Sir Corley:
Time drags on after Sir Validar and Sir Acerion depart with Lord Sharadin. Corley will remain alert during this time, but will trust the men on duty to perform the tasks required of them.
But finally something is spotted out in the storm! An alert is sounded and Sir Corley is summoned. There is movement at the base of the fortress! What the elves describe as “ice-blue orcs” are climbing on top of each other, forming living ladders to reach the parapets of the fortress! These orcs are utterly silent and are unaffected by the cold.
“What has happened?” Sir Corley asks as he arrives on the scene. The situation is explained and he takes a look for himself. Indeed, ice-blue orcs are climbing over each other trying to reach the parapets!
“Those on the bottom must be getting crushed to death! Unless that is no longer a concern...”
An idea crosses Sir Corley’s mind as many of the Guardians arrive on the scene. A decision is quickly reached.
Grondar wrote:When he hears word of the attack, Grondar will race off to consult with Corley to see if he and the dwarven warriors should assist in the fort's defense.
“I would ask you to remain here with us, noble Grondar. However, we shall not disturb your brethren just yet. No need to unleash all the forces at our command so early in a battle.”
Yusef wrote:As they are working, suddenly the alarm is sounded. An attack! Yusef races off to collect the enchanted bottles he made, then reports to Lord Corley for assignment.
“Hold your position for now, Yusef. If what I suspect is true, then your priestly might will be needed.”
Chareos wrote:Hearing the call throughout the fort for Sir Corley, Chareos gathers up his staff and sword and follows after him. Hearing the elves description of ice blue orcs, Chareos begins to wonder just what these creatures are.
“Welcome, Lord Chareos. Stay in reserve for now. It would be unwise to expend all our resources so early in a siege.”
Turning to the elf commander, Sir Corley will say. “Let's bring these living ladders back down to the ground. Have your archers target the ‘rungs’ of these ladders. But allow one to nearly reach the parapets.”
To Lt. Wyndham, Corley adds, “Have a few of your men take some of the oil barrels and be prepared to pour them out where boiling oil used to be poured. At my command pour the oil. Once poured and it has run out of the fortress, we can ignite it with a torch from the inside.”
Turning to those present, “It is my belief that what we are witnessing is the orc army we were expecting. Except they’ve fallen into the Cold One’s clutches and now serve her as some kind of frozen zombies! No living creature could survive being trampled like those at the bottom of those living ladders are. No, they must no longer fear death as we do.”
Once Lady Ivy arrives, Corley will say to her, “Lady Ivy, we have need of your skills. I fear that those attacking us are actually undead. It is my understanding that you can sense the presence of such beings. What I need for you to do is confirm that we face undead. I’ve allowed one of the ladders to near the parapets. Once they are close enough try to get a reading on them.”
Assuming that Lady Ivy does find the enemy to be undead, Sir Corley will issue a series of commands. “Ballista men, back away from your stations. Priests take up those positions and be prepared to Turn the enemy as they approach.”
“Let loose with the Continual Light rocks. Let’s fully illuminate the battlefield. Start near the base of the fortress and work your way out.”
“Lieutenant Wyndham, have your men begin to pour the oil. Ignite it as soon as they are ready and clear!”
“Archers fire only when you have a clear target. Spellcasters continue to stand ready. This might be the beginning of a long siege. We’re only going to use enough force as necessary to hold our position until we know the scope of what we face. I will not waste resources unnecessarily.”
