls the question over in his head for a few minutes. Many things come to mind as he approaches his task. After several minutes a thought comes to him.

“What type of warrior? One who relies on strength? Or speed? These are both factors in how one would approach such tactics,” he states, then adds.

“In a sense it is a matter of opinion. Much like beauty in the eye of the beholder. For one who does not use armor such as myself, he would surely answer his weapon. Though I am not quick to answer in such a way,” he adds thoughtfully. “I truly believe as I was taught by Sharadin that one’s weapon is an extension of himself to be used as both defensively and offensively, working in harmony with your defense or armor.”

“If you favor one over the other then you will be hard pressed. Without a weapon a warrior is limited to his defenses only able to defend himself with his mind and bare hands. Without armor, you will have to be mindful of your defenses.”

“Neither is more valuable than the other. It is a combination of the two that make a warrior what he or she is.” He does have an afterthought as well and soon adds. “But only in part, there are other factors besides armor and weapons.”

Sir Validar -

Validar listens to Chareos ramble around the thoughts in his head. A smile comes to his face as the questions coming rushing out.

"There are no questions to be answered, other than the original question. Otherwise, you are not thinking about the right question. As I said, it is not something that is easily answered. It took me many weeks to come up with the answer that my mentor was searching for. Many of my colleagues had quick answers and they were all incorrect."

"Think on it some more," Validar says as he heads off to do some more planning and inspections before they leave for Corunglain with Lord Sharadin.

Argent:
Chareos wrote:"Me? I wouldn't dream of such a thing," saying in a mock hurt tone... "Perhaps," he says with quick wink of his right eye. As a grin plays about his face, he walks to catch up with Argent. Out in the hallway, he ads, "Or perhaps waiting for the right person or time to share my experiences," while casting her a curious sideways glance.
“Well kitchen work isn’t the most glamorous of tasks, but I do so enjoy a good meal, thus making it something of a necessary evil. But it can be fun at times. With the proper assistance of course.”
Aria wrote:"Damn annoying," Aria echoes. "That just leaves the coal in the cave as the only supply we can get at and that won't last the winter. We'll need to get a bridge across that gap and new tracks laid to continue supplying coal."
“I may have a possible solution in the near future,” Argent will say upon hearing this. “I am close to mastering a whole new level of magicks and among them is a spell called Wall of Stone. Once I am able to cast it, I could simply create a span to cross this chasm. Thanks to the magic of the spell, the new bridge would merge into the rock around it.”
Sir Validar wrote:"I am not sure that you could honestly take it that far," Sir Validar responds. "Being a commoner does not make one automatically subservient to a noble. These men are all military and they therefore serve the King and their chain of command, first and foremost. Any noble could not order these men to do anything that would violate those duties."
Argent will smile and chuckle at Sir Validar’s response. “I had no intention of interrupting the duties of these men, Sir Validar. My sole point to Lyonessa was that we’re not subservient to them was all. And given the situation, I would much rather prefer that they continue to guard this installation.”
Chareos wrote:"There is a lot more to a person than appearances," he states with a hint of jealousy. Walking past them, he adds, "A shame most people do not learn such things." Setting down the crate and gathering up another, he silently questioned himself why he liked his fellow mage but quickly dismissed it. Perhaps there is more to her than meets the eye, he reminded himself.
“What his problem?” Argent wonders aloud to her companions in confusion.

The next scouting mission is close to impossible given the winds. With the blowing snow visibility is difficult to come by. It turns out to be nothing more than an exercise in futility.

“It’ll take forever to get my hair straightened out,” Argent complains once back inside the fortress. “Nothing living is moving out there today.”
Chareos wrote:Touching back down on the Fort's walls Chareos lets his frustration get the better of him. "Damn this infernal weather! With this wind it is nearly impossible to fly. We would be hard pressed to see anything let alone an army. It is a shame we could scry our foes, with a crystal ball."
“That would not be possible,” Argent explains. “Success with a Crystal Ball depends on the mages knowledge of what they are trying to see. You can’t just try to find the ‘orc army to our north’, or the ‘mystery foe that attacked part of the party’. You have to be very specific. I could find anyone in our group with a Crystal Ball as I know them. The less you know about the target, the greater the chance of error. Furthermore, the crystal only shows the target you are looking for. The view is always from overhead and off to one side. You can't enlarge it to see more or change your point of view.”

Later on that day an alarm sounds. It seems we have visitors!
Sir Corley wrote:Turning to those present, “It is my belief that what we are witnessing is the orc army we were expecting. Except they’ve fallen into the Cold One’s clutches and now serve her as some kind of frozen zombies! No living creature could survive being trampled like those at the bottom of those living ladders are. No, they must no longer fear death as we do.”
“Perhaps Chareos was right then. The orcs were right moving underneath the snow. Small wonder we never saw them.”
Sir Corley wrote:“Archers fire only when you have a clear target. Spellcasters continue to stand ready. This might be the beginning of a long siege. We’re only going to use enough force as necessary to hold our position until we know the scope of what we face. I will not waste resources unnecessarily.”
“If these are undead we are dealing with, Sir Corley, then someone has to be giving them instructions. They might even be watching what transpires here at the fortress. Also if this is a siege, then at some point we spellcasters are going to have to rest. I think it would be better to allow at least one of us to cast their spells and rest, while the others stand ready. Have a fresh spellcaster available at all times. For one of us to rest without casting those spells that we can would be a waste of a resource.”

Ivy:

Ivy watches wide-eyed, as the Shield of Justice seems to merge with Sir Acerion’s armor, changing it in the process.

“Remarkable!” Ivy exclaims. “But this revelation does change things. Assuming that the Shield of Life is similar in function, then it could also be concealed in this manner. That will make finding it even more difficult.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion looks deeply into Ivy's eyes, seeking to re-assure her. "I shall," the paladin tells her, "there is very little in all the planes that could keep me from your side for long."
“I will pray that it does not come to that!”
Sir Corley wrote:Once Lady Ivy arrives, Corley will say to her, “Lady Ivy, we have need of your skills. I fear that those attacking us are actually undead. It is my understanding that you can sense the presence of such beings. What I need for you to do is confirm that we face undead. I’ve allowed one of the ladders to near the parapets. Once they are close enough try to get a reading on them.”
“Of course, Sir Corley. I would be happy to.”

Moving to the area Sir Corley indicates, Ivy will use her innate ability to sense undead. If they are not in range, Ivy will wait until they come closer. If she does detect undead, Ivy will immediately try to turn them and will loudly announce that they are undead.

Acerion:

After the chamber holding the Shield has been accessed, Sir Acerion goes up to examine the Shield. As he touches it he feels the power of Heironeous smoldering within it. The Shield of Justice is easily picked up; in spite of its large size it feels feather-light to Acerion’s touch. Acerion’s axe glows golden as if in approval.

"A bit large, but definitely not overweight," Acerion marvels, "although I doubt I could use it for much except to hide behind it."

As Acerion holds the Shield of Justice before him, something strange happens. The Holy Artifact leaps out of his hands and slams hard into the Knight’s Chest! There’s a puff of dust and the Shield has completely vanished!

Acerion feels his breath escape him as he was anticipating being knocked to the floor. However, looking around wild-eyed, it appears to have vanished. That is, until he looks at his armor. "Most ingenious," Acerion finally says, with something of a smile.

"I understand," Acerion replies softly, although apparently to no one in particular. He did seem to be concentrating, as if he was hearing something very soft or faint, for a moment.

"It seems you have been chosen as a worthy individual to represent your patron. But I must ask, do you know if this is a permanent situation or can the Shield be reclaimed again?"

"It is permanent until it is time for the artifact to be assembled," Acerion replies to Validar's question. "I feel... an increase in my own abilites, almost as if Heironeous himself is at my elbow, allowing me to see things as he might."

Yusef nods in agreement. "Your patron looks on you with favor, Lord Acerion."

"Indeed it would seem that way," Acerion replies, still adjusting to all the benefits that have been bestowed upon him.

"Acerion! I just heard the tale! This is quite an honor." Grondar examines the new look of Acerion's armor. "This suits you well, my friend. I can think of no one better qualified to carry the Shield of Justice until such time as it is needed."

"Thank you Grondar," Acerion replies. "Yes it is truly an honor for me to be allowed to protect such a holy artifact as this."

“I am sure that you’ve done all that you could to restore the Shrine to its proper glory. Rest assured, Brother, that we will complete the task you have started.”

"Of that, I have no worry," Acerion replies confidently to the priests. He will make sure they have no need for anything further at this point before leaving them.

The winds make Flying difficult. The mages have almost no control during the higher gusts, but are able to ride it out for about half an hour. Visibility is low down in the valley. Sir Acerion fares better on his pegasus, but the ride is a rough one. Nothing is seen moving outside the fortress.

Acerion finds it difficult to concentrate on scouting or keeping an eye on the mages when he has to contend with making sure he isn't blown off his pegasus! He is confident his steed will carry him safely, but with so little practice riding a flying mount, it still weighs heavily on him. Still, nothing is found and that eleviates some worry from the paladin's mind.

That includes, the King himself, Dame Sharl, Sir Alon, Lord Vandevic, Lord Vorloi, Lord Torenscu, Lord Antonic, Lady Penhaligon, Lady Salavarian, and Lady Allonica.

Acerion will greet the others upon entering. Like Validar, he too can not pass up the opportunity for a good meal. He takes his seat and listens to the vast amount of news. Soon time comes for Validar and him to tell share their success.

"The haunting of the fort turned out to be something entirely different," Acerion begins. "It would seem the last of those stalward defenders to fall while defending the fort did not move on. Since they knew they guarded the valuable Shield of Justice, it is my belief they held such conviction to that duty that they refused to move on, giving up eternal peace for a time to ensure the Shield's safekeeping."

"Upon our arrival and investigation, there were a number of clues we uncovered," Acerion continues. "However, the puzzle's solution remained elusive. Eventually I asked for, and was granted, a vision by Heironeous himself, which allowed me to see the hidden solution."

"Once we could reach the Shield, I approached and attempted its weight, of which for myself was negligible," Acerion reveals. "Within a brief moment it vanished, merging itself with this very armor I now wear. I know it can be retrieved when the time to complete the artifact is at hand."

"You may count me in your list of volunteers as well, my King," Acerion replies after hearing news of the Hextorites. "This sacrifice can not be allowed to succeed."

Sherra:

Sherra is busy working on getting more rope replaced and the stone blocks ready to be moved into position when she hears the commotion. Glancing at Yusef and anyone else nearby, Sherra heads out to where she sees Corley getting briefed on what is occuring.
"That sounds quite unpleasant," Sherra replies, keeping her voice low as to not interrupt Corley. Quickly, she goes and retrieves her bow and makes her way to an area that will be suitable for a wide range of fire. She'll probably find herself among some of the Elves.
“Archers fire only when you have a clear target. Spellcasters continue to stand ready. This might be the beginning of a long siege. We’re only going to use enough force as necessary to hold our position until we know the scope of what we face. I will not waste resources unnecessarily.”
Sherra prepares her bow, anxiously awaiting to see what Ivy determines. If the enemy refuses to be turned like undead would, she will fire once a clear target presents itself.

Lyonessa:

"There is a lot more to a person than appearances," he states with a hint of jealousy.

"Not entirely sure," Lyonessa admits, feeling bad that Chareos appears hurt about something.

She will seek him out a little later. "Are you okay, Chareos?" Lyonessa asks. "Is there something you would like to talk about?" She doesn't want to pry, but her voice reflects her genuine concern.

Lyonessa will prove to be quite popular and her efforts to entertain are well met. So much so that small crowds will gather about the bardess just to be close to her.

so much attention Lyonessa thinks to herself, this must be what father experienced each time he arrived in a different town Lyonessa will greet each of those who come to see her, learning their names and where they are from. She will do her best to play popular ballads from the various towns and cities throughout the kingdom so they all get a small taste of home.

Arriving a little later than most, Lyonessa listens close to what Sir Corley says. She remembers her dealings with the cold and foul creatures within not so long ago, and this seems too familar. Lyonessa will begin singing, a stirring song to raise morale among those on the wall who will have to face the zombies first should spells and arrows fail to halt their icy advance.

Chareos
“Well kitchen work isn’t the most glamorous of tasks, but I do so enjoy a good meal, thus making it something of a necessary evil. But it can be fun at times. With the proper assistance of course.”
“Perhaps that is true, Though the end result is what matters. I always enjoyed the various dishes of our lands but I never indulged my curiosity to learn how to make such dishes.” He smiles then laughs, “Besides I hear some women like a guy who can cook.”

As Chareos is stacking the last of the crates, Lyonessa comes looking for him.
She will seek him out a little later. "Are you okay, Chareos?" Lyonessa asks.
Wiping a little sweat from his brow, he smiles at the songstress. “Aye, I am. Little bit of work never hurt anyone,” he says, missing her true intentions.
"Is there something you would like to talk about?" She doesn't want to pry, but her voice reflects her genuine concern.
“Ah that,” as he soon remembers his comments. “It’s nothing, Lyonessa. It’s just that women confuse me so. They speak of looks as though it is the only thing that matters,” he chuckles. “Though, they find themselves wondering what happened when the immediate attraction dwindles and their sight has failed them.”

“I guess I do not understand how a women like Argent, who is intelligent and beautiful can be so… so shallow that they cannot see it is not the only thing that men have to offer. In many ways I wonder why she isn’t more like you.” Shaking his head in disbelief as he saying this to her. “You are also beautiful, intelligent and skilled in song, but you look beyond that of your peers and see the whole person. Not just an empty shell that fades over time.”
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Sir Validar -

"I am not sure that you could honestly take it that far," Sir Validar responds.

"Indeed," he says cooly. "Then perhaps you should be more careful with your words. You did say that as a noble these men should be serving you. As I pointed out, that is simply not true."

Validar takes her last words and files them away. Certainly the armies of Auril are often lifeless. As has been said before, at least the main threat of the humanoids seems to be thwarted with this infernal weather.

Touching back down on the Fort's walls Chareos lets his frustration get the better of him. "Damn this infernal weather! With this wind it is nearly impossible to fly. We would be hard pressed to see anything let alone an army. It is a shame we couldn't scrye our foes, with a crystal ball."

“That would not be possible,” Argent explains. “Success with a Crystal Ball depends on the mage's knowledge of what they are trying to see.

"That part is unfortunate. While useful in what you are looking for, scrying does indeed seem to have very limited usefulness in that case," Validar comments.
----------------------------------------------

"It seems you have been chosen as a worthy individual to represent your patron. But I must ask, do you know if this is a permanent situation or can the Shield be reclaimed again?"

"It is permanent until it is time for the artifact to be assembled," Acerion replies to Validar's question. "I feel... an increase in my own abilites, almost as if Heironeous himself is at my elbow, allowing me to see things as he might."

"Interesting," Validar responds. "An increase in your abilities is certainly something positive, in addition to the Shield remaining in relative safety."
-----------------------------------------------

At the Lords Council, Sir Acerion also volunteers to join the mission on the attack at New Keln. It will quite the honor to do battle with the heroes that have already agreed to this battle.

"Is this attack to be limited to the Lords present who consent to this attack or can we expect to have additional forces at our side? Certainly, we will need one mage at a minimum to Teleport the Stone Cube there and at least one more as a back-up would be highly recommended."

"Indeed," is all the response Grondar gives to his new friend's exclamation. Is that the hint of a smile on his craggy face?
Farian wrote:Farian raises an eyebrow toward the dwarven priest in disbelief. “Lead?” he asks incredulously, “No offense but Wayfinders don’t lead…..we scout! Besides I could move faster meself!” He adds quickly, “No telling what maybe down there, if there is anything.”
Grondar bows. "No offense intended, friend Farian. I meant to leave open the possibility that there might be a few among our newly-arrived companions with similar skills that might be of some assistance to you."
Validar wrote:"We have many concerns and tasks to complete as a part of this overall mission. The sooner we are able to make a move to reclaim Hammerfall, the quicker we will also be able to begin our assault on Ardelphia and reclaim Stone Ridge as well."
"Understood," Grondar replies with a nod. "There is much to be done and few of us to do it." It seems that the dwarven efforts to reclaim their ancestral halls and the humans' drive to reclaim their lands and cities go hand-in-hand. Progress on either front is likely to benefit the other.
Corley wrote:“I would ask you to remain here with us, noble Grondar. However, we shall not disturb your brethren just yet. No need to unleash all the forces at our command so early in a battle.”
"Very well, Sir Corley. If I may, I'd like to take a moment to collect my crossbow; it won't take long, I promise." If Corley agrees, Grondar will race down to the second level, grab his crossbow and supply of quarrels, and race back.

"That is quite some transformation. It certainly gives her a sizable army to wield in her attack on our fort. I wonder how much of the army she was able to take into her service? It would require immense power to transform it all - perhaps more than even she has access to."

Corley wrote:“Hold your position for now, Yusef. If what I suspect is true, then your priestly might will be needed.”
"As you wish, Sir Corley," Yusef replies with a bow. He takes a seat on the floor with his back to a wall, his legs folded in front of him. He will wait here until he is called upon.

This is a disturbing revelation. The goddess Auril apparently has the ability to turn others into servants for her own foul purposes. From what he knows of the Cold One, Yusef is determined to stand against her for as long as he is able.

At such time as Sir Corley seems to have a moment, Yusef will speak up. "Sir Corley? I thought you might want to know about these bottles I carry. Each is enchanted in such a way that, when broken, it will create a small fiery explosion. They can be thrown by anyone. As you are probably aware, it is possible that these servants of the Cold One will be especially susceptible to fire, so they may prove to be a valuable weapon."

Aria:
Validar wrote:"Very well. While that is not the ideal situation, it is certainly one which can be overcome. I agree with your assessment that the coal supply is the primary concern. However, while we are not in direct danger of attack, I would recommend that your soldiers concentrate more on removing that blockage than engaging in guard duties or direct defense. In that way we can possibly be further along towards readying the assault on Hammerfall."
“That is agreeable.”
Validar wrote:"If you would make me a listing of what will be needed to build a bridge to span the chasm and to shore up the tunnel where needed, I will do my best to have it all brought here at the soonest opportunity."
“That may not be necessary,” Aria answers. “Much like with the coal reserves, there should be supply depots spread out evenly among the mines. A central location where supplies were stored. There should be more timbers, tracks, ore carts, and other mining tools there. Just a matter of finding them.”
Argent wrote:“I may have a possible solution in the near future,” Argent will say upon hearing this. “I am close to mastering a whole new level of magicks and among them is a spell called Wall of Stone. Once I am able to cast it, I could simply create a span to cross this chasm. Thanks to the magic of the spell, the new bridge would merge into the rock around it.”
“I’m not that fond of magic meself, sorceress, but if this spell does what claim then it would save time.”
Grondar wrote:Grondar volunteers to work with those transporting the coal to the furnace. His skills don't really fit the other roles.
“I’ll leave that task in your capable hands then.”

Aria herself will oversee operations in the mines themselves.
Farian wrote:"If we have some grappling hooks we could be makin' a rope bridge above the chasm, Least till the bridge is built."
“Or I could just throw you across,” Aria retorts with a wide grin. “Explore the chasm first and we’ll take care of crossing the gorge.”

Once Farian is down the chasm, Aria will help get ropes set up to cross the gorge to the other side. Her main goal right now is to find a supply depot.
