Crucible #51 - "Lost in Time"

The world as you knew it no longer exists. The accident that gave most of the Vigilant their powers also affected those in the distant past and far future as well. Sixty-six million years in the past, some dinosaurs became sentient. As their civilization advanced, they discovered that a giant asteroid was on a collision course. Using their technology and the same temporal/extra-dimensional bubble that had given them sentience, a lone scientist was able to lock on to a power source far in the future. Moving forward in time, the scientist used the energy from a runway fast breeder reactor to power his asteroid busting weapon. The plan succeeded and the dinosaurs never died out. Humanity never existed; except for a few hardy souls who were inside the pan-dimensional bubble at the moment history was altered.

Roll Call: Blackout and Frostbite in the past

Our heroes find themselves sixty-five million years in the past and just a few seconds after the Age of Dinosaurs was supposed to end. They find themselves surrounded by advancing humanoid reptiles. Frostbite tries to contact Goldstar with the comlink.
Frostbite wrote:If the Dino-humans decide to make their way forward Frosty will have no problems keeping them at bay. He radio's Goldy, "Goldstar where ever you went I suggest you come back quickly! We may need you....."

However, there is no response from Goldstar.

Realizing that the lizards are beginning to close in, Frostbite generates a snowstorm in the immediate area. The Saurians instantly back way from the cold and Blackout does not seem hindered by the blowing snow. Using the snow as a cover, the pair moves out of the area. It takes the Saurians a few minutes to realize that their prey has fled.

GM Notes:

You can move out of the laboratory complex and away from the Saurians. Once outside you can see that the lab was on the edge of a small city. A tropical jungle is close by.

Now what?

Roll Call: Backlash, Eldrich, Tesla, and Stormchild in the Present.

The situation in the present is dire. With history being changed, everything outside of the Dome is now an alien city. The inside of the dome remains unchanged, at least for the moment. A large alien ship hovers over the dome and a beam fired from it is causing the dome to shrink. Smaller ships fly in a pattern and appear to be causing all living things inside the dome to vanish.

Eldrich casts a Step spell and he and his demoness-cicle reappear on top of the large central ship.

Elsewhere, Backlash and Tesla had much the same idea. Seeing that the sweeper ships are far enough away, Tesla picks up Backlash and Alex and flies up towards the largest ship. (Backlash has to remove any Density Increase to have any chance of this working.)

Tesla's arms feel like lead by the time she reaches the top of the alien ship. She lands a few seconds after Eldrich and the still frozen Devilspawn appears. From this vantage point you can see that the dome continues to shrink. Looking out towards San Diego Bay, you're shocked to see the island and the castle on it that you called your base is not there!

Roll Call: Flux, Menagerie, & Tilt-A-Whirl in the future.

The situation is just as dire in an unknown time and place for the remainder of the Vigilant. Radiation is beginning to affect both Flux and Tilt. Lily so far hasn't show in signs of being affected while in the form of Goldstar. Surprisingly, contact has been made with Edgar and the sentient vessel says that help is on the way.

In the meantime, the trio tries to reach cover in the mountains. It's quickly revealed that the reflection that Lily saw was actually an approaching ship. It's an alien fighter and it's attacking!

Giant-sized Flux turns to try and shield Tilt from the incoming fire. Gold-Lily flies towards the ship and unleashes Goldstar's most powerful attack. With a cry of "Radiation Blast", Lily unleashes a blast of energy. Her aim is true, but a previously invisible force field around the ship blocks the attack.

The ship fires several more times and Flux is hit in the back! He fights to stay conscious but begins to plummet from the sky!

At that moment, there is an ear shattering sonic BOOM! Looking about, you can see a pair of costumed females seemingly appear from out of nowhere. The first is the one and true Goldstar! She hovers for a moment taking a look at her surroundings.

"Rose!", Goldstar calls out, "Stay close to Flux! I'd deal with the marauder!"

The other woman is unfamiliar to any of you. She does appear to be of Asian descent and wears a blue and green bodysuit. She has shoulder-length black hair with brown eyes. While Goldstar flies towards the alien marauder, the other woman streaks towards the falling Flux. She gestures forward and in response a bubble of energy forms around Flux stopping his plunge.

Elsewhere, the real Goldstar closes in on the alien marauder and calls out, "Plasma Blast!" Star fire erupts all around the ship and it explodes a moment later. The attack was far more powerful than you remember Goldstar being able to use.

Seemingly satisfied, Goldstar follows the other woman towards the ground. The Asian woman continues to generate the energy bubble around Flux and Tilt.

“You’re going to be okay,” the costumed woman explains. “My force field blocks out the radiation, but we can’t stay here for long.”

“It’s been a very long time, my friends,” Goldstar states showing maturity that you’re unfamiliar with. “But reunions and explanations will have to wait. We are in great danger,”

As if on cue, a loud noise is heard high overhead. There more ships are appearing in the sky much like Goldstar and the woman did each is accompanied with a deafening boom. There are a few marauders at first and then dozens more appear. As if that wasn’t enough, several aircraft carrier sized ships appear amongst the smaller attack vessels. Each ship is closing in on your location!

Menagerie:

Lily unleashes Goldstar's patented radiation blast at the attacking ship. Alas, the craft seems impervious to the blast, firing back and striking Flux. Before she can decide what to do next, two other women appear nearby via some sort of teleportation effect. One of them is clearly Goldstar.
Goldstar wrote:"Rose!", Goldstar calls out, "Stay close to Flux! I'd deal with the marauder!"

Rose!? The name grabs Lily's attention. She wheels to look at the other woman. Could this grown woman be her daughter? Is that it? Have they suddenly moved into the future?

"Rose?" she asks softly, all thought of the current danger forgotten. "Is that you?" She entirely ignores Goldstar destroying the attacker. She is entirely fixated as she watches the woman save Flux and Tilt.
Goldstar wrote:“It’s been a very long time, my friends,” Goldstar states showing maturity that you’re unfamiliar with. “But reunions and explanations will have to wait. We are in great danger,”
"So this is the future?" Lily cannot help asking, as it seems to confirm her suspicion.

It is then that she notices that more alien craft are appearing. They need to leave, quickly. "Lead the way, Goldstar." Lily has no idea where they are or how to reach safety. And she's eager for those explanations...

Frostbite

Seeing the dino-men move forward Frosty concentrates on creating a blinding snowstorm. Within a few seconds one erupts with in the area causing the dinos to move back from the cold.

‘So you don’t like the cold!’ he says to himself as he follows Balckout out of the area. ‘Ill have to remember that.

Backlash

Dropping his density Tesla soon picks Backlash up and he Stormchild, As they are flying up to the Big Ship, Lash keeps an eye open for any incoming trouble. But none comes. As they land on the Ship Backlash sees Eldrich and the frozen women.

“Glad to see you well, Eldrich.” as he looks at the mage and his captive.

Backlash will begin looking for a hatch if there is any, after seeing if there is any he will ask Eldrich, “Any chance you can get us inside?”

If there is no chance Backlash will see if he can find a lip or something to pull up on, by increasing his density to full then lifting up as hard as he can.

Goldstar:

After dealing with the marauder, Goldstar lands near Rose and the others.
"So this is the future?" Lily cannot help asking, as it seems to confirm her suspicion.
“You were thrown two billion years into the future,” Goldstar answers as she eyes the arriving armada. “We and the lizards have been waiting for you to arrive. As you might have guess, they’re not that concerned for your safety.”

"T-Two billion years?!..." The concept is almost more than Lily can process. Her mouth works, as she suddenly finds herself with question too numerous to count, but nothing comes out.
Goldstar wrote:“Get inside the energy sphere with Flux and Tilt,” Goldstar tells Lily. “Rose will get you out of here. I’ll deal with this lot and then met you at Edgar’s. Get going!”
Still stunned by Goldstar's revelation, Gold-Lily does as asked, meekly flying over and entering the energy bubble. Once inside, she returns to her own form as Menagerie.

Then, a thought occurs to Lily. Shifting once again to the form of Serena this time, she attempts to heal the ultraviolet damage to her fellow Vigilants as they are carried along.

Roll Call: Flux, Menagerie, Tilt-A-Whirl, Goldstar, and Rose two billion years in the future.

In two billion years the Earth is nothing like anyone remembers it. The sun has entered its final stages of its existence. It’s now no longer a yellow star, but a huge reddish giant. Earth’s oceans have boiled away and lethal radiation bombards the planet. Very little of the atmosphere remains and the planet can no longer support life as we know it.

However, there is plenty of life there now. The trio of Flux, Lily, and Tilt has appeared from the past. Contact was made with Edgar and the sentient ship assured them that help was on the way. An attacking alien marauder found them first, but then Goldstar and a young woman named Rose appeared seemingly out of nowhere. But they were not alone as a whole alien armada has just arrived!
Lily wrote:Rose!? The name grabs Lily's attention. She wheels to look at the other woman. Could this grown woman be her daughter? Is that it? Have they suddenly moved into the future?

"Rose?" she asks softly, all thought of the current danger forgotten. "Is that you?" She entirely ignores Goldstar destroying the attacker. She is entirely fixated as she watches the woman save Flux and Tilt.
“Mom…?”, Rose says questioningly. “I didn’t realize it was you!”

Rose will fly over and give her mother a big hug. Behind her, the glowing force field protects Flux and Tilt from any further damage.
Goldstar wrote:“Get inside the energy sphere with Flux and Tilt,” Goldstar tells Lily. “Rose will get you out of here. I’ll deal with this lot and then met you at Edgar’s. Get going!”

As she speaks, Goldstar begins to draw her strength in preparation for unleashing her most devastating attack…

“We better do as she says,” Rose states. “If she’s going to do what I think she’s going to do, we do not want to stay around!”

Lily complies and steps inside the energy globe with Flux and Tilt. At Rose’s command, the globe rises into the air. Rose flies up to the globe and places her hands on it. Together you begin to rapidly accelerate. One last look back and you can see a strange darkness come over Goldstar.

Suddenly, there is a tremendous BOOM and Rose and the globe are accelerated forward at a velocity multiple times faster than light itself. Those inside the globe are unaffected by this rapid acceleration.

Lily transforms into Serena and uses the Knight’s healing touch on Tilt and Flux. The two begin to come around finding themselves inside an energy bubble.

Back on Earth, Goldstar transforms into the final fate that awaits many a star. The gravity about her becomes so intense that it warps the fabric of space/time all around her! She transforms into a living singularity.

The Saurian fleet tries to escape, but it is much to late. Goldstar has changed into a black hole and the vessels are drawn in to their doom. The entire fleet is quickly gobbled up, but the destruction does not end there.

Rose continues to accelerate away from the Earth. A giant black spot has appeared on the surface of the planet. The planet’s former wavers for a moment and then erupts in a tremendous explosion! Energy and matter are thrown out in all directions. The moon is blown apart in the explosion as well. But none of the debris can escape the black hole. It’s all drawn back and disappears down the cosmic drain.

By now, Rose has reached Saturn and continues to accelerate. Looking back you can see that the sun itself is being drawn into the black hole. A great trail of star fire is being siphoned off. You cannot see the black hole itself, but it is illuminated by the glowing mass that swirls around it.

Rose rapidly flies through what Flux recalls to be the Oort Cloud, a sprawling debris field of matter left over from the formation of the solar system. You’re nearly one light year from the sun now.

The gravitational stress being forced upon the sun causes it to go nova. A blinding flash illuminates nearly half the sky. The fiery remains of the sun sweep outwards, destroying most of the rest of the solar system in the process. But none of it truly escapes the black hole. The matter is all drawn back and sucked down into the black hole.

“I will never get used to that”, Rose mutters to herself.

The Oort Cloud is left behind and Rose and her cargo streaks out of what had been Earths solar system. The great void of interstellar space lies ahead. But even this does not look like you remember the night sky to be. Much of it is still dark, but there are numerous glowing areas visible to the naked eye. The stars do not look ‘right’. There are simply too many of them!

Unexpectedly, a dark sphere comes into sight and Rose begins to slow down. There would have been an ear-shattering boom as Rose goes to sub-light speed. A hatch slowly opens on the dark sphere and Rose and her passengers go in. Before the hatch can close behind you, Goldstar slips in as well.

Rose dissipates her energy globe and the being you recognize as Edgar approaches.

“Welcome friends”, Edgar says. “Let’s get you to the medical bay before you take any more damage from your radiation exposure.”

Eldrich Arcane

Reaching the top of the largest flying object unobstructed was something of a surprise for Eldrich-he truly expected to be killed before achieving this. A few seconds later Tesla, Backlash and a small boy arrive atop the craft with him.
Backlash will begin looking for a hatch if there is any, after seeing if there is any he will ask Eldrich, “Any chance you can get us inside?”
"Welcome friends. I intend to strike hard against this object, be it creature or vessel, with what results I cannot say with certainty. If you know of an entry so much the better but I cannot answer for the effects of my magics on this."

Eldrich readies his newest spell and aims it at the object....

The End of the World as We Knew It

Post by Bruce »

Flux

Flux turns his back to the attacker and takes the blasts poorly, falling from the sky unconsious and reverting to his normal size. ( So naturally he misses the dialog :x )

By the time he recovers with Serena/Lily's help he is seeing the end of the world and the solar system too!

The Oort cloud--never thought I'd be out here again! Guess it's all that's left now of home.

“I will never get used to that”, Rose mutters to herself.

"Get USED to it?? How many times has THAT happened?? And was it nessesary to destroy the whole system?"

Flux is stunned at the power of it and twice over when he learns it was all Goldstar-no weapon involved, no great ship.

When the dark sphere opens to admit them and Rose drops her field Flux is relieved to see the familiar form of Edgar seemingly unchanged.

“Welcome friends”, Edgar says. “Let’s get you to the medical bay before you take any more damage from your radiation exposure.”
"Edgar! Is this ship you? How can you be here now? And just when is 'now'? Who are we fighing against? How can anyone still be around after BILLIONS of years?"

Stop it Sarge! You're babbling.

Taking a breath, Flux steadies himself.

"After the checkup Edgar, I'd like a full breakdown of the situation. Don't hold anything back. Don't skip anything. And some food if there is any. We've been in rush mode for, um a long time."

"I agree, and maybe we can figure out what happened to Goldstar too," Blackout responds as he makes his way further from the complex. "I'm not sure if he should dive headlong into the jungle at this time, but maybe keep on the edge so we can easily hide if needed."

From this vantage point you can see that the dome continues to shrink. Looking out towards San Diego Bay, you're shocked to see the island and the castle on it that you called your base is not there!

Straining at the weight, Tesla toughs it out and makes it to the top of the ship just in time. Landing unceremoniously, Tesla spends the next long moments trying to get her arms to quit complaining about the strain. All the while, she looks out at the view and realizes things are not looking good.

Glad to see Eldrich is there, Tesla can't help but wonder what happened to everyone else. Could we be it? she thinks to herself, but instantly regrets it.

Seeing Eldrich is about to unleash something against the hull of the ship and not know the outcome doesn't ease Tesla very much. She will step away in case things go poorly. Tesla will then look about to see if she can determine if there is a hatch or other equipment on this side of the ship.

"Ohhh, sweetheart..." Tears run down Lily's face as she hugs her suddenly-grown daughter. Suddenly seeing her like this is almost more than Lily can bear. "You've grown up and I missed it all..."

It tears at her heart, but Lily lets go of Rose long enough to enter the glowing bubble and be carried away. Rose flies so fast, it's almost hard to comprehend. She has developed into a powerful young woman.

At least Serena's power seems to work for her. Lily is impressed that she is able to provide healing for Tilt and Flux. Both appear to be recovering and regain consciousness.

Taking her eyes from her daughter for just a few moments, but long enough to see Goldstar consume the planet, perhaps even the entire solar system, behind them. It's astonishing - and scary - that she has become so powerful. Even worse, she seems to have lost her friend after just finding her again. The golden woman will be missed.

They fly into some kind of metal orb floating in deep space. At the last moment, Goldstar flies in behind them! Lily cannot begin to comprehend how Goldy survived back there, and can only be glad that she did.

They are greeted by Edgar, who appears not to have changed in slightest in two billion years, and invited to ask questions. Lily stammers for several moments, having trouble putting together any sensible questions. Flux, however, has no such difficulty, expressing his amazement at what has occurred and how all of this is possible.

As Flux finishes, Lily finally gains her composure enough to add her own questions. "I don't understand. None of you look two billion years old. Rose looks to have aged maybe ten or twenty years, and I cannot see any real difference in you or Goldstar. How is this possible?" Even as she asks her questions, Lily feels better just being so near her daughter.

She turns to Goldstar. "And how did you survive that back there? That black hole, or whatever it was, swallowed the whole planet. Why didn't it swallow you, too?"

Goldstar

Post by Goldstar »

Goldstar:

As Goldstar concentrates she becomes more and more dense. Space/time is warped around her to the point that not even light can escape. The Saurian fleet is quickly destroyed by the singularity. The Earth, the moon, and the sun soon follow suit.

Feeling assured that any enemies within the area have been destroyed, Goldstar decreases her density and the singularity fades back into nothingness. The debris of the solar system swirls around her. Going to lightspeed, Goldstar quickly catches up with Rose and reaches Edgar at almost the same time.

Entering into Edgar, Goldstar catches some of Flux’s questions.
Flux wrote:"Edgar! Is this ship you? How can you be here now? And just when is 'now'? Who are we fighting against? How can anyone still be around after BILLIONS of years?"
“You’re approximately two billion years in the future, Flux. There is a temporal shift in the pan-dimensional bubble around San Diego and this is where you ended up. The enemy is the Saurians and they are trying to obliterate us. You three and Rose are the last humans in existence. Speaking for myself, my lifespan is not measured in human terms.”
Lily wrote:As Flux finishes, Lily finally gains her composure enough to add her own questions. "I don't understand. None of you look two billion years old. Rose looks to have aged maybe ten or twenty years, and I cannot see any real difference in you or Goldstar. How is this possible?" Even as she asks her questions, Lily feels better just being so near her daughter.
Goldstar chuckles as she responds, “I’m actually well over two billion years old, much closer to three. My powers have continued to grow as the years have gone past.”
Lily wrote:She turns to Goldstar. "And how did you survive that back there? That black hole, or whatever it was, swallowed the whole planet. Why didn't it swallow you, too?"
“I was the black hole, but only for a short time. So, in a sense, I could not swallow myself. If you recall, my Neutron Star power increased my density. What you just witnessed was the ultimate end of that ability.”

Turning to face Flux, Lily, and Tilt, Goldstar will say, “The gist of the situation is this. You’re in an alternative timeline. The past was altered and the extinction of the dinosaurs never occurred. They grew into the dominant species on earth and humankind never existed. The enemy fleet I just destroyed was theirs. In a sense, we’re at war. They’ll do anything they can to stop us.”

“Now that you’re here, we can work to put things right and undo what has been done. Are you with me?”

Roll Call: Blackout and Frostbite in the past

Frostbite called up a whiteout to drive the Saurian scientists off. Using its cover, he and Blackout reach the nearby jungle and go inside. They come to a stop a short distance inside.

Looking back you can see uniformed Saurians arriving the scene. They exchange words in their native tongue and the scientists point off in the direction of the jungle. Most of the Saurians in uniform turn and start heading in your direction. They split up into two groups of three. One group heads towards the jungle on your right, the other your left. They appear to be carrying weapons in their hands.

A cry from overhead momentarily diverts your attention. There you can see a flock of pterodactyls flying overhead and then off.

GM Notes:

You’ve got Saurians coming into the jungle to get you. Now what?

Roll Call: Backlash, Eldrich, Tesla, and Stormchild in the Present.

The heroes have reached the top of the largest alien ship. It hovers over the translucent dome and seems to be causing it to grow smaller. The heroes look for a way in. Backlash looks for a hatch, while Eldrich prepares to cast a spell to gain entry. Tesla steps away to look for a way in, while the scantily clad Devilspawn imprisoned in ice fascinates Alec.

Eldrich invokes his magic and the arcane blast simply bounces off the alien ships haul.

Sudden movement gets Backlash’s attention. A portion of the deck slides back like elevator doors and a trio of armored humanoids rises up to the deck on a lift. The aliens’ armor is black with gold trim. Opaque helmets conceal their identities.

Spotting Backlash, one of the three raises his right arm and points it at the hero. What appears to be a weapon is seen on the back of the armored man’s wrist!

The other two aliens look for their own targets. One locks in on Eldrich, while the other spots Tesla.

Roll Call: Flux, Menagerie, Tilt-A-Whirl, Goldstar, and Rose in the future.

In the far-flung future, Lily has deduced that Goldstar’s companion is none other than her own daughter all grown up!
Rose will fly over and give her mother a big hug. Behind her, the glowing force field protects Flux and Tilt from any further damage.

"Ohhh, sweetheart..." Tears run down Lily's face as she hugs her suddenly-grown daughter. Suddenly seeing her like this is almost more than Lily can bear. "You've grown up and I missed it all..."
“I missed you so much…”, Rose says between her own tears.

Lily is urged to step into Rose’s sphere and then they are off. Rose accelerates to lightspeed with her passengers. Behind them, Goldstar increases her density until she becomes a living black hole. This destroys the alien fleet and eventually the entire solar system before she can revert back.

Lily uses Serena’s power to heal Flux and Tilt. They start to come around during the trip.
"I will never get used to that", Rose mutters to herself.

"Get USED to it?? How many times has THAT happened?? And was it necessary to destroy the whole system?"
“Two other times that I know of, sir,” Rose answers. “I can assure you that no native life forms above microscopic levels were killed during that attack. Earth has long be unfit for life due to the radiation. You’re lucky that there was enough atmosphere left so that you had air to breath. It was the quickest, most efficient way to take out the enemy.”

In short order, Rose reaches a dark sphere in the void between solar systems. A hatch opens up and she directs her cargo inside. Goldstar catches up to them at this point. Edgar greets the new arrivals.
"Edgar! Is this ship you? How can you be here now? And just when is 'now'? Who are we fighting against? How can anyone still be around after BILLIONS of years?"
“Master Flux, good to see you again, as well as you Miss Lily and Miss Tilt-A-Whirl. It is a pleasure to have you on board once more.”

“Yes, this is my current configuration. I’ve long since healed the damage done to me when I first arrived on your world. As long as I can power my systems, I can repair any damage done to me. I do not ‘age’ as you humans do.”

“Miss Goldstar is correct. The Saurians are our enemy. They changed the past and because of it you’re in a future where your race never evolved. You’re nearly two billion years into your future.”
"After the checkup Edgar, I'd like a full breakdown of the situation. Don't hold anything back. Don't skip anything. And some food if there is any. We've been in rush mode for, um a long time."

“We have plenty to eat, sir. I will endeavor to explain everything as best I can.”

“Actually, I’m not two billion years old,” Rose says to Lily. “I’m closer to about four hundred million, give or take a day or two. The accident that gave most of you your powers changed me as well. I can tap into the very power of the universe and use it to do fantastic things. I don’t age and I can heal myself very rapidly. Goldstar is very similar in this aspect, but she’s far older.”

Escorted by Edgar, you reach his medical facilities that are far more advanced than you recall. A second Edgar is already there and is waiting for your arrival with a tray of food. As Edgar works on treating the radiation exposure, he relates the situation as he understands it.

“The key to all of this is the accident that gave most of you your powers and caused my arrival in San Diego. The convergence of energies created a rift in time and space. You saw it yourself where beings from other time periods were moved into yours. But those in other time periods were affected as well.”

“Sixty-six million years in your past, the accident triggered mutations in the creatures you call the dinosaurs. Some of them became sentient. In time they learned technological know how, so that nearly one million years later when they were faced with extinction they could do something about it.”

“That strange ghost-like figure that was spotted by Miss Tilt-A-Whirl was actually a Saurian scientist projecting himself into the future. The conditions inside the bubble are most conducive to temporal translocation. Using their science, the Saurian scientists moved forward in time to locate a power source they could use to destroy the asteroid that would end their civilization. They found this power source in your runaway breeder reactor. They siphoned off the excess energy and then returned to their own time period.”

“Masters Blackout and Frostbite where on the scene and transported back into the past with them, as was Miss Goldstar. They then used this energy to power a beam weapon and with it destroyed the asteroid. The age of the dinosaurs did not end sixty-five million years ago on Earth. Because of this, they continued to evolve and humanity never came into being.”

“This was all back when I was fairly clueless,” Goldstar adds. “Unsure what was going on, I flew off to see what the beam they fired did. Not long after that, something struck me. My guess is that it was a second beam. It knocked me out and sent me sprawling through space. I have no idea for how long. When I did come around, all I knew was that I was a long way from home and really had no idea just how to get back.”

“With their destruction averted,” Edgar continues, “the Saurians continue to evolve. In spite of their great intelligence, they remained vicious predators. They ruthlessly conqueror any other beings they came across. Eventually the Saurians developed time travel and used this as a new weapon to destroy their enemies. They would simply destroy them in the past where they were more vulnerable. Entire civilizations were erased in a blink of an eye.”

“Having used this method to destroy their enemies, the Saurians realized that they were just as vulnerable to it as well. Back in what might be considered your present, they converged on the energy bubble. Those inside the bubble were unaffected by the altering of history, so Downtown San Diego appeared surrounded by a vast Saurian city.”

“Once the event that caused them to survived had happened in the present, they moved in. Using their technology they caused the energy bubble to close. The citizens were rounded up and were most likely used in experimentation or worse.”

“Upon learning that Miss Lily had vanished, Miss Rose became so distraught that her powers activated. They mixed with the properties of the energy bubble and moved everyone within me forward in time approximately 1.6 billion years.”

“By then, the Earth was uninhabitable to Saurians. They had wasted all their resources and moved on to inhabit other worlds. But they were aware that some beings had escaped the energy bubble into the future, so they were ready for our arrival. We would have been destroyed, but Miss Goldstar came to our rescue.”

“Edgar and myself share a rapport,” Goldstar explains, “from when we were first linked. I could find him if I concentrated on that task. As I said before, it took me a very long time to find my way back to Earth. By then it was long after the Saurians had taken down the energy bubble.”

“My powers continued to grow as the centuries passed and I discovered that I was capable of traveling through time. However, the Saurians had prepared for this possibility too. They had flood the time stream, especially around those key events in their history, with temporal mines. It hit one of these mines and got dumped into the past for a second time. So I spent a couple of more million years hiding out from the Saurians and avoiding my other self. Those how I’m so much older than everyone else.”

“With us safe for the moment,” Edgar continues, “I was finally able to heal all the damage that was done to me. Changing into a more practical form for space travel, I adopted the shape of a sphere. We left Earth to try and find a safe place for my passengers to live. Rose grew up during this time.”

“The Saurians tracked and attacked mercilessly. As time passed everyone apart from Miss Rose and Miss Goldstar were killed. We’re all that’s left now.”

“We knew from Edgar’s scans from when you disappeared, that you would be reappearing in the future”, Goldstar states. “As his technological skills grew, we narrowed it down to within a few months. So we hide in the nearby area and awaited your arrival. The Saurians did the same as they wanted to wrap up any loose ends that could threaten their stranglehold on the universe.”

“We have a plan to put things right again, but we need your help. Are you with us?”

Tilt-A-Whirl:

Regaining consciousness, Tilt looks around quickly. Spotting Flux also coming around, she rushes over and gives her leader a big hug! "imsogladyourealrightiwasworriedaboutyouthankyouforsavingmethatwasreallysweet!" she will say excitedly.

“Master Flux, good to see you again, as well as you Miss Lily and Miss Tilt-A-Whirl. It is a pleasure to have you on board once more.”

"hiyamisterEdgar!" Tilt says, waving her hand at him so fast others might think it would fall off!

Most of the explaination of what is going on is lost to Tilt. She pipes up when she hears her name mentioned, paying attention for a few seconds before she becomes bored once more. She keeps looking at Rose and how she and Menagerie seem to be close, but doesn't remember seeing the grown-up Rose before, so Tilt remains puzzled.

Finally the talking stops and it seems like someone has a plan. Tilt looks over expectantly at Flux, ready and eager to do whatever he needs her to. Anything is better than all this talking!
"wanna race?" ;)

Eldrich Arcane

When the eldritch bolt fails to affect the craft Eldrich is not greatly surprised-most inanimate objects are inherently resistant to change through simple, quick magic. The emergence of occupents is welcome as sentients were far more succeptable to magical effects.

"Behold, my spell has had the intended results after all! The way opens before us! We need only remove these minor annoyances first."

Eldrich activates the Ward of Shielding for the third time this day and throws his Arcane bolt at the armored figure aiming ( casting? ) at him.

Flux is getting better at deciphering the high speed speech of Tilt!

"You're welcome Tilt. I was worried about you too."

The summation of events and losses for the last few billion years has an oddly calming effect: for Flux it's always better to know what is going on than not, no matter how bad it looks.

"Your plan must include either a method of time travel into the past that does not set off these 'mines ' or a method of comunicating with Frostbite and Blackout since they are still at the point of historical change. That's the only place/time that can be leveraged back to normal. Either way I'm ready. What's the plan?"

It's odd to hear Goldstar so articulate even though she looks just the same. Yet the maturity is there to see in her stance and posture. Flux knows experience when it talks and he's listening to it now.

“Yes, you’re correct. There is a way to safely get into the past, but we need Lily’s powers to pull it off. The Saurians travel freely through time and are not affected by their temporal mines. For the most part they use time ships, but can also teleport other beings through time itself. They have such time travel stations scattered throughout the cosmos. Unfortunately, we’ve never been able to capture one and use it before they destroyed it.”

“Saurian technology only responds to Saurian DNA and no Saurian is going to help us in this. But Lily should be able to mimic a Saurian well enough to fool their detectors. Likewise, the mines do not bother anyone possessing Saurian DNA. Mimicking the DNA of another is something beyond Rose’s or mine abilities.”

“The first step in our plan is to capture one of these facilities. We’ll locate the rest of our teammates and bring them to the present and explain the situation to them. There are several points in history that if events played out differently the Saurians would have never risen to power. However, these points are well guarded by the Saurians. But there is one event that is not as well protected. This event is our target.”

“The creation of the White Event caused all of this. It gave us our powers, killed thousands, and allowed the Saurians to come into being. Our best course of action is to prevent it from ever happening. If there is no White Event, there is no mass influx of supers, no thousands of deaths, and no dinosaurs ever became intelligent.”

“It was the mixture of three forms of energy that triggered the White Event, however only two of these events are known to us. The saucer where Serena and myself came from and the demon sacrifice inside Horton’s Plaza.”

“What we propose is to teleport you and the other members of the Vigilant back into your past bodies, say a day or two before the White Event occurs. You’ll be less noticed by the Saurians this way. You’ll have to work together to prevent these events from coming to pass. Stop either one, or both, and the convergence will have been prevented. History will be restored to the way it should have been and none of this will have ever happened.”

“Any questions?”

I Don't Think We're in Kansas Anymore

Rose wrote:“I missed you so much…”, Rose says between her own tears.
It would be impossible to put into words what those few words from her daughter mean to her.

Goldstar begins to answer their questions, informing them that she is actually nearly three billion years old! She gives more information on her powers and says that they've been fighting these Saurians all this time. She claims that they and Rose are the last humans on Earth. This is almost more than Lily can process. So what does that make Goldy...?
Goldstar wrote:“Turning to face Flux, Lily, and Tilt, Goldstar will say, “The gist of the situation is this. You’re in an alternative timeline. The past was altered and the extinction of the dinosaurs never occurred. They grew into the dominant species on earth and humankind never existed. The enemy fleet I just destroyed was theirs. In a sense, we’re at war. They’ll do anything they can to stop us.”

Now that you’re here, we can work to put things right and undo what has been done. Are you with me?”
"Uhh... well..." Lily stammers. "I guess so. What do you think, Flux?" she asks, turning to their elected leader.

Edgar and Rose pipe in, confirming what Goldstar has said and adding their own thoughts and histories to the tale. He offers food, but Lily finds that she really has no appetite at the moment. All she can do is look at her daughter and try to comprehend what has happened. At least Flux and Tilt-A-Whirl are okay.
Rose wrote:“Actually, I’m not two billion years old,” Rose says to Lily.
"F-F-Four hundred million?!" It's all Lily can do to avoid fainting. Her daughter is now millions of times older than she has any hope of ever becoming. It's all just so... wrong; there's no other way to put it.

Once in the medical facilities, Edgar provides a much more detailed review of exactly what has happened to their world. It's an incredible and nigh-unbelievable story, yet Lily can come up with no better. The story is rife with time-travel, something Edgar claims that the Saurians have mastered. Lily shakes her head, wondering if this is all an hallucination.
Goldstar wrote:“We have a plan to put things right again, but we need your help. Are you with us?”
"I-I would like to help, but I cannot imagine what we could do. Your powers now far outstrip our own."

Flux asks about their plan, and Goldy fills them in. Indeed, it appears that her own abilities are the key to the plan, as they need her to mimic a Saurian to give them access to the reptilian technology. Ultimately, their job will be to prevent the White Event, which gave them their powers, from happening.
Goldstar wrote:“Any questions?”
"Uhm, yeah. If we succeed, won't that mean that we will have never gained our powers, and thus this all will have never happened?" Lily's head is beginning to hurt from trying to figure this out. "We'll be able to go back to our old lives and never know this even happened?" In truth, Lily's not entirely sure how she feels about that.

Backlash

Sudden movement gets Backlash’s attention. A portion of the deck slides back like elevator doors and a trio of armored humanoids rises up to the deck on a lift. The aliens’ armor is black with gold trim. Opaque helmets conceal their identities.

Spotting Backlash, one of the three raises his right arm and points it at the hero. What appears to be a weapon is seen on the back of the armored man’s wrist!

“And we didn’t even have to knock.” he says to himself more then anyone. “Heads up guys! We have company!” he shouts out a warning to the others as one raises his arm in what he can only surmise as some kind of attack.

‘Let’s see how well this ship holds a little more weight.’ as he concentrates on his density increase, Having faith in his regeneration he rushes the one attempting to fire on him dodging anything that he throws at him.(hopefully)
Take your best shot!

Flux

"Explain that part about teleporting us to our 'past bodies' again. Are you talking a mental teleportation? Isn't that more like sending our personalities to inhabit our own selves in what is now the past?"

And do you Goldstar realize that you'd be erasing your own existence? Hm, I think you do.

"I see a few problems here. Having prior knowledge of what's going to happen is good but several of the Vigilent got their abilities from the White event-they won't have any powers before then."

"And Edgars' arrival on Earth was caused by that same event. Without it he remains captive to the Warlord and his cronies on his way to helping them with conquests."

Flux looks around the room at everyone present, mulling the next question carefully.

"And here's another thought I just had fall on me: are we about to supply the chronological energy that was the third source of chaos during the Event? 'Cause I don't think anyone knows where that came from, do they?"

Listening to Flux's questions, Lily finds them very insightful. Clearly their leader is better at this scientific stuff than she is. Hopefully the answers will give them a better idea of how likely this strategy is to work.

In truth, Lily's not entirely sure how she feels about that.
“That is one possible outcome to all of this,” Goldstar agrees. “However, an equally possible outcome is that you’ll retain your powers and remember all of this, even though it never really happened. It’s a paradox that any of us is still here since if humanity never came to be, how can we be here since we are human or were created by humans.”
Flux wrote:"Explain that part about teleporting us to our 'past bodies' again. Are you talking a mental teleportation? Isn't that more like sending our personalities to inhabit our own selves in what is now the past?"
“No, this is a physical merging. The Saurians are fond of teleporting beings out of the past to use in their hunts. They enjoy hunting down prey and terrorizing them. They also teleport themselves back into the past and into other bodies for scouting purposes. When they discover a new race, they do this to learn about them and how to destroy them.”
Flux wrote:"I see a few problems here. Having prior knowledge of what's going to happen is good but several of the Vigilant got their abilities from the White event-they won't have any powers before then."
“Edgar has run the simulations. What the Saurians do is extremely painful to the being they merge with, but in your case it is yourself, so it should be less traumatic. We can't just have you appear back then as a separate entity, but then you’d be quickly detected by the Saurians. If you’re in your own body that belongs there, then you won’t be noticed. And you’ll have the advantage of having your powers to stop this. By merging with your past selves, you’ll retain your powers.”
Flux wrote:"And Edgars' arrival on Earth was caused by that same event. Without it he remains captive to the Warlord and his cronies on his way to helping them with conquests."
“Rose and I cannot go with you on your trip to the past. Rose would just assume that she grew up a normal child and I don’t even exist at this point. After we send you off, Rose will go further into the past to act as a secondary line of defense. If it comes to this point, she’ll stop the asteroid from being destroyed. Should your efforts fail.”

“I’ll be sent to a different place in space/time and prevent Edgar from coming under the thrall of the Warlord. It’s a low priority area for the Saurians, so I should be able to easily succeed.”

The chase is on...

Blackout:
Looking back you can see uniformed Saurians arriving the scene. They exchange words in their native tongue and the scientists point off in the direction of the jungle. Most of the Saurians in uniform turn and start heading in your direction. They split up into two groups of three. One group heads towards the jungle on your right, the other your left. They appear to be carrying weapons in their hands.

“We defenitly aren’t in Kansas anymore….. Dinosaurs? Its not possible!!! We just help save the dinosaurs from extinction!” he guesses as the big meteor was blown up.

“Let’s head into the forest and draw them off. If they catch up we fight. Maybe we can give em the run around and they’ll give up.”
"I doubt they will be able to catch up," Blackout says, "but they do know the land better than us."

With that, Blackout starts to move into the jungle. He will attempt to make his path as hard to follow while still trying for speed. There is no way of knowing how good of trackers these dinosaurs are.

Tesla lets out a light laugh at Eldrich's statement even with the appearance of the three armored aliens. She didn't see anything actually happen to the ship, but maybe his spell acted like a big door knocker.

The other two aliens look for their own targets. One locks in on Eldrich, while the other spots Tesla.

"Good, company," Tesla replies. "I was beginning to feel ignored out here." Seeing one turn to face her, Tesla activates her force field. She will then take aim and unleash an electrical blast at her adversary.

Roll Call: Blackout and Frostbite in the past

Being pursued by uniformed Saurians, Frostbite and Blackout decide to move deeper into the jungle. Blackout leads the way, trusting his enhanced senses to give him a safe path. Frostbite follows on an ice slide.

The jungle is thick and lush and finding a path to follow is problematic at times. It's also full of sounds and movements. Some of the noises sound like birds, but others are completely alien. Blackout detects creatures, both large and small, all around them. Things slithered past them on the ground that neither hero really wanted to identify.

All signs of pursuit faded as the pair moved deeper into the pre-historic jungle. They came upon a large clearing. The dominant feature was a large watering hole. Much to their astonishment a herd of brontosaurus is there drinking.

A ten-foot long lizard with a great finned back ambled towards the heroes. Its serpent-like head weaved before it; a snake-like tongue sampled the air. Eyeing the time displaced pair, the dimetrodon moved towards them!

Roll Call: Backlash, Eldrich, Tesla, and Stormchild in the Present.

On top of the large Saurian craft, the Vigilant in the present have drawn a trio of armored beings out of the ship. Decked out in black armor with gold trim, the trio appears to aim weapons at the heroes.

Tesla acts faster and blasts one of the armored beings with an electrical blast. The impact hurtles the alien backwards and into one his buddies, the one aiming at Backlash. Both of the armored aliens go skittering across the deck of the ship for nearly twenty feet. There was a flash of some unseen defensive shield around the alien, but Tesla's attacked blasted right through it.

Eldrich throws an arcane bolt at the standing alien. The bolt complete ignores the aliens armor and shield and directly attacks his mind. The Saurian trooper falls to his knees and fires his wrist weapon. A ruby colored energy beam leaps out, but is wide of Eldrich.

Backlash concentrates and increases his density as the watches the combat unfold around him. One of the prone aliens tries to fire at him, but is high.

Roll Call: Flux, Menagerie, Tilt-A-Whirl, Goldstar, and Rose in the future.

In the distant future, Flux, Tilt, and Lily have been reunited with Edgar, Goldstar, and a grown up Rose. Edgar works on repairing the radiation damage done to Flux and Tilt when they first appeared on Earth.

"There, sir, that should take care of it. No trace of the radiation damage remains. I've also taken the liberty of repairing your knee damage and fixing your sight problem."

Turning to Tilt, Edgar continues, "And you're healed as well, Miss Tilt. I've adjusted your metabolism a tiny bit. You'll find it a bit easier to slow down you're thought processes and speech patterns than you used to."
"hiyamisterEdgar!" Tilt says, waving her hand at him so fast others might think it would fall off!
"Good to see you again, Miss Tilt. Feel free to explore my interior. You'll find it much, much larger now that it was back on Earth."

Goldstar lays out her plan to make things right and quantifies a few points for Flux and Lily.
Lily tries to follow along, but it all is just too esoteric and her brain is starting to hurt again. "I can only hope you both are right. Without our powers, there is likely little that we could do." She thinks for a moment. "The real question is how to stop this. You mentioned the spacecraft and the demon sacrifice, both of which might be fairly hard to do anything about. What about the nuclear plant? Was that also part of the White Event, or just of the slightly later events? This is all so confusing. If we got them to shut down the nuclear reactor and keep it shut down for a few days, would that help?"
"That would certainly help," Goldstar agrees. "My whole point by stopping the White Event is that it will safe thousands of lives and prevent many others from being negatively mutated. Major Star won't explode, for instance. The Steel Squadron won't be mutated or killed. It also means that you'll have a second chance to prevent some major disasters that followed, such as the runaway reactor and the giant Minuteman that erupted out of that building. For a few days you'll have the advantage of knowing what is going to happen and can work to prevent it."
Lily looks at her daughter. She's not sure if she can bear to be separated from her daughter again so quickly. "Please, sweetheart, be careful. I couldn't bear it if anything happened to you. I want you to know that I am so proud to see the strong and wonderful woman you have become."
Rose hugs her mother again. "If all goes according to plan, you'll have me back as you remember me. These powers I have a wonderful, but also something of a curse. You have no idea what it is like to see other dying around you and knowing that you will continue to exist. The only thing that kept me going on what knowing that someday you'd be back. I just want to have a normal childhood now. This will allow that to happen."
Lily wrote:"Any way to determine what that other energy source was - either now or after we get there? Perhaps we can do something to remove it from the equation."
"Unfortunately, that's something that we've never been about to complete figure out. Our best guess that it has something to do with that peculiar man who appeared out of nowhere and then later caused the energy bubble to fade away."

"Anyway, if you're already to begin, we can go over just how we'll capture one of these Saurian Time Stations."

Now what?

I Don't Think We're in Kansas Anymore

Menagerie:

Lily watches as Edgar finishes healing Flux and Tilt. He even manages to improve their physiologies somewhat. Amazing!
Goldstar wrote:"That would certainly help," Goldstar agrees.
Lily is still way out of her depth, but follows the explanation as best she can. "We'll certainly do the best we can with that knowledge, though I suppose it all depends on our success with the primary mission."
Rose wrote:Rose hugs her mother again.
"If it means getting to be your mother again and watch you grow up, then I cannot think of anything I would rather do."
Edgar wrote:"Unfortunately, that's something that we've never been about to complete figure out. Our best guess that it has something to do with that peculiar man who appeared out of nowhere and then later caused the energy bubble to fade away."
"I'm not sure if I encountered the man you're referring to. Can you provide an image to help us identify him if we get the opportunity?"
Edgar wrote:"Anyway, if you're already to begin, we can go over just how we'll capture one of these Saurian Time Stations."
Lily takes a deep breath. "Well, I think I'm as ready as I'm ever going to be."

Plans of Future's Past

Flux

"Prior knowledge of future events will help ,Goldstar. I have some concerns about this chronological energy but it looks like there's nothing we can do about it from here. It may be some one else's doing-and there was someone on hand to deal with it the 'first' time. Also, we can warn current and active super-teams in the area about what we know including the Steel Squadron."

"Lay it out Gold. I'm ready."

On The Methods of Taking an Airship by Force

Eldrich Arcane

The success of the first Arcane bolt is evident: the figure has fallen and failed to strike it's intended target. Eldrich simply recasts the spell again to finish the job.

Running through the jungle Frosty tries to keep his eyes on Blackout but it proves to be difficult through the lush undergrowth. Several times he swears he see something moving near them but then its gone thankfully they reach a clearing within a few minutes.

As he slides in he sees a vast watering hole, his eyes go wide as he sees a herd of brontosaurus
feeding…..”They are never going to believe this…. I wish I had my camera!!!” he says as another creature close by catches his attention. “Wow!!! Looks like its feeding time again!”

Seeing the dinosaur move forward in the apparent though of ooo easy meal, Frosty mutters. “This frostbite bites back.“ as he gestures as the dimetrodon, in doing so he concentrates on entangling the beasts jaws closer. If it becomes apparent that the entangle wont hold He will hit it with an ice ram.

(Just a random thought, Now this would be a rather fun time to have Animal Control/ empathy… )

not an easy meal

Post by Blackout »

Blackout:
The jungle is thick and lush and finding a path to follow is problematic at times. It's also full of sounds and movements. Some of the noises sound like birds, but others are completely alien. Blackout detects creatures, both large and small, all around them. Things slithered past them on the ground that neither hero really wanted to identify.
Blackout focuses on getting both of them through safely, although that seems a bit dangerous or difficult at times. He keeps moving, blocking out all but the immediate distractions as best he can. Finally he thinks they are far enough away to have lost their pursuers.

Blackout gets ready to go full defensive should Frostbite's attack not work. Hopefully the dinosaur will move on to find easier prey. If it persists though, Blackout will hurl his rod at the dimetrodon to try to pursuade it further.

Tesla:

Tesla acts faster and blasts one of the armored beings with an electrical blast. The impact hurtles the alien backwards and into one his buddies, the one aiming at Backlash. Both of the armored aliens go skittering across the deck of the ship for nearly twenty feet. There was a flash of some unseen defensive shield around the alien, but Tesla's attacked blasted right through it.

"Pretty poor shields they have for all this technology," Tesla says mostly to herself as she watches her electric attack slam one of the aliens back an impressive distance.

Seeing Eldrich's attack have similar results and him seemingly preparing to attack again, Tesla does so as well. She will support Backlash's advance and fire into the one she already hit once.

Tilt-A-Whirl:

Turning to Tilt, Edgar continues, "And you're healed as well, Miss Tilt. I've adjusted your metabolism a tiny bit. You'll find it a bit easier to slow down you're thought processes and speech patterns than you used to."

"oh...." Tilt says, letting the word trail off. "as long as you didn't slow me down too much mister Edgar," she says, surprisingly a little slower and without as much effort. She leans in close to Edgar and says in a whisper, "i don't want her beating me in a race." Pointing to Menagerie, Edgar can see the big grin on Tilt's face.

"Good to see you again, Miss Tilt. Feel free to explore my interior. You'll find it much, much larger now that it was back on Earth."

"ohboyohboyohboy!!" Tilt exclaims and she quickly rushes off to see all the new wonders Edgar put in since the last time she had seen him. Because of this, Tilt will miss out on some of the plans involved for going back in time, although surely she will be back way before they are finished. Hopefully Flux can manage to be without her at his side for that long!

ooc: Edgar can slow her down a bit, but watch out when Tilt is excited! :D
"wanna race?" ;)
