New Frontiers #72

The Guardians' second day at Fort Fletcher begins to wind down. The weather continues to be miserable outside, but at least it's somewhat comfortable inside.

In the Shrine of Heironeous, Chareos has determined that the Shield of Justice lies beyond the wall behind the altar. A way to retrieve the Shield continues to be the main obstacle.

Arocken investigates the temple, adding his elfin skill to the task. No concealed passages are found and the battleaxes on the twin statues are solidly attached.

Yusef tries another tactic. He opens the doors between the Heironeous Altar and the Helm one. Suspecting that the large eye that is part of Helm’s symbol might have something to do with it, he sits before the altar trying to determine if any outside light source can possibly strike the eye. After spending several minutes scanning the area Yusef fails to find any direct path for light to reach the eye. It would need to be redirected from one of the outside areas to reach it.

Urged on by Chareos and Yusef, Sir Acerion attempts to see if any of their theories on how to reach the Shield will succeed. The skeletal remains of the priest found earlier are searched, but he has no belongings on him apart from his tattered robes.

Next Sir Acerion brings out his Holy Symbol, a piece of silver in the shape of a lightning bolt. First he attempts to put the symbol into the hole above the altar, but nothing happens. Next he tries using his Holy Axe without any success.
Sir Acerion wrote:If none of these ideas provide a solution, Acerion will hold his axe before him and attempt to open the room through divine blessing. "By my honor and the word and blessing of Heironeous, allow me to see the passage to the hidden room beyond. Allow me, your servant, access to where the Shield of Justice rests."
Nothing seems to be happening to those who are watching Acerion make his plea to his deity. A few moments, pass and Acerion’s legs seem to give out from underneath him! The knight catches himself before hitting the floor. It seems that he did receive a vision from Heironeous!

(And I’ll let Acerion reveal what he saw. Check your email!)

Elsewhere, Farian is off exploring the mine tunnels that deliver coal to the fortress. The tunnel leads back to a drop off. Traveling down the shaft, Farian emerges in a natural cavern some 400 feet below. The chill of the mine tunnel fades and he feels the normal warmth of being underground again.

Coal is delivered into this cavern from another mine tunnel some thirty feet overhead. Farian flies up to this tunnel and gives it a quick look around. The cart tracks and the wooden chute both lead off into the darkness. After eighty feet the mineshaft suddenly ends at a cave in. Rocks, dirt, and debris flood the passageway.

Farian examines what he can of the cave in. The rock around it does seem to be solid, suggesting that the debris can be moved without triggering another cave in. Retracing his steps, Farian gathers up what coal he can carry and flies back to report his findings. A rope is attached to the bars above the chute and dropped down to the fortress below.

The day begins to wind down. The evening meal is prepared and enjoyed by all. Lyonessa and Yusef use Logs of Everburning spells to make the fuel supply last longer during the night. Thanks to their magicks it will not be necessary to add more fuel during the night, making the night watches task a bit easier. Argent casts an Alarm spell in the Ballista hallway for extra security.

The night passes peacefully enough. The blizzard dies down shortly after nightfall as well. It’s cloudy for most of the evening, but as the dawn comes closer it begins to clear. Looking out from the fortress you can see that a thick blanket of snow has covered the pass.

Argent assists Po in cleaning his Armor. Casting her Cantrip, she quickly cleans the armor and removes its odors. Lastly she changes the armors color to what Po specified. The whole task takes less than half an hour.

Farian and Aria use the rope to climb back up the coal chute and are back into the mine tunnel once more. The pulley system used to raise the coal to the fortress level is examined. It’s still in good shape. A little lubricating is needed to make it function. The pulley can be moved by hand if you so desire.

Experimentation will show that Aria can move the pulley system with as many as five of the buckets filled with coal. It takes twenty buckets to fill the ore cart. Each cartful will keep the furnaces running for four hours. Aria concurs that the cave-in further along seems stable enough that removing the debris is possible.

Sir Validar -

The second day at Fort Fletcher winds down and so far Validar would have to consider their mission a success at this point. One more day and Lord Sharadin and the reinforcements are scheduled to arrive. So far they have managed to secure the fortress; the 'undead' haunting it have not been put to rest, but at least they are not a threat; one portion of the Guardian Shield has been located, if not as yet recovered; the coal supply has been located; and their enemy is not yet in sight. Even the one negative that has occured, the weather, may be working in their advantage as well. Whether that turns out to be a bigger problem due to the presence of Auril and her minions of cold remains to be seen.

Validar has arranged and straightened more of the Commander's rooms and set up a place to organize the workings of the fortress. After the evening meal with everyone, Validar will walk the defenses as he is accustomed to do, checking to see everything is in place and what else needs to be done in order to properly continue the defense of Fort Fletcher. As the evening comes to an end, he removes his armor, and settles in for a comfortable sleep.

The next morning it is determined that the storm that had died down the previous night has not continued throughout the night. Even the clouds that shrouded the night have parted, clearing somewhat by morning. Validar is up at first light and checks to see if anything transpired during the night. Apparently it was quiet. From the towers at the top of the Fortress, Validar can see a thick blanket of snow covering the ground as far as the eye can see.

"It looks like the pass has been slowed down. It is not likely that the enemy made any progress during the storm and now will have to slog through the deep snow or else have some magickal way to remove it from their path."

Later, he will address those that were to go on the scouting mission yesterday: Chareos, Argent and Sir Acerion. "I would like the three of you to conduct the scouting mission today, since the sky is clear. In addition, with the ample snow covering, the troops should be easily seen against the white backdrop. Your scouting mission should be easier than expected. Coupled with the clearing in the sky, the sun should also help to shadow you from view below."

"We should wait until perhaps just after noon, so the sun will be above or behind you on your approach. Inform me when you are ready to leave."

Validar will also approach Lyonessa about having Dusk, her owl familiar, travel along with them, but at a distance behind. "Lyonessa, is it possible for Dusk to travel with them as a look-out, so to speak, as far behind as possible so that should something unexpected happen to them, he can inform us in some way?" If so, then this is one more layer of safety that should satisfy some of the more doubtful members of the group about the soundness of the offensive strategy.

Later that morning, Po is seen wearing a new armor, in the colors of Pyris. Validar will approach the lad and comment briefly on his new armor and obvious allegience.

Aria and Farian go to explore the caverns more and determine whether the coal delivery system can be worked manually until it can be completely repaired. The dwarves leave in the morning and Validar is interested to know what they find.

Validar will be certain to meet with each of the Guardians again individually in the morning, or throughout the day as available, to see how they are each faring, what they have accomplished and what other supplies may be needed.

Validar will see the scouts off from the tower parapet when they are ready to leave. "Good luck to each of you on your mission. You know what you each need to do. Work together as a team and rely on each other to cover yourselves. Do as much damage to the enemy as you can, once you encounter them, but do not take unnecessary risks." Validar will remain on the parapet until long after they have disappeared from sight and he will ask to have the lookout there inform him immediately as soon as they are sighted again on return.

Chareos
Chareos watches in anticipation as Acerion begins to try his holy symbol then his axe to no avail. Thankfully not all their options are expired and he soon calls to his Deity for assistance. For what seems longer than the actual time Chareos listens and waits only to see Acerion’s legs buckle beneath him. Rushing to his friend's side he helps support him until he has his legs, “Are you alright, my friend?”

As the day begins to unfold Chareos seeks out Lord Corley with his new Broadsword in hand. Approaching the knight he will ask if they could spare off a little so that Chareos can learn the basics of the sword.

As night begins to envelop them in its embrace, dinner is soon prepared. Chareos eats lightly then begins to clear away the mess. Afterward he will help gather the broken crates/arrow shafts and such and begin bringing them to the furnaces.

Time flies by as he begins studying his spells for the coming day and soon the tiredness of the day takes him to his dreams.

“I will make myself ready for when the time arrives. It should prove interesting, perhaps even giving the filth a fiery wake up call,” he says with a sudden smirk.

Farian

Walking down the mines a smile comes to his face as the warmth of the earth surrounds him. One thought runs through his mind, “Tis good to be home again.” Then he spots the landslide.

Noticing most of the rubble to be large rocks, dirt and debris he eyes the cave-in curiously and then inspects what he can. After several minutes of surveying the cave-in he surmises that the cave more than likely can be cleared.

Gathering as much coal as he can he ties off his rope and heads down to the fortress. Even with the aid of the rope he slips and slides down the chute and down to the ground his hands burning to slow his passage. Blowing his hands with his breath to cool them he looks up at the chute and grumbles, then heads off to find Aria and Validar.

When both are gathered he retells his finding to them. After some rest and food, in which he takes some grease from the kitchens. Farian and Aria begin to head off to the mines. Grondar asks if he may be of any assistance.
Grondar looks over at his fellow dwarves. "Let me know if you can use any help in the tunnels. Validar's idea of using this as a starting point in our reclamation of Hammerfall may have some merit, and it would be good to know more of the situation there."
“If ye be liking to go then let us be on our way. Time ’s awastin.”

Reaching the rope he shimmies up fairly easy and helps Aria, and Grondar if he chooses to come.

As they begin walking the mines he tells the others, “From what my eyes be seein’ the mines are not a total loss. Validar might be right about the mines bein our best way.” He looks to Aria, “Clearing the cave-in ain't be being a problem. Take a look for yourself,” he says as he extends his arms to the passage that leads to the cave in.

Soon after Farian goes about filling buckets of coal to be brought to the pulley system after 2 buckets are in it becomes apparent the pulleys need to be greased. Ever the resourceful dwarf he pulls some grease from his pack, “These will be doin the trick,” he says as he slaps some grease on the pulley. And then goes back to filling more of the buckets.

Validar wrote:"Very good, my dwarven friend. Argent will be coordinating the selection and placement of these spells. If you feel that this Weather Stasis spell has a chance to succeed, then perhaps we should try it in the morning. Otherwise, whatever you can add to our defenses would be appreciated. I am concerned we could be seeing an attack at some point and I do not wish to be taken unawares."
"In truth, I doubt the spell will help much, unless we are directly attacked by the forces of the Cold One. However, I will discuss it with Argent and the other spellcasters."

That evening, Grondar approaches Argent to find out when the discussion of spell choices for the following day will be. At the appropriate time, he will describe the miracles that are available to him that may be of use either against the cold or in defending the keep. *

Rising in the morning, Grondar turns to his devotions and prayers. Afterwards, he breaks his fast, noting that the blizzard that existed previously seems to have died down. As the clouds clear away, the sun can be seen, leaving a beautiful vista from the top of the keep.

Grondar again approaches Argent, asking which miracles to cast where, and which to save for later.
Farian wrote:“If ye be liking to go then let us be on our way. Time ’s awastin.”
"Ahh, yes. Let me gather my things and I'll join you promptly. I am eager to see what condition our halls are in."

Grondar shoulders his pack and joins the other dwarves on their trip into Hammerfall. The climb up the rope is the toughest part, as Grondar isn't particularly practiced in this area. Still, with Farian's help, he eventually reaches the interior of the mine.

Grondar follows the others to the cave-in. "About how thick do you think this pile of debris is, Wayfinder? That should give us some idea of how long it will take to clear. Once the other issues are taken care of," he says, thumbing back toward the keep, "I may be able to bring Berronar's power to bear on helping with the problem."

* Grondar's suggestions for spell selection are as follows: some combination of four of Bless, Blessed Watchfulness, Endure Cold (1 or more) and Protection from Evil at 1st level; four picked from Aid, Augury, Hold Person, Resist Cold (short duration), Silence 15' Radius and Wyvern Watch at 2nd level; Dispel Magic, Glyph of Warding, Prayer and Squeaking Floors at 3rd level; and Protection from Evil 10' Radius, Recitation and Weather Stasis at 4th level, though Protection from Lightning may be a useful alternate. Feel free to make suggestions - especially Argent, since she's in charge of coordination.

Yusef:

While working in the temples that morning, Yusef checks for ways the sun might shine on Helm's altar. Disappointingly, it quickly become apparent that this is not possible without some kind of help. With no better ideas, he returns to Chareos and Acerion to observe the latter's attempts to open the way.
GM Mad wrote:Nothing seems to be happening to those who are watching Acerion make his plea to his deity. A few moments, pass and Acerion’s legs seem to give out from underneath him! The knight catches himself before hitting the floor. It seems that he did receive a vision from Heironeous!

As he and Chareos watch Acerion call on the powers of his patron, Acerion suddenly staggers! Yusef dashes to the side of Acerion opposite Chareos, doing his best to support the young paladin. He immediately begins scanning Acerion for any sign of injury or illness as he awaits the warrior's reply.
Validar wrote:"I do not think we can be too redundant or too careful at the moment. As each of you are quickly replenished by your patrons, using these powers on even a daily basis may make the difference between repelling an attack successfully and not. Let Argent know what you have available, both now and new possibilities in the morning."
"I will be happy to do that, Sir Validar," Yusef replies.

Later that evening, Yusef will join in the discussion of spell selection for the following day. "I'm afraid I have nothing that would be immediately useful, but I'm happy to discuss what I could request on the morrow." Indeed, Yusef reviews his available options, in much the same manner as Grondar has before him. *

During Yusef's shift on watch that night, he notes that the snow seems to be lessening somewhat. By time he's finished his night's sleep and morning prayers, the snow has stopped entirely. It is quickly turning into a glorious day.

Encountering Po in his new armor, Yusef makes a point of speaking to him. "Looking good, Po. Argent did a great job cleaning that up."

Yusef casts any spells as directed by Argent before returning to any other work. Afterwards, he will see if there is any rope work left to assist Sherra and Rat with. If not, he'll keep himself busy cleaning, letting Ivy direct him to the most important areas, and generally helping out wherever he's needed.

* For spell selection, this is what Yusef has available: Bless, Blessed Watchfulness, Call Upon Faith, Endure Cold, Log of Everburning and Protection from Evil at 1st level, of which he can take 4; 3 of Aura of Comfort, Fire Trap, Flame Blade, Heat Metal, Resist Cold, Silence 15' Radius and Wyvern Watch at 2nd level; at 3rd level, he may take 1 of Dispel Magic, Glyph of Warding or Summon Animal Spirit (not affected by cold). Of course, the usefulness of combat-oriented spells depends on the likelihood of getting into combat that day. Recommendations welcome.

Acerion:

Urged on by Chareos and Yusef, Sir Acerion attempts to see if any of their theories on how to reach the Shield will succeed. The skeletal remains of the priest found earlier are searched, but he has no belongings on him apart from his tattered robes.

Next Sir Acerion brings out his Holy Symbol, a piece of silver in the shape of a lightning bolt. First he attempts to put the symbol into the hole above the altar, but nothing happens. Next he tries using his Holy Axe without any success.

Undaunted by the lack of success, Acerion continues to try each idea or suggestion. Eventually he has exhausted all possiblities but one. Concentrating, Acerion calls out to Heironeous in the hopes of being shown something useful. This turns out to be more rewarding then he could have ever imagined.

Nothing seems to be happening to those who are watching Acerion make his plea to his deity. A few moments, pass and Acerion’s legs seem to give out from underneath him! The knight catches himself before hitting the floor. It seems that he did receive a vision from Heironeous!

"Thank you my friends," Acerion says as he seems to come around from whatever overtook him. Within seconds he seems completely able to stand on his own and without injury. "I have been blessed this day. Heironeous has rewarded my faithfulness and honor by showing me the way."

Anticipating there will be a desire for him to continue, Acerion walks over to one of the statues, "The Skybolts are indeed the key. My vision showed Chareos and the Lady Argent standing before the statues, one in front of each. Then they cast a spell that brought electricity to their hands and touched each bolt at the same time. The electricity then leapt its way up and into the hole, which caused a portion of the wall to vanish. Then the path is clear and open."

Acerion will see what Chareos and Argent have to say on the matter, and when they wish to try their spells. Being unfamiliar with all the different mage spells, Acerion isn't positive which spell he saw, "I'm not sure exactly which spell it was that was cast, but it definitely wasn't a lightning bolt. The spell used seemed to have no range and was definitely a weaker spell. It was sufficient to open up the wall however."

After a pause, Acerion asks, "Whenever you believe you wish to try this, I would prefer to be present if at all possible."

Acerion will also see about properly interning the recovered bodies that have been denied their final resting place for so long.

"That will be plenty of time," Acerion tells Validar and will go to make sure his pegasus is ready, as well as preparing his armor and weapons for the mission.

Before he departs, he will seek out Lady Ivy. "I shall be leaving soon to do our scouting run. With any luck the enemy will be waist deep in snow and unable to put up any resistance. Try your best not to worry for us, for I will make sure all of us come back alive."

Acerion will pull Ivy close to him, his hand in her hair as he embraces her. Then with a soft kiss to her lips, he is gone.

"You may rest your faith in our abilities Validar," Acerion replies. "We will all return, on that you have my word." He will clasp wrists with Validar and nod reassuringly to both Chareos and Argent. Once they are ready, he will direct his pegasus to take flight.

Argent:
Chareos wrote:“Or perhaps two Wraithform spells,” he surmises. “If we couldn’t get through the hole we know we couldn’t breach it that way. As for the Dig spell you really think it wise to defile Heironeous temple? I would rather not take such an action, ” he asks with skepticism etched on his face.
“I had considered Wraithform too,” Argent explains. “I wasn’t sure if the Shield was too large to be considered part of your regular belongings. That coupled with needing your hands free to cast the spell makes me doubt that would be successful. At least with Dimension Door, you can move extra weight above and beyond your own. It all depends how heavy the Shield is as to whether that would succeed or not.”

“I would not consider it defiling to use a Dig spell. Walls can be rebuilt after all. But I agree, that it such a measure should only be used as a last ditch effort.”
Yusef wrote:As Argent and Chareos discuss the problem, Yusef just listens in. "It is possible that one of those methods may prove successful, though I'm inclined to agree with Chareos with regard to any spell that may damage the temple. Still, it seems to me that there may be a way specifically designed for reaching that room, and I think it would be a good idea to attempt to find it if we may." Yusef heads off down the hall toward Helm's temple, wondering if the two are connected in some way.
“Oh, I agree, Yusef. I’m just mentioning those methods that I could make use of to acquire the shield should other measures fail. The spells I mentioned are not ones I have even committed to memory, so the earliest I could even make the attempt would be tomorrow.”

Sir Acerion then attempts to use his divine connection to Heironeous to make clear the way to the shield.
Nothing seems to be happening to those who are watching Acerion make his plea to his deity. A few moments, pass and Acerion’s legs seem to give out from underneath him! The knight catches himself before hitting the floor. It seems that he did receive a vision from Heironeous!
Argent watches with interest at what unfolds, but does not rush to tend Acerion as the others do. Instead she slowly approaches and waits for the knight to regain his wits. “Did your vision show how we may reach the shield?”, she’ll inquire once he has shaken off his experience.

Sir Acerion wrote:"Thank you my friends," Acerion says as he seems to come around from whatever overtook him. Within seconds he seems completely able to stand on his own and without injury. "I have been blessed this day. Heironeous has rewarded my faithfulness and honor by showing me the way."

“Sounds like a Shocking Grasp spell”, Argent states. “That would fit what you described, Sir Acerion. It’s a simple spell, but alas not one I have in memory. I will have one ready tomorrow. We can retrieve the Shield in the morning.”
Sir Validar wrote:"At this point, it may prove helpful. Until the reinforcements arrive, we are vulnerable simply due to the few number of eyes we possess in total. Any magickal alarms or defenses, temporary though they may be, are not wasted, I believe. Argent, you will be in charge of coordinating any of the defense or detection spells that we might possess, both now and tomorrow. If there are ones that need to be replenished daily, then I suggest we continue to do so for the time being, as long as utilizing those spells does not hamper our offensive capabilities. It is still very important to be ready to locate and attack the humanoid invaders."
“I had committed Alarm into memory before we left Corunglain,” Argent explains. “I thought it would be a spell that would be needed given our current situation.”

Argent is mildly surprised that she’s put in charge of placing and assigning the magical protections, but makes not mention of it. “I will do what I can, Sir Validar.”

Later that evening, Argent gathers with the other mages and the clerics to prepare for the protection spells. Having little knowledge of clerical magic, Argent will ask about spell details as the clerics explain their abilities.
That evening, Grondar approaches Argent to find out when the discussion of spell choices for the following day will be. At the appropriate time, he will describe the miracles that are available to him that may be of use either against the cold or in defending the keep.

Later that evening, Yusef will join in the discussion of spell selection for the following day. "I'm afraid I have nothing that would be immediately useful, but I'm happy to discuss what I could request on the morrow." Indeed, Yusef reviews his available options, in much the same manner as Grondar has before him.
“I’ve always been fascinated by magic since I was a little girl”, Argent admits. “In fact at one time I was seriously considered joining the Mystrain Church. Alas, I would have made a poor cleric of the Lady of Mysteries. I was much more suited to wield her magical energies as an Invoker instead.”

After taking all the facts presented to her, Argent will consider for a time before making her requests. “We’ve got a variety of spells here. I’m basically in charge of putting magical protections into place, so lets concentrate on those first. Chareos, do you know Wizard Lock and Wizard Sympathy? If so, put an equal number of those spells into memory tomorrow. We’re going to seal off some of the doors on the upper levels that we’re not using.”

“Wizard Lock these four doors,” Argent says indicating the maps they were given. (The ones that lead to areas 501, 508, and the 2 off of 507.) “Those doors will then only easily open for Chareos. However, by casting Wizard Sympathy on several items, those on guard duty will still be able to pass through those portals. We’ll repeat this again the next day to cover more doors that lead directly down into the fortress. I’d do it myself, but Wizard Sympathy is a spell that is barred to me.”

“This Blessed Watchfulness spell seems very useful. Let’s make sure that at least one person on guard duty has it cast on them at all times. Grondar, Yusef, Ivy, and Lyonessa (assuming she has the spell) can share this duty.”

“Much like the Wizard Locked doors, I’d like to have this area covered with Glyphs of Warding since they are long lasting. Again, we’ll start laying them down at the farthest points and work back inwards to the heart of the fortress. They should be targeted to affect evil beings. I’d just as soon not put any spells into place that we might accidentally set off ourselves. Until the Glyphs are set, we'll use Alarm, Wyvern Watch, and Squeaky Floor spells to temporarily protect the ballista area. We’ll space them out so that they don’t overlap each other.

“Fire Trap has some great possibilities. I have it myself, but it’s a much more difficult spell for a mage than a priest. I’d just as soon not cast it myself, as it would take away from some of my more powerful spells. Instead of casting on say a door, lets find some bottles that can be seal and cast it on them. We can use these as ranged weapons the next time we’re in battle. Simply throw the bottle at the enemy and it’ll explode in fire when it shatters. Each priest who can do this should make up a collection of Fire Trapped bottles for their own use.”

“Otherwise, take whatever spells you would normally would have. I’m sure that they are going to be needed.”
Sir Validar wrote:Later, he will address those that were to go on the scouting mission yesterday: Chareos, Argent and Sir Acerion.

“As you wish, Sir Validar. At least I won’t be shivering in the cold.”
Sir Validar wrote:Validar will see the scouts off from the tower parapet when they are ready to leave. "Good luck to each of you on your mission. You know what you each need to do. Validar will remain on the parapet until long after they have disappeared from sight and he will ask to have the lookout there inform him immediately as soon as they are sighted again on return.
“Not to worry, good sir knight. We’ll do more than get their attention. Besides, it might be fun.”

Once the others are ready, Argent will cast Fly on herself and head out after the others.

After a pause, Acerion asks, "Whenever you believe you wish to try this, I would prefer to be present if at all possible."

“Sounds like a Shocking Grasp spell”, Argent states. “That would fit what you described, Sir Acerion. It’s a simple spell, but alas not one I have in memory. I will have one ready tomorrow. We can retrieve the Shield in the morning.”
“I agree. Nor do I have that spell in memory.” he evenly states. “You did well, Sir Acerion.”

I’d just assume not put any spells into place that we might accidentally set off ourselves.

Each priest who can do this should make up a collection of Fire Trapped bottles for their own use.”

Chareos sits and listens to Argent around the table but quickly sees a flaw with in her well thought out plan. As he flips through is tome, he notices a spell that she has mentioned he has not learned….

“Off all the spells that I possess within this book one of which you mention escapes my knowledge.” he says with a slight sigh. “ Wizard’s Sympathy is known to me though Wizard’s Lock is not. Being on the road most of my travels I never owned many items that needed protection, I thought it would be a waste but now I see the error in my judgement.”
“If you possess Wizard’s Lock within your tome, I could attempt to learn it. With the added use of My Ioun stone I could do most of the doors you speak of fairly quickly.” he says confidently.

A sudden thought comes to him and he puts forward his thoughts. “With the broken door in the ballista area, while contained for now still shows as a weakness from the outside eye. Why don’t we erect an Illusionary wall that matches the outer wall? While not the best of ways to deal with the cold it will give the appearance of a solid wall, rather then a makeshift wall. Though it would have to be dispelled when repairs were added."

"This spell could also be used to hide certain doors that could hold importance for us."
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Sherra:
Yusef casts any spells as directed by Argent before returning to any other work. Afterwards, he will see if there is any rope work left to assist Sherra and Rat with.
"We've just about exhausted our rope supply," Sherra tells Yusef. "Until we get resupplied there will be very little we can do."

Sherra will have very little else to do except to be available to various guard shifts. Apparently there is some news about the Shield of Justice being found. It sounds like they will be able to retrieve it soon.

The storm also lets up, so the next day the scouting party will be going out. Sherra will stay close to Validar in case he has need of anything once the scouts depart since we now will be a little short-handed.

Lyonessa:

Validar will also approach Lyonessa about having Dusk, her owl familiar, travel along with them, but at a distance behind. "Lyonessa, is it possible for Dusk to travel with them as a look-out, so to speak, as far behind as possible so that should something unexpected happen to them, he can inform us in some way?" If so, then this is one more layer of safety that should satisfy some of the more doubtful members of the group about the soundness of the offensive strategy.

"Of course, Sir Validar," Lyonessa replies. "Both myself and Arocken can communicate well with Dusk. I will explain it to Dusk, and also tell Arocken what we are doing so if spots the owl he could quickly know what happened."

Lyonessa will call for Dusk and explain his upcoming role. She doesn't want him risking injury. She will also seek out Arocken and let him know what is going on.

“This Blessed Watchfulness spell seems very useful. Let’s make sure that at least one person on guard duty has it cast on them at all times. Grondar, Yusef, Ivy, and Lyonessa (assuming she has the spell) can share this duty.”

Talk of priestly magic is brought up as everyone discusses adding more defense to the fort. "I do have access to that spell as well," Lyonessa says. "I will adjust my spells for it accordingly. I also can take Alarm and Fire Trap," Lyonessa says when those spells are discussed later.

Lyonessa sees them off as well. Once they are underway, she will have Dusk depart. She stays there for a long time as well, but doesn't say anything, leaving Validar to his thoughts. Eventually she will return inside and see if she can help in the kitchen or anywhere else.

“Yes, I do have the spell in my book. Alas, it is Wizard Sympathy that I cannot make use of as it is an Enchantment.”

Argent will fish out the spell book that contains Wizard Lock later that night after she conjures her magical dwelling.

“I’d just as soon save a higher level spell slot for something that’s more useful,” Argent states after a moment’s thought. “The ballista platform is high enough up that from the ground the spell really wouldn’t make any difference. Besides the platform would still remain, only the state of the door would change. It's very little gain for such a high-level spell.”
Chareos wrote:"This spell could also be used to hide certain doors that could hold importance for us."
“It could, but the defenses I’ve been selecting are ones that will either not harm the fortress defenders or ignores them completely. Only the enemy should be impeded by our defenses. Concealing doors with illusions would hinder defenders as well as any attackers.”
Lyonessa wrote:Talk of priestly magic is brought up as everyone discusses adding more defenses to the fort. "I do have access to that spell as well," Lyonessa says. “That’s wonderful, Lyonessa. Please do.”

“Oh, and it almost slipped my mind. It would be a great benefit to start stockpiling Continual Light items. These can be used in three places. The first is those public areas of the fortress, such as the ground level to help brighten the place up. Orcs hate the light, so it will help deter them as well.”

“Secondly, it should be cast into several of the bullseye lanterns. The guards can carry these and the focusing element of the lanterns can be adjusted to what is needed. Lastly, some Continual Lights should be cast on small rocks and other items with no significant value. Should we be attacked by orcs, it's most likely it would be at night. These Continual Light rocks could then be thrown from the battlements amongst the enemy. The light will bother them and give our ranged attacks better targets.”

“We should probably get some rest. Tomorrow promises to be a busy day.”

Next morning, Argent will cast Shocking Grasp in the Heironeous Shrine with Chareos, place a few Continual Light spells and then go scouting as directed by Sir Validar.

Ivy:
Yusef nods, then turns to Ivy and gestures at the potion bottles. "Ladies first."
“Thank you, Yusef.”

Later that night there is a spell discussion between the mages and the priests about setting up magical defenses. Ivy listens for the most part, but will speak when necessary.

“I do have access to some of the spells discussed thus far. I also can pray for Alarm, Blessed Watchfulness, Wyvern Watch, and Glyph of Warding. The Glyphs that I place can be triggered by evil beings and will paralyze them. I cannot lay a Glyph that would intentionally harm some one.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Before he departs, he will seek out Lady Ivy. "I shall be leaving soon to do our scouting run. With any luck the enemy will be waist deep in snow and unable to put up any resistance. Try your best not to worry for us, for I will make sure all of us come back alive."
“There is a way for me not to worry, my love,” Ivy says. “I have a spell called Sacred Guardian that I can cast upon you. The spell will alert me should you be in any danger. Unless the spell is triggered, then I will have no reason to worry.”
Sir Acerion wrote:Acerion will pull Ivy close to him, his hand in her hair as he embraces her. Then with a soft kiss to her lips, he is gone.
The kiss ends far too soon and Sir Acerion is gone. Ivy will watch from the battlements long after the scouts are out of sight.

Validar wrote:"That would be unfortunate. Nevertheless, I think it prudent to explore the caverns as far as they do go, both for the possibilities of entering Hammerfall without having to travel overland and also for our defense as well."
“Agreed.”
Grondar looks over at his fellow dwarves. "Let me know if you can use any help in the tunnels. Validar's idea of using this as a starting point in our reclamation of Hammerfall may have some merit, and it would be good to know more of the situation there."
“You are more than welcomed to come along, Grondar. Far be it from me to keep another dwarf out of a dwarven mine! Your presence would be most welcomed.”

Aria climbs up the rope easily enough. Those around the dwarven battlemaiden will note that the gauntlets she wears magically enhance her strength. Likewise moving the pulley system by hand is an easy enough task for her.

After the initial exploration of the coal supply area, Aria will say, “I think the three of us can handle this well enough. I can work the pulley. Farian, you start to fill the buckets with coal. Grondar can work the cart on the upper level; emptying it when it's full and then moving it back to be filled up. Let’s get six cartfuls into the fortress. Alright lads, lets but our backs into it!”

Once that task is complete, the group moves to examine the caved-in area.
As they begin walking the mines he tells the others, "From what my eyes be seein' the mines are not a total loss. Validar might be right about the mines bein our best way." He looks to Aria, "Clearing the cave-in ain't be being a problem. Take a look for yourself," he says as he extends his arms to the passage that leads to the cave in.
“Aye, I agree,” Aria says looking the tunnel over. “It does seem solid enough. At the very least, let’s see if we can clear a way through this cave in.”

Aria will climb to the top of the debris pile and begin to move the large rocks aside by hand or with help if necessary. Her goal right now is to just get past the blockage, not complete clean out the cavern. Of course they will stop every few hours to rest and sample some dwarven ale.

Sir Validar -

Day 2:
"Very good, my dwarven friend.

"I cannot say, as I have no idea what the spell does, nor its limitations. I will be attending the meeting as well, as I wish to know as much as possible about our defenses firsthand."

Validar hears about the identifying of the location of the Guardian Shield and is quite pleased. Apparently, they identified the method of recovering it as well. Validar notes that way was opened to a follower of Heironeous to recover that portion of the Shield, the Shield of Justice, that belongs to Heironeous. That could prove useful in recovering the other portions that are lost.

"That will be an additional bonus, my friends. Having the Shield recovered by the time that Lord Sharadin arrives will be another 'feather in our cap' on this mission."

Argent is mildly surprised that she’s put in charge of placing and assigning the magical protections, but makes not mention of it. “I will do what I can, Sir Validar.”

"That is all anyone can ask. I have some knowledge of battlefield magicks, but I have little experience with any but the most direct of defensive magicks. I have studied the concepts and strategies of defense, but it is always better to have someone with the specific knowledge directing the tactics and implementing the details. I would like to be present when the discussions are held, if you do not mind my presence."

Later that evening, Argent gathers with the other mages and the clerics to prepare for the protection spells. Having little knowledge of clerical magic, Argent will ask about spell details as the clerics explain their abilities.

Validar joins the grouping of the mages and clerics, but is silent throughout the proceeding, choosing to listen and learn. He stays a short distance away to the back of the room and remains as unobtrusive as possible.

He only joins the group directly when Argent has made her decisions and starts to lay out the specifics of the defenses.

“Fire Trap has some great possibilities. I have it myself, but it’s a much more difficult spell for a mage than a priest. I’d just assume not cast it myself, as it would take away from some of my more powerful spells.

"That will certainly help our ranged abilities should it become necessary to defend this fortress directly. Until the oil cauldrons can be repaired, collecting as many of these weapons as possible will be a good idea, as they can then be used by our regular troops as well in the future if that is necessary." Validar cannot help speak up at this point. Argent's tactic is a good one.

She then mentions the use of the Continual Light spells. They will be very helpful in use around the fortress. She mentions tossing items into the midst of the enemies as well, in order to hamper them being nocturnal beings and also to make their targets easier to see. Validar will think long about some other tactics that could be used, perhaps preparing the area with some covered spells.

Day 3:
Later, he will address those that were to go on the scouting mission yesterday: Chareos, Argent and Sir Acerion. "I would like the three of you to conduct the scouting mission today, since the sky is clear. In addition, with the ample snow covering, the troops should be easily seen against the white backdrop. Your scouting mission should be easier than expected. Coupled with the clearing in the sky, the sun should also help to shadow you from view below."

"We should wait until perhaps just after noon, so the sun will be above or behind you on your approach. Inform me when you are ready to leave."

“I will make myself ready for when the time arrives. It should prove interesting, perhaps even giving the filth a fiery wake up call,” he says with a sudden smirk.

"Very good," Validar says, clapping the fighting mage on the shoulder. "I only wish I could be there with you to strike the first blow. We won't win the battle in one strike, but if you each do your job, we should give them a very 'bloody nose'."

"That will be plenty of time," Acerion tells Validar and will go to make sure his pegasus is ready, as well as preparing his armor and weapons for the mission.

"I will meet you all at the parapets above the Heironeous Temple."

"You may rest your faith in our abilities Validar," Acerion replies. "We will all return, on that you have my word." He will clasp wrists with Validar and nod reassuringly to both Chareos and Argent. Once they are ready, he will direct his pegasus to take flight.

Lyonessa, Ivy, and Sherra are there, as is Arocken as the scouts prepare to depart. "I am supremely confident in each of you and are certain that you will meet with nothing but success." Validar returns the handshake, as he speaks.

“Not to worry, good sir knight. We’ll do more than get their attention. Besides, it might be fun.”

Once the others are ready, Argent will cast Fly on herself and head out after the others.

"Indeed, "the knight respons with a grin. "Then I wish you an incredibly 'fun' time." In moments the trio is gone. Some moments after that, Lyonessa sends Dusk out as well. Everyone watches silently as they all disappear from view. The silence is extended until many moments later.

"Arocken, I would like you to remain on this post as lookout until they return. Inform me immediately upon seeing them."

"I am certain we all have tasks to keep us busy until our friends return," Validar says to the rest of the group that assembled here. "When they return I should think we will be celebrating our next victory of this portion of the campaign."

Validar will spend most of the time inspecting the ballistas and their platforms and seeing if any of them are still functional, as well as checking their ammuntiiton levels. This work also keeps him close to the battlements for when the scouts return.

“You don’t know Wizard Lock?”, Argent says in near disbelief. “It’s one of the basic spells accessible to all mages regardless of field of studies. Its usefulness extends to almost anything that has a lock, like chests and even some books.”

Chareos merely gives a helpless shrug in reply.
“Yes, I do have the spell in my book. Alas, it is Wizard Sympathy that I cannot make use of as it is an Enchantment.”

Argent will fish out the spell book that contains Wizard Lock later that night after she conjures her magical dwelling.
Taking the spell book from Argent, “Thank you I will return it when I’m finished.” and sits down and begins studying the Wizard lock spell. He soon unravels the spell and begins writing it within his tome. He then memorizes two of Wizard Lock and Two of Wizard sympathy and goes about the plan.

"Perhaps the Laterns they carry would be a fitting 'Key' or perhaps a blank piece of parchment." he says as an after thought

In the morning he will rememorize his second level spells and seal off the other two doors and make magical 'keys' for them , Cast Shocking Grasp with Argent and then go scouting with the others.
To serve and protect those who cannot.

"Thank you, beautiful lady. I'll join you presently."

The dwarven warrior-maiden climbs the rope more easily than he himself. While he lacks not the strength - thanks to his enchanted Gauntlets - he proves rather awkward in the performance of the task. Nevertheless, he gets there eventually and rejoins his fellow dwarves.

"An excellent idea, Aria. I would be glad to help." Grondar takes his position by the cart and performs his task as best he can.

Later, at the cave-in, Aria plunges into trying to clear the way by hand. Not wanting to be left standing on the sidelines, Grondar pitches in, putting his back to it. If they cannot clear it, he intends to know why.

Acerion's story is truly amazing; he has received a vision from his patron! Even better, the vision seems to explain exactly how to reach the Shield they seek. While he's not familiar with the magic involved, it seems Argent and Chareos are. They should have the Shield of Justice in their possession tomorrow morning!

Post Continued:

The reclamation of Fort Fletcher continues. You have one more day before Lord Sharadin returns with support troops. The mundane works centers on preparing the quarters areas for the impending arrivals.

Armed with a defensive strategy, the spellcasters begin using spells as they discussed the night before. Chareos has learned Wizard Lock from Argent’s Spell Book and has used it to seal off two of the outside doors on the top level of the fortress. Additionally, he casts a pair of Wizard Sympathy spells one on a lantern and another on blank piece of paper.

Argent places on Continual Light spell on the same lantern that Chareos put Wizard Sympathy on. She puts another Continual Light on a small rock.

The priests make Blessed Watchfulness available to those on guard duty all day long. Those under the influence of this particular magic will remain alert, observant, and vigilant for its duration. It is an ideal spell for those keeping watch. Several Glyphs of Warding are laid and these will be augmented with Alarm and Wyvern Watch spells.
Validar will spend most of the time inspecting the ballistae and their platforms and seeing if any of them are still functional, as well as checking their ammunition levels. This work also keeps him close to the battlements for when the scouts return.
None of the ballista will work in their present state. Three of them just need a good cleaning and fresh cord added to them to make them workable. Four others need to be repaired to be functional once more. Three other ballista platforms Sir Validar deems beyond repair.

Once all parties involved are ready, Sir Acerion, Argent, Chareos, Yusef, and anyone else who wishes to watch move into the Shrine of Heironeous. As instructed by his vision from Heironeous, Sir Acerion has Argent and Chareos cast Shocking Grasp. Small electrical bolts play around the mages hands upon the completion of the spell. Then the pair reaches up and touches the bolts of the Heironeous’ statues. The electricity shoots up the bolts, arcing as it goes. Reaching the top, the electricity leaps from the end of the bolt and strikes the observation hole in the wall. Nothing happens for a moment, and then the wall between the Shrine and the vault simply fades away. Before you, seated on top of a small stand is a Shield of Justice! It resembles a large shield, but made of stone bearing the lightning bolt symbol of Heironeous on it.

Unexpectedly, a burst of bright light emanates from the shield, forcing everyone to avert his or her eyes. A moment later you become aware of the ghostly apparitions that have haunted Fort Fletcher. They are moving into the Shrine, but they are not acting out their final moments have you have seen so many times over the last few days. The first of these ethereal figures walks into the light generated by the shield and vanishes.

The Priest of Heironeous who fell in this Shrine walks and stops before Sir Acerion. “You have saved us from this cursed existence, brother. For that we are in your eternal debt. May you fight with honor and valor.”

Turning, the priest joins the other specters and walks into the shields light. After a few minutes, the men who haunted Fort Fletcher are gone to their final rest. The bright light of the Shield of Justice fades as the last man enters. The fortress is haunted no more.

The dwarves venture into the mine tunnels that connect Hammerfall to Fort Fletcher. Rat accompanies them as he claims he likes to explore new things. Getting out of work back at the fortress is probably more like it.

The passage was mainly used to deliver coal to the Fortress. With the coal supplies running low it is necessary to find more. The equipment used by the dwarves in the past is still functional. Farian loads up the bins on the pulley and Aria moves it by hand. Grondar waits on the upper level and once a cart is full, pushes it to the drop off point in the fortress. The coal is dumped down the chute into the fortress and the cart returned to its starting position.

By the time Grondar returns with the empty cart, Farian and Aria have already filled the pulley up again. A bucket is propped underneath the pulley to keep it from moving while they load it. Aria works the pulley once more and the process is repeated. In just a few hours, the trio has supplied the fortress with enough coal to last a day.

With that task done, the dwarves turn their attention to the collapse further along in the supply tunnel. Turns out that Rat has been there and seems to have already made like his namesake and squeezed past the blockage! There is an opening, but it is still too small for the dwarves to pass through. Best guess would put the blockage about ten feet thick at the top of the pile.

Near midday the scouts are sent forth. Sir Acerion flies off on his Pegasus, while Argent and Chareos use fly spells. The snowstorm from yesterday has blanketed the pass. Only a few rocks poke through the seeming sea of snow. Visibility extends for several miles given the clear conditions.

Given the limited durations of their flight spells, both mages decide to fly forward for an hour or so before turning back. Sir Acerion weaves his way back and forth across the pass on his faster Pegasus. Dusk easily keeps pace with the mages. The owl flies so quietly that it is easy to forget that he is following.

The time limit is reached and there have been no signs of any living creature, let alone an advancing army. Sir Acerion moves a little further along as his Pegasus can easily catch back up with the mages. He too finds nothing but a snow-covered valley. Satisfied that the enemy is not near, Sir Acerion turns back.

Along the way back, Argent’s Fly spell gives out and the Invoker begins to fall from the sky well before the fortress is even in sight. Argent quickly casts Feather Fall and simply floats down to the snow below. Seeing this, Chareos casts his second Fly spell to ensure his safe arrival at the fortress.

Argent lands in the snow and sinks in. The snow is many feet deep here, but the Invoker is not enveloped by it. Chareos flies in to pick up Argent so that they can continue back to the Fortress. Just as he’s picking Argent up, the Invoker feels something brush against her leg. Looking back, neither mage can make out anything in the snow. Chareos rises up higher into the air, while Argent watches the snow below. There is no sign of life or movement down in the snow.

Apart from that one incident, the scouts are able to return to the fortress. There has been no sign of the orc horde that was supposed to be moving in this direction.

Sir Validar -

Early in the day, the Shield of Justice is recovered. Validar makes time to be present, as this is quite the important discovery for the group.

Seeing the ghostly apparitions head into the light from the piece of the Guardian Shield, Validar does not say much. After the process has ended and the light fades, Validar will step behind his fellow knight. "Well done, my friend. The Fortress is no longer haunted. Another of our tasks here has been completed."

"I find it interesting however, that the mages were required to enter the hidden area through the proper spell. Or does Heironeous also confer these specific abilities to his priests as well?" Validar will wait for the others to enter and then approaches the artifact. He places his gauntleted hand gently against its face for a moment as he considers the use of the Shield. "We are now half way to setting up the Guardian Shield in Ardelphia. This is a momentous day and one that will lead to strengthening the defenses of Cynalon throughout the western lands."

Later, Validar heads over to the ballista area after the scouts have departed from view. He begins to inspect each of the weapons. The elements have not been kind, nor has the attack on the Fortress that claimed it. Validar quickly realizes that none of the ballistas are currently useable.

Sherra seems to be lingering as well, which is fine with the Guardians' leader. "Do you have a particular interest in ballistas, Sherra? My barony makes the finest seige weapons in the kingdom. Even as neglected as they are, there are several of these that are ready for battle with as little as new firing cords."

He goes about checking what needs to be done to bring them back into working order. Three seem to be in fairly good shape and minor preparations should have them ready again. Four others will need repairs made. Validar notes what is needed for future supply deliveries as well as new firing cords for each of them. The remaining three will need to be replaced entirely. Validar notes this as well and puts in a request for 6 additional ballistas to replace the irreparable ones and to have extras.

In a few hours, Validar has basically completed the task and begun the initial steps of readying the working units, removing old, damaged firing cords, etc. When the troops arrive, they will be put back into order completely. Validar stops to note the need of more ballista bolts.

"My intention is to have the clerics put their continual light spells on as many of the ballista bolts as possible. For one thing, it will help to illuminate the area down below if we are attacked by the orcs or any other enemy for that matter. Secondly, it could be quite disconcerting to the normal troop to have glowing bolts shot out at them from the ramparts. In a seige, morale is what wins and loses the day."

A few moments later, Arocken arrives, running up to Validar. "The scouts have been spotted in the air. They are returning and all seem to be there," Arocken says quickly.

Validar moves over to one of the intact Ballista doors and opens it, as this is closer than heading all the way back to the tower. Stepping into the cold afternoon air, Validar scans the horizon. "There!", Arocken will state, his elven eyesight even more keen than Validar's sharply honed sight.

"Indeed, you are correct, my friend," Validar responds. "Come let us greet them and see if they encountered our enemy." Validar will close up the ballista door and head to the tower, awaiting their return and the information that they bring.

Yusef:

One of Yusef's tasks for the morning will be finding a couple of sealable bottles and using Fire Trap on them in the manner suggested by Argent. He will also coordinate with Lyonessa to reduce the furnace's consumption of fuel to a minimum. His Glyph of Warding will be placed wherever Argent determines.

Yusef will of course attend the opening of the wall in the Heironeous' temple; he has put too much time and effort into this project to do otherwise. He waits excitedly - not that anyone else can really tell with his calm demeanor - as the preparations are concluded. Argent and Chareos cast their spells and touch the statues' spears as shown in Acerion's vision. For several long seconds, it seems as though the attempt has failed; then, suddenly, the wall simply disappears! Yusef cannot help smiling at their success.

Then, the various phantoms from around the fort appear and merge into the light surrounding the shield. Apparently these trapped spirits have been freed. They have achieved two worthy goals this day.

Later, word comes that the flyers are returning. Yusef leaves off his cleaning duties to find out what they have learned.

Grondar:

Once his miracles for the day have been requested from Berronar, Grondar coordinates the specific locations and timings of his Wyvern Watch, Glyph of Warding and Squeaking Floors magics. Since the duration of the Weather Stasis is only 8 hours, Grondar will hold onto it. Hopefully, he will be able to cast it at the first sign of the weather turning worse. If the weather is still good when he goes to bed, he will cast it then. Of course, if Argent recommends a different strategy, he will bow to her expertise.

Busy as he is in the Hammerfall mine, Grondar misses the recovery of the Shield of Justice and the departure of the scouting party.

Over the course of a few hours, Aria, Farian and himself manage to provide about a day's worth of coal for the keep's furnaces. Turning back to the issue of the cave-in, they find that Rat is on the other side. "Rat? Are you okay?" Grondar calls softly though the hole that the halfling must have crawled through. Clearly, it is too tight for the dwarves. "What do you see out there?"

Grondar then turns back to Aria and Farian. "Perhaps we can widen this tunnel that Rat crawled through?" Hopefully between his and Aria's enhanced strengths, they can make the tunnel navigable by the entire group.

Lyonessa:

Like many of the others who arrive, Lyonessa watches quietly as the attempt to retrieve the Shield is going on. She stares in astonishment as the wall just disappears, revealing the Shield in the small room beyond. There is further reason for happiness upon seeing the restless apparitions go into the light given off by the Shield and then vanish. Truly a tale worth remembering unfolding before her this day!

He will also coordinate with Lyonessa to reduce the furnace's consumption of fuel to a minimum. His Glyph of Warding will be placed wherever Argent determines.

Together they decide the best way to coordinate the use of their spells. Lyonessa also casts her other spells as directed by Argent's original planning.

The remainder of the day, at least until word of the scout's return arrives, will be spent in prayer, helping in the kitchen or off in a partially-secluded room composing her next ballad.

Chareos

Taking Argent’s spell book to a quiet section of the fort Chareos sits down and begins studying the spell needed for the defense of the fort. Thankfully he figures the spell out quickly and commits two to memory along with his other spells.

Going to the two doors of the four Argent has pointed out Chareos casts his Wizard Lock on them, then Wizard’s Sympathy respectively on a lantern used by the guards and the other on a small bit of parchment. He soon turns in to bed. When he awakens he re-memorizes his Wizard Locks and Sympathy and goes about to seal the other two doors.

Later on in the day he is called to the Temple of Heironeous and greets the others. When the time is right he casts his Shocking Grasp spell and looks to Argent whose hand also plays about with electricity. He nods, as he goes to touch his Lightning Bolt. Arcs of electricity dance their way along the bolt then skip out to meet each other, Chareos watching in amazement as the wall simply vanishes.

Looking to the others present, Chareos smiles knowing their achievement when a light erupts from the shield room. Shielding his eyes from the light he squints from below his arm. The spirits make their way toward the shrine and the light beyond disappearing; he soon realizes what it means and smiles, as the spirits finally know freedom.
Chareos watches as Argent begins to plummet from the sky and quickly casts his other Fly spell on him. Spotting Argent soon after he sees her casting a Feather Fall and she soon sets down lightly in the snow. Banking into a deep dive Chareos goes to her aid, as he sees her to begin sinking into the snow.

Coming up on her he slows and picks her up in his arms so she is held in both arms. “I have you, “ he says reassuringly as he sets off to the sky again. “One of your beauty would be such waste on this barren landscape.” He finds the words coming across his lips before he realizes it and gives a blushing smile.

Though he looks at her face she is looking over his shoulder at the ground below. “What is it?” he asks curiously and casts a glance behind him, then faces forward.

Soon the Fortress comes into view and they soon touch down on the tower. He simply says, “Home sweet home,” as he sets Argent down.

After Sir Acerion, Argent and himself are safe within the walls Validar and Arocken approach wondering what news of their enemies. “I saw no enemy nor any sign of them,” he says evenly. “Though I did pick up a rare winter rose on our return.”

Farian

While shoveling coal into the buckets he begins to hum a familiar song from his early days. After a few hours of work there is enough coal to last for a time. With that accomplished they move off to inspect the cave-in a little more closely.

Looking at the pile he sees little footprints in the dirt and a hole in the upper part of the cave in.

“Halflings…,” he mutters under his breath, “Probably sleeping again. Or I’ll be a bearded gnome.”
Grondar then turns back to Aria and Farian. "Perhaps we can widen this tunnel that Rat crawled through?"
“Well I sure wouldn’t want a halfling to see a lost dwarven city before a dwarf!” he exclaims a little too loudly. Grabbing a shovel he begins to start shifting the loose dirt near the hole, being careful not to cause another cave-in.

His baritone voice grumbles out like grinding rock all the while making his work pass by quickly.
"Beneath the stone the metals gleam
Torches shine on silver streams
Beyond the eyes of the spying sun
In the mines of silver rivers run…"

Acerion:

Many of the companions gather around to watch as Argent and Chareos cast their spells. True to his granted vision, the far wall vanishes, revealing the small room and the Shield beyond. Suddenly, a burst of light from the Shield itself leaps forth, causing Acerion and the others to shield their eyes. Then the paladin becomes aware that the ghosts are moving towards the light. One, however, pauses next to him.

The Priest of Heironeous who fell in this Shrine walks and stops before Sir Acerion. “You have saved us from this cursed existence, brother. For that we are in your eternal debt. May you fight with honor and valor.”

"May you now know peace, brother," Acerion replies. "Heironeous waits to welcome you home." Acerion can not help but smile knowing what he was blessed to able to do. The Shield will be very important in the future, but the peace for these spectres that awaits them overshadows everything, at least at this moment.

“There is a way for me not to worry, my love,” Ivy says. “I have a spell called Sacred Guardian that I can cast upon you. The spell will alert me should you be in any danger. Unless the spell is triggered, then I will have no reason to worry.”

"If you wish it, then proceed My Lady," Acerion replies. "Knowing you will have peace of mind is most important to me."

"Nothing moves in this peaceful wintry slumber," Acerion says to himself, satisfied that there is no army anywhere nearby. Catching up to the mages, he spots Chareos as he dives down to pick up Argent. Everything seems fine, but Acerion keeps watch just the same. It seems merely that the spell durations ran out, but it doesn't hurt to be vigilant.

After Sir Acerion, Argent and himself are safe within the walls Validar and Arocken approach wondering what news of their enemies, “I saw no enemy nor any sign of them.” he says evenly, “Though I did pick up a rare winter rose on our return.”

Acerion smiles under his helmet at Chareos' last comment. Having not much more to add, the paladin still speaks up, "There was nothing that I could see that disturbed that snowfall, recent or otherwise. If anything lurks further out, it's going to take them quite some time to make any kind of progress."

Argent:
Sir Validar wrote:"That is all anyone can ask.
“In that regard, your request is a logical one, Sir Validar. Of course you may observe. Admittedly my knowledge of mass battlefield tactics is limited.”
Yusefl wrote:Yusef scratches his chin. "A great idea, Argent. I hadn't thought of that possibility. I will do what I can."
“Thank you, Yusef. For some mysterious reason, Fire Trap is a fourth level spell for us mages, but only second for priest. Hence why it is much easier for you priests to make use of the magic than I.”

Next morning, Chareos and I cast Shocking Grasp on the Heironeous statues bolts. The lightning shoots up the bolts and strikes the hole in the wall. After a beat the wall vanishes and the shield is revealed! The shield begins to glow and the phantasms move into it, vanishing into the afterlife. They are gone to their long overdue rest and the Fortress is no longer haunted.

That afternoon, I’m off to scout with Chareos and Sir Acerion. Dusk trails behind us almost unnoticed. The safe limit to the Fly spell is reached and we turn back. Alas, Tymora is not with me this day and the magic fades before reaching the fortress! But this eventuality has been prepared for and Feather Fall is quickly cast. The Invoker lands lightly in the fresh snow. Admittedly, she’d normally be rather annoyed by this, but thanks to her Boots of Warmth, the snow isn’t chilly at all! Now she’s beginning to understand why Kharyna dresses like she does while everyone else is shivering!

Fortunately, Chareos saw this happen and comes in for the rescue.
Chareos wrote:Coming up on her he slows and picks her up in his arms so she is held in both arms, “I have you. “ he says reassuringly as he sets off to the sky again, “One of your beauty would be such waste on this barren landscape.” finding the words coming across his lips before he realizes it and gives a blushing smile.
“Thanks. I’d just as soon not walk back the rest of the way to the fort. Why thank you for the compliment. That was a very nice thing to say.”
Argent lands in the snow and sinks in. The snow is many feet deep here, but the Invoker is not enveloped by it. Chareos flies in to pick up Argent so that they can continue back to the Fortress. “I’m not sure,” Argent admits. “Something brushed up against my leg, but it didn’t feel warm at all, so it probably wasn’t a creature. Maybe it was a branch or a rock covered by the snow. I can’t see anything down there.”
Chareos wrote:Soon the Fortress comes into view and soon touches down on the tower. He simply says “Home sweet home.” as he sets Argent down.
Argent will enjoy being carried back to the fortress. It’s been a while since a man has been this close to her for this length of time. Not since Crandor. Once back at the fortress, the men report into Sir Validar, so Argent has nothing to add.

Before heading off to the kitchen to help cook, Argent will kiss Chareos on the cheek. “Thanks for bringing me back safely. I’d best go help the others with dinner.”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Ivy:

Ivy joins many of the others up in the Shrine. She says a silent prayer right before the mages make their attempt to access the Shield of Justice. The spells are cast and Ivy involuntarily holds her breath waiting for something to happen. Her faith pays off and the way to the shield is revealed.

Then a bright light comes forth and Ivy is forced to look away. The spirits that had haunted the fort are drawn to the light. Their curse to guard the shield even beyond death has been broken. They are at long last free to go to their proper places in the afterlife. Tears of joy flow freely down Ivy’s cheeks and she’ll bless the spirits as they pass by.

Once they are gone and the light has faded, Ivy moves closer to the artifact of Heironeous. She can almost feel the goodness wafting off of it.

“Should we leave the shield here, or move it elsewhere? Can Sir Acerion carry it in battle, or can it only be used as part of the Guardian Shield?

"If you wish it, then proceed My Lady," Acerion replies. "Knowing you will have peace of mind is most important to me."
“Thank you,” Ivy will gratefully say. She then casts the Sacred Guardian spell.

Aria:

Aria is up early and dressed. The prospect of having some actual work to do pleases her. Far better to keep busy than just mulling around guarding a fortress!

The first order of business is to provide fuel for warmth. That task seems to go smoothly, even with having to work the pulley by hand. Had the stream still flowed, it would have been even easier.

Aria is surprised, but pleased, when Rat joins them as she’s hired the finder to help explore and scout out the dwarven lands. However, when work rears its head, the halfling is nowhere to be found! It’s soon discovered that Rat has squirmed through the tunnel and gone off to explore further.

“Blasted rodent!”, Aria curses. “I knew I should have put a leash on him!”

“Aye, lets widen the opening enough for Farian to pass through. The Wayfinder can go find our missing finder. Grondar and I will follow as quickly as we can.”

Sir Validar -

"I would like to be present when the discussions are held, if you do not mind my presence."

“In that regard, your request is a logical one, Sir Validar. Of course you may observe. Admittedly my knowledge of mass battlefield tactics is limited.”

"Thank you. No slight intended, but it has been my experience that few mages have such skills. Many magic-users seem to be either adventuring types or scholars; more independent and less military-minded. A true Battle Mage is a very rare and valuable entity. Most mages serve particular purposes on the field of battle, just as do cavalry, infantry, archers, etc. But it is often the same tactical leaders who direct the actions of each battlefield unit that lead the mages and priests."

Once they are gone and the light has faded, Ivy moves closer to the artifact of Heironeous. She can almost feel the goodness wafting off of it.

“Should we leave the shield here, or move it elsewhere? Can Sir Acerion carry it in battle, or can it only be used as part of the Guardian Shield?"

Ivy steps up next to Validar to admire the Shield of Justice. "I think we should leave it here for the moment, since it is safe. We will want to collect all four Shields that make up the Guardian Shield together, but for now, I see no reason to bring them to the same location until we are ready to put them to use. It may just be a cause for some enemy to try and steal them again."

Validar looks at the large stone shield. "Unless there is some magic that would not only lighten but also reduce the size of this shield I think it would be impossible to wield in any way. Whether it has any other abilities or enchantments is unknown at the moment. At least we were not provided with that information. Sir Acerion, do you have any other information to share about this artifact?"

"Apparently the four parts of the Guardian Shield were constructed a long time ago. I had not heard of the artifact before, which is not surprising since it was never put into place. The artifact was specifically created for the Ardel family so it must be no more than perhaps 200 or 300 years old at most. Stone Ridge is part of the Outer Kingdom afterall. It was separated and remains out of our hands. Although with the Shield of Protection safe in Corunglain and the Shield of Justice here, that is half of the artifact."

"We were told that the Shield of Magic is close to recovery. I take that to mean that it could be located in the Towers of Gaz that our friend Kharyna and her crew is exploring, although that is speculation. However, that would leave but one more Shield to recover; that of your faith, Ivy. The Shield of Life. Have you ever heard of such an artifact before? Do you know where it could be or what may have happened to it?"

The scouts are on their way back from their intial reconaissance mission. Validar is at the ramparts of the tower before they land. Arocken is right there beside him. Fortunately, he sees all three of them coming in, although Chareos is carrying Argent.

Soon the Fortress comes into view and they soon touch down on the tower. He simply says, “Home sweet home,” as he sets Argent down.

The three soon set down on the tower and Validar welcomes them back to the Fortress. "I am glad to see you all apparently well. How did the scouting mission fare?"

After Sir Acerion, Argent and himself are safe within the walls Validar and Arocken approach wondering what news of their enemies. “I saw no enemy nor any sign of them,” he says evenly. “Though I did pick up a rare winter rose on our return.”

"That is a bit dissapointing to hear," Validar responds. "I had hoped we would at least locate them. But what happened to Argent's flight ability? Did you not each take two of the power?"

Acerion smiles under his helmet at Chareos' last comment. Having not much more to add, the paladin still speaks up, "There was nothing that I could see that disturbed that snowfall, recent or otherwise. If anything lurks further out, it's going to take them quite some time to make any kind of progress."

"That at least is somewhat comforting, but I am afraid we cannot make any assumptions. Until we know that the enemy is elsewhere or is still on its way or somehow destroyed, we have to remain vigilant and prepared for every possible attack. At least the reinforcements will be arriving tomorrow and each day we are better prepared to withstand an enemy's attack."

"Prepare for another scouting mission tomorrow and be certain to have two Fly spells in memory for each of you mages, just to be certain. That should also give you more range to search. Also Sir Acerion, I would like you and Ivy to be present when Lord Sharadin arrives and the troops exit from the Stone House. I want to be certain there is no chance of any enemy infiltrating the soldiers."

"Now I wonder how the dwarves are faring?"

Chareos merely smiles in return, "I wouldn’t wish to walk back either, especially not in this weather.”
“I’m not sure,” Argent admits. “Something brushed up against my leg, but it didn’t feel warm at all, so it probably wasn’t a creature. Maybe it was a branch or a rock covered by the snow. I can’t see anything down there.”
“Oh.” Then, he quietly thinks to himself. “But What if it wasn’t a normal creature? Similar to an Ice elemental or the ice dragon we fought earlier. Those creatures wouldn’t be warm at all,” he states evenly.
Before heading off to the kitchen to help cook, Argent will kiss Chareos on the cheek. “Thanks for bringing me back safely. I’d best go help the others with dinner.”
His cheeks begin to turn crimson as he feels Argent kiss him, “It was my pleasure, my Lady. As she begins to walk away he calls out after her. “Would you care for some help?”

“Do you really think it wise?” he asks curiously. “We do not know if the vault will seal itself or even how to seal it if it cannot.” Realizing his error in judgment he goes on. “A Shocking Grasp spell may seal it, but it may not be safe here, with the coming battle. Perhaps it should be sent back with the stone cube or given to Sharadin to look over.”
"That is a bit dissapointing to hear," Validar responds. "I had hoped we would at least locate them. But what happened to Argent's flight ability? Did you not each take two of the power?"

“I did, and thankfully so. Without it one of us may not be standing here,” as he recalls his warnings to the noble.

“I am beginning to wonder if they would risk climbing the mountain to get here.” Thinking back to what the orcs were carrying Chareos bites his lip. His thoughts linger on the mirror for a moment, “What if the advance party were to signal the main force?” he asks curiously.

A sudden thought comes to him when speaking of the scouting trip. "Argent said she felt something brush her leg when she fell, though it was not warm. It could have been a branch or a rock, but what if it was something else, similiar to what we fought in the woods?" hinting at the ice creatures.
To serve and protect those who cannot.

Sir Validar -

"That is a bit dissapointing to hear," Validar responds. "I had hoped we would at least locate them. But what happened to Argent's flight ability? Did you not each take two of the power?"

“I did, and thankfully so. Without it one of us may not be standing here,” as he recalls his warnings to the noble.

"It was my understanding that you were each going to take two Flys in order to be safer and also to cover more ground. For tomorrow, we need to be clear that you should have two Fly spells each. There is much less risk in that and it also gives the ability to cover more area."

“I am beginning to wonder if they would risk climbing the mountain to get here.” Thinking back to what the orcs were carrying Chareos bites his lip. His thoughts linger on the mirror for a moment, “What if the advance party were to signal the main force?” he asks curiously.

"It is difficult to say what is happening without further information. The orcs and orogs were not forthcoming, nor would I expect them to be. Clearly we need to make as many preparations for any possible scenarios and contingencies as we can. That is also why we must be ready for more recon work tomorrow. The more we know the better we can defend this place."

A sudden thought comes to him when speaking of the scouting trip. "Argent said she felt something brush her leg when she fell, though it was not warm. It could have been a branch or a rock, but what if it was something else, similiar to what we fought in the woods?" hinting at the ice creatures.

"Yes, I would not be surprised if there were ice creatures being formed by the Cold Maiden. If Sir Corley is correct and she is martialing her forces, then we must be ready for all posibilities of attack there as well. Fortunately, this fortress is mostly enclosed, so we should be better suited to defend against the cold creatures that a typical castle."

Validar will ask all of the priests here which of the faiths holds the most sway over the weather. He has heard of someone named Silvanus, but is not certain if another deity would be more appropriate. Also whether there is a direct opponent to Auril? We may be able to request a priest of the proper deity to assist us when Lord Sharadin arrives.
