New Frontiers #68

Yusef has discovered that the bolts held by the statues of Heironeous both point to a single point high on the wall behind the altar. There a small hole is located in the wall. Using a crate to stand on, Yusef determines that the hole goes straight back into the wall and is longer than his weapon.

No light can be seen through the hole, but that is no hindrance to Yusef as he can see infravisionally. By placing his hands around his eyes to block out the light in this chamber, he can see through the hole and notes that it appears to come out in a chamber at least ten feet beyond this wall. The far wall of this concealed chamber can be seen, but no details can be made out.

While this is going on, Chareos examines the statues to see if bolts the statues are holding can be moved or even removed. The bolts cannot be moved. The statues appear to be one solid piece of metal.

Before the examination can go any further, the group is called upon to move out into the Ballista Range. Out there another ghostly replay has just finished as the former defenders of Fort Fletcher endlessly play out their deaths.

Sir Acerion intently watches the protracted battle and most will agree that the invaders were man-sized and attacked with weapons that were typical to those used by orcs. The thin-thrusting weapons noted earlier are most likely swords and polearms, weapons commonly used by orcs.

While the scouts prepare to go down, the anchor group holds the Ballista Range and closes the doors that can be closed. The bodies that the invaders tossed from the battlements are gently pulled up. Four unfortunate souls are rescued, but there were nearly two-dozen ropes tossed. All four are little more than bones and ragged clothing.

The doors that remained on their hinges have to be forced back into place. The constant exposure to moisture as caused them to swell and shrink with the passing of the years. They no longer line up properly, but brute force can force them closed.

The doors that were knocked off their hinges can be placed upright once more and wedged into the opening. That just leaves one opening where fire destroyed the doors. The cold wind does diminish noticeably after the doors have been closed.

The scouts begin to descend to the middle level of the fort. Sir Acerion and Ivy lead the way down one set of stairs while Sir Corley and Olivia take the other. As you begin to go down the dark stairs (a light source will be required for those who do not have infravision) a smell reaches your nostrils that gets stronger the further you go along. The odor is unmistakable. There was a fire down below in the past.

The dark stains of soot begin to form on the walls and steps. Now frozen, it crunches underneath your feet.

The two groups reach the bottom of the stairs at nearly the same time, their torches lighting the way. Double doors that used to stand near the bottom of the stairs were reduced to ash in the fire. The entry to the oil-boiling chamber is wide open. Anything that was in the combat practicing area was destroyed in the fire. (Area #305)

The scouts begin to move off, exploring the rest of this level. The exploration goes quickly as no beings or undead or anything radiating evil are discovered. By comparing notes, a clear picture of what happened here comes into view.

Having secured the areas above, the invaders came down here. The great oil boilers, essentially huge pots that could be tilted with a block and tackle system, were smashed open and oil flooded the area. The barrels holding oil were also smashed open and the dark fluid covered much of the western portion of this level. It was then ignited.

The flames consumed many of the wooden doors. More fuel was added to the fire when it reached the area where coal was dropped into the fortress. This extra fuel made the fire more intense and this side of the level took the heaviest damage. The western lift was destroyed. The fire damaged the winch system that was used to move the lift. All that remains in that are is just a large hole in the floor. The two chambers closest to the coal pile (Area #303 & 304) are complete loses. Fire destroyed all their contents.

The location of the concealed hatch where the Hammerfall dwarves would dump the coal through is easily noted. A black stain leads up the side of the wall to the concealed hatch 15' above the floor.

The eastern side of the level was sparred much of the devastation. The eastern most doors to the boiler chamber remain intact, but are covered with soot. The doors to the infirmary and the east side quarters remain intact. The contents of those chambers were spared from the flames, but the strong odor remains ingrained. The targets that were used on the archery range remain hanging on the east wall.

The winch mechanism for the eastern lift is intact, but the fire burned through the ropes that supported the lift. The lift crashed down to the lower level.

The doors to the strategy room were destroyed, but the fire didn't go much further into the chamber. Maps of the surrounding area cover the walls and a tabletop diorama depicts the fortress and grounds. Wooden soldiers and enemies were used to mark positions.

This level is easily secured.

GM Notes:

I use the alternate rule when it comes to Infravision. It simply allows the possessor to see normally in the dark up to their sight limits, typically being sixty feet.

Those who look down the lift shafts will have only a limited viewing as the lift passes through at least fifteen feet of stone before opening up to the lower level. Weak natural light can be noted coming from the middle of that level.

Maps have been updated.

The Fort is in poor shape...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

The ballista area is closed up and this helps to lessen the chill somewhat. Validar can see the tenseness that comes with bracing against the cold constantly leave a few of his comrades somewhat.

Everyone agress that the ghostly defenders are fighting man-sized creatures and likely orcs and such. This comes as no real surprise to Sir Validar as the information was that a humanoid army sacked this Fort.

Validar starts making mental notes about what they need in order to repair this place. They will be needing to repair the damages and properly defend the fort in the next several days.

The few dead bodies that were hanging outside are brought in including one wearing a blue-tinted suit of chain mail. "This must be one of the Heironeous priests," Validar says. "Sir Acerion, does anthing he have indicate his station here? Is he just one of the priests or perhaps the leader?"

Traveling down to the third level, the group is greeted first by the smell of the devastation and then by the sight. Validar is both disappointed at the sight of the damage and at the same time pleased that everything wasn't a total loss.

"We will have much to do to ready this fortification for defense and proper use, my friends. Fortunately, the rampaging humanoid horde was not more thorough in their destruction or there might not have been any way to secure what was left."

"I am very curious to see how the stone gate mechanisms have fared. We may be hard-pressed to defend this Fort properly in the 4-7day window that remains before the enemy arrives." Validar does not say this with a defeatest attitude or a sense of worry; he is just stating facts.

"Arocken, send word to the Anchor Group to join us here on this level. We are continuing down." Validar will peer down the shaft briefly, unable to see much. His eyes narrow briefly at the sight of natural light weakly filtering in on that level. The maps didn't show any obvious openings there. Perhaps it is from the gate mechanism, Validar proposes.

"The anchor Group will hold here. Spread out enough to cover each of the stairwells from above. Each of our point groups will take one of the stairwells and continue down."

"Just because we have found no enemies and our way has been unimpeded, do not let your guard down until we have secured this place completely. We are still in enemy territory and should all act that way."

Once everything is closed up, Lyonessa feels quite a bit better. She wasn't to the point of needing spells yet, but a break from the biting cold is definitely welcomed. She smiles reassuringly at Validar as she spots him looking over everyone, probably gauging their condition. he is definitely concerned despite his outward appearance Lyonessa thinks to herself.

Moving down with the aid of torchlight throws off her infravision, but Lyonessa knows the humans need to see. Plus there might be details that infravision might not reveal. There is very little to look at however, once they reach the next floor. Fire has destroyed a large area, but they still have to explore for enemies.

Everyone meets back up with nothing to report. Lyonessa is beginning to feel they won't find anything, but Validar cautions to remain alert. It seems we are moving down again shortly, so Lyonessa gets ready to do just that.

The DMG defines this version of Infravision as "They just see in the dark as clearly as they do in normal light". Based on that, I would say that reading or studying text is possible in the dark with infravision. But as noted, this only extends, for most, to a range of 60' and then they'd be in the dark as anyone else would be.

Chareos

Taking the spear in hand Chareos gives it a little yank but it remains intact. He then looks down at where the hand meets the spear. It quickly becomes apparent that the statue is of one piece!! “The spears are one with the statues.”
Quote:
Argent wrote:
"Does anyone remember if the maps showed any chambers behind this wall," Argent asks. Having not attended the planning sessions, she's not that familiar with the Fort's lay out. "Or maybe this arrangement is like a lock. We just need to figure out the right key to open it."

"Somewhat," Yusef admits. "However, I'm having some trouble orienting myself sufficiently to be certain what should be in that direction. As for your mention of the lock, that's exactly what I'm trying to figure out here with Chareos's help."

Argent wrote:
"If I had a Wraithform spell in memory, I could attempt to see where that hole leads to. Perhaps there is another chamber at the far end? That could be where the shield is secreted. Maybe there are other treasures there as well."

Yusef smiles at Argent's obvious interest in finding treasures. "Well, tomorrow would certainly be soon enough for that, and I'm sure you can arrange to have the spell available for then."

“From what I recall of the maps and description of the terrain, this fort blocks the pass to the broken lands. Some of the fort was built into the rock face anchoring it,” he adds recalling his memory. “I don’t recall anything here that was in the original plans though, or perhaps it was left out for a reason.”

“There shouldn’t be a need to wait until tomorrow, Yusef. Ever since the battle at Coruglain I have made it a habit of keeping a Wraithfrom spell within memory or my Ioun stone. My only fear would be not being able to navigate the hole and return safely, before the spell's limits were reached…,” he trails off at the thought of becoming solid in a hole a fraction of his size. He lets out a shudder at the very thought!!!
As the fighting scouts are about to move forward Chareos notices the doors to the Ballista platforms lying on the floor where several ropes are flung over the side. After the bodies are lifted to the walls Chareos lifts the doors and drops it into place, he then moves down the line helping close the doors once again.

After a time word is sent for us to descend the stairs to the next level. Taking up his staff he heads down the stairs where the smell of ash and residue assault him. He hears Validar’s reminder of being vigilant even if we encounter little. Chareos makes no sound and merely goes to the eastern stairs staff in hand as the others go down to the next level.

Farian

Farian grabs a hold of rope, heaving it up as he carefully as he can. After several minutes he comes face to face with its occupant. “No one deserves to die like this,” he mutters as he places the roped body inside the safety of the walls.

With the job of securing the bodies done, Farian helps with the doors hitting them with the force with his shoulder. For a time the scouts are gone but word comes to head downstairs. With Warhammer and shield in hand he does so. The hollowed burnt sight of the fort catches his eyes and the smell invades his lungs causing him to cough slightly. It quickly becomes noticeable that the oil containers were tipped then lit.

He takes up his place on the western stairs awaiting the orders to head downstairs, though he does take the time to see if the soot reaches the stairs or the stone shows any sign of the fire moving down the stairs.

Grondar:

As they prepare to descend to the next level, Grondar watches as the anchor group starts bringing up the suspended bodies. He would gladly help, but they will be departing any second and he must not lag behind.

Moments later, they do indeed begin their descent to the next level. Before they even come out of the stairwell, Grondar can smell the soot and smoke residue. Thus, the sight of the destruction is less shocking than it might otherwise be.

From the evidence, it appears that the oil boilers were used against the fort itself, rather than against the attackers. Most of the floor has been gutted, though some of the rooms on their end are partially intact. If they are to find anything of use, it will likely be in those rooms. From what he recalls of the map, Grondar believes they were the infirmary and some guard quarters. Eventually, they will need to repair the lifts, though it is perhaps good that they cannot be used against them in their current condition.

Grondar agrees with Validar that there is cause for concern for the gate mechanisms. Considering the extent of the damage inflicted here, it's possible that the invaders would have damaged or destroyed the mechanisms below as well.

Validar issues more orders, including instructions for the anchor group to join them on this level. Grondar accompanies Validar to whichever stairway is chosen for their descent to the second level. Personally, he has no intention of relaxing until the entire fort is sealed and searched, and doubts any of the others will, either.

"I believe you're right. Come to think of it, I believe this wall abuts the mountain. Should be nothing but solid rock beyond it."
Chareos wrote:Taking the spear in hand Chareos gives it a little yank but it remains intact. He then looks down at where the hand meets the spear. It quickly becomes apparent that the statue is of one piece!! “The spears are one with the statues.”

"That's not surprising. I just wanted to check as many possibilities as I could think of."

Yusef peers deep into the hole. It seems to go back quite a ways. Eventually, though, it appears to open out into a room of some sort. "A room! There's a room back there!" Yusef turns back to Chareos. "Looks like you're going to get a chance to put that spell to use. There is definitely a room of some sort back there. And I'm pretty certain it wasn't on the map we saw. I'd say that we're going to have to find a way in there if we're to have any chance of locating that magic shield."

Just then, the call comes to join the others in preparation for their move down to the third level of the fort. Yusef listens to the discussion of the ghostly reenactment that occured out here, but has nothing to add as he didn't see it.

Following Sir Validar's instructions, Yusef helps in bring up the bodies that were hung out the window. Next, they endeavor to close the remaining doors, which proves to be a substantial amount of work. Still, they get the job done, and Yusef can tell that the area is somewhat warmer as a result.

Soon, the call comes up to move down again. The third level has been largely destroyed by fire, leaving behind an acrid odor that seems strangely familiar and almost... pleasant. How odd.

On the east end of the floor, a couple of rooms appear relatively undamaged. While the lead groups head down again, Yusef moves to investigate the two rooms, which had been labeled on the map as guard quarters and an infirmary.

It doesn't appear to be anything more than orcs, which doesn't surprise the paladin really. The one thing he was wondering, which he didn't see evidence of in this ghostly scene, was if there were any allies present like ogres, or smaller foes like goblins. Acerion knows orcs like to bully lesser, or dumber, races to fight for them or act as fodder. It doesn't appear that was the case, at least in this one instance.

The few dead bodies that were hanging outside are brought in including one wearing a blue-tinted suit of chain mail. "This must be one of the Heironeous priests," Validar says. "Sir Acerion, does anthing he have indicate his station here? Is he just one of the priests or perhaps the leader?"

"I will check," Acerion says, kneeling down to examine what remains of the priest. He will see if he can recognize anything, cut or trim of any robes underneath if worn, etching or design upon the armor, or if a signet ring remains perhaps.

Once everyone begins moving down, it is very evident that a fire raged through the next level as the smell reaches Acerion's nose before his eyes find the proof. Even though a large section has been destroyed by fire, there are a few rooms that are either barely touched or escaped the flames completely. Acerion checks out the area until satisfied, even taking the time to see if he senses any evil. Nothing.

Validar issues further instruction to keep moving. Acerion once again moves to a stairwell with Ivy. He hopes the others do not become complacent just because there have been no confrontations yet, but Validar speaks up and suggests that very thing, which puts the paladin more at ease.

fire damage..

Post by Sherra »

Sherra:

Sherra doesn't really catch everything that Chareos and Yusef are discussing, but there seems to be something that excites the pair somewhat. Unfortunately it seems that we're going down to the next floor in mere moments.

As she moves into position, Sherra makes a point to pass close to Yusef and ask, "Find something?"

The next level is gutted by fire, or at least that's what it seemed like initially. Several rooms are found in better shape than what Sherra expected. Certainly there was a reason, but she isn't sure what would have caused the fire to just die out.

The anchor group moves down as the advance groups prepare to go to the next lower floor. Sherra continues her vigilance, keeping her bow at the ready.

The question from Sherra brings a smile to Yusef's face. "I believe so, Sherra. There is a small hole high up on the wall that leads back into the mountain. As best I can tell, it leads to a room of some sort that wasn't marked on the maps. If one of the wizards can reach that room, I suspect it will bring us that much closer to finding this magical Shield of Justice."

Post Continued:

Before departing the 4th level of Fort Fletcher, the Guardians pull up the remaining bodies. Among them is the remains of a Priest of Heironeous still clad in his bluish chainmail.
Sir Validar & Sir Acerion wrote:The few dead bodies that were hanging outside are brought in including one wearing a blue-tinted suit of chain mail. "This must be one of the Heironeous priests," Validar says. "Sir Acerion, does anything he have indicate his station here? Is he just one of the priests or perhaps the leader?"

"I will check," Acerion says, kneeling down to examine what remains of the priest. He will see if he can recognize anything, cut or trim of any robes underneath if worn, etching or design upon the armor, or if a signet ring remains perhaps.

The ranking of a follower of Heironeous is easy to discover when you know what to look for. The key is the robe of the follower. They are typically dark blue in color and the more ornate the silver trim, the higher the rank. Sir Acerion will discover that this priest is on par with himself when it comes to placement in the church. (Approximately 7th level.)

The Guardians descend to the next level and discover that fire has damaged much of it. Oil was dumped from the great boilers and more oil was added to it. The natural pitch of the floor delivered the oil to most of the level. Those areas that escaped damage were places where pitch of floor was higher than elsewhere, so the oil just flowed away from these places.

Finding no foes here, the scouts take the stairs down to the second level of the fortress. Sir Validar and Grondar, along with Sir Acerion and Ivy take the stairs to the west side of the keep. Sir Corley and Olivia, along with Aria and Lyonessa go down the eastern side steps.

The upper parts of the western stairs show the same fire damage as the third level. Frozen soot covers the walls and steps. The soot lessens until it vanishes all together as you go down the stairs. The same smell permanents this level, but it is not as intense as above.

Reaching the bottom of their stairs, Sir Validar and Sir Acerion can see each other across area #207. There is more fire damage in this area. The lift going above crashed down here and burned. Oil from the spill fell down the shaft and splattered across the damaged lift before flowing off. Most of the doors in this immediate area were burned up in the fire.

The eastern stairs do not show the signs of the fire. They are soot free, but the smell remains. These groups come to area #221 and can see each other. The double doors to area #214 stand open.

The natural light that was noted from above is coming from area #214. This large area was where the defensive blocks were raised and lowered to seal the fortress from the outside. All eight of the blocks are up, indicating that the ground floor is wide open.

It is clear that several of the blocks have been destroyed beyond any use. Others have been damaged, but still would help impede any invaders progress. One of the blocks actually remains intact. The blocks were raised up and most turned so that they no longer fit down the holes properly. They were dropped to the ground in this position and are lying piled against each other.

A faint flicker of light attracts the explorers’ attention. It is coming from underneath the westernmost lift in area #207. The lift, appearing to still be intact, sits here. Several thick beams have been slid between the lift and the floor, preventing it from being lowered to the ground level. (The other lift to the ground floor in area #221 has received the same treatment.

As you draw closer, you realize that the flickering light is from a campfire down on the ground level of the fortress! Gruff voices reach your ears and Aria and Grondar will realize that they belong to orcs!

GM Notes:

Maps have been updated in the private section.

The blocks in area #214 are in various states. Of the four to the north, facing the Broken Lands, two are destroyed beyond use and the other two are damaged. That means that they could still be used, but they are not whole. Parts of them are messing that an enemy could squeeze through. But they would have to travel single file and would create a bottleneck. The two destroyed blocks are the ones closest to the middle of this area; the lesser damaged ones to the outside.

The blocks to the south, towards Ardelphia, are in better shape. Only one has been destroyed, while two are damaged. One somehow remains completely intact. The pattern of damage is much like the other side. The ones closest to the middle of the area are the most damaged, with the outermost one the least damaged.

Both Grondar and Aria speak orcish. What little conversation they can make it gives them the impression that the orcs, exact number unknown, are relaxing around a fire trying to keep warm. They are getting impatient that the main body of the army has yet to arrive and are generally board.

Anyone who takes look down the stairs to the ground level will see that all three of the defensive locks are in place. The stairs are effectively sealed off to you.

The two lifts to the ground appear to be intact. Whether or not the ropes will hold much weight after all this time is unknown. Both lifts were put up on beams to prevent lowering them down to the ground level. It is possible to remove these beams granting you access to the shafts.

As of this point only the areas noted in the post (207, 214, and 221) have been explored.

Now what?

Finally, some action...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

Sir Acerion indicates that the recovered body of the priest of Heironeous was of middle rank and therefore, likely the leader of the temple her, Validar surmises. Perhaps there will be time to try and contact the priest's spirit later to learn more about the situation here and the Shield.

"We will try to recover any other bodies that may still be about outside the fortress when we have the chance. And perhaps there is more that this priest can 'tell us' about what happened when we have such a chance to further explore the area."

On the second level of the fortress, they find more fire damage, but not as much. However, they also find that the lifts that go down have been blocked somewhat and the defensive blocks are in place to prevent passage between level 1 and level 2.

Further, the stone gate mechanism has been damaged. "That is unfortunate," Validar says when he examines the blocks and sees that they have been compromised. "We will have to repair or replace them as soon as possible."

With orc voices soon identified as beinfg below them and camped in level one, Validar ushers everyone back towards area 221. He then sends Grondar to have the rest of the group proceed down as well, into the eastern end of the level.

"It seems we have our first action, although it shall not be for all of us with the defensive blocks in place. No matter, if all is as expected, those that are able should be able to dispense with those scum."

Aria and Acerion confer and indicate that the orcs are part of an advance guard and are bored awaiting the main army's arrival.

"We shall have to end their boredom then, my friends."

"Unless I am missing someone, we have three people who can get easy access to the lower level. Argent can Fly and Sherra can Levitate, while Chareos has a Wraithform."

"Lord Corley, Olivia, Arocken and Farian will accompany Sherra and Argent to the top level so they have access to descend. Sherra can give Argent cover and she will be able to unleash her spells on the orcs below. Argent, try to keep your spell effects far to the west area."

"Chareos can enter the level using his Wraithform spell and determine if more spells are needed to vanquish the orcs. If the situation is somehow worse than expected, then each of you can easily get out of there as well and we can try another tactic. However, it is likely that the orcs below are not expecting any attack, especially one from surprise. We should overwhelm them easily."

"Hopefully then, Chareos and Sherra will be able to open one of the blocks and if not, then Farian and Arocken could always descend on ropes as well to assist. Does anyone have any different suggestions?"

(As an aside there is a down on the combat map stairs in the lower east side that does not match the plans map. Is this an error?)

More info arrived...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

(I have added these additional comments to my recent post based on info provided by the GM in an e-mail.)

There are large enough openings for people to pass through where the damaged stone blocks are. Also Wraithform does not convey any special movement along with it, so Chareos still needs a way down. And the steps shown on the combat map in the lower right corner do not go down, only up, since on level one there is a ramp to the underground caverns.

"We will lower ropes down two of the holes, one on each side. To the north side, we will send down single file, Grondar, then Aria." Validar looks about for a moment, then comments, "We are severely under-manned in the archer department with the elves having departed on their own quest." He soon dismisses the thought and progresses with strategy.

"Chareos, then myself, then Acerion will descend the other side. Argent can come in this side as well, to have maximum protection against retaliation. We will use your spell effects as the signal to nove in."

"The priests should cast what defensive spells they can on those that desire such and we'll hold the rest of the group here. If necessary, they can come down to give us assistance. I do not expect a large group to oppose us here, at most a vanguard, as the main enemy army is not yet here. This should give us a multi-pronged attack that will allow us to bring swords to bear as well as some archery and spells."

"Therefore, Chareos can move down first, since it is not likely he will be noticed. When Sherra has gotten into place, her and Argent can attack from opposite sides. When the attack happens, then the remaining four of us will proceed down the ropes and move to attack as well."

"We give ourselves multiple avenues of attack, defensive coverage for those departing from the main group, and a reserve in case it should prove necessary."

"Any further suggestions?"

Lyonessa:

The fire damage continues down to the next level but isn't too bad. Still there is no enemy encountered, and Lyonessa seriously believes the source of the supposed undead haunting here is the scene they saw upstairs.

Voices are heard from below as everyone explores and it is soon reconized as orcs! Validar starts laying out a plan, changing a few things and then asking for suggestions. Lyonessa listens and then speaks up.

"I have a spell that should add another into the combat faster than having to shuffle down a rope, Sir Validar," Lyonessa offers. "I can cast Spider Climb on someone, who can either move around from the outside, or move down the hole without needing to use the ropes. It could put a forth in place before we attack with spells and arrows."

"A fine suggestion, Lyonessa. I suggest we cast the Spider Climb on Grondar, since he is also very fast, it should allow him to move vertically very quickly as well. Then Arocken can take his place on the rope and Grondar and move down outside and come in with Sherra and Argent. He should be able to close any distance quickly or deal with any guards present at the actual entrance."

"Does that sit well with you Grondar?"

Chareos

After several minutes of waiting on the floor above, word is sent for the anchor group to come down. Staff in hand Chareos makes his way down the stairs, seeing the fire damage lessen as they go. It is soon learned that orcs have made camp on the floor below.

Validar-
“Chareos can enter the level using his Wraithform spell and determine if more spells are needed to vanquish the orcs. If the situation is somehow worse than expected, then each of you can easily get out of there as well and we can try another tactic. However, it is likely that the orcs below are not expecting any attack, especially one from surprise. We should overwhelm them easily."

“Lord Validar, I do not think you fully understand what the Wraithform spell grants. It more or less grants the caster some abilities of a wraith, but not all. I would not be able to fly without the use of another spell. I have none in memory. I would still need a rope in order to descend to the lower level unless there were cracks or narrow holes leading to the lower level. Also if I cast a spell I will return to human form essentially being isolated from all of you…. If there was a retreat I would not be joining you,” he says somewhat gravely.

Upon hearing some of the complications another plan is soon put forward and it appears sound to the mage though he only has one concern.

“When everyone is in position what would you like the signal to be? I could cast a sleep spell so that some could slumber. I’m sure everyone would be able to see its affects and would limit their number to counter us. Unless you would rather a more obvious signal,” he says with a slight smile.

(Seemed easier to post with both Validar's posts. Sorry if it wasn't fluid.)

Farian

Farian listens as Validar tells and the revises his plans a little.

It appears he will be repelling down the side of the fort to the ground. Sounds like fun to the dwarf!!!

Farian looks to the others as Validar asks for suggestions. Having nothing to add he waits to move out.

Sir Validar -

Chareos explains some of the nuances of the Wraithform spell and Validar makes some changes to his plan.

"I have a bit of knowledge on many of the combat spells that mages employ, but certainly not much on those that are not direct attack spells. I apologize for the error as I learn more of the specifics of these powers."

“When everyone is in position what would you like the signal to be? I could cast a sleep spell so that some could slumber. I’m sure everyone would be able to see its affects and would limit their number to counter us. Unless you would rather a more obvious signal,” he says with a slight smile.

"I would think Sleep is a bit more subtle than we are expecting here. I do not want to speak for Argent here, but I would think a Fireball or Lightning Bolt would be appropriate in this instance and would be a suitable signal as well that all could notice from even this level."

[Quick question: Do the lifts shafts provide opportunity for missile fire against and/or viewing of the orcs below?]

[Based on Mad's post, we would have to raise (if possible) or lower the lifts to be able to see. Several thick beams have been slid between the lift and the floor, preventing it from being lowered to the ground level. (The other lift to the ground floor in area #221 has received the same treatment.) I would think the beams would have to be pulled out and then the lifts lowered to allow access to the lower area. This seems like it could be potentially noisy (Silence could eliminate that though). But it could open up the area for a little archery.]

Post Continued:

The Guardians have discovered an advance group of orcs is already in the fortress! They’ve taken up residence in what had been the main warehouse on the ground floor. Most of the ways to the upper levels have been blocked off. But the holes where the gateway blocks were raised and lowered can be used to rappel down to the ground level.

By use of ropes and spells, the group begins to descend to the ground level. The main gateways lie open to the elements and snow blows about the area. It's deeper near the outside openings, but exists in patches further in. The doors to the area the orcs are in (area #101) are closed, so they remain unaware of your presence.

Arocken will call attention to animal tracks that are in the area and seem the most numerous in the area leading down to the underground caverns. The elfin ranger declares the prints to be those of Dire Wolves, a horse-sized variety of wolves which goblinoids use as mounts. Arocken would estimate that there are at least a dozen of these creatures down in the caves.

GM Notes:

The group can reach the ground floor by using ropes and/or spells. Let me know what was used to reach this area. The doors to area #101 are closed and you can reach them without incident. Decide on how you plan to go about attacking the orcs inside the old warehouse.
Gordon wrote:Quick question: Do the lifts shafts provide opportunity for missile fire against and/or viewing of the orcs below?
Validar answered the gist of this question. The blocks were 4” square timbers. Thick enough to allow light in but limits viewing. The Lift would have to removed to allow better access. That is not a problem with the strength the group possess. The shaft down, and all the lift shafts and blocks are similar in this aspect, travels through 15’ of rock before opening up into the larger area. The floors are 25 more feet down from that point. This would give a place to use for ranged attacks, but the area down below would be small given the shaft.
As another aside, Farian is not listed on our roster. Should we be suspicious?
Just haven’t gotten to it. Work has continued on the private section, but much of it is invisible infrastructure at the moment. Once complete, a single database will hold character data that would be used by multiple pages, such as the character sheets and the roster pages. For instance, once complete all I would have to do is change someone’s XP total in the database and it would be automatically changed everywhere its listed. It’ll take a lot of work to get ready to use, but once ready very easy to maintain.

Maps have been updated and corrected.

Now what?

Attacking the orcs...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

Since we were unsure that the orcs were closed up in the warehouse room and wouldn't have seen us, I would think we used spells as mentioned and ropes for the rest.

The current situation would be:
Argent - Fly
Chareos - Wraithform
Grondar - Spider Climb
Any defensive spells cast - please mention in your posts

That places Corley and Olivia at the top of the tower.
Argent and Grondar in the entrance on the Corunglain side.
Sherra and Farian in the entrance to the Broken Lands side.
Arocken & Aria came down ropes at the north end.
Chareos, Validar & Acerion came down ropes at the south end.
Ivy, Lyonessa, Po, Yusef and Rat are still on level 2.

Attacking the orcs...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

The Guardians move in as planned and they find no opposition. Apparently, the orcs are inside the warehouse area and it is closed up tight.

Validar turns to those near him and speaks quietly, "Perhaps they are trying to avoid the cold or perhaps they are just overconfident. In either case, it is easier for us, I should think."

Validar signals those across from him to enter the main area.

"Very good." Validar will move over to Argent. "Can you close off that entrance with a Web, my good lady? I would rather deal with one threat at a time, given the option." Validar will cover the entrance, with Arocken, until Argent is able to cast her spell.

Then we will move to the two entrances to the warehouse where the orcs are encamped. "Chareos, can you do a quick reconnoiter to see what we are up against and whether the orcs are concentrated or not and also if there is anything there that we would not want to destroy? I do not want another fire on our hands from an errant fireball."

We will await a moment for Chareos to enter under his Wraithfrom spell and return to us.

Grondar:

Acerion announces that the body of the priest that is hauled in through one of the windows was that of one of his peers, which saddens the dwarf. Acerion has proven himself a good soul, and Grondar is inclined to think well of his secular brethren. "I am sorry to hear of this loss to you and your priesthood, Acerion."

Grondar accompanies Sir Validar down the stairs to the second level of the fort. It too is damaged by the fire, though not as badly as the floor above. Rather than more fires having been set here, it appears this is mostly the work of those parts of the blaze that made their own way down. The western end of the level took the worst of it, and parts of that may be salvageable; the eastern ends is only lightly damaged.

They soon discover that the blocks for blocking the main passages below to control travel through the fort have been greatly damaged. This is of great concern. While a one of the blocks is in good shape, the rest will need to be replaced if this fort is to be returned to full function. Like other repairs, however, that will have to wait.

One of the Guardians notices indications of some sort of flickering light below one of the lifts. It is soon determined that it must be coming from a campfire, and there are voices coming from below as well. Listening carefully, Grondar finds that he recognises the language. "Orcs," he says, looking meaningfully at Aria. She confirms his supposition, and Grondar turns to Validar. "It's orcish, though it doesn't sound to be a very large group. Seems we have a small infestation below. Probably scouts or a war party left to keep the way open. They sound bored, and are getting tired of waiting for the main army to arrive."

At Validar's request, Grondar rushes upstairs to summon the anchor group down to the second level, then returns just as quickly.

Validar and the mages confer regarding means of accessing the lower level to deal with the orcs. There are proposals and explanation, to which Grondar listens carefully. One never knows when such information might be valuable later on.
Validar wrote:"We will lower ropes down two of the holes, one on each side. To the north side, we will send down single file, Grondar, then Aria." Validar looks about for a moment, then comments, "We are severely under-manned in the archer department with the elves having departed on their own quest." He soon dismisses the thought and progresses with strategy.
This statement strikes Grondar as strange, at first. However, thinking about it, he realizes that Sherra, Arocken and himself may be the only ones remaining with missile weapons. Not entirely lacking, but certainly limited as Validar suggested.
Validar wrote:"A fine suggestion, Lyonessa.

"Sounds like it could be fun, Validar. If you like, I could easily carry someone down with me."

It is not long before they reach the ground. Grondar immediately searches the area quickly for guards, but finds none. More than half the team is soon in position for the attack on the orcs. Arocken reports that he believes that a number of dire wolves are encamped in a cave below the fort. Validar asks Argent to block the entrance with a spell to limit the possibility of being attacked from the direction while they deal with the orcs. Once Chareos gets a look at the opposition, they should be ready for the assault.

I was thinking that one of the lifts had crashed all the way to the ground, but apparently it was one that only went down to the 2nd level. Also, I didn't realize that there was 15 feet of shaft through the stone to reach the next level, which would certainly limit what one could see by peeking through the gaps created by the beams holding up the lifts.

Yusef:

Having some idea of what it would mean to lose a member of one's fellowship, Yusef pats Acerion on the shoulder. "I am sorry, Sir Acerion."

Some little while after the point teams depart, Grondar returns and calls them down to the second floor of the fort. Fortunately, the fire damage here is not so severe. Most of the floor appears to be in decent shape, though a few doors are missing and walls are scorched. At some point, they should search the many rooms carefully, but it appears that will have to wait. The greatest problem appears to be damage to the blocks for sealing the fort from the outside. Many are destroyed and only one appears undamaged.

Light from below betrays the presence of a campfire. The dwarves quickly determine that there are orcs relaxing in the large room below. Unfortunately, the lift on that end blocks any real opportunity to get a look in order to judge numbers and disposition.

After some discussion of strategy and spell effects, Validar outlines a plan for attacking the orcs. Disappointingly, it does not include Yusef, though he remains stoic. It seems that it will be some time before he gets an opportunity to prove himself to this group. Perhaps he will have time to look in a couple rooms while they wait...

As orcs are not generally a grave threat unless in great quantities, Yusef doesn't feel the need to cast many defensive spells. However, he won't deny them to any who want them. "I have a couple of Protection from Evil spells, if anyone would like to have that extra protection," he announces to the group.

He can only watch as the assault team departs...

I take it Yusef didn't find anything of interest in the two rooms he searched on the third level?

Chareos

Yusef puts forward to bless one of those with Celestian’s blessings.

“I think I will pass my friend. Perhaps one of the others would care for Celestian’s blessings.”

Having reached the bottom floor Chareos looks about eyes focused where the light is coming from. He can make out grumbling brutish speaking, that must be orcish. Validar’s words soon reaches his ears as he looks to the noble.
Validar wrote:

“It would be my pleasure,” he says with smirk. “Though be ready if I am found out.”

Chareos will then cast his Wraithform spell and see what the orc camp has to offer as well as keeping an eye for anything that would be vital to their cause.

Having reached the base of the fort, Farian looks to the others noting the positions that his comrades have taken. With Sherra beside him he readies his crossbow and crouches down in the corridor in between the 103/secret door, main access hallway.

He smiles towards Sherra and whispers to her, “The fun soon begins.”

Sherra:
The question from Sherra brings a smile to Yusef's face. "I believe so, Sherra. There is a small hole high up on the wall that leads back into the mountain. As best I can tell, it leads to a room of some sort that wasn't marked on the maps. If one of the wizards can reach that room, I suspect it will bring us that much closer to finding this magical Shield of Justice."
Sherra smiles back warmly at Yusef as he tells her his exciting news. "That shall definitely be worth checking out," she says with some eagerness herself.

The advance groups move down again, and eventually everyone gathers at the next level down. There is evidence of further fire damage here as well. Everyone is updated as Validar puts plans into place, explaining there is a group of orcs below them.

With the news that there are orcs below us, Sherra prepares to use her Boots to lower herself into position. It turns out that the orcs' voices carried from the inside of a warehouse, so everyone is able to take much better positions.

Arocken points out that there are Dire Wolf tracks as well. Sherra isn't overly excited about having to face wolves the size of horses. It looks like they will be penned up, at least for the duration of the immediate battle, with Argent's magic.

As indicated, Sherra moves over with Farian to stand at one entrance. We have a few moments to wait while Chareos does some scouting for us. She prepares her bow while they wait.
He smiles towards Sherra and whispers to her, “The fun soon begins.”
Sherra smiles in return, replying in Dwarvish, <"So it would seem.">

I simply missed it. Both rooms are in surprisingly good shape all things considered. It appears that the orcs didn’t search these rooms, most likely assuming that they would be destroyed in the fire. There is no fire damage, but each room smells of smoke. The rooms are filthy after sitting for almost 50 years. Miscellaneous personal items can still be found in the guard chamber.

The two lifts that travel between the 2nd & 3rd level did crash and burn. Their remains are now on the 2nd level. Two other lifts connected the 1st and 2nd levels. These two are the ones up on blocks. It was noted when the burned lifts were described that they went down 15’ before opening up to the chambers below, but that description wasn’t continued when I described the second set of lifts. So my fault on that part.

Argent:

The Invoker wrinkles her nose as the unpleasant smell of the fire reaches it.

“It’ll take forever to get this stench out! My wardrobe will be ruined!”

Thankfully the stay on the fire-consumed level is brief. Soon we’re down to the next level and learn that some orcs are already here. Ways to reach the ground level of the fortress seem limited and plans for attack are being formulated.
Validar wrote:"I would think Sleep is a bit more subtle than we are expecting here. I do not want to speak for Argent here, but I would think a Fireball or Lightning Bolt would be appropriate in this instance and would be a suitable signal as well that all could notice from even this level."
“Personally, I would rather hold up on using more destructive magic until I knew what else was around the orcs. They could have prisoners or something that would only spread a fire in there or maybe even valuables. This fort seems to have seen more than enough fire damage so far. It also occurs to me that if we are faced with a small number of enemy and that numbers that we’ve faced in the past, would it not be more prudent to save our spells and just let the warriors deal with them?”
Argent wrote:"Very good." Validar will move over to Argent. "Can you close off that entrance with a Web, my good lady? I would rather deal with one threat at a time, given the option." Validar will cover the entrance, with Arocken, until Argent is able to cast her spell.
“As good as done,” the Invoker declares, casting her Web spell on the ramp opening to hedge in whatever is down there.

Argent listens as talk turns to the use of the Wraithform spell.

“Excuse me, but I have a measure of experience with that magic. In the Wraithformed state, the caster has only limited interaction with the real world. They cannot be harmed by normal weapons and you can seep through the smallest of cracks. Climbing down a rope in such a state is simply impossible. Furthermore, the spell is of short duration and should be cast right before it is needed.”

“It has been my experience that it functions best when combined with flight. Perhaps a better alternative strategy would be to cast the magic on myself instead of Chareos? I could enter their camp by way of the other lift and then float down to scout out the area. I could even draw their attention allowing the rest of the warriors to slip into the chamber unnoticed. Chareos can cast any spell that I would have and would be much better in close quarters combat should it break out. What say you?”
I am an Invoker of no small power.

Acerion:

Sir Acerion indicates that the recovered body of the priest of Heironeous was of middle rank and therefore, likely the leader of the temple her, Validar surmises. Perhaps there will be time to try and contact the priest's spirit later to learn more about the situation here and the Shield.

Having some idea of what it would mean to lose a member of one's fellowship, Yusef pats Acerion on the shoulder. "I am sorry, Sir Acerion."

Acerion believes that this priest would have likely been the leader of the temple here. After informing Validar and thinking on it for a moment himself, he is approached by a few of his friends who offer kind words, and replies simply with, "Thank you."

Moving up next to Ivy once more, we descend to the next level. More fire damage is noted, but again the area is void of enemies, corporeal or otherwise. As they continue their search, Aria and Grondar indicate that they hear voices below, and that they are orcish.

The initial plan to deal with the orcs does not include Acerion as he has no easy way to descend to the lower level, since spell options are limited and most will be having to rely on using a rope. Soon, however, it is revealed the orcs are further removed, holding up in a warehouse. Acerion descends a rope after Chareos and Validar to join most of the others.

As orcs are not generally a grave threat unless in great quantities, Yusef doesn't feel the need to cast many defensive spells. However, he won't deny them to any who want them. "I have a couple of Protection from Evil spells, if anyone would like to have that extra protection," he announces to the group.

"I will not have need for such protections," Acerion tells Yusef, "but the offer is appreciated."

Orcs are located and plans for attack are made. Ivy seems to be held and reserve and that is fine with her right now. She’ll which Sir Acerion safety before he departs.

"We won't be gone long, my Lady," Acerion reassures Ivy before he departs.

Preparing for the coming battle, Acerion readies his axe once more. He doubts this will be anything more than a quick dispatching of some lazy, witless orcs, but does not allow himself to become overconfident. Instead he will wait to see what Chareos is able to tell us upon his return.

Attacking the orcs...

Post by Validar »

Sir Validar -

"Does that sit well with you Grondar?"

"Sounds like it could be fun, Validar. If you like, I could easily carry someone down with me."

"I am more concerned with mobility and the ability to quickly retreat should the situation be more that is expected. Therefore, it would be best to not have an added burden."

"I would think Sleep is a bit more subtle than we are expecting here. I do not want to speak for Argent here, but I would think a Fireball or Lightning Bolt would be appropriate in this instance and would be a suitable signal as well that all could notice from even this level."

"Argent, you are assuming there are only regular orcs here. After our battle in Corunglain and the power we witnessed against the leaders of the orcs there, we cannot assume that this small number is only regular orcs. They could be a group entirely of orc heroes, like a version of our adventuring bands. I would prefer to not be overconfident."

"As for whether a fireball is appropriate or not, my intent was that Sleep is something of questionable effectiveness, whereas even Magic Missiles are sure to cause damage. As you know not all invocation magick is destructive. And while it may be true that there could be prisoners, there doesn't appear to be much left besides stone that will not have to be replaced anyway as far as the fortress goes. However, we do have to be careful not to harm any valuables they might have." Was that last statement the slightest bit sarcastic? If so, Validar's voice does not betray it as such.

"We do not seem to be up against much as yet, so the saving of 1 or 2 spells is not as vital as overall safety to the group and the quickest defeat of the enemy. Our fighters are powerful, but the advance group all has mobility and a chance to adapt more easily to an unexpected situation. We should not discount the unknown, simply because it seems to be of no consequence."

"Very good." Validar will move over to Argent. "Can you close off that entrance with a Web, my good lady? I would rather deal with one threat at a time, given the option." Validar will cover the entrance, with Arocken, until Argent is able to cast her spell.

“As good as done,” the Invoker declares, casting her Web spell on the ramp opening to hedge in whatever is down there.

Once the cavern entrance is effectively blocked, Validar will then concentrate on the attack against the orcs.

"Chareos is also better able to defend himself should something unexpected happen, so I do not prefer sending you into the warehouse alone. We will have Chareos do it."

"As for the spell itself, it seems of very limited use without Fly. If I understand you correctly then, passing over a grate would cause the person to fall through it since it would not hold him up. Regardless, it is not necessary for Chareos to use it to descend to the lower level, so we can wait until we are ready for him to enter the warehouse and see what's there. If the situation is as simple as we hope, then we do not need such surprise and if it is not, then better to be prepared as we are."

In order to be prepared for the unexpected, we will still have Chareos enter the warehouse in Wraithform. Most will be ready to enter the warehouse should fighting erupt or we wait until Chareos returns.

A few of the group should keep their eyes open for other threats.

Argent wrote:“It’ll take forever to get this stench out! My wardrobe will be ruined!”

"Don't fret, milady. I'm sure we can arrange to replace whatever is damaged," Grondar says to beautiful wizardess.
Yusef wrote:However, he won't deny them to any who want them. "I have a couple of Protection from Evil spells, if anyone would like to have that extra protection," he announces to the group.
"As have I," Grondar says, surprised that he forgot to mention it. However, no one seems interested - not even Sherra, whom he has so protected in the past. "But I guess they're not needed," he says, looking at Yusef with a smile and clapping him on the shoulder.
Validar wrote:"I am more concerned with mobility and the ability to quickly retreat should the situation be more that is expected. Therefore, it would be best to not have an added burden."

Grondar is surprised that Validar thinks that one little human would be any real burden to his magically-enhanced strength, but sees no point in disputing.

Validar and the mages discuss the use of spells a bit longer. Meanwhile, Grondar pulls TruthGiver from his belt and prepares it and his shield for use.

Yusef:

Not finding anything of apparent interest or worth in the barracks or infirmary, Yusef returns to the rest of the group just in time to join them in moving down to the next lower level.
Sherra wrote:Sherra smiles back warmly at Yusef as he tells her his exciting news. "That shall definitely be worth checking out," she says with some eagerness herself.
"And we certainly shall, as soon as we have the time. It seems this old fort still has it's share of secrets."

Grondar admits to having some of the same blessing which he offered to the group. However, as the dwarf says, it seems they are not needed. "Very well," he replies, "perhaps there will be more need for them later."

While the others head down to the first level to confront the orcs, Yusef decides that he might as well look around a bit. Knowing that food is always an important issue, he will have a look in the Dining Hall, Kitchen and Pantry to see what if anything there might be usable.
