New Frontiers #73

The Shield of Justice has been recovered from the Shrine of Heironeous in Fort Fletcher. The scouts have returned from their exploring, but have not found anything. Preparations for the arrival of more troops continue.

In the dwarven mines, Aria, Grondar, and Farian have discovered that Rat has squirmed past the cave in. Working quickly, but patiently, the path is enlarged enough for Farian to follow. Grondar and Aria follow shortly after that.

The cause for the cave in quickly becomes apparent. The past earthquakes damaged the support timbers in this area and the ceiling came down soon after. A large hole remains in the ceiling where the debris originally came from. No exit from that hole can be seen.

Crawling onwards you reach the far end of the debris pile and it slopes down to the mine floor. The tunnel continues onward from there.

Farian quickly follows Rat’s trail as best he can. The passage continues onward in the same general direction for another 200 yards. At that point, there are more signs of cave-in damage. The tunnel has been split in half at this point. A 15’ wide chasm has opened up between this side of the tunnel and the far side. The cart tracks end at the chasm, suggesting that they fell deeper into the earth at that point. The mine on the other side of the chasm can be clearly seen and it seems safe. That tunnel continues onward.

Several side passages are discovered off the main one. However, the cart tracks do not go down any of these tributaries. These side passages vary in length with the longest being 350 yards long and the smallest only 40 feet. They were mine shafts that were dug out in the past and abandoned once their ore was played out. They all terminate at dead ends.

With it being late in the day, the dwarves and Rat return to the Fortress.

The rest of the day and the night passes without incident. Morning eventually comes and the pre-designated time for Lord Sharadin to arrive nears. Sir Validar, Sir Acerion, and Ivy are on hand.

Finally, Lord Sharadin teleports in bearing the Stone House.

“Good to see you all,” Lord Sharadin states. “I trust you’re ready to receive reinforcements?”

Lord Sharadin is brought up to date on what has transpired over the last three days as you move deeper into the fortress. He plans to open up the Stone House and unload its contents on the second level of the fortress, as it will put the people and the supplies closer to where you’ll need them.

“You’ve done very well,” Sharadin says as he sets the Stone House down. “Here’s the support that you’ll need to hold this Fortress.”

The door is opened and armored men bearing supplies begins to issue forth. Lord Sharadin will introduce a few of them.

“There are 100 regular soldiers,” Sharadin explains. “Their commander is Lieutenant Wyndham here. He’s aided by Sergeants Paxton and Haines.”

“There are 25 elfin archers led by Derek Eaglesight.”

“Twenty dwarves led by Baluk Ironforge.”

“And 16 ballista men from Pyris led by Sergeant Irwin.”

“We also managed to appropriate several priests to take charge of the Shrines here. Representing Heironeous, we have Rexford, Eaton, and Radly. For Helm, we have Fenwick and Mal.”

The unloading of the Stone House will take over an hour. As you wait, Lord Sharadin will speak further with Sir Acerion and Sir Validar.

“Much has happened in the kingdom since you left Corunglain. The King is gathering his council for a meeting this day. Since the situation here seems stable for the moment, both of you will be leaving with me. I have heard that the situation in Elcadan has taken an unexpected turn and that our scouts have located the missing Duke of Corunglain. I would expect that among the topics discussed would be a mission to rescue him. Regardless, our presence is required this afternoon in Corunglain.”

GM Notes:

None of the new arrivals are more than what they seem. Many mundane supplies are brought in and stacked through the second level of the fortress. More food, weapons, armor, ammunition, and personal items such as blankets arrive. Lots going on and much to discuss.

Now what?

Lord Sharadin's arrival...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

The day comes to an end and the Guardians have completed a few more tasks. The haunting of Fort Fletcher has been resolved and the Guardian Shield section dedicated to Heironeous has been recovered.

(Is the wall closeable or is it open for good now?)

The dwarves return with some coal, enough to last a day and now even longer due to the effects of Lyonessa and Yusef. Validar visits the ramparts of the Fortress late at night. He contemplates the situation as he scans the night sky.

So far, at least here, all is going well. The reinforcements are due to arrive tomorrow. The enemy is not to be found, so they do not seem to be immediately menaced. This area of the Kingdom is on its way to being reclaimed, strengthened and fortified. That in itself will create more intrigue with internal politics and perhaps draw more attention from the enemies behind their current foes.

The new King will be a boon to Cynalon. Validar's biggest concern that the Inner Lands will continue to control the King and his advisors seem to be allayed based on the members of the King's Council. Sir Acerion and himself are even members, which gives Validar some say in the direction that the Kingdom will head. Validar had expected to need to do much more political wrangling and complete other plans to reach this point. Certainly the situation has both new advantages as well as new disadvantages. He, as always, is concerned about the situation with Elcadan and her allies. Validar hopes a civil war does not ensue due to Duke Maurice's response. It is not likely that he will take the situation with the new King as well as some. The Duke will have too much to lose, as will the Merchant Guilds.

Those thoughts lead him to the vision of loveliness known as Lady Gabriella Allonica. He hopes that she is safe and wonders if she has left Corunglain for Pyris yet. Eventually, Sir Validar finishes his musings and heads to his chamber for sleep.

The next morning, Validar is up early and checks on the horses before breakfast. He will give Havok a bit of exercise, although there is not a lot of open space to do so. Validar then dons his armor and checks with the guards to make sure there were no surprises or unusual occurances throughout the night. Fortunately, there have been no incidents. "Can it be possible that the threats have truly been abated?", he thinks to himself. "Not likely. We must always be on alert here in these lands."

Validar meets with Sir Acerion and the Lady Ivy of Azrella a bit before Lord Sharadin and the reinforcements arrive. "Thank you for making yourselves available. There is little risk of infiltrating our forces, but I want to be certain. For the smallest about of effort, we can be satisfied that all the new men are who they claim to be and that their loyalties are true."

Finally, Lord Sharadin teleports in bearing the Stone House.

“Good to see you all,” Lord Sharadin states. “I trust you’re ready to receive reinforcements?”

"Thank you, Lord Sharadin. It is quite good to see you as well. We are indeed ready to receive the reinforcements for Fort Fletcher."

Lord Sharadin is brought up to date on what has transpired over the last three days as you move deeper into the fortress. He plans to open up the Stone House and unload its contents on the second level of the fortress, as it will put the people and the supplies closer to where you’ll need them.

"We have recovered the Shield of Justice from its hidden place and the haunting of this Fortress has been ended. We have been debating whether it is better to have the Shield returned to Corunglain or not. It may be less dangerous to have the parts separate until all four are recovered."

"As for the enemy, we have not located them, except for a small advance guard..." Validar trails off as he speaks, a thought coming to him. His brow furrows for a moment as he searches his memory. "I am concerned that there is a possibility that the humanoid forces have already bypassed this location. We have not been able to locate them on the Broken Lands side of the Fortress."

"The King indicated that they were within a week of the Fortress and we left within 3 days. While I do not feel it likely that we were too late to stop the humanoids, it may be prudent to have someone scout the lands on this side of the Fortress."

“You’ve done very well,” Sharadin says as he sets the Stone House down. “Here’s the support that you’ll need to hold this Fortress.”

The door is opened and armored men bearing supplies begins to issue forth. Lord Sharadin will introduce a few of them.

Sir Acerion and Ivy move into place to Detect Evil as the reinforcements exit. Validar will greet each of the lieutenants and sergeants as they are introduced, as well as the priests which have come with them. Validar will tell each that they will gather all the men in the open area on level 2 once all the supplies are removed from the Stone Cube.

“And 16 ballista men from Pyris led by Sergeant Irwin.”

"Greetings, Sergeant Irwin. We will be needing to make repairs to the ballista here, but several are close to operational. I want your men to get them running as soon as possible. I am certain that you and your men will distinguish yourselves in the defense of this Fortress."

Validar listens to Shardin's information, many questions forming as he speaks. "Very well. I will inform the rest of the Guardians that Sir Corley is in charge until we return. Our situation is stable, but it is not without threats. We are concerned that there is the possibility that the Cold Maiden is marshalling her forces in this area. Whether they would be a direct threat to this location is obviously not yet known. We would request some additional priest assistance from one of the dieties that is in opposition to her. I think the danger is enough of a threat to warrant such precautions."

"It is good to hear that the Duke of Corunglain has been located, but what is this situation in Elcadan? I have had my concerns about them since the new King has taken the throne. In truth, before then as well. Did the King and Lady Allonica return safely from the meeting with the Duke?"

Once the troops have finished with the unloading of the Cube, Sir Validar will address the men, who have been assembled. "Greetings and well met to each of you. I am Sir Validar Vanarkus, son of the Baron of Pyris and leader of the Guardians of Light."

"This is a dangerous post and I am sure that each of you are well-skilled in order to meet the task before us. The King has charged us with defending Fort Fletcher against one of three invasion prongs of the humanoid army. One of them was already beaten back at the city of Corunglain. Another is being opposed by the forces of Dame Sharl and Sir Alon and we are certain that Cynalon will be victorious there."

"That leaves the last of the enemy forces to be opposed here. The fortress is strong. We have the assistance of our dwarven allies, as well as our elven allies. Together, we will not only hold this fortress, but take back all of the holdings that have been lost due to the humanoid invasions. From here we will drive any remaining roving bands from Cynalon lands, we will take back Ardelphia and reclaim the Barony of Stone Ridge, as well as all the dwarven holdings lost in this area."

"Each of you will play a part in that defense. There will be stories told of the men who stood fast against the humanoid invasion and triumphed. There will be songs sung in several languages that proclaim the deeds done by each of you in this mission. There is much glory here to be had by all of us. Distinguish yourselves well. If we are able we will strive to defeat the enemy before they arrive at our gates. If not, we will defend these walls with our lives, for we defend not only Corunglain, but the entire Kingdom of Cynalon as well as the lands of our allies. We will be victorious. Once the winter snows have settled into the pass, and they have already begun, we will be safe from direct attack by the humanoids, as the pass will no longer be passable."

"Sir Corley here will coordinate the quartering of the troops and work with the lieutenants and sergeants to set up guard shifts and duties. We have much to do in the way of repairs to this fortress in addition to simply defending it. If no one has any questions, then you are all dismissed."

Validar will observe the troops getting themselves established and then spend some of the rest of the time speaking with Lord Sharadin on the matters of the Kingdom.

Acerion:

Validar looks at the large stone shield. "Unless there is some magic that would not only lighten but also reduce the size of this shield I think it would be impossible to wield in any way. Whether it has any other abilities or enchantments is unknown at the moment. At least we were not provided with that information. Sir Acerion, do you have any other information to share about this artifact?"

Considering things for a moment, Acerion replies, "I was going to say that it would be doubtful each shield would have its own properties since it requires all four to activate its true purpose. However, aren't there stories of other artifacts that have multiple pieces, each with some power of their own and yet can be put together to make an even more powerful one?" (ooc note: not sure which artifacts, if any, exist in this world, so Acerion's question could be more refering to planar stories he heard rather than anything world specific)

"There would be no way to know except to try," Acerion suggests, and unless told not to, he will move to the Shield and see if it can be picked up by himself. The paladin will not risk injury to himself or the artifact, and if a power word is needed, he can try using the name of the Shield itself or invoking the name of Heironeous. Otherwise he will just leave it be.

"Of course, I shall be there," Acerion replies. It is a wise move, for although Acerion believes infiltration would be nearly impossible, there is no reason to take chances at this point.

“We also managed to appropriate several priests to take charge of the Shrines here. Representing Heironeous, we have Rexford, Eaton, and Radly. For Helm, we have Fenwick and Mal.”

"Greetings to you, brothers," Acerion says as he greets the incoming priests of Heironeous, "and to you, faithful priests of Helm." He will offer to take both groups to their respective shrines, taking the time to speak with them of what transpired with the apparitions and their hard-earned release. He will add to the priests of Heironeous, "I have labored to return the shrine to its former glory. I fear there is still much to do, but I hope I have eased the task for you a bit."

After speaking with the priests, Acerion returns to join Lord Sharadin and Validar, only to learn of important news and a change of plans.

"Of course, Lord Sharadin. I will be ready to depart when you are," Acerion answers while keeping the news of this sudden departure hidden from view. Indeed he was looking forward to further scouting missions and to help the priests with their duties, but it seems the kingdom has other needs for him.

As time permits, Acerion will seek out Ivy, who no doubt is becoming quite busy herself with all the additional people arriving and helping out where she can. Catching her in a corridor, he smiles as he approaches, not looking forward to leaving her for even a short while. "Lord Sharadin brings news that Sir Validar and I are to return with him. We are to meet with the King once more as he has summoned his council this day."

He will take a moment to draw Ivy into his arms, enjoying the closeness of her. "I do not know how long I shall be gone, my lady," Acerion admits. "There should be ample forces here now to ensure everyone's relative safety. Still I will be concerned for you."

Acerion kisses Ivy's lips passionately, knowing it may be quite some time indeed before he sees her again. Unlike the scouting missions, this turn of events could put some distance between them for a long while.

"Farewell, my love. I shall return to you at the soonest opportunity," Acerion says. Turning to leave, he heads back to Lord Sharadin and Validar once more to learn what he can of what has transpired.

Lyonessa:

Having heard that reinforcements have arrived, Lyonessa stays out of the way. Seeing all these troops and a few priests, she waits expectantly for the support staff. There are a few things that she is sure herself and the others who have helped in the kitchen need to let the new arrivals know about. However, it seems none show.

Confused, Lyonessa asks Ivy and Argent, "I hope they don't mean for us to be cooking and cleaning for 200 men." Envisioning endless days of toiling over stoves and wash basins is not something she is endeared to.

Finding Validar, she asks him for a moment of his time, "Excuse me, Sir Validar, but where are the support staff? I'm not wise to military matters, but doesn't every castle, fort and tower have support? I am sure that some of these fine soldiers can help with menial tasks, but if combat were to break out, I do not imagine we can pull ten needed soldiers from the wall to cook a meal for the hundred or so others."

Regardless of whatever Validar can offer, Lyonessa will help coordinate storage of supplies and give thought to the coming meal. If she gets some volunteers or word of future arriving support staff, that will lighten her mood. Still, these troops are not to blame, so she will plan on entertaining them with songs and smiles during their meals and off-duty time.

The support staff-- kitchen workers and whatnot-- are all part of the 100 man force. None of the group is expected to cook. :D

Farian

Going down the rat hole Farian comes to the bottom of the cave-in and squats down looking about his surroundings. The air is old and dank as it rushes into his lungs. Looking in the dirt and rubble he sees a footprint here and there. Soon he gets up to follow them.

As he does he notes some of the beams cracked and broken among the debris. Figuring it best to move as far forward as he can then work his way back he steps forward soon spotting several off-shoots of tunnels not far after a large chasm lies in the way to their beloved city.

Not knowing what creatures may have made this place their home over the years he makes no sound and turns back to the outer tunnels. He soon finds Rat’s footprints yet again and follows suit down one of the side tunnels.

Upon seeing Rat, Farian moves quietly forward not to be heard by the halfling, when within reach he taps the Halfling on his shoulder giving him a scowl.

“What ya be thinking? You dunno what beasts maybe makin' a home in these here holes, wanting to make a quick meal of a rat.”

On the way back Farian looks hopefully at Aria, Grondar and Rat, “Least the mines be able to be repaired, to allow our passing. Though that hole will be bothersome,” refering to the chasim.

Upon seeing the dwarves unit Farian will spit on his hands and clean them off on his pants as best he can. “Hail and well met. It's good to be seeing more of our own kin again. Farian Silverpike da Wayfinder at your service.”

(ooc note: not sure which artifacts, if any, exist in this world, so Acerion's question could be more refering to planar stories he heard rather than anything world specific)

"There are indeed stories of artifacts which have separate parts that each have their own powers and make up a more powerful unit. I remember stories that my first teacher Lars told about an artifact known as the Rod of Seven Parts. Each had its own powers and they combined to create a powerful artifact. Granted this may just be a fable."

Validar watcehs closely as Sir Acerion moves over to inspect the Shield of Justice. As a paladin of Heironeous, Acerion is the most likley of them to be able to utilize it, if it is in fact able to be used in any other manner. If not, Validar is ready to assist him. It would not do to break the shield now that they've recovered it!

Validar meets with Sir Acerion and the Lady Ivy of Azrella a bit before Lord Sharadin and the reinforcements arrive.

"Of course, I shall be there," Acerion replies. It is a wise move, for although Acerion believes infiltration would be nearly impossible, there is no reason to take chances at this point.

"Very good. No reason not to be certain, I believe," Validar says.

Validar listens to Lyonessa's concerns and he also hears her unspoken concerns. Clearly she has not had much experience with an army in the field, not that he would expect many of the Guardians to do so.

"Ah, milady, a fine question and one with quite an easy answer, I am afraid. Simply put, at this moment there is no support staff." Seeing her face as she hears these words, he quickly adds. "But the men will be able to take care of themselves. Basically, we would be considered a field army, even though we are based here in Fort Fletcher. Each of the units is large enough to be broken into three detachments, in order to have one active at all times, one doing repairs or cleaning etc and one resting. Each of the units would have a mess cook available from each shift and they would need the minimal help from some of their squadmates. For this size of army, it shouldn't take more than two or three men to handle the food tasks."

"And should a battle break out, then everyone becomes active for the defense of the fortress. In the case of a protracted battle, we would make due with field rations anyway and save the actual cooking for a point when the combat has completely ended."

"Once the threat of invasion has ended, then likely there will be more 'support staff' brought in to care for the men: armorers, blacksmiths, fletchers, carpenters, cooks, etc. But first we have to secure not only this location, but also make the surrounding area safe for any civilians to live here. Although to be honest, a military base at this location, that being right on the border to the broken lands, will never have much of a civilian contingent until we can lessen the threat of attack much more than ever before."

"In the meantime, anything we can do for the men will certainly be appreciated, but nothing is required. The hope is for this location to become self-operating before long."

Sir Validar wrote:"That is a bit disappointing to hear," Validar responds. "I had hoped we would at least locate them. But what happened to Argent's flight ability? Did you not each take two of the power?"
“I must have missed that. I’ll have two of them in the morning.”
Chareos wrote:His cheeks begin to turn crimson as he feels Argent kiss him, “It was my pleasure, my Lady. As she begins to walk away he calls out after her. “Would you care for some help?”
“We’ll take all the help we can get in the kitchen, Chareos. Have you been holding back on us?” From Argent’s grin, you can tell that she is just teasing.

Next morning Lord Sharadin returns with many troops. Argent watches them disembark from the Stone Cube along with Ivy and Lyonessa. “Some fine strapping young lads in the military these days,” Argents says in a dreamy tone.
Argent wrote:Confused, Lyonessa asks Ivy and Argent, "I hope they don't mean for us to be cooking and cleaning for 200 men." Envisioning endless days of toiling over stoves and washbasins is not something she is endeared to.
“Of course not,” Argent answers easily. “Thanks to our new king, we’re all Ladies of the Realm. We’re nobles, and being commoners, these men should serve us. Which isn’t all that unappealing judging by these lads. But alas, I am sure that none of them has the culinary training that we do. It might be best if we continue to make our own meals for the time being.”

Corley:

Sir Corley will make a point to be around when Lord Sharadin arrives with the troops. The young noble is surprised to hear that Sir Validar and Sir Acerion will be leaving with Lord Sharadin. Hopefully this will just be for a few hours.
Sir Validar wrote:"Sir Corley here will coordinate the quartering of the troops and work with the lieutenants and sergeants to set up guard shifts and duties. We have much to do in the way of repairs to this fortress in addition to simply defending it. If no one has any questions, then you are all dismissed."
“Welcome to Fort Fletcher,” Sir Corley will say addressing the men. “As Sir Validar indicated there is much to do. I’m assuming that your individual commanders have already set up your duty rosters into three groups. Those on duty now should go to your guard posts. The rest of you men will need to get your gear stowed and those quarters not already prepared readied. We’ll need to set up ammunition reserves in the key areas where ranged weapons are ideal to use.”

Sir Corley is assuming that the dwarven unit will function under Lady Aria’s command. He’d like some of the elves to be in the look out spots, as elves are known for their superior eyesight.

“There has been no sign of the enemy thus far, but we have no reason to be lax.”

Corley will spend the rest of the day getting the units into position and seeing that each understands their assignments. Once that is done, he’ll wander the keep fielding questions and seeing that the necessary work is done.

We will want to collect all four Shields that make up the Guardian Shield together, but for now, I see no reason to bring them to the same location until we are ready to put them to use. It may just be a cause for some enemy to try and steal them again."
“I’m honestly not sure what would be better,” Ivy admits. “I am concerned about just leaving it out in the open for all to see. I just feel that it could be in a safer place.”
Sir Validar wrote:"We were told that the Shield of Magic is close to recovery. I take that to mean that it could be located in the Towers of Gaz that our friend Kharyna and her crew is exploring, although that is speculation. However, that would leave but one more Shield to recover; that of your faith, Ivy. The Shield of Life. Have you ever heard of such an artifact before? Do you know where it could be or what may have happened to it?"
“No, I have not heard of it before. Admittedly, I was more concerned with weapons against undead while being trained. It was my fondest desire to gain possession of a Mace of Disruption, the most common weapon of my faith. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine holding something as holy and powerful as the Kiss of Azrella.”

“Were the shields to be useable items apart from their combined purposes, I would have to surmise that they would reflect the tenants of our various faiths.”
Sir Validar wrote:Validar will ask all of the priests here which of the faiths holds the most sway over the weather. He has heard of someone named Silvanus, but is not certain if another deity would be more appropriate. Also whether there is a direct opponent to Auril? We may be able to request a priest of the proper deity to assist us when Lord Sharadin arrives.
“Our gods are divided up into a loose hierarchy based on their goals and aims. Silvanus is better known as Mother Nature. Her domain covers nature and all its glories. The Cold One is a lesser of Silvanus, as cold is only one aspect of the world. Azrella herself falls under Mother Nature’s domain, but the Blue Lady has a much higher standing that the Cold One. I would say that Lathander would be a logical foe of the Cold One. He stands for the coming of Spring, the Dawn, and Renewal. It is typically Lathander who breaks the Cold One’s spell and brings winter to an end.”
Sir Acerion wrote:As time permits, Acerion will seek out Ivy, who no doubt is becoming quite busy herself with all the additional people arriving and helping out where she can. We are to meet with the King once more as he has summoned his council this day."
Ivy is busy helping the put the new supplies away with Olivia in the infirmary when Sir Acerion appears before her. It seems that he has been summoned away by the king once more. Ivy can’t help but wonder if this is the way that it will always be?
Sir Acerion wrote:He will take a moment to draw Ivy into his arms, enjoying the closeness of her. "I do not know how long I shall be gone, my lady," Acerion admits. "There should be ample forces here now to ensure everyone's relative safety. Still I will be concerned for you."
Ivy savor being held closely for as long as she can. “You must do what you must. I am sure that we will be fine waiting for your return.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion kisses Ivy's lips passionately, knowing it may be quite some time indeed before he sees her again. Unlike the scouting missions, this turn of events could put some distance between them for a long while.

"Farewell, my love. I shall return to you at the soonest opportunity," Acerion says. Turning to leave, he heads back to Lord Sharadin and Validar once more to learn what he can of what has transpired.
“I know you will. Return to me in one piece.”
Lyonessa wrote:Confused, Lyonessa asks Ivy and Argent, "I hope they don't mean for us to be cooking and cleaning for 200 men." Envisioning endless days of toiling over stoves and washbasins is not something she is endeared to.
Argent wrote:“Of course not,” Argent answers easily.
Ivy was about to answer, when Argent makes her observation. She hadn’t thought about it that way, but still has no desire to have the soldiers waiting on her. “We should do what we can,” Ivy will answer diplomatically.

Aria:

A way through the cave-in is quickly made and we continue on. Farian is up ahead in the lead trying to find our missing Rat. The tunnels past the cave-in seem sturdy enough. The supports buckled during an earth tremor and that lead to the collapse.

The main tunnel ends at a disappointing chasm. The side tunnels are just old mines that ran their course and were later abandoned.
Farian wrote:On the way back Farian looks hopefully at Aria, Grondar and Rat, “Least the mines be able to be repaired, to allow our passing. Though that hole will be bothersome,” referring to the chasm.
“Damn annoying,” Aria echoes. “That just leaves the coal in the cave as the only supply we can get at and that won’t last the winter. We’ll need to get a bridge across that gap and new tracks laid to continue supplying coal.”

Once the dwarves return to the fortress for a well-earned meal and ale, Aria will report to this to Validar.

Next day, the reinforcements arrive including the unit of dwarves.
“Twenty dwarves led by Baluk Ironforge.”
“Welcome Baluk Ironforge. I am Aria Stonehand, the head of this expedition. Let’s gather the men together and go over what we know.”

Once the dwarves are all gathered, Aria will go over what they found, thus far, down in the mines. “Among our goals are to continue to deliver coal to the Fortress and help defend it should it be attacked. We’ll need a couple of men to carry out bringing the coal here, and then a few more to transport it down to the furnaces. We’ll also need to clear out that cave-in and get the tunnel stable once more. Then we can tackle the chasm issue. Alright lads, lets get to work!”

Chareos
“We’ll take all the help we can get in the kitchen, Chareos. Have you been holding back on us?” From Argent’s grin, you can tell that she is just teasing.
“Me? I wouldn’t dream of such a thing,” saying in a mock hurt tone…..“Perhaps,” he says with quick wink of his right eye. As a grin plays about his face, he walks to catch up with Argent. Out in the hallway, he adds, “Or perhaps waiting for the right person or time to share my experiences,” while casting her a curious sideways glance.

He will make himself useful in the kitchen as best he can. Taking out his dagger he begins to cut many ingredients up. Thankfully with some of his training with Sharadin, Chareos learned to handle a dagger to cut ingredients for his master’s potions.

The next morning Chareos awaits the arrival of Sharadin with his cube, leaning heavily on his staff as if bored as the minutes pass.

Within short order the reinforcements begin to weave their way from the Stone Cube like ants. Seeing several large crates Chareos places his staff down and makes his way to help.

Carrying a fairly large crate in his arms he walks by the three women gawking over the new arrivals.
Next morning Lord Sharadin returns with many troops. Argent watches them disembark from the Stone Cube along with Ivy and Lyonessa. “Some fine strapping young lads in the military these days,” Argents says in a dreamy tone.
Rolling his eyes in their direction he then shakes his head in disbelief. Even Terri and Sherri were never this bad he thought, as he looked at the three women, especially Argent who reminded him of a salivating animal that hadn't eaten in days.

“There is a lot more to a person than appearances,” he states with a hint of jealousy. Walking past them, he adds, “A shame most people do not learn such things.” Setting down the crate and gathering up another, he silently questioned himself why he liked his fellow mage but quickly dismissed it. Perhaps there is more to her than meets the eye, he reminded himself.

Grondar:

It takes some time, but Grondar and Aria are finally able to follow Rat, followed by Farian, through the hole the other two used. Grondar lets Aria lead the way, as she would be unhappy if they encountered any foes and she was not in a position to deal with them.

The main tunnel is blocked by a crevasse. They will have to find some way to cross in order to fully explore the halls. Turning back, Grondar will look down several of the side tunnels. Eventually, they come upon Farian, who has in turn found Rat.
Farian wrote:On the way back Farian looks hopefully at Aria, Grondar and Rat, “Least the mines be able to be repaired, to allow our passing. Though that hole will be bothersome,” refering to the chasm.
"Indeed, Farian. So far, that appears to be our greatest challenge. Once our brethren arrive, we should be able to make much greater progress."
Aria wrote:“Damn annoying,” Aria echoes. “That just leaves the coal in the cave as the only supply we can get at and that won’t last the winter. We’ll need to get a bridge across that gap and new tracks laid to continue supplying coal.”
"You make a good point, Aria. Getting the flow of coal to the keep restored will need to be one of our first priorities."

They make their way back to the fort, discovering that the first wave of reinforcements has been brought by Sharadin. Most importantly, they include a small band of dwarves!

"Greetings, brothers!" Grondar says to the small group of dwarves. "Welcome to Fort Fletcher. I am Grondar Foehammer, priest of our Revered Mother. I look forward to working with all of you." He turns to Baluk. "A pleasure to meet you, Baluk Ironforge."
Aria wrote:Once the dwarves are all gathered, Aria will go over what they found thus far down in the mines. “Among our goals are to continue to deliver coal to the Fortress and help defend it should it be attacked. Grondar stands back a bit as Aria brings the new arrivals up to date on their situation. "You heard the lady; there's much to do and little time to do it in. Farian there can lead the way into the tunnels so we can get started."

As a night and day have passed since he last cast his defensive and warning spells about the fort, Grondar will renew those that need it and cast the rest as Argent directs.

Yusef:

The way to the Shield of Justice has been opened, and the spirits inhabiting the fort have departed for their well-deserved rest. Yusef looks over at Acerion. "As this is the temple of your patron, you and Ivy are most likely to know the best way to handle the shield. If you need any assistance, please let me know."

The rest of the day is spent cleaning, organizing and generally helping to fix and prepare the fort for what is to come. Not surprisingly, Yusef is often in or around the same vicinity as Sherra, and he makes small talk with the beautiful woman as they work. As usual, he spends part of the night on watch duty and replenishes his spells in the morning. He will make a couple more Fire Trapped bottles, and cast his few defensive spells as Argent thinks best.

Not long afterward, Yusef hears that Lord Sharadin has arrived with the reinforcements, so he goes to meet the newcomers. There are a variety of greetings and discussions, which Yusef observes silently. He does his best to help with unloading the supplies from the Stone House and getting the new men settled in.

There are priests among those who have just arrived. Yusef will introduce himself to them. Though he hadn't really expected it, he's a little disappointed that none of Celestian's earthly representatives are among them. Perhaps there are one or two of his faithful among the assembled group; he will have to introduce himself around over the next few days and see what he can learn.
Ivy wrote:“I’m honestly not sure what would be better,” Ivy admits. “I am concerned about just leaving it out in the open for all to see. I just feel that it could be in a safer place.”
Overhearing the discussion, Yusef steps forward. "It might be worth asking Lord Sharadin if the new king has said anything on the subject..."

The rest of the day will be spent continuing the work of cleaning and repairing the fort. It is dull work, but necessary. As they work, Yusef does his best to enliven it by chatting with anyone working nearby.

Cobversations and plans...

Sir Validar -

"That is a bit disappointing to hear," Validar responds. "I had hoped we would at least locate them. But what happened to Argent's flight ability? Did you not each take two of the power?"

“I must have missed that. I’ll have two of them in the morning.”

"Very well. It turns out not to have been detremental apparently. Hopefully tomorrow you will locate the enemy, or some indication of them. It is still important for the three of you to complete this mission, or at least attempt it until the pass is completely closed."

“I’m honestly not sure what would be better,” Ivy admits. “I am concerned about just leaving it out in the open for all to see. I just feel that it could be in a safer place.”

"The first question is whether the room can be opened and closed again and again or if it can only remain open. In that case, we could close the room in with stone and bar the door in a relatively short time. I would recommend against the Shields being brought together until all are in hand."

"That would indeed be expected. Perhaps Lord Sharadin can provide more information about it when he arrives."

Overhearing the discussion, Yusef steps forward. "It might be worth asking Lord Sharadin if the new king has said anything on the subject..."

"Indeed. It was not specifically mentioned to bring the Shield to Corunglain upon finding it. Only to be on the lookout for it. And while my feelings are that it is too risky to have two or three of them in one location, the King may have other plans to which we are not privy."

"Interesting. That does make sense. Very well, we shall requisition having one or more priests of either deity, or both, as soon as possible."

"I am not sure that you could honestly take it that far," Sir Validar responds. "Being a commoner does not make one automatically subservient to a noble. These men are all military and they therefore serve the King and their chain of command, first and foremost. Any noble could not order these men to do anything that would violate those duties."

Validar will turn to Sir Acerion. "I understand that it does not give us much time, but I would ask you to accompany Chareos and Argent on their scouting mission, as soon as you are all able. We can limit our search to about 2 hours time. With the mage's flight, it would not be able to go much longer than that anyway."

"Responding back to Lord Sharadin, he adds, "The situation may seem stable here, but without the location of the enemy determined, I am not as comfortable as I would like to be. Sir Corley can certainly maintain defense of this Fortress if the enemy were to attack while we were gone, but it would be unjust to deny him potential information. We can still be ready to go to Corunglain by mid-afternoon."

Corley takes over command of the troops and does a fine job organizing them. Validar will check the situation before he leaves, but is confident it will all be running smoothly. In the meantime, Validar can provide Sharadin with the list of items needed for the Fortress as well as requests for priests of Silvanus or Lathander to be stationed here.

While Sharadin is here, the dwarves arrive from their scouting expedition in the tunnels.

"Very well. While that is not the ideal situation, it is certainly one which can be overcome. I agree with your assessment that the coal supply is the primary concern. However, while we are not in direct danger of attack, I would recommend that your soldiers concentrate more on removing that blockage than engaging in guard duties or direct defense. In that way we can possibly be further along towards readying the assault on Hammerfall."

"If you would make me a listing of what will be needed to build a bridge to span the chasm and to shore up the tunnel where needed, I will do my best to have it all brought here at the soonest opportunity."

a lesson...

Sherra:
Sherra seems to be lingering as well, which is fine with the Guardians' leader. "Do you have a particular interest in ballistas, Sherra? My barony makes the finest seige weapons in the kingdom. Even as neglected as they are, there are several of these that are ready for battle with as little as new firing cords."

He goes about checking what needs to be done to bring them back into working order. Three seem to be in fairly good shape and minor preparations should have them ready again. Four others will need repairs made. Validar notes what is needed for future supply deliveries as well as new firing cords for each of them. The remaining three will need to be replaced entirely. Validar notes this as well and puts in a request for 6 additional ballistas to replace the irreparable ones and to have extras.
"I can't say I was overly interested in the topic," Sherra admits, "as I was more concerned that you might need something. Until we get more rope supply, my duties, besides a shift or two as a guard, are pretty minimal."

"However," Sherra continues, contemplating, "I shouldn't dismiss such an opportunity to learn something new and potentially useful, now should I?" she asks with one of her patented smiles.

Sherra will pay close attention to everything Validar inspects. She will try to identify some of the things he is looking for as they reach the last couple ballista. She will ask simple questions of Validar that won't take much explaination and therefore not detract from his efficient inspections.
The rest of the day is spent cleaning, organizing and generally helping to fix and prepare the fort for what is to come. Not surprisingly, Yusef is often in or around the same vicinity as Sherra, and he makes small talk with the beautiful woman as they work.
Sherra will be glad Yusef is near, somewhat aware he seems to be going out of his way to be close by. She doesn't mind one bit, and will share a couple of her more uplifting tales of her times at sea while they work.

Once the reinforcements arrive, there will probably be less work to do for each of them. Sherra will, however see if more rope was brought. If so, she will grab Yusef and anyone else who might be dispatched from among the soldiers to help and see about getting the defensive blocks working properly once more.

“I know you will. Return to me in one piece.”

Acerion looks deeply into Ivy's eyes, seeking to re-assure her. "I shall," the paladin tells her, "there is very little in all the planes that could keep me from your side for long."

Validar will turn to Sir Acerion. "I understand that it does not give us much time, but I would ask you to accompany Chareos and Argent on their scouting mission, as soon as you are all able. Sir Validar -

"I can't say I was overly interested in the topic," Sherra admits, "as I was more concerned that you might need something. Until we get more rope supply, my duties, besides a shift or two as a guard, are pretty minimal."

"Ah, I see," Validar responds, as he stops for a moment from his inspection of the seige defense weapon. "I apologize. At the moment, we seem to be doing well. We are accomplishing our goals and if this mission," he says casting a motion towards the Broken Lands where the scouts are now doing reconaissance, "is a success, then we will be doing very well. I trust that there will be more rope and other needed supplies arriving with Sharadin tomorrow and if not then certainly on our next resupply."

"However," Sherra continues, contemplating, "I shouldn't dismiss such an opportunity to learn something new and potentially useful, now should I?" she asks with one of her patented smiles.

A quick smile comes to Validar's face at this comment. "All learning opportunities have merit and value. That is something I too was taught as a child and firmly believe in. One never knows when some bit of information may prove valuable."

Sherra will pay close attention to everything Validar inspects. She will try to identify some of the things he is looking for as they reach the last couple ballista. She will ask simple questions of Validar that won't take much explaination and therefore not detract from his efficient inspections.

"As I mentioned, the craftsmen of Pyris make the finest ballistas in the kingdom. We are also quite proud of our other seige engines, however, the flexibility of the ballista designs are without equal," Validar explains as he continues his inspections. "In Pyris, we employ a system that allows the ballistas to not only easily pivot to create a greater firing area, but also to reverse the field of fire in case a wall is breached. Then the men can fire into the inner walled area, not only outwardly, as most castles are set up."

"Here, they have not employed that scheme, as the build out of the rampart does not allow for that. However, due to the need for ease of replacement of damaged defense weapons and the severe cold in the winter here, we have built a system of mobile platforms. While more ballistas are mobile, these can be moved more easily by just two crew and even by one if possible." Validar will continue to explain some of the features and details, without going into too much minutia and risking boring her.

"Of course, Validar," Acerion replies. "It would make me feel better about leaving knowing that we were able to scout again, regardless of whether we find anything this time or not."

"As always you can be counted on to go beyond the call, my friend. It is my hope this time that we are able to learn some news of the enemy's whereabouts."

Acerion will make preparations to go out once more, getting his pegasus ready and meeting everyone at the same spot once the time arrives for them to depart.

Despite everything that is going on, Validar will be certain to once more see off the scouts and to wish them well on their mission.

Backing up a bit...
Sir Validar wrote:
"That is all anyone can ask. I have some knowledge of battlefield magicks, but I have little experience with any but the most direct of defensive magicks. I have studied the concepts and strategies of defense, but it is always better to have someone with the specific knowledge directing the tactics and implementing the details. I would like to be present when the discussions are held, if you do not mind my presence."

“In that regard, your request is a logical one, Sir Validar. Of course you may observe. Admittedly my knowledge of mass battlefield tactics is limited.”

"Thank you. No slight intended, but it has been my experience that few mages have such skills. Many magic-users seem to be either adventuring types or scholars; more independent and less military-minded. A true Battle Mage is a very rare and valuable entity. Most mages serve particular purposes on the field of battle, just as do cavalry, infantry, archers, etc. But it is often the same tactical leaders who direct the actions of each battlefield unit that lead the mages and priests."

Chareos listens intently as the subject of a Battle Mage comes to pass. He had never thought or heard of a mage of this type. Surely Sharadin never truly touched on it. Perhaps he merely overlooked such a thing in his own role, as mentor and father. The idea of rounding himself out more to give the others a more solid backbone if the time came to such a thing proved sound.

The young man begins to speaks his mind before ever registering the words leaving his lips. “If such a mage does exist then surely our kingdom would only benefit from such a person and their experiences."

"I have never been one to be so self-absorbed to forget of my comrades though I do lack such knowledge of military tactics and training. A fact that could be rectified,” he states evenly. “Perhaps I do question things too much but isn’t that the thought process of tactics and strategy? To find the best way to render an opponent broken and defeated.”

“If such a Battle Mage does exist, then perhaps it's time this mage learn the ways of battle; to protect our home and our people to the best of my abilities.” His words become more confident and determined. “You are schooled in the way of Tactics and Seige, Sir Validar. If you were to teach me, you would not be disappointed.”
