Elfquest #4

The elves are preparing to begin their journey to the Sylvan Ream. The night before they relax at a feast with Lord Sharadin and his daughters.
Talen wrote:He’ll seek out Uncle Sharadin when he has the time. “Excuse me, Uncle, but it seems that I can contribute to your Guild Spellbooks immediately. I have a spell that you do not have it. It is of second level and is called ‘Sky Hook’. The magic creates an immobile anchor point that you attach ropes too. One use would be to cast it over a chasm and attach ropes to swing across.”
“Very good, Talen. I’ll show you where to you can add your spell to our collection.”
Lia wrote:“Is this title appointed the king?” she asks curiously “I am sure your apprentices are more then capable and trained well enough to traverse many trails before them.”
“It typically is an appointed position, but the reality of the situation is that all of the kingdom’s archmages have come from our family line. So I guess it is a tradition. If I were to venture a guess, I would say that Sherwood would be my replacement, unless someone else exceptional came along.”
Lia wrote:“Perhaps the others could answer what I wish to ask you but I would have rather ask you. When I met you I could not help but notice your movements, confidant yet simple as well as your grip. I do not think mages would be so strong in the shoulders nor arms. Would I be wrong in assuming you were not always a mage?” she asks curiously. She will then ask him, “Why did you begin Adventuring? Or is it family honor and tradition that drove you?”
“You’re eyes do not deceive you. Mage does run strong in our family, but much like Sherwood, I choose to walk another path, at least at first. I cut my teeth as a warrior in my younger days before turning to spellcasting. My companions and I were battling the red dragon known as Ember when the cavern we were in collapsed. Both of us were plunged into a strange, magical pool. Both Ember and I were given the ability to easily learn and grasp the use of magic. Since that incident, I devoted myself to arcane studies, but still can handle myself with a sword.”

“As for why I started, out, I guess it’s probably a bit of both actually. Our family has spawned many fine individuals. Our bloodline dates back to the formation of this kingdom and to the royal family themselves. The time I grew up in was just after the Great War when much of the western kingdom was being overrun by humanoid hordes. Many of us could not just stand by and let this happened, so we took up weapons to drive the invaders back.”
Kylie wrote:"Ahh, so the guild doesn't predate the Company of the Sword's taking of the Keep. I didn't realize that; I just assumed you moved it here from somewhere else."

Kylie considers for a moment. "Sharing knowledge is a good approach. Hopefully, it will help those worthy mages associated with the guild to grow in power more quickly. From what I've seen in our travels, the world needs them."
“There are other guilds, the one in Elcadan being the most visibly, but they tend to be secretive sects. Ours is the first to be open when it comes to sharing knowledge and spells. We are also trying to create a lasting legacy. I will not be around forever and someone will have to take my place. Likewise others were be need to fulfill Jallarzi and Sherwood’s roles. Bringing along the next generation of mages is very important for the long term welfare of the kingdom.”

A good time is had by all at the feast. Kylie finds there is a subtle difference to the Feywine this time. With her elfin heritage opened up she can fully enjoy it. The feeling you get from the Feywine is not that different than what it feels like to be in Elfin lands. The wine warms you and makes you feel loved.

For Sherwood, however it doesn’t taste any different. The elf pendent gives him the appearance of an elf, but not the senses of one when it comes to Feywine. For that, he is still human.

Early next morning, the elves depart. Supplies were loaded the day before and everyone gets on board. The barge has one enclosed room on its deck, otherwise its wide open. Once everyone is ready, Sherwood sets the crown on his head. At his direction, the barge rises into the air and begins to accelerate. He directs the barge high into the air and above the cloud cover.

From this vantage point you can see much of the surrounding area. To the south lies a mostly forest covered area that used to be the old Keln lands. The mountains surrounding Karn’s Keep give way to hills and then to forest as the barge flies on a primarily eastern course.

The atmosphere inside the barge is quite comfortable. Coats are not required. There is also no breeze felt inside from the fast moving barge.

Mountains rise up once more and you can make out terrain features through the breaks in the clouds. Sherwood points out a city to the south that sits at the top of a small cliff. It is Gateway, the first Cynalonian city in the old Keln Lands.

The hours roll past as you continue on your flight. Mountains that are part of Rockhome pass below you. To the north you can make out a large mountain lake. Very few signs of civilization are seen in this part of Rockhome, just the occasional road.

The sun is beginning to set in the sky as Sherwood’s shift is nearing an end. The mage is obviously tired from the daylong exertion.

At last, the stark mountain ranges gives way to the Dorwynn Elfholds. You can see the great elfin forest laying below in the fading daylight. Sherwood pilots the barge to just past the mountains and sets down in a hilly region between the Elfholds and Rockhome. A small fort is noted a few miles to the south.

GM Notes:

That completes the first voyage on the barge. Sherwood set you down in the lands to the North of Crossroads. The fort is Fort Hobart and it is in Cynalonian territory. This area is mostly a buffer zone between the elves and the dwarves. Humanoids frequently raid here, but that’s most in the north.
During a practice session with the Crown, Kylie pulls out her bow to see if she can still shoot accurately while controlling the barge.
This is possible.

Ready to take off again for the overnight flight, or do you want to get out and stretch your legs a bit?

Continue your discussions from Karn’s Keep as well.

Now what?

Sherwood:
Lia wrote:When the prospect of rotations come up Lia tells Sherwood, "I may have something that could help with the watch shift." Taking a statue of a lioness from her waist pouch, " With this I can summon two lioness to aid me. We could use the extra eyes,” she surmises
“How interesting,” Sherwood answers. “I have a similar magic item myself, although mine is what is called an elephant. Do these lions have time limits to how long they can be used and how often they can be summoned?”
Kylie wrote:Kylie wears her nicest outfit for the feast, though it's actually quite plain compared to the outfits Argent is given to wearing. She does use Argent's trick of accentuating her appearance subtly using cantrips. For some reason, for the first time, she is really starting to want to be seen as a mature woman.
Sherwood smiles when he sees Kylie at the feast. “Looks like someone is growing up right before my very eyes.”
For Sherwood, however it doesn’t taste any different. The elf pendent gives him the appearance of an elf, but not the senses of one when it comes to Feywine. For that, he is still human.
Knowing the strong effects of the Feywine, Sherwood will just have that one sip. A bad hangover is not something he needs in the morning.

The great journey begins. Flying the barge is exhilarating at first, but then comes tedious as the hours pass. The strain begins to show, as the day grows long. Night isn’t too far off and Sherwood lands before darkness completely sets in.

“I’m beat,” Sherwood says after landing. “I need to get some sleep, so the next phase of this trip is all in your hands.”

Removing the Crown, Sherwood offers it to Lilia.

“My advice is to follow the edge of the Elfholds so that if you need to land you can find one quickly. Keep the Elfholds to your left and you should do fine. Laucian is in charge while I’m resting. Be careful.”
I do what is necessary.

Lilia:

The Elf Maiden will hold regular language lessons, but does not let them drag on for hours. After all, she wants time to do some reading herself. The time during the flights on the barge when Sherwood is in control is a good opportunity for this. Lilia will start sprinkling in Alphatian words into her common speech while around the two.
Kylie & Talen wrote:Kylie smiles at Talen, who ended up sitting across from her, and adds a bit to Laucian's explanation. "As I understand it, it is a type of wine made only by elves. Apparently, its potency is such that non-elves do not tolerate it well, physically. I tried a sip once, and it was truly delicious, but being only half-elven, I was glad I hadn't tried to drink more."
Lilia enjoys the feast and the elfin wine fully. “Only halflings have the refinement to fully enjoy the subtleties of Feywine. Other races only end up deeply intoxicated from it,” Lilia adds.

Lilia is ready to depart when the time comes. She’s been preparing herself for the duties to come by staying up later and pushing her sleeping time closer to morning. The flight is a unique experience at first. She marvels at the sight of the world below them from this great height. Only from up here can she truly appreciate just how big the world is.

Near the end of the day, the Elfholds come into view and Lilia feels as if she is approaching home. Sherwood lands and appears exhausted from his day’s effort.
Sherwood wrote:Removing the Crown, Sherwood offers it to Lilia.

“My advice is to follow the edge of the Elfholds so that if you need to land you can find one quickly. Keep the Elfholds to your left and you should do fine. Laucian is in charge while I’m resting. Be careful.”
“I will do as you suggest, Sherwood Elf-Friend.”

Turning to Laucian she will ask, “Should we take off right away or do you wish to remain here for a time?”
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

Laucian wrote:Laucian nods as Valena explains the limitation of her skill, "Even though you would fail more times then not, I would wager you could place several arrows closer to that arrow then most. I would not wish to be within your target sight." he evenly states with all seriousness
“I wouldn’t wish for you to be within my target sights,” Valena answers with equal seriousness. “That would mean that we would be at odds and I cannot imagine such a thing happening.”
Kylie wrote:"That makes sense," Kylie replies, "the more you focus on one thing, the less you learn of others. And some advice and guidance would be wonderful; I don't expect to match your level of skill, I just would like to improve mine."
“I will do what I can, Kylie Feador.”

Valena takes a position near the front of the barge as our flight begins. She’s amazed at the view from high in the sky! The land seems so small…

After the thrill subsides and tedium sets in, Valena will work on her bow maintenance. She’ll clean her bow and inspect her arrows. This will become a daily ritual for her, apart from her other duties.

She feels joy rising in her as the Elfholds come into sight. Walking up to Kylie, Valena will point off into the distance.

“This is the eastern edge of the Elfholds. Our clan hold is not that far away. Perhaps fifty miles or so. It would be near that area there.”

The clan hold can’t be seen through the thick canopy of forest, but Valena is confident that she knows where it is.

The barge lands and Sherwood hands the Crown off to Lilia and puts Laucian in charge.

“Laucian, I can either take a guard shift now, or sleep so that I can takeover during the night. Which do you prefer?”

Talen:

Laucian wrote:"If you would care to learn, I would be glad to show you." he says observes the young half elf. "Then perhaps you can see if your choice was the wise one."
“I would like at least to give it a try,” Talen answers. “To discover the advantages first hand.”
Kylie wrote:After they decide that Kylie and Talen will learn Alphatian together from Lilia, she pulls out a book and jumps right in. Talen seems thrown off a bit by this, and Kylie feels much the same. "Ah... take good notes, please, Talen," Kylie asks, "I think we'll both be needing them..."
“I will, I promise.”

Talen spends much of his time adding new magicks to his meager spellbook. So many new and interesting spells for him to try out! He’s dragged away from his studies to attend the feast thrown by his Uncle Sharadin.
“WOW!”, Talen mumbles, stunned by the vision of loveliness before him. He wisely keeps his mouth shut to avoid making a fool out of himself again.
Laucian & Talen wrote:Hearing Talen's question he says, "It is a wine of our people. It is said to be made of crushed flowers, honey, and distilled moonbeams. I would be careful of how much you drink, it has a habit of sneaking up on you."

Kylie smiles at Talen, who ended up sitting across from her, and adds a bit to Laucian's explanation. "As I understand it, it is a type of wine made only by elves. Apparently, its potency is such that non-elves do not tolerate it well, physically. I tried a sip once, and it was truly delicious, but being only half-elven, I was glad I hadn't tried to drink more."
“That’s amazing!”, Talen will say eyeing the wine in his goblet. “Truly there is much that I don’t know about my heritage.”

He’ll take a sample sip and enjoy the wine.

“Most wondrous! I never realized just what a blessing it was to be an elf! To enjoy this fine nectar and feel the power of an Elfin forest. All the more reason for our mission to succeed!”

The feast ends much too soon and Talen finds himself too excited to sleep properly that night. Fortunately, he does not need much sleep, so he is still refreshed come the dawn.

The trip is exciting at first, but then it becomes commonplace. He tries keep his eyes open for trouble but his mind wanders after a time. Finally the trip comes to and end and Sherwood is visibly worn out from his use of the Crown.

“Sleep well, cousin, we’ll keep an eye on things while you slumber.”

Nariya:

Laucian feels the strain of the keep leave his body as he walks about in the courtyard. The bite of winter is diminished by the women standing beside him. As she asks him about his younger years he pauses for a second then says, “I was orphaned at an early age when an orc raiding party came across my villiage. My mother, in her last hours, came to a temple of Ehlonna and asked for sanctuary. I was raised there for sometime and felt Ehlonna’s call to her.”

Nariya feels a twinge of pain for Laucian's loss. "That must have been difficult," she says softly. "I am glad that your mother was able to find safety for you. Now you are blessed with the warmth of your goddess and the kindness of those who took you in."

“Our traditions range differently among are clan, Coloring of the skin to honor those before you, and perhaps one day if you are worthy enough they will honor you. There is also tradition among are people when one comes of age they choose a name to identify them away from the clan. Nailo is the name I have chosen. It means ‘NightBreeze’ in elvin tongue.

"That sounds similair to what my people do, although it would seem that we have several more reasons for decorating our bodies," Nariya replies. "NightBreeze is a very good name," she says, her eyes lingering on his.

Laucian soon asks similar questions about her past, as well as her homeland. Time seems to pass far to quickly when he is with Nariya but doesn’t point this out.

"The forest my people call home is quite large, although not nearly the size or power of what I experienced earlier," Nariya admits. "Our homes and lifestyles are very simple, with the only permanent buildings nestled in the trees. Many of my people do not stay however, choosing rather to venture out, whether as scouts and path finders like myself or dealing with the nearby human towns. Enough of us stay though so there is always someone to greet those when they return."

"Our people are also very religious, as most are I imagine," Nariya continues. "Although we praise many, my patron is Solonor." Pointing to her tattoo across her eyes, "All of us once we prove ourselves to be scouts and hunters decorate ourselves to show our dedication. Those who follow other gods adorn and decorate themselves appropriately."

Upon leaving the feast Laucian will express his thanks to Sharadin as well then turn and follow the others to the dorms. Uphead he sees Nariya walking alone and quickly catches up with her. Smiling down at her Laucian says, “I enjoyed our time together earlier,” taking her hand and lightly kissing it, “I hope we can do it again sometime soon.”

"As did I," Nariya replies, smiling as Laucian takes her hand. "Anytime you wish it," she replies to his last words.

Nariya looks with some wonderment as the clouds roll by beneath her. It is an experience unlike anything she could have dreamnt up. Feeling no wind is strange and if differs so greatly from riding a winged animal. She keeps an eye out for anything that might bother them, but spots nothing.

Eventually she begins to tire of the scenery, gazing down at the land she should be covering on foot. all of those missed opportunities to find truly marvelous sights and forgotten places Nariya thinks. With a bit of a sigh, she maintains watch until they set down for the evening.

Sherwood looks exhausted and soon excuses himself, leaving a few plans in place before finding sleep. Nariya takes the moment to stretch her legs, quickly scouting the area where they landed. Not sure if they will be leaving again soon, she returns after but a few moments unless she finds something worth investigating.
Put away that silly map, city-boy. I know a faster way.

Laucian nods in agreement with the half elf walks forward with him. Taking his bow from his quiver he holds it before him, ‘Watch what I do, then you try.” stepping up to the target he slowly goes through the motions of knocking an arrow, aiming and drawing the bow. With great ease he holds his aim as he says. “You have to pull the bow almost even with your eye so you can properly align the shaft with your intended target. The further you wish to fire you raise the bow slightly. Then when you are comfortable release your fingers evenly and… *thud* hopefully you hit what you wished to.”

Handing his bow to Talen he will say “Take your time, I’ll correct what your doing wrong as we go.”

Valena wrote
-“I wouldn’t wish for you to be within my target sights,” Valena answers with equal seriousness. “That would mean that we would be at odds and I cannot imagine such a thing happening.”
“Nor I.” he says and lets the matter end at that.

Taking to the sky Laucian looks out on the landscape below with bow in hand feeling as though he is truly free. As the feeling becomes old in time Laucian sits down and begins making arrows for his bow.
Sherwood wrote

A look of surprise comes to his face as Sherwood leaves him in charge. “Are you sure you wish me to lead in your stead?” he asks having little experience doing such. As he watches Sherwood depart. “ I will do my best in your absence.”

Thinking about the situation at hand Laucian is quiet for a few moments then speaks. “Take a few moments to stretch you legs. Then we will be leaving. I do not wish to lay out in the open for long.

“I think it would be best if we make camp for the night after Lilia’s shift. Turning he will ask Lilia, “Is the safety of the Elfholds within our reach or is it to vast a distance?” If her calculations put us close to the Elfholds Laucian will say. “Then let us go for time is against us.” (Do as Sherwood suggested though Land within the borders of the Elfholds when Lilia’s shift is up.

“Valena, take your rest now if you would. You have been most vigilant thus far in our journey. I will wake you when it is time. I will take first watch with Talen and perhaps Nariya, Lia, Kylie and Valena the second leg of the shift. That should give us enough eyes for both legs of this run.”

With Nariya-
Nariya feels a twinge of pain for Laucian's loss. "That must have been difficult," she says softly. "I am glad that your mother was able to find safety for you. Now you are blessed with the warmth of your goddess and the kindness of those who took you in."
“I do not remember much of that day, only what the priests wished to tell me of it.” he says thoughtfully, “Aye that is true, and the companionship of friends and acquaintances.” he says with a playful grin as he looks her in her eyes.
"That sounds similair to what my people do, although it would seem that we have several more reasons for decorating our bodies," Nariya replies. "NightBreeze is a very good name," she says, her eyes lingering on his.
‘Thank you
.” with a fleeting smile, as he notices just how beautiful her eyes are. Taking a chance he leans his head closer to her noticing her eyes sparking as he draws closer. Placing a light kiss upon her lips.

"The forest my people call home is quite large, although not nearly the size or power of what I experienced earlier," Nariya admits. "Our homes and lifestyles are very simple, with the only permanent buildings nestled in the trees. Pointing to her tattoo across her eyes, "All of us once we prove ourselves to be scouts and hunters decorate ourselves to show our dedication. Those who follow other gods adorn and decorate themselves appropriately."

Laucian listens intently upon her explaination of her tattoos and customs, taking great interest in them. “One day I would like to see your forest as well as your clan. There is much to learn about your people, and more so yourself.” Curiously he asks, “Do you have Ehlonna’s priests mong your people? What marking do they carry?”

"As did I," Nariya replies, smiling as Laucian takes her hand. "Anytime you wish it," she replies to his last words.

“Then we would have little else to occupy our time. Because I would wish it quite often.” he says with a playful smile.

“That is amazing. Perhaps Talen will follow in your footsteps as well.” she says hopefully.

“You’re eyes do not deceive you. Mage does run strong in our family, but much like Sherwood, I choose to walk another path, at least at first. Lia listens of the family history as well as Sharadin’s past. “Amazing!” is all she can say as she tries to register the vastness of what she has heard.

“How interesting,” Sherwood answers. “I have a similar magic item myself, although mine is what is called an elephant. Do these lions have time limits to how long they can be used and how often they can be summoned?”

An El…fant?” she stumbles with the word, “ I have called upon Sasha and Misha a few days in a row. So I would imagine I could do so everyday. Though Sasha did perish in a skirmish before the statue was mine. My mother could not call them both forth for about a week.” she recalls vaguely. (Unsure if this is right? If one dies can you still call forth one. Or have to wait the week for both again.)

Later on Lia will say to Talen, “Seems you have your work cut out for you, brother. Did you know our family has produced several Archmages of the kingdom?”

Lia looks about the landscape as the barge takes flight. Looking over the edge she mutters, ‘Never before Have I felt so small.” stepping back as she begins to get light headed.

If I were to venture a guess, I would say that Sherwood would be my replacement, unless someone else exceptional came along.”
Sharadin's statement surprises Kylie somewhat. "Is the archmage always male?" she asks. "Otherwise, I would think that Jallarzi would be a candidate too; she is related to you as well."

As Sharadin relates his history, Kylie listens closely. "So you did not have a talent for magic before you fell in that pool? Or did it just enhance what was already there?"
Sharadin wrote:“There are other guilds, the one in Elcadan being the most visibly, but they tend to be secretive sects.
Kylie nods. "I think I understand. This would then seem to be the best mage guild to belong to. I doubt I will ever be as skilled or powerful as Jallarzi, but maybe I can help someone else get there."
Valena wrote:“I will do what I can, Kylie Feador.”

"That is all I can ask, Valena. And any efforts will be greatly appreciated."
Sherwood wrote:“How interesting,” Sherwood answers. “I have a similar magic item myself, although mine is what is called an elephant. Do these lions have time limits to how long they can be used and how often they can be summoned?”
Lia wrote:An El…fant?” she stumbles with the word, “ I have called upon Sasha and Misha a few days in a row. So I would imagine I could do so everyday. Though Sasha did perish in a skirmish before the statue was mine. My mother could not call them both forth for about a week.” she recalls vaguely.
Kylie laughs upon overhearing this conversation. "I have one too. Mine turns into a giant dragonfly, which I can ride. It seems to be more limited in its use, though."

The feast proves to be very enjoyable, and is likely to be the last such pleasant time until they return - if they do. The feelings engendered by the feywine remind Kylie strongly of her recent visit to the Elfholds, and a tear runs down her cheek.
Sherwood wrote:Sherwood smiles when he sees Kylie at the feast. “Looks like someone is growing up right before my very eyes.”

Kylie looks at Sherwood and smiles. "May wonders never cease," she replies with a twinkle in her eye.
Talen wrote:“WOW!”, Talen mumbles, stunned by the vision of loveliness before him. He wisely keeps his mouth shut to avoid making a fool out of himself again.
The sudden utterance from Talen catches Kylie's ear, but only partially. Unsure what he said, and whether or not it was positive leaves her feeling a bit uncertain. Thus, she doesn't go out of her way to speak with him.
Lilia wrote:Lilia enjoys the feast and the elfin wine fully. “Only halflings have the refinement to fully enjoy the subtleties of Feywine. Other races only end up deeply intoxicated from it,” Lilia adds.
Kylie thinks for a moment. "I do seem to recall Master Rat having some at that inn in Rifflian and enjoying it without ill effects. There must be some connection between halflings and elves for this to be true, I would think."
Talen wrote:“That’s amazing!”, Talen will say eyeing the wine in his goblet. “Truly there is much that I don’t know about my heritage.”

"I believe we are both in the same boat in that regard, Talen. I am only starting to learn of the culture from which my mother descended. There seems quite a lot to learn, yet the more I learn, the closer I feel to her."

After a good sleep, Kylie rises to make her final preparations for their departure. She dresses in her usual travel clothing and packs up all her gear. After breaking her fast with the others, which she will prepare if it isn't already done, Kylie goes aboard the barge and finds a place to stow her backpack.

Almost immediately they take off, with Sherwood wearing the Crown. Despite having practiced with the Crown, Kylie is still amazed at the comfort and lack of sensation of movement aboard. It is almost as if the world were moving and they were holding still. Most extraordinary!

As they are over what she generally considers friendly territory, Kylie divides her attention between the wonder of the land passing below, Lilia's language instruction and her magical studies. It amazes her that she can actually feel the Elfholds getting closer as they near the great elven homeland. That maternal warmth slowly grows in her as though she were near her mother.

The day passes slowly, but eventually they land as Sherwood tires. He passes command to Laucian as he retires for some sleep, so all turn to the woodsman for instructions. Laucian decides to press on, with a rest planned for the end of Lilia's shift with the Crown.

Laucian assigns her to the second watch, so Kylie decides she had better get some rest beforehand. Once they are back in the air, she finds a place to sleep and settles in until awakened for her shift.

Karn's Keep:

Lia wrote:"That is amazing. Perhaps Talen will follow in your footsteps as well." she says hopefully.
"Perhaps someday," Sharadin agrees.
Kylie wrote:Sharadin's statement surprises Kylie somewhat. "Is the archmage always male?" she asks. "Otherwise, I would think that Jallarzi would be a candidate too; she is related to you as well."
"Not always," Sharadin explains. "The second Archmage of the Kingdom was a woman, a most unusual woman at that. She was Renee Scully, first child of the original Archmage James. Renee was exceptionally bright and was aged in an incident that has never been fully explained. She went from being a small child to an adult overnight. Most found her peculiar, from what I've read. She served as the Archmage for many decades and then simply vanished without a trace. She never married or had children. Her fate remains a mystery to this day."

"Jallarzi is a fine mage and an excellent instructor. Her sole weakness is application of spells in the heat of battle, which is something that places Sherwood ahead of her. Mystra seems to have another role in mind for Jallarzi anyway. Your friend Kharyna has been tasked with clearing Gaz's Towers. Those towers were supposed to have been the place where Mystra's Tower of Magic was to be. The Tower of Magic is the prime temple to Mystra. It will be a place for priests and mages to be instructed in the use of Mystra's gifts. Once this is accomplished, Jallarzi will be one of the instructors there."
Kylie wrote:As Sharadin relates his history, Kylie listens closely. "So you did not have a talent for magic before you fell in that pool? Or did it just enhance what was already there?"
"Magical talents run strong in my family, so I would have to assume that they were already there. Most likely the pool just enhanced what was there. This same enhancement has been passed on to my daughters."
Kylie wrote:Kylie nods. "I think I understand. This would then seem to be the best mage guild to belong to. I doubt I will ever be as skilled or powerful as Jallarzi, but maybe I can help someone else get there."
"As long as all the members are orientated on the same goal. That's why we are particular about just who joins."

Traveling:

Sherwood's twelve-hour shift controlling the barge has come to an end. He sets it down in the small strip of land that separates Rockhome from the Elfholds. It is a mostly barren and hilly region between the mountains and the great elfin forest.

After a short time on the ground, Lilia dons the Crown and directs the barge up into the air once more. She does not make the craft fly as high as Sherwood did; instead she has the barge go high enough to safely pass over the elfin forest. Night has fallen, but the night is clear. The elves feel their connection to the Elfholds once more.

Deeming that their Clanhold is within reach, Lilia flies toward their home village: Ainsun. The night passes by and those sleeping and those on guard duty are swapped as the hours and the forest below roll past. Finally the sky begins to brighten once more and you can see much better.

Through the thick canopy of forest, Laucian spots what he believes to be the River of Monsters, a river that flows near Ainsun. Lilia begins to tire just as Ainsun comes into view. She pilots the barge to land on the River of Monsters and directs it up to the docks. Numerous other riverboats and barges can be seen.

Ainsun is a small elfin town with a population of about 500. Much of the town citizens dwell in houses amongst the trees. The few structures on the ground are more business orientated.

There is a modest logging industry in Ainsun. Old, ancient trees are cleared and new saplings are planted in their place. Much of the branches and foliage are used in everyday life in Ainsun, with the logs themselves are shipped down river to Alfheim. Ainsun has a homey, woodsy feeling to it.

GM Notes:

You've arrived in Ainsun, the Clanhold for the Grunalf's. It is the home of Lilia. The temple that Laucian grew up in is located further to the north near Black Lake. Lilia is just as exhausted from her night of piloting the barge as Sherwood was. It is early morning here in Ainsun.

Jallarzi and her destiny at the Tower of Magic was a subject that came up during New Frontiers #40. The Dark One tried to tempt her be setting her up has the director of the Tower.

Sharadin's encounter with Ember was first discussed way back in The Frontier #101.

I added a fantastic map I found for the Elfholds in the private section. There's great site that has many maps for the world that I use. It can be found here. http://pandius.com/atlas.html. Many things have been changed in this world from what they are depicted on their maps, but for the most part the geography is the same.

Now what?

Sherwood:
Lia wrote:An El...fant?" she stumbles with the word, " I have called upon Sasha and Misha a few days in a row. So I would imagine I could do so everyday. Though Sasha did perish in a skirmish before the statue was mine. My mother could not call them both forth for about a week." she recalls vaguely.
Kylie wrote:Kylie laughs upon overhearing this conversation. "I have one too. Mine turns into a giant dragonfly, which I can ride. It seems to be more limited in its use, though."
“Interesting,” Sherwood nods upon hearing the comments. “The elephant seems a bit different. I can call upon it for an entire day, but only once a week at best. It seems that each figurine has its own set of rules and regulations.”
Laucian wrote:A look of surprise comes to his face as Sherwood leaves him in charge. "Are you sure you wish me to lead in your stead?" he asks having little experience doing such. As he watches Sherwood depart. " I will do my best in your absence."
“You’re the most experienced here, Laucian. You’ll do fine.”

Exhausted from his use of the Crown Sherwood quickly falls asleep after the change over. Early the next morning he wakes and quickly tries to gather his wits. Dawn is still a few hours off and it appears that they are flying over the Elfholds. He is told that Lilia believed she could reach Ainsun before the end of her shift. A friendly port is always a good place to land, so Sherwood just nods his understanding.

After a quick meal, he turns to the task of replacing his spells to power the Crown for the next leg of the journey. It’s still dark out, so Sherwood uses his pendant to take the form of an elf. At least he gains elfin nightvision this way, but he also realizes that he’s not going to be ready to take over when the time comes.

Dawn comes and its clear that Lilia is tiring. Laucian spots the river near Ainsun and the town comes into sight not long after that. The barge lands in the river and docks at the small town.

“My friends, I’ve miscalculated somewhat. I still have several hours of studying before I would be ready to control the barge again. With the amount of sleep I require and the amount of time it takes me to memorize all of my spells, I’ll be unable to alternate every day with Lilia. At best I’d be able to take every third shift. Kylie you’re going to have to pilot the barge some of the time now.”

“Since we’re in a town, we might was well spend a few hours here and relax before continuing on. Let’s meet back here early this afternoon. I’ll remain with the barge and continue to study. Go and enjoy yourselves.”
I do what is necessary.

Kylie wrote:Kylie thinks for a moment. "I do seem to recall Master Rat having some at that inn in Rifllian and enjoying it without ill effects. There must be some connection between halflings and elves for this to be true, I would think."
“As I stated, halflings enjoy the finer things in life. Feywine is no exception.”

After the excitement of the first voyage fades, Lilia will continue her language lessons.

Pointing up she’ll say, “Thaet ski ben bleu. The sky is blue.”

Ure aron verai heah uppe. We are very high up.”

When the great elfin forest comes into sight, Lilia say to her charges, “What does this mean? Thaet Dorwynn Elvenehulu.”
Laucian wrote:"I think it would be best if we make camp for the night after Lilia's shift. Turning he will ask Lilia, "Is the safety of the Elfholds within our reach or is it to vast a distance?" If her calculations put us close to the Elfholds Laucian will say. "Then let us go for time is against us."
“I think I can make it to Ainsun,” Lilia states. “It would be nice to see home again. Although I believe the plan was to land, switch pilots, and then continue on again.”
Lilia is beginning to feel the strain of using the Crown when Laucian makes his discover.

“Thank the All-Father!” Lilia says wearily. “I don’t know how much longer I can last. I never imagined that this would be so tiring.”

Home comes into view and Lilia brings the barge down to the water. She continues to use the Crown to maneuver the barge up to the town docks.
Sherwood wrote:“My friends, I’ve miscalculated somewhat.
Lilia also didn’t consider the amount of time that humans require to sleep. That coupled with the many more spells that Sherwood can memorize, it will take him longer than the twelve-hour span between shifts.

Although weary, Lilia will say, “I should still be able to do every other shift as planned. I do not require as much sleep and I have this Talisman of Memorization. I really never considered it to be of great value before, but now it is. I estimate that it would take me less than eight hours to prepare myself for the next shift. So if you can Kylie can trade off, then we should be able o continue our journey all day and all night.”
Sherwood wrote:“Since we’re in a town, we might was well spend a few hours here and relax before continuing on. Let’s meet back here early this afternoon. I’ll remain with the barge and continue to study. Go and enjoy yourselves.”
“Thank you,” Lilia gratefully states. “I’ll be nice to sleep in my own bed for a change.”

Lilia will make her way to her home to enjoy some sleep. After waking, Lilia will pick up a few things before returning to the barge. Some extra clothes would be nice as the ones she’s been wearing while away are showing wear. She’ll stop at the market and pick up some elfin trail mix that she’s so fond of. After that she’ll return to the barge and begin to memorize her spells for her next shift.
Either by my magic or my bow you WILL fall!

I will take first watch with Talen and perhaps Nariya, Lia, Kylie and Valena the second leg of the shift. That should give us enough eyes for both legs of this run."
“As you wish,” Valena states as she goes to her bedroll for a nap. The barge continues and she feels the joy of being in her homeland once more. She falls asleep with a smile on her face.

After rising to relieve the others, the rest of the night passes without incident. She learns that they are trying to reach Ainsun, the elfin village where Lilia and Laucian are from. Morning comes and they reach their destination safely.

“Very nice,” Valena compliments upon seeing Ainsun. It’s not as large as my home in Feador, but one could feel quite at home here.”

Turning to Laucian she’ll say, “Is your temple close by? I would like to properly pay my respects to the Lady of the Forests.”

Talen:
Laucian wrote:Laucian nods in agreement with the half elf walks forward with him. Taking his bow from his quiver he holds it before him, 'Watch what I do, then you try." stepping up to the target he slowly goes through the motions of nocking an arrow, aiming and drawing the bow. With great ease he holds his aim as he says. "You have to pull the bow almost even with your eye so you can properly align the shaft with your intended target. The further you wish to fire, you raise the bow slightly. Then when you are comfortable release your fingers evenly and... *thud* hopefully you hit what you wished to."

Handing his bow to Talen he will say "Take your time, I'll correct what your doing wrong as we go."
Talen gingerly takes Laucian’s bow in hand. He’s more nervous about not damaging his beautiful weapon then firing it! Doing as instructed, Talen draws a shaft back.

“This is very different,” he notes. “I can feel the pressure on muscles I don’t normally use. It feels as if there is more power in this kind of missile. Longer range I would assume?”

Firing the missile, Talen completely misses the target and hits the wall behind it.

“I’m beginning to see the attraction of this weapon. It’s nothing like my crossbow!”
Lia wrote:Later on Lia will say to Talen, "Seems you have your work cut out for you, brother. Did you know our family has produced several Archmages of the kingdom?"
“Wow! That’s amazing! Alas, I fear I will never reach that level of skill, sister. My magical skills are marginal at best.”

Talen gets excited as the Elfholds come into view once more. He finds it uncompressible that his grandmother’s people would abandon it and dwell deep within the bowels of the earth.
Lilia wrote:When the great elfin forest comes into sight, Lilia say to her charges, “What does this mean? Thaet Dorwynn Elvenehulu.”
“Uhm,” Talen utters being caught of guard. “Thaet—-- we had that word before. The! The! It must be The Dorwynn Elfholds!”

Talen finds the elfin village to be charming. It seems homey and pleasant.
Sherwood wrote:“My friends, I’ve miscalculated somewhat. I still have several hours of studying before I would be ready to control the barge again. Laucian

Laucian smiles a smirk as Talen holds his bow so gingerly but doesn’t mention it. “Aye, that is the Pull strength of the bow. Normal Longbows have a long range of about 200 yards. This bow is much more special Talen. You will not find many like it. It is known as the Hunter’s bow, Blessed and given to me by Ehlonna herself. I have hit Wyrvens at about 400 yards with it."

Also a part of one's training with the bow is to defend yourself with it till you can draw another weapon. Most archers do not care to do so as there bows are an extention of themselves but it is a good skill to learn.

“If you would like we could see if the armory has a longbow we can purchase. Or perhaps I could make you one. Which ever is more toward your liking.”
“I think I can make it to Ainsun,” Lilia states. “It would be nice to see home again. Although I believe the plan was to land, switch pilots, and then continue on again.”
“Aye that was the plan Lilia., and I do not plan on deviating from it much. Master Sherwood suggested we gather what supplies we can along the way if able. I see no reason why we cannot stop in friendly territory to do so, as there will not be places as such further on in our journey.”

And soon they are off again nothing of great interests happens within the first 4 hours of the leg so Laucian wakes Valena soon after and prays, then turns in for the night. As he wakes he gathers his gear and sees Sherwood up and about. Approaching his fellow ranger he says, “I trust you slept well. I thought it would be wise to see if we could not make the switch within the safety of the Elfholds. Lilia believes we can make it to Anisun and so we shall try. It will also give us a chance to gather whatever we may have forgotten at Karn’s keep, if there is any. I hope this is ok.” he states evenly.

Standing up he gathers his bow and steps to begin looking out again. As he looks a familiar sight comes into view, “I think that is the river of Monsters in the distance!!” Seeing Lilia begin to tire Laucian asks, “Can you make it?
“Thank the All-Father!” Lilia says wearily. “I don’t know how much longer I can last. I never imagined that this would be so tiring.”
‘If you are in doubt, set us down in the river and we can row us in or have Talen take over.” though it is soon unneeded as Lilia sets us at the dock. “You did well Lilia.”
“Since we’re in a town, we might was well spend a few hours here and relax before continuing on. Let’s meet back here early this afternoon. I’ll remain with the barge and continue to study. Go and enjoy yourselves.”
Hearing Sherwood’s words Laucian smiles. A chance to stay within his beloved forest for a few short hours sounds great to his ears. “Very well, Would you care for us to bring you back anything, Sherwood?” If the woodsmen requires nothing Laucian will say, “Till this afternoon.”

As they begin to walk from the barge Valena enquires
Turning to Laucian she’ll say, “Is your temple close by? I would like to properly pay my respects to the Lady of the Forests.”
“My home and temple are about an hours ride from here. Have you heard of Black Lake?” He asks curiously, ”Our temple is not far from there. Its been a few months since I have walked through its Oak doors. I must admit I did not think I would miss it as much as I have.”
“There is a stable not far from here whom is well known to be a friendly with our temple. Perhaps they would allow us to borrow a few horses so we could pay our respects and see some old companions.”

There is a modest logging industry in Ainsun. Old, ancient trees are cleared and new saplings are planted in their place.

While walking through the town Laucian notes the lumber mill and how they replace what is cut. Pointing it out to the others. “Now if we could teach humans the proper way of logging; these lands would be covered in forests beyond the eye could see.”

Lia

As she is not needed the first shift Lia takes a nap for four hours when she awakes she begins to become aware of the great feeling within her from the Elfholds. One can definitely get used to that feeling.

As she gets ready for her shift Lia takes out one of her statues and calls forth her lioness to help her in the watch. Anyone nearby can see she lightly strokes the great beasts head as both look out upon the Elfhold’s landscape.

Upon riding the River and seeing Anisun, Lilia’s and Laucian’s clan hold. Lia begins to smile. It is only seeing her second elfin village. “It is very beautiful.” she notes, “ Kinda reminds me of our village back hole without all the trees.
“Wow! That’s amazing! Alas, I fear I will never reach that level of skill, sister. My magical skills are marginal at best.”
“So are my skills as a priest compare to grandmother. I am sure she would say the same if she were here. You will make us both proud.” afterward rousling his hair to annoy him.
“Thank you, cousin! I think it would be wonderful to take a look around. Well, sister, shall we go exploring? Would you like to come along as well, Kylie?”
“Aye!” she looks over at her twin, “It will be nice to see the workings of elves in everyday life, and perhaps we could visit the blacksmith, I would like to see there art work within their blades.”

If Kylie does join them Lia will make up some excuse to leave the two and return to the barge giving her brother sometime get to know Kylie.

(Dismiss the lioness when they land on the water.)
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

To Save Mother Tree!

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

Sharadin explains the situation regarding Jallarzi and the archmage position. It seems strange to hear her mentor described as weak in the area of combat magic. Kylie had always thought of Jallarzi as a wizardess of great skill and ability. Instead, it seems Jallarzi is destined to be an instructor eternally. Hopefully, she is happy with that fate, "Ahh, I see, Lord Sharadin. Thank you," Kylie replies.
Sharadin wrote:"Magical talents run strong in my family, so I would have to assume that they were already there. Most likely the pool just enhanced what was there. This same enhancement has been passed on to my daughters."

"Really? That must be quite a boon for them. Perhaps someday one of them will be in a position to become the archmage, maybe after Sherwood."
Sharadin wrote:"As long as all the members are orientated on the same goal. That's why we are particular about just who joins."

Kylie nods. "That makes sense; don't want anyone who might use the knowledge in the wrong way."
Sherwood wrote:“Interesting,” Sherwood nods upon hearing the comments. “The elephant seems a bit different. I can call upon it for an entire day, but only once a week at best. It seems that each figurine has its own set of rules and regulations.”

"As best I've been able to figure out, I can use mine about 3 times a week, for about 12 hours each time. It's fascinating that they are each unique."
Lilia wrote:“As I stated, halflings enjoy the finer things in life. Feywine is no exception.”

"Yes, I can appreciate that. Still, I cannot help wondering if there is more to it than that..."

About halfway through Lilia's shift with the crown, Kylie is awoken for her shift by Laucian. "Uh, good morning," she says sleepily. "Or, I guess, good night."

Once again, as they fly along, Lilia conducts language class for Talen and Kylie. Though she figures out the answer, Talen is quicker to respond. Not surprisingly, he gets it right. Whatever else he may be, Sherwood's cousin is bright. "Hey, that was my answer," she says with a chuckle.

Kylie watches as they fly over the perimeter of the Elfholds. She can feel the feeling she felt in Alfheim returning, if not as strongly. The forest is quite beautiful, particularly with the sun just rising over the mountains as they approach Ainsun. As they draw nearer Lilia's home, Kylie can see that it is a small town, though quite homey of a sort she has never known. It's not too hard to see why Lilia loves this place so.
Valena wrote:“Very nice,” Valena compliments upon seeing Ainsun. It’s not as large as my home in Feador, but one could feel quite at home here.”
Kylie looks over at Valena. "So how big is Feador, Valena? Could you tell me a little more about our clan's home?"
Sherwood wrote:“My friends, I’ve miscalculated somewhat. I still have several hours of studying before I would be ready to control the barge again. With the amount of sleep I require and the amount of time it takes me to memorize all of my spells, I’ll be unable to alternate every day with Lilia. At best I’d be able to take every third shift. Kylie you’re going to have to pilot the barge some of the time now.”

"That's fine with me, Sherwood. It will give me a way to contribute my share."
Lilia wrote:Although weary, Lilia will say, “I should still be able to do every other shift as planned. I do not require as much sleep and I have this Talisman of Memorization. I really never considered it to be of great value before, but now it is. I estimate that it would take me less than eight hours to prepare myself for the next shift. So if you can Kylie can trade off, then we should be able o continue our journey all day and all night.”

Kylie frowns. "I don't doubt that you could, Lilia. But perhaps it would be wiser in the long run to share the burden in a more balanced fashion, as Sherwood has suggested."
Sherwood wrote:“Since we’re in a town, we might was well spend a few hours here and relax before continuing on. Let’s meet back here early this afternoon. I’ll remain with the barge and continue to study. Go and enjoy yourselves.”
"That sounds like fun," Kylie says. She's travelled enough that she's not too intimidated at the thought of exploring a new town. "We won't be gone too long," she assures Sherwood. She's somewhat disappointed that Lilia won't be available to show them around her hometown, but she can understand her friend's need for rest right now.
Talen wrote:“Thank you, cousin! I think it would be wonderful to take a look around. Well, sister, shall we go exploring? Would you like to come along as well, Kylie?”
"Oh! Sure, Talen. Hopefully we'll be less likely to get lost or into trouble if we're together."

While she thinks they have a pretty good store of supplies, Kylie will keep her eyes open for anything that seems useful. She knows that the elves are known for good travel food, so that will be kept in mind. If Lia returns early, Kylie will be surprised, but continue on with Talen as she is quite curious about Lilia's hometown.

Thorfinn's maps are great! I've been watching his thread on the Mystara boards as he's developed them, and been very impressed with his work. BTW, I assume that Ainsun is the same as what he has marked as "Ainsu"?

That is correct, its supposed to be Ainsun. He forgot the N. I've got many of the same maps that he uses to make his, but nowhere near the time to put out such quality recreations. The elf map doesn't have many changes on it as compared to some of the others. I'll have to get in there and rename and add things. Look for more of his maps down the road.

Nariya:

with Laucian:

‘Thank you.” with a fleeting smile, as he notices just how beautiful her eyes are. Taking a chance he leans his head closer to her noticing her eyes sparking as he draws closer. Placing a light kiss upon her lips.

Nariya can't quite believe what is happening until it is almost over. She reaches up with one hand to keep Laucian close as he begins to pull away. Only this time, she parts her lips slightly more and Laucian can feel her warm breath as this kiss lasts just a bit longer. Her eyes, nearly half-closed, linger on his as their lips meet once more.

"I know there are some, but truthfully I do not know what markings they adorn themselves with," Nariya admits. "I spent so much time away learning my craft and of Solonor that I know little of the other priests. I would imagine though, that their markings take the form of the symbol of Ehlonna, just like ours are taken from Solonor's."

“Then we would have little else to occupy our time. Because I would wish it quite often.” he says with a playful smile.

"We will manage it somehow," Nariya replies with a playful smile of her own.

the barge trip:

Thinking about the situation at hand Laucian is quiet for a few moments then speaks. “Take a few moments to stretch you legs. Then we will be leaving. I do not wish to lay out in the open for long.

After getting a moment to stretch her legs and make a quick check of the surrounding area, Nariya gets back on board and once more we are under way.

Flying on through the night, Lilia pushes on until reaching Ainsun. Nariya is quite impressed with Lilia's stamina, although it is quite apparent she is very exhausted once we finally stop.

Sherwood mentions that he will need more time to study his spells and that all of us should take some time to ourselves. Laucian makes mention his home is very nearby and it seems Valena wishes to visit the temple.

"I would very much like to see your home too," Nariya will say as she approaches them. Hopefully the invitation will be extended and there will be time for Laucian to show her around a bit.

While walking through the town Laucian notes the lumber mill and how they replace what is cut. Pointing it out to the others. “Now if we could teach humans the proper way of logging; these lands would be covered in forests beyond the eye could see.”

Nariya finds herself falling more and more for Laucian. The initial physical attraction has made way to reveal more about him. She doesn't despise all humans, but their methods tend more towards the selfish. Laucain's words mimic her own thoughts, how grand the world would truly be if all the forests were as great

Laucian

Nariya can't quite believe what is happening until it is almost over. She reaches up with one hand to keep Laucian close as he begins to pull away. Only this time, she parts her lips slightly more and Laucian can feel her warm breath as this kiss lasts just a bit longer. Her eyes, nearly half-closed, linger on his as their lips meet once more.

As he pulls away he feels her hand move to his head and pulls him closer. With a little bit of surprise at how things went Laucian places his hands on her waist and pulls her slightly closer. His gaze meets hers as he sees the sparkling light within her iris. When the time does come to pull away his eyes will not leave hers and he offers his hand to her as the continue their walk in the courtyard.

“Something to think on. Perhaps when the time is right I would decorate myself to honor Ehlonna as well.”

"I would very much like to see your home too," Nariya will say as she approaches them. Hopefully the invitation will be extended and there will be time for Laucian to show her around a bit.

Offering his arm to Nariya with a smile, “I would not dream of leaving you behind, here nor anywhere.”

Post Continued:

The elves have returned to the Elfholds and are now in Ainsun, the home village for the Grunalf Clan. It is the home area for both Laucian and Lilia. Ainsun is a small village where only a dozen or so buildings are actually on the ground. Higher up in the great elfin trees there are many more buildings and they have the same rope bridges connecting them that there was in Alfheim town. This is all centered on the largest tree in the area and spirals out from there. However, there are no structures on this great tree.

What is unique about these structures is how easily they merge with the trees around them. You have to really look closely to see where the tree ends and a building begins.

What’s striking to those new to this area is just how little sunlight actually filters down to the ground. And yet in spite of this, other plants and mosses thrive on the ground.

Lilia has already departed to go home and rest, while the others make their plans. Laucian will escort Nariya and Valena to his home temple up near Black Lake. As the elves begin to disembark, a familiar figure walks up.

“Welcome children,” an old elf says in greeting. It is Arloen Treelife, a Clan Elder that you met down in Alfheim. “What brings you to Ainsun?”

Laucian explains the situation to Arloen who nods his understanding.

“Then please enjoy the hospitality of our village,” Arloen states. “You’ll find your horse is already at your temple, Laucian. Enjoy your trip and give my regards to Ivellios.”

Turning to the three half-elves, Arloen will say, “Come children, I’ll show you around our home personally. I would imagine that this is your first chance to see an elfin village up close.”

The old elf begins to walk along slowly. Keeping pace with him is no problem.

“Unlike the humans, we elves are part of larger clans. It is to our clan that our loyalties lay, even above our parents, for the clan raises us all. Everyone has a job within the clan and together we function as a cohesive group.”

Looking around you can see that the elves are beginning to start their typical day. You see another very old female elf watching over three elfin children in one area. Nearby a male elf has half a dozen pre-adult elves gathered around him. They are all dressed in leather garments and carry baskets with them.

Pointing to the elfin children Arloen says, “These are all the children in the clan right now. As they grow older, they will pass from Elder to Elder and they will be taught new skills.”

“The group over there is being taught how to gather food.” Arloen points to the group in leather with the baskets. “We elves live in harmony with the forest around us. We do not raise crops like the humans do. We could never desecrate the forest in that matter.”

“But crops are not needed, for the forest provides all the food we require. Within walking distance of town there are dozens of fruit bearing tress and shrubs. They blossom year round and we only take what we need.”

A small lumberyard sits near the docks. Here, those few trees that have been removed are cleaned of their limbs. The leaves are collected in one pile, and the branches are sorted out by size. Near the lumberyard, you see a squad of elves with bows marching out of town.

“As caretakers of the woods, we clear away trees as needed and plant new saplings in their place. The whole tree is used. Nothing goes to waste.”

“Our village is the closest to the Broken Lands and as such we see frequent humanoid incursions. Everyone in the clan is trained in the use of the bow and the sword. There are no exceptions. Those young ones are being led to a training area to practice their bowmanship.”

Arloen’s tour has led you up to the giant tree in the center of town. You can all sense that it is something special. Nearly a dozen robed elves tend to this special tree. Most are up in the tree, carefully tending to it. Some are cutting away limbs from other trees that are growing into this central tree, while others are trimming the large tree itself.

“This is our Clan Tree,” Arloen states. “This is one of the Trees of Life. We call her Shalandra. Magnificent, isn’t she? Here we study the natural aspects of the magical forest around us, as well as ways in which they can be changed through the use of forestry and enchantments. Her tenders are called Keepers of the Tree.”

“If you are interested in supplies for your journey, then come this way. Unlike the humans, we do not exchange coins here in Ainsun. Everything made by the clan is there for clan use. Unlike the dwarves, greed is a rare trait among we elves. No one ever takes more than they need. Help yourselves to what you need for your journey.”

Arloen leads you to a series of small shops and open markets. One area has food that has been collected from those who gathered. There are several varieties of nuts and a whole slew of fruits ranging from strawberries, apples, peaches, black berries, and red raspberries to grapes. Some of these fruits are dried out and form the basis of trail mixes with combinations of nuts.

Another stop has a collection of typical elfin garments from adult to children sizes. Lia and Kylie can find things to fit them, but Talen is more problematic as he is much taller than the typical elf. Elfin leather armor can be picked up here if desired.

A nearby area features elfin weaponry. There are arrows to be had, along with a few bows and swords. Quivers can be picked up here, along with cleaning kits for bows. Behind the area, several elves are working. One weaves new quivers, while others apply feathers to bows and mount the arrowheads. Bows are created here as well. Lia does not note a forge.

Elsewhere, Laucian leads Nariya and Valena to a small stable on the north side of town. There, several horses are stalled. Laucian exchanges friendly words with the elf stationed there and three horses are brought forth. The mounts are used quickly travel to areas when needed. If not in a rush, which is normal for most elves, they’ll just walk.

The ride is invigorating as you gallop down the small paths. The horses seem to enjoy the chance to stretch their legs. What is remarkable to those unfamiliar with the Elfholds is just how thick the forest is. Even with little sunlight, plants and bushes grow wild around the base of the trees. Fruit growing plants and trees are a common sight.

After a pleasant ride, the Temple comes into view. It’s located along the shores of Black Lake in a small clearing. The main worship area is out in the open in the clearing. Several buildings surround it. There is a small dock out on the lake, and nearly a dozen canoes have been pulled up on the beach.

The largest of the buildings is used as personal quarters. Others hold the temple pantry, armory, and private quarters. A small area to stable horses is also present. Laucian’s horse, Starfire, is currently there.

There is a smithy down near the lake as well. Swords and arrowheads are crafted and cooled with waters from the lake.

As you ride up, a female priestess in leather armor worn under pale green robes is instructing a small group of initiates. She is known to Laucian as Ielenia.

Laucian

“Then please enjoy the hospitality of our village,” Arloen states. “You’ll find your horse is already at your temple, Laucian. Enjoy your trip and give my regards to Ivellios.”

Laucian bows his head to the Elder saying, “Thank you, Elder. I will tell him.” When the others are ready he begins walking slowly toward the stables so the others can stop and look if they wish to. Pointing out several shops and buildings along the way.
“Thank you Clansman, we should have them back to you in a couple of hours.” he says as they depart the stable. Riding to the north Laucian finds himself smiling as he feels the wind on his face, even the horse seems to be enjoying itself.

Spotting several flowering plants he rides by slowly and plucks a few flowers, and places them before him in his saddle for later.

As the lay of the land becomes more familiar he slows his horse to a trot. Within a few moments several buildings are spotted along with the main temple. The familiar smell of the wind coming off the lake carrying the blooms to him becomes apparent. A smiles crosses his face and one word is muttered under his breath. “Home.”

He rides back toward Nariya handing her flowers, “Welcome to the Lady of Forest’s Temple and my home..” he says with a wave of his hand to the buildings beyond. He turns his mount and rides down into complex pointing out as much as he can in a short period of time. “The large building is mainly personal quarters, pantry,” passing a small building with budding vines crawling over its face. . “And the buildings closest to the water are the Armory and the smithy.”he explains pointing to the docks.

It is then he sees two familiar things. His mount Starfire running rampant among the stable ground and causing some minor trouble. And the other the one of his mentor Ielenia teaching several young ones. Moving his mount down to the stables he dismounts even as he looks over at the corral Starfire, calm and waiting near the fence. He soon finds his way over to him and pets his great nose. “Good to see you well my old friend.”

Looking back at the others he says, “Come, Ill show you to the temple, there are a few here I would like you to meet.” Approaching the Elfin women he is quite for a moment listening to her teachings as he did several years before. “A fair voice that always commanded one’s attention.” he says loud enough so Ielenia can hear his voice. “Its been a long time Ielenia, good to see you well. I would like you to meet Valena Feador of Ehlonna and Nariya of Solonar.” not wanting to interupt her lessons further. He will merely ask, “Where could I find Ivellios?”

Later on before he leaves he will walk out to the docks with a few of the flowers he gathered. Taking a silent moment to himself he will cast the petals into the water, as he did as a child oh so long ago.

Nariya:

Offering his arm to Nariya with a smile, “I would not dream of leaving you behind, here nor anywhere.”

And with that, she is off with Laucian and Valena making our way through the town. Getting horses is easy enough, and Nariya is reminded of the very similar nature that her people share. Should there be a need for something then one is given it without worrying about paying anyone back. Things always balance themselves in the end.

"Why Laucian, how sweet of you," Nariya replies smiling. She listens as he points out various buildings while she takes in the whole view. Then he stops, seeing some familar sights himself. She waits with Valena while he goes over to calm Starfire.

"So what do you think?" Nariya asks Valena, leaving the question purposefully vague.

"Nice to meet you Ielenia," Nariya will respond. She will enjoy the rest of the tour and then spend the remainder of her time there outside. She spots Laucian down by the water doing something, but leaves him to his moment.

To Save Mother Tree!

Post by Kylie »

Kylie:

The town of Ainsun is beautiful and almost magical in the way it all blends together. Having grown up in ugliness and squalor, it is hard for Kylie to comprehend what life in such a place must be like. Still, she has that wondrous elven feeling to comfort her and help her feel secure and as though she belongs in this wonderful place.

They are greeted by Arloen Treelife, whom they had met so recently before. Kylie curtsies. "A pleasure to see you again, Elder Treelife. I would be delighted to accompany you on a tour of Ainsun." She has no idea what the proper courtesies and mannerisms are, but Kylie does her best to avoid offending the Clan Elder.

The tour is fascinating, and Kylie listens carefully as Arloen explains everything to them. Life here seems so peaceful and comfortable. It must be quite blissful.

Arloen's statement surprises Kylie. "These few are the only children in the village?!" she asks, astounded. "I had heard that elven birthrates were low, but hadn't imagined they were this low..."
Arloen Treelife wrote:“Our village is the closest to the Broken Lands and as such we see frequent humanoid incursions. Everyone in the clan is trained in the use of the bow and the sword. There are no exceptions. Those young ones are being led to a training area to practice their bowmanship.”

"If we had more time, I would be tempted to join them. Unfortunately, we must continue on in a few hours."

Kylie examines the Clan Tree carefully. It is truly magnificent! "So this tree then is a direct offshoot of the Mother Tree?" she asks in an effort to confirm her understanding. "It is quite beautiful."

Kylie follows Arloen to the market area. "The fresh foods look wonderful, but won't hold up while travelling. Dried fruit and nuts should do much better." Kylie turns to Talen and Lia (if she's still there). "How much of this trail mix to you think we should get?" If they don't seem certain, she will try discussing it with the elven merchant, describing the size of their group, the likely length of the trip, and what food they have with them, asking for suggestions. She will also collect a few bags of fresh fruit to enliven the next few days.

The armor is of little use or value to Kylie, but she finds herself attracted to the elven clothing. She will look through them, seeking something that might suit her appearance while reflecting the elven side of her heritage. After all, all of her existing clothes are of human manufacture.

Kylie also visits the weapons area. They brought quite a few extra arrows with them, but her quiver is getting fairly worn from use. Perhaps she can find a nice new one here. If they have any magically-enhanced arrows, those will be of interest too.

Not understanding elven customs, Kylie will of course attempt to pay for what she acquires and be surprised if her money is refused.

Lia

Lia follows along with the others through the village. As she goes she looks about taking the village sites in. Soon enough they are greeted by Elder Arloen Treelife.

He soon extends his welcome and offers us a tour as well!!!
Turning to the three half-elves, Arloen will say, “Come children, I’ll show you around our home personally. I would imagine that this is your first chance to see an elfin village up close.”
“ I would like that, thank you.” she says with a pleasant smile. “Our villiage is nothing like this she states. As she amdly walks alongside with Arleon.

“So the orchards, if you will, take care of themselves? Amazing…”

Later on Arleon explains the workings of the elves from foraging to protecting themselves with both sword and bow.
Pointing to the elfin children Arloen says, “These are all the children in the clan right now. As they grow older, they will pass from Elder to Elder and they will be taught new skills.”
“When does an elf truly come of age?’ She asks curiously, “If they are passed from one elder to the next then perhaps their training would take years.” She states as the thought pops in her head.

At the marketplace Lia picks up everything and everything before her curiously looking at all the fruits and items for sale. Upon seeing the garments she begins to look through them. Not being one to ever wear a dress she merely stays away from them and looks to the shirts. Finding a light off blue tunic she smiles, “This is beautiful.” She attempts to pay for it but is turned away her gold of no use….
The next shop houses man weapons and Lia looks at the Elfin blades with fascination picking several up and admiring the handy work and intricate design of the handle Noticing several of the pommels are the same on both Daggers and sword Lia asks the elder, “Are these the marking of the blacksmith?’” tracing her fingers on the serpents scaled body.

Selecting a dagger she checks its balance in her hand and digs into her purse producing a few gold coins. And placing them on the table before the merchant/Elder. “I would not dream of taking such a fine piece of weaponry without compensating those whom worked so hard on its beauty.” She says evenly, if turned away she will merely say, “I am not of your clan and it would be to much like stealing it.”

She will also take a few fresh fruits for the road along with some trail mix to try.
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.

Sherwood thinks upon Laucian’s question for a moment. A nice steak would really hit the spot now, but such a thing won’t be found here. “Nothing I can think of, thanks for asking,” Sherwood will respond.
Kylie wrote:Kylie frowns. "I don't doubt that you could, Lilia. But perhaps it would be wiser in the long run to share the burden in a more balanced fashion, as Sherwood has suggested."
“Kylie has a point,” Sherwood agrees. “I have no doubt that you could do it, but to continual do so would be very draining. We’ll alternate the three of us with Talen filling in as needed.”
Kylie wrote:"That sounds like fun," Kylie says. She's traveled enough that she's not too intimidated at the thought of exploring a new town. "We won't be gone too long," she assures Sherwood. She's somewhat disappointed that Lilia won't be available to show them around her hometown, but she can understand her friend's need for rest right now.
Confident that they won’t find any trouble in Ainsun, Sherwood waves goodbye before turning back to his studies. Warnings of proceeding with caution are not required here.

Lilia:
Kylie & Talen wrote:“Uhm,” Talen utters being caught of guard. “Thaet—-- we had that word before. The! The! It must be The Dorwynn Elfholds!”

“Very good,” Lilia praises. “Many words do not properly translate into other languages. Many times the names of people, places remain the same.”
Kylie & Sherwood wrote:Kylie frowns.

“As you wish,” Lilia simply agrees, settling the matter. “Perhaps you are correct that staying fresh would be more prudent in the long run.”

Lilia finds home much the same it was when she left. However, it is she who has changed considerably. Her small quarters are most inviting and sleeping in her own bed is simply wondrous. Rising later on that morning, Lilia gathers a few things before heading out to meet up with her companions.

She finds them already gathering up supplies for the journey. Lilia will make a few selections of her own. “The trail mix will stay fresh for several weeks, up to a month if necessary. It’s been my experience that it doesn’t last long enough to go stale.”

Turning to Kylie and Talen, she’ll hand one of them a book. “You might find this very useful. It’s an elfin text on learning the mage’s tongue. It was how I first learned Alphatian. I’m sure it will help you master it as well.”

Returning to the barge, Lilia will munch on some of the fresh fruit and begin to study her spells.

Valena:
As she gets ready for her shift Lia takes out one of her statues and calls forth her lioness to help her in the watch. Anyone nearby can see she lightly strokes the great beasts head as both look out upon the Elfholds landscape.
Valena noticeably perks up when the pair of great cats comes forth from the small figurines. “That’s amazing! What marvelous felines these are! Powerful and dangerous hunters I would wager. I would not like to be on the receiving end of those teeth and claws. May I pet them?”

Kylie looks over at Valena. "So how big is Feador, Valena? Could you tell me a little more about our clan's home?"
“I would estimate about twice the size of Ainsun. We have a population of about 1000 elves. Feador sits near the shores of Lake Selinar. Our clanhold is best noted as a center for study of the Tree of Life. There is an extensive library of genealogies and magical lore. These are all stored in the beautiful Palace of Tree Magic. It is a structure similar to the Sky Palace of the Elfin King.”

Laucian wrote:"My home and temple are about an hours ride from here. Have you heard of Black Lake?" He asks curiously, "Our temple is not far from there. It's been a few months since I have walked through its Oak doors. I must admit I did not think I would miss it as much as I have."
“I have heard of Black Lake,” Valena states, “but have never been to this part of the Elfholds before. Please, lead the way.”

The ride to Laucian’s temple is invigorating. Valena feels at home here in the forest. She spends a few moments praising her mount for its speed in getting her to this destination.

"So what do you think?" Nariya asks Valena, leaving the question purposefully vague.
“It’s very nice,” Valena determines. “Not much different from my own home temple.”
Laucian wrote:Looking back at the others he says, “Come, I’ll show you to the temple, there are a few here I would like you to meet.” Approaching the Elfin women he is quiet for a moment listening to her teachings as he did several years before. “A fair voice that always commanded one’s attention.” he says loud enough so Ielenia can hear his voice. “It’s been a long time Ielenia, good to see you well. “Greetings, priestess,” Valena will say when introduced. “This is a marvelous temple you have here.”

Excusing herself, Valena will make her way to the temple proper and spend some time praying to the Lady of the Forests.

Talen:
Laucian smiles a smirk as Talen holds his bow so gingerly but doesn't mention it. "Aye, that is the Pull strength of the bow. Normal Longbows have a long range of about 200 yards. This bow is much more special Talen. You will not find many like it. It is known as the Hunter's bow, blessed and given to me by Ehlonna herself. I have hit Wyverns at about 400 yards with it."
Learning that just makes Talen all the more nervous about practicing with this holy artifact!
Laucian wrote:"If you would like we could see if the armory has a longbow we can purchase. Or perhaps I could make you one. Which ever is more toward your liking."
“Well, let us see if we can find one in the armory. I wouldn’t worry about breaking it like I would about one that you could craft.”
“Uhm, sorry!”, Talen quickly answers. “It just seemed obvious to me. I didn’t mean to be rude.”
“Kylie has a point,” Sherwood agrees. “I have no doubt that you could do it, but to continual do so would be very draining. We’ll alternate the three of us with Talen filling in as needed.”
“I will do what is need,” Talen declares. “Just let me know when I am needed.”
Kylie wrote:"Oh! Sure, Talen. Hopefully we'll be less likely to get lost or into trouble if we're together."
Talen is ecstatic to have Kylie joining him and Lia on their exploration of the elfin town. However, it turns out to be misplaced concern.
“Welcome children,” an old elf says in greeting. It is Arloen Treelife, a Clan Elder that you met down in Alfheim. “What brings you to Ainsun?”

Turning to the three half-elves, Arloen will say, “Come children, I’ll show you around our home personally. I would imagine that this is your first chance to see an elfin village up close.”
“Elder! It is good to see you again. Yes, a tour would be marvelous! There is so much we’d like to learn about our elfin heritage.”
Kylie examines the Clan Tree carefully. It is truly magnificent! "So this tree then is a direct offshoot of the Mother Tree?" she asks in an effort to confirm her understanding. "It is quite beautiful."
“Indeed, quite marvelous,” Talen says, bathed in the love from the Tree of Life. “I never realized just how special elves where until these last few days.”

The tour of the food hut is most interesting. There are many things here that Talen has never seen before. He can’t help but sample the fruits. “These are delicious! I’ve never had anything like this before!”

The weapons shop gets Talen’s attention. He finds a high quality elfin longbow here that puts the one he found in the armory to shame. He’ll pick up a quiver and fill it with arrows.

“Thank you for everything you’ve given us and shown us, Elder. We will do our best not to fail in this mission.”

It seems that much of the morning has passed and Lilia has returned bearing a book.
Lilia wrote:Turning to Kylie and Talen, she’ll hand one of them a book. “You might find this very useful. It’s an elfin text on learning the mage’s tongue. It was how I first learned Alphatian. I’m sure it will help you master it as well.”
“Thank you, Lilia. That will be a big help, I am sure.”

Taking the book, Talen will hand it to Kylie. “Ladies first. I’ll study it after you’re finished with it.”

“Well, let us see if we can find one in the armory. I wouldn’t worry about breaking it like I would about one that you could craft.”

Laucian merely chuckles at the half elf for a moment, “I would not mind making you one, though the choice is yours to make.”

Sherwood thinks upon Laucian’s question for a moment. A nice steak would really hit the spot now, but such a thing won’t be found here. “Nothing I can think of, thanks for asking,” Sherwood will respond.

Laucian nods in response, “See you in a few hours.” as he turns away from the barge.

She finds them already gathering up supplies for the journey. Lilia will make a few selections of her own. “The trail mix will stay fresh for several weeks, up to a month if necessary. It’s been my experience that it doesn’t last long enough to go stale.”
Lia smiles at the Elfmaiden’s comments about the trail mix, “It must be very good then.”
Valena noticeably perks up when the pair of great cats comes forth from the small figurines. “That’s amazing! What marvelous felines these are! Powerful and dangerous hunters I would wager. I would not like to be on the receiving end of those teeth and claws. May I pet them?”
As Lia pets one of her lioness heads Valena’s voices carries over as she approaches. She smiles as Valena guess is fairly accurate. “They are both powerful and swift, as well as loyal and friendly. You would never receive such a treatment, while they are in my control. You may pet them if you would like, no harm will come to you.” as she merely wishes them to sit beside her. “The one on my left is Misha and the other is Sasha.”
The last thing you shall hear is the bladesong of my sword.
